The Yuletide season is here by all indications and appearances of the day to day lives of most people. Nearly everyone is trying to appear more friendly, whether they really mean it or not.

Personally, your editor has always had a rather logical outlook about this season of the year. In the very first place, our parents were of the type who appreciated any kindness shown them and very definitely taught their children to be kind to their fellow human beings always and not only during Christ mas season and that included all living things. You know, to go out of the way to be kind to some one only because it is the Christmas season is rather hypocritical; why not practice that way of life all through the year each and every year?

Then, on the other hand, the winter solstice has been observed by the human race for thousands of years, especially in the Northern Hemisphere.

Our readers may ask what is the winter solstice? In Czech it is called: "slunovrat" — sun's return.

In the winter the northern half of our planet Earth is turned further away from the sun, and about Dec. 23rd or so, it begins to tilt back in the opposite direction; therefore, for the northern half of our planet, that is the time of the calendar year when our days are the shortest. Of course, at this time, the evergreen trees were and are very much a part of the lives of all and are celebrated as the beginning of a new year and the coming of spring again, and, quite naturally, became a part (and still are) of the season. As time went on, the evergreen tree became associated

Wednesday, December 20, 1978 with the Christmas season; then came the later additions of the birth of Christ and Santa Claus through the centuries. There are many different customs and traditions associated with this Yuletide season in very many ways in very many countries of the world.

While our northern part of our Earth, north of the equator, experiences the colder climate of the year (and that is where much of our population in the Americas and Europe-Asia, etc., lives) the southern part of our planet is, on the hand, rather warm and so the season of Christmas is quite different there. Just imagine what it would be like to try to celebrate Christmas in June in the United States!

Before you read the next Vestnik the shortest day north of the equator will have arrived and gone and the days will begin to be a little longer. * * While on the subject of Christmas and the season thereof it is rather appropriate that we state information about some fraternal events which happened at two of our SPJST lodges, namely, Lodge No. 54, West, and Lodge No. 35, Elk. There are letters in the Vestnik pertaining to both meetings at these lodges.

The meeting at Lodge Jaromir No. 54, West, was convened at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10th and at about 2:25 p.m. your editor departed to attend the Lodge Nove Kvety No. 35, Elk, meeting which was scheduled for 2 p.m. Upon arrival the meeting was in session and well along the way.

It is needless to say that both meetings were very fraternal and enjoyed by the good fellowship displayed by all members concerned.

Of course, all may not be pleased with some decisions, however, you can always be sure that the good of all concerned is what decides the future course of a lodge or our Society.

Brother John Sulak of Lodge No. 54, West, furnished the delicious beef barbecue (free) while the lodge furnished the trimmings, here is a member who enjoys being a fraternalist!

At Lodge No. 35, Elk, they, as usual, had a delicious meal of turkey and dressing and, lo, all the cakes and delicacies! However,

3 we had to depart to go back to Lodge No. 54, West, and so was spent a fraternal weekend in this short period.

We had been invited to several lodge functions that day, however, we thanked them and know that they had an enjoyable day of fellowship. Your editor is reminded of the quotation: "There's not too many celebrations; there's just not enough of me."

We hope to have some pictures of some of the lodge meetings in this issue. * * Lodge Mid-Cities No. 183, Arlington, was organized Saturday, Dec. 9th, 1978, and the write-up and pictures by Sister Jeanette Smith are in this issue. We regret we could not be present and certainly wish them the best in 1979, and the future. * * Watch that loan! A new survey by the American Council of Life Insurance found that among ordinally life insurance policies on which death benefit payments were made, nearly 13 percent had unpaid policy loans.

What this means is that the policyholder borrowed against the value of his or her life insurance policy and didn't repay the loan for one reason or another. When death occurred, the amount borrowed plus any interest due was deducted from the proceeds paid to the policyholder's family. The Council survey found that the average benefit payment on such policies was 26 percent less because policy loans were not repaid.

NEWSBRIEFS Charlie A. Vaja, 57, of Houston, died Tuesday, Dec. 5th. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m.

Dec. 7th, at Heights Funeral Home Chapel in Houston, with Rev. James Shelton officiating. Interment followed at 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Fairbanks Cemetery. Brother Vaja was a member of Lodge 142, Houston.

McBride and his wife, Prances, and daughter, Amy. Then he turned the meeting over to &FM Silas Smith for the election of officers of Lodge No. 183.

Brother Smith said it was very nice to be there for this occasion because we have been working on Lodge 183 for some time, that Brother Alvin Nesuda had been up here several times and so has he, himself, on several occasions, to try to get things going. He said he felt now that we were going to progress and there was only one

way to go, and that was forward.

He explained the rules concerning the election of officers according to the SPJST by-laws.

Nominations were then opened for president. Bernard Hlavaty was nominated and elected by acclamation.

First Vice President. Daniel Roznovsky and Eugene Havran were nominated. Eugene was not present but Betty Hlavaty, who had nominated him, said that he would accept. Silas explained since Eugene was not present, in order for him

SL Vice President Bernard M. Grebala addressing the assembly. to be elected to office he would have to obtain two-thirds of the votes cast. The vote was taken and every member present voted "for:' Daniel Rotnovsky then declined, and Eugene Havran was elected by acclamation.

