FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Our district meetings for Spring 1979 in our SPJST Society are nearly upon us; District V will be leading off as the first one in our calendar year and that is at Lodge No. 81, Needville Sunday, March 11. Nearly all are now announced in our Bulletin Board (BB). The Youth Activity Calendar (YAC) is also slowly but surely being filled with dates. Please check both the BB and YAC plus the Calendar on pages 30 and 31 weekly.

** .. Each thought germinating in our mind is but a seed the fruit of which we shall reap, --- either a rose or a thorn, golden wheat or common weeds. Our lives are comparable to a harvest of spiritual sowing, as is so well reflected in the age-old proverb, "sow the wind and you shall reap a storm."

Leisure time can be spent in many profitable and stimulating ways, but it is often wasted in less important activities. After a hard day at work you come home to putter around in your workshop, tend to the garden, or settle back in an easy chair with a good mystery. The television set is your constant companion. Your wife spends her time with the women's club playing bridge or planning a bazaar. All these are fine in moderation, but they are only recreational activities meant to help us physically relax from the pressures and fatigue of work. Too often, leisure time means time-to-kill, spare time is

Many of us, who are of Czechoslovakian birth or extraction, tend to have an inferior complex, due to the fact that our parents were born abroad, or transplanted us to this soil where we were either born or raised.

Some are even ashamed of their background---and have found more

satisfaction and pleasure in other circles. It is true that the grass looks greener somewhere else --- or it may be a combination of two or more reasons. In any event we think that our younger generation should be proud of their ancestry, and the fact that their fathers and friends have contributed to the making of this great country, which is now in the era of the atomic and jet propulsion age.

According to an old legend the ancestors of the Czechs, organized in several tribes, came from the original home in the East under the leadership of Old Father TECH. He stood for the first time on the historical Mount Rip (about 30 miles northwest of Prague), gazed around at the land flowing with milk and honey and took possession of the new home.

All signs point to the fact that the Slays settled in this country some time in the fifth century A.D. The Czech State --- the so-called Crownland of St. Wenceslaus --- rapidly developed and at the peak of its glory, in the 13th century, extended from Adriatic to the Baltic. During the reign of the son of King John of Luxenburg, --- later Emperior and King Charles IV, it was one of the leading cultural centers in Europe.

The Slovaks, very close to the Czechs in language, remained for a thousand years within the orbit of a foreign king dom --- the Hungarian Kingdom. The Czech kingdom was broken up during the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century, which nearly annihilated the

This time they formed a joint country with the Slovaks --- Czechoslovakia, consisting of three provinces—Czech (Bohemia), Moravia and Slovakia. ** .. Probably, so many of you have asked yourself this question: "How Long Will I Live?" No fortune teller, crystal gazer, or a person with second sight can tell you for sure what will happen even an hour frOm now, let alone next year or five years in the future. If they could, they would earn a fortune in answering the universal question, "How long will I live?"

Nonetheless, it is possible to get an idea of what will happen in the future and from a more reliable source than tea leaves or a deck of cards. For many years life insurance companies have been gathering data to answer the question, "How Long Will I Live?"

Today, fraternal life insurance societies like our SPJST know the answer --- not for you as an individual --- but for someone who doesn't really exist, the "average person." Want to know how many more years an "average person" your age will have?

Here is a shortcut method that gives pretty close results between the ages of 16 to 60.

First, write down the number 80; from this subtract your age; multiply the result by 7; and divide this result by 8. For example, if you are 38 the figures will look like this: 38 subtracted from 80 equals 42; multiply by 7 and get 294, then divide by 8 and the result is 36.8 years more you would live if you were an "average person."

Of course, anyone may live for either a longer or shorter period than the averages shown in the insurance tables and that's why it is mighty comforting to know that your life insurance policy is there to protect your family against the unexpected.

Life insurance is an important part of your planning for the unexpected. It brings you protection during the active working years; that time when your family responsibilities are the greatest.

SCHEDULE OFFICERS' WORKSHOPS — 1979

Dr. Charles J. Hollub, 78, a well-known physician and surgeon, died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, February 22nd at his home in Houston. Funeral services were held at 12 noon Monday at the Settegast-Kopf Funeral Chapel, with Bishop John Morkovsky and Chaplain Luck officiating. Interment was made in Houston. Dr. Hollub was a Czech Consul for Czechoslovakia from 1936 to 1946.

LODGE OFFICERS' WORKSHOPS -- 1979

(Schedule in Accompanying Box) To All Concerned: Based on precedence and recent actions of the Supreme Lodge, the following will be in effect for this year's workshops: 1)Officers this year will include those as before, with the addition of the "...lodge treasurer, or some other person designated by the lodge."

2) Sections will include lodge presidents and vice presidents in one section, lodge secretaries in another, and financial secretaries in another. The treasurers may attend any or all of the three sections, moving to them only at the start of the sessions or during the breaks.

3) Mileage for one car only from each lodge, 15 cents a mile, however, if one of the locations is not convenient for the officers of a particular lodge on the date scheduled, they may attend the workshops at one of the other locations, but mileage would still be paid for only one car from each lodge at any one of the three locations. Anyone else wishing to attend these workshops, other than mentioned here, is welcomed to do so, furnishing their own transportation.

These workshops held in previous years were proven to be mutually beneficial. They will deal primarily with lodge procedures and administration.

We are not including workshops on

Make A Special Effort To Be There; You and Your Lodge Will Benefit By It (See accompanying article for further details) —Supreme Lodge, SPJST youth work or insurance per se, since these two areas are adequately covered by the vice president and state field managers and state youth director in their district and state seminars and training classes.

We must remember that our national and state laws define a Fraternal Benefit Society as "having a lodge system with ritualistic work." The more efficient our lodges are, the better we are insuring and guaranteeing our future as a Fraternal Benefit Society.

The United State Internal Revenue Code specifies two primary requisites for a Fraternal 'Benefit Society: "a) Must operate on the lodge system, and b) Provide for the payment of life, sick, accident or other benefits to members or their dependents." Thus we see the specific reference to a "lodge system" and it is through the lodge system that we must operate and improve our services. It behooves every officer mentioned above to attend these workshops as a part of his duty and obligation in being an officer in the local lodge, especially those who are new in

the office and have not attended these workshops previously. We will all learn through these workshops.

NOTICE OF PROPERTY FOR SALE

The Society has acquired by foreclosure the surface of a 325-acre tract of land in Runnels County, Texas.

