FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK In last week's editorial, column one, page one, we explained how the "Proceedings" of the last SPJST convention read and what was stipulated in them and everything is substantiated with the exception of an error in typesetting and proofreading.

The eighth (8th) line from the bottom of column 1, page 1, read: (directors, DYC's, etc. received $60 a the word should have been receive; see how a single letter (d in this case) can change the meaning of what is written? We regret the oversight.

SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska called us and we would like to clarify the facts as they actually exist pertaining to the district directors.

Although the convention proceedings allow those expenses in "services of the Society:' Brother Mikeska gave us the following information: the directors do not charge per diem for attending district meetings and/ or SR banquets and some may charge the 15 cents per mile travel and some do not. We hope this clears the statement made; the member, who had originally mentioned the fact, requested that we explain what the convention delegates had alloted and we had attempted to do so. We thank Brother Mikeska for calling our attention to the error. ..

traveling all the way. The banquet was very nice and, for friendliness, District IV members are at the top of the list in fraternalism!- We enjoyed the fellowship, meal, congeniality and humor and then headed for the District IV meeting at Wall Fire Dept. at 2 p.m.

The meeting was efficiently conducted by District IV President Ernest Kristinek, Jr. and reports were brief and to the point. We enjoyed both the banquet and the meeting and visiting with our members "way out west" in Texas. SL officers Vice-President Gebala and Financial-Secretary Mikulas represented our Supreme Lodge at both occasions very capably and

efficiently. Pictures appear in this issue. ** .. Sunday, April 29th we attended the District III meeting hosted by Lodge No. 66 at their home in Elm Mott.

District III President Hugo Kocian convened the meeting at the precise time of 11 a.m. and took care of much of the district business before adjourning for the noon meal at 12:10.

While we enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the very capable sisters and brothers of Lodge No. 66, who possess very able culinary abilities, the youth club of Lodge No. 66 entertained us with a very nice and musical program. Then President Kocian re-convened the meeting early and it was adjourned at 1:40 p.m. so that, those who wished to do so, could attend the funeral of Brother Alvin Nesuda, DSR of District III, at 3:30 p.m. in Ennis the same day. Brother Kocian was one of the pallbearers. The meeting was enj oyable, brief, wellconducted, the reports capably presented and the audience attentive.

District III Secretary Barbara Hykel will have more particulars in her minutes. The spirit of the meeting was somewhat dampened, naturally, by Br. Nesuda's death. ** .. Our SPJST Society membership paid their final tribute to one of their faithful, longtime, sincere and loyal co-workers on that Sunday and that was visible by the large turnout of

Sunday, May 13 is Mother's Day. This essay is a beautiful tribute to these very special people.

TO ALL MOTHERS Mothers come in assorted shapes and sizes. They are wrapped in a protective film of forgiveness with a lifelong guarantee against the countless transgressions of their offspring.

They are dependable in every stage of their usefulness, performing equally as well when their charges are crab size or king size.

When new, mothers possess a remarkable endurance for routine plus a built-in ability to understand behavior phases and baby talk. Their exteriors withstand playful hair pulling, lap wriggling, and wet noses on freshly powdered faces. They are ever alert to danger and no amount of distraction can sway their vigilance.

This quality is fully automatic, springing from a well-grounded organ called the heart.

Mothers reach their peak of power with demands requiring j udgement and guidance. The growing maturity of their children shifts their responsibility into high gear. Still as vigilant, only of different dangers, they develop an extra ear for catching the beginnings of disaster. These findings are then analyzed for possible correction. All this is done without stopping the day and night service that includes, without additional charge, every task from chauffering to helping with homework.

The heart continues to perform at this stage. For topnotch results this mechanism should be oiled frequently with fullstrength understanding.

When top speed is no longer necessary, mothers transfer their active processes into other channels but it should be noted that their living processes go on indefinitely.

