FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK In an effort to continue interest that has been generated in our fraternal life insurance SPJST Society activities throughout the State of Texas, Pinewood Heritage Lodge No. 178 in Longview volunteered to host the District III Youth Achievement Day Sunday, June 24th.

Active youth club members, ranging from ages 6 through 17, were busy preparing their entries for competition.

Approximately 250 entries were registered in Foods, Home Arts, Hobby Kits, Miscellaneous, Science/Educational, Pictorial Arts and Constructed Items. These entries were judged on creative ability, appearance, design, educational value and neatness.

Individual talent and group talent competition was. also a main factor for the youngsters in our organization.

Some of the competition included dancing, vocal, band and musical instrument numbers.

The highlights of the day climaxed with the king and queen competition.

King and queen candidates are on their own when they compete at district and state level. They are not judged per couple from a lodge representation.

Their contest is judged on appearance, personality, poise, posture and speech (based on content and delivery of the speech). Each king and queen candidate may have a duke and duchess to enhance the royal court coronation ceremonies.

There were a large number of youngsters competing from various areas including Dallas. Ennis. Fort

[Author Unknown] Worth, Elk, Longview, Mart, Waco and West. Lodges Elk and Waco brought their young members on buses to travel the 370-mile round trip activity.

The State Youth Achievement Day is scheduled for August 26th at the Temple High School; and the State Royalty on Saturday, September 29th at SPJST Lodge No. 180 in Burleson.

Needless to say, since District III is our district, we wanted to attend, however, with a nearly 400 mile round trip facing us and the gasoline situation being what it is, we had our doubts. We made the trip, and got home after filling our tank with two $5 limit purchases of high-priced gas.

Brother Hugo Kocian, wife Viola and many other members of Lodge No. 178 are to be commended for their sincere efforts in trying to show our fellow members and citizens in their part of Texas what the SPJST Society is all about.

It is commendable of Lodge 178 members who took care of the effective

advertising through local newspapers and on Radio Station KYKX by Andrea Druschke (reigning as Miss Gregg County and Miss Imperial of Texas) who helped publicize the eventful occasion for the purpose of promoting the good deeds the people of the SPJST endeavor to accomplish. She was also among one of the judges in talent and royalty. The TV Channel 7 in Tyler also gave a good coverage of the SPJST activities. They are all appreciated. *** Sunday, July 1st we decided to accept District III Director Sid Pokladnik's invitation to attend the Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84 annual picnic on his and Sister Justine's ranch south of Ennis; he had stated that this would be the last picnic there because they were selling the property soon. The day was pleasant and, naturally warm, however, beneath those beautiful pecan trees, with the breeze blowing, it was very pleasant. It was a fraternally-spent afternoon among members and friends of our Society and that is where Brother Sid seems to enjoy himself.

There were hayrides, wagon rides, horseshoe pitching and various other activities available and some of our fellow elderly male members seemed to enjoy this activity the most: just spreading a blanket or quilt on the grass in the shade and enjoying the rest and breeze — who can blame them? Let the rest of the family have their fun!

It is 9:15 a.m. Friday morning, July 6th and the small radio in our office is on and the announcer has just announced that Martina Navratilova has just won her second world tennis championship in Wimbledon, England.

She had asked the Czechoslovak Government to allow her mother to come see her play and her\ request was granted. ***

To our Czech section readers—our Czech section will be very limited this week; your editor will explain later.

NEVVSBRIEFS Agnes (Poboril) Blakk, 86, of the Seaton Community east of Temple and Route 3, died in her home on Sunday.

July 1st. Funeral services were held from the Seaton Brethren Church on July 3rd, with burial in the Seaton Cemetery. Sister Blakk was a longtime member of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton. For the last several years she had been living in the family home with son Joe. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe in 1963. Sister Bligek had joined Lodge 47 on August 11.

1912, at the age of 20. -NAM *** John Clifford Shiner, 31, was killed in a 2-vehicle accident near Buckholts late Sunday, July 1st. Funeral services were held from the Salem Lutheran Church Terrys Chapel near Barclay, with burial in the church cemetery. Brother Shiller was a member of Lodge IS Buckholts. NAM

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE SPJST History: An Update

Dear Members: Since my last report to you on the subject, I wish to report on the current status of the lodge histories received.

The following list shows the lodge histories that have been received as of 19 June 1979. I have also indicated those items that the various lodges need to send me in addition to the histories.

Please remember that I am still shooting for a target date of 1 January 1980 for receiving and completing the histories of the local lodges. There will be a lot of material still to be compiled in addition to the lodge histories, but if the lodges can get me their information by the first of the year, that will be a big help.

As stated before, if we do not receive your lodge's history, about the only thing that we can include in the final book version will be the name, number, date of organization, and a list of the charter members. In some instances this will be very brief. Right now, my biggest problem is gathering information on those lodges that existed at one time but which either disbanded or merged later.

If your lodge is not listed above, that means that nothing has been received from your lodge.

Many of the lodges listed above have long since either disbanded or been merged with other lodges. In most such cases, all we have here is a list of the charter members, date and place of organization (or chartering), and date of merger or disbanding. If any of you have any information on these lodges other than this, please send it to this office; otherwise the information on these lodges will be very scant and brief.

In a few instances I have noted what additional information or pictures are needed. All of the above lodges have still to send me a picture of their 1980 officers, but this will understandably come later.

As an observation, doing the research on all of these lodges, both current and disbanded or merged, was really an experience. In many instances, we had to determine what counties some of the more obscure lodges had been located in. It really gives you a good picture of what once existed throughout dozens of communities in Texas insofar as the SPJST was concerned. This portion of the history has been most tedious and time-consuming. Our thanks go out to those who have thus far submitted their histories, but there are still a goodly number not on the above list. Please study the list carefully and if additional information or pictures are needed, the lodge presidents should see to it that these are supplied, probably working through the person designated to compile the lodge history.

