From The Editor When you read these lines the time will be drawing near for you to set your watches and clocks back one hour and, if your editor's memory serves him correctly and it will be as usual, it will be Sunday morning, October 28th early at 2 a.m. so, to be safe, do that Saturday night, October 27th, and you can sleep 1 hour longer Sunday. When we think. about this, time is about the only thing the government returns to us; in April they take 1 hour away (or advance the time) and in October they give it back.

One radio announcer says that the best way to know what to do with this Daylight Saving Time situation is to keep in mind that: You Spring forward one hour the last Sunday in April and Fall back one hour the last Sunday in October. That is very true, isn't it.

TIME! What is it? Sometime ago I read a condensed article written by Erma Bombeck; It's title is "There Wasn't Time", and the article follows.

There Wasn't Time Time. It hangs heavy for the bored, eludes the busy, flies by for the young and runs out for the aged.

Time. We crave it. We curse it. We kill it. We abuse it. Is it a friend? Or an enemy?

We know very little about it. To know it at all, to know its potential, perhaps we should view it through a filter called memories.

When I was young, Mama was going to read me a story and I was going to turn the pages and pretend I could read. But she had to wax the bathroom and there wasn't time.

When I was young, Daddy was going to come to school and watch me in a play. I was the fourth Wise Man (in case one of the three got sick), but he was having his car tuned and there was no time.

When I was young, Grandma and Granddad were going to come for Christmas to see the expression on my face when I got my first bike, but Grandma didn't know who she could get to feed the dogs and Granddad didn't like the cold weather and, besides, they didn't have the time.

When I was older, Dad and I were going fishing one weekend, just the two of us, and we were going to pitch a tent and fry fish with the heads on them. But at the last minute he had to fertilize the garden and there wasn't time.

When I was older, the whole family was always going to pose together for our Christmas card. But my brother had ball practice, my sister had her hair up, Dad was watching the Colts and Mom had to mop the kitchen. There wasn't time.

Wednesday, October 24, 1979 When I grew up and left home to be married, I was going to sit down with Mom and Dad and tell them I loved them and would miss them. But Hank (he was our best man and a real clown) was honking the horn in front of the house, so there wasn't time.

Of course, all of us surely will remember the Czech Day at Lodge No. 88, Houston Sunday, October 28th.

Read the letters in the Letter Section. ** * Yours truly has known the Anton PokOrny family practically all his life; they live near Round Rock. Brother and Sister Pokorny are parents of Sister Gebala, the wife of our SL vice-president, and, therefore, his father and mother-in-law. Why do I write this?

Well, if any of our members around Taylor, Round Rock, etc. see some buttons popping off of Brother Anton's vest or coat covering his chest here is the reason: They had six children; all girls -four married daughters have nine children -- all girls (15 children and grandchildren) so there have been no sons or grandsons for Brother Anton to brag about and, all of a sudden, this 'writer has news that, at last, Monday, October 15th, Brother and Sister C.J. and Irene King (their fourth daughter) became parents of a son, Brent Anthony.

C.J. and Irene are pop's favorites now!

The entire Pokorny families are members of Lodge Praha No. 29, Taylor.

SUPREME LODGE

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE Pre-Convention Delegate Information To: All Lodges Dear Brothers and Sisters: A we get into the latter part of 1979 and start electing delegates to the XXIIIrd Convention to be held in 1980, it occurs to me that it might be well to have a brief review of the election of delegates in the local lodges. I am referring primarily to Article 4 of our by-laws.

3 Only those membeis may be elected delegates or substitutes who have attended a majority of the meetings during each of the three years preceding the election of delegates to the convention. The delegates to the last convention felt that if a member was going to be elected a delegate to a convention where decisions of great importance are going to be made that will affect the Society for four years, they should be as active as possible in their local lodges. This was to preclude, I am sure, a member not attending any or very few of his lodge meetings for two years and then making an all-out effort to attend at least one-half of them in the year before the convention. In the workshops earlier this year, for example, those attending were of the unanimous view that the present by-law is not too stringent and should not be weakened or re-worded so as to require less active participation on the local lodge level.

The first thing that may arise in some lodges (very few, I believe) is that the lodge may not have enough members qualified to be elected delegates under this requirement. Certainly, one cannot plead lack of knowledge of this requirement because the by-laws have now been in effect almost 8 years and there has been a wide distribution of our by-laws.

Let us take, for example, the case of a lodge that is entitled to five delegates, but only four members qualify as delegates under Article 4 (d) 3. In such instances, the lodge should proceed to elect only the four who are eligible, and those four will have the voting power of five delegates. To elect a delegate who is not eligible would certainly be a violation of the by-laws. In other words, those delegates present would vote with the full voting strength allotted to their lodge.

(Of course, if a lodge is entitled to one delegate who is not present in the convention, that lodge is deprived of representation and votes in the convention).

Other questions that have arisen have been as follows: a) What is meant by a majority? The answer is one more than half. For example, if a lodge holds monthly meetings, then a majority of the meetings would have to be seven. If a lodge holds quarterly meetings - four a year - then a majority would be three. b) Does attendance at the meeting in which the election of delegates takes place count toward a majority? Yes; you cannot discount or invalidate the meeting in which elbction of delegates takes place. Delegates and substitutes are elected in what has been termed for a

number of years "the annual meeting" or in the nearest succeeding meeting.

Article 95(b) stipulates that the annual meeting is to be held in November or December or the first meeting thereafter.

Also, if the lodge wishes, and with the consent of two-thirds of its members present, it may nominate (but not elect) delegates in the meeting preceding the annual meeting. c) How and when will we know how many delegates our lodge is entitled to?

Each lodge has been furnished an official count by Financial Secretary Mikulas' office. d) How many delegates does a lodge elect?

Every lodge has the right to elect delegates according to its membership and according to the following scale: From 20 to 100 members over 16 years of age, one delegate; for each additionally attained 100 members, one additional delegate. The delegates in the convention are entitled to one vote for every active and full-benefit member over 16 - in short, all those members except social members and those on Extended Term Insurance. e) What if a lodge is entitled to an additional delegate after the annual meeting and 60 days before the convention?

Brother Mikulas will inform your lodge to this effect and the answer is the same as in the case of the delegate who cannot go to the convention: the substitute with the highest number of votes becomes the additional delegate. (See Art. 4(g)3 of the by-laws). (Comment: There appears to be a conflict in the wording of Articles 4(a)3 and 4(g)3. The former states that the additional delegate is elected and the latter states that the substitute with the highest number of votes goes as the delegate. In either case, however, the person is elected.)

Article 4(a)3 could be misleading. It reads as follows: "A lodge attaining an additional 100 members between the annual meeting and 60 days before the convention may elect an additional delegate." A lodge may not necessarily need 100 members to qualify for an additional delegate. They may need 3, 15, 20, or 40 to qualify for an additional delegate. In other words, however many delegates it takes to make an additional 100 will entitle a lodge to another delegate.

1) How many substitutes does a lodge elect?

One for each delegate, not to exceed ten. Substitutes and delegates are not paired. g) What if an elected delegate cannot attend the convention?

4 If any of the elected delegates cannot go to the convention, for whatever reason, the substitute with the highest number of votes fills the first vacancy. The same procedure holds true in the event other delegates are unable to attend until all substitutes are depleted. h) How does a lodge go about electing its delegates?

Nomination and election of delegates is made by whatever procedure is termed most convenient and expedient by the local lodge. Remember that if you use a nominating committee, nominations from the floor must be permitted, and if you are going to elect more than two delegates and substitutes, a secret ballot may be used. (Art. 4(e)3. i) How does a lodge determine who is eligible insofar as attendance at meetings is concerned?

Every lodge should have a sign-in book (or some other method) whereby members record their names when they attend meetings. The other qualifications should be determined by the local lodge as set forth in Art. 4(d), 1 through 7. j) What if a lodge was only recently organized?

A lodge organized less than three years preceding the election of its delegates may elect its delegate (s) and substitute (s) from among those members having attended a majority of the lodge meetings from the date of its organization. See Art. 4(c). k) Does the delegate have to be present during the election?

Yes, unless he is absent due to unavoidable circumstances acceptable to the membership.

1) If a member transferred from one lodge to another during the last three years, is his attendance at the previous lodge valid at the new lodge?

Yes, the attendance record of the previous lodge will be accepted. m) What if a lodge loses a number of members by death or transfer after the election of delegates has been held?

