FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK _FRATERNALISM! We speak of it very often and do the same in writing about it and, quite honestly, in our SPJST Society, do practice it often.

When hearing what our youth clubs of our various lodges and our adult lodges do throughout the State of Texas for charitable projects, we can certainly agree that our state, counties, communities, etc. are certainly benefited by what all of our efforts do for the betterment of the lives of everyone concerned. Let us take a look at all the benefits our rest homes for the elderly, the school systems, the sick and needy receive in the way of help from these charity projects continually carried on by our various lodges' and youth clubs' endeavors! This editor hopes that many of our State of Texas and U.S. Congressional legislators take a good look at the reports in our SPJST Vestnik and other fraternal society publications before they begin seeking to tax our fraternal benefit societies!

Here is another good example of genuine fraternal endeavor and behavior in true fraternal spirit-Lodge No. 92, Ft. Worth had the well-known Frank Kucera band from Nebraska booked for Friday, March 9th and, all of a sudden, had a fire damage their lodge hall. Instead of cancelling the dance, it was moved to Lodge No. 180, Burleson by mutual agreement. This writer does not know the details, however, all concerned are to be

When Lodge No. 180 was being organized, our office received word that Burleson was too close to Ft. Worth and that there would be too much competition among lodges so close together and a lack of cooperation! This does not bear out the rumor, does it? More power to all! ** .. This week we received a personal note from Sister Agnes Houdek from Dallas that Mrs. Andela Subrtova, the grandmother of Miss Martina Navratilova (the Czech-born world tennis

champion), arrived in Dallas to visit her world-known granddaughter and we wish her a pleasant visit and hope to be able to visit with her before she leaves for her homeland about 2 months from now.

** When speaking of opportunity, how often one hears it said, "I could have been as great as he, but I was never given the opportunity." What is this wonderful thing so frequently referred to and to whom is it restricted? Apparently, some believe that it is a gift offered to only a favored few who, immediately upon receiving it, are borne upward by its wonderful qualities to the height of fortune without further effort upon their part. Too often those imbued with such a belief wait patiently with idle hands, contentedly dreaming of future success, each confident that the goodness of chance, at whose element they worship so to speak, will choose a special element as the recipient of that wonderful gift by which it will be enabled to reach the height of fame. Thus, they dream on.

Daily tasks, forced upon them through the necessity of living, are lightly regarded, held in contempt, and accomplished with no other thought than to end them in the quickest and easiest way possible. As time marches on and old age creeps upon them, the dreams fade, to be

replaced by the realization of wasted lives. Embittered, disillusioned, cynical, they cry of the cruelty of fate.

Too late they learn that opportunity is not a gift, but the reward of preparation and tireless search; that success is not a certain but only a possible result of opportunity. As a swimmer who has not trained is unable to get out in the channel and forge his way against the current, but must be content to, stay near the shore among the driftWood, likewise the man who has not prepared himself to battle with the current life must drift aimlessly with his fellow-idlers and seek sustenance from the tidbits that come within reach. It is not there that opportunity is found. Those who would grasp it must get out in midstream and have the determination and preparation to battle on upstream where lies the goals towards which it leads.

NEWSBRIEFS In their most recent meeting, the officers and members of Lodge 177, Academy voted to donate the sum of $500 to the Belton High School Band to help defray some of the expenses for their upcoming trip to St. Petersburg, Florida. Bill Hutka, president of Lodge 177, stated that this was, "In a continuing effort of Lodge 177 to provide assistance and support to our neighbors in the community and schools and ...we know that the high school band is a credit to our entire community by performing in these events in their usual outstanding manner. The members of our lodge feel a deep respect for giving and do so without thought of return favors."

A representative of the lodge presented this donation in person to the band on Monday, February 19th.

This is another in a long list of donations made to local and area causes by Lodge 177. **

Alton A. Heinzel, 49, a well-known Hallettsville citizen, passed away March 2nd, in Citizens Memorial Hospital in Victoria. Services were held March 5th at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville. interment was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Brother Heinzel was a member of the SPJST Society.

Wednesday, March 14, 1979 Earl Edward Barclay, 53, passed away March 5th in Houston. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m.

Wednesday, March 7th at Messiah Lutheran Church, with Pastor Melvin J. Cordes officiating. Interment was held in Memorial Oaks Cemetery.

Brother Barclay was a member of Lodge 88, Houston.

SUPREME LODGE

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE NET FIGURES FROM 1978 AND OTHER INFORMATION

Dear Members: Now that our annual statement to the Insurance Department in Austin and the actuary's, financial secretary's, and secretary's work have been completed, we can report to you on the net gain figures for 1978, as of 31 December 1978. Article 31(b) of our by-laws also stipulates that the president make periodic reports to the membership.

In looking at our overall results and gains, Actuary Huff made the following statement, which he has allowed me to quote: "This is one of the best years financially that I have ever seen in the SPJST." Summarizing the highlights, we see the following for 1978: Mortuary premiums collected were up 9 percent; income investment was up 12 percent; death claims were down 26 percent; we doubled the net gain from operations over 1977.

It appears that 1978 was again one of the biggest and best for the SPJST — a record year. It is pleasing that we continue to surpass our previous records.

Since net gain is the only real measure of a company's growth, I wish to submit that for the year 1978 we had a net gain of 1,546 members and a net increase in insurance of $11,692,294 (vs. 1,551 members and $10,015,000 in insurance in 1977).

Compared to other fraternal societies, these figures are quite favorable, especially when you consider that we operate only in the State of Texas.

A special tribute for these results goes to everyone involved in sales of insurance at all levels of our Society.

We sincerely appreciate the efforts of all these fine workers-fraternalists, because, without their efforts and demonstrated loyalty, this achievement would not have been possible.

The credit for this effort is also extended to all of those in the SPJST who have, in their own way, helped promote the SPJST. As I have stated many times previously, all of us are, in fact, "salesmen" by virtue of the fact that we all help promote the SPJST. We are also delighted to report that for the first time in the history of the SPJST, we had five million-dollar producers: Brother Ray Woytek of Lodge 187 Round Rock (District II), Sister Birdie Hilsher of Lodge 88 Houston (District V), Brother Roy Hranicky of Lodge 137 Taft (District VII), Brother Chester Shmoldas of Lodge 74 Lovelady '(District II), and Brother Stanley Broz of Lodge 160 San Angelo (Dist. IV). These brothers and sister all wrote in excess of a million dollars, with the exception of Brother Ray Woytek who wrote over three million dollars — a first time for the SPJST! This is the second consecutive year that Brother Ray Woytek wrote over a million dollars in insurance.

