FROM `Ll L E EDITOR Recently, in a two-person con versation, one of our members, in a matter-of-fact sincere manner, said to this editor: "I just don't see how you can sit down and write an editorial every week for 52 weeks each year. Once I was an officer in our lodge and had to write a report once a month and it nearly drove me up the wall to do that!"

He is an old acquaintance and easily understood beeause both of us are alike — we had rather be doing something else than writing, however, when a job is waiting to be done then someone has to do it.

Surely, all of us have thoughts fleeting through our brain at an incredible rate per minute, however , when we sit down to put them on paper so many of them disappear or elude us and reappear at some other time, and such is the case with yours truly. This thought has crossed the mind many times — how much nicer and easier it would be if one could express what one wishes to convey in writing as easily and as simply as it is to do so in words used in conversation, and as effectively and beautifully! Alas, but the hand moves much more slowly writing than the lips do in talking and, very probably, it is better that this is so!

We can strike out what we write; we cannot call back the words we have said! How true. * * Last week we mentioned a number of things coming up in the near future and we will sketch them briefly for you again this week.

The Moravanka polka band ensemble from Brno, Czechoslovakia will begin a ten-stop tour of Texas with their first stop being in Ennis, Oct. 12th; West, Oct. 13th, etc.; the schedule has appeared in the Vestnik previously and also a Czech writeup by Brother K. Sicner.

Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas is Sunday, Oct. 15th, in Dallas. The program appeared in last week's issue, but lack of space this week prevented our reprinting it again.

The District VI fall meeting is scheduled on the same day, the 15th, at Inez, Texas.

The Czech Day at Lodge No. 88, Houston, is Sunday, Oct. 22nd. The Texas Fraternal Congress is the

27th, 28th, and 29th. As a coincidence, the 60th anniversary of the Czechoslovak declaration tof independence happens to be Oct. 28th.

Please keep the symposium in mind and mark your calendar. * * Saturday, Sept. 30th was the dr of the Publication Comrnitte meeting in Temple. The meeting was very cordial, rather brief, and the committee took care of their business with businesslike dispatch.

Our new SL Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, visited the meeting and listened to the discussions and met all of the PC members and from your editor's observation, he made a favorable impression on them by his sincere frankness and open mindedness plus his fraternal expression about his idea of what his new position really requires of him. Time was fleeting; the meeting adjourned about noon and then time rushed on for us to be able to attend the State Royalty at Seaton, beginning at 4:30 p.m. * State Royalty turned out to be very interesting and all the contestants are to be congratulated for their wonderful well - composed presentations. Quite frankly, there cannot be enough said about their good behavior and their display of fraternalism. Just keep it up, youth.

The event is well explained by SL President Morris, SYD Massey and DYC Klinkovsky in the Youth Section of this issue. * Greetings from County Waterford, Ireland, reached the editor's office from Mrs. John (Lil) Skrivanek and her daughter, Sharon Skrivanek, who are enjoying their vacation on the beautiful and colorful countryside. A safe and happy voyage home is wished to both of them. They are members of Lodge No. 39, Bryan.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT Dear Brothers and Sisters: On July 13th I had the distinct honor of being designated as your vice president of the Supreme Lodge by the Board of Directors of the SPJST. This appointment was effective on the first of October, 1978. Words cannot explain the determination I feel in accomplishing what must be done to enhance our already high standard.

I assure you that all decisions of this department will be made with the entire membership's benefit at heart.

I know many of you already, and those that I have not yet had this opportunity, I look forward to this meeting.

I feel extremely privileged in inheriting such a competent staff and with a smooth combination of old and new ideas we, together, will make our Society the envy of all other fraternal groups.

In conclusion, the honor and responsibility the SPJST has bestowed on me will be fulfilled with a sincere and diligent effort.

We are asking for all of our lodge members to help us in any way they can. We need gift items for the Christmas store. Sisters, please do some handwork or craft. Everyone is good at some type of craft or pastry making for the sweet shop. Start your favorite plants, now, for the greenhouse.

All of our officers and entertainment committee are working hard planning and hoping to get everyone's support and help.

Wednesday, October 11, 1978 CZECH DAY AT LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON OCTOBER 22, 1978 Dear Members: Our annual Czech Day Celebration will be on Sunday, Oct. 22nd Mr. Jim McConn, Mayor of the City of Houston, has issued a proclamation designating Oct. 22nd as Czech Day in Houston. We are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the first Czechoslovak Republic.

