FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK .. We travel through life each day and learn something new each and every day. In the last ten years, as your editor, our office has received many letters, telephone calls, had conversations with members, etc. Most of them were complimentary and encouraging and, of course, some were in the way of criticism which is to be expected and understood; with about 50,000 possible readers, no one can possibly please all — that is democracy and everyone's right to their views pertaining to various matters.

Recently, New Year's day, Monday morning, January 1st, 1979, over iced-over streets, your editor drove to the Post Office to pick up the paper and took some color pictures of the ice-laden trees from the freshly fallen sleet. When they were received we felt that they were nothing new because our members and readers in Dallas had a much harder time of it, yet, we published a few of them and received this comment from one of our faithful readers: "Your pictures of the ice storm told more about the situation in West than words could have." This member was from deep South Texas and knows the West community and, therefore, appreciated the views; most certainly they were not news of our members and readers north of West, Texas. We have also received many requests from our members who love to cook for some recipes to be published whenever posSible; we will try to do so in the future when space allows, however, all correspon-

There is a saying that: Everything bad has some good. In that bad freeze we had some time ago, many people took advantage of the broken limbs of trees and cut them up for firewood the

next few days; one dealer reported that he sold more gasoline-powered chain saws in three days than he ha9 in five years! .. If our members and readers have taken notice, during the holidays there was much space in our Vestnik that had to be filled in by material from other sources because letters from our membership were scarce. Most of this material is from TAMU (Texas A&M University) and very useful and many members appreciate the information these articles contain and, all of a sudden, we receive more material of SPJST nature, than we can print. We hope our members understand.

Herewith we print something we feel will be of value at this time of this year: TAX CREDIT ON ENERGY-SAVING HOME IMPROVEMENTS Homeowners who have made energy-saving improvements may claim a tax credit when filing their 1978 income tax returns.

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 provides for such a tax credit on energy-saving home improvements installed since Apr. 19, 1977, points out Ashley Lovell, economist in management with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

An individual may claim a credit of 15 percent of energy-saving expenditures made between Apr. 20, 1977 and Dec. 31, 1978. The maximum credit allowed is $300 and can be claimed on IRS Form 5695.

Lovell lists the following: --Insulation for ceilings, walls, floors, roofs, water heaters and related areas.

--Exterior storm (or thermal) windows or doors.

--Caulking or weather stripping for exterior windows or doors.

--A furnace replacement burner to reduce fuel usage.

--A device to make flue openings (for a heating system) more efficient.

--An electrical or mechanical furnace ignition system to replace a gas pilot light.

--An automatic energy-saving setback thermostat.

--A meter displaying the cost of energy usage.

To be eligible, these improvements must be installed in or on an individual's principal residence, either owned or rented notes Lovell.

The individual must be the first person using the item, and it must have an expected use period of at least three years.

Additional information on tax credits for energy-conscious homeowners is available in IRS publication 903, "Energy Credits for Individuals."

NEWSBR1EFS Doctor and Mrs. George W. O'Neal of 1201 Garden Drive, Mount Pleasant, Texas announce the engagement of their daughter Candye Laverna Gould to Mr. Jerry Garland Bartos, son of Mrs. Ella Bartos and the late V.T. Bartos of 3405 Harvard, Dallas, Texas.

The marriage ceremony will be held this February in the home of the bride's parents.

Miss Gould is a graduate of the University of Texas in Austin where

Mr. Bartos, a Southern Methodist University graduate, is president of Bartos Incorporated. He is past president of the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce and currently serves as chairman of the small business committee of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce. **

Julius Smajstrla, 60, of Victoria passed away January 20th. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Rev. Casey Jarzonbek officiating.

Interment followed in Resurrection Cemetery. Mr. Smajstrla was the brother of District VI Sales Representative Edwin Smajstrla of Victoria. **

Joe F. Rybak, 88, of Houston passed away January 22nd. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday in St. Jerome's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Mikulik officiating.

Interment was held in Woodlawn Cemetery, Houston. Mr. Rybak was the father of active member, Sister Stacie Kocich of Lodge 88.

REPORTS DISTRICT I SALES REPRESENTATIVE'S REPORT FOR DECEMBER, 1978 I want to take this opportunity to say thanks to all the sales representatives of District I for exceeding our sales quota for the 1978 year, by writing 453 members in the amount of $1,169,300 insurance. Your continuous efforts are appreciated by the district, our Society and especially by me. Keep up the good work.

During the month of December, insurance was sold to 45 members in the amount of $151,000. The top sales representative was Brother Willie Gloyna, Lodge 17, selling 1 member with $50,000 insurance.

The insurance sales quota for District I for the year 1979, is again set at $915,000. This means that we will have to continue in our efforts at least as we have in the past, in order to fulfill our_guota for the vear Sales for December, 1978 Sales Rear.

We wrote 73 members for $3,155,500 in insurance sales. This made us a yearly total of 1,027 members for $7,506,000 in Insurance sales.

DISTRICT III SALES REPRESENTATIVE'S REPORT Since the cost of first class mail has gone up to 15 cents the cost of a monthly newsletter is rather expensive. The cost of envelopes, stencils, memeograph paper and memeograph ink runs the cost to about 25 cents each. However, this cost would be bearable if I knew that all sales representatives take the time to read the letters. Personally, I contend that anything worth sending is worth mailing by first class mail; the same token, any first class mail that I receive, I grant the sender the courtesy of reading his message. I do have proof that some of my newsletters were not read so in the future I will resort to using the Vestnik for my monthly reports, etc.

I want to thank you all for whatever you did in 1978 by working, planning, and setting goals. This is the only way we can grow ; without you, the efforts of your sales could not continue and our SPJST could not grow.

