From The Editor . State YAD (Youth Achievement Day) in our SPJST Society in Beseda, Arts, Crafts and Talent, etc., was held Sunday, August 26th at Temple in the Temple High School Auditorium and was the scene of a gathering of a large number of our youth, parents and members. It is always refreshing to see such a large amount of support by our adults of our youthful members and encourage them in their endeavors to attain more accomplishments with their lives especially in, these, their formative years.

To your editor, a day such as this is something to watch with interest and to be proud of what our Society, lodges, and members are doing to help make our youth become better citizens of our state and country. What a relief to spend an afternoon seeing our youth perform and compete in good, wholesome and constructive competition with good sportsmanship in a fraternal atmosphere! What a difference such a program is from watching the effects of smoking pot, using drugs, going to questionable movies, etc.! Yes, our youth in our SPJST and Sokol both have their summer days rather well planned so that they do not have to idle their days away looking for something to do, especially getting into mischief and unnecessary evils. It is rather deploring to watch our TV on so many occasions and realize the effect television has on the viewing audience and, nearly continually, it is lacking in truly educational value. Naturally, here in Texas and, especially our smaller towns and cities we do not have quite the problem that they have in the metro-politan areas and large cities.

This nation of ours, the United States of America, deserves a good future of generations who will be a credit to the background on which the democracy of our United States was founded! Let us work toward that goal.

The entire groups of youth deserves our praise and now comes the State Royalty which will be held Saturday, September 29th at Lodge No. 180, Burleson and we are sure that there will also be a large turnout; Lodge No. 180 members are looking forward to the day and have always proved to be gracious hosts.

Of course, a little prior to that time is the Grand Opening and Dedication of the new home of Lodge No. 187, Round Rock to be held Sunday, September 16th. That is just "around the corner" and they are looking for many to be

Let us help them off to a good beginning in their new home. *** This year we have done our best to furnish the pictures to you, on the pages of our Vestnik, of our YAD as soon as possible. NEWSBRIEFS In the recent SVPS Convention concluded in the Ramada Inn in Temple, Vladimir Bily of Houston was re-elected president (full-time officer), as were First Vice President Sidney Mensik of Rosenberg and Second Vice President W.L. Bayer of Bryan. Jed Walzel of Needville was elected secretary, succeeding Frank Hanka of Houston who was elected treasurer.

David Hajek of Seymour was elected attorney, replacing L.A. Kucera of Houston. New Auditing Committee member is Dr. B.F. Grill of Seymour.

G.J. Walzel of Needville and William Svec of Houston were re-elected to the Auditing Committee.

The delegates were treated to an evening luncheon and concert (dance) by the Seaton Brass Band at Seaton Star Hall on Monday, August 27th. Local SVPS Lodge No. 14 in Temple hosted the evening.

Jed and Gilbert Walzel are members of SPJST Lodge 81 Needville; William Svec and Frank Hanka, Jr., are members of Lodge 88 Houston. David Hajek is a member of Lodge 73 Seymour. The new officers were installed by Amos Pavlik of La Grange, state president of KJT, and all will assume office January 1st, 1980.

Officers of the Supreme Lodge SPJST visited and brought greetings to the SVPS delegates on behalf of the SPJST. -NAM Dr. Philip C. Lindsay, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Lindsay of Llano, is serving as Chief Resident Surgeon at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin until January 1st when he returns to St. Joseph's Hospital. in Houston to complete his surgical residency on June 30th. He and his wife, Toni, have two daughters, Alexis and Allison, and a new little son, Jason. Dr. Lindsay and his parents are members of Lodge Komensky No. 20, Granger.

SAN ANTONIO LODGE 133 HOSTS DISTRICT VII MEETING SEPTEMBER 16th The District VII fall meeting will be hosted by Lodge 133 Sunday, September 16th at the Navaho Building, located at Comanche Park No. 2 on Rigsby Avenue.

We extend our invitation to all our fraternal members to the District VII meeting which will be held in conjunction with the 62nd birthday celebration of Lodge No. 133.

A ham dinner will be available at $2 a plate to be served from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The district meeting will begin at 1 p.m.

We would like to have all local members and guests who will attend this meeting to call the following members and tell them how many of you are coming for dinner. Dear Members: Our meeting was well attended last Monday. It seems more members are getting interested in what goes on between the Saturday night dances.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Salac, which were approved.

The reports were given by entertainment, youth leader, house, Dallas Culture Society, hall rental and baseball. Congratulations to the team on winning third place in the City Playoffs.