We, the officers and members of Lodge 88, extend an invitation to the officers of the Supreme Lodge and the editor and their families and all SPJST members and their friends.

The day starts with a good turkey dinner served from 11:30 on.

The prices are $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for children, including coffee or tea.

You can enjoy great entertainment in the Chandelier Ballroom from 12:30 to 2:30 when the Czech Concert orchestra and the Choral Club will perform. This is followed by our Dedication Program when 20 plaques will be given to dedicated members. Two English-speaking movies, one on Czechoslovakia and one on Yugoslavia, will be shown. I think you will enjoy these short movies, because they will show outstanding scenes in the two countries. All this entertainment is for you to enjoy free of charge.

At 5 p.m. a Parade of Czech Costumes starts the FREE dance with the popular Vrazels playing.

If you have a Czech costume, do wear it and be in the Grand March.

The Beseda dancers will perform during the first intermission.

We hope you plan to come to Lodge 88 Oct. 22nd and enjoy our Czech Day Celebration.

Fraternally yours, Tillie Helmcamp SPJST — LODGE-NO. 88, HOUSTON Our Friday night dance with music by the Texas Dutchmen had a very poor attendance. Could it be the guests have had enough polka tunes? Wanda Kennedy and her husband Noel, were in charge of the dance and Wanda's mother Ruth, and her husband, Seth, were on the spot helping take care of things.

Saturdays dance, with the wellliked Ray Jurecka orchestra was well attended -- almost a capacity

crowd. It is worth mentioning that approximately 90 percent of the guests were all nicely dressed and the ladies wore long gowns. Most of the people going out for a night of dancing, do dress up; it makes them feel good and it pleases us very much when you do this. Thanks ladies and gentlemen for giving prestige to our lodge. The dance was hosted by Faye Avetts (in charge), her husband, Dean, in the box office; son, Charles, taking care of the guests, and Mary Foreman at the door.

Brother John Vasula celebrated his birthday Saturday at the dance.

John was born in Ruel, Sept. 28th.

What year? Who knows! I guess that makes him 39 — everyone else is. His dear spouse, Bessie, was all smiles as they are on the threshold of their 36th wedding anniversary, in October. Happy birthday, John, and also happy anniversary!

At Ta,ble 47 a wedding anniversary took place, celebrating 16 years of married bliss for Dale and Trudy Chiney; they pledged their vows Oct. 6th,1962. Brothers and sisters of the couple and friends were present and to make it a double celebration, Trudy's brother, Ed Klimple, born Sept. 30th, was all smiles and happy while the group sang the birthday song. The table was loaded with goodies and a decorated cake, A table full of guests from Mason Park, Houston, were celebrating the birthday of Harvey Paschal, with cake and all kinds of goodies to mark the date of Sept. 30th for Harvey.

Evelyn Long, at another table, was all smiles as she celebrated her birthday, (which was Sept.

30th), with friends and especially with her husband, Virgil Long. To these celebrants we extend best wishes.

Sister Ruth Durham, with friend Virginia Smith, had a nice 13-day trip touring Mexico, spent one week in Guadalajara, and the rest of the time just went from place to place trying not to miss anything. They departed from Houston Sept. 10th and returned to their daily routine the 23rd.

Another wonderful trip of nine days was enjoyed by Rosalee and Tim Kostom taking the tour of "Autumn in New England." They flew from here to New York and

departed from the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and then toured by bus through New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, to view the beautiful autumn foliage; the pale yellow color of the birch trees, the rusty brown of the oaks blended in with the orange and bright crimson of the maples. They enjoyed every minute and the accommodations of the many ski resort inns, the ferry crossing at Lake Champlain, New York to Vermont, the National Historical Park and the Freedom Trail, which was a very enjoyable and interesting tour including the touring guests.

With sad hearts we bid farewell to Brother Rudy Lesak who passed away Sept. 27th, 1978, after being in St. Joseph's Hospital several times with a heart ailment. Rudy was retired, but active, with the help of his wife Agnes, in securing members for the SPJST. Rudy was a member of the Lodge 88 Choral Club and also of Hlahol Dramatic Club. He is survived by his wife, Agnes; one daughter, Linda Rivers; and three sons, David, Eugene and Lin. Funeral mass was held Friday, at 10 a.m., at St. Theresa Church and he was laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. May he rest in peace.

