FE101:1 THE EDITOR Time keeps moving forward and so do our lives; which reminds us, relentlessly, that yesterday is in the past, today is here, and tomorrow is just aroud the corner to appear with the dawn or, more technically, at the stroke of midnight. With this thought in mind, each and everyone living on this earth would do well to remember the proverb — seems it's a Quaker proverb — which states something like this: As I pass down this pathway of life, I shall do all the good that I can at all times for I shall pass this way but once. No truer statement was ever made and yet so few of us keep it in mind. This writer had the very good fortune to have been born to and brought up by very sensible parents who, somehow, knew how to instill pride, good citizenship, justice, sincerity, honor, self-discipline and all of the good traits of life in their four children and deplore all of the unnecessary, bad traits which come our way with their temptations during our lifetime and yet, they did so without attempting to be "preachy" about it. Our parents were not intellectual in the true sense of the word, however, as parents, they would measure up far above many of today. They both instilled this thought in their four children: If what you do will not improve anything and may, indeed, harm something, then don't do it.

Our father and mother both loved humor, but not at someone else's expense and at the proper time and place. Your editor was the most mischievous of the four children and, when possible, would pull some mischievous, harmless stunt, and, if our father saw this his look of disapproval looking straight into your eyes was worse than receiving a whipping; his look always seemed to say: I gave you credit for more common horse sense than for you to do that! This was more effective than any lecture for punishment or any other method he could have administered. Our parents were stern, just, fair, loving and instructive and we all loved them and remember them for what they were and gave to us — an education and a happy childhood. Our father's advice was: ed-

Wednesday, September 20, 1978 ucation and intellect are about ten percent of one's life; 90 percent of life is the intellect and common sense in knowing how to use and apply it.

Probably many of our readers wonder why the above was written.

Was it reminiscing? No, not necessarily; just a day or so ago the newscast on the radio brought the news that a mother and father were in custody in a jail under $45,000 bond each because their child had died in a hospital from head injuries received in a beating they had given it. The thought comes to one's mind — How could they? One life gone and two, very likely, ruined!

Probably another reason these lines were written is the fact that so much harm, vandalism, wanton destruction by our youth, vulgarity, etc., is being accomplished that a person wonders where this is all bringing us! We have had State YAD at TJC and now we will have State Royalty at Lodge No. 47, Seaton, Saturday, Sept. 30th. No one will really ever know how proud your editor really is of our youth when they act in the nice, courteous ways they do at our SPJST functions, not only YADS. To our parents: Very much depends on how you bring your children up; you are the mirror they look into. And to our youth: Life is a learning process; the sooner you learn the right, the less chance you have of doing the wrong, Have you younger members ever thought how foolish it is to do something because soni3.one else did it, especially if it is wrong, foolish, unhealthy and/or indecent and possibly destructive? Ask yourself this question: which will bring you more friendship, a friendly smile and a wave of the hand or an obscene, smart-aleck type of gesture?

For that matter, which will create more respect for you among young and old alike? Think about this: the life ahead is yours; what you do with it is your decision. It is your choice.

SUPREME LODGE

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE

Dear Members: We wish to announce that our second State Field Manager, Brother Gene McBride, started his training with the Supreme Lodge on Friday, Sept. 1st. You will recall that from the July minutes of the Supreme Lodge, he was to commence his work with us on Oct. 1st, but that he could start earlier provided suitable training could be found for him. Since there is so much that he needs to know concerning inner-office procedures here in the Supreme Lodge, particularly the Insurance Department, he will be busily acquainting himself with this area in the coming weeks. Later, it is planned to send Brother McBride to some insurance training schools so that he can better master what there is to know about Fraternal Life Insurance.

Brother McBride and his family have settled in Eddy, Texas, a small community some 17 miles north of Temple on 1-35. His address and telephone numbers appear in column 2 of the second page of the Vestnik.

Progress On SPJST History Project

The work on compiling our SPJST History as proceeding well, but probably not as rapidly as we would like. All chapters of the history are pretty well on their way and falling into place. The information is coming in slowest on the individual lodge histories. I would like to give you a status report of this chapter.

The following lodges have responded with the name of the person designated to be in charge of writing the history, but no information has been received as of this writing: Lodge No. 8, Dubina Lodge No. 18, Elgin Lodge No. 32, Victoria

Lodge No 35, Elk Lodge No. 41, Port Lavaca Lodge No. 47, Seaton Lodge No. 48, Beyersville Lodge No. 66, Waco Lodge No. 135, Ennis The following lodges have responded with their histories: Lodge No. 9, Snook Lodge No. 14, Wesley Lodge No. 15, Buckholts Lodge No. 23, Moravia (Incomplete) Lodge No, 24, Cyclone Lodge No. 28, East Bernard (Incomplete) Lodge No. 29, Taylor (Incomplete) Lodge No. 45, Shiner (IncomLodge No. 49, Rowena Lodge No. 51, Ellinger Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi Lodge No. 88, Houston Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Those with the notation "incomplete" are those lodges that have sent in a very abbreviated summary or only submitted pictures of their lodge halls.

