FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Your editor sits here back of his desk and suddenly realizes that time is really and actually the master of what you write; if you delay, then what should be news is history. That is the case with Sunday, Aug. 13th, 1978, when our SPJST District It held their fall meeting. This is an annual affair where and when the youth of District II have the privilege of, more or less, being the ones who have the day dedicated to them. DYC Frank Klinkovsky and all of the youth leaders of District II pitch in and do their utmost to see that the youth of District II enjoy the day. Of course, the parents pitch right in also. They have a short business meeting and then have fraternal fellowship and fun. Sister Dubec of District H has a report in this issue and some pictures of the recreation are also included.

All in all, it turned out to be a wonderfully well-spent afternoon and we stayed much longer than we had expected to and enjoyed every minute of it listening to the music and watching the youth and elderly members all join in for some nice togetherness and dancing. If the youth of the United States would take an example from the youth present at that meeting, we wouldn't have all the problems continually shown about U.S. youth on television. —Anon. par for good printing results. * * Sunday, Aug. 20th, of course, was the State Youth Achievement Day at Temple Junior College in Temple. Even though the location had been changed at a very late date, it seems that everyone found the place and there was a large group of statewide participants and members present and enthusiastically supporting the Arts, Crafts, Talent, etc., program. Of course, remember that the Royalty State YAD is Saturday, Sept. 30th, at Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

Incidentally, about three people

asked what the YAD initials stood for and why we use so many abbreviations in our Vestnik. The answer is rather simple — to save space. If we were to spell out the words for SL, SR, YAD, SFM, SYD, DYC, etc., each time, you can see how much space this would take up in the Vestnik. However, we do realize that to a new reader of the Vestnik, all of this abbreviation may be a bit confusing, but once you become an experienced reader of this fraternal paper, it's a snap. * * Right here it might be well to remind our members that the PC (that's Publication Committee) has given the editor the authority and even requested that he cut down lengthy letters and try to avoid duplications when possible.

That was the reason the part of the paragraph was left out of Sister Olexa's letter recently because the Expression of Sympathy was in the same issue and gave the survivors. Sister Olexa stated in the letter that Rev. K. E. Miculka officiated at Sister Agnes Miculka's funeral and the Expression of Sympathy and The Houston Post stated it was Rev. K. E. Mikulik. We hope that explains the omission.

Of course, now and then there have been others in other letters of other members, and we hope all of our members understand that this is done in good faith for the good of our Society in all cases.

The State YAD program was very good and the technicians in control are to 'be commended for their ability to control the record playing, microphones, tapes, etc., at all times. Only in one instance did a record seem to want to rebel and they got that squared away right quick. The auditorium was nearly filled to capacity and all present seemed to thoroughly enjoy the day very much. Our youth are to be complimented for their skills in all fields; they certainly are deft with their minds and/or hands including talents. When a person looks over their accomplishments in arts, crafts, hObby kits, science/educational, sewing, cooking, etc., plus talents, one cannot be anything tut proud of them.

Then when you see the wonderful sportsmanship displayed by the losers toward the winners a sense of pride arises in your chest because these youngsters belong to our Society. The district directors, DYCs, and YLs all had their hands full and their afternoon well filled with duties and the judges also deserve credit for their participation and time spent to do a very hard chore in judging.

To our youth, our Society and especially your editor, are proud of you and urge you to keep up the good work.

As usual, something must go wrong. Your editor finally got the camera he had ordered and it 'being new, the film, did not work right; however, we think the pictures will be all right. They and the State Youth Department report will appear in the next issue, we hope. * * This weekend, Sept. 2nd and 3rd, is Westfest and then, hurrah! we can stay home for at least three weekends. June, July, and August have been miles and miles of travel! * * Thomas A. Edison's son spoke this of his father: "He'd rather go down in defeat keeping his honor, pride, and integrity than to be on the winning side with hypocrisy, thus losing all three."

NEWSBRIEFS The SPJST Publication Committee will meet at the Supreme Lodge Office in Temple at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30th. * * Annie M. (Orsag) Vrla, 87, of Houston, passed away on Aug. 21st, 1978. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Heights Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating. Interment was in White Cemetery in Crosby.

Sister Vrla was a longtime and dedicated member of Lodge 88 in Houston. * * Tim Enders, 22, of West, died Monday, Aug 14th, while enroute to a local hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Home in Hillsboro, with Rev. Boyce Vardiman officiating. Interment was in the Garden of Memory, near Hillsboro. Brother Enders was a member of Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood. * * Mrs. Christine Milberger, 82, of West died Monday, Aug. 21, 1978, in the local hospital. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with Rev. Gene Shepard officiating.

Sister Milberger was a longtime member of Lodge 54, West.

We have lost a sales representative, Sister Agnes Miculka, of Lodge 88, and the lodge has lost a good sales representative and so has our district; she was a wonderful person and also tried to help whenever she could. She was at the banquet and had a wonderful time; like we all say, Live for today, tomorrow may never come. Our sincere sympathy goes to the bereaved family; she will be missed by many, so keep her family in your prayers.

