FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK .In the January 3, 1979 issue we published, (under Items of Interest) on pages 17, 18 and 19 entitled — Life Insurance: No One Understands It, Everyone Needs It" by Todd Katz. It was purely an informative article for our members and readers, however, we had a call from a member with a question about the chart on page 18.

Please understand that the chart was only an example chart and no particular company was mentioned.

The caller felt that some of the amounts mentioned did not coincide with some rates they are accustomed to. That can be true, however, the entire article must be read and considered in its entirety. We were interested in these paragraphs, especially: Paragraphs 3 and 4, center column, page 18, quote: So what is the careful shopper to do when buying life insurance?

About the best and safest advice: buy from someone you trust, and the following from the center column on page 19, quote: "these figures are the basic policies. They do not take into account various special features sold by the companies, which may make the buy either better or worse. Nor is the integrity and reliability of the company and agent considered.

Youth, today, with proper education and direction, will add new ideals and make new goals. Through the eyes of youth, fraternalism will catch the greater vision and carry it on until the end of time. With the injection of fresh blood in its veins will come a new strength and through youth's ardor and enthusiasm, tempered with matured experience and wisdom we have gained---fraternalism will move forward with an impetus that will lift us to new heights of accomplishments which today we can only visualize in our dreams.

Youth never denies the existence of fundamental well-known standards.

Youth demands analysis, interpretation, proof. Give youth the proof of fitness and efficiency to serve in the future. Is there and good and sufficient reason why our societies (everyone) should not open wide their doors and bid youth a cordial welcome to the secret positions of our lodge rooms? The wisdom, well guided, of mature age, can serve best with an intelligent understanding of the fact that lessons of the past may be most profitable when used in solving problems in the future.

ment are now past the middle age period. We should, in fact as well as in theory, offer our acquired wisdom and sound conclusions to thrilled youth.

Even in large cold-blooded life insurance companies they are unqualified to inculcate and bring to fruition ideas of welfare and family betterment service amongst our children.

No stone should be left unturned to speak to make our adult department attractive and inviting Ao our modern youth and to require no small amount of labor in thought by each individual who calls himself a fraternalist.

Let me also point out to the membership that the two words "Insurance" or "Protection" are broad words and, in this day and age, sociability is seemingly the introductory issue. Without it man could not exist. Last but not least can his dependents exist without the former, "Insurance." Today we are injecting into life insurance the real lessons of thrift and investment. Every juvenile admitted into our SPJST should be educated and equipped with a knowledge of present economic conditions and should realize the wisdom and value of insurance protection.

Our youngsters of today are adults in anticipation. They are constantly looking ahead with the idea that they will become active in the adult lodges.

It is a great custom in the lodges to give assignments and responsibilities in the lodge to the juniors who have been graduated. The young boys and girls hold offices and some endeavor to compose special types of dances for public presentations. It is a known fact that some of our youth at the lodges carry on the meetings and conduct initiatory ceremonies with more precision, in general, than we adults do. The young men and women graduated from junior lodges acquire much talent for parliamentary procedure, oratory and debate. This is excellent training for them.

By giving the youth of the SPJST an excellent program, now is the time of the year for all the youth leaders with their assistants plus any other interested party and , or parties to attend a Youth Lealers' Training Seminar in your district that will be conducted by the State Youth Director, Sister Dorothy Massey and assisted by respective district youth counselors. Most of our readers are aware of the rather large concentration of people the Slavic descent in states north of us, ie. Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, etc. and, in fact, many will remember that the rather well-known Jerry Mazanec and his recording Golden Goose(Zlata Husa) orchestra recorded 78 rpm. records in Cleveland, Ohio where he lives. (This was in the 1940s.) .. This week we received the following report from Cleveland State University(CSU) of a survey held recently which reveals that citizens of ethnic descent do take interest in various ethnic endeavors. The report is reprinted here for our members' and readers' information.

Very probably the report and survey is rather representative of most sections and probably,in Texas, the percentage would be greater.

ETHNIC MEDIA USE HIGH, CSU STUDY FINDS Most people of ethnic descent in the Cleveland area read an ethnic newspaper and listen to ethnic radio programming, a new study from Cleveland State University indicates.

Professors Leo W. Jeffres and K. Kyoon Hur of CSU's Department of Communication have issued a report on "Ethnic Communication in Cleveland" through CSU's Communication Research Center and Ethnic Heritage Studies Center.

They found that more than half the 768 people surveyed by mail read an ethnic newspaper, and three-fourths listen to an ethnic radio program.

About 30 per cent read an ethnic magazine.

Newspaper readers, the authors found, particularly like news of their local ethnic communities and news from the "old country." Ethnic radio is used mainly as a source of music.

Many people who responded to the survey would like more ethnic newspapers and radio programs, along with an increase in local news.

Some asked that "editorial bias" in ethnic newspapers be controlled.

Both the Cleveland Press and Plain Dealer have high readership among those surveyed. The Press is given the

highest ratings among local media for its coverage of ethnic affairs.

In general most ethnic people surveyed have few complaints about the image the mass media present of ethnic groups: 30 per cent thought it positive, 42 per cent neutral, and only 28 per cent unfavorable or very unfavorable.

"Our survey makes it clear that coverage of ethnic groups by the metropolitan mass media needs to be increased," said the authors. "At a time when Clevelanders are digging into their city's past, it would seem that attention to ethnics' contributions, problems and prospects would be essential to an understanding of the city and its future."

