FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK NOTICE Dear Fellow Members and Readers: Recently the editorial carried a portion on the front page, first column, about the Supreme Lodge updating the Vestnik mailing list. It is hoped all have read it and the reasons for doing so.

In this issue are samples of the letter and both sides of the post card you will be receiving within a few days after you receive this Vestnik. Read all CAREFULLY and RETURN POST CARD if you wish to CONTINUE receiving the Vestnik; if you DO NOT return the card, your name will be DROPPED from mailing list. If you DO NOT care to receive the Vestnik, DO NOT send card back. The card is postpaid and self-explanatory.

-EDITOR .. The Publication Committee met, as announced, Saturday, March 24 and requested that we stress this updating as much as possible because it will cost our Society money, however, this has not been done in a long time.

Remember, this does not, repeat does not cost you a bit of effort and not a single penny; the postage is paid!

A Time For Reflection We hope that this Easter offers you inspiration and enlightenment all through the year. costs to increase rapidly. The District VI meeting held at the Taiton Community Center was held Sunday, March 25th and was very enjoyable and there was a nice attendance and everyone seemed to enjoy the entire meeting. We left early in the morning and, qtiite naturally, returned late at night. The district officers' and various reports were complete and brief and, therefore, the meeting did not last too long. Br. Erwin Holy, our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director for District VI gave a very encouraging report pertaining to the status of our rest homes. Our Society and members can and should be proud that we are able to do this type of charitable work for our senior citizens, community, state

and country and, especially, for them themselves; they deserve it! Our 1956 Temple convention delegates are to be congratulated for their wise judgment at that time for establishing our first rest home which was built in Taylor, Texas soon after. ** .. Tuesday, March 27th was the District I Sales Representatives' banquet held at the Surrey Inn in Caldwell and hosted by District SR Ben Trcalek and wife, Martha. It was a very pleasant evening and well-attended and everyone certainly enjoyed the occasion. We have the pictures of the banquet, however, will hold them up for publication with the sales representatives' individual pictures and report. * * ..We had a number of requests to attend meetings of Lodge No. 47, Seaton(Star Hall) and just did not have time because of work with the Vestnik or other commitments, hOwever, Sunday, April 1st. (April Fool's Day) we decided to honor Sister Dorothy Pechal's request to attend their April meeting when they were honoring their 50-year pin members; they really had a nice group present to receive their pins; probably the largest group in any lodge in our Society. Somehow, the day was stormy with flash flood warnings and it literally turned out to be a "frog-strangler" (and it takes a lot of rain and water to strangle a frog! ) Well, we did not April Fool them and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Lodge No. 47 President Jerry Pechal conducted a well-organized meeting and time passed quickly, especially with his interjected humor at times when appropriate. They discuss their affairs at Lodge No. 47 in a very open and democratic way. * * .. After 10 years and 3 months of being your editor it happened! I had always felt that, sooner or later, we would end up by pages being misplaced in our Vestnik; that is—not placed in order.

In the issue of April 4, 1979 it happened that page 15 should have been page 14 and vice versa— page 14 should have been page 15 and then the proper order of reading would have followed in consecutive order. I regret the error and hope that Sister Pearl Hanka and Br. Nick Morris and all members understand.

Seems that a person, is always "fighting" the clock and a deadline; I mentioned that in my January 24th editorial. That old saying: "There's always a first time held true this time, didn't it? Happy Easter to all!

And, as an afterthought, this was not an April Fool joke!

Easter holiday is approaching and each of us should be striving for a betterment of our lives. Now is the ideal time, as loose morals, hatred, crime, deceit and apathy must be changed to love, honesty and pursuit of goodwill for our lives. We are ripe for this change, but it is up to each of us to bring in the harvest within our hearts. We are destined toward greatness.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY

Dear Members and Guests: SPJST Lodge No. 74 was the site Friday, March 30 of a reception and dance in honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of Lelia and George Clark.

The affair was hosted by the Clark's daughter and her husband, Peggy and Ray Johnson, and by their granddaughter and her husband, Tandy and Sonny Simmons, III. The Johnsons and the Simmons are members of Lodge No. 74.

In spite of the rain and flood warnings, over 200 persons journeyed from far and near to help celebrate the joyous occasion and to dance to the music provided by the Country Combinations.

The evening was a happy time for the Clarks, surrounded by so many friends and loved ones, and will provide many happy memories through the years to come.

We were happy to hear many compliments on our lodge and its

was a great success. The food was, oh, so good and the music furnished by the Vanek Polka Band was just great. This band consists of four young Vanek brothers and one of their young cousins.

It's great to see them doing such a great thing. We had guests here for the first time but I won't name anyone; I may leave out someone.

Don't forget our monthly meeting, April 11th and we have Julius Tupa, April 21st.

There's nothing like a little experience to upset a theory.

facilities for providing parties as well as for the regular SPJST functions. Many out-of-towners, as well as some local people who had never visited the lodge, were surprised at the size of the building, and its potential for other gatherings.

March 31st we had Lone Star Time Friends to entertain our dancing fans.

We had a big crowd and, as always many guests came for the first time.

We are really proud to have so many come for good clean entertainment.

It is a proven fact that we have so many benefits to offer; we are steadily having more people to join our SPJST. - Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Charanza who just had an 81/2 lb. baby boy. After visiting the hospital, I found out we had quite a few members who were sick and some who are still ill; get-well because we don't want you sick.

Thanks for so many hard-working members.

announcement from my nephew, Richard Allison and his wife. They are the proud parents of a baby girl.

Richard and John, twins, used to be in our youth club. Mrs. Ruby Talbert, my sister, is the grandmother.

Talking about grandchildren, I received a sweet letter from my grandson, James Talson, from the P.I. I sure miss my three grandchildren, but am happy that they and their mother have gotten a chance to visit her people.

The little newsbee sure has been happy since we have had some sunshine and the trees and flowers are budding out. He sure had a ball at the dance with the City Polka Boys. He told me that Erna Eddleman, R.M. Threadway, and Mrs. Poncik celebrated birthdays and Hans and Sylvia Hugo celebrated 30 years of married bliss.