The property is located 12 miles east of Winters on FM 1770 to Novice. It is approximately six miles east of the junction of FM 2647 and FM 1770. The tract is rectangular in shape bounded by FM 1770 on the north and a gravel road on the west. The tract is suitable for grazing, has good fences and a stock tank. There is a dwelling in good condition located on the northwest corner of the tract. It is built on a slab, has metal roof and metal siding and has approximately 1500 sq. ft. of living area.

SFM SMITH INSTRUCTS DISTRICT IV SALES REPRESE .VFIVES

LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear Members and Friends: The meeting of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone was held on the second Wednesday, February 14th. The meeting was called to order by President Edwin Marek.

All officers were present and we had a good attendance of members and friends.

The minutes were read by Secretary Nelda Marek and, after some minor changes, they were approved.

Thank you notes were received from Mr. Batla and from the Rogers Little League.

Lodge No. 24 has once again donated $100 to the Temple Junior Fair and Livestock Show. Congratulations to all of the young people who participated in the fair. I know that each and everyone put in a lot of time and effort to show your exhibits.

We will again honor our 50-year SPJST members this year. A covered dish luncheon is planned and it will be some time in the summer. The ladies in charge are: La Verne Cabla, Regina Zabcik and Bernice Sebek.

The honored members will be notified by mail as to when this will take place.

The sponsored dance was a great success and we will have another one in the near future.

Our Thursday game night has been cancelled for a while. We will let you know when we will start again.

We had planned a covered-dish social for February 23rd. Also, dorninoe games were planned and everyone was asked to bring a friend.

This event was scheduled for 7 p.m.

We are sending our get-well wishes to Mr. Calvin Shenkir; hope you are feeling better real soon.

We were glad to have SL Vice President Bernard Gebala at our last meeting. We want you to come and visit with us again, soon. It was nice to see Brother Leonard Mikeska again, too. We were glad that he takes time out from his busy schedule to come to our meetings.

We held our monthly meeting Sunday evening, February 18th. There was a good crowd of 36 persons attending. I would like to encourage all the members to come and have an active party. We cannot count your vote if you are not there.

Diane Howie read the minutes of our last meeting.

A Cleanup Day was decided upon for March 3rd and 10th. Please bring garden tools, paint brushes, and general cleaning implements. If the weather does not permit us to work outside, then we will work indoors.

Also, bring a picnic lunch. I hope it turns out to be a productive two weeks. Come on out and support your lodge.

CLUB SISTERS OF LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON

BIRTHDAY

The regular monthly meeting was called to order Wednesday, February 14th at 11 a.m. by president, Sister Shirley High.

The minutes of the previous meeting was read by secretary, Sister Rosalee Kostorn and they were accepted as read.

Sister Lillie Spies and Sister Mary Tilich explained the treasurer's report.

There were three new members, Sisters Patsy Baca, Minnie Bravenec and Flo Taake, welcomed to the club.

It is a pleasure to have these fine sisters join us.

Our dear Sister Ida Hanka donated $10 to the Birthday Club. Sister Hanka is ill and not able to attend our meeting anymore, but she has much love for the Birthday Club and her SPJST Lodge No. 88. Many thanks, Sister Ida Hanka!

We are sorry to hear that Sister Mary Russell is back in the hospital.

Poor dear, has been having a rough go of it. Sister Russell is seriously ill in the Methodist Southwest Hospital, Room 751. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Deepest sympathy to Sister Louise McGregor who lost her mother last week.

Hostesses for February luncheons were: Sisters Della Kadlecek, Josephine Burl, Bessie Dewer, and our new member, Emily Bily. Della, Josephine and Bessie are sisters (real sisters). Many thanks to these good cooks! The food was enjoyed by all.

Sister Anna Hoffmann paid for the meat that was served the second Wednesday. Thanks to you, Sister Hoffmann.

The new rules and regulations were read by Sister Pearl Hanka and they were explained by Sister Rosalee Kostom. There have been a few changes in the rules and regulations so all members should be sure and get their copy of them. We feel that these changes were for the best interest of the Birthday Club.

Wednesday, February 28, 1979 LODGE NO. 183, MID—CITIES Dear Readers: Despite the messy weather we had twenty-five attend the monthly meeting of Lodge No. 183. The meeting was held Sunday, February 18, at 2 p.m. in the Reddy Room of Texas Electric Service Co. in Grand Prairie. We were pleased to see some new faces at our meeting and hope to see even more as the weather improves.

We were very happy to have Br. Ed Kamas, Youth Counselor for District III, attend our meeting. He covered some of the highlights of youth programs and told how these programs could greatly benefit our lodge in the future. He discussed the up-coming Training Seminar with our Youth Leader Diane Schneider and her assistants Nancy Hlavaty and Shirley Karasek. Ed also brought with him several copies of the SPJST District III Youth Club Cookbook which Diane distributed among the youth present. The sale of these cook books will aid our youth in their own programs. Eight copies were sold after the meeting.

President Bernard Hlavaty asked for reports from Financial-Secretary Daniel Roznovsky and Treasurer Inez Greenlees. These were read and approved. Maurine Hamilton read the minutes from the last meeting and, after a few corrections were made, these minutes were approved.

From the Sunshine Committee: In Grand Prairie, Inez Greenlees sent get-well wishes to Maurine Hamilton who just recently underwent major surgery. Maurine is doing very well and we were all most happy to have her present for the meeting. We wish her continued improvement. In Arlington, Betty Hlavaty contacted Wesley Sulak and expressed our condolences on the death of his father, John Sulak.

Ideas and suggestions were again discussed regarding the up-coming chartering which hopefully will take place some time in May. We will have a more detailed report concerning this celebration at a later date.

At the request of our President Bernard, Hlavaty, District III DSR Alvin Nesuda came to Arlington a few weeks ago to school our newest sales representatives in the phases of selling insurance and also explained the different plans offered by SPJST. This schooling should benefit them in their sales work and hopefully gain new members for Lodge No. 183.

7 On behalf of all the members of Lodge 183, I would like to send our "Congratulations" to Alvin Nesuda, our District III sales representative, and his lovely wife, Wilma, on being named "Mr. and Mrs. SPJST of Lodge 25". It's an honor you well deserve after so many years of devoted service. We are very proud for you and send our best wishes for your continued success.

After the meeting adjourned the members enjoyed refreshments and socializing with each other and talking with our guest, Ed Kamas. We hope he will attend some of our future meetings.

DISTRICT V SPRING MEETING March 11, 1979, District V will have their Spring meeting at Lodge No. 81 at Needville, Tx. with a delicious roast beef, three vegetables, pastry and drinks included. The meeting will convene at 11; dinner from 11:30 to 1:30 and then the meeting will reconvene.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, February 11th at the Grant Building. President Frank Zabransky convened the meeting, which followed by the pledge to the flag led by youth club members, Melissa Holy and Denise Vasek.