House Committee Chairman Salac thanked all who helped move gravel into the parking lot; also, Vice President Ondrusek thanked all for helping address all the envelopes with tickets for our Czechfest in them. Did you receive yours? Have you sold or bought all of the tickets? We sure need the support of all our members on this big event. House Committee Chairman Salac also would like all members who can help clean the hall inside and out to be at the lodge Wednesday, September 5th.

The Sunshine Committee sent get-well cards to Mrs. Walter Janousek, Sister Debbie Jarma and Brother Don Lennox.

Sympathy cards were sent td Brother Frank Strouhal on the low of his mother, Brother Fred Schaerd'el also on the loss of his mother; and Dr. and Mrs. Kerry Goad on the loss of Mrs. Goad's mother.

Congratulations to Brother and Sister Bill Adaska on a new baby boy and to Brother and Sister Jeffrey Burton on a baby girl.

By Mickey Rice Lodge No. 88 is very proud and fortunate to have such outstanding talent in the Dramatic Club to repeat the three-act comedy "Eager Miss Beaver". The cast is deeply, and successfully, engaged in rehearsals for this performance and will present it to you on September 16 at 2 p.m. After observing one rehearsal last week it made me appreciate even more that I belong to the Club. From my point of view, the play will be a smashing success after seeing the cast invest so much time, effort and fun as well, in

Youth Leader Erwin Holy reported on the youth club, District VI YAD winners from our lodge were Mark Sevcik, Melissa and Tommy Holy, Laurie, Janelle and Chris Chudej. Good luck was expressed to our youth at the State YAD. It was agreed to hold our next meeting on the third Sunday in September, which will be September 16th due to a picnic held on our regular meeting date.

Our 50-year member was recognized as Brother George Bucek. Brother Charles Holy read the names • of all the 50-year and over members from our lodge.

President Zabransky then thanked the ladies of the lodge for their donations of food for the dinner He also recognized Brother Erwin Holy as chairman of the Barbecue Committee and Sister Linda Mikush as head of the kitchen and their helpers for the wonderful job they did.

Refund checks were given out followed by the drawing for door prizes and the youth club prize winners.

The afternoon was spent playing games provided by the youth club, playing dominoes and visiting. Refreshments were served. The day was well attended and enjoyed by all.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, September 16th, the third Sunday, at the Grant Building, beginning at 2 p.m. August and September birthdays will be honored.

Refreshments and lunch will be served as usual. Make plans to attend.

LODGE NO. 183, MID-CITIES Dear Readers: Members of Lodge 183 Mid-Cities who attended the first anniversary of our sister Lodge, Lodge 180 in Burleson, included President Bernard Hlavaty, his wife, Betty, Treasurer Inez Greenlees, Secretary Maurine Hamilton and Robert and Pat Sill. We all had a great time. Betty, Inez and Maurine supported the cake walk by each baking a cake.

Lodge 183 received its first donation to the newly-formed Memorial Fund: Bernard and Betty Hlavaty donated $100 to the fund in memory of Betty's father, Joe B. Lucian.

Money donated to this fund will aid the building fund. It was Inez Greenlees who suggested we start a Memorial Fund in our lodge. Inez will be in charge of collecting and recording these memorials.

Keep in mind the next monthly meeting of Lodge 183 will be held on the third Sunday of September which is September 16th at 2 p.m. in Arlington at the Arlington Downs Townhouse Clubhouse, located on Westview Terrace just off Fielder Road. Make plans now to be present and help,make Lodge 183 Mid-Cities an outstanding lodge.

One last comment, just wanted to say how pleased we are to have Br. Rudy Sefcik spinning the records on the West Polka program on Sundays. We are proud of you, Brother Rudy, and you sound great on the radio.

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends; Everyone seems to enjoy a bit of news now and then about their friends, so here are a few items gathered between lodge meetings, the next being on September 9, at 2 p.m.

In the beginning of August Steve Matusevitch enjoyed his birthday; his granddaughter Kathy Oujesky baked him a special cake and with her family shared it at his home. Steve and Lydia's daughter Lillian was in town so the whole group took part in a second celebration at the Richard Hubenak home. Not much later we were sorry to hear that Steve had gone to the hospital, however, his stay there was brief. A few days after his return home, his wife Lydia was taken to St. Joseph Hospital also, but at this date we are glad to learn both are resting at home. At about the same time as the above mentioned, Richard Hubenak was in Harris Hospital but is now again enjoying Mary's TLC (tender loving care).

