FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK In the last issue we had mentioned the June 10th trip to the District IV YAD and wish to state that it was enjoyable.

Even though these Saturday and Sunday trips are tiring physically, they are refreshing mentally and fraternally because a person's thoughts are turned to interests and endeavors of other fellow members and humans. We have waited for District IV DYC Mary Haisler's report to publish it and the YAD pictures at the same time. It was a well-enjoyed day and a nice group of members attended. The youth there, especially, are to be complimented for their behavior. ** Saturday, June 16th it was off to District I YAD at Lodge No. 188, Centerville and were we pleasantly surprised when we arrived there! The nicely-paved parking lot was almost filled with parked cars and the spacious hall was also rather well occupied by the interested members of District No. I. The audience was enthusiastic and so were the youth, DYC Melinda Wilson and the youth leaders of District I are to be commended for their sincere devotion to the duties at hand. Another surprising factor was the amount of arts, crafts. etc. displayed by our youth.

The Birth of the Pledge of Allegiance The National School Week Public School children first recited the pledge as they saluted the flag during the national School celebration in 1892.

President Benjamin Harrison at that time called for patriotic exercises in schools to mark the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. Born in 1855 and died in 1931, Francis Bellamy of Boston was an associate editor of the Youth's Companion who composed the pledge. It was during the National Flag Conference of the American Legion who expanded the original wording in 1923-24. Then in 1942 Congress made the pledge a part of its code for the use of the flag. In 1954 the words "under God" were added to the pledge. enjoyed it and Lodge No. 188, Centerville certainly is something that Leon County needed (as State Representative Bro. Dan Kubiak stated at the dedication of the building!) ** The next day Sunday, June 17th was a trip to Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth to the Grand Re-opening of their hall. This

editor remembers the National Hall from 1948 when he first attended a convention of our SPJST after World War II and it was held in Ft. Worth. The improvements, after their fire, are commended and the Lodge No. 92 home is certainly a credit to the memberships' devotion and desire to keep up the traditions of their predecessors. We stayed much longer than we had intended to! Why? Because of the good sincere fellowship that true fraternalists possess! We wish you well! ** NOTICE TO ALL SPJST SALES REPRESENTATIVES! This week we received a letter from SL Vice-President Gebala about the newly-arrived ratebooks of our SPJST Society.

We publish partial contents of the letter following this statement; we have left out some of the dates mentioned in the letter because all of them are, as of now, in the past.

Brother Gebala requested that we stress this one point: After July 1, 1979 all of our SPJST sales representatives are required to use the NEW RATE BOOK. If you write an application by the OLD rate book, the application will be returned to you.

In order for a smooth transition, we (the Insurance Department) will be at locations within your district so that you may trade in your old rate book for the 1979 edition: Naturally, you must have the new rate book to be an active sales representative. You may go to any of the listed pick up points to receive your new book. Anyone traveling by the Office in Temple may also pick up their book there if it is more convenient.

There will not be a formal class at the pick up points. Questions, however, will be answered on the new data within the book. All you have to do is drop off your old book and pick up the new edition.

You will have to sign a statement that you received the book and understand it and the responsibilities associated with it. So, it is imperative that you attend one of these sessions in order to remain an active sales representative.

Remember, the Insurance Department is here to help you in your endeavors in behalf of the SPJST. This office doesn't consider any question as "dumb" and it takes a lot less time to answer a question than correct a mistake. We are totally dedicated in making your job as a sales representative easier. Please cooperate with us.

NEWSBRIEFS Brother Jim Novosad, a lifelong resident of Moulton, died at the Shady Oak Nursing Home in Moulton, Monday morning, June 11th, 1979, at the age of 81 years. Funeral services were held June 13th at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with Father Robert Schmidt officiating. Interment was in the Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Brother Novosad was a member of the SPJST Society. *** Sister Lula "Ludmila" Tracy Kristinek, 78, died June 14th, 1979.

Funeral services were held June 16th at 11 a.m. in the Christ Cathedral with Bishop Milton J. Richardson and Rev.

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends; Such an enjoyable day of activity was shared by a large crowd of Lodge No. 92 members and their friends Sunday, June 17, that it is a pleasure to recall and recount the happenings to those who were unable to attend. The kitchen crew began their task at 7 a.m. in order to have a chicken and sausage dinner ready at noon. Around two o'clock we enjoyed a program of speeches by Supreme Lodge president, Bro. Nick Morris, Vestnik editor Bro. Rudolph Sefcik, Bro. Sid Pokladnik and Bro. Joseph Becan, our last living charter member. The program was MC'ed by our Lodge President Carl Zich. We regretted that Bro. Morris had to leave early because of a prior commitment, but Bro. Sefcik provided us with a few laughs and we enjoyed visiting with his amiable wife, Maxine.

Bro. Pokladnik was accompanied by his gracious spouse, Justine and their handsome grandchild. Visitors from surrounding lodges were recognized and welcomed.

Following the program nearly everyone had a try at obtaining one of the great number of delicious homemade cakes baked by generous friends. By this time the Adamcik band from Dallas had arrived, set up their instruments and began to play for a free dance and the floor was crowded for every tune played thereafter.

During intermission winners were chosen for the gifts donated. The happy winners were: Robert Ruzicka-Savings Bond, Kenneth Krivanek-Ham, Louis Kubala-Smoked Turkey, Millie WatersBlanket, Lily McMillan-Bourbon, Joe Krivanek-Flight Bag, Sophie BlazekChampagne Basket, Mr. Simmank-Floor Fan, Minnie Ruzicka-Hibachi and

Justine Chaloupka-Flower arrangement.

We wish to express thanks to cash donors. Agnes and Mary Svitak gifted the lodge with $25 in memory of their parents. Kenneth and Mary Ann Krivanek contributed $38 and a donation of $5 was made to the rebuilding fund by Betty Martinek and Mr. and Mrs. Sammy George.

The Ladie's Circle sponsored an Arts and Crafts corner and the total sales income was turned over to the lodge in appreciation for the use of the hall and utilities for their monthly activities. We sincerely extend our thanks to all of the workers who helped in so many ways, you are too numerous to mention individually, but, to you collectively, many, many thanks.