Cecelia Klechka and Don and Norma Jean Rogers donated the door prizes and Adeline Mitchell drew the numbers. We were happy to have guests from Crosby and Huffman.

Have any of you seen what I hope isn't a new fad on the freeways? I was driving on the freeway and saw a driver of a pickup reading a newspaper. Don't say it guys, it was a woman driver.

What got me, I had to exit before I got close enough to see what was so interesting.

Dear Readers: Saturday, March 31, five members from Lodge 183, Mid-Cities had the priviledge of attending the Officers' Workshop in Ennis. President Bernard Hlavaty was accompanied by 2nd Vice-President Barbara Betik, Financial-Secretary Daniel Roznovsky, Treasurer Inez Greenlees and Betty Hlavaty, reporter, who filled in for Secretary Maurine Hamilton.

Maurine could not attend due to job commitments. Vice-President Gene Havran was absent since he had to serve as Honor Guard at a funeral in Irving.

The day seemed almost like a re-union. We had the opportunity to meet and visit with many of our fellow officers from nearby lodges.

The workshops were very pleasant and informative and my only complaint is the time seemed to pass too quickly. We enjoyed the lunch prepared and served by the good ladies of Lodge 135. We look forward to attending future workshops.

I would like to mention, we feel we were most fortunate to be able to book a very popular band "Rollin' With the Flow" for our upcoming chartering celebration to be held at Lodge 180 in' ' Burleson Sunday, May 20th. The band will play for your dancing pleasure from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Circle this date on your calendar and plan to attend.

I'm sorry we could not get the announcement of our monthly meeting postponement into the Vestnik before the deadline. The new date will be announced in the next newsletter.

The invitations sent to the Sales Representatives Banquet arrived Thursday afternoon, the day all newsletters have to be in the Vestnik

Wednesday, April 11, 1979 office. It's imperative all our sales representatives try and attend this banquet.

Our Youth Leader Diane Schneider was also busy the weekend of March 31st attending the Youth Leaders' Seminar at Herrington's camp, near Austin. She reported having had an enjoyable weekend and feels the talks, discussions and visiting with other youth leaders will benefit her greatly in working with the youth of Lodge 183, Mid-Cities.

LADIES' CIRCLE,

LODGE 92, FORT WORTH Because of extensive repairs being made to fire-damaged National Hall, the Ladies' Circle will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 19th, at St. Thomas Church school cafeteria. The address is 2920 Azle Avenue, and the cafeteria building is in back of the school building.

A regular business meeting is scheduled with reading of officers' reports. The hostesses who volunteered to serve at the March meeting, which was cancelled, will serve at our April 19th meeting. The hostesses are Sisters Marie Tesar, Mary Ann Krivanek, Anne Polk, May Saldana and Maria Frill.

The Circle invites all members and their guests to come to the April meeting, and members who have not yet paid their yearly dues may do so at this time.

LODGE NO. 17, NEW TABOR Dear Members: Our regular monthly meeting was held April 1st, with all officers present.

Resolution of Sympathy was read for departed Brother Rudolph W. Slovacek.

We had one new member, Geraldine Polasek.

President Dick Dusek and. Secretary Melvin Skrabanek reported on the Taylor training workshop for officers.

We had a discussion on a "meeting to discuss a possible merger between our lodge and the Caldwell, Deanville and Cooks Point lodges." Members, watch the Vestnik for more on this later.

Repair and remodeling of the hall are coming along fine and should look quite nice for our May meeting.

Plans were made for our annual

Prizes to be given away this year will be a barbecue grill and cash; tickets for these items will be ready for the next meeting. Be sure to come to take your share to sell. There are still some plans to be made at the next meeting: Work or duty roster will be drawn up, so please let us know when you can work.

The youth club will be having their cake auction plus a country store. They will need donations for the country store.

The kitchen will need sweets, as usual.

Our next meeting will be held May 6th.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Three months of 1979 are in the past and, to close the month of March, the Vrazel Orchestra, which is a polka band, entertained a group of guests; a nice round number of 400. Hosting this dance were Leeland Hensley and wife, Dorothy, with another nice couple, Gus Urbanovsky and wife, Ann. Last Thursday social night the two places usually occupied by our nice couple, John and Mary Kosut, were taken by other guests that evening.

Dear Mary was suffering with a severe headache, again, which bo-

thers her since she had that unfortunate fall in December in one of our department stores. Now Mary wears a collar which her doctor assumes will help her to overcome her painful headache. We all hope so.

Two weeks ago Brother Tom Jecmenek, while cleaning at the lodge, somehow fell and broke his arm ; of course, that put Tom on the leisure list with his arm in bandages.

Otherwise, Tom is fine and will be on the active list soon.

Brother Joe Miksch, a husky and healthy-looking individual, all he has to do is just sneeze and "bingo" crack a couple of ribs. With bandages around his chest, he smiles, but is very careful not to make certain quick moves.

I finally got hold of Sister Hattie Chernosky on the telephone. Hattie is at home from the Twelve Oaks Hospital where she spent two weeks with her injured hip now. She is doing fine and healing well, but is anxious to get out where the action is and doesn't like to be cooped up.

This Tuesday morning I learned that Brother Ed Kadlecek was taken to Heights Hospital on Saturday and placed in the Intensive Care unit. Ed was doing so well and looked very good and it came as a surprise to be in the hospital. To all these brothers and sisters including the ones we do not know about: we wish you get well soon.

A farewell dinner party was given to Brother Tony Garza, Tuesday, March 27th. Tony is employed by the Royal Business Form Co. as a printer; he was transferred from the Houston unit to Arlington, Tx. where he will make his home. To wish him well in his new environment were: Irene McElroy, Irene Slovacek, Irma O'Conner, Joe Sally, Jim Shaw, Rudy Medina, Larry Pena, Dean Tubbs and I. Larry and I drove to Arlington with Tony to help him settle down in his new surroundings; he has a very nice and comfortable apartment. The plant where he will spend his working hours is three times as large as the one here in Houston; we had the pleasure to meet several of his co-workers and also the Vice-Pres. Mr. Murph of the Royal Business Form Co. in Arlington. Everyone was very nice and pleasant. Tony will be in good hands.

