President's Annual New Year's Message and Report Dear Members: It has been traditonal that the president bring you this report at this time each year, in addition to other reports that he renders periodically to the membership in the Vestnik.

Insurance and Membership Growth. Through December 20th, a total of 3,599 applications were received for a total of $18,631,455 in insurance. This compares very favorably with last year's production figures at this time when we had received 3,700 applications for just over 18 million in insurance.

To borrow a line from a popular Christmas carol, "Do You See What I See?" I see that although we wrote a few less members in 1978 than in 1977. We had an increase in the amount of insurance. This means one thing: We are selling larger policies to our members.

Wednesday, January 3, 1979 last year one lodge, Lodge 126 Ross, disbanded and most of the members transferred to Lodge 54 in West. One new lodge was organized, that of Mid Cities Lodge No. 183 in Arlington on December 9th.

It will probably be chartered the early part of 1979. We are in the process of trying to reactivate one lodge and merging two small lodges located a few miles apart. We lack the manpower and time to devote more time and efforts at re-activating dormant lodges. It is a tedious task and there are no pat or magic solutions. We will do the best we can in this area in 1979.

New Lodges Chartered. One new lodge was chartered this year and that was Lodge 187 "Spirit of Round Rock" and that chartering was held on February 12th at Lodge 18 in Elgin. Please remember that in looking at the record, one needs to go back a year or two and look at the number of lodges that were organized and chartered, say, in 1977. Looking at any one year alone does not always give you the true picture.

New Lodge Buildings Dedicated.

We set an all-time record in the SPJST in dedicating four new lodge buildings during the year as follows: Lodge 178 Longview on March 4th, Lodge 188 in Center ville on April 30th, Lodge No. 79 Corpus Christi on August 6th, and Lodge 180 Burleson on August 26th.

These are all nice edifices that are a credit to the lodges and their respective areas and they also constitute a sizeable investment of the Society's funds. Additionally, one new lodge home is under construction, that of Lodge 187 in Round Rock, which will lbe completed and dedicated the early part of 1979.

The record shows that these lodge constructions have been beneficial in terms of membership growth.

In fact, the largest percentage gains during the past two years have been by Lodges 187 Round Rock and 188 Centerville, where one lodge home has been constructed and another is on its way. Lodge 188 registered a 687% increase during 1977 and a 48% increase in 1978. Lodge 187 Round Rock registered a 1000% gain in 1977 and a 307% gain so far in 1978.

Premium Refunds. Premium refunds to members for 1978 through December will amount to approximately $209,000. These refunds are

3 prepared by our computer service in Austin and sent out by the Financial Secretary's Department, including the annual postage allowance for mailing these refunds to members.

8% Refund To Lodges. The 8% refund to lodges for 1977 through December will amount to approximately $146,000. These are also handled by the Financial Secretary's Department.

Death Claims. A total of 334 death claims were paid through December 7th, with 8 pending at that time. These are handled by the Secretary-Treasurer's Department. This figure is considerably less than last year's figure of 390 at this same time. This number represents many good and loyal brothers and sisters who have left our midst.

Brother Helny's Passing. We must record the passing of our good brother, Vice President Joe B. Iiejny, who was buried in his hometown of Ennis on May 25th.

We feel his loss deeply. God grant him and all our departed brothers and sisters eternal rest.

Vice President. Bro. Bernard M. Gehala. After Bro. Hejny's passing, the Supreme Lodge appointed Bro. Bernard M. Gebala to the position of vice president to fill Brother Hejny's unexpired term. All of us feel we made a wise choice. Brother Gebala has been in office officially as of 1 October 1978, but was getting acquainted with his duties for some period prior to that. He is a very personable individual, with a lot of enthusiasm and innovative ideas. He has already made his mark on the Insurance Department and we are confident that he will contribute to the continued growth of the SPJST through a vigorous sales and training program. We have a splendid team in the Home Office with a feeling of close cooperation. The spirit and enthusiasm are there; all we have to do is to translate all of that into positive results.

Workshops For 1979. The Supreme Lodge has agreed to again sponsor and conduct local lodge officers' workshops in 1979. These workshops are for the benefit of local lodge officers. We would like to see 100% attendance at these workshops, so we ask that you place a very high priority on attending. These workshops are for

local lodge presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, financial secretaries and the "lodge treasurer or some other person designated by the lodge." The dates and places of these workshops are as follows: Saturday, March 10, Hallettsville High School Saturday, March 17th, Lodge 29 Taylor Saturday, March 31st, Ennis Sokol Hall We are announcing these dates earlier than we did last year so that there should be fewer excuses for not attending. It can be said that some of the problems that arise on the local level could be avoided if the concerned officers attend these workshops.

Youth Department. 1978 was a good year for our Youth Department. This time of the year (October through about March) is a slow time for the Youth Department, but we need to be thinking about and planning all the activities involving our youth to make them eligible for next year's competitions and awards. In other words, use this "slack period" to plan for the busy months ahead. I commend all of those involved in our Youth Program, especially the local lodge youth leaders who are the backbone of the program and whose tasks are seldom easy and often thankless. Without them, youth activities on the local lodge level would be severely hampered.

I am also indebted to our State Youth Director and the seven District Youth Counselors for their work, because it takes the cooperation of the youth themselves, youth leaders and assistants, and especially the parents, along with the leadership, to make the youth program a success. We must not overlook the local lodge officers. if they do not encourage or cooperate with the local youth program, this might prove to be a serious handicap. They need to offer their assistance and encouragement to the youth leaders and assistants. To the youth leaders, I would have this encouragement, which is in the form of a statement made by Phillips Brooks: "Nobody knows what a boy (girl) is worth, and the world must wait and see; for every man (woman) in an honored place, is a boy (girl) that used to be."