In retrospect one would have to say the Reopening Day was a great success, however, this does not mean that we can sit back and enjoy, enjoy. There's still a lot of work to be done, but judging from the enthusiasm displayed until now, it seems that our present generation of Czechs possess some of the indomitable characteristics of their lodge founders. "Mnoho Zdaru C. 92!"

177, ACADEMY

Dear Members and Friends : The regular meeting of Lodge 177 was called to order by President Hutka at 7:35 p.m. 13 June 1979. All officers were present except Vice President Tomastik. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read. Otis Beck read the minutes of the trustees' meeting which was held June 5th. He reported that the floors had been finished and they, looked very nice. It was also decided, by the trustees, that there be no decorations from the ceilings inasmuch as some of the individuals holding parties at the lodge have not removed all of their decorations. Otis and Ricky Beck have reversed the doors going from the bar and kitchen toward the dance floor so that they will open. in. They did a very good job and this was something that should have been done a long time ago.

The membership thanks them for a job well done.

Youth Leader Bettye Hawk gave her report that the youth club officers had been installed by SYD Massey. They voted to have a swimming party at the Lions Club Park. It was decided later that the party will be beld June 29th with all of the local youth clubs invited.

4 box lunch for the swimming party.

Everyone will meet at the Royale Burger at the Temple Mall at 7:15 p.m. and to together as a group to the Lions Park to be there by 8 o'clock.

Financial Secretary Frankie Hutka announced that we had six new members. We welcome these members and hope they will join us any time. A party committee was appointed to select a social for the lodge membership; namely, Chairman Ricky Beck, Pansy Stahlmach and Dorothy Driska. They will announce their plans later. The Rules and Regulations for the following year was appointed; namely, Otis Beck, chairman, Louis Driska and Dorothy Massey. An Auditing Committee was appointed; namely Susan Beck, chairman Karen Blazer and Willie Dusek.

It was brought to the attention of the membership that Academy Lodge No. 177 had sponsored a girls' softball team in Belton. The girls talked to the Board of Trustees asking for financial assistance and the board donated enough money for them to register the next day. Assistant Bar Chairman LaGrange brought up the need for a new ice machine behind the bar. It seems it is impossible to keep both machines working at this time. A motion was made and seconded to buy a new ice machine.

After some discussion it was decided that all members and non-members who are not working Saturday and Tuesday nights will come through the front door rather than using the back door. Many times the people working .behind the bar are too busy to be opening the back door for unnecessary traffic.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY

Dear Members and Friends : The Music Masters have done a fine job entertaining our dancing fans. We again had great fans for polka music from Lufkin. They were Richard and his wife, the polka dance instructor, together with four more couples; all very fine people enjoyed themselves being with us. We were also glad to see several members who were present and have not been with us for a long time. We are always happy to see all of you again.

We are very sorry to have Dorothy Smith sick in the hospital. After visiting with her over the phone, she

will be getting out of the hospital Tuesday.

Everybody is being real busy since it quit raining. There was lots of cotton land which was intended to be planted that had to be planted in other crops because it is too late now due to too much rain.

Don't forget all activities coming up.

We have good bands booked for our Saturday night dances, so come and bring your friends with you.

LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA The dance Saturday night, June 16th was well-attended and everyone enjoyed the music of Julius Tupa.

We had several parties at various tables. The McMillans had a large group, with several people celebrating birthdays. Hope all of them will have many more happy birthdays.

A wedding party was celebrated at Carol and Chuck Barmore's tables.

Their daughter was married Saturday afternoon and they entertained all their relatives and friends at Lodge 172.

We appreciate Carol and Chuck for selecting Lodge 172 for "their after the wedding" party. They are members of American Legion Post 490 and many of the groups from 490 were present.

We also had a large group of guests from Champion Paper Co. and, for some of them, it was the first time to visit our lodge. Come again for an evening of fun.

Our thanks to all who donated door prizes; namely, Brother E.C. Baker, Sister Esther Mikeska, Sister Joyce Kimmons, Sister Cecelia Klechka and Raymond Garcia, our bartender. They are all very faithful to our lodge and are always willing to do what they can for the lodge.

Sisters Vlasta Machann and Mary Green have done a beautiful job in decorating the lodge hall. In keeping with the upcoming Fourth of July, they used the traditional colors of red, white and blue, and they are real outstanding in their artistic work.

Sister Vlasta Machann drew the numbers for our door prizes.

Brother E.C. and Sister Sophie Baker celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary and had many friends join their table.

Tommy and Albert Risinger have returned from a two weeks' vacation, spent at their lake home on LBJ Lake. I know they enjoyed their time there and we welcome them home.

Glad to report Sister Edna Voldan

feeling much better and she hopes to return to work very soon.

My little granddaughter Stacy Le Shan Berkley of Crosby is spending this week with us, and she is looking forward to going to our lodge Friday night for the San Jacinto Czech Club covered dish supper.

Remember our next dance June 30th; Ray Jurecka of Weimar, will provide our music and we hope to have another great dance at that time. His music is great!

There were a total of twenty-six members and one guest present.

The minutes were read and approved.

The financial statement on our picnic was also given.

We voted to donate $500 to Sokol and $50 to each S.P.J.S.T. Home in Needville and Taylor.

Brother John Stasa asked our youth leader, Sister Cindy Tepera to encourage the youth to write to the Vestnik.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:15 p.m. Our next meeting will be July 8th.

Attention Members: There is going to be a PARTY, Friday, June 29, 1979 at the lodge in Academy. The hall will be opened at 6:30 p.m. with beverages of all kinds being served. Our June 12th meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Charlie Matcek who also led us in the pledge of allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Mary Werner had the roll call of officers ; vice president Edwin Susan was absent.

Everyone stood in silence as a tribute to our longtime member, Brother Frank Prilucik.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting and also read a card of thanks from the Dr. Yates family.

Financial report was given by Aleene Zwahr. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall also gave her report. The Special Fund report was given by Gilbert Walzel. All of these reports were accepted as read.

