From The Editor Saturday, September 29th was our SPJST Youth Royalty Day held at Lodge No. 180, (DobrS, Zivot in Czech and the Good Life 'in English), Burleson and that lodge and its membership certainly lived up to their newly-adopted name-Good Life! They proved to be most gracious and friendly, fraternal hosts. The attendance and attention paid to the youth in competition was a credit to our SPJST Society and, certainly, no one left there with a feeling of dejection or despair; of course, there probably were some disappointments,. however, from my observation, our youthful members are all good sports and fraternal in spirit.

It makes this editor's heart swell with pride to see each one of them, whether they are number 1 or any other runner-up, congratulate each other after the tabulation is complete and the names are announced!

This year proved to be a very fortunate year for District II and, especially, for Lodge Komensky No. 20, Granger (named after Jan Amos Komensky the great educator of Czech descent and known as John Amos Comenius in Latin). That lodge's two contestants, who won at District II YAD, won again in State royalty and are the 1979-1980 king and queen. Their names - King Terry Loessin and Queen Kelly Cavanaugh. Congratulations to all who participated and, of course, to the winners, Lodge No. 20 and District II. We feel sure DYC Frankie Klinkovsky of District II will be proud and he should be! The day was enjoyed by all. * **

Fall (or Autumn) is here and arrived September 23rd when the path of the sun crossed over the equator from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern Hemisphere to change our seasons, however, here in the Central Texas area it actually became very evident Wednesday, October 3rd when the temperature reached a peak of 101 degrees (the hottest day of 1979) and then dropped to 49, a total of 52 degrees

by Thursday morning! Mark Twain stated that: "Everybody talks about the weather and nobody does anything about it." How True! Another truism is: "Do not try to predict Texas weather!"

There are predictions that there are some people who will freeze to death this winter because of the price of heating oil in the northern section of our United States of America. How sad for a country which has so much to offer! Think about it! We all were asked to not ask more

Although our "insurance written" figure for this year is $177,500 less than for the same period of 1978, it is felt that you are doing an exceptional job. *** Mrs. Mary Josephine Hrachovy, 73, of Bellmead, died Sunday, September 30th in a Waco hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 2nd at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bellmead, with burial in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery near West. Sister Hrachovy was a member of Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville.

Reunions VITEK REUNION The descendants of the Joseph, Martin and Thomas Vitek will hold their 19th annual family reunion at the Seaton Star Hall on Sunday, October 14th, 1979.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. A basket lunch (noon meal) will be served at 12 noon, and a short business meeting and prizes as last year will follow. Family members who may not have received an invitation are being invited, as well as friends of the family and special guests.

Make plans to be there and make this year's the largest gathering ever.

Everyone who attended said they really enjoyed the music. Several of us were gone to Burleson to attend State Royalty and didn't have the pleasure of hearing them.

The weather has been so nice here. It has been nice and cool and quite a few people are enjoying the opportunity to get out to do some yard work without burning completely up.

DAY AT LODGE NO. 88

Dear Members, Lodge No. 88 is making great plans for our annual Czech Day on Sunday, October 28th, at our lodge 1435 Beall Street, Houston. The officers and members extend a special invitation to the officers of the Supreme Lodge and the editor and their families and to all you members and friends.

The day starts with a turkey dinner served from 11:30 on. Great entertainment will be in the Chandelier Ballroom from 12:15 to 2:30 provided by the Lodge Czech Concert Orchestra, the Lodge Choral Club and the Victoria Singers.

The program honoring twenty dedicated members will start at 2:45 p.m.

Highlights of this program will be an address by a most interesting speaker.

Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris, dulcimer music by Ray Baca, dances by the Polish National Alliance of Houston dancers, and two songs by the two choral groups combined.

The Parade of Czech Costumes starts the FREE dance with music by the famous Vrazel Orchestra. During the first intermission several groups of Lodge 88 Beseda dancers will perform.

NO. 88, HOUSTON

The last dance in the month of September with music by the Patek Orchestra was enjoyed by many polka loving people. The Hosting Committee was Franklin Bravenec in charge with his dear wife Almeda. Milton Elolf and his wife, Gladys, welcomed and seated the arriving guests.