Tempered by the wise application of advice, these loving processes give

Wednesday, May 9, 1979 impetus to another generation. This reliable cycle is repeated again and again insuring 'mankind of at least one factor that cannot be destroyed. Yes, to many a youth and teenager, mother may seem protective and for old-fashioned, however, you will be a parent some day. Would you want to continue as foolishly or be more adult like mother? Ask yourself that question and consider your answer! ** .. The following was sent to your editor one year ago this May by my sister Sister Lydia Hendrick of Houston; it was written by Robert I. Kahn, rabbi of Houston's Temple Emanu El. With Mother's and Father's Days in our near future we feel it fitting to reprint same. Think about the message!

I first came to Texas more than 40 years ago. I had been ordained in late May, spent June at home with my parents, and was due in Houston on July 1st.

While I was packing, my mother came into my room and sat watching me. And then she said, "Bob, you're going far away from us ( and it will be difficult for you to find time to visit home. There will always be something coming up that will prevent your making the trip, and so you will put if off. But there is something I want yoeto remember: If you were to get a message, God forbid, that Dad or I had died suddenly, or had been in a fatal accident, you would drop everything you are doing and come home immediately. Bob, if you can do it for us when we are dead, you can do it for us while we are still alive."

I have never forgotten those words, and I have tried to live by them. I have gone home to visit as often as I could, oftener than it was easy to do.

Even so, there are times when I make plans for a visit and then have to give it up, or times when my visit was shorter than they wanted. And sometimes I say, "Well, maybe next month." But if next month were to be too late, I would feel some deep regrets.

Emerson speaks to this situation: "You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late."

Emerson was not only speaking to the children of parents, he was speaking to all of us. For we all have friends and acquaintances whom we hold in affection, and we all have good intentions toward them.

We plan to get over to see them,

someday.

We plan to have them over to our house, someday.

We see a book we would like to give them, someday.

We think of a sweet act we could do for them, someday.

And sometimes the someday comes, and sometimes it does not.

This is particularly important when it involves older people. Parents, obviously, and so many of our friends who are in the twilight years, whose days are numbered.

"We cannot do them a kindness too soon, for we never know how soon it may be too late."

DISTRICT IV AWARDS BANQUET

LODGE NO. 183, MID-CITIES Dear Readers : Sunday, April 29th, the SPJST District 111 meeting was held at Lodge No. 66, Linden Hall. Members attending from Lodge 183, Mid-Cities included President Bernard Hlavaty, his wife, Betty, Financial Secretary Daniel Roznovsky, his wife, Mary Ann, and Treasurer Inez Greenlees.

Due to the death of District III Sales Representative Alvin Nesuda, the attendance was rather small. Hugo Kocian, the presiding officer, asked that business conducted during the meeting be kept as brief as possible so that the ones wishing to attend Brother Alvin's funeral would have time to do so.

During the break for dinner we enjoyed delicious pit-cooked barbecue chicken and all the trimmings, dessert, tea and coffee. The men of Lodge 66 really outdid themselves in preparing the barbecue. Great job fellas ! The ladies likewise provided the delicious pastries. We enjoyed every bit of it. While we were eating dinner the youth entertained us with a poem and several musical selections on the piano and flute, etc. Very nice!

After the meal was finished the meeting was resumed. Lodge 183, Mid-Cities being a new lodge with a youth group, was presented a check in the amount of $25 from the District III Youth Fund. President Hlavaty accepted the check and thanked District III since Diane Schneider, the youth leader, was not present. We had no idea of this presentation beforehand, so it came as quite a pleasant • surprise. Thank you.

New officers were elected for the next District III meeting to be held in October at Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

We look forward to attending this fall meeting.

After adjournment of the meeting we departed for Ennis where we attended the funeral of Brother Alvin Nesuda. It appeared all the lodges in District 111 were represented as they

Wednesday, May 9, 1979 paid their last respects to Alvin. The eulogy delivered by SPJST SL President Nick Morris was spiritual, very sincere and very beautiful.