This is the fourth year that Brother Chester Shmoldas has written over a million dollars, the second consecutive year that Sister Birdie Hilsher has written over a million dollars, and the first year that Brothers Hranicky and Broz have written over a million dollars in insurance.

We also salute the top sales representatives for 1978 in all of the districts, both in the amount of insurance sold and the number of new members enrolled. Those sales representatives in the President's Club, the Underwriter's Club, and the Pacesetter's Club are to be saluted and commended. They will appear in the Vestnik after they are presented their awards at their district sales banquets.

We have a total of 55,527 certificates in force as of 31 December 1978, for a total of $129,065,371 in life insurance coverage, a sizable increase in both categories over 1977.

Our assets now total in excess of $26,000,000, an increase of 6.59 percent over 1977.

Our solvency ratio stands at $128.78, which constitutes $128.78 in assets for every $100 in liabilities. (It was 126.77 in 1977, so this is a nice increase.)

Our surplus fund for the protection of certificateholders is in the amount of $5,857,640.38, also an increase over 1977.

Regarding production figures for 1978 (before net), we received a total of 3,720 applications for $22,948,955 in life insurance vs. 3,853 applications for $20,101,465 in life insurance in 1977.

As we can see, we received and processed less applications than we did in 1977, but the amount of insurance was increased by almost $3,000,000. All seven districts met and exceeded their quotas in 1978.

All of these figures point to the fact that our sales representatives are selling larger coverage to new members and this is significant.

Everyone is realizing that what was adequate in years past is not adequate in today's economy and in the future.

The annual net percentage gain in 1978 on our investments was 6.89 percent, vs. 6.48 percent in 1977.

This may be repeating previous statements, but all of these figures point up the fact that the SPJST is definitely a big business and has been for a number of years. Our overall financial posture is very stable and sound. I feel that all of us can take credit for this nice growth and your Supreme Lodge can be credited with some very sound management and good business practices. We have invested wisely and managed your money well. These investments and the overall good management of our resources has kept members' policy costs (premiums) as low as possible.

The SPJST enjoys an enviable reputation among fraternals in Texas, and, indeed, among the entire family of fraternal benefit Societies throughout the United States and Canada.

The 1979 insurance quotas have been set for the districts at the same level as for 1978, since the 1978 quotas constituted a 17 percent increase over 1977. With everyone's cooperation, I'm confident we will achieve these goals.

Now, here are some more figures since my New Year's Message and Report: 8 percent Refund To Lodges. The 8 percent refund to lodges for 1978 amounted to $145,628.19 vs. $136,847.89 in 1977.

Premium Refunds. The premium refund checks sent out every month

by Financial Secretary Mikulas' department to individual members

4 through their lodges amounted to $208,877,79 for 1978, plus $5,280.45 to the lodges for postage in handling these refund checks. (Art. 37(y) of our by-laws).

District Youth Fund. The checks for this fund will be distributed to the district treasurers in the coming spring district meetings. This is the fund that is paid on the basis of 25 cents for every certificate in the district held by those 16 and over as of 31 December 1978, per Art. 54(g) of our by-laws. The complete figures for this fund appear at the end of this report.

Camp Fund Allocation. The advance camp fund allocation to each district is being computed and will soon be sent to the district youth counselors by SYD Sister Massey. This is the fund that is received by the district youth counselors, is controlled by them and disbursed by them. This year, as in years past, this fund is derived from the annual net percentage gain on the Society's investments which, in 1978, was $25,920. This will be computed on $400,000, per action of the last convention and will amount to $27,560.00 in 1979, also an increase. A district audit committee is to audit this fund and report to the membership at least once a year.

District General Expense Fund. The Supreme Lodge contributes the sum of $250 a year to the General Expense Fund of each district, as set forth in Article 54(h) of the by-laws. We hope that this allocation is of some help to the district officers in defraying their expenses in conducting official business within their district. This will also be given the districts in their spring meetings.

New Lodges Chartered. It was our privilege and honor to participate in the chartering ceremonies of Lodge No. 187 Round Rock on February 12th, 1978, at Lodge 18 in Elgin. A new Lodge No. 183 "Mid-Cities" was organized in Arlington on 9 December 1978. That lodge will be given its charter in ceremonies sometime during the month of May 1979.

New Lodge Buildings. Four new lodge buildings were dedicated in 1978 — Lodge No. 178 in Longview dedicated their new building on March 4, 1978; Lodge 188 in Centerville on April 30th; Lodge 79 in Corpus Christi on August 6th; and the new hall for Lodge 180 Burleson was dedicated on August 26th.

Ground-breaking for the new hall at Lodge 187 Round Rock was held on August 23rd. Since then adverse

weather and delays in delivery of material have repeatedly set back the projected date of dedication of this hall, but it is now tentatively set for June 3, 1979.

The officers and members of these lodges are to be commended in their hard work and for their progressive spirit and foresight. Their undertakings have not been easy, sometimes even difficult, but they have persevered. Taking on an obligation such as paying for one of these new edifices is a very grave one and can only be successfully achieved with the intense and complete cooperation of all concerned.

Convention 1980. We can now say that we are in the year before the convention and this means that the first half of 1980 will be especially hectic because all the activities surrounding the preparations for a convention will be in addition to the regular duties that we have. All of you know by now that the convention will be held in the Convention Complex of Hemisfair in San Antonio. The dates are June 9th (Monday) through the 13th, but we have reserved the facilities starting about noon on Sunday, June 8th, 1980. Host lodge will be Lodge 133, San Antonio and they, together with this headquarters, will be passing on information about the convention from time to time. Since we in the Home Office have to work with the by-laws on an almost daily basis, we started making notes about possible amendments shortly after the last convention, especially those areas which we have been having experiences with since the last convention. We will cover the area of electing delegates, etc., to the convention in the coming workshops at Hallettsville, Taylor, and Ennis.

Speaking of the workshops, we hope that the local lodge officers have been making plans for some months now to attend the workshops in one of the three locations. The schedules have been published in the Vestnik for some time now. Only illness or a serious personal obligation should prevent an officer from attending. Surely you'll benefit from being there.

As we reflect on what lies ahead of us, we are cognizant of the ever-changing scene, political and economic, national and international.