The entertainment committee mails out a regular monthly bulletin to members and anyone who wishes to receive one; all that is necessary for you to receive one is call or write your request to the lodge office and our secretary, Ellen Gill, or her assistant, Josephine Pflughaupt, will see to it that your bulletin is mailed to you. You will find detailed information about all activities during the month, with the dress code and especially take notice of dance reservations. The committee members go to all lengths to please the guests, so please, your cooperation will be greatly appreciated. If you make reservations, follow through, attend and, if not possible, call in and cancel your reservations, because someone is waiting in line to enjoy the evening's dancing.

Czech Day at Lodge 88 is always special. It is an all-day affair.

From 11 a.m. a home-baked turkey dinner will be served; adult plate, $2.50; for children, $1.50. The Choral- Group and Concert Orchestra will perform, followed by a

6 ----dedication program and a short movie of Czechoslovak and Yugoslavia will be shown. At 5 p.m. the parade of costumes followed by a FREE dance with music by the Vrazels, until 9 p.m. During the intermission the Lodge 88 Reseda circle will dance for you.

Wednesday, Oct. 25th, the Guy Lombardo orchestra will entertain our guests in the Chandelier Ballroom. The dance is completely sold out and if you are on the waiting list, you might be lucky and get a ticket if someone cancels out. This will be a gala evening in our Chandelier Ballroom.

Blue Room specials for October are Banana Daquaris and Margaritas for only 95c each. Come out and enjoy a refreshing drink served by our friendly bartender Nat. The Hlahol Dramatic Club is rehearsing the English play every Tuesday. The play will probably be presented early next ,year. It is a comedy and I am sure it will be worth seeing.

The meeting opened with the pledge of allegiance. Then everyone remained standing for a moment of silent tribute in memory of Brother Frank Mogonye.

After roll call of officers the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Afterward, all other reports were given and approved as read.

We were happy to have Virginia Lucille Miller, James Aryls Miller, Jennifer Lynn Prinz, Scott Alan Prinz, John Doyle Harkins, Melinda Kay Harkins, James Edward. This will be a covered dish supper. The lodge will furnish the drinks, bread, plates, cups, and silverware. Election of officers for 1979 will be held at this meeting, so we hope to see all of you then.

LODGE NO. 187, IUND ROCK Dear Members, The October meeting of Lodge 187 was held at the home of President and Mrs. Ray Woytek, Sunday, Oct. 1st.

Mark this date on your calendar -® Sunday, Feb. 11th, 1979. This is the date of our dedication day for our new lodge home. It was decided to purchase a Ford Futura (Fairmont) and have a drawing for it at the dedication. All members will be asked to sell tickets for this drawing. Nancy Vayo has generously offered to make a quilt to be auctioned off at the dedication.

Fraternally, Evelyn Salac Secretary - SPJST -CZECH AT ALVIN AND MEMORIAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE Czech classes are again in full

swing at Alvin Community College and Spring Branch Memorial Continuing Education College. The long summer of rest seemed to be what was needed to whet the appetites of the students. Both classes are progressing beautifully, and the members are overcoming the difficult "r, s, t, and d" sounds.

Spring Branch has 17 enrolled in its fifth term of study. Noteworthy is the fact that seven students are college graduates and really want to know the whys and wherefores of Czech expressions and grammar.

The class boasts of one judge and a member and several who travel all the way from Katy to attend classes.

The Alvin class, with its 20 registered, is meeting for the ninth term. It has eight ex-university students together with a medical doctor. It is interesting to note that one family of four has regis-

tered for the second term of study.

This family propect proves once again, that family experiences such as this tend to strengthen parentchildren ties.

The intensity of interest and determination shown in each class are factors which generate a lasting desire to continue studying Czech. May this characteristic prevail in all our Czech classes in Texas.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 15 held their regular meeting Wednesday night, Sept.

13th at the lodge hall with President Joe Zajicek presiding.

Roll call revealed all other officers present.

All present recited the pledge of allegiance.

Our visitor was Dan Balusek.

The secretary read the minutes and they were approved as read.

The treasurer's report was also accepted as read.

Reports by the rest of the committees were then given.

The stage in our lodge was remodeled plus two storage rooms were built and panelled and it sure looks nice.