4 $PJST History. I have distributed a total of 157 typewritten (doublesPaeed) pages of the SPJST History. That includes through the X.Ilth Convention in East Bernard in 1936. I have completed most of the work pertaining to the XIIIth Convention held in Taylor in 1940, but that was the convention that had such a profound effect on the operations of the SPJST, both during the convention and after, that that convention will require a little more research than the others. I have received a few inquiries as to what the deadline is for submitting lodge histories. No deadline has been set and my standard answer has been to send the material as soon as it is composed.

You will recall that in the last convention it was more or less stated that this work would be completed by the time of the next convention in 1980, however, it should be remembered that the late Bro. Edward L. Marek was assigned the task of compiling the histbry in the Supreme Lodge meeting of July 1976.He died in May of 1977 after not having committed anything to paper and at the same time had become ill. I was subsequently assigned the task in the Supreme Lodge meeting of Silly 1977. This means that a year was lost before any work was actually started on this project. I want the membership to know that I am trying very hard to comply with the convention mandate, but at the same time ask that it be understood that I did not have anything to do with the project until July 1977. I am devoting all the spare time I can to it, especially these last few weeks when other activities normally abate somewhat. It is a tremendous challenge, and I must say in all honesty, a genuine thrill. It is also tedious and one must have a high regard for objectivity and accuracy. Without a good knowledge of Czech the task would be almost hopeless because most of the documents and letters available on the subject are written in the Czech language. I am sure I can make this, statement: If the history is not completed by the time of the convention, it shouldn't be too long after that that it will be.

I am appealing once again to those persons who have been charged with the responsibility to get me their finished lodge his-

tories as soon as possible. They should refer to the letter and outline that I sent out to the lodge presidents dated 20 January 1978.

It is important that the lodge historians follow that outline as closely as possible for the sake of uniformity and equal treatment of all lodges. If there is a major delay in the final publication, it will probably be because of the lack of information from the local lodges. I have issued previous appeals, but these lodge histories are coming in very slowly. In the meantime, however, I will continue working on the other chapters of the history.

Acknowledgements. My gratitude is expressed to all my colleagues — officers and directors in the Supreme Lodge, for a job well done during the past year. They have served you well. Their January report will reflect that the Society is being well managed. A thorough and complete audit is conducted by the directors in the January and July meetings each year and reported to the membership in the Vestnik. The financial secretary, vice president, and secretary-treasurer make monthly reports to the membership in the Vestnik. The proceedings of all Supreme Lodge meetings are published in the Vestnik. Your president has reported to you periodically as the need arose in our official organ.

My gratitude is likewise expressed to all the Home Office employees for their good work and loyalty to our Society. I might mention, in case some of you may have forgotten, that we now have two State Field Managers in the persons of Brothers Silas Smith and Gene McBride, one with some years of experience and the other rapidly accumulating that experience. Brother McBride has already been out on his own and has made a good impression upon those he has encountered.

To all lodge officers and workers who work so tirelessly at the many tasks at their lodges, my sincere thanks, because without them, lodge activities would come to a halt. Regrettably, it is often the same few who are making most of the sacrifices and the rest are enjoying the fruits of their efforts.

These tasks should be shared by a greater portion of the membership; the load would thus be more evenly distributed and less of a burden.

It behooves us all to at least check as to whether our services are needed by volunteering throughout the year, rather than showing up once a year when everything is prepared and ready for you. Operating a lodge, especially a large one, is a year-around, 12 months business.

Along with all the benefits and privileges there must also be responsibilities. Fraternal Benefit Societies such as ours must operate on the lodge system. That is a legal requirement. We are grateful to you for making our lodge system work, and in order to keep it work ing we must actively participate M it.

We wish to thank the editor and publisher and the staff of the Cechoslovak Publishing Company for their publishing and distributing our official organ on schedule each week. Our official publication serves as the main link of information among our membership.

Many thanks also to Brother Otto Hanus of our LAM Department for his work in our Library, Archives, and Museum Department.

This is a unique attraction to many people. Visitors have come here from all over the state, nation, and even from abroad. This area of our Home Office is unique in that it's probably the only one of its kind in Texas and most likely, the Southwest.

Our thanks are also expressed to our Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Jack Weinblatt, who has been most cooperative in fulfilling his obligations and responsibilities with the medical applications received in the Home Office.

I wish also to acknowledge the fine work and cooperation of our Actuary, Mr. David Huff in Austin, for his work during the year in performing various actuarial services and financial advice. As in any insurance corporation, the actuary in the SPJST plays a little-known but very important role.

We wish to gratefully acknowledge the many invitations we have received, not only during this Holiday Season, but throughout the year. They were all appreciated. We were privileged and honored to fulfill requests to install officers at several lodges in recent weeks, with some still to come early in 1979. We wish we could have attended more of the functions to which we were invited but there were simply too many conflicts to attend every-

Wednesday, January 3, 1979 thing. We did our best. I have always believed that it is of mutual benefit for the leadership and members to exchange views and hear firsthand the feelings and opinions expressed.

Top Ten Lodges. I would like to give you the standings of the top ten lodges in our Society, along with some comments and observations. These figures are as of 30 September 1978. Comparing this list with the same list a year ago, we see that there are no changes, as far as the ranking goes.

