FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK ..Sunday, May 20th we attended the chartering of Lodge No. 183, "MidCities," Arlington which was held at Lodge No. 180, Burleson the members of which, very fraternally and graciously, allowed Lodge 183 to use their premises without any financial charge to them.

We arrived in time for the noon meal and visited and socialized before the program began at 2:30 p.m. as planned. The program and proceedings are well-outlined in the report from Brother Nick A. Morris. The weather was nice and favorable and everyone was in a very friendly mood, however, as was stated by more than one person, many members took advantage of the nice weather after the rough winter, and went to outings and, also, the date happened to conflict with the dates of local lodge meetings in the immediate area those present certainly enjoyed the day and the hospitality could not have been better and certainly was appreciated by all.

Now Lodge No. 183, Arlington is on its way and the best is wished for them.

•* * The one tning your editor is always too limited on is time to do some reading about events and things that evolve around us continually and, therefore, the radio is almost a constant companion. Many of the news items are noteworthy and of value and, of course, some of them are personal

opinions, self-serving or nonsense and opinionated to a certain angle.

Recently there was a conversation on the subject of the English language and its usage discussed on a program and one of the professors was rather forthright in his condemnation of how it is being used (or rather misused) in certain cases and how we, the average person using it, help this fact along. Of course, in the "Watergate" affair, all of us know how many phrases became everyday words, quote: "At that point in time" and it is still being used; naturally, the word ain't is to be used only in something like a song: "It ain't gonna rain no more", and not in grammatical usage.

The one thing brought out in this conversation was something which probably does and should interest all of us in our SPJST Society and lodges and that is a fact your editor does appreciate because it has been a dilemma hanging around for some time (especially since ERA became much discussed ) and that is the word chairman or chairmen versus chairperson or chairwoman. The consensus of all of these learned persons was that the word chairman or chairmen covers both sexes completely and has done so for centuries and that the latter two chairperson or woman are rather clumsy and unnecessary to use and, saying chairman, certainly does not lower the status of the position if it happens to be used in reference to the female sex. This writer has to agree; why make issue of a ba.-i • fact? The chair can and may be occupied by

NEWSBRIEFS BARTEK REUNION The Bartek reunion will be held Sunday, July 8, 1979 at the Seaton Star Hall. More details later. ** SCASTA REUNION The Scasta annual reunion will be held the second Sunday, June 10th at the Seas ta's home place on the farm.

In case it's wet or raining, it will be held in the Wheelock Community Center at Wheelock, Texas. Bring enough food for your family and guests. The food will be spread together at the noon hour. REPORTS DISTRICT V SALES REPRESENTATIVE'S REPORT FOR APRIL, 1979

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE SPECIAL NOTICE TO: Lodge No. 7 Caldwell Lodge No. 17 New Tabor Lodge No. 116 Cooks Point Lodge No. 120 Deanville Dear Members : Based on the desires expressed by some of you and the correspondence with all of you since then, this is notification that we will proceed with the joint meeting on June 24, 1979 in the New Tabor Hall (home of Lodge 17). The purpose of this meeting is to hear the pros and cons and a detailed explanation of what all is involved in a merger procedure such as is being considered for the four lodges. After the meeting on the 24th, each lodge will then have the opportunity to go back to their members, proceed according to Article 115 of our Society's By-laws, and then vote on whether you are in favor or not of the impending merger.

In the event the reaction is favorable on the part of the four lodges, another meeting would then be held for the purpose of choosing a lodge number, name or designation, and electing officers for the new lodge. Of course, if one of the four lodges votes not to merge and the others do, those can then still proceed with the merger; the decision is up to the members of each lodge.

The meeting on the 24th will commence promptly at 7:30 p.m. I will convene the meeting and answer any questions that anyone may have. In the meantime, please get the word out to all your members about the June 24th meeting.

Bacak with $439,000 insurance sold to 19 members. He was awarded a plaque of appreciation and a $50 cash bonus as winner in the Underwriter's Club, and also a Desk Pen award was received by him as a winner in the Application-A-Month Club for 13 months.

Bro. Frankie Vanek was second in sales with $257,000 written for 18 members thus being a winner in the Underwriter's Club and being the recipient of a cash bonus of $50. He was third place winner in the Application-A-Month Club with 39 months and received a Desk Pen award.

Bro. Adolf Motal was third in sales with $184,000 for 24 members and was a winner in the Pacesetter's Club and was awarded a cash bonus of $25. He was first place winner in the Application-A-Month Club with 56 months and received a Desk Pen award, Bro. Motal was winner in the summer sales contest and won a trip to the Texas Fraternal Congress.

Sister Annimae Merta was a winner in the Pacesetter's Club with $148,000 in insurance sales for 11 members and was awarded a $25 cash bonus.

Bro. Matt Vanek was a winner in the Pacesetter's Club with $129,000 insurance sold to 14 members and was awarded a $25 cash bonus. He was in

Wednesday, May 30, 1979 fourth place in the Application-AMonth Club with 35 months and received a Desk Pen award.

Bro. Silas Smith, state field manager, presented the awards on behalf of the Supreme Lodge. We regret that our Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala, and our other State Field Manager Gene McBride were unable to be present due to the funeral of Bro. Alvin Nesuda, district sales representative of Dist.

III. Our sincere sympathy is extended to his wife, Sister Wilma Nesuda and family.

To all sales representatives, I wish to say congratulations ! 1978 was a new record for us. We sold $1,796,000 in insurance to 218 members which was the most insurance ever sold in our district and to the most members.

Thank you for a job well done, and thank you again for your wonderful cooperation and friendship. I want to thank our Vice President Bernie Gebala and also our two state field managers, Bro. Silas Smith and Bro. Gene McBride for their help. I hope we can continue to work together this year like we did the past year and all of us working together should produce another record year ; let's all pitch in and give a good try.

Nineteen sales representatives sold insurance so far in 1979. I am sure that the rest will help us too because we have 45 sales representatives in our district. We are proud of Brother John Stasa of Lodge 79 who is probably our oldest sales representative and he made two good sales to two members for $39,000 of insurance. Keep up the good work,Brother Stasa, because this shows us that age doesn't keep us from selling insurance.

Don't forget our three classes coming up in June. Our State Field Manager Gene McBride will be on hand at all three classes and I am sure that he will enjoy meeting and helping all of you as well as I do.