Later on in the summer or early fall, I will have still another update giving the status of the chapter on our lodges. In the meantime, I will be working on other phases of the final product.

Remember this guide: Other than skeletal information on your lodge, as I have mentioned before, if you don't send it, it can't be included in the book.

4 Touching on some other unrelated areas, I would make the observations that this past "spring" was one of the most unusual in many years. Farmers have been particularly hard hit by the excessive rains and flooding was not unusual. Many farmers did not have a chance to plant small grains such as milo and here in Central Texas that is one of the principal money crops.

Comparatively few acres of corn have been planted. For a while it appeared that they would not even have a chance to get in their cotton and those that did manage to plant it saw very small plants sitting in water for a while. Now that the cotton has been cultivated there appears to be a chance. What milo was planted will probably be attacked by the midge and so it goes....

Another area that is becoming of increasing concern almost by the day is the availability and price of motor fuel, especially gasoline and diesel. In our travels here out of the Supreme Lodge to various areas, especially on weekends, we have been "stranded" because not enough service stations were open selling gas. The few that were had long lines of irate motorists lined up and in some instances, after you sat in line for thirty minutes or an hour, someone came along carrying a sign stating, "Last Car To Get Gas". As luck would have it, that last car to get gas was just two or three cars ahead of ours. And if you were successful in finally reaching that precious destination at the pump you received the bad news about the price being in the mid or upper 80s for the price of a gallon of gasoline. As I stated at the 183 chartering in Burleson, I don't know the answer to the current dilemma, but I am disappointed that ,those who I feel should have the answer don't seem to know any more about it than the next man. And when you listen to the various opinions on television talk shows and debates on the problem, everyone seems to be placing the blame on another segment of the industry.

This is frustrating and exasperating, to say the least. In the meantime, the hapless consumer is caught in the middle with nobody having any explanation for anything - only excuses and he feels totally helpless. Then you stop and think that this, the mightiest and most powerful nation on the globe, is being brought to its knees by a situation that it apparently can do very little or nothing about. One school of thought thinks that we are simply at the mercy of those who have. We have long hefrcl about the "have" and the "have not" nations. Are we now among the

"have nots"? Since our entire industry and mobility of our population rests on _gasoline, it would appear that we are headed for the "have not" column.

Whatever the future brings, we will do our best to adjust to it and live with it. We may have to make some changes in the way we operate. If the present situation continues, it is clear that something is going to have to be curtailed - not because we WANT to, but because we will be COMPELLED to. We have observed that our network of interstate highways has become less congested in recent weeks. Probably the most frustrating experience is to see a service station pumping gas with about two cars waiting and the attendant putting up signs saying "Closed at 4 p.m." The time is 4:05 and the red light indicating a near-empty tank is on, so you keep driving, looking, hoping, and praying How much gasoline do you have in your car tank and how far do you intend to go on your next trip and is your license plate even or odd-numbered?

This now has special significance for motorists in Dallas, Tarrant, Harris, Brazoria, Collin, Liberty, Ellis, and Montgomery Counties. There are sizeable numbers of SPJST members in these counties. After the price reaches a dollar a gallon, the supply will probably be adequate. In the meantime, I hope Texans don't emulate the actions of some of the people in Levittown, Pennsylvania.

Incidentally, as this is being dispatched (Tuesday, June 26th), most areas could use a good rain. Ironic, isn't it, after all the recent heavy rains? The top of the earth is crusted and parched.

Today, a light shower fell in Temple, but areas to the northeast, north, and northwest have received larger amounts.

Due to your outstanding response, we were able to accomplish the distribution of the books in two (2) weeks, no small task with the large amount of sales representatives we have.

The sales representatives also responded in an outstanding manner, one even traveling three hundred and twenty miles, round trip to procure her rate book. This positive attitude is what makes our Society grow and we appreciate it.

Wednesday, July 11, 1979 SALES INSURANCE CLASSES HELD IN DISTRICT VII

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Readers: The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 6 Cottonwood was held and called to order by President Robert Dobecka on Sunday, July 1st.

Damon Perez and Terry Hykel were called on to recite the pledge of allegiance. Damon then led the membership in reciting the SPJST pledge.

Roll call of officers showed everyone present. There were 21 members present and no visitors.

Sister Barbara Hykel was called on to read the minutes of the previous meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

All other officers gave their reports and they were all approved as read.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz gave her youth report. The youth were called on to lead the membership in singing "America" and "America The Beautiful" in observance of Fourth of July. The youth made little drums to present to the rest home residents for Wednesday. July 11th. All the youth will be assigned their places and time to work at our lodge picnic for July 15th.

Sister Schuetz then called out all the winners in different categories that the youth placed at District III YAD_All the youth members entered items and everyone of them placed in 1st. 2nd. 3rd or Honorable Mention. Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz will give her report on all the winners. Queen Delores Dobecka and King Damon Perez were called on to present their speeches that they presented at YAD. Both youth members were runners-up in that contest. Congratulations were given to all the youth club members on their winnings by President Dobecka. The Beseda group will go to State YAD competition.

Other reports were given by different committees for the annual picnic. The Auction Committee has all assignments out for all individuals. Everyone will be asked to come out and help. Work will start Saturday. July 14th at 10 a.m.

At each class there was a good turnout and rate books were given out in conjunction with regularly scheduled classes. Monday, June 18th, the class was held at Commanche Corral in San Antonio. LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends: Just received the news of several of our members who are on the sick list and we would like to wish them a speedy recovery.

