FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Your editor wishes to inform our members and readers that the publisher of our Vestnik, Mr. Linn Pescaia, has changed the schedule of completing the final makeup of our paper. We used to make the final proofs Saturday mornings and, as of this issue, it will be finalized by 5 p.m., Friday, therefore, now and then, we used to receive an urgent item Saturday or Sunday or a telephone call and we would try to place such into the paper; that will be almost impossible to do now and so please take note of this and get your copy in early. Remember that the mail also is delayed at sometimes so keep this in mind also. For the last ten years we have "leaned over backward" to aid all of our members and will continue to do so whenever possible. The type will also be a little different, possibly.

We see by the two letters from Lodge No. 172, Pasadena, that the officers and members of that lodge are forbidding any other members to write to our Vestnik with the exception of a few authorized to do so.

Here let us take a good look at our U.S. Constitution, our By-laws and the question of Freedom of the Press.

Probably a lodge membership can deny a member the right to write to the Vestnik as an official representative of that lodge, however, I doubt we can deny any member the right to write in our Vestnik. We will let our Legal Adviser Lesikar rule on that; however, this editor feels that such action is contrary to our fraternalistic spirit.

Over two weeks have passed since we Americans welcomed in Infant 1979. And almost everyone has gotton home from the party by now!

The first day of the New Year was also a time for parades decked in beautiful flowers, solemn forecasts for the year ahead and several quick dips in frigid waters.

While many SPJST members watched their favorite highlights of the year on television, one million persons in Pasadena, California, watched the annual Tournament of Roses Parade preceding the Rose Bowl game.

An outstanding array of floats with live flowers proceeded in the parade.

Much work goes into the building and assembling the floats and it is estimated the preparation of them involves 50,000 man hours of work..

Many school bands also participated in the various parades including the one in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

All these bands are made up of fine young people and we feel that any music instructor tries to provide the young people with the opportunity to achieve musically and to gain an above-average musical education and, equally important, if no more so, the band provides the opportunity for young men and women to learn to work together as one strictly organized and well-disciplined group.

The personal sacrifices are enormous if one is to really conform to the rehearsal and performance schedule of any outstanding band, but the rewards are also great. The fundamental objective of any band's program is to demonstrate what a satisfying level of accomplishment can be achieved, by all kinds of people with every _possible himan characteristic, through common dedication and understanding.

Pride is also a key factor in the success of any band. Pride in appearance, pride in accomplishment and the willingness to place teamwork ahead of personal glory, are the essential band ingredients which any music instructor surely must be grateful for.

What's the reward? It's substantial it's honor and prestige. They gain the satisfaction of having attained a rare distinction; a job well done; going to interesting places and meeting notable people. We salute the boys and

A MESSAGE TO THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE SPJST During the annual 1978' audit (January 8, 1979) of our Society, SPJST, Temple, Texas, the directors are pleased to report progress in the management of our home office and related business operations.

Our Society made substantial gains in the past twelve months.

We are pleased to show the 1978 increase in assets from $1,137,832.79 in 1977 to $1,600,867.71 in 1978 or an increase of $463,034.92 in assets. The total expense of operations in 1978 decreased by $257,607.80.

The Society's continuous progress is indicative of its prosperous conditions as reflected in the growth of insurance sales, membership, and its phenomenal increase in assets.

This increase in membership and total insurance sold can only be attributed to the untiring efforts of all sales persons and the entire insurance underwriting department.

We, the directors, are assuring the membership that the operation and management of our Society is continually being conducted in a business manner and in keeping with the best interest of the entire membership. All meetings are held in a fraternal spirit and with the cooperation of all members of the Supreme Lodge.

Your directors made a total of 107 loan appraisals in 1978, totaling over 31/2 million dollars. Most appraisals required two directors and many required that three directors participate in the appraisal of loans exceeding $50,000.00.

This report shows highlights of the Society's operation and progress during the year 1978. Please review the following financial statement as audited by the directors for your information.

Your efforts have been and will be recognized because we do realize that you are a very important part of making the SPJST the wonderful organization that it is today.

In addition to the commissions you receive for enrolling members into our Society, it is felt , that an equitable incentive program be established to reward all sales representatives for their efforts. After an extensive study was completed by the Insurance Department it was presented to your district sales representatives where more ideas were incorporated into the new incentive system. It was then presented at the Supreme Lodge meeting in October and passed unanimously.

All past incentive programs will cease at the end of 1978. Only those incentive programs listed on attachment No 1 will be in effect in 1979.

The big difference in the new program is that incentive awards will be based on annualized premiums (certificates in force) and the incentives will commence at two hundred dollars ($200) of annualized premiums. This will allow all of our sales representatives to obtain some type of a bonus for their efforts, that

4 they deserve. At the same time this system will not effect our "big producers" as this program rewards you on an increment basis.

I am very proud, as I know you are, to be associated with the SPJST. Together we can make our Society the envy of all others.

After reviewing the rules and regulations for 1979, if you find that some facet is not clear to you, please contact the Insurance Department for clarification.

I'm sure that this new incentive program will not only be profitable for you, but fun for the entire family. Now you'll have a "Wish Book" (catalogue) to look at to give the added push to obtain the items your family wants. All it takes from you is "initiative".

The entire Insurance Department is here to assist you in your work. Let's all go forward with a positive attitude.