Excerpts from selected poems added extra solemnity to this final tribute to Alvin Nesuda, a very deserving person. We will all miss Alvin, but we can find consolation knowing Alvin suffers no more.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Wilma, his beloved wife, his three children, grandchild and loved ones.

Following the funeral procession and hearing the final prayers at the cemetery, we departed for home.

Dear Members : We held our monthly meeting for April. There were quite a few members present. We had two special guests Mr. and Mrs. Smith from Waco.

Mr. Smith has been supportive of us from the beginning of our lodge. We really appreciate all he and his wife have done.

There were fifteen new members approved and voted upon. LODGE NO. 88 NEWS The western dance Friday, April 27th was fairly attended and was hosted by Herbert Huber in charge of the evening and the box office. His wife, Gazela, with Rita Alexander and Della Kite greeted the guests, while Homer and Henry were busy seating the guests.

The polka band Saturday, April 28th with music by Leroy Matocha also had a fair crowd. In charge of that evening was Charles Evetts with his father, Dean Evetts, in the box office and wife, Faye, with Mary Foreman at the door.

At the Friday night dance, three Tables Nos. 12, 13 and 14 held lots of surprises for Seth Duncan, celebrating his birthday coming up May 4th. Seth and Ruth Duncan were guests of friend, Doris Starkey, who arranged the surprise for Seth's birthday. His children, grandchildren and friends surrounded the three tables. Not one btft two decorated birthday cakes appeared with lighted candles for Seth to blow out with a wish and gifts galore; best of all he loved the fishing equipment. The spread of goodies on

the three tables was enjoyed by all.

Saturday, at Table No. 7, a wedding anniversary was observed by friends of Ben and Mildred Schulte. They were married April 27, 1946 and were showered with good wishes and good food and everyone had a ball. Mildred and Ben reared two daughters, Carole and Gale, and now they spend lots of time to entertain as grandparents to Gale's two children who are four and one year of age. Happy Anniversary!

Brother Jerry Pokorny has his son, Radomir Pokorny, from Praha, Czechoslovakia visiting here in the states for 45 days. Radomir is enjoying his visit driving his father's car through several states and enjoying' them all. Before he will join his father here in Houston, the speedometer will add at least 5,000 miles. Jerry was feeling under the weather with the flu bug and was unable to make the trip with his son, but is glad Radomir has a good time seeing our country. Dorothy Muras of Shiner, Texas accompanied Jerry at the Saturday dance. He was feeling better but looked pale.

Sister Louise Knapick McGregor is a proud mother because ger son, Mike

Knapick, graduates from University of Texas Medical Branch in May and will serve as intern at John Sealy Hospital and will specialize in Pediatrics. Mike is married to the former Debbie Marek, the daughter of Jackie and Bennie Marek. Mike and Debbie have two lovely children, Jennifer age two and Jill two-monthsold. Louise is very grateful and feels she owes Lodge 88 a debt of gratitude for its support in helping her raise Mike. (Louise served as youth leader and has done a very good job.) We don't see her very often because she and her husband live out of town. This Saturday they both enjoyed the hospitality of our Blue Room.

A regular visitor to our Blue Room, Brother Tom Mora was missed tonight.

(Saturday, April 28) and for a very good reason; his daughter, Terry Lynn, gave birth to a husky baby boy in Memorial City Hospital and named him Thomas Andrew after his grandfather Tom. It is the first born to this yoUng couple, Terry Lynn and Cavin Tackette, and, of course, the pride of grandfather Tom A. Mora.

Congratulations!

Sister Corine Herman is home after her second eye operation and doing fine. Two weeks ago she had an cateract implant in the Twelve Oaks Hospital with very good results, the operation was successful and both of her eyes have 20-20 vision. Heinrich, her husband, is also happy with the results.

