FROM THE EDITOR Another week, another deadline!

Yes, in the newspaper, TV and radio business that is what the people involved face all of the time, day after day, week after week. A writer, reporter, correspondent and/or editor sometimes feel that this or that is worthwhile writing about and then something happens to change their trend of thought, however, each must decide which is of the most importance to the position they, respectively, hold in life.

In this issue, with the cooperation of our mail service, we are printing the results of the State YALE held at Temple Junior College and also the pictures. State Youth Director Dorothy Massey had sent the results in time, however, as usual, the Labor Day weekend approaching sent everything into a mixup; we wanted to have all in one issue. Your editor wishes to apologize for the two pictures of first place arts, crafts, etc., winners because even the dealer could not explain why the new camera, Just received, allowed the two pictures to slightly overlap each other. He feels it was a bad roll of film which allowed it to slip and he has sent it back to the manufacturer. We exchanged the ten rolls of film for a later dated set and all seems to work good now. We hope you understand. * • Late this week we received a personal note and invitation that reads in part: Sept. 15th, at 8 p.m., you will be able to attend one of those "once in a lifetime" occasions. Dr. Svatava P. Jakobson, who for ten years at the University of Texas at Austin, has helped many students find their beloved Czech ancestory, is retiring. The UT Czech Club along with the University Czech Singers wish to show Dr. Jakobson their appreciation by honoring her on this momentous occasion. You are invited to help us make this evening one that she will hold fond memories of for many years to come. and some of you may have some good suggestions or advice that the lodge is missing and the lodge sure misses you. I know some members are working shifts that keep them from attending the meetings and some members do not have a way to get to the meetings. If you need a ride on the night of the meeting, call someone and it may be possible that it can be worked out. Antone Svonek missed the $175. Who will get the $200 in September?

I heard that the Joe Young dance was a great success. Ann Bingham sponsored this dance.

There were groups from Pearland, Woodland Club, VFW, Sons of Hermann, Mason Park, Lcidge 88, Zion Lutheran Singles, and the Billy Goats. No kidding, this nice group has found their way to our lodge and we are happy for everyone to visit our lodge and have a fun time.

Happy birthday to all August members! There were two birthdays celebrated at the Joe Young dance. District V President Jerry Prochazka and our financial secretary, Sister Lillia Mae Peter, had barrels of fun. I overheard, but don't remember where, that Ralph Malek and his wife Jackie celebrated their birthdays; however, knowing Ralph, he had a good time.

Ann, you are a great teacher! Tommy and Mary always have their charming smiles for , all our guests when they enter our lodge. You girls don't know the little "news bee" tells me things, do you? It has told me we sure have a warm welcome at Lodge 172 and the dress code is a nice code. Everyone can be neat and still have a ball without having to "gussie up." Our dress code is: Ladies — No hot pants nor shorts; Men — shirt tails tucked inside trousers and no hats on the dance floor. With this code we have had no trouble and all our guests look great!

Aug. 30th was Willie Malek's birthday. After the trip he and his lovely wife took to Colorado, he may just sit back and relax some more. He and Sydney sure looked relaxed at our "members only" supper. They spent a day with Liz and Frank Myers and Hilda, Liz's sister. They all sent hello to all their friends.

I think everyone really enjoyed our members-only supper. Hats off to the guys who took time and saw that the food was taken care of and the drinks were there. I think Doris Kendall deserves a big Hats Off for tending the refreshments department; she was just great!

LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Members and Friends: SPJST Lodge 13 met Sunday, Aug. 20th, with 17 members and two visitors present. Claude Flippin, our president, called the meeting to order.

Susan Nimtz led us in the pledge to the flag.

Secretary Olga Nimtz read the minutes from the July meeting; Sister Mildred Horak gave the treasurer's report and financial secretary, Magdalene Iselt, reported on the Mortuary Account. All reports were accepted as read.

There was also a silent moment of prayer in tribute to our departed Brother Monroe Hannes and Brother Willie Trcalek.

Several items of business were discussed and voted upon. It was also reported that another sizable payment was made on our hall debt. We wish to say THANKS to everyone who helped make this payment possible.