Therefore, it would be wise for the sales representative to let his or her gift certificates accumulate at the home office and receive them all at one time, but, as stated previously, this is not necessary. c. The distributor for our gifts will be the H.J. Wilson Co. Inc. of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Wilson has stores throughout Texas, however, if a Wilson store is not convenient to you, you may use their mail order system (postage free to you). Your district sales representative will give you a catalogue. Prices in the catalogues are subject to change. d. If you receive a gift certificate for twenty-five dollars ($25.00 and desire a gift from Wilson's costing thirty dollars ($30.00 you may pay the difference in cash for that item. If you buy an item which is less than your gift certificate, a cash balance will be given to you, up to five dollars ($5.00).

If the balance is over five dollars ($5.00) then a gift certificate for that amount will be issued you by Wilson's. e. Be sure to bring proper identification to Wilson's when purchasing with your gift certificate as this is the same as a check.

3. The allowance for a sales representatives social to be I of annualized district premiums, but not less than $25.00.

4 A prospective sales representative will fill out an application for the position and if appointed, the local lodge president or secretary is to sign

it and mail it to the Supreme Lodge Vice President. These application forms are to be furnished to local lodges and district sales representatives.

5. When a new sales representative has been approved, the district sales representative will contact and instruct the newly appointed sales representative for at least two hours at two different intervals as soon as possible and then accompany them on their first two interviews. Further instructions in district sales representatives contract.

6. All sales representatives shall attend as many meetings of their respective lodges and districts as possible and shall participate in their lodge activities.

7. At any time the local sales representative will have a question on commission or renewal commission, he or she is to contact the Insurance Department at the Supreme Lodge office for explanation.

8. Supreme Lodge will make favors or gifts available to sales representatives at 50 cost basis. (pens, tie clasps, brooches, etc.)

9. Commission - Renewals of 5 as follows: $25,000.00 - 3 years; $50,000.00 4 years; $75,000.00 - 5 years; $100,000.00 - 6 years. to. Provide all sales representatives revised commission schedules to include commission on supplements and riders.

LODGENO. 172, PASADENA

Dear Members and Friends: Our annual meeting was held as scheduled on Dec. 13th. The attendance was good and all reports were very good.

Final details were taken care of for our 9th anniversary and Christmas party combined. Also, our lodge voted to give the San Jacinto Czech Club $200 to help pay for some of the things needed to better carry on the teaching of Czech at San Jacinto College. Those of you who are still undecided about taking a course in the Czech language, please don't put it off. You will enjoy it; you will be glad you came and you will wonder why you put it off for so long. It is still time to register at San Jacinto College. The class meets on Monday night. You may call the college for details.

Our hall caretaker, Ray Garcia, is on the sick list again. I hope he will soon be back with us. It was moved and seconded to give Ray Garcia $300 to help him pay his hospital bills. Ray is always doing things for us and we wanted to do something for him.

The holiday season is over and we are starting off the new year. The old year has been a good year for our lodge. We could not have accomplished what we did without everyone's help and cooperation. Thank you everyone for your part in the success of the lodge. We are looking forward for 1979 to be even better.

Our new officers and the board of trustees were installed at the January meeting. They are: President, Victor Peter; 1st vice president, Benard Orsak ; 2nd vice president, Edna Voldan; secretary, Vlasta Machann: financial-secretary, Lillia Mae Peter.

Our treasurer will be announced later.

Board of Trustees are: Doyle Martin, Clifford Hubbard, Joe Machann and Monice Green.

District V Youth Counselor Richard Wahlberg conducted the installation of officers. Thank you, Mr. Wahlberg, we enjoyed having you at our meeting; it was a bad night to be anywhere. Brother Peter said that the second Wednesday in January every year seems to be one of the worst days of the year to have installation, it either rains, freezes or both.

Correspondence to the Vestnik was discussed at the meeting. The second vice president is the news reporter.

The treasurer reports on the monthly meetings. They are aware and instructed as to what to say and what not to say into the Vestnik. There are times when some people, for various reasons, do not want their names put

in; they become unhappy about it and sometimes upset. A motion was made, seconded and passed that the correspondence to the Vestnik he done only by the authorized persons, who are the second vice president, the secretary and the president.

Send all your news items to the second vice president who is Edna Voldan.

This will he a very busy year for us.

We are excited and are looking forward to bigger and better activities for our lodge.

LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA Dear Members: The new year is flowing right on at a rapid pace at times I think we should all take a few minutes each day, just relax and, before we know it, this will become a very beneficial habit. We generally have a habit of believing, "I don't have any time for myself." Now, is the time to start taking that time while it is available.

We had a good turnout for our monthly meeting in spite of the cold and rain. The membership made and seconded the motion that only the recording secretary, second vice president, reporter and the president, or anyone authorized by the president could write to the Vestnik. The president asked me to put this in my article that I am writing now. Anyone who has any news should call me or send it to me or if you have any pictures that could be sent to the Vestnik, just send them to me and I will carry on from there. The recording secretary writes about the meetings and the second vice president, reporter writes the rest of the news for the lodge.

It was very nice for our District V Youth Counselor Richard Wahlberg to install our officers for 1979.

I wish to thank Vlasta Machann and Mary Green on behalf of the lodge for the many hours spent on decorating our lodge. It's so nice for our members to do things for the lodge. I have missed not being able to be at the lodge and helping out the past months, but I'm looking forward to the time when I can. It's very hard to have to go slow when you have been able to get up and go on with things.

I spent the night out in the boondocks and I heard something at my son's door and when I opened the door, there was the little news-bee so cold, he couldn't even buzz until I gave him a spot of tea. (My son doesn't really live in the boondocks, but it's so far out, that's what I call it.) I heard the Julius Tupa dance was better than ever. The Hugo's son-in-law, Bill Ashby celebrated his birthday and also he and Jammie celebrated their anniversary. The Hausters celebrated their 49th anniversary and Erna and Roy Ethileman their 37th. Congratulations!