Sister Mary Kosut is at home for one week to rest while her doctor is out of town; but, as soon as he will be back, she will be taking more therapy because this is the first time she felt some relief from her terrible headaches. Brother Ed Kadlecek looks terrific, but he will have to follow the doctor's orders, which is hard for Ed because he always was ready to tackle anything. Louise is taking good care of him and seeing to it that he doesn't overdo it. Brother Albert Bristik is now residing in the Northwest Nursing Home; he gets around in his wheelchair. Elenora, his devoted wife, spends most of her time with Albert to comfort him. Sister Lillie Spies, our Birthday Club treasurer, had tests made, April 18, at the Heights Hospital and came home on the 23rd to attend a family wedding. Lillie will have gallbladder surgery Tuesday, May 1st.

Don't forget the monthly lodge meeting Monday, May 14th at 7:30 p.m. After the meeting a social is held with refreshments and snacks.

OF AMERICAN SOKOL ORGANIZATION

Dear Brothers and Sisters : The Southern District, American Sokol Organization, will hold its Slet this year in Ennis, June 8, 9, and 10th.

We are looking forward to a big Slet and hope to see all Sokols and Sokol friends at this event.

Slet festivities will begin on Friday, June 8th, with Volleyball Championships at 7:30 p.m. The games will be played at St. John's High School Gym on South Paris Street. Family night entertainment will continue that evening at the Sokol Gymnastic Center for the convenience of our members, friends, and out-of-town guests who wish to gather.

Apparatus competitions will be held Saturday. The Men's Department (little boys, junior boys, and men) will compete at the Sokol Gymnastic Center on Highway 34 East of Ennis.

The Women's department (little girls, junior girls, and women) will compete at the St. John's High School Gym. The Victory Dance will be at 9 p.m.

Saturday evening at the Sokol with music by Johnny Mensik. Competi-

tions' Awards for the Juniors and Seniors will be presented at 10 p.m.

Sunday, rehearsals will be held in the morning, dinner will be served at noon, and the Slet program will be at 2 p.m. All of these activities will be at the Sokol. Musical accompaniment for the Slet program will be by Bro. Sid Pokladnik and the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra.

ASSOCIATION OF TEXAS [C E S A TI Dear CESAT Members: Our annual meeting for 1979 will be held this year at SPJST Lodge 29 in Taylor, Texas, May 26 at 10:30 a.m.

This meeting is especially important for several reasons. First of all, our status with the Internal Revenue Service has cleared up and Raymond Prasatik will have a report on that.

Secondly, the amendments to the constitution, which we approved at Moravia last year, have been incorporated into the constitution by the Executive Committee and, therefore, we may initiate new actions under the provisions of those amendments. Also, we will have the most important task of choosing new leaders for next year.

I think you will agree that 1979-1980 should be a year of great change and progress for the Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas. To achieve this,

FUND NEEDED FOR CZECH COURSE AT RICE UNIVERSITY The students of Rice University's first and only Czech class are trying to establish a Czech course fund. Melvin Skrabanek reported Needville tax appeal case was refused to be heard in New Orleans. Mr. Harvey Marx is the new administrator in Needville. He urged people wanting residency at nursing homes to please place their names with the administrators because there is a waiting list.

Jerry Mikulas representing Supreme Lodge said Brother Nick Morris was unable to attend due to the services of Alvin Nesuda. He then reported 1978 was the biggest year withh 11 million and 55,000 certificates and 40,000 members, 129 million of life insurance and 26 million assets, and 20 million in liability.

Explaining the postcards on Vestnik requests, if the card was returned members will continue getting the Vestnik; 34 percent have not returned the cards.

Checks for $250 Officers' Expenses and $1,457.50 for Youth Fund were presented by Bro. Jerry Mikulas from the Supreme Lodge.

DYC Melinda Wilson reported YAD would be in Centerville Saturday, June 16th; Camp would be held on August 10 through 13th. The youth leaders met in Centerville April 28th, and a "Circus" theme was decided on and hopes of a three-ring circus would be at camp.