It appears that we in the United States are hapless victims of some of the events in other parts of the world over which we have little or no control but which directly affect us and which we are at the mercy of. It seems that my

prediction of a year or so ago may unfortunately come to pass and that gasoline, if it is available, will be costing almost a dollar a gallon within the year. Something has to give. I don't know just what or where. We are living in troubled times and each week, almost each day, brings the news of startling events around the world. The world is now such a "little place" that whatever happens in another country or on another continent, sooner or later, affects events here in the good ole' USA. We Americans are, by nature, optimists, and that is a good way to be, but how long world and national events equal our optimism is getting to be a more hazardous prediction with each passing day. Still...we continue to hope for the best. In the midst of it all, we must endeavor to persevere and foster what we have here closer to home, and more specifically, this organization called the SPJST which, in the final analysis, is doing a lot of good things for a lot of good people.

Let's keep it that way, remembering that we must adjust to the times; respect the past, learn from the past, but not live in it. Everything in our economic life has a source, a destination, and a price that must be paid. It was Longfellow who said: "Not in the clamor of the crowded street, Not in the shouts and plaudits of the throng, But in ourselves are triumph and defeat."

And finally, when we might despair of our efforts and time spent in fraternal work, we should remind ourselves that there are times when one does count. Consider the fact that Texas was admitted to statehood, as were California, Oregon, and Washington, by a majority of one vote.

Thomas Jefferson and John Quincy Adams were elected President of the United States by a majority of one vote in the Electoral College. Who says you don't count?

(All of these allocations constitute an increase over last year.) ** LODGE OFFICERS' WORKSHOPS — 1979 (Schedule in Accompanying Box) To All Concerned: Based on precedence and recent actions of the Supreme Lodge, the following will be in effect for this year's workshops: 1)Officers this year will include those as before, with the addition of the "...lodge treasurer, or some other person designated by the lodge."

2) Sections will include lodge presidents and vice presidents in one section, lodge secretaries in another, and financial secretaries in another. The treasurers may attend any or all of the three sections, moving to them only at the start of the sessions or during the breaks.

3) Mileage for one car only from each lodge, 15 cents a mile, however, if one of the locations is not convenient for the officers of a particular lodge on the date scheduled, they may attend the workshops at one of the other locations, but mileage would still be paid for only one car from each lodge at any one of the three locations. Anyone else wishing to attend these workshops, other than mentioned here, is welcomed to do so, furnishing their own transportation.

These workshops held in previous years were proven to be mutually beneficial. They will deal primarily with lodge procedures and administration.

We are not including workshops on youth work or insurance per se, since these two areas are adequately covered by the vice president and state field managers and state youth director in their district and state seminars and training classes.

We must remember th4t our national and state laws define a Fraternal Benefit Society as "having a lodge system with ritualistic work." The more efficient our lodges are, the better we are insuring and guaranteeing our future as a Fraternal Benefit Society.

The United State Internal Revenue Code specifies two primary requisites for a Fraternal Benefit Society: "a) Must operate on the lodge system, and b) Provide for the payment of life, sick, accident or other benefits to members

Thus we see the specific reference to a "lodge system" and it is through the lodge system that we must operate and improve our services. It behooves every officer mentioned above to attend these workshops as a part of his duty and obligation in being an officer in the local lodge, especially those who are new in the office and have not attended these workshops previously. We will all learn through these workshops.

The District VII spring meeting is scheduled to be held March 25 at the SPJST Hall in Floresville with Lodge 107 being the host lodge.

There will be a chicken barbecue dinner with all the trimmings served at 12 noon.

It is at the spring meeting that 50-year members are honored and will be awarded their membership pins.

There are quite a number of them in our district, therefore, those who can attend, please do so.

CIRCLE OF CZECH WOMEN DALLAS

Looks like the ground hog must have seen his shadow. This bad weather has stayed a little too long.

Surely warmer and sunny days will be here soon. The day of our meeting March 1 was a beautiful one, in fact, the warmest day we've had in a long, long time. President Ella Bartos called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. After the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag, a moment of silence was observed in the memory of Sister Velma Felty, who passed away last month.

The recording secretary, treasurer, and the financial-membership secretary each gave a good' report. The corresponding secretary read "thank you" notes from Sister Adela Lesikar, Nancy Brown, Secretary of Sokol Zizka, and Jeffrey Shelley. Sister Millie Noska sent 14 cards to the sick, bereaved, and "thinking of you". A monetary gift was sent to Sister Adela Lesikar in memory of her husband.

Sincere sympathy is expressed to Sister Helen Oates whose sister, Velma Felty, passed away last month.

Nathan Calder, son-in-law of Sister Rose Urban, has undergone openheart surgery. Sister Rose Kopecek's aunt, Agnes Stepanek of Nebraska, has broken both her wrists. We wish both of them a speedy recovery. We were very happy to welcome three new members - Vickie Kohn, Libbie Elsik, and Lillian Kaska. Our special guest was Mrs. Andela Subertova from Prague, Czechoslovakia. She is the grandmother of the tennis pro Martina Navratilova of Dallas. She was so very happy to be among people who spoke her language and we enjoyed having her. Other guests were Eva Stadtman, George Skotak, Tony Kartous, Miro Jurcik, Bob Zvolanek, and Adolph Janecka. Sisters Anna Kopecky and Agnes Hemzal sent greetings. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Adell Vlk, Mary Tullis, Angelina Ozymy, Mary Sebestik,

Theresa Carper, and Berta K. Paryzkova, our member from Strakonice, Czechoslovakia. Gifts for the birthday sisters were brought by Sisters Sidney Skotak, Alice Roberts, Theresa Carper, Anne Zvolanek, Mary Sebestik, Adell Vlk, and Millie Bartek. The January birthday sisters received gifts also. Sister Anne Zvolanek brought a lovely birthday cake. Donations to Circle were made

by Bob Zvolanek, Tony Kartous, Sisters Anna Kopecky and Agnes Hemzal and Sister Sidney Skotak in memory of Mrs. Mary Urban. Ben Maca, on behalf of Sokol Zizka, thanked the Circle for the yearly donation. He announced that a bake sale will be held on June' 30 at Rudolph's Meat Market. Proceeds will go to the volley ball team to help them with the expenses for the trip to Corpus Christi. Sisters were asked to furnish baked goods.

Sister Anne Zvolanek announced that March 14-18 there will be a Garden Show - "Glory That Was Pompeii" at Fair Park.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Bartos, who were married February 24. Jerry is the son of our president, Mrs. Ella Bartos.