Larry and I flew in Monday night and Rudy was nice to meet us at the Hobby Airport. We enjoyed the weekend even with the muscle work we put in. . Good luck, Tony.

This coming Saturday, April 14th, the annual Easter hunt will be held at Lodge 88 from 2 to 4 p.m. Bring out all your children because there will be lots of action as usual and prizes, too.

Make a note of Sunday, May 6th.

Come early and stay late; that is the annual Clean-up Day and we hope everyone will make an effort to be on hand to make the place shine.

Remember, the lodge is very generous to you who is willing to apply themselves.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Even though Sunday, April 1st was quite stormy, the attendance for our monthly meeting was above average.

After convening the meeting, Brother Jerry Pechal asked Flag Bearers Gene Skrabanek and David Pechal to bring in the flags and lead us in the pledge to the flag.

Secretary Sister Ginger Klusacek read the roll call of officers and sales representatives.

She read the minutes of the previous meeting; they were approved as read.

Correspondence included: the mortuary dues from Supreme Lodge, a thank you note from Sister Olga Jez's family for the wreath of flowers sent to the deceased's funeral services, a report from Brother Leonard Mikes-

ka, SL secretary-treasurer, a note from Sister Rose Polivka of Wisconsin thanking the secretary for the refund check and a wish to have Texas weather sent her way, and the resignation letter of Wilton (Charlie) Marek from the Entertainment Committee. I must have omitted the thank you note from the family of Brother Harry Kotrla for the wreath of flowers in my last report (an oversight).

We voted to accept Brother Marek's resignation with regrets and thank him for the work he had done.

After the Investigating Committee approved the applicants, we accepted the following as members of Lodge No. 47: Amy Elaine Bartek, Dawn Michelle Bartek, Glen Gene Bartek, Raymond Robert Goldman, Doris Ann Goldman, Glynn Hill, David Lloyd Skupin, Sharon Kay Skupin, Lester Wade Williams and Daniel Edwin Owen Kohutek. We welcome you all to our lodge and hope you become involved in activities at Seaton Star Hall.

Reported on the sick list was Brother Jerry Hruska who is in the Veteran's Hospital. Brother Joe W. Pechal,Sr. will be entering the hospital before this is read; we are hoping that you both will improve and can leave the hospital shortly; get well, soon!

The president reported on the officers' workshop attended by him and other lodge members recently; on the work day, Saturday, March 24. He thanked Brother Jerry and Sister Annie Chupik and Brother Emil and Sister Frances Hejl who helped with arranging of the tables and chairs for this meeting, thanked Brother Preston Pagel of Temple Floral for the use of. the beautiful centerpiece for the special table, thanked Sister Adeline Kohutek who, with the help of Brother Willie, baked and decorated the two large special cakes and four small star cakes for this event, and Brother Dan and Sister Ann Balusek and Brother Albert and Sister Dana Glaser and other workers for the preparation of the sausage and other necessities.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky reported on the youth leaders' conference held recently and that Lodge No. 29, Taylor would appreciate representatives from Lodge 47 at their May Fete, May 6th.

Other officers reporting were Sister Ruby Bolton, treasurer, and Brother Willie Kohutek, financial-secretary.

Committee's report was given by Brother Emil Hejl. The board minutes were read by Sister Lillian Kosarek.

The chairman of the Grievance Committee reported that two grievances had been received. The parties involved in the controversy are to resolve their differences in private if possible; not in the meeting.

We proceeded in the meeting by electing Brother Alfred L. and Sister Ginger Klusacek as bar chairmen for the reinainder of 1979.

We balloted on Brother J.D. Chlapek and Brother Frank Spanhel as a replacement for Brother Marek

on the Entertainment Committee with Brother Spanhel, the victor. Sisters Annie Jakubec, Dana Glaser and Vallie Zavodny served on the Balloting Committee.

Brother Rudy Sefcik, editor, recalled the days when he served as president of Lodge No. 88 when the Czech language was used solely in lodge meetings and how the change to English came about. He, also, addressed himself to the recipients of the 50-year pins very impressively. He expressed how much he and his wife enjoyed receiving the invitations and that, finally, they could make

preparations to attend this special lodge event. They almost turned back home after hearing that Temple and Bell County were under a flash flood watch. Aren't you glad you didn't?

Sister Delores Skrabanek, youth leader, gave her report that twentyeight youth members, five visitors, five adult visitors and one new member, Missy Coufal, were present.

Sherrie Skrabanek, as duchess, will represent Lodge 47 at the Taylor May Fete, and our duke will be picked later. A bake sale and crafts booth will be maintained by, the youth club and their leaders at the Temple Agricultural and Art Center on North 23rd in Temple, Saturday, April 21st, from 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Watch for more details from the youth leader and youth club reporter or call them.

Sister Skrabanek stated the hammers the youth will be selling had arrived and had been distributed. The five-dozen order was doubled and they will have to reorder because the demand was greater than the supply.

The youngsters could not have their Easter egg hunt because of the heavy rain falling most of the day. They had drawings for the prizes, instead and divided the eggs.

The Entertainment Committee wished to know if they should book a band for next year's picnic for the fourth Sunday in July, 1980. They were instructed to book a band for this date but not to decide if a picnic is to be held next year until this year's is history.

A vote was taken whether to charge for the dance this year or it be free.

The dance will be free as in the past.

Secretary Ginger Klusacek read the names of the recipients of premium refund checks.

Door 'prize winners were Brothers Jerry Trampota and Bob Vasicek.

Then we awarded the 50-year pins to the eleven recipients present. Sisters Adeline Kohutek and Dorothy Pechal were chosen to escort the 50-year members to the special table. Those present were the following sisters and brothers: Annie Chupik, Jerry Chupik, Joe Coufal, (Annie Jakubec accepted pin for her brother, Jerry Hruska), Angeline Kelarek, John Kelarek, Mary Kohutek, Albina-Motl, Ed Motl, Marie Shenkir, Charles Sirney and Eleonora Spanhel. Those absent included: Frank Dukatnik, Ella Sefcik Johnson, Hattie Mikulas, Joe H. Mikulas, John Mikulastik and Agnes Sefcik and their pins will be forwarded to them as well as to the Harry Kotrla family because Brother Harry Kotrla is now deceased.