Four cakes were auctioned by Mr. Rudy Hafner and netted the youth club $96.

King Bob Mikulin of 13, Dime Box and Queen Deidra Kocurek of 169, Brenham were introduced.

A motion was made by Melvin Skrabanek to continue the one meeting per year in spring, and it was seconded and was passed unanimously.

Melvin Skrabanek nominated Donnie Victorick for president and he was elected unanimously.

Ernest Wentrcek nominated Cecil Dickson as vice president and he was elected unanimously.

Cecil Dickson nominated Jacquelyn Wakefield as secretary and she was also elected unanimously.

Ernest Jakubik nominated Marlene Horak as treasurer and she was elected unanimously.

Ann Schoeneman nominated Melinda Wilson for youth counselor and she was elected unanimously.

CORRECTED MINUTES OF THE DISTRICT II SPRING MEETING-1979

The District II spring meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. March 25th, 1979 at Lodge 18, Elgin by District II President Ray Woytek.

Flag Bearers Steiger and Urbanek presented our colors and "The Star Spangled Banner" was sung by the membership.

Leslie Gustafson, Lodge 18 president, gave a warm and inspirational welcome to the congregation.

President Woytek led the pledge of allegiance and a silent prayer of respect for our deceased members.

Secretary Mary Dubec read a list of the District II deceased members.

Roll call of officers showed all were present. Only three lodges were not represented in our roll call of lodges.

Secretary Dubec read the minutes of the previous fall meeting. A correction to the minutes was suggested, by State Youth Director Dorothy Massey.

Secretary Dubec stated that the correction would be made.

Next on the agenda was the introduction of the Supreme Lodge officers present.

District II Treasurer Edwin Adamek reported that the books were audited and found to be in perfect shape. He also stated that all officers were paid and the district now had a bank balance of $427.13.

District Youth Counselor Frank Klinkovsky informed everyone of the cake auction to be held after our meeting. Each youth club was allowed to enter two cakes. Youth Counselor Klinkovsky announced that YAD would be held July 8th at Lodge 18, Elgin. He also stated that camp would start July 28th.

Rest Homes Director Howard Leshikar gave the next report. This consisted of a report on a lawsuit in Needville, a new bookkeeper for the Taylor rest home, and new storage

11 and laundry facilities at all rest homes.

Our district received letters of regret for not attending from Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris and VESTNIK Editor Rudy Sefcik.

Alice Banning, chairwoman of the Auditing Committee, confirmed that all books were in order.

District U Director Henry Vitek stated that our district had sound and wise management with a 6.89 per cent gain. He reminded everyone about the June 8th, 1980 convention to be held in San Antonio. Director Vitek also explained to members about the important correspondence concerning the VESTNIK that we would be receiving.

District 11 Sales Representative Lad Zatopek gave everyone a warm greeting and introduced some of the sales representatives to us. He congratulated President Woytek on selling three million dollars worth of insurance last year. Chester Shomaldas was recognized for his one million sales.

Br. R.B. Lesikar, legal advisor from the Supreme Lodge, presented our district with two checks for $250.00 and $2,403.00.

State Youth Director Dorothy Massey informed us that the District 11 youths had the most participation in the state of Texas. She then had our youth leaders and spouses stand for recognition.

Secretary Dubec read the list of 50-year members. Four were present at our meeting.

The District II fall meeting was set for the second Sunday in August.

Lodge 29, Taylor volunteered its facilities.

TWENTY - FIFTH INFANTRY DIVISION 30th Annual Reunion 25th Infantry Division Veterans to Meet in Hawaii

Gathering in Honolulu on July 23rd for their 30th annual reunion will be veterans of the U.S. Army's proud "Tropic Lightning Division," the Twenty-Fifth Infantry Division.

Stationed at Hawaii's storied Schofield Barracks, the Division manned beach defenses during the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941, and, within months, was headed for Guadalcanal, New Georgia and various island-hopping campaigns.