We still have some sales representatives on the sick list, so also remember them in your prayers. I hope soon all of you will be well and be with us selling again.

If some of you have tried to reach me, my mother was in the hospital, but is home again and doing better, only a little weak, so remember her also in your prayers.

Many of you talk to her on the phone and she enjoys talking because there is not much she can do.

She is almost blind and she would still like to do so many things if only she could see. Just remember, if you have good health, please take care of yourself so you can keep your health. You can have all the treasure in the world but the most important one is your health.

Thank you all for what you have written in the month of July and keep it up for the remainder of the year so we can meet our quota soon. I attended Lodge 79's Grand Opening and dedication on Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 5th and 6th.

LODGE NO. 133, SAN ANTONIO TO CELEBRATE 61st ANNIV. Dear Members: Lodge 133 of San Antonio will celebrate its 61st anniversary with a party. The party will be held Sunday, Oct. 15th, at, the new Navajo Building, located at Comanche Park on Rigsby Ave., in San Antonio.

Beginning at 2 p.m. there will be a dinner served; from 5 to 7 p.m., slides of Czechoslovakia and Poland will be shown, plus tables will be set up for those wishing to entertain themselves with Taroky and dominoe games.

Dinner will consist of one-half a barbecued chicken with all the trimmings and homemade kolache, strudel, etc. All refreshments will be free while it lasts. The price for adults will be $2.75 and for children $1.75 (under 12 years of age).

Wednesday, August 30, 1978 LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends: I arrived home safely after my 10-day visit with my family in St. Louis and I enjoyed it so very much.

Our August meeting was cancelled, due to so many members being out of town. Our next meeting will be Sunday, Sept. 10th at 3 p.m.

Brother Frank and Sister Margie Picha also just returned from a two-week vacation which they really enjoyed. They visited their daughter, Sister Kathy and her husband, Eric Halverson, in Grand Fork, N. Dakota, and were happy to hear they will be returning to Texas before too long; they were also in Minnesota and Canada.

We extend our sincere congratulations to Brother Roy and Celeste Steinman who were wed Friday, Aug. 18th at the Lutheran Church, followed by a reception at the Airport Marina Hotel and then flew to New Orleans on their honeymoon. Roy is the son of Brother Don and Sister Rose Steinman.

Celeste is the daughter of Mrs. Fred Losee and the late Mr. Losee of La Jolla, Calif. May they have a long and happy life together.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Sister Josephine Prochaska and family on the loss of her brother, Hubert Gorubec of Granger.

Fraternally, Mary Pavey - SPJST — LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Members: The Sunday, Aug. 20th meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m. by President Henry West. We were glad to see President West present.

He was in the VA Hospital in Temple the past week. He was home on a weekend pass, returning to the hospital Sunday night. We hope and pray that Brother West will be home soon and that there are no serious problems. Good luck, Brother West!

The pledge of allegiance and lodge motto were recited by the members.

5 Visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Guyton of Franklin, Mrs. Linnie Johnson and Mrs. E. A. Macicek of Lamar. We were happy to have you visit our meeting, and we hope all of you will come again. Visitors are always welcome to Linden Hall, Lodge No. 66.

Roll call of officers showed all present, except Treasurer Robert Pavelka and Youth Leader Libbie Parma who was attending the State YAD at Temple.

The July minutes were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt and were approved after a small correction.

In correspondence, a letter was read from Lodge 88 Houston Choral Group pertaining to the 1976 Convention choral album which you can purchase from them. If interested you may call Sister Darlene Engelke for more details.

Brother Ed Mazanec had Sister Engelke to read the minutes of the board of trustees meeting held Monday night, Aug. 7th.

President West thanked everyone who came out Friday night, Aug. 11th, to help cleanup and replace the tables and chairs and arrange them in order; they had been moved away from the walls due to the remodeling that is being done. He asked those present who worked to stand. There was a good turnout of workers and we thank each of you for coming out. The remodeling is going very well and looks great. The paving of the parking area and entrance to the hall has really been a great improvement. The work crews are doing an excellent job and are to be commended. There are still a number of things to be done: one being that of replacing the floor where the tables, and chairs are, which was voted to be done. When completed you can be very proud of our lodge facilities.

How lucky can some people be? I know she will enjoy the trip very much. There will be a noon meal served at the September meeting which is the anniversary of our lodge. There will be more details later.

go on tours, how about our Brother Otto and Sister Matilda Hanus going to Czechoslovakia for three weeks? We are proud of them and are enjoying the details Brother Otto is writing in the Vestnik.

When reading his letter you can enjoy each day of their tour. We are very glad to have them back home again for we missed them while they were away.

Brother Ed Mazanec reported on game nights which have been very successful. There is a need for extra help, so please come and lend a hand; there is always plenty to do to set up tables and chairs and to have everything ready to start. We need your help to make these game nights successful.