Sister Adeline had the pleasure to escort her mother and her mother-inlaw. President Pechal presented the pins, a special recognition card and congratulated each of those present. I wish all could have been present because it was very impressive.

After all recipients were seated, Brother Nick Morris spoke to these members and so did President Pechal. They received congratulations from many others. Pictures were taken and when they become developed, they will be printed.

Then we all enjoyed a delicious supper consisting of sausage, furnished by the lodge, and the other food that was brought by the good sisters of the lodge. The usual Happy Hour was held, also. Many thanks for all of the food.

The next meeting will be held Monday, May 7 at 8 p.m. Recognition of the high school graduates, who were active in the youth club, will be discussed by the trustees and a date set for this, also. Possibly the mothers will be honored in the next meeting; this is to be decided by the trustees, so be watching for an additional report this month.

SPJST SOFTBALL TEAM REPORT

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Brothers and Sisters: Another season of softball has unveiled for our team on the weekend of March 24 and 25 when we played in

the pre-season DSMA Tournament at Kiest Park, Dallas, Texas.

Saturday, March 24th, we had an 11 a.m. game with Zip's Paint and we won by a score of 2 to 0 behind the no-hit pitching of Lionel Schulz. His stats were no hits, 4 walks and 8 strikeouts in an outstanding performance on the mound against a very good team. By winning our first game, we didn't have to play again until Sunday morning at 8 a.m.

Leading hitters for this game were Don Jarma with a double and a single, Dan Palm with a single, a walk and scored both runs, Kenny Skierski with a single and Roy Andrews with a single.

Sunday morning, March 25 at 8 a.m., we played Charlie's Team and we somehow got trumped by dropping an 8 to 0 decision. Maybe the cold weather was against us; we didn't play too well defensively or offensively either. It is early in the season and we need to play more games to improve. Roy Andrews was on the mound allowing 9 hits, 4 walks and had 2 strikeouts. The team committed 8 errors and a passed ball, which was really atrocious.

Hitters for the game were Randy Christian with a single, Jeff Burton with a single, Rick Fountain with a double, Jerry Zabojnik with a walk, and Danny Yates with a walk.

Immediately following the defeat, we had a 9:30 a.m. game against the new Datsun Team. We lost this game, but it was a real close one and we gave a good account of ourselves against a real strong team. We made a fine comeback after a very poor game afield in the previous game.

Lionel Schulz hurled another very fine game allowing only 4 hits, one

walk and one strikeout, and only one of the two runs scored was earned.

Looks like Lionel is ready to have another outstanding season on the mound.

Offensively, we had a total of 6 hits and one base-on-balls, but we didn't get the crucial hit at the right time.

Hitters were Don Jarma with a single, Jerry Zabojnik with a single, Randy Christian with a single, Roy Andrews with a single, Jeff Burton with a single and Joe Harasta with a single and Danny Yates with a walk.

Considering these our first games, we didn't do too bad and we came in fourth place out of 12 teams entered in the tournament.

Our regular League Party will begin either Tuesday, April 17 or Wednesday, April 18th. There are 12 teams in the City Major League and we will play either Tuesday or Wednesday night. First game starts at 6:30 p.m., the second game at 8 p.m. and the third game at 9;30 p.m., and we will play either on Tuesday nights on Samuel Grand No. 1 or Wednesday nights on Kiest No. 2. I still do not have our schedule, but I will put it in my next report.

Our annual Team Benefit Dance was held Saturday night, March 31st at Lodge No. 84 and we had a real good and successful dance. The very popular Czech Harvesters orchestra was enjoyed by all present; it was a happy dance. Our deepest thanks to everyone who attended the dance, who bought tickets and ate food in the kitchen. Without this support the dance wouldn't have been such a success, also, our thanks to our mother lodge for letting us have the hall to put on the dance.

Financially, we will make it this season. Thanks again to everyone's help. We also want to thank everyone who donated prizes for the door prize, for the drawing for the half gallon booze drawing and for all the cakes and goodies brought by the players' wives for the kitchen. To name every individual would take another whole page so forgive me for not using names; we thank you all through this media. Without your help and donations, we couldn't have had another successful fund-raising benefit dance.

May God bless you all for your generosity.

Lastly, thanks to all the players for working at the door, kitchen, and selling tickets; you all worked hard to achieve your goals. My most sincere thanks to everyone who helped us on this wonderful evening.

Dear Members and Friends: How are you all enjoying the springtime weather? For me, it is welcome. For my part, I like the seasons of Spring and Autumn. In the first part of the month of March, some cold symptoms started to give me trouble but, in a few days, it was under control. I did have, on hand, in my medicine cabinet, some capsules named Ornade (a prescription from my doctor).

I worked outside in my yard and that may have been the cause of it. I do all of my needed work by myself; I enjoy the outdoors especially. The January 23-degree frost made big damage on fruit trees and flowers at my home. At the present time, everything is green again ; orange trees are blooming and blackberries also. The bees are busy flying around and getting some food for themselves, and, at the same time, for us people. I have honey every morning with oatmeal on my table.

The farmers were busy planting seed. It was dry weather after so many rains in January and February.

On March 21st, we received 1 and 3/4 inches of rain and March 23rd, only one-fourth inch. Grass and farmlands are in good condition.

A Pleasant Surprise March 3rd, at 6 p.m., I received a telephone call from my 28-year-old grandson, Allen J. Stasa, from Victoria. He said: "Grandpa, I wish to tell you that you are a great-grandfather; our dear daughter, Vanessa Lynn Stasa, was born in the Doctor's Hospital, Saturday, March 3rd, 1979 at 5:32 p.m. She weighed 7 lbs. and 7 ozs." Her parents are Allen James and Laura Diane Stasa. Allen's parents, Johnny and Elsie Stasa, also received the wonderful news a few minutes before me. We all congratulated them and promised that, in the next few days, we would come to visit them. March 11th, at 10:20, we arrived at their new home; it was built in 1978 in the new subdivision in the west part

Allen's sister, Cathy, with her husband, Ted Perez, and their 7-month-old daughter Cassondra, also arrived at the same time. Allen's older brother, John D. with his lovely wife, Gayle, and son, Kirk age 5 and daughter, Crystal 21/2 years old, arrived about 30 minutes later. Their home is located in a nearby neighborhood.

