FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK .. You will be reading these lines just prior to Father's Day, Sunday, June 17. These lines, while being written, cannot but help bring reflections, in this writer's mind, on the meaning of that certain day, mainly, because this writer is a father of two fine upright and intelligent sons and the son who was brought up by a fine, sincere and intelligent father and mother. Of course, Father's Day and Mother's Day are special days set aside to honor our mothers and fathers, yet, all of us know that every day is mother's and father's day as far as responsibility for the family is concerned; that, naturally, involves many things, especially, the home, school, communication, discipline, understanding, involvement, etc. and details too numerous to mention. In retrospect, our father never spanked any of us children, however, if we did something that did not meet with his or mother's approval, he could give either of us a reproachful look that made us wish he had done so instead. He was not the "ruler" of our home; he was the sympathetic, understanding head of our household. better not be caught smoking until you are 18 years old; it will hurt your growth and health.- For that admonition I have been thankful to him all my life. • Now, as I reflect on the meaning of Father's Day to me, personally, I find that 1 do not expect any special thoughts or gifts because I feel I have two of the finest gifts a father could have: two fine and respectful sons who do not smoke, drink, drive foolishly, etc. and are courteous to their elders, whoever they may be; probably this is due to their mother's counseling more than father's, however and regardless, it is still a reward. This may sound rather personal, however, it is not meant to be so; too many times we
have heard the words: We just cannot do anything with our child (or children)! It takes time, patience, understanding and reasoning; do not expect the school teacher, neighbor, preacher or someone else to do it for you. They can and will help, however, the ultimate responsibility is in the parents' hands. Keep this in mind. When growing up, your editor listened to a recording many times made popular by Gene Autry; if memory serves correctly it was one of, if not the first, that sold a million records. It is very fitting for Father's Day. The name is : "That Silverhaired Daddy of Mine." I have always loved it even as a boy. Some of the words : In a vine-covered shack in the mountains bravely fighting the battle of time. Is a dear one whose weathered life's sorrows. It's that silver-haired daddy of mine. ** ..The district and State YADs are fast-approaching in these months of June, July, and August and are going
to mark a busy summer for our DYCs, YLs and youth, again, and we wish them all much success, however, the one thought that is always in many of our members' minds is the gasoline situation and whether or not they will be able to go there and get back. It is something to keep in mind, because, recently on one trip, we were going about 400 plus miles round trip and