At this dance Brother John Vasula at Table No. 7, celebrated his birthday without fanfare; he just wouldn't let on to be 39, but his wife, Bessie, made a request for the lovely number, "My Happiness," which they enjoyed dancing together. Happy Birthday, John!

Our Choral Club of Lodge No. 88 was quite busy lately with guest appearances on Monday, September 24th, we performed at the Houston Astro Hall and then on September 30th in Schulenburg at the Fall Festival of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, which we enjoyed and were glad to do.

The Little House on the Prairie close to Schulenburg, is the home of Bill and Evelyn Vornsand. That Sunday morning, September 30th, it turned out to be a very busy place. About 10 o'clock cars were driving into their yard from the Houston direction, filled with friends to enjoy the pleasant hospitality

8 of Bill and Evelyn. Everything in and around the little house was neat like a pin and the two smiling faces in front to greet everyone with a hug and kiss, the place turned into a lively beehive.

The occasion was Bill's and Evelyn's wedding anniversary; they got married on October 3, 1942 and are happy as a lark for 37 years. And to top it off, Evelyn had her birthday yesterday (which was September 29th). Congratulations and best wishes were expressed all around. Evelyn and Bill prepared food that weighed down a large and lovely-set table with two decorated cakes in the center. One cake to symbolize the 37 years of married life and the other for Evelyn's birthday.

Refreshments were served and enjoyed with the delicious food and toasts to the celebrants rang out all over the place.

All present were dressed in our Czech costumes because we were performing at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg, at 1 p.m. We all stayed for several hours to enjoy old acquaintances with music by good orchestras to dance to. Again, we all congregated at Bill's and Evelyn's Little House on the Prairie to enjoy some more of their hospitality before parting to go back to our homes. It was a nice-spent day and our best wishes and thanks to Bill and Evelyn Vornsand.

May they live happily ever after.

Sister Elizabeth Rybak passed away September 29th, 1979 after a lengthy illness in Heights Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F. Rybak. Rosary was held at 8 p.m. Monday in the Waltrip Chapel.

Funeral services and mass were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 2nd in the St. Jerome Catholic Church, with Reverend James Nguyen and Reverend Bert Miller officiating. Mrs. Elizabeth Rybak was laid to rest in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Survivors include daughters, Stacie Kocich, Mary Koudelka, Irene Ruffin, Emma Bowerman, all of Houston and Helen Wood of Atlanta, Georgia; Victor Rybak of Hallettsville, Joe Rybak and George Rybak, both of Houston. We extend our sincere sympathy to the surviving family.

VESTNfIC Brother Ed Kocich, age 79, of San Angelo, Texas, passed away September 28th, 1979. Funeral services were held in the St. Ambrose Catholic Church on September 29th. He was laid to rest in Wall, Texas. Survivors include his ,vife, Martha Kocich; one son, Weldon Kocich; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. May he rest in peace.

Lodge No. 88 Czech Day will be October 28th. Come out and enjoy a full day of good entertainment. Turkey dinner will be served with all the trimmings. In the afternoon good entertainment and the parade of costumes, and a FREE dance with the Vrazels will follow.

Our regular quarterly meeting was well-attended by our faithful members.

The minutes of the preceding meetings were read by Brother Kenneth Bryson (who was standing in for our regular secretary), Sister Wanda Warren who was away on vacation.

The regular business was well-organized and presented by the officers. Sister Helen Bryson, financial secretary, reported three new members who we cordially accepted.

Our main item of discussion was the Lodge No. 175 history. We are having a difficult time gathering enough of the beginning of our lodge to make a worthwhile presentation. The original officers are deceased or moved and records are skimpy or scattered. If there is anyone reading this who can be of help on this project, please contact any of our officers or members.

SOKOL CORPUS CHRISTI

The Sokol Southern District Advanced Instructors' Course was held in Corpus Christi at- SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Hall, from August 13th to August 18th, 1979. This was Corpus Christi's first time to host this course.

There were twenty-four students from three Sokol districts. The head instructor was Brother Jerry Milan of Fort Worth, assisted by Sister Norma Zabka of West New York, New Jersey and Brother Joe Vrzalik of Baltimore, Maryland. The students were taught

safety, apparatus terminology, calesthenics terminology, marching, games, Sokol history, Czech song singing, spotting and self-improvement. They were required to write each, their own routine, on an apparatus of their choice.