These new houses are sold for an average price of around $40,000 (brick outside), 1,400 square feet, with attached two-car garage on a corner lot. In that short time they have lived there, we noticed that the beautification in the front and back yards represents the owners. It continues in our family : this traditional inheritance.

I learned that the residential building lots are sold for $7,000 (size 60 by 120 feet). To my opinion these lots are too small for the size of the buildings. If the first impression was pleasant, then, when we walked inside, we were surprised with the most modern up-to-date household. No wonder that it .took 9 years of hard work and savings to welcome their descendants. They have monthly payments of $450 for a 30-year loan, and their furniture is paid-out.

Laura and Vanessa are in good health. Laura said that she worked until March 2nd and that she has only three weeks sick leave. She is employed, for many years, at the Transportation Co. in Victoria as office manager. Allen is employed for many years as route salesman with

Tom's Peanuts in Victoria and surrounding area. Their address is 225 Monterrey, Victoria, Tx. 77901.

Before we returned home we filled out a membership application for Vanessa to SPJST Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi; the application was mailed March 12 and March 19, she was admitted to our great SPJST Society.

Allen showed us an ornamental certificate which was mailed to them from Vital Census Statistic Department, Austin, Texas. It is a welcome for Vanessa Stasa to the Citizenship of the State of Texas and USA; it is a valuable document. No one here, including myself, has seen something like this certificate before. Vanessa's parents are proud to have a lovely daughter and the certificate. Allen said: "I will put it in a nice picture frame and place it on our living room wall with the many other pictures" (and his art works). His hobby is to glue together parts of sailing vessels.

After we returned to our homes on that same day, we found everything OK. You never know what may happen; there are schools, churches, business places and homes attacked every day by vandalism and theft.

Vanessa Lynn %Ion My Two Days of Pleasure March 24th and 25th My daughter, Lillie and granddaughter, Paula Huber from Austin, stayed with me from Saturday afternoon, March 24 to Monday morning. Saturday night we attended the dance at the new SPJST and Snkni hall, with Pavelka's Orchestra from Robstown furnishing the fine music; it was enjoyable and we had a good time.

Sunday afternoon we went to see my daughter and son-in-law, Emil Mokry, at their "Paradise", southwest of Corpus Christi, on the Nueces River.

A new subdivision was opened there about six years ago. They own two lots

of select land which joins the river bank. In the last four years, Emil and Olga turned this wilderness into a vegetable and fruit orchard. The autumn vegetables were destroyed in the wintertime in 17-degree weather.

In the last part of February, Olga planted more seeds and now you can see the difference; some rows are covered. There are so many different plants and all are in good condition.

Lettuce is ready for the table to be eaten; we already ate some. It is also a good fishing spot, but fish were not hungry this time. Something bothered me: I did not see any birds and only one squirrel. Emil said' that he is feeding the squirrel. The ride was a 40-minute drive and at 6 p.m. we were back at the house, well pleased.

Then at 8 p.m., we had another party for about 1 1,2 hrs. Olga, with her married daughter, Janet, son-in-law, Thomas and their 12-year-old son, John T. Markus, came to visit with Lillie, Paula and me. Monday Fraternally, John Stasa SPJST —

FEATURES FORT BEND COUNTY CZECH FEST AT ROSENBERG Thousands of visitors from throughout Texas will flock to the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds at Rosenberg during the April 20-22 weekend for the fourth annual Fort Bend County Czech Fest.

This is Texas' largest Czech celebration and a crowd of over fifty thousand is expected to partake of the food, music and dancing, and a wide variety of special entertainment in the best Czech tradition.

The fun begins at 5 p.m. Friday, April 20, and continues through midnight Sunday. Daytime activities will include a wide variety of special

Wednesday, April 11, 1979 events, singing, dancing, gymnastics demonstrations, clowns, kiddie rides and more.

Food fare will include such Czech delights as bramborove placky (potato pancakes), klobase (sausage), kolache (pastries), klobasniky (a delicious pig-in-a-blanket treat) and dozens of other items.

Music and dancing will be the order of all three days. Some fifteen bands are scheduled to play and the entertainment will be virtually nonstop. A big dance, featuring some of Texas' best known Czech orchestras, will be held Friday and Saturday nights.

Czech Fest is organized and operated by local civic service, fraternal and church organizations.

More than thirty such organizations will be working around the clock to keep the food concessions, entertainment and special events rolling at a steady pace.

The big spring festival was started four years ago to showcase the Czech traditions of the Fort Bend County area and was an instant success with an estimated forty thousand persons attending the first year.

Rosenberg is located on US 59 thirty miles southwest of Houston. To reach the fairgrounds turn south on Texas 36 off US 59.

Admission to Czech Fest is one dollar for adults and children fourteen and under are admitted free. All dances, musical entertainment and special events are free of charge.

(Brother Editor: The following article appeared in a recent issue of the Lavaca County Tribune-Herald, published in Hallettsville. The article was written by Mrs. Leo (Rita) Janak. The article is interesting because of the fact that Bro. Polasek taught this particular class in the Janak home. As far as I can recall,,

this has never occurred - at least, not in recent times. This was a very commendable effort on Thadious's part and of course, we are proud of him, since he recently became a member and sales representative of SPJST Lodge No. 103, Flatonia. Mrs. Janak is to be commended for her efforts in organizing the class and making her home available for the

Several young students and couples wanted to learn more about their .native language to be able to communicate with their elders and at their jobs, a date was finally set.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Janak, local owners of. Janak Nursery, went to a Czech Symposium in Temple, Texas, in October which was very informative and were also very fortunate to get acquainted with a Czech teacher, Mr. Thadious Polasek. He was very

encouraging and most unselfish to give of his valuable time to come out evenings to the Janak home to get classes started. Mr. Polasek is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. He majored in Czech and Russian with a minor in English. He studied three summers in Czechoslovakia and is presently teaching Czech in Flatonia High School. With the knowledge and experience he has, he was able to teach us so much more

and down to earth experiences that are so vulnerable to our Czech heritage.