As for myself, this was a very hard year because of the loss of my husband last year a year ago (now in January some days get pretty hard) but, as they say, life must go on! Also, trying to take care of my mother who is ill and in and out of the hospitals. I want to say we had a wonderful year with all the problems we had and in the loss of SL Vice Pres. Brother Joe B. Hejny in our insurance dept. and in the loss of four sales representatives in our district. It takes time and practice to replace new sales persons.

Let us all work together for a better year and let's make 1979 an outstanding year in the SPJST. Where can you find that families can all grow and work together for the betterment of our lodges?

Let's all start early and set our goals now and go over them.

James J. Bacak of Lodge No. 40 was top man for November with 60,000 in insurance sold to 2 members and not Albert Lupik of Lodge No. 28 with 25,000 in insurance sold for 2 members. I am sorry about the error due to misdelivered and then delayed mail in my neighborhood during the usual excitement of the approaching holidays. LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 66 held their meeting Sunday, January 21st with President Henry West presiding.

The pledge of allegiance and lodge ((lotto were recited by the members.

All lodge officers were present.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the November meeting minutes. They were approved as read. We did not have a meeting in December.

President West had everyone stand for a silent prayer for our eldest social member, Sister Louis Kapavik and Brother Monroe Kelinski, Sr. May they rest in peace.

In correspondence, Holiday Greetings were read from the Supreme Lodge, the Rudy Sefciks, and a letter from the Supreme Lodge on the 8 percent refund to the lodge.

Thank you cards were read from SL President Nick Morris family, the Ray Moore family and Sister Angeline West.

Bills were paid for English reporter's expenses, the Health and Cheer Committee for get-well, sympathy and congratulation cards sent by Sister Agnes Mazanec and for food sent to the Kapavik family. It was voted to send a $15 donation to the Cancer Society in memory of Brother Kelinski.

Brother Ed Mazanec had Brother George Pauling read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meetings held Monday night, December 4th, 1978 and Monday night, January 8th, 1979. They were very good detailed reports.

Sister Libbie Parma presented the lovely picture of our State Queen Tena Urbanek and the State Duke Jeffery Nors to President West that will be placed with other youth pictures.

Sister Parma reported the youth club officers had been installed and a flag bearer had been selected. After some discussion it was voted to select two flag bearers and have them present the flags to the president at the beginning of each lodge meeting.

Those selected were Larry Brem and James Yates.

Sister Dorothy Gerlich, chairperson of the Resolution Committee, read the resolution for Brother Monroe Kelinski, Sr. Sister Agnes Mazanec gave the Health Committee report. Get-well cards were sent to Brother Monroe Kelinski, Sr., Brother Eugene Gerlich who had an eye surgery recently (it was good to see him at the meeting today), to Sister Angeline West who has been in the hospital, (it was also nice to have Sister Angeline West Sunday at the meeting), and Sister Georgia Pavlicek who had surgery recently. We all wish her a good recovery.

Sympathy cards were sent to the Ray Moore family on the loss of Sister Dorothy's mother, also to the Monroe Kelinski family.

It was reported that Sister Georgia Schroeder is ill. We hope she is doing OK. Sister Mazanec said that they had several thank you notes from those they gave cheer baskets to for Christmas, but they would wait and read them at the next meeting. Sister Mazanec did read a letter from Mrs. Maruska Sweeney, daughter of Sister Richard Stransky and the late Brother Richard Stransky, Sister Sweeney had sent a $50 check to the lodge in

Wednesday, January 31, 1979 memory of her father.

It was voted to purchase a nice clock to be placed in the lodge hall in memory of Brother Richard Stransky.

We all express our heartfelt thanks to Sister Sweeney for this generous gift.

Sister Richard Stransky is in a rest home and we send our best wishes and will remember her in our prayers.

The committees that were to be appointed in January will be appointed at the February meeting.

We hope to see more members present in order to get these committees for 1979.

Door prize winner was Brother George Shilling.

Dear Members, The regular meeting of Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville was held Jan. 14 with 30 members present.

LODGE NO. 155, AUSTIN

Because of extremely cold and icy weather, the Ladies' Circle did not meet Thursday, January 11, 1979. The Circle is planning to hold its monthly meeting February 8th at the National Hall starting at 10:30 if weather permits. Unfortunately, the weather in Fort Worth during the months of January and February is unpredictable, and we can only hope for decent weather Thursday, February 8th.

Sisters who volunteered to serve in January will serve at our February meeting. They are Elizabeth Gregory, Agnes Merlick, Anna Juran, Anna Langer and Albina Farek. Since February 14th is St. Valentine's Day, it is suggested that members who have Valentine decorations on hand bring them to the meeting to make the occasion more festive. Bring only what you may already have; do not buy any Valentine decorations.

We are looking forward to a pleasant Thursday, February 8th, and bring a friend if you wish and all attending our meeting will be cordially welcomed.

Wednesday, January 31, 1979 SPJST LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Members, Sunday, January 21, twenty—two Lodge 13 members and four visitors met for the regular January meeting.

After roll call it was revealed that eleven of our thirteen trustees were present. We were honored to have Bro. and Sis. Silas Smith at this meeting also. Bro. Smith is, as many of you know, a State Field Manager for sales. He spoke to us for a few minutes and brought out some very interesting points and encouraged our lodge to elect some more sales representatives. Reports were given by the treasurer and fin. sec.

The secretary read the minutes from the Dec. meeting; all were accepted.

Bro. Claude Flippin gave a report on the bar income and expenses for 1978.