Five new members were accepted and they are: Paula Kay Snell, Rhonda Louise Snell, Stacy Denise Snell, Bryan Scott Kersten, and Duane K. Kersten. A hearty welcome to all of you.

Door prizes were awarded to Albin Horak, Mary Kubena and Albine. Milburn.

Sunday, Sept. 3rd, the Dime Box Volunteer Fire Department held their annual picnic at the SPJST Hall. A lot of good barbecue was sold and there was all sorts of entertainment in the afternoon with plenty of cold refreshing drinks evadable all day long. Music in the

afternoon was furnished by The Good Hearted Cowboys and there was a battle dance at night with The Good Hearted Cowboys and The Good Vibrations. Over 900 tickets were sold at this dance. We wish to thank everyone who came to help make this a very successful day; especially to all those who worked so many hours to make this picnic possible.

Fraternally, Magdalene Iselt Reporter - SPJSTLODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last monthly lodge meeting was held Friday, Sept. 1st, at 8 p.m. with the Vice President Jimmy Bryant in charge.

Flag Bearers David Pechal and Gene Skrabanek led the assembly in the pledge of allegiance to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Sister Albina (Jerry) Hejl, 75, of Oenaville Community. She passed away after a long illness. May our departed sister rest in eternal peace and her memory live among us forever. Deepest sympathy to the surviving members of her family.

Lodge secretary Sister Delores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers and all were present, except Parliamentarian Anton Motl. Sister Skrabanek also read the roll call of sales representatives with most being present.

Visitors recognized were Brother George (Butch) Pavelka of Lodge 117, Robstown, the newly-appointed Czech Melody Hour master of ceremonies, as of Oct. 1st; Sister Helen Pavelka (his mother) also of Lodge 11'7; Joe Krahulik and SYD Dorothy Massey. I enjoyed talking to the George Pavelkas and meeting them and their children Sharon, Edward and Dianna and Sister Helen, also. Do come to visit again, all named above. Sharon and Edward Pavelka visited the youth club and will join soon.

Sister Skrabanek read the minutes of the previous meeting and these were approved as read. Correspondence included mortuary dues from the SL; an acknowledgement from the Albina Heil family for the flowers sent to their loved one's funeral; a letter from Brother Leonard Mikeska regardin g a social member for our lodge; and a letter about the convention chorus

album that Lodge No. 88 is in charge of selling for $4.50 at the lodge, or $5, postage and handling included, sent to you. Send to SPJST Lodge No. 88, 1435 Beall St., Houston, Texas 77008, and there was also a letter designating a senior Czech member of our lodge to welcome the Moravanka, Band from Czechoslovakia to Texas. We did not act on this either way — we forgot!

New members accepted were Kerri Marie Meier, Mary Elizabeth Haynie, Diane Renee Belicek, Dwight Wayne Belicek, William Mike Wasserman, Irene Libbie Wasserman, Janet Lynn Sodek, Dean Patrick Mikeska, Glen Clayton Banzhaf, Edith Marie Banzhaf, Genevieve Louise Tepera, Calvert G. Helms, and Esteban Ramirez III. Social member John Czerwieski was accepted. We welcome each of those named above and hope you become active in lodge activities. On the sick list we had Patsy Koslovsky, Robert Krcha, John T. Junek and Charles Grimes. Here's hoping you are recovering from your illness.

The officers' and chairmen's reports were well received. The maintenance committee chairman, Brother Jerry Chupik, set the cleaning of the air filters for Saturday, Sept. 10th, at 8 a.m., so if any of you members will kindly help with this project, it will be appreciated.

Board secretary, Sister Lillian Kosarek read the minutes of their last meeting. A barn dance with Jimmy Nemec and the Music Masters playing the music will be held Saturday, Sept. 23, so put on your western attire and plan to have a good time dancing and listening to Jimmy's band.

