FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK In this issue is a report from SL President N.A. Morris pertaining to the status of the information he has received so far from the lodges and their history. Please read it carefully, especially you officers of the lodges he names. ** Your editor had a brief conversation with SL Vice-President Bernard Gebala and he requested that all of our sales representatives be advised, once again, that the NEW RATES from the NEW rate books must be utilized effective July 1st, 1979. If a sales representative has not exchanged their rate book, they should mail the old one in to the Supreme Lodge.

Brother Gebala stated that. in all of his and the State Field Managers' travels, all of the districts, lodges, SRs, ctc. were very cordial and eager to learn more about the new rates. DO NOT USE THE OLD RATE BOOKS!

He also stated that many of our sales representatives travelled great distances to exchange their rate books; as an example: Sister Angeline Kristinek of Lubbock - 320 miles (round trip); Sister Dorothy Hoelscher of Garden City - 300 miles and then Rowena, Brothers Charles Sottek 100 miles and Jerry Tomanek - 60 miles, etc. He reported that they stated that they felt they owed it to the SP,1ST Society. THAT is what we can call FRATERNALISM especially with the gasoline shortage! **

medical service which would prolong a loved one's life, even if only for a day?

And then the bills add up.

Therefore, if you are thinking that you are insurance poor, think again. Do a little arithmetic for yourself to see how your own life insurance compares with the estimated sum that will be needed in your own case. Then you can decide if you are "life insurance poor."

No one ever says he is "savings account poor," or -real estate poor," or "savings bond poor" --- yet none of these forms of savings offers you the special feature of "Life Insurance With A Heart" --- which is that if you die, your savings plan is completed in full for you.

Yes, people can be "lite insurance, poor," but only by having too little life insurance, and too many people are "life insurance poor" for that reason right today.

It is amazing how much life insurance people say they have before they die and how little they have when death occurs.

The solution to the problem is 1) Buy as much SPJST Life Insurance as you can possibly pay for. 2) Never cash in any life insurance that you now have. 3) Increase your SPJST insurance whenever your finances will permit. Then you will end up at retirement or at death financially healthy.

SUPREME LODGE

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE SPJST History: An Update Dear Members: Since my last report to you on the subject, I wish to report on the current status of the lodge histories received.

The following list shows the lodge histories that have been received as of 19 June 1979. I have also indicated those items that the various lodges need to send me in addition to the histories.

Please remember that I am still shooting for a target date of 1 January 1980 for receiving and completing the histories of the local lodges. There will be a lot of material still to be compiled in addition to the lodge histories, but if the lodges can get me their information by the first of the year, that will be a big help.

As stated before, if we do not receive your lodge's history, about the only thing that we can include in the final book version will be the name, number, date of organization, and a list of the charter members. In some instances this will be very brief. Right now, my biggest problem is gathering information on those lodges that existed at one time but which either disbanded or merged later.

If your lodge is not listed above, that means that nothing has been received from your lodge.

Many of the lodges listed above have long since either disbanded or been merged with other lodges. In most such cases, all we have here is a list of the charter members, date and place of organization (or chartering), and date of merger or disbanding. If any of you have any information on these lodges other than this, please send it to this office; otherwise the information on these lodges will be very scant and brief.

In a few instances I have noted what additional information or pictures are needed. All of the above lodges have still to send me a picture of their 1980 officers, but this will understandably come later.

As an observation, doing the research on all of these lodges, both current and disbanded or merged, was really an experience. In many instances, we had to determine what counties some of the more obscure lodges had been located in. It really gives you a good picture of what once existed throughout dozens of communities in Texas insofar as the SPJST was concerned. This portion of the history has been most tedious and time-consuming. Our thanks go out to those who have thus far submitted their histories, but there are still a goodly number not on the above list. Please study the list carefully and if additional information or pictures are needed, the lodge presidents should see to it that these are supplied, probably working through the person designated to compile the lodge history.

Later on in the summer or early fall, I will have still another update giving the status of the chapter on our lodges. In the meantime, I will be working on other phases of the final product.

Remember this guide: Other than skeletal information on your lodge, as I have mentioned before, if you don't send it, it can't be included in the book.