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Brothers and Sisters : Our last monthly lodge meeting was preceded by a covered dish supper Monday, May 7 honoring area high school graduates who were active youth club members in the past. Those present were: Ellen Lucko of Yoe High of Cameron, Tomtny Merka III of Rockdale High, Kim Mikulas of Temple High and Steve Morris, Elaine Zavodny, Theresa Zavodny and Joyce Pechal of Rogers High. Lisa Mesecke of Temple High was absent. Congratulations to all of those named and also to all of the other graduates for

achieving their goal of education thus far. College graduates need special congratulations, too, on their special accomplishments. Best of luck, always !

Lodge President Brother Jerry Pechal called the meeting to order and Flag Bearers Gene Skrabanek and David Pechal led us in the pledge to the flag.

Youth Leader Dolores Skrabanek introduced the guest speaker George Pavelka of Robstown Lodge 117 who spoke briefly to the graduates and other members. Sister Skrabanek then presented the graduates with monetary gifts from the lodge and special certificates from her and the assistant youth leaders. The youth club members then went, in the youth room to have their meeting and we proceeded with all routine matters.

Visitors recognized were Sister Ann Balusek of Lodge 15, Marylou Skrabanek, Marie Zvolanek, Mary Williams, and Sister Dorothy Massey, state youth director, also Ed. P. Billeck and George Pavelka. We enjoyed your visit and please make plans to come to our meeting, again, soon.

Sister Ginger Klusacek, lodge secretary, read the roll call of officers and sales representatives, the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved as read and the correspondence received: The mortuary dues from Supreme Lodge and a thank-you card from Brother Jerry and Sister Annie Chupik for their 50-year pins, the cake and the supper honoring them and other recipients at the previous meeting.

The Investigating Committee reviewed the applicants for membership, approved same and we voted to accept these as Lodge 47 members: Ruth Helen Kohutek, additional insurance; Dennis Russel Koliha, Sandra Patti Hoffman, Sean Allen Hoffman, Sandra Renee Hoffman and Jeffrey Allen Faichtinger. Welcome to Lodge 47!

Members reported on the sick list were: Brothers Louis A. Sirney, Sr. and Frank Jodie Mikulastik and Sisters Antonia Orsag and Rosie Pechal. I hope all of these are all at home recovered from their ailments and stay well.

The officers' reports included the president thanking the Chupiks and Hej Is for cleaning the grass around the trees ; Brother Woodrow Marek for purchasing, painting and installing the spindle in the front entrance; Brother Woodrow and Sister Gladys Marek for preparations for the supper before the meeting and thanks to all of the sisters

Sister Adeline Kohutek baked four cakes in the school colors for the graduates which they shared. Thanks, Adeline! The president requested all of the mothers present to stand and a round of applause followed to honor them Sunday, May 13th for Mother's Day. Treasurer's and financial-secretary's reports were given and followed by the chairmen's reports.

Board of Trustees' minutes were read by Board Secretary Lillian Kosarek.

Brother Morris spoke on the progress of the Picnic Planning Committee. More details, later, as they materialize. Workers will be needed the day of the picnic; so please, members, volunteer your services.

Youth leader's report was given and the bike-a-thon was scheduled for May 12th. Brother Monroe I,ucko donated his prize money of $20 from the Mardi Gras Dance to the youth club. The hammers are going real well, with two re-orders being made already. The District II auction netted the youth club $43 with President Jerry Pechal and Vice President Frank Klinkovsky being purchasers of our lodge's pastries; also the bake sale at the Arts Fair netted $66; so, when the youth

club has a proj ect, support it. Thanks to all contributors.

President Pechal requested Sister Massey for some comments and she congratulated the president and lodge members for the supper and other honors for the graduates and also wishes everyone well and added that she always enjoys the fellowship at Lodge 47. The welcome mat is always out for you, Sister Massey.

Lowvica Lucko and George Pavelka were the door prize winners. The happy hour followed adjournment.

The Friday night country-western music by the Telstar Orchestra was fairly attended.

The Saturday night dance with music by the Joe Patek Orchestra also had a fair crowd and everyone seemed to have a good time. The Saturday night dance committee-in charge was Brother Orlando Richards and wife, Era, also J.B. and Emma Winds and Elsie Case; all were on the spot early to be sure everything was in order.

Sister Clara Jecmenek had a little accident while visiting in Austin State Park where they went a week ago.

Clara slipped and cracked two ribs; of course, she is bandaged and suffering, but her husband, Tom, is very attentive and that helps. Clara, I hope you will be all right soon.

Brother Frank Tymel looks pretty good after spending four days in the hospital to have surgery.

We have three special events coming up, so please make your notation on your calendar to be sure not to forget. First: Once-a-year Splash Day, full of activities for young and old, starting with a delicious dinner served from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. consisting of baked chicken and all the trimmings with coffee or tea included; plate for adult will be $2.75 and for child $1.75. Registration for the beauty contest will be at 12 noon, judging at 1 p.m. for ages 1 through 17 years. A battle dance will take place in the Chandelier Ballroom between Joe Patek and Leroy Matocha Orchestras ; •admission $3 per person, and all of this will take place Sunday, June 3rd.

The Hawaiian dance, which also is held once-a-year, will be held Saturday June 16 in accordance of honoring all the fathers. I hope you have your admission tickets because they went on sale May 25th at $3.50 per person.

The Chandelier Ballroom will be lavishly decorated to blend in the mood of Hawaii.

The Eddie Skeets Orchestra from Sioux City, Iowa will appear at our lodge Friday, July 13 to entertain you with their mixed music to please everyone. Advance tickets will go on sale Friday, June 15th, with admission $3 per person.

Besides these special attractions, we have our regular Saturday night dances and one Friday, June 22nd with Nick Navarro. Make your reservations on time and be assured to get your favorite tables.

Sunday, May 20th, the lodge had a special treat for the members, which was for the Workers' Party. About

Wednesday, May 30, 1979 four hundred workers were present; they enjoyed a delicious dinner, refreshments and dance, with music by the Dutchmen Orchestra. The dinner was catered by The Herrmann Catering Service, Inc. of El Campo, Texas. The dinner consisted of turkey, dressing, cole slaw, cranberry sauce, coffee, tea and cake. Everyone had a great time from 4 to 9 p.m.

If you would like to be included in some of these great parties, all you have to do is to extend a helping hand.

There are so many ways you may be helpful. Don't wait to be asked, come forward and volunteer; your service will be greatly appreciated.

Dear Readers : The chartering ceremonies for Lodge 183, Mid-Cities were very beautiful and will long be remembered. We are proud to be the nineteenth lodge in District III. Installing officers were SL President Nick Morris and SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikes ka . Leonard administered the oath to the charter members and Nick presented the framed SPJST symbol, the banner and the framed scroll of chartered members to President Bernard Hlavaty of Lodge 183.