Another of our members, Joe Koci, spent a few days in Cardiac Care at Medical Plaza. He came home but found it necessary to go back for treatment a second time.

After undergoing knee surgery Bessie Prochaska is spending a few weeks in a convalescent home until she is ambulatory again. Eleanor Murphy and Gladys Reid were also ill recently.

Thankfully all of the information is not of a serious nature. The Gordon Lee Hubenak's became parents of a baby girl. I do not have her name or that of her big sister. John and Caron Mikeska's baby was a boy and was named John Michael. Art and Tillie Gillis are most likely back from a stay in Las Vegas and no doubt the Cihaceks (Mary, Phyllis and Hermika) are reminiscing about their latest trip to Czechoslovakia. A chartered bus for 43 persons went to Lincoln, Nebraska for a Polka Festival and Roy and Lydia Alholm were aboard. Mac and Lily McMillan reportedly attended the same Festival. All said it proved to be most enjoyable.

Minnie and Robert Ruzicka didn't have to leave home to visit. They had, as company, their grandson Cal Ruzicka, son of Calvin and Rachel, all the way from Toronto, Canada. Another grandson, David Burkhalter and his wife Diane, were here with a great-granddaughter, Carina. David is the son of Lonnie and Gladys (Ruzicka) Burkhalter.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Members: The Entertainment Committee completed all detailed work for the Czechfest for September 9th. This year, more than ever, we need the full support of all of our members whether you buy the tickets or sell them or by donating for any of the many booths: gift booth, pastry booth, country store, greenhouse, cake walk, homecanned booth, nic nac booth or buy tickets for the many items that are being offered at the bar or Sister Wanda Petr's ceramic cake cover. The hall will be cool and there will be color television to watch in the Conference Room (the Cowboy

game), what else! You neea not rush home after eating the Czech dinner which will consist of pork roast and klobase, parsley potatoes, green beans, sauerkraut, bread, Czech pastry dessert and drink, for $3 adult and $1.50 for child's plate.

Our Kitchen Committee is asking for pastry, please. The doors open at 10 a.m. and stay late...Don't forget the children in your rush because many items of interest: fish pond, bean bag throw, nacho booth and other fun things will keep them occupied. It is Sunday, September 9th; we'll see you.

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 87 held its regular meeting Friday evening, August 10th, at 7:30 p.m. with President Vlasta Jez presiding.

The meeting was called to order and Brother Jerry Valchar led the lodge in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

The lodge membership remained standing in silent tribute to deceased member, Brother Frank Jez. Dorothy Chervenka read the minutes of the July meeting; they were approved as read.

Officers gave their reports and old and new business was discussed.

The following new members- were accepted into our lodge: Robert Bernard Nemec, Bruce Cary Burton, Carol Elaine Burton, Ronald Lee W'olienach, Holly Renee Hobbs; and renewal was for Samuel W. Wood. We welcome, these new members.

The Seaton Choral Club met for a special rehearsal with the following members present: Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, Otto and Matilda Hanus, Frank and Eleonora Spanhel, Calvin Chervenka, Agnes Schiller, Stazie Horelica, Ann Krcha, Emily Stuteville, Ruby Bolton, Willie and Adeline Kohutek, Clarence and Wanona Sula, Annie Jakubec (our leader), Georgia Sodek, Marie Zvolanek, Linda Wilde, Albina Mikeska, Lillian Kosarek, Leon and Vallie Zavodny and Henry and Helen Janacek.

We had a great time practicing the songs we planned to sing at the WESTFEST Sunday, Sept. 2nd from 12:30 to 1 p.m.

After rehearsal we had a short business meeting: minutes from last rehearsal were read and accepted as written. We discussed an invitation from the Czech Day Committee of the Dallas Fair and, after some discussion, we voted not to participate. Sister

Lillian Kosarek presented a map how to find their Canyon Lake retreat and we hope as many as possible can go: this will be held on the second Saturday and Sunday in September. Bring your drinks, salads, sweets, folding chairs and pillows if you can but even if you can't come any way; everyone will be accommodated if possible. If you have a spare deck of dominoes bring them with you.

It was really nice to have the extra mew' voices with us.

Our secretary read the roll call of officers and he read the minutes of the previous meeting.

The Property Committee report was given and the treasurer's report was also given.

New members accepted were Kenneth Doyle Sefcik, Rebecca Alice Sefcik, David Wayne Sefcik, Christy.

