Box 100, Temple, Texas 76501 OCTOBER 3, 1979 USPS e 658480 VOLUME 67 NUMBER 40 There was a time in this editor's life when some slap-stick, pie throwing comedy was some diversion from the everyday run of life and the duties of each day, however, as time has gone on, the more serious aspects of life become more interesting and quite necessarily, more absorbing and a person in a responsible position, more or less, feels more compelled to face the serious issues that face our world, our country, our state, our Society and very frankly, all of us in a certain way and in such a way that we all are faced with rather serious decisions to make for the benefit of our future and, especially, the future of our children and, generations to come.

Here we are on the threshold of a presidential election in one year from now and some of the issues are rather clouded and obscured by the rhetoric we hear on our radio and see and hear on our TV and read in our newspapers and all three forms of media have a powerful impact on our lives. The average person has to have a good hold on their mental capacity to sensibly judge the merits of the arguments and positions taken and stated by the many various personalities speaking and writing their views and, therefore, it behooves each of us, personally, to ev-duate what is said or ten very carefully before making a personal decision too hastily. A good friend of mine has a good example of hasty decision making - he said he saw a cockroach running across the floor of their den. He picked up a $2 china plate from the table to throw down upon the insect and not only broke the plate, but also missed the cockroach; he said that his quick decision was a lost cause all around from the beginning. Of course, from this humorous standpoint, do we

*** Many of our readers will most assuredly remember that, during Westfest, Saturday and Sunday, September 1st and 2nd we had the Sokol gymnasts perform for us both days and, at that time, we announced that there will be an

attempt made to form a Sokol unit here in West. Mr. Jack McClure, Mr. Jerry Milan and Mr. Larry Laznovsky and Ms. Sylvia Laznovsky were all introduced at that time We have just been informed by Mr. Jack McClure of Dallas, that a special meeting will be called for the purpose to organize a Sokol unit in West on Sunday, October 7th at the West Fraternal Auditorium on 1-35 near West, Texas, beginning at 7:30 p.m. All interested parties are welcome to attend.

Mr. McClure will be on hand to answer your questions concerning the gymanstic organization.

delegates to the convention. I will be forwarding this information to each local lodge secretary during the first week of October. Leonard Mikeska (SecretaryTreasurer) will also forward the required forms in reporting the qualified delegates to the Home Office.

Indications are that the number of delegates will be the largest ever. My computations show that the lodges will be entitled to a total representation of 375 delegates as compared to 339 delegates at our last convention.

Please refer to Articles 4 through 6 of our 1976 By-laws pertaining to qualifications and procedure in electing delegates and substitutes.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: All of you have responded in the affirmative about the proposed merger after your individual lodge meetings. It has now been mutually agreed that the joint meeting of all four lodges be held on Sunday, October 7th at 3 p.m. at Lodge No. 17, New Tabor.

The purpose of this meeting is: 1) Determine whether two or more of the lodges wish to merge, and 2) if they do, determine the new lodge's number and name, and 3) if the merger is effected, elect officers of the new lodge, and 4) the new lodge should set the meeting date and place of their next meeting.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Members: Sister Cheri Petr led the members in the pledge of allegiance last Monday at our monthly meeting. Afterward the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

A report was given by the Sunshine Committee. Get well cards were sent to Sister Joann Pokladnik, Sister Annie Zapalac, Brother Randy Petr, Sister Dorothy Prasifka and Brother David Reznik.

Sister Prasifka, who usually is at the meetings, was missed but the report given by Brother Charlie over the phone was very good and we are happy about that.

Our successful Czechfest is but a dream of the past. Report was given by Brother Joe Ondrusek of the various booths and those present at the meeting enjoyed hearing them; all were good. To the many, many members who donated and brought items, pastry or bought the tickets for this occasion, those who worked or brought some one along for dinner, prepared by the Kitchen Committee, or the music on the stage or if you came to have fun and spend money and time among fraternal brothers and sisters, then all share in the success of this day. One such couple enjoying it all was Brother and Sister John Slovak who came to celebrate on this day; married 60 years and members of this lodge for the same. Both of them looked great! Lodge

No. 84 wishes them many more years together among us.

Sister Bessie Petr displayed the first place trophy won by Lodge No. 84 Beseda dancers. at State YAD. Congratulations!

By the way, orchestra practice will be October 4th and dancers for the State Fair of Texas Czech Day October 14th, should be at this lodge to practice with the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra around 7:30 p.m.

Do not forget October 6th, that's the night of the Czech Harvesters who will be here to play for your dancing pleasure, from 8:30 to 12:30.

LODGE NO. 133, SAN ANTONIO

Dear Members and Friends: Our District VII fall meeting which was held in San Antonio September 16th, was a very interesting meeting and we do hope that all of the local members and the many sisters and brothers from out-of-town enjoyed themselves and that their trip home was enjoyable. The host Lodge No. 133 wishes to thank everyone for coming and also that we all get to-gether sometime in the spring in the beautiful City of Corpus Christi.

Dinner was served at 11 a.m. and everyone was finished by 12:30 p.m. The regular District VII meeting began at 1 p.m. We want to especially thank Brother Jerry Mikulas and his family for coming out. They also were on their way to Round Rock after leaving San Antonio. I am sure that the day was a very long one for all of them. We wish to thank Sister Henrietta Kalmus and Sister Marcella Kleprlik for taking the responsibility for the fine dinner: Sister Kleprlik for making and donating the kolaches and Sister Kalmus for the sandwiches; also, to others who helped in any way to make this meeting a success.

This is what fraternalism is all about. It

is indeed a pleasure to see people work together with such a tine fraternal spirit.

Yes, we all agree that sometimes it does go into ,a lot of work; but after it is all done, it is so rewarding to just sit down and say to yourself by all of us working together: we accomplished what we wanted to, another job well done.

Although Brother Kleprlik is still unable to get around too well, he did come to the meeting and helped at the registration' table and he enjoyed it very much.