Cheer Committee Report — Sister Agnes Mazanec sent get-well cards to Sister Jeanette Smith, who had surgery recently, and it was nice to have Sister Jeanette with us, we have missed you; also to Mrs. John (Diana) Engelke who had surgery recently. We were glad to hear that Diana was doing well, good luck; and a get-well card was sent to Mrs. Helena Engelke, mother of Brother Bennie Engelke, who has been in the hospital. She is at home now and we all wish her the best of health.

We have heard that the Gary Powells' baby is very ill in a Houston hospital. Let us all remember Baby Powell in our prayers and for the parents. We also heard that Brother John Simcik is ill. We hope he is feeling better. We missed you Sunday, Brother John.

LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS The regular lodge meeting of Sept. 12th will be the last meeting at which our president, Gene McBride will preside as lodge president. He and his family will be moving to Temple, where he will assume his duties as state field manager for the Supreme Lodge, SPJST. We want all of our members to attend this meeting in order to show our respect and appreciation for the many years that Brother McBride has so faithfully and loyally served as our president.

We also want to wish him much success and happiness in his new undertaking. Cake and punch will be served after the business meeting.

Oct. 14th the lodge will have a free dance for the members of Lodge 25. Music will be provided by the Czech Harvesters. Members will be admitted free and visitors and guests will be charged the usual admission. Members must pay local dues in order to maintain membership status.

President A. M. Easterling convened the meeting. The minutes of our last meeting were read by Diane Howle and approved. Robert Gresham gave the bar report and Andre Schwab gave the treasurer's report. In the absence of Jackie Wakefield, Peggy Easterling read the 39 names of our new members.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday night, Sept. 17th at 7:30 p.m. and no food will be served.

We will have dances on Friday nights, beginning Septa 8th, after the football games and lasting no later than 1 a.m. The kitchen will be open then. Music will be on tapes.

Starting Sept. 2nd, the new time for our dances will be from 8 to 12 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 1st, skating will be resumed, beginning at 3 p.m.

Peggy Easterling reported that she had two babysitters for the lodge who would keep the children in her home and charge $10 for one child, $15 for two children, and on up. We need to let Peggy know before the Sept. 2nd dance so she can make arrangements.

We wish a speedy recovery to our youth leader, Sister Emma Bass, who is in the hospital.

Our sympathies go to Mrs. John Neal and family on the loss of their loved one.

Since it was a sold-out affair, there was no one in the box office. Orlando and Jack had their hands full seating the guests and Era and Lois looked very pretty at the door.

Quite a few of our members are still in hospitals and slowly getting better; I hope by the time this is printed that most of them will be on the well list; and circulating. Rudy Lesak, after his heart attack, spent a week in intensive care and now is spending more days still in the hospital under the doctor's care. Sister Anna Vria was also confined in the Northwest Hospital over one week and now is getting her strength back with the help of her daughter-in-law, Florence, and son, Calvin Orsak; otherwise her home is with her younger son, Allen (a good looking bachelor).

Brother Gus Gerlach spent several days in Memorial Baptist Hospital to get a general check-up, just to be sure everything is well.

Sister Laura Warnasch did not feel up to par, so husband, Royal, made her check into Hermann Hospital where she spent over a week's time. Both served on the entertainment committee. Sister Della Miksch, always smiling, all of a sudden landed in the hospital to find out what seems to be the trouble.

Sister Gladys Cherry, one of Della Kadlecek's members checked into the Parkway Hospital Aug. 20th and was to undergo surgery. Aug. 22nd. Brother Louis Hanus District Five director, without any one knowing, underwent surgery in St. Luke's Hospital Wednesday, Aug. 18th. Reports are that Louis is doing just fine. As you see quite a few of our members are confined and I am sure there are many more we don't know about. Oh! I forgot Brother Steve Kadera is doing great after his heart attack, but now his wife, Leddy, was taken to see her doctor by her daughterin-law, Elsie Kadera; she was experiencing severe pains. Hope it won't be serious. To all a speedy recovery and get back into circulation; we need you.

Sister Mary Rose Rychlik is very helpful in the Blue Room waiting on guests when Nat, our bartender, gets rushed with orders. Saturday she was sporting a funny grin on her face. For what reason —I don't

8 know and have no idea. The only thing she was repeating over and over was, "Now I'm free as a lark after 23 years." Do you have any idea what she was referring to?

Mary Rose has three grown children, two sons, Ken and Michael, and a daughter, Rose Mary.

Sister Karen Dvorak, the granddaughter of my brother, Frank, and his wife, Frances Dvorak, is a very brave, intelligent young lady. Karen signed up with 17 other students for a government assignment for a ten-month period in Delhi, India.

While working she will be studying toward her doctor's degree. Since she graduated she has traveled and held jobs in Washington, D.C., in California and Boston. More power to you, Karen.

We have our Lodge No. 88 Choral Club and the Concert Orchestra's album. Without bragging, I say it is pretty good. Brother Tim Kostom, our director, is in charge of them so if you are interested, we would like for you to have one and give us a try; you won't be sorry. Call 864-7500.

It sure went by fast, probably too fast for the ones who have to go back. It certainly has been a hot summer but the children do not mind that until they have to get back in those hot classrooms.

The meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m. at Lodge 29, Taylor.

Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris moved that District II send an expression of sympathy to our deceased District II President's wife, Mrs. Hubert Gorubec. The motion was seconded by Lad Zatopek. A moment of silence was observed for Mr. Gorubec.

A welcome to Lodge 29 was given by their president, Brother Edwin Adamek. He stated that Mrs. Gorubec had expressed her desire

er her husband's recent death.

Next in order was the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Roll call of officers revealed, addition to President Hubert Gorubec, that Second Vice President D. I. Bohac was absent.

Roll call of lodges showed that Lodge 29, Taylor, had the most members present.

Secretary Mary Dubec read the minutes of the last District II meeting. There were no corrections made.

District Youth Counselor Frank Klinkovsky stated in his report that 145 youths had attended camp.

The only misfortune was that four youths were involved in an auto accident on their way home.

Treasurer Edwin Adamek's report showed that there was ample money in both the Youth Fund and General Expense Fund.

District II Director Henry Vitek stated again that our district had written 25 percent of the insurance sold. He also related that money was plentiful for loans at the time.

Director Vitek announced the ground breaking ceremonies for Lodge 187, Round Rock, on Aug. 23, 1978.

District Sales Representative Lad Zatopek thanked his representatives for a job well done.

A motion was passed by a twothirds majority to let the District II officers change the fall meeting date.

Regrets for not attending our meeting were sent by Vice President-designate Bernie Gebala, who was out of state and also by Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, who had a family obligation.

A move was made by Lad Zatopek to hold our District II spring meeting at Lodge 18, Elgin, the 4th Sunday in March.

The Auditing Committee was chosen consisting of Alice Banning, Arnold Peterson and Frank Pajeska. Our Nominating Committee consists of Leslie Gustafson, Alfred Klusacek, and Albin Machu.

CZECH CLASSES PLANNED FOR. ALVIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE and MEMORIAL H.S. The ninth term of the Czech class at Alvin Community College is scheduled to begin Sept. 19th. Class Club officers met to formulate plans for the coming term. Great interest is being generated with some pre-registering because of encrochment due to visits to Czechoslovakia at that time. About 22 students have already expressed a desire to continue with the class. Of this number, four are newcomers.

Spring Branch Department of Continuing Education at Memorial High is beginning its fifth term of Czech study. The term starts Sept.

7th and closes after 14 weeks.

There are unbelievable variations of background and aptitude shown.

CZECH LANGUAGE CLASS TAUGHT AT DEL MAR COLLEGE The Czech language classes will be taught at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. The classes for the students will be as follows: Czech beginners, from 4 to 6 p.m. (if enough students register); Czech beginnerS 6 to 8 p.m.; Czech intermediate, 8 to 10 p.m. These classes will be held Wednesday night, Sept. 6th, 1978.

Registration for the fall semester begins Monday, Aug. 28th through Aug. 31st, from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; and then after Friday, Sept. 1st, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, and 1 to 4 p.m., that is until class time. Remember, the college will be closed all day Labor Day. Registration will take place at the LaPalma Room of the E. L.

Harvin Center, located on the east Campus of Del Mar College, Corpus Christi. Location of classrooms will be announced through the Adult Education Office, 512881-6328.

The cost of registration for the course will be $22.50 tuition fee, plus $20 for travel fund for the instructor. The course is for 15 weeks for 30 hours of class time. Joseph Bittersmann 'Will be the instructor.

FEATURES COUPLE UNITED IN HOLY MATRIMONY Rebecca Louise Konvicka,' daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennie F. Konvicka, and Bradley Scott Emery, son of Mrs. Maury Rolnick and Mr. Paul Emery, were married at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 29th, 1978, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Houston. Father Edward Randall officiated at the candlelight, double ring ceremony. Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Willowisp Country Club, with music furnished by Bob Oldried's Caught in the Act Band.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride selected a formal designer gown of ivory chiffon and Alencon lace softly adorned with seed pearls and sequins. The fitted bodice was fashioned with a scoop neckline. The full skirt fell gracefully to slipper length and continued into a chapel-length train.

The matching veil of ivory Alencon lace and illusion gently outlined the gown and swept beyond the train of the gown in full cathedrallength. The veil was adorned with 10,000 seed pearls, and sequins. The bride wore a diamond necklace which was a gift from her new husband. She carried a cascade of two dozen yellow roses and baby's breath.

Maid of honor was Cynthia Louise Callaway of Houston. Bridesmaids were Beva Townsend, Geneva Holmes, Paula Emery, Julie Gentry, Connie Sokol, Ginger Cook, Jan Callaway, Ann Hruzek, and Leigh Emery.

The honor attendants were gowned in alternating rainbow shades of yellow, green, peach, lavender and blue with empire bodice and off-the-shoulder double flounce neckline, and bustled skirts. They carried bouquets of

Best man was William Wayne Patterson of Dallas. Groomsmen were Paul Emery, David Emery, Ross Hatchet, Steven Francis, Tom Polsfoot, Dennis LaCrone and Paul Hildredth. Ringbearer was Paul Alan Konvicka. They wore brown and camel tuxedos by After Six, with a yellow rose boutonniere.