Michelle Caldwell, David James Caldwell, Brady Wayne Kolensky, Hank Louis Siegmund and Susan Marie Siegmund.

Youth Leader Melvin Steger gave his report. They had 55 members present at the meeting and two new members. He reminded everyone about Youth Achievement Day, and that they have eleven entries plus a scrapbook going to State YAD competition. LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: We had the music of the Country Rhinditions at the Saturday night dance. Everyone really enjoyed listening and dancing to the music.

There was a large crowd to attend.

We were scheduled to have our Cleanup Day at the lodge on September 2nd. A barbecued venison was also planned to be served afterward.

Everyone was asked to come and help cleanup the lodge.

We are still raising money to replace the dance floor. Anyone who wishes to contribute to it can do so at the ticket counter at Lodge 74.

I hope everyone remembers to drive safely now that school has started.

home. I wish to say Hi! to the lovely couple, Brother Frank and Sister Mary Faltesek, and my old friend, Louise Janca.

The special dance Saturday night, August 25th with the 16-piece Ed Gerlach Orchestra was a complete Brother Joe and Ann Elzner had sellout; but, to my amazement, most of company from Klamath Falls, Oregon. the present people were guests and a Nephew Franklin Elzner, visited very small percentage were our relatives here in Corpus Christi. Ann members. The ladies, as usual for such also introduced him to our social games occasions, were all dressed beautifully here which he didn't know anything and also their escorts. Wednesday, September 5, 19'19 CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS Sokol Instructor's Course The Southern District ASO provides instructors to teach our future leaders in the gymnasium; also Sokol and Czech history. This course started August 13th, 1979 and ended August 18th. Our job was to house and feed the 24 students and 5 instructors. The students were from Texas, Nebraska, Chicago, New York and Maryland and 3 were from our unit in Corpus Christi, Texas: Jeff Howard, Nancy Sijansky and Donna Wierhik.

August 15th my daughter, Ann Peal, and I attended the instructor's course in the morning; Ann in the kitchen and I was in the gym. When I was spotted by gym students Sister Nancy and Brother Wayne Sijansky, I was ushered from the door entrance to the tables where students were busy with the paperwork.

When the students were finished, in the next few minutes, I was introduced by the principal of the instructor's staff, Brother Jerry Milan from Fort Worth, Texas.

Later, when all gym students had a break for a few minutes, I had the pleasure and honor to meet Brother Jerry's family; his lovely wife, Henrietta; their sons, Rome, age 21 and a college student in gymnastics and athletic classes, and Talon, 16, a student in high school. This boy was delighted to hear when I said that I knew his grandparents since 1924, the day when a Sokol Southern District Slet in Fort Worth, Texas was held. We had just bought a new Dodge auto equipped with "Balloon" tires.

Saturday morning eight persons (my family of six, Ed Kadlecek and Matylda Ruzicka, all from Buckholts, Texas) went to the slet. My family was hosted by the Svitak family. We stayed there overnight from Saturday to Sunday.

After the slet we returned home in the middle of the night. When the Southern District Slet was held June 12 and 13, 1954 in Corpus Christi, the Milan family from Fort Worth participated. Contestant Brother Jerry's age was close to 20 years. If my memory serves me right, they immigrated to Galveston, Texas from Yugoslavia, the same year 1906 when our family immigrated. The Milan family and ours met often at Sokol slets and also in •the SPJST conventions.

After the instructor's course ended Saturday morning, August 18, 1979, my son-in-law, Roy Peal, picked me up in his air-conditioned vehicle and, at 10 a.m., we were at the SPJST and Sokol Hall to attend the planned program.

The Huber-Bonac-Bozeckj -Zarosky families assembled in 1960 for a nice family gathering in Granger, Texas.

The cooks in the kitchen were busy preparing the meal and the students were in the gymnasium room for their exhibition. In a moment I was informed that Miro and his lovely wife, Vlasta Jurcik are present and it was no trouble to find them. They were sitting at the table with their granddaughter, Robin Maca; her father, Ben Maca, is the president of the Southern District (ASO). When I asked how the name was spelled, they said the same as the bird "Robin," translated to the Czech language: "Cermak" or "Cervenka." It is a beautiful red' colored bird and a pleasant singer.

