FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK .. These last few weeks have been rather busy ones in the way of travel for, not only your editor, but a number of us representing our SPJST Society. At many of our numerous Society's functions the editor and certain SL officers are invited and requested to be present and yours truly especially because of the public relations involved. In a discussion with some of our SL officers, it was learned that a certain percentage of our members feel that the editor and SL officers are paid to attend these Saturday and Sunday functions at the same rate as our directors, DYCs, etc. In fact, one member stated so to me. You are encouraged to read or reread your "Proceedings" from the last Convention carefully, however, to explain rather briefly, here is the status as prescribed by the convention: The SL officers and editor are paid a monthly salary plus the directors who are paid $200 a month plus expenses. Here is how this is broken down—in attending our SPJST functions, the officers and editor are allowed 15 cents per mile (if they drive their own automobile), meals not to exceed $15 per day and lodging if necessary andthat is it; the directors, DYCs, etc. received $60 a day plus all the above provisions for "services of the Society." It is hoped this explains some of the misconceptions about the SL officers and editor being paid EXTRA WAGES for attending district, lodge and other funct ions .

FORECAST FOR THE FUTURE Business...will continue to go where it is invited and will remain where it is appreciated. Reputation...will continue to be made by many acts and be lost by one. People...will go right on preferring to do business with those who know their business. Performance...will continue to outsell promises. Enthusiasm...will be as contagious as ever. Know how...will surpass guess-how. Trust...not tricks, will keep members loyal. .. Tuesday, April 17th at 7 p.m. we attended the banquet honoring the one-million or more sales representatives; they appreciated the recognition. The evening was a pleasant and fraternal one and enjoyed by all present. .. Saturday afternoon, April 21st we attended the Sixth Annual Conference of Czech Students and Teachers in Cameron, Texas, held in the VFW Post 2010 Hall. It was a nice gathering and enjoyable and your editor followed the proceedings with interest, however, wishes to admonish the students, especially that if they do not PRACTICE USING the Czech language they are studying in their conversations, they are NOT doing themselves justice in their efforts to learn the language fluentItt, especially how to use and improve it. One

admonition: DO NOT BE SHY OR ASHAMED TO USE IT! You WILL make some mistakes; WHO doesn't? U.S. President F.D. Roosevelt rightfully once said: "Whoever has never made a mistake has never done anything." At the conference we saw Professor J.J. Skrivanek, Jr., who told us that the membership of a newly-organized Brethren Church at Bryan-College Station requested him to teach a Czech class Sundays after Sunday School and approximately 25 students are meeting with him and are having an enj oyable time. Keep it up, Prof.; WE ADMIRE YOU! .. Next day was Sunday, April 22nd and it was off to the District IV SR banquet at Rowena-Lowalte at 11 a.m. and the District IV meeting at 2 p.m. at Wall; all enj oyable and we will tell you more in a future issue. ..In everyday living we hear emotional problems in the elderly. Let's face it ! Not all of us will attain the sometimes overglorified "Golden Age" gracefully, nor in full physical and mental capability. For most elderly persons many emotional problems are awaiting, and it is much better to prepare for them ahead of time. These stem from modern urban life in an industrial society, the abrupt change from productivity to retirement, and the loss of role and decreased status accompanying this transition. Fear of illness and death also cause many persons to dread old
