FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK. ..In this issue we will concentrate on a number of things we feel are of interest to many of our members. We try to call your attention to anything we feel you should keep in mind and, especially, those which are in the near future. *—* .. One of these is the annual meeting of CESAT (Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas ) Saturday, May 26th at SPJST Lodge Praha No. 29, Taylor, Tx. There are many of our members who probably do not know how this organization had its beginning.

Brothers August and George Kacir, Charles H. Chernosky, Roman Bartosh and others, many years past, had attended the University of Texas and received degrees from there; realizing that there had to be something done to help students of Czech descent, especially those who wished to advance their knowledge of their mother language, they organized the "Texas Council of Higher Education" for the purpose of making low-interest loans to students so that they could attend the U of T and advance their education and, then, repay the loans to the association or council.

Later the council's activities slowed down and were not as active, however, in recent years, members Albert Blaha, Calvin Chervenka, James Mendl, etc. have revived the activities of the organization and renamed it the present name CESAT, however, it still serves the same purpose.

well-known for their devotion to purpose and so are the present supporters of the efforts ; „ let us continue in these efforts. If we do not,

who will? Our ancestors did not wait for someone else to do their duty; why should we? It would be well for anyone interested to attend that meeting Saturday, May 26th in Taylor, students may find some interesting information available to them ; why not inquire? * * .. Another item in this issue is a very important letter from our SL Vice-President Bernard M. Gebala calling attention to the fact that too few of our sales representatives are taking advantage of our State Field Managers' classes which are held in the various localities in our Society in the State of Texas.

Your editor has a very fraternal, sincere and personal plea to all of our sales personnel, wherever they may be and whoever they are -- remember that no one person has all there is to know about any subject; there is always something to learn about anything and that goes for selling of insurance also! Somehow there seems to be a feeling with some of our sales representatives that they would feel embarrassed to ask one of our SFMs for help or explanation on some problem; I can assure all of our readers, that recently, one question answered at a SR seminar made me, personally, aware of how difficult it would have been for me to answer that same question asked by a prospect if it had been asked of me before that seminar!

Remember, things are always changing including the insurance field! ** .. Most Texans would hastily agree that litter is unsightly, unsafe, unsanitary and un-American. Hardly anyone would dare own up to having had a tissue ripped out of his fingers by gale force winds, much less admit that he actually, with his own hands, threw a bottle into a bar ditch. Well, if so many of us are such good, upstanding members of the "neat generation," who is doing all that littering?

For a year-long period ending August 31, 1978, it cost taxpayers $7.2 million just to clean up along Texas roadways, and that's only the price tag figured by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation; it doesn't include the cost of removing litter from city streets, state and city parks, or from around public buildings and stadium grounds.

Maybe, just maybe, the mysterious THEY are responsible for the piles of trash, but more than likely WE are the culprits. Could it be a case of unintentional carelessness, or an epidemic of terminal thoughtlessness? Perhaps, heaven forbid, it's that perverse thrill of beating the law -highway littering is illegal and subject to a maximum $400 fine, you know.

Whatever, it is, we can do something about it.

Don't litter! Dispose of trash properly! Then, spread the word -- if YOU don't litter and WE don't litter and THEY don't litter, then maybe there's a chance.

One way to help arouse public awareness is to show the 16mm film "A Litter MESSage" to your club, group, organization, class, wedding guests, family members, or bowling team. Simply write to "A Litter MESSage," Box 5064, Austin, Tx. 78763, to make arrangements to borrow the 13-minute sound and color motion picture.

We all need reminders every once in a while to pitch in and fight litter -- and the Department of Highways and Public Transportation has just given us 7,200,000 of them.

We thank you for attending these classes because, by your attendance, you always gain knowledgeable information for your sales work in the field and, as we have pointed out previously, among all the sales representatives on the statewide basis no person in the field knows it all; so, once again, I want to stress to each of you that ADDITIONAL information that you learn at these classes are for YOUR advantage for becoming a better sales person in our SPJST. The third annual Tepera reunion will be held June 9th, 1979 at the Marak Parish Hall at the Community of Marak near Cameron, Texas. The activities for the day will begin with services at 11:30 a.m. in the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church at Marak.

Continued from page 8 LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE

A very nice group attended Lodge 107's meeting at the lodge hall May 6, 1979 at 5 p.m.

President Bayer called the meeting to order and the pledge was led by Roxanne Bayer.

All officers answered roll call.

Minutes were read and the treasurer's report was then given.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer gave a repor t on youth club activities. These include a trip to New Braunfels June 26; a trip to the Cheoron Mining site June 3rd; District VII YAD July 22; and camp at Val Verde August 6th. She also gave a financial report and reported that more work needs to be done on the Bus Fund. Lodge 107 Youth Club President Denyse Heritage was elected Peanut Festival Queen. Lodge 107 has had representatives in the court before, but this is the first time we've had a queen. Congratulations Denyse, may your reign be a happy one!