Brother David Milan underwent knee surgery this morning (July 3rd), Brother Frankie Milan who underwent surgery, late last night (3rd), on his hand where he almost lost three fingers in a lawnmower accident, Brother Laddie Struska is recuperating at the home of his daughter Sister Tina Parras after a 2-week stay in the hospital, with his leg surgery and to Sister Dona Mitef'f who is home recuperating after surgery. Good health is wished to you all real soon.

We were all saddened by the sudden passing away of Brother Bernie Polk of Lodge 92. Bernie was a good friend to many of us and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to Sisters Anne Juran Polk and Helen Skrasek and all their family.

Bernie was Helen's brother. We also extend our sincere sympathy to Brother Albert Kubala (Lodge 92) and family on the loss of his sister-in-law. May they rest in eternal peace.

SPJST SOFTBALL TEAM REPORT

LODGE NO. 81, DALLAS Dear Brothers and Sisters: Wednesday night, June 27th, we played an, outstanding game against Zip's Paint and we won by a score of 5 to 4. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 4 runs, 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3 batters.

Leading the team offensively were Rick Fountain with 2 singles and a double, Jerry Zabojnik had 2 singles, Don Lennox made a single, and Roy Andrews had a double and a walk.

Thursday night, June 28th, we played Carrollton and we won the game by a score of 7 to 1. Roy Andrews was the winning pitcher allowing 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 7 strikeouts.

Leading the team offensively were Billy Weatherford with a hoinerun and 2 singles, Kerry Goad with a homerun and a single, Don Lennox and Joe Harasta, both had 2 singles, Roy Andrews made a double and a base-on-balls, and Jeff Burton had a single plus a sacrifice hit.

Saturday, June 30th, we entered the Denton, Texas Tournament and played our first game at 10:30 a.m.

Our first opponent was GFC from Graham, Texas and we lost by a score of 5 to 2 because we allowed 4 unearned runs in the 3rd inning, which was our downfall. Actually, they had 1 earned run and we should or could have won by a score of 2 to 1. Lionel Schulz was the losing pitcher allowing 7 hits, 1 walk and -2 strikeouts.

Offensively, we had 10 hits, a sacrifice and only 2 runs, and we should have scored several more.

Jerry Zabojnik had 3 hits,. Robert

ons (a draftee) had 3 hits, Roy Andrews made 2 singles, Don Lennox earned a single hit, Rick Fountain had a double and Randy Christian made a sacrifice hit.

Our next game was at 3 p.m. against the Berea m Baptist team from Mesquite and we won by a score of 9 to 0. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 2 hits, 3 walks, and 6 strikeouts. Roy Andrews was supposed to pitch, but he sprained his ankle in the first game and was finished for the tournament. We hope his ankle will allow him to play next weekend at Stephenville.

Offensively, Rick Fountain, Randy Christian; Ken Butts and Ken Stubbs (both draftees), all had 2 singles a piece; Jeff Burton, Robert Simmons and Kerry Goad, all had single softies.

After the 10:30 a.m. game, we had a picnic lunch of Sid's Summer Sausage, pickles, rye bread, lettuce, tomatoes, chips, cookies and drinks. Our deepest thanks to Ida and Lionel Schulz for donating the sausage, rye bread, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. We really enjoyed the food under the shade on some nice park tables.

After the 3 p.m. game, we all went to McDonald's for a supper of hamburgers and a cool room.

Our third game was at 7:30 p.m. and, as luck would have it, we had to play the same team who beat us in the first game, GFC from Graham, Texas and did we get our revenge! to the tune of 12 to 1: a sweet victory. Lionel Schulz hurled another outstanding game, his third one, allowing 1 run, 5 hits, no walks and 3 strikeouts.

Leading hitters included Robert Simmons with 3 singles, Randy Christian, a double and a single, Jerry Zaboj nik, Jeff Burton and Kenny Butts, all earned 2 singles a piece. Jim Wallis (a draftee) made a single and a sacrifice hit and Rick Fountain had a single. Paul Bartos, Ida and Lionel's son, who was one of our draftees, didn't get a hit, but made several outstanding plays in the field and we enj oyed Paul and his friend, Johnny Malley, playing and keeping us out in this tournament.

By winning, we had to come back on Sunday morning, July 1st at 9 a.m, and play the GSI team from Dallas. Sorry to report we got beat by a score of 8 to 4 because we weren't awake in the first inning; our errors allowed 5 unearned runs and that was the game. Lionel Schulz hurled his fourth game, and he should have won on his performance because he allowed only 4 hits, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. At bat, we, too, were asleep because we only garnered 3

hits, 2 sacrifice hits and a base-on-balls. Kerry Goad blasted a homerun into the win and also had a sacrifice. Ken Stubbs had a single and a sacrifice hit, and Rick Fountain made a single hit.

There were 5 teams left in the tournament, so it wasn't too bad a finish considering we only had 7 of our regular players playing plus Ken Stubbs, Robert Simmons and Jim Wallis from the Billy Perdue's Paint team and Paul Bartos and Johnny Malley. Several of our players had vacations or other plans which did not enable them to play: We are most grateful for the draftees who Played with our team; had we had our regular team, I feel we could have finished 3rd or 4th or possibly second. We had lots of fun playing anyway.

There was no game Tuesday, July 3 due to the holiday and we were scheduled to play Thursday, July 5th in our Richardson League.

Friday, July 6th, we were scheduled to motor to Stephenville, Texas for another tournament which started Saturday, morning, July 7th. We always look forward to this tournament because it is always a favorite with our team. The results of these games and also our league games will be submitted in my next article.