Discussions were held on future plans for our lodge hall.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last meeting was held Sunday, Oct. 1st, at 2:30 p.m., with Vice President Ricky Benner presiding.

The minutes of the September meeting were read by Secretary Alvin Martinets, and there was a small correction. They were adopted.

On the sick list is Mrs. Henry Ba/usek and Mrs. George Montgomery.

We hope both of you will get well

soon. Sister Montgomery is a faithful worker here at our entertainments and we miss her.

The Bar, Entertainment, and Kitchen Committees gave their reports for the month of September.

Brother Glen Latham, our treasurer, gave the report on our Building Fund and Lodge 80's financial balance. He also reported that the money was put in escrow for the purchase of one and six-tenths acres of land to be used for our parking area.

It was also agreed at this meeting to let the Holland Volunteer Fire Department have the hall free for their benefit dance to be 'held Saturday, Oct. 21st from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The music will be by The Country Road band, and admission is $2.50 per person. We invite all our members and friends to come out and support this worthy cause. They have just purchased a new fire truck, so all the help you can give them will be appreciated.

Come, you may need their help some day!

Our annual Christmas party for our members was discussed. No definite date was set. Probably the first part of December. More details on this topic will take place later.

The meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m., followed by the happy hour and a delicious barbecue supper.

Get out those warm blankets and hang them out on the clothes line because you will be needing them soon.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 81 met Sunday, Oct. 2nd, at 2 p.m. for its regular meeting, with a good attendance.

President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order and asked Sister Aleene Zwahr to lead us in the pledge of allegiance to our flag.

All members remained standing in silence as a tribute to our three departed members: Brother Jerry Pekar, Brother Charlie Stupka and Brother Anton Pesak. May they rest in peace.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting. She also read a card of thanks from the Daniel Psencik family and the Anton Pesak family.

We were so happy to have Brother and Sister John Kolaja with us at the meeting again after being on the sick list for some time. Sister Emily Kolaja reported the following who are on the sick list: Brother John Blinka, Brother John Kalisek, Brother Valentine Kusy and Brother and Sister Tom Kolaja.

In my last report, I omitted (not intentionally) Sister Minnie McLurlin's name from the sick list so I hope at this writing all of you are on the road to recovery.

We welcome a new member, Brother Wesley Kure, to our lodge.

We hope you will continue to attend our meetings regularly, Wesley.

Brother Herbert Nowotny, a member of the Rules and Regulations Committee, reported the few changes the committee recommended. There was some discussion on one rule so this was tabled until the Nov. 12th meeting.

The president urged the members to attend the District V fall meeting Sunday, Oct. 8th at Houston.

Our annual meeting will be held Sunday, Nov. 12th at 1 p.m. This is when we elect officers, so please don't forget to come. Refund checks were handed out and the attendance prize was won by Brother Fritz Rogge.

We were so happy to have visitors — Brother and Sister Janecka from Rosenberg and Brother and Sister Simcik from Waco, Lodge 66.

We enjoyed your visit so much. Do come again.

Wednesday, October 11, 1978 There were 20 members present for the October meeting. Our guests were E. J. Seith, Michael Kostecka, Alvin Rauschhuber, Oscar Schmotz (was the guest of the youth club, and he spoke to the youth on fire prevention), and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Brem and family.

All reports were given and approved as read.

As usual, 'the youth of Lodge 6 have been very busy. They went to the rest home Sept. 16th, and are going on Oct. 11th, when they will dance the Reseda for the residents.

They are planning a Halloween party for Nov. 3rd, and are also working on Christmas items. Youth members having birthdays during October are Lanette Hykel and Terry Hykel. Kathy Brem brought the birthday cake.

Oct. 14 — The Texas Czech Playboys entertain from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Oct. 15 — The Texas State Fair is the place to be if you are thinking of beautiful ladies in the beautiful Czech attire, dancing, klobase, kolache, cold beverages, and many friends — it's Czech Day at the fair!

Oct. 18 — Lodge No. 84's monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Note that it is on a Wednesday; not the usual Monday and , if you spent Sunday at the fair, then no explanation is necessary.

Oct. 28 — The European Crossroad Shopping Center is the place to enjoy more Czechs (as well as other ethnic groups), participating on that day; dancing can be seen and food is available; we again ask for your help with the baking of kolache or any pastry to sell.

