travels in our State of Texas, say that, if they don't' read anything else in our Vestnik they do read the editorials, and, therefore, we 'will utilize this space to give you some very urgent information about the State YAD to be held this Sunday, August 20th, in Temple. The change in plans was sent to us by Brother Nick Morris and Sister Dorothy

Massey and can be seen on pages 3 and 19 of this issue. At any rate, these things do happen and we are doing our best to get the message to all of you that the State YAD has been relocated at the Temple Junior College campus in Temple, instead of Temple High S'chool.

For those who may not read these articles, we hope there will be a sign in front of Temple High

School having sufficient information directing anyone arriving there to the TJO campus. The directions are in the articles. Temple Junior College is in the southern part of Temple and going down South 1st Street is the easiest way to get there from the north. However, going on 1-35 from the north, you can take the old route through Temple to 1st Street or take Adams Avenue to 1st Street and if you

miss both, you can take Loop 363 (US 190) East. Coming from the south on 1-35 you will find it easily by taking the Loop 363 as stated above, however, on the-Loop, be sure to watch for the sign to the Veterans Administration; if you continue south you will be headed toward Taylor. Of course, coming from Taylor, Cameron, etc., on Hwys. 36, 95, 190, etc., you will come right into it. We'll be looking for you there. In case you get to Temple High School, take Adams to 1st Street and turn right on 1st. * The Grand Opening of Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi home Sunday, August 6th, 1978, was above expectations of those members who had worked so hard to achieve so much in such a short time that they had to do it in.

Many said that all three days were successful and that Saturday was the best. They needed a good rest and we hope they did have some time for just that. There were many SPJST members there from out of town and it was especially noticeable how many Sokol members came from all over the state to help their fellow Corpus Christi Sokols in their joint effort with Lodge No. 79. Their numbers were many from Fort Worth, Dallas, Ennis, Houston, etc., and of course, it is safe to say that nearly all Texas Sokols are SPJST members, also. There have proved to be beneficial combinations of the two organizations in Ennis (135), Dallas (130), Fort Worth (154), and now Corpus Christi (79). On the front page, we show a picture of the hall with their names on it as it appeared when we arrived Sunday with aparking lot filled to capacity. They are on their way and we wish them well. The remarks of the speakers and pictures are in this issue with the exception of those of Nueces County Judge Robert N. Barnes; we received the material from Brother Morris and he evidently did not get a copy of Judge Barnes' speech.

This writer was impressed by the judge's evident good knowledge of the SPJST and Sokol, or else he had done a lot of home work on his subject. It certainly is gratifying to hear an elected public official such as he, be able to appear before a group gathered for a special occasion and speak so

The program was brief and the audience was attentive.

We must keep in mind that the dedication and grand opening of the new home of Lodge No. 180, Burleson, is fast approaching; the dates are August 25th, 26th, and 27th, with the 26th being the big day — a Saturday. The good members there have asked us to give them all the advance publicity we can and we hope we are of some help in that effort. Let's publicize their event as much as we can wherever we go! * In connection with so many of these dedications and celebrations, events, etc., it is proper to note that our Society was founded for two main purposes: one was to offer benevolent help to members and the other to foster our Czech culture and heritage. It is fitting that we remember that 1978 is the 60th anniversary of the official birth of the Czechoslovak Republic, for it was Oct. 28th, 1918, when President-Liberator Thomas G. Masaryk of Czechoslovakia read the Ctechoslovak Declaration of Independence on the steps of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pa., and, even though by accident, our SPJST is dedicating four new lodge halls this year, as if in memory of that occasion. * * It is also proper that there is a tzech Symposium sponsored by Texas A&M University, National Endowment and Texas Commission for the Humanities to be held in Temple on the dates of Oct. 27th, 28th, and 29th. The title of the symposium is "The Czechs in Texas" and is under the direction of Brother Clinton Machann, project director. * * Registration for Czech courses is in full swing at the Univ. of Houston. A _rery Import t Air ouncement STATE YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT DAY

TO ALL CONCERNED: Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have just learned that we will be unable to hold our State Youth Achievement Day at Temple High School on August 20th. Without going into all the details, we wish to announce that this event will he held on the CAMPUS OF TEMPLE JUNIOR COLLEGE. The schedule, as it appeared last week, is unchanged.