The two newcomers to the list last year have maintained their positions this year—Lodge 74 Lovelady and Lodge 25 in Ennis. As pointed out earlier in this report, two lodges not in this listing registered the biggest gains in membership percentagewise: Lodge 188 Centerville and Lodge 187 Round Rock. Some nice gains were registered in some other lodges not listed among the Top Ten. Inflation And Life Insurance. It is certainly no news that inflation is squeezing all of us. That message has teen coming through loud and clear with increasing frequency from all levels of government during recent months, perhaps years.

From all indications, the situation is not improving much and the word recession is being bandied around. All of us know that the cost of living has been steadily increasing over the past few years.

Everyone's buying power is being eroded. Life insurance is one of the best hedges against inflation.

You can buy SPJST life insurance at today's rates, or increase your present coverage, to protect your family's economy years hence. It is a known fact that many families do not have enough life insurance to protect their standard of living

when the breadwinner is gone from the scene. Figures show that although families have been increasing their life insurance protection, income has risen even faster, meaning that there has been a slippage in protection levels over the past decade or so. And life insurance rates have generally remained steady down through the years, although almost every other - VREME LODGE segment of the economy has experienced increases. Any way you look at it, it's one of the best bargains around.

LODGE NO. 1:+:, CENTERVILLE Dear Members and Friends: We had a very special Christmas dance for members only Dec. 15th.

It was no surprise with all the hard work of our faithful members.

I would like to recognize some of them, who are: Dortha Mellas and Doris Monroe who put up the tens% mistletoe and beautiful arrangements, with the organization of Mr. and Mrs. Van \Vey. Special thanks go to the ones who brought refreshments. Ruthie Sullivan, Virginia McEacheon, Virginia Thomason, Marjean Mallard, Craig Smith, Buster King, and Evelyn Schwab were some of the ones who brought food and helped in so many ways.

We had our usual dance Saturday night, Dec. 16th and everyone enjoyed the band.

Our meeting was held on Dec. 17th and some changes were made, which you might note. We have decided to change the price of admissions at the door. Prices will be like this, as of Dec. 23rd: Adult members (18 and up) — $2 per person Child members (1-17) — $1 per person Non-members, adult (18 and over) — $3 per person Non-members, children (1 - 17) — $2 per person The meeting that night was a special treat for our kids. Santa came to visit with his bag of goodies. The kids loved every minute of it. The older teens went to sing Christmas carols on a hayride. It was an evening for all to enjoy.

We also set a price for our New Year's Eve dance, which will be history when you read this. Prices were: adult members, $5; nonmembers, $6; youth members, $2; non-member youth, $3.

Chas. Ellison provided the music.

I would also like to remind you that there will be skating from 3 to 4 p.m. every Sunday afternoon.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Guests: I have skipped one week's report and as a result I am late giving a report on the fine music that has: a beat that anyone can dance to and that is the Country Combing tions. They performed here on Dec. 16th.

Dec. 23rd we had American Sun' rise and it seemed that everybody, had a good time and did we have a good crowd. We had many members who have been missed for some time coming to our Saturday night dances. .

Our lodge is decorated with Christmas bells and lights and a beautiful tree that was donated

by Brother Ray Johnson and stalled by Brother Wallace Flasowt ski, Sister Amelia Flasowski, ineluding Brother Bill and Mary McInnis and several others including the youth club. It is a masterpiece of work donated by all those find members who do care for the lodge and want it to be outstanding at all occasions.

There are many new people coining into our community and we have more industry and it results in our community growing. We appreciate all of you members getting acquainted with the new personnel here and telling them about our SPJST Society and our local lodge. That's the only advertising we do, because SPJST is a selective organization. We do not advertise in our local newspaper or on the radio.

Our next meeting will take place at the lodge, beginning at 3:36 p.m. We will have installation of officers. At the present time I cannot inform you who will install the officers, but we will have someone to do it and pictures will be taken and will be published in the paper.

By Naomi K. Spencer During this Holiday Season the Hlahol Dramatic Club wishes to extend greetings and best wishes to all.

We would also like to thank our truly faithful members who have been so wining to extend themselves in order to make the dra,matic club a success. As the old adage goes, "The show must go on," regardless. We have said it before and it is true that the curtain does not go down permanently just because a member of the cast may have to drop out, regardless of the reason. There is always a member of good standing who may be called upon to pick up the loose ends to make it easier, if possible, for the directors. Thank you again, dear ones.

I would like to announce our forthcoming play, "The Eager Miss Beaver," a three-act comedy full Of the unreal, but also full of genuine fun for your pleasure. Please keep the date of Jan. 28th open for this entertainment. The curtain will go up at 2 p.m. for, a barrel of fun, and a dance follows. You will also want to come early to enjoy -a hot dinner with the usual beverages and pastries of your choice.

Sister Annie Mucha representing the senior members of Lodge 29 spoke briefly on their regular meeting and Christmas party held Tuesday, Dec. 5th. She thanked for the president being there at their party and also the property committee and thanked the lodge for providing the food. Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris was also present at the party.

Youth Leader Melvin Steger reported that they had their Christmas party Friday night, Dec. 8th with 41 members present and one visitor. They plan to go to Academy to a, dance, instead of exchanging gifts. The youth club gave everyone a gift at the rest home.

Names were drawn for the tickets the youth club members were selling for their money - making project. The winners were: 1st — John Page, 2nd — John Page, 3rd — Pete Rodenbeck.