They were also divided into groups and planned a schedule for a regular gym class for one night, including a warm-up, opening, apparatus, game and formal closing: with this each student was given the opportunity to teach. The course was very successful and informative. They also had a lot of fun along with the work. All the meals were cooked and served in the Sokol Hall and for all the hard-work involved in serving three meals a day for a week, a big THANK YOU goes to Jerry and Jill Sijansky and the crew who helped them, they certainly worked hard and long hours.

Just prior to the course, a volleyball tournament was held Saturday, August 11th at Sokol Hall, Corpus Christi. A total of fifteen teams competed, representing Sokols from Dallas, Fort Worth, Ennis, Houston and. Corpus Christi. Sokol Zizka Dallas, won junior mixed and women's division and Sokol Fort Worth won senior mixed and men's division.

A beach party followed and this was thoroughly enjoyed by all visiting Sokols from Southern District and students from Eastern and Western districts.

They liked it so well, that they asked to come back so the 1980 volleyball tournament will be in Corpus Christi next August.

Some of the Texas students and instructors are also SPJST members.

NEWS FROM CORPUS CHRISTI AND ROBSTOWN

The dance sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas on Sunday, September 9th was an overwhelming success. There were many attending from area towns and a large crowd enjoyed the music and dancing at the SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Hall.

Corpus Christi Mayor Luther Jones proclaimed Sunday, September 9th, 1979 as Czech Heritage Society Day. He also presented a key to the city to the oldest honoree present, who was Brother Adolph Sassin, Sr. of Corpus Christi. The elder members who had passed the 80th birthday were the honorees. Those present were Julie Brandesky, Joe Henry, Al Scheffel, Joe

Wedhesday . October 10, 1979 Mrazek, Sr., Adolph Sassin, Sr., John Stasa, Alice Hlavenka, George Havelka, Mary Valenta, Sophie Kollaja, Vlasta Mrazek, Isabel Ondrusek, all from Corpus Christi and area towns, except Mary Valenta, a visitor from Granger.

The oldest was 93-year-old Adolph Sassin and the youngest was 80-year-old Vlasta Mrazek. Many readers will recognize John Stasa who _is only 88 years young who writes in Czech to the Vestnik and other papers. He has been an SPJST member more than 60 years and is a member of Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi. Other SPJST members, are Vlasta Mrazek, over 60 years who is a member of Lodge No. 117 in Robstown. She is known as "The Polka Party Queen," because she loves to dance and goes dancing often. Adolph Sassin, Sr., has been a member for over 67 years and is a member of Lodge No. 21 in Engle, although he lives in Corpus Christi. Joe Mrazek, Sr., has been a member for over 64 years and is a member of Lodge No. 117, Robstown.

He lives in Aqua Dulce. The Mrazek family is among the earliest settlers in Robstown going back to the early 1900's.

This was the third dance sponsored

by Czech Heritage Society and early in 1980 there will be more entertainment.

This year, for the first time, a plaque of appreciation was awarded to Brother Jerry Sijansky for his many years of devotion working with and for the Sokols and the Sokol youth. This was a surprise award and a very serving one.

The Robstown Community Hall annual barbecue and dance was a success with a good turnout to really enjoy the delicious food and good music. The whole day proved to be a financial boost for the hall, especially the auction, which was very good. The day started with a sad note, just a week before, the acting manager, Fred Horak died suddenly but everything worked out with the cooperation of directors and members. Our sympathy is extended to the family of the late Fred Horak.

Coming back to Robstown Community Hall on Saturday, October 13th are the , Edna Polka Boys, so get your dancing shoes ready for that dance.

There were several dances scheduled at the Corpus Christi SPJST and Sokol Hall. The first one is Saturday, October 20th, the music will be by Pavelka's then Saturday, November 3rd, music will be by Majek's. Then a treat is coming Saturday, November 10th, the dance is sponsored by Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi and the music will be by the Bay City Dutchmen, making their first appearance at the lodge hall.

Richard Cordes SCOUT RICHARD CORDES RECEIVES CERTIFICATE OF MERIT FOR SAVING FATHER'S LIFE Richard Cordes, Boy Scout with rank of life, was presented a certificate of merit in Troop 35's Court of Honor on September 17th, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, the troop's sponsor. Thomas Wehmeyer is scoutmaster for this troop.