Brother Alvin Zemanek is now a resident of the Leisure Lodge. Let us not forget to give of our time and visit these people at the various rest homes.

We are glad to report Victor Werner's daughter, Minnie Rose is out of the hospital and doing well.

Dear Members and Friends : President Harold Berginann called our regular meeting to order Thursday night, June 14th and also led the group in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting, and Helen Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report.

Both reports were accepted as given.

Dorothy Oltmann read the financial standing, and the names of our new members : Douglas DeLand, Chester, Doris and Kimberly Gebhard. They were voted on and warmly welcomed into our lodge. Then she gave the

names of transfers who were: Brother and Sister L.J. Blazek from the Nelsonville lodge. They, too, were voted on and gratefully accepted into our lodge; they were active members of their organization and Brother Blazek had been an officer of that lodge for some thirty years. We hope the new and transferred members will be able to attend our meetings and participate in our various activities.

Doris Eckermann, chairman of that committee, is again to get a new date for our members to get a guided tour to tour the Fayette Power Plant near La Grange. Members will be notified by telephone if date is prior to our next regular meeting.

Dorothy Oltmann was appointed chairman of a committee to see if it is possible to get an entry ready for the Fourth of July Parade.

The Food Committee reported that, at the next regular meeting, chicken stew will be served.

There being no further business, meeting was adj ourned.

Following the business session, the youth club entertained the adult group with a very enjoyable program. The performances consisted of skits, monologues and group and individual singing.

Afterward, hot dogs with all the trimmings were enj oyed by the group.

Sunday, June 17, 1979 was our monthly meeting with 32 members present. Mrs. Susan Helmcamp, our reporter, asked to be replaced for a while, so I was elected.

This was a concert and open to the public. We are proud of our building and hope to use it often for public affairs. Many family reunions have been held, and we are inviting many more.

Don't forget the "Miss Leon County Beauty Pageant", it will be held in our lodge June 29, and everyone is invited; time is 8:00 p.m. $.50 for adults $.25 for children. This is a big event for our county and is held during the Leon County 4th of July Celebration. I have 40 girls to take part in "Little Miss" and "Miss Leon County." We are planning a very special surprise for you, so come out and have fun with us. Director is Mrs. Parthena Van Wey of Buffalo.

Dear Members : The June meeting was held the first Sunday (the 3rd) at 2:30 p.m. Central Daylight Time.

The History Committee reported that most of the needed information was in and with some final review and proofreading, the paper work and pictures would be sent to Brother Nick Morris. The committees for the District VI fall meeting were appointed. All other reports were read and approved.

The meeting honored Father's Day. With this we had a group of persons from our co-host Lodge El Maton visit with us. We were glad they could attend. Brother Halam of El Maton won the Father's Day prize and Brother R. Sperlik won the regular door prize.

The usual "Kaffee Klatsch" took place after the meeting with Sisters Sperlik, Brdecka, Hanzelka, Haverda, Kortis, Shank and Valigura bringing baked goods to add to the usual fare given by Sisters Luquette and Nezval.

A good time was had by all.

The July meeting will be held on the first Sunday (July 1st) at 2:30 p.m.

CDT. Besides the usual reports, there will be some additional information given.

LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear Readers : The June meeting of Lodge No. 24 was called to order by President Edwin Marek. Members recited the pledge of allegiance and stood for a moment of silent tribute for our deceased members.

Sister Nelda Marek read the minutes from the May meeting. They were approved.

LaVerne Cabla and Regina Zabcik gave the report on the get-together for the 50-year members. They decided to start the presentation of awards at 2:30 p.m. or about that time; the covered dish supper will begin at 4 p.m. Vice President Bernie Gebala will present the awards. After dinner the public is invited to a free dance; the music will be provided by the East Bell Co. Brass Band. Everyone is invited to come out and join in the fun.

Miro Sphanel and Ben Tyroch will assist with the supper. This will all take place July 15th, so please keep this date open.

It's been decided to have a night light put up at the highway near the sign that reads: "Flag Hall."

E.J. Geistman also thought we should change our policy of drinks to: no beer, sodas or ice brought into the hall. This was discussed and approved by the members.

We had lots of ice-cream and cake at the meeting, all seemed to enjoy it.

Those graduates present were: Alan Tyroch and Dennis Marek. Once, again, we want to congratulate you on your fine accomplishment and best wishes to both of you.

President West had everyone to stand in silence for Brother Peter M. Helfer who passed away May 12th. We, at Lodge 66, express our sympathy to the family.

President West gave special thanks to Brother Frank Parma who built the new bar for tap beer and the shelf for the television and to Brother Daniel Nors for the beautiful mirror on the wall back of the bar. They did an excellent job. It has really added a new look to the bar.

Brother George Pauling read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held Monday night, June 4th.

Get-well cards were sent to Brother Martin Smith and Brother James Moore. We hope they are both doing well.

We were sorry to hear about Brother Ira Niswanger having a wreck Saturday evening. He has three ribs hurt but is at home and he was at the meeting Sunday.

Sister Angelina West, we hope that toe you broke Saturday is mending all right. Be careful, OK? Sister Glenna Dungan has been ill but is doing fine. It was good to see her at the meeting Sunday.

Sister Sue Panting, the Entertainment Committee chairman, gave her report. She said there would be cold cuts and trimmings after the meeting, also there would be a drawing for fathers, later.

It was voted to start the lodge meetings at 2:30 p.m. so that the youth and their leaders can attend the meeting.

Sister Libbie Parma gave the youth report. The club has a busload to go to YAD at Longview Sunday, June 24th.

We wish them good luck and a successful trip.

Our June meeting was held on the 11th with President Jerome Ermis presiding. The colors were presented

by Flag Bearer Lynn Pflughaupt who led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. There had been no deaths since the May meeting.

Members reported on the sick list were Noel Kennedy, John Neplava, Sr., John Pech, and Frances Walla.

Robert Eubank and L.A. Mikes were recuperating at home.

Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg stated that the ROsenberg telephone directory will Jeature a picture of the Beseda dancers taken by the Gazebo.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Harley Cox announced that the Eddie Skeets Orchestra from Sioux City, Iowa, will be at the Chandelier Ballroom on Friday, July 13, playing ballroom and mixed music. Tickets will go on sale on June 15 at $7.00 per couple.

Brother A.J.Stayton reminded members to get their tickets for the Blue Room Party on July 22. The Texas Dutchmen will play.

Birthday Club President Sue High invited all to their luncheon on the 13th.

The Birthday Club has luncheons on the first and second Wednesdays of each month.

Choral Club President Evelyn Vornsand stated that they had recessed for the summer.

President Marceil Malak of the Hlahol Dramatic Club reported that "The Eager Ms. Beaver" would be presented in September, the date to be announced later. The directors are planning a Czech play for some time in the fall.

District Youth Counselor Richard Wahlberg announced that YAD will be at Lodge 88 on July 29. There will be good food, a good program, and a free dance following the program. Youngsters will be given a free swim while their parents are dancing.

Sister Frances Olexa reported that the History Committee is progressing well and is now on 1954. She stated that theirs is a very interesting but time consuming job.

The need for a new Scriptomatic mail-out machine was discussed. It was decided to go ahead with the purchase of this machine.

Brother Ed Kadlecek suggested that the capsule from the cornerstone of the old lodge building should be put in our new trophy case.

Our only guest was that dear little lady, Mrs. Albina Hilsher. Door prizes were won by Brothers Royal Warnasch, A.J.Stayton, and Joe Fusig.

The Hawaiian dance Saturday, Jura 16th was a dream. The Chandelia Ballroom was filled to capacity and the ladies were wearing the most beautifu dresses, and most of the men had shirt: to match; the whole place looked like patch of flowers, with every imaginabh color and the decorations were artistic The Entertainment Committee deserve:

a compliment for their efforts to make that night so pleasant. Sister Frances Crossman, as chairman, knows her business. The hosts for that night were also attired to blend in for the occasion.

They were Homer and wife, Rita Alexander (in charge), Lil Holly with Millie Manack at the door and June and Earl Surratt and Orville and Juanita Simon were very busy seating the guests.

Sister of our Recording Secretary Viola Cox and Tillie Helmcamp, our past lodge president, Alice and her husband, Andy Braikovich, of Galveston were present with their dance group named "Two Left Feet" from Dickinson, Texas. Also, few members of another dance group, the Mainland Dance Club from Texas City surrounded a whole table. These two groups quite often attend our dances; they have members from Friendswood, Galveston, Alvin, Texas City, Dickinson and Houston; nice people, we love to have them.

Mrs. Otilia Butchek of Schulenburg will have a thrill of her life to be sunning on the white beaches of Acapulco, Mexico on June 27th. Her son, Roy, with his spouse are escorting their mother on this wonderful vacation. Mrs. Butchek, I assure you won't forget this vacation ever. Have a good time!

A story book venture opened up for Cinnamon Ames, age 10 years old, daughter of Connie Ames. Cinnamon boarded Delta Airlines to New York, from there, the huge 747 Scandinavian line plane to wing to Oslow, Norway to visit, for six weeks, with her Aunt Joan and Uncle Major Allen Dodson, stationed with the NATO Air Force.

Cinnamon will have a terrific time with two of her cousins, Michael (10) 'and Kristen (8). Connie Ames and Joan Dodson are the daughters of Brother Harry and Sister Mickey Rice, all members of Lodge 88. Harry and Mickey are planning to visit their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren next year. Cinnamon is very lucky to have the opportunity to make this trip.

Most people are happy to enjoy one vacation, but the Courtneys combined three extensive trips. Brother Clemence Courtney, vice president of the AMS Chapter here in Houston, attended a convention at Vancouver, Canada and his dear wife, Clemens had also the pleasure to enjoy the scenery and the side trip to Victoria, Vancouver Island, also partaking in an English High Tea at the Empress Hotel. They claimed it was just a short week, so they decided to board a plane and winged to San Francisco; they had a thrill riding the

cable cars and to eat at the Fisherman's Wharf, took all kinds of tours for sightseeing and lots of shopping. They came home tired and sore feet, but that didn't keep them at home, so they turned around with replaced luggage and with friends, the Bufords, Beverly and son, Bill, didn't waste any time and headed for Mexico and visited every night club from McAllen, Reynosa to Matamoros. The four days spent were a whirlwind adventure, came loaded with goodies and tired after three trips, but contented and pleased. I talked to Clemence at the social night and she was full of pep and smiles and ready to strike out again. Where? "Oh, somewhere," she said.

Brother Joe and Sister Della Miksch are back from their trip to Las Vegas and, according to the remarks, they all did pretty good and had a good time; with them were Tom and Clara Jecmenek, the two couples returned after ten days of fun. The teffiperature was a nice 107 degrees. They lodged at the Horse Shoe Hotel which is right in the center of Las Vegas and easy walking to numerous gambling places.

On the way back they stopped in Phoenix, Arizona to visit with their son, Jody, and his wife, Betty Miksch, and they celebrated Betty's birthday by going to the Dog Races and Della was a wizard picking winners just like a pro.

In Texas they made their last stop in LaGrange where Clara and Tom have a daughter, Kathy. They enjoyed the restful farm before heading back to Houston.

Sister Mary Russell, Birthday Club member, is glad to be out of hospitals.

First, she was in Heights Hospital for 42 days and, then, she was transferred to Southwest Memorial Hospital and, after a long siege, she finally was released in May. Mary looks very good and we hope your troubles are over and you will stay on the healthy side. It was nice seeing you and we all are glad you are better.

Sister Elsie Kadera of McKinney, Texas, entered the hospital in the Medical Center in Dallas, Texas to undergo surgery which was successful and, after four days, Elsie was released to come home. Her sister-in-law, Paula Dvorak of Norman, Oklahoma, visited with Elsie Tuesday and then spent two days here in Houston with her busband's parents, Frank and Frances Dvorak. Paula is the wife of Dr. Henry R. Dvorak and they all are Lodge 88 Members.