Respondents to the survey are active in ethnic groups and have many ethnic friends. Almost a third belong to three or more ethnic organizations. Almost half said that more than two-thirds of their friends are from the same ethnic group.

A large majority have at least one relative in the mother country, and more than half correspond regularly, the survey shows.

Almost half belong to an ethnic church. Most respondents celebrate one or two holidays or festivals. Half have spoken to their children about their ethnic heritage. A total of 55 per cent speak the ethnic language at least moderately well.

Jeffres and Hur called their work an "exploratory study," and said more work needs to be done.

"Much larger samples are needed for us to examine communication within individual ethnic groups," they said. "More ethnic groups than participated in the present study should be involved in future research."

Jeffres added that he hopes anyone interested in further research will take advantage of the new master's program in communication at CSU. In the present survey, 13 groups were included: Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Lebanese, Lithuanian, Polish, Puerto Rican-Latin American, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian and Ukrainian.

The authors cautioned that ethnic people who don't speak English and those with little ethnic identity are probably underrepresented in the survey.

The Society has acquired by foreclosure the surface of a 325-acre tract of land in Runnels County, Texas.

The property is located 12 miles east of Winters on FM 1770 to Novice. It is approximately six miles east of the junction of FM 2647 and FM 1770. The tract is rectangular in shape bounded by FM 1770 on the north and a gravel road on the west. The tract is suitable for grazing, has good fences and a stock tank. There is a dwelling in good condition located on the northwest corner of the tract. It is built on a slab, has metal roof and metal siding and has approximately 1500 sq. ft. of living area.

Mikeska Secretary-Treasurer ** EXCERPTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE FIRST REGULAR QUARTERLY MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE SPJST HELD JANUARY 9, 10, and 11, 1979 AT THE HOME OFFICE IN TEMPLE, TEX. The meeting was called to order January 9, 1979, at 9 a.m. with all Supreme Lodge members present.

MINUTES - The minutes of the October 10-12, 1978 Supreme Lodgq, meeting were brought up for consideration. It was agreed to dispense with their reading, but opportunity was given to point out any corrections that might be needed. The minutes were approved with one correction.

PRESIDENT MORRIS' REPORT President Morris submitted for consideration an SOP for Supreme Lodge meeting agendas. In substance, he submitted a proposal, on behalf of the Supreme Lodge officers, that the time has come to deal with the volume of matters before the Supreme Lodge on an even more business and professional basis and that the business matters should be handled as expeditiously as possible in the interest of economy, time and clarity of indexing the Supreme Lodge minutes, and that if all the members of the Supreme Lodge subscribe and adhere to these suggestions, meetings will be streamlined and the same amount of work will be accomplished

A motion was adopted that every effort would be made to streamline all Supreme Lodge meetings.

President Morris referred to his original and supplemental reports and to a number of letters, copies of which were made available to the Supreme Lodge members, including the State Youth Director's report.

CZECH LANGUAGE - There was a discussion and agreement that evidence be obtained that the emphasis in classroom instruction be devoted to the Czech language in the Czech courses taught at schools supported

5 NFCA MID-YEAR PRESIDENTS' SEMINAR - President Morris reported he had been asked to be one of the speakers at the seminar. The seminar will also involve a panel discussion on "The Role of the President's Spouse".

President Morris and his wife were authorized to attend the seminar.

SPJST CALENDAR - A bid for the SPJST calendar for 1980 was reviewed and accepted.

SUBSIDY TO A CZECH INSTRUCTOR - After discussion, the matter was tabled because it was determined that additional salary subsidy was not authorized by the convention, based on information at hand.

SPJST FILM - A proposal to do a film production was presented, and it was agreed to first proceed with a prepared slide presentation before considering a film.

AMERICAN CAMPING ASSOC. MEETING - After discussion, a motion was adopted to authorize SYD Massey to attend the ACA meeting in 1979.

SPJST AUTOMOBILES - A draft of the SOP for use of the automobiles was considered and accepted.

President Morris' written and oral report was accepted to be placed of record.

by the SPJST, with it being pointed out that we are mandated to support the instruction of the Czech language.

YOUTH COMMITTEE - There was a review of the minutes of the last convention concerning the Youth Committee that is to research a Family Youth Camp, as per motion passed in the last convention.

After discussion, a motion was adopted that a letter be written to the Youth Committee by the president and legal advisor calling their attention to the convention action regarding study of the Family Youth Camp and reporting to the next convention.

He gave a detailed explanation of various items in his written report and several were discussed by the body.

TOTAL INSURANCE APPLICATIONS WRITTEN - The total of insurance applications written during 1978 was $22,948,955.00. A dual system of reporting would be started for 1979 that would list actual insurance issued in addition to amount of applications written.

DISTRICT SALES REPRESENTATIVES - It was decided that the District Sales Representatives be paid a 5 percent bonus if their 1979 quota is met as in the past.

The Supreme Lodge favorably considered a banquet honoring the 1978 million dollar producers.

Vice President Gebala's report was accepted to be placed of record.

SECRETARY-TREASURER MIKESKA'S REPORT He explained and discussed various items in his original and supplemental reports.

REAL ESTATE LOANS - A list of 16 loans delinquent 3 or more months was considered and actions were authorized on each.

6 OFFICERS' MEETINGS - The minutes of two officers' meetings held October 13th and December 1, 1978, concerning investments, were accepted.

SECURITIES AND CERTIFI CATES OF DEPOSIT PURCHASED THIS QUARTER - After a report was given, the purchases and renewal were ratified.

LOAN APPLICATIONS - After discussion, it was agreed to allocate $225,000.00 per district for real estate loans for this quarter.