LODGE NO 178, LONGVIEW 1 wish to thank all the people I had called on to help in any way with the District III Youth Achievement Day; namely, Kitchen Chairperson and Co-Chairperson Billy Jack and Leslie Lipe, Youth Leader Floyd Snider and Assistant Youth Leader Edd Kane and all the other people who worked or brought desserts. Thanks for responding in a cordial and fraternal way. It's nice to know that so many adults will respond when called on, to help our youths to have their day.

The people of this East Texas community can be very proud of the people who were our judges for that day. The judges are not SPJST members.

This was the first district activity this lodge hosted, and it was rewarding to hear so many positive comments. Many of the people attending that day knew very little about our SPJST. I'll pass some comments on to you. "Those young people were there all day long, and all

8 of them behaved so well." "They didn't even get restless." "The parents and the children work so closely together." "I wish our organization had a program like SPJST." "Those parents take time out for their children."

We were glad to see SPJST Curator Otto Hanus and his lovely wife, Maltilda, State Youth Director Dorothy Massey, District Director Sid Pokladnik, Publication Committee Chairman Edward Mazanec and his wife, District Youth Counselor Ed Kamas, District 2nd Vice President Henry Breitkreutz and wife, District Treasurer Albert Banik and wife, Rosemarie, District Secretary Miss Charlotte Banik, Editor Rudy Sefcik and wife, Maxine, plus all the other fine brothers, sisters and friends who we have become acquainted with throughout the years. Thanks to all the people who braved the gas shortage to come to this YAD. Come visit us again!

Monsignor Edward Shopka, who gave the invocation, used to have a parish in Vernon, Texas, therefore, he is familiar . with our organization.

Needless to say, he enjoyed the children and their achievements very much. Mayor Tommie Carlisle alSo took time out to welcome the people to Longview. Both Mayor Carlisle and Monsignor Shopka have very demanding schedules, and we wish to thank them both for taking time out to be with our youths.

133, SAN ANTONIO

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio was held June 17, at the hall located at 1505 S. Gevers St. President Emil Matula convened the meeting at 2 p.m., and led the membership in the pledge of allegiance; also a moment of silence was held for all the deceased members of our lodge, and especially remembering Sister Ruby Holly and Bro. Edward Lukasik who recently passed away.

All officers were present with the exception of Vice-President Bill Mares who is visiting in London, England.

Bro. James Kostelnik was appointed as acting vice-president for the meeting. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Bro. Dominic Netek and were accepted as read; also the treasurer's report as given by

Sister Viola Mazac was accepted without any corrections.

Bro. Kleprlik is doing fine at the Nix Hospital. In behalf of the membership, we all want to wish him a speedy recovery. Bro. Jaroslav Kleprlik is considered, by the membership, with a lot of respect for his dedication to our lodge and the many constructive ideas that he recommends. We also will miss him at the meetings for a short time; we do hope that, in the near future, he will be able to be at the meetings. To the other members who are confined to, the hospital or at home, our thoughts are always with you, and wish you a speedy recovery. We hope to see all of you off the sick report and see you at the meeting. A message to all the members : remember when you feel that you have been forgotten, (and we all have moments such as that), the SPJST Lodge No. 133 always remembers you. If any of us can be of any help to any member, remember to call on us as your sisters and brothers.

We all have heard the word CONSERVATION, time and again!

But it seems now that the time has come where we can not just talk about it, but we must put it into practice. Not only at the gas stations but at home and anywhere that we can.

We were having a discussion on the forthcoming convention in 1980. No one dared to make any kind of predictions, on the cost. We all know that it will cost more money. Since the convention is less then one year away I believe that it would be a good idea to think about what we can do to hold down the cost of the operations in our SPJST Organization. Since the convention is just around the corner, and we will have to have our recommendations to the By-Laws Committee soon,j ust, for a starter, this one could be considered: Why not amend the By-Laws and instead of having a convention every four years let us have it every six years. All officers would also be elected for the term of six years. In the period of twelve years we would have two conventions instead of three, therefore, a savings of one complete convention, which, in itself, is a lot of money. We have been very fortunate in the past to have elected competent officers ; they have given a good account of themselves. I am_ sure that the SPJST would progress j ust as well on a six-year term. This is just one of the many thoughts that come to a member's mind. Anyone who has any suggestions that could help the SPJST in cost savings, should feel obligated to bring it up for discussion. It might not sound

very important to you, but your idea in conjunction with the other members' ideas on the same subject could very well develop into a very important savings.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON

I am sorry that I have no knews of our dances because I was out of town for two weekends. I am sure both dances were enjoyed by our patrons as usual.

Sister Emily Bily, also a Birthday Club Sister, had a pleasant 7-day vacation in company with her sister, Valerie Koh to visit Emily's brother at Bay Shore, New York. Christopher showed both sisters a great time taking them all over to see whatever possible. Both girls were so occupied having a good time, that they forgot about their husbands at home, but enjoyed telling them of their pleasant experiences. I know, after hearing about their trip, they won't stay behind next time: Brother Gus and his spouse, Ann Urbanovsky, returned from their 10-day trip through our lovely country.

They left Houston June 19th for Hot Springs, Arkansas to attend the outdoor Spectacular and a pleasant boat ride on Lake Hamilton. They drove through the North Mountains and the West Mountains. Their next stop was at the Dog Patch USA and Marble Falls Resort. For three days they were in Branson, Missouri to see the outdoor drama "Shepherd of The Hills"; also, they enjoyed the live country music, "The Presleys" and the museum plus a day in the "Silver Dollar City." The following three days, they visited Eureka Springs, Arkansas where they saw the "Great Passion Play". This is the greatest presentation of its kind in the world with 4,400 seats in this Amphitheater.