The oldest mother, Mrs. Agnes Pavliska, and the youngest mother, Mrs. Lori Hrna , present, were presented corsages. A lovely social and refreshments were enjoyed at our Mother's Day meeting.

A report and discussion on the purchasing or building new tables was given. No action was taken at present.

A discussion pertaining to the new regulations on beer sales was held.

Dances and dance bands were also discussed. A country-western band, The Cactus Country, will play for a dance June 9th.

Correspondence from the First City National Bank was read.

President Bayer appealed to the ladies to sew small sacks about 12 inches by 20 inches, in which to put peanuts for our Peanut Festival booth.

These are made of cotton print and are very attractive. They surely did sell well last year, and we're hoping we will have more of them this year.

Our June meeting has been changed to the first Wednesday in June, instead of the first Sunday. Please note that our June meeting will be held June 6th at 8 p.m. The July and August meetings will be on the first Sundays as scheduled.

Joe Bayer gave a report on the lodge history; some discussion followed.

LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY

May 9th at 7:30 p.m., President Bill Hutka called the lodge's meeting to order.

The pledge of allegiance was recited by all members.

All lodge officers were present.

President Hutka asked if there were any members or friends who were on the sick list or if there were any members in need of help. Sister Dorothy Massey stated that Mrs. W.S. Sammon, the mother of Carol Merideth, was in the hospital. Louis Driska stated that Joe Barabas of Lodge 80 is also in the hospital. The members of our lodge send their speedy recovery to all these sick members.

A thank-you note from the Senior Citizens of Temple, expressing their appreciation for the donation of game cards to the Harvest Home, was read.

May 21st, the Board of Trustees met with all the board members present.

The items brought up to the members

by Otis Beck, chairman, reported that the youth club received a check from the Ralph Wilsons for the popcorn sales, a thank-you note from Radio Station KTEM thanking the lodge for the $200 donation. The trustees discussed having a disco dance for the Academy School for May 25th, with all proceeds going toward the school to help buy furniture

12 for the new elementary school. With some discussion and other recommendations, the members accepted the recommendations.

President Hutka stated that the Barton Ming benefit was a huge success. The Ming family presented the lodge with a very beautiful plaque stating their appreciation to our lodge and of its members for their help and support for this benefit. We, the Lodge 177 members, would certainly like to thank the great bands that provided the music; they were Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five, the Journeymen, and the Gentres. Also, a thank you goes to the bar workers, the ticket workers, and the kitchen workers. THANK YOU! Youth Leader Bettye Hawk gave the youth report. She reported that the TV money-making project was a huge success and the club would like to have a party at the What-a-burger for June 2nd. The youth members will be giving the residents at Southern Manor Rest Home a birthday party June 23rd.

Bettye also stated that they will be going to Six Flags June 7th, so it looks like our youth club is really doing a fine job. All you parents get your children involved in your youth club because you cannot find a better activity for them.

Game Chairman Dorothy Massey gave a very good report. She then stated all proceeds from the special game night which was held Wednesday, May 16 are going to the Academy Schools.

Dorothy also expressed her many thanks to all the workers. She mentioned that Rick and Susan Beck have helped out tremendously.

The bar, ticket and kitchen chairmen also gave good reports with much progress being made at the lodge.

Entertainment Chairman Jerry Tomastik stated that the lodge is booked every Saturday night along with some Friday night dances. He further mentioned a new band, Country Roads from Austin, will make their first appearance at the lodge scheduled for May 19th.

On the inside our lodge has a new look. We have a new floor tile in the entry, a new carpet in the foyer and ticket office, also new tile in the men's bathrooms and kitchen. The area around the dance floor has been completed. Very soon the dance floor will be sanded and filled with a filler and waxed, so we would like to invite everyone to come see us.

The Party Planning Committee, J ackie Beck, chairman, brought up to the members about taking a trip to the Brazos Queen in Waco. A motion was made by Curtis Hawk and a second by D orothy Massey to take this trip. Jackie

will find out more about this trip and she will bring it up at the next meeting.

Under new business Youth Leader Bettye Hawk asked that the lodge charter a bus to Six Flags. A motion was made by Karen Balzer and it was seconded by Pat Tomastik. The youth and their chaperones will have a great trip to Six Flags.

Dorothy Massey reported that the sales representatives are doing a great job; she also made a motion that Wilbert Ramm, Bill Hutka and Curtis Hawk be new sales representatives for the lodge. Karen Balzer seconded the motion. The members accepted these new sales representatives.

It was decided to start having the dances from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. the ticket office will open at 7:30 p.m.

New members of Lodge 177 are: Heath Lee Norman, Christopher Michael Forrest, Bobby Glenn Forrest, Deborah Kay Forrest, Billy Glen Forrest, Dawn Michelle Barnes, Amy Barnes, Marilyn Gage, Roger Lynn Monk, Shannon Lee Dorres and William Stewart Dorres. 32, VICTORIA SPJST FESTIVAL PLANNED LODGE NO.