The address of Temple Junior College is 2600 South 1st Street.

This is probably the most traveled north-south artery in Temple.

It is also near Loop 363 and is readily identifiable by a very prominent walk-over that is above the street level above South 1st Street. It is also just south and across the street from the VA Hospital. See other details in the Youth Section. —NAM.

NEWSBRIEL Lodge No. 187, Round Rock, is holding their official groundbreaking ceremonies for their new lodge home on Wednesday, Aug. 23rd, at 7:30 p.m. The event will take place at the site on FM 1460, 2 miles east of 1-35 and 2/10 mile north, off Hwy 79, between Round Rock and Taylor. Supreme Lodge officers will be present to participate. After the ground-breaking ceremonies, a social will be held at the Frontier Hall on Hwy. 81, just east of 1-35. Jodie Jay and The Silvertones will play for a dance following the groundbreaking. All members of Lodge 187, friends and guests are cordially invited.

EXCERPTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE THIRD QUARTERLY MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE SPJST, HELD JULY 11-13, 1978, AT THE HOME OFFICE IN TEMPLE, TEXAS The meeting was called to order

Vanek — VI Baby Bayer — VII MINUTES — The minutes of the April 11-13, 1978 Supreme Lodge meeting and the minutes of special meetings held May 3, 1978, May 18, and May 25, 1978 were brought up for consideration. It was agreed to dispense with the reading of the minutes since each Supreme Lodge member had been provided with copies from the minute book but opportunity was given to point out any corrections that might be needed.

MINUTES OF APRIL 11-13—The Minutes were accepted with the correction of one word.

MINUTES OF MAY 3 — The minutes of May 3, 1978 special Supreme Lodge meeting were accepted as presented with no corrections.

RESOLUTION OF RESPECT A resolution formally expressing sympathy on the death of Bro. Joe B. Hejny was proposed and formally adopted on motion duly passed. The resolution follows: WHEREAS, the sceptre of death has invaded the home of our Sister Stacie (Trojacek) Hejny and has called to life eternal, her husband and Vice President of the Supreme Lodge SPJST Brother Joe B. Hejny; and, WHEREAS, Brother Joe B. Hejny left surviving him to mourn his departure, his wife Stacie, his sons Bill Hejny and Donald Joe Hejny, his mother Mrs. Annie Hejny, his grandchildren and other relatives, a host of friends and neighbors, all of whom, with all the members of the Supreme Lodge, desire to record their sorrow at the death on May 24th, 1978, of Brother Joe B. Hejny, esteemed associate who worked harmoniously and diligently for the good of the Society for many years and was elected as Vice President of the Supreme Lodge in the 17th Convention in Temple in 1956 and served in that capacity until his death on May 24, 1978; and, , all members of the Supreme Lodge SPJST bear willing testimony that Brother Joe B. Hejny contributed much to the growth and progress of the Society as head of the Insurance Department and that he influenced and enriched the Fraternal Benefit System by his good works and high standards and that he was a good man who will be missed and remembered by his many friends who mourn his passing.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST hereby gives its formal expression of sympathy and does hereby note in its records the passing from this life of a loyal member, who was esteemed by his associates, loved by his friends and respected by all.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be tendered to the family as a humble expression of heartfelt sympathy in their bereavement; one copy be sent to the Vestnik for publication; and one copy be spread on the minutes of the Supreme Lodge SPJST.

The members of the Supreme Lodge stood for a few moments in silent tribute to the memory of Brother Joe B. Hejny.