We started the first lesson with 18 students and the following week had 32 students at which time we set this as a limit. By the sixth week lesson we were able to say the alphabet in Czech, count, name colors, parts of the body, a nice vocabulary list from pictures shown us, also pronouns plus verbs, small conversation, basic sentences and use the most,commonly used words. We could also greet each other in Czech and learned a few Czech songs which was a great challenge and since most of the students are around Czechs most of the time proved to be a great help in the class. It was fun to see what new words or sentences each one would come back with for the next lesson and it was very enjoyable.

Mr. Polasek explained and gave us a clear view of the difference of the way a Czech and Moravian speak.

This is where great laughter was experienced when some students came to class saying they plant kobzole, some zemnaky, some brambory which all means the same thing, potatoes. Also we came to realize how many slang English words we use in our Czech language.

By- the end of 12 weeks we were making sentences, groups of Czech verbs, endings of verbs, days of week, months of year, poems, and everything visible around us. The first reader for Czech children of freethinking schools in America was also finished. Mr. Polasek also taught us about the Czech foods, recipes and menus used in Czechoslovakia which were very well explained because of his experiences there. He also brought along, each night different, interesting items from Czechoslovakia such as a Czech costume, a smoking pipe, many pictures including a large view of Praha, Czechoslovakia in 1860, and where he lived in school, also jewelry and the most beautiful hand-painted eggs, not to mention the many good books and song books, picture cards with which he also teaches.

I feel there is different interest in Czech language in young people as they would not have nights to study and show that much interest in it. We are very thankful to the parents of these children for the encouragement they gave them which I feel is, at present, one of the main things needed for the Czech language to survive.

Hopefully, if and when these students take a trip to Czechoslovakia, they may be able to converse better and

Mrs. Leo Janak presents a bell to Thadlous Polasek, Czech instructor, which was used to signal the start of the Czech classes during the recently-completed 12-week series of Czech classes. Thadious also teaches a Czech class at Flatonia High School. will not have to have an interpreter with them at all times as so many local Czechs are finding out now. They say, "I know Czech," but when it actually comes to speaking it, the actual fact now is, they understand Czech, but are not able to speak it because of the simple fact that they do not speak it too frequently, which, someday they will realize, but with no opportunity to learn it.

Our District II Youth Counselor Frank Klinkovsky informed us on what an SPJST Youth Club was about, and what activities the youth could attend.

Our youth attended the fall meeting party in Temple February 18th; they really enjoyed themselves.

During our February meeting we elected officers. They are: President--Shirley Slavik Secretary--Tonya Ruzicka Treasurer--Rhonda Slavik Reporter--Torrey Ruzicka March 21st we went bowling. We are planning a bake sale for April.

I attended, the District TI Youth Leaders' Training Class in Taylor February 26th; and Youth Leaders' Seminar at Herrington's camp March 31st and April 1st. At both of these meetings I received helpful information on how the other youth clubs are conducted.

At the end of our meeting, we saw a circus film entitled "'Toby Tyler."

RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION BROILERS—Wendell Bordovsky of Mart is shown here with FFA Supervisor John Perry, displaying the award-winning broilers Bordovsky entered in the Houston Livestock Show last week. Bordovsky, son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Bordovsky, is a junior at Mart High School where he is a member of the FFA Chapter. His pen of five broilers brought him $17,000 at the auction, purchased by Mike Mitchell of Houston. Wendell bought the chicks from the Ideal Hatchery of Cameron, for $3.00 each when they were 1-day old. FFA Supervisors George Gibbs and John Perry said the local boys took 14 pens of broilers to the show and 12 of them were qualified for the auction. Besides Bordovsky's auction bonanza, these additional pens brought another $7,016.14 from the auction. This is the second straight year that Mart FFA boys had prize-winning broilers at the Houston show. Last year local FFA members netted over $27,000 from the show. Wendall is a member of Lodge 35, Elk. Pottkotter, youth leader of Lodge 130, and Kathy's daughter, Laura. We discussed duties of youth leaders and youth club activities.

The weekend of March 31st, I attended the Youth Leaders' and Assistants' Retreat at Herrington Foundation Camp near Austin. I accompanied Sherri Vrla, assistant youth leader of Lodge 130, and Kathy Pottkotter, youth leader of Lodge 130, to the camp. I had the opportunity to attend a very informative group discussion that Mr. Tom Atwood gave on "Steps in Communication," and State Youth Director Dorothy Massey's group discussion on "Dealing with Discipline." We discussed the youth club rules and functions and everyone enjoyed exchanging craft ideas and fund-raising projects. I really enjoyed the delicious meals

that were served, the new friendships I made, and the new games, songs, and dances we learned. This retreat was very worthwhile plus enjoyable in spite of all the rain, and I feel it really benefit me as a youth leader.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Readers, We held our last monthly meeting March 11, at 3 p.m.

Our guest speaker was District I Youth Counselor Melinda Wilson; she spoke to us about going to camp this summer at Val Verde.

Dear Members and Friends, I attended our regular monthly meeting April 4th.

There were several discussions on how we could earn some money for our club by having a worthwhile project for everyone to take a part in it and together we can share the happy moments for our efforts. It was agreed by our leaders that they will report to us at the next meeting on May 2nd, about the money-making project.

Some of us are going to enter our craft and talent in YAD which will be held June 24 at Lodge 178 in Longview.

I have been there at their new building when they had their dedication and it is a big and pretty building ; there is plenty of room for all of us, so get your parents to take you to Longview and enjoy the beautiful scenery at the same time.

Dear Readers, Our April 4 regular monthly meeting was called to order at 7 p.m.

by President Greg Hutyra.

Jackie Zahirniak led us in the pledge of allegiance and the SPJST motto.

There were thirteen members who answered the roll call. Several of our members are involved in many other local activities and sometimes it conflicts with our meetings, and causes them to be absent.

Club dues were collected and a very good report was given by the treasurer.