Touching on some other unrelated areas, I would make the observations that this past "spring" was one of the most unusual in many years. Farmers have been particularly hard hit by the excessive rains and flooding was not unusual. Many farmers did not have a chance to plant small grains such as milo and here in Central Texas that is one of the principal money crops.

Comparatively few acres of corn have been planted. For a while it appeared that they would not even have a chance to get in their cotton and those that did manage to plant it saw very small plants sitting in water for a while. Now that the cotton has been cultivated there appears to be a chance. What milo was planted will probably be attacked by the midge and so it goes....

Another area that is becoming of increasing concern almost by the day is the availability and price of motor fuel, especially gasoline and diesel. In our travels here out of the Supreme Lodge to various areas, especially on weekends, we have been "stranded" because not enough service stations were open selling gas. The few that were had long lines of irate motorists lined up and in some instances, after you sat in line for thirty minutes or an hour, someone came along carrying a sign stating, "Last Car To Get Gas". As luck would have it, that last car to get gas was just two or three cars ahead of ours. And if you were successful in finally reaching that precious destination at the pump you received the bad news about the price being in the mid or upper 80s for the price of a gallon of gasoline. As I stated at the 183 chartering in Burleson, I don't know the answer to the current dilemma, but I am disappointed that .those who I feel should have the answer don't seem to know any more about it than the next man. And when you listen to the various opinions on television talk shows and debates on the problem, everyone seems to be placing the blame on another segment of the industry.

Thisis frustrating and exasperating, to say the least. In the meantime, the hapless consumer is caught in the middle with nobody having any explanation for anything - only excuses and he feels totally helpless. Then you stop and think that this, the mightiest and most powerful nation on the globe, is being brought to its knees by a thought thinks that we are simply at the mercy of those who have. We have long heard about the "have" and the "have not" nations. Are we now among the "have nots"? Since our entire industry and mobility of our population rests on gasoline, it would appear that we are

headed for the "have not" column.

Whatever the future brings, we will do our best to adjust to it and live with it. We may have to make some changes in the way we operate. If the present something is going to have to be curtailed - not because we WANT to, but because we will be COMPELLED to. We have observed that our network of interstate highways has become less congested in recent weeks. Probably the most frustrating experience is to see a service station pumping gas with about two cars waiting and the attendant putting up signs saying "Closed at 4 p.m." The time is 4:05 and the red light indicating a near-empty tank is on, so you keep driving, looking, hoping, and praying How much gasoline do you have in your car tank and how far do you intend to go on your next trip and is your license plate even or odd-numbered?

This now has special significance for motorists in Dallas, Tarrant, Harris, Brazoria, Collin, Liberty, Ellis, and Montgomery Counties. There are sizeable numbers of SPJST members in these counties. After the price reaches a dollar a gallon, the supply will probably be adequate. In the meantime, I hope Texans don't emulate the actions of some of the people in Levittown, Pennsylvania.

Incidentally, as this is being dispatched (Tuesday, June 26th), most areas could use a good rain. Ironic, isn't it, after all the recent heavy rains? The top of the earth is crusted and parched.

Today, a light shower fell in Temple, but areas to the northeast, north, and northwest have received larger amounts.

AN INVITATION TO DISTRICT II YAD Dear Members and Readers of District II: Sunday, July 8th, District II will hold its YAD at Lodge No. 18 in Elgin. It will start at 2 p.m. There will be talent, craft and royalty judging.

In the royalty judging this year, we have eight young ladies competing for district queen and five young men competing for district king.

The youth club members have worked hard this past year in preparing for this special day. The day is especially for them, but they do need your support.

Just knowing you made a special trip to see their work, will make them feel like winners.

Plans are also made for the District II fall meeting at Lodge 29, Taylor on August 12th. Details to be given in later issues.

LODGE NO. 180, BURLESON

Our June meeting opened with Brother Bobby Smajstrla leading the pledge of allegiance.

President Dennis Barabas held a moment of silence for all the sick and departed ones.

Since the meeting was rained out the month before, all of the previous minutes were read and approved. The officers then gave their reports as follows: The financial report was given

by Brother Leroy Hampton in place of Mydell Grochoske who was in Las Vegas on vacation with her husband Louis; the trustees' report was given by Brother Bobby Smajstrla. He reported, because of ill health, Sandra Barabas and Oscar Hoerig, both, had to resign.