Ushers were Bill Christie, Al Mendola, Harold Meloncon, Charlie Maxwell, and Charlie Simons.

Patrick Konvicka, uncle of the bride, served as candle lighter.

ing cape. Mother of the groom, Mrs. Maury Rolnick, wore a gown of yellow chiffon topped with a matching cape. Both mothers wore corsages of yellow roses.

Soloist, Mary Jane Uschak, accompanied by pianist, Sylvia Reyes, sang: "You Light Up My Life," "Sunshine On My Shoulders," "If," "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You," "Hawaiian Wedding Song," "Evergreen," "Love Me Tender," "Wedding Song," "The Lord's Prayer," and "Morning Has Broken."

A special feature was Jim Vassello who performed "Trumpet Voluntary," accompanied by piano, for the processional.

The bride's grandparents in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Konvicka of Damon. Mrs. Day Emery, of Charleston, South Carolina, grandmother of the groom was also in attendance.

The bride is a 1976 graduate of Lamar High School, Houston, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Arrowhead. She held the title of Miss KENR. Rodeo, 1977. She also attended the University of Houston.

The groom is a 1976 graduate of Memorial High School, Houston,

where he played football for the Memorial Mustangs.

After a honeymoon in various parts of Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming, the couple will reside in Casper, Wyoming, where the groom is employed by NL Atlas Bradford.

The bride's family are members of Lodge 88, Houston.

- SPJST — MONICA ROSE SMAJSTRLA WEDS RICHARD ALAN GREENE St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West was the setting for the double ring ceremony uniting Monica Rose Sinajstria and Richard Alan Greene Sunday, Aug. 20th. Rev. George Doskocil of West officiated at the nuptial mass.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Henry Smajstrla of Marlin. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Durwood Belmont Greene of Houston.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a designer original A-line candlelight imported silk organza gown. Antique ivory French jeweled alencon lace trimmed the molded Empire bodice, portrait neckline and long slim petal-point sleeves. Lace scalloped the hemline with applique on the full attached scalloped train, which completed the walking length pearled scalloped edged veil.

To complete her attire, she carried a cascade bouquet of Ivory, pink and red roses, and rosebuds, garnished with stephonatis, split carnations, star-burst mums and baby's breath. A pearl rosary intertwined the bouquet. The bride wore her mother's pearl necklace that she wore at her wedding and an antique onyx ring, a gift of the groom's mother.

Stephine Strickland of San Marcos was the bride's maid-ofhonor.

A long gown of raisin-colored silesta fabric was selected by the bride's mother and the groom's mother chose a fornwl length toast colored gown of silesta fabric.

Parents of the couple were hosts for the reception, dinner and dance at the West Fraternal Auditorium in West, with music provided by the Hi-Toppers of New Braunfels. The wedding march was led by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bezdek of West.

Upon conclusion of the newlywed couple's honeymoon to Cozumel, Mexico, they will make their home in Houston where the groom is a superintendent for Durwood Greene Construction Co., and the bride is working in the accounting department for Gulf Oil Co. of Houston.

(The following is the text of the remarks delivered by Nueces County Judge Robert N. Barnes at the official opening and dedication of the new home of SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi.

* * Nueees County Judge Robert N, Barnes: It is a pleasure to be asked to participate in the dedication of our new Corpus Christi Sokol Hall.

Your international physical culture and educational organization stresses the two things we politicians may need the most: physical fitness and moral strength. Of course Sokol is not a political or religious organization and people of any age may join. It is not like the little boy who asked the minister to please pray for his father's floating kidney. The minister said "I can't pray for any one thing like that." Whereupon the little boy replied, "Well, the other day you prayed for the loose livers."

Founded in Prague in 1862 Sokol came to the United States in 1865 and to Corpus Christi in the 1920s.

We are very proud of the new facilities and of you members of Sokol. We are particularly proud of the contribution you have made and are making to the strengthening of America's physical and moral fibre.

Every generation of Americans must surely feel it has a greater challenge than those who have gone before. Someone said, it makes me shudder to think what it will take to constitute a radical, 25 years from now. Yet for more than a hundred years the Sokol members have provided a consistent spirit of what America really appreciates — high achievement and character building through self-discipline and practice.

Eric Hoffer said "We are told that talent creates its own opportunities. But it sometimes seems that intense desire creates not only its own opportunities, but its own talents." It seems to me that Sokol can mean this to its members who work hard to improve their talents.

My challenge to you of Sokol is perhaps best said by a favorite poem by Emily Dickinson (written in about the same year that Sokol was formed): We never know how high we are Till we are asked to rise And then if we are true to plan Our statutes touch the skies.

through Brno and many other fine cities arriving in Bratislava late that evening and checked into a fine hotel and had a good dinner.