Our monthly lodge meeting held June 8th was well-attended; of course, percentage wise: No. The faithful and devoted members are always there, they attend meetings and lend a hand

SOKOL HOUSTON OLYMPIC

BENEFIT DAY Dear Members and Friends: In 1980 the special event of the Olympics will be with us and, to assist the program to our ultimate, we are planning a special event of activity on Wednesday, July 4th. We have a benefit day with all of the profits of the day being donated to the U.S. Olympic Fund. This year will be a special for us because we have two men from the Sokol who have a very good possibility of being represented on the U.S. team.

These are the gymnasts from the Sokol Unit in Sokol South Omaha. The gentlemen are none other than Phil Cahoy and Jim Hartung. Only last week you saw Jim on the TV in a gymnastic competition on the Wide World of Sports. We, being a gymnastic organization, owe it to the public to support, and not only support, but to do something special to honor our gymnastic teams. We have a wonderful day of activity planned on the holiday of July 4th. The gasoline continues to be in short supply and within only a few miles you can share with us a day you will never forget and a day you can remember until 1980. Do not risk your life on the conjested highway, but be with us this glorious day.

The day will start at noon- with a delicious dinner prepared by our own special cooks from Czechoslovakia who prepared the wonders for you on the University of Houston Benefit Day. We again called for their services on the Olympic Day and we promise that the food will be better than before. In

Wednesday, June 27, 1979 addition, the price is so minimal for a dinner of such splendor that we know you will all want your friends to attend.

The price is only $3 per adult and $1.50 per child. The menu consists of vep'fova peeene, knedlik, zeli' or ho'Vezi peen na smetane or roast beef or pork with dumplings, sauerkraut, gravy and coffee or tea. This is a really Cechoslovak style dinner, prepared fresh in our kitchen on the day it is served. This delicious dinner can not be the only item on the program, so to follow it with an atmosphere of Olympic activity, the Sokol will perform for you on their winning numbers of the Slet held just last week at Ennis, Texas. The gymnasts brought home 10 trophies, including the first place special number award. You can see all of this at Sokol Houston on July 4th. This activity will start at 2:30 p.m.

Then following the gymnastic program, the popular orchestra of Henry Repka's Music Kings will entertain for the evening. The music will start at 4 p.m. and will continue for four hours. The admission to the dance is only $3 per adult, or we have a special discount offer. The price for the dinner and dance is a special price of $5 per adult. Do not be left out of this benefit day, because all of the profits from this day will be donated to the U.S. Olympic Fund. Be with us and share the enjoyment of a wonderful July 4th and also be a contribution to the U.S. Olympic team. The president of the Southern District Sokol will be present to greet all of you. He is a new president from Dallas, a very friendly fellow, with a lot of drive and dedication that you will all enjoy. Come meet him on July 4th.

We want to be sincere with you; we have set a goal of $1,000 to be donated to the Olympic Fund, and we can only achieve this goal with the help of all of you of the numerous Czech organizations. Even if you can not attend, please send us a donation to the Fund. We have no administrative expense or operating cost, so that every dollar donated is a dollar forwarded to the fund. This is probably the first such venture of the Sokols that I can remember, and we want it to be a very successful one. It is customary to have barbecue of some sort on the 4th, but this is a SPECIAL CZECH STYLE 4th with a special original Czech meal that is not offered frequently.

Just to let you know who the special cooks are, they are originally from the old country. They are Bro. and §Is. Kovanda. Vlastimil Kovanda was a cook in the Czech Army where cooks are not picked from the unwanted. To be such a

9 cook you have to be experienced with schooling and years of experience. He also was a cook in California before relocating to Texas because of the bad smog in the Los Angeles area. I have cooked with this expert and let me assure you that every thing must be exact, precise, correct weight and without hurry. Food preparation is an art that we, as Americans, do not always consider. I am sure that you will be most pleased with the menu, program and the music and we will also be honoring the best team in the world, the US Olympic Team...See all of you on the 4th...

Mr. Belota is in the hospital and we pray he has a quick recovery. Fred Merlick is very ill and is now back home. He enjoyed a visit from his sister, Marie Edwards of Denver City, Texas.

The Sokol Slet was held in Ennis on June 8th, 9th and 10th better and more beautiful then ever. It was so nice to see so many of our friends from the Dallas Circle of Czech Women there and visit with them. We enjoy the times when our clubs get together for socials.

Congratulations to Sheri Mason and Vicki Steinman who graduated on the evening of June 6th, 1979 from North Side High School. Vicki was in National Honor Society and was Magna Cum Laude.

June 10th, / 1979 was Youth Achievement Day for the youth of District IV, which was a very successful event. We didn't have many youth members participating but we had some very good entries almost in all categories.

Special thanks to all the people who helped arrange and cleanup the building; this is a great help. My thanks also to all the parents for bringing their children to YAD because some traveled 168 miles to attend; so you know, that would be nice to see all the first place winners at State YAD on August 26th at the Temple High School. Be sure and let me know if you can't go, so the second place winner can go to State. The Royalty will be held September 29th at Lodge 180 In Burleson.

Don't forget camp which will be August 10th through August 13th at Val Verde and we will camp with District I again. Be sure that I have your camp application by July 21st, so you can qualify to go to camp.

Back to YAD, we were happy to have Editor Rudy and Mrs. Sefcik, District IV Director Stanley Broz and wife, Martha Broz, and our State Youth Director Dorothy Massey with us.

Ronald Gaj dica has been named Valedictorian of the 1979 graduating class at Plano Senior High School. His class consisted of 1,091 students, which is the largest graduating class in Texas.

Ronald was selected as "Most Likely to Succeed" and chosen as a member of "Who's Who." He was a four-year member of the National Honor Society as well as Student Council and also a member of the Varsity Soccer Team. He competed in University Interscholastic League science competition at the district, regional and state levels, placing first district and regional. He was named the Rotary Club "Student of the Month" and Elks Club "Senior of the Year." He also received the "Achievement Award" in science and was named a commended student by the National Merit Scholarship Foundation. He is currently president of St. Mark's Youth Group. In addition to his achievements, Ronald enj oys playing the 12-string guitar.