The members then voted and approved two new trustees. They are Brother Joe Hurtik and Timothy Russell. Welcome!

Afterward we gave welcome to two ladies who came from Lodge 183, Mid-Cities. Sisters Betty Hlavaty and Irene Greenlees came to give their thanks for letting Lodge 180, house their chartering. They expressed their thanks by giving, to the kitchen, some large cooking utensils. All our members gave their thanks.

The lodge welcomes five new adults and two youth as members Robert N. Bransom, Roy L. Franks, Charlotte Psencik, James W. Smith, Sr. and Albert Moline. The two youth members are Charles Edward Moline and Christopher Moline.

We would like to tell everyone of our July 3rd dance which we had planned with the Casuals playing for us for the first time. (This, of course, will be in the

past when this letter will be published).

Our next meeting is July 5th at 7:30 p.m. See you then.

LODGE NO. 189, BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION

Dear Members: Our June meeting was poorly attended due to various unavoidable reasons. Our secretary, Claudia Novosad, conducted the meeting. Most of our business discussion was related to our July 15th picnic.

The next meeting is July 8th. Please plan to be present. Let's support our officers and special committees who have worked hard to make our picnic a success. Some of the final details must be worked out at this meeting.

In behalf of Lodge No. 189, I want to invite our friends and members of our Society to be with us at this picnic for a day of fun and fellowship. A special invitation to our Supreme Lodge officers. The location appears in the SPJST Calendar.

LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE

Dear Members: Our monthly meeting was held Sunday, June 10th, 1979 at the Grant Building with President Frank Zabransky presiding.

Kim Drozd and Denise Vasek led those present in the pledge to the flag.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the last meeting and they were approved.

Youth Leader Erwin Holy gave a report on the youth club.

The members were reminded that any member having information on the history of our lodge to contact one of the officers.

Our annual Family Day in August will be discussed and planned at the next meeting.

Treasurer Gaye Galetka gave her report followed by the refund checks.

The meeting was adjourned.

The youth club presented an entertaining Father's and Mother's Day program consisting of poems and songs.

Several games were played with adult members taking part. It was a lot of fun for all.

The afternoon was spent playing games with refreshments and lunch

being served.

June birthdays honored were for Viola Holy and Marylyn Sevcik who received the cake.

Door prize winners were Adult--Erwin Holy; Youth--Denise Vasek.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 8th at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m. Our August Famil Day will be discussed and planne .

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON CHORAL CLUB

The Seaton Choral Club met Tuesday, June 26th, for their regular rehearsal with the following members present: Willie and Adeline Kohutek, Otto and Matilda Hanus, Annie Jakubec (our talented leader), Mathew and Elsie Cabla, Janet Young, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, Ruby Bolton, Emily Stuteville, Agnes Schiller, Bill and Lillian Kosarek, Georgia Sodek, Anne Krcha (and Anne, we are happy to have you become a regular with us and we hope you will like to sing with us). Clarence and Wanona Sulak, we have missed you and we were happy to see you; don't miss out again - we need you, Henry and Helen Janacek and, boy, did that accordion sound good, Alfred and Martha Klusacek, Dorothy Morris and Viola Chervenka. We missed Frank and Eleonora Spanhel who are on a vacation trip which we hope they are enjoying very much.

We had a great and relaxing time singing those old favorites, both Czech and English, and those of you who didn't attend missed a great evening.

After our singing program we had a short business meeting. We have decided to have a summer vacation until the fourth week in August; to be definite, our next singing night will be Tuesday, Aug. 28th. Dear Members: Vacations or conventions took many of our members away from our monthly meeting. We thank Sister Alfreda Sadecky for taking over the duties of Secretary Salac and also for our Vice President Joe Ondrusek. She was a busy member that night.

The Czech language school was in its second Monday lesson and it was a studious crowd being taught by capable Calvin Chervenka, just outside of the conference room.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved and the committees each gave reports, however, the entertainment meeting will give a full report of its June meeting at the next monthly meeting; hopefully all of the

regulars will be back from faraway places; by the way, mark July 23rd as the monthly meeting date at 7:30 p.m.