Second Vice President. Bob Betik was nominated and accepted; then it was learned he was not a member of the SPJ'ST (his wife is).

Brother Smith explained he could not hold an office if he was not a member of the SPJST, so his wife, Barbara Betik, was nominated and elected by acclamation.

Secretary. Maurine Hamilton was elected by acclamation.

Financial Secretary. Daniel Roznovsky and Inez Greenlees were nominated; Inez declined, and Daniel was elected by acclamation.

Treasurer. Inez Greenlees was elected by acclamation.

Youth Leader. To be elected at the next monthly meeting when the committees are appointed.

Brother Eugene Havran, vice president elect, then arrived.

Name of Lodge. Inez Greenlees made the motion it be called MidCities Lodge No. 183, because it was Daniel Roznovsky's idea. Bernard Hlavaty seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Meeting Day and Time. Bernard Hla,vaty made a motion that the meetings be held on the third Sunday of each month, at 2 p.m. Mo-

Meeting Place. To be announced later by President Bernard mavaty and each member will be notified.

Sister Betty Hlavaty then asked Silas Smith, if it would be better to have the meetings in one place each time or in different locations, since different cities were involved.

Brother Smith replied that it is up to the members of the lodge, but one place centrally located would be best.

Brother Silas then asked Treasurer Inez Greenlees to come forward and also District III Director Sid Pokladnik. Brother Sid presented Sister Greenlees with two checks for Lodge 183, on behalf of the Supreme Lodge.

Next in order, Brother Silas asked President Bernard Hlavaty to come forward and Brother Smith presented Brother Hlavaty with the gavel for Lodge 183.

Afterward Brother Silas asked SL Vice President Bernard Gebala to come forward. Brother Gebala took over the meeting and called on District III Sales Representative Alvin Nesuda to say a few words.

Brother Alvin said: "We have been working for this day for a couple a: three years." and added that he was glad to be present. He offered his help to the members.

Brother Gebala then explained that District III Sales Representative Nesuda would be working close to them. He then explained that at any time State Field Manager Silas Smith and Gene McBride were available to help in any way that they could, just call on them.

Then came time to turn the meeting over to Director Sid Pokladnik, who spoke on being a member of SPJST, the benefits and how important it is to be active in your lodge. He said the rules and regulations of their local lodge should not conflict with the SPJST bylaws.

Brother Pokladnik gave a brief history of SPJST, its beginning, etc. He said he hoped they would have 100 members or more, and have their chartering as soon as possible.

President Hlavaty took over and asked the newly-elected officers if any of them had a few words they wished to say. None of them did, so he said he had nothing more to say until the next meeting

Dear Members, The December meeting and Christmas social of Lodge No. 187 were held in the home of Albert and Elsa Lange. All officers answered the roll call of officers.

New members accepted into the lodge were Adeline and Reginald Geistman and Joe and Laurie Bledsoe.

We were very happy to have Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernard M. Gebala and his wife, Evelyn, as special guests. Dear Members: The undersigned Rules and Regulations Committee will hold its next (and probably last this year) meeting on Dec. 28th, at 7:30 p.m. in Seaton Star Hall. The purpose of this meeting will be to incorporate any additions that the committee members may have received from the members since we passed out copies of these proposed R & R on Dec. 3rd. These will be handed out at the Jan. 7th meeting. In the meantime, if any of you have anything you would like added to the R&R, let one of the committee members know. At this point, it is not our plan to change what has already been put in writing; that will be done by the membership in the meeting of Jan. 7th.

8 LODGE NO. 35, ELK Dear Members and Friends: The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 35, Elk, was called to order Dec. 10th, by President Henry Breitkreutz, Sr. Flag Bearer Eddie Ray Banik led the pledge of allegiance.

President Breitkreutz welcomed our visitors: Janette Fitch, Dawn Branch, Link Branch, Elizabeth Dennis, Lucinda Dennis, Donny Dennis, Erna Lentz, Gary Putman, Kathy Kubitza, and Karen Kubitza. Come back again!

Secretary Albert Banik was called on to read the minutes of the November meeting; these were approved. Brother Banik read a thank-you note from, Brother Vernon Wood, Jr. and Christmas Greetings from the Supreme Lodge, and from our editor, Brother Rudy Sefcik.

Treasurer Henry Breitkreutz, Jr., was called on to give his report.

Youth Leader Sister Rosemarie Banik gave her report. The youth club will have their Christmas party Dec. 21st. Sister Rosemarie asked all the members who had birthdays in December to come forward. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Brothers Charlie Pavelka, Timmy and Tommy Pavelka and Sisters Terri Hand, Sondra Dieterich, Gloria Pavelka, Angela Pechacek, and Charlene Stead.

Committee reports were given by Helen Dulock (kitchen), Eugene Pavelka. (entertainment), Johnny Stachley (refreshments). They thanked everyone who helped them.

We welcomed our new members: Carl Webb, Ruth Kubitza, and Richard Kubitza, (additional).

The New Year's Eve dance will start at 8 p.m. The door will open at 6:30 p.m.

Refund checks were handed out.