Landing at Lingayen Gulf on Luzon, the Philippines, in early January 1945, the 25th set a U.S. Army record for sustained combat activity by remaining "on line" for 165 consecutive days.

Following total Japanese capitulation in the Philippines in July of that year, "Tropic Lightning" began in-depth training near Clark Field for the impending invasion of Japan. After the cessation of hostilities in August of Continued on page 15

Warfare again flared in Asia June 25, 1950, when the North Korean "People's Army" crossed the 38th Parallel in an unprovoked attack on the Republic of Korea. The "Tropic Lightning" moved to Korea on July 9th. There followed three years of intense combat activity during which Division personnel earned 13 Medals of Honor, attesting to their heroic actions under the most trying conditions.

Returning to Schofield BarracksHawaii, in September of 1954, the Division prepared for its mission as the Army's immediate ready force in the Pacific. During this phase of its training, the 25th kept pace with the changing Army concepts and went through various stages of "Pentomic" and "Road" structure, became partially mechanized, and later improved its air mobility through the utilization of helicopters. "Hawaii's Own" Division was living up to its motto, "Ready to Strike - Anywhere! Anytime!"

In 1964, the outbreak of hostilities in Vietnam found the Division ready and it moved into action within days, proving its mettle under the most severe and hazardous conditions. Its training in air mobility and the tactical employment of helicopters proved most beneficial, enabling the 25th to again successfully fulfill its mission.

Today, still the ready force for the Pacific area, the Division is back at Schofield Barracks, and its volunteer force is at full strength -- a testimonial to the competence and over-all efficiency of this great fighting unit.

All former Division personnel and friends are invited to attend reunion meetings, services and fun activities to be held at the Honolulu Surfrider Hotel and Schofield Barracks from July 23 through 29th, 1979. The highlight of the week-long reunion will be . a Saturday evening, July 28th, military ball which will honor General Fred Weyand, former Division Commander and U.S. Army Chief of Staff, and Major General Otis C. Lynn, current Division Commander.

Senator Daniel Inouye, a veteran who served with Hawaii's famed 442nd Infantry during 1944-45, and currently the State's widely respected senior Senator, will return from Washington, D.C. to be guest of honor and principal speaker for the evening.

The reunion theme for this year's meeting is aptly labelled "The Past Looks at the Present and the Future."

We salute the proud veterans of the U.S. Army's greatest combat division.

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY Dear Readers: By now you have heard that our tickets sale was a great success and we have enough money for a real nice pool table. At the next meeting we have to make final plans for that; if you have any ideas, please let us hear from you. I want to thank all of the people we had helping with the sale. I need to know EXACTLY how many tickets you sold, so I can determine the winners of the Savings Bonds by the next meeting.

Let's plan a supper night for all the participants for the first of June. Call it our "First Annual After-School Night'" and victory party; if you have any suggestions, please bring them to the meetings.

We also need to set a date for our upcoming Six Flags trip and invite the mother lodge to go, too. Please be sure of your eligibility. Check your rule book; these qualifications will be the same as for YAD, and camp, so check with Mom and Dad and let's set the date at the meeting.

Election of officers! Yes, our election is in May for the upcoming year so let's everyone come and elect some good people to help me operate next year.

Our year starts June 1 and everything starts anew. If you need any rule books, point sheets or YAD cards, please contact me. Let's get a new lease on life and get our club going stronger.

Remember, if you are not eligible for our trips you still may go by paying your own way.

Please try to come to the next meeting because we have elections and have to discuss YAD plans. Karen will be there to talk to you about her ideas and to hear yours. This year YAD is July 8th and our time is slipping away.

I think our lodge could use more letters in the Vestnik because you get points and I will get an idea of what you think about what is happening.

LODGE NO. 72, CAMERON Dear Members and Readers: The youth club held their meeting at 3 p.m. April 8th. It followed our local lodge meeting. Many of the adults stayed for our meeting.