Article 4(c) states that a lodge losing the required number of members between the time of the election of delegates and convention will not lose delegate (s) due to such change. Comment: This provision might have to be amended so that the same members are not counted twice in two different lodges in determining the delegate strength from those lodges. For example, as it is now, if an election of delegates is held in December, the number of members in that lodge at that time is used to determine the number of delegates from that lodge. If, subsequent to the election, X number of members transfer to

another lodge they will of course be counted again to determine the delegate strength in the new lodge. I will submit a proposal to the By-law Committee that would preclude this from happening, although the instances might be quite rare. n) How does a delegate know how many votes he will cast in the convention?

This number will be related verbally to the delegates by the president of the Supreme Lodge shortly after the convention is officially convened.

Delegates divide the votes equally among themselves and the odd vote or votes are cast by the delegate receiving the largest number of votes in the annual meeting.

o) When a substitute delegate advances to the position of delegate how is his vacancy as a substitute filled?

If one of the substitute delegates advances to the position of delegate, the lodge may hold an election to replace him as substitute, but probably does not have to because each lodge elects not more than 10 substitutes and it is unlikely that all 10 would be exhausted.

The substitute becoming a delegate relinquishes his substitute position; if he chooses not to become a delegate, he forfeits both positions. He can't have it both ways. Should it become necessary to . elect additional substitutes between now and 60 days before the convention, a lodge could elect them during this period.

SL Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska has sent the lodges forms and delegates' credentials to be signed by the president and secretary of the local lodges, who must certify the election of the delegates and their substitutes. (Read Article 5 of our by-laws).

In summary, it behooves all members to read and become well acquainted with Article 4 through about 25 on questions relating to delegates and our conventions in general. In the meantime, if any lodge or individual member has any questions that have not been touched on in this report, they might forward them to me, and if they are of general interest to the membership, I will try to provide an answer in the Vestnik. If I do not know the answer I will consult with others.

A NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS IN DISTRICT II Dear Brothers and Sisters: Due to the resignation of the District II By-law Committee member and the death of his substitute, we now have a vacancy on the By-law Committee.

According to Art. 14(b) of the By-laws, the procedure for the election is to be determined by the district officers. I and my fellow district officers have met and decided that we should first appeal to any member in District II to see if there is someone who would like to serve on this committee so that their name can appear on the ballot that we will mail out. If there is anyone in the district who wishes to serve on this committee, they should forward their name and lodge number to me at their earliest convenience. Their name should reach me no later than November 10, 1979.

Please send it to the address below. This notice for nominations will have appeared in three issues of the Vestnik by that time. We will then mail out the ballots with the names of the nominees to all the delegates to the last convention, and ask that they be returned as expeditiously as possible because, according to the By-laws, this committee has to meet no later than eight months before the convention, which means they will be meeting sometime during the month of November. The chairman of that committee will set the date for that first meeting.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON District V meeting was held Sunday, October 14 in the Vrazel's Hall in Danbury, Texas. The attendance was not overwhelming, but the meeting was interesting. District V president, Brother Orville Crossman conducted the meeting well. Secretary Sister Pearl Hanka read the very detailed minutes of the last district meeting.

It was a pleasure to have, with us, us, Financial Secretary Brother Jerry Mikulas and his beautiful wife and two children. At this meeting Brother Jerry Mikulas presented Brother Lostak, age 96, his endowment policy. Pictures were taken and I am sure these will be in our Vestnik.

It is sad to spend so much money for an orchestra to play after the meeting, for the social, when there are so few present; most of the attending members departed for home after a brief good-bye. The dinner was good and especially the homebaked pastries furnished by the ladies of Lodge No, 139. All in all, it was a nice-spent Sunday.

In our monthly lodge meeting, Sister Barbara Kunetka and Brother A.J. Stayton were reported on the sick list in the Heights Hospital. I hope, by now,

6 both are out of the hospital and well.

An avalanche of wedding anniversaries was announced: Edward and Willie Mae Stang, 42 years; John and Lola Bueckner, 33; Ed and Evelyn Zientek, 9; Ronald and Cindy, 8; Alvin and Janet Raymond, I; and Johnnie and Mary Kosut, 33. For the social Johnnie and Mary donated the refreshments, they were married in 1946. Many birthdays, as usual, were announced. To all these celebrants, we wish happy days ahead and many more.

Faithful Sister Albina Hilsher was our guest at the meeting; we are always glad to see you.

October 8th, which fell on our meeting night, was also my birthday, and I was surprised and overwhelmed with the presentation of "This Is My Life" by Sister Wanda Kennedy. The membership completely surprised me, I had not a spark of knowledge what was planned for my 80th birthday. I wish to thank each and everyone for this lovely moment where many of us shed tears rolling down our cheeks. I felt humbled with the thought that my time devoted to my second home: Lodge No. 88 was not in vain. Thank you and I will treasure that moment as long as I live. Thanks again, I love all of you!

Please, Willie and Edna Wehring, forgive me for omitting your names of the participating Choral Club members in Schulenburg, Texas. Willie was in charge of our sound system; he brought it there and set it up with the help of others and then operated it, packed it and brought it back home to Houston, which is quite a chore. Thanks, Willie!

This coming Sunday, October 28th all day something will take place to entertain you. At 11:30 a.m., our famous turkey dinner with all the trimmings will be served, in the afternoon the Czech Concert orchestra, the Victoria Singers, Lodge 88 Choral Group, Polish Dancers, Ray Baca with his dulcimer, Beseda Dancers, the Parade of Costumes and a dance with the Vrazels, will follow. Make it a day and come out to enjoy the festivities.

Dear Members and Friends: The month has rolled by and it is time for the Halloween social on October 26th, at 7 p.m. We will have Halloween goodies of doughnuts and popcorn.

Last month we had a nice turnout and everyone enjoyed the games and food.

The cotton crop is in full harvest, but everybody should be caught up with most work by then. The gins are running day and night. I hope they do not have a breakdown.

Let us remember October 26 at the SPJST Hall in Rowena.

Oh yes, last month I mentioned we would have a new light system; we have them in, and sure did enjoy the light when we played dominoes.

Dear Members: The St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Needville will have its annual turkey dinner on October 28th at the American Legion Hall on Highway 36 South of Needville, beginning at 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Tickets will be $3.25 for adults and $2.25 for children under 12 years of age. LODGE NO. 179, WARRENTON

Dear Members and Friends: Lodge No. 179 held its regular meeting Thursday, October 10th, including a Halloween costume party.

President Harold Bergmann called the meeting to order and led the fine group in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Roll call of offices revealed all present.

Secretary Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting and all the correspondence. Including in the mail was an invitation to Lodge No. 54, West's 75th anniversary celebration and also a number of prize ticket books for our members to help sell. Anyone wishing to have some prize tickets, see President Bergmann or Lee Leonhardt at Warrenton Store. Brother Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Both reports were accepted as given.

Dorothy Oltmann read the financial standing and also the names of two new youth members; namely, Juanita and Rachel Harper. We warmly welcomed them into our midst.

In old business there was a discussion concerning the music for our annual celebration. No conclusion was reached, then the president appointed Doris Eckermann, Randy Wied and Ronald Klump on the Band Committee.

For new business a Halloween parade was held. The youth club donated potted plants for the adult members' first prizes. First place winners in their respective category were: Sisters Garda Siptak, Doris Eckermann, Jeanette Schoenst and Paula Keys.

Judges for the youth club Halloween's costumes were: Sisters Tiny Ziese, Falba Schoenberg and Elfrieda Oelkens. The youth letter will state the details.

Our Christmas social was briefly discussed. Brother Leonhardt and Sister Oltmann were appointed on the Entertainment Committee.

All members are to take notice that in our November meeting, we will have election of officers and also elect a delegate plus an alternate for the 1980 SPJST Convention in June.

The Food Committee stated that the lodge will furnish barbecued chicken for our November meeting and members are asked to bring a covered dish to help complete the menu.

With no further business the meeting was adjourned.

Afterward everyone enjoyed the tasty beef stew and cakes, pies, fudge squares and refreshments.

Our next meeting will be held Thursday night, November 8th, including election of officers, starting at 7:30 p.m. and youth club meeting will be held at 7 p.m.

LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA

Dear Members and Friends: 911 E. Shaw, Pasadena, Texas will be where the action is. SPJST Lodge No. 172 is having a Czech Fair. This is the first for Pasadena. Our lodge will be ten years old. Everyone gather up your family and friends and join us.

A Czech dinner will be served at 11:30 a.m. We will have a full day of entertainment for all ages. The City Polka Boys will close the day with a free dance from 5 to 9 p.m.

Lillia Mae Peter is asking for any type of items that you may have for the country store. We need door prizes and pastries. We will also need workers.

Lodge No. 172 is located at 911 E. Shaw, just off 225, La Porte Freeway.