President Morris reported on the following: LETTERS — The following letters were read: 1. A letter from the president of the University of Texas at Austin, acknowledging the $1,000 contribution from the Society to the Department of Slavic Languages.

2. Acknowledgment from the family of Joe B. Hejny for expression of sympathy.

3. A Western Union message from the grand president of the Catholic Life Insurance Union, expressing condolences to the family, officers and members of the Society on the death of Vice President Joe B. Hejny.

4. A letter from a member expressing sadness at the death of Brother Joe B. Hejny.

5. A letter from the grand president of the Order of the Sons of Hermann, extending condolences to the relatives and friends of Joe B. Hejny.

6. A letter from several youth leaders and members commenting ifavorably on the recent youth leaders' retreat.

7. A letter from Mrs. August (Bettie) Kacir expressing appreciation for the 50-year pin she recently received.

8. A letter from the Society actuary was read listing new per diem charges effective June 1, 1978. After review of the basis of per diem charges. it was agreed, on motion duly adopted, to accept the increase in charges.

President Morris announced that the Lodge 79 Corpus Christi building dedication would be held on August 4, 5, and 6, and that the Lodge 180 Burleson building dedication would be held on August 25, 26, and 27.

TRAVELS — President Morris discussed some of the 14 functions he had attended the past quarter.

SPJST HISTORY — The latest update on the SPJST History covering the VIIth Convention was handed to each Supreme Lodge member by President Morris.

ENNIS SALES SEMINAR — The seminar recently held on a trial basis was discussed. Favorable comments were heard.

It was agreed to schedule more

seminars similar to the one held in Ennis in other areas of the state.

STATE FIELD MANAGER — President Morris reported that he had received resumes from individuals interested in the position of state field manager. It was agreed that those interested be invited to appear before the board for an interview.

VACANCY IN OFFICE OF VICE PRESIDENT — The agenda turned to filling the vacancy created by the death of Brother Joe B. Hejny. The resumes from individuals interested in being considered for appointment for vice president had been received and distributed to each Supreme Lodge member. The matter was discussed at length.

President Morris was authorized to attend the upcoming KJT Convention on motion duly adopted.

President Morris' report was accepted.

SYD Massey's written report was considered.

She stated that two of the judges at the DYAD in District II had expressed compliments on the program the Society has for the youth.

She reported on success of a session first held in District V giving the youth opportunity to voice their opinions about the SPJST Youth Program and the SPJST. She stated she would use this program in other districts to inform the youth about the SPJST. Comments were made on some problems with the new scoring system now in use at the YADs and it was agreed to evaluate any shortcomings of the new procedures.

SYD Massey's report was accepted.

Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska presented a report from the Vice President's Department.

Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska had been designated to be temporarily in charge of the vice president's department, with the assistance of the other officers, after the death of Brother Joe B. Hejny.

He discussed work progress in the Insurance Department. He stated that the extra efforts of .all the employees in the Insurance Department were appreciated and made it possible to keep the work flowing. He commended all for

Wednesday, August 16, 1978 their extra efforts making it possible to continue to provide first class service for our members and sales representatives.

Director Broz informed the Board that he had just received a message that his mother had passed away in a San Angelo hospital. Various members of the board expressed their sympathy to him and his family, after which he excused himself from the remainder of the meeting.

RATE BOOKS — The rate book project begun during October 1977 had been halted as had been agreed during the previous Supreme Lodge special meeting to allow sufficient time to fully review, the entire rate book for possible' errors and discrepancies. A target completion date of January 1979 was set.

SALES SEMINARS — There was further discussion of the seminar held in Ennis and it was agreed to authorize up to three similar classes. Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska's report from the Vice President's Department was accepted.

State Field Manager Silas Smith referred to his written report and discussed several trips and contacts made during the quarter.

He discussed the poor attendance at some of the sales representatives' banquets and also at sales training classes.

SFM Smith's report was accepted.

Recess for the day was taken and the meeting was called back to order on July 12th, 1978.