Dear Members: The Granger Lodge 20 Youth Club met June 9th at 7 p.m. in the local lodge hall building. We had thirty-two members, three visitors and eight adults present.

Dear Members and Friends: We hope everyone is having a nice summer. There are a lot of campers and

people vacationing on the roads.

We are still planning on going ice-skating July 1st at Woodlands. We are really looking forward to having 'a wonderful time with the youth.

Our social games arc really doing nicely. We are still getting several new people to join in the fun on Thursday night.

Our disco dance will be held June 29th with Disco Dick. We are hoping to have quite a few attending.

The youth members are really looking forward to camp and it will be camptirne before you know it.

The treasurer's report was given by Dennis Veselka.

Adult visitors were Mrs. Pavlicek and Mrs. Jochen.

Mrs. Tumis, our youth leader, gave out craft cards and camp applications.

Mrs. Tumis told us that she would resign as our youth leader as of June 1st.

We also held an election of officers.

Sister Schuetz gave a report on all activities our club has planned for the next few months. We will be very busy preparing for our annual picnic and Westfest. Everyone please come and help because it takes money, and many hours of preparations.

We all voted to go to Six Flags. The date will be set a little later. We will be collecting our items for our money-making projects so everyone bring them to our meeting.

We called the roll and then discussed all our new business and upcoming events. We went over our YAD rules once more and decided we would have a swimming party.

Dear Readers, In honor of Flag Day, special emphasis was placed on the Pledge of Allegiance as flag bearer, George Key, presented the flag.

Entertainment for the adults was the goal of this month's meeting on June 14th for the Warrenton Lodge 179 Youth Club. Following the adults' meeting Melissa Wickel, Sue Lynn Schoenst, Jeannie and Rhonda Eckermann presented their song and dance number "Happiness Is". Then the junior group consisting of George Key, Rhonda Oltmann, Sammy Key, Staci Schoenst, Russel Klump, Susan Harper and Anna Key did their skit "Roll Call Boggie SPJST". Staci Schoenst then demonstrated her song as she sang "Little White Duck". Next Rhonda Eckermann sang "Call In The Clowns", followed by Susie Harper with her selection. Later Jeannie Eckermann presented her speech which she presented as the queen candidate at District I YAD and Sue Lynn Schoenst recited "Call Me Irresponsible".

For the business meeting, it was planned to have a swimming party on our next meeting night July 12th at the LaGrange pool starting at 7:30.

Meeting will be at the Warrenton Store at 6:45 p.m. We will try to go ice-skating in Austin August 5th. Plans for transportation to YAD were finalized. A get-well message goes to Ann Margaret Harper who was hospitalized today-get well soon. We welcome two new youth members, Douglas DeLand and Kimberly Gebhard.

Refreshments, hot dogs and lots of desserts were enjoyed before we dismissed.

This may seem a long way off, but before you know it, it will be around that campfire once again, initiating new campers and having more fun than we ever had.

Our YAD will be held July 22nd. This is always a lot of fun for everyone. One thing to remember about YAD: everyone's a winner if they did their best.

He married Miss Annie Frances Prihoda on November 10, 1910 and she preceded him in death on August 10, 1977. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two brothers.

ITEMS OF INTEREST LODGE NO. 47, SEATON ANNUAL LODGE PICNIC Dear Members And Friends Everywhere: Plans have been in the making for this year's annual lodge picnic for some months now. It is scheduled for Sunday, July 22nd.

The premises and Seaton Star Hall will be open at 11 a.m. Events will get underway at 12:30 p.m. with a Flag-raising Ceremony by the Temple Marine Color Guard and the Seaton Brass Band. This year, the food and various dance groups will depict somewhat of an international flavor.

Entertainment will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. to include the Marusak Family Singers from Ennis, Seaton Brass Band, Czech Beseda Dancers of Dallas, German Folk Dancers from Cameron, Mexican Dancers from Killeen, and the Taylor HS Hi-Steppers; hot air balloons, antique car display, variety of foods (barbecue on bun, sausage on a stick, nachos, and pizza), pastry booth, refreshments, children's games and amusements (pony rides and ball throw); auction, (with Mead Miller and Dan Forney as auctioneers ); adult games, beer garden, and farm equipment display.

A free dance will be held from 6 to 10, with music by the Vrazel Polka Band.

An entertainment preview, with all dancers in costume, will tike place at the J.C. Penney Court area in the Temple Mall on Saturday, July 21st, beginning at 1 p.m. All members of the lodge or anyone else from near or far having Czech costumes (kroje) are asked to attend this preview and the picnic the next day.

Friends, and especially Lodge 47 members, the success of this venture, as will all our activities, depends on your help, contributions and cooperation. Q. What is "term" life insurance?"

A. Term life insurance is exactly what its name implies. It is protection sold for a specific period of time — one year, five years or 10 years, for example. At the end of that period, you may take out a new policy but the cost will be higher because you are older.

Q. Despite the fact that my wife and I are the same age and we both take care of ourselves, she insists that she is going to outlive me. She says statistics will prove her right. Is there any truth to that?

A. American women on the average outlive men by almost eight years, according to statistics. But these are only statistical averages of the general population. By following a sensible health program and planning carefully for your later years, you might turn the actuarial tables on your wife.

Q. Something has been bothering me about my life insurance. I'm not unhappy with it, but it occurred to me that I'm just one little guy and if a big company wanted to mistreat me they could just go right ahead. My question, then, is who are insurance companies responsible to?

A. Life insurance companies are closely regulated in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. State Insurance Departments set financial reserve requirements to protect the policyholders. If a problem arises, turn first to your company. Most companies have customer relations services to assure that problems are handled swiftly and efficiently. But if your difficulty is not resolved, check with your state insurance department; they exist to help you.

Q. If I assign my life insurance as security for a loan for my granddaughter's education, do I have to notify the company?

A. Yes, you must notify the company to have a policy assigned as collateral for a loan. Just contact your insurance agent for assistance.