Dear Members: The second annual Czech Festival of Victoria has been set for Sunday, June 24th, at 1 p.m. It will be held at the Community Center, 2905 East North Street in Victoria.

There will be entertainment provided for everyone throughout the day.

The Victoria Czech Singers and the Gulf Coast Singers of Ganado will sing.

For recreation there will be an auction, country store, and cake walk held. You will also enjoy delicious kolache and barbecue sandwiches to eat, and a beer garden.

Additional entertainment will be held with a battle dance from 4 to 10 p.m., with music by the Leo Majek Orchestra of Corpus Cbristi , and the Plain Country of Victoria.

LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY

On behalf of Lodge 177, Academy, Sister Dorothy Massey had the honor of presenting Academy School Superintendent, Mr. Robert Hunt, a check for $400. This money will be used to help furnish the new addition to the school in Academy.

The lodge raised the money during a special fund-raising night at the hall with the proceeds going to the school.

Lodge 177 has made donations to several schools and organizations in this area.

The Academy Schools plan to start a fund-raising drive soon to raise the needed $15,000 to buy the furniture for the new facilities. The membership of Lodge 177 hopes this check will get them off to a good start and they can raise the needed funds quickly.

All members working this benefit night (as well as the other nights when the hall is open) contributed their time and energy to this worthy cause. A project of this kind cannot be done alone and all volunteer help is greatly appreciated and needed. Dear Members: The regular meeting of local Lodge No. 15 was held May 5th at the lodge hall at 8 p.m., with Brother Joe Zajicek presiding.

All officers were present.

After the recitation of the pledge of allegiance, a moment of silent prayer was held for our departed Brother Adolph Jurca. Our sympathy is extended to the bereaved family. May our, brother rest in peace.

Minutes were read by Charlsie Svetlik and they were approved as read.

Patricia Hillman gave the treasurer's report which also was accepted. All the

LODGE NO. 183, MID- CITIES Dear Readers: The monthly meeting was held Tuesday evening at the home of Steve and Diane Schneider in Arlington.

There were sixteen members present.

President Bernard Hlavaty led the group in the pledge of allegiance.

After the minutes were read and reports given, final plans were discussed for preparations for the chartering for May 20th. All members shared in accepting responsibilities for that day. Everything seemed to be taken care of; now, time will tell. It's been a new experience for all of us and, so far, we haven't done too badly.

After the meeting adjourned we enjoyed refreshments and visiting.

My next newsletter will contain the happenings of May 20th when Lodge 183 was chartered and a big day of celebrating took place at Lodge 180 in Burleson.

LODGE NO. :35, ELK

1)ear Members and Friends : The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 35 was called to order May 6th by President Henry Breitkreutz, Sr. The pledge of allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Sondra Dieterich.

President 13rettkreutz, Sr. welcomed our visitor, Tillie Matus. Come back, again.

Secretary Albert Banik was called on to read the minutes of the April meeting. They were approved. Brother Battik read a thank-you note from the Carl Pavlovsky family.

Treasurer Henry Breitkreutz, Jr. was then called on to give his report.

Youth Leader Rosemarie Banik

13 reported that fourteen children and two adults are going to camp this year and that all children be sure to fill out their cards for YAD. Sister Rosemarie then asked all who had a birthday in May to come forward. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Brothers Eugene Pavelka, Ed Holub and Sisters Rosie Blahuta and Tammy Hand. The birthday cake was brought by Dawn Pavelka.

It was voted on to take a bus to Longview on YAD June 24th. If you want to go contact Sister Rosemarie.

Committee reports were given by Peggy Dieterich—kitchen, Eugene Pavelka--entertainment, Henry Breitkreutz, Sr.--refreshments. They thanked everyone who helped them.

New members are Joan Michelle Hardwick and Steven Dulock. Paidup policyholders are Gaylon Dulock, Rudolph Vicha, Jr. Fred Mach and Scott Felton.

The Rules and Regulations Committee gave a report and suggested a few changes.

Last month we were sorry Sister Rosemarie resigned from the youth leader's position. This month we are all proud of her for taking it back.

Let's all give her a little more help with the children.

We have three members as District III officers : Brother Albert 13anik, treasurer; Sister Charlotte Banik, secretary; and Brother Henry Breit kreutz , Sr., second vice president.

There was a $25 memorial sent to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor, in memory of Brother Alvin Nesuda.

On the sick list we have Brother Fred Mach who is in the VA Hospital in Waco.

Our sympathy goes to the Jim Pavelkas on the loss of their loved one, Lillie (Pavelka) Paris, who passed away May 8th in the Marlin Hospital.

LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA Dear Members: If anyone is on the sick list, I trust they are doing well and get back in the swing of things. Lillia Mae Peter has been in the hospital and at this time, I do not know if she is at home or not.