Tuesday, July 11th, after a good breakfast we were taken to Matice Slovenska where we were received and welcomed by Mr. Vladimir Minas a great Slovakian artist who made us feel at home with his nice words of welcome. Mrs. Anna Istvancinova was everywhere trying to make everyone feel at home and welcome. After a good- dinner we again boarded our bus and were taken on- a tour of the city and shown many historical attractions before arriving back at our hotel, where a good dinner awaited us.

After dinner we danced to the good music provided by an orchestra and everyone had a grand time, which continued until late that night.

Wednesday we were taken to Bratislava Castle where there were more wonders to be seen, the most beautiful marble and granite construction everywhere particularly in the offices of Slovenska Rada. The scene from the top floor of the great castle towards the international bridge between Austria and Slovakia was something to behold. This bridge is of an unusual engineering with no supports over its entire length. We also layed a beautiful wreath at the monument of the great Slovak Partisan leader which was a great affair for all of us. We headed back to our hotel and loaded up for the trip to Martin. That afternoon we traveled through some of the richest farming country we have seen on all our travels. Beautiful villages and cities Trnasa, Nitra, and arried in Martin late that evening.

Thursday, July 13th, after a good breakfast, we boarded our bus and headed for the beautiful office of Matice Slovenska in Martin and were taken on a tour of the entire building and after refreshments we again boarded our bus and headed for the National Cintorian where all the past great historians, artists and writers are interred; this is a beautiful place of fine monuments and beautiful flowers of all kinas. Back to the hotel for a good lurch. We were scheduled for a visit to the Gaderska Dolina, but were informed that after heavy rains that it would be to muddy

14 and instead we were taken to Cicima, a village in the mountains where most of the homes are over 200 years old and the populace still wear their costumes, the only new building being a small children's shoe factory. The old homes are built mostly of hewed logs with painting of hundreds of years still on them. They also have a small museum there with the oldest plow I have ever seen, it was reported to be 300 years old with a wooden mouldboard and a small iron share at the bottom. From here we again returned to our hotel through some of the beautiful woods and on narrow mountain roads.

Friday, July 14th, we again loaded our gear and started through some great countryside to Puchov where the great clothing factory Makyta, is located, this plant is as modern as can be and employs thousands of workers, manufacturing children's and ladies' clothing. We arrived there at, about 10 o'clock and were met by the management of this fine plant and divided into several groups each with a guide and shown the entire plant where well-dressed ladies were making women's and children's clothing of every type. After refreshments we were taken to their meeting room where the clothing manufactured there was modeled by beautiful girls, with great pride in the garments. From there we were taken to a modern tire factory where we were greeted by the management of the plant that ships tires all over the world. We had a good lunch in a fine restaurant in Povazka Bystrice and then headed for Sulov where we had an unusual but welcome experience, this is a fine restaurant between two great solid rock mountains and they have 30 rooms in one building with more rooms over the restaurant which were as primitive as 50 years ago, no running water, bunk beds, which were clean and comfortable.

We had a great dinner at the restaurant and after dinner we built a fire on the outside and roasted sausage all evening, some stayed with it until past midnight and all had lots of fun.

Saturday we started for the Haigh Tatras and this is a dream oaf a trip through some of the most beautiful country ever seen, woods, lakes, rivers, with nature in all its glory. We finally arrived at our des-

VESTNIK tination and there were so many buses and autos there that we had a hard time finding a place to park our bus, finally the place was found and we started up the mountain with shops on both sides full of curios and other goods. The buses were to meet us on the other side, and after walking through very beautiful scenery we emerged on the other side and boarded our bus. From here ,we went to the old Smokovec where we had a great dinner and we headed through these great mountains for Ziar Nad Hronom where we were domiciled in a fine hotel.

Sunday, July 16th we headed for Detva after a good breakfast and viewing the great Detva Folkloric performances. This is held out of the city in an outdoor setting and attended by people from all over Europe we have seen license plates from practically every European country and many buses. The performances were really outstanding and the different costumes were blazing with color. This event was witnessed by some 20,000 people and is growing every year. After the performance we went downtown to have lunch and from there we headed to Sliac where we spent a couple of hours and had refreshments and then headed for our hotel at Biar Nad Hronom.

Monday, July 17th, our friends, Mr. Claude Balm, who looked after our comfort while we were in Slovakia, along with Brantisek Bielik, took us to the Sliac Airfield where we boarded a jet for Prague and arrived there after a flight of one hour and 15 minutes. We were met

by Mr. Hrusa and taken to the office of the Czech Foreign Affairs.

Following breakfast, we decided to go shopping and were escorted by Mr. Prybil of Bulgaria who was acquainted with the city and left us with directions how to find the great department store Kotva, which we found very easily. Upon entering this modern department store we found such crowds that we had to push our way through them. They have three floors with modern escalators and these were full continuously. We finally took a taxi to Mala Strana and after having a good lunch we were taken to the Park Hotel for the night. Next morning early, Mr. Hrusa picked us up and taxied us to the airport said a very friendly goodbye and

Fifty minutes later we landed in Frankfurt, Germany, where we boarded a jumbo jet and arrived at JFK Airport at 2:25 p.m.; went through customs and at 5:55 p.m. we boarded a jet that arrived at DFW Airport at 8:20 p.m. — That's moving around the world in a hurry! We were very happy to see our children waiting for us in the lobby of the airport.