This is going to be the most difficult chapter to complete because, in so many instances, lodge records were either destroyed, lost, or simply not maintained. The most difficult histories to complete will be those of lodges that have long since gone out of existence.

We have some records here, but due to the scant and incomplete manner in which the records were kept in some lodges it may well be that we will have to satisfy ourselves with merely the listing of the lodge number, location, date of organization and charter members If any of our readers know of any records about lodges that no longer exist, we would appreciate notification as to (1) Where any remaining records might be, (2) Information as to when that lodge disbanded or what happened to its members, and (3) Any pictures of any lodge halls that may have existed at one time.

Lodges will recall that I had previously sent out a letter and a general outline to be followed by those in charge of compiling these histories. If these have been lost, someone needs to take the initiative to request another copy, and the president or the lodge is asked to designate or elect someone to be

4 responsible for this task.

Finally, you are reminded that if you are among those lodges that has completed their histories, the one remaining thing that you still have to do is to mail us a black and white glossy print of your current officers serving as of either late 1979 or early 1980. This would make them current for the final publication in the history.

Brothers and sisters, this is a large undertaking. I have completed several chapters and passed them on to the directors. There is still much remaining to be done. As I stated earlier, I'm depending on your help and cooperation because some of the information is available only in and from the local lodges. * * Our Progress Is Continuing. Every year the July issue of the Fraternal Monitor, the only publication dedicated to the fraternal movement on a national scale, publishes a section giving the annual statistics of all the member-Societies of the National Fraternal Congress as to number of certificates and life insurance written for the year and total insurance in force as of December 31st of that year. Also included is a report on the standing of the 40 leading fraternals according to life insurance in force.

The SPJST has been in this listing for a number of years. In the latest listing, as might be expected, some Societies moved up a notch or two while others lost by a standing or two. It is interesting to note that among the 20 leading Societies all of them remained in the same standing, with the exception of two which simply exchanged places by gaining and losing one point in the standings. Among the rest of them there were two fraternals who advanced four places in standing, and I'm very proud to say, the SPJST advanced three. Others either gained or lost one or two places in standing. The SPJST now ranks 29th; in 1976 we ranked 32nd. Remember that this ranking is according to the amount of life insurance in force, which, in the final analysis, means that we are selling larger policies to our members. (These figures are as of 31 December 1977).

In comparing our growth figures to other fraternals we are doing exceptionally well. The figures at-

VESTN1K test to the fact. For example, in the latest report about to be issued by Brother Mikeska, the results show that so far in 1978 (through August), we have written a total of 2,631 members for $12,712,000 in insurance. We have four months remaining in this year, so we should have another good year. As I stated previously, as long as we keep breaking our own records, this should make us all happy.

Thank you, sales representatives and members at large! We must be doing something right. We have a good product and you are doing a good job of selling it.

Remerriber that all the "fringe benefits" we enjoy are directly or indirectly derived from the sale of life insurance contracts. I have stated this before many times also, but it bears repeating. We must not lose sight of this fact. I believe that we can continue this momentum in growth and still not lose sight of the fact that fraternalism can and does go hand in hand with growth, and I believe we are doing just that. Let's keep up the good work so that by the time the final figures are in shortly after Christmas that we can again rejoice in the fact that we have been blessed with great success.

I'm not going to make predictions, because in the past I have sometimes predicted less than what our sales force actually sold. I admire them and I have faith in them. I know they will come through again.

Incidentally, Brother Mikeska, with the help of the employees in that department, is doing a fine job of administering the Insurance Department since Brother Hejny's death and until Brother Gebala assumes the vice presidency on Oct. 1st.

Trey Bielefeld, Marty Purchis, Donna Cordes, James Dzuik and Annette Dzuik were our trophy winners. Trey, Donna and Marty told about their projects and displayed their trophies. Several rolls of film were taken of the activities of District VII YAD, State YAD, and camp; all these pictures were shown.

Maxine Pavliska reported that we would invite our District VII Queen to represent SPJST in our Peanut Festival Cdronation. and Parade.

President Bayer reported that the Peanut Squares dance on every first and third Thursday of the month and everyone is invited to come and visit the Dance Club.

It was voted to donate the use of the hall to the Senior Citizens of Wilson County. They are trying to start an over 50 dance club and this will be their first dance. Sept.

27th is the date chosen for this dance.

President Bayer offered his thanks to Jeff Pavliska for shredding the hall grounds. He also started an insurance meeting was scheduled for Sept. 13th, at 7:30 p.m. Anyone having any questions about insurance was invited to attend.

Val and Lillie Chilek are planning a 40th anniversary celebration at the lodge on Sept. 23rd.

A sample of a card for Memorial Fund donors was shown by Maxine Pavliska. It was voted to have some printed with the SPJST emblem on them.