It was very nice for Ann Bingham to help by writing to the Vestnik about our dances, etc. At the present time I cannot do very much writing and the newsbee sure cannot write, but you will be hearing from me from time to time.

I hope all the members are keeping up with their deeds and let me know about them, because this will make the report that our secretary has to turn in much easier.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY

Dear Members and Guests We had the Country Combinations to entertain our dancing fans. They are so excellent in their performance and playing most all dancing music.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bivin of 410 House in Lufkin really are professional polka dancers and have been here before several weeks ago; they stated that there are 18 to 30 couples who are members of a Polka Club in Lufkin. Since it was Mother's Day, May 13th, there were 3 mothers given a special recognition. They were Vita Harkins, being the youngest mother, received a beautiful corsage; Julia Albright, the oldest mother and SPJST member of our lodge, present and also Slivena Michka, with the most SPJST members in the family (9 children) and all members. Julia Albright had her children, members of Lodge No. 88, attend and there were also other

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The special dance Saturday night, May 12, with music by Ed Gerlach's orchestra, was not completely sold out, only a few places were unoccupied. The Chandelier Ballroom looked glamorous with the new decorations and all the beautifully dressed ladies. Since this was the night before Mother's Day, prizes were given to the oldest and the youngest mothers, also the one with the most children and the one with the most grandchildren; all the mothers received a big hand of applause from the attending guests. As usual, at every dance, free admission passes were drawn for the lucky number holder to attend a dance in the future; one thing was very noticable that very few members were present that night.

The Hosting Committee for that evening included Homer Alexander, in charge, with Rita, in a beautiful black chiffon, was at his side; Norval Crossman, who seated the guests, while his wife, Frances, in a silver grey chiffon, greeted the guests in the lobby while they were coming in. At the door were two lovely ladies who admitted the guests to the ballroom with a smile.

They were Lill Holley and Millie Manach, who were a picture of loveliness. It was a pleasant evening with everyone in such a good mood.

In the Blue Room the Karl Lindemann family surrounded their mother Lowrina. In a way it was a pre-Mother's Day celebration, but the attention was on the youngest member of the family:

Kristy not even two years old. I just couldn't keep my eyes off of her, Kristy is a show off, a regular ham and so cute and grandfather Karl and grandmother Lowrina, were just beaming with pride. Present were daughter Dianne, her husband Werner Sokol and their first-born daughter Kelly; she is the pitcher for the T-Ball players. I hear that she is a pretty good one, too. The Lindemanns' son Bruce, their handsome eligible bachelor, was in company with a beautiful young lady, Barbara.

Karl serves on the Board of Trustees and is chairman of the Social Night Committee. Lowrina also serves on that committee and is a sales representative for Lodge 88.

Mother's Day was observed by many because all the eating places were filled. The Amos Kadlecek children treated their mother Della, with a dinner at Prochaska's Restaurant. My children took me to the Cellar Door here in Houston; of course, I was sporting an orchid as many mothers did that day.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Kupka of Praha, Czechoslovakia arrived April 27th and have been house guests of Tim and Rosalee Kostom. While the Kostoms were on their cruise for one week (April 28 through May 5), Mr. and Mrs. Kupka were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Vacek and toured the surrounding towns of Houston visiting friends. Their visit is coming to a close because they arc leaving for New York, May 21st and will fly over the big pond back to Czechoslovakia. Their daughter Slavinka, with her husband visited here last year from Germany. It was a pleasure to see this lovely couple after 14 years when we met them in Praha.

Sunday, June 3rd, the swimming pool will officially open on Splash Day; that day will be full of activities for 'the youngesters and the older generation will not be left out. The main event will be the Beauty Contest sponsored by the youth club; you need not be a youth club member to enter. Registration for ages 1 through 17 years starts at 12 noon.

Judging will be at 1 p.m. at the Gazebo.

Anyone interested may join in and compete for the prizes.

At our monthly lodge meeting, we were honored to have guests Mr. and Mrs. J. Kupka, Mr. and Mrs. J. Souchek, Mr. Mitchel and again we were happy to have Sister Albina Hilsher. We appreciate the interest of our guests to sit in on our meetings; come, again!

On the sick list reOrted were: Sister Willie Mae Powell, who is still in unstable condition. Brother Ludwig Mikes, member of the Entertainment

Committee, is in the Diagnostic Hospital after a heart attack; his wife, Marian, also serves on this committee as treasurer. Brother Henry Hruby is in the Southwest Hospital, also was stricken with a heart attack. Sister Frances Walla was operated on and is confined in the St. Joseph Hospital.

Sister Sue High, president of the Birthday Club, is still on the sick list and was unable to attend this month's Birthday Club meeting Wednesday, May 9th. (Vice President Pearl Hanka conducted the meeting and also read the club's financial report in the lodge meeting Monday, May 14th). To all these ailing members we wish a speedy. recovery.