The little news bee put a bug in my ear, said that Ann Bingham was just great on the mike Saturday night. Ann is just a natural when it comes to entertaining guests.

Raymond, our bartender, has been in the hospital. I hope you are out by now, Ray. If anyone else is ill, hurry and get well.

Brother Morris, I think your son, Stephen. took a ver y good picture of You. 1 know everyone enjoyed the picture and, as you stated, he caught you in the act.

The weekend of March 10th and 11th will be a fun and educational weekend. First, we have the officers workshop March 10th in Hallettsville at the High School and back for our dance at Lodge 172 with the music of Donnie Vavra and then on to Needville March 11th for our District V meeting.

Everyone should attend our district meetings because that is where we gain a lot of information.

Hope to see all of you January 27th for the Gold Banners' dance and our Valentine's dance is just around the corner.

This time Editor Sefcik has informed us about the letter of Sister Anita Kubicek of Lodge No. 184, Moulton, where she quotes District VI Director Matt Vanek as saying in his talk at the lodge: "that the members never read it (the Vestnik)".

I started to read the Vestnik when it was established in 1916 at Fayetteville, Texas. The first editor was Brother Josef Tapal. To my

It was the most read fraternal newspaper in Texas and it is that way up to these days. Certainly there are some members who do not read the Vestnik.

They probably are in the category

where their policy is paidup and or they not interested in the fraternalism. In fact, there are members who must be continuously notified to pay their premiums.

As I stated, I have been reading the Vestnik since 1916 when it was established in Fayetteville. It was and

VASTNIK organizing the band of his children financially, but that he is not playing and does not play an instrument.

(Photo by Helen Pavelka). is one of the largest fraternal publications in Texas and, in the present days, in English and Czech languages; also, at the low price for non-members of $5 per year. It serves the membership, the local lodges, the youth clubs, the districts and Supreme Lodge in Temple WELL! With the all-time rapid growth it probably will have to be enlarged at least four (4) pages to take care of the material that comes to the "Editor's Desk." The cost paid out for the Vestnik (SPJST HERALD) is one of the best investments, we the SPJST Society, have. Without this function we never would have been where we are now.

Our younger generation, for the pleasure of it, have a habit to be owners of a camera and sometimes use it in the fraternal or social meetings. I wrote, once before, that a picture sometimes can say more than words.

The accompanying picture was snapped by Sister Helen Pavelka from Robstown who attended the dedication celebration of our new home at the SPJST Lodge 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi on August 6th, 1978; that day, after the celebration, I had the pleasure to meet Brother Matt Vanek from Victoria, who is the SPJST' director of District VI. The Vanek's Polka Band played the same day with another band of Bob Vel Goldstein for a battle dance, from 4 to 10 p.m.

Since then we have met again, in our new hall when the SPJST local lodge had a picnic. At this time, I had the honor to meet his friendly wife; we were sitting at the same table together and discussed the problems that has accumulated in our memory.

LODGE NO. 79, CORPUS CHRISTI The meeting of Lodge 79 was held December llth, with 19 members present. Sister Helen Pavelka, District VII president, installed the officers.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Brother Felix Pavlas and Brother Fred Veit, who passed away in December.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The work in operation of our new lodge facilities was discussed;are needed volunteers to help clean up the building every Saturday and Sunday. Next weekend, why not drop around and help a couple of hours?

Our New Year's Eve dance with the Leo Majek Orchestra was a big success. At this dance, our honorary president, Brother John Stasa, cele brated his 88th birthday: he had his dancing shoes on and really danced a lot.

Our new lodge building is open daily from 4 to 10 p.m. If you are down our way, stop by and our manager, Brother Frank Dudzienski, will be glad to show you around.

As the new reporter for our lodge, I want Brother Rudy to bear with me this coming year.

Our next meeting will be held February 12th at 7 p.m.

LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, Jan. 14th at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m., with President Frank Zabransky presiding. The pledge to the flag was led by Kim Drozd and Laurie Chudej.

Gaye Galetka read a resolution of sympathy for our departed Brother Hilmer A. Fertsch.

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the November and December meetings followed by correspondence.

The election of a youth leader was discussed and postponed to the next

meeting.

The following committees were then named. Resolution: Gaye Galetka, Gaynell Chudej, Alfonse Holy. Audit: Charles Holy, Marlyn Sevcik, August Holub. Entertainment: Hermina Vasek, Victoria Zak. Treasurer Gaye Galetka gave her report.

Refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned. A delicious lunch followed.

January birthdays honored were Melissa Holy, Tommy Holy and Vernon Zak. The birthday cake was . won by Melissa Holy.

Adult door prize was won by Annie Marie Zabransky and Laurie Chudej, the youth door prize.

Fraternally, Patsy Zabransky Reporter LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last lodge meeting was held Sunday, Jan. 7th at 2 p.m. with lodge president, Brother Alfred Klusacek convening the meeting.

Flag Bearers Gene Skrabanek and David Pechal led the assembly in the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

Brother Klusacek announced that Sister Delores Skrabanek wishes to be the Lodge 47 youth leader. After asking for nominations three times, Sister Skrabanek was elected the youth leader by acclamation. Good luck, Sister Delores!

Then the retiring lodge officers escorted the newly-elected officers to the front for the installation conducted

by SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr. He gave an inspirational and impressive talk to the membership for continued cooperation with the lodge officers. Thanks, Brother Jerry for serving as the installing officer. President Jerry Pechal conducted the remainder of the meeting.