The remarks made by Nick and Leonard along with those of District III Director Sid Pokladnik, State Field Manager Silas Smith, and District III Youth Counselor Ed Kamas , were both congratulatory and informative. We appreciate all the kind words, their best wishes and most of all their support.

Gratitude was expressed, by all the speakers, to Lodge No. 180, Burleson membership for their remarkable display of fraternalism to the new lodge, Lodge 183, Mid-Cities.

President Hlavaty welcomed the friends on behalf of the members of Lodge 183 and he thanked them for coming to help celebrate this important occasion.

Special guests besides the speakers included SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr., Bob Bayer, District VII director, and two lovely ladies Dorothy Morris and Justine Pokladnik.

We didn't get the crowd for the dance that we had anticipated, but it was nice just the same. The crowds must have taken advantage of the nice weather and gone to the parks and lakes.

LODGE NO. 87, TEMPLE Dear Members: The SPJST Lodge No. 87 presented four 50-year membership pins to honored members Friday evening, May 11, at 7 p.m.

Vlasta Jez, president, called the meeting to order.

The pledge of allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Jerry Valchar.

President Jez then turned the meeting over to Lad Zatopek to make the presentations of the pins.

Brother Lad Jires of Austin, Texas is also a 50-year member but he was unable to attend because he was traveling at the time and his pin will be mailed to him.

Dear Members : Our May meeting was held May 6th.

All reports that were given, were accepted.

One report given was about the history of the lodge and items that were collected. It wad also indicated that the History Committee was going to look for the old minute books (they found all books prior to 1926 missing).

knowing the location of these books and/ or any bits and pieces of information spanning from March 19, 1898 through 1926 or even later, contact or write to Sister Lydia Sperlik, history chairman, or Brother Albert Lupik, our lodge secretary.

The committee found an abstract tracing the ownership of the land, our lodge is built on, to the original Mexican Land Grant of the 1830s.

Under new business the membership present passed a motion allowing the committees for the District VI meeting to be appointed instead of elected.

With this we wish to advise all parties concerned, that the District VI meeting will be held September 23rd, at 1:30 p.m. in the American Legion Hall in East Bernard; this is, if we will be still allowed and or can afford to travel.

The "Kaffee Klatsch" after the meeting was a success. Sisters Sperlik, Brdecka, Hanzelka, Haverda, Janik and Kortis brought food and baked goods to add to the usual items given by Sisters Luquette and Nezval.

The lodge furnished some of the sandwiches.

The door prizes were won by Sister Janik (Mother's Day prize) and John Kelner (regular prize).

Our June meeting will be on the 3rd and will start at 2:30 p.m. (new Daylight Saving Time ). Lodge history, committee assignments, and several other items are scheduled. The usual coffee and conversation will be held after the meeting; there will also be a special Father's Da y door prize given

LODGE NO. 49, ROWENA

Dear Members and Friends : The Ethnic Festival was held April 28th and 29th, 1979 in Ballinger, Texas.

The Rowena Lodge No. 49 had a booth of 1,200 Czech kolache, several buchtas, and sausage-on-stick. The kolache sales were real good. We had prune, cottage cheese, apricot, peach, poppy seed and pecan-coconut. We also had coffee.

The cool weather made coffee sales good. We had a thunderstorm Saturday night and thus everything was wet and cold. It was cloudy both days so everyone wore a coat.

While we were attending the District IV sales representatives' banquet in Lowake, Texas, April 22nd, Brother Sefcik asked me to let him know how the kolache sales would turn out. It was great, only we did not have enough, so you see the people in our west Texas area like to eat kolache, also!

LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX

Dear Members and Friends: Lodge 13 held its regular monthly meeting May 20 with a large number of members present. Only two of our thirteen officers were absent.

President Claude Flippin called the meeting to, order. Sister Patty Tydlacka led us in the pledge to the flag.

Various officers' reports were read and approved. In April we accepted Brian Christopher Horak and Monica Marie Spitzenberger as new members and Wayne lselt purchased additional insurance. In May we accepted Timothy, Tami, and Trudy Krenek as new members. A big welcome to all of you We are sorry to report that the young man who came to our March meeting

and asked members' permission to be allowed to come back and be able to participate in the acitivites at the SPJST hall had to be barred permanently due to getting into more trouble only three weeks after being reinstated.

The family night, which was April 27, was well-attended and everyone attending seemed to have had an enj oyable evening.

May 27, the Youth Club sponsored a dance with The Moods furnishing the music. We were also informed that Judge Joe Milburn would perform a wedding ceremony during the first intermission of that dance. Not much more information is available on this matter but hopefully I'll be able to report more next time.

Door prizes awarded at the May meeting were to Magdalene Iselt, Donita Leyva and E.N. Spacek.

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 66 held their meeting Sunday, May 20th with President Henry West conducting the meeting. There was a very good attendance.

The flags were presented by Larry Brem and James Yates. The members recited the pledge of allegiance and lodge motto.

President West had everyone to stand in silence for our deceased member, Sister Mollie Vanzura.

We, at Lodge 66, wish to extend our sympathy to Sister Wilma Nesuda and family on the loss of their loved one and the loss of our District III Sales Representative; Brother Alvin will be missed but now forgotten. There are many fond memories to look back on and for the many years we have known Brother Alvin. May he rest in peace.

Sis ter Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the April meeting. They were approved as read.

In correspondence Sister Pruitt read a letter from Caritas explaining what they do for people in need and how they raise funds for their needs. This is a well-known organization in our locality who serve the needs for everyone. It was voted to donate $200 to Caritas (SPJST Lodge 66 donating $100 and Linden hall donating $100).

Brother Eddie Mazanec, co-chairman, and Sister Ruby Orsag presented the gifts to winners of a drawing held for the mothers : Sister Mary Simcik, the oldest mother was presented a lovely plaque; Sister Evelyn Cepak, the youngest mother was also presented a lovely plaque; and Mother of the Year was Sister Anita Mazanec as the proudest grandmother; and Sister Dorothy Gerlich was the winner of a pot plant donated by Brother and Sister Otto Hanus.

The committee also served icecream and popcorn plus cold beverages for the social after the meeting.