Brother Calvin Skrabanek, youth leader, gave, his first report: 30 members and four visitors were present. The social for September is the trip to Six Flags this Saturday and I hope everyone had a good time. The scrapbook committee of Kim Mikulas, Elaine and Theresa Zavodny, Ellen Lucko and Joyce Pechal were recognized for a job well done. Lodge No. 47's scrapbook won first place at the state competition. Other winners were

Wednesday, September 13, 1978 Ellen Lucko was the first talent winner in the 15-17 age category at district and state; Kim Mikulas in first place at district and second at state in Home Arts, and Lisa Tepera in first place at district and second at state. Congratulations to all of the winners and better luck next time to the losers. Brother Skrabanek picked Genie Tepera as first assistant and Judy Motl as second assistant. Best wishes in your work to the youth leaders and assistants.

Sister Dorothy Massey, SYD, spoke on the upcoming state royalty to be held at Lodge No. 47 Saturday, Sept. 30th. Watch for her report or Brother Morris' for complete details; I might omit something important. The dance at night will be free with Harold Strand's orchestra playing, beginning at 8 p.m.

Unfinished business was the election of a trustee to fill the unexpired term of Brother Calvin Skrabanek who is the youth leader now and an officer. Serving on the balloting committee were Bernie Gebala, Emily Stuteville and Mary Vasicek. Alice Banning received 23 votes and Jerry Pechal received 36 votes, so he will serve the remainder of 1978 and all of 1978. We also voted to let the committee of Woodrow Marek, Willie Kohutek and Elmer Skrabanek purchase a steam cleaner and the emergency lights for the hall without delay.

New business — a committee of Henry Mares, Glen Banthaf, and Charlie Marek are to recommend the salaries for the officers for 1979. The secretary read the names of recipients of premium refund checks.

Door prize winners were Bernie Gebala and Bob Nrasicek.

The next meeting will be held Sunday, Oct. 1st, at 2 p.m.

Dear Members: The SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone, had a covered dish supper to honor the 16 members who were the recipients of 50-year-SPJST-membership pins.

We stood in a moment of silent tribute for our deceased members Frank Svrcina and Emmitt Vanecek. The secretary also read a sympathy acknowledgement from the Emmit Vanecek family.

Youth Leader Melvin Steger also gave his report. He had 25 members and seven adults to attend the meeting. The local youth club placed well at District II YAD at Academy and they also participated at State YAD in August. The Texas Fraternal Congress invited

the group of girls who participated at district and state YAD to the youth spectacular in Dallas in October. The youth club and their leaders had a great time at camp.

Our next meeting date has been changed to the third Sunday in September due to the St. Mary's Picnic being held on Sunday, Sept.

10th; so note the time change to Sunday, Sept. 17th, at 4 p.m.

WEEKLY NEWS FROM LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Labor Day was a long weekend with many members out of town and leaving the hot city for three days, but the dances at Lodge 88 are scheduled in advancu and there have to be members to service these dances. As usual, the hosting committee has to be on the spot while others are taking it easy and enjoying the long weekend in comfort.

Our Friday night dance was to the western tunes of Bobby Heiman and Hi-Country, and the Saturday night dance with ballroom music provided by the famous Blumes, which was a dress affair. The hosting committees for these two dances were Kenny Broz, in charge Friday night, assisted by four friends; Orlando Richards was in

Wednesday, September 13, 1978 charge Saturday night and held the box office, with wife Era and Lois Gower, beautifully dressed, welcoming the guests. Jack Gower seated the guests. Considering the long weekend, the attendance at both dances was not overwhelming, but fair. Here's hoping everyone will return home safely after fighting the crowded highways and freeways.

At the Friday dance, two of our regular patrons celebrated their birthdays — Emil Slanina and Della Glumb, and naturally, they had cake and all. Della had not one but two birthday cakes, with candles to shine on the table. Both celebrants enjoyed their 39th birthday. I think they are older, but were fooling us.

Happy birthday to both.

Jimmie and Juliette Garcia celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary at the Saturday dance. They pledged their vows in September, 1939, and have reared a lovely family of four children, who are all married, and have brightened their parents' lives by presenting them with ten grandchildren. Jimmie has four boys, Tommy has three boys and one girl, Judy has two boys, and Timmy and his wife are on the waiting list, which will make it 11, pretty soon. It is evident the males are in the majority in the Garcia family. Congratulations. You know, these two people never fail to come to our social nights; I think they have their names on the chairs, because they are always in the same place with their friends.