For myself, the most interested gym student, who was one of the smallest and youngest (age 16), was Rodney Houdek from Ennis, Texas. He was the only one who participated in the six-day course from there. He said that they have about SO gymnasts. In my opinion he will be one of the leaders in the Karel Havlicek Borovsky Sokol unit in Ennis, Texas some day. When I asked him if he knows Miss Agnes Houdek in Dallas, who writes regularly in the Czech section in Vestnik; he proudly said: "She is my aunt!" He said that he is also a member of SPJST. He was surprised when I handed him one of the SPJST souvenir ball-point pens.

Exhibition From 10:40 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the 24 gymnast students on the main floor plus five instructors and technical staff on the stage demonstrated to the members and audience what they had learned. It took many hours of hard work to

accomplish this harmonious program. I was enthusiastic with the progress that was made in our organization. With this staff there on the stage, were president of the Sokol Southern District, Brother Ben Maca and president of the local Sokol unit, Brother Gene Lehnert.

Brother Jerry Milan, the master of ceremonies, introduced all students, all the persons on the stage who made a brief address, some names who were present in the audience and expressed cordial thanks to the cooks and all who participated to bring this undertaking to a successful conclusion.

The program ended at 12 p.m. and the announcer said the meal is ready to be served. Then there was a collection of signatures on the photo pictures and many more pictures snapped. The highlight, for me, in this 1 1/7 hour program, were the dances with their traditional folk songs in Czech and Slovak.

My salute to Brother Jerry Sijansky, the men's director, Sister Sandra Howard, the women's director, and all their assistants, for this week well done.

John Stasa Historian NEWS FROM CORPUS CHRISTI AND ROBSTOWN The annual meeting of Sokol, Corpus Christi was held Thursday, August 9th, with 31 members and 2 guests present.

Members voted approval of accepting Mark and Virginia Rebecek as new members.

Reports were made by the various officers and committees.

Then the election of officers was held; the following were elected for 1979-80: President Eugene Lehnert Vice President Frank Veselka Recording Secretary Helen Pavelka Financial Secretary Ann Pittaway Treasurer Carl Meadows Delegates Frank L. and Susan Sacky They will take office in the September meeting, which will be held Thursday, September 13th at 8 p.m.

Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi held their August meeting Sunday, August 12th with not too many members attending.

Financial Secretary Millie Elzner was absent (she was gone on vacation). All other officers were present.

Correspondence was read and reports were made.

A Memorial Fund has been established and it will be used for furnishing and making improvements in the library. The first donations were in memory of recently deceased members, Julie Kucera, John Ulcak and Edwin Waida. Names of donors will be written in a Memorial Book to be kept by Ann M. Moss.

Lodge 79 will hold a fall function and a committee has been appointed to work out the details. The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, September 9th, at 3 p.m. at the hall.

The annual celebration held August 5th turned out very well; we had a nice day with a good turnout. Many people came to eat the delicious barbecued beef and stayed for the singing of the Czech Singers of Victoria, who were good. The dance could have had a better attendance but those who did come seemed to enjoy themselves.

The winners of the tickets were: The $100 bill was won by Mrs. Schiller from Temple who was visiting here; the second prize was a large beautiful afgan and it was won by Frank Dudzienski (the hall's friendly bartender); the third prize consisted of 5 albums or 5 (8-T) tapes which were won by Cindy Finley of Paris, Texas, the granddaughter of Frances Dudzienski. The country store did very well and I would like to thank those who donated items and also those who helped work; it was certainly appreciated.

The Southern District Sokol Volleyball Tournament on August 11th was successful and I was told that it was 'quite interesting to watch; sorry that I

could not see it. This was the first time that it has been held in the area but it won't be the last.

The Sokol instructors' course held August 13-18 was good with instructors and participants from several states besides Texas and they were busy all week, too. A trip to Padre Island was part of the entertainment which they seemed to enjoy and some acquired a sunburn. The course ended with a program on Saturday, August 18th with the students showing what they had learned. Next year, the instructors' course will be back in Corpus Christi.

They enjoyed it so much, they want to come back here.

Coming on September 9th, the Czech Heritage Society is sponsoring a dance from 5 to 9 p.m. at Sokol Hall with music by Pavelka's. The tickets are interesting and colorful; they are printed in Czech and English on red, white and blue paper. Pre-sale tickets are $2.50 per person and will be $3 at the door and for tickets and additional information, call Christine Knapek at 852-7695 or Frank Veselka at 853-6137 or Helen Pavelka at 387-1384. There are others selling the tickets in area towns.

We hope to have a big crowd for our third annual dance.

The battle dance August 19th with Shimeks and Majeks at Sokol Hall had a large turnout. The next battle dance is scheduled for September 16th with Majeks and Tommie Vanek playing.