There , were 59 present at the meeting. It was good to see several sisters back who have been absent a few months.

Hostesses for the day were Susan Kutlik, Millie Noska, Ann Skrabanek, Florence Peressenyi, Bertha Podhrasky, Betty Jean Bell, Floy Pokladnik and her daughter, Michelle.

LODGE NO. 33, BLE BLERVILLE

Dear Members: Our lodge will have its chicken stew meal Sunday, March 18th at the Bleiblerbille SPJST Hall. Serving will begin at 11:30 a.m. The price of stew per bowl will be $1.25. Wednesday, March 14, 1979 LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Members: An Entertainment Committee meeting was held last night and our anniversary dinner was planned. The menu consists of roast beef, country sausage, green beans, parsley potatoes, slaw, tea or coffee and dessert; the charge will be $3 for adults and $1.50 for children 12 years and under.

The ladies are asked to please bring pastry.

Doors open at 11 a.m. and our program starts at 2 p.m. It includes the guest speaker Tom Unis, the youth, Brother and Sister award, and SPJST 50-year members' awards, too.

The decoration will be in honor of St. Patrick that day as well as the western dance on the 17th with music

by Jerry Hargrove. You will want to come.

Our picnic date has been changed to July 1st at the Pokladnik farm so make the change on your calendar.

In closing, get-well wishes go to Brother Edwin Petr, our lodge custodian, who had surgery last week.

133, SAN ANTONIO

Dear Members, SPJST Lodge No. 133 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday afternoon, February 11th at the hall, 1505 S. Gevers St. President Emil Matula opened the meeting with the membership reciting the pledge of allegiance.

A moment of silence was held for all the deceased members of our lodge.

Roll call of officers indicated that all were present.

We were informed that Sister Pauline Miculka was very sick at the Floresville Nursing Home. She is the mother of our treasurer, Sister Viola Mazac.

The minutes of the last meeting were read, and accepted as read.

President Matula discussed the procedure on the processing of a surrendered policy. It was very interesting and we hope to learn more about that in the workshops.

The secretary announced that we have three members who are eligible for their fifty-year pins. They are Sister Sophie Leopold, Sister Frances Kutil and Sister Tillie Till.

The report by the Auditing Committee was given. Chairman Jaroslav Kleprlik reported that the committee made a thorough check on

all the books, and that there were no corrections to be made. The committee complimented the treasurer for her good bookkeeping. It was reported that we now have 259 adults, 36 juniors and sixty-six social members. President Matula asked the members to make it their individual responsibility to seek out new members.

Some more discussion was held on the coming convention. We want the members to be appraised of the many responsibilities that we will have in being hosts to the convention. There will be a lot of work, and every member must help in some way. This is a challenge for our lodge, and we will not accept a second to none; when the convention is overwith we want to be able to say that the best and most productive convention was held in San Antonio. Some work on the entertainment part has already been worked out, and it sounds very good. We must make the delegates feel at home, and also see that the social program is tops.

LODGE NO. 81, NEEDVILLE

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m. with President Charlie Matcek, presiding. After the pledge of allegiance to our flag, we remained standing in silence as a tribute to our departed Brother Joe Michalec. Our deepest sympathy goes to the family.

Our secretary called the roll. All officers were present. The minutes were read by Secretary Mary Werner and accepted as read.

A card of thanks was read from the Charlie Shefcik family. Aleene Zwahr gave the financial report. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall gave her report.

Gilbert Walzel gave the Special Fund report. All of these reports were accepted as given.

Our annual chili supper was a great success and the kitchen committee would like to thank all of the ladies for the delicious pastries they donated and everyone else who helped in anyway to make our supper a success.

We appreciated the large group of members from Lodge No. 88 who came to enjoy our good chili and have fellowship with us. Thanks again for coming.

7 The lodge agreed to make the same donations to the Richmond State School, Needville Volunteer Firemen and March of Dimes. Emily Kolaja made another appeal to the ladies to be sure and bring items for the Country Store to be held in connection with the dinner for the District V meeting March 11.

Officers are urged to attend the workshop at Hallettsville March 10.

Refund checks were handed out.

Brother John Kolaja was the recipient of the attendance prize.

LODGE NO. 183, MID- CITIES

Dear Readers: Sunday afternoon, March 4th, Bob and Barbara Betik (Barbara is 2nd Vice Pres.) along with their children, Beverly and Bart, hosted a business meeting for the officers of Lodge 183, Mid-Cities at their home in Arlington.

Those present were Pres. Bernard Hlavaty, his wife, Betty, Financial Sec. Daniel Roznovsky, his wife, Mary Ann, their daughters, Donna and Darlene, Treasurer Inez Greenlees and Secretary Maurine Hamilton.

Bob, Bernard and Daniel worked on the rules and regulations of our lodge and these will be presented to our members at our next monthly meeting.

Plans and preparations were outlined for the up-coming Charter of Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities which hopefully will be a big event. Pres.

Bernard Hlavaty has sent a letter to Supreme Lodge president, Brother Nick Morris informing him of our plans and asking for his approval. As soon as we receive his reply we will be announcing this information. We are all very excited.

Throughout the evening refreshments were served and enjoyed, much business was discussed, while the children enjoyed playing fun games.

We all feel much was accomplished and shared an enjoyable social.

Keep in mind our next scheduled monthly meeting which will be held in Arlington Sunday, March 18 at 2 p.m. at the Arlington Downs Townhouse Clubhouse, 386 Westview Terr., off from Fielder Rd. For more information or directions contact Pres.

By using foil pans, you will not have to worry about misplaced plates or lids. If you bring any pots or dishes, please put your name on them. There will be more about this later.

Let us hope there is no one on the sick list; if so, we hope you are up and about soon.

The City Polka Boys will be at our lodge March 24th and Joe Young, April 7th. The entertainment committee has a very good selection of bands for us, so let us all go and bring a friend. `The greatest wealth is contentment with little.'

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 6 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, March 4th with President Robert Dobecka presiding.

The membership was asked to stand for the reciting of the pledge of allegiance which was led by Damon Perez and Terry Hykel. Damon then recited the lodge motto.

Flag Bearer Eddie Hykel reported there were 23 members present and guests DYC Ed Kamas and Carl Alexander.

The roll call of officers by Sister Hykel showed all officers present.

Secretary Barbara Hykel was called to read the minutes of the previous meeting. They were approved as read.