Annie Skyvara, sister of our active member Bessie Gerlich, was taken to Memorial City Hospital Wednesday, Aug. 30th, for a checkup and this will confine her for several days. Let's hope the findings will be negative. Good luck.

Our annual Czech Day celebration will take place Oct. 22nd, which is whole day affair. President Ennis and Vice President Tillie Helmcamp are busy arranging the day's program. For that day, Czech costumes are in order, so wear them and join in the parade of costumes which will be followed by a free dance. Mark your calendar and spend the day with us at Lodge 88.

Arnold and Naomi Spencer made a trip to the little city of West to attend the third annual Westfest; they left Saturday early and returned Sunday. I will hear all about it today because Naomi Invited me

I received several calls from some of our friends saying that we have a beautiful hall to be proud of and how they like the dance floor and the accoustics in the hall. We tried to do a good job and we feel satisfied with the results.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Beseda dancers from Cottonwood, Dallas, and West for performing for us. It was the first time for some of the people in the Burleson area to see the Beseda and they really enjoyed it.

I personally want to thank my husband, Kenneth Krivanek, for fixing and slicing the barbecued brisket; my mother, Marie Tesar, who helped get everything started in the kitchen and worked until we were through serving dinner and my father who helped sell dinner tickets, they are all members of Lodge 92, Fort Worth. Also, Judy Lowe, wife of Richard Lowe, the consulting engineer for our building and Sally Duke who offered their services in the kitchen and Harriet Monahan, sister of Marie Hampton, who helped serve the meal. The ninth term of the Czech class at Alvin Community College is scheduled to begin Sept. 19th. Class Club officers met to formulate plans for the coming term. Great interest is being generated with some pre-registering because of encrochment due to visits to Czechoslovakia at that time. About 22 students have already expressed a desire to continue with the class. Of this number, four are newcomers.

Spring Branch Department of Continuing Education at Memorial High is beginning its fifth term of Czech study.

There are unbelievable variations of background and aptitude shown.

UNCORRECTED MINUTES OF THE DISTRICT III MEETING HELD APRIL 2, 1978 Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Host Lodge

Meeting Called to Order: The spring meeting of District III SPJST was called to order at 11 a.m. by President Henry Skrabanek.

The pledge of allegiance to the American Flag and the SPJST Pledge were led by Flag Bearer Eddie Banik.

Welcome by President Carl Zich of Lodge 92: "District officers, Supreme Lodge officers, Brother Editor Rudy Sefcik, and 'officers of District III members and friends.

I want to welcome you to our lodge in behalf of our officers for being able to have your district meeting here. We welcome you and hope you have a very nice informative meeting and a nice social and hope that when you leave our hall that you will remember us and come back. Thank you."

Response — 1st Vice President Hugo Kocian: "Thank you Brother Henry. Good morning brothers and sisters and guests. Viola and I had a very pleasant trip back up here from Longview. Nice to recall the dogwoods and redwoods in full bloom, what made it even more pleasant was looking forward to the fine hospitality and fraternal friends we know. I want to thank Brother Carl Zich for your warm welcome to Lodge 92 and want to thank all of the local members who helped prepare for the meeting here today. Thank you."

Audit report: President Skrabanek selected Brothers Albert Banik and Dennis Baraboo to audit the books. 1st Vice President Hugo Kocian selected Brother Otto Hanus. The committee is to get together with Brother Murphy. Brother Skrabanek reminded the Rules and Regulations Committee to meet today.

Approval of minutes of last meeting as appeared in the Vestnik: Sister Hykel read the minutes.

Brother Albert Banik reported that Brother Kamas' books were audited also and in good order. Brother Sefcik asked why the meeting started at 11 instead of 10 the way the minutes stated. Brother Sefcik was glad it started at 11. After some discussion it was decided that the registration is part of the meeting. After these corrections, Brother Cyril Pokladnik moved that the

10 minutes be accepted as read, seconded by Brother Otto Hanus and passed by a show of hands from the membership present.

President Skrabanek then asked Brother Banik if he still wanted to audit the books since he did it last time. If he wanted to step down he would select someone else. Brother Banik reported he would step down.