LODGE NO. 29, TAYLOR Dear Members, Lodge No. 29, Taylor, held their regular monthly meeting combined with a Christmas party Dec. 10th, at 3 p.m. with a great number of members, relatives and friends attending.

Flag bearers, representing the youth club, led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance. We remained standing for our deceased member, Frank Labaj.

President Adamek welcomed our guests, Mrs. Annie Hejl, Lad ZatoPek and his wife, and Sister Cornelia Hejl; all of you, come back and visit us again.

After roll call of officers, Secretary Mike Kaiser read the minutes of the previous meeting.

SOFTBALL TEAM REPORT FROM LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Before the year 1978 ends, I have one more report to make and that covers our last event, the annual softball team banquet which was held Sunday afternoon, Oct. 29th, in the very spacious backyard of Ida and Lionel Schulz and our host and hostess were Annie and Otto Janousek.

Since the team did not win a league trophy no steaks were on the menu but rather "crow" (barbecued chicken); though, I guess we really prefer steaks. The chicken was prepared under the supervision of Albin (Bing) Vrana and Connie Brennan, and it was delicious and enjoyed by all. We want to thank them both for a job well done and to anyone who may have helped in any way.

During the afternoon, a keg of pivo, soft drinks, mixed drinks, plus dips and delicious hors d'oeuvres were enjoyed by all present. We wish to thank all the ladies who brought the above plus cookies, cakes, and goodies; it was kind and thoughtful and it really added to our party. We wish to thank Annie and Otto Janousek for donating the chicken; both of you are swell people and your generosity means so much to the team. We also wish to thank Willie and Caryln Ondrusek for the table of mixed drinks, ice, and mixes; they were really appreciated by those who preferred them instead of the pivo.

Games of horseshoe pitching were enjoyed by most of, the players present. We wish to thank Ida and Lionel for the use of their home and backyard for the party and for the other extra things they did to make everything perfect. My most sincere thanks to Lillie Jarma for the planning and purchasing of all the necessary things for this occasion. We also thank Roy Andrews for the use of his stainless

Steel cooker and for helping return the chairs and tables to the lodge hall. Our appreciation is also expressed to Paul Bartos and Lionel Schulz in picking up the chairs and tables and returning them to the lodge. Thanks also to the mother lodge for letting us use them for our banquet.

I wish to thank Lionel who helped me so much during the sea son as my assistant manager and thanks to all the players on our squad this season. I enjoyed my association with you so much and though I had intentions not to manage anymore, I have changed my mind and will try for one more season, and this I assure you will be my last one. We do and will have a successful season next year, with all of you or most of you coming back, plus four or five new recruits which will really make us strong contenders. Although the past 25 years of being associated with the team has really been fun and rewarding, all I ask for this next season is for all of you to come back and let's make this the best year ever.

My deepest thanks also to Lionel Schulz, our wiener roast chairman, Connie Brennan, our fishing trip chairman and Jerry Manak, our ticket chairman; your contributions added greatly to a most successful and enjoyable season.

We had a short program and the team awards were presented. The team batting championship trophy was awarded to Don Jarma, who won it with a .352 batting average for the season. The team's most valuable player award (voted by the players) ended up in a tie and the winners were Lionel Schulz and Don Jarma. Trophies were presented to both players and I know they were both proud of this honor. Although we did not win a league trophy, we had a very good won-lost record and we came in fourth place in the City Playoffs, which is a record we are all proud of.

LODGE NO. 179, WARRENTON Dear Members: Our Warrenton lodge held their regular meeting Thursday night, Dec. 14th, in Zapp's Kitchen with a large attendance of members and visitors. Among our many guests, we were privileged to have had in our midst District I Director Jahn Kubena and District V Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska, who also initiated all our members who were not previously initiated.

President Harold Bergmann opened the meeting by leading the group in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Roll call of officers revealed all were present.

Secretary Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting and Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Both reports were approved as given.

Dorothy Oltmann gave the financial standing and read the name of the new member, Ronald Klump. We warmly welcome him into our midst.

The Christmas greetings were read and viewed and it was deeply appreciated and so thoughtful for the officers of , the Supreme Lodge, Aubrey Hackemack of Iran, and so many others to remember our lodge at the Yuletide Season.

Since we only had a brief business session, all new business and committee reports were tabled for

Wednesday, January 3, 1978 the next meeting, except the food committee stated the lodge will furnish turkey sandwiches at our next regular meeting.

The president expressed thanks to those who baked the turkeys, made the dressing and those who brought a covered dish, cake, pie or cookies, or helped in any other way to make this Christmas meeting an enjoyable event.

Special thanks to Brother and Sister Arnold Peters who provided the lodge with a keg of "soda water" in memory of their birthdays and 40th anniversary of their marriage. We wish them many more There being no other business, the meeting adjourned.

Now. for the gala event: The youth club presented the Christmas program around the glamorous tree, joined by the adults in singing Yuletide carols. Then the exchange of gifts added a touch of joy to young and old.

The party concluded with a sumptuous meal consisting of delicious baked turkey and dressing, including all the delicious side dishes and desserts.

Our next regular meeting will be Thursday night, Jan. 11th, at 7:30 p.m. in Warrenton Store Guest Room.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 107 Floresville held its regular meeting Dec. 3rd, 1978, at 4:30 p.m. President Bayer called the meeting to order and led the members in the pledge of allegiance. Roll call was answered by all the officers.

Minutes were read and approved and reports from Financial Secretary Hrna and Treasurer Braila were also read and accepted.