Correspondence was from SL Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska pertaining to the filing of Income Tax and the schedule of Officers' Workshops. District III will hold its workshop Saturday, March 31st at Ennis Lodge 135 (Sokol Hall).

Wednesday, March 14, 1979 All other officers' reports were given.

Youth leader's report by Willie Mae Schuetz was that the youth will visit the West Rest Home Wednesday, March 14th. The youth members have been practicing the Ceska and Moravian Beseda dances which they would perform March 10th at the Irving Mall. They will present their Easter program Sunday, April 8th after the lodge meeting, which will be held at 2 p.m., followed by the youth meeting, program, Easter egg hunt and supper. The youth will also have an Easter card contest. Damon Perez brought the cake.

At this time DYC Ed Kamas was asked to speak. He informed everyone of the coming events pertaining to the youth program.

It wasoted on to hold the lodge's monthly meeting April 8th at 2 p.m., so the programs for the day may follow. The lodge supper will be fried chicken and the members are asked to bring all the trimmings. It was voted on to purchase new vent hoods for the new commercial stove and deep fryer which the lodge purchased.

New members accepted into the lodge are: Juveniles---Jason C. Herrell and Allen Gregory Kaluza.

Patricia Ann Machac is a juvenile transfer to adult.

On the Card Committee, Sister Lydia Dobecka reported sending anniversary cards in February to Brother and Sister Gary Beseda, Brother and Sister Robert Dobecka, Sr. and Brother and Sister Barrett Ivy. Birthday Card: James Hromadka Get-well Cards: Christine Svrcek.

Dear Members, The regular meeting of Lodge 184 Moulton was held February 14th, with 17 members present.

Our president led the group in reciting the pledge of our flag.

There was no meeting in January due to the terrible weather we were having.

The lodge voted to pay our janitor $5 for his services at the lodge.

A vote was taken to increase the rent to $25 per social when the hall is rented.

At our March meeting our lodge sisters are kindly asked to bring lunch for our social.

SOKOL HOUSTON Dear Members and Friends: The most successful Multidisciplinary Symposium held in Temple, Texas last October is about five months old and in only a short while another such meeting will be held.

Now is the pressing question: What has been accomplished since and what activity will be initiated to show the growth of the Czechs in Texas? In the same issue of the Vestnik in which the Symposium program was printed, an appeal was made by the V. President of the University of Houston Czech Club for funds to support upper level classes and the study of Czech literature and compositions. Since last October, I have talked with Prof.

Halama and he advised that the University would require funding of about $3,000 a year, for two years before the University would be funded by the State. This seemed as a very nominal amount for all of the Czech Societies that are in Houston and a goal that should be most easy to meet.

The only problem is that someone has to initiate a plan of action to start the ball rolling and Sokol took it upon itself to do this. Immediately after the Symposium, the Board of Directors at Sokol Houston pledged $1,000 to the University of Houston for advanced classes. In December, the Slavonic Fire Insurance Association, Chapter I, also made a pledge, so now we have a start. To continue this venture a program is planned at Sokol March 17th, on a Saturday, and all profits from this day will go to the benefit of the advance studies. If more than the pledged amount is made, then a greater amount will be pledged, but no less than $1,000.

We believe that if each Society would do a similar activity the amount needed would be only a matter of time. By having a benefit program as will be described below, we get to meet each other from the numerous fraternal organizations, the University students get to know the Czech influence in Texas and we all get to advance the Czech culture and socializing.

Saturday, March 17th, the day will start at 6 p.m. with a delicious dinner of "veprove pecene, knedliky a zeli or hovezi pecene s omackou." This means a really Czech dish of roast pork or beef, with dumplings and kraut. Our chief is from Czecholsovakia , a cook in the Czech army and a cook from Hollywood, California.

10 prepare the meal as in the old country for your dining pleasure. And this is not all; in the evening there will be a dance with the popular orchestra of Henry Repka and the Music Kings.

In addition, Henry Repka's son, Bruce Alan, a recording artist with TAP RECORDS will be performing with his new combo from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. You will want to see this talented young fellow in his own style. This is not all; then follows a short gymnastic program by the Sokols of Houston.

The dance will start at 8:30 p.m. and last until 12:30. We have a big day planned for you with good Czech atmosphere, the presence of the University of Houston students who will be helping in this activity and all of the profits go to Czech advance sutdies. For a day of special events, you would expect a big price, but not at Sokol. The price of the tickets are $3 for the meal, $3 for the dance, or a discounted price of $5 for both the dinner, dance, and program. Come support the Czech studies in Houston and meet all of the wonderful Czechs who are in Houston and Texas. We have not forgotten the young folks; the meal is $2 and the dance is free for students 16 years or younger if accompanied by their parents. Sale of tickets is being made and we would appreciate advance sales as much as possible so that we may make proper preparations for what promises to be a gala affair.

LODGE NO. 92, FT. WORTH Dear Members and Friends: It will probably be old news to everyone by this time that the National Hall, home of Lodge No. 92 in Ft. Worth is closed following a fire that partially destroyed it. We do not know yet how long it will be under repair so we will announce later, the time and location of future meetings.

The Ladies' Circle cancelled its March meeting and has planned to gather on April 19th at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Thomas School basement.

I was under the impression the letters are proof read and since these errors were not detected I wish to make corrections as follows: In the February 21st issue, when I wrote about Earnestine Plasek's death I listed the four devoted friends playing bridge together, Albina and Ben Plasek, Tillie Helmcamp (printed only Helmcamp) which did not look or sound respectful, and I do think a lot of Sister Tillie Helmcamp.

The other correction February 28th in my fourth paragraph about the creation of a colonial doll, does not make sense. My copy reads: and for a prize Vlasta Novotny baked and decorated a beautiful colonial doll. It was a work of art. Vlasta is really good and artistic. I am sure the errors were not intentional as in printing things like that will happen. The two ladies involved I am sure will understand.

The western dance Friday with Bobby Heiman was well-attended regardless of the bad weather.

Saturday's dance with the Donnie Wavra orchestra, producing ballroom and mixed music, was well-attended.

This was the orchestra's first performance at 88 and everyone enjoyed the music. The dance was hosted by Gus Gerlich in charge of the evening and held the box. Gus was assisted by his wife, Ann, dressed in a luscious green gown. Ray Hagan and George Edwards seated the guests while their spouses, Gladys in a bright print and Lena in a black lace gown, greeted the guests.