After due consideration, the interest rate was raised from 9 percent to 91/4 percent.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting was called back to order January 10 at 9 a.m.

LOAN APPLICATION FEES Changes in the loan application fees were considered. After considerable study and discussion, a motion was adopted to accept the new fees proposed with the provision that any unused portion of the fee would be refunded if the loan was not committed.

Due to the nationwide increases in interest rates, after discussion, the interest' rate to lodges was raised from 7 percent to 8 percent.

REO NO. 158 - Formerly REL No. 9811 - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported on foreclosure of the property situated in Runnels County and stated that it had been agreed to list it at $275.00 per acre. After discussion, authorization was given to negotiate for sale of the property as reported.

VESTNIK CONTRACT - Concerning adjustment of the contract with the Vestnik publisher, since the cost of living index figures were not available, the Supreme Lodge officers were authorized to make the adjustment as soon as the figures are available.

IRS FORMS 990 AND 990-T - He discussed some problem areas in connection with local lodges filing the forms.

GROUP HOSPITALIZATION - He reported a small increase in premiums for the SPJST Group Hospitalization plan.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING FOR HOME OFFICE - The need for lighting the Home Office grounds was discussed and it was decided to install lights.

TRANSFER OF FUNDS - Authority was asked and granted for transfer of funds in our depositories, as allowed in the by-laws.

MANAGEMENT SEMINAR - Au-

thorization was sought and granted for Home Office employees Dorothy Tomasek, Norma Andel and Linda Johnson to attend a seminar for administrative assistants at Baylor University on February 1 and 8, 1979.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's report was accepted to be placed of record.

FINANCIAL SECRETARY MIKULA'S REPORT He referred to his written report and commented on several items in the report.

VESTNIK MAILING LIST - Consideration was given to some method of updating our Vestnik mailing list. This item had been postponed from the last Supreme Lodge meeting and came up because of sizeable increases in Vestnik postage costs. As requested by the Supreme Lodge, a letter had been written to each. Publication Committee member and the editor asking for suggestions for implementing the project. A letter was received from one Publication Committee member and from one member and oral suggestions were given by the Publication Committee chairman.

A proposed notice and postage-paid card was presented for consideration and it was agreed to proceed as outlined.

DISCOUNT ON "A" AND "B" CERTIFICATES - A motion was adopted that the usual discount of 25 percent on premiums be granted to all members in Class "A" and "B" whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained the age of 70 or more, plus an additional 25 percent discount when they attain the age of 75.

PITNEY BOWES POSTAGE MACHINE - The need for a new postage machine at a cost of $2,490.00 was explained and purchase of a new machine was authorized.

PREMIUM REFUND - He referred to a letter from Actuary David Huff recommending that the minimum refund be increased from $1.00 to $1.20 and that the rate be left at $1.25 percent for 1979. The minimum refund of $1.20 was adopted. Decision was reached to leave the premium refund rate at 1.25 percent.

Financial Secretary Mikulas' report was accepted to be placed of record.

LEGAL ADVISOR LESIKAR'S REPORT

He referred to his detailed report and discussed several items included

in the report. He commented on some loans in process, a foreclosure in process, a pending lawsuit and the question of incorporating the SPJST Museum.

Legal Advisor Lesikar's report was accepted to be placed of record.

NFCA - Dir. Pokladnik reported that the NFCA Fraternal and Press and Public Relations Section seminar was scheduled for San Antonio. He was authorized to attend the seminar.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:05 p.m. and the meeting was called back to order on January 11, 1979 at 9 a.m.

Dir. Hanus discussed and commented on various matters.

Dir. Vitek was chosen by the directors to report on results of the directors' audit. Information was asked regarding a number of items and explanations were given.

Question was raised as to the manner of election of local lodge officers. After discussion, the members of the Supreme Lodge requested the secretary-treasurer to write a letter to a local lodge that voting by absentee ballot is irregular and not permitted by our by-laws.

Dir. Kubena suggested that the April meeting be set to begin at 1 p.m., to allow saving of one night's lodging.

Dir. Bayer referred to a letter he had received from a member concerning purchase of the company automobiles.

The written Report of Directors will be placed of record.

EMPLOYEES' SALARIES - The recommendation of the Supreme Lodge officers was considered at length, after which it was accepted as amended.

President Morris stated that if there were no objections, he would schedule all future Supreme Lodge meetings for the third week so that all officers' reports would be current.

The Binghams have started their deeds for the year for SPJST Lodge 172. Ann told me how enthused the residents of Faith Memorial Nursing Home were when they took some clothing there.

There has been so much rain, fog and just plain `ole' dreary weather here, that I have just cancelled my trips to Cameron, Texas. My sister once told me that every time I went to Cameron to visit, it rained (which, 99 percent of the time, was true), but you know when you see pictures and articles that Brother John Stasa writes from Corpus Christi, it sure makes me want to go back and visit around the Bryant Station community. Time changes and I know it has there, but it makes one happy to see the community they were raised in prosper and grow.

I talked to J.B. Jackson and he told me that Lucille was feeling better after her visit in the hospital. Sorry you've been ill, but we are happy you are up and about. If anyone is ill, let's trust they are feeling better.

The Willie Maleks are spending the weekend in Corpus Christi. Their daughter and her husband, Pat and George, had the pleasure of getting to take them. Knowing them, they all had fun.

The newsbee told me what for! He said if I didn't hurry up and get my bones well and start getting out he just didn't know what he's going to do.