Door prizes were drawn and winners were: Youth — Tracy Breitkretitz; adult — George Holub.

Brother Rudy Sefcik then installed the officers for 1979.

After the meeting the youth club presented a Christmas program and, as always, it was very much enjoyed by everyone. Eddie and Charlotte Banik sang a song they composed, "Go Tell It On The Mountain." Christmas was in the air. The Entertainment Committee gave special honors to the members over 65 years of age.

There was a delicious meal of turkey and dressing and all the trimmings served. At 6 p.m. the music started and everyone danced, then about 7 p.m. Ole' Santa Claus came through the door and the children all flocked around him and, of course, that made the night.

LODGE NO. 81, NEEDVILLE Dear Members: The regular monthly meeting and Christmas party were held Dec. 10th, at 2 p.m. with President Charlie Matcek presiding. The pledge of allegiance to our flag was recited by all present. The attendance was very good although the weather was disagreeable.

The minutes were read by Sister Mary Werner and, after a minor correction, they were accepted as read. She also read several Christmas greetings to the lodge. Aleene Zwahr wished everyone happy holidays and a prosperous year, 1979, before she gave her financial report. The treasurer's report was given by Corlis Vallet.

A good report was received from the special fund treasurer, Gilbert Walzei. All of these reports were

accepted as given. Gilbert Walzel also read the schedule of activities at the hall during the holiday season.

Sister Darlene Blinks, reported that her husband, Alvin, is in the hospital with back injuries received in a wreck. He is at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital. A/so, Sister Matilda Slacalek is in the Park Plaza Hospital. She is one of our devoted members and we missed her at our last meeting. We hope you and Brother Blinka will soon be on the road to recovery.

We welcome two new members to our lodge: Tod Leon Stavinoha and Kimberly Pieper. We hope you will attend our regular monthly meetings. In my last report I omitted Brother Victor Werner's name from the Entertainment Committee.

Please accept my apology. Sister Benita Waizel was appointed as chairwoman of this committee.

The president read a letter from the Czech Fest Booth Committee.

The members voted to discontinue our booth at the Czech Fest Festival next spring.

All the officers who were elected for 1979 were present, so they were installed by Brother August Teykl.

The date for our annual chili supper was set for Feb. 13th, so everyone mark that on your 19'79 calendar.

Refund checks were handed out.

The attendance prize was won by Tillie Mikeska. The meeting was adjourned.

Christmas carols were sung by the group and as "Jingle Bells" was sung, Santa Claus appeared on the scene. The children were very excited as he handed each one a bag of goodies.

A delicious supper followed, which we enjoyed by everyone.

Fraternally, Mary Ann Krivanek Reporter SPJST — LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members: With time pressing relentlessly on the holiday season will soon be upon us once again. It Is the time of the year when families and their long-time favorite acquaintances assemble to re-affirm the bonds linking them to their parents, close relatives and friends. Only one week separates Christmas and New Year and for most persons this is the time for assessing the results of the year just past.

At our lodge it was a delightful year with memorable events of great significance where activities throughout the year never cease.

The recent one was our lodge meeting combined with a Yuletide party for members and their friends.

After the introductory portion of the meeting, Brother Ernest Zahirniak called for observance of a silent moment in memory of Brother Frank J. Cocek, our recording secretary for many years, who died Nov. 20th. May he rest in eternal peace. On behalf of the lodge our sympathy is extended to the 'bereaved family. Those of us who worked with Brother Cocek in lodge affairs, will miss his devotion and humor.

Maxine Sefcik was asked to read the minutes of the previous meeting. The minutes stood approved as read. Correspondence acknowledged and read were from the Frank J. Cocek family, the Senior Citizens Nutrition Program, and Season's Greetings from the SPJST Home Office, and from Editor Rudy Sefcik and his family.

Reports from other officers were heard and comments followed by each respective officer. Brother Zahirniak pointed out the cost of electronicai expenses and suggested methods that could be taken to reduce these expenses in the future. Brother Bob Wright likewise

In addition to the youth leader's report, Maxine Sefcik, complimented Mona Zahirniak for her continuous interest with the youth of Lodge 54, and asked the membership to give her a standing ovation.

New members: A list of nominees were read as follows: Katherine Iverson, Lenora W. Eisma, Robert Joe Kasik, Joe Dujka, Jr., and Anthony C. Mynar (additional policy). Transferees into Lodge 54 include Johnnye Caralou Young and Marile Gene Allen of Lodge 47, and Amy Christine Kasik and Robert Christopher Kasik of Lodge 66. A motion was moved and seconded to accept these members for membership. Motion carried.

Before we held election of officers, President Zahirniak expressed his sentiments about our departed Brother Frank J. Cocek, who was a faithful officer of this lodge for many years and will be missed by those who were closely affiliated with him.

The chair recognized and exoressed everyone's gratitude to i3rother John Sulak, who donated and prepared a large portion of delicious barbecue for the festivities; the lodge supplied the trimmings, and several ladies brought delectable pastries to complement the meal. The Kitchen Committee equally rendered their services to accommodate the large attendance.

Brother Rudy Sefcik extended Season's Greetings and congratulated the members on their choice of nominees for office in Lodge 54.