Oct. 31 — Halloween party and the youth will sponsor a smorgasbord with proceeds going to the mother lodge. As usual all youth members dress appropriately for the occasion for prizes, but this year adults are welcome to participate. Folks 18 years and older will compete for a chance to win a surprise prize, especially for this age group. I can't help but wonder if this one elder member, Brother Bill Gaiser will come on those silly stilts and try to convince the frightened little ones that he is straight from green giant country.

Nov. 4 — The Mikula Band is here at 2625 Floyd Street — music for dancing at its best.

Nov. 12 — Our Czechfest . . . and don't forget it! For dinner, turkey and dressing with all the trimmings, including dessert and drink for $2.75 adults and children up to 12 years can eat for $1.25.

Kitchen chairperson Buelah Horak asks for pastry. There must be so much talent among our membership (young and those not so young), whose beautiful crafts on handwork can be put to beautiful use — won't you think of this lodge and donate something. One such person is Sister Sophie Olsowski.

Fraternally yours, Alvin Nesuda Secretary - SPJST PAVELKA REUNION HELD IN LODGE NO. 35, ELK HALL The 1978 annual Pavelka reunion was held Sept. 3rd, at the Elk SPJST Hall, east of Waco, not far from the original Pavelka homestead.

There were 160 members and guests registered and more came later who did not register. This year only three of the five surviving children of Joseph and Marie Pavelka were able to attend the event. They were Jim Pavelka, Willie Pavelka and Minnie (Pavelka) Kubitza; missing included Edd Pavelka and Mary (Pavelka) Kubitza, both of whom we hope will be well enough to attend the next reunion.

A good time was enjoyed by all who came this year and we missed those who did not attend. There was an abundance of delicious food served for dinner and supper.

During the afternoon portion, a short meeting was held with Fred Kubitza, Jr., presiding. As in the past years silver dollars were awarded to the following members in attendance: Youngest — 5-week-old Stacy LeNet Bordovsky, daughter of Jimmy and Dale Pavelka Bordovsky.

Oldest lady — Minnie Pavelka Kubitza (82)

Oldest man — Jim Pavelka (86) Longest married couple — Willie and Viasta Pavelka (59 years) Newest married couple — Daryl and Peggy Pavelka Pursche (three weeks).

Then a head count of each branch of the Pavelka family members present was taken and the family of Minnie Pavelka Kubitin, had the most, 41 in all, and she was the lucky winner of another silver dollar.

A progressive report was given on the geneological records made and all members were asked to check over the books to make any corrections, changes, additiOns, etc.

Re-elected to serve for another year in 1979 were: Chairman, Fred Kubitza, Jr.; Secretary Nancy Kubitza of Waco, and Treasurer Gene Pavelka of Mart.

The Pavelka reunion will be held again at Elk SPJST Lodge on the first Sunday in September, 1979 —Labor Day weekend.

Following the meeting, afternoon activities for all ages consisted of social games, sack races, and a tugof-war, which was won this year by the Pavelka branch of the family, getting to keep the plaque until the next reunion.

A photographer was present to take group pictures of the different families; this was done for the first time in several years. The pictures always bring back memories of the past and present happenings.

To conclude the day a dance was held from 8 to 12 p.m. with Jerry Haisler's band providing the music.

The musicians of the Pavelka Orchestra of Robstown danced this time, instead of playing, this year and they enjoyed it immensely.

For those who did not attend this year, be sure to try to attend the next one because it's always a pleasure to meet and visit with all the relatives and friends on this once-a-year family affair.

Many of those who attended are SPJST members and some are active in their lodges over a large part of Texas.

Brunner of nond, Mo., and friends in Sarcoxie, Mo., and othn points of interest including Shepherd of the Hills, Fish Hatcheries at Roaring River, in Cassville, Mo., Eureka Springs, Ark.; also viewed the statue of Christ of the Ozarks, which stands seven stories high and weighs over a million pounds.

They also toured the German Castle on Big Rock Candy Mountain, which is known as the Inspiration Point in Arkansas. Then at Galena, Kans., several friends helped Mr. and Mrs. Mueller celebrate their wedding anniversary. In Little Rock, Ark., they visited Mrs. West's nephew, Dr. and Mrs. Fred Kadlubar and son and had supper with them. Their next stop was in Oil Trough, Ark., to visit Mr. Mueller's brother, Gilbert Mueller, and then on to Hot Springs, where they took a tour on a vehicle called the "White Duck" that took them on land and water on beautiful Lake Hamilton, near Hot Springs. At their final stop they enjoyed having lunch with the Mike Glatters of West and Evelyn Gauer in the Waco area Brother West is the president of Lodge 66, Waco, and the Muellers are the former owners of the Lone Star Tavern and Steak House in Waco. They are also members of Lodge 66.