LODGE NO. 80, HOLLAND

Dear Members and Friends: It has been an unusual year because it stayed cold until late in the spring. We had lots of rain in our area, but it has been a pleasant summer. The temperature did not make the 100-degree mark at my place during the entire summer. The grass in the pasture stayed nice and green all summer long.

Lots of hay was put up and the quality is very good. The milo crop was average, it could have been better, but due to the excessive moisture, the yield was reduced. Most of the cotton in our area

is very good. It is beginning to be defoliated to get ready for the strippers.

We held our regular monthly meeting Sunday, September 9th, at 2 p.m.

President Ricky Benner called the meeting to order. The pledge of allegiance was recited by all the members present.

Roll call of officers showed all of them were present.

The minutes from the August meeting were read by the secretary of the lodge, and they were adopted as read.

The members present stood in silent devotion for a few moments in memory of our departed Brother Bill Williams.

New members accepted to our lodge are Betty Davis and Gene Proctor.

A motion was made and seconded that we donate $10 to the March of Dimes.

The bar, kitchen and dance committees gave good reports for the month of August, 1979.

Lucky winner of the door prizes were: I st--Jack Zschieschie, 2nd--Mary Barabas, 3rd--Terry Bertrand.

Meeting adjourned at 3 p.m . and a happy hour followed.

Dear Members and Friends: We will not have a meeting in October because of the Strand Street Festival '79 in Galveston, and District V fall meeting, which will be held in Danbury, Texas.

Our next meeting will be held November 4th at 3:30 p.m. at 407 Ling, Bayou Vista. We need all of you members to attend the meeting. There are several lodge matters that need to be discussed and worked out. The officers cannot do it alone, nor can they speak for you to express your opinions to make the decisions that need to be worked out. The more opinions and discussion of the matters will help so it all can be worked out for the best interest of our lodge. It is not just the officers' duties but the duty of all the members.

To our fellow members and friends: We extend our invitation to come visit us and see Strand Street Festival '79 on October 6th and 7th.

Wednesday, October 3, 1979 LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA Dear Members: By the time this letter goes to press I hope we are having some nice sunny days and less wet ones. We have had some bad weather, but we can look around and see where we have been blessed.

If anyone is on the sick list, let's hope they are better. Ann Bingham is in the hospital and is doing better each day.

Hurry and get well soon, Ann, because everyone sure does miss your phone calls and your information you give about our lodge.

Members, don't forget November 11th.

We are celebrating our Veterans Day and also our lodge's 10th anniversary.

We are combining it into our Czech Fair.

Dinner will be served at 11:30 a.m., program will start at 1 p.m., and a free dance with the City Polka Boys will be from 5 to 9 p.m. We will have a country store, and Lillia Mae Peter will be ready to take anything you members have to donate for the store. We also need door prizes. The dinner tickets will be tickets for the door prizes.

Lodge 88 Choral Club and their youth Beseda dancers, the Galveston County Heritage Singers, plus different booths will give everyone a grand afternoon, so, members come out and bring your pastry because Sister Klechka will appreciate that very much. There will be more about our Fair later, but attend our meetings and you will find out how much you have been missing.

Have you been to see anyone in a rest home lately? Let us all try and visit and make someone happier, because we may be looking toward the door some day to see if someone will visit us.

LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, September 16th at the Grant Building with President Frank Zabransky presiding. The pledge to the flag was led by the youth club.

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the July and August meetings. They were approved after minor corrections.

Correspondence followed.

Youth Leader Erwin Holy gave his report. Our youth club had two first place winners at State YAD. They were Laurie Chudej and Mark Sevcik. Third place winners were Melissa Holy and Janell Chudej. Congratulations!

Treasurer Gaye Galetka gave her report.

The members were reminded of the District VI fall meeting to be held in East Bernard.

LODGE NO. 29, TAYLOR

President Edwin Adamek convened the lodge meeting Sunday, September 9th at 4 p.m. and also led the members to the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

Vice President Ronnie Rieger (in absence of our secretary, Mike Kaiser) called the roll call of officers. All officers were present, except Secretary Kaiser.

Br. Rieger also read the minutes of the previous meeting. They were approved as read.

Albin Machu gave the treasurer's report and Herbert Riethmeyer gave the Property Committee's report.

New members received were James Matthew Reeves, James Douglas Reeves and Anita Holubec.

A letter was read from the United Way of Taylor, an organization that

helps eleven agencies. A motion was made that we donate $100 to that organization.

Another motion was made that we donate $500 to the Williamson County Activity Center in Taylor.

Youth Leader Melvin Steger presented his report. He had 45 children attending the youth meeting plus two new members and four adults. At State YAD ten entries took six places. The scrapbook took first place. The members viewed the book after the meeting. It took a lot of hard work and long hours to prepare a book like this. It is fantastic. Brother Steger reported that there will be some tickets sold later so the youth club can raise some money for their organization.

President Adamek reminded everyone that at our November meeting is when we elect our delegates to the SPJST Convention in 1980.

Door prizes were won by Albin Machu, Elaine Machu and Evelyn Berryhill.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, October 14th, at 4 p.m.

Laznovsky] LODGE NO. 187, ROUND ROCK Dear Members, I apologize for it being so long since my last letter. All summer news from Lodge 187 would have been about all the work that members were doing on the building and that seemed rather monotonous so I didn't write anything. Once school started I was so busy with that during the day and more work at the lodge building at night that I just found no time to write. I'm sorry records weren't kept of he volunteer hours of work done by nembers because it would have made luite a volume.

Sunday, September 16th was a really neat day for our lodge. The dedication, Manned on for so long, went off

beautifully. I would like to say thank yoU to all who helped make it such a success.

I won't - mention any names because it would be too easy to overlook someone, but there were many who contributed much!

Irene Weidner, who was in charge of the dessert table, says: Thank you, members, for all the delicious cakes, pies, cookies, etc., you provided!

President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. Sister Patty Tydlacka led us in the pledge to the flag.

Roll call of officers revealed ten present and three absent.

Sister Olga Nimtz read the minutes from the August meeting and they were approved as read.

Sister Mildred Horak gave the treasurer's report for the past month and it showed a sizable profit for the month.