This correspondent would like to share her comments about being an active member of the SPJST. It is at a lodge meeting where you may see and learn just how well your officers are managing your affairs. It is at a lodge meeting where you will learn about your own fellow members who may be in need of your help or whose family is in distress. It is at the lodge meeting where you might learn of the illness of your fellow members whom you will visit, comfort and console in their sick rooms. We must keep this in mind: meetings are an important factor in the life of our Society. Lodge meetings play a very important role in the life of our own SPJST and it, therefore, behooves us to attend them and take an active part in all functions. When you, as members of your Society, take an active part in all the lodge work, by that very fact, you are taking a hand in your own interest. Let's see a large number of new faces at our meetings and other functions in the new year. May we count on your participation?

In conclusion, I would also like to share a holiday recipe that has been my favorite every year: Take the crisp cold of a December night, add two generous parts of snow, stir in air so clear it tinkles. Into

a generous heart mix the wonder of a little girl, the sparkle of a young boy's glance, the love of parents, and set gently before the chimney side. Add the lightest touch of a reindeer's hooves, a sprig of holly, a scent of fir. Set the mixture to rise in the warmth of a dream of good-will to men.

It will J be almost ready to serve when it bubbles with warmth and good feeling. Bedeck with the light of a star set in the East, garnish with shining balls of gold, silver and red. Serve to the tune of an ancient carol in the middle of the family table. This recipe . is sufficient for all the men and women you will ever meet.

Fraternally, Maxine Sefcik Secretary-Reporter - SPJST — LODGE NO. 20, GRANGER Dear Readers: The Granger Komensky Lodge No. 20 held their annual meeting and Christmas party Sunday, Dec. 3rd, at 2 p.m. with some 70 members, relatives, and friends present.

After the roll call and reading of the minutes there was a moment of silence for our departed Brother Jos. H. Machac, Jr., who died Friday, Nov. 24th at the age cf 75 years after a lengthy illness He was a member of Lodge No. 20 for 58 years.

Reports were heard from Brother R. F. Holubec, treasurer and Brother J. D. Shirocky, property committee chairman. Sister Cavanaugh, financial secretary, reported that she had good collections all year and has had no problems with any members.

Sister Marburger, secretary, reported that for the year 1978 the Granger lodge has gained 26 new members; nine members have died and one member transferred out.

Sister Marburger, youth leader, reported that they have gained 13 new members and the youth club consists of 35 active members.

New members joining Lodge 20, Granger, were as follows: Kevin Repa, Donald Repa, Daryl Repa, Flora Ann Milder, Milisa David, Gregory David, Vanessa David, Nicole Richter, Amanda Richter, Patrick Jezisek. Transfers from Austin Lodge No. 155 were: Gloria Ebner, Alan Ebner, Terry Ebner, and Lance Ebner. We wish to take

12 this opportunity to welcome all our new members and transfers; we know each one will be a great asset to our club.

The officers were installed by Brother Henry Marak, ex-president.

The meeting adjourned and the members had a break for 30 minutes after which the youth club led all the members in singing Christmas carols. Santa Claus made his appearance during this time visiting with the children and adults and joining in singing of Christmas carols. Santa then gave all the children bags of goodies and wished everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year as he rushed off to visit with other boys and girls.

Everyone was then invited to loin in the lovely buffet of barbecued chicken and sausage, buttered parsley potatoes, beans, plus many other salads and sweets.

Czech tapes were played through out the rest of the evening.

This is my last letter as secretary of Lodge 20. I would like to thank Brother R. F. Holubec who has helped me greatly during these two years and has been most patient with me and I have appreciated it very much, and I have learned a great deal during these

VESTNIK two iyears. I wish to welcome Sister Alice Mazoch as secretary of Lodge 20 and to let her know all she has to do is call if she needs help.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, MUSEUM Dear Members and Readers: As the year 1978 is soon coming to a close I would like to make a brief report on our LAM Dept.

We have had visitors from the following countries and states: Czechoslovakia --- 26 Nebraska — 9 Oklahoma — 6 Iowa — 2 California — 9 Massachussetts — 1 Tennessee — 1 Ohio ® 6 Wisconsin — 3 Kentucky — 1 Pennsylvania — 3 Illinois — Louisiana — 4 Kansas — 2 New York — 6 Missouri — 2 Indiana — 2 Nevada — 2 New Mexico — 3 Mississippi -- 2 Many of these visitors came thnough because their friends had visited us before and recommended our museum to them; this is fine advertising for our SPJST. We are adding something to our museum almost every week and just recently, we have received a Vietnamese ceremonial smoking pipe. This you should see. This pipe has a stem 10 1/2 feet long and the bowl of the pipe is beautifully burned by hand by Vietnamese artists. This fine addition to our museum came from Mr. and Mrs. Bill Williams and Lisa of Corpus Christi.

Another new display that many of you have not seen is the handiwork of Mrs. Marie Macas of Roseberg, Oregon. This is fine em-

broidery and crocheting; some of these pieces are priceless, yet Mrs. Macas chose to display them here.

We invite all of you to visit our LAM Department, soon.