The kitchen is open for dances, serving sandwiches and when available, kolaches also are sold.

In Robstown, plans are being completed for the annual barbecue of Robstown Community Hall which will be held Sunday, September 23rd.

Everyone is invited to come for a delicious meal. It will conclude with a dance from 6 to 10 p.m., with music by Pavelkas. This is the only annual function that the Community Hall has every year; coming to Robstown October 13th are the Edna Polka Boys.

Get-well wishes go to Frank Veselka, who had surgery recently and is up and around and doing well.

More news next month. Some of the news in this letter are little late but this reporter has been busy. It has been raining today and more heavy rains are forecast for our area: results of the tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico.

HOUSTON LODGE NO. 88 BIRTHDAY CLUB SISTERS The Bazaar and Prize Committee of the Birthday Club Sisters expresses their most sincere thanks to all who made donations and to everyone who supported this project on Homecoming Day, an endeavor culminating in such a huge success. It was the best cooperation we have achieved in a long time, and the committee is proud of the accomplishment that was made possible.

Esther Holton chose the lovely Shell flower pot made and donated by Ellen Enell of "Shell Craft"; 10. Pat Wisnoski went for the large box of groceries from the Birthday Club; 11. Emily Sebek also chose a box of the Birthday Club donated groceries; 12. H.J. Jarisch selected the quart-size hand-crocheted "Firewater" holder with bottle, made and donated by Loleen Peeples; 13. Mary Spacek won the Calico Cat door stop made and donated by Lillian Finn.

14. Joe Elzner won the unusual black mammy napkin holder donated by the Birthday Club Sisters.

A special white angel food cake was baked by our Birthday Club Sister Della Miksch and was auctioned off for a nice sum; then donated back to the Birthday Club Sisters by Willie Mae Wood, and again auctioned off during the dance intermission. Harry Finn was the final possessor.

SPJST SOFTBALL TEAM REPORT

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Brothers and Sisters: Thursday night, August 9th, we played a makeup game in our Richardson League against St. Paul's and won the game by a score of 7 to 1.

Lionel Schulz pitched the first 4 innings allowing no runs, one walk, 3 hits and 4 strikeouts and Roy Andrews, our southpaw, pitched the last 3 innings allowing 1 run, 4 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts..

Leading our hitters were Danny Yates with a homerun and a single, Jeff Burton with 2 singles, Billy Weatherford hit a homerun, Don Lennox had a single and Don Palm and Kenny

Skierski, each had a sacrifice.

We entered the ASA Tournament in Dallas and played our first game Monday night, August 13th at 8 p.m. at Kiest Diamond No. 1. We played First Presbyterian and we lost by a score of 3 to 1. Although, Roy Andrews was the losing pitcher, he hurled a fine game allowing 3 runs, 3 hits, 4 base-on-balls and 7 strikeouts.

Offensively, we did 6 hits, but not enough at the right time and we should. have won this game. Don Palm hit a homerun, Don Lennox had a single, Roy Andrews had a single, Danny Yates had a single, Jeff Burton had a single, Billy Weatherford also hit a single, and Kenny Skierski got on base via a base-on-ball. By losing, we dropped down into the loser's bracket and had to play again Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, August 14th, we played Overhead Door at Kiest No. 2 and we won our first game by a score of 6 to 2.

Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 6 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks and struck out 3 batters.

At bat Jeff Burton was the leading batter with 3 singles, Don Palm and Roy Andrews, each had singles and Don Lennox got on base via a walk. As a result of this win, we had to play again at 8 p.m. and we had to win to remain in the tournament. At 8 p.m. our opponent was the strong Casa View Baptist team featuring John Duck; a pitcher we have had trouble beating the last 15 years or so. To make a short ending to this story, we still didn't beat him and his team and we lost by a score of 5 to 0. We did play well, but we just didn't get any runs and 2 hits. Roy Andrews was our pitcher allowing 5 runs, 8 hits, one walk and 4 strikeouts.

Offensively, we only had 2 singles, one by Roy Andrews and one by Don Lenhox. We were eliminated from the tournament and thus our season came to a close. It was a very good and enjoyable season and successful also.

We finished with a 9 and 3 record in our Dallas City Major League which should have put us probably at least second or tied for second place. We finished tied for first place in our Richardson League and we did- quite well in most tournaments and finished in third place for the Dallas City Champion Playoffs.

We are already looking forward to next season and possible the team will play in a fall league. More about this later as details are available.