One of the main sources of income was from the Firemen's Picnic. We would like to thank everyone who helped work on that particular day because on that day all labor is donated.

The financial secretary gave her report and so did several members on committees which were to report back with information this month.

Pres. Flippin called for a moment of silence in tribute to Bro. Joe Tydlacka who passed away August 25, 1979. He

Wednesday, October 3, 1979 was a member for 39 years.

Fraternally, Lodge 84 Officers Evelyn Salac, Secretary -SPJSTLODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends: Due to the Ocktoberfest the weekend of October bth and 7th and the State Fair the following weekend, our October meeting will be on our regular meeting day, Sunday, November 11th, at 3 p.m.

Our groups will be working the Ocktoberfest.

The youth club had their meeting Sunday, September 23rd for their October meeting, which was held at the Eagle Mountain Lake followed by a lunch and swimming. Their plans were made for the annual Halloween party to be held October 31st. More details later.

Sister Maria Prill went on a 2-week vacation with her daughter, Sister Eva and husband Virgil Dockery. They went to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and then went on to Washington, D.C. They reported a wonderful time and seeing a lot of beautiful scenery.

Sister Jeanie Mason, along with two daughters, Sisters Evelyn Hopkins and Billie Jo Mason and several friends, are spending a few days in Las Vegas. I am, sure they will have a lot to talk about on

The artistic and beautiful work of the SPJST Lodge No. 79 Corpus Mme i Sokol Corpus Christi emblems was done by our own SPJST Library and Museum Curator Brother Otto Hanus of Temple. He is a member of Lodge No. 66, Waco. their return.

Brother Joe and Sister Carrie Milan were honored with a surprise party for their 35th anniversary by their daughters, Sisters Marilyn Milan and Carolyn Clevland and her husband, Bobby, and Carrie's mother, Jewel Clark. They were given a week's vacation to Mexico City and Acapulco. I know they are enjoying themselves.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Sister Mable Statch and family on the loss of her husband, Brother Stanley Statch. May he rest in eternal peace.

Dear Members: This is a reminder that the regular October meeting will be held on the 7th of 2:30 p.m. CDT. Reports from the District VI fall meeting will be given, also the successes will be mentioned as well as the many mistakes as to our part of the meeting.

Our last meeting September 2nd consisted mostly of the usual reports and the final plans for the District VI meeting.

Dear Members: Our monthly meeting was conducted by President Henry Linhart on Friday, September 7th, at 8:05 p.m. We had twenty-eight members present.

The meeting convened with the members reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag, which followed by all officers' reports.

We have two new members Dorothy Moszkowicz and Maurice Raymond Dumas, to add to our roster. They were accepted by our membership.

We are sorry to report we have three sick members: Otto Froehlich, Oliver Barrett and Monroe Koehn. We hope each one is feeling much better now.

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Brothers and Sisters: The last lodge monthly meeting was held on the second Monday, September 10th at 8 p.m. with Lodge 47 President Jerry Pechal in charge of the meeting.

Flag Bearers David Pechal and Gene Skrabanek led us in the pledge to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence in respect to the memory of our departed Brother Willie Frank Andel, 63, of the Heidenheimer community near Temple. We shall miss him, also, but the deepest sympathy is being expressed to his bereaved family.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and may we honor his memory forever.

Visitors recognized were Marylou Skrabanek and Ann Balusek. Do make plans to come to the next meeting, also.

Secretary Ginger Klusacek read the roll call of officers and sales representatives and the minutes of the previous meeting and these were approved as read.

Correspondence included the mortuary dues- from the Supreme Lodge; thank-you notes from Shana Patterson and Michael Morris for the money given them when they represented Lodge No. 47 as duchess and duke at our District II YAD; and a request from William C. Elsik regarding the Elsiks in this locality and this is being taken care of by the Supreme Lodge.

The secretary had sent get-well cards to these Brothers: Frank Maruna, Walter Haisler and Johnie L. Vanicek and the day of the meeting, my mother-in-law, Rosie Pechal, was hospitalized. Here's hoping you are all well enough to be at home recovering satisfactorily.

The Investigating Committee approved the following: Kimberly S. Burtchell, Sonja Michelle Burtchell, Ray Otis McPherson and Christi Jo Marinik and the lodge voted and accepted them as new lodge members. Welcome to the lodge and come to the meetings and other activities.

The officers' reports included President Pechal telling the members to support Lodge No. 187 "Spirit of Round Rock" Grand Opening on Sunday, September 16th. I think the group from Lodge 47

was just great; 50 members plus some 20 more whose spouses are not members.

Congratulations to the officers and members of the Round Rock lodge on their beautiful lodge home and much success is wished in the future.

The treasurer's report was given by Sister Ruby Bolton and the membership status was given by Financial Secretary Willie E. Kohutek. The chairmen all gave good reports.

The Board of Trustees' minutes were given by Vice President Frank Klinkovsky in the absence of Sister Kosarek. The lodge voted not to buy the pumps for keg beer that the hoard had approved previously.

Brother Calvin Chervenka spoke about the courses being offered by Temple Junior College in Czech Cultural Heritage and conversational Czech. I hope they will both be attended by enough students to justify the college's efforts and that of Brother Chervenka.

The president and vice president selected these members: Brothers Woodrow Marek and Frank E. Hejl, Jr. and Sister Martha Klusacek to the Salary Committee. They will present their report to the October meeting.

Youth Leader Sister Dolores Skrabanek gave her report: Seventeen members and two visitors were present. Their social for this month is a hayride Sunday, September 23rd. The youth club members will be selling Shaklee products as a fund-raising so give them your support.

The meeting had moved at a fast clip, so to prolong the proceedings, the president requested those having. birthdays to stand, there was a large number; those having wedding anniversaries were applauded, also congratulations to all celebrating this month, even those from the meeting.

The secretary read the recipients of the premium refund checks.

Door prizes were won by Sisters Annie Krcha and Della Mares. Happy hour was held afterward.