Two wedding anniversaries were announced. Brother John and Clara Broz celebrated their 30th; and Brother Gene and Georgie Bacak held a candle to 16 years of their marriage. Both couples are very active members.

Johnnie Broz serves on the Board of Trustees and Clara helps wherever needed. Gene Barcak also serves on the Board of Trustees and is in charge of the kitchen. Georgie serves on the Entertainment Committee and their children are all involved in the youth club.

After the meeting, as usual, a nice social was enjoyed with delicious cold cuts served by our devoted kitchen manager, Sister Annie Vala and the refreshments from the bar were all enjoyed.

Coming Events: Saturday, June 16th, our annual Hawaiian dance will take place with a good floor show. Sunday, July 22nd, the Blue Room will sponsor their party. More information on this soon.

Brother E.J. Geistman has returned home from the hospital. We wish you a speedy recovery and hope you can be with us soon.

Sister LaVerne Cabla gave the board report. After a little discussion, it was approved.

Sisters LaVerne Cabla, Regina Zabcik and Bernice Sebek are on the committee to have a get-together honoring the 50-year members. They decided we would have dinner July 15th, a time has not been set, yet, but please keep this Sunday open. You will be asked to bring a covered dish and a dessert. I will have more on this event later.

Members had another discussion on the Rules and Regulations concerning the renting of the hall; as time goes on, it will probably change.

We have two high school graduates from our lodge that I know of; they are Alan Tyroch from Rogers High and Dennis Marek from Cameron High, also Weldon Schiller is graduating from college. I want to congratulate each of you on your accomplishment in life, and 1 can promise you this will be one of the most memorable events you will have in your lifetime. The members decided to have an ice-cream party after the meeting Wednesda y , June 13th honoring the

graduates. If I failed to list your name and you are graduating from some school, please come to the next meeting. Members are asked to bring a freezer of ice-cream or cake.

Monthly reports were given by all .the committee chairmen, except the Entertainment Committee, and all were approved.

New member this month is Mr. Mark Schuch. We welcome you to our lodge and hope you join in on the activities.

A committee was assigned to divide up $1,000 to various organizations as donations. Those on the committee were Daniel Sebek, Ben Zabcik and Ben Tyroch; they came up with the following distributions : Muscular Distrophy $100 Bell County Junior Livestock Show --- $100 Crippled Children's Center in Gonzales --- $200 American Heart Association $100 American Cancer Association $100 Easter Seals --- $100 MHMR in Temple --- $100 Lodge 24 Youth Club --- $200 These donations were approved by the members.

The youth club will have a hayride May 24th at 7 p.m. All members will meet at the hall. You are asked to bring some type of snack.

Brother John Blinka has had eye surgery recently but is doing nicely and is back at the Fort Bend Nursing Home.

New policies issued were to Gregory Paul Sprta, Michael Kelley, Robert Wayne Rehak, and a renewal to Edwin J. Kaluza. We welcome all of you to our lodge.

Refund checks were handed out and the attendance prize was won by Sister Aleene Zwahr.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our Thursday night, May 10th game in Richardson, Texas was rained out (promptly at 7:15 p.m.) just before starting time.

Wednesday night, May 16th, we played the Perdue Paint Contractors team at 6:30 p.m. at Kiest Diamond No. 1, and we won by a score of 6 to 1.

Lionel Schulz, our pitcher, hurled another fine game allowing 6 hits, 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. The team played flawless ball afield and turned two double plays in a fine team performance.

ANNUAL CAMPOUT

Dear Members and Friends : Once again, Lodge 130 in Dallas, had its annual pilgrimage in the form of our weekend campout and, once again, the unanimous opinion was that this was the best ever. We spent a perfect Mother's Day weekend at Ft. Parker State Park. The fact that Limestone County was under a flood warning after 6" of rain didn't dampen our spirits a bit ! Our group camp area was the only part of the park that wasn't under water.when we arrived -- but the campout went on!

My only regret is that more of our members couldn't attend. I was constantly wishing for everyone to be there to enjoy the beautiful companionship of friends and nature that we were experiencing. The rain washed the skies clean and Saturday and Sunday the perfect weather sparked many a hiker and fisherman into frenzied activity. The flood had covered our fishing pier with 9 feet of water, but by Saturday evening the

water subsided enough so the pier could be used for fishing as intended instead of a swimming pool for our younger campers. Nature trails kept luring us on after the freshening rains, and the wild flowers -- oh! the wildflowers ! They beckoned from every corner with a riot of color.

Everyone attending soon found his "niche". Crafts were available for those who wanted them. "Li'l Chick" recipe holders made perfect gifts to be presented to the mothers. We also learned charted embroiders and you'd think we had our "sici krouzek" with everyone, boys and girls, learning the stitches.