The treasurer also gave the annual report; both reports showed real good profits. We wish to thank each and everyone of you for helping make these good and profitable reports possible. Without good attendances at our lodge functions these good reports would not be possible. Also, in behalf of the Lodge trustees, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who helped work in 1978 at our dances, our picnics or any other activity that may have been held at the hall. We have many hard and faithful workers and even though the pay is not so great, our appreciation IS the greatest.

Officers for 1979 were installed at our Dec. meeting by Bro. Clint Luksa.

One of our members was not able to accept the trustee position, therefore, Bro. Isidore Rozycki was elected to fill the position.

We accepted two new members, Darlene Iselt and Richard Spacek.

I hope the worst is over, so people would not have to be cooped in, and can get out to do their work and play normally again.

I am proud to see our District II being the top winner in sales of insurance --- 1,027 members for $7,506,000 for 1978. We, at Lodge 74 at Lovelady, want to congratulate Brother Lad Zatopek, District II sales representative of our district, and also Vice President Bernard M. Gebala of

the Supreme Lodge who is doing a great job.

We are really proud of the officers we have in our Lodge No. 74. We are looking forward for a great year in 1979.

Youth Leader Elaine Erwin has a program set up for the youth. Every Thursday are games and skating at 7:30 p.m.; every first Tuesday of the month is meeting time at 7 p.m.; also every third Tuesday of the month a social for the youth at 7 p.m.

There are going to be many improvements which are hopefully

going to be carried out in 1979. With everyone's help we can do a lot. We haVe gained lots of support. The comments that have been stated by many people about our lodge are very good. Mrs. Helen Maurice Roming from Lufkin has joined and stated that there is nothing around Lufkin as nice as our Lodge 74 for nice clean entertainment. We really appreciate such nice compliments.

ACADEMY LODGE NO. 177 MEETING AND INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS JANUARY 10, 1979

We have dances every Saturday night and sometimes we have a dance on Friday night. We have been having good turnouts with good bands playing all types of music.

If you missed the Shoji Tabuchi (the Japanese Fiddler), I'll tell you, you have missed one of the greatest shows ever. We hope to get Shoji back sometime this year. Our lodge would like to thank the fine Jerry Haisler band for playing and being a backup band for Shoji.

Tuesday night is game night at Academy at 7:30 p.m. We have all new equipment, so come on out. Sister Dorothy Massey is doing a fine job as game chairperson.

There is a lot of hard work and we thank all the volunteer workers who came out to help. Terry Tyroch, a youth club member, is here working every Tuesday. Thanks, Terry!

As ticket chairperson, I would like to thank all the volunteers for helping me at the ticket office. Everyone I have asked to work has shown up and worked. Thank you.

LODGE NO. 188, CENTERVILLE Dear Members: We held our monthly meeting January 21st. There was a good group present.

I would like to extend the invitation to all our lodge members to become

involved and give a hand by attending our meetings.

There was only one member sick this month. We want to wish Mr. Stevens a speedy recovery. He and his wife assist us with the kitchen and we do miss them a lot.

We have a few birthda y celebrants

We had a wedding in our lodge too.

It was Scott King and Sandra Tubb.

They were married January 19th. Our best wishes go with you both.

Everyone seemed to enjoy our band, The Combinations. There was an air of enthusiasm and a good time was had by all.

Do remember there is skating every Sunday afternoon from 3 to 4:30 p.m.; bring your skates and join in the fun.

Fraternally, Susan Helmcamp NEWS FROM CORPUS CHRISTI AND ROBSTOWN Dear Readers: The January monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi, was held' Thursday, January 11th. The attendance was smaller than usual for both meetings. Brother Jerry Elmer is to report for Lodge 79.

Before the Sokol meeting began, the officers for 1979 were installed by Helen Pavelka, SPJST District VII president. The roll call showed all officers present at their places.

Secretary Jill Sijansky read the minutes and they were approved as read. She also read a list of prospective members and, of these, five were present to be accepted into membership. They were Jerry L. and Sue Majek, Norma L. Baker, Mollie Chudej and Eloy and Esther Almarez.

Those who have applied for membership must come to a meeting to be accepted as members.

For 1979 the dues are $12 per person and they are due to be paid in January, or soon as possible, afterwards.

President Eugene Lehnert read the names of all who were appointed on committees and all accepted. Other committees, made reports and they were all brief. Treasurer Frank L. Sacky reported that the treasury is in good shape and gave a good report.

Gym Director Jerry Sijansky reported that currently there were 44

VESTNfK active gymnasts participating under 6 instructors. The gymnasts are buying 6 mats costing $200 each and 2 sets of volleyball for which they have borrowed money and will be having more fund-raising projects in the future to pay for all the equipment.

Educational Director Jerry also reported that there will be a meeting in January of all parents of new members to learn and discuss Sokol history and activities and he hopes to have these meetings 2 or 3 times during the year.

For entertainment and the governing board, Mack Munson reported that bookings for the hall have been very good for 1979; all Saturdays are booked and many other days. He said that more members are needed to help clean up and set up for dances and after dances; there is a lot of work being done by a small crew for such a large place. It is really too much for the same ones to do all the work when the hall is used for 3 to 4 nights consecutively. Any volunteers to help would be greatly appreciated; you don't even have to be a member.

President Lehnert said the adding machine (needing repairs) was donated by Don and Ann Pittaway for a garage sale in the past and since it did not sell, Sister Anita Regmund took it home and her son repaired it for free and it is now being used by the hall, especially on game nights. We thank all of them for their generosity.

It was reported that the bar is doing quite well and is open every day from 4 to 10 p.m. Everyone is welcome to stop by. Bartender Frank Dudzienski always has plenty of cold drinks ready to be served, along with a smile.