Q. What's the easiest way to pay for life insurance?

A. Whatever way best suits your financial situation. A recent survey found that 58 percent of all new buyers of life insurance pay by the month and the most common method of payment is to authorize one's bank to automatically pay the life insurance premiums each month. Generally, monthly*, payments are more costly because of added paperwork. Quarterly, semi-annual or annual payments are usually less

Q. Before accepting a new job offer, I want to be sure it will not jeopardize my life insurance. The job is in an atomic plant.

A. Your job change will in no way affect your existing life insurance. It will probably not affect any new insurance you might want to buy, unless you are to be one of the few workers actually handling radioactive materials. There are few jobs today that would bar purchases of life insurance and the list of those calling for an extra premium is rapidly dwindling.

Q. Our son is 18 and we want to start him off on some life insurance.

However, he has a mild form of diabetes - it restricts him very little - and I'm wondering if the rates will be higher for him.

A. Not too long ago, a diabetic was automatically regarded as uninsurable..

But there have been great strides in the : treatment of the disease, and today , many companies offer insurance to diabetics at very little extra cost. But each company has its own rules and you should talk to several insurance agents to get the most up-to-date information on various company policies.

CPR TECHNIQUE A LIFE SAVER Every year over 350,000 heart attack deaths occur before the stricken person can be taken to a hospital, the American Council of Life Insurance says.

Many of these deaths could have been prevented if family, friends and co-workers knew how to administer "cardiopulmonary resuscitation" — an easy-to-learn life saving technique combining mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest pounding.

CPR training is widely available . throughout the nation, the Council says„ through local chapters of the American Heart Association, which run training courses in schools, libraries, churches and civic associations.

INNOVATION IN DEATH BENEFITS In the early stages of grief, surviving: spouses sometimes make decisions they would not make later on. For example, a widow might be persuaded by acquaintances to make investments that are not really suitable for her needs.

20 Life Insurance, some ( life insurance companies issue a small cash settlement within a day or two of notification of death to cover immediate needs, then ' issue the remainder of the benefits when the beneficiary says things are more settled.

Beneficiaries say this has kept them from making mistakes in judgment they might have made if they had received all of the benefits before they had worked out plans for their use, the Council says.

INSURANCE FOR NEW HOMEBUYERS

First-time homebuyers are often perplexed with the many different types of insurances that are available, such as title, mortgage, property and homeowner's mortgage insurance.

Dr. Richard Floyd, real estate economist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System, says the home"' buyer should understand the need and coverage provided by each policy since they serve specific purposes.

A title insurance policyholder is protected against financial loss due to defects in the property's title which existed but were not known when the property was purchased. Floyd says both the lender and homeowner can obtain such policies.

Mortgage insurance protects the lender if the homebuyer fails to meet the mortgage obligation. It was - developed to aid homebuyers in securing low downpayrnent loans, says Floyd. The lender is insured against loss for the loan amount in excess of 80 percent of the property's market value. Due to government regulations, major residential lending institutions can't make loans in excess ' of 80 percent of the property's market value unless special loss reserves are met. Both private companies and some governmental agencies provide mortgage insurance.

Property insurance protects the homeowner against physical loss of property. Major forms include basic fire and extended coverage (hazard), specific hazard, and homeowners insurance policy package. Floyd advises homeowners to carefully evaluate these policies to choose which best suits their needs.

Homeowner's mortgage insurance 'is a type of mortgage insurance that pays off the mortgage in event of the homeowner's death. This protection can be obtained on both husband and 'wife.

Since several thousand dollars are spent for insurance premiums during a lifetime, homebuyers should familiarize themselves with the purposes and differences of these policies, suggests Floyd.

PLAN LANDSCAPE FOR LOW MAINTENANCE

What better time than the present to begin planning your landscape development for this summer, suggests Everett Janne, landscape horticulturist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

"A well-planned, simplistic design is the secret to keeping down labor costs as well as time-consuming maintenance," Janne points out.

Understand the plants' space requirements as they mature to aid you in selecting plants that won't outgrow their allotted space. "If constant pruning will be needed to keep a plant in bounds, it's better to select another plant," Janne advises.

Eliminate unnecessary borders along drives and walks since border plantings emphasize rather than hide these elements in the landscape, notes the horticulturist.

Janne suggests having only one or two small well-kept annual flower beds rather than numerous beds which require constant work to be attractive.

"Plan your landscape to enjoy it, not to be a slave to it."

Consider soil and climatic conditions in your area when selecting plants, adds Janne. It is much easier to select plants suited to a given area rather than attempt to modify the soil and environment to a given plant. For the amount of care needed, native and adapted plants wil provide more pleasure and enjoyment than exotic plants.

DR. WILLIAM R. JEFFERY University of Texas, Austin

An "old mechanism", once useful in evolution, may be the flaw that permits some cancers to develop, a University of Texas Biologist believes.

Dr. William R. Jeffery, Assistant Professor of the Department of Zoology, said his research shows that mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) a vital biochemical factor, that participates in cell reproduction, can manufacture protein 13% itself without reference to DNA, the genetic headquarters of the cell. His studies are supported b y an American Cancer

Society research grant.

This cell mechanism involves a "production plant" functioning in the cytoplasm or outer region of the cell and produces protein by itself. It was probably a factor in the evolutionary development of the human being, researchers believe. Now, Dr. Jeffery thinks his research will show that the mRNA complex that participates in producing cancer will provide a new target for eventually controlling some types of cancer. This can be done by changing gene activity in the cytoplasm, mRNA's own stamping ground.

Dr. Jeffery is experimenting with neuroblastoma, a cancer developing from a primitive type cell that is changed into cancer, usually in the early years of life. The cell fails to mature or differentiate into a specific type of cell.

In mice with this type of cancer, Dr. Jeffery is able to remove cancer cells, grow them in cultures where they "redifferentiate", especially if treated with actinomycin-D which blocks the activity of their mRNA. When transplanted back into a mouse, the cells will not produce cancer although the mRNA molecule remains unchanged throughout the experiment.

Other cancers that involve this kind of malignant development include ,teriatomas, certain types of testicular cancer, retinoblastoma, an eye cancer, choriocarcinoma and some other cancers involving the reproductive system.