The next meeting will be held Sunday, October 7th at 2 p.m. The year is coming to a close. The Nominating Committee will be chosen in this meeting and they will investigate the eligibility of members to serve as officers for next year and also the delegates to represent our lodge for the 1980 SPJST Convention in San Antonio. The Rules and Regulations Committee will also be chosen so they can be approved in the December meeting instead of January 7th this year.

These next three meetings will all have a great bearing on the next year at Lodge No. 47; so make plans to attend this lodge meeting Sunday, October 7th, at 2 p.m. with a lunch and happ y hour to

LODGE NO. 156, BAYTOWN Dear Members: We met Monday, September 17th at 7 p.m. at Jo Ann and Jerry Vojacek's home for a steak cookout, which I think everyone enjoyed, even though it rained.

We had nineteen members and two guests present.

President Brother Jerry Vojacek opened the meeting and we all recited the pledge of allegiance.

The minutes were read and approved from the last meeting. Sister Ann Harvey gave our financial report.

Under new business we discussed having our Christmas party, that's when we will have election of new officers. We decided to have it December 9th on a Sunday afternoon, starting at 4 p.m., at Margie and Louis Hrabina's home. Each family is to bring a covered dish and each member bring a gift for exchange.

We want to welcome our newest member, Christopher John Vojacek.

I hope to see all of you at our December meeting.

LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA Dear Members and Friends: There used to be a saying around here that went something like this: "The grass is greener in Pasadena." I haven't heard it lately but everything certainly is greener around here this year. I don't know what will happen if it keeps on raining. I hope your home was not flooded. Just two months ago many homes in several places around here had several feet of water in them and this week it happened again to many of the same families. So far our street did have high water and we are thankful for that.

It was nice to have such a nice attendance at our last two meetings.

Don't forget that we meet every second Wednesday of the month.

We were sorry to hear that Brother Pete Willis had an accident on his job by a hard fall and will be in a brace for a while. Another member, Sister Ann Bingham, had major surgery and will be hospitalized again. We wish all of you a speedy recovery.

It was nice to have Marcia Martin hack with us after her illness.

Wednesday, October 3, 1379 on the plans for our new hall. Those of you who had the experience of building a new lodge hall know how much time and work goes into it. If you have ideas and advice to give us, please don't hold back. Now is the time to consider those ideas and to talk about them.

Also keep in mind the date of our Czech Fair which is coming up on November 11th. That will be our 10th anniversary celebration with festivities from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Look for further details in the Vestnik.

Our youth club will be getting started again. Members, please bring all the youngsters with you when you come to the meeting. Encourage them to bring their friends even if they are not members. They may decide to become members.

If laughter is the best medicine, let's try to laugh more often.

LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 66, Waco held its meeting Sunday, September 16th with President Henry West conducting the meeting.

The flags were presented by Larry Brem and James Yates. The members recited the pledge of allegiance and lodge motto.

All lodge officers were present except Czech reporter, Brother Otto Hanus and guide, Brother George Pauling.

Recording secretary, Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the August minutes. They were approved as read.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held Monday night, September 10th due to the absence of Brother George Pauling who was out of town due to a death in the family. The Board of Trustees decided, at their meeting, to donate $50 to the Cen-tex Zoo, and $50 to the Muscular Dystrophy.

Sister Libbie Parma gave the youth club report. The club went to Six Flags Saturday, September 15th. It seems they really had a good time and the weather seemed to be perfect. Sister Parma said that State Royalty will be hosted by Lodge No. 180 in Burleson Saturday, September 29th. Sister Parma had the beautiful trophy won by Tena Urbanek, Karen Shelton and Steven Stanislav in group talent at the State YAD held at Temple recently; also, a plaque won by the club for being in the top ten lodges.

Congratulations to them and the other youngsters who won places in arts,

crafts, talents, etc. We are proud of you!

Sister Parma also reminded us that the District III fall meeting will be hosted by Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Sunday, October 7th.

Sister Sue Pauling reported for the Entertainment Committee. She said that following the meeting chili dogs and all the trimmings will be served. For the October meeting, chips, popcorn and cold beverages will be served. Sister Pauling thanked Sisters Bonnie Pruitt for reading the Board of Trustees' minutes and Brother Emil Hanus who registered the members for Brother George Pauling.

The Rules and Regulations Committee consisting of Brothers Ed Mazanec, Tim Urbanek, Otto Hanus and Johnnie Gaidusek read the changes made in the local lodge rules and regulations. These were discussed, then were accepted or rejected by voting. These will be written up and read again in order that everyone understands them before being printed in booklets.

New members accepted to Lodge 66 were Kerrie Annette Niemeyer and Joel Cole Chandler. Welcome to Lodge 66!

There was no Health Committee report, but we heard that Brother Louis Macha had been in the hospital for tests, but is doing OK; also, Randall Sanders, Sister Pruitt's son-in-law, is now home and doing fine. We all wish him the best and that he will be OK soon. Good luck, Randy!

We send our belated get-well wishes to Sister Jeanette Smith who was in the hospital for surgery recently. She is doing OK. Good luck, Sister Jeanette! Also, Sister Anita Mazanec was in the hospital for surgery. She is at home looking fine.

We, at Lodge 66, do wish to send our deepest sympathy to Sister Evelyn Pavelka and Brother Louis Cepak, on the recent loss of their father. May he rest in eternal peace.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: We had the American Sunrise at the lodge Saturday night to provide us with great music to dance and listen to.

Everyone really enjoyed them.

I want to remind everyone that effective October 1st, the youth admission will be $2.50 per person.

We would like each of you to remember the Lodge 74 Youth Club will be having a garage sale October 13th at the Davy Crockett Park Pavilion. If anyone has any articles they would like to donate to the youth for their garage sale, please contact Elaine Erwin at 544-7510 or Charlene Bennett at 544-7708. They will arrange for these items to be picked up for you. This garage sale is for the youth to raise money for a new dance floor in the mother lodge; therefore, all help and contributions will be greatly appreciated.