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the January meeting followed by correspondence.

The election of a youth leader was discussed. Erwin Holy volunteered to act as temporary youth leader.

The SPJST Officers' Workshop will be held in Hallettsville, March 10th.

Treasurer Gaye Galetka read the audit report which was approved. She also gave her report.

Refund checks were given out and the, meeting adjourned.

Refreshments and lunch were served.

February birthdays honored were: Gaynell Chudej, Denise Vasek, Frances Cervenka and Alfonse Holy.

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 66 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, February 18th with Presideht Henry West presiding.

Flag Bearers Larry Brem and James Yates presented the flags; this was followed by the members reciting the pledge of allegiance and lodge motto.

Visitors were Brother Vernon and Sister Rose Wood of Lodge No. 35, Elk. We enjoyed having you. Hope you will come again.

Roll call showed all officers present, except Czech Reporter Otto Hanus.

President West had everyone to stand for a moment of silence in memory of Brother Charlie Soukup who passed away Thursday, February 15th. Our condolences to the family on the loss of their loved one.

In correspondence, a letter from Brother Leonard Mikeska about the SL Workshops to be held in March, was read; also read were a thank-you note from the Cancer Society for donation made in memory of Brother Monroe Kelinske, a thank-you note card from the family of Brother Kelinske, a letter from the March of Dimes thanking the lodge for a previous donation, (It was voted to send a $30 donation to the March of

8 Dimes for 1979), a letter stating that we have a 50-year SPJST member, Brother Ladis Dreyer. Other correpondence was tabled due to lack of information at this time.

The January meeting minutes were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt. They were approved as read.

Brother George Pauling read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held Monday night, February 4th.

President West said Lodge 66 will host the District III spring meeting Sunday. April 29th. Brother West also thanked the youth members for the $150 donated to purchase two dollies to use at the hall.

The quarterly reports for October, November and December were made

by Brother Emil Hanus, treasurer for Linden Hall. Other reports were made

by Brother Frank Parma, ticket chairman; Brother Frank Miller, secretary of the board for Linden Hall, and Sister Darlene Engelke, Lodge 66 financial secretary.' These were all detailed reports.

Sister Sue Pauling gave the entertainment report. She reported on the lodge Christmas party. The committee has selected their officers for the year i and Sister Pauling is in the process of booking bands for 1980.

Sister Libbie Parma gave the youth club report. They went caroling to the Bellmead Nursing Home (also gave them Christmas bags), had a pizza supper and game night for the youth who went caroling, they have made donations to the Salvation Army Shoe Fund (also gave them 30 bags which were left from the Christmas party), donated to the Christmas Seals, March of Dimes, Easter Seals, the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor, and the "Meals on Wheels" at Bellmead and West.

The club had a Valentine box contest for the meeting Sunday. They have other projects planned; doing very good in the kitchen for two Sundays a month, and this keeps them very busy.

We are very happy that Brother Johnny Engelke is doing just great after his recent surgery. We all send our get-well wishes to Randall Sanders, son-in-law of Sister Bonnie Pruitt, who is at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston for treatments.

Let us all remember him in our prayers and we hope he will be home soon.

Sister Maurine Trefny has been ill also. She is reported to be doing fine.

We wish her a speedy recovery. We have missed you, Maurine.

Get-well cards were sent to: Sisters Georgia Schroeder, Maurine Trefny, Doris Glatter and Kathy Schroeder and Brothers Tim Schroeder, James Moore, Randall Sanders and Johnny Engelke.

Sister Gaidusek reported the Cheer Committee had prepared and delivered 35 baskets to our elderly and shut-in members. She also read a number of thank-you notes from them.

It is so nice of this committee to give their time to this project each year.

They are to be commended for the joy and happiness they bring to these members. Thanks to each of you on this committee.

Sister Engelke said the ease sprays we have been sending for funerals have gone up and, since some of the families request donations instead of flowers to be made to other societies or charities, she said we should make a $15 donation to the Rest Home or to whatever society or charity, the family requests. This was voted to be done.

Sister Engelke said that duet. to the fact that our April meeting will be Easter Sunday, we need to change it.

It was voted to hold the meeting on the second Sunday, which is Palm Sunday, April 8th.

Door prize winner was Brother Jim Vrana.

The youth club presented a Valentine box to President West.

Wednesday, February 28, 1979 BRIEF NEWS FROM LODGE 88 Cold, cold and wet! Seems that is the only thing in store for us. Getting used to it? No way! But, even at that, people still get out and dance. Friday with Nick Navarro and Saturday with the Knights of Dixie orchestras, both had a slack attendance, but the ones that did come and didn't mind the weather were out to have a good time and enjoy it ; as for me, I stayed in the cozy surroundings of my apartment.

Our lodge meeting Monday, February 12th had a very nice attendance.

All the committee reports were favorable as usual.

Old business was re-opened for new business and a vote taken for the Board of Trustees to explore the enlarging and remodeling of the lodge building, which unanimously passed.

Most of the time, with all the scheduled activities, we find ourselves in need for more space, so it is more or less a necessity.

February birthday celebrants received a jolly "Happy Birthday" song from the assembly and good wishes to our lovely married couples of wedded bliss. Vows were taken by: Benny and Stacy Kocich, married February 24th, 1941; Steve and Estelle Kelly on the same date, and all enjoying life together for 38 years; Warren and Gladys Havemann, February 8, 1948, married 31 years; Homer and Rita Alexander, 33 years, February 23, 1946; Gilbert and Ann Polnick, 23 years, February 11, 1956. Five happily-married couples in one meeting, that is almost a cloud burst!

As usual a nice and friendly social with refreshments followed after the meeting.

Tuesday, February 13th SPJST Lodge No. 81, Needville held their annual chili supper. Frank and Mary Tilich and I had the pleasure to have a nice and cozy ride with Tim and Rosalee Kostom to enjoy this event at Lodge No. 81. We left Houston early and visited at the SPJST Rest Home No. II with guests and our brothers of Lodge 88, Brother F.F. Faltesek who just recently made his home there; also, Brother J. Hejda who is a resident for quite a while now, and likes it. My old friend, Mrs. Louise Janca, who never changes is always full of humor and good spirits; more power to her. As we entered an unfamiliar wall blocked the usual nice view of the lobby and the dining room, why? Mr. and Mrs. Marx, the managers were not present because they were out of town for a couple of days. From there we visited several

10 LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY Dear Members: President Bill Hutka called the February 10th meeting to order.

All officers and committee chairmen were present.