So ended a great three weeks, which we will never forget. — !mum.

FAMILY REUNIONS Svoboda Reunion

The second annual reunion of the descendants of Vazlav and Bar'bora Poboril Svoboda will be held at the Seaton Community Center in Seaton on Sunday, Oct. 1st, 1978, beginning at 9 a.m. Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch with a family-style lunch served. Drinks, plates, forks, knives, napkins, and bread will be provided. We encourage all to come and join in the food and fellowship.

We discussed what to perform at the District VI fall meeting.

Then we made some craft.

Fraternally, Mrs. Vlasta Bartos Youth Leader SPJST — SPJST YOUTH WITNESS FLOODS IN HILL COUNTRY CAMP The SPJST youth club returned late Thursday, Aug.: 10th from Camp Idlewilde on the Guadalupe River as the waters began to recede following last week's giant flood.

The YWCA camp is situated on a hill overlooking the river and was never in any danger from the raging flood water. However this fact was not known to many of the families of the 35 youth and sponsors who attended the camp from this area.

The campers joined youth from Floresville and New Braunfels at camp sponsored by the SPJST Fraternal Life Insurance Society and was under the direction of Mrs. William Pavliska of Floresville, District VII SPJST youth counselor.

Local sponsors were Mrs. Eugene Hrncir, who has accompanied the youth club to summer camp for the past 13 years, Mrs. Betty Jurica, and Kenneth Foerster, who drove the club's bus.

The group left the Jackson Woods Scout Hut at 7 a.m. Monday, July 31st. It was raining as the leading edge of Hurricane Amelia moved through this area. They drove through a light mist until they reached San Antonio, where the rain stopped.

Camp activities began with the noon meal, followed by swimming outdoor games, a campfire sing-along led by Mrs. Hrncir and Mr. Foerster, and an impressive induction ceremony for first-time campers. A dance in the open pavillion concluded the first day's activities.

Tuesday, instructed folk dancing, trampoline and fabilic painting were added. In the afternoon all 60 campers boarded the bus and took a tour of "The Cave Without a Name." A party called the MiniOlympics was held Tuesday night and during the party heavy clouds

built up: it began lightning and poured down.

About 12 a.m. it began to rain even harder and even though the campers were safe in their cabins with canvas flaps for windows, everyone was glad when it became light enough to see the results of the heavy rain.

A strange roar, like few had ever heard, came from the direction of the river. Everyone went down to check it out and saw a raging river with huge logs floating by as well as other debris. The electric line which crosses the river went down and the camp was without electricity. But this posed no problems as the kitchen had gas fuel and the freezers were loaded with food for the next three days.

The sponsors with an available CB radio relayed messages to Radio Stations WOAI and KRYS that all was safe at Camp Idlewilde.

Activities without the need for electricity continued. By late afternoon phone service was restored and parents began calling, checking on their children's safety. Hellplanes kept a watchful eye on the camp and the flooding river which began to recede.

However, that night, even though only an electrical display occurred at the camp. Kerrville got another 14-inch deluge and the river rose again. The camp water supply was a well with an electric pump. Because of the large number of campers, the water was used up by bedtime. However, the cooks had stored up water for cooking and personal use. The commodes were flushed with water from the swimming pool and camp activities continued in a near-normal way.

Thursday, the National Guard came and reported that the road to T-10 would be passable in four hours, so the campers began to pack and left for home about 2 p.m. They arrived at 7:45, putting to rest the minds of the many anx- Calvin Skrabanek (in the background, center), the new youth leader of ious parents.

LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Readers, State YAD was held Aug. 20th at Temple Junior College. There were 18 members and 16 adults of Robstown lodge who attended from Corpus Christi. There were a lot of entries from District VII and everyone was very excited. After registration a roast beef lunch was served.

The talent started at 12:45 p.m.

All of the talent numbers were very good and hard to judge. After talent presentations the awards for first, second and third places were given for the craft entries. Then the awards for talent were given.

In addition the top 10 youth clubs, top 10 youth, high point junior and high point teenager were given.

First place winners from Robstown Youth Club were Brent Hrncir, Matthew Foerster, Stacy Barrett, Jason Barrett and David Hunt. We also received many second and third place ribbons. Our scrapbook placed second and we are very proud of it.

Most of the Robstown members left for home after the presentations. Everyone had a great time and are looking forward to next year.

RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY

HUBERT GORUBEC Our lodge president, Brother Hubert Gorubec of Granger died Friday, Aug. 11th, 1978, of an apparent heart attack while he was operating a cotton stripper. Brother Gorubec was 63 years of age.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14th, 1978, in Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Granger, with Rev. George Tydlacka officiating. Burial was in the Holy Cross Cemetery, at Granger.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 13th, in the Condra Funeral Home in Granger.