Near by is the statue of "Christ of the Ozarks," a huge statue that is 7 stories high and a span of 65 feet. They also visited the Milas Mountains, Musical Museum, and the Elizabeth Catholic Church where you enter through the ball tower. Then they dined in the beautiful Eureka Inn. Coming home they took the scenic winding route of Highway 23 from Eureka Springs to Texarkana and arrived at home June 28th, with pleasant memories of their trip. Both of them work on the Social Night Committee.

Dear Readers. I hope you will forgive

Wednesday, July 11, 1979 me for writing about my activities over the weekend. Sister Pearl Hanka and I were so lucky to be invited by our good friends Ed and Ellen Miculka to spend Thursday evening through Sunday with them. Thursday evening they treated us to a Chinese dinner, which was a treat and afterward we played Forty-Two in their lovely home until wee hours and spent the night. At eight in the morning, Royal and Laura Bell Warnasch arrived in their van and the six of us headed for the beautiful hilly country around LBJ Lake where so many retired couples live in leisure.

Ed and Ellen have a lovely comfortable lake home facing the lake with a large boat tied at their pier.

When we arrived and settled down Ed took all of us out in the boat, about 20 miles out to get a dip in the warm water of the lake where we splashed around over an hour and enjoyed a bottle of champagne. With the cool wind blowing in our faces, we were back at the house in no time to enjoy a nice dinner. The lake is a beautiful sight, it lies among tall hills in a valley with numerous homes built around the shoreline, and many very elaborate ones.

Saturday, after a hearty breakfast prepared by Laura Bell, we all got in the van and headed to Royal's deer lease, a place about 70 miles away, and we stopped here and there to admire the beautiful hilly country. Ed was telling us about a stream that has fish galore and in no time Royal slopped at rocky bottom stream flowing from one side under the road to the other side and clear as a mirror.

We all got out and, due to my curiosity, I don't know but I wanted to know if the water is cool as it looked. I just got a little bit too close and Lord behold, whoops! my feet slid down on the slimy rocks and I submerged up to my ears screaming for help. Royal was on the other side of the road and also made a false move and fell down but missed the water. Ed, a step behind me, jumped and grabbed my hand and, with Royal's help, they pulled me out of the water soaking wet.

Everything happened so quickly that I didn't realize the danger. I was lucky not being hurt. Afterward we had a good laugh (me wrapped in a blanket), we arrived at the deer lease. While Ellen and the two boys went about two miles, Pearl and Laura Bell stripped me and were drying my clothes on the line; when they came back, everything was back to normal.

On that same day we travelled about 150 miles through the hilly country and came back with bushels of tree-ripen-

9 ed peaches. We had another dip in the lake and a bottle of champagne, stayed out under the moonlight sky and millions of stars to enjoy the cool breeze.

Sunday morning we picked more peaches from the neighbor's trees that are loaded with fruit and breaking the limbs. We departed about 10:30 to come home. It was a delightful weekend spent with five friends.

Thanks to Ed and Ellen for their hospitality. Royal and Laura Bell for the pleasant ride and, of course, thanks to my roommate Pearl.

Sister Frances Walla, after a lengthy illness, passed away Monday, June 25th and was laid to rest Wednesday, June 27th. Sister Frances Walla, at the age of 84 years, performed many good deeds to her fellow members and to Lodge 88. She was a devoted Birthday Club Sister; not one time would she arrive without donating her beautiful handmade gifts for the benefit of the lodge. Funeral services were held at the Earthman Funeral Home with Rev. Junek officiating. Interment was in Rest Haven Cemetery. The grandsons served their grandmother as pallbearers. We extend our sincere sympathy to the surviving family.

May she rest in peace.

Dear Members: We had our regular lodge meeting Sunday, June 3rd, starting at 2 p.m. with president of the lodge, Brother Ricky Benner, calling the meeting to order.

Roll call of officers showed all were present.

We had reading of the minutes from the May meeting; they were adopted as read by Secretary Martinets.

One new member, Linda Stroud, was accepted into our lodge. Welcome into our midst, Linda!

All the chairmen of the various committees gave their reports for the month of May and all showed good progress. A report was given by those who had charge of the annual picnic that we had the last Sunday in May. All departments showed that a profit was made.

At this time, I would like to apologize, to my fellow members of our lodge, for not having a letter or report from our lodge in the Vestnik

for the last two months. I spent eight days in King's Daughters Hospital the first days in May. For about three weeks I was not able to do anything. I am doing better now and hope to improve as time goes on. I want to thank all the lodge members and friends for the visits, cards and well wishes during my convalescence at home; my wife and myself, had the pleasure to have the company, one afternoon, of President and Mrs. Nick Morris and son, Michael. Thank you again for your visit.

Some time ago everyone was complaining about the wet weather, but right at present, we could use a good 2-inch rain.

I am writing this on the 28th of June.

It will be held at the National Hall, 3316 Roberts Cutoff Road, at 2 p.m. ‘_ Since assessments are due at this time, the secretary, Brother John Murphy will be at the hall at 12:30 p.m. for the convenience of those who want to pay before the meeting begins.

The kind ladies are asked to please wring ,pastries to go with the meal which is furnished by the local chapter. All those good pastries are hard to resist and the ladies do go out of their way to bring a variety.

Our sympathy goes out to the family of Bernard Polk who passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 28th. He was a member of Lodge 92 and had only been retired for a short while from Swift and Company as Comptroller and auditor.

I hope all of you can attend the meeting even though we do have the odd and even gas rationing. Also, this will give everyone, who has not seen the newly-remodeled National Hall, an opportunity to see it.

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON ANNUAL LODGE PICNIC Dear Members And Friends Everywhere: Plans have been in the making for this year's annual lodge picnic for some months now. It is scheduled for Sunday, July 22nd.

The premises and Seaton Star Hall will be open at 11 a.m. Events will get underway at 12:30 p.m. with a Flag-raising Ceremony by the Temple Marine Color Guard and the Seaton Brass Band. This year, the foOd and various dance groups will depict somewhat of an international flavor.