The Sunshine Committee sent sympathy cards to Brother Glen Kretsinger who lost his father and to Sister Agnes Trlica who lost a son, Edwin. Get-well cards were sent to Brother Cecil Olsen, Brother Ed Cooper, Brother Chas. Prasifka, Sister Pauline Vrana, Brother John Pokladnik and Sister Jeanne Pool.

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council will meet September 19th. The societies are taking a 3-month vacation.

My! How refreshed the garden looked this morning. About 11/2 inches of rain fell yesterday and I am rushing to get vinegar at Safeway. Cucumbers are what I'm using it for; that is if I can locate my SPJST cookbook for the dill pickle recipe; would you believe, I have 3 stakes of dill blooming in the backyard right now. And about 300 blooms on the cucumbers.

Youth Club reported that YAD at Centerville was a huge success for our lodge. They are planning a family/ friend swimming party for later part of July.

Our next monthly meeting will be Wednesday night, August 1, at 8 p.m. preceded with a barbecue sandwich supper furnished to all youth club members and lodge members by the RVOS. Each family is asked to bring bread, chips and/or pickles. The supper will be at 7:30 p.m. Come out for an evening of food and fellowship.

Dear Members and Friends: June 17, 1979, thirty-five members and two visitors met for the regular monthly meeting at the local lodge hall.

Registration began at 1:50 p.m. and President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m. Patti Tydlacka, flag bearer, led us in the pledge to the flag. The secretary read the minutes from the May meeting.

The financial secretary and the treasurer gave their reports; they were all accepted as read. By carried motion another $5,000 is to be paid on the hall debt in addition to the regular monthly payment.

Joni Floyd was accepted as a new member into the lodge; we welcome her!

Our youth club leader, Sister Nellene Spacek, reported on the great outcome of YAD at Centerville. We are very proud of our youth and, by all means, also our youth leader, who spends a lot of time and patience with these youth members. After our meeting, several of the group talent entries were presented for our entertainment and after viewing them, it is no wonder they came back as winners.

Door prizes were awarded to Rusty Bay, Nellene Spacek and Claude Flippin.

Our next meeting will be July 15. I hope we have another good turnout of members and guests.

LODGE NO. 17, NEW TABOR

Dear Members: On June 24th, 1979, we hosted the joint meeting of Lodges Caldwell No. 7; New Tabor No. 17, Cooks Point No. 116, and Deanville No 120, to discuss the possibility of merging.

Lodge 17 had a low turnout. You really should have been,there. Every member 16 years of age or over will be notified as to when we will vote on

9 merging at least two weeks prior to voting. You cannot vote by proxy and every member in good standing may vote. To be in good standing, you must have your dues paid up-to-date and if a paidup member, you must have paid your annual dues (if your lodge has any) since your policy was paidup. If you were not aware of this then you may go back from the time your policy was paidup and pay up-to-date. Lodge 17's annual dues are only 60 cents per year.

There will also be a notice in the Vestnik at least twice before the membership will vote on this issue.

Sister Pearl Hanka, vice president, called the regular monthly meeting to order at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 13th because our president had not come to the meeting. Thanks, Sister Hanka, for a job well done!

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Sister Rosalee Kostom, secretary, and were accepted as corrected. Sister Kostom said that she was sorry that she was not able to attend the last meeting because she and Tim had company from Czechoslovakia.

The treasurer's report was read by Sister Mary Tilich. It was good to have Sister Lillie Spies, treasurer, back with us after her illness.

It was reported that our dear Sister Frances Walla is not doing too good.

She is still in St. Joseph's Hospital.

Also, Sister Toni Marek is in the Heights Hospital. Sister Marek is the sister of Mary Johnson. We wish you sisters a speedy recovery because we miss you.

Sister Helen Valcik had her birthday in May but she was unable to attend the meeting so Sister Valcik furnished ice cream to all the members to be eaten with their cake. Thanks, Sister Valcik, everyone enjoyed the good ice-cream. It was a treat.

play in the Big D Fast Pitch Tournament at Kiest Park Dallas, Texas with a 2 to 0 victory over the First Presbyterian team behind the 5-hit pitching of Lionel Schulz. He struck out 8 batters and walked 2 men in an outstanding pitching performance.