I want to state here to all the team members: Thanks for your efforts, it has been fun and better luck next season.

Also, my thanks to Lionel Schulz for helping me out this season; to Jerry Zabojnik for his help and my deepest

thanks to Jerry Manak for keeping our score book every game, that was lots of work and the team is most appreciative for your efforts.

We still have the team's fishing trip coming up September 21, 22 and 23 to Lake Whitney about twenty guys are going and we are hoping for an enjoyable outing and hope that we can catch some fish.

The annual steak and awards banquet is also coming up soon, but the date as yet has not been set.

Remember, our annual Lodge Czechfest Sunday, September 9th, lots of good food and fun for all, so do come and support this lodge function. The Softball Team is responsible for the pastry and cake booth and cake walk.

Therefore, any cakes or other pastries will be deeply appreciated for our booth from the team players' wives and from all the ladies of Lodge 84. We are hoping for a large attendance, so please help us all make this a great success.

YOUTH SECTION

The curtains closed on the 1979 State Youth Achievement Day. Many of the boys and girls went home happy with trophies and ribbons, but as always, there were those who only received the applause from the audience or picked up their craft with only the participation ribbons and $5 participation money to take home. I am very proud of every boy and girl there because they were there trying and that is realy the name of the game. All of them were winners at their district competition.

I want to say a big thank you to everyone who worked so well the day of State YAD. Without your help it would not have been possible because there are so many things going on at one time. A special thanks to Bro. Morris, SL Pres. and Head of the Youth Department, for being the Master of Ceremonies again this year. This is not an easy task because of the necessary delays between each talent act and the long afternoon.

Now everyone can start thinking about next year's YAD. What can be done to improve on this year's entries and where could you have done better?

Be sure to stay active in your local youth clubs so eligibility won't be the problem.

The summer camps were all a great success. A few of the district should have had more campers but there were no major problems, injuries or sickness..

Dear Members and Friends: I guess almost all the youth have started back to school. Please remember the safety rules while going to and from school.

Nine of us attended the State YAD in Temple. We really enjoyed it. The meal was real good and everyone , really enjoyed watching the talent. It is great watching the youth members doing such creative things and not keeping their talents hidden. There were many craft exhibits on display also showing the youths' other talents. Congratulations to all the contestants, even the ones who didn't get first place, you all were very good!

We have a member who is ill. We want to extend our get-well wishes to Ricky Flasowski who is in the hospital at Lufkin, Texas. He had emergency surgery and is doing a lot better.

The youth will help with the cleanup for the mother lodge. I hope all will come and help and enjoy the meal afterward.

I want to congratulate Terri Bobalik for receiving a plaque for being high point winner for District II at State YAD. We all appreciate her help and work in our youth club.

Dear Members and Friends: We had our monthly youth club meeting Sunday, August 19th at the Arlington Downs Townhouse Clubhouse. We had seven members present and one officer, Beverly Betik, absent.

Youth Club President Gary Roznovsky led the discussion on plans to go to Six Flags. The members decided to all meet at the front gate at Six Flags on Sunday, September 9th, at 9:30 a.m.

Each youth club member will then be presented with a $2.25 from the youth club's fund to use toward the purchase of their ticket which is $9.25 or to use to purchase a meal. The park will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Each member may also bring a friend.

After the meeting everyone enjoyed a special treat of homemade ice-cream brought by me and cold drinks furnished by the youth club's President Gary Roznovsky.

Our next youth club meeting will be held Sunday, September 16th, at 2 p.m. at the Arlington Downs Townhouse Clubhouse. We will make our plans then for our camping trip. Please come and join in the fun.

Dear Readers, Sunday, August 26th SPJST members from all over the state journeyed to Temple High School for the annual State Youth Achievement Day. The very large crowd arrived at 10:45 a.m. for registration and did not depart until well after 6 p.m.

Our lodge was well represented this year in both craft and talent. Our senior group consisting of Tena Urbanek, Steve Stanislav and Karen Shelton won first place in the senior group talent competition. They presented a flute, piano and trumpet trio to the tunes of "The Hustle" and "One Tin Soldier."

Steve Stanislav also won third place in Individual Talent. In crafts we were very well-represented by Tena Urbanek, Vikki Nors, Steve Stanislav, Janice Stanislav, Donna Stanislav, Bradley Nors and Randy Nors.

I hope all of you are making plans to attend the State, Royalty competition in Burleson Saturday, September 29th.