Brother Gorubec was a farmer and owner of Granger Auto Supply Store. He served on the Texas Council of City Governments for 12 years and was president of the State Fire Marshals Association.

He was fire chief and fire marshal for Granger. He taught summer firefighting course at Texas A&M University. Brother Gorubec

Gorubec of Clovis, Calif., and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 5th in the chapel of Pete E. Ettinger Funeral Home in Sealy. Interment followed at Sealy Cemetery, with Dr. Orval Strong officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances Brezina of Houston; sister, Mrs. I. R. (Ruth) Mielsch of Houston; two brothers, Edward Brezina and W. E. Brezina, both of Houston, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15th, at Phillip and Luckey Chapel in Giddings, with Rev. H. L. McClarren and Rev. Dan Danhein officiating. Burial was in Giddings Cemetery.

Brother Monroe Hannes was born Jan. 1st, 1913 in Dime Box, the son of the late Adolph and Emma Karcher Hannes. He was reared in Dime Box and attended school there before entering Giddings High School. He attended the University of Texas and Tarleton State University. Brother Hannes taught school for several years prior to entering the banking profession at Lexington State Bank in 1936. Nov. 1st, 1940, he joined the staff of First National Bank in Giddings, then he became president and chairman of the board at First National Bank, in January, 1942, a position he held at the time of his death.

He married Ellie Woodward on July 9th, 1938, in Lexington. They have two children, a son, Fred Hannes of Giddings, and a daughter, Mrs. Leslie (Linda) Pierott of Austin. Other survivors are one brother, Emmitt Hannes, and five

grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were August Wolf, Fred Woodard, Jamie Woodward, Jim Carlisle, Bill Pierott, George Lee Preuss, Franklin Dube and Curtis Frosh.

ITEMS OF INTEREST DOKUPILS VISIT CZECHOSLOVAKIA Mr. and Mrs. William Dokupil spent 14 very entertaining days in Czechoslovakia in July this year and brought back many pleasant and lasting memories with them.

In an interesting visit with them, they related to Editor and Mrs. Sefcik the interesting account of their trip, which follows from the information they gave: The Dokupils departed from D-FW Airport July 3rd for New York, and left New York for Frankfurt, Germany on a jumbo pet aircraft, then to Prague, Czechoslovakia, where they arrived July 4th.

In Prague they were met by Frantisek Kucera, who owns a car and who showed them around.

They saw the Hradcany Castle of Prague, St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague Castle, Loretta Church, St. Nicholas Cathedral, Old Town Hall, the Old Town Clock, Wenceslas Square, the Power Tower and walked over the famous Charles Bridge to the American Embassy, also to the residence of President Husak.

In Kasava they visited the home of Mr. Will Cervenka and family who were there from Waco and West, Texas, at that same time, and also Mr. and Mrs. Karel Konarek and Mr. and Mrs. Adolf Knedla.

While at Halenkov they stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Frantisek Kopecky, the third cousin of William Dokupil, the Kopeckys' daughter, Eva, and daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Ladislav Bartek, plus other of the Kopeckys' relatives.

The Kopeckys took the Dokupils to Karolinka, Vsetin, Velke Karlovice, Beskydy - Radhost, Roznov-PodRadhostem, Bystricka, Lazne Lu-

hacovice, Gottwaldov and Velehrad where they were celebrating the 750th anniversary of the Cathedral of Ss. Cyril and Methodius on that same occasion.

William and Mildred visited the town of Zilina in Slovakia where they shopped for crystal. (They brought home many beautiful souvenirs and gifts).

Since there are not as many cars in Czechoslovakia, the Dokupils did a lot of walking, riding auto buses, trains and also rode the new Metro (subway) in Prague. Some of the Kopecky family and friends owned cars in Halenkov.

The highlight of their trip was to visit the church and cemetery in Halenkov where Mr. Dokupil's grandfather is buried. It was the first time anyone from America has visited the grave.

Then Mr. Kucera took them to the birthplace of Mrs. Dokupil's grandmother, Mrs. Henry Nors, Sr., of West, and great uncle, John HejI of Ross. Mrs. Nors and Mr. Hejl were born in Ronov near Velkeho Mezirici near Brno. While the Dokupils visited in this community, they also visited the church their ancestors worshiped in — St. Anthony's Church which is over 570 years old and very beautiful. (Their father had a saw and flour mill there.) The Dokupils also visited in Orechov.

On their last night in Halenkov, they were given a farewell party at the home of the Kopeckys. For entertainment, Mr. Kopecky's brother provided accordion music and there were all types of delicious Czech foods and drinks served. Everyone enjoyed singing Czech songs and enjoyed dancing. Soon it came time to say goodbye to all the relatives at the Kopecky home and the schedule showed it was also time to return to Dallas on July 17th.

The Dokupils stated that the weather in Czechoslovakia was very cold for July and that the older citizens could not remember when it had been so cold in July. It rained every day except three days.

This was an informative and interesting visit spent with the Dokupils about their trip of pleasant thoughts and memories.