Hitters were Jeff Burton with a triple and a walk, Rick Fountain with a single, Roy Andrews earned a single, Don Lennox had a walk and a sacrifice and Kenny Skierski made a base-on-balls.

Our next game was Saturday morning, June 16th at 9:30 a.m. against Park and Smyers, the number one team in Texas, who incidentally won this tournament and they beat us by a score of 8 to 0. Roy Andrew allowed 8 runs, 6 hits, one strikeout and 7 base-on-balls.

It's no sin to lose to a team of this calibar; we did enjoy playing the best.

There were no hitters as base runners because their pitcher hurled a perfect game and he was a good one.

We dropped down into the losers' bracket and we played Alamon Restaurant at 12:30 p.m. We won this game by a score of 5 to 2, and we remained in the tournament. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 2 hits, 2 runs, 4 strikeouts and 7 base-on-balls.

Leading hitters were Jeff Burton with 2 singles, Don Jarma contributed 2 single hits and a walk, Roy Andrews made a homerun, Danny Yates made a single hit and a walk, Don Lennox earned a single and Joe Harasta had a sacrifice hit.

After the game the team with their wives, children and some of our fans enjoyed a picnic of fried chicken, baked beans, potato salad, chips, tea, pivo and soft drinks. It really was good and enjoyed by all. Our special thanks to Ida Schulz and Lillie Jarma for frying the chicken and to all the other girls for the rest of the food.

Our next game was at 5 p.m.

Saturday afternoon against Casa View Methodist team and we didn't play too well because we got clobbered by a score of 8 to 0. Roy Andrews started on the mound and, due to soreness and tiredness, he had to be relieved by Lionel Schulz who also had his problems with a sore arm. Regardless of the fact that we lost, we got to play 4 games and we finished about 7th in this tournament out of 29 teams.

Hitters for our team were Rick Fountain with 2 single hits, Don Jarma single hit, Don Lennox popped a single hit and Jerry Zabojnik earned a single also. It was a lot of fun and really good experience for the whole team.

Tuesday night, June 19th, we played Dallas Pateets and we won b y a score of

4 to 1. Lionel Schulz hurled a fine game allowing 7 hits, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Leading the team offensively included Don Jarma with 2 single hits, Roy Andrews earned a homerun, a single and a sacrifice, Rick Fountain hit a single. Don Lennox had a single, Kerry Goad earned a single, Jerry Zabojnik made a single, Danny Yates earned a sacrifice hit and a walk and Jeff Burton had a walk.

Thursday night, June 21st, we played St. Paul Catholic Church team and we won an extra-inning thriller by a score of 3 to 2 in 8 innings. Roy Andrews was the winning pitcher allowing 2 runs, 7 hits, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Bro. Kala leads a group of up to one hundred people who have traveled to Canada, New York, St. Louis, and Milwaukee to perform dances. They also perform often in the Chicago area and have appeared on television. Some of the dances performed by this group are t agansky Tanec (Mountaineers' Dance). Miss Shirley Ruth Carter and Mr. Donald Gene Baggerly were united in marriage Saturday, June 30th at 6 p.m. at Ocker Brethren Church in Zabcikville, Texas.

Rev. Albert Michalik officiated at the double ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hugh Carter of Amarillo, and the bridegroom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Floyd D. Baggerly of Belton.

The ushers for the wedding were Mr. Mark Carter, brother of the bride, and Mr. Bobby Coiocino.

Wedding music was provided by Miss Sandra Dubcak of Zabcikville, and soloist was Lynette Quinn from Seaton.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride chose a formal length gown of white silk organza, fashioned with a Queen Ann neckline. The bodice trimmed in Venice lace featured a natural waistline. The trumpet sleeves were enhanced with Venice lace. The full A-line skirt was trimmed in scalloped Venice lace extending to a chapel length train. Her headpiece was a Juliet cap of lace and crystal pleating holding layers of illusion. The bride carried a bouquet of daisies and baby's breath.

The groom wore a white tuxedo.

Serving as matron of honor was Mrs. Theresa Tomasek Raulie, cousin of the bride of Oscar.