In the youth club report, Sister Libbie Parma reported the club had chartered a bus to go to YAD at Longview for Sunday, June 24th. They have a load of youth, parents and other members going to fill the bus. Sister Parma said the club had sold over 650 cookbooks. She thanked Brother Otto Hanus who has sold over a hundred books ; also others who have sold a lot of them, too. The club has made a donation of $25 to an Elm Mott youth, Robert York, who is very ill. We all send out best wishes and prayers to this young man and hope he will

HEALTH COMMITTEE REPORT— Sister Agnes Mazanec reported she had sent sympathy cards to the Louis Veselka family on the loss of his brother, the Roy Neikamp family on the loss of his mother, also to the Larry Vanzura family on the loss of his wife. May these loved ones rest in eternal peace.

Get-well cards were sent to Brother Frank Leshikar, Sister Evelyn Sulak, Sister Rose Galler, who had surgery recently, and to Brother Otto Hanus.

We were glad to see all of you at the meeting Sunday. To Sister Sue Pauling, get-well soon; we missed you.

Sister Mazanec had sent baby congratulations to Brother and Sister Tim Schroeder who have a baby girl; Sister Kathy is the daughter of Brother and Sister Eddie Mazanec, the proud grandparents (their first grand-baby) and Brother and Sister Ed Mazanec are the proud great-grandparents.

Congratulations to the newlyweds, Patricia and Paul Neslony who were married Saturday, May 12th. Patricia is the daughter of Brother and Sister Robert Stanislav and granddaughter of Brother and Sister Frank Parma.

Patricia has been a member of Lodge 66 a long time and a very active member of the youth club. Paul is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Neslony. He is also a member of Lodge 66.

Door prize winner was Sister Jeanette Smith.

The youth club drawing for mothers was held and the winners were: 1st--Helen Shelton, 2nd--Rose Galler, 3rd--Matilda Hanus, 4th--Darlene Engelke, 5th--Mary Simcik, 6th--Dorothy Shilling, 7th--Gloria Locke, 8th--Libbie Parma, 9th--Anna Vernetti, 10th--Sophie Leshikar.

Winners of the crazy hat contest were: 1st--Tena Urbanek, 2nd--Larry Brem, 3rd--Steve Stanislay.

The judges were Mrs. Arthur Langlotz, Angeline West and Anita Mazanec.

The following mothers were selected to model the hats made by the youth.

They were: Polly Gaidusek, Mrs. Raymond Volcik, Mary Vrana, Georgia Pavlicek, Mabel Crow, Helen Shelton, Maurine Trefny, Mary Urbanek, Yvonne Nors and Matilda Hanus. The hats were real cute and the models were great- and cute.

WE NEED YOU! We had a great time singing those happy ,songs and with Henry on the accordion, it really is great. We Americans are fortunate people, there are millions of people in this world who would give anything for a privilege of getting together free to do as they please and here we are able to do what we want to do and yet many of us ignore these great freedoms and privileges.

After rehearsal we had a short business meeting, with Sister Lillian Kosarek, reading the minutes of our last rehearsal, which were accepted as read. Sister Stuteville showed us the ribbon we had won in the Rogers parade and will bring some pictures for the next meeting. We also discussed the Holland Corn Festival parade and, after some discussion, it was decided to pass it up due to so many having to work Saturday mornings. Sister Stuteville also showed us the nice SYMPOSIUM BOOK and gave instructions on how to order copies for your own use. Highlights of May Meeting Our May meeting was held on the 14th with President Jerome Ennis presiding. Flag Bearer Lynn Pflughaupt presented the colors and led the members in the pledge of allegiance.

The members stood in a moment of silent tribute to deceased member, Elvie Dixie Borens.

Members on the sick list were L.A. Mikes, Willie Mae Powell, Henry Hruby, Frances Walla and Lillie Spies.

New members were initiated by President Ermis. Vice President Tillie Helmcamp gave some interesting facts about the SPJST. Financial Secretary Josephine Pflughaupt introduced her new assistant, Bea Hempel, to the membership.

Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg reported on the many activities of the youth club. Two groups of Beseda dancers had participated at the Rosenberg Czech Fest.

Good reports were given by all committees. Blue Room Manager A.J. Stayton announced a Blue Room party July 22, with tickets going on sale June 1st.

District Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska stated that classes for sales representatives would be held at Lodge 88 July 16th and at Needville July 17th.

Mr. Bill Souchek spoke of the progress of the Czech language in the Gulf Coast area in high schools and colleges.

Brother Tim Kostom introduced guests from Prague, Czechoslovakia, Mr. and Mrs. John Kupka. Other guests present were Mrs. Albina Hilsher, Marie Mitchell, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Souchek.

Dear Members and Friends : Our regular monthly meeting was held Thursday night with a nice attendance of members.

President Harold Bergmann called the meeting to order and led the group in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Roll call of officers revealed all were present.

Secretary Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting and Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Both reports were accepted as given.

Dorothy Oltmann gave the financial standing and the name of Eric. D. Johannes as a new member. He was voted on and warmly welcomed into our lodge. She also stated that a few applications are in the mail.

It was again discussed the printing of dance tickets, the price and the amount of prizes to be printed on them.

There was more discussion concerning means of raising funds for our lodge. It was decided the adults and youth club share in selling tickets.

Donations for prizes are appreciated and proceeded to be accepted.

The tour of Fayette project was given and revived and Chairman Doris Eckermann will check if a suitable date can be booked.

For new business the president appointed an Investigating Committee consisting of El Gene Eckermann, George Pfeiffer and Lee Leonhardt.

Dorothy Oltmann was appointed as chairman to study having an entry in up-coming parades.

The Food Committee reported that the lodge will furnish hot dogs at our next regular meeting.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Afterward everyone enj oyed cold cuts and various delicious cakes, pies, kolache, chips, pickles, and other refreshments.

Members notice that our next regular meeting will again be held on the second Thursday, which is June 14th, at 8 p.m.

Dear Members : The May 6th meeting, of Lodge No. 155, Austin was held in the home of Brother John and Sister LaVerne Hej I. A social was held afterward with refreshments served by the hostess.

March 11th meeting was held in the home of Sister Lillie K. Hejl. After the meeting, a social was held to celebrate the 44th anniversary of our lodge and the birthday of Brother John B. Hejl.

The lodge was organized March 10th, 1935 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Hej 1, Sr. The February meeting was held in the home of Sister Lillie K. Hej 1.

Our January meeting was hosted by Brother John and Sister La Verne Hej I. The next meeting will be held Sunday, June 3rd in the home of Brother John and Sister La Verne Hejl, 3308 Greenlawn Parkway, at 2:30 p.m.