Says he needs a vacation. I guess he does. Poor thing, he was buzzing around my plants that I have. Some plastic bird of, paradise is thinking they were real.

Dear Members: Our newly-elected President Henry Linhart called our regular monthly meeting to order Friday, February 2nd, at 8 p.m.

We had 33 members plus 3 guests present.

Pledge of allegiance to our flag was recited by the membership and guests.

Roll call of officers was given by Sister Alice Jochen and all officers' reports were given.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read by our secretary and approved as read.

New applicants for last month were (additional insurance): William White and Terry Lee Kieschnick, and (new applicants): Ralph E. Bender, Edward Baumar, Robert Dewey Chapman, Jr., Barbara Ann Veselka, Mark Lynn Veselka, Melissa Lynn Veselka, Howard Edmund. Kieschnick, Nancy Gail Jones, and Megan Ann Moore.

Sales Representatives were Sidon Tumis (6), Alvin Melnar (3), and Robert Kieschnick (3).

We are sorry to report one of our members, who is dear to many of the membership, as being ill. Mr. Eric (Butch) Stein is confined to St. Luke's Hospital. We are glad to report that he is feeling better but has to be in the hospital a few more days. Hurry and get well, Butch!

One of our visitors was Brother Louis Hanus, District V director, and

he made a nice speech congratulating our Board of Trustees for the good work being done by them. Our other visitor, Evelyn Mikeska, District V sales representative, spoke briefly and congratulated the district for being No. 2 in sales for 1978. She said our quota for 1979 will be the same.

We had an attendance prize drawing again. This time the winner would have been Br. Frank Turn is for $10.

Sorry, Br. Tumis, you were absent because you could have been $10 richer. Next month's drawing will be $15. else could I read and be informed about all the members I have known in my lifetime? The families live in Dallas, Ennis, West, Temple, Seaton, Buckholts, Holland, Elgin, Round Rock, San Antonio, Robstown, Corpus Christi, Houston, etc.

However, letters which state that members never read the Vestnik dishearten me. Perhaps there are isolated cases but I do not think they speak for the majority of the members. In our home I very often leave the Vestnik on the table in the family room, including the SPJST Calendar. Our friends of other nationalities very often pick it up and inquire what SPJST stands for and will glance through it. I think this helps others to learn about our Fraternal Society. In my opinion the letters which are written by the members sort of hold us together.

The reports of our organization show we are growing by leaps and bounds, and if we could have afforded publication and postage during depression years --- we certainly can afford it today. I am, also, a firm believer of Freedom of the Press. This is in reference to Editorial of January 24th.

The Board of Trustees' meeting was held Friday, February 2nd. A new juvenile member, Billy Floyd Jones was accepted into our lodge.

Youth leader's report given by Sister Willie Mae Schuetz was that the youth will visit the rest home February 14th at 7 p.m. They are practicing the Beseda to dance at the

10 Irving Mall. They visited the SPJST Museum Sunday, January 28th and will have a Valentine party Friday, February 16th and a kite contest at the March meeting.

Brother Schuetz gave the hall chairman's report. V S TN f K LODGE NO. 178, LONGVIEW Dear Members of Lodge 178: For all of you who missed the last meeting, there was the installation of the new officers for 1979. During the past two months we've lost two of our members: Brother Robert Burnett and Brother Minor Burns. We are all saddened by this and send our condolences to their families.

The members present at the meeting agreed that we need to get more of our members to participate in our activities. Starting recently, we will be having dances each Friday night in addition to the one we have each Saturday night, so come help if you can.

All members should be getting an invitation soon to our first annual members' party. This is in celebration of our first year in our new lodge. If by some chance you don't get an invitation, please call me and let me know. My number is 759-9603. Because of this party our regular meeting will be held on the fourth Sunday, instead of the third Sunday.

I hope we see all our members there.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON I've had numerous questions asking why I had no letter in the Vestnik of January 31st; only thing I can say is that I personally took the letter to the Post Office as usual and deposited it into the mail slot and that was three in the afternoon. Where it went from there is a mystery to me. With the mail delivery as it is, no wonder my Vestnik of January 17th never found my mail box. I am sure whenever my letter arrives at the printshop, our editor will see to it that it will be printed.

How long this terrible weather will hang around nobody knows, but I am sure everyone had a fill of rain, cold and gloomy skies, but, even at that, it had no effect on our attendance at our dances. The Friday western dance with Bobby Heiman was well-attended and Saturday, Feb. 3rd, with Ed Gerlach, a special dress affair, was a complete sellout. All the ladies were dressed beautifully including our three hostesses. In charge of the evening were Milert and Evelyn Antrich and daughter, Carolyn Morse, also Bob and Ruth Martinak; all five were busy until everyone was seated at their tables.

Table 8, which is Della Kadlecek's table reserved the year around, held three stars of the last English production of "The Eager Miss Beaver", they assembled to celebrate three birthdays and have a good time: Ruth Durham, Arnold Spencer and Amos Kadlecek,,all three showed talent and gave the audience a good afternoon of entertainment January 28th. In this group birthdays were celebrated by Allen Peeples (the 2nd), Amos Kadlecek (the 4th) and Loleta Peeples (the 11th). The table was surrounded by G.C. Renfro, Annie Green, E. Slanina, Naomi Spencer, Della Kadlecek, Joe Cutaia and Carolyn Oddo. "Happy Birthday" song rang out to the celebrants and all imaginable goodies appeared on the table.

The Keatings (Noble and Kay), as usual, had a full table of 14 jolly people to enjoy the Ed Gerlach dance and talk about delicious food! Their table looked like a display of specialties.