The game nights have been real good, too. Monday, January 1st, it was very cold but, anyway, there was a good turnout and that night the electricity was cut-off for about half hour. The whole section of Corpus Christi had a power blackout, however, everyone stayed to finish playing after the lights went on again.

Used as temporary lights were candles and flashlights to have some light in the dark hall.

Most of the dances at Lodge 79 and Sokol Hall have been well attended in the past month. Even if it was caining and cold, on New Year's Eve, many people came to enjoy dancing "in" the new year at the beautiful hall with music by Majeks.

By the time this will be printed the dance Saturday, January 27th will be past; for this, music for the first dance in 1979, was by Pavelka's of

Robstown.

February 2nd there will be a country-western dance with music by the popular Sandy's Six Pack, from 8 to 12. February 3rd there will be another dance with music by the Majeks, from 9 p.m. till 1 a.m. For February these two are the only public dances at the hall; the rest are private bookings.

The dance Friday, January 10th, sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society turned out very good. It was held at the Moravian Hall in Corpus Christi and the Majek's orchestra played for the more than 200 persons who came and enjoyed dancing. We had one gentleman from Kansas City, Kansas visiting here who read about it in the Corpus Christi Caller; he came and had a nice time meeting and getting acquainted with the local people. For this dance the tickets were printed in Czech and English in small letters, this was, the first time it has been done here and during the dance, the tickets were given as souvenirs to keep to those attending the dance.

The next meeting for SPJST Lodge 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi will be Thursday, February 8th; the SPJST meeting at 7 p.m., and Sokol meeting at 8 p.m. in the new hall.

Fraternally, Helen Pavelka Sokol Reporter LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Members: The newly-elected Entertainment Committee wishes to report that we are off to a solid start for 1979. We have started booking bands and entertainment for 1980 because this must be done at least a year in advance. We wish to thank those people who have been helpful to the Entertainment Committee. We are trying to do a good job; however, we need everyone's help. When you are called upon to pitch in with your help and services, please don't tell us no unless you have a very good reason.

We need everyone's help around the hall because our hall has a list of continuous activities almost the year round. The work with the picnic this year started a few months ago and is continuing. We hope to, make this year's picnic the biggest and best ever and it also, like everything else, requires everyone pitching in and doing their share. The more people we

We also invite your suggestions about music and entertainment. Just tell one of the committee members and it will be discussed by the entire 'committee. We enjoy working for our lodge and we are going to do the best job that we know how Bands or musical groups wishing to play at Star Hall any time in the future, especially in 1980, should contact either Bro. Nick Morris at AC 817; 985-2378 (Zabcikville Exch.) or Sis. Lillian Kosarek, AC 817;773-4694, both after 5:30 p.m. on week days and any time on Saturdays and Sundays.

14 LODGE NO. 35, ELK Dear Members and Friends: The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 35, Elk was called to order January 14th by President Henry Breitkreutz. Pledge of allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Sondra Dieterich.

President Breitkreutz welcomed our visitors, Tillie Matus, Evelyn Bunkowski and Hubby Frazier; come back again.

Secretary Albert Banik was called on to read the minutes of the December meeting; these were approved. Brother Banik read a thank you note from Mary Norman.

Treasurer Henry Breitkreutz, Jr. was called on to give his report.

Youth Leader Rosemarie Banik thanked all the mothers and fathers for bringing the children to the Christmas practice. Julie Ann Decker and Bordovsky joined the youth club.

Sister Rosemarie then asked all the members who had birthdays in January to come forward and "Happy Birthday" was sung to Brothers Darrin Banik, Ronald and Donald Steinke, Rudolph Zalman, Joe Tepe, Adolph . Beralek, Albert Nivers and Roy Decker and Sisters Laura Decker, Helen Pospisil, Messy Steinke and Frances Fabianke.

Committee reports were given by Ruby PaveIka - kitchen, Eugene Pavelka - entertainment and Henry Breitkreutz, Sr. - refreshment. They thanked everyone who helped them.

New members accepted were Raymond G. Decker, Laura Ann Decker, Julie Ann Decker and Jennifer Ann Decker; we welcome you.

One paid-up member was George Peters.

It was discussed that flowers have gone up so high in price and we have so many members who go to hospitals out of town, so, from now on, we are only going to send cards. If you know of anyone who is sick, call the sick committee - Ruby Pavelka, Helen Dulock or Velma Clemons.

The Entertainment Committee fot 1979 will be Mildred Steinke, Peggy Dieterich and Henry Breitkreutz, Jr. Resolution Committee - Rudolph Zalman, Rosemarie Banik, and Liza Kubitza.

Grievance Committee - Ernest Banik, Ernest Clemons, Eugene Pavelka, Joe Tepe and Dan Pechacek.

Rules & Regulations Committee Vernon Wood, Ernest Banik, Rudolph _Vicha. Albert Banik and Rudolph Zalman.

Door prizes were drawn and winners were, Youth - Donald Steinke, Adult - George Holub.

After the meeting everyone enjoyed playing games and a delicious fried chicken supper was served.

Since this is 1979, let's all come out to the lodge meetings and enjoy each .others fellowship. Don't forget the 11th of February.

Fraternally, Dorothy Banik LODGE NO. 183, MID-CITIES Dear Readers, Sunday, Jan. 21st we held our first monthly meeting. This meeting was held in Grand Prairie in the Reddy Room of Texas Electric Service Co. Nineteen members were present and the meeting began promptly at 2 p.m.

After the pledge of allegiance to the flag, President Bernard Hlavaty called the meeting to order and asked Secretary Maurine Hamilton to read the minutes from the organizational meeting.

Financial Secretary Daniel Roznovsky gave his report.

Treasurer Inez Greenlees also gave her report.