The membership was informed that Bobby Poncik had an accident at work. He apparently fell at work, breaking some bones. He spent several days in the hospital. We, the members, wish Bobby a speedy recovery and hope he will be able to return to his normal activities.

Brother Driska also stated that Earl Soudeirs and wife will travel to Louisiana due to illness in Earl's family. We're hoping you will find everything OK. Brother Hutka then asked for communications. A thank-you note from the Scott Cheinworth family was read, the lodge received a Gold Star certificate from Gene Goodnight, treasurer of the Bell County Livestock, for the donation. A letter was received from DSR Lad Zatopek, expressing his appreciation to the sales representatives for the good job that they are doing. The sales representatives from our lodge are: Willie Dusek, Louis Driska, Dorothy Massey and Jerry Tomastik. The members of Lodge 177 salute you and keep up the good work.

Brother Hutka asked Otis Beck to give his report on the Board of Trustees' meeting. Brother Otis Beck stated that the water situation was solved. He also mentioned that a garbage collector had been obtained.

It was decided by the board to send Juanita Ramm and one other member to a dietitian school. With several other items, the members accepted the Board of Trustees' recommendations.

Youth Leader Bettye Hawk gave the youth club report. Bettye stated they had a good meeting with one new member, Gary Meyer. She also said the youth club would be selling tickets on a 12-inch black and white power-pack TV. The youth club also presented Pat Tomastik a silver engraved candy dish, along with other gifts. 1, personally, would like to thank the youth club and all my little friends and my great, great friend Bettye for the dish forever. Thanks!

Brother Hutka then asked our kitchen chairperson, Juanita Ramm, to give her report. We have a great kitchen leader and she is doing a fine job in that kitchen; there is always hard work to be done and, as always, Juanita gave a good report with the

VtSTNfIC kitchen making great progress.

Wilbert Ramm, the bar chairman, gave a good report which showed much progress. Also, Wilbert expressed thanks to the many workers who are helping behind the bar.

Ticket chairperson, Pat Tomastik, reported showing much progress.

Thanks to all the fine people who are helping in the ticket office. Also thanks to all the fine people who come out to our activities at Lodge 177.

Game night chairperson, Dorothy Massey, gave her report and also gave thanks to all who came out and worked. All other reports were very good with much progress shown.

Frankie Hutka reported we have several new members. They are: Gary Don Meyer, Francis William Heise, Billie Batts, Wanda Meyer, (different family from above), Clarence Meyer, Jr. Two transferees from Lodge 47 were Johnny and Bernice Hutka.

Two associate members are Joe Petronis and Lucille Heise.

A great big welcome to each of you named above to Lodge 177. Please join in on the work and the fun.

Dorothy Massey made a motion to donate the March 100 Band of Belton $500. A second was made by Rae Lisenbe, and with an unanimous vote from the members, we decided to donate to the band. February 20th, President Bill Hutka and Vice-President Jerry Tomastik attended an assembly at the Belton High School and presented the band and their director a check. The band will represent the State of Texas in Florida. Good luck to the Marching 100 Band. We hope you have a safe trip and have a good time.

With several more items, brought to the floor and considered, the meeting was adjourned with a social following.

Saturday, February 10th, Bettye, Janice and Missey Hawk, Dorothy Massey, Jerry and I attended a dance at Lodge No. 180 in Burleson. Bobby and Clifford Tomastik also attended.

We had a very nice time and the Burleson Lodge 180 is a very beautiful place. We enjoyed meeting everyone and having a good time. The next day the Tomastiks attended the drag races in Fort Worth.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Guests: We had a few warm days and right on the dance night, February 17th, we had a hard freezing rain, so, again, it was dangerous for people to get out; as a result, we had a small crowd to attend the dance. Our lights went out several times, but, all in all, it did not hamper the proceedings of the dance.

We had the Kountry Renditions provide music for our dancing fans, for the first time; as far as I could observe, everyone enjoyed them well.

I would like to make a correction: In the last issue of the Vestnik, in the picture showing the officers of our lodge, our reporting secretary should have read Creola Wilcox, instead of Creola Smith. I don't remember whether or not, I made the error.

We had several members who had donated all the labor free to the repairing of the bathroom. I was wanting to recognize all in this report.

After I discovered the work was donated, I mentioned I would name them in our Vestnik, but it was not desired by them for me to do so. It really is nice to have members to care for the lodge without receiving praise.

We were saddened to have a member, Woodrow Gale, pass away; he was a fine person and hard worker.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION—The SPJST Lodge 29 members in Taylor sponsored their first annual Senior Members Christmas Party Tuesday afternoon at the lodge building. Each member brought a gift and drew a number in order to receive a gift. A turkey and dressing covered-dish dinner was served after an afternoon of domino playing. Dear Members: Our monthly meeting was held at Eagles Hall in New Braunfels February 1st. President Roy Haag called the meeting to order. Douglas Jasek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers were present plus we had a good turnout with a total of 23 members present. We are looking forward to a larger group of our members to be present at our meetings in the future. Things are starting to roll and we want participation of more members in on our activities.

The minutes and treasurer's report were read and accepted with only one minor correction to be made in the minutes. President Haag read communications from Brother Jerry Mikulas concerning refunds for membership. A cheerful response emitted from all of those present.

Local dues were discussed and a decision was made that we have annual dues at the rate of $5 for each adult member including those who are associate members. Membership will be for the calendar year from January to December 31.

Plans are being made for our annual Hill Country Polka Fest which was very successful last year.

Beatrice Parker heads the Publicity Committee with Roy Haag and Gordan Hrabal assisting. The date July 29, 1979. More to come later.

A membership drive is being

implemented with an incentive of $5 being given to members who recommend a candidate and that candidate becomes a member of our lodge. Where does the $5 come from?

Of course, the representative who writes the policy.

Dear Members and Friends: We have quite a few inquires about Sister Sylvia Koch Granado, I just talked to her sister, Sister Erica Hennessey who just came from the hospital and reported she had her fourth surgery, received 41 pints of blood and will have another operation soon. She said her spirits were good, and she enjoys seeing her family and friends. We hope it won't be too long

before she is on the road to a full recovery.

Dear Members: Our lodge meeting was opened with the pledge of allegiance, followed by a moment of silence for our departed Brother Emil Kamenicky. Condolences go out to his bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace.

All the officers were present plus one visitor, Dan Balusek.

The secretary's and treasurer's reports were accepted as read. Also, a card of thanks was acknowledged from the Kamenicky family. The rest of the committees reported arid had good reports despite the weather.

We accepted one new member, namely, Annie Marie Zelisko.

Brother Charlie Kohutek was on the sick list in the hospital; he is much better, he attended this meeting.