Lodge Secretary Sister Ginger Klusacek read the roll call of officers and sales representatives. She also read the correspondence which included the receipt of the' mortuary dues to the SL; a letter concerning the Christmas Seals Drive and a donation of $25 was sent to the American Lung Association; a thank-you note from Brother Bill and Sister Ruth Junek for the fruit and candy packages given them at Christmas; a thank-you from the family of Brother Rudy Tyroch, deceased member, for the memorials

The new members accepted for membership were Frank Ross Gregory, George Allen Franz, Blain Clayton Scott, London Nicole Dorsey, Joe Frank Marinik, Frank Klinkovsky III, and Joe Paul Klinkovsky. A warm welcome to all of the new members and try to come to the lodge meetings.

Sister Stacie Hejny, Brother Donald Joe Hejny and Sister Margaret Hejny were granted transfers to Lodge No. 135, Ennis. We are sorry to lose the Hejnys but understand because of their move to the Ennis area.

Those reported on the sick list were Brothers Robert Haisler, Henry Haisler, Robert Krcha and Frank Sefcik. Since the meeting we learned that Sister Emilie Hejl Junek of Rosenberg is critically ill. Our prayers are that you all will recover satisfactorily very soon. You are being missed at home. Czech Reporter Sister Annie Jakubec was ill at home the day of the meeting.

President Jerry Pechal called on the officers and chairmen for their monthly reports. Yearly reports are to be given in the next meeting because the lengthy rules and regulations were to be read and acted upon. The audit committee chairman, Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr., gave the quarterly

report. Brother Alfred and Siste-r Martha Klusacek thanked everyone who helped tnem in me two years of Brother Alfred's presidency and entertainment chairman's duties.

Thanks to the Klusaceks for all of their past devotion to lodge activities Visitors recognized were Ann Balusek, Marylou Skrabanek and George Pavelka. Come, again!

Board minutes were read by Lillian Kosarek and the only action needed on their recommendations was the increase in price on soft drinks.

The appointments by president and vice president on the Resolution Committee were Sisters Adeline Kohutek, Lillian Kosarek and Dorothy Pechal. Maintenance Committeemembers are Brothers Woodrow Marek, Elmer Skrabanek and Charlie Marek and a vacancy on the Planning and Improvement Committee was filled by Brother Jerry Trampota. An Investigating Committee was chosen and the members serving are Brothers Frank Spanhel, Floyd Stuteville and Henry Mares.

Other unfinished business was the election of the bar chairman. Brother Alfred L. Klusacek had volunteered and Charlie Marek was nominated so an election followed with Alfred Klusacek receiving 34 votes and Charlie Marek 24. Brother Jerry and Sister Annie Chupik were re-elected the cleaning chairmen for 1979.

Serving on this committee are Nick A. Morris, entertainment chairman, Marie Pavelka, Charlie Marek, Emilie. Stuteville, Ruby L. Bolton, Lillian Kosarek and Mary Vasicek.

Brother L. J. and Sister Vlasta Motl have served as the ticket chairpersons for 12 years, with their only absence being when they were both hospitalized due to critical injuries from an auto accident. Thanks to you both from the past presidents you worked for, and from the entire membership for a job WELL DONE! Youth Leader Sister Delores Skrabanek gave her report and stated that her assistants will be Sisters Genie Tepera and Judy Motl. A "sock hop" is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 26th. Families of the youth club members are to bring the refreshments, either cake or sandwiches.

Brother Henry Marts, chairman of the Planning Committee, gave a report that they recommend either repairing the present storage building or replacing it with a smaller steel building but not a 90 by 130 feet pavilion style structure, as the Picnic Committee proposed.

Secretary Sister Ginger Klusacek read the names of recipients of premium refund checks.

Door prize winners were Brother Henry Mares and Sister Lillie Cervenka.

Fraternally, Dorothy Pechal Reporter LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON These few weeks of severe cold weather are getting us down; Sunday the sky cleared and it turned out to be a beautiful day, but OH! cold. Today, Monday, again the sky is clear as a bell but still cold. We, here in Texas especially down south, shiver with every little norther, but this time we did get a fill of it. Most of us stayed in heated surroundings of our home and did not dare venture out unless necessary.

All the scheduled dances at Lodge 88 were held and the committees were in their places regardless of the weather.

It is amazing how many dance-loving people venture out regardless of the weather, and the scheduled dances were surprisingly fairly attended; thanks to all who were so brave to weather the wet and freezing wind we experienced for the past weeks. Even at that we are very fortunate to have lights and heat in our homes of which a lot of people were deprived of for days and some for weeks. I, for one, stayed in seclusion.

For a couple of weeks we missed Mrs. Magdelena Buckner in our group of players at the Thursday night social. At first we were afraid she took sick, but her daughter Alma Crosswell assured us she was well but afraid to venture out in this horrible weather.

Magdelena is a beautiful lovely lady and celebrated her 82nd birthday December 31st. We all wish her a belated birthday and hope she will be with us in her regular place next social night.

In the Blue Room I met a couple and both are members of Lodge No. 88 for several years: Calvert and Anna Lewis. Calvert travels quite a bit and is out of town for weeks and sometimes for months and that is the reason they have not been, coming to dances as they have in the past.

Calvert is in charge of installing fixtures in large establishments in different shopping centers. Sister Donna Schnell, daughter of Richard and Helen Schnell and granddaughter of the late Steve Valcik and Helen Valcik, presented her piano recital Sunday, January 14th in the music room of the Kinkaid School to an appreciative audience to enjoy a rich program.