New business began with the election of our youth leader. Diane Schneider was nominated and elected to serve in this office. Appointed to serve on the Sunshine Committee were Inez Greenlees in Grand Prairie, Mary Ann Roznovsky in Irving and Betty Hlavaty in Arlington. Since our funds are very limited at the present time, it was agreed this committee would either visit or use the phone to convey the wishes of the lodge members. Bob Betik will head the committee for the Rules & Regulations and be assisted by Daniel Roznovsky and Bernard Hlavaty.

Barbara Betik will be typing up the names, addresses and phone numbers of our members to be compiled in a directory and will be available to Lodge 183 members. Betty Hlavaty was appointed reporter.

Plans for chartering were briefly discussed and May was the month decided upon for this function. With a little effort from everyone this can be accomplished. Ideas and suggestions were also discussed concerning some fund-raising events in the near future.

These events will be reported as soon as the plans begin to materialize.

The meeting adjourned at 2:50 p.m.

Several of our ladies provided the refreshments which consisted of Polish Pound Cake, Brownies, Chocolate Chips, Oatmeal and M&M

Cookies, served with coffee, hot chocolate, Coke and Dr. Pepper.

These goodies were enjoyed by everyone. Some members watched the big game while others enjoyed a good session. Bob Betik brought his TV. At half-time the meeting room was tidied up and all departed for home.

The meeting in February will be held Sunday, Feb. 18th at 2 p.m. in Grand Prairie at the same location: Reddy Room of TES Co., 400 College St. Please make an effort to attend the meetings, we need you!

Fraternally, Betty Hlavaty Reporter LODGE NO. 87, TEMPLE Dear Members: President Vlasta Jez called the first meeting of the calendar year 1979 to order Friday evening, Jan. 12th at 7:30 p.m.

Jerry Valchar led the lodge in reciting the pledge of allegiance . The lodge members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased member, Brother John Stastny.

President Jez turned the meeting over to Lad Zatopek who, in turn, introduced honored guests from the Supreme Lodge, Mr. and Mrs. Gene McBride and daughter Amy. Brother McBride, who is SPJST Field Manager, installed the following officers for Lodge 87 for the calendar year 1979: President Vlasta Jez, Vice President Annie Plsek, Secretary & Reporter Dorothy Chervenka, Treasurer Joe Plsek, Financial Secretary Ladis Navratil and Flag Bearer Jerry Valchar.

Brother McBride congratulated the officers and spoke to the lodge.

Others elected for the calendar year 1979 are Sidney Kacir, parliamentarian; new 3-year term board of trustees: Frank Machalek, Bill McDonald and Alex Zurovec and Chairman Wallace Bartek, Co-chairman Lewis Jez, Jerry Valchar, George Schiller, Sidney Kacir and Lad Zatopex.

The meeting was then turned over to President Jez. Dorothy Chervenka read the minutes of the previous meeting. They were approved as read.

Various reports were given, correspondence read, and old and new business topics were discussed.

The Social Committee announced that the lodge will serve chili dogs and soft drinks for refreshments at the

Dear Members: The attendance at our lodge meeting last Monday was great. A moment of silence was observed for our departed member, Sister Marie Urban. To the family, we extend sincere sympathy. May she rest in peace.

Reports were given by the entertainment, kitchen, softball, house and auditing committees, hall rental, youth leader, Czech Culture Society, and Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council.

The Sunshine Committee sent a sympathy card to Sister Buelah Horak who lost her mother and Brother Frank Dujka who lost his wife. Our

sympathy is extended to both families.

Get-well wishes were sent to Sister Mildred Patak, and Brothers Louis Prasifka, Allen Baleja, Frank Henzen and our lodge President R. L. Sadecky.

Baby congratulation cards were sent to the George Pruner and Stephen Steiner families.

February 18th at 3 p.m., the lodge meeting initiation of new members and dinner will be held.

If you enjoy spaghetti, meat sauce, salad, garlic bread, drink and pastry, then make your plans to attend. The tickets will be $1.50 for adults, and 75 cents for children, but members joining our lodge during 1978 are guests of ours.

On the subject of new members, we have Leonard Rejcek, Christian Gaiser, Teresa Gaiser, John Gaiser, Jerome Zabojnik and Mary Prachyl; they are the new names joining our lodge or purchasing additional insurance during this month.

Circle these dates on your calendar: February 3--The Vrazels play for dancing on this Saturday. February 1st and 15th--Orchestra practice dates.

February 14--Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council meeting at WFLA on South Central, Dallas. February 23--A western dance with C.B. Boys twanging away on stage. March 18--Lodge No. 84 anniversary, with dinner and program planned. April 27--Another western dance with High Noon providing the music. June 10--Our lodge picnic at the Pokladnik farm in Ennis.

These are the dates which do not appear on our regular schedule, so mark them and enjoy this lodge.

Remember, we have additional parking available, right across from the door entry. The space is being prepared and also look for a sign to be erected shortly; golly , we are so proud to show it to you!

The Seaton Choral Club met for its regular rehearsal with the following members present: Alfred L. There were many of you missing for one reason or another and we sincerely hope all of you will be with us at our next regular rehearsal which will be Tuesday, Feb. 13th; we need you!

After singing those great old songs that we all love so much and many new ones, we had a short business meeting in which we discussed singing at the Southern Villa Nursing Home; we decided to sing on April 5th at 7 p.m. so keep this date in mind. It will also take the place of our regular rehearsal. We then had election of officers for 1979 and after discussing this for a few minutes Leon Sodek made a motion that we re-elect the present officers for another year; the motion was seconded and unanimously passed. Our secretary Sister Lillian Kosarek could not be present and Sister Mary Vasicek took her place as secretary and did a great job; we missed you, Sister Lillian, and we hope that you will be back at our next rehearsal and we also missed all of you who could not attend and we hope you will also be present at our next rehearsal on Tuesday, Feb. 13th.