LODGE NO. 187 SPJST LOAN APPLICATION — The president of Lodge 187, Round Rock, and the officers and some 15 other members appeared before the board. The lodge has submitted a revised application for a loan of $250,000 to construct an SPJST lodge building.

Each of the members spoke briefly, after which the Supreme Lodge members asked questions of the group. After the group was excused the Supreme Lodge members proceeded to consider the Lodge 187 loan application. The various aspects of the matter, legal and otherwise, were deliberated at length. A favorable report was received from the appraising directors, who had been appointed by the Supreme Lodge to investigate the matter.

A motion was adopted to accept and approve the resubmitted

5 SPJST Lodge 187, Round Rock, loan application without further appraisal.

VACANCY IN GrielCE OF VICE PRESIDENT — The appointment of a vice president again came up for deliberation.

The resumes of individuals requesting consideration for the vacant office of Supreme Lodge Vice President were reviewed and considered.

Following lengthy consideration of the matter Bernard M. Gebala was appointed vice president of the Supreme Lodge, effective Oct. 1, 1978, to fill the unexpired term of the late Joe B. Hejny. It was also agreed that prior to Oct. 1st Brother Gebala have full access to the Vice President's office and Supreme Lodge records and that he take any schooling and training that his schedule permits at Supreme Lodge expense. It was understood that Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska would continue to be in charge of the Vice President's Department until Oct. 1, 1978.

Brother Gebala accepted and stated that he sincerely considers it an honor and he will do the job to the best of his ability.

Recess for the day was taken and the meeting was called back to order on July 13th.

President Morris reported that the previous day after the meeting recessed for the day, he found another resume on his desk for the position of vice president. President Morris passed out copies and then read the resume. He stated that it was regrettable that the resume had not been received before a selection had been made.

SFM Silas Smith had requested the opportunity to address the board and he was invited to do so.

A number of items were brought up and were considered by the board.

Past Secretary Raymond Urbanovsky arrived to visit the meeting.

He was warmly welcomed by the board and spoke briefly.

STATE FIELD MANAGER PO&TiON — Eugene McBride, applicant for position of State Field Manager, was interviewed by the Supreme Lodge. His resume was reviewed and the members of the Supreme Lodge discussed his views and qualifications concerning field work.

Gebala arrived to participate in the interview and the discussion following.

A motion was passed that Eugene McBride be hired as a second State Field Manager.

It was agreed that Eugene McBride's employment be effective Oct. 1, 1978, but it was agreed that the Supreme Lodge officers and vice president-designate have the authority to move up the effective date of Eugene McBride's employment if they found it possible to provide suitable training, On motion duly passed it was agreed to raise the meal allowance for the SFitrls and the SYD from $10 to actual cost up to $15.00 per day.

Before leaving, Eugene McBride thanked the members of the Supreme Lodge for their confidence in appointing him a State Field Manager.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported on the following: REAL ESTATE LOANS — A list of 11 loans delinquent three or more months was presented, and the actions were authorized on each.

OFFICERS' MEETINGS — The Supreme Lodge officers held eight meetings to consider investments during the quarter.

Copies of the minutes of each of the meetings were previously furnished to each Supreme Lodge member and the minutes were accepted on motion duly passed.

REPORT OF SECURITIES AND CERTIVICATES OF DEPOSIT PURCHASED THIS QUARTER. Report was made on renewals and purchases of 12 securities. The actions were ratified on motion duly passed, BREAKDOWN OF ASSETS — He referred to a list showing the percentage of assets invested in each of ten categories for the years 1974, 1976, 1977 and 1978. Assets increased 2.8 per cent over the past 6 months. The percentage of our total assets invested in SPJST lodge building loans was shown to be 5.8 percent.

LIQUID SECURITIES — He reported that the Society has securities totaling $1,922,466 maturing within the next 12 months.

LOAN APPLICATIONS — Report was made on $2,141,845.67 of loans committed and in process.