Entertainment will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. to include the Marusak Family Singers from Ennis, Seaton Brass Band, Czech Beseda Dancers of Dallas, German Folk Dancers from Cameron, Mexican Dancers from Killeen, and the Taylor HS Hi-Steppers; hot air balloons, antique car display, variety of foods (barbecue on bun, sausage on a stick, nachos, and pizza), pastry booth, refreshments, children's games and amusements (pony rides and ball throw); auction, (with Mead Miller and Dan Forney as auctioneers); adult games, beer garden, and farm equipment display.

A free dance will be held from 6 to 10, with music by the Vrazel Polka Band.

An entertainment preview, with all dancers in costume, will take place , at the J.C. Penney Court 'area in the Temple Mall on Saturday, July 21st, beginning at 1 p.m. All members of the lodge or anyone else from near or far having Czech costumes (kroj e) are asked to attend this preview and the picnic the next day.

Friends, and especially Lodge 47 members, the success of this venture,

as will all our activities, depends on your help, contributions and cooperation. We are extending special requests for donations of pastry, prizes for the game stand, and the auction. (See listing below of those in charge who you should contact for details). This is too large an undertaking for the committee to contact everyone in person, so.

FOLK DANCE CLINIC JULY 14 Sokol Karel Havlicek Borovsky Ennis, Texas 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Fee - $5.00 per person Bro. Fred Kala, a well-known folk dance instructor from the Chicago area, will teach a one-day clinic on Czechoslovakian Folk Dancing. The clinic will be held Saturday, July 14,

1979, at Sokol Karel Havlicek in Ennis, Texas. The introduction of new steps and new dances will be the main purpose of the clinic.

Bro. Kala leads a group of up to one hundred people who have traveled to Canada, New York, St. Louis, and Milwaukee to perform dances. They also perform often in the Chicago area and have appeared on television. Some of the dances performed by this group are Eagansky Tanec (Mountaineers' Dance), Chadska Pilsen, Horeeansky Czardas (this will be performed at the 1981 Sokol Stet), and the HAnatka Beseda.

The clinic is sponsored by the Southern District of the American Sokol Organization, in conjunction with the Czech Cultural Society and its member organizations. These include the C.S.A., K.J.T., K.J.Z.T., R.V.O.S., S.P.J.S.T., S.V.P.S., W.F.L.A., Sokol, Catholic Czech Club, and the Circle of Czech Ladies.

FEATURES TUMIS - SCHLEIDER WEDDING St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Houston was the setting Saturday, April 21, 1979 for the marriage of Patricia Ann Tumis and Robert Lee Schleider.

Father Jim Rainosek officiated at the double ring ceremony.

Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Sidon John Tumis and Mae Schleider; all of Houston.

The bride selected a gown of SataDeau combined with silken Venise lace. A pattern of the lace appliques enhanced the bodice that featured a wedding band neckline. The long full sleeves were finished at the wrist in deep appliqued cuffs that closed at the wrist in buttons and loops. A lace Juliet cap held her veiling of white illusion that was outlined in matching lace to a finger tip length.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Schleider She carried a cascade of white gardenias, baby's breath and stephanotis centered around two white orchids.

Rita Tumis, sister-in-law of the bride, was matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Darlene Tumis, Sue Miller and Cindy Schleider.

Paul Paradowski served as best man. Groomsmen were John Tumis, Harvey Tumis and John Schleider.

Ushers were Robert Wall and James Worsham.

The houseparty consisted of Mary Jenkins, Marie Coffield, Elizabeth Hermis, Carolyn Kubeczka, Ellen Cessna and Janet Schleider.

A reception and dinner was held at SPJST Stefanik Lodge No. 142, Houston, followed by a wedding dance at 6 p.m. Margaret and Charles Kadlecek led the grand march.

The couple honeymooned in the Smokey Mountains, Tennessee.

The bride is a secretary employed by the Walgreen Company. The bridegroom is a route salesman employed

MISS KALINA TOURS EUROPE WITH COLLEGE TEXTILES GROUP Peggy Kalina, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Kalina Jr. of Wharton, recently returned from a trip to Europe with a group of 19 girls, teachers and chaperones from the Department of Clothing and Textiles of Texas Tech University, Lubbock. This was a Fashion Field Studies Trip taken May 13-31 to Rome, Florence, Paris and London.

The group left May 13 from Dallas to New York and changed flights and flew on to Rome. In Rome, they visited Gucci- The Famous leather manufacturer and Daleo- an exclusive shoe designer of custom made shoes. They were shown how the different leather goods and shoes are made. They visited the Coleseum, the Forum, the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican museum.

They also attended Pope John Paul's public audience on St. Peter's Square and were fortunate to have seats on the front row. They also visited Fendi Sisters- fur designer. There they tried on some fabulous fur coats.

They stayed in Rome until May 18 at which time they left by motorcoach to Florence, where they ate lunch at Assisi-Basilica of St. Mary of the Angel where St. Francis worshiped and died.

In Florence they visited Pitti Palace to see special exhibits of clothes and jewels of the Medic Family, Dantini Museum and Twintex Textile Mills in Prado, the Salon of Emilio Pucci and attended a special fashion show there.

Also Ferragano- famous shoe designer, Leoning tower of Pisa and other sight seeing attractions. They stayed in Florence until May 22 at which time they were to fly to Paris, but their flight being cancelled, they traveled by train to Paris. That trip took 14 hours.

In Paris, they went on a cruise on the Bateaux Mouche through the city; visited the Institute de Textile in Boulonge, visited designers Courregeo and Yves Saint Laurant, a Panoramic city tour to see the Eiffel Tower, visited Hermes- a famous leather designer and Au Pretemps Depart-

ment Store.