EVENING HONORING SVATAVA JAKOBSON BIG SUCCESS The Czech Club and the University Czech Singers from the University of Texas in Austin prepared and presented a program in honor of Dr. Svatava Jakobson on the occasion of her retirement from the faculty of the Slavic Language Department at The University of Texas the evening of.Sept. 15th, 1978 at SPJST Lodge No. 29, near Taylor. A cake beautifully decorated with flowers and Czech dancers was presented to Dr. Jakobson, which was later shared by all those present, in addition to kolache, tea, and coffee. A dance was enjoyed in the evening by Svatava's favorite, the Vrazel Polka Band from Buckholts. All those present extended their best wishes to Dr. Jakobson for a happy and pleasant retirement among her friends in the Austin area and throughout Texas.

I recognized many of the university students from around the state from the previous four Annual Conferences of Teachers and Students of Czech held at Lodge 29, dating back to the first one in 1974. As before, they were all models of behavior and proper decorum. The parents of all these young people can stand proud of their sons and daughters. I was honored to have been invited and presented a handsome engraved plaque in the shape of the State of Texas to Dr. Jakobson on behalf of the SPJST Society in recognition of her many years of work on behalf of the Czech language and the Czech-Moravian people of Texas. Similar recognition was extended by Brother Jerry Valchar (SPJST Lodge 87, Temple) as president of the RVOS, along with all of the above-named individuals. Toward the end of the evening, Dr. Takobson took the microphone to express her sincere gratitude for the many courtesies and recognition extended her, for which she received a tremendous ovation. The dance and visiting lasted until the midnight hour. A jolly good time was had by all. —NAM. - SPJST CZECH SYMPOSIUM TO BE HELD IN TEMPLE The first of its kind, a symposium entitled "Czechs in Texas," is set to take place in Temple, Oct. 27th 29th. The symposium will get under way at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27th, with registration at the SPJST Supreme Lodge Building located at 520 N. Main St., after which there will be tours of the SPJST library, museum and archives. A short business meeting will be held and a speaker is scheduled for the afternoon. In case of an overflow crowd, arrangements have been made to accommodate the participants at Lodge 87 on Middle Road on the east side of Temple.

Saturday's activities will all take place in the main auditorium on the campus of Temple Junior College (Fine Arts Building), where there will be speakers knowledgeable in the fields of Czech history, folklore, sociology, genealogy and other Czech-related matters. Slides will be shown and panel discussions will be held on several important tonics. such as "Should Czech Eth-

nic Identity Be Preserved?" and "How Can It Be Preserved?"; also, "Is the Czech Language and Culture In Texas On The Decline?" and if so, "What, If Anything, Should Be Done About It?" Among the several prominent scholars, political figures, fraternal and religious leaders to be heard on Saturday are Antonin Robek from the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore of the Czechoslovak Academy of Science in Prague, Czechoslovakia; Robert L. Skrabanek from Texas A & M University, Professor Josef Rostinsky from Brown University, Bishop John L. Morkovsky of the Houston-Galveston Roman Catholic Diocese, Dr. Joe Malik of the University of Arizona, Rev. Henry Beseda from the Unity Brethren Church, State Representative Dan Kubiak from Rockdale, Nick Morris, SPJST President, Dr. Svatava Jakobson from the University of Texas at Austin, and several other prominent scholars and figures who are specialists in a particular field.

Those attending the symposium will be special guests at a dance at Star Hall in Seaton, where the Rhein Steins of Cameron will be playing. Sunday's activies will get under way also at .Lodge 47 (Star Hall) beginning with a noon luncheon and a program at 2, including folk singing, Beseda dancers, solo musicians, a dramatic group from Houston, the Seaton Brass Band and Chorus, the singing Marusak Family from Ennis, Gil Baca of Fayetteville, and several others. All those having a Czech costume are urged to wear it.

The symposium is being organized and sponsored by Texas A&M University and College Station, with Dr. Clint Machann as the director.