Brother Les Wiesner resigned the presidency in order to accept a new position with his company overseas. He and his wife will be stationed in Germany for approximately one year. The City of Houston was the lucky recipient of recording secretary Jutta Mozingo, when she was transferred by her employer. We would like to take this opportunity to say that the hearts of everyone at Lodge No. 178 go with them, and we wish them every happiness and success in their new surroundings.

The September monthly meeting was called to order by Val Steele, lodge president. Everyone recited the pledge of allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed brothers and sisters.

The minutes were read and corrected.

Reports were heard by all lodge officers and committee chairmen.

Preparations were underway for the dance which was held Thursday, September 27th by Mickey Gilley.

Advance tickets were purchased.

Much of our unfinished business was focussed on the plans already underway for the barbecue planned to take place Saturday, October 20th at 11 a.m.

Meeting was then adjourned.

After the meeting refreshments were served while members enjoyed a moment of relaxation.

Dear Readers: Our September meeting was called to order by President Edwin Marek.

Members recited the pledge of allegiance and stood for a moment of silence in honor of our departed members.

Secretary Nelda Marek read the minutes and they were approved. It is good to hear that Craig Waits is at home and doing better. Mrs. Hensel is now in a nursing home.

Board of Trustees' report was given

by LaVerne Cabla and it was discussed with the members.

There was more discussion on the paving of the parking lot and of the selling of keg beer to the wedding party.

Brother Dan Hoelscher was elected bar chairman once again; Dan has been doing a fine job as chairman and we, as members, want to thank you for accepting the job.

We decided we will have our Christmas party Sunday, December 16th. More will be decided later.

The monthly reports were given by the committee chairmen and discussed.

The members decided to have someone as security outside on the parking lot during lodge activities to keep an eye on things.

Congratulations to Kelli Andel for winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd places at State YAD, also Keith Andel for 2nd place at State. We are proud of Kelli and Keith for their efforts.

The meeting was then adjourned and premium refund checks were handed out.

Our next meeting will be held Tuesday, October 9th at 8 p.m.; the meeting had to be moved up one day.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON

The Knights of Dixie played for us Saturday, September 22nd. At first it seemed there would be a very slim crowd but, by 10 o'clock, the Chandelier Ballroom filled very nicely and the attendance was satisfactory. The Knights of Dixie always bring them in. The Hosting Committee in charge of the night were Homer Alexander and Orville Crossman (in the box office). Rita Alexander, Frances Crossman and June Surrett were at the door. Entertainment first vice and second vice chairmen were present to help with the arriving guests.

Sister Lola Buekner had a special smile on her face at the Thursday Social Night and for a good reason too. The long-awaited new arrival joined the Buekner family circle September 18, 1979. Grandson Darrell Ross weighing 8 lbs. and 15 ozs., was born in Memorial City Hospital to Ronald and Donna Buekner who live in Waller, Texas; they

have a son Joel, age 4, who welcomed his little brother with pride. Grandparents John and Lola Buekner also have -a daughter, Martha, married to George Francis, and their son is five years old, named Joey. This makes three grandsons for John and Lola. I have a sneaky suspicion, that Lola was expecting a granddaughter, but I am sure little Darrell will make up for it.

Congratulations!

Sister Agnes Lesak with daughter, Linda Rivers, attended the Lesak family reunion September 9th in Ganado, Texas. Next day Monday, September 10th, they left and drove to Louisiana where Agnes spent eight days in company of Linda. In Natchitoches there was a lot to see and Agnes enjoyed the Hodges Gardens the most. Then on to Alexandria for a few days to dash around and also enjoyed some dancing. From there Agnes boarded a plane and flew to Houston. Before she had time to settle down, the plane was landing in Houston.

Agnes is our lodge sales representative and after such a nice week, she will be ready to go to work and bring in the members.

After the Saturday, September 22nd dance, Karl and Arnel Hassebrock had several friends over at their beautiful and cozy home for a midnight breakfast in honor of Karl's birthday on September 26th. Karl did not reveal any special number of years, but whatever he looks great. Everyone enjoyed the wonderful hospitality and the delicious food. To top it off, the homebaked bread took the prize. Karl claimed that he baked the bread that morning and it was served hot with sweet butter. Nothing beats that!

You deserve a medal. It was wonderful and we wish you many, many more happy birthdays.

Sunday, September 23rd, a beautiful wedding took place of two lovely people, Gary Zalesky and Myriam Josett were united in Holy Matrimony in the Brethren Church with many friends and family present. Gary is the son of A.J. and Elsie Zalesky. Myriam is the daughter of Vaughn and Colett Matthews. The bride, dressed in a traditional wedding gown, walked down the aisle on her father's arm to the groom waiting at the altar with his best man, Larry Kokomore and three groomsmen, Pat Perrin, Richard Engelbrecht and Robert Urmis; all the men in the wedding party were dressed in brown tuxedos and peach ruffled shirts.The pretty ladies in the wedding party wore peach chiffon gowns with hair dress to match. It was very becoming. The maid of honor was Suyette Perrin. Bridesmaids were Dorrie Leitko, Brenda Hilliard and Pat Wury. The bride's

Wednesday, October 3, 1979 mother wore a gown of white chiffon over pale blue. The groom's mother wore a lavender chiffon gown. After the ceremony the reception was held in the Chandelier Ballroom at Lodge 88.

Refreshments were served all through the evening. After the delicious buffet dinner catered by the famous Mikeska Catering of Columbus, Texas, the beautifully arranged table for the wedding party, the table with the three-tiered wedding cake and coffee and punch table, were all done by Rene Walker and her mother, Patsy Walker.

They are in the catering service and this was their first time and they did a wonderful job. To the two newlyweds: We wish a long lasting marriage.

I would like to make some corrections and apologize for few of my mistakes. I called Edna Froelich "Rita" which was wrong. Then I quoted the 10th wedding anniversary for Sig and Stella Ellerman, which should have been more because they have a lot older children than that.

Leander and Josephine Pflughaupt are married 37 years, not nine. I beg for your patience and forgiveness.

Put your dancing shoes on for Saturday, October 6th for the John Sullivan 16-piece orchestra; that is this Saturday!

