FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK There are quite a number of things we need to touch on in this issue and the attempt to do so will be made with those events in the future first and those in the past next.

Events in the future are here listed as they are to occur in order by dates, successively.

Sunday, October Sth is the District V meeting at Lodge Stefanik No. 142, in Houston; they are hoping to have a nice turnout, so let us, as fraternalists, do our utmost to help them out in their effort.

Then there are a few dates in quick succession which occur in the following weeks and here they are: The Moravanka 18-piece brass band direct from Brno, Czechoslovakia will appear in Texas as follows: Oct. 12th, in Ennis; Oct. 13th, in West; Oct. 14th, in Dallas; Oct. 15th. in Burleson; Oct. 17th. in Elgin, etc. You have seen the ads in the Vestnik and we hope you saved one of them.

We especially call your attention to Oct. 15th, when the Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas will occur. This annual event marks the 38th Czech Day to be conducted at this fair and we should be proud that the Texas citizens of CzechMoravian descent have been so honored for so many consecutive years here in our big state. Give your support to them on this once-a-year day. The program is in this issue so please read it.

The same date, Sunday, Oct. 15th is the District VI meeting, in Inez, Texas, with Lodge No. 143, Inez, and Lodge No. 32, Victoria, serving as host and co-host lodges, so, you see, even though fall • is in the air, the weekends are filled with events in our SPJST, and in Czech-associated affairs.

It seems that no matter where you go, all of our SPJST members (regardless of national background or origin), always find a way to have an enjoyable time, whether it be a meeting, YAD, dance, domino game, etc., and actually, that is what getting along with each other is all about; in other words,

fraternalism, i.e., no discussion of religion, politics, national origin, etc., just downright fraternal and sincere fellowship with fellow members. If you allow personal ego, greed, priority to come into the picture, you have lost the purpose of what SPJST is all about.

The weekend of Oct. 21st, 22nd, and 23rd (Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) are days that deal with just what we have mentioned above the TFC (Texas Fraternal Congress) at the Baker Hotel in Dallas. There will be quite a number of people in various fraternal organizations meeting there and exchanging views about theirl thoughts and aspects of the activities of their societies. May all of their deliberations be for the future benefit of all concerned.

Following that is the weekend of Oct. 27th, 28th, and 29th. The date of the Czech Symposium to be held in Temple. The schedule of events is outlined on page 15, as outlined by Dr. Clint Machann and sent in by Brother Nick A. Morris.

In a recent telephone conversation with Dr. Machann, your editor senses that he and Prof. James Mendl of Austin expect something rather far-reaching and definite to be resolved at this symposium and we have promised them all the aid we can provide in this respect.

Let us keep in mind that much thought, time, effort, etc, has been put into this symposium by Dr. Machann, Profs. James Mendl, Chervenka, and others and is being supported by various endowments and, therefore, we should try to give this effort all the support that we can.

At this point we thought that we had run the schedule . to a standstill, however, we find that Sunday, Nov. 5th is the District VII fall meeting at New Braunfels with Lodge No. 185 as host and so, there you are! * * Last week we mentioned that we had attended the appreciation evening honoring Dr. Svatava Jakobson on her retirement. The evening was enjoyable and she will be taking part in the symposium at the end of this month. * * Sunday, Sept. 24th, we attended

the District III meeting in Elk at Lodge No. 35. It was a pleasant day spent among true fraternalists and pictures appear in this issue. Gary Abbott and his group did a very nice job of entertaining the members present and they certainly are to be congratulated for their kind efforts. They are members of Lodge No. 178, Longview. * * Whole life insurance policies give lifelong protection to their owners and beneficiaries, as long as the premiums are paid — and whole life builds savings called "cash value." For these reasons, it costs more at first than does term life insurance, which has only a limited protection time — however, the cost on whole life insurance does not increase, as long as the premiums are paid on time.

NEWSBRIEFS Ed J. Hajek, 90, died Friday, Sept. 22nd at Colonial Nursing Home in Schulenburg. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday from St. Rose Catholic Church, with Father Roger Robbins officiating. Interment was in St. Rose Catholic Cemetery. Brother Hajek was a longtime member of the SPJST Society.