At this time Financial Secretary Hrna said he wished to resign his office due to his health. A motion was made by Billy Pavliska that his resignation was accepted.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer gave a report on the club activities for December.

President Bayer reported he had pictures of five past presidents.

The annual social and Christmas party were held on the 13th of December. The weather was very disagreeable and, therefore, the turn-

out was not as good as could be expected.

Christmas Greetings from the Supreme Lodge officers were acknowledged.

A thank-you note from Alvin Hrna was also read.

President Bayer commented on the loss of Adolph Miculka, an SPJST member for 72 years, at the time of his death he held membership with Lodge 133, San Antonio.

Dear Members: The year 1978 was a prosperous one for our lodge. As your president, I express heartfelt thanks to everyone who has made it possible for us to continue to grow.

You have shown your unselfish character in supporting people who are in need by allowing several benefits to be held at our lodge, thus raising thousands of dollars for various charities. Your generous donations to various civic organizations exemplify your concern for organizations other than the SPJST. Most of all, you have taken your rightful place in the community as an active, participating leader in our school and community affairs.

A good example is the $3,000 donated to the school this year. This certainly displays our strong urge to be doers of good deeds.

The youth slub deserves our utmost praise for their accomplishments during the past year — a youth club that worked very hard during the year and was rewarded by receiving many first-place honors, plus a state youth king.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, MUSEUM Dear Members and Readers: As the year 1978 is soon coming to a close I would like to make a brief report on our LAM Dept.

— particularly our museum. We have had visitors from many states and several foreign countries.

Many of these visitors came through because their friends had visited us before and recommended our museum to them; this is fine advertising for our SPJST. We are adding something, to our museum almost every week and just recently, we have received a Vletnamese ceremonial smoking pipe. This you should see. This pipe has a stem 10Y2 feet long and the bowl of the pipe is beautifully burned by hand by Vietnamese artists. This fine addition to our museum came from Mr. and Mrs. Bill Williams and Lisa of Corpus Christi.

Another new display that many of you have not seen is the handiwork of Mrs. Marie Macas of Roseberg, Oregon. This is fine embroidery and crocheting; some of these pieces are priceless, yet Mrs. Maces chose to display them here.

We invite all of you to visit our LAM Department, soon.

We are still looking for a small windmill, a five shovel cultivator, a 15-tooth V-shaped harrow, a double shovel and a Go Devil cultivator

to help round out the pioneer farmers display. You'll never find a better display for your relics than our museum where they will advertise your family and gifts forever; many donors have expressed themselves concerning their pleasure in having placed their relics in our care. Write us what you have and we will either pick it up or make arrangements to do so.

Our library has also grown to be the largest Czech library in the United States in one location, yet we have room for more books, in any condition, just send or bring them in, get your name on our Golden Book.

What kind of books do we have?

We have educational books, religious books, agricultural books (in this category we have the complete library of U. S. Department of Agriculture Yearbooks courtesy of Congressman Bob Poage), then we have a lot of poetry in both Czech and English. These books are available for your use at no charge if you pick them up; if riu order them by mail, your only cost is the postage both ways and this is only about 20c per book. You can have the books for up to six weeks but if you should not be able to finish reading them in that time, you simply drop us a card and we will renew the loan for additional time. We will be glad to send you a list of our books in both languages for you to select from. Remember this is your library, use it for your pleasure or education.

CZECH TAUGHT AT BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE We have just completed 24 hours of Czech language at Brazosport Community College, Lake Jackson.

The Czech language course is three hours on Thursday evenings, for eight weeks.

Geography, history, and customs of Czechoslovakia and Czech music is included as part of the course.

A number of Czech i students have repeated and then advanced to Czech II. In February we are expecting a large enrollment in the spring

quarter both for Czech I and Czech II. Thanks to the financial support by the SPJST Society toward the Czech language course at Brazosport Community College.

Mrs. Subertova Smith, the lady from Czechoslovakia, is the instructor of this Czech language course.

Charlotte Banik Charlotte Banik, a senior at West High School, was recently named the local winner of the Voice of Democracy contest sponsored locally by the West V.F.W. Post 4819. The contest is part of a nation wide contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Miss Banik was chosen the first place winner from a field of 204 Junior and Senior entries from West High School. Second place finisher was Rusty Kaddatz. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Kaddatz.

Charlotte is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Eianik.

The judges narrowed the field down to the 12 best entries and then chose the first and second place winners.

Charlotte's essay also was entered in District Competition.

Why I Care About America

by Charlotte Banik "The land of the free and the home of the brave" - America.

Pride, tradition, freedom, and people make this great land the world superpower it is today, and will be in the future. That is why I care about America-we have a future.

No person will invest money in a project unless he is assured of future profits, yet, Americans can readily invest in their country's future because of the huge gains acquired in the , past..

We can be assured of a glorious future because of the many t factors which will work for us.

Our pride in our country, work, schools, family, and self, makes each American strive harder for once-thought impossible goals. Several years ago, to put a man on the moon was unheard of; yet, Americans worked together, succeeded in doing the impossible, and brought about great advances in our technology. Today, Americans are working on new sources of energy, and with cooperation and time, new energy sources will be found and put into use.

Tradition--it keeps the good separated from the best.

American is founded, built, and lead by tradition. Yet, this same tradition, which gives us so much, also costs Americans.

Our traditional roles as protector and peacekeeper lead us into two world wars and two major skirmishes. Even today, America is the major force in leading the way to peace in the turbulent Middle East.