The club discussed having a sales booth at the Cameron Folk Fete, which is held the second weekend in June.

Further plans will be made at our next meeting.

The birthday in April was for Tanya Ruzicka. Mrs. Glenda Ruzicka brought the cake.

We had a bake sale April 20, in front of the First National Bank, in Cameron.

We sold everything within an hour. The kolache naturally were the first to go. I want to thank the ladies from the local lodge who baked for the club.

The local lodge and youth club are having their social Friday, May 18, at the Mikulec Country Store in the Marak Community at 7:15. It will be a covered dish social. The youth club will furnish refreshments. Visitors are welcome.

really know what to expect. When we arrived at the beach it was almost deserted. The weather had scared most everyone else away. After the food, etc., was unloaded, a brave group of youth made it into the surf, others went beach combing, • others built sand castles, and still others were just happy to sit and relax.

Supper of fried chicken, buns, carrots, celery, radishes, pickles, dips, cookies, cake and punch was served.

About dusk a fire was built and people' started gathering around its warmth; coming out of the water, it sure felt good.

A vow was made that we would return as time was running out for a wonderful evening that was coming to a close.

We returned to the Scout Hut about 9 p.m. with a happy, tired and satisfied group. We are looking forward to our next get-together.

LODGE 88 YOUTH CLUB

Dear Brothers and Sisters : Our regular youth club meeting was called to order at 1 p.m. on April 21st

by President Brent Hrncir. On behalf of the Robstown lodge, he welcomed our guests from the Floresville lodge.

Edwin McDonald led the pledge of allegiance.

Frances McDonald held roll call and then read the secretary's minutes.

President Brent Hrncir read the treasurer's report, and discussed old and new business topics.

Youth Leader Thelma Hrncir discussed new activities that have been planned for the next few months and said everyone should pick up their copy of the newsletter after the social.

DYC Maxine Pavliska was our guest speaker. She spoke to us about summer camp at Val Verde.

District VII Director Bob Bayer and Assistant Youth Leader Foerster talked about YAD for District VII to be held July 22nd at the St. John Lutheran Church Educational Building in Robs town.

President Brent Hrncir closed the meeting.

After the meeting everyone got on board the Robstown SPJST Youth Club bus for a trip to Malaquite Beach. The food and drinks were loaded on and away we flew (well, almost). It has rained the night before so we didn't

Wednesday, May 2nd I attended our youth club meeting at the lodge. There were several members attending and many things were discussed for the future club's activities. Election of officers was also held. I want to congratulate the ones who were elected for the new year and hope they serve well in their capacity as the ones did in the past years.

Our youth leaders are always so helpful with the meetings and projects that we undertake; when we receive our assignments for our projects that we discussed at our meeting, please do your share of participation for a good cause. I would like to thank Mrs. Mona Zahirniak and Mrs. Maxine Sefcik for their leadership since 1974. I hope our club continues to grow and take part in many activities as we have in the 'past years.

Youth Achievement Day is scheduled for June 24th at Lodge 178 in Longview and District III Camp is set for July 24 through 27th at Val Verde. We are to notify the leaders if we plan to participate in both activities as soon as we can.

Minutes of the April meeting were read and approved.

A treasurer's report followed and it was then reported how much was collected for club dues.

There were lengthy discussions on unfinished business. It was decided for the youth leaders to handle the matter and report to the youth club at the June meeting. Preparations for YAD were discussed in full detail and everyone present was requested to notify the youth leaders as soon as possible who can go and participate.

Brethren Church, with the Rev. Milton Maly officiating. Interment was in the Corinth Cemetery near Buckholts, under the direction of the Marek-Burns -Laywell Funeral Home of Cameron.