We are still looking for a small windmill, a five shovel cultivator, a 15-tooth V-shaped harrow, a double shovel and a Go Devil cultivator to help round out the pioneer farmers display. You'll never find a better display for your relics than our museum where they will advertise your family and gifts forever; many donors have expressed themselves concerning their pleasure in having placed their relics in our care. Write us what you have and we will either pick it up or make arrangements to do so.

Our library has also grown to be the largest Czech library in the United States in one location, yet we have room for more books, in any condition, just send or bring them in, get your name on our Golden Book.

What kind of books do we have?

We have educational books, religious books, agricultural books (in this category we have the complete library of U. S. Department of Agriculture Yearbooks courtesy of Congressman fob Poage), then we have a lot of poetry in both Czech and English. These books are available for your use at no charge if you pick them up; if you order them by mail, your only cost is the postage both ways and this is only about 20c per book. You can have the books for up to six weeks but if you should not be able to finish reading them in that time, you simply drop us a card and we will renew the loan for additional time. We will be glad to send you a list of our books in both languages for you to select from. Remember this is your library, use it for your pleasure or education.

Sister Helen Valcik was stricken with a severe nose bleed while visiting with her daughter, Helen Schnell; it happened at night and Helen had to rush her to Heights Hospital where she was confined for five days. This all happened three weeks ago and now she is in circulation again; I am sure it was no fun; stay well.

The Falteseks were reported to be in a weakened condition; they are more or less confined and unable to venture out of their home.

The youth club members, with Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg paid them a visit with a prepared dinner which both appreciated. Several members mentioned the couple's plight and asked to extend a helping hand. If possible, go and see Frank and Mary Faltesek. Get well soon!

Brother Pete F. Sustala, brother of our Birthday Club Sister, Mary Johnson, passed away in a local hospital Dec. 2nd; rosary was recited Dec. 4th, and funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 5th, in St. Theresa Catholic Church in Sugar Land. He was laid to rest in Memorial Cemetery. Pete Sustala is survived by his wife, Hattie; daughters, Mary Helen Sherod, Katherine Williamson, Shirley McDonald; eight grandchildren; six sisters and two brothers, all of Houston. Our sincere sympathy to the surviving family.

Again this year I had the privilege to be invited to the special Christmas gathering of old friends and new ones. Kenneth and Nelda Lawrence, for the tenth consecutive year entertained for the Christmas holidays with a refreshing punch and a delicious buffet dinner followed by a variety of desserts. Kenneth was gracious and offered to get me and bring me back home which I gladly accepted.

At the precise time, Kenneth, with a young lady, Mrs. Susy Duckworth from Egypt, came to pick me up.

Arriving at their home, Nelda was in the process of final touches to the well-arranged atmosphere of their cozy home with an open fireplace glowing. It was visible that Nelda has that certain touch of a perfect hostess. First to arrive was Rev. Eugene Vickrey, with his daughter, Gina, a -lovely young lady. 14 fined. Mr. Karel Kaderabek, with spouse, Marie; Mr. John and Mrs. Maxine Herdon; Dr. Erwin Adam and spouse, Dr. Vlasta Adam, with daughter. Alice; Dr. Thomas Klima and spouse, Dr. Mamie Klima, and daughter, Eva, all arrived and it was a pleasure to have three lovely ladies in our midst. Everyone missed my brother, Frank Dvorak, and wife, Frances; it was the first time in ten years they were not with the group. It seems Frank is contented to stay at home in his comfortable reclining chair. Kenneth made a tape of the Christmas carols we sang with a few words of regret that Frank and Frances were not with us; this tape will be presented to the Dvoraks on their next visit. Gifts were exchanged which brought out Ohs and Ahhs and it was time to bid goodnight with wishes for a successful year and departed to our homes. Thanks!

The English play, "The Eager Miss Beaver," will be presented in January, 1979, as reported by Naomi Spencer, chairwoman of Hilthol Dramatic Club. The cast of this comedy attends to regular rehearsals and is prepared to deliver a perfect performance for us to enjoy. The final date will be announced soon.

Ed Gerlach big band music, once again will entertain us on Saturday Dec.; 23rd. It will be a gala affair with the ladies in evening gowns (no pants of any style permitted) and men in suits or tuxedo.

The New Year's Dance tickets are going fast as reported by Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox. Admission is $10 per person.

We had the election of officers for 1979. The following are officers for the coming year.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last meeting was held Sunday, Dec. 3rd, 1978, at 2 p m. with lodge president, Brother Alfred Klusacek in charge. Flag Bearers Gene Skrabanek and Josef Morris led the members in the pledge of allegiance to the flag and everyone remained standing in silent tribute to two deceased members, Brother Tom Scott of Heidenheimer and Brother Rudolph Tyroch of Baytown. Sincere sympathy to the bereaved families of our beloved deceased member. We shall also miss them. May we honor their memories forever and may they rest in eternal peace.

President Klusacek welcomed all to the meeting and recognized the visitors: Marylou Skrabanek and Brother Otto and Sister Matilda Hanus of Lodge No. 66, Waco. We enjoyed having you visit and please come, again.

Lodge Secretary Dolores Skrabanek was asked for the roll call of officers and sales representatives.