Coming from La Porte, keep on the feeder, do not get back on 225, there is a sign that says Pasadena, cross Red Bluff and, just before you get to Tatar street, turn right and that will take you to Shaw Street. The lodge will be on the right. A 7-11 Store is across from our lodge on Shaw. I am hoping I do not confuse everyone with my directions because some members know I am not the best on giving directions.

The District V meeting was a very interesting day. Lodge No. 139 is to be commended for having such a nice dinner and extending such a warm welcorrte.

People say a wheel has to have spokes, but did you ever think those spokes need a rim to make the wheel run smoothly and stay together, so let us ALL be a part of that wheel.

Dear Members: I would like to remind all of you that at our November 7th meeting, we will have election of officers. This year we also will elect our delegates to the 1980 SPJST Convention. I hope to see you at this important meeting. Let me take this opportunity to remind everyone that our meetings are now held on the first Wednesday of every month, at 7:30 p.m.

At our October meeting several important matters were discussed. One of these was the possible remodeling of our lodge building. A committee was delegated to get bids and to check on this project. A report is to be given at the November meeting. We hope to see you at this meeting so that we can discuss this project thoroughly.

BIRTHDAY CLUB SISTERS OF LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by Sister Shirley High at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 10th.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Rosalee Kostom and they were approved as read.

Sister Lillie Spies gave a very complete report of the finances. Thanks

to Sister Spies for always taking care of our cash box. We appreciate that.

Our deceased Sister Frances Walla's daughter, Vlasta Moore, donated two beautiful handmade afghans to the Birthday Club. They are just a beautiful array of colors. Many thanks to Vlasta Moore and we miss our dear Sister Walla.

Many thanks to all those who helped make the bake sale a big success Sunday, October 7th at the Heights Festival. Sister Birdie Hilsher said that she would write the report in detail so thanks until then.

Everybody is so excited about Czech Day on October 28th. Sister Tillie Helmcamp is chairperson of this day and Sister Helmcamp plans such a beautiful program that everyone plans to attend and bring their friends and family. The Birthday Club Sisters will have a bazaar of many beautiful handmade afghans and Czech vests and many, other gifts. Sister Frances Olexa is donating one of her handmade vests.

All donations for the bazaar are greatly appreciated.

Hostesses for the October luncheons were Sisters Bessie Dewer, Louise Chudej. Bessie Vasula and Minnie Bravenec. The food was really good and we appreciate these sisters volunteering to cook for October since we had run out of cooks. You ladies were dear ones.

Our dear Sister Frances Olexa has really celebrated her 80th birthday. At Lodge No. 88's meeting, they had a "This is Your Life, Sister Frances Olexa." Sister Olexa is a great person and she has been the backhone of the Birthday Club and many fraternal committees. We are proud of you, Sister Frances Olexa, and we wish you only good and happiness.

I want to thank each of you who donated items to the youth club for their garage sale. They had a good turnout and raised a good bit of money to put in the floor fund. As you know, the floor in the mother lodge is bubbling and peeling off in places. The youth club is helping raise money because all of us will benefit from a new floor whether they are six or sixty. We are really looking forward to a new floor and hope each of you will keep being as nice and generous as all have been before. We sincerely appreciate all your help.

We are planning on having Cleanup Day Sunday, October 28th, at 1 p.m.

Claud Baumbach, publicity chairman, really did a great job promoting the Dale McBride dance. The Dottsy dance scheduled for Sunday, November 11th and the Ernest Tubb appearance on Saturday, December 22nd are also sure to be sell-outs because of his excellent promotional ideas.

Logan Bartz, director in charge of the Sundowner Club, reports that the hours the Sundowner is open may change after its first month's trial run. At present hours are: 4-10 Monday through Thursday; 3-11 on Friday; 6-11 on Saturday and closed on Sunday.

NO. 79, CORPUS CHRISTI

Lodge No. 79 held its monthly meeting 11 October 1979 with all officers present and a total of twenty-one members attending.

President Brother Frank C. Sacky called the meeting to order and led us in the pledge of allegiance. A moment of silence was held in honor of our departed member, Sister Agnes Jurica.

Minutes were read and approved.

Lodge 79 will sponsor a dance 10 November 1979 with music by The Bay City Dutchmen. Sister Peggy Tepera is to co-ordinate with the Kitchen Committee on what to serve.

Our next meeting will be November 8th, which is the second Thursday.

I received a letter from Mr. V. Hala from Lewistown, Montana who says he enjoys reading the Vestnik very much.

Mr. and Mrs. Hala are former residents of Corpus Christi and were very active in SPJST and Sokol while here. They send their regards to all their friends in the area.

OF DISTRICT V MEETING AT DANBURY, TEXAS OCTOBER 14, 1979

MINUTES

The meeting was held at Danbury hosted by Lodge No. 139, Sunday, October 14, 1979. President Norval Crossman convened the meeting at 11:05 a.m. with Dennis Veselka

presenting the colors and leading in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mark Wahlberg, our flag-bearer, was in Dallas with the Beseda Dancers from Lodge 88.

Brother J.M. Skrabanek extended a warm welcome to the Supreme Lodge officers, District V officers, sisters, brothers and guests. He announced that this was a very special day. A member of the SPJST, namely, Brother Rudolph Lostak had his 96th birthday this day and had been a member for 70 years.

Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr. from the Supreme Lodge presented him with a $1,000 check and remarked that out of SPJST, 82 years old, only 44 times this has happened that members have out-lived their insurance policy. The entire Lostak family, 100% SPJST members were present, and presented him with a beautiful birthday cake. All of us present, enjoyed the extra celebration that took place, and wished Brother Lostak a happy, healthy day.

"He was delighted!"

District V 1st Vice-President Alvin Sefcik, thanked Lodge No. 139, Danbury for hosting the meeting and also the fine food which was served. He also reminded us of the wonderful times we used to have once a year at the Skrabanek Lone Pine Ranch at ,Danbury. What a great day we used to have there!

From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. we had our meal and fellowship, after which Brother Norval Crossman reconvened the meeting and praised the delicious meal.

Assistant DYC Dan Berry from Pasadena took charge of the youth program because DYC Richard Wahlberg was in Dallas. He had one dance, presented by Bo Going and Kim McSpadden from Lodge 88.

District V Director Louis Hanus and 2nd Vice President Victor Peter introduced the guests, Brother Cyril Orsak, and presidents of the different lodges; namely Brothers J.M. Skrabanek, Glenn McKay, Charlie Matcek, Alvin Sefcik, Jerome Ermis, Alvin Franta, Henry Linhart, and Victor Peter.

Then the District V past president were introduced: Brother J.M. Skrabanek, Alvin Sefcik, Victor Peter, Charlie Matcek and Jerry Prochazka.

District V Secretary Pearl Hanka read the roll call of the lodges, and 10 Lodges were represented: Nos. 65; 81, 88, 91, 139, 142, 170, 172, 173 and 176.

Secretary Pearl Hanka read the minutes of the spring meeting which were accepted as read.

President Norval Crossman and 1st Vice President Alvin Sefcik appointed the following members on the Auditing

Committee: John Ordener, Eugene Veselka, and Bessie Findley, and also the Balloting Comm: Rosalee Kostom, Charlie Matcek and Jerry Trochazka.

Nominations for a rest home director were next in order. Brother J.M. Skrabanek announced that he would not be a candidate and nominated Brother Herbert Nowotny from Needville, seconded by Brother Tommie Lostak.

He conveyed that Brother Nowotny was a well-qualified candidate. He was mayor of Needville for six years. For nine years, a school trustee of which he was chairman for nine years; also in business shipping feed, flour, etc. since 1930, and had worked at the Needville Rest Home. There were no more nominations, so Brother Vine Heckler made a motion, seconded by Brother Jerry Prochazka to elect Brother Nowotny by acclamation.

Brother Herbert Nowotny thanked Brother Skrabanek and all the members for having confidence in him. He said he has been a member of our Society since 1944. He also mentioned that their new SPJST Hall was built when interest rates were low.

District V Treasurer Tommie Lostak gave the financial report of District V and the Youth Fund: $114.04 District V and $108.53 in the Youth Fund. This report was accepted.

District V Director Louis Hanus opened his report with a slogan, "Take pride; We do in District V." He reported: 1. As of September 30, 1979, we had 1137 real estate loans, for an investment of $21,500,000.

2. We had a record closing of $876,000 of loans for September.

3. As of Sept. 25, 1979, we had $1,600,000 worth of real estate loans committed and processed.

4. District V is #1 with issued insurance policies.

5. District V is #1 with total insurance dollars on the books.

6. Our Assets, as of September 30, 1979 were $26,728,000. Our Assets as of January 1, 1979 were $25,595,000. A gain in assets in nine months $1,133,000.