Wednesday, April 11, 1979 Unfinished business was discussed and acted upon.

New business consisted of our future money-making project which was assigned to our youth leaders to report on at the forthcoming club meeting, May 2nd, at 7 p.m.

The only birthday celebrant for the month of April is Jackie Zahirniak.

We honored her after the meeting with refreshments and a delicious cake.

We wish to thank our youth leaders for their continued interest with the youth in our club.

LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club met Sunday, April 1st. President Karen Kahanek opened the meeting. The pledge of allegiance was led by Amy Kresta and the prayer was led by.

Anthony Kresta.

In our money-making project those who sold the most tickets were given a prize. They are as follows: 1st--Karen Kahanek, 2nd--Vicki Dorotik, 3rd-Tammy Krpec, 4th--Michelle Srubar; and my father won the quilt. All these prizes were given away at the District VI spring meeting held at the Taiton Community Center, Sunday, March 25th. We had a real good turnout for the meeting.

We had our contest in Easter baskets this month. In my age group were: lst--Jean Dorotik, 2nd--Michelle Srubar, 3rd--Anthony Kresta.

Poems were then read by different people.

Our next business was election of officers next month. The Nominating Committee consists of Vicki Dorotik, Karen Kahanek and Michelle Srubar.

We worked on craft and Easter baskets for the rest homes for the aged. We hope it will cheer the grandpas and grandmas.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Sunday, March 25th at 10 a.m., the SPJST Lodge No. 25 Youth Club started out the day with out regular lodge cleanup. Things went fast so we pulled out the record player and records, and we danced. to records such as the "Amos Moses," "Popcorn" and others. By 11:30 a.m. we were all tired and hungry so we all got in our cars and drove to the Jack-In-The-Box for hamburgers, fries and whatever else we wanted to order.

This was, not the end. After eating lunch we went ice-skating. Even some of the chaperones skated. Finally, at 4 p.m., we decided it was time to go home. There were no broken bones 'and no bruises but a lot of blisters! We

Dear Readers, Sunday, March 25th our youth club started the day off by cleaning up the hall which is one of our projects.

Afterward we danced to some records.

About 11:30 a.m. we all went to Jack In-The-Box and ordered whatever we wanted.

After everybody was full, we piled in the cars and went to Arlington to go ice-skating there. There were a lot of blisters, some bruises but no one got hurt. Everyone had fun and I hope to see everyone at the cleanup, Monday, April 16th.

HAISLER. Funeral service for Brother Haisler, 66, of 3110 Shady Hill Drive, Temple was held at 2 p.m. March 21, 1979 in the Harper-Talasek Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Milton Maly officiating.

Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park.

Brother Haisler died Sunday afternoon, March 18, after a short illness.

Born in East Bell County, he was the son of the early Bell County settlers. He had worked for American Desk Manufacturing Co. for 37 years before his retirement.

Brother Haisler was a member of the Brethren Church.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Kathryn Roper Haisler of Temple; a son, William Haisler Jr. of Temple; four daughters, Mrs. Linda Lott, Mrs. Dorothy Lopez, Miss Sharon Kaye.

Haisler and Miss Karen Haisler, all of Temple; four brothers, L.B. Haisler of Oenaville and Vince Haisler, Joe Haisler and Jerry Haisler, all of Temple; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Bravenec of Temple and six grandchildren.

Brother Janosek was born, reared, educated and was a lifelong resident of Corpus Christi, Texas. He worked for Berry Construction Co. and Brown and Root Co. before retiring due to illness.

Brother Janosek was born October 11th, 1929 and he was admitted to the SPJST Lodge No. 79 on October 11th, 1977.

He was also a member of the St. Theresa's Parish, a member of the Sons of Hermann, and the KC. He was an Army veteran.

Funeral mass was celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Corpus Christi Cathedral with the Rev. Richard Shirley, as celebrant. Burial followed in Seaside Memorial Park.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Edwin (Betty) Matula and Mrs. Ed (Margaret) Petru, both of Corpus Christi and several nieces and nephews.

Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Home on Morgan and Tenth Streets, were in charge of funeral arrangements.

To Whom It May Concern: As Chairman of Spanish and Other Languages, I should like to express my support for the requests outlined in the letter included herewith and signed by Prof. Teofil Halama and Mr. Stephen Spacek. The Czech community represents an important ethnic segment of our state population and it seems entirely proper to me to do all we can to preserve its cultural heritage. In recent years Texas has become aware of the rich human resources represented by its various ethnic and racial groups and has taken definite steps to protect and enrich the cultures they represent.

I should also like to point out that, insofar as the University of Houston is concerned, the Czech language program is virtually self-supporting with regard to teaching personnel.

However, unless additional support is forthcoming the program cannot be expected to progress to any significant degree beyond its present level.

I applaud the efforts of Prof.

Halama and Mr. Spacek and add my voice to theirs in request of additional support. I believe their interest and effort represent the keen interest of an important segment of our state population in preserving and enhancing this cultural resource.

Brother Jaap was born October 7, 1908, in Burleson County, the son of the late John H. Jaap and Anna Lesiker Jaap. He grew up in Burleson County and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941. He served with the armed forces overseas in the New Guinea, Asiatic-Pacific and Philippine Liberation campaigns. He was a sergeant.

Survivors include one sister, Anna Luthe of Houston; four nephews and two nieces.

Three brothers, William Jaap, John J. Jaap and Edward Joe Jaap and one sister, Mrs. Lydia Reimers, preceded him in death.

Serving as pallbearers were Herbert A. Baron, Sr., Fred Jaap, Clint Davis, E. Dee Kristof, Clint J. Luksa and George A. Lesikar.

In March, Professors Halama and Souchek conferred with Dr. Harold Raley, UH Department chairman of Spanish and other Languages (including Czech), and Mr. Emil Kuropata, president of Sokol Houston.