A summary of the life-saving event follows: On March 29th, 1979, Richard and his parents went to a restaurant for dinner after attending a church baseball game. After having eaten dinner, Mr. Calvin Cordes began to feel bad and took

one of his netroglycerin tablets. As he reached for a second tablet, he slumped in his chair unconscious. Mrs. Cordes asked if his heart was bothering him; but, receiving no answer, she went to summon assistance.

Richard, realizing what was happening, lifted his father from the chair and laid him on the floor. In checking his father for heartbeat and breathing, he found none; so he started applying Cardio Pulmonary Rescusitation. He applied CPR for 20 to 30 minutes, when the Houston Fire Department Paramedics arrived and took over. By applying CPR as he did, he was able to keep oxygen going into his father's lungs and brain.

Doctors at the hospital later informed Richard that had he not applied CPR as he did, his father would not have made it to the hospital alive.

Richard had become interested in CPR while he was working on his First Aid Merit Badge led by Billy Radtke of Troop 35. Radtke had discussed CPR with the Scout group.

The story has a happy ending: After the needed heart surgery and recuperation, Calvin Cordes has returned as an assistant scoutmaster of Troop 35; and Richard has been elected senior patrol leader of the troop.

Cordes's doctor stressed he (Cordes) was fortunate, not only in his son's applying the right techniques, but also that he did not smoke and that he had had nothing to drink with alcohol because the medicine he had to have immediately could not have been used.

Richard is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cordes of Fayetteville, Texas and Mrs. Allie Mae Ford of Baytown.

Richard and his family are members of Pokrok Houston Lodge No. 88.

ACADEMY LODGE CONTINUES DONATIONS TO WORTHWHILE COMMUNITY CAUSES Lodge No. 177, Academy believes in supporting worthwhile community endeavors and has done so over the past several years. The lodge has made generous contributions to the local high school in Academy, elementary school, Belton High School Band, and numerous other community projects down through the years.

The most recent donations include a donation of $700 to the Academy School Board for the purchase of furniture for the new elementary school and a $500 donation to Rogers High School toward the purchase of a camera for filming sports and band activities. The accompanying photograph shows Lodge President Bill Hutka presenting the check to Rogers ISD Superintendent Wayne Cornelius.

CZECH CLASSES AT BRAZOSPORT COMMUNITY COLLEGE The Czech classes scheduled to begin at Brazosport Community College in Lake Jackson, Texas will begin October 16th at 7 to 10 p.m. Registration can be made anytime through October 16th prior beginning of the class.

Czech II Advanced Class will be offered beginning Thursday night, October 18th from 7 to 10 p.m.

The Czech language will be taught by a lady from Czechoslovakia: her name is Mrs. Ilka Subrtova Smith.

The class includes language, reading, writing, history and culture of Czech people. Also music and customs of the land.

Plans have been formed to establish a Czech language club. The club should be established early this fall offering many points of interest to the Czech language students.

Wednesday. October 10, 1979 HYZAK-VACULIN WEDDING Judy Ann Hyzak and Eugene Joseph Vaculin were married Saturday, October 6 in the afternoon in a double ring ceremony at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Granger.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Hyzak of Granger. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Vaculin of Marak.

The Reverend Harry S. Bilski of Temple performed the ceremony. Music was provided by Phyllis Kurtin of Granger, organist and Joyce Anderson of Georgetown, soloist.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a candlelight, silk organza gown with a Queen Anne's neckline.

The bodice was trimmed with jeweled alencon lace and pearls. Lace appliques scalloped the hemline of the skirt.

Miss Debbie Hyzak of Temple, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Mrs. Laura Vaculin of Buckholts was matron of honor. Bridesmaids were: Miss Diane Bartek of Temple, Mrs. Cathie Vaculin of Lorena, Miss Janet Trdy of Cameron, Miss Lisa Vaculin of Marak, sister of the groom, Miss Kathy Mazoch of Corpus Christi, Miss Jeanie Vaculin of Marak, sister of the groom, Mrs. Linda Dohnalik of Cameron and Miss Ruth Marek of Temple.