President Bayer and Sister Bayer, our youth leader, are planning to to attend the National Fraternal Congress in Toronto, Canada. They will be leaving on Sept. 16th. Have a good trip.

Rex Purchis made a motion that we again man a peanut booth during the Peanut Festival. Billy Pavliska volunteered to get the raw peanuts for the booth. Several varieties of peanuts will be offered.

This was our fir* afternoon meeting and the attendance was very good. Your secretary was on her way to her grandson's (Trey Bielefeld) 8th birthday party, so we did not stay for the social after the meeting. We will have lunch and a social after our next meeting.

Beginning Oct. 12th the Czech language course will be offered at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson. This will be a 24-hour course.

The class will begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m. on Thursday nights and will be taught by pani "Schubertova" Smith, the lady from Czechoslovakia.

Fraternally, Ilka Smith - SPJST — LODGE NO, 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Guests: Our monthly meetings are being held on the second Sunday of each month at 3:30 p.m., which seems to be a suitable time for most of us.

We had a real good attendance at our recent meeting, with some of the members attending for the first time. Let's keep increasing our attendance, because it will be good for all of us.

We really had a fine meeting. It was orderly and the officers were seated in front by the president.

Sister Annie Green was bubbling over with joy describing the wedding of her granddaughter, Sally Krischke, to Robert Rue, Sept. 9th, at 11 a.m. in the Holy Ghost Catholic Church. A reception followed the ceremony. Refreshments, dinner and dance were enjoyed by all present. The newlyweds are enjoying their honeymoon in Hawaii. Six lovely bridesmaids, with escorts, served the happy couple at this memorial event. Congratulations!

Wednesday, September 20, 1978 the Wax Museum in Los Angeles, the tour of Fisherman's Wharf, and riding the fomous "Bart" (a fast ride on the underground train connecting San Francisco to the surrounding cities) were highlights of their trip. They enjoyed tasting wine at the wineries along the road and took a day off to stop at Travis Airforce Base to visit their nephew, a major, who flies the C-5. They had a first-class tour of the base and the plane which was quite an experience for the three wide-eyed Hegwood children. They had a scenic drive to Lake Tahoe and Carson City (traffic was very bad). They marveled at the different types of mountains, some ,rocky, sandy, grassy and covered with cacti, but all were so beautiful. They arrived in Las Vegas on Vernon's birthday and spent hours at Circus, where the• acts change every 15 minutes.

The children wished to fly in a helicopter so off they v ent, and to top off the whole trip they flew over Hoover Dam and Lake Mead; what a thrill for the whole family!

On a slow drive through Flagstaff, Ariz., Clovis and Gallup, N.M., they came through just at the right time to see an Indian pow wow with 17 tribes getting together for a big time. Into dear old Texas and coming closer and closer to home, they observed the different and beautiful scenery, but their home seemed more beautiful than what they had seen during the 13-day trip.

Brother Jerry and wife, Bessie, just returned from a three-week vacation, where they traveled through Montana, the Glacier Park with temperatures of 40 degrees and lower, through Idaho into Washington State to visit with the Taska family at Washuogal, Wash., on the Columbia River. They were house guests while there and enjoyed the surroundings of their unique three-level home built of the side of a mountain and surrounded by a 30-acre orchard. The Taskas are very fortunate to have the potentials to raise goats and enjoy the rich milk, raise chickens that lay green eggs and have an orchard. Sounds marvelous! They came through Oregon, California (not missing Death Valley), stopped at Reno, Nev., of course, and tried their luck, which was pretty good and with high hopes landed in

9 Las Vegas. They put out all their knowledge, but Lady Luck was not with them and poor Jerry almost lost his shirt and Bessie went down to her last penny (so I was told).

I have a feeling Jerry was paying too much attention to the fair attractions in Las Vegas and did not concentrate hard enough. Better luck next time!

We have nice picnic grounds here at Lodge 88, but so few of our members take advantage of them.

It is nice to have an outing in the clean surroundings, with tables, benches, pool, shade trees and in the middle of it, our beautiful gazebo. There is one group that uses the grounds at every opportunity they have to enjoy the outdoors and do not have to travel miles and miles out of town. On Labor Day, the Bob Allbrittons, Richard Wahlbergs, Lynn Lesak, Bill Rezek, Alex Mendosa, John Broz, Frank Broz ® and seven families — enjoyed the day with games, music and, of course, barbecue and all kinds of goodies; even the rain shower did not scare them; they just waited in the gazebo and danced until it stopped.

Why don't more of the members try these fantastic facilities?

Friday night there was no dance scheduled, but the Chandelier Ballroom was rented out to the Telephone Company employees and over 600 were present. I was in the taproom bar watching two members serving the demanding guests with buckets of ice and their favorite drinks and in ten minutes, I counted 35 people being served and given change. I was thinking, if more members would observe the efforts it takes to have our lodge click as it does, they would find it is not always money. Naturally, there are things that have to be looked after and be paid. The home we have now was not created by members who were paid; they created it with Are and were proud of the results. More of our members should practice that fraternal spirit and extend a helping hand.