From this conference, the group emerged optimistically about the possibility of implementing a third year Czech course at UH. Many prominent . individuals of non-Czech background have supported the UH Czech programme. Dr. Raley, a specialist in Spanish, recognizes the Czech community." It represents an important segment of our state population, and it seems entirely proper to me to do all we can to preserve its cultural heritage. In recent years Texas has become aware of the rich human resources represented by its various ethnic and racial groups and has taken definite steps to protect and enrich the culture which they represent." Thus the UH Czech studies programme has excellent support from the University faculty members as well as from the members of the Houston Czech community. This community has persisted in supporting the UH Czech programme with enthusiasm and the Czech students hope that this enthusiastic support will continue. We would particularly like to thank SPJST Lodge 88 for helping to solve our needs and for publishing the UN Czech courses available.

Currently, 1 am working with the State Legislature to encourage additional appropriations for Czech language courses. Such funds can he made available if a positive CzechEnglish bilingual programme were to he established. However, any funds voted for appropriation by the legislature are to be channeled into each school's Czech programme at the discretion of the school. Because some !:ehools have a better curriculum than others, it is the prerogative of EH

Czech Studies to offer a curriculum which is compatible with those other institutions of higher learning and that this curriculum have the highest potential to be improved; so, I am calling on the State Legislature to ratify my request for a concurrent resolution officially declaring Czech, the third most-spoken language in Texas, thus recognizing the Czech segment of our state population, and sparking an initiative to support future legislation for the purposes of enhancing Texas university Czech program tnes.

We hope in supporting the enhancement of Texas university of Czech programmes that the public will recognize the UH Czech programme as the innovator for the improvement of all university Czech programmes in the State of Texas, and to, enhance . knowledge of that vital ethnic group for all future generations. We hope that you will write your state representative and senator concerning your support for our measures.

ITEMS OF INTEREST STATE REPRESENTATIVE DAN KUBIAK Two gasohol bills expected to develop small, on-farm alcohol fuel plants around the state will face committee hearings this week in the House of Representatives.

Both hills are sponsored by State Rep. Dan Kubiak of Rockdale who said he does not foresee opposition to the bills. Several area farmers and businessmen are expected to testify favorably to the committees.

House Bill 1986, which creates low-cost permits to manufacture alcohol fuel from agriculture products, was discussed in the Energy Resources committee.

House Bill 1803, which provides for

state loans of up to $25,000 for the establishment of small alcohol fuel plants, were heard at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Agriculture and Livestock committee. The loans will be administered by the Texas Department of Agriculture through the Alternative Energy Resource Fund.

"If the Legislature approves both bills, then Texas farmers will be able to make enough fuel from their crops to completely supply their own tractors and trucks, just as Midwest farmers are doing now," Kubiak said.

Two weeks ago the U.S. Department of Agriculture guaranteed a $15 million loan for a major gasohol plant in the Rio Grande Valley, contingent upon the Legislature's approval of HB 1986. The plant of Santa Rosa will produce an estimated 15 million gallons of fuel annually.

The tederally-funded $15 million alcohol plant approved Tuesday for the Texas Rio Grande Valley, one of four major pilot plants to be built in the nation, is the result of several Texans working in Washington, D.C. and in Austin, State Rep. Dan Kubiak of Rockdale said today.

The guaranteed loan for the Santa Rosa plant is contingent only upon the Legislature's passage of bills authored by Kubiak and State Rep. Bill Keese to permit alcohol fuel production in Texas.

Kubiak flew to Washington, D.C. last month to boost Texas on the U.S. Department of Agriculture list of priority sites for the four plants.

"We are especially grateful to

President Jimmy Carter's Special Assistant Sarah Weddington," Kubiak said. "She really was the key to success. Texas is also in debt to former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture John C. White for his efforts in securing the plant."

"Both of them provided the special expertise necessary to successfully increase this state's chances to develop an alternative automobile fuel and ease the energy crunch."

Weddington is a former Texas State Representative and Democratic National Party chairman White is a former Texas Commissioner of Agriculture.

"Texas Speaker of the House Bill Clayton and Commissioner of Agriculture Reagan Brown were also instrumental in convincing federal officials to select Texas as the site for one of the valuable plants," Kubiak said.

The project to be constructed at the sugar processing plant at Santa Rosa is a joint venture of the Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers Association and Midwest Solvents of Atchison, Kansas.

The pilot plant will produce some 15 million gallons of alcohol fuel a year from agricultural products such as blackstrap molasses, sugar beets, milo, sweet sorghum and cull fruits and vegetables. It is expected to be completed within two years.

V sobotu 31.bfezna jsme byli v Ennis, neb se tam pofadala tak zvana workshop od SPJST spolku na sokolovne. Bylo to vge zajimave, nebot' se vyjednaval9 vselijake body t9kajice se SPJST. Rada jsem tam videla zase p.Leonarda Mikesku a poznala p. Jerry Mikulage a slibila jsem,ze zase nekdy v lete,budu-li moci,ie se stavim v Hlavni a •adovne v Temple. Take se me pfihlasil p. Emil Kvasniekdz Rowena a velice pane a p •atelsky jsme si pohovofili. On me pak pfedstavil jeho sestru pi. Havlakovou a jegte jednu pi. jmenem Walker,v gichni z Rowena.

Polka festival se bude konat 5.a6. kvetna. My jsme si tam pobyli di. do 10. hodin a pak jsme zase museli nazpet do Dallas. Rozlotteili jsme se s Sereikov9mi a oni slibili,ze pfijedou na to oslavu v Ennis v kvetnu a tak se zase sejdeme se velmi a budeme se pane bavit.

Pani Marie Rihova,dcera spisovatelky pi. Vlasty Javoiicke,me sdelila, "Ze jeji mamink y v Ceskoslovensku se doHa svYch 89 let dne 25. biezna a zaslala me nekolik jejich basni (vlastne zbasnene pohaclky). Za ty leta pi. Javoficka sepsala mnoho krasn9ch povidek a romanku, ktere se tekly velke oblibe.

John T. Machova ye veku 79 let. Byla rozena Vranova a znali jsme je dobie, nebot' oba pochazeli z Ennis a zde v Dallas zili Po mnoho let poblOe nits.

Ona byla sest •enici zesnule pi. Marie Urbanove nebot' jejich maminky byly sestry. Pi. Machova zanechava mansynove a d ye dcery a dve sestry.