Singing is good for you it helps you relax and forget all your troubles. I am always careful to set my alarm clock after our rehearsals to be sure I wake up on time; normally I will wake up several times during the night but after rehearsals I sleep like a log, so come out and sing with us.

Singingly yours, Otto Hanus LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear Members and Friends: Our January meeting of Lodge 24 was called to order by Brother Edwin Marek.

The members recited the pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence was observed for our departed members.

We had two guests at our meeting.

They were Brother Henry Vitek and Brother Frank Klinkovsky (who is with the youth). Brother Vitek gave a report later in the meeting, and Brother Klinkovsky had a few things to report to the local youth.

The secretary read the minutes and,

with a few minor changes, they were approved.

Our New Year's Eve dance was a great success despite the weather. We are all thankful for the rain that we have been having; without the rain, we wouldn't do much farming or gardening.

We had a bad day for our domino tournament, however, we will try it again later; football comes first. The lodge will also have a domino and other games social on the last Friday of every month, beginning at 7 p.m.

We will have more information on the square dance later this month.

All of the 1978 chairmen gave their last reports for the year, and, by the reports, we had a good year. I know that the new chairmen will do their best to make 1979 a successful year.

There was no board of trustees meeting Jan. 15th at 7 p.m.

New members who joined our lodge are: Miss Kimberly Schneider and Amber Geistman. We welcome both of the young ladies. Kimberly is now a member of the youth club.

We had a contest among our sales representatives. Norma Andel won first prize for selling the most policies.

She received a check for $200 and E. J. Geistman received a check for $100.

There was a tie for third prize, so the winners will be announced at our next meeting.

There will be another sponsored dance at our lodge Feb. 9th. For more information contact Mrs. Ben Zabcik.

On the sick list we have Greg Hall of Lake Jackson; he has a broken leg and he is the son-in-law of Brother Ben and Sister Regina Zabcik.

There was a drawing for door prizes and the youth winners were: Keith Andel and Beverly Marek; adults--Kenneth Andel and LaVerne Cabla.

The meeting was then adjourned and SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska installed the officers and board members for 1979.

Next meeting will be held Feb. 14th at 7:30 p.m.

Fraternally, Arleen Cabla Reporter LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends: Seems like the weather is the big topic nowadays. We are enjoying a beautiful day, today, with no wind.

We had a sad tragedy happen to one of our members, Sister Sylvia Koch Granado, whose husband Mike perished in a fire, followed by an

VESTNtK explosion in their North Richland Hills home and Sister Sylvia was burned over 50 percent of her body. She is in the Parkland Hospital in Dallas. May we all pray for her recovery. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to all the family. She is the daughter of Sister Stacey Koch and the late Brother Eric Koch. Mike always had a happy greeting for everyone and he will be missed.

We are happy to report that Sisters Maryln Milan and Jeanie Mason are now home from their hospital stays.

Our country-western dance had over 500 in attendance and was enjoyed by all. Jerry Max Lane will be back March 3rd, and we have another Disco dance on February 17th. We extend a special thank you to all who put in long hours and helped so much last weekend.

FEATURES CZECH LANGUAGE COURSE AT BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE The Czech language courses will be offered again at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Czech I will begin February 13th and Czech II will begin February 22nd. Classes will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Each will be a 24-hour course.

We welcome all who have interest in the Czech language, history, music and culture of the land.

Mrs. Subrtova-Smith, the lady from Czechoslovakia, will be the instructor of the Czech language courses.

Registration can be made any day up to and including the first day of class.

Plans are being made to form a Czech language club in the Brazosport area.

"Why I Care About America" I consider myself to be one of the most privileged persons living today.

I am fortunate enough to be able to honestly state this because there is no other country in the entire world which can provide its citizens with the freedoms and opportunities America has. Being born in America, I can proudly boast of these gifts because I am given access to them.

I am proud of my heritage and thankful to those who gave up everything in making it possible.

America was founded over 200 years ago by inspired British descendants who had a thriving need for united independence. Unselfish sacrifices and much effort was put forth by these men in hopes of establishing a nation which would care for her children. Through the process of colonization and a lot of internal struggling, a nation was formed. .An organized system of government that granted social, economical, and

The voices of many co-operating brothers molded their dreams into a reality--the United States of America.

I am fond of my country because it provides me and all of its citizens unlimited opportunities of being someone unique and special. We are all granted the privilege of receiving a formal education, and then choosing our own direction in which to pursue life. The United States Constitution, the supreme law of this land, also gives all Americans the protected rights of "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." This is probably the most meaningful characteristic of my country to me. I am very grateful to be able to be a part of a free democracy.

America is the fourth largest country in the world in respect to area and population. But in my opinion it is the most opportune and certainly the most influential. The United States is powerfully blessed by being both mentally and physically strong. By learning to function as a family, and by putting full trust in one belief, we have created an internally strong America. We are also physically advanced in the fields of political foreign policy and strategic defense.

Our country has also proven itself to be a vital peacemaker in the involvement with other countries. All of these valuable characteristics which we possess, are reasons for me to care even more about America.

Another reason why I care about my country is because people of the United States are willing to respect and give generously toward one another without envy or selfishness.

An old wise man once said that whenever a group of concerned people unite to form a union, there is no other earthly force which can bend or break that bond. This is what I think America is best compared to.

I, as a young American, have a bright and hopeful future to look forward to. This is true because I have decided to complete my schooling with a college education. I am then free to work at any place I may choose and live a life according to my own values and ideas.