Everywhere in America you can find the backbone of our country, the working force. In the past, Americans have set a shining example for workers of other countries and helped America become the leader of industrial nations. For a nation whose farmers produce enough'. food to feed the world, a person must marvel at the durability of the American worker. No where in the world can you find a country with a balance between industry and agriculture. Our private enterprize system plays a big role in maintaining this delicate balance. In order to

Americans have do, and always will love their freedom.

Ever since this great country began, Americans have been fighting for their freedom and its preservation. The govern ment of the United States plays the role of protector of the rights of its citizens. A constitution was written by a group of conscientious men who realized the importance of freedom and less government control, in a successful democracy. This constitution and its amend ments insure a citizen of his freedoms, and spells out exactly what freedom entails.

Along with freedom comes responsibility. Americans have the responsibilities of supporting their government, obeying its laws, and defending their nation. In order to insure these freedoms for our children, we, as Americans, must be willing to fight, if necessary, for our country's well-being and continued strength.

I believe that America will remain the great nation it is today and will be in the future, because of the determination and pride of its people, its great traditions, and, most of all, its freedoms which remain to the oppressed people around the world, the beacon of hope which lights up their future. These are a few of many reasons why I care, and hope that everyone cares, for America.

Youth Club went caroling at the IOOP home for the aged. Santa jars, filled with candy and nuts, were given to each resident of the home.

Afterward the meeting and Christmas party were held at the lodge hall. Santa Claus was the guest of honor and had plenty of goodies for everyone. Games were

We also sang carols and those who went were Brenda and Yvonne Kresta, Vicki Dorotik, Jean Dorotik, Marcy Dorotik, Karen Kahanek, Michelle Srubar, Marjorie and Linda Treumer; the-mothers who went with us were Mrs. Jerome Dorotik, Mrs. Alvin Kahanek, Mrs. Albert Kresta and Mrs. Lad Srubar.

We also visited the El Campo Museum which is beautiful with all the animals and the Christmas theme carried out all in reindeer.

I do hope we brought some cheer to the grandpas and grandmas.

Everyone brought presents to exchange with each other and Father Isidore provided us with a comical film which everyone enjoyed very much. After the film the presents were passed out and when all of us had opened their presents Santa Claus came for a short visit and handed out his sacks of goodie& Then all of us sang a couple of carols and our youth leader, Nellene Spacek gave everyone a box of candy which everyone enjoyed.

The following Wednesday, the lodge went caroling and afterward we had refreshments.

3n ennui= EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, FELIX PAVLAS, of 2302 Niagra, Corpus Christi who died Sunday, Dec. 17, 1978, after a long illness at the age of 84.

Brother Pavlas was born Jan. 18th, 1894, in Flatonia, reared and educated there before moving to Abbott, in Hill County; later he moved to Corpus Christi, in 1940.

He was a building contractor before his retirement. He was a mem-

Funeral mass was celebrated at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, with burial in Seaside Memorial Park.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Karline Kelinske, Mrs. Lillian Bodine, both of Corpus Christi, and Mrs. Helen Mynar of West; two sons, Felix Pavlas, Jr., Leo Pavlas, both of Corpus Christi; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Kocian of West, Mrs. Molly Vybiral of Abbott; five brothers, Anton Pavlas, Joe Pavlas, Frank Pavlas, Victor Pavlas, and Albin Pavlas, all of West; 22 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

CAUSES FOR THE DROP IN LEARNING AMONG YOUTH

Following are 20 causes for the drop in learning among America's youth: 1. Television has become a prime dispenser of knowledge and has created a society of nonreaders and de-emphasization of written communication skills.

2. Students are encouraged to get involved in work/study programs and related job-oriented alternatives, which cancel out many academic subjects and take them out of school a good part of the time.

3. Itmovations in education have weakened the emphasis on teaching basic fundamentals in academic subject areas.

4. There is a lowering of standards in the quality of instruction and increased leniency in grading.

5. Today's society has become so

permissive toward youth that the growth of students' rights without a corresponding growth in responsibilities has led to descipline problems that require teachers to spend valuable teaching time in maintaining order — with a resultant loss of interest in teaching skills and student achievement on their part.

6. Economic conditions have brought about a change of attitude regarding college plans, and students are becoming more job-oriented than school-oriented, creating a lack of motivation to high academic achievement on the part of both students and teachers.

7. Poor testing results are a reflection of society's attitude toward and regard for achievement. A deterioration of value systems and goals of education has undermined the common body of knowledge to be taught.

8. With the cutback of the Space Program, interest in science teaching and learning has declined.

9. Broken homes, creating instability of the family unit, have lowered student achievement through lack of parental control and interest and eneouragement.

(The number of white children living with both natural parents has recently dropped to 86.7 per cent; and the corresponding number of black children is at a tragic 50.7 per cent.)

10.Curriculum changes in secondary schools lean toward types of classes that have high student interest -- not necessarily science and math.

11. Short-term courses do not import the necessary knowledge.

12. Less emphasis is placed on cognitive learning and greater emphasis is given to the affective domain.

13. Too many tasks are assigned to the schools.

14. The increased use of alcohol and drugs has impaired students' learning abilities and cooperation.

115. The rise of American antielitism and anti-intellectualism and the weakening of nationalismpatriotism has contributed to the general apathy of students toward achievement.

16. The preoccupation of professional associations with negotia-

tions has had an adverse effect on curriculum planning.

17. Teacher training institutions and inservice programs within schools are not truly relevant to today's or to the future's needs18. School boards want the prestige of more modern programs, thus -creating instability in the school curriculum structure. (For instance, "new" math is void of practical application.)