The food was entirely too good and we all ate entirely too much, but the high point of the weekend was the "Circus Party" Saturday night. There were clowns and tight rope walkers and bareback riders and gymnasts and jugglers and popcorn vendors and magicians (oops, Mike! ) -- the full three rings. We were entertained with games, skits from each cabin. The ladies did a fantastic version of Elaine Powers Exercise Class, the girl's cabin pulled a good one on Danny Vrla with their flower skit, but the inimitable vocal band presented by Stanley Vrla and Arnold Vrla was hard to beat--even though we wanted to (beat them). As usual "Madame Crappie" (Babi Vrla) stole the show coming as a gypsy fortune teller. She was an absolute knockout. The inspirational Sunday morning devotional topped off a perfect weekend.

How do you hold on to a weekend like that? Even tape recorders and cameras, which we had, could not capture the happiness we experienced.

What we need to do is all of us embrace and thank one another for all the help, because like the ingredients of a recipe, the outing would not have been complete if anyone there were missing. Our youth leaders, Kathy Pottkotter and Sherri Vrla, spent hours and days planning with the youth club, and their efforts were evident at every turn. If "fraternalism is a family affair" well -- we got it! Our SPJST family is just the finest group of people ever, and we are so lucky to have one another. To be related by friendship is the most beautiful relationship of all. The weekend is but a memory now, but one we will all treasure until our next campout, already planned for the 30th of November. A general thank you to everyone -- family (Sabi Vrla had 4 generations attending) and friends.

[C E S A T] Dear Editor: As president of the Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas, I would like to comment on a letter which appeared in the May 9, 1979 issue of Vestnik. Mr. Bob Skocpol wrote that CESAT has pledged a contribution to the fund at Rice University to start a Czech language course. That is an error.

CESAT has not made a decision whether or not to aid the Czech program at Rice. We certainly wish the students at Rice success in their efforts and hope that the Czech people in that area give their support.

SUMMER CZECH CLASSES

AT SPJST LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON We are planning, pending the Board's approval, to meet again this summer for Czech classes at the SPJST Lodge No. 88 in Houston. We already have twenty-five students signed up.

The classes will begin Monday, June 18th. Interested students may register on that day also. There will be a First Beginner's class from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; then a Second Beginner's class from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; and finally, a Conversational class from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

The cost is $25 per student and this includes all the necessary learning materials. The course will last eight weeks.

SL Vice President Gebala reported District IV sold $426 million insurance with Bro. Broz leading in fifth place in the state. There are 103 new members.

Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas gave a financial report of the Supreme Lodge, stating there are 55 thousand certificates in force.

Vestnik Editor discussed the organization of district meetings and their purpose, stating Supreme Lodge did not favor them at first in 1952 but that he, with Bro. Stephen Valcik, and others believed holding district meetings gave members a democratic voice and a more direct contact with Supreme Lodge.

Bro. Sefcik reiterated Bro. Mikulas' statement of up-dating the Vestnik mailing list. Bro. Sefcik said the 15,000 Vestniks printed and mailed cost the Society nearly $100,000 last year; so far sixty percent of the membership has responded in favor of receiving the Vestnik. Those not responding will be dropped from the mailing list.

Director Broz presented District IV Treasurer Bro. Raymond Pavliska with two checks from Supreme Lodge: $250 for the District Fund and $500 for the Youth Fund. Director Broz said SPJST and the district had a good year in sales. He reported on loans in the district. He also stressed the importance of lodges mailing their activity reports to Supreme Lodge. He thanked Lodge 160 for hosting the Meeting.

District IV youth counselor, Sister Mary Haisler, gave a comprehensive report on the youth program - their activities and finances. She stated that not enough young certificate holders are participating and taking advantage of the splendid program extended by SPJST. She said Districts IV and I will go to camp together again. The Youth Achievement Day will be held June 12, 1979 at Seymour; State YAD August 26 at Temple High School; and State Royalty September 29th in Burleson.

District IV rest homes director, Bro. Emil Havlak, reported on meeting with the directors April 21st, the condition and needs of the homes. He stated that the residents have the best care available, and both houses have full occupancy. He spoke of his years of service and that he had wished to retire since there is no compensation for food or lodging. He said they have been advanced mileage compensation from 15 cents to 20 cents in light of gas price increases.

The five- cent assessment per member in the district was discussed and explained that each lodge send their checks to District IV Treasurer Raymond Pavliska, (73), 505 South Cedar, Seymour, Texas 76380. The secretary is to write each lodge secretary reminding them of dues and also publish this reminder, to all lodge secretaries, in the Vestnik. Bro. Pavliska will then reimburse the host lodge for expenses incurred in holding the district meeting.

New Business - Election of officers Second Vice President Arthur Lisso presided over the election of president.

Bro. Laddie Socha nominated Bro. Ernest Kristinek, Jr. for president.

Havlak answered that the homes are considered a charitable organization and are not owned by SPJST. Editor Sefcik stated the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes are the best in Texas and suggested that the district help pay the directors' expenses. Bro. Lisso moved Bro. Havlak be elected by acclamation. Sis. Walther seconded the motion. The motion passed. Bro. Havlak (49) accepted for another year.