CHAPTER NO. 5 SLAVONIC MUTUAL FIRE INSURANCE ASSOCIATION HONORS MEMBER

NO. 92, FORT WORTH

Do you have memories of a time when as a kid you were excited when your mom got a shiny new linoleum, or immaculate, untrodden carpet and you reveled in its "brandnewness" and the wonderful way it felt to your feet? This was the feeling, I'm sure, of many members when we held our May meeting in the newly-renovated hall Sunday, May 20th. The new floor is attractive and slick as a whistle, and we will test it, at the first dance, the 26th of May and also June 17th at the reopening celebration. The updated lighting system performs efficiently and the freshly-painted interior decorations give the illusion of added space.

The Saturday preceding the meeting, most of our faithful members turned out in force and scrubbed every item of furniture, bar and kitchen equipment until not a trace of the smoke and odor that resulted from the fire remained. This was no small effort and all of you who worked so diligently can be proud of yourselves and be rewarded with the great self-satisfaction of a job well done.

After President Carl Zich called the meeting to order a moment of silence was observed in memory of Willie Bartek and John Skrasek who died recently. The minutes were read and accepted and the assembly approved two new members, two additional policies and four transfers. All other reports were given and similarly approved and then we were introduced to our new hall manager Sonja Seay who assured us of her interest and cooperation.

Among ailing members, noted since our last meeting, was Mary Hubenak who was very ill with pneumonia and

Anna Langer. It was great to have Mary back in attendance; also, welcomed back, was Mrs. Joe Zack who had been absent for a while mending a broken leg. Not so fortunate is Anna Juran who, at this time, is in the Intensive Care Unit of St. Joseph Hospital after suffering a stroke about 3 weeks ago at her home. She is listed as stable but has some paralysis on the right side.

We were told that Sunshine Easley spent a few days in the hospital in May also but is back at home now.

With pride it was announced that two young members are receiving High School diplomas this spring: Mark Kercho, son of Ailene and Al Kercho graduates from L.D. Bell, and Jeff Whatley, son of Jerry and Joyce Whatley finishes at McArthur High in Irving. Jeff is the grandson of Dona Hubenak. Martha Durham reported sending eight birthday cards to our over 65-year-old members.

As the meeting progressed to new business, all discussions centered on preparations for our Grand Reopening, June 17. Dinner will be served from noon until all are served, at $3 per plate including drink and dessert; half portions will be $1.50.

Mary Tesar is kitchen chairman and

would appreciate some homemade pastries from the ladies. Let her know if you can help her.

Joe Kozel and Al Kercho are also requesting cakes to be used at the cake booth, so please let them hear from you.

Likewise, John Murphy who is in charge of the larger give-away prizes, hopes that some of you would like to offer perhaps a bar product, a quilt, cash or some desirable item for that project. Al Kercho started the ball rolling Sunday by offering a Savings Bond.

After dinner we will reserve some time for our guest speakers from the Supreme Lodge. Following the speakers there will be a free dance for your enjoyment. The committees are working hard to plan a day of pleasure for you and they are hoping you will all respond. We need everyone's help to re-coup our losses due to the fire and it looks like it's a "long row to hoe"; so, will we be seeing you Sunday, June 17?

Make plans and attend the reunion and let's all, who are living, come because we are in our golden-age years and soon we may follow those who are gone. By your presence at this reunion, it will make the reunion successful and it will also bring back memories of the young and old life we shared together during our happy and sad days. Our parents and three brothers are gone.

Our parents, a family of five and two other Czech families came to Wheelock in November 1893. They were the first Czech settlers, as well as the first farmers, in Wheelock, Texas. Now, the farm is back in cattle raising. Those are the memories for us older ones and they are also sacred for us because great progress has been made since then by the Scasta generation. We are indeed proud of the tremendous progress and we are even prouder because our home place is owned by the Scasta's generation.

Dear Members: Our annual picnic held May 20th was a huge success. We want to thank all our members and Sokol members for all their donations and hard work; also, a big thank you to all our fine entertainers.

We were very happy to have the Victoria Czech Singers to sing for us in their colorful costumes and, with their beautiful singing, they made a big hit with the audience. If they are ever in your area, make an effort to go see them because they are terrific! Once again a big thank you to the Victoria Czech Singers.

We served from 12 to 5 p.m. and had entertainment starting at 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., then a mini-dance with the Ondrusek Band was held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

A fine time was held by all.

Dear Members: Our monthly meeting was well attended last Monday. The pledge to the flag was recited.

Sister Salac read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were approved.

Sunshine Committee Chairman Dorothy Prasifka reported get-well cards were sent to Sister Frances Baleja, Brother Emil Nekuza, Brother Emil Petr, Brother Carl Ondrusek, Sister Carol Rejcek, Sister Mildred Chervenka and Brother Charlie Barta.

Congratulation cards were sent to new parents, Brother and Sister Ronald Petr and grandparents (for the first time), Brother and Sister Edwin Petr----welcomed a baby boy.

On behalf of Lodge No. 84, sympathy is extended to Brother Edward Kolenovsky, who lost his wife. May she have eternal rest.

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council meets June 14 in Ennis at Lodge No. 25, for its yearly indoor feast. If you plan to attend, please bring a covered dish.

We received one applicant for membership this month: Randy Zmolik.

Music by the Mikula Band will be

provided for your dancing pleasure June 2nd. Please come!

June 18th is our next monthly meeting. Please attend this one.

LADIES' CIRCLE LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH SPECIAL NOTICE SPJST LODGE NO. 92 will have a Grand Re-opening of the newly-decorated National Hall Sunday, June 17th.

The Circle's regular meeting falls June 14th. Because of the few days between June 14 and June 17, it is necessary for the Circle to place a SPECIAL NOTICE in the VESTNIK at this time.

The Circle is asking all members to represent our Circle with various items to be sold in a special booth at the reopening of the National Hall. All members are asked to bring anything suitable to be sold in our special both to our meeting Thursday, June 14th.

Please bring things that are handcrafted, or pot plants, hanging baskets or items you already have at home that are attractive but which you are not using.

The money raised from the sale of articles from our booth will be presented to SPJST Lodge No. 92 to aid in the cost of repairing the fire damage to the National Hall.

Please bring all things which you wish to give to our meeting on Thursday, June 14th.

Dear Members and Friends : Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our vice president, Brother Don Steinman; our president, Brother Jerry Milan, was out of town.

The members stood for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased Brother Terry Lee Adams and our District III sales representative, Brother Alvin Nes uda .

All reports were approved as read.

Due to the Sokol Slet in Ennis on our next meeting date, it was voted to have our next meeting on the first Sunday, June 3, at 3 p.m. Mark this date.

Brother Frank Kovar was our door prize recipient, but he was not present.

We extend a special thank you to the youth club for all their cleanup help after their meeting, from the dance Saturday night.