Introduction of Supreme Lodge officers and guests: 1st Vice President Hugo Kocian introduced Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr., District III Director Sid Pokladnik and his wife, Justine; District III Sales Representative Alvin Nesuda, and wife Wilma; Editor Rudy Sefcik and wife, Maxine; District Youth Counselor Ed Kamas, Museum Curator Otto Hanus, and wife, and District III Assistant Youth Counselor Bessie Petr.

Brother Pokladnik reported that Brother Hanus was elected vice president of the Central Texas Museums. Brother Kocian asked the lodge presidents to stand up and introduce themselves and their wives. Those present were: Dennis Barabas and wife, from Lodge 180; Rudy Sadecky and wife, from Lodge 84; and Robert Dobecka and wife, Lydia, from Lodge 6.

President Sluubanek asked Brother Alvin Nesuda if he knew if Brother Johnnie Hrabina would be present for our meeting today.

Brother Nesuda did not know.

Brother Pokladnik reported that Brother David Andreason was ill and was unable to attend. Brother Sid Pokladnik moved that Brother Skrabanek fill the vacancies in the committees, seconded and passed by a show of hands from the membership. Brother Skrabanek selected Sister Kathy Pottkotter for the Nominating Committee and Brother Vernon Wood for the Rules and Regulations Committee.

Reading of correspondence was read by Secretary Barbara Jean Hykel. Letters were read from SL President Nick Morris and SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska sending their best Wishes.

Brother Kamas asked the members to let the youth and youth leaders go eat first so the youth meeting could be held during the lunch break.

Adjournment for lunch: 11:45 to 1:30.

Reconvening the meeting Brother Henry Skrabanek called the meeting to order at 1:30. Brother Kocian thanked the cooks. Brother Hugo Kocian introduced Brother Jerry Milan of Lodge 154, of the By-Law Committee. Brother Milan reported that if anyone had requests for changes in the by-laws they should write to By-Law Secretary Thelma Hrncir or to the Vestnik.

Roll Call: Roll call of lodges showed that we had 11 lodges represented today. They are as follows: Lodges 6, 25, 35, 54, 66, 84, 92, 130, 154, 178, 180. Sister Maxine Sefcik informed us that Lodge 126, Ross, had merged with Lodge 54, West. Seven lodges had no representatives attending the meeting.

III Treasurer Sales Representative's Report: Brother Alvin Nesuda said, "Good evening Sisters, Brothers, Friends, Presidents. I would like to compliment Sister Wanda on pronouncing these Czech names." Brother Nesuda reported that it was something he was very particular about that is pronouncing names correctly because there is no greater insult than mispronouncing a name. "Last year we sold the largest amount of insurance in any one year, $28,000,000. Our assets total $24,000,000; and $117,000,000 in insurance. Last year four new lodge homes were built, two are now being built — Longview and Burleson. This growth does not happen by itself. This growth is teamwork by our sales representatives and their wives." He then asked the sales representatives to stand.

"This is only half of it. The Supreme Lodge does the other half of processing. They do this well." He then introduced Brother Mikulas from the SL and Brother Pokladnik.

District III Director Cyril! Pokladnik asked the lodges that if they didn't fill out the questionnaires about the lodges' activities that we should be sure and fill them out as soon as possible. Brother Sid reported that he was glad to see so many at the officers' training seminars, because the SL goes to a lot of work to prepare for this. Brothel Pokladnik reported that the ground breaking ceremonies for Lodge 180, Burleson, were held April 1st. Our Society keeps growing and we must keep it fraternal.

Wednesday, September 13, 1978 District III Rest Home Directc.'

Cyrill Pokiadnik reported that the rest homes are doing fine. The Taylor rest home is going to have a 20th anniversary open house April 16. Anyone wishing to reside at one of the rest homes must be put on a waiting list and you don't have to be an SPJST member to be a resident of the homes.