7. There are no lodges delinquent in District V. Brother Louis commented that SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas has done so much for our Society, and is a watch-dog of the monies that came in and go out.

The purpose of the slogan which was mentioned at the beginning of Louis's report was to liven up District V, he also has a plan to honor all presidents of all lodges in District V at the next Spring meeting.

DSR Evelyn Mikeska gave a lengthy

Wednesday, October 24, 1979 report on the insurance sales, our goal being $4,400,000 for 1979, and, so far, insurance sold is $3,368,000 with 578 members, which leaves us with $1,310,000.00 yet to sell. Her written report will be attached to the minutes.

Her final say was: she encouraged all the SRs to go after more business, it's there. She stated that a few SRs don't sell at all.

Assistant DYC Dan Berry gave the youth report, written by DYC Richard Wahlberg. In his report he gave notice of all the summer youth activities, the Youth Leaders' Training Sessions; Richard has been working very hard on reactivating Youth Clubs throughout the District and needs all the cooperation he can get. His report will be attached to the •minutes.

Brother J.M. Skrabanek, the rest homes director gave a short report. He said everything was fine currently; we have a little money; both homes operate full capacity for the last three or four years — head above the water! No. 1 Rest Home has 73 beds and No. 2 Rest Home has 58 beds, all 'occupied.

The Audit Committee reported all books in order. Brother Amos Kadlecek made a motion, seconded 13i r Brother Charlie Matcek, to accept the report.

Brother Herbert Nowotny was installed by SL Jerry Mikulas. He will commence his term January 1, 1980.

Brother Jerry Mikulas then gave his report. First, he conveyed greetings from all the SL officers. He complimented Brother Gebala for his one year service as vice •president. He said Fraternal Societies have to change, with the times to be successful. Our Assets are over $26,000,000. He mandated two big projects this year.

1. Screen members for the Vestnik, which saved much postage. 33% of the cards that were mailed out, were not mailed back.

2. Delegate count for Convention in San Antonio, beginning June 8, 1980: up to now we have 374 delegates. He complimented Brother Louis Hanus on his fine work. He also invited us to come to the headquarters to see the fine museum in which Brother Otto Hanus has done such excellent hard work.

Brother Mikulas said he was so honored to present Brother Lostak with the endowment check at the age of 96.

President Norval Crossman stated that Brother Jerry Mikulas really proved himself, as he promised at the last convention.

Announcements made as follows: Brother Victor Peter announced a turkey dinner at Lodge 142, November 10.

husband, Frank, sent a "thank you" card to members who attended their 50th wedding celebration. "Thank you" cards were also acknowledged from Sister Bessie Prochaska and Brother and Sister Ruzicka.

Members voted to have a "Family Day" instead of "Family Night" November 8th at approximately 12 noon, after our regular meeting that day. A big Thanksgiving dinner will be served by all members of the Circle.

The menu will be baked turkey with all trimmings, desserts and coffee or tea.

The dinner will be free to all members and their families living under one roof.

Others will be charged $3.00.

Sister Esta Bell Hubenak has returned from Atlanta, Georgia, where she attended a beautiful wedding of her niece, Sharon Mullins, to Roger Dennington on September 3rd. She is also a proud grandmother to Melissa.

Lee Anne Hubenak born recently. Sister Hubenak is the widow of Joe P. Hubenak, who was a member of SPJST Fraternally, Lodge No. 92.

Mrs. Pearl Hanka Sister Sunshine Easley won the door 6759 Cindy Lane prize.

Sister Frances Olexa suggested we do not engage a band for after the District V meetings, since usually everyone is tired and a distance away from home.

This will be decided by the District V officers at the next officers' meeting.

Another suggestion was made to charge 5 cents per member from 16 years up to get a little money for the District V to operate on.

Sister Mildred Holeman asked that we find out from the members as to how many want dances after the district meetings.

President Jerome Ermis, of Lodge 88, invited the Spring meeting to be held at Lodge 88 March 9, 1980.

Dear Readers and Editor: You will find me in this column with the translated words I have written for the Czech section. It takes good will and time to write in both sections. There are members who read my letters in the Vestnik and some of them express their kindness. It is enclosed with the valuable material for me to read, and maybe will be, also, for many others. I hope that it can be reprinted in the Vestnik some day. There are just a few reporters from the big city newspapers who are interested in the activities of the Texas Cecho-Moravians and Slovaks.

My compliments to Brother George and Mrs. Bonnie Carmack, reporters and columnist, for the San Antonio Express News. My compliments also go to the West Citizens for their accomplishments. We need more examples like Westfest in Texas.

Some newspapers send their reporters and photographers to our picnics or other activities but are rather stingy with publicity.

The Czecho-Moravian and Slovak immigrants never asked what United States can do for them. Instead they said: "What can we do for the new adopted country?" I wish to thank sincerely to the F.W. LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS

Dear Members: We missed several of our regulars at our monthly meeting last Monday. I cannot believe walking at the State Fair too much was the reason.

About the fair, wasn't it a nice day?

Our lodge was well-represented by the circles of Beseda dancers and also by the many Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra members who, along with members from other lodges, played beautiful music for your pleasure directed by Brother Sid Pokladnik. I guess just about everyone there enjoyed the Czech food available. Even our Dallas Mayor Robert Folsom, his wife, and part of their family were seen enjoying a klobase sandwich. Mayor Folsom was the guest speaker this year at the Band Shell. To him we say: THANK YOU! We appreciate his efforts to give our Czech Day a good start.

Our meeting was opened with Sister Lisa Sadecky leading the group with the pledge to our flag. Secretary Salac read the minutes of the last meeting which were approved. Also, a letter from Lodge 54, West inviting all to join in their 75th anniversary celebration. By the way, the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra has been invited to play for this occasion!

The new candidates for membership or those purchasing additional insurance during the last month are: Jerry Hall, Juanita Kolenovsky, Brother Benny Jarma and Brother Willie Gaiser.

Transferring to our lodge were Brother George Janicek, Michael Janicek, Paul Janicek and Mark Janicek. Welcome!

LODGE NO. 28, EAST BERNARD

Dear Members: As you all know, by now, our lodge, along with Lodge No. 148, El Maton, hosted the District VI SPJST fall meeting at the American Legion Hall in East Bernard. The meeting, although very long, ended without any loose ends.

Entertainment after the meeting was presented by the Victoria Czech Singers and the Gulf Coast Czech Singers. Also, scheduled was Brother Dybala and his dulcimer. We wish to apologize to Brother Dybala for this after he had to drive such a long distance. The reason for the cut off was pressure from our group which covered such items as: 1) The meeting took up too much time; 2) People are leaving for home and we still have to give out door prizes; 3) We still have some cakes to auction off; 4) The man with the keys to the hall wanted to close up and get home before sunset.

There were other factors but not as great as these.

The meal, after the meeting, was served single line buffet-style with sausage being served to the individuals.

Some of the sisters assisted in serving some of the pastries. There were 26 dozen kolaches baked by four fraternal sisters, Bartos, Brandi, Hanzelka and Kortis. There were numerous items of pastry, bread and other food, donated by persons of both lodges; too numerous to name here. Besides the pastries and sausage, there were pickles, spiced ham sandwiches on white bread and pimento cheese sandwiches on rye bread to round out the fair.

There were five cakes auctioned off at the end of festivities. The first cake baked and decorated by one of our new members, Sister Cynthia Kubicek was purchased by Brother Gebala, our Supreme Lodge vice-president. An Angel Food cake baked by Sister Nezval was purchased by Brother Matt Vanek, District VI director. Brother Charlie Bucek purchased a Chocolate Cake.

The other two cakes were purchased by brothers whose names I do not have but we wish to thank each and everyone of you for your purchases.

All in all there was enough food for everyone present. We, the officers of both lodges, wish to thank all of the persons (the kolache bakers, the sandwich makers, the cake and pastry bakers and all who helped in preparation of and serving of the food) for making those loaded tables possible through their hard work. To close I wish to add a quote from a visiting sister who said, "The table was fit for a king".

11 LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Brothers and Sisters: The last monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 47 was held Sunday, October 7th, 1979 at 2 p.m. with the president, Brother Jerry Pechal presiding.

Flag Bearers Gene Skrabanek and David Pechal led the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

A moment of silence was held in memory of departed Sisters Evelyn Robertson and Annie Olejnik. Our deepest sympathy to their families and may the departed rest in eternal peace and honor to their memories, forever!

Members were welcomed and visitors recognized were Ann Balusek, Mary Lou Skrabanek and Mary Lou's sister, Gertrude Lucksinger, of Tacoma, Washington. We enjoyed having you present and make plans to come again.