Dear Members, The State Youth Achievement Day on August 26th at Temple High School was attended by a large number of members, friends and relatives of each participant.

I enjoyed watching the Individual and Group Talent entries because they were well presented and none of the contestants were afraid to perform.

I was surprised when my name was announced as first place winner in Pictorial Arts in the 13-14 age division, because I took only six art lessons after school ended last spring. I had a very good teacher.

Congratulations to each achiever at State YAD including those who placed in other categories.

I want to thank the SPJST for my trophy and ribbon that Mrs. Dorothy Massey, our State Youth Director, presented me on the stage.. Even if I hadn't won anything, I still have to admit that the entire day was well taken care of by the people behind the scenes.

After we registered our scrapbook, we , went out to eat to ,Sarnbo's, and were we hungry!

Afterward all of us left Sambo's and went back to Temple High School to see the talent show; the individual talent started at 12:30 p.m., group talent followed. At 1:10 p.m all of us took a break and were back at 1:25 p.m. The master of ceremonies introduced the judges and workers behind the scene.

Then the talent winners were announced. Following talent awards, the arts and craft awards were given..

Wednesday, September 5, 1979 Next came the announcements of the scrapbook winners; we won second place in district and second place in state. We never thought our club would win out of 16 scrapbook entries. After everything was over, we picked up our ribbon and scrapbook and left Temple High School at 5:30 p.m.

On the way to Ennis we stopped at Bonanza for supper and the food sure did taste good. We arrived in Ennis about 8:30 p.m. When we got home we called everyone to tell the good news.

Dear Vestnik Readers, We left from our lodge at 8 a.m. for State Youth Achievement Day. Our youth leader and five members attended. We got to Temple around 10 a.m. We registered our scrapbook in the competition. For lunch we ate at Sambo's. Boy was that good!

We returned and watched individual and group talent. After a break the master of ceremonies introduced the people behind the stage and the judges.

Awards were then presented. Our scrapbook won second place in the state. Our youth leader couldn't believe it, and we couldn't either.

We left Temple High School about 5:30 p.m. and ate supper at Bonanza.

We arrived in Ennis at 8:30 p.m. and then we called all our members and told them the good news.

who died suddenly Friday morning, July 20th in Scott and White Hospital in Temple, at the age of 53 years, 5 months and 12 days.

Brother Tydlacka was born at Dime Box in Lee County, the son of the late Frank J. Tydlacka and Mrs. Mary Koudelka Tydlacka of Dime Box. He grew up in Dime box and graduated Fraternally, from the Dime Box High School.

(8-27-79) Joseph Bartos He was a veteran of WWII, served - SPJSTfrom 1944 to 1946 overseas in the 749th LODGE NO. 50, EL CAMPO Field Artillery Battalion in patrol in the Asiatic Pacific Theather.

The SPJST Lodge No. 50 El Campo, Brother Tydlacka was married to youth held their monthly meeting at the Miss Gloria Shoppe on August 11, 1948 Edward Ermis residence August 20th. at Frenstat; they moved to Burleson We had a short meeting.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gloria Tydlacka of Somerville; three sons, Adrian Wade Tydlacka of Alburquerque, N.M., Glenn Charles of Bryan and Frank John Tydlacka of Somerville and one daughter, Mrs. Rick (Shirley Jean) Houdek of Houston; one granddaughter, Suzanne Tydlacka of Alburquerque, N.M.; mother, Mrs. Mary Tydlacka of Dime Box; and one sister, Mrs. Pete (Olga) Sukup of Georgetown.

Funeral service mass for Brother Frank John Tydlacka of Route 1, Somerville was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 22nd in the Holy RosarY Catholic Church in Frenstat, with the Rev. Isadore Rozycki officiating and assisted by the Rev. George Tydlacka of Taylor.

Interment was in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church Cemetery.

We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge Komensky No. 20 Granger, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother FRANK R. VOLNY, who passed away Tuesday, August 21st, 1979 in a Bartlett nursing home, after a long illness.

Services were held at 10 a.m. in Bartlett at the Goodnight. Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. George Tydlacka officiating. Burial was in the Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in Corn Hill, Texas.

Brother Volny was born in Granger and was a retired farmer. He was 86 years old and was a member of Lodge Komensky for 63 years.

He had resided in Bell and Williamson Counties his entire life.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Alice Briggs of Olympia, Wash.; two sisters, Miss Ella Volny of Dallas and Mrs. Effie Tucker of Temple; eight grandchildren, and fourteen greatgrandchildren.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and his memory live among us forever.