There will be an old-fashioned sing-song in the afternoon. * * Mr. and Mrs. Wade Allen Owens of Medaryville, Indiana, are the proud parents of a baby boy, James Douglas, born Aug. 7th. I want to say to many of you that I was away for three weeks.

I left Houston Sept. 4th, and arrived in Prague, Czechoslovakia., Sept. 5th. I returned Sept. 25th at midnight. I learned so much that I didn't know. After I get all my notes together I will tell you about the wonderful time I had; it was great. There is so much to see that three weeks just are not enough time to see it all.

Let's try to meet our quota by the time we have our District V meeting; this would be a wonderful report to give.

LODGE NO. 176, HOUSTON NORTHWEST Lodge No. 176 Houston Northwest held its monthly meeting Sept. 19th at Charlie's Hamburger Joint, 1651 Blalock, in Spring Branch. Sister Blumrick reported on discussions she had had concerning a location for a permanent lodge home. Sites near Brookshire and near Brittmore Road were discussed at length, the latter site being the most desirable one. Sister Blumrick was directed to continue her inquiries into the matter; the possibility of starting a social night was also discussed.

The next meeting of the lodge will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18th at Charlie's, 1651 Blalock, Spring Branch. Come out early and enjoy one of Charlie's delicious hamburgers.

District V will have its fall district meeting on Oct. 8th, at Stefanik Lodge No. 142, Houston, beginning with a delicious barbecued dinner at 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. when the meeting will begin.

We would like to see all the lodges in the district represented and I also want to mention that pastry from District V lodge members would be very much appreciated.

Benefits from the pastry will go to the youth of Lodge 142.

Do come to the meeting because Lodge 142 would really appreciate your presence. After all, they will be working hard to make it a good day for all of us.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON

Our Friday night dance, Sept. 22, with music by Nick Navarro, which is always a dress-up affair was fairly well attended. Saturday, Sept.

23rd, with the Vrazels, the Chandelier Ballroom was filled to capacity with polka-loving guests and they all danced to their hearts' content, keeping up with the lively tunes. These two dances were hosted by (Friday) Milert Antrich, in charge, and his wife Evelyn, with Stacy Kocich (both ladies were dressed beautifully, as usual) greeting the guests and Benny Kocich was busy on the floor. Saturday, Royal Waxnasch had charge of the dance and his wife, Laura, was at the door; Almeda Bravenee served in the box office. Both sisters held up our tradition and were dressed formally to suit any roving eye. Franklin Bravenec and Royal were kept busy up to 10 o'clock seating the guests.

Sister Pearl Ha,nka has her father, Mr. Lindemann, in Heights Hospital (since Sept. 17th). Mr. Lindemann had a stroke and is confined to Room 279. It is not certain how long he will remain in the hospital but Pearl spends most of her time with her father. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Sister Clara Jecmenek is in Heights Hospital, Rm. 243. She had an acute attack of appendicitis and had immediate surgery; that was Wednesday, Sept. 17th. It really was a surprise, because Clara always is full of pep and never complains. Get well soon, Clara!

Rudy Lesak again spent some time in St. Joseph Hospital and just how long he will have to stay this time is not known. Dear Rudy has been in the hospital several times lately; get well soon!

Dear Members and Friends: September 10th we had our regular meeting at 3:30 p.m. We discussed the success of our garage and bake sale held at Mr. and Mrs. Vytopil's house Sept. 7-9. I want to thank all of the members for their donations and help during the sale, especially Mrs. Vytopil, Mrs. Quitta, Mrs. Billie Wentrcek, and Mary Ann Novosad. Their time and trouble was greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank the non-member friends of the lodge who donated to our sale. We also discussed our Christmas party which will be held after our Dec. 10th meeting. We will have the dinner catered and we will have a dance afterward. The November meeting will not be held on the scheduled second Sunday, but instead it will be held Nov. 5th, which is the first Sunday in the month. There is a conflicting event for the regularly scheduled meeting and since November is our election month, we want to have as many members as possible attend.