After this she read the minutes of the previous meeting and these were approved as read. The correspondence included: the mortuary dues from the Supreme Lodge; a thank-you card from the family of Vince Motl for the wreath of flowers sent to the funeral of the deceased, a Christmas card from the editor of the Vestnik, Brother Rudy Sefcik and his family; and two cards from the Supreme Lodge; a letter from Dr. Clinton Machann for the cooperation of the lodge officers and members and the use of the hall at the symposium, Czechs in Texas, in October, and a letter of resignation of Sister Barbara Bryant , as the youth leader for 1979, due to the family's move to Germany with the Army, in

April, and she said it would be an injustice to serve four months and then have to leave.

I had received a letter from Sister Lucy Scott regarding the many courtesies that the lodge members had bestowed on their family during the years and especially to Brother Tom Scott who passed away Nov. 18th, 1978. She wished to thank everyone for the flowers, words of sympathy, and other acts of kindness to them in their time of sorrow.

We discussed the oversight of not sending a wreath of flowers to the funeral services of Brother Rudolph Tyroch. We learned of his death after the burial, so we are to send the family a check, td . apply to a memorial fund or other charity of their choice in his memory.

The only one reported as being hospitalized at the time of the meeting was Brother Leon L. Sodek. Here's hoping his recovery is near and he can be released from the hospital. Get well soon; you are being missed.

New members accepted into the lodge were Paul Entmit Willie, Edwin J. Malcik, Eva M. Stewart, Glen Gene Bartek, Janet Michelle Sodek, Debra Kay Sodek, Brenda Lynn Sodek, John Edwards, Lori Ann Kohutek and Clarence James Sula.

Debra Hyzak transferred from Lodge No. 20, Granger, to our lodge.

We welcome each of you named and start the new year off right and come to the January meeting, and if possible, attend all the functions of Lodge 47, throughout the year.

The officers' reports were given and the chairmen's reports for November were good. The board's minutes were read by Sister Kosarek. They had completed the Christmas party and discussed the prices of beverages at the appreciation dance and New Year's Eve dance. The chairmen's salaries remained the same as this year. Al Grebnick's dance will be held Thursday, Jan. 18th, 1979. The doors will open at 7 p.m. with dance time from 8 to 12 p.m. with admission $3.00 per person. Make plans to enjoy their good music again during this tour. The Brother and Sister award for 1978 was dropped, for this year only, because some did not believe that the requirements and qualifications

The sisters are to bring cakes for the refreshments instead of buying doughnuts. A roster of ladies' names will be posted and the kitchen chairmen will choose who will bring a cake when asked.

The election of chairmen was the next item on the agenda. After a motion for the entertainment to be taken by the lodge president and it passed by a vote of 28 to 10.

It was stated that the 1979 rules and regulations may conflict, if adopted. Copies of the proposed R&Rs were distributed, one per family, to be studied so we can form an opinion for the vote to be held in the Jan. 7th, 1979 meeting.

All of the chairmen will be voted on in this meeting, after a question why the trustees didn't see fit to increase their salaries for the last five years. The board of trustees is to review these salaries again in their meeting.

Planning Committee members named to serve for two years are: Brothers Elmer Skrabanek, Floyd Stuteville and Calvin Skrabanek; these and Brothers Henry Mares and Eugene Kurecka will decide what improvements have priority over others. The president and vice president are members of this committee, also.

Youth Leader Calvin Skrabanek reported that 25 youth club members were present in addition to oner adult visitor and one new member enrolled. There was no social planned, except for the lodge Christmas party, Sunday, Dec. 10.

Premium refund checks were distributed to those present to accept them.

Door prize winners were Sisters Irma Klinkovsky ands Dolly Pechal.

The next meeting is set for Sunday, Jan. 7th, 1979, at 2 p.m., with the installation of officers, the adoption of Rules and Regulations for 1979, and the selection of a youth leader.

The Christmas party was held Sunday, Dec. 10th, with the youth program complete with the appearance of Santa Claus at 4 p.m.; the social hour of eggnog, beer, and soft drinks being served from 5 to 6 p.m.; at 6 p.m., the lines formed for the meal, an abundance of delicious roasted turkey and dressing and other trimmings and sweets made everyone hungry. After the meal, the lodge offi-

cers and board of trustees and their spouses were introduced by Lodge 47 president, Brother Alfred Klusacek and then the youth club officers and assistant youth leaders were introduced by their club president, Joe Morris. Thanks to everyone who participated in the youth program, Santa Claus, for his annual visit to the delight of the young and old alike, to the kitchen help, bar help, eggnog chairmen, sisters who 'baked the turkeys, to those who brought salads and sweets, and to the retiring lodge officers for their donation this past year.

Two dates in 1979 to remember: Sunday, Jan. 7 — Lodge meeting Thursday, Jan. 18 — Special dance with music by Al Grebnick of Nebraska.

Reservations for the New Year's Eve dance are being sold by Woodrow and Gladys Marek at the Saturday night dances or by calling their home (817) 773-3914. The music will be by the Hi-Toppers of New Braunfels.

Dear Members and Friends: We had a fine band to perform their talents providing music for our dancing fans by the Country Show. Most everyone was dancing and having a good time. I've heard many good compliments on the Country Show, and many persons are anxious to have them back to play for us again.