For youth counselor, Sis. Pelzel moved Sister Mary Haisler be elected by acclamation. Bro. Lisso seconded the motion. The motion passed. Sis. Haisler (73) was re-elected district youth counselor. Sis. Haisler appointed Sis. Henrietta Pavliska (73) as her assistant.

For flag bearer, Sis. Pavliska nominated Greg Blankenship. The motion was seconded by Bro. Raymond Pavliska. The motion was seconded and passed. Greg Blankenship is our new flag bearer.

Vice President Gebala installed the incoming officers in a brief ceremony.

Mr. Hruska is not new to this area, having been born and brought up in Fayetteville. He was manager of Advance Process Supply Company of Houston, a silk screen printing supply house, for many years. He will remain with the company in an advisory capacity.

Mrs. Hruska is a native of Bell County. She is an advertising copywriter and freelance photographer and has worked, for a number of years, at directing and staging beauty pageants and other theatrical productions.

BICE CZECH CLUB FORMED Dave Hruska and his sister, Beth (Hruska) Gamble. They are working to get Lakeside Garden at Park ready.

Dave is building picnic tables and Beth is hanging a new sign.

NEW CLUB TO OPEN "Lakeside Garden at Park" is the name of the newly-remodeled country and western entertainment facility at the old landmark. It will open Saturday night, June 2, and will be open every Saturday night through September.

Park is a community on the new lake, off Highway 159 between LaGrange and Fayetteville in Fayette County.

Leroy and Hedy Hruska will operate the newly constructed beer garden and original dance hall, with the help of their son, Dave, and their daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Greg Gamble. (The Hruskas are members of Houston Lodge 88.)

"We have new outdoor seating for 500 and seating inside the hall for another 200," Mr. Hruska said. "New restrooms have been built, landscaping and fencing are nearly completed, and we've lighted our big oak trees.

The original saloon and dance hall have been left just as they've always been, except for painting and other minor improvements. We hope other people will like it as much as we do."

Bobby Heiman and The Hi-Country will open on June 2, to be followed in June by The Hayslip Brothers, The Rhythm Wranglers, Brand New Country, and Adolph Hofner and The Pearl Wranglers. The Rice Student Association has now officially approved the formation of a Czech Club at Rice University. We have 10 official members already, and have elected a president, vice-presi7 dent, and secretary-treasurer. The members include students of Czech heritage, and other interested students, too. Plans are being made to set up a boot h\in the Activities Fair during next year'S Freshman Orientation Week, to interest new students - in taking one of the two Czech courses offered at Rice next fall.

Other good news kora Rice is that an official Czech Course Fund has been set up on the Rice University Computer, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Roy Jones of the Department of German and Russian. It already has $100 in it, thanks to the generosity of Bishop Morkovsky. The fund will be used to help pay for the two Czech courses at .Rice in the fall, and, if enough funds can be found, to insure' the future of the teaching of Czech at Rice. TEMPLE JUNIOR COLLEGE Public Information Office Mrs. Susan Rowe, Director Two courses in Russian have been added to the summer night class schedule at Temple Junior College.

Beginning Russian I and"Beginner's Russian II will be offered at TJC for the first time during the 1979

eight-week summer session.

Beginning Russian I is a four semester hour credit course and will meet from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The course is designed for people who have no background in Russian or any other Slavic (Slavonic) language.

Beginning Russian is a study of standard elementary grammar and beginning reading materials. The course is designed to develop early conversational ability and includes oral and written exercises. The language laboratory will be available for class preparation.

Beginners Russian II is a two semester hour credit course and will meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on , Tuesdays and Thursdays. The course is designed for people who have some background in Russian, Czech or other.

Slavic language. Both courses will, include some Russian history and culture as it relates to the language.

James W. Mendl, Jr. will teach both sessions which will meet simultaneously for the last three hours. Mendl holds a bachelor's degree in Czech from Texas A&M University and a master's degree in Slavic languages and literature from the University of Texas at Austin. He has taught Czech. at TJC since 1975.

"The Czech language is sometimes considered a stepping stone to learning Russian and other Slavic languages," Calvin Chervenka, Slavic languages coordinator, said. "English. and Czech use similar Latin-rooted. alphabets so that it is relatively easy , to learn word spellings and pronunciations necessary for acquiring a Slavic vocabulary and grammar. Similarity . of the Czech and Russian vocabularies then permits concentration of effort on learning the Russian which uses the vastly different Cryllic alphabet."

Chervenka said the U.S. government has designated Russian as a critical language and that there is an increasing need in government and international trade for persons who, speak Russian; also, Russian has, become the second language, next to English, for communication in the pure and applied sciences.

"For these reasons the TJC Russian courses are expected to be of interest to many people in the greater Temple area who are engaged in governmental, medical and soil science , professions, as well as other TJC1 students," Chervenka said. "Anyone who feels he would like world travel as a part of his career would do well to consider Russian as a second language."