Tommy Vaculin of Buckholts, brother of the groom, was best man.

The reception, supper and dance was held in the Granger Recreation Center.

Music was provided by Jodie Jay and the Silvertones.

The bride, a graduate of Granger High School, attended Temple Junior College and is employed by the Texas Department of Public Safety in Temple.

The bridegroom, a graduate of C.H. Yoe High School in Cameron,is a farmerand rancher in Marak.

The rehearsal supper was given by the bridegroom's parents Friday night at the Granger Recreation Center.

After a trip to Louisiana, the couple

will live in Buckholts.

Judy is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

YOUTH SECTION From The State Youth Director Now that school has been back in session about a month and the summer vacations and activities are just a memory, I hope to see all of you boys and girls making that extra effort to attend the SPJST Youth Club meetings and monthly activities. Now is the time to get your attendance in so you will be eligible next summer for the district YADs and camp. It is very disappointing to find out in May that you need just a meeting or two to be eligible to participate in the activities that we all look forward to during the summer. Another reason for attending the meetings is that your presence adds just a little more money to the treasury.

NOW, this month is the time to talk to your friends about joining the youth club. They must have their policies written up before Oct. 31 if they want to go with you to camp next summer. The holiday season is nearing and that is always a good time in our youth clubs.

The overall attendance is down slightly from this time last year so we need the encouragement from you boys and girls to get new members into our SPJST. Help a friend, encourage them to get involved in a worthwhile program like our SPJST Youth Clubs.

State YAD and State Royalty are over for this year. Now is a good time to start planning on what you will enter next year and how you can work on a new talent so when time comes to fill in the YAD cards you can have as many entries as possible and more chances to come in a winner. The number of years you have entered or the number of entries you have had at the Dist. YAD in the past are no longer of interest.

Whether you won or lost is not the issue now, that is past history and you need to work on future plans. Even though next summer seems a long way off now, it will sure help if you can have your craft items ready early and your talent entries well perfected before then.

Youth Leaders, this is really a fun time of the year coming up: October is

13 the time for that spook house and Halloween party. November brings thoughts and plans for Thanksgiving.

Then of course in December are the wonderful Christmas programs and parties. Soon after the New Year's parties are Valentine parties and Easter, April 6, 1980. Now is the time to show your strong interest and enthusiasm for the youth and plan the activities several months in advance so there will be that constant interest to come to the meetings and be involved in making definite plans for these special events coming up. Keep in mind too, that June, 1980 will be our SPJST convention. We will haVe the rules in the Vestnik soon for the Miss SPJST contest.

From The District Youth Counselors DISTRICT II Hello everyone in District II. We went to the State Royalty contest in Burleson on Saturday, September 29th and really hit the jackpot, our district king and queen contestants both won first place at State and so we have State King Terry Loessin and State Queen Kelly Cavanaugh and both of these youth members are from Lodge 20 in Granger,• so everyone from our district was happy for these youngsters. Although there were many good speeches and many pretty queen contestants and welldressed and good looking young men competing in the State Royalty, I still feel that they are all winners because they were winners in their districts.

Congratulations Kelly and Terry and also to Duke Lance Ebner and Duchess Brianna Bohac.

We will have our last activity for District II for 1979 and that will be a skating party on Sunday, October 28th starting at 5 p.m. and it will last until about 7:30 p.m. This will be again at Skate Haven in Temple, just north from Temple High School. We will have door prizes and again you will be allowed to bring a friend if you wish. The admission will be paid by the district

Each girl and boy who made a speech should really be proud because their lodge really thought a lot about them or they wouldn't have been there. They were all winners in the people's eyes who attended.

The social games have really been having good attendance. We will miss having Ralph Smith and his wife Hazel with us next Tuesday. But they will probably be able to make it next time.

The social games are every Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend. We have free popcorn and a lot of fun visiting with all the people.

We are glad to have Billy Bobalik with us again. We hope he keeps improving and feeling better.

The youth members are having their garage sale Saturday, October 13th at the Davy Crockett Park Pavilion. If anyone has anything they would like to donate to the lodge to be put in the garage sale, please contact Elaine Erwin at 544-7510 or Charlene Bennett at 544-7708. All donations will be greatly appreciated and will be picked up for you if needed. The money made at the garage sale will all be donated to the mother lodge for the installation of a new dance floor.