The amount to be allocated for

6 investment in real estate loans to members was deliberated. A motion was passed that $150,000 be allocated to each district for real estate loans to members.

In view of the fact that demand for loans has exceeded supply of funds available for that purpose, the Supreme Lodge members discussed the possibility of discontinuing acceptance of loan applications on rental property and speculative investment property so that more financing would be available for members needing loans to build or purchase homes.

It was agreed on motion duly passed that hereafter loan securities on new applications are to be limited to: (1) Owner-occupied dwellings or properties acquired to be used as owner-occupied dwellings.

(2)Farms or ranches owner-operated or to be acquired for that purpose.

(3) Commercial properties owneroperated.

(This does not apply to lodge building loans.)

The interest rate will remain at 9 percent.

DEATH CLAIMS — Brief report was given concerning a suit filed against the Society by a beneficiary for collection of a claim under a certificate. The litigation came as a result of denial of the claim some four years ago.

LE'rilat, FROM EDITOR — A letter dated May 1, 1978, from Editor Rudy Sefcik was read. He had requested that the letter should be seen and considered by the Supreme Lodge members. No action taken.

NATIONAL FRATERNAL CONGRESS — The NFCA meeting is set for Sept. 17-20, 1978, in Toronto, Canada.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on the following: GAIN IN ASSETS — Report was made that the net gain in assets for the first six months of 1978 was $670,895.72.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT — He r, ,,,..,pared statement of income and expenses and discussed several items. He remarked that he

V2STN1K accounted for over 3,000 checks issued the past quarter.

He stated that the net increase of insurance in force was greater the first six months of 1978 than in the corresponding pediod of the previous year, although gross sales were down.

It was estimated that the increase in postal rates would cost the Society an additional $7,000 per year for the mailing of the Vestn ik.

PREMIUM REFUND CHECKS — Report was made on the status of the project to work out all outstanding checks.

DELINQUENT LODGES — Report was made on four delinquent lodges CASH — Demand deposits were reported to be $358,000. It was agreed to transfer $100,000 into an interest bearing account.

ACCOUNTING EQUIPMENT — The problems with the out-dated sensimatic Burroughs posting machine purchased in 1971 were explained and the need for purchasing an up-to-date accounting machine was discussed in detail.

A motion was adopted that since the need has been established, that the Supreme Lodge officers be authorized to purchase the equipment.

Financial Secretary Mikulas' report was accepted.

Legal Advisor Lesikar reported on the following: LOANS IN PROCESS — He reported on the status of legal work on 39 real estate loans in process.

It was agreed that on any loan committed for 8 1/2 percent interest, any additional extension of the commitment for more than 30 days be at the old interest rate, but additional extensions be at the new rate in force.

LITIGATION — He reported on pending litigation and proposed loan foreclosures.

CONSULTATIONS He discussed his answers to various questions on several matters.

INCORPORATION OF LODGES — Decision on the matter regarding the question of incorporation of a lodge was postponed from the last meeting. After discussion, it was agreed that such lodge be permitted to keep its corporation intact until it is advised otherwise or the convention considers and acts on the matter of incorporation of lodges.

Legal Advisor Lesikar's report was accepted.

REPORT OF DIRECTORS — Director Kubena stated he was glad that Vice President-Designate Bernie Gebala could be present to observe the afternoon session and he welcomed Brother Gebala.

He also made other brief appropriate remarks before concluding his report.

Director Vitek congratulated Brother Gebala and said he was looking forward to great things being accomplished in the future.

He discussed the need for a cautions approach for any additional SPJST lodge building loan 'a ppl c a tio ns in the future in view of the increasing amount loaned to lodges.

Director Fokladnik — Report was made on the directors' audit and several items were discussed.

The directors stated that they had found the books of the Society to be in very good condition.

Director Pokladnik reported on the success of the SPJST Rest Home No. 2 in Needville regarding the matter of taxes on the rest home.