20 'Next fall TJC will offer Beginning Russian I, Beginning Russian II (the second half of the course ) and Introduction to Slavic Folklore which is a study of the migrations of the Sla y s from Europe and Asia to the U.S. and an introduction to the Slavic culture concentrating on folkloric literature.

Summer classes begin June 4.

LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Readers, The Robstown Youth Club held their annual lake trip and initiation. May 5th, the members went by bus to Lake Corpus Christi.

Chairman of the Membership Committee Edwin McDonald held the initiation of new members. The members were made to do a number of various funny things, but all things were done in good spirits.

After the initiation, games were played by all present. Swimming was enjoyed by all of us. A picnic supper was then held and the return trip started. This is one of our annual events.

THE FINE ARTS

By Frances McDonald Age 15 Rt. 2, Box 899, Corpus Christi, Tx. Lodge No. 117 Robstown The first few centuries of the Christian era were a troubled period in Central Europe. The Roman Empire fell and the lengthy struggles between the Germanic and Slav tribes led to continuous upheavals. The Czech and Slovak tribes governed over the area in about the 6th Century A.D. and between the 9th and 10th centuries some national identity was achieved.

There are some artistic remains of the early Slav nation preserved in the maj or museums of Czechoslovakia.

The leading museums : National Museum at Prague, with large collections of art, manuscripts, early printed books ; Strakov Monastery, with collections of religious art; Waldstein Palace Museum at Prague, with collections of military souvenirs ; Industrial Museums in Brno and Olomouc, with collections of Czech and Moravian handicrafts.

Romanesque Art spread across Central Europe in the 11th and 12th Centuries, characterized by the rich outline of the exterior(towers), the

21 clear organization of the interior (bays ), heavy walls, small windows, and the use of open timber roofs and groin. Its forms were brought from the West by Christian missionaries and World Boat Traders in 1844.

Prague was described as a prosperous town in the 10th century by a traveler. He described the town with buildings of stone. By the 12th century, Prague contained churches built in styles derived from France and Germany. The Abbey at Olomouc was an important Romanesque building, parts of which still remain.

The 10th century marked the beginning of the great tradition of Czech miniature painting, in particular Bohemian book illumination. The best known of the Bohemian illumination is the Codex Vysehradensis or Vysehrad Gospel Book, dating lops and now is in the State Library of Czechoslovakia, Prague.

In the 13th and 14th centuries, th'e Gothic style was introduced into Czechoslovakia by the great monastic orders in particular the Cistercian's(monks and nuns) and Benedictines (Order of Monks), whose convents and churches were built in the new style.

In Trebic in Moravia, the Benediel tines erected a church of Gothfe Architecture. This building has three apses (a vaulted semicircle or polygonal recess in a building), three spacious naves (the main body or middle part lengthwise of a church) and a porch flanked by two towers.

The central apse, lower than the rest of the building is surmounted by an octagonal cupola.

Tabor, in Bohemia, which the Hussite Movement originated, is a fine example of a late Gothic town. The original layout of the town, with small blocks of houses set around the main square with its civic and religionS buildings has been preserved.

The Cistercians, who introduced the Burgundian Gothic style of architecture, were alone responsible for the decorative Gothic sculptures.

The church of St. Vitus is thought to be the finest example of French-in= spired Gothic work in Central Europe.

It was begun before 1350 by Mathieu d'Arras and continued after his death in 1352 by Peter Parler.

In the 14th century, Gothic style gradually replaced the Romanesque in sculpture. "Madonna and Child", carved of wood is now in the Mikolas Gallery in Hluboka. The "beautiful Madonna" style was the sculptural form of a style common in Continued on page 28

My jsme jim za to ze srdce vdeeni. Tez jsme poznali maniele Rose a Earl Fuhs z Wellington, Kansas. painting in the middle of the 14th century. The carvings of this_ period were characterized by a striving for abstract, formal beauty, expressed in the distant impersonal smile on the face of the Madonna.

In the later part of the 15th century, sculpture consisted mainly of variations on the "beautiful" style and it was influenced by German work.

Renaissance Architecture spread in Bohemia after the Hapsburg rulers took up residence in Prague in the middle of the 15th century. German and Italian craftsmen, brought to Czechoslovakia by the court, were responsible for such buildings as the Royal Mausoleum in St. Vitus, Prague erected between 1564 and 1589.

In the middle of the 17th century, after the period of religious conflict, Czechoslovakia had taken on a Baroque aspect.

One of the finest in the 17th century is the Palace in Czechoslovakia is considered to be that at Hradcany, Prague. This building has a massive facade with heavy columns set on elongated pedestals.

Two of the most important Czech Baroque painters were Petr Brandt (1668-1735) and Jan Kupecky (16671740 ). Brandt painted religious works and Kupecky was a portrait painter.

He worked in Rome and at the imperial court in Vienna. His best works are the portraits of the burghers 'pf Prague and Nurenburg.