America is truly the land of equality, freedom, and inspiration. I am proud to say that I was born in America and hope to remain here for the rest of my life. Should the time arise, I would even fight and die for my country. I can honestly say that I care about America. Why? Because America cares about me!

DIANE MARIE GAJDICA SELECTED AT BAYLOR Diane Gajdica was among 50 Baylor University students selected to the 1978-79 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

She was chosen as a campus leader, and nominated for her academic achievement, community service and leadership in extracurricular activities and future potential.

Diane, who is a member of Lodge No. 130, Dallas, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Laddie Gajdica of Plano joins an elite group of students selected from more than 1,000 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign nations.

DAN KUBIAK State Rep. Dan Kubiak of Rockdale filed a bill Wednesday aimed at determining the amount of property in Texas which is owned by foreign

governments and investors.

Known as the "Texas Foreign Investment Disclosure Act," House Bill 432 will require all foreign property owners to register the details of their ownership with the Texas Secretary of State and the county clerk of each county in which their property lies.

"No one, not the governor, the Secretary of State, or any other state official, officially knows just how much acreage in Texas is owned by foreign investors," Kubiak said.

"House Bill 432 will get a definite handle on the amount of foreign investment taking place in Texas today. We want to find out just how much land is being removed from Texas ownership."

The bill will require the owners to file a report within ninety days of acquisition or transfer of Texas land and list the owners, their addresses, the legal description and amount of acreage, the purchase price, the purposes fora which the land will be used and any other information which the Secretary of State may require by rule.

A party which violates the foreign investment disclosure act may be fined $10,000 for each violation.

"An Austin newspaper reported Wednesday that a foreign prince bought approximately ninety-thousand acres in Texas last year, including what it termed some of the best soil in the state for crops," Kubiak said.

"We also know that investors from the Arabian countries, Germany and Japan have also bought significant amounts of property in Texas."

Kubiak said there is a valid fear both in Texas and Washington, D.C. that more land in this country will be bought in the next few years.

"With the information we will receive after the passage of this act, we may want to petition the federal government at some time in the future to prohibit or limit foreign ownership in the United States as many other countries prohibit American ownership of property in their countries."

The new year is well on its way and soon it will be spring and many youth activities will begin. In fact this is to let everyone in District II know that we are going to have our annual District II skating party February 18th at Skate Haven in Temple just north of the high school, from 5 to 7 p.m. and, as usual, many door prizes will be given. We want everyone to put this date down on your calendar so you can be sure not to forget it. You will be allowed to bring a visitor to this activity. We again remind you to ask your visitor to join your lodge and youth club. Let's all plan to come to this skating party and let's have the biggest one we ever had. All of the youth members can meet their friends from the other lodges in the district.

The District II youth leaders and assistants seminar will be held much earlier this year. This is due to the fact that we have so many new youth leaders in our district. Then, on March 11th through March 16th, the Longhorn Recreating Lab (LRL) will be held. This will be at the new 4-H Club Center in Brownwood.

This lab is not only an SPJST project but includes many leaders from 4-H Clubs and also county agents and people from state hospitals, rest homes and many other places that sponsor recreational activities. The reason for this lab is for recreational leaders to exchange ideas in the field of recreation. The SPJST is again paying the tuition for The youth leaders and the DYCs, so all you have to do is to devote your time to get to attend this great lab. If any of you would like more information about this lab, please contact SYD Dorothy Massey, The SPJST will also sponsor a youth leaders' and assistants' seminar. This is only a weekend and you are allowed to bring your spouse to attend with you. This will be held March 31st and April 1st at Herrington's Camp, near Austin. This weekend includes all youth leaders and assistants from the entire state, so you can get to meet many leaders from other lodges in the state and be able to learn more about our youth program and what other clubs are doing.

Mark your calendar for March 25th which will be the District II spring meeting at Lodge 18 in Elgin. The details of this meeting have not yet been been completed; however, more information on this meeting at a later date.

I would like to remind all of the youth to start planning your crafts and talents, so if you have any spare time from your school activities you can start making your crafts. The YAD crafts, talent and royalty will be held July 8th. This seems a long way off but it is not.

The youth members who are interested in attending camp should be sure they are attending their youth club meetings so they would be eligible to attend camp this year. The dates for this are not yet final but will be published as soon as available.

Wednesday, January 31, 1979 DISTRICT IV YOUTH COUNSELOR

There are two activities that will be coming up soon for District IV. First, the District IV training class for all the youth leaders and their assistants on March 5th at 9:30 a.m., at the home of Mary Haisler. This is an important meeting because all of the rule changes and activities are planned and discussed, so please be present and voice your opinion.

Second, is the District IV meeting on April 22nd. The youth will have the same contests as in the previous years. We had a good turnout last year, so let's do it again.

January came in with a blast and has continued to be bad. A lot of cotton is still in the fields and the weather forecast said more snow and ice for this week.

Dear Readers: The youth club meeting was held January 12th at 8 p.m. with a good attendance. We also had a visitor, Sister Maxine Sefcik. Come back and visit with us again.

Editor Rudy Sefcik installed the Lodge 6 officers for the coming year.

The Christmas party including the program was a great success; everyone did a fine job. I also want to thank each of you for the nice gifts.

All of us enjoyed the New Year's Eve party by lamplight. We are still working on Christmas card items.

January 26th was the date set for our Beseda practice.

The youth club planned to go to the SPJST Museum on January 28th at 1:30 p.m. from my home. All the lodge members were also invited to go with us.

I would like for all the youth club members to attend the meetings every month and help with bake sales and any other work that the youth club does.

We will be working on Valentine items and are still working on Christmas card items.