DR. ROBERT H. PURDY Southwest Foundation for

Research and Medicine Estrogens, the female sex hormones, are being investigated at the Southwest Foundation for Research and Medicine here to confirm suspected cancer risks and seek safer substitutes.

Among the hormones under study is DES (diethylstilbestrol) which the U.S. FDA is considering banning because of its confirmed risk of vaginal cancer in daughters of women who took the drug during pregnancy.

The potential of estrogens for causing cancer (carcinogenicity) or for permanently transforming a cell line (mutagenicity) is being probed by Dr. Robert H. Purdy, a Foundation Scientist. His research is supported by an American Cancer Society grant.

Scientists have found that mutagens, such as certain chemicals or some forms of radiation, in addition to causing mutations can also usually

Wednesday, June 27, 1979 cause cancer. DES is a confirmed mutagen but its potential as an actual carcinogen has not yet been confirmed. The Foundation scientists will use some of the established criteria for detecting mutagens in probing the ability of estrogens to cause cancer.

The research at the Foundation includes other estrogens, natural and synthetic, which are now being given for treatment, particularly to women who have problems brought on by endocrine changes following menopause.

Dr. Purdy and his colleagues are examining cell chemical "intermediates". These substances, produced by the hormone during metabolism before end-products appear, can disclose two possibilities. One will provide clues to the mechanism that makes hormones effective, which is still unknown. The second could yield designs for substitute hormones with harmless side effects. Some of the chemical questions can be answered by using constituents of liver cells from baboons raised at the Foundation.

The estrogen investigation was deemed especially important by Dr. Purdy in light of recent statistical studies. These show a much increased risk of uterine (endometrial) cancer among women having had estrogen treatment, usually for menopausal difficulties.

One such study by Dr. Carlos F. Antunes and others at Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, published in the New England Journal of Medicine last month, included 451 cases of cancer of the body of the uterus along with 888 other women without cancer used for statistical controls. Results showed that the overall risk of uterine cancer for estrogen users was six times greater than normal. The risk to long-time users was 15 times as great.

SKIN CARE DURING SUMMER

Exercise proper skin care during summer months when emphasis on outdoor sports and the beauty appeal of suntans encourages people to spend more time in the sun.

SKIN DAMAGE FROM SUN Exposure to the sun can not only produce sunburn, but it also causes skin to age faster and increases the chance of skin cancer, says Bevery Rhoades, a clothing specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

Damage caused by sun exposure is irreversible. Results may not occur

21 immediately but will become apparent in later years.

SKIN PROTECTING PRODUCTS Products are available on the market to screen or block harmful ultraviolet radiation which can cause sunburn.

A sun screen can block 95 percent or more of the untraviolet rays. A sun block is opaque and totally blocks ultraviolet rays and visible light.

For people who are sensitive to the sun, or who take certain drugs or hormones, or have a history of skin cancer in the family, sun screens and sun blocks are recommended.

MEDICINE SUN REACTION Anyone under treatment for acne should be especially cautious with sun exposure, Miss Rhoades cautions.

Recent studies show that a prescription drug called retinoic acid or tretinoin used in the treatment of acne may increase the risk of skin cancer, especially when exposed to the sun.

Check medicine labels for this ingredient or consult a doctor for warnings, she advises.

DRUGS AND DRIVING

Drivers who are sleepy, dizzy or have blurred vision pose a threat not only to themselves but also to others on the road.

Everyone knows that drinking and driving don't mix, says Carla Shearer, a health education specialist.

But, what many do not realize is that some drugs taken every day can also interfere with a person's ability to drive, she cautions.

Ms. Shearer is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

OVER-THE-COUNTER DRUGS Although most people are very careful when and how they take prescription drugs, they may be less careful about activities done after taking some over-the-counter medicine, she points out.

Medications such as cough and cold remedies contain such ingredients as antihistamines, codeine and sometimes varying amounts of alcohol.

These drugs can make a person drowsy, making it inadvisable to drive, operate machinery or do activities which require a person to be especially alert.

Although advertising for many popular cough and cold remedies does not usually include the fact that they cause drowsiness, read the label carefully on this and other medications for anv warnings of such a

problem, Ms. Shearer advises consumers.

Some daytime sedatives are sold over the counter to help a person overcome "simple nervous tension."

This class of drug will also cause drowsiness and should be taken with caution.

PARASITE INFESTS TEXAS CATFISH

A tiny parasite the size of a pinhead can infest large numbers of catfish in Texas ponds if left unattended.

The parasite, called Ichthyophthirius or "Ich," is mainly a problem in the spring and fall of the year and can wipe out entire stocks of catfish, points out Dr. -Ken Johnson, fish disease specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

According to the Texas A&M University System specialist, the Ich parasite lodges just beneath the surface of the fish's skin and appears as a whitish to brownish spot.

"Hundreds of the parasites will cause the fish's outer skin to swell and slough off," explains Johnson. "Infested fish will lie motionless in shallow water along the pond shore or will swim about slowly at the water surface."

What can be done about Ich infestations?

"With a few precautions, a pond can be kept Ich free," points out Johnson.

"The key thing is to avoid introducing the parasite into a pond."

Since the parasite is passed from fish to fish, live minnows or perch should not be used as bait in catfish ponds, cautions the specialist. Also, precautions should be taken to avoid introducing wild fish into a pond from creeks and up spillways. A spillway with a four-foot drop will keep wild fish from entering a pond via this route.

Johnson also suggests checking fingerlings or seed fish for Ich infestations at stocking time.

"Once a pond is infested with Ich parasites, it's difficult to correct the situation," notes Johnson. He recommends harvesting infested catfish of large size as the parasites present on health hazard to human consumption.

Every verb refers to a subject and time. Bojujeme — my bojujeme (we are fighting NOW), whereas the nouns B03 (fight) and ad jectives (bojovny) bear no relation to time.

FINITE forms of verbs express number and person eontained in the subject: mluvim -- I AM speak ing.

NON-FINITE forms have a nominal character: budovani, sta ykovini — the ACT of building, striking, etc.

REFLEXIVE verbs indicate an ac tion which is performed by the sub jest upon himself. Ex.: miti se,