Sister Mary Hale drove back with her daughter, Sister Mary Katherine Garrison to Illinois and spent several days and flew back home. She reported that she really enjoyed her visit and met her new granddaughterin-law Patty Halford for the first time We extend our congratulations to some of our member graduates : Brother Mark Mamula from UCLA, Brother Steve Mamula from the Chicago Conservatory of Music, and Brother Kent Johnson from TCJC ; and our high school graduates: Lori Steinman, Sherri Mason, Ricky Bourquin and Kathy Havran of Cortez, Colorado. She is the daughter of Brother Bernard and Agnes Havran.

Success and happiness is wished for your future.

Sister Alice Hunter is recuperating after her surgery and Sister Anna Juran of Lodge 92 is still quite ill. A speedy recovery is wished to you both.

Dear Members : The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 29 was held Friday, May 4th, at 8 p.m.

President Adamek called the meeting to order and led the members in the pledge to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members, Brother Julius Hunka and Sister Elaine Stokes.

Roll call of officers showed everyone present.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read.

Treasurer's report was given and the property report was also given.

Sympathy acknowledgements were read from the Julius Hunka family and Joseph Downs.

New applicants for membership are: Kristen Danielle Holubec, Gracie Ann Simcik, Cody Louise Seigmund, Chester Burgress and Catherine B. Thames ; and for senior membership is Leo Rieger.

Those who transferred to Lodge No. 187 are: Alex Veselka, Helen Veselka and Jaine Veselka.

At our last meeting it was voted on to buy a bus for our lodge. After some of our members checked into the matter, it was brought up at this meeting, that the bus was more expensive than the lodge wanted to spend. Another motion was made to go ahead and buy the bus.

Door prizes were won by Elsie Kaiser, Ronnie Rieger and Leroy Marx.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, June 10, at 4 p.m.

Dear Members : The second annual Czech Festival of Victoria has been set for Sunday, June 24th, at 1 p.m. It will be held at the Community Center, 2905 East North Street in Victoria.

There will be entertainment provided for everyone throughout the day.

The Victoria Czech Singers and the Gulf Coast Singers of Ganado will sing.

For . recreation there will be an auction, country store, and cake walk held. You will also enjoy delicious kolache and barbecue sandwiches to eat, and a beer garden.

Additional entertainment will be held with a battle dance from 4 to 10 p.m., with music by the Leo Majek Orchestra of Corpus Christi, and the Plain Country of Victoria.

Fellow members of the Supreme Lodge, officers and members of Lodge No. 183, friends and guests, especially those from other lodges and other districts. We have come together today to pay tribute to one of our newest lodges in the SPJST, and to deliver the charter to the first lodge to be chartered in this year of 1979. Of course, I am referring to Lodge No. 183, "Mid-Cities", located in Arlington, Texas. It is with much pleasure that we do so and we all want to welcome Lodge 183 into our SPJST family of fraternal lodges.

At the very outset, I want to pay tribute to the officers and members of Lodge No. 180 here in Burleson for making their facilities available to Lodge No. 183 free of charge. Brother Dennis Barabas, president of Lodge 180, we wish to thank you and the members of Lodge 180 for this very kind gesture. It is most fitting and appropriate to charter an SPJST lodge in another neighboring SPJST facility.

I know I speak for the officers and nembers of Lodge 183 when I express our sincere thanks for this fine

Before we continue, I think it would be most fitting and appropriate if we stood in a moment of silent tribute to a very dear friend who passed away

recently and who had much to do with the early beginnings of Lodge 183 District III Sales Representative Bro. Alvin Nesuda.

Now, a few words about how this lodge got started. Alvin Nesuda, the late District III Sales Representative, contacted Daniel Roznovsky in March of 1975, and Silas Smith visited with

APPROXIMATELY SIXTY MEMBERS of Lodge 183, Mid-Cities are solemnly pledging their obligations during the official chartering ceremonies held May 20th, 1979 in Burleson. him on two other occasions. Inez Greenlees was contacted by Silas Smith, since he knew Inez's mother, and asked her to become a sales representative for the new Lodge 183 in February 1978.

Johnnie Gaidusek of Lodge 66 was instrumental in Bernard Hlavaty becoming a sales representative for SPJST. In June of 1978, while at a 25th Anniversary celebration at the SPJST Hall in West, Bro. Hlavaty talked with Johnnie and asked him how he could become a sales representative. He told him he'd turn in his name to Silas Smith, who in turn, passed this information along to Alvin Nesuda.

Alvin came to Bernard's home in Arlington in August and it wasn't until then that Bernard had any knowledge that a new lodge was being organized in the Mid-Cities area. Bro. Hlavaty sold his first policy in September 1978, and together with other sales representatives, have continued to write new members into the lodge. So far, Bro. Hlavaty has enrolled approximately 80 percent of the members into the lodge. The membership today stands at approximately 80.

Lodge 183 was formally organized on 9 December 1978 in the Garden Room of the Arlington Community Center, located in South Arlington in Vandergriff Park, 2801 Matlock Rd. Those representing the Supreme Lodge at that meeting were Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, SFM & Mrs. Silas H. Smith, SFM & Mrs. Eugene McBride, District III Director Sid Pokladnik, and District Sales Representative Alvin Nesuda. At that meeting the membership chose the designation "Mid-Cities". Also elected officers in that meeting were: President Bernard Hlavaty, First Vice President Eugene }lavran, Second Vice President Barbara Betik, Secretary Maurine Hamilton. Financial Secretary Daniel Roznovsky, and

The future of this lodge is in your hands. What becomes of this lodge, as it is with any lodge, is going to depend

Morris: Thank you, Bro. Mikeska. I would now like to introduce some individuals and ask them to come onstage. First of all, the president of Lodge 183, Bro. Bernard Hlavaty, Sr.; next, the director of District III, Bro. Sid Pokladnik (and Sis. Justine) of Dallas ; State Field Manager Bro. Silas Smith from the Home Office in Temple; District III Youth Counselor Bro. Ed Kamas of Dallas.

Now, the other officers of Lodge 183, and I would like for them to stand to the rear of the other charter members so that everyone can see who they are.

First Vice President Eugene Havran, Second Vice President Barbara Betik, Secretary Maurine Hamilton, Financial Secretary Daniel Roznovsky (already on stage), Treasurer Inez Greenlees, Youth Leader Diane Schneider, Reporter Betty Hlavaty, and Flag Bearer Gary Roznovsky.

Thank you very much, and the rest of you charter members may take your places at the designated first three tables near the stage.