Bridesmaid was Miss Colleen Baggerly, sister of the groom of Belton.

Flower girl was Miss Melynda Tomasek, cousin of the bride from Granger.

The bridesmaids were dressed in peach formal length gowns and each carried a bouquet of daisies and peach colored roses.

The flower girl also wore a peach formal length gown carrying a bouquet of peach colored roses.

The best man was Mr. Rickey Allen Hosch from Belton, and the groomsman was Mr. Harold L. Sutter from Belton. They wore brown tuxedos with peach colored shirts.

The bride's grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Tomasek of Route 1, Rogers, and Mrs. Beulah Carter from Temple. The groom's grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Webster from Belton, and Mrs. Brock of Cambridge, England.

The evening of May 28, 1979 no doubt will be long remembered by the relatives and friends of the Edward J. Marek family of West, who witnessed an unusual graduation commencement exercise with the other graduating candidates of West High School at the West Fraternal Auditorium.

Joseph Marek (19) and his brother, John Marek (18) being handicapped since about 9 years of age and being the sons of loving and understanding parents, has caused them to develop a strong determination to achieve a good education and occupation on their own.

Through the Educational Regional Service Center in Waco and the local high school assistance, the Mara( family was fortunate to obtain further help for their sons to come to their home twice a week during a 9-month teaching period.

After all these years, the brothers earned enough credits to achieve a high school diploma. This reality came true when the Marek brothers in conjunction with the 100 plus graduating candidates in West graduated together (each one of the brothers in a wheelchair).

Joseph, the oldest one, was among the top honored students, ranking in 14th place with a 91.0 average, and John, the younger brother took a GED test at Texas State Technical Institute (TSTI) in Waco and passed his tests to receive his diploma.

Through the wonderful efforts of the local high school, the brothers received their diplomas during the commencement exercises. In addition to the brothers excitement, the West High School Student Council and the West Kiwanis Club surprised the Marek brothers with a class ring presentation to each one.

This fall both of them will be attending Victorian College in Gonzales (a college for handicapped persons), where they will further their education in accounting and electronics.

During the week of July 1st through 7th, they will be attending summer camp at the 4-H Center in Brownwood, where all persons like the Marek brothers assemble to enjoy various activities through the generous contributions of the Jerry Lewis Telethon.

Joseph and John have also been special invited guests of Mr. Webb last year on the Jerry Lewis Telethon on KWTX in Waco.

The Marek boys, their parents and sisters are all members of Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MAN FILM WINS RED RIBBON AT AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL "Vianoce: A Canadian Slovak Christmas" was awarded a Red Ribbon at the 21st American Film Festival in New York on June 1, 1979. The film was runner-up in the Anthropology-Ethnology category. Produced by the Visual Anthropology Unit of the National Museum of Man, the half-hour documentary tells how a Slovak community in Ottawa cherishes and maintains Old World traditions and customs at Christmas time, passing them on to future generations.

The American Film Festival is sponsored by the Educational Film Library Association, a non-profit educational corporation founded in 1943. Each year. following the Festival, award-winning films are circulated to EFLA member institutions, bringing the best films of the Festival to thousands of additional viewers.

Libraries, schools, universities, and other community film organizations have an opportunity to preview films which they may then purchase or rent

for their local programmes.

"Vianoce: A Canadian Slovak Christmas" will be distributed shortly by the National Film Board on behalf of the Museum. Directed and edited by Dagmar Taborsky, it was produced by Pierre Stevens, Head of the Visual Anthropology Unit of the National Museum of Man, and filmed by Roland Pirker. The sound was done by Ervin Copestake. Dr. Mark Stolarik, formerly of the National Museum of Man and a native of Ottawa, acted as research director for the film.

AMERICANS WANT MORE FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES COURTESTY OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI CALLER

(Sent in by Brother John Stasa ) In the last few years, many educators have been saying that foreign language studies are out of vogue in American schools. Whether from arrogance or indifference, that neglect seemed to be spawning a generation whose inability to communicate threatened the country's political and economic interests in an increasingly interdependent world.

A survey released recently suggested that Americans may be changing their minds. The study, undertaken by the Center for Applied Linguistics in conjunction with the University of Michigan and the President's Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies, found a surpris-

13 ing degree of public support for language study.