Wednesday, March 14, 1979 A lovely wedding took place Saturday, February 3rd, 1979 in the Saviour Lutheran Church to unite two young people in Holy Matrimony; Sherri Lynn Hickman, daughter of William B. and Mary Ann Hickman, and groom, Henry Milton Holeman, the son of Jack and Mildred Holeman.

The bride walked down the aisle on her father's arm, wearing a beautiful wedding gown to meet her future husband, Henry Milton. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Elmo Mertchisone. All the ladies in the wedding party wore pale yellow chiffon gowns and the male escorts wore pleasing green tuxedos and yellow ruffled shirts. The bride's mother wore a pink lace and the groom's mother, a baby blue gown.

The reception was held immediately after the ceremony in the church's recreation room.

The parents of the groom, Jack and Mildred Holeman, are proud parents of son Gregory, and his wife Renee, who presented them with two grandsons. One daughter, Maxine, married to Billie Brinkley, son, Henry Milton, now married and the youngest, James Alan; all three sons are the image of their father, Jack, only taller. The daughter, Maxine, is pretty and sweet as her mother, Mildred, who is serving our lodge as parliamentarian for many years.

Brother George and Elsie Kadera married their second daughter, Frances Jane, to Travis Vaughn, February 3, 1979 in a beautiful church wedding at McKinney, Texas. The reception was held in the church's recreation room. From Houston Steve and Lede Kadera, the grandparents, attended the wedding with niece, Ann Busch. The other set of grandparents, Frank and Frances Dvorak, did not risk the trip to McKinney; the weather was severely cold and the same for me, however, I did get to see numerous wedding pictures and they all are just beautiful and it made me feel I was there and enjoying the wedding. The mother of the bride is a wonder; she made all the bridesmaids' gowns, her own and, on top, the beautiful creation of her daughter's wedding gown. I am sure many of you remember little Elsie Dvorak (now Kadera) performing in many Czech, children's and adults' plays.

She was familiar with our stage since she was a little tot and her singing was a pleasure to listen to. Now Elsie teaches music and, with all her other

11 activities, Elsie is a very busy lady.

Brother Benny Kleb underwent heart surgery and is now recuperating at the home of his son while his wife, Emma, is in Southwest Memorial Hospital in Room 1001. Sister Emily Bily donates her time as a volunteer worker at this hospital on Tuesdays in Unit No. 3. That is very commendable. Emily also joined our Lodge 88 Birthday Club in January and already fulfilled her obligation for the year by serving in the month of February. The club is happy to have you as a member. Her husband, Emil, is well-known to be an excellent television man (I KNOW!) Don't forget our specials in the Blue Room for the month of February: Grasshoppers and Pink Ladies only 75 cents and the Happy Hour on Thursday social night from 7 to 8 p.m.

The atmosphere is soothing and the company great with the excellent service shown by Brother Nat, the bartender.

Another big band special is scheduled to come up Saturday, May 12th with the great orchestra of ED GERLACH. Tickets will go on sale April 20th for $10 per couple. Make your plans now and mark your social calendar.

Dear Members: It is hard to believe that it is March already and time for another meeting of the Slavonic Mutual Fire Ins. Ass'n.

Chapter 9. This meeting will be held at the Sons of Herman Hall, 1200 W. Fuller at 2 p.m.

The usual order of business will be transacted with the officers giving their reports and any business that may come up pertaining to our chapter.

Section 95 of the by-laws states that all proposed changes or amendments to the existing by-laws shall be sent in to the secretary of the Grand Chapter, at least 60 days before the regular convention, which will be held August 27, 28 and 29 of this year.

Since there will be only one more meeting before the convention, bring your recommendations or changes to the by-laws for discussion.

The ladies are asked, as usual, to please bring pastries to go with the meal which will be furnished by the local chapter.

Although they have heard it many times already, we congratulate Bro. and Sis. Joe Merlick on their fiftieth wedding anniversary. They have been members of our chapter for many years and we hope they celebrate many more anniversaries.

Last Saturday morning, I got a phone call that the (National Hall ) SPJST Lodge 92 was on fire. After driving there to see how badly the building was damaged, I found the firemen still there but the fire was out. There is extensive damage to the building and, of course, it will be a while before it can be built back the way it was and before any activities can be held there.

FEATURES CZECH NOW OFFERED AT RICE Tuesday, January 16, was a unique day at Rice University. On this day six people gathered in the private dining room of a dormitory cafeteria and experienced the birth of the first Czech course in the history of the university.

Under the leadership of Professor Teofil Halama, the class soon swelled to seven enthusiastic students, all of whom have Czech backgrounds. With an eager desire to learn, these Rice Czechs

During this time they study both the colorful history and the language of their ancestors. The emphasis of this introductory course is on mastering the sounds of Czech and building up a vocabulary of everyday words and phrases. What events led to the creation of this course?

Rice University is open to student input. It allows students to create special courses known as "college courses." These are organized by one of Rice's 8 "colleges" (dormitories) under the watchful eye of a sponsoring

university department. At least 8 signatures of interested students are required in order for the course to appear on the schedule. At Lovett college, Michael Thannisch, who is presently taking upper level Czech courses at the University of Houston, proposed an introductory Czech course.

Over 25 students expressed interest in the course by signing up. Working closely with Rice and Lovett College, Thannisch then searched for an instructor. Teofil Halama, a Czech instructor from University of Houston, graciously volunteered his services. The

Wednesday, March 14, 1979 result was Lovett 101, Introductory Czech.

But what happens to the typical college course? Most fall by the wayside. The faculty, usually Rice professors, receive no compensation for teaching these courses. Often there is not sufficient student interest to warrant their continuation. What will happen to Czech at Rice? In the short run the future looks bright. The Czech students are out drumming up student support for next year's course. Plans are in the works for two Czech courses next semester, Introductory and Intermediate Czech. Mr. Halama has volunteered to teach them both, even though, at this point, it appears he will receive no compensation for his efforts, not even to pay for the gasoline he burns to get to the classes. Dr. Roy Jones, acting chairman of the Department of German and Russian, has been extremely helpful and enthusiastic about another Slavic language being offered at Rice. But in the long run, the future of Czech at Rice looks rather bleak. There are simply no funds allocated to give the course a firm footing, so we are appealing to the Czech fraternal organizations in the state of Texas to help support this effort. Any group or person interested in supporting the teaching of the Czech Language at Rice is invited and urged to contact Dr. Roy Jones, Acting Chairman, Department of German and Russian, Rice University, Houston, Texas 77001. We hope our efforts will not be in vain, as in the Czech polka, "Skoda Lasky, kterou jsem ti dala..."