The special program for our October meeting which will be held Oct. 8th is a presentation given by the Bryan Fire Department on fire prevention. Recognized as the oldest present was John Maier, 82, of Sealy; the youngest was Michelle Robbins of Alvin, 13 months old. Newlyweds were Mr. and Mrs. David Sell of Rosenberg, 10 1/2 months. Married the longest were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Krupula of Bellville, 51 years. Traveling the farthest were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Surovik of Mertens, approximately 188 miles. All were presented gifts.

The majority voted to have the 1979 reunion at Nelsonville SPJST Hall, in Nelsonville, on the 3rd Sunday in September, 1979. The meeting closed with the Lord's Prayer.

Members came from Caldwell, Houston, Freeport, New Ulm, Bellville, Sealy, College Station, Bryan, Rosenberg, East Bernard, Hutto, Brenham and Mertens.

Everyone had a good time visiting, renewing, and making new acquaintances. We missed those who didn't come and hope all can be present next year.

Fraternally, Lillian Beasley Secretary Treasurer - SPJST — LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Members and Friends: The regular monthly lodge meeting was held Sunday, Sept. 17th, with 24 members and one visitor present.

President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. and Patty Tydlacka, flag bearer, led us in the pledge to the flag. Secretary Olga Nimtz called the roll of officers and there were nine present. She also read the minutes of the August meeting. They were approved as read. Other reports which were accepted were the treasurer's report and the financial secretary's report.

Several items of business were discussed and voted upon. Also eight new members were admitted to lodge membership. They are: Keith Kubena, Frank, John, Linda, and Mary Elizabeth Horak, also Louis Dussetschleger, Deborah Dussetschleger and Louis Dussetschleger, Jr. We do welcome you all!

Fraternally, Magdalene Iselt Reporter - SPJST — LODGE NO. 133, SAN ANTONIO TO CELEBRATE 61st ANNIV. Dear Members: Lodge 133 of San Antonio will celebrate its 61st anniversary with a party. The party will be held Sunday, Oct. 15th, at the new Navajo Building, located at Comanche Park on Rigsby Ave., in San Antonio.

The party will begin at 2 p.m.; dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. slides of Czechoslovakia and Poland will be shown, plus tables will be set up for those wishing to entertain themselves with Taroky and dominoe games.

Dinner will consist of one-half a barbecued chicken with all the trimmings and homemade kolache, strudel, etc. All refreshments will be free while it lasts. The price for adults will be $2.75 and for children $1.50 (under 12 years of age).

Do these names have meaning for you? * * We, members of University of Houston's Professor Teofil Halama's Czech classes at SPJST Lodge 88, are not only improving our knowledge of the Czech language but are strengthening our ancestral links with the rich beauty of Czech culture.

For a 5th consecutive year, Czech classes are being offered at Lodge 88. In eight, 90-minute lessons, the basic grammar of the language is reviewed, interspersed with highlights of Czech history and culture.

The classes are always lively and different media and techniques are used to enrich the learning experiences. Slides of Czechoslovakia have been shown with narratives by students from the University of Houston who have studied there for the summer. Taped Czech music lifts everyone's spirits. The classes are conducted in such a manner that there is close cooperation and feedback concerning what the students want to learn from the classes and what methods are most helpful to them.

Three levels of Czech are being taught this year. A Beginners' class is held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays, while an Intermediate class follows it on the same evening from 7 to 8:30, and a Conversational class closes the evening from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

For some, these classes prove to be an opening door into the world of their cultural heritage. Perhaps they will want to learn more. At the University of Houston, the Sundry School Czech classes are being taught by Professor Halama. On Tuesday evenings, 5:30 to 7, Beginning Conversational Czech is held and from 7 to 8:30 Intermediate Czech is taught. The first classes begin on Oct. 10th. For enrollment information call Professor Halama at 868-3357, since the regular registration date has passed.

Also there is some consideration being given to having the Czech classes at SPJST Lodge No. 88 continued during November and December. The classes would be on Mondays as usual with the Be-

Brother Alois Dressler and Sister Agnes Dressler of Lodge 133 LODGE NO. 133, SAN ANTONIO Brother Alois Dressler and his wonderful wife, Sister Agnes Dressler, are members of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio.