I would also like to recognize other members of the Supreme Lodge and those who are with us from other districts ; Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr., Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary; District VII Director Bro. Bob Bayer from Floresville; Vestnik Editor Rudy Sefcik and his wife Maxine from West.

(Also, my wife, Dorothy).

We are very glad to have all of you with us today. We would also like to express our thanks to Vestnik Editor, Bro. Rudy Sefcik, for his cooperation in helping us publicize this event in our official organ, the Vestnik. The publicity regarding these chartering ceremonies was handled out of the president's office at the Supreme Lodge and sent to thirty-six news media - newspapers, radio and television stations and wo wish, at this time, to acknowledge their fine cooperation and assistance.

SPJST — Someone always is asking

what the initials mean when used in numerous newspaper articles in this area. In Czech they stand for "SlovanskA Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas", which means "Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas".

The SPJST is a wonderful organization, a Fraternal Benefit Society.

The SPJST, however, is much more than an insurance Society. It's almost a way of life in which persons are bound together socially and by bonds of mutual concerns and interest. The SPJST also has a vigorous youth program throughout the state.

It is always nice to see brothers and sisters from neighboring lodges and districts attend these chartering ceremonies and supporting their brothers and sisters in these new lodges. It shows that you care.

As most of you know, Lodge 183 in Arlington is in Tarrant County and in District III of the SPJST, an area comprising nine counties. Lodge 183 joins the other eighteen lodges in District III as the newest lodge in the district and the 131 lodges throughout the State of Texas.

Brothers and sisters, by the solemn pledge that you have just taken with Bro. Mikeska, you are now entitled to all the rights and privileges (and I might add - responsibilities) of membership in the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas and in this new lodge, "Mid-Cities" No. 183.

Brother Mikeska has related to you the seriousness of the pledge that you have taken. I trust that you will not take this pledge too lightly. The tenets upon which the SPJST was founded in 1897 were and are benevolence, humanity, and brotherhood, and you should all bind yourselves to live according to these tenets and surely you will find it easier to overcome the day-to-day obstacles of your daily lives. I would also refer you to the color brochures which you found on the table as you came in, which graphically and pictorially depict the history and past of the SPJST since its beginning and organization in 1897. I would also like to remind you that we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our early-day pioneer forefathers, most or all of whom were of Czech extraction, who founded this wonderful organization back in 1897.

We are entering what I would consider very serious and trying times - mostly of an economic nature. Who would have thought a few years back that we would be buying gasoline at 81 cents a gallon and there are predictions that it might be a dollar a

Wednesday, May 30, 1979 gallon before the year is out. The economic horizon does not look good; the black clouds appear to be gathering. We must, however, remain confident and hopeful for the future and continue to work for the best. After all, our communities, counties, state, and nation have gone through numerous crises since the time the SPJST was formed in 1897 - the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam, the Depression of the late 20s and early 30s, various other economic upheavals, etc., etc., but we have managed not only to survive, but also to prosper. The difficult periods of the past have only served to strengthen our resolve and taught us what we had hoped would be valuable lessons. I do not understand everything about what is happening during the current period and I think there are a lot of other people who also don't understand it, but surely wisdom and good j udgment will prevail and we will come through this period with the assurance of better times and days ahead. We must not despair or give up hope. Let us continue working for the mutual good.

As has been inevitable, the mantle of leadership has fallen upon succeeding generations and younger shoulders, and I think they have held and carried the mantle of leadership very well and our forefathers would be very proud of what has happened to the SPJST that they left us.

I will now ask the entire assembly to stand and repeat after me: "Let us stand united . in the cause of humanity . let us stand united . in the cause of brotherhood . let us stand united . in the bonds of fellowship . and fraternal love . for all time to come."

Lodge 183 in Arlington is situated in what has become known in recent years as the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex, a region rapidly approaching 2,000,000 in population. Lodge 183 is right in the big middle of this populated complex. You should continue to do well in recruiting new members into your lodge, and with the cooperation of all your officers and members, good growth and progress is surely to come as the result.

The SPJST is a family-oriented organization, and of course, the family is the basic social unit of our American society. Everything that we do revolves around the family and that is exactly where the SPJST fits in. In addition to excellent insurance benefits, we offer a well-rounded program of social, benevolent, and fraternal interaction and fellowship among its

19 members which reaches deep into the community. Ask anyone here at Lodge 180 in Burleson what an important and integral part of this community this lodge and this facility is. All of our lodges need to become an integral part of the community in which they are located. Our lodges cannot isolate themselves and operate as a secret and closed organization because they are not secret and they are not closed there is nothing secret about us. We operate entirely in the open under the authority of the statutes of the State of Texas and we have nothing to hide or be ashamed of. How well any lodge sells itself and the SPJST message to the surrounding community will be reflected in direct proportion to your acceptance and your growth. It is essentially a public relations undertaking. You must let your neighbors and your community know that you exist, what you are doing, and what you stand for. Other lodges that have followed this course of action have fared well and have had no trouble or difficulty being accepted in the community and are enj oying steady gains in membership. Of course, as in so many instances in any organization, so much depends upon capable leadership, and I feel that you are not lacking in this area. To put it still another way, "You've got a good thing going"; all you have to do is build on it, sell yourselves and your organization and people will naturally become interested in you and want to eventually join you and be a part of your efforts. You will find the whole undertaking to be "contagious".

You are joining a large fraternal family. You are not alone. You have ranks of fraternal brothers and sisters that reach from the Red River to the Gulf of Mexico and from the Sabine River to almost the Davis Mountains and the Panhandle of Texas - some 56,000 strong. So you see, you are part of a living, vibrant, and growing fraternal family. It can be stated, without fear of contradiction, that the SPJST has been for a number of years and is, the fastest growing Fraternal Benefit Society domiciled in Texas, so you have joined an organization that is going places and is definitely on the move.

Your District Youth Counselor will, I am sure, have something to say about your youth and our youth program very shortly, but I would,,like to state at this time and caution you not to alienate or isolate your young people.

Don't forget about them! You will be looking for new leaders one of these days, so you should cultivate their

interests and participation. They are a part of the entire social fabric of this state and nation, just as you once were, and you should include them in all your activities. Think on this and consider it carefully.

At this time, with Bro. Mikeska's help, I would like to present some items to Lodge 183, through you, Bro. Hlavaty, the lodge president. First of all, we have your lodge emblem which is the emblem or symbol of the SPJST which you should display in a prominent place here today and in your meeting places in the coming weeks and months. This symbolizes the entire SPJST. You have, of course, the traditional star, with the letters SPJST within the five points of the star, surrounded by an oak leaf on the left denoting strength, steadfastness, and sturdiness, and the leaf of the lily on the right, indicating cleanliness and moral purity. This emblem and the lodge charter which you will receive shortly have been framed and enclosed by our Supreme Lodge "Master Craftsman", Bro. Otto Hanus, who is employed as the head of our Museum, Library, and Archives Department.