Announcements of wedding anniversaries were made at the monthly January lodge meeting. Harry and Lillian Finn are married 48 years and Linn and Lynn Lesak celebrated their 3rd year. Best wishes were extended to the two happy couples and a long list of birthday celebrants was read and a song rang out for them from the assembly. Snacks and refreshments were enjoyed by all after the meeting.

Dear Members and Friends: We had The Bandits to entertain our dancing fans. We had a smaller crowd than we usually have due to the extreme cold weather; everybody appeared to have a good time and we had several people attend from Trinity, Groveton, and Palestine, so, all in all, people do enjoy our lodge and don't mind driving long distances to attend our dances.

Our regular meeting took place at the lodge starting at 2:30 p.m. on January 14th. We were happy to have District II Director Henry Vitek, and SL Vice President Bernard M. Gebala. It was an honor for us to have him to install our officers who will take the lead in caring for Lodge 74 in 1979.

Brother Milan thanked Youth Leader Martha Milan, her assistant, Sister Gaye Williams, and the youth members for their fine work done on the Christmas program and Sister Donna Parker, our MC and a special thanks for the greatest Santa Claus.

Sister Mary Hale was our door prize recipient.

We want to wish a speedy recovery to Sister Marilyn Milan who is now recuperating after a week's stay in a

Dallas hospital and to Sister Jeanie Mason who was hospitalized yesterday (Monday) for tests. We hope it isn't anything serious and that she is home soon. Our youth member Kirk Stoeppelman came home last Friday after a 12 day stay in the hospital with his broken leg surgery; to all our sick — get well soon.

Brother Henry and Sister Ann Banfi of Chicago arrived home safely from their Texas visit, and I bet now they wish they were back in Texas.

Brother Don Steinman and family had his mother Appie Steinman from Ohio for the holidays and she also arrived home safely.

We had a cold, cold weekend, but we had a full house for the Disco Dance.

President Robert Dobecka called the meeting to order and youth members Delores Dobecka and Lanette Hykel led the membership in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the. American flag.

Delores then recited the. SPJST pledge.

There were 23 members and 4 guests present. They were Vestnik Editor Brother Rudy Sefcik and his wife, Sister Maxine Sefcik, Carl Alexander and Joe Soukup.

Brother Sefcik installed the officers for the new year 1979. At this time I want to thank him in behalf of the officers and members for the installation and come back anytime to visit with us.

Sister Barbara Jean Hykel called the roll of officers. All the reports given by the rest of the lodge officers were approved as read. Sister Hykel then read several correspondence items.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz gave a report on the youth club. She thanked all the youth and their

13 parents and everyone else who helped make the Christmas program and party a great success. She also stated that the youth will start making projects for the rest home residents for the month of February and that the youth club, if possible, will try to visit the SPJST Museum in Temple Sunday, Jan. 28th. In addition to her report, she mentioned that youth member, David Dobecka has a birthday in January.

Brother Johnnie Krizan reported for the entertainment committee.

To all those who cooked, decorated, donated items, and the youth who put on the program under the direction of Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz and her Assistant Rose Uptmore a special thank you.

14 LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends; Doesn't it seem like just a few days ago we were so hurriedly baking, wrapping gifts and completing preparations for that great time of the year and now, looking at the calendar, we suddenly realize that over a half month of this brand new year of '79 is already gone. Our first lodge meeting of the year was held on Jan. 14 and was well attended. Perhaps we all wanted to mingle after being confined by the ice storms. The regular order of business was carried out and included the installation of officers elected in December. Joe Paprskar read the oath of installation. Our new Flag Bearer Joe Dederichs was not present because of his father's illness.

Joe, Sr. is seriously ill in M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. Young Joe is the grandson of Eleanor and Al Svacek.

We were saddened to, learn that the Curtis Murphys were out of town recently attending the funeral of his father who died in January. Later in the meeting it was announced that our Guide Richard Hubenak was marking his 78th birthday and we all took a moment to acknowledge this in a rendition of "Happy' Birthday". This prompted the information that our only living charter member, Joseph Becan, became 86 years of age on Jan. 3rd. All our good wishes are not reserved for the older members, however, some go to the newborn son of the Donald French's of Hobbs, New Mexico. The new baby is a grandson of the Frank Spaceks and greatgrandson of Ida Foyt. The Carl Zich family is enjoying an extended visit from daughter, Carol, of Florida.

Winter vacations seem to be getting more popular. Missing from the last meetings were the Cihacek sisters, Mary, Phyllis and Hermina, who went to Colorado in November and then visited Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific islands. They often take movies of their travels so perhaps they will show some at the next Ladies' Circle meeting.

It was nice to receive personal greetings from Benedictine Sister Charlotte Vesely of Lisle, Ill., brought home by Lydia Alholm. Lydia and Roy visited their son Tony in Chicago and also toured the newly-remodeled Benedictine Convent. Many of the Czech nuns formerly taught our children in this area. Bernie and Ann Polk had their son and his wife as company for the holidays and together they all flew to Walnut, California to visit in the homes of their two daughters and families who live near

The meeting was called to order by President Harold Bergmann who also led the group in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Roll call of officers revealed all present.

Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting and all the correspondence.

Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Both reports were approved as given.

tuary standing and also stated that Jerry Marusik took out another policy. She also gave the names: Brother and Sister R.W. Georges as new social members. They were warmly accepted into our lodge, and we hope that they will be able to attend our meetings and enjoy the various activities.

The band committee reported their findings. It was decided to give the committee time until the next meeting for a definite decision.