Secretary Ginger Klusacek read the roll call of officers and sales representatives and the minutes of the previous meeting and these were approved as read.

Correspondence included were: Mortuary dues to the Supreme Lodge, thank-you cards from the families of Sister Annie Olejnik and Brother Willie F. Andel for the flowers sent to their loved one's funeral service, a thankyou card from Bro. Leon L. Sodek for the get-well cards sent him (he passed away unexpectedly Oct. 8th); a letter from Sister Maxine Sefcik, secretary of Lodge 54, West regarding their 75th year of Lodge 54's existence and celebration December 2nd; and a letter from Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr., SL financial secretary, regarding the 13 convention delegates and 10 substitutes our lodge will be electing in the November 4th meeting.

On the sick list members reported were: Sisters Annie Mikeska and Mary Kohutek and Brother Leon L. Sodek (deceased now). We hope you sisters are recovering your health. Sisters Llorraine Maas, LaVerne Pechal and Marie Hruska were hospitalized since the meeting. Get well soon.

President Pechal reported that the bricks for the sign were laid the day before (Saturday, October 5th) by Brothers Raymond Bragewitz, Floyd Stuteville and Jerry Pechal, and helped some by Douglas Sodek and Bonnie Taylor. He asked for volunteers to be kitchen chairmen for November and December; so if you are willing to run the kitchen for a month, be sure to call President Pechal now, (Saturday, November 3rd would be the first time before the next meeting on November 4th.)

Sister Ruby L. Bolton gave the treasurer's report and Brother Willie Kohutek gave the membership status.

Chairmen's reports were heard and so was the auditors' quarterly report by Brother Emil J. Hejl. Board minutes were also read.

New members accepted were: Raymond Francis Motl, Edward John Mokry, Joseph N. Morris, Frankie Joe Bedrich, Jr., Sarah Ann Zavodny, and Donald Glenn Thomas; some were additional insurance. A warm welcome to each named. Edwin J. Malcik transferred to Lodge No. 24, Cyclone from our lodge.

Salary Committee Chairman, Woodrow Marek gave the proposed salary changes and this report was voted on and accepted.

The Nominating Committee was chosen and they are: Elmer Skrabanek, chairman, Gladys Marek and John Hruska.

The committee members to revise the Rules and Regulations are: Dan Balusek, chairman, Anton Motl, Alfred Klusacek, Sr., F.E. Hejl, Jr., Alice Banning, Dorothy Pechal and Dolores Skrabanek.

The members present having birthdays in October were: Leah Marek, L.J. Motl and Dan Balusek, and couples celebrating wedding anniversaries were: Dan and Ann Balusek and Alfred and Martha Klusacek. Sister Elsie Sodek stated that her parents, Frank and Frances Novosad were going to be married 70 years in October; a card was to be sent to this couple. Congratulations to all these named and a special congratulations to the Novosads. That is a great achievement!

Sister Dolores Skrabanek gave the youth leader's report: Eleven members, two visitors and three adults were present. She read a letter from Sister Genie Tepera; a resignation as assistant youth leader. We voted to accept her resignation with regrets and approved Brother Calvin Skrabanek, assistant youth leader for the remainder of 1979.

The youth club is still selling Shaklee products as a fund-raising. The social for the month will be the District II skating party at Skate Haven on Sunday, October 28th. Watch for District II youth counselor, Brother Frank Klinkovsky's report for more details. Sincere congratulations to Kelly Cavanaugh and Terry Loessin, queen and king candidates from District II who won the State Royalty titles at Burleson on September 29th; also, to Duke Lance Ebner and Duchess Brianna Bohac.

LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY

Dear Members: The October meeting was called to order by President Bill Hutka.

All officers were present and we had several new members, plus a guest, attending this meeting. We were happy to have you. I certainly hope you felt welcomed and pleased. Come back, it's great having you and we are so happy you joined Lodge 177. Our guest was Mindy Wheat from Shawnee, Kansas.

We were glad to have you and come again.

Lodge No. 177 members would like to express their condolences to the family of Leon Sodek. Leon was a member of Lodge No. 47. Also, Dorothy Lisenbe reported that David Reeves, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Reeves of Academy was in a Houston hospital. We, the members of Lodge 177, send our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

The minutes were read by Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe and were approved.

All committee chairmen gave very good reports with continued progress at our lodge.

Communications to our lodge were: a very fine thank-you note from the Rogers High School Superintendent, Mr. Wayne Cornelius, thanking our lodge and its members for the donation.

(Mr. Kohring is a member of Lodge 177). A letter from SL President Nick Morris was read commending the members for the donation to the school.

We also received a letter with tickets for various prizes from Lodge No. 54 in West. Brother Louis Driska made a motion we buy all the books. The motion was seconded by Jackie Beck.

The Board of Trustees met October 5th at 7:15 p.m. Otis Beck read the

following items that were discussed at the meeting: 1)Wimp Bland asked for the lodge for a benefit dance, auction, etc., for Randy Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Joe Moore. Randy has been in the hospital for a longtime with a lengthy illness. It was approved by the membership to let Wimp Bland be the chairman of this benefit occasion, and to have this benefit at our lodge in the near future.

2) The parking lot at the lodge was being looked into. We will pave more parking area and have the asphalt replaced around the lodge where it needs to be. Since the meeting the gravel is being hauled in and the area is being grated and some of the area will be asphalted, so we shall have much more and better parking spaces. Mr. Dixon was awarded the contract.

If we bear this thought in mind, I am certain that we can keep our great lodge moving forward in great leaps and bounds as it is doing now.

The cleaning of the lodge was discussed and President Bill Hutka stated he had met with the cleanup crew and things should be in better shape.

The Humane Society will have the lodge for October 28th, and the Little River-Academy Jaycees will have the lodge for November 29th. Bruce Tomastik stated that the Jaycees are having a barbecue and are inviting other Jaycees from around the state, so come out and support your Jaycees.

Youth Leader Betty Hawk gave her report. She had ten members, and four adults. They also planned their activities for the coming three months.

New members who joined our lodge are: Billy Jo Robinson, Adell Tyrock, Gary Scott Dixon, David Bennier, W.J. Bryan Washburne, David Veron Rodke, Julia Rodke, Michael W. Hutchings, Michael W. Watts, Shannon Denise Watts, Jessie Mae Washburne, Jessie Washburne and Thawsha Washburne.

President Hutka gave praises to our lodge sales representatives who are doing a great job for our lodge, and thank you to the new members for joining Lodge No. 177.

Dorothy Massey was in charge of the sealed bids on the juke box. The highest bidder was Curtis Hawk. Bettye Hawk reported no bids on the pool table.

Our next meeting will be held November 14 at 7:30 p.m., and we will elect a Nominating Committee. This committee will find the best people who are suited for offices of our lodge.

Remember, we are all in this together and we want officers who will work for our lodge and not for themselves. We want honest, courageous and hard-working members to be leaders of Lodge No. 177. We want the type of officers whom we had in the` past. Our present officers have done an

Dear Members: John and I arrived early at Vrazel's Hall in Danbury. People were just starting to arrive. The Veselkas of Lodge No. 142 had just arrived too, with Dennis; he was to take Mark Wahlberg's place while he was away in Dallas. That was really nice of Dennis but then he is such a nice boy.

Brother Norval Crossman called the meeting to order at 11:05 a.m. First Vice-President Alvin Sefcik hoped we have a happy day at Danbury, and we did.

Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr., SL financial secretary, and family plus Brother Louis Hanus, District V director, attended.

They were busy getting everything ready for the meeting, yet they took time to welcome all the members, friends and guests.

Brother Mikulas presented Brother R.J. Lostak'a 96-year endowment certificate.

It was a very special event. We all sang "Happy Birthday" to Brother Lostak. He seemed to be very happy.

Then we had our dinner break, and what a delicious meal! The cakes and pies were plentiful and very good.

The meeting resumed at 1:30 p.m. The youth program consisted of a couple of cute dances; they were very good.

The officials were introduced and one guest with recognition of past presidents of District V, and roll call of the lodges; ten lodges were present.

Reading of the minutes was by Secretary Pearl Hanka. There was no correspondence.

The Audit Committee was appointed.

Those serving were: John Ordener, Eugene Veselka and Bessie Findley.

Nomination for the rest homes director was next. Brother J. M. Skrabanek's term will end at the end of the year, and he did not want to run again. He had done a great job. Brother Charlie Matcek

LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA

Wednesday, October 24, 1979 nominated H.W. Nowotny. Brother Skrabanek and Brother Lostak supported Brother Nowotny. They had some good and outstanding things to say about him. John and I were at the same dinner table with him and his lovely wife, also Brother Charlie Matcek andi his lovely wife plus another couple from Lodge 81, Needville. We did enjoy them all.