Brother Raymond Klechka celebrated his 70th birthday at the Sokol lodge, Friday, Feb. 2nd, with a decorated cake with candles to blow out and make a wish and lot of other delicious goodies. Raymond had a good time and enjoyed his 70th birthday with his friends. Happy Birthday to all!

Sister Mary Russell, Birthday Club Sister, is seriously ill in Heights Hospital. Mary, for the past year, was confined quite a few times at length in the hospital; this time she entered two weeks ago, for how long she will have to stay is not known. Mary, best wishes!

Our anniversary celebration was well-attended, the dinner served at noon consisted of braised beef and all the trimmings. To the ladies go many thanks for all the home-baked pastry so generously donated. At 1:30 p.m. the social started with the early bird and followed with our regular social games until 4 p.m. and a free dance followed to 9 p.m. All through the afternoon and evening the Blue Room was filled with members and their friends to enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

Hlahol Dramatic Club's annual meeting is held tonight as I announced in my lost letter; I will report on our proceedings next week. The Hlahol has a called meeting after every performance and a social always follows.

March 23rd. They will serve a chili and tamale supper prior to the western dance that night. Plan on coming out, you will like it, they really specialize in it.

The Guy Lombardo Saturday night dance, March 10th, is completely sold out. You may place your name on the waiting list in case there might be a cancellation. Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox said there are a few tickets open for Friday night, March 9th. If you wish to come Friday, call the lodge office 869-5767 and the two sisters there will assist you. In any case, place your name on the waiting list for either night; in case of a cancellation, you will be notified.

Our Christmas tree party last December is only a memory now but I would like to bring it back to mind for this season. Each year we await old Santa to come walking into the door of our lodge hall knowing for certain that he will do so, just as he has been doing for about thirty years. Soon we hear his bells ringing and feel a cold blast of air from the entry and all eyes, young and old, turn to see this most welcome guest. Then there's pandemonium, squeals of delight, little feet rushing and stumbling but true in their course and all those last few hours of waiting culminate in pleasureable fulfillment.

Since there is little chance that any pre-schoolers or other small children will be reading this, it is safe to disclose that old faithful Santa is our own lodge Brother John Skrasek. He so willingly poses with the tots, so patiently presents each of the huge mound of gifts and passes out hundreds of bags of treats. For all of this I wonder just how many of us have ever personally thanked John for the pleasure he has given to our children and now to some of our grandchildren.

I hope that the photo I sent to the Vestnik will accompany this commendation for our generous friend.

CZECH WOMEN

February is known as the "love" month. Remember to show your appreciation and love to your loved ones in some nice way.

The Dallas Circle of Czech Women met Thursday, February 1, at 10:30 a.m. President Ella Bartos called the meeting to order. After the pledge of allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Mrs. Marie Urban, mother of Sister Dorothy Urban; Mr. James Tullis, husband of Sister Marie Tullis; and Mr. Willie Lesikar, husband of Sister Adela Lesikar. Sincere sympathy is extended to them and their families.

Financial-membership Chairperson Rose Kopecek reported that we have 98 on the membership roll; this includes 10 honorary members.

During 1978 two members passed away, 3 resigned and 4 joined the Circle.

Corresponding Secretary Mary Sebestik read thank-you notes from the family of John Baleja, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor for the poinsettia

plant and for the donOon in memory of John Baleja, and Sister Dorothy Reznik for flowers sent to her mother's funeral. Letters of resignation from 2 members were read.

Sister Millie Noska sent 12 cards to the sick, bereaved, and others. On behalf of the Circle, Sister Liddie Pavelka took a poinsettia plant at Christmas to Sister Marie Tullis, who is in the Seagoville Lodge Nursing Home. A monetary donation was given to the Seagoville Lodge Nursing Home in memory of James Tullis.

Sister Agnes Hemzal, who is 96 years young, sent her greetings. The revised by-laws were read, discussed and approved. An appreciation dinner, sponsored by the American Czech Culture Society, was held Sunday, January 28, at the Sokol Athletic Center, honoring the officers, delegates, and workers at the Czech Day at the State Fair. Phil Reames, president of the society, presented Bob Oates, husband of Sister Helen Oates, a lovely plaque for outgoing president in 1977(belated); he served for 3 years. Congratulations, Bob! Several sisters of the Circle attended this lovely dinner.

There were 40 members and 4 guests at our meeting. The guests were Lucille Stout, Frank Kankrlik, George Skotak and Bob Zvolanek.

FEATURES ALVIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE RECEIVES CONTRIBUTION FOR CZECH STUDIES Alvin Community College has been presented with another $300 contribution from the SPJST Supreme Lodge, to be used in support of Czech language instruction at the college.

ACC has just completed its 9th semester of instruction, with Mr. William Souchek of Houston as instructor. Much of the support for this program has come from the annual contributions made by the SPJST and the Farmers Mutual Protective Association of Texas (RVOS).

According to Dr. Paul V. Webber, "we are truly proud of the way in which these members of our service area have not only worked at learning the Czech language, but also have supported learning (of others) through extra effort. They have provided financial assistance to students of Czech background through various fund-raising activities of the ACC Czech Club. This is a very good example of the, community college relations -- the community as a part of the college."

The current class of Conversational Czech meets on Tuesday evenings, 6:30 - 9:30, through April 10.