Sister Agnes was born in Gonzales County, March 12, 1893; her parents were Vincent and Anna Valicek who came from Czechoslovakia. Sister Agnes is our remaining charter member of Lodge No. 133. She came to live in San Antonio in 1912. She was employed here until she met Brother Alois Dressler, whom she married on March 18th, 1922.

Brother Alois Dressler transferred to Lodge 133 in 1927 from El Campo.

He was born in Franstat (Moravia) in Czechoslovakia, May 30, 1891.

His parents were Leopold and Marie Dressler, Brother Alois, at the age of 21, arrived in America, at Galveston, March 5, 1912. He was educated in Czechoslovakia as a plumber and a tinsmith. Brother Dressler's summary of his life was just like reading a history book. I asked him for reasons why he left his homeland, Czechoslovakia, and he smiled and said that he was 21 years old at that time, when everyone was obligated to serve three years in the army, and he just couldn't see that because, at that time, Czechoslovakia was a part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. His parents were able to get their visas, but Brother Alois

couldn't get his since he was already registered with the army and was expected to be called any day, so he took the only way out.

Early one cold morning in the year 1912, with everything under a cover of snow, he left Frenstat, taking back roads, and finally reached the city of Frankfurt, Germany.

His mother and father met him in Frankfurt later, and they all sailed to America.

Their first residence was in El Campo. Brother Alois wanted to join the Army even before America was in the first world war, but he was not a citizen of the U.S, and the army would not take him.

Finally, in the early part of 1918, Congress passed a law that cases such as Brother Alois would be eligible to serve in the Armed Forces. Brother Alois was accepted in the Army in 1918 and served until 1919. He was stationed at Camp Travis, San Antonio. Although he volunteered for overseas duty, his request was not granted. After discharge he went back to El Campo, but stayed only a short time. He returned to San Antonio where he worked as a decorator and paperhanger.

I asked him how he met his wife, and he pointed to the door on the porch where we were sitting, and said, "Right there; I met her at that door." I asked him to explain to me how it happened and he said that he was told that a Mr. Va.licek was interested in decorating one of his rooms, so one Sunday morning Brother Alois thought he would go there and check it out. He did, and Sister Agnes opened the door and introduced herself, from that day on, history was made. They married on March 18, 1922, and settled in the same house, and today they are still living in that same house.

Brother Dressler has always been very active in our Lodge 133. He was a sales representative for many years. He was also very active in the Sokol. He was appointed Athletic Instructor for the Southwestern District in Texas. He organized the Sokol Club in Floresville, also in Placedo, and Junction. He was also a member of the local Slavonic Mutual (SVPS) where he held the position of secretary for 24 years.

It is indeed a privilege and honor to be associated with such great people as Brother Alois and Sister

I asked Brother Alois if he could tell me what he felt was the most meaningful moment of his life. He looked at me and said in all sincerity, that after being in America for a short time he sensed something much different than in the old country; he realized what freedom really meant. LODGE NO. 79, CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Members: A rally and barbecue sale will be held Saturday, Oct. 28th, with the Pavelka, Orchestra from Robstown playing for the dance.

All the proceeds will go to the building fund. The committee consists of Brother Roy Peal, chmn., Sister Mildred and Brother Jerry Elzner and Brother Frank Veselka.

Brother Anton Elzner promised to donate one of his many calves for the picnic. He is one of the prominent and successful farmers and cattle raisers in the Taft community and also a Sokol charter member since 1929, and a charter member of SPJST Lodge No. 79. The

audience gave him a big round of applause.

FEATURES CZECH SYMPOSIUM TO BE HELD IN TEMPLE The first of its kind, a symposium entitled "Czechs in Texas," is set to take place in Temple, Oct. 27th 29th. The symposium will get under way at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27th, with registration at the SPJST Supreme Lodge Building located at 520 N. Main St., after which there will be tours of the SPJST library, museum and archives. A short business meeting will be held and a speaker is scheduled for the afternoon. In case of an overflow crowd, arrangements have been made to accommodate the participants at Lodge 87 on Middle Road on the east side of Temple.