Alvin Sefcik and Jerry Mikulas thanked Dennis for being on hand to help. I am sure Dennis was proud to do so. We had 118 or more people in attendance.

We then had a 15-minute break after which Treasurer Tommie Lostak gave his report.

Afterward District V Director Louis Hanus gave his report and commented on what a great job Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas has done and is still working sO hard at it. He also talked about his boyhood and dealings he had with Brother Skrabanek.

District V Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska gave her report and Rest Homes Director Skrabanek gave his report.

Assistant Youth Counselor Dan Berry read a letter from DYC Richard Wahlberg who was in Dallas with his family.

Then Brother Nowotny was installed by Brother Jerry Mikulas. He, in turn, commented on Louis Hanus and Vice President Bernard Gebala and what good work they are doing. I think we have some hard-working people in there and, of course, I missed Editor Rudy Sefcik and his lovely wife, Maxine. He had other commitments.

The Audit Committee reported everything was in order.

There was no old business and new business.

For myself and, I am sure I can speak for John on this, a dance after a meeting with good music and good friends has a happy ending and lots of us look forward for this. This is loving your friends that you do not get to see too often.

Announcement of homemade chili at Lodge No. 81, Needville sometime in February was made. The date will be in the Vestnik.

Lodge No. 88, Houston will have a Czech Day Sunday, October 28th, and our 10th anniversary of Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena and Czech Fair is November 11, 1979.

Our District V spring meeting will be held Sunday, March 9, 1980 at Lodge No. 88, Houston.

The meeting was then adjourned.

We then turned ourselves loose and had a great time dancing with our good friends, and what good friends we have in Jerry and Delores Prochazka, Gus and Ann Urbanovsky and, of course, Gladys

and Tommy Lostak. We met their beautiful daughter and what lovely people the Crossmans are. I almost forgot, my old neighbors, Brother and Sister Frank Tilich.

Clarence Baca played beautiful music; we all had a great time.

The Elgin SPJST held its regular meeting October 16, at 8 p.m.

The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Then everyone remained standing for a moment of silent tribute in memory for John Deba.

After roll call of officers, the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Afterward all other reports were given.

We are happy to have Margie Carlson and Marianne Carlson as our new members. Welcome to our lodge!

It was reported that our lodge had made over $1,000 in selling aluminum cans. A big thank you to Sister Albina Mogonye who sees that the cans are sacked and sold.

Our next project is to repair the parking area.

The annual chili supper and fall festival will be held Saturday, October 27th, starting at 6 p.m. There will be fun for everyone. Make plans to attend this gala affair.

Our work day for our lodge will be Saturday, November 3rd. Come as early as you can. There will be work for everyone.

At our November 20th meeting, there will be election of officers; also the delegates and alternates to the SPJST convention will be elected, so let's have a good turnout. We need everyone's help and support. I will see you November 20th at 8 p.m.

CZECH DAY AT LODGE 88

Dear Members, It is this Sunday (October 28th) that Lodge 88 has its annual Czech Day at 1435 Beall Street, Houston. We hope you have already made plans to be with us and enjoy the many activities panned. Delicious turkey and dressing with the trimmings will be served from 11:30 on.

There will not be a dull moment, for the Lodge Czech Concert rchestra will start playing at 12:15 and later will be joined by the Lodge Choral lub and the Victoria Singers. The orche tra and the two choral groups are great performers and will entertain you until 2:30 p.m.

The Dedication Program honoring members will start at 2:45. Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris will give a short address; if you have ever had the privilege to hear him, then you know it will be very interesting, for he is a dynamic speaker. You can also enjoy famous Ray Baca and his dulcimer and the popular Polish Dancers from the Polish National Alliance of Houston.

The two fine choral groups will give a grand finale of songs. Don't forget that you can enjoy all this great entertainment just by coming to Lodge 88 Sunday!

The Parade of Czech Costumes will start the FREE DANCE at 5 p.m. with the popular Vrazels playing. If you have a Czech costume, join the parade!

During the first intermission you will have the pleasure of seeing Lodge 88 Beseda Dancers perform! They are very good and have won trophies for their performances.

LODGE NO. 183, MID-CITIES

Dear Readers: Sunday, October 14th was Czech Day at the State Fair. We began the day of exciting activities by attending the Czech Mass in the downstairs auditorium of the Hall of State at 9 a.m.

The mass was celebrated by Most Rev. John Morkovsky, Bishop of GalvestonHouston and co-celebrants were Most Rev. Thomas Tschoepe, Bishop of Dallas and Most Rev. John J. Cassata, Bishop of Fort Worth. Choirs from Abbott, West and Dallas sang the Czech hymns. Attendance at this mass filled the auditorium to fullest capacity.

During the rest of the afternoon programs were held in the Band Shell, Women's Building, Texas Hall of State and Big Tex Stage. Many members of Lodge 183, Mid-Cities, along with numerous members of other lodges and societies were present and joined in celebrating the gala festivities.

14 good music, singing, dancing, cold refreshments and good food with a large contented crowd.

Tuesday evening, October 16th, an insurance information meeting was held in Burleson at Lodge 180. Sales representatives from Lodge 183 who attended this meeting included Bernard Hlavaty, Robert Sill, Inez Greenlees and Daniel Roznovsky. Maurine Hamilton was a guest. State Field Managers Silas Smith and Gene McBride conducted the meeting.

Dear Members: The October meeting was held in the home of Brother John and Sister LaVerne Hejl on October 7th, 1979.

We elected Brother Raymond Prasatik as our delegate to the convention next June. Brother Hejl was elected as our alternate delegate.

Beginning with our November meeting, a $5 cash door prize will be given. To be eligible, you must be a voting member of Lodge 155 and be present at the meeting.

Members of Lodge 155 and their guests will have a Christmas party at Luby's Cafeteria this year. The time and date will be discussed at the November meeting.

NO. 88, HOUSTON

District V meeting was held Sunday, October . 14 in the Vrazel's Hall in Danbury, Texas. The attendance was not overwhelming, but the meeting was interesting. District V president, Brother Orville ,Crossman conducted the meeting well. Secretary Sister Pearl Hanka read the very detailed minutes of the last district meeting.

It was a pleasure to have, with us, Financial Secretary Brother Jerry Mikulas and his beautiful wife and two children. At this meeting Brother Jerry Mikulas presented Brother Lostak, age 96, his endowment policy. Pictures were taken and I am sure these will be in our Vestnik.

It is sad to spend so much money for an. orchestra to play after the meeting, for the social, when there are so few

present; most of the attending members departed, for home after a brief good-bye. The dinner was good and especially the homebaked pastries furnished by the ladies of Lodge No. 139. All in all, it was a nice spent Sunday.

NEWSBRIEFS Frank B. Vrla of Ennis died at 6:30 a.m. October 17th in Mesquite Memorial Hospital, at the age of 84.

Services were held Friday at St. John's Catholic Church in Ennis, with Rev. Habermann officiating. Interment was held in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Ennis.

Brother Vrla was a longtime member of Lodge No. 25, Ennis. He was the father of Arnold and Frankie Vrla of Dallas, Millie Breden of Illinois and Mary Beran of Dallas.

She had been on the publication committee of the Supreme Lodge over 25 years. This committee has kept our Vestnik paper a true enterprize being fair to all persons and is also responsible for seeing that the editor and publisher follow the guide lines set up at each convention.

One of her latest projects was to complete eight beautiful costumes for the senior Beseda dance group. What a work of art!!!

She is now serving us as our second vice-president; her main duty being writing the news weekly to the Vestnik.

What a job. I don't know how many get well cards I have sent after reading of someone being ill through her letters, my only source of information; also keeping us informed on all coming events.

When I thought of this grand lady I thought on terms of what she has done for my family personally. My mother is a very proud 62 year old and when she came to Houston some 35 years ago, she made friends with this lady and has carried this friendship through the years.

Myself, being in the over 40 bunch, and one of many in that group who has always been able to go to her for guidance not only as a fratexpalist but on how to be a good wife, mover, and friend. My daughter, soon to be 21, has always been inspired by her because to the young she is encouraging them to reach out for their dreams, set their goals high and go for it.

Wouldn't it be nice if we all had what this lovely lady has, what her life has given back to her. Over three generations of both men and women saying "WE ADMIRE YOU, WE RESPECT YOU, WE LOVE YOU, AND TONIGHT WE HONOR YOU! HAPPY BIRTHDAY SISTER FRANCES OLEXA!!!

She had been a true fraternalist for over 59 years. In fact, she was married on the stage of the first Lodge 88 building. She has two sons, Henry and Ervin, Ervin being the architect of this building.