We are also going to set up a donation box and posters for anyone who would like to help us in this project. Everyone will benefit from a new floor, even the children so please remember this when you see our posters.

Our District VI meeting was held September 23rd at the American Legion Hall in East Bernard. We sold tickets on linen and household items. Six of our members sang "Louka Zelena." The ones who sang were Lori and Jody Henderson, Joseph, Veronica, Patrick and Mary Ann Bartos.

Plans were also made to go to Six Flags on October 7th and we agreed to leave about 8:30 a.m.

We are also planning to have a Halloween party for October 28th, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Prizes will be given for the best costumes. Everyone is asked to bring a guest.

Lodge 88 teen Beseda group got their Czech costumes, and we would like to thank Mrs. Frances Olexa for putting in her time and effort.

Saturday, September 22nd, the teen group danced the Beseda at the Miller Outdoor Theatre. There were youngsters dancing at the theatre to many different nationalities.

Saturday, October 28th will be Lodge 8t's annual Czech Day. By the time this letter gets printed State Royalty will be overwith, but I still would like to wish our District V King Mark Wahlberg and District V Queen Vivian Hegwood the best of luck.

By Frances McDonald Rt. 2, Box 899 Corpus Christi, Texas 78410 Lodge No. 117, Robstown District VII The region of Bohemia is both the cultural and the economic center of Czechoslovakia. It is densely populated and its agriculture and industry are both highly advanced.

Prague, the capital of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic occupies an area of seventy-two square miles on the banks of the Vltava River. It is the seat of the national government and its ancient castle has been the stronghold of central government in Bohemia since' the ninth century A.D. The Old and Lesser Towns are linked across the Vltava by the fourteenth century Charles Bridge.

Prague is both an administrative and cultural center and a center of heavy industry. It accounts for eleven per cent of the country's industrial production. It' has many fine museums, theaters and art galleries.

Ceske Budejovice is the commercial center of Southern Bohemia. The city dates back to the thirteenth century and was formally a center of German influence. It is an important center for light engineering, timber, clay and breweries.

Hradec Kralovy stands on rising ground where the Orlice and Elbe Rivers flow together. In the tenth century it was occupied by a fortified market town on the trade route between Prague and Cracow, Poland. It, has become a center for the lumbering, tanning and engineering industries.

Kladno is an expanding industrial city situated in the center of extensive coal fields eighteen miles west-northwest of Prague.

Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) is a spa and holiday resort situated in the Krulne Hory, 1225 feet above sea level where the Tepla and Eger Rivers flow together.

Emperor Charles IV, founded the town after discovering mineral springs. It is the site of an annual film festival.

Plzen, in west Bohemia, is the site of the largest engineering works in Czechoslovakia "The Skoda Works", a huge complex produces armaments, turbines, locomotives and machine tools. It has been modernized since World War II and now is rebuilt on a larger scale.

Plzen is known throughout the world under the name of Pilsen, as the center of production of Pilsner beer.

Brno, the historical and economic capital of Moravia is situated at the confluence of the Svratka and Svetava Rivers. It is dominated by the two hills

16 Petrov and Spilberk , former site of a fifteenth century cathedral. It is a cultural and educational center and also a center of industry. Its industries include automobile, breweries, textile mills, flour mills, canneries and ironworks.

Olomouc, is in the center of fertile plain at the confluence of the Bystrice and Vltava Rivers. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Moravia until 1640. The modern city is important as a commercial center.

Ostrava, is the center of the mining and metallurgical industries. It is situated on the left bank of the Ostrawitsa River.

Coal production in the area is closely linked with the iron and steel works, among the largest in Europe, such as the Vitkovice Iron Works and the New Klement Gottwald Iron and Steelworks.

Bratislava is situated at the foot of the Carpathian range on the left bank of the Danube River. The present city dates from around 1000 A.D. Some buildings of the thirteenth century still remain. It is an important river port and a road and rail junction, also a center for the production of textiles, household articles and foodstuffs.

Gottwaldov, formally known as Zlin, is a modern city which is a center of the boat and shoe industry.

Kosice, situated on the right bank of the Hernad River, is an industrial and communications center. It is a road and rail junction and a center of engineering.