The public is invited. Pre-registration will be $3 for adults for all three days, and $1 for school-age children. Registration the day of the conference will 'be $4 for adults and $1.50 for school children. STATE ROYALTY A SUCCESS Dear Members: Following this report Sister Massey has a complete run-down of the recent State Royalty competition held at Lodge 47, Seaton, on Sept. 30th. I would merely like to make a few observations and comments. As I stated on that occasion, it hasn't been too long ago that we had the competition for State Queen only, and it was not until a few years ago that we added the competition for the king.

I think that this addition has enhanced this particular event and expanded it to include duchesses for the queens and dukes for the kings. This year, we added another new innovation in the form of crowns for the king and duke and

I have been attending these royalty competitions , since early 1963, first for several years as editor, and since 1969 as president and head of the Youth Department.

Every year on this occasion I have sat in the audience and, in my own mind, rated the performers. Sometimes the judges' decisions came out the way I would have judged them, and sometimes they did not.

The point I wish to make is that this year I found myself unable to rank either the kings or queens — they were all simply that good.

They were all first-place winners, as far as I'm concerned. The polish and competence of all the candidates was the best that I have ever seen and all of them deserve our appreciation and gratitude for not only the manner in which they presented their topics, but the contents and meaning of their speeches. They demonstrated that they had researched well and had thought out their topics thoroughly.

I was personally proud of each and everyone of them and I extended

This marks more or less the end of one phase of our youth activities, but remember that another phase will be starting. For example, being an active full-right member of the SPJST on or by Oct. 31st of this year and attending a majority of the youth. club meetings between that time and May 31st is necessary in order to qualify for being eligible to attend camp next summer, So you see, our youth program is an on-going program. You have done a good job all year, so keep up the good work.

From The State Youth Dirrior RE-CAP OF STATE. ROYALTY Once again we can look back to another special day in the SPJST. State Royalty was a day to remember for all the contestants and the parents, relatives and friends in the audience. We can sincerely say to each of the seven girls and six boys who competed, "Well done!" It is not easy to face an audience, give a speech using a microphone and know you are being judged, but these boys and girls made us all proud of them.

Each district was well represented and you should feel pride in the king and queen who represented your district.

If you were not present at the Royalty competition held Sept. 30th at Seaton Star Hall, you missed hearing how the youth in our Society feel about the future of our country and our Society. If this was an example of how the boys and girls of this country really feel,

We are very proud of all the boys and girls on our youth clubs, but especially when I see them at our YADs and Royalties. They are a very special group and they deserve all the considerations given them.

I know there are times we all get a little aggravated with them. Their energy and questions can get on our nerves, but that is part of growing up. Right at this time they need our love, understanding and someone to listen.

Even though the dukes and duchesses are not judged, they serve a special place in our Royal Court. They are learning, too, and aren't they cute in their pretty

dresses and handsome in their little suits?! Just as the boys and girls are the future of our Society, so are the dukes and duchesses the future of our Royalty competition.

We owe Lodge No. 47, Seaton, a special thanks for the fine job they did in hosting the Royalty this year. They really worked at making the day nice, the decorations were beautiful and they were very cordial to everyone attending.

Several leaders suggested that they had not been inside our Supreme Lodge Building and had not seen the museum and asked if this was possible, so we combined it with a skating party for the youth and adults.

The skating will begin at 5 p.m. and continue until 7 p.m. Door prizes will be given and all members will be allowed free admission to skate and the youth members will be allowed to bring a visitor.

Let us all remember that this Tour and Skate Day is Sunday, Oct. 15th, starting at the Supreme Lodge Building at 4 p.m. and ending at about 7:15 p.m. at Skate Haven on North 31st Street just north of Temple High School. We hope that most of you will be able to attend this last district activity for 1978 and see all of your friends from the other lodges. Make plans to be there!

I wish to congratulate our new State Queen Tena Urbanek from Lodge 66, Waco, and District III, and our new State King Donnie Lueck. Donnie is from Lodge 177 Academy and is from District III, so we again were privileged to have a State Royalty winner. I would also wish to congratulate all of the State Royalty contestants because they were all district winners and were all very good with their presentations. I am happy that I did not have to decide who the winners were because they all did an excellent job. The cool weather seems pleasant after a long hot and dry summer, but it won't be long before we may say it is too cold.