BIRTHDAY CLUB SISTERS OF LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The regular monthly meeting was called to order by president, Sister Shirley High Wednesday, September 12th, at 11:30 a. m.

Sister Rosalee Kostom, secretary, read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were accepted as read.

Treasurer Sister Lillie Spies gave a complete report of finances.

Sister Pearl Hanka reported that our dear Sister Ida Hanka is in the.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Honie No. 2 in Needville and she is doing fine. Sister Hanka is enjoying the company of all the other sisters and brothers who are in the home.

You know that Sister Ida Hanka loves everybody.

The September luncheons were very good. Many thanks to the hostesses: Sisters Louise Cordes, Patsy Baca, Mary Ehret (cooking for Sister Mary Kosut), and Agnes Lesak (cooked first Wednesday) and Sister Bessie Dewer cooked for Sister Agnes Lesak on the second Wednesday.

Sister Birdie Hilsher announced the

13 annual Heights Festival which will be October 6th and 7th. The Birthday Club Sisters will have a pastry booth of kolaches, pies, cakes, candy and cookies Sunday, October 7th from 1 to 6 p.m. in front of Sister Hilsher's home at 1215 Heights Blvd. Sisters, we need your support so please make us some pastry of something for that day. If you bring it to Lodge No. 88, Sisters Edna Froelich and Rita Alexander will pick up the pastry by 12 noon Sunday. The community will benefit and so will the Birthday Club.

Many thanks to the sisters who brought pastry Sunday, September 16th when the English play, "The Eager Miss Beaver" was performed. The sisters were Mary Tilich, Silvia Melia, Birdie Hilsher, Ruby Cernosek, Anne Elzner, Georgia Barcak, Tillie Bily, Mary Johnson, Tillie Fridel, Florine Taake, Sophie Hampel and Evelyn Mikolas. Congratulations to our good friend and brother, our District V Director Louis Hanus who had just retired from Sunbeam Bread after 45 years. Sunbeam will miss Brother Hanus but he deserves some recreation and some leisure time Brother Hanus is so good at whatever he does and we wish him further health and happiness.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sister Tillie Bily, Pearl Hanka and Birdie Hilsher. All three of the birthday sisters were present; that is so nice and we wish you many more happy birthdays.

Fraternally, Lillian Finn Reporter - SPJST CZECH DAY AT DALLAS FAIR IS DUE TO BE EXCITEMENT A-PLENTY The American Czech Culture Society wishes to announce that the 39th American Czech Day this year will be at State Fair of Texas in Dallas October 14th and extends the cordial invitation "to all those of Czech descent and many friends who admire our heritage to attend this day and make it one of the best Czech Days." To those of you who are familiar with the facilities of the fair grounds, the program will be similar to those in the past years. Same as last year, Roman Catholic Mass will be

celebrated in Czech starting 9:00 a.m. in downstairs auditorium of Hall of State by Most Rev. John Morkovsky, Bishop Galveston-Houston.

Hopefully starting about 9:00 a.m., in the Band Shell, coffee and good kolaches will be served. To reach the Band Shell follow the street by the duck pond from the Big Tex, and also it is located at the corner of Forest and Second Avenues. Here in the Band Shell the main program of our day will be held and will start at 10:30 a.m. and will last all day till six o'clock in the evening. Also in the Band Shell, good food and refreshments will be available from noon on.

His Honor Robert Folsom, mayor of Dallas, will address our gathering.

There will be folk dancing, singing and good music for the well-known Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Br. Sid Pokladnik.

Merriment will continue in the Band Shell in the afternoon; there will be accordions playing and starting at 4:00 p.m. the very fine orchestra of Czech Harvesters will play for your enjoyment and dancing.

There, also, will be a program in the Women's Building from 12 noon until 1:00 p.m., Sokol exhibition in the front of the Hall of State from 2:30 to 3:30 and on Big Tex stage from 3:30 to 4:30. All these last three are mostly for general audience and in the past were well-received. And even souvenirs will be available and please wear your costume (kroj) if you have one.

It's catching on again, even among dentists, lawyers, doctors and other professionals who are bartering for food, gardening services, leisure equipment, ads and other products, she says.

IDEAS TO WATCH FOR With bartering, families can get living essentials without using their limited money.

They can trade time, skills, products and services.

Some include mechanical, sewing, needlework or shopping skills.

Swapping can be among friends, families or even within the same family.

For example, in your own family, trade babysitting services for sewing skills.

Energy savings are possible with bartering, too.

Carpool with someone, or exchange "taxi" services for some other service with someone who cannot share in children's transportation duties.

Bartering works for gift giving, too.

Give housecleaning for one month or a dinner or child care.

Mrs. Mark Edward Schroeder CHERYL LYNN VOLDAN BECOMES MRS. SCHROEDER On Saturday, July 14th, 1979 at 1 o'clock, the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Houston was a lovely scene for the wedding of Cheryl Lynn Voldan and Mark Edward Schroeder, both of Cy Fair.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pat K. Lewis and Daniel Voldan.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs.

Charles L. Schroeder.

After a reception, supper and dance at Camwood Country Club, the couple left for a short honeymoon.

They will make their home in Houston, where both are employed. Mr. Schroeder is a 1977 graduate and Mrs. Schroeder is a 1978 graduate, both of Cy Fair High School near Houston. (p)

Legal snarls can result if traders aren't careful, such as with bartering homes or vacation cottages.

The owner's insurance coverage may not apply, and in some of these cases liability suits can arise.

Also, you can "barter friends away" if you're not careful.

Since guarantees or warranties don't apply, barterers only have personal integrity to rely on.

Finally, be sure to discuss values of products or services before you actually trade them.

Any barter should satisfy both parties.

COUPLE IS ENGAGED Mr. and Mrs. Noel Kennedy officially announced the engagement of their daughter, Jode Jean Elzner to Mr. Ronnie M. Bennett at a party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Don Bartulla on August 18th. The groom-to-be is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Bennett of Houston. He is a 1975 graduate of Waltrip Senior High School and is employed as an electrician for Power Con Electrical Systems. Jode is a 1977 graduate of Waltrip High and a 1979 honor graduate of the University of Texas Dental Hygiene School. She is now employed by Drs. Hill and Wender, as a registered hygienist.