James E. Vanek graduated from the University of Texas at Austin December 23, 1978. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration.

He was chosen to the Dean's list with honors the spring semester of 1977. He is also a graduate of Victoria College With an Associative of Arts degree.

James is a member of Lodge No. 32, Victoria. He was active in many SPJST youth functions. Some of the honors he received were 1st place trophies in craft competition at State level YAD competition. He also represented District VI as District King for two years. He also has the honor of being an Eagle Scout. AN ESSAY THE FOUNDATION OF THE STATE The Czechoslovak National Committee, on October 28, 1918, proclaimed the independence of the Czechoslovak State. The National Committee was the supreme organ of the home revolutionary movement and was recognized by the entire nation. This included representatives of all the political parties and was supported in political affairs by all the notion-conscious elements. Prior to October 28th the revolutionary organization of the Czechoslovaks were working abroad, namely the Czechoslovak National Council in Paris.

Leaders of the Czechoslovak revolutionary movement abroad were: Masaryk Prime Minister and Minister of Finance; Benes-Minister of Foreign Affairs and of the Interior, and Stefanik-Minister of War. This foreign Government was in a position similar to that of the Serbian and Belgian Governments at that period. When independence was proclaimed in Prague, the National Committee had in mind precisely this object of seizing the real power on Czechoslovak State territory, thus on October 28th, the home and foreign revolutionary movements fused into one.

The new State included all the lands of the former Crown of Bohemia (Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia), the regions which, from the beginning of history, had been inhabited by the Czech people. In peace and war, in the Middle ages, these regions were welded by the native dynasty into a powerful Central European State. In spite of all the disasters and Germanization, the State had preserved their Czech character and remained the only homeland of the Czech people.

On the evening of October 28th, four members of the Presidium took over in the name of the Czechoslovak National Committee. The signatures of this first law were Antonin Svehla, Jiri Stribrny, Dr. Alois Rasin, Dr. Frantisek Soukup and Dr. Vavro Srobsr of Slovakia. The National Committee possessed the entire legislative and executive power.

It had risen under the Austrian regime in the summer of 1918 as the revolutionary organ; the Czech political parties sent, to it, their representatives according to the number of Deputies in the pre-War legislative bodies. The National Committee was truly an all-national corporation.

The National Committee did not proclaim the Republic of the very first

16 day, but left this to the future National Assembly with the consent of the National Council abroad. The Czechoslovak delegation and the President of the National Committee returned from Geneva where negotiations had taken place just at the time when the National revolution was carried out in Prague.

November 3rd an Armistice was formally declared on the Southern Front and the German Empire was shaken to its foundations and ceased to be feared as a military power and on November 11th, Germany signed the Armistice.

The fourteen days of the Government of the National Committee passed in a feverish endeavor to regulate the chaotic conditions. On the 14th of November the National Assembly held its first session. In the opening session of the National Assembly the Habsburg Dynasty was deprived of all its rights to the Bohemian throne, a Republic was declared and T.G. Masaryk, the leader of the Czechoslovak revolutionary movement abroad, was elected president. The head of the Czechoslovak Provisional Government at Paris was, at the time of his election as President of the Republic, still in Washington and returned to Prague via England, France, and Italy. He returned December 12th, 1918.

The first Government was faced with the difficult task of organizing a new regime in the midst of the chaotic conditions caused by the war. All the belligerent States had to deal with post-war difficulties, but, in the new States, the difficulties were doubly great. The territory which the National Committee had taken over its sovereignty was part of the defeated country; the material connection with Austria and Hungary was a sad reality.

The Czechoslovak Government had to overcome the difficulties by its own resources.

The initial task of the first Government was to provide food for the population and to safeguard the economic and financial foundations of the State. At that time the questions of food-supplies was the most urgent of all and everything else depended upon its solution. Food was purchased from abroad because the home production had fallen off. The food difficulties did not disappear until a few years had passed.

If Czechoslovakia wished to carry out its own economic policy it had to erect a Customs barrier for the State territory and have its own currency. The Czechoslovak currency was established in February 1919.

It was therefore a foregone conclusion, among the masses and their political leaders, that Czechoslovakia would be a democratic republic and that the effort to build up a model democratic State where social justice should reign with laws establishing the political character of the country. These laws consisted of a provisional Constitution which declared Czechoslovakia to be a democratic republic with a president at the head, a law for the abolition of titles of nobility, and the Municipal Elections Act. This farreaching reform abolished the political privileges of property and sex, against which a vain struggle had been conducted for long decades in the Habsburg Monarchy.

ITEMS OF INTEREST MEDICAL, DENTAL 'TITLES' --WHAT THEY MEAN Even a health specialist admits medical "titles" can boggle the mind.

To help end the confusion, Carla Shearer, health education specialist, offers a small list of "titles" with a brief note about each.

Ms. Shearer is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

Here's the list: • Doctor of medicine (M.D.)--a physician who diagnoses and treats diseases. Some are general practitioners, while others specialize in one area.

• Osteopathic physician (D.0.)--a doctor of osteopathy who diagnoses and treats diseases, particularly those involving muscles or bones.

• Podiatrist (D.P.M.)--a doctor of podiatric medicine is concerned with feet--the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of abnormal conditions of the feet.

• Chiropractor (D.C.)--a doctor of chiropractic uses a system of treatment based on the principle that a person's health is determined largely by the nervous system.

Chiropractors treat patients primarily by manual manipulation of parts of the body, especially the spinal column.

VISION SPECIALISTS • Ophthamologist--a physician (M.D.) who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, performs eye surgery and tests eyes for vision defects and prescribes corrective lenses.

• Optometrist--a state-licensed professional (0.D.--doctor of optometry) who tests for vision defects and prescribes corrective lenses.

If an eye disease is found, the patient is referred to an ophthamologist or other physician for diagnosis and treatment.

• Optician--a skilled technician who grinds lenses, fits them into frames and adjusts frames to the wearer upon the prescription of an ophthamologist or optometrist.

DENTAL SPECIALISTS • Dentist--a doctor of dental surgery (D.D.S.) or doctor of medical dentistry

(D.M.D.) who diagnoses and treats dental caries (tooth decay) and other oral diseases.

• Orthodontist–a dentist specializing in the prevention and correction of abnormally positioned or aligned teeth.

• Pedodontist--a dentist specializing in the treatment of children.