LICENSE PLATE STICKERS STICK TO EVERYTHING! Application for new motor vehicle registration plates is more simple in Texas this year that at any time since World War II. Instead of new' metal plates the Department of Highways and Public Transportation (DHT) is isming validation stickers to be applied to the upper left-hand corner of the rear plate issued last year. An adhesive on the back of the sticker foiLs removal of the sticker by would-be thieves — or motorists who foul up the instructions for application.

And, of course, there have been some almost unbelievable lashups by otherwise intelligent motorists. For instance: A motorist in Corpus Christi was very careful to put the validation sticker in the proper position on the rear plate — except that it was his neighbor's car. Both vehicles, parked side by side, were red.

In Amarillo, a motorist paid for his sticker and immediately went to the parking lot of the county courthouse. He applied the sticker vehicle owned by the assistant to the rear license plate — of the county tax assessor-collector. Same make, same model, same color — wrong car.

One woman received her sticker in the mail. She wanted to see how well the "stickum" on the back worked. She pat it on the kitchen table. It worked fine. She scraped off the pieces (and part of the finish on the table) and returned them to the tax collector for replacement.

Another woman laid her sticker on the kitchen table. Her young son picked it up and put it on his bicycle.

A motorist picked up a validation sticker to register his pickup and his passenger car. He got them reversed. Two more reissues.

Another motorist went back to his tax assessor-collector. He was plenty mad as he displayed a sticker almost obliterated with holes.

"I'm having a ---. time stapling this — thing to my metal plate," he fumed. The information "staple here" is information for the tax collector's office to indicate where to attach the sticker to the re gistration receipt. He got a new one.

One registrant bought stickers for two cars but left one on the counter. The next man in line thought he needed two stickers, so he picked up the one he needed for his vehicle and the "extra."

At last report they were trying to find him. The first motorist got a replacement sticker.

DISTRICT II YOUTH COUNSELOR The new year is well on its way and soon it will be spring and many youth activities will begin. In fact this is to let everyone in District II know that we are going to have our annual District II skating party February 18th at Skate Haven in Temple just north of the high school, from 5 to 7 p.m. and, as usual, many door prizes will be given. We want everyone to put this date down on your calendar so you can be sure not to forget it. You will be allowed to bring a visitor to this activity. We again remind you to ask your visitor to join your lodge and youth club. Let's all plan to come to this skating party and let's have the biggest one we ever had. All of the youth members can meet their friends from the other lodges in the district.

The District II youth leaders and assistants seminar will be held much earlier this year. This is due to the fact that we have so many new youth leaders in our district. The class is scheduled to be held at Lodge No. 29, Taylor on February 26th, beginning sharply at 9:30 a.m. This should also allow everyone sufficient time to get there on the scheduled time. We plan to finish at about 4:30 or 5 p.m. All youth leaders should be present at this seminar and please bring your assistants if at all possible. In fact, if anyone else is interested in the youth department, they may also attend.

SYD Sister Massey will be present and will have all of the forms for the new youth year beginning June 1, 1979. She also will show us a craft we plan to use at camp this summer and all youth forms win again be discussed. Please make every effort to attend.

Then, on March 11th through March 16th, the Longhorn Recreating Lab (LRL) will be held. This will be at the new 4-H Club Center in Brownwood.

This lab is not only an SPJST project but includes many leaders from 4-H Clubs and also county agents and people from state hospitals, rest homes and many other places that sponsor recreational activities. The reason for this lab is for recreational leaders to exchange ideas in the field of recreation. The SPJST, is again paying the tuition for the youth leaders and the DYCs, so all you have to do is to devote your time to get to

attend this great lab. If any of you would like more information about . this lab, please contact SYD Dorothy Massey.

The SPJST will also sponsor a youth leaders' and assistants' seminar. This is only a weekend and you are allowed to bring your spouse to attend with you. This will be held March 31st and April 1st at Herrington's Camp, near Austin. This weekend includes all youth leaders and assistants from the entire state, so you can get to meet many leaders from other lodges in the state and be able to learn more about our youth program and what other clubs are doing.

Mark your calendar for March 25th which will be the District II spring meeting at Lodge 18 in Elgin. The details of this meeting have not yet been completed; however, more information on this meeting at a later date.

I would like to remind all of the youth to start planning your crafts and talents, so if you have any spare time from your school activities you can start making your crafts. The YAD crafts, talent and royalty will be held July 8th. This seems a long way off but it is not.

The youth members who are interested in attending camp should be sure they are attending their youth club meetings so they would be eligible to attend camp this year. The dates for this are not yet final but will be published as soon as available.

DISTRICT IV YOUTH COUNSELOR There are two activities that will be coming up soon for District IV. First, the District-IV training class for all the youth leaders and their assistants on March 5th at 9:30 a.m., at the home of Mary Haisler. This is an important meeting because all of the rule changes and activities are planned and discussed, so please be present and voice your opinion.

Second, is the District IV meeting on April 22nd. The youth will have the same contests as in the previous years. We had a good turnout last year, so let's do it again.

Dear Members and Readers, The youth club meeting was held February 4th. The attendance was good for a rainy Sunday.

We have a new member, Dayrel Helona. We are glad to have you with us.

Our club will be going to the West Rest Haven on February 14th at 7 p.m.

We will have a Valentine party, games, Valentine card contest and exchange Valentines. You may bring a friend.

For our March 4th meeting, we will have a kite contest and the kites will be judged on the prettiest, ugliest, oddest, smallest flying kite and highest flying kite.

We will start practicing for Easter program soon.

The club members, parents and some of our lodge members toured the SPJST Museum January 28th.