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION

Dear Members and Friends: Our February meeting was called to order by President Ernest Wentrcek.

After the routine course of business, we went into discussion concerning some of our major activities and plans for the year.

Following are three of the main events approved by the membership.

No. 1--We will have a booth at the annual J. C. chili cookout held at the Fellowship Grounds, located on Tabor Road. This will be held Saturday, April 7th. The ladies of the lodge will conduct a bake sale and the men, a hot dog stand. Several of our members worked on this project last year and found it to be very enjoyable.

This project is chaired by yours truly, so I will be calling on you for help.

No. 2--Providing we can get enough clubs to enter, Lodge No. 189, will sponsor a slow pitch softball tournament April 27th, 28th and 29th to be held on the Sue Haswell Park grounds.

This project is chaired by David Storm and, needless to say, he will need much help from the membership. We will operate a concession stand during the 3-day period.

No. 3--Now, the big one: July 15th, we will sponsor an old-fashioned picnic, again to be held on the Fellowship Grounds on Tabor Road, celebrating the lodge's 2nd year anniversary. This will be a big undertaking requiring several committees. This project is chaired by Joe D. Novosad and will require much work and planning. More information will be published after the prelimipary details are worked out.

In conclusion, I want to thank our editor and his staff for their patience printing my previous lengthy letter.

Dear Members and Friends: Lodge No. 13 at Dime Box held its regular monthly meeting February 18 at the local lodge hall with 35 members and 3 visitors present. Flag bearer, Sister Patty Tydlacka, led us in the pledge to the flag.

Secretary Sister Olga Nimtz called roll of officers and reported eleven present and only 2 absent, which was very good for such a cold day. She also read the January minutes.

Sister Mildred Horak gave the treasurer's report and Sister Magdalene 'Nett reported on the mortuary account. All reports were accepted.

It was reported that the reason the dance on Saturday, February 17 was cancelled was due to being out of electricity and the Electric Co. could not promise when it would come back on and or that it would remain on. Dear Members: Well, here I am again for another whole year to let you know the news from Kovar Lodge No. 38.

The first two meetings this year were poorly attended and very little was done.

March 11th will be our next meeting. Refreshments will be served and we hope to be able to have a special program.

Our April meeting will be held on the 8th.

In May we have a Mother's Day dance with Lee Roy Matocha, so bring out all the mothers to dance with Lee Roy. The meeting in May will be held on the 13th.

It is not too early to be thinking about our annual picnic. All the ladies who wish to make something for the auction : Remember, that is the first Sunday in August every year, now, that's August 5th.

Our regular monthly meetings for the months will be held June 10th and July 8th. Please make a notation of these dates on your calendar.

Whenever something arises or changes, I will be writing again.

We also would like to get a new floor put down this year. If anyone has a suggestion on how to raise enough money to pay for the lumber, we would be glad to have your ideas.

Our meeting was called to order by President Marie Tesar. A prayer was recited for all the sick and departed members and friends. Also, other prayers were recited in German, Polish, Czech and Spanish.

Congratulations to great-grandmother Louise Oujeska (for the first time) and to Mr. and Mrs. Rickie Lamance of Saginaw on the arrival of a beautiful 7 lb. and 11 oz. little girl at All Saints Hospital in Ft. Worth. May God bless her.

The Circle enjoyed a beautiful morning Thursday, February 8; however, after the meeting and social gathering and time for departure for home, although clear and sunny, the wind came up strong and cold. This sounds like a weather report for February 8th instead of a monthly report of the Circle's activities.

After President Anne Polk greeted visitors and members, Sister Clara Marchioni, with grace and finesse, installed the new officers elected in December to serve the Circle in 1979.

All elected officers swore to carry out their duties to the best of their ability. The same officers served in 1978 and the Circle is confident it will be served in an excellent manner to compliment SPJST Lodge No. 92.

This organization practices "equal rights", and we welcome three new members: Bernie Polk, Don Powers and Louis Kubala. Bernie is the husband of Sister Anne Polk and Don is the husband of Sister Mary Powers.

Additional new members or members who rejoined are Sisters Maggie Konecny, Sunshine Easley, Esther Walker, Julia Dueser, Frances Simmank, Maria Prill, Flora Wiggins and.

Bennie Bundle. Anna Zaborowski and Mollie Walker were visitors. Approximately 45 people attended the meeting.

RETIREE REBUILDS MODEL T FORDS

By Alan Hunt In a small shed at Bellmead, 75-year-old Charlie Soukup is carrying on where the great Henry Ford left off.

Soukup, a retired dredge boat operator, is assembling Model Ts. Hands covered in grease, he takes his visitors on a conducted tour of the Soukup "production line" at his home, 1506 Oak Lawn.

A 1923 roadster stands half-assembled, surrounded by spare parts Soukup has scoured the countryside for.

"I got this fender from a man in Dallas and the chassis I found on a farm about 20 miles from here. It had been converted into a trailer.

"These three engines are spares I have collected over the years."

Soukup, in his own words, "eats, sleeps and breathes" Ford Model Ts.

He courted his wife in one and they have owned dozens of Model Ts over the years.

Soukup's favorite is the one he bought new in 1922. He still has the car and uses it practically every day.

Proudly he climbs into the driver's seat and says, "Just watch, she'll start first time." One press of the starter and the Model T is running as sweetly as a sewing machine.

"You would never believe I had to put that car in storage for 18 years behind a barn," he says. "I had nowhere else to keep it until I moved here."

With its 20 horsepower engine, the Model T is good for between 20 and 25 miles to the gallon, says Soukup.

"Compare the simplicity of this car with all the junk they hang on them nowadays."

Back in his workshop, Soukup chats while he works on one of his spare engines. Behind him stands the rear end of a Model T roadster, stripped to bare metal and ready for the paint shop.

"I go out looking for parts all over the state," he says. "But I try to steer clear of anything too far down south.

The salt air plays havoc with metal.

"Nowadays, of course, a complete Model T can fetch really big money, but I remember the days when I used to pay about $10 to $15 for a good used (e -i The Model T fraternity in this country is strong. Enthusiasts all over the nation do their best to help each other, says Soukup.

"It's only on rare occasions that money actually changes hands.

Usually we swap parts, or do little jobs for each other in return for something we need.

"Only a week or so ago I rewired a Model T truck for someone, but I wouldn't dream of taking money for the job."

With a hint of nostalgia in his voice, Soukup recalls that the first car he ever drove was a Model T. "I got hooked that day, and have stayed hooked ever since."