The best part of it is that the seasons don't last long and we have weather changes all the time. I think the weather is a topic that is discussed the most.

LODGE NO. 142, HOUSTON Dear Readers, Our regular monthly youth club meeting was held Friday night, Sept. 29th. It was called to order

Curtis Kieschnick led us in the pledge of allegiance. Secretary William. Janik read the minutes of our last meeting, and I gave the treasurer's report.

Visitors at our meeting were Alice Pavlicek, Terry Pozyski, Mrs. Kieschnick, Mrs. Jochen, Mrs. Janik and Mrs. Pavlicek.

Frankie Pavlicek's name was drawn from the capsule bowl and he won the attendance prize for September. Bryon Kieschnick's name was drawn for October, but he was not present.

Our youth leader, Mrs. Tumis, again discussed the cake sale which we will have at our District V meeting. She also told us to continue to save newspaper for our paper drive.

Poems about Halloween were read and a picture contest was held. I won second place with my picture. Marcy Dorotik won first place and Jean Dorotik received third place; prizes were given.

We worked on craft, making life saver dolls, and it was fun.

We then welcomed District VI Youth Counselor Elsie Brdecka, and a new member, Tammy Krpec; we were glad to have them.

We discussed old and new business topics. Then we had a Halloween program and contest. The winners of the contest were: Ages 6-9: Jean Dorotik, 3rd; Michelle Srubar, 2nd; Marcy Dorotik, 1st.

EXPRESSION OF -1"t7MPATIIY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 29, Taylor, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, AUGUST HRANICKY, age 88, of Taylor, who died in Austin, recently.

Brother Hranicky was born July 7th, 1890 at Schulenburg. He was a retired farmer and rancher and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and of the SPJST. Rosary was recited at Condra Funeral Home in Taylor. Funeral sermices were conducted at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Desmond Murphy officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary Hranicky of Taylor; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Werchan _ of Austin; three sisters, Mrs. S. P. Hill of San Antonio, Mrs. Albina Bednore of Yorktown and Mrs. Vlasta Barton of Corpus Christi; three brothers, Charlie Hranicky of Taylor; John Hranicky of Orange Grove and Willie Hranicky of Houston; and two grandchildren.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

FRANCES GERLICH, age 83, of West, who died early Friday, Sept. 22, 1978, in West Community Hospital.

Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Saturday, at Kotch Funeral Home Chapel in West.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, at Kotch Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. George Doskocil officiating. Interment followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, West.

Sister Gerlich was born in Czechoslovakia, but lived in New York for 3f) years. Resolution Committee Jan Vaeolik Frank J. Cocek SPJST — RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of the Novy Tabor SPJST Lodge No. 17, at Caldwell, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family on the death of your husband, father, grandfather, and our beloved lodge member, WILLIE H. TRCALEK, who died suddenly on Tuesday, July 18, 1978, in the T. L. Goodnight Memorial Hospital in Caldwell, after suffering a heart attack.

Brother "Bill" was born Jan. 2nd, 1929, in New Tabor in Burleson County. His parents were Boleslav Karel (B. K.) and Annie Vavra Trcalek. His entire lifetime was spent on the same farm near Caldwell.

He was a plant manager for

Nagel Manufacturing Co. in Caldwell for over 25 years. He also owned and operated the New Tabor Store for the last ten years. He was currently serving as president of the New Tabor SPJST Lodge No. 17 and was a past District I president. He was also a member of the Deanville Gun Club and the New Tabor Brethren Church.

On April 8th, 1950, he married Miss Gladys Masar in Caldwell.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gladys M. Trcalek of Caldwell; four daughters, Mrs. Donnie (Betty) Suehs, youth leader of Lodge No. 17; Carol Ann Trcalek, Susan Trealek and Donna Trcalek, currently the SPJST State Queen, all of Caldwell; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. George (Esther) Zavodny of Caldwell; and one brother, Ben F. Trcalek, District 1 sales representative, of Caldwell.

Pallbearers were Melvin Skrabanek, Clint Luksa, Lawrence Vavra, Ben Trcalek, Jr., George Zavodny, Jr., Jerry Urbanovsky, Bill Leach and Ray Downy.

Funeral services were held July 20th, 1978, with the Rev. Henry Beseda, pastor of the Brethren Church and Brother Nick A. Morris of Temple officiating. Interment was at the New Tabor Cemetery.