The couple was given a toast of good wishes by fathers, grandfathers and some fifty guests. Everyone enjoyed the delicious food and drinks served on two beautifully decorated tables.

Jode and Ronnie plan a May 9th evening wedding at the River Oaks Baptist Church with Brother Roy Ladd officiating. Ronnie and Jode are both members of Lodge No. 88 in Houston, along with her parents and grandparents. (p)

Business included the planning of a Six Flags trip on October 7th. We will meet at the hall at 8:45 a.m., and a Halloween party will be held on Sunday, October 28th, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the lodge. Your guests are always welcome.

We expect to have a spooky time.

It was decided to present a play at the club's annual Christmas party. Scripts will be distributed at our October meeting and rehearsal will begin.

A donation of $25 was sent to the Muscular Dystrophy Association as a charity project.

The youngsters are having a garage sale October 13 at the Davy Crockett Park Pavilion. LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Readers: The youth club meeting was held September 15th with good attendance.

A special treat was presented, it was a beautiful movie, "Ghost Squadron"

by Col. Virgil E. Hutchens of the Confederate Air Force. This squadron is based in Harlingen, Texas. They collect, restore, and preserve magnificent aircraft which are of those fast receding years of World War II. The Confederate Air Force has a resc Dnsibility to protect these precious relics of the war which changed our world forever. The Confederate Air Force was chartered as a non-profit Texas corporation on September 6th, 1961. In 1963 the collection of American WWII fighters was complete. In 1970 the CAF had established itself in a flight and museum facility in Harlingen, with local chapters in other parts of the nation. One may see flying, wherever CAF performs, the following aircrafts: P-40 Warhawk, F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, P-38 Lightning, P-63 Kingcobra, P-51 Mustang, F4U Corsair, F-82 Twin Mustang, MK-35 Mosquito, B-17 Fortress, etc. The youth clubbers enjoyed the film and are now hoping that they can go next year (October) to see this CAF performance which lasts three days.

September 16th several adults and youth club members attended the District VII fall meeting. District VII youth members enjoyed an outing to the San Antonio River and Tower of Americas.

September 22nd, twenty-eight adults and youth clubbers attended "Star Wars" concert which was held at the Bayfront Plaza Auditorium. Laserium Light show and special effects were by Laser Display, Inc. of Boston, Massachusetts. The Laser Displays put on the show during the Corpus Christi Symphony, first concert of the season, a show that featured music from the films "Star Wars," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Jesus Christ Superstar, 2001 • "A Space Odyssey", also l'Sprach Zarathustra" 2001: Odyssey "Beautiful Blue Danube", "The Firebird," "Star Trek," and "Venus" from the Planets.

The light show, one of several that runs across the country, is a relatively new concept. Two laser beams were used, which cost $12,000 each. Laser light shows are beginning to be used at discos to help boggle the minds of dancers.

Bayfest "79 had opened on September 28th, 29th and 30th. The youth club planned going on September 29th.

Shriners Circus is coming to town to the Memorial Coliseum and the youth clubbers will be going October 7th at 1 p.m.

September 22nd officers met and had a "Haunted House" planning session.

The officers will be meeting every Sunday to plan this project. The "Haunted House" is enjoyed by young and old. It will be held October 28th at Youth Center. More details later.

There are many planned functions, such as museum trip, cerebral palsy walkathon, bowling, Christmas Pageant, caroling at Retama Nursing Home, charity projects and many, many other activities; too many to mention.

Birthday celebrants for September are: Frances McDonald, Denise Engle and David Kuenneke.

Dear Readers, September 15th, the youth club held its regular monthly meeting.

A representative of the Confederate Air Force showed all present a film called, "Ghost Squadron." This film showed how the Confederate Air Force was started and the many different planes they have acquired. It was a real interesting film and I would like to see the museum and air show that is held each year in Harlingen, Texas.

I attended the District VII fall meeting and want to thank Mrs. Pavliska for

taking all the youth who attended on an outing which included a boatride among the river.

The SPJST Lodge 50 El Campo Youth Club held their meeting at the American Legion Auxiliary on September 17th.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Brenda Ermis. We talked about our Halloween party. Door prizes were won by Lori Henderson and Janet Ermis. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Henderson.

We had a successful skating party Sunday, September 23rd, at the Skate-Bowl in Temple. We went skating for two hours and then we went to eat tipper at Dairy Queen in Taylor. We were glad that so many visitors could attend with us.

LYDIA MATILDA DRGAC, who passed away Sunday, September 9, 1979 in the Leisure Lodge Nursing Home in Caldwell, Texas.

Sister Drgac was born February 17, 1888 in Nelsonville, Texas to Joseph 0. and Matilda Schiller. She moved to Caldwell at an early age. She was married to Frank B. Drgac in Caldwell on October 9, 1906. She was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church and a charter member of the Christian Sisters.

She is survived by two sons, Franklin Drgac of Cameron and Colbert Drgac of Caldwell; two daughters, Mrs. John (Doris) Grabow of Brenham and Mrs. Robert (Geraldine) Siptak of Caldwell; one brother, Alvin L. Schiller, Sr. of Bryan; one sister, Mrs. Gardena Mills of Austin and seven grandchildren.

Her husband preceded her in death March 14, 1968. Also, preceding her in death were four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held September 11 in the Phillips-Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.

To the loved ones and to our beloved sister, we wish eternal rest and may her memory be honored unto eternity.

ITEMS OF INTEREST CONSUMER IDEAS TO INFLUENCE FOOD LABELS Food-labeling ideas from consumers will influence future labels, says Marilyn Haggard, a foods and nutrition specialist.

For a "sneak preview" of what they might include, a look at recent consumer comments gives the best clues, she says.

Miss Haggard is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A and M University System.

These recent consumer opinions also point up questions about the most effective ways to label foods, the specialist notes.