Saturday's activities will all take place in the main auditorium on the campus of Temple Junior College (Fine Arts Building), where there will be speakers knowledgeable in the fields of Czech history, folklore, sociology, genealogy and other Czech-related matters. Slides will be shown and panel discussions will be held on several important topics, such as "Should Czech Ethnic Identity Be Preserved?" and "How Can It Be Preserved?"; also, "Is the Czech Language and Culture In Texas On The Decline?" and if so, "What, If Anything, Should Be Done About It?" Among the several prominent scholars, political figures, fraternal and religious leaders to be heard on Saturday are Antonin Robek from the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore of the Czechoslovak Academy of Science in Prague, Czechoslovakia; Robert L. Skrabanek from Texas A & M University, Professor Josef Rostinsky from Brown University, Bishop John L. Morkovsky of the Houston-Galveston Roman Catholic Diocese, Dr. Joe Malik of the University of Arizona, Rev. Henry Beseda from the Unity Brethren Church, State Representative Dan Kubiak from Rockdale, Nick Morris, SPJST President, Dr. Svatava Jakobson from the University of Texas at Austin, and several other prominent scholars and figures who are specialists in a particular field.

Those attending the symposium will be special guests at a dance at Star Hall in Seaton, where the Rhein Steins of Cameron will be playing. Sunday's activies will get

under way also at Lodge 47 (Star Hall) beginning with a noon luncheon and a program at 2, including folk singing, Beseda dancers, solo musicians, a dramatic group from Houston, the Seaton Brass Band and Chorus, the singing Marusak Family from Ennis, Gil Baca of Fayetteville, and several others: All those having a Czech costume are urged to wear it.

The symposium is being organized and sponsored by Texas A&M University and College Station, with Dr. Clint Machann as the director.

The public is invited. Pre-registration will be $3 for adults for all three days, and $1 for school-age children. Registration the day of the conference will be $4 for adults and $1.50 for school children. -- SPJST — TECH FACULTY MEMBER DISCUSSES SLAVIC LANGUAGES Probably the most popular foreign language in the United States is Spanish; yet scientists and educators agree that other major languages are on the upswing.

Dr. John P. Kasik, new faculty member at Texas Tech in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages, is helping the university to meet changing and developing demands. His task is to expand the Russian and Czech programs.

According to Kasik, there is a special potential for Czech and a general one for Russian. "Major portions of Texas' population are of Qech descent, especially in the area between Houston and Austin," he said. "Our observations and experiences indicate that we can serve students from this region as well as other parts of the nation."

Russian gains its importance from contributions the Soviet Union is increasingly making in the fields of science and medicine and from intensifying trade relations.

Today much scientific literature is published in Russian, challenging students and researchers educated in traditional patterns.

DR. JOHN P. KASIK Kasik explained that Texas Tech has about 50 students in Russian and the department anticipates an increasing enrollment. The planning frame justifies close cooperation with other departments, so Kasik has initiated an interdisciplinary program in Russian Studies.

"Most students in our program major in a field of science or medicine, but a common characteristic for all of them is strong intellectual motivation and dedication."

Kasik, born in Czechoslovakia, came to the United States in 1970.

He received an undergraduate degree in German from the University of New Hampshire in 1973. A year later he received a master's degree in Russian and in 1978 he completed the Ph.D. with a dissertation on Slavic languages and literatures. Both postgraduate degrees were awarded by Brown University.

CZECH TAUGHT AT BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE Beginning Oct. 12th the Czech language course will be offered at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson. This will be a 24-hour course.

16 HELEN ZICH OUTLIVES POLICY The 38th person in the SPJST to outlive the actuarial table of their life insurance policy is Sister Helen Zich of Fort Worth and member of. Lodge 92 in that city.

She was recently presented a check in the amount of the face value of her endowed certificates by her son and president of Lodge 92, Brother Carl Zich, and District III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik.

Sister Zich makes her home with her daughter, Mary, who is married to Charles A. Pulliam and who resides at 2415 Ryan Place Dr., in Fort Worth.