The 1979 food committee consists of Sisters Tiny Ziese, Garda Siptak, Helen Leonhardt and Doris Eckermann. They then reported that the lodge will furnish chicken stew at the next meeting; therefore, the president immediately appointed George Pfeiffer, Reinhardt Georges and El Gene Eckermann to cook the stew.

The youth club will sponsor a Valentine social with the adult club as guests Sunday, Feb. llth, beginning at 2 p.m. The regular second Thursday night meeting was canceled and the lodge will hold a brief business meeting at the conclusion of the Valentine party.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Afterward, members and guests enjoyed turkey sandwiches including delicious cakes, pies, cookies and chips, plus refreshments which were donated by an active and interested SPJST director.

Fraternally, Edith Pfeiffer Reporter LODGE NO. 185, NEW BRAUNFELS Dear Members: Our monthly meeting was held Jan. 5, at Eagles Hall in. New Braunfels.

President Roy Haag opened the meeting. at 8 p.m. with our flag-bearer, Douglas Jasek leading us in the pledge of allegiance. The minutes and treasurer's report were read and accepted.

All officers were present with the exception of Brother Ernest Jasek, who is home recovering from injury due to a tree fall on a hunting trip in December. We wish Brother Ernest a speedy recovery.

Our January Christmas party has been postponed. It was decided to have a spring outing in the month of March. We will have our March business meeting jointly with a social

March 4th at the Canyon Lake area, specific place to be announced later.

Meeting begins at 2 p.m. with social to follow. The lodge is furnishing spaghetti, members are to bring a salad and or dessert. Everyone please plan to come and have a good time.

An executive board was appointed to begin work on revising our rules and regulations for our local lodge.

Membership dues for Lodge 185 were also discussed with no final decision reached. An addition was made to our slate of officers by electing Howard Athas as second vice-president. We welcome him aboard and look forward to his fellowship.

The youth club agreed to go bowling Saturday, Jan. 6 from 4-6 p.m. at Comal Bowling Alley. The youth club also agreed to bring refreshments for the February meeting. We look forward to having more members present at our next meeting. Monthly meetings are: first Thursday of the month Eagles Hall, New Braunfels, Texas. OFFICERS MTG.-7:30; Youth Club - 7:30; and Lodge Mtg. - 8:00.

To my knowledge at meeting-time, we had one member on the sick list, Brother Louis Svetlik had eye surgery. Get-well soon, Brother Louis!

The secretary read the minutes and, after a minor correction, they were approved.

Treasurer's report followed and was approved as were all the rest of the committees' reports. The books were audited prior to the meeting-time and also found in good order.

Brother Zatopek had a short speech of encouragement for us. Thanks and come again.

Our lodge is planning to start a family game night in February, so watch the announcements.

Next meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 14th at 7 p.m.

(Beba) Mazoch Secretary LODGE NO. 183, MID-CITIES Sunday, Jan. 14th, our Financial Secretary Daniel Roznovsky and his wife, Mary Ann, hosted a get-together at their home in Irving for all the officers of Lodge No. 183. Those attending included President Bernard Hlavaty, his wife, Betty, 1st Vice President Gene Havran, 2nd Vice President Barbara Betik, her husband, Bob, and their children, Treasurer Inez Greenlees, and Secretary Maurine Hamilton. Many ideas were dismissed, information exchanged, and projectives outlined for future lodge meetings for 1979. We feel much was accomplished and the get-together such a fun event.

Refreshments were served and enjoyed by everyone.

Bob Betik filled out an application for SPJST sales representative, bringing the total number to 5 sales representatives for Lodge No. 183. We now have Bernard Hlavaty, Gene Havran and Bob Betik of Arlington, Daniel Roznovsky of Irving and Inez Greenlees of Grand Prairie.

Much enthusiasm seems to prevail among our team of officers. We hope this enthusiasm will prove to be contagious and quickly spread to all our lodge members.

Monday, our lodge President Berard Hlavaty accompanied Financial Secretary • Daniel Roznovsky on a business trip to the SPJST Supreme Lodge in Temple.

They were give,n a warm welcome and VIP treatment. After completing their

business with the various officers, they were taken on an enjoyable tour of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. They found the curator, Brother Otto Hanus, a very interesting and delightful person with much history to tell relating to items on display.

I am of the opinion "it's never too late to say thank you." On behalf of all the officers, their families and members of Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities, we want to express our thanks to the editor and those who are responsible for getting the Vestnik in the mail and delivered to us every week for the excellent coverage given to Lodge 183, Mid-Cities before and after we were organized. We sincerely appreciate your kind words and you taking the time to send our lodge the congratulatory Christmas Greetings.

We wish for you a continued success with the Vestnik in 1979. It makes for such interesting reading and contains so much information every week.

Gebala, SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr., District III Director Sid Pokladnik and District VII Director Bob Bayer. We were very proud to have this fine group of men with us and, as always, they are always welcome at Academy Lodge No. 177.

This is our first meeting of 1979 with our 1979 officers to be installed.

President Hutka then asked Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr. to install our new lodge officers. Brother Mikulas told us, the members of Lodge 177 and our new officers, that Lodge 177 was doing a very fine job and he advised all members to support these officers and, of course, we always urge members to attend meetings.

We salute our 1979 officers and are very proud they are willing and able to do Lodge in a good job. We

VEST Nf K certainly thank Brother Mikulas for coming to our lodge and installing our lodge officers.

Since the last meeting Mary Dubec resigned as treasurer. Mary has done the lodge a good job; she was very efficient with her books and always gave a good report. The new treasurer is Josi Tomastik.

All officers and committee chairmen gave their reports.