District III Youth Counselor Ed Kamm reported that YAD will be June 25, camp will be July 25-28, State YAD will be Aug. 20th, State Royalty will be Sept. 30. Brother Kamas presented volleyball trophies to the 1976 champions: Lodges 35, 66, 84, 130,and 1977 champions: Lodge 6, and 54 Brother Kamas reported that the youth club is planning to buy, for their charity project, a turntable for the rest home. Brother Kamas introduced State King Steven Stanislay. Steven said a few words.

Supreme Lodge report by Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas: Bro. Mikulas reported that Vice President Joe B. Hejny has been ill and he sent his greetings. Brother Miklulas presented Brother Murphy with a check for the Youth Fund $2,123.75), and District III check for $250. He also reported that 1977 was our greatest year. He reported our assets and insurance sales.

Vestnik Editor Rudy Sefcik introduced Brother Joseph Becan who has been a member for 60 years. Brother Sefcik asked the membership to try and send in their mail a little sooner because the mail is slow.

Auditing Committee report — Chairman Paul Hagar reported that the committee found the treasurer's books (John Murphy is the treasurer), in good order as reported. Brother Sid Pokiadnik moved that we accept the audit report, seconded by Brother Ed Kamas and passed by a show of hands from the membership present.

Rules and Regulations Committee report. Sister Maxine Sefcik reported: Additional proposals of District III Rules and Regulations, April 2, 1978: Article II, Section 1 — Include Gregg and Johnson counties (Article 63).

Article III, Section 1 — Parliamentarian to be appointed :at each District III meeting.

11 Article III, Section 7 (b) — Increase dues from 5 to 10 cents per each adult member.

Article VII Section 1 — Increase dues from 5 to 10 cents per year per adult.

Brother Sefeik asked if they will be published in the Vestnik before the fall meeting and he expressed his opinion that he thought they should be published at the same time the minutes were . Brother Albert Banik then brought out that the proposals and changes should be published 30 days before the next meeting and voted on at that meeting. Brother Sid Pokiadnik moved that they should be published so they can be studied, seconded

by Brother Edward R. Hykel and passed by a show of hands from the membership present. Brother Murphy asked why the committee thought the dues should be raised from 5 cents to 10 cents. Sister Sefcik reported the committee thought that the cost of living has going up so they thought we should go up also. Brother Murphy said that the district was doing okay and he didn't think we need to go up. Brother Rudy Sefcik reported that he agreed with Brother Murphy. Sister Helen Oates requested that we wait until the next meeting and discuss this.

New Business: President Skrabanek reported that he received a bill from Sister Sefcik for bringing the minutes up to date. The bill is $2.80. President Skrabanek asked the membership what their wishes were. Brother Otto Hanus moved that we pay her and motion was seconded by Brother Ed Kamas and passed by a show of hands from the membership.

FEATURES ROUND ROCK LODGE HOLDS GROUND-BREAKING (The following article appeared in a recent issue of the Round Rock Leader. The accompanying picture and the article noted recent ground-breaking ceremonies for the new lodge home of Lodge No. 187, "Spirit of Round Rock," in that city.窶年AM) More than 150 onlookers applauded ground-breaking last week for what will be the largest SPJST lodge hall in Texas. Members and friends of Lodge No. 187 gathered for the ceremonies on the site about two miles northeast of Round Rock on FM Road 1460.

In his welcoming remarks, Morris noted that the Round Rock ceremonies marked the fifth groundbreaking in 1978, an unprecedented number since the fraternal insurance organization began in 1897.

"This is going to be one of the fastest-growing lodges in the state," said Morris. According to Woytek, there were a record 350 charter members present at chartering ceremonies held last spring.

Said Morris, "I've seen the plans for this hall and I think it's going to be a great thing for this community. As an officer of the Supreme Lodge, I'm proud to be part of your effort."

Morris added that Ray Woytek recently established another record by selling $1 million in life insurance in three months and three days.

Local lodge officers in addition to Woyte,k are Charles George, vice president; Wilma Peterson, secretary; Ella Woytek, financial secretary; May Silva, treasurer and Ronald and Susan Woytek, youth leaders.

Visitors attended the event from

several Texas towns, including Taylor, Elgin and Seaton, and from as far as South Dakota. After introducing representatitves of the building contractors, Pokorny Construction Co. of Taylor, President Woytek turned the first spadeful of earth.