Dear Members and Friends: Oh, what a beautiful day, after a few dreary and chilly ones.

Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

Brother Milan welcomed back Brother Ray Johnson, who has always been faithful in attending our meetings, but has been out due to a couple of hospital stays and is wished a full recovery real soon; also Brother Frank and Sister Margie Picha.

All reports were, approved as read.

New members accepted and made welcome are Steve Eads and additional insurance for Brother Grover Watson. Sisters Mary Renfro and Jeanie Mason were given a big hand for their good job done the past year.

Christmas cards were read from the Supreme Lodge, Brother Leonard Mikeska's office, our editor, Brother Rudy Sefcik and his wife, Sister Maxine, Sister Anna Hosek, who enclosed a check for $25; and Brother Henry and Sister Ann Banfi of Chicago, with a donation of $10 in lieu of Christmas cards, to their Fort Worth friends, which is appreciated.

Our youth club leader, Sister Martha Milan, and her assistant, Sister Gaye Williams, were busy with the youth, for their participation in the Christmas program.

PATRICK W. VEIT Accordionist Honored at Octoberfest Patrick W. Veit of Point Comfort was presented a plaque at the Octoberfest held at the Bavarian Gardens in Houston, from his former bandleader, A. J. Drabek, of the Dutchmasters Orchestra of Houston.

In August Pat was named the 1978 Texas State Accordion Champion after winning the first annual Texas State Championship Accordion Contest held in conjunction with the El Grande Day Festival in El Campo.

In making the presentation, A. J. stated, "I am very proud of Pat. He is an excellent musician and most worthy of earning such a distinction in the field of music."

— SPJST — TEMPLE JUNIOR COLLEGE RECEIVES GRANT FROM RVOS Temple Junior College has received a total of $250 for Czech language and cultural programs from the Farmers Mutual Protective Association of Texas (RVOS), a Czech-founded farmers mutual insurance company.

The state organization provided $200 and the Temple lodge provided $50 to the Czech scholarship fund. The Farmers Mutual Protective Assn. of Texas (RVOS) recently contributed $200 to the Czech language program at Temple Junior College.

This is the fourth year the state organization has contributed to the Czech program at TJC. The TJC Ctech scholarship fund provides scholarships to students continuing in the study of the Czech language. Other major contributions to the fund include the SPJST and KJT, Chervenka said.

Recent scholarship recipients are Harry Don Gersbach and Rosemary A. Gersbach of Burlington, Eugene A. Mitchan of Cameron, Mary Jo Jez of Temple, John E. Rollins of Belton, Vi J. Adamek of Temple, Clarence B. James of Cameron, Roselee Mondrik of Cameron, Mary K. Becker and Jerome A. Becker of Temple.

TJC has offered Czech on a regular basis since 1972 and currently offers the language at three levels.

A course for beginners will start in the spring semester.

The Czech language department participated in the Czechoslovak Film Festival and Czechs in Texas Symposium held on the TJC campus as well as other Czech related activities in Texas. . - SPJST-

YOUTH SECTION From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members and Friends: The youth club held their meeting on Dec. 13th with a good attendance.

The youth worked on the parents' gifts, decorated the lodge building and practiced their Christmas program.

The Christmas party and program was held Dec. 17th.

The youth went to the rest home in West on Dec. 13th to present their Christmas program, giving little gifts, and also served some refreshments.

Friday, Dec. 15th, our youth club had a bake sale at the Leroy Bank.

Birthdays for December were: Robert Hykel, Beckie Mynar and Raymond Joe Hromadka III. Kevin Dobecka brought the cake; a Christmas cake, and it was real pretty. Thank you, Kevin. Shirley will bring the cake in January.

We were invited to Lodge No. 177, Academy's 1950s party at their lodge, Sunday, Dec. 17th, from 4 to 9 p.m. We thank you, Academy, for inviting us to your party.

Our youth club presented a program after the meeting. This is how it went: Denisse Wuensche played a clarinet solo, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," and "Jolly Old St. Nicholas."

Piano Solo — "Jingle Bells" and "Silent Night," by Ginger Wuesnche Speech by Ellen Hejl Song: "Away in a Manger" by Ellen Hejl, Christe Mills, Christal, Mistie Marx and Leasha Mohel.

The youth club was told that Santa Claus had the flu and couldn't come to the party, so two of the ladies from the mother lodge passed out the presents.

We sang carols at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Monday, Dec. 11th, at 7 p.m.

We thank Mrs. Stalmach and Betty Wiesner for decorating the tree and Olin Biar and Bobby Wuensche for putting up the lights.

Our Christmas party was discussed. It was held Friday, Dec. 15th, and included gift exchange, according to age groups, and the Christmas supper and party were held afterward.

We made Christmas ornaments and they were judged. First place went to Jean Dorotik; second to Michelle Srubar; third to Keith

Special guests at the meeting were members of Lodge No. 155's youth club.

Nov. 26th our youth traveled to Austin and enjoyed roller skating at Play land.

SPJST — EDUCATION IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA (Submitted by Frances McDonald) The Czechs have very wisely made education a prominent feature of the great movement which they have so forcefully inaugurated to regain the losses of Bila Hora.