19. With the declining job market, there has been a marked change of attitude toward attending college — and schools have adjusted the curriculum downward, with resultant loss of high-caliber college requirement courses.

20. Less ability grouping in recent years has caused the achievement level of students to drop.

There's an old Zen saying that the last to understand the ocean are the fish.

Life insurance is a bit like that, since almost all of us are touched by the costs and potential 'benefits of life insurance and few of us have more than a rudimentary understanding of the industry.

We'd like to be able to tell you in a few short simple paragraphs how to tell the difference between good and bad insurance in the same way we can warn you about to difference between high and low interest rates.

But the plain truth of the matter — as expressed by Federal Trade Commissioner Michael Partschuk at a recent hearing on the need for nationwide insurance reform— is that "comparison of the cost of different policies, whether whole life or term (insurance), is virtually impossible."

Even an old pro like syndicated columnist Sylvia Porter (whose column appears weekdays in The Dallas Morning News) has found herself in a tight spot over insurance matters.

By May, however, Porter was explaining to readers "the whole concept of deposit term, is coming under the scrutiny of the Million Dollar Round Table, an organization of (whole life) insurance agents."

And she pointed out that "there are at least some one-year renewable term policies on the market that are less costly than at least some deposit term policies."

Which brings up a critical point -- cost comparison information on various types of insurance companies is still tack in the stone age. The careful shopper is faced with an increasing proliferation — aided` by the quasi-magical skills of the corporate computer programmer -- of policies, options, and riders which literally boggle the mind.

In 1973 Ralph Nader called on Congress to establish "meaningful disclosure laws which would give the consumer the information necessary to compare the relative price and terms of different policies at the point of sale."

And he recommended establishment of computerized consumer information systems which could easily accessible when the consumer wants it.

And, finally, Nader called for the establishment of over-the-counter state or federally sold life insurance to citizens to provide a "yardstick competition for private companies" and expansion of social security death benefits above the present level of $255 to $10,000.

Although Congress listened, no action was taken and Nader's statement that "the life insurance industry is perhaps the last giant industry to come under the legislative microscope" remains as true today as is was then.

Authority for regulation of life insurance sales remains almost entirely with each state's insurance board or agency. And in Texas, the only mandatory price comparisons available are delivered by agents who sell you replacement insurance to take the place of an existing policy. A replacement form is filled out and given to the buyer in advance of the sale.

So what is the careful shopper to do when buying life insurance?

Within days, however, companies which market the insurance had obtained an injunction stopping the order from going into effect. and, more recently, the insurance board withdrew its order.

"The attorney general felt the order was non-defensible," explained an attorney for the insurance board. The only official comment at the time of withdrawal was that the order had "technical deficiencies which may render it subject to misinterpretations."

One Capitol source, however, indicated the board probably lacked legal authority to issue such a sweeping order against a particular form of insurance.

Deposit terms policies offer exceptional interest rates (as high as 7.5 percent) on the deposit, which usually enables the buyer to double his deposit (usually $10 for every $1,000 in insurance) in ten years. Criticism of deposit term insurance centers around the fact that if a customer drops the policy within a year or two the company keeps the deposit.

Defenders of the deposit term adamantly defend the product, pointing out that: —Buyers are informed orally and in writing that their deposit will be forfeited if they stop paying the premium.

—If you drop whole life insurance (the type which builds up a cash value over the years), within a couple of years you can lose as much or more than you will lose if you drop deposit term.

The last point is critical. Herbert S. Denenberg, former commissioner of the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, noted in "The Shoppers Guidebook . . . to Life Insurance" that policies must be compared with policies rather than type with type.

Some term policies cost less than some deposit term policies, and some whole life policies cost more if dropped within the first couple of years — than some deposit term policies.

And regardless of what type of life insurance one is considering buying, it is unwise to invest in a cash value earning policy of any type — deposit or whole life — unless you are quite certain you will be able to continue payments throughout the life of the policy.

One reason agents who sell whole life are so concerned with the deposit term-type policy is that salesmen often encourage customers to switch from a whole life to deposit term and invest the accumulated cash value in their current policy in high-paying annuities (highinterest long-term accounts.)

Traditionally, information on lapsed policies is not generally made available to the public. However, Ralph Nader, in a statement before, Oongress, several years ago,

19 quoted statistics from two major insurance firms which indicated that 19 to 25 percent of ordinary life policies purchased by 25- to 35-year old men lapsed in the first year, in the second year the figures were between 10 and 15 percent.

And the industry estimates that after the critical first two years, lapse rates are about four percent annually.

Each of the policies described in the chart was written for a 35year-old male in good health. All but Deposit term B were written by the same firm.

As can be seen, the cost per year for a policy dropped after five years varies from a low of $151 to a high of $613. In this case the least costly policy of those surveyed was a whole life type policy which accumulates a cash value.

The cost per year of policies dropped after only two years and also varied widely from a low of $275 to a high of $1,623. In this case the most costly policy was also a whole life.

A few other things should be pointed out: —These figures are the basic policies. They do not take into account various special features sold by the companies, which may make the buy either better or worse. Nor is the integrity and reliability of the company and agent taken into consideration.

—These policies represent neither the highest nor the lowest policies of their type available in the area.

No effort was made to ascertain where they are on the scale between highest and lowest cost.

—Cost factors may vary significantly for a male or a different age.

—Average cost per year of most insurance policies will decline greatly after the policy has been in effect for 10 or more years.