Sister Zich was born Helen Kotas in Bystra, Province of Moravia in Czechoslovakia, on Aug. 13th, 1882.

She came to America in 1907, having married Ladislav Zich, a taylor by trade, in Moravia. After landing in Galveston, the couple resided in Hillsboro, later in Weatherford, and finally Fort Worth. Mr. Zich found employment with Fishburn's Cleaners in Fort Worth and later had his own tailoring business. He died on Nov. 11th, 1922, at the age of 42. He had been a member of the SPJST since shortly after his arrival in the U.S. Sister Zich became a member of the SPJST and Lodge 92 in Fort Worth at age 53, on June 5th, 1935.

Sister Zich and her husband had four daughters and one son, all members of SPJST Lodge No. 92, as follows: the late Mrs. John (Annie) Chaloupka, Mrs. Charles A. (Mary) Pulliam, Mrs. Frank J. (Sophie) Blazek, Mrs. Reginald M. (Amelia) Stovall, and one son, Carl W. Zich.

Sister Zich has nine grandchildren as follows: Mrs. Robert P. (Linda) Guminski, Mrs. Tom H. (Carol) Everett, Miss Marshal Stov_ all, Paul A. Pulliam, John W. Chaloupka, Jr., Shirley Zich, Peggy Stovall, Franklin J. Chaloupka, Mrs. Sammy R. (Nancy) Sanders.

Sister Zich has seven greatgrandchildren as follows: Richard and Stephanie Sanders, Whitney Chaloupka, Clay Pulliam, David Guminski, Frank J. Chaloupka, Jr., and Ashley Chaloupka.

Sister Zich is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Altar Society, SPJST Women's Circle, Sokol Friendship Club, and a social member of the KJZT. A son_in-law, Reginald (Sharkey) Stovall, was a Fort Worth City Councilman for several years and

Now that school has begun again, the summer vacations are over and cooler weather is here, I hope you boys and girls will make an extra effort to attend the SPJST Youth Club meetings. It is very disappointing to find out in May that you need a few more meetings to be eligible to participate in YAD and attend camp. Now is the time to plan for next summer.

This is really the fun time of the year coming up. First, there is Halloween the last of October and nearly all the youth clubs are planning something special. November brings thoughts and plans for Thanksgiving and the big football games. Then of course, in December are the wonderful Christmas programs and parties. Following close are plans for the New Year, then the 'pretty, fun Valentine parties. So you see, even though summer vacations are over, there are lots of plans for the winter

LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Readers, The Robstown Youth Club held their regular monthly meeting Sept. 16th. The meeting was called to order by President Brent Hrncir, at 2 p.m.

The minutes were then read and approved. Treasurer's report was read and we now have approximately $245 in the bank. Past activities were talked about and reports given on them.

New business was talked about and plans for future activities were made. Oct. 7th the club plans to take a trip to Harlingen to see the Confederate Air Force show.

The bus will take the members and their guests.

Oct. 21st the club plans to have a bake sale at one of the local super markets.

Plans for Halloween were also made but will be discussed in detail later.

The roll was called at this time and it showed that 30 youth club members and three guests were present.

Our meeting was then adjourned and a birthday party was held for the persons who have September birthdays.

LODGE NO. 18, ELGIN Dear Members, Lodge No. 18 Youth Club held their monthly meeting Sept. 20th.

President Carolyn Ging called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Cecilia King led us in the pledge of allegiance to the flag. There were 24 members and one youth leader present.

Reporter Kim Trolinger gave her report and it was approved as read.

We had correspondence from Suzy Thames thanking the youth for the perfume and hand cream they sent her. We also received an invitation from the Brenham Youth Club inviting us to their annual tennis tournament.

Old business was discussed and we decided to meet at the hall Sept.

23rd for a hayride to Lake Bastrop.

CZECHOSLOVAKIAN INTERESTS

by Frances McDonald (14) Route 2, Box 899 Corpus Christi, Texas Lodge 117, District VII Czechoslovakian Interests Czechoslovakia is famous for its spas, culture and flourishing folk art, highly developed industries and beautiful architecture. These and many more features attract visitors and tourists from all over the world.