Everyone enjoyed the tour. Thank you Brother Hanus for touring with us through the museum. Also, thank you to Brother Robert and Sister Lydia Dobecka for getting the date set that we would go.

Dear Youth Club Members, On Sunday, February 4, Lodge 88 held its 13th anniversary. A large number of brothers and sisters were present in spite of the rainy weather.

The junior and intermediate youth groups sponsored different games throughout the day in our youth room.

The teen group followed by selling popcorn and nachos during the free dance by Joe Patek. All but a few teens were present to help make the day a big success.

Wednesday, February 6 was our first scheduled Beseda practice for the new year. Marian Kadlecek and I were busy helping the three different circles along, who did just great.

The following Thursday the youth club sponsored a bake sale during our social night. Thanks to all who donated and purchased the delicious homemade goodies for this successful project.

The week was rounded out by our monthly business meeting. After the meeting, an original and very enjoyable time was had by all at our Valentine party.

Don't forget teens to mark your calendar for these important dates:

Saturday, March 3'- Rodeo - Kenny Rogers and Dotty West.

This day will also serve as our meeting date since we will all be assembled as a group. There will also be a contest for the best westerndressed boy and girl in each different age group, so let's all dress western.

Wednesday, February 14, 1979 MINUTES OF LODGE NO. 54, WEST YOUTH CLUB Dear Readers, President Greg Hutyra convened the February 7th meeting at 7 p.m.

The register revealed a nice number of members and adults attending the meeting.

We dispensed with the reading of the minutes from the previous meeting.

Correspondence was from Six Flags Over Texas advising us about the admission for 1979 which will be $9.25 per person. It was later discussed under new business.

Treasurer's report was presented on the dues collected before the meeting, on our checking account and savings account. Favorable comments were expressed from various members about the way we handle our business affairs efficiently.

There being no old business, the chairman then called for new business which included the admission to Six Flags and our District III activities as well as local activities. Everyone was encouraged to enter and participate in every category for the District III Youth Achievement Day, which will be held the last Sunday in June at Lodge No. 178 in Longview. Our next youth club meeting was set for March 7th at 7 p.m.

Sharon Maier was our only birthday celebrant in February; her birthday is February 13th.

After the meeting everyone enjoyed the social and wished Sharon a happy birthday.

I hope to see a lot of you at next month's meeting.

Dear Readers, After several days of icy weather, we were able to have our January meeting. We had 21 members and both of our youth leaders were in attendance.

We discussed old business briefly and then we touched on new business which consisted of our future summer activities outlined by the leaders.

There were no January birthday celebrants.

The president adjourned the meeting until February 7th at 7 p.m.

LODGE NO. 30, TAITON

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club met at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Community Center. President Karen Kahanek opened the meeting. Kristine Krpec led the pledge of allegiance and Karen Kahanek led the prayer.

Poems were read about Valentine's Day by some of the members. Also some of the members made Valentines, were judged on them and received prizes. In my age group those receiving prizes 'were: Janna Dornak, 1st; Michelle Srubar, 2nd; and Amy Kresta, 3rd.

Our next money project is selling tickets on a quilt and about 7 more different things. These will be given away at the District VI spring meeting, which will be held at Lodge No. 30 at Taiton in March. I do hope there will be a lot of people who will attend.

Our other money project will be selling sandwiches at the battle dances held at the Taiton Community Center.

Dear Members and Friends, Our February monthly meeting started at 8 p.m. by Vice President Russell Bond. We recited the pledge of allegiance and a moment of silent prayer followed.

who died Monday, January 22, 1979, at the age of 51 in Baylor Hospital, Dallas.

Brother Burns was born February 15, 1927 in Canton, Texas, and moved to Longview 32 years ago.

He was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 31 years.

In addition to his other activities, Brother Burns was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 178, member of the Civitan Club, past president of the Telephone Pioneers, past Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop No. 213, and past Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop No. 372. He was assistant Scout Master at the time of his death.

20 His ambition was to devote his time to scouting after his retirement. Due to his devotion and love for scouting, it was requested that donations be sent to Minor S. Burns, Jr. Memorial Fund, Boy Scouts of America.

He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, and a member of the Founders Christian Church of Longview.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 24th at 10 a.m. in the Rader Funeral Home Chapel in Longview with Rev. Tom Plumbley, assisted by Dr. Sloan Gentry officiating. Burial followed in Memory Park Cemetery, Longview, under the direction of Rader Funeral Home.

Brother Burns was preceded in death by his father, Minor S. Burns, and mother, Mae Terry.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Margie Burns; son, Rodney Burns, both of Longview; daughter, Mrs. Ginger Wails of Genoa, Nebraska ; brothers, H.J. Burns and Robert L. Burns, both of Kilgore and William Burns of Kingsman, Arizona ; sisters, Mrs. Ina Mae Hood, Gautier, Mississippi; Mrs. Hazel Utzman, Kilgore; half sisters, Mrs. Norma Jean Corry and Miss Edie Ruth Terry, both of Canton, Texas; grandsons, Jerry Lynn Wails and Tracy Don Wails, both of Genoa, Nebraska and Bret James Burns of Longview.

Brother Minor was a very devoted, active and proud member who promoted benevolence, the SPJST Society and its purpose. He was a member of the Entertainment Committee, and served loyally in so many wonderful ways.

No words can express our sympathy and sense of loss at the passing of Brother Minor, so if you will, remember him in your prayers.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple, in behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of RALPH DOSHIER,

who died Monday, January 29, 1979, in a Temple hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Doshier was seventy-five (75) years old and resided at 908 East Barton. Temple. He had been active in

civic affairs for many years and was formerly in the potato chip business in Temple.