JOSEF KAJETAN TYL A CZECH PATRIOT This poet, dramatist, actor, editor and man of public affairs, was born in Kutna flora February 4th, 1808. He studied in Praha and Hradec Kralove, where patriotic teachers such as V. Klicpera and J. Chmela awakened in him the enthusiasm to work for the good of all Czech people.

For some time Tyl studied philosophy at the University of Praha, but did not obtain his degree. Instead, he began his career as an actor, first obtaining a part with the company directed by K. Hilmer. He spent two years with this traveling group and then returned to the capital, where he obtained a position as bookkeeper for the 28th infantry company. His duties were light, and Tyl was able to devote considerable time to the theatre and his writings. Similarly today, some young men are drafted into the armed forces, but have sufficient "spare time" to attend college and special courses of various sorts.

In 1846 Tyl became director of dramatics in the Theatre of the Estates in Praha. When absolutism gained the upper hand after the unsuccessful rebellion in 1848, Tyl lost this post and again joined a traveling stock company. In this capacity he died in Plzen July 11th, 1856, only. 48 years old.

Tyl is representative of those patriotic idealists who devoted their entire lives for the cause of Czech rebirth. Theirs was a tremendous job: trying to re-kindle some last remaining dormant spark of national consciousness, for the flames of patriotism had been quenched for three hundred years by an alliance Austro., Hungarian imperialism. And ,Tyl's life paralleled those of similar "Bohemian awakeners" in that it was one of sorrow and ordeal, of suffering and poverty, and most bitter of all: the lack of appreciation and understanding on the part of the masses.

This tragedy is found all too frequently in Bohemian annals: the neglect of a genius, his life of hardship and heartbreak; and after his death the erection of pillars of stone in his "honor."

One of Tyl's earliest attempts in the field of literature was poems in the style of Kollar, but soon he switched to romantic prose with a historical or contemporary background. Here are just a few of them: "Rosina Ruthardova," "Fidlovacka," which included a musical interlude and the

Following Klicpera and, of course, based on his personal participation in dramatics, we find him writing plays: "Vyhon Dub," "Fidlovacka," "Cestmir," "Slepy Mladenec," "Prazsky Flamendr," "Palicova Dcera," "Kutnohorsti Haviri," "Jan Hus, betlemsky kazatel," "Jan Zika z Trocnova," "Jirikovo Videni," "Cert na Zemi," "Lesni Panna," "Marjanka, matka pluku," and others.

Tyl made a tremendous success with his second play, "Rozervanec," "Dekret Kutnohorsky," "Posledni Cech," "Cesky jazyk skoda moje," "Ze zivota chudych lidi."

Tyl's contribution to contemporary journalism was considerable. For a time he contributed to the art revue "Jindy a Nyni," later renamed "Kvety Ceske." Besides this, Tvl

edited the almanac "Pomnenky" (1842-46), "Ceske Besedy" (1842), the publication "Vlastimil" and later on "Prazsky Poser which he transformed in the torrid year of 1848 into a political sheet. Tyl was elected to the Austrian parliament in 1848.

All Czechs revere Tyl for his efforts to resurrect the Czechs from their long sleep, to arouse patriotic sentiments. He was one of the creators of the modern Czech stage not only professional, but amateur.

The cradle of the amateur efforts was the former refectory of the convent U Kajetanu on Praha's Mala Strana, where Tyl himself participated in 1828 through 1837.

Americans of Czech extraction have long honored the memory of Joseph Kajetan Tyl.

Dear Readers, El Campo Lodge 50 Youth Club met February 14th at Wharton County Electric Co-op building.

The meeting was opened with a prayer by President Kim Vanek.

Secretary Chris Goerig read the minutes of the last meeting.

Treasurer Jeff Goerig gave the treasurer's report.

Veronica Bartos gave the community report.

Our special guests were Mrs. Elsie Brdecka and her husband, Frank. We were glad to have them.

Mrs. Brdecka told us about Saint Valentine and entertained the youth with games which we all enjoyed.

Each youth brought a bag or box decorated for Valentine. We asked Mrs. Brdecka to judge them. The winners were: lst--Kim Vanek, 2nd--Greg Goerig and 3rd--Robert Ermis.

We discussed changing our meeting date to Mondays.

Mrs. Elsie Brdecka, Mrs. Georgie Henderson and Mrs. Vlasta Bartos were presented with a carnation in a vase for Valentine's Day by our youth club. This was very nice.

The mothers present were Mrs. Anna Bartos, Mrs. Lorine Ermis, Mrs. Cynthia Goerig, Mrs. Georgia Henderson, Mrs. Janet Holub, Mrs. Bernice Rek, Mrs. Rita Vanek and Mrs. Vlasta Bartos.

We had our Valentine party and the youth exchanged Valentines.

We served pizza, Valentine cookies and soda pop which was enjoyed by all. The refreshments were paid for by the club.

LODGE NO. 20, GRANGER

Dear Readers: The Granger Lodge 20 Youth Club held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, February 18, at 4 p.m. in the local lodge hall with twenty-eight members, seven guests and seven adults present.

The youth then attended the District II skating party at Skate Haven in Temple which was held for all the lodges in this district. There were some 250 members, guests, youth leaders and parents present.

Prizes were awarded after the skating party and the following members won prizes from Lodge 20: Melissa David, a stuffed dog; Keith Dlouhy, a stuffed dog; Sandy Machu, a stuffed monkey; and Lance Ebner, a large Valentine heart.

The Granger youth then went to McDonald's to eat and then headed home very tired.

The Granger Youth Club wishes to thank Mr. Frank Klinkovsky for the skating party because they enjoyed it very much and look forward to this each year. Mr. Klinkovsky, there is ,only one thing -the children want to know, and it is if we could do this more often?

The next SPJST Youth Club meeting will be held Sunday, March 18th, at 3 p.m. at the local lodge hall. Members are urged to attend; the choir will rehearse and go to the Bluebonnet Nursing Center to perform.

Be sure to mark your calendar for Thursday, March 22nd, at 7 p.m.; the youth club will attend the Southwestern University Symphonic Band Concert under the direction of Dr. George Nelson of the music faculty conducting the fifty-member musical organization which gives concerts on the university campus and throughout the state. This will be held at the Alma Thomas Theatre in Georgetown.

Phyllis Kurtin, who is a member of Lodge 20, Granger, will be performing in this concert, therefore, the youth club will have a special interest in viewing this concert.

Dear Members: Johnny Hicks called this month's meeting to order and the pledge of allegiance was led by Travis Love.

Since our former president, Donnie Lueck, moved and others were unable to come, we elected some officers.

They are: President— Johnpy Hicks, Vice President Travis Love, and Secretary Frank Vasicek.