An important Slovak culture center is Martin. Martin played an important part in the history of the Slovak National Revival. The vast collections of the Slovak National Museum include national costumes, musical folk instruments, earthenware, wooden articles and embroideries. Martin, like many other interesting places, is ideal for one to see while visiting Czechoslovakia.

A very interesting and excitng spectacle to see is the giant range of mountains called the High Tatras. The summit of The High Tatras is Stalin's Peak, over 2,663 m high. The High Tatras are one large recreation zone, rich in mountaineering terrain, offering tourists ample opportunities for both winter and summer sports. Also among the natural wonders of Czechoslovakia is Macha Lake. This lake located in a woody territory in Dosky, is the largest lake in North Bohemia. It is also a popular health resort with a beach, because of the fresh natural springs. There are many spas to be found in czecho-

Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) is the spa of world-wide fame. It is especially noted for the Sprudel hot spring with wells from a depth of 1,800 meters. The spa lies in the valley of the River Tepla. Another spa, one ideal for the treatment of rheumatism, is the Piestany spa, which lies in a sheltered plain, 168 meters above sea level, and has a mild climate without sharp temperature changes. For health treatment, both thermal springs and volcanic mulch are sought throughout the all-year season. The spa of Podetrady is known for successful treatment of heart and vascular diseases. The spa is an ideal place for those who indulge in water sports, tennis and horselarok riding.

There are many more spas, far too many to be named, but all are very good in treating people for different health problems.

Czechoslovakia has many industrial towns. One industrial town is the town of Ostrava, the third largest town in the republic It is a town of coal, metallurgy and heavy industry. The new Klement Gottwald steelworks at Kuncice surpass anything that has been seen at Ostrava. New cultural and sport establishments and flats are built for thousands of workers at Budeovice and Nova Ostrava. Another industrial town is the town of Plzen. Two industrial establishments have made Plzen famous throughout the world: The Pilsner Vrguell and the huge Skoda engineering work. Plzen had a Gothic church and a museum noted for its collection of Czech embroideries.

One more industrial town is the town of Gottwaldov. This town produces immense quantities of shoes, tires, and machines. The industrial town is surrounded by green lawns, trees, parks and playgrounds.

There is a lot to be seen in the major large cities of Czechoslovakia The most important of them is the capital, Prague. The center of the town lies in a deep valley formed by the Vltava River. From time immemorial the castle of Prague has been the seat of Bohemian Kings. There are many gardens, theatres and universities. Prague has won fame as a university town.

The museums of Prague contain rich collections of rare exhibits of world-wide importance.

Brother Sefcik owned Johnny Sefcik Construction Co. of Temple, and was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 177, Academy.

He was preceded in death by one son and his father.

Born Oct. 17th, 1923, in the Berlin Community, he was the son of Oscar Earl and Edna Dietz Bode.

Brother Bode married Miss Doris Pearl Helmer of Brenham on June 11th, 1942.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Sons of Hermann, BPOE No. 979, SPJST Lodge No. 7, and he was also a director of the Brenham National Bank and of the Washington County Fair Association.

Brother Bode was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical -Lutheran Church in Brenham.

Hospital in Temple. He was born in Elgin March 2, 1908, and had lived most of his life in the Elgin vicinity.

In earlier years he was engaged in farming but he was a carpenter by trade. He was baptized and confirmed in the Czech Moravian Brethren Church in Taylor and later joined St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elgin. He was married to Matilda Albert on July 2, 1933, and to this union two children were born.

Brother Mogonye is survived by his wife, Malinda Mogonye; one daughter, Jeanette Peterson; one son, David Mogonye; four grandchildren, namely: Shannon Mogonye, Terry, Paula and Dawn Peterson, all of Elgin; four brothers, Rudolph Mogonye of Clovis, Calif., Jerry Mogonye of Liberty Hill, Alfred Mogonye of Pflugerville and Anton Mogonye of Austin; one sister, Tonye Brotherton of San Antonio and one adopted sister, Mollie Seggern of Elgin.