The lodge is very generous to the workers and committees; we get two or three parties a year which is a very pleasant get-together, Homecoming for the members each year for all Lodge 88 members, and, if we thing about it, for these special parties there are members who have to devote their time to make

it a success. Joe Miksch is on the board and manages the bar. A lot of help is needed and Joe is grateful for the help he gets behind the bar. Brothers who are been often dishing out whatever is ordered are: Joe Elsner, Jerry Ermis, Bob Martinak, Ludwig Mikes, John Hilsher, Rudy Darilek and others, so don't just stand around and look, be active and be a part of the wonderful place called Lodge No. 88!

The Guy Lombardo Orchestra's appearance at our lodge is rapidly approaching. Tickets will go on sale Friday, Sept. 29th, so make sure you get your reservations before they are gone.

Secretary Albert Banik was called on to read the minutes of the August meeting and these were approved. He read a thank-you note from Dale and Stacy La Nette Brodovsky. Stacy La Nette is the granddaughter of Eugene and Gloria Pavelka.

Treasurer Henry Breitkreutz, Jr., was called on to give his report.

Sister Rosemarie Banik, youth leader, gave a report on the State YAD. Richard Burney won first place with his boom-a-rang. Honey Brown and Dawn Pavelka won third place. Charlotte and Eddie Ray Banik won second place in group talent.

Girls and boys, the lodge is proud of you all.

Rosemarie asked all who had birthdays in September to come forward. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Brothers Ervin Dietrich, Mark Daniel, Sisters Martha Mladenka, Paulette Pechacek, and Rosemarie Banik. Robin Breitkreutz brought the birthday cake. It was made in the shape of and resembling a miniature football field.

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 87 held their regular monthly meeting Friday evening, Sept. 9th, at 7:30 p.m., with President Louis Marek presiding.

Brother Jerry Valchar led the lodge in reciting the pledge of allegiance. The lodge members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased member, Brother Henry Blankenstein.

The iminutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read.

Correspondence was read and discussed.

Randall Dean Carlisle was accepted as a member and welcomed into our lodge.

Lodge reports were given by officers.

James Hejl, Ralph Dashier and Lottie Wichita were reported to be on the sick list. Our wish for a speedy recovery for these members and to others we may not know about.

A special thanks to the social committee and ladies of the lodge for serving and bringing the delicious food for the covered dish

meal served at the social hour. Everyone enjoyed the supper.

Dear Members: President Sidon Tumis called our regular monthly meeting to order Friday, Sept. ist, at 8 p.m. There were 48 members present.

Everyone present recited the pledge of allegiance to our flag.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by our secretary, and all the officers' reports were given.

The State YAD report was given

by Sister Rosie Tumis. Only one youth member from our lodge, Karen Jochen, was in attendance.

She came home with a 3rd place ribbon. Our youth also were awarded $5 for their scrapbook. Karen and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Jochen and Youth Leader Rosie Tumis , along with Brother Sidon Tumis, all journeyed to Temple that day, along with Lodge 88 members on a chartered bus. All had a great time. Thanks to Brother Hanus for the hamburgers.

Remember, our next lodge meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. lst, at 2:30 pm. Lunch and refreshments will be served.

At our last meeting we caught a winner for the attendance prize.

Milton E. Kieschnick's name was drawn and he walked away with $45. Congratulations. We then had a drawing for second and third prizes which were not claimed.

On that night, several hundred persons attended the golden wedding celebration of Richard and Mary Hubenak and enjoyed dancing to the music of the Texas Dutchmen, dining from a bountiful buffet and visiting with the seldom seen friends. It was great to see so many of you turn out and didn't we sound a lot better. We still need more men's voices, so please come out and work with us; let's build a great choral club.

We had a charming visitor, Mrs. Leona Faulk, from Rossville, Kansas; we are happy you came and we hope you come again.

Floyd and Emily Stuteville are leaving Monday for Munich, Germany where they will attend the Polkafest and also tour parts of Central Europe. We wish bon voyage and a safe return home.

We sang a total of 20 beautiful songs that everyone enjoyed singing so much; singing does something for you that nothing else can.

Don't miss the next singing night, Tuesday, Sept. 26th, and be on time.

The following members had their birthdays in September: Lillian Mikulec, Annie Jakubec and Della Psencik. We sang "Happy Birthday" for them and they had the privilege of picking out their favorite song.

After the sfngfest we had a short business meeting. The minutes from our last meeting were read and approved and a letter from Brother Nick A. Morris was read requesting us to practice with the

Seaton Brass Band on Tuesday, Oct. 24th, at 7:30 p.m., for the coming symposium on Oct. 27th, 28th. and 29th. This was approved by everyone present, so fellow members, let's put our best foot forward and really do a bang-up job; we will have invited singers from Waco and Houston to sing with us, so let's all be present with sunshine on our faces and eager to do an outstanding job. Sister Adeline Kohutek has graciously offered to have our annual Christmas party at their new River Retreat and this was also accepted and our Christmas party will be at the home of Willie and Adeline Kohutek Sunday, Nov. 26th, so start your plans now, December is full of other parties. This concluded our business meeting.