She had held every officer's position at Lodge No. 88 except that of president and that only because she chose not to run; as of yet, that is; don't count it out.

She is a chartered member of the Birthday Club Sisters holding every office in that club and was instrumental in the organizing of various groups, one being the "Busy Bees" a bandage wrapping brigade for the Red Cross

during World War I. She made thousands of kolaches for bake sales, bazaars, soldiers coming home, and fund-raising projects.

She is also a chartered member of the Hlahol Dramatic Club where she served as assistant director, prompter, and acted in over 100 plays both Czech and English - her first part being that of an angel in 1919 and I might add, that to some of us she's been one ever since. She is also a chartered member of the choral club and remains very active in it now.

She had been a sales representative for Lodge 88 over 35 years. During a number

Pramuk who is an American of Czechoslovak descent, will discuss his paintings at a slide lecture presentation

16 in Mayborn Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., followed by a reception in the Saulsbury Gallery, Thursday, October 25.

An associate professor of art at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Pramuk has balanced his geometric shapes with off-key colors to lure the viewer into his work. Pramuk's work "skates on the raw edges of bravado design", according to a review in the Houston Chronicle. "These collages of painted, cut papers tumble into place instinctively in dark off-key colors that give elegance to their basic playfulness.

Too beautifully orchestrated to be entirely spontaneous, the collages skillfully manipulate perception. Cut, painted strips of paper weave together and trail unexpectedly into painted sections. Sharp cuts are left as simple design elements instead of weaves.

December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor was attacked and the United States of America declared war on Japan and Germany and, in the early part of 1942, the division was transferred to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin where the division trained ski-troopers. As my brother, Eddie, and Dominic put it, this type of training was not appreciated by the men who were raised in the Central part of Texas, but later was very useful, and the men appreciated the foresight of their commanding officers.

June 1943 Dominic came home on a two-week furlough and convinced Marie that the best thing for them to do was to get married, so they could have more time together, and, on his return to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin he brought his sweetheart with him looking forward to living happily everafter. This came to an end in August of 1943 when Don and his division received their orders and were shipped overseas to Northern Ireland, and Marie returned to Texas and, as Marie puts it, (two years of nightmares and hell). It was over two years before Don returned. * The division was transferred from Northern Ireland to Wales, England taking intensive combat training and preparation for D-Day. Dominic and the Division landed D plus Eight Hours on Omaha Beach. In August 1944 Dominic and, his platoon were leading an attack and, as Don puts it, the lights went out for me. Dominic landed on a mine and, after two days in a field hospital unconscious, woke up on a stretcher.

After hospitalization in England, Don was sent back to re-join his company.

Dominic received his first Purple Heart for wounds received under enemy fire.

The division fought through Belgium and, after liberating Leige, Belgium the troops dug in the Siegfried line, for rest and re-grouping for a big push around 15th of December 1944. As Dominic puts it, one morning all hell broke loose.

The German army beat the Allied armies to the punch and the Battle of the Bulge offensive was on. The Second Division was hit hard and, finally, most of the troops fought in small groups until the third day, when the attack was finally broken; the division was regrouped and held their ground.

Late in January, 1945, the division went on the offensive again, capturing many cities and taking more and more prisoners.

Brad Teplicek RECEIVES 4-H CLUB AWARD Runnels County Gold Star Boy for 1979 is Brad Teplicek of Rowena. This was announced at the annual 4-H achievement banquet held October 1.

Brad has served as a junior leader in range management by helping junior members prepare for range indentification contests.

He has carried projects in foods and nutrition, safety, swine, and horticulture. He has been a member of the rifle team, wool and mohair judging team, range and pasture grass identification team and the range evaluation team.

Brad has served his club as vice president, county council delegate, and as a member of numerous committees.

The honor student, at Ballinger High School, also is a member of the football, basketball, track and tennis team. He is a member of the Student Council and is serving as president of the sophomore class.

Brad, 15, is the son of James and Beverly Teplicek of Rowena.

Beverly also received an award as this year's Outstanding Woman Adult Leader of the 4-H in Runnels County.

Brad has two brothers, Craig and Grant. He, and all his family, are members of the SPJST Lodge No. 49 in Rowena.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe V. Chlapek of Seaton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a buffet-reception on Saturday, October 20, 1979, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Seaton Brethren Church Fellowship Building. Hosts for the celebration were the couple's children:

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Novosad celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Wednesday afternoon at their home at 1114 South Main Street in Temple, Texas.

Mr. and Mrs. Marvin J. Chlapek of Pasadena, and Mr. and Mrs. Calvin J. Chlapek of Temple. The couple was married October 22, 1929 in Temple. He is a retired farmer and they have lived in the Seaton community all their lives.

They have two grandchildren.

They were married on October 17th, 1909 at Seaton Brethren Church by the Rev. Antonin Motycka.

Their children are Victor Novosad Corpus Christi, Elsie Sodek and Milton Novosad, both of Temple, and the late Frankic L. Novosad.

They have nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Novosad are members of Lodge No -17, Seaton.

Dear Members and Friends: The youth club meeting was held September 30th. The attendance was good. After the meeting the adult and youth club members cleaned the lodge building inside and outside, plus we set up the tables for the SPJST District III meeting which was held October 7th.

Sunday, October 14th, our youth club members danced the Moravian Beseda at the State Fair in Dallas.

Friday, October 19th, some of the youth members went to the West Trojan Homecoming. After the game we ate pizzas.

Sunday, October 21st, we went to Six Flags.

A Halloween party is set for Friday, October 26th, at 8 p.m. Bring a friend and let's have fun with spookhouse and all the goodies.

We also had a Dr. Pepper cap contest. The winners were Karen Hykel, 1st place; Darrell Uptmor, 2nd place; Damon Perez, 3rd place; and the rest of the youth members did a fine job. Thanks to all of you!

Letters From The Youth HOW I CAN BECOME A BETTER CITIZEN OF AMERICA BY BEING A MEMBER OF THE SPJST

By State Queen Kelly Cavanaugh Of District H, Lodge 20, Granger The transformation to godlessness and secularism, which is a system of beliefs that rejects all forms of religious faith and worship, is being imposed on us from every direction. Too few people are aware that it is occurring. Too few young people have alternatives to choose, other directions to take or God-fearing people to belong to.

It is with pride and gratitude that we remember our forefathers who were concerned with each other's welfare and established an organization, that not only provided life insurance, but promoted moral, cultural and economic progress among people.

In spite of her problems and burdens, America is still the brightest beacon of the free world. The will to build a better society in spite of everything survives, and given a new vision, it can prosper and grow.

Our Slavonic Benevolent Society of the State of Texas was founded on principles borrowed from the governing process of these United States of America. Czechoslovakian immigrants, fleeing oppression and injustice were the founding Fathers, and who better

than they, could appreciate the Democratic process.

It is a strongly entrenched minority that sometimes subverts our Constitution to make it serve the very opposite of its purpose. Edmund Burke, a shrewd British statesman, once said, "All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." The time for reversing that trend is now.

We can well look to the past, not for shallow remembrances, but for real insights into the political and psychological treasury that is there. As our freedoms are threatened on all sides, it would be well to cling to those principles that assure us equality and justice.

Let us resume an eternal watch over our freedoms, for it is a duty as well as the price of liberty under Law. Belonging to the SPJST which functions democratically and strongly supports all that is American will make me become a better citizen of this country.

Dear Readers, We had fifteen participants in our Halloween Costume Parade October 11th, 1979 at the Lodge 179 Warrenton Youth Club regular meeting.

Winners of the ugliest was Kimberly Gebhard as the fat umpire; prettiest was Rhonda Eckermann as Frankenstein's bride; most original was Staci Schoenst as little people, and most unusual was Melissa Wickel as the scarecrow.

Other members in costumes included: Lyn Leonhardt- vampire Jeanne Eckermann - lady of the evening Christie Klump - friendly ghost Sue Lynn Schoenst - gypsy fortune teller Ann Margaret Harper - modern fashion model Susan Harper - Japanese lady Anna Key - Hawaiian hula dancer Ronald Klump - regular man George Key - nobody Sammy Key - the Thing Gene Harper - killer wasp Our adult leaders were also winners in the adult contest. Doris Jean Eckermann won as most original, Jeanette Schoenst as ugliest, Paula Key as prettiest and Garda Siptek as most unusual.

We wish to thank Mrs. Falba Schoenberg, Mrs. Erwin'Oelkens and Mrs. Tiny Ziese as judges for the youth and Lyn Leonhardt, Jeanne Eckermann.