They stayed in Paris until May 26 and then departed to London. Since the first day in London was Sunday, they had a full day tour to Bath and Stonehenge and toured their beautiful countrysides. They went to see the Crown Jewels of Westminister Abbey, visited the La Chasse Fashion Show, the museum of London, the London College of Fashions, St. Paul's Cathedral and went to a Theatre performance of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

They also visited Liberty's- a famous specialty store. Their last night they went to a Shakespeare Tavern Banquet and were also filmed for a television program. They stayed in London until May 31, and left London that day, and flew to Dallas. Peggy then flew in to Houston.

Peggy said it was a trip that was a dream of a lifetime. She learned much about different fashions, manufacturers, mills and designers and each student received nice gifts from almost all of them.

Peggy is back in Lubbock at Texas Tech where she will attend the first summer session of school to finish college in July. She will finish in three years. She is a senior at Texas Tech where she is majoring in Home Economics. She was on the Dean's list last semester with a 4.0 grade point average.

Peggy was hired last week by Sealy High School where she will teach Homemaking I, Homemaking II and a child development course. She will also be in charge of setting up a day care center that the school wants to start.

WINS HOUSTON CHRONICLE SPELLING BEE

Miss Michelle Faldik didn't know the meaning of the words egregious and quotidian when a Houston Chronicle Spelling Bee Judge first pronounced them back in April. But Michelle, 12, a sixth grade student at Spring Oaks Junior High School in the Spring Branch Independent School District spelled them correctly anyway. That was good enough to win the 15th annual spelling bee: a trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the

Michelle Faldik National Spelling Championship in June, a set of encyclopedias and a pen set.

Michelle competed with 192 other youths in Washington, D.C. and came in 42nd place. Congratulations to you, Michelle, for such an outstanding accomplishment and honor.

Michelle is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Faldik and has twin sisters, Debbie and Sharon, 17 months old, and all of the family are members of Lodge 88 where Michelle is a member of our youth club.

The youth club had a yard cleaning contest after the meeting.

July 8th the club planned a swimming party at the West Pladium.

July 15 is our annual Lodge 6 picnic.

Dinner will be served at 11 a.m.; games will be played at 1 p.m.; cake walk, fish pond and auction will be held at 4 p.m. The youth club will be in charge of the game stand, cake walk and fish pond. We need items for our games, cakes for cake walk, also will need all of the youth and lodge members to help us. WE NEED ALL OF YOU TO PARTICIPATE. Come by or call me that you will work. We will be looking or hearing from you.

Don't forget the July 11th program at the rest home.

Camp will be July 24 through 27th at Val Verde. I hope all of you can go.

The youth club planned a Six Flags trip in the fall. We will also have a booth at the Westfest, we will need workers again and we will need pastries, including kolache, etc.

We had one guest, Casey Kulcak, at the May meeting. We had two guests, Brent Kaiser and Stacy Arnold, in June.

Dear Members and Friends, After our meeting on Monday, April 5th, we went and played Putt-Putt in Fort Worth and then we went out to eat. Several won free tickets playing Putt-Putt. Everyone had a lot of fun.

We called a special meeting for Thursday, June 21st and we decided to change our monthly meeting to the first Thursday of each month.

Dear Readers, June 26th, 1979, the District VII Youth Club had a day of fun at Landa Park in New Braunfels. This was our annual district outing and everyone had a great time. When the Robstown members got there, everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch which they haa brought with them. Afterward Mrs. Pavliska bought swimming tickets for all the members. We went swimming in the cool spring-fed pool and in the regular olympic-size pool. Many enjoyed the bumper cars at the small amusement park within the park. Others enjoyed the paddle boats and the glass bottom boat. About 4 p.m. everyone enjoyed a cold watermelon. Each of us had a great time and cannot wait for the next time the club's District VII can get together again, which will be at YAD Sunday, July 22nd.

bus. We had a very nice time. Many from our lodge won.

Dear Members and Friends : We held Our regular monthly meeting July 2nd at 8 p.m. Josef Morris, our president , called the meeting to order. tie !hen asked Michael Morris to lead us in the pledge of allegiance and club motto.

Sherry Skrabanek called the roll and !here were 13 members present. She also read the minutes of the previous meeting and these were approved as read.

We had a treasurer's report from Dianne Skrabanek.

Visitors were Vice President of the Supreme Lodge, Bernard Gebala and Donna Williams.

Mr. Gebala then installed the new officers for the new youth year. They are: President Josef Morris, Vice President Gene Skrabanek, Secretary Sherry Skrabanek, Treasurer Missy Coufal, Reporter David Pechal and Sergeant-at-Arms Glenn Hutka.

Mrs. Skrabanek handed out camp forms to those who are eligible to go to camp. You have ',A) have them in by July 8th. Camp will be for the juniors July 18-31: and teens July 31st through August 31:(1.

HAISLER REUNION The Haisler reunion will be held at the American Legion Hall in Caldwell, Texas on Sunday, July 15th. Everyone is asked to come and bring a basket lunch. Ice, tea, plates, etc. will be furnished again.

Theresa received 1st place in three entries and Janice won in two entries.

She then handed out everyone a point sheet and an SPJST youth rule book to help keep up with your points.

We also discussed the annual picnic which will be held July 22nd. July 19th we will pack prizes for the fish pond at the hall at 7 p.m.; also on the 19th and 20th of July, we will have work day at the hall which will begin at 6:30 . p.m.

We decided not to have a social for the month of July because of the picnic.

In the month of July, we did not have any birthdays.

Door prize winners for the juniors was Christi Wiggint on and for the eens was Dianne Skrabanek.