It was founded in the thirteenth century.

Peasants tilled the land with horse-drawn plows and primitive tools; now mechanization has taken place only recently on the co-operative and state farms, which since World War II, have accounted for nearly all of the farm land in Czechoslovakia.

Brother Smaistrla was a lifelong West resident and married Helen Wernet in 1924. She died, in 1977.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, KJT and SPJST Lodge No. 54 and the West Volunteer Fire Department.

He was also an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus No. 2305 and a charter member of West Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Charles Smaistrla of Arlington; two daughters, Mrs. JoAnn Gerik of West and Mrs. George (Joyce) Kostohryz of Fort Worth; one sister, Mrs. Tom (Wilma) Scanio of Waco; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

"OURS IS THE HARVEST OF THE COURAGE" AN ACCOUNT OF THE FIRST GROUP MIGRATIONS OF CZECHS TO TEXAS By John T. Kroulik In Collaboration With Willye Mae [ ttla] Oliphint and Albert J. Blaha, Sr. THE FIRST GROUP MIGRATIONS OF CZECHS TO TEXAS This is an account of the first group migrations of Czechs to Texas during 1851-53. It tells why they were willing to leave their beloved homeland, why they chose to come to Texas, and some of the difficulties they encountered in their journeys. While these were the first GROUPS of Czechs to come to Texas, they were not the first Czechs to do so.

Among the first Czechs to come to Texas were Dr. Antonin M. DignovitY (1832), Bedrich Lemsky (1836), the Reverend Bohumir Menzel (1840), the Reverend Josef Arnogt Bergman (1849), Viclay MatejoyskS; (1850), and perhaps others. The above Czechs came either alone or with their families as members of German or Dutch groups. They were not accompanied by groups of other Czechs.

The Reverend Bergman, who came to Cat Spring, Austin County, Texas in 1849, was largely responsible for the first two groups of Czechs to become interested in immigrating to Texas. He wrote letters to Josef Lidumil Legikar and other people in Europe about Texas. Some of the letters were circulated among the people and were also reproduced in the MORAVSKg NOVINV, a Czech-language newspaper ' which was circulated in Moravia and in Cechy.

The favorable reports about America which were written by Karel Antonin Postl, a native of Moravia who wrote under the pen name of Charles Sealsfield, may also have had some influence on the enthusiasm of the first two groups. Postl's work definitely had an effect on later Czech immigration.

Bergman wrote glowing letters about the Cat Spring area. He liked the climate—apparently he must have encountered some unusually mild summers. He was impressed with the abundance of available land with timber rand water. He liked the local people,

22 demand for their work. Living conditions were very congested. Often more than twenty individuals lived in one small cottage. The people were poor; perhaps at times even hungry.

By the end of 1848 the Czechs felt that they had little chance of gaining relief from the authority of the church and the absolutism of Austria's repressive regime. Therefore, the encouraging letters about Texas from Bergman shortly afterward were welcome, and there was much enthusiasm about starting a new life in a new land. Meetings were held, and plans were formulated for the transfer.

Much of this planning was done under the leadership of Josef Lidumil Leikar.

Lesikar was born to Josef and Rozalie (Prokop) Lesikar of Herbortice, Cechy on May 16, 1806. As a young man he spent some time in the Banat area of the Balkans. Later he settled in Nepomuky, Cechy, where he was a tailor. He was a Notary Public, and also served as secretary to the Justice of the Peace.

The Hapsburgs considered him an agitator. Josef Lidumil Lesikar married Terezie Silar„claughter , of Jan and Rozalie (Rypl) Silar of Nepomuky, on February 18, 1828. Josef Lidumil Lesikar and Terezie Silar Lesikar were the great-grandparents of this writer.

How the Czechs of the Lan§kroun, eechy area prepared for their departure has been largely described by Frantigek Sitar (1) of Nepomuky, Czechoslovakia, who researched many of the documents still available in Czechoslovakia. On August 19, 1851, about 118 passports were issued to Czechs desiring to leave their homeland. Most of the people began `making final preparations for the journey. They sold their property, if they had any, and many of their 'personal belongings in order to have enough money to make the journey and hopefully to have enough left to purchase land and the essentials to live in the new land.