The new committee chairpersons are as follows: Bar: Wilbert Ramm, chairman; Cecil La Grange, assistant Kitchen: Juanita Ramm Ticket: Pat Tomastik, chairman; Dorothy Lisenbe, assistant The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved by President Bill Hutka. He expressed his appreciation to Dorothy Lisenbe for her fine job she is doing as secretary.

The board of trustees met Jan. 13th with many items on the agenda. Otis Beck was appointed to take the notes of the meeting. Another cleanup crew has been hired. The new crew will clean after all lodge dances and Tuesday after game night. Jerry Tomastik advised he would look into the problem with the frontage.

The new paneling for the bar and the men's room has come in and work is now being done; this is another great improvement of our lodge.

The board also expressed their thanks to Brother Joe Cantu and Sister Mary Dubec for their fine work and many hard hours spent working for the lodge.

Otis Beck is to look into the matter of a trash collector.

Our new youth leader, Betty Hawk gave her report. She reported that her assistant is her husband, Curtis Hawk.

With these fine new leaders, our youth club cannot do anything but be a great youth club. Betty asked for permission to sell tickets on items during some of the lodge functions and after much discussion, permission was given. The youth members want to up-date the youth room, and buy a pool table and games; so please, let's back our new youth leaders and youngsters and HELP THEM! Betty also stated that Karen Balzer and Pat Tomastik would help with our youth club.

Old and new business topics were discussed. Correspondence from the Bell County Livestock Show asking for a donation. Brother Louis Driska made a motion to donate $100 with a second by Curtis Hawk.

The floor was then turned over to our special guest, SL Vice President Gebala. Brother Pokladnik: both of

A letter of correspondence was read from SL President Nick Morris thanking the lodge members for inviting him and his family to our Christmas party.

Brother Mikulas thanked the membership for his invitation and stated he also had a good time.

The meeting was adjourned with free refreshments to all.

Fraternally, Pat Tomastik Reporter BIRTHDAY CLUB SISTERS OF LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON "Happy New Year" how great it is to welcome a new year and to look forward to many a new experience and much happiness.

The January meeting was called to order by Sister Shirley High, our newly-elected president, Wednesday, January 10th at 11 o'clock.

Sister Rosalee Kostom, secy., read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were accepted as read.

The resignation of Sister Rita Alexander, resigning from treasurer, was read by Sister Kostom. The resignation was accepted with regrets. Sister Lillie Spies, after some persuasion, accepted the office of treasurer. Sister Spies will be very good as treasurer but we must remember that this is all very new to her but she is willing to learn and we appreciate this quality in Sister Spies.

Sister Evelyn Mikolas was elected ticket chairman. Sister Mikolas has been ill and was in the hospital for several weeks. We were' glad to see Sister Evelyn at the meeting and, as usual, ready to help with any task.

We have an all new telephone committee except our dear Sister' Sophie Hampel, who is chairman. The other sisters on the committee are: Sister Edna Froelich, Lolean Peeples and Anna Soukup.

Sister Sadie Barlow will be missed as one of our members. She will not be able to belong to the Birthday Club at this time.

Sister Emily Bily was welcomed into the Club as a new member. This makes 3 Bily's now. We have Alice Bily and Tillie Bily as members and they are great members. The Birthday Club has lost two of our most

active members who will long be missed one is Sister Mary Fusig who passed away December 16th. Sister Fusig was always pleasant and kind to everyone and she was very active in the Birthday Club and Lodge No. 88.

Her husband, Bro. Joe Fusig and her lovely daughter, Sister Helen Hegwood and family will all miss her.

Sister Marie Filipek passed away December 23rd. The Birthday Club Sisters will all miss Sister Filipek; she was such a good and kind person-always being helpful to everyone. She was survived by one daughter, Mrs. Georgia Buchanan.

We were sorry to hear that Sister Willie Mae Stang is ill. Hurry and get well! We miss you.

Many thanks to the hostesses for January. They were: Sister Mary Tilich, Della Miksch, Ann Elzner (Bessie Dewer cooked for Sister Elzner) and Ima J. Lero. These good cooks served very good food at the luncheons. We all liked it very much.

There was a committee appointed to revise our rules and regulations so if any member has any suggestions for the best of the Birthday Club, please contact Sister Rosalee Kostom.

Sister Birdie Hilsher has been ill at home for several weeks. I guess she over-worked herself selling SPJST insurance. Sister Birdie sold over one million dollars worth of insurance.

FEATURES SPJST MAKES TJC DONATION Temple Junior College has received a check for $300 from the SPJST Supreme Lodge, for use in support of the Czech language program at TJC. The money will be used for partial scholarships for students continuing in the study of Czech and for the improved instruction, promotion and enrichment of Czech classes, club and cultural programs.

From The State Youth Director Dear Members, Now that we are into the new year with all the Christmas decorations put away and the presents exchanged, we must start thinking about what we want to accomplish during 1979. I am sure we are all jnterested in a good year for the youth of our Society but we just cannot wait until summer to g et started. Now is the time to start getting the youth interested so they will be eligible to be involved with our summer programs. Please take the time now to look over your attendance record and encourage all the boys and girls to attend the meetings so when YAD and camp come around they will have attended enough meetings to participate in these special activities.

It is so sad when a child gets real interested in the plans for YAD and camp but lacks one or two meetings to be eligible to attend. This is the responsibility of the parents and the youth leaders to encourage them.

Don't wait until after it is too late.

Looking at the average attendance for 1977 and 1978 we had a slight decrease in attendance, according to t he quarterly reports. What this tells me is there are boys and girls who are

Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY Dear Members and Friends, The January meeting was my first meeting as the new youth leader for Lodge 177, Academy. My husband, Curtis, is my assistant. We thought we had a nice attendance for that meeting considering the bad weather.