The elementary school system is superior in general efficiency to that of Austria; and is also comparable with the German system.

John Amos Komensky, the great educator, was a Czechoslovak. The school systems of France, Holland, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, the United States, Norway, and Japan were conceived and worked out in their most particulars by him, over 300 years ago.

The present elementary school sytsem of Czechoslovakia dates

from the year 1848. The compulsory period of school attendance is from 6 to 14 years of age. Required studies are the Czech language (reading and composition, with spelling and penmanship). Arithmetic, history, geography, natural history, elementary geometry, religion and gymnastics. They also teach domestic science for girls.

In Prague and elsewhere in the kingdom some model modern school buildings are found. The St. Adalbert school in Prague is one of the most scientifically constructed in Europe.

The sessions of the elementary schools in Czechoslovakia are longer than in the United States. Children in the first and second grades attend school in the morning from 8 to 10; in the third, fourth, and fifth grades, from 8 to 11, and the sixth, seventh and eighth grades, from 8 to 12. All grades are in school in the afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. They are allowed rest periods at the end of each hour.

There are schools for the training of ehers for boys at Prague, Plzen, Tiora, and Jicin; and for the nng of teacher, c girls in Prague, Kladno, Chrud, and Budejovice. By the American standards, the Cz e ch teachers are paid low salaries.

The secondary school system is much more largely under the control of the government. The gymnasia or classical schools prepare pupils for the university. The gymnasia has an eight-year course, but it does require three to four years of elementary school for admission. Anyone who wants to go to secondary schools must have the knowledge of the mother tongue — reading, spelling, composition, and penmanship, with the elements of number.

The education of girls is the weak point in the secondary school system in lazechoslovakia; this is largely due to the fact that the government entrusts most of this work to monastic institutions (pertaining to monasteries). There is an increasing number of private schools for girls belonging to the teaching orders of the Roman Catholic Church. These schools do not give secondary education in the modern sense of the word, and are declared not only unsuitable, but harmful.

22 There are numerous gymnasia and real schools and grades of technical schools. Some of these fit for the higher institutes of technology, but most of them prepare for industry and commerce.

The state controls 13 such schools the locality. In the larger towns, industrial schools that are maintained by the municipalities or by private associations. Many of these are located in small towns and are affiliated with the industries of the locality. In the larger towns, commercial and industrial instruction is given in what, are called continuation schools. Girls are given courses covering one year or more in sewing, dressmaking, art embroidery, decorative lace work, and painting on textiles. There are courses offered for boys which prepare for the other mechanical industries.

At the present time there are two universities in Prague with complete facilities for technology, law, medicine and philosophy.

Cyclamen, gloxinias and African violets also make excellent gifts.

These do best in an east window and should be watered from the bottom of the pot. Moon suggests allowing the soil to soak up as much water as possible, then removing any standing water. These plants flourish in cool temperatures and high humidity.

The ever-popular poinsettia is available in yellow this year, notes Moon. The poinsettia is sensitive to improper watering and should not be exposed to sudden temperature changes. It should be placed in a window with ample light. And for concerned parents, current research shows that poinsettias are not poisonous.

Po moderni silnic, kde na obouch stranach byla krasna pole s dobrou Urodou a prekrasne lesy. Pred jednim jsme videli i jelena, jak se pase na zelene traye. Koneene jsme na poledne dojeli do Humpolce, kde jsme zastavili na °bed. Nei jsme vystoupili z busu, tak jsem zahledl museum.

Nei naSi cestovatle dokoneili abed, ja jsem s_ Sel prohlednout museum, ktere me nejvice zajimalo. Museum bylo na teeth poschodich, dobre vypraveno vSelijakSimi pamatkami, nekteremi a tisic let starymi.

Po prohlidce jsme zase sedli na auto bus a uhaneli krasnou kopcovitou krajinou ku HaSkove Lipnici.

Kdy2 jsme tam dojeli, parkoviSte bylo v poll pod kopcem, na kterem ten stars/ zamek stoji a bylo tam tolik automobile, 2e jsme nesnaze najit parkovani pro nas bus. Koneene pro nas misto a my jsme se poLli k hradu asi pill mile vzdaleneho. VySli jsme na ten kopec a tam jsme uvideli tisice lidu okolo hradu. Lipnice je hrad ze sttedoveku. Poprve se ptipomina v race 1319 jako majetek pana Lichtenburka, kolem roku 1370 ptipadl kralovske korune. Behem let se vystfidalo nekolk maMehl, az v race 1436 ziskal hrad Mikuld6 Traka z Lipy, v letech 1634 ptipadla Lipnlce konfiskaci a Ferdinand II ji postoupil Matou govi 7.

NOTE ALSO THAT A SIMPLE PERIOD IS USED AFTER THE DATE. Proper nouns, that is, names of person, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations), titles of books, films, etc. take capitals. Ex.: Karel Dvoiak. Wilsonovo fladraii, Dunaj, Anglican, echy, Smetanova opera "Prodana nevesta" etc., and Nage iirosko-katolicka clrkev, Veleta slovanska podporujici jedno ta.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in

Punctuation marks are the same in Czech as in English.