As the day for departure approached, however, about 44 of the people who had obtained passports decided, for various reasons, not to go. One of the families deciding not to leave was the Josef Lidumil Le gikar family. He, his wife, and their four sons had passports to leave in 1851. But at the last moment, Mrs. Lekikar decided that she simply could not abandon her roots and her way of life and start over in an alien

land. This left the group without dominant leader, but apparently the 61-year old widow from Nepomuky, Mrs. Pavel (Johanna Balcar) Sitar, became the spokesperson for the group.

This partially blind and devout Christian woman was leaving her homeland with eight of her children and nineteen grandchildren.

On November 6, 1851, about 74 Czechs left their homes in Albrechtic, Dolni Heimanic, Horni Cermna, Horni Tresriovec and Nepomuky, all small villages near the town of Langkroun, CecJiy—near Moravia--to board the train in Usti nad Orlic(, for the first leg of the long journey ahead. The boarding of the train at 4:30 a.m. on November 7, 1851 was a very emotional experience not only for those who were leaving their homeland forever, but also for the relatives and friends who stayed behind.

The group left Usti nad Orlicl for Hamburg, Germany, where they were scheduled to board a German ship directly for Galveston, Texas. Misfortune beset the Czechs in Hamburg, where they were defrauded by a "con" person by the name of Hirman, who talked them into abandoning their plans of taking the German ship directly to Galveston and taking instead a ship from Hamburg to Liverpool, England, boarding another ship at Liverpool bound for New Orleans, Louisiana, and finally a third ship to Galveston, Texas.

His selling points was that although there would be transfers, in the long run the trip would be cheaper. Unfortunately, the Czechs fell for his sales pitch.

It is not known at this time how the group traveled from Hamburg to Liverpool. The name of the ship, the number of passengers, their names, and the ,dates of sailing and arrival are unknown.

The Czech group left Liverpool for New Orleans on December 1, 1851 on the sailing vessel MARIA. There is an official list which was compiled in Liverpool of the people who sailed on the MARIA on that trip. This passenger list can be found in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. It contains the names of 74 Czechs with surnames as follows : Coufal, Jezek, Leg ikar, Mares, Motl, Rosier, Rypl, §ilar, SzornovskY, and Votava.

Thirty-one of the 74 . names listed were of the surname Silar (Shiller). A list of the Czechs given on the MARIA passenger list as the group left Liverpool is given in Appendix 1. (It has been - published in the Vestnik issue dated Feb. 14, page 22. Editor.)

were from Dolnich Hef manic, Cechy, but they may have been descendants of Sudeten Germans.)

The MARIA was built in Quebec, Canada, in 1849 of oak, hackmatock, and pine wood. She was of 1014 tons register or 837 tons net. She had one main deck and a poop deck, and was 150 feet long, 32 feet wide, and 22 feet in depth. As the MARIA left Liverpool, there were about 295 passengers on board. Besides the Czechs, there were German and Irish people coming to America. This made the living conditions rather congested. The food was scarce and of inferior quality.

Much of it was raw. As a result of the poor living conditions, most of the passengers became ill and many died.

The number of deaths, however, is not known.

About 63 days after departing from Liverpool, the MARIA reached New Orleans on February 3, 1852. It is believed that many of the Czechs who had become ill entered a hospital in New Orleans, and it is very likely that some of them passed away in that city.

Unfortunately, no New Orleans records concerning this group have been found.

After staying in New Orleans for an unknown length • of time, the surviving Czechs left for Galveston on a ship which may have been the VICTORIA. This has not been verified, but the VICTORIA was referred to by descendants. The names of the actual passengers and the dates of departure from New Orleans and arrival in Galveston are not known. Family records of some of the families indicate that some of the Czechs died on the voyage from New Orleans to Galveston, as well as in Galveston after their arrival.

From Galveston the surviving Czechs went to Houston via Buffalo Bayou on a schooner. Additional Czechs died in Houston according to some records.

The journey from Houston to the Cat Spring area in Austin County was made mostly on foot. There were no railroads along that route at that time.

Some of the heavier possessions and a few of the individuals were transported by ox-drawn wagons. It is known that one child, surname Rypl, died on this part of the journey at a point near the Brazos River.