Among other things, the poll found that while 57 percent of those questioned knew only English, most wanted to learn another language.

More than 75 percent said they thought foreign languages should be offered in elementary schools; 92 percent said there should be language instruction in junior high schools.

Dr. Peter A. Eddy, who directed the survey, said the results contradicted the typical American view of language learning, which holds that foreign language courses should be put off until high school or college. At the elementary level, he said, 17 of 23 state coordinators of foreign language instruction who participated in the survey, reported they have no programs or that there has been a sharp decrease in the number of courses offered.

Other enrollment statistics confirm the decline at the college level.

According to a survey by the Modern Language Association, 883,222 undergraduates did sign up for foreign language courses in 1977-78. But. that figure represents less than 10 percent of the college population, and a decline of more than 21 percent in the last 11 years. Only Spanish, which in 1970 displaced French as the most widely taught tongue, posted significant gains between 1974 and 1977. Registrations for German dropped 11 percent and for Russian 14 percent.

But statistics tell only part of the story. Four American congressmen were on their way to the suburban Cairo home of Egyptian president Anwar el-Sadat when their Arabic-speaking chauffeur got. lost. They passed the United States Embassy. No one there knew Arabic either, but someone gave the congressmen directions in English and then they guided the chauffeur with hand signals. They arrived 20 minutes late., An Agency for International Development officer making his first presentation t.o Peruvian leaders was embarrassed by his poor Spanish and wanted to say so. Unaware that some phrases do not translate directly from English, he announced instead that he was pregnant.

If Deng Xiaoping, China's senior deputy premier, had not brought with him an interpreter skilled in English, his discourse with President Carter last winter might have gone uncomprehended. The United States government, it turns out, does not employ anyone fully qualified as a simultaneous interpreter from Chinese t.o

The government's difficulties in finding knowledgable translators or fluent diplomats are no different from the problems of private employers with operations overseas. Pan American World Airways had to interview 16,000 Americans to fill 400 job openings for flight attendants with at least rudimentary foreign-language skills.

One reason today's job applicants lack language competence is that schools and colleges have relaxed foreign language requirements. In 1915, 85 percent of the nation's colleges required a second language for admission. Today only eight percent do, and the number is dwindling. Also, colleges with foreign language gradation requirements declines from 73 percent in 1967 to 53 percent in 1974, according to the association.

Some scholars think language studies might flourish if foreign affairs were more exciting. But today's foreign news doesn't galvanize student interest the way Sputnik did 20 years ago, touching off a spurt in foreign language---and science---enrollments that lasted until Americans had landed on the moon.

The Youth Achievement Day of District II for 1979 will be held this Sunday, July 8th at Lodge 18, Elgin. We are expecting a large turnout because we have received 220 craft entries. 34 talent entries, 10 queen contestants, 6 king contestants, and the same numbers of dukes and duchesses so you can see that we will have a lot of competition and we will have many winners. We would like to take this opportunity to invite all members and friends of these children to come out and witness the fine performances of these youngsters. The Supreme Lodge officers, our attorney, our editor, and their wives are also asked to attend.

The youth members had a great time ice-skating Sunday, July 1st. Afterward we stopped and ate a nice supper. Each of us were tired but all of us really enjoyed ourselves.

We had a good attendance at our disco dance and everybody enjoyed the dance contest we held.

The mother lodge had a Fourth of July dance and everyone had a nice time.

Our social games attendance was a little less than usual, but in the summer everyone is always on the go with vacations and other things.

LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Readers, We held our meeting June 13, 1979 at 7 p.m. at the SPJST Hall in Ennis.

Those who were not present were told to come to the lodge on June 28th around 7:30 p.m. and complete the cards at that time so they can be sent to Temple for approval.

Please be sure your cards are filled out properly and completely at this time.

Our social is planned for Sunday, June 24, to go to play miniature golf.

We know we will have a good time and hope all of the intermediates will attend.

, Dear Members and Friends,

District I YAD was held June 16th, 1979 and it was hosted by Lodge 188 in Centerville. There were nineteen youth • members and thirteen adults from our -,lodge who attended YAD. Our king contestant, Kellen Kocurek = and his duke, Chris Kocurek, placed first in royalty competition. Theresa Martin, representing our lodge as queen, and Amy Kocurek, her duchess, also won first place. Congratulations Theresa and Kellen and good luck at State!