Birthday celebrant for January is David Dobecka. Shirley Dobecka brought the cake. Thank you, Shirley.

She will also bring a cake for February.

Dear Youth Leaders and Youth of District II: I am not very good at writing letters but I want to say that it has been a great pleasure working with all of you.

I have met a great number of youth and leaders and made many friends.

The years that I had the opportunity to serve as youth leader in our lodge I have enjoyed very much. I have always thought of the young people as my kids while I have seen them grow up and start families of their own; however, they are still my kids. I want to say 'thank you' to all of the youth leaders for the memories I have while working with each of you; especially, to Bro. Frankie Klinkovsky and SYD Dorothy Massey; without you I would not have been able to do my job. We have traveled many miles together with the youth but we enjoyed them all; at times I think that I had more fun than the youth, especially at camp and the cookouts.

A special 'thank you' goes to Vallie Haisler who was my assistant for so many years, and to Helen Spanhel whenever we planned a social and needed help, Helen would not wait for someone to ask her. She was the first one to say I will take the car and help you. Once again thank you, Helen!

The year of 1978 brought me another good friend, Betty Malovets. She was the assistant and we had our share of good times with the youth. Once again thank you for all your good help. Our new youth leader is Mary Moudy, but I will always see you at the district meetings, YAD and State YAD, if

possible.

I know that I said thank you a number of times in this letter but all of you have deserved it, especially to one of the mothers who gave me a recipe box for Christmas with a note inside that meant very, much to me.

I want to wish all of you a happy and prosperous 1979, and I will see each of you at the next meeting.

Our next big date to remember will be Feb. 4th which will be Anniversary Day of our Lodge 88. Please plan to attend; your help will be needed for the projects we have planned for this day. Feb. 8th we will have a youth club bake sale.

Sister Agnes Lesak sell life insurance, was an active member of the Choral Club, and enjoyed working with the Entertainment Committee.

Brother Lesak was a part-time employee for Northwest Drug Store for 38 years.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Lesak; sons, Raymond, Eugene, David and Lin; daughter, Linda and six grandchildren.

Brother Kropp was born February 12th, 1903 in Granger. He was a member of the Granger Brethren Church and of the SPJST Lodge No. 29, Taylor. He had lived in the Bartlett community for the past 26 years and had recently retired from farming.

Survivors include his wife, Velma Kropp of Bartlett; three sisters, Mrs. Angeline Wentrcek and Mrs. Julia Malish, both of Granger and Mrs. Cecelia Jozwiak of Taylor; two brothers, Tom Kropp of Crockett and Ed Kropp of Granger.

Rudolph F. Lesak IN MEMORIAM Brother Lesak died September 27, 1978 at his home in Houston. He was a resident of Houston for 40 years.

He was born November 26, 1909 in Gonzales, Texas.

A rosary, led by her son, Robert was held Friday, Dec. 15 at Restland Memorial Chapel in Dallas. Brother Sid Pokladnik, a longtime friend of our family, delivered a brief eulogy preceding the rosary service. A funeral mass said by the Rev. William Botik was held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Mother left behind our daddy, Jerry Urban; 2 daughters, Dorothy Reznik of Dallas and Jerry Ann Muehlstein of Grapevine; one son, Robert; plus 10 grandchildren who love and miss her very much. Other survivors are 2 brothers, Johnny Mach of Dallas and Frank Mach of Towakoni and 2 sisters, Anna Parks of Dallas and Wilma Smith of Austin; also many nieces and nephews whom were very special to her.

Mother's life was a very simple one yet she touched so many persons' lives by her kindness and understanding. She was always looking for a way to help some one along life's way. She was a babysitter for many years and every child who came into her home was loved and cared for as her own.

Many of those children, now grown and married themselves, have a special place in their hearts for our mother. emptiness in our lives now and we miss mother deeply, but we have so many wonderful memories of her and our family life together; she will always live on in our hearts.

Our daddy and the children would like to thank everyone for the kindnesses shown to our family during this very sad time.

THE STORY OF THE CZECH NATIONAL SONG "KDE DOMOV MUJ" ("WHERE IS MY HOME?")

The night was cold and a heavy fog lay over the city of Prague.

In the second floor of one of the old town houses at light was burning in a simple furnished room. In this room a young woman rested in heavy sleep. Her beautiful hair lay loose around her head and her hands rested on her breast, clasped together as in prayer.

At her bedside sat a young man with a friendly face and kindly eyes, watching his wife, who was critically ill and had just passed the crisis but was still in a serious

condition. Therefore, with sorrow he looked upon her pale cheeks, her heavy breathing.

In his hands he held a piece of paper on which was written the beautiful words of the Czech National Song: "Where Is My Home?"

The hand writing was that of Josef Kajetan Tyl. He had asked his friend Frantisek Skroupa to write the music to the poem: "Where Is My Home?" He wanted to use it in his new play "Pldlovacka."

Skroupa sat silently with his sick wife, once in a while humming quitely a few bars and making a few notes. Long after midnight sleep finally overcame him and he fell into a silent slumber.

When daylight came and the sun shone brightly through the window, he was again at the bedside of his loving wife.

After a while she opened her eyes and greeted him with a smile.

Whispering a few loving words to her, he stepped to the piano and quietly sang for her Tyl's inspiring words, his own sweet melody of our Czech National Song: "Kde Domov Muj?" — "Where Is My Home?"

His wife listened, her heart and soul full of happiness, with tears in her eyes, tears of joy, a new life began to flow through her veins, a life of wonderful future, humming the words and melody of "Where Is My Home?"

And so was born, December 20, 1834 our national song, known the world over where Czech people live.

A song that will live forever.