We decided to start our meetings a half hour earlier which means we will start our meetings now at 6 p.m. every second Wednesday of the month because we are going to have a guest speaker. We will try to get a policeman to talk about drugs for next month's meeting.

We also decided to get a pool table and put it in our youth room. To pay for this pool table, we decided to sell a portable black and white power-pack TV. For another money-making project, we will try to get the popcorn machine back, but we must have workers.

Also, we may have a car wash, June 2nd and a bake sale; there is not a set date for it.

Since we are trying to raise money, the youth agreed to have no social for this month.

Clifford Tomastik made the motion for the meeting to adjourn and it passed.

The youth club monthly meeting was held February 11th. After the meeting everyone enjoyed a Valentine party. Everyone brought a homemade Valentine and it was judged.

It was decided that our social this month would be to go Go-Cart riding, February 25th. March social will be to go to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, March 3rd to see Kenny Rogers and Dottie West. Everyone get your western duds out! Brother Krizan was born November 6th, 1903, the son of the late Frank and Frances (Stepan) Krizan in West, Texas. He was married to Minnie Ann Schovajsa on November 5th, 1935 in the Caldwell Brethren Church. He was the owner of a service station, an Exxon dealer for 48 years, a lifelong member of the SPJST, and a faithful member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Minnie Ann Krizan; a son, Frank John Krizan, Jr., daughter-in-law, Judy Krizan, both of Dallas; a brother, Adolph Krizan of Brenham; four half-brothers, Dan Krizan of Houston, Lawrence Krizan of Houston, Fred Krizan of Waco, George Meschwitz of Brenham; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Bateman and Mrs. Mary Mikeska, both of Houston; two half-sisters, Mrs. Eleanora Britton of Brenham and Mrs. Lucille Jezek of West: and two

20 grandchildren, Paul Andrew and Emily Jane Krizan.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 11th at 2 p.m. from the Nelsonville Brethren Church, with the Rev. Gordon Hejl officiating. Burial was in the National Cemetery in Nelsonville. Brenham Memorial Chapel of Brenham was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Garry Luksa, Julius Luksa, William Benavidez, Bill Francisco, Henry Schovajsa, John Schovajsa and Alfonse Hanzelka.

She was 62 years and 13 days of age.

Sister Jansky was born in Hobson, Texas, January 9, 1917 to Jacob and Agnes Machicek Prasek. From Hobson her family moved to Poth, Texas, where she grew to young womanhood. October 19, 1943 she was married to Joe V. Jansky in Astoria, Oregon. Later, she and her husband returned to Poth, Texas where they lived until her death.

Sister Jansky was a homemaker, devoted to taking care of her husband, children, and home. She was a member of SPJST, KJZT, and the Altar Society.

She is survived by her husband, Joe V. Jansky; daughter, Jo Ann Jansky; sons, Lawrence and Franklin Jansky; father, Jacob Prasek; sister, Martha Orts, all of Poth,except for Franklin who resides in Floresville.

Requiem mass was said in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Blessed Sacrament Cemetery in Poth, Texas. Reverend Hubert Janak officiated.

Brother Soukup was born in Tours and he lived in West a number of years, and then had lived the past 32 years in Bellmead. He worked for the Lone Star Cement Co. 22 years, retiring in 1964.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bellmead and of SPJST Lodge No. 66.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Annie Soukup; a Son, Benny Soukup of 3500 Colcord; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Rudy) Nowlin of 3912 Sleeper and Gracie Soukup of 1506 Oaklawn; a brother, gill Soukup of California; five sisters, Mrs. Rose Stinson of 1416 Oaklawn, Mrs. Marie Buchness of Elm Mott, Mrs. Agnes Gerik, Mrs. Frances Grimm and Mrs. Bessie Velek, all of West; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

ITEMS OF INTEREST MICROWAVE OVEN QUESTIONS

Consumers still question microwave oven safety and radiation factors--but these questions have not stopped the purchases, a family resource management specialist, Lillian Chenoweth, says.

Ms. Chenoweth is with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

She offers some answers to some common questions about microwave ovens: ..What effects do microwaves have on food?

Microwaves do not make food radioactive.

As in any cooking practice, microwave cooking has some effect on the nutritional value of the food.

Most studies, however, show no significant nutritional differences in food heated by microwaves when compared to conventional cooking methods.

In other words, the food is neither more or less nutritious. .. How can the consumer tell if a microwave oven is safe for home use?

All microwave oven models produced after 1971 present no radiation hazard if used according to manufacturer instructions, according to the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

However, the consumer should obtain a statement from the dealer that the oven has been tested for radiation leakage.

Optimally, the oven is also tested after installation in the home. .. What regular safety checks or maintenance should be done?

The Texas Department of Health recommends checking the oven for radiation leakage whenever serviced of if leakage is suspected.

However, there are few officers of that agency with proper equipment to test home microwave ovens.

Consumers can check with their microwave dealer or regional Health office to see if the service is available. .. If no one locally can test a' microwave, what can a consumer do?

Unfortunately, the relatively inexpensive radiation testers on the market are usually not properly calibrated and are inaccurate.

An owner can get a rough idea about the effectiveness of the seal by trying to pull a piece of paper through when the door is closed.

If the paper easily comes through, some leakage may occur.

A second way to check is to use a small fluorescent tube.

While such a tube is not made specifically for this purpose, it can provide a very crude approximation of the leakage present.

To test by this method, operate the microwave oven with some load in it, such as a cup of water.

Both of these methods are very crude and should not take the place of checking with more accurate equipment whenever possible.

Recent research with commercial vending services found only one out of almost 300 ovens to have leakage exceeding the safety standard.

Tax Credit on Renewable-Energy Source Home Equipment

Homeowners who have "gone the extra mile" to install renewable-energy source equipment as a conservation measure may claim a tax credit when filing their 1978 income tax returns.

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 provides for such a credit for solar, geothermal or wind-powered equipment installed since Apr. 20, 1977 to heat or cool the residence or to provide hot water, points out Ashley Lovell, economist in management with the Texas Agricutural Extension Service.

An individual may claim a credit of 30 percent of the first $2,000 invested and 20 percent of the next $8,000 of qualifying expenditures, giving a total maximum credit of $2,200. Use IRS

Equipment providing renewable energy that would qualify for tax credit includes the following: --Solar energy equipment (collec_tors, rockbeds and heat exchangers) tht transforms sunlight into heat or electricty.

Geothermal energy equipment that distributes natural heat in rocks Or water. • Wind energy property that uses wind to produce energy in any form (generally electricity) for residential purposes.