The youth club presented the prizes for the youth and adults which consisted of a closet plant for the ugliest, Santa Rosa ferno for the prettiest, rabbit foot plants for the most original, four roll packs of toilet paper for most unusual and large life saver suckers for all participants.

Staci Schoenst led the pledge of allegiance for the beginning of our business meeting.

A report was given on the movie "Meatballs" that we viewed October 10th.

Plans for bowling were tabled until a price arrangement could be made.

It was decided to take an educational tour of the Giddings State Home and School during their openhouse of October 21st. We agreed to meet at tke, Texas Station, Carmine, at 2 p.m. that Sunday. Following the tour, we also agreed to visit with the people of our community who are now in the Autumn Hill and Hennesey Nursing Homes in Giddings.

There was some discussion about our Christmas party. We will make Christmas ornaments for the tree at our November meeting. If you are an early shopper, buy a present in the $3 price range as if you were buying something for yourself. We will exchange gifts according to age and draw numbers.

Remember, the time change in November; the next meeting will begin , at 7 p.m. on November 8th.

Dear Members and Friends: We held our regular monthly meeting Sunday, October 7th, at 2 p.m.

Vice President Gene Skrabanek called the meeting to order. Then he called on Sharon Pavelka to lead us in the pledge of allegiance and club motto.

Sherry Skrabanek called the roll and read the minutes of the previous meeting. We had eleven members present and three visitors, Ronson Pechal, Dianne Pavelka and Mrs. Wilson.

We received some correspondence from Genie Tepera, our assistant youth leader.

Our social for the month is the District II skating party at the Skate Haven on October 28th, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Dear Readers: The Robstown Youth Club went to the 1979 Shrine Circus on October 7th. It was held at the Corpus Christi Memorial Coliseum at 3:30 p.m. The members went by cars to the circus.

There were a lot of things that everyone enjoyed. All of the animals were very thrilling to the smaller children. The trapeze artists were very daring, swinging way up in the top of the building. This was enjoyed by all who went.

September 29, the club members went to Bay Fest 79. This is an annual event in Corpus Christi. There is music, dancing and a lot of different food to eat. Everyone enjoys the great variety of art exhibits that are shown. There are many talented artists at Bay Fest.

The club is planning a Spook House for Halloween. It will be held October 28 at the Jackson Woods Scout Hut from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The charge will be 25 cents per person.

I would like to remind everyone that October 31 is the deadline for new members joining the club so that they can go to camp free next year and participate in YAD. Christmas will be coming up soon and the Robstown Youth Club has a lot of fun activities planned, so make sure that all members come to all the meetings, which are held the third Saturday of each month.

LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY Dear Members: Our meeting came to order October 10th in our SPJST youth room.

We had a visitor Bonnie Courtney and four new members, Jessica and Thawsha Washburne and Shannon and Michael Watts.

October 13th, we had our youth club Halloween party. We went to the Temple JC Carnival; afterward we went to McDonald's for supper.

November 19th, we plan to go to Skate Haven from 7 to 9 p.m. Our District II skating party will be held October 28th.

A newsletter will be sent out by our youth leader.

December 15th, we plan to make cards for Southern Manor Nursing Home.

December 19th at our youth meeting, we plan on exchanging names for our Christmas party. There is a $5 limit on the gifts.

Our next meeting will be held November 14th.

Dear Readers, State Royalty was held September 29th at Lodge No. 180 in Burleson. If you were not there, you did, indeed, miss a lot. Congratulations to the new King Terry Loessin and Queen Kelly Cavanaugh.

In the past year I have come closer to the people in the SPJST. I am very happy to have been able to represent such a wonderful organization such as the SPJST. It was a pleasure to meet so many people during my reign as State Queen. The friendships which I have encountered will have a lasting effect on my life. I hope I can continue to see many of those friends I have met.

The SPJST has a lot of opportunities for youth today. I hope many will see

this fact before they are too old to participate. I would like to thank all of those people who helped make my year as State Queen the best. You have my appreciation and blessing.

The SPJST summer camp at Val Verde was great. It was fun spending time with friends from other lodges.

District III YAD was exciting as ever and the drive to Longview was beautiful.

Friends met again, some in competition and others came to see the contests.

Dear Members, October 10th, a large group from the Warrenton Youth Club of Lodge No. 179 traveled to Brenham to see the movie "Meatballs" at the Simon Theatre. It was a very funny show and lots of ideas about camp. Following the movie the group went to Pizza Hut for refreshments and of course pizza. An enjoyable time was had by all.

Brother Rychlik was born 11 April 1935 in Edge, Texas. He was a lifelong resident of Brazos County. He was an engineering technician for the Highway Department for 25 years.

He also served in the US Army and was a member of the Northview Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lawanda Rychlik of Edge; sons, Bryon Rychlik of Bryan, Daniel Rychlik of Houston and Michael and Wesley, both of Edge.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on October 7th from the Froberg Funeral Home in Alvin.

MOTHER ones Jurica became a widow at age ;he lived alone, a simple life, on her with her family. The cows, ,:us, cats, and dogs helped pass time away. She never stopped work p ad never complained. She lived for her Oildren, her husband, her in-laws, g :andchildren, great-grandchildren and 1 : grandchildren. ite did not want a television set or If:phone but she did take the local .r 'the Shiner Gazette and the SPJST Vcstnik, American Sokol and other Ciech newspapers. She taught herself EUglish and the words that she didn't understand, or know the meaning of, she would look up in her Czech dictionary to English for translation.

She spoke very good English and could understand it very well.

Each Sunday afternoon her six children and their families gathered for a short visit. The table was set for all -Poppy seed cake, Kolache, apple strudel, sugar cookies, pies, her own home-made angel food cake (No one can ever make one like it). There were pickles, home-made bread, sausage and cheese. Coffee, milk and soda water for the kids. There was plenty for all; no one ever left her home hungry.

When relatives came there were always enough beds for all, she was the last to go to bed and the first to be up.

The kitchen was filled with the smell of good coffee waiting for you when you woke up.

She treated all of her children and their children the same. What one received, the other received the same.

On special days, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, we all went to Grandmother's house for dinner and supper. Those days will never be forgotten. We all enjoyed being together.

She loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren. They were all her family and at Christmas, each received a brand new $5 bill. On Easter each child received a brand new $1 bill.

There was never a wedding or shower that a gift wasn't sent. When a death or sickness occurred in the neighborhood or a friend she saw that flowers were sent. When each grandchild was born she came to see it with a new $5 bill.

When you visited in her home you never forgot her, a quiet, small lady with her dark hair pulled back into a bun on the back of her head. You were made to feel at home with food and drink and were always urged to return.

She never had a bad word to say about anybody, never complained or gossiped. She never told anyone how to live his life or how to raise his children but was always there when you needed her help. She was not. rich with money but shared what she had with those she loved and met throughout her life. She lived alone until four years ago when the eldest daughter took her to her home to care for her until her death.

She was always at home and so happy to see you when you came; she loved company and looked forward to Sundays when her friends and family came to visit.

She gave more of herself than she received, she worried about friends and her loved ones when they were sick, helping when she could, and on occasion, went to visit although she never like to leave her home. On her tables and walls were pictures from wedding day from her grandchildren, their school pictures, graduation and the grandchildren and so on through her great-grandchildren. Her home was a place for each and everyone, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She knew every picture though there were no names on them; she could name them all.

Mother: I was proud to call her my mother-in-law, but I called her mother.

She was so good to me, my boys and their children. I'm glad I can say I told her I loved her and kissed her when, she was alive. May she rest in peace. She was so dear to me and we will all miss her.

I know there is a special place in Heaven for her where she will be waiting for her family.

Mother, we miss you. God bless you.

ITEMS OF INTEREST HALLOWEEN COSTUME SAFETY This Halloween, check safety features for children's "trick or treating" costumes, advises Claudia Kerbel, a consumer information specialist.

Ms. Kerbel is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

She suggests these Halloween costume safety features: (1) Consider using make-up to decorate the face rather than wearing a mask which may block vision. Apply cold cream before putting on make-up for easy removal.

(2) Sew or glue reflective tape to both front and back of the costume. Be creative and incorporate the tape into the costume design.

(3) When possible, choose light-colored costumes -- they will be more visible to motorists.

(4) Check labels or packaging on bought costumes for flame-retardant finishes.

Children may be exposed to may direct sources of fire such as lighted pumpkins, colorful candies or open fires for toasting marshmallows.

(5) For home-sewn costumes, select fabrics with a flame-retardant finish.

(6) If costumes are too long, shorten them by hemming or cutting them off with pinking shears. This will lessen the chance of a child tripping or falling.

(7) If possible, give each child a flashlight to use at night. If he/she wants to carry a jack-o-lanter, put a flashlight inside -- never a candle.