A dance celebrating the event followed at Frontier Hall with music by Jodie J. and the Silvertones. * * Construction is expected to start immediately and completion date will be sometime around Christmas, with formal opening and dedication ceremonies probably early in 1979.

By Rita Ratio, Bill Fuller, 60, of Temple, doesn't like to see an empty flagpole so he flew his 17-year-old handmade Texas flag this week at the new Temple Junior College Administration Building.

Fuller, a carpenter, is employed

by Jack Cooper Construction, contractors of the new building which will probably be completed next week.

Fuller made the flag while a member of the 22nd Infantry at Fort Lewis, Wash., in 1961. Since morale and camaraderie were low, Fuller "wanted to do something to bring the men together."

Built Monument He got permission from the commanding general to build a monument, took one man from each company in the unit and the monu-

ment became a unit project.

The monument is of a soldier with a flagpole behind him and is inscribed with "Deeds Not Words."

The day before the 11 a.m. ceremony to dedicate the monument, Fuller obtained permission to fly a flag.

"I wanted to fly a Texas flag; I couldn't find one, so I made it," he said.

Up All Night Fuller stayed up all night working on the flag. "I didn't know how to draw a star, so I went to a Texaco station in the middle of the night and copied the star off a gas tank," he added.

Why a Texas flag? "Cause I'm a Texan," Fuller said.

Although it was too late, the commanding general objected to the idea of using a Texas flag the morning of the ceremony.

Texan for Model "He didn't like the monument either — he said it should have been more life size (the soldier was over seven feet tall). But I told him I used a Texan for a model," Fuller chuckled.

A flag-waver from way back, Fuller was in the Army for 23 years, fighting in WW IL "I've been all over the world and this is by far the best country in it, even though a lot of things are wrong," he added.

In addition to being a carpenter and flag-waver, Fuller considers himself a "naturalized Czech."

Loves Czechs Or Irish, Indian, English, and German descent, he is a member of SPJST Lodge No 47. He loves the Czech people because "they are the only ones raising their families the way I like to see a family raised.

They're very patriotic and they're very helpful to one another and each other," he said.

"I think there should be a lot more flag-waving. Although we will hopefully be through (at Temple Junior College Friday), if I'm here Monday, I'll fly my flag Monday," he added.

After a wedding trip to New Orleans the couple is at home in El Paso where the groom will complete his medical training. The bride is employed as a pathology secretary at Sierra Medical Center.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride selected a formal gown of silk organza and Alencon lace accented by seed pearls. The fitted empire bodice was fashioned with a scoop neckline and bishop sleeves.

The full skirt was accented by a deep ruffle and lace which extended into a chapel-length train. The lace trimmed mantilla style veil extended beyond the train of the gown. She carried a cascade bouquet of white roses, mums and baby's breath surrounding a white orchid with English ivy. She also carried a handkerchief trimmed with lace from her mother's bridal veil.

Matron of honor was the bride's sister, Deborah Knapick of Galveston. Bridesmaids included Phyllis Bravenec, cousin of the bride, Stephanie Geyer and Dianne Macmillan, sisters of the groom, and Donna Coke, Carol Frost, and Nadean Livings. They wore gowns of dusty mauve windsong fashioned with a fitted bodice, flared, capelet attached to a scooped neckline, full flared skirt and wide ties ells cross-

Best man was Brad Geyer of Houston, brother of the groom.

From The State Youth Director RE-CAP OF STATE YAD The talent, craft, and Beseda portion of the State YAD at Temple Junior College was a success again this year. This was the largest number of contestants to participate that I have a record of.

There were 190 $5 bills given out as the boys and girls left the stage and many of them had more than one entry. It is rewarding to see an increase in attendance each year because this is another way of saying "thanks" to our Youth Program.

It was good to see more people there from District IV this year. I know their district youth counselor appreciates them making the trip to Temple to bring their contestants.

I certainly owe a deep appreciation to everyone who worked so hard to make State YAD the success that it was. It takes many people working together and also performing tasks not asked of them to make the activities go smoothly and as fast as possible. Everyone working did a good job at their tasks and many people missed all the talent entertainment because their jobs required them to be working all afternoon. Not one complaint did I hear, only a little disappointment that they missed the performer from their lodge or a talent that they heard others bragging about.