To be eligible, renewable-energy equipment must be installed in or on an individual's principal residence, either owned or rented, points out Lovell. The individual must be the first person using the equipment, and it must have an expected use period of at least five years.

Additional information on tax credits for energy-conscious homeowners is available in IRS publication 903, "Energy Credits for Individuals."

Far too many of us do not drink enough water. In moderate weather the body, which is 65 to 75 percent water, requires five or six glasses each day. In hot weather it requires even more. If the individual engages in strenuous physical activities, the body requires considerably more than the average in order to replenish the supply lost from perspiring.

It is not wise to rely on thirst as an indication of when your body needs water. It is possible to be dehydrated even when thirst is satisfied.

We can live much longer without food than without water. Water performs many vital functions. It constitutes 90 percent of our blood; it enables the kidneys to eliminate waste materials; and it helps regulate body temperature through perspiration.

Everything we consume contains some water. For example, vegetables contain about seventy-five percent, steak sixty percent, and liquids almost 100 percent. In addition the body itself, through oxidation, provides some of the requirements for water. Neither food intake nor natural body processes can provide enough water for survival.

It is wise to make a mental note of how much water you are drinking each day. To be safe, drink an abundance. Too much won't hurt you; too little can. Of course, do not drink immediately after strenuous exercise or when your body is overheated.

Your doctor of chiropractic reminds you that moderation in drinking should not extend to water, because water is vital to the functioning of your body.

Land May Be World's Best Garbage Can Modern industrial nations produce mountainous quantities of waste. The refuse of our society takes many forms: household garbage, sewage effluent and sludge, industrial waste, and spoils dredged from our waterways.

Obviously, everyone wants to get rid of these wastes, but no one wants them dumped near his home or business.

As one frustrated municipal official said, "Everyone wants us to pick up their garbage, but no one wants us to put it down."

A widespread awareness of pollution hazards has caused many of our conventional means of waste disposal to be It is no longer challenged. acceptable to incinerate wastes, except for a very limited number of dangerous chemicals, because of the possibility of air pollution and the high cost of fuel.

Dumping wastes into our streams and oceans is no longer acceptable. And disposal by deep-well injection may harm underground water supplies.

The old-fashioned garbage dumps are illegal in most places. The new version is called a "sanitary landfill"; the name sounds better than the reality. Despite the best efforts to seal the bottoms of the pits and to properly cover the dumping area with soil, water frequently leaches from such landfills and contaminates underground water.

The truth of the matter is that many of our present techniques of waste disposal do not really dispose of wastes. They simply store them for future generations to contend with.

One characteristic of most waste is that it's a highly variable mixture. Of course, if wastes could be sorted into their individual components such as paper, aluminum, oil, zinc, nitrogen, etc., they would no longer be wastes but would be valuable resources. But in most cases it's simply too expensive to separate the mess.

A TAES soil scientist who is an authority on problems connected - with both rural and urban waste disposal says the ideal solution to our growing waste problem is to recycle it at the highest value we can gain from it.

Kirk Brown, TAES soil physicist, says several cities have found that they can profitably remove metal from garbage. Others are carrying it a step further and using the remaining material as a source of energy.

Despite all efforts, however, complete salvage and reuse is often not possible.

Such things as the ash which remains after incineration of garbage and the wastes resulting from small batch processes must still be disposed of.

Brown says his research suggests we should look to nature for help.

In nature

23 much of the waste or dead material falls on the soil where it decomposes. Soil is in fact the medium in which nature disposes of most of her waste. The soil near the earth's surface provides an ideal medium for disposal.

Soil scientists have developed much information useful in designing a proper soilbased disposal system. Soil disposal must be done in such a way that the potentially harmful components of the wastes do not leach through the soil, are not washed off the field in the runoff, and are not blown away.

In addition, application rates must not be so large that material buildup in the soil would limit plant growth or make the vegetation harmful to the animals that might eat it. In short, soil disposal can and must be ecologically and environmentally safe.

"Soil based disposal is presently being done on a limited scale," Brown says.

"Some cities are shredding their garbage and removing the ferrous metal by means of a magnet. The salvaged metal often pays for the shredding operation.

"The waste is then plowed into the soil where it rapidly decomposes. After one or two years the same soil can accept another application.

Such applications can continue until heavy metals (mercury, zinc, copper, lead) build up in the soil.

"Similarly sewage sludge can be , spread on the soil.

Yearly application rates must be limited by the amount of nitrogen in the sludge. But again, the long term use of the land will be regulated by heavy metal build up."

Sewage plant effluent and the liquid waste from many

industrial plants can be spread on the land via conventional irrigation techniques. But the applications must be scheduled so that runoff and erosion problems aren't created.

A complete cover of growing plants for as much of the year as possible is desirable.

Many of the good agricultural practices developed to prevent erosion and increase crop growth including strip cropping, 'plowing on the contour, liming, fertiliiing and maintaining coverage with plants are very important to a soil disposal system.

Remember, the primary ob; jective of such a system is to dispose of wastes; crop yield during or immediately after waste disposal must be of secondary concern.

"Soil as a waste disposal medium uses much less energy than conventional disposal methods and can cut our fuel consumption," says Brown.

"The soil acts as a biological incinerator and needs no input of fossil fuel. And since materials are covered with only a shallow layer of soil, the expense of digging pits is avoided.

"Much is still to be learned about proper management and maintaining of the soil disposal system but some cities and industries are already using it, and I'm convinced that it's use will. become widespread in the future," concludes Brown.

In most of Europe, there was one more holiday at Easter — "Pondeli Velikonoeni". — (Easter Monday).

That was the day for gaity. After six weeks of Lent, the time of sacrifice, came Easter Day (Hod Boil velikonoini), as a day of rejoicing because of Christ's Resurrection, but that still was a day full of deep religious meaning — a .solemn day. Adding of another holiday on Monday gave opportunity for more wordly signs of joy. The boys, from toddlers to young unmarried men, were pursuing girls with gaily decorated whips made of young willow branches. The girls could avoid a "whipping" only by offering the fellows fancily-painted Easter eggs.

Some were fresh eggs while the more elaborately painted ones were only shells. They were fine examples of folk art. In the Eastern part of the country, the customs called also for practical jokes like pouring of cold water over an unspeqing victim, etc. It was not unusual to have a dance on Monday just to give an outlet to the vivacity of the people pinned up during Lent.

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the Birth day. In this country, one's Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in Czechoslovakia, it is put on the same level as the Birthday. On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus (Viclay) or St. Anna, it is not uncommon to have bands of musicians go ing from one Joseph's house to another and serenading him. Also dances are often organized on the nearest Saturday and named Josef ski, Viclayska or Annenski zabava. The word "zabava" stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance.