This is your lodge banner, which we have made for you and which should be displayed every time your lodge meets. Sister Massey, our State Youth Director, has monogrammed this for you with your lodge name and number.

This is your framed charter with the names of all the charter members typed thereon, including all those who have applied and been accepted for membership in Lodge 183 either before or by today. Those members who have applied for membership, before or by this date and are approved later, will have their names added in the Supreme Lodge and the charter will be returned to you for permanent possession.

In conclusion, I would like to say that I am convinced that the greatest good in this or, any lodge will be accomplished by everyone - and I do mean everyone - cooperating and pulling together for a common goal.

We are confident that you are equal to the task. May your works bear fruit and may you enjoy much success in the coming months and years. We welcome you, Lodge No. 183 "Mid-Cities" in Tarrant County into our wonderful SPJST family and we wish you well! Congratulations and God' bless you all! Now, Bro. Roznovsky.

20 of Lodge 183 Mid-Cities. On behalf of the officers and members of Lodge 183, I'd like to extend a warm welcome to the officers of the SPJST Supreme Lodge in Temple, also officers of visiting lodges, relatives and friends.

We thank you for coming to celebrate an important occasion, the chartering of another SPJST lodge, Lodge 183 Mid Cities.

We hope you enj oyed the meal and plan to stay the rest of the afternoon.

We will have a dance beginning at 5 p.m., also, the drawing during the first intermission of the dance. Kolaches, desserts, sandwiches, coffee and tea , will be available throughout the afternoon. Activities include a cakewalk, prize ticket sales and cookbooks.

We want to thank Dennis Barabas, president of Lodge 180, and all the membership for the use of their beautiful lodge hall facilities and all their help. This lodge was a little slow in getting Started, but in the past few months has been progressing real well. I feel Lodge 183 has a fine group of " hardworking dedicated officers and members and they have only one way to go and that is forward. ° Speaking for myself, and I am sure all other members of the SPJST feel the same, we welcome you as newly-chartered members and wish you the best of luck in the future.

To you sales representatives of Lodge 183, keep those applications coming; it will make your lodge grow bigger and better and also the SPJST. In closing, I would like to compliment the members of Lodge 180 Burleson on their generosity of letting a sister lodge use their lodge home free of charge. vtivrNiK It is indeed a great honor and privilege to be able to participate in the chartering ceremonies of Lodge 183.

The youth program of the SPJST is an outstanding way of developing leadership traits that will remain with our youth for the rest of their lives.

Any lodge with an active youth club is very active also. One goes with the other, therefore, I wish to urge all parents to get your children involved in the youth club of your lodge.

Through the leadership of your youth leader, Diane Schneider, you have the potential of a large and active youth club, but you parents should be available with your support and services.

The time of these ceremonies comes At a very opportune time because the youth club year begins on June 1st.

The up-coming events are: Youth Achievement.Day (YAD) in Longview on June 24. This is always an exciting time for all active youth and this year promises to be no exception. We will enj oy the hospitality of another comparatively new lodge, Lodge 178. It would be worth your while to come see our youth compete in various proj ects for ribbons and money. The SPJST summer camp is another big event scheduled in July. (Watch your Vestnik for dates and more news regarding both of these functions.)

State competition of YAD will be held in August and September in Temple and here at Lodge 180.

The new year of 1980 is still another exciting part of the SPJST. With the convention coming up in June of next year and scheduled to be held in San Antonio, we will be selecting a new Miss SPJST, first on the district level and the finalists will go to the convention to vie for the title on the state level. More details will be forthcoming.

As you see, we try to keep up to date with worthwhile events for all youth.

Thank you again for inviting me to be a part of your BIG DAY here at Lodge 183, "Mid-Cities". Welcome to the SPJST Society. .. District III Director Sid Pokladnik: Dear fellow SPJST members : I also wish to thank Lodge 180 "The Good Life", here of Burleson for acting as wonderful hosts for Lodge 183 and this chartering. It was a very kind gesture on their part.

I wish to congratulate those charter members of "Mid-Cities" lodge No. 183 Arlington who are present today and their present officers. I urge you to participate and be a part of your lodge and enj oy your membership.

Only by participating can you enjoy the full benefits of membership. Try to get involved. Once you become active it tends to grow on you and the more you will like it.

I welcome you as the nineteenth lodge in District III. We are definitely a growing family here in North Texas.

If you ever need help in the future, please don't hesitate to ask for it. The Home Office in Temple always stands ready to be of assistance, but you must call on them. If there is anything that I can do in this area as your district director, please get in touch with me and I will do my best to be of service.

LOVE. Post Chartering Observations The chartering ceremonies went well, but we would have liked to have seen more people in attendance, however, as I pointed out in my remarks, part of this might have been attributed to the scarcity of gasoline in that section of the state and the worsening general economic situation.

The people who were present seemed to be in a good mood and enthusiastic.

We left as the evening dance was getting under way and it appeared that the crowd was rather small. We trust that overall Lodge 183 did well financially and that no losses were incurred. The generosity of Lodge 180 in Burleson cannot be overlooked or overemphasized. The free use of the facilities was a tremendous help to Lodge 183 and I am sure the lodge will remember their gesture for a long time. Good luck, Lodge 183!

Dear Readers, , Our youth club meeting was held Sunday, May 6th.

All reports were given and were in order.

We had a Mother's Day program and crazy hat contest for our mothers.

Each youth member made a card for their mother and we had a contest on them.

We elected new officers for the coming year.

Sister Schuetz handed out our craft .cards and gave a full report of our future activities. She mentioned that our graduation party would be held Friday, May 18th at 8 p.m.

The youth club members presented a Mother's Day program for the residents at the West Rest Haven. We also took them some refreshments and corsages for each resident.

We are practicing the Beseda and also for YAD at our socials.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 15-72 met May 7, 1979, in their regular monthly meeting. It has been approved by Lodge No. 15 and Lodge No. 72 to have a joint youth club. Our appreciation goes to both - lodges.

The meeting opened with the pledge of allegiance. It was reported that we cleared $47.60 from our bake sale. A special thanks to all who donated ' baked goods.

We discussed having a booth at Folk - -Fete. The selling of hammers as a special money-making proj ect was also discussed.