Many thanks to the parents for providing the transportation to bring the children to State YAD. I know that some of you left with a feeling of disappointment because a trophy did not come your way, but all who participated were winners first or they would not have

been eligible to enter in our State YAD. Hopefully, everyone at State YAD will work toward perfecting their performance or craft just a little more for next year, and maybe those who didn't win a trophy this year will be a winner next year. Remember, you cannot win unless you participate.

A discussion was brought up as to who controls the cookbook fund.

A motion was made by Eddie Banik and seconded by Rita Karnas to separate the two accounts where one will be a savings account and checking account. The moone a

Next on the agenda was the annual charity project. DYC Ed Kamas was elected to present ideas as to what the youth club could purchase for one of the S.P.J.S.T.

Rest Homes. He presented a few ideas: One is a screen and a projector, a PA system or a record player. Steve Stanislav made a motion and David Dobecka seconded it, to buy a record player.

Steve then amended his motion and added a screen to the record player, not to exceed $200. David Dobecka seconded this motion and it carried. Eddie Banik then presented the question as to who will purchase these items. The District III youth counselor will take, care of this.

The Activity Committee presented its problem that only Lodge No. 6 sent in a suggestion as to what to plan as a social after our district meeting. A motion was made by David Dobecka and seconded by Eddie Banik to let our coordinators Kathy Pottkotter from the north, and Rosemarie Banik from the south, to plan an activity for their section. They in turn will let each section know through the Vestnik the time and place an activity is planned. The cold cuts and drinks will be furnished by the District III Youth Club.

Under new business was the election of officers. A motion was made

by Carol Skrabanek and seconded

by Eddie Banik to leave all the officers as they are, except for the first vice president, Carol Skrabanek was nominated and David Dobecka made a motion to accept Carol as first vice president by acclamation. This was seconded by Eddie Banik. Motion carried.

Mr. Calvin Skrabanek, youth leader, read a letter that he had received from Sister Dorothy Massey, State Youth Director, thanking him for helping with the State YAD at Temple Junior College. She congratulated Ellen Lucko for her performance on the piano and winning first place, and our youth club for winning first on the scrapbook at State. She stated we could take it to the Texas Fraternal Congress in Dallas. Other winners were Lisa Tepera, second in Pictorial Arts and Kim Mikulas, second in Home Arts.

Congratulations to Mrs. Tepera and Mrs. Motl for being picked as our assistant youth leaders. I know both of you will be good.

Door prize winners were Jerrie Ann Skrabanek and Nora Skrabanek.

Remember State Royalty at Seaton Star Hall on Sept. 30th.

Dear Readers, Our Country Store was a huge success and we the youth club wish to say thanks to all who donated items for our country store.

Ragland, Kingsville, who passed away at the Kingsville Hospital Friday morning, Aug. 25th, 1978.

Brother Laza was born Jan. 8th, 1891, and he joined the membership of the SPJST Society on March 10th, 1912, in Kingsville and in 1976 he transferred to Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi.

Brother Laza was a World War I veteran and a member of VFW Post No. 2375 and the Brethren Church in Robstown.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Aug. 28th, at 10 a.m. at the Piper Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. H. E. Beseda officiating. Burial followed in Chamberlain Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Henrietta; one son, Frank L. Lam of San Antonio; two brothers, John Laza of San Angelo and Joe Laza

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 32, Victoria, in behalf of our membership, express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, MYLES CHARLES ESTERAK, the age 86, of Da Costa, resident of Victoria County for the past 76 years, who died at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28th, 1978, in, a nursing home in Sugar Land.

Born February 29, 1892, he was the son of the late Charlie and Frances Jurosek Esterak. He was the retired owner of a blacksmith shop and garage and was as member of Bloomington Church of Christ.

Brother Esterak was also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 32, Victoria, Woodmen of the World and Victoria Masonic Lodge.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30th, at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with Walter Stevens of Hubbard, officiating.

Graveside services followed at Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Victoria Masonic Lodge.