Learn the facts on getting credit before applying — laws may differ from state to state, says Linda McCormack, family resource management specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

For example, in Texas the creditor or credit application may ask about marital status. This is legal in a community property state,

such as Texas.

The creditor may also ask: —whether the applicant is married, unmarried, or separated, when applying for a joint account or an account secured by property —for information about the applicant's spouse A creditor, however, must not ask the applicant's sex, race, national origin or religion unless he/she is applying for a real estate loan to buy a residence, the specialist continues.

In this case, the creditor may ask for voluntary disclosure of sex, marital status, race and national origin.

This information helps federal agencies enforce anti-discrimination laws, she explains.

In applying for credit, a creditor should not ask: —about the applicant's plans for having or raising children —whether the applicant receives alimony, child support, or separate maintenance payments unless the creditor first tells her that she does not have to disclose such income unless she wants to rely on it to get credit.

In deciding whether to give the applicant credit, a creditor must not: —consider applicant's sex, marital status, race, national. origin or religion —consider age (unless the applicant is too young to sign contracts) —consider whether a telephone is listed in the applicant's name (although he may consider whether there is a telephone in the home) —consider the race of the people who live in the neighborhood where the applicant wants to buy or improve a house with borrowed money In addition, the creditor must inform the applicant whether the application was accepted or rejected within 30 days of filing it.

The creditor must give specific reasons for the rejection immediately or give specific reasons if the applicant makes a request within 60 days.

Special note to women about their credit histories: if married, divorced, separated, or witiowed, make a special point to call or visit the local credit bureau to make sure all relevant information normally carried by the credit bureau is in a credit file under your name, the specialist recommends.

20 PROTECT AGAINST CREDIT CARD LOSS Protect against credit card loss to avoid problems and financial burdens.

Millions of credit cards are lost or stolen each year with millions of dollars of unauthorized purchases made on these cards, says Claudia Kerbel, a consumer information specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

Consumers are partially protected against financial losses when credit cards are lost or stolen. The federal Truth-in-Lending Act provides that the maximum liability of a credit card holder is $50 for unauthorized charges made on a credit card.

However, many consumers carry a number of credit cards and if, for example, they lose ten cards, they are liable for $500.

To avoid problems and financial burdens of credit card loss, follow these tips: (1) Cut up and throw away all cards not needed or used regularly.

2) Maintain in a safe place a list of all credit cards and their numbers.

(3) Keep a list of the toll-free numbers to contact if cards are lost.

Most companies that provide credit cards will provide a postage paid postcard to send in the event that the credit card is lost or stolen Keep this in a safe place because it will show the credit card number as well as a toll-free number to call.

(4) Notify the issuer of a lost card immediately (5) Upon receiving a new card, sign it immediately.

(6) Never loan a credit card to anyone who hasn't been authorized to use it by the issuer — this is a violation of contract.

To recognize the possible signs of credit card theft, check the monthly bill closely, the specialist advises.

POSSIBLE DRUG ABUSE PROBLEMS Possible drug abuse problems can arise from prescribed drugs as well as illegal drugs.

Many people think of drug abuse only in terms of drugs that are obtained illegally, off the street or from other sinister sources, says Carla Shearer, a health education specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, TAMU. It is very possible, however, to become dependent on drugs and to have a drug problem through the use of doctor-prescribed drugs, she says.

These drugs might include tranquilizers, stimulants, sleeping pills and pain relievers.

An even larger problem can arise as a result of combining these drugs with alcohol, the specialist warns.

However, before drug abuse problems can be solved, the user must first realize that there is a problem.

To help in determining this, a person may ask himself or herself the following questions.

(1) Am I defensive if a friend or relative mentions my drug or alcohol use?

(2) Am I sometimes embarrassed or frightened by my behavior while under the influence of drugs or alcohol?

(3) Have I ever gone to see a new doctor because my regular physician would not prescribe the drug I wanted?

(4) When I am under pressure or feeling anxious, do I automatically take a tranquilizer or drink or both?

(5) Do I take drugs and drink alcohol at the same time?

(6) Do I take drugs more often or for purposes other than those prescribed by my doctor?

(7) Do I regularly drink alcohol or take drugs to help me sleep?

(8) Do I have to take a pill to wake up in the morning?

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you may have a problem with drugs, alcohol, or both.

Parents can help= smooth this phase of their children's development and ease some of the pains for themselves by preparing for the inevitable changes to come.

Accepting Change — Parents often find it difficult to accept the actions of their grown children, or are unsympathetic to them. They must take into account how strong the impact of the changing outside, world is upon young adults, the specialist points out.

Young adults must function in many situations which force them to compromise or alter values they learned from their parents.

Parents must recognize that their children are not rejecting them personally even though they may reject their values or standards.

Parents and children can accept each other even if they cannot accept different habits and ways, she says.

Human Needs — Even though values and habits change, the basic human needs do not change from generation to generation.

"Underneath the sometimes immature exterior or seeming indifferent attitude lie the same human needs to be loved and accepted by the families they love.

"Regardless of the differences that may exist between the attitudes and ways of life, young people do wish to remain close to their families.

"They want their families' support," Ms. Lamson says.

Likewise, his self-image greatly determines how he approaches others or responds to them.

Family teaches self-worth. People learn self-worth — they are born knowing nothing about their own worth.

Parents, and other family members, teach children self-worth.

Self-esteem starts with the parents' own self concept.

Parents with high self-esteem usually have little difficulty finding good things about their children.