After the business meeting was concluded, Martha Klusacek, with a great smile, brought out a beautiful birthday cake to honor Annie Jakubec on her birthday which is Sept. 13th, and as we ate this beautiful and tasty cake, we wished Sister Annie many more birthdays.

LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our vice president, Brother Don Steinman, while our president, Brother Jerry Milan was attending meetings in New York City. All other officers were present.

Members stood in a moment of silent tribute for our deceased members since our last meeting, Brother Paul Brown and Sister Gaye Nell Meissner.

All reports were approved as read.

Sister Pavey gave a report on the grand opening of Lodge 180 in Burleson, and Sister Rose Steinman reported on the grand opening in Corpus Christi of Lodge No. 79's new building, where several of our members attended.

We welcome the following new members: Michael 3. &hurtleff, Deborah Ann Shurtleff, Ace Swift, Allen M. Peck II, Amanda Roach, Bobby Dwayne Roach, Reagan A. Krupka, Johnny Stoeppelrnan and

Maureen Werner.

Accepted was also Brother' Wilton Laddie Motl who transferred to our lodge.

Sister Mary Hale had a nice visit with her daughter, Sister Mary Catherine Garrison and her grandson, Brother George Halford and his new wife, in Illinois. This was her first flight and she en,i oved it. Sister Maria Frill is back in full swing, but still talking about gong back to Germany to visit.

Due to the Octoberfest, it was voted to have our next meeting on Sunday, Oct. 1st so be sure and mark the change. Our members, along with the Sokol members, will be working in the palace that Saturday and Sunday.

We extend our congratulations to Brother Joe and Sister Carrie Bell Milan who are celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary and also to Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan on thier 23rd.

Brother Bill Renfro was honored with a dinner and dance Friday, Sept. 8th at the Round-Up Inn, after retiring as business manager of Operating Engineers Local 819 for 19 years. He was a member for 30 years.

Brother Don Steinman and Sister Rose and family enjoyed a nice visit from Don's brother, Howard, and wife Florence, of Elgin, Illinois.

They were able to attend our Friday night social and were so impressed with our place, and they even pitched in to help and could understand why we all work like we do. Brother and Sister Roy and Lydia Alholm also had guests from Rochester, New York, and they were brought by to see our new home and after a big night, the night before they saw how much was to be done and they pitched in and cleared all the tables, which was appreciated so much.

Back to reality! All good things must come to an end. I want to thank Sister Sebestik (she truly is my sister), for reporting for me last month. It is nice to have sisters volunteer to help in time of need, after all, what are sisters for?

She did a great job.

The Circle met on Sept. 7th, at 10:30 a.m. President Ella Bartos called the meeting to order. After the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag, members observed a few moments of silence in memory of our departed Sister Albi Koza.

The regular order of business followed; each officer gave her report.

Sister Z. Kankrlik is now our permanent recording secretary.

Corresponding Secretary M. Sebestik, read thank-you notes from Sisters Malik and Petrik, also from Mrs. Lii Skrivanek and Lakewood Methodist Church. Sister M. Noska sent 15 get-well cards.

Sister Albi Koza, a charter member of our Circle, passed away Sept. 5th. She has been a resident at the Taylor Rest Home for several years. Sincere sympathy is extended to her daughter, Sister Frankie Curry and family.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Schweizer, Foit, Petrik, Blatney, Toberny, Curry, Hamusek, Zdenek, Kalich, and Dujka.

Sister Zvolanek brought a gift for the birthday sisters. Sister Malik was the lucky one.

Sisters Kankrlik and Roberts told about some of the highlights of their European tour.

Those on the sick list are Sisters Dusek, Blatney, Lesikar, A. Skra-' banek, also Frank Henzen, husband of Sister E. Henzen and Paul Dujka, husband of Sister M. Dujka. To each of these we wish a speedy recovery.

Those who have returned from vacations are Sister R. Zabojnik and family from the Bahamas and Sister B. Kalich and husband from Hawaii.

Congratulations to the following: Sister Virginia and Charlie Blatney on their 50th wedding anniversary; Sister Adell and Joe Vik upon becoming grandparents of a baby girl, Barbara; Bill Foit, husband of Sister Doris Foit, upon his retirement last July ; Stanley Slovak, husband of Sister Libbie Slovak, who caught a 65-pound yellow catfish at the California Crossing on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River.