We were well represented in the talent and craft categories. The following placed in individual talent: Theresa Martin, 1st (15-17), Virginia Bednar, 2nd (13-14) and Amy Kocurek, 3rd (10-12). Our senior group also placed second.

In craft we also received many awards. Andy Hart, Julie Hart, and Kim Schubert placed in the 6-9 age group. The 10-12 age group winners were Renee Hart, Amy Kocurek, Keith Neuendorff and Kristy Schulz. In the 13-14 age group, Virginia Bednar, Lynette Hart, Cyndi Januszewski, Kellen Kocurek and Kay Neuendorff placed. Mary Hart, Mark Januszewski, Deidra Kocurek and Theresa Martin placed in the 15-17 age group.

Our scrapbook placed second and our youth club was ranked third among the district clubs.

Dear Friends and Readers, Our last meeting was held June 8th.

Dear Members, There was a very good attendance and many entries from different youth clubs in District III Youth Achievement Day at Lodge 178 in Longview on June 24th.

Congratulations to all the winners who are going to compete at State YAD on August 26th at Temple High School.

From our lodge I won first place in Pictorial Arts on my oil painting. I hope to see several of my old competition entrants at State YAD. This will be my first entry going to state.

Sharon Mater placed second on her piano solo in Individual Talent, and she won a door prize.

Jackie Zahirniak received Honorable Mention in Pictorial Arts on her oil painting. She also won a door prize.

I want to thank Lodge Longview for hosting such a fine Youth Achievement Day. I understand this was their first time to host one. The whole day was enjoyable in their spacious and cool building. I hope to return soon to enjoy another activity in District III. Don't forget our youth club meeting July 11th at 7 p.m. The date was changed because on our regular date, it was Fourth of July holiday. I hope everyone had a nice holiday and remembered what it stood for.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee, in behalf of our entire membership of Lodge No. 81, Needville, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother VESTINE EMIL SABRSULA< who passed away April 7 in a Houston hospital, at the age of 55.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 9 at 2:30 p.m, at the St. Paul's Church in Needville. Burial was in the Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Angeline Sabrsula; mother, Mrs. Albina Sabrsrula of Needville; one brother, Ruben Sabrsula of Needville; one sister, Mrs. Vlasta Kirkindall of Porter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

We, the Resolution Committee, in behalf our entire membership of Lodge No. 81, Needville, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother DR. C.W. YATES, who passed away April 6, at the age of 69.

Dr. Yates was a former chairman of the Radiology Department at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston; a member of Fort Bend Shriners and was past president of the Harris County Medical Society, past president of Texas Radiological Society and the Board of Trustees of Texas Medical Association.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Viola E. Yates; two sons, Dr. Charles W. Yates of Richmond and Terry A. Yates of Houston; five grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Robert Seydler, Mrs. Mignonne Peyton and Mrs. Dorothy Fisher, all of Rosenberg, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, April _9 at 10:30 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Rosenberg. Burial was in Greenlavvn Memorial Park.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, in behalf of our membership, express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, FRED MERLICK, who passed away Sunday, July 17th, 1979 in a local hospital.

Brother Merlick was born in Mala Lhota, Czechoslovakia on February 11, 1905, and came to the United States with his family in 1920. He was employed by General Dynamics for many years and retired in 1970.

He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Lodge No. 154 for 45 years, and the Fort Worth Sokol for over SO years.

Survivors include: Ella; son, Fred D. Merlick of Watauga; daughter, Mrs. A.L. (Doris) Mobley of Hurst; brothers Joe Merlick, Jerry Merlick, both of Fort Worth; sisters, Mrs. Marie Edwards of Denver City, Mrs. Frances Hlas of Wichita Falls and six grandchildren.

Rosary was recited Tuesday, at 7 p.m. in Shannon's North Chapel.

Services were held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday in Shannon's Chapel, with Rev. William Hoover officiating. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dav`fd Mobley, Danny Mobley, Donny Mobley, Jerry Lee Merlick, Robert Power and Walter Power.