He was a former Bell County commissioner and mayor pro-tem; he served as Temple city commissioner from 1952 to 1954 and served as mayor pro-tern from 1954 to 1956. In 1964 he was elected county commissioner and held that post until 1972. In 1978 the Temple Optimist Club honored him as its man of the year.

In civic affairs, Mr. Doshier was a past president of the Temple Optimist Club, Elks Club, Bell County Sheriff's Posse, SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple Chamber of Commerce, Temple USO Club, Temple Longhorn Riding Club and Temple Square Dance Club. With his wife, Mary Louise, he was co-chairman of Camp Kachina for Girl Scouts. He was also a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church and OX5 Club of the Pioneer Airmen.

He was born in Yellville, Arkansas, and had been a resident of Temple since 1908.

Mass was recited Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church with Rev. Edward Jordan and Rev. Fred Bowmar officiating. Rosary was said at Hill Funeral Home.

Mr. Doshier is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Louise Doshier of Temple; daughter, Mrs. Curtis Bowman of Hemet, California; a brother, King Doshier, Jr. of Perkinston, Mississippi; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family requested that donations be made to the Bell County Rehabilitation Center in lieu of flowers.

HARRY ALFRED KOTRLA age 67, of Route 3, Temple, who died Thursday, February 1, 1979 in a car accident near Seaton, on Highway 53.

He was born in Ellinger and had lived in the Seaton area most of his life. He was a farmer and also was employed at the Chupik Corporation in Temple.

Mr. Kotrla was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47, RVOS No. 5, and the Seaton Brethren Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Saturday, February 3, at Seaton Brethren Church with the Rev. Milton Maly officiating. Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery. Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple was in charge of arrangements.

ITEMS OF INTEREST THE FIRST CZECH IMMIGRANT GROUP TO TEXAS SAILS ON BRITISH SHIP "MARIA" Late in 1851 on December 2, the ship MARIA sailed out of Liverpool with the first group of 74 Czech immigrants into Texas. Sixty-three days later on February 3, 1852, the MARIA arrived at New Orleans with those passengers who survived the voyage. In addition to the seventy-four Czechs who boarded at Liverpool there were 221 Irish and German immigrants coming to the new land, making a total of 295 persons starting the trip.

The MARIA was a ship rigged packet ship built in Quebec, Canada in 1849 by Thomas Hamilton Oliver who sent and sold her to his brother, Edward Oliver, merchant in Liverpool in 1850. One year later, the MARIA was bought by James Baines (merchant), and Thomas Mackay

(shipwright) of Liverpool, later owners of the famous British Black Ball Line of ships. The MARIA was also used on the gold run to Australia and foundered at sea in 1853 after a life of only four years.

On the voyage which brought the Czech immigrants to America, she was under Captain James Nichol (Bully) Forbes who later became famous for his runs to Australia on the CLEOPATRA, MARCO POLO, and the LIGHTNING which set a record of 63 days from Melbourne to Liverpool, a record never broken.

The MARIA was built of oak, hackmatack and pine and was of 1014 tons register or 873 tons net. She had one main deck and a poop deck and was of 150 feet long, 32 feet wide and 22 feet in depth. A woman's figure adorned her head and she was originally built rigged with three masts. This configuration was later changed to a barque rig as shown in the photograph.

Most of the Czech passengers who arrived on the MARIA first settled in Austin County in the Cat Spring-New Ulm-Industry area. Some later settled in Burleson County and many descendants still live there. Others settled over various parts of Texas.

These 17 families were all from Cechy near the Moravian border from the villages of Cermna, Ceska Trebova and Lanskroun. Most of them were Protestants.

There were nine members from one Shiller family in the group. Johannah Shiller was the mother and the other eight shown with an asterisk were her sons and daughters. Johannah Shiller's maiden name was Balcar and her husband was no longer living when they decided to immigrate to America.

The data on the Shiller family was obtained from their historian in Czechoslovakia and Mr. J.J. Stalmach of Smithville. The photograph of the ship MARIA was located in Melbourne, Australia by Albert Blaha of Dime Box on a recent round the world trip. Mr. Blaha will have 8 x 10 photographs of the ship MARIA for those interested.

Information is presently not available on the ships used from Hamburg to Liverpool or from New Orleans to Galveston. It is suspected there are errors in the passenger list and Mr. Blaha will be glad to hear from persons having correct data. Write Mr. Blaha at 9174 Westview, Houston, Texas 77055.

FERTILIZER STUDIES ON VEGETABLES AIRED How well vegetables do when nitrogen fertilizer is applied will

often depend on plant population or density.

Dr. Billy W. Hipp, soil chemist with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, has conducted tests which show that nitrogen fertilizer on Broccoli, for example, can boost yields. However, there also was an increase in incidence of hollow stems, an undesirable quality factor.

Increasing the plant population to 55,000 plants per acre was found to lower hollow stem percentage.

For high yields and quality, Hipp, located at the Texas A&M Research and Extension Center at Weslaco, found that broccoli should be grown at high plant populations and should receive about 150 pounds of nitrogen an acre when grown on most Rio Grande Valley soils.

In another study, nitrogen applioation to tomatoes decreased yields if plant populations were low, but seemed to help yields slightly under high plant density.

Plant response to nitrogen was influenced more by soil variation than by plant population. Leaf nitrogen contentrations, when sampl-

ed at bloom stage, were not well correlated with yields or indigenous soil nitrate-nitrogen.