Mrs. Skrabanek then reminded us. to pay our dues.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of the Novy Tabor SPJST Lodge No. 17 at Caldwell, Texas in behalf of our membership wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother ALOIS (LOUIS) DUBCAK, who died June 14, 1979 in a Caldwell hospital following a brief illness.

Brother Dubcak was born February 14, 1897 in the Snook community, the son of the late George Dubcak and Rosie Ondrasek Dubcak. Brother Dubcak had lived in Burleson County all his life. He was a farmer and cotton gin operator. He operated the New Tabor Cotton Gin with his brother-inlaw, Joe Novacek for 27 years.

He was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church, the SPJST Lodge No. 17 of New Tabor and the RVOS of New Tabor.

He was married to Lydie Matej ka on January 12, 1921. She preceded him in death October 4, 1956. Also preceding him in death was one infant daughter, two brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are one son, Louis Dennis Dubcak of Freeport; one daughter, Mrs. A. C. (Lillie Mae) Schmidt of Caldwell; two granddaughters, Karen and Sharon Schmidt of Caldwell; and one sister, Mrs. Joe (Antonio) Novacek of Caldwell.

Funeral services' were held June 16, with the Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating. Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

To the loved ones and to our beloved brother, we wish eternal rest and may his memory be honored unto eternity.

Brother Horak was educated in the Brenham schools and he was a retired cot tonmill worker. He was confined to a wheelchair after suffering from a stroke over 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl (Swierkowski) Horak; 2 sons and 2 daughters-in-law; 2 daughters and 2 sons-in-law; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother FRANK MORAVEC, who passed away at 1:25 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 1979, in a Brenham hospital.

Brother Moravec was born the son of the late Frank Moravec, Sr., and Anna Tlustos Moravec on March 31, 1899, in Zubi Morava, Czechoslovakia.

Brother Moravec was a former resident of Lyons and New Tabor and moved to Somerville in 1943. He was a retired employee of the A.T.&S.F. Treating with over 41 years of service.

He was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church, a member of the Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks Lodge No. 1096 for over 25 years, a 50-year member of the SPJST Lodge No. 17 of New Tabor.

He was married to Miss Milady Ondrasek June 26, 1923 in New Tabor.

Funeral .-services were held on Tuesday, May 22, at 2 p.m. in the Caldwell Brethren Church, with Rev. Albert L. Michalik officiating. Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery under the direction of the Strickland Funeral Home of Somerville.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Milady 0. Moravec of Somerville; three daughters, Mrs. Gladys West of Bryan, Mrs. Martha Jones of Dallas and Mrs. Mildred Plant of Bryan; three sons, Franklin Moravec of Carlsbad, California, Edwin Moravec of Lyons and George Moravec of Somerville; a sister, Mrs. Martha John of Dallas and three brothers, Henry Moravec and Joe Moravec, both of West , and Emil Moravec of Sherman. 1Ie is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a number of nti,eces and nephews and other relatives.

He Was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, a daughter, Lydia Moravec and two sons, Anton Moravec and Ernest Moravec.

Active pallbearers were Bobby Schoppe, Ernest (Buba) Schoppe, Chris Discher, Dennis Urbanovsky, Wayne Hobbs, and James West.

Honorary pallbearers were Wilbur Barton, Johnnie Werney, Sam Barkley and Mib Mill.

MRS. AGNES BLAZEK,

who passed away, Sunday, July 1, 1979 at her home in the Red Ranger community at the age of 86.

Sister Blazek was born in Seaton. She moved from Fort Bend County to Temple in 1914. Sister 'Blazek, a housewife, had lived in Bell County most of her life. Her husband, Joe Blazek, died in 1963.

Funeral services were held at 2 Tuesday, July 3, 1979, in Seaton Brethren Church, with the Rev. Milton Maly officiating. Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery. Hewett Funeral Home was in charge.

Survivors include a son, Joe A. Blazek of Temple, and a brother, Frank Poboril also of Temple.

who was born in Dallas, Texas February 25, 1907 and entered eternal rest 23rd June 1979 at the age of 73.

Services were held Tuesday at the Alamo Chapels, with the Rev. Daniel Hernandez officiating with interment to follow in Fort Sam National Cemetery.

(Courtesy of Texas Farmers Union) One of the state's leading general farm organizations which represents principally the family farmer has acknowledged District 36 Rep. Dan Kubiak's voting record as one of the best out of the recently adjourned 66th session.

Kubiak was one of 28 out of 150 House members who had a perfect or near perfect score on seven issues relating to the agricultural legislation in the state legislature. The record was published in the official Texas Farmers Union publication, THE TEXAS FAMILY FARMER. Among the issues scored was a bill to provide a state program of guaranteed loans for young farmers entering agriculture, tax relief for farmers based on productivity rather than market values, and an unsuccessful bill that would have prohibited alien ownership of Texas farm land. The state guaranteed loan program for young farmers, the Family Farm Security Act, will appear on a November referendum ballot to allow issuance of revenue bonds for funding of the act.

"It was a tough, special interest session," said Jay Naman, President of TFU. "It oftentimes took a strong, conscientious commitment to stand strongly with the 'little guy', and we are pleased and proud that Rep. Kubiak did just that."

V roce 1970 se stal laureatem svetove souteie v holandskem Kerkrade, kde v konkurenci 180 orchestra z 18 zemi ziskal titul Svetov9 mistr amatersk9ch dechov9ch orchestra. Pied dvema roky byla dechova kapela Amati ye Spojen9ch statech, odkud si pfivetla Cestne obeanstvi mesta Cedar Rapids.

Repertoar tohoto amaterskeho orchestru je sestavo yan pfedev gim ze skladeb soueasnjrch autora, nechybi v nem vgak ani apravy del autos vain hudby.