Congratulations to Patti Dujka, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mlan Dujka of Ross, and niece of Sisters Dujka, A. Skrabanek, Roberts, Zvolanek, and Sebestik, has been named to the list of Distinguished Honor students of McLennan Community College for the spring 1978 semester. Distinguished honor students must have earned a 3.8-4.0 gradepoint average. Patti., a 1976 honor graduate of West High School, earned a grade-point average of 4.0 and is majoring in biology. She is also con-currently enrolled in the medical laboratory technology program at Temple Junior College, where she also maintains an over-all grade point average of 4.0. Keep up the good work, Patti. She is a member of Lodge No. 54, West.

It is very good and a meal in itself. By the way, First Lady Rosalynn Carter dedicated the new city square across the street from their shoppe on Labor Day. We heard her speech and watched her plant a shrub.

Yours truly and husband, Tom, returned safely from our wonderful European tour. It was very lovely and interesting, but give me the good ole USA, anytime. Never again will I criticize our great nation. I am very proud to live in a country where there is freedom. It was wonderful to visit my relatives in Kiadno and friends in Prague. My late parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Tupy, Sr., of Ennis, would have been very proud of me had they heard me interpret the Czech language to the 48 tourists on our bus while in Czechoslovakia. I had a "ball." You young people who are taking the Czech language course, keep it up. Who knows, maybe someday you'll have an opportunity to use it like I did. It is a great feeling to be able to speak one's native tongue. Everyone on the tour, as well as the Czech natives, marveled at my ability. That made me even more proud to be a Czech.

FEATURES TAYLOR REST HOME SITE FOR CIRCUS PERFORMANCE

Clowns, monkeys and dancers galore entertained residents and friends at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home on Friday, Aug. 11th, in the afternoon. Performers from Killeen, Thorndale and Austin, as well as Taylor, kept the audience spellbound. The twirlers from Taylor High School who performed first were: Suzanne Streid, Sabina Steger, Joan Simcik, Paula Machu, Kim McElroy, and Laurie Preuss.

This was followed by the "TwoHeaded" Lady who sang three numbers. The actors for this mysterious lady were Brenda and Linda Leschber of Thorndale.

CIRCUS CAME TO TOWN â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Clowns, monkeys, and dancers galore entertained residents and friends at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor, Aug. 11th. The circus atmosphere was enhanced by two clowns who mingled in the crowd during the performances.

The ballet dancer was Miss Mary Wilkinson of Austin. She owns and teaches at the twirl and dance studio and attends The University of Texas.

Little "Gertie" kept the audience in an uproar. "Gertie" plays the daughter of Ernie and Annie Hooks of Killeen. Mrs. Hooks is an excellent ventriloquist.

The magician for the show was Mike Douglas and his helper.

Mr. Muscles and Mr. Strong were Brian Randig and Joe Holubec.

The circus atmosphere was helped by the two clowns who mingled in the crowd, giving away balloons. They were Lori Sims and Tracy Mertz of Thorndale.

The little organ grinder played his harmonica and was feeding his little dancing monkey some candy.

This was Monseiur Scotty Bishop and his little sister Shelly Bishop of Thorndale.

The program was closed by Amanda Aguilar, Laura Aguilar and Yvonne Gomez singing a song.

Free snowcones, made and donated by Mr. Ed Merschbrock and helper Tim Hudneli of Austin were given to all who attended.

VALERIE RANDOLPH AND MARK SEBEK WED Valerie Diane Randolph of Troy became the bride of Mark Ray Sebek of Red Ranger, Saturday, Aug. 19th in the Memorial Baptist Church in Temple. The Rev. Don Lentz and the Rev. Albert Michalik officiated in the double ring wedding ceremony.

Music for the ceremony was provided by Mrs. McMurtry of Troy as organist and Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Bell of Temple were soloists.

Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Billy C. Randolph of Troy and Mr. and Mrs. Joe F. Sebek of Red Ranger.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore an imported Chiffon gown fashioned with an empire waistline. The bodice and sleeves were encrusted with seed pearls.

Her gown and headpiece were designed and created by Mrs. Carol Chervenka, sister of the groom.

The maid of honor was Miss Tammy Randolph, sister of the bride. Bridesmaids were Miss Pat Wauson of Frost, and Miss Connie Randolph, cousin of the bride, of Troy, Miss Tammy Whitehead of Troy, Mrs. Patsy Rushing of Temple and Miss Julie Cormany, cousin of the bride, of Troy.

The flower girl was Miss Wendy Sebek, niece of the groom, of Madison, Alabama. Honorary flower girl was Miss Tracey Jo Chervenka of New Colony. Ring bearer was Chris Randolph, nephew of the bride, of Temple.

All the attendants wore the chosen colors of apricot and dark brown.

David Sebek of Madison, Alabama, was his brother's best man.

David Dobecka, a senior at West High School, was recently named the Star Agribusinessman in FFA for Area VIII. To be eligible to earn this award David had to earn and productively invest at least $500 from his own efforts; demonstrate leadership ability; serve as an officer and a committee chairman for a major FFA committee; and have a satisfactory scholastic record in his studies. David competed for the Lone Star Agribusinessman with the winners from the ten other areas in the state, and was recognized at the state FFA convention where he was awarded the Lone Star Farmer's 'degree.