More than 10.000 consumers across the country recently expressed their ideas on food labeling -- through written comments, hearings and nationwide surveys.

Three U.S. government agencies did

the asking -- the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Federal Trade Commission and the Food and Drug Administration.

Consumers said they're concerned about sodium (salt) and sweetener content of foods, mandatory open dating and nutrition labeling.

Also, food fortification, identification standards and imitation foods.

"Full-ingredient" information was the major concern of those responding.

Consumers either want ingredients listed in descending order of predominance or they want percentage labeling of major ingredients or all ingredients.

Some felt that current regulations make it difficult for them to know the content of processed foods, because new processing techniques and new ingredients cause confusion.

People with special diets -- or diet-related health problems -- report difficulty finding or identifying foods that have ingredients of special concern, particularly ingredients that manufacturers can add without listing them on the label.

These recent opinions also raise questions about how to include information consumers want on food labels, Miss Haggard says.

Although many consumers consider full and uniform information about all ingredients "a must," they have different ideas about expressing ingredients and amounts.

Some prefer graphs, and some prefer percentages.

On the other hand, manufacturers and processors face special problems, too, Miss Haggard says.

Ingredients they use may vary.

For example, the type of vegetable oil or fat in a product may depend on the costs of fat at the time -- in some cases.

Also, fat-to-lean content of meats can vary from animal to animal -- as does the protein content of wheat flour. ' Making labels reflect all of this fairly is a major concern, too, the specialist says.

FOOD COST FORECAST -- FALL 79 "Good buys" in food will await Texas shoppers this fall, says Marilyn Haggard, a foods and nutrition specialist.

Several "price drops" and supply increases are responsible, she explains.

Miss Haggard is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A and M University System.

PORK-- shows promise throughout the fall since prices fell six percent in June and supplies are 16-18 percent over August 1978 levels.

20 BEEF-- likely will remain stable due to slower economy, although earlier forecasts promised higher prices.

CHICKEN-- saw a 16-percent drop in prices last June, and prices should stay very favorable due to a 10-11 percent Supply increase over August 1978. :TURKEY-- prices should also be rosey for the fall. .EGGS-- prices will depend on meat prices.

Lower meat prices should result in a lesser demand for eggs -- so steady or lower egg prices are in the forecast. :FISH-- prices vary greatly from species to species, so compare cost per serving for the best buys.

MILK-- and milk products will require careful shopping for "specials," since prices generally rise in the fall due to the seasonal decline in production.

-FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES-- are generally at their best quality and lowest prices in late summer and early fall.

Look for plentiful supplies of peaches, grapes and pears.

Fresh limes are a better buy than lemons -- the Florida lemon crop is 26 percent below last year.

Also, expect fall "specials" on citrus juices. jtaisin prices should drop in November as growers recover from a dismal 1978 crop, Miss Haggard says. Forecasters predict a 15 percent increase above last year's raisin crop.

LIFE-CYCLE COSTS Learn the life-cycle costs of a product to help save money over the life of that product, suggests Claudia Kerbel, a consumer information specialist.

Even if a product -- car, appliance or other long-lasting consumer good -- costs more in the beginning, it may prove economical in the long-run, she points out.

Ms. Kerbel is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A and M University System.

Study these factors to determine the total life-cycle costs of a product: 1 ) Determine the price of the product. 2 ) Establish the operating cost. Energyefficient appliances and cars will have lower operating costs. 3 ) Determine an installation cost. 4 ) Consider repair costs. Carefully read product warranties to find what they will and will not cover.

Compare warranties to get the most coverage for your money.

5) Consider the number of years you expect to own the product. 6) Determine how much you expect to use the, product.

When using the life-cycle cost approach to buying products, you may need to make some trade-offs, Ms. Kerbel continues. for example, if you are considering the purchase of an item that you will use infrequently or that you will not keep very long, you may decide to go with the lowest initial price.

However, for products that you will use frequently, you may decide that an energy-efficient model which costs a little more initially, will be the best buy, the specialist adds.

WASHABLE SUEDE- THE 'REAL THING' Today's machine-washable suede leather brings the "real thing" back to the fashion scene in easy-care form at reasonable prices, says a clothing specialist.

In fact, it's often lower priced than synthetic suedes, says Beverly Rhoades with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A and M University System.

New washable suedes are actually soft, pliable lambskins.

They come in several colors including camel, gray, blue, brown and tan.

STYLING Styling is somewhat limited with washable suedes, since lambskins are small.

For example, in jackets, consider using princess lines, because the small pattern pieces will fit the small pieces of suede better.

Also, remember that you can make pants only if you add a decorative seam at the knee -- to cover the "splice" of suede pieces, since lambskins are not long enough to make a continuous pant leg.

HOW TO BUY When buying skins, take the pattern with you for a trial layout so you'll know how many skins to buy.

PLACING PATTERN In laying the pattern on the skins, use the lengthwise "grain" for major pattern pieces.

"Grain" on the skin runs parallel with the animal's backbone.

For the best results, place the top of the pattern piece at the neck section of the hide. Be sure all pieces - run the same direction.

SEWING SUEDE To sew washable suede, you need no special equipment.

Use all-purpose cotton-covered polyester thread, long-staple polyester or cotton thread.

Use a sharp or universal, medium-sized needle (size 11 or metric size 75-80).

Set the machine at 8-12 stitches per inch, and adjust the thread tension and presser-foot pressure as needed for a balanced, smooth stitch.

You might need to loosen top-thread tension a bit and reduce the presser-foot pressure slightly.

Sew with traditional "leather" techniques or use conventional methods.

Sew seams with right sides together and finger press them open.

Glue the seam allowances open with rubber cement and pound them lightly with a smooth-surface mallet.

For a conventional seam, lap suede "wrong side to right side" at the seam line and topstitch at the seamline and again one-fourth inch away -- for the tailored look of a mock flat felled-seam.

After topstitching, trim the seam allowances. Edges will not ravel.

When you sew suede, tie the ends of seams rather than backstitching which tends to weaken the seam.