January has not been one of the best months to do much besides stay home and try to keep warm and dry.

Our State King Donnie Lueck and his family have moved to North Carolina the last of 1978. We really miss him and wish him the best of luck. We love you, Donnie.

Since Donnie was the youth club president we will need to have another election at our February meeting. We have lost a few other members for other reasons lately, therefore, the youth club needs to elect a secretary also. Please plan to attend the meeting Feb. 14 to cast your votes.

The youth club members decided to try and buy a pool table for the youth room. We will need to earn some money for this project so come on and let's get to working on this project so we can have some new equipment in our youth room soon.

Be sure to be on time for our Feb. 14 meeting so we will have time to take care of all the business planned. The youth club meeting will start at 6:30, so please be on time.

We plan something special for the mother lodge meeting so plan to stay for the adult meeting. Remember you can add to your points when you attend the adult meeting.

Curtis and I plan to work for the youth so log as we have interested boys and girls who want to work with us. We want your ideas on how to improve your youth club. Let's be one of the top youth clubs in the State like Pat has had for several years. Let's not let her down and keep the

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its January monthly meeting, January 9, 1979. The pledge was led by Tammy Krpec. The prayer was led by Yvonne Krpec.

We had seven guests. The roll call and minutes were read by Yvonne Krpec. The treasurer's report was then read by Sherry Krpec.

We had old and new business and we had our winter program. Poems were read by Michelle Srubar, Vicki Dorotik and Karen Kahanek. Winners from the picture drawing contest were: 6-10: 1st, Michelle Srubar; 2nd, Jean Dorotik, and 3rd, Marcy Dorotik.

After the meeting Feb. 11th, we are going to have our Valentine party.

Door prizes were won by : Adult--Annie Zabransky, Youth--Laurie Chudej, and birthday cake--Melissa Holy.

There were eight members in the meeting and two of them were absent.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone attend the next meeting.

JULIA WATT 80, of Houston who passed away Friday, Dec. 15, 1978. She was a native of Ross, Texas and a Houston resident since 1920.

Sister Watt was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church and of SPJST Lodge No. 142.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Knight of Houston; sisters, Mrs. Sophie Jo Gaines and Mrs. Millie Cuscurida ; brother, Gus Zahirniak, all of Waco; nephew, Jimmy Zahirniak of Houston.

Rosary was recited at 8:30 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 17th at Forest Park Lawndale Chapel, with funeral mass at 1 p.m. at the Blessed Sacrament

21 Church with Monsignor J. J. Davis officiating. Interment was at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were members of SPJST Lodge No. 142.

Sister Watt was the daughter of Henry and Rosa (Petr) Zahirniak. She was born at Ross, Texas on August 8th, 1898.

Resolution Committee: Sidon Tumis Alice Jochen Henry Linhart EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, LAWRENCE ZAVODNY who passed away October 21, 1978 at the age of 46 years.

Brother Zavodny was born December 6, 1931 in Caldwell the son of Frank and Annie Matcek Zavodny. He attended Caldwell schools. November 22, 1958 he married Bernice Krotofil.

He was employed by the Maddox Furniture Co. Survivors include his wife, Bernice, of Brenham ; his mother, Annie Zavodny of Caldwell; five brothers, Franklin, George and Leroy, all of Caldwell. Edmund of Baytown, Jake of Bryan and three • sisters, Leona Wiese of Bryan, Dorothy Kaspar of Houston and Evelyn Brewer of Big Springs.

Funeral services were held October 25, 1978 from the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church of Chappell Hill with Father John Wesslek officiating.

Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Caldwell.

Resolution Committee: Melvin Skrabanek Stanley Mrnustik Betty Suehs EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge 4, Hallettsville, Texas, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, HILMER A. FERTSCH who passed away Friday evening, December 8, 1978 in Peterson Hospital in Kerrville at the age of 71 years. Mr.

Fertsch was a resident of Kerrville since 1953. He was born June 10, 1907 in Hallettsville. The deceased was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church and former operator of the Kerrville Feed and Grain. He was a member of Kerrville Lion's Club and a realtor.

Before moving to Kerrville, Mr. Fertsch owned and operated the Fertsch Produce in Hallettsville.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Benelle Fertsch of Kerrville; a son, Gary R. Fertsch of Kerrville; two daughters, Mrs. Patty Barlow of Kerrville and Mrs. Cheryl Bowles of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Madeline Kirkpatrick of Buffalo, Texas and Mrs. Bernice Persons of Mt. Cilead, Ohio; three grandchildren, Stan and Sally Barlow of Kerrville and Tina Bowles of Houston.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 11, 1978 at 2:00 p.m. from Trinity Baptist Church in Kerrville, with Rev. Bob Schmeltekopf officiating. Interment was in the Garden of Memories.

He was born in Rosebud and lived his entire life here.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rosebud. He was a director of First National Bank, a retired volunteer fireman, a former trustee of Rosebud Ind. School District, a past member of Lions Club, a member of the Texas Cattlemen's Assn. and a retired rancher.

Funeral was held at Green Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Nova 27, with Rev. Odis Cleaver officiating. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery in Rosebud.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lorene Parcus of Rosebud; Mrs. Patsy Springfield of Temple; two sisters, Mrs. Offie Bernsen of Rosebud and Mrs. Mary Nell Phillips of Clute, Texas; two brothers, Elmer of Rosebud and Todd of 1VIaysfield, Tx. and one granddaughter, Lisa of Temple.