This degree is the highest honor bestowed by the Texas Association of Future Farmers of America.

David is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dobecka and is an officer in the West FFA chapter. David is employed through the Co-op program by West-Tex Welding.

(David is an active member of SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

Just recently he was the recipient of the SPJST $500 Scholarship.

The bride is a 1977 graduate of Troy High School where she was a member of the band, National Betu Club, annual staff, and varsity basketball. She will be employed at the intermural office at Texas A&M University at College Station.

The bridegroom is a 1975 graduate of Rogers High School where he was a member of the band, Honor Society, track team, varsity football and varsity basketball. He attended Concordia Lutheran College in Austin where he was a member of the Stags' basketball team for two years. He is now attending Texas A & M University where he is a senior, majoring in Physical Education.

The newlyweds are now making their home in College Station.

The groom and all his family are active members of Lodge No. 24.

From The edge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN

Dear Readers: Monday morning, July 31st was not exactly a beautiful day. It was raining hard and we all were expected to be at the Jackson Woods Scout Hut to load up the bus to begin the trip to Camp Idlewild.

At this time the remains of the tropical storm Amelia were in the area and I wasn't positive that the Robstown Youth Clubbers would get to go to camp. In spite of the bad weather, 29 youth members and three adults did leave by 7:30 a.m. Everyone was cheerful and all were glad to get started on our very exciting trip to Comfort, on the Guadalupe River.

Upon our arrival at Idlewild at 12 noon, the youth from Floresville and New Braunfels were already there. After everyone was settled in the cabins, we all were served a good hot lunch. Outdoor games, swimming, camp fire sing-alongs were led by Mrs. Thelma Hrneir, and Mr. Kenneth Foerster. The inductive ceremony for first-time campers was very impressive. A large circle was formed by the youth clubbers and the first-time campers formed a circle within the large circle, they were asked to kneel and put their arms in front of them; the induction committee then wrote SPJST with markers on their arms, thereby making them members of the camp.

Tuesday, the groups began fabric painting, folk dancing, trampoline and swimming. That afternoon the youth clubbers and leaders boarded the Robstown Youth Club bus and took a tour of the Cave Without a Name, now named the Century Cave. The road leading to the cave was very narrow and rough; full of holes, but we were told that this road will be paved within a year. Then Tuesday night the Mini-Olympics were held. The winners all received their prizes: a lolly-pop. It rained all night and all were looking forward to a brighter tomorrow.

Wednesday morning a strange roar was heard. First thing that I thought of was that there must be a tornado in the area but to my surprise it was the Guadalupe River

on a rampage. There was no electricity; the trees that were felled by the water broke the power lines.

Activities went on and the youth were kept busy playing ping pong, playing card games, fabric painting and other activities. Wednesday night was again a busy time.

The leaders and the camp cook, began to mix ice cream. This was placed in the cooler to be finished later. That night a party was held at the pavilion, the theme was, "Carnival Night." Admittance to all activities was one cent; this included Black Jack, Fortune Telling, Penny Toss, Trampoline, etc., because there was no electricity, candles and kerosene lamps were used for lighting.

Thursday morning another problem arose, no water, but we were lucky, a rancher in the area brought drinking water. Lunch was served, bus and cars were loaded and awaiting departure. All of us left Camp Idlewild at 2 p.m. There never was a danger that the camp would be flooded, and we were observed by heliplanes at least once each hour. I must say that all of the youth members were calm and came to know each other better.

The Robstown group arrived home at 7:45 p.m. and awaiting us were several parents who thanked the sponsors for taking such good care of all the children.

Following the regular youth club meeting, Aug. 26th, all of us went to Jackson Woods Swim Club for a swim party. It was a very hot afternoon and the youth enjoyed the pool. At 5 p.m. we were told that refreshments would be served, and were asked to go to the Swim Club House. Here we found, to our surprise, a decorated club house with balloons and streamers and a table full of good food. This was an appreciation party given by members of the SPJST Youth Club and their parents for the sponsors: Mrs. Thelma Hrncir, youth leader; Mrs. Betty Jurica, assistant YL, and Kenneth Foerster, assistant leader.

Posters were displayed on the walls.

One read: Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head, and one had a picture of a bus in a heavy rainstorm. The honorees were asked to open a surprise package and it was a surprise: full of balloons filled with water. These were put to good use â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a balloon fight. Everyone enjoyed the refreshments, especially

the homemade ice cream.

The appreciation party was given in appreciation of the good care provided and the safe return of both campers and leaders from the heavy flooding on the Guadalupe River. Thank you very much for your thoughtfulness.

The water did rise but it didn't get us; we were all safe and we had a big bus.

We didn't have power but we had a good time.

The food was great and the pool was fine.

Can't wait 'till next year when we go again if it starts to rain we'll take a big pan.