• Periodontist--a dentist specializing in diseases of the gum.

MENTAL HEALTH • Psychiatrist--a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders.

• Psychologist--a person who has received special training in psychological analysis, therapyjsT and research.

SELECT DISEASE— RESISTANT SHRUBS, TREES Selecting disease-resistant shrubs and trees now can save time and money later.

"To get started in the right direction, first find our from your county Extension agent, nurseryman or other knowledgeable plant authority which diseases are most troublesome in your area," suggests Dr. Wendell Home, plant pathologist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

If powdery mildew is an annual problem in your location, you may want to watch such plants as euonymous, certain lines of crape myrtle, and roses.

While roses are beautiful and contribute handsorhely to a landscape, they require spraying every 10 days during certain times of the year for black spot and mildew control. In some cases it is possible to select varieties that are more resistant to these diseases, suggests the Texas A&M University System specialist.

Boxwood is a popular plant for formal gardens and basic landscape plantings, but it is highly susceptible to the root-knot nematode. If you have problems with this microscopic roundworm that causes knots or galls on plant roots, .stay away from boxwoods, advises Horne. Consider dwarf yaupon or a similar type plant for a substitute.

In the blackland soils of Central Texas cotton root rot fungus attacks fruitless mulberry, mimosa and certain elms.

Oaks and pecans are usually more resistant after they get past the seedling stage, explains the plant pathologist.

Mimosa have been dying over much of the state the past several years due to attacks from the fungus that causes Fusarium wilt. While this tree is highly attractive, it may be rather short-lived in most areas.

Also, a well established nurseryman who has had several years of experience can serve as a good source of information on this subject. A blind child is born. It wants to live like the others, it wants to get to know the world surround. ing, him, but one of the principal conditions, eyesight, is lacking.

The parents themselves would hardly be able to prepare such a handicapped child for adult life. This task is the concern of entire society, and in our republic, where every citizen is guaranteed the right to a full life, society has taken this task upon itself most selflessly.

School education is of decisive importance in this respect. The Czechoslovak educational system not only gives all citizens the right to free education, but it also creates conditions for its practical application. In Czechoslovakia, there are 17 elementary schools for children with defective eyesight, three of them for children who are completely blind — in Prague, Brno and at LevoEa. Their number is sufficient considering that there are less than 200 blind children in Czechoslovakia under fifteen years of age.

The textbooks, which are the most important teaching aids at schools for the blind are compiled and published by the State Pedagogical Publishing House in Prague. And the books are not cheap, one volume costing from between 500 to 1,000 Cz. crowns.

This publishing house has issued a comprehensive series of special textbooks, from the first to the ninth form, and for all subjects taught. In the near future the textbooks will be modernized, not only from the methodical aspect, but also from the technical point of view. For example, the text will no longer be printed on paper, but on plastic sheets, which are now being used only for illustrations. This will make the textbooks more durable.

All textbooks, from mathematics to music textbooks, contain simple "pictures"; by touching them the blind children create the idea of the objects described in the books. Few people will realize that the blind children must acquire the full extent of knowledge from these books usual for elementary schools, without being overworked.

However, the work of the State Pedagogical Publishing House does not end with the publication of the textbook. Enclosed with each textbook there has to be a methodical guide for the pedagogues and the "translation" of Braille into normal print. In their work, the pedagogues are helped by other manuals, which are published in a special textbook series for pedagogues. Just as at normal schools, children ai schools for the blind also have to read other literature than just the reader. For this purpose, the State Pedagogical Publishing House issues excerpts from Czech, Slovak and world literature. These books have a special concept, containing an introduction and a summary which helps the children to understand the content of the work.

Our State covers all expenses connected with the school education of the blind, and so they, too, can acquire a full knowledae of the world.

Simple Method Extends Storage of Broilers in Home Refrigerator

How broilers are handled after purchase can either shorten or extend their shelf life in the home refrigerator.

That's one finding of study of the effects of four methods of handling and storing broiler carcasses in household refrigerators, with the results measured by bacterial growth on the carcasses.

Thirty-two broiler carcasses were bought from a local retail food chain and immediately taken to the Poultry Products Laboras tories at Texas A&M Uni• itersity for treatment.

The broilers had been processed 2 days prior to retail purchase and trans. ported to the retail outlet through normal market channels in ice-pack form.

At the laboratory, scientists with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station divided the carcasses into the following four treatment ,groups: 1) the carcasses were left in the unopened

retail packages and stored at 39° F, 2) the retail package was opened to permit air circulation during storage and then refrigerated at 39°F, 3) the carcasses were removed from the retail package, repacked in CRY-0-VAC bags, the air removed from the bags, resealed and • the carcasses then stored at 39°F, 4) carcasses were removed from retail package, washed in cold running tap water for 60 seconds, repacked in CRY-0-VAC bags, air removed from the bags, resealed, and stored at 39°F. Initially, and after 1, 5, and 8 days of storage, two carcasses from each of the four treatments were removed and checked for bacterial growth.

Washing the broilers before repackaging produced a significant reduction in both initial bacterial levels and bacterial growth during storage.

Shelf life was significantly extended by washing before repackaging, but there were no significant differences detected among the three other treatments.

Station scientists found that the number of coliform bacteria obtained from the carcasses in this experiment were all relatively low initially. This indicates that the sanitation programs of the processing and distribution systems were effective.

However, coliform bacteria on carcasses which had been repackaged were significantly higher in numbers than those from the carcasses in the intact retail packages and from the carcasses which had been washed before repackaging.

These results suggest that the handling associated with repackaging results in an increase in the bacterial content of the broilers.

The number of mold and yeast on the carcasses was significantly reduced by the washing and repackaging.

Initially, mold and yeast counts were equally divided, but as the days of storage increased the fungal populations tended to become mostly yeast with only a small number of mold present.

repackaged had lower bacterial numbers than the three other treatments and, therefore, had a slightly increased shelf life.

It also appears that the initial handling associated with repackaging may actually produce an increase in bacterial numbers and, therefore, a slight reduction in shelf life.

According to Dr. F. A. Gardner, Experiment Station poultry scientist doing this research, if the retail store has broilers that have been processed with good sanitation procedures and they've been well handled in transit, shelf life will be extended by washing broilers in cold water and repackaging them in fresh new bags.

Gardner adds that for extended storage of broilers, retail bags should be removed, broilers washed, repackaged in new air-tight bags and placed in freezing compartment.