Survivors are his wife Kathleen Jurca of Buckholts; one daughter. Mrs. Andy (Della) Startz of Victoria; two sons, John David Jurca of Austin and Adolph B. Jurca Jr. of Buckholts; one sister, Mrs. Adela Larza of Temple; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Milton Jurca, Wilburn Jurca, Albert Zajicek, Edwin Zajicek, Frankie Zajicek, Edward Svoboda, J.D. Ruzicka and Anton Svetlik.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

May we say thanks to our departed brother for a job well done. Let him rest in eternal peace from his earthly labors, and may we honor his memory forever.

You will be missed.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 15, Buckholts in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, ADOLPH B. JURCA, SR. age 80, who passed away at his home on Route 1, Buckholts on Friday, April 20, 1979 at 1 p.m. of a sudden heart attack.

Brother Jurca was born in Austin County near Nelsonville October 22, 1898, the son of the late John and Theresa (Maresh) Jurca. His family moved to Milam County near Buckholts when he was seven years old. He was a retired farmer and rancher.

April 15, 1942 he married Miss Kathleen Gann; they celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary Easter Sunday, April 15th.

Brother Jurca joined the SPJST Lodge No. 15 December 7, 1921 and he served his lodge as a treasurer for many years. He also was a member of the RVOS Lodge No. 4, serving as a secretary for over 20 years. He was a longtime, loyal and faithful worker in both lodges.

Brother Jurca was a member of the Buckholts Brethren Church.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monda y , April 23 at the Buckholts

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of JOHNNIE SKRASEK a lifelong resident of Fort Worth who passed away Thursday, April 19, 1979, at the age of 66. He resided at 6336 Tosca Drive in Fort Worth.

Rosary was recited at Shannon's North Funeral Chapel Friday, April 20th, wit h Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, April 21st at All Saints Cat holic Church.

Brother Skrasek had been in the automobile business in Fort Worth for 50 years. He was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 92, and the North Side Lions Club, vice president of All Saints Catholic Federal Credit Union, and a member of All Saints Catholic Church.

Survivors are his wife, Helen son, John Joseph Skrasek of Fort Worth ; Iwo daughters, Barbara Stewart of Rockwall and Joan Applewhite of Dallas; two brothers, Willie and Joe Skrasek, both of Fort Worth; four sisters, Toni Skrasek Matula, Frances Grizzard and Mary Ryno, all of Fort Worth, and Lillian Skrasek of Arlington: and eight grandchildren.

ITEMS OF INTEREST AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY TEXAS DIVISION INC. RESEARCH GRANTS IN TEXAS DR. R. GRAHAM SMITH UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SOUTHWEST MEDICAL SCHOOL

A test to measure enzyme activity that occurs more frequently in children with acute leukemia is being completed at the University of Texas Southwest Medical School here and will be used to follow recovery or predict relapse of patients under treatment.

The technique was devised by Dr. R. Graham Smith, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, with support of a research grant from the American Cancer Society. The test depends on reaction of an enz yme TdT (terminal

deoxynucleotidyl transferase) with "T" cells, a type related to those active in the body's natural immune system against disease.

TdT derives from a cell that was "descended" from a. primitive one which may have been the ancestor of the leukemia cell, Dr. Smith said. The enzyme reaction is not exclusive to leukemia cells. Normal thymus gland and bone marrow cells also produce TdT, however in smaller amounts than in leukemia patients.

The test, when completed, will be used to measure TdT reactions in acute lymphatic leukemia, the type that strikes children most frequently. A decrease in TdT or a return to normal levels would indicate that treatment was becoming effective. Also, a child successfully treated with chemotherapy, could be tested with the TdT method to forewarn of any relapse.

Dr. Smith expects to use that test eventually in combination with two methods already developed in other laboratories, which by themselves are not always entirely conclusive. These tests measure the quantity of leukemic cells in the blood and, the activity of a protein found on the surface of cells in the immune system. The three methods together will provide a complex that gives an extremely accurate profile of the course or presence of leukemia, Dr. Smith predicted.