The leaders were great they were very cool we thanked them all now it's back to school.

Dear Readers, Sunday, Sept. 10th was feast day at Lodge 179, Warrenton.

Our youth club sold tickets for prizes to be given away. Jerrie Ann Skrabanek called the roll and read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved as read.

Our Beseda group did great even without competition in state. We all thank Mrs. Allbritton and Mrs. Dobesh for their support and being able to put up with us, Mrs. Wahlberg for her support, Mrs. Pflughaupt for the costumes, and Mrs. Crossman for those beautiful headpieces.

The meeting was called to order

There were 17 members and eight guests present.

Under old businesss we discussed selling Stanley products. We will have a drive in October. We were asked to bring back all our wedding and all-occasion cards; we will sell them at the District VI meeting. Everyone was asked to bring something for Goodwill.

Under new business we congratulated all state winners. We discussed having a Halloween party. For the contest we were asked to draw a picture about Halloween and a poem about Halloween.

We were all asked to donate five cents for the Muscular Dystrophy Drive.

For our Labor bay program, poems were read by Karen Kahanek.

Door prize winners were Chris Krpec, Keith Kresta, Vicki Dorotik, Amy Kresta, Jennifer Krpec and.

Yvonne Kresta.

We then played a game and Team 7 won.

We also had a bubblegum contest. The winners were Michelle Krpec and Brenda Kresta.

We then sang a song and we also worked on craft.

Karen Jochen won a 3rd place ribbon at State YAD in Temple on Sunday, Aug. 20th. I was unable to go because I was in Colorado with Explorer Scout Post 9241.

Our youth club will have a cake booth at the District V fall meeting which will be held at our lodge on Sunday, Oct. 8th.

We had one adult visitor, Mrs. Kieschnick at our meeting.

We were also asked to bring our newspapers to the lodge that night for our money-making project.

IN MEMORY OF

SISTER. SOPHIE MALY CHARTER MEMBER OF LODGE NO. 133, SAN ANTONIO The members of Lodge No. 133 mourn the death of one of our charter members, Sister Sophie Maly, who was a charter member of our lodge 61 years ago, and passed away Aug. 10th, 1978, at the age of 93 years, two months, and ten days, after a lengthy illness. She was a dedicated member of our local lodge, a person who took great interest in our lodge, and a member who was not afraid to stand up and be counted. Her ideas and recommendations were always highly considered; she was known for her knowledge and good humor; she was always respected by everyone. Her love for the SPJST was always number one.

Sister Maly was born May 14, 1885, in Vitkovice, in the Moravian sector in Czechoslovakia. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Chamrad.

Wednesday, September 20, 1978 On April 27, 1903, she married Ferdinand Maly and they came to this country in the year 1906, settling at San Antonio, where they both lived until the times of their respective deaths. Brother Ferdinand Maly died April 2, 1958. He was a leather Cooler by profession.

He made harness and saddles in the early days. Later he was in business for himself and awned and operated his own business in San Antonio. Before his retirement he owned and operated the Bedell Building Parking Place.

Sister Maly worked hard in her younger days, always helping wherever she could. She took great interest in politics, also she was a member of various clubs: Adah Chapter, Eastern Star, SPJST, and others. She was a member of the Aldersgate Methodist Church.

Sister Maly is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Hugo 0. (Erma) Woellert; also a son, Mr. Fred Maly, who is the outdoor editor for one of our newspapers, and who recently was named "Outstanding Outdoorsman"; her beloved son-inlaw, Brother Hugo Woellert; three grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Although Sister Maly worked hard, she always had time for her family. She was foremost a good wife, a wonderful mother, a loyal friend and a good Christian. This was exemplified by the large number of friends in attendance at her funeral, and further by the memorials and expressions of sympathy to her family.

Sister Sophie Maly will be missed by all of us in Lodge No. 133, and also by her many friends in San Antonio.

RAILROAD CROSSING DEATHS INCREASING The number of deaths at the nation's railroad crossings have begun to climb after declining for the last ten years. Some aspects of the problem are baffling to experts in accident prevention, says a safety engineer with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

Only one quarter of the public crossings in the U.S. are protected by automatic gates. But many accidents occur at these crossings equipped with modern control devices, points out Dr. Gary Nelson.

The high speeds reached by some trains do not seem to be a primary hazard, he adds. About half of all crossing accidents happen when both the train and the motor vehicle are traveling at less than 30 miles per hour.

Furthermore, most crossing mishaps occur during daylight hours and in clear weather, points out the engineer. Most perplexing of all is the fact that in 40 percent of the cases studied, motorists igaioried flashing lights or drove around automotic gates into the path of a train.

Nelson cautioned motorists to be aware of railroad crossing locations and to slow down and be prepared to stop when approaching a crossing. Where there is some obstruction of the driver's view of a possible approaching train, extreme caution is necessary. When a crossing is clear, proceed at a speed that will allow the car to coast across the tracks should the engine stop.