Brother Gebala was congratulated by Director Pokiadnik, as was the newly-appointed. SFM, Eugene McBride. He concluded by stating that he feels that we have a group that will really work together for the good of the Society.

Director Hanus discussed different approaches in District V in getting people to come to the upcoming District V YAD. He remarked that each time he comes to a Supreme Lodge meeting he is enlightened on some new facet of the Society.

Director Vanek discussed the matter of liability coverage of local lodges.

He commented that the various board members have different thoughts on various matters but we resolve each matter in a friendly manner.

Director Bayer — He discussed activities in some lodges in District VII. He remarked on some of the important decisions made during this meeting and said he hoped we could continue in the same manner in the future.

Vice President-Designate Bernie Gebala spoke briefly. He stated he would do the best job he can do and would keep everything above

Wednesday, August 16, 1978 board. He, pledged that he would try to run the Vice President's Department as efficiently as possible.

He remarked that he was amazed at the professionalism displayed during the meeting and said that the new job will be a challenge to him.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting was set for Oct. 10-12, 1978.

President Morris stated that this had been an historic and momentous meeting and that crucial decisions had been made. He said he was pleased with the results. He again extended congratulations to Brother Gebala.

Fraternally, Wilma Peterson - SPJST — LODGE NO. 180, BURLESON rtomti tIVOT" PLANS FOR BURLESON DEDICATION COMING ALONG Dear Members: Plans are rapidly taking shape for the formal opening and dedication ceremonies of our new lodge hall, which will take place over a threeday period starting Friday, Aug.

25th.

On the evening of the 25th, we have engaged the services of the famous Ernie Kucera from Abie, Nebraska. Ernie has been to Texas on a number of occasions before and his music is considered to be one of the best of its kind, which includes old-time and ballroom music from the 20s and 30s. Ernie will be looking for many of his old friends and is eager to make new musical friends on this trip to Texas.

Saturday, Aug. 26th is the big day because that is the day of the formal opening and dedication of the new hall. Things will get underway with a meal served at 11:30 a.m., with barbecue and sausage and all the trimmings at a nominal price. Food will be available throughout the afternoon. Brother Jerry Janek is the presiding officer for the dedication program.

Weather permitting, the hall will be cleared at 1:45 p.m. in preparation for the outdoor flag-raising and Pledge of Allegiance at 2 p.m.

Shortly after that, the ribbon across the front door will be cut and the door will be unlocked, with Supreme Lodge President Morris, District III Director Sid Pokladnik and Lodge 180 President Dennis Barabas participating. If the weather is inclement, these ceremonies will be held inside starting at 2 p.m.. Otherwise, the dedication ceremonies will move inside after the front door is unlocked, where Father Leon Flusche will give the invocation and later the benediction. Principal speakers will include SL President Nick A. Morris, Lodge 180 President Dennis Barabas, District III Director Sid Pokladnik, District III SR Alvin Nesuda, Burleson Mayor Robert Ables and Chamber of Commerce President Jay Darnall.

There is various entertainment in preparation for the afternoon, and information on that will be available as soon as it is firm.

There will be an evening dance from 9 to 1, with music by Rollin' With The Flow, with an admission price of $3 per person, and onehalf price for teenagers ages 13 through 17.

The activities on Sunday, Aug. 27th will include a battle dance in the evening, with music by Adamcik Polkatones vs. The Texas Czech Playboys.

The officers and members of Lodge 180 are extremely proud of their new building, which is nearing 100 percent completion. Some public events have already taken place in the building, with a great deal of interest being shown by members of the community.

Lodge 180 is located just south of and adjacent to the city limits of Burleson approximately 11/2 miles south of the city on I-35W. Traveling south on I-35W, take the Renfro St. Exit and, go south on the service road 11/2 miles to the lodge building. Traveling north on I-35W, take the Bethesda Road Exit approximately 3 miles south of Burleson, cross over to the west side of I-35W and go approximately 21/2 miles on the service road to the lodge hall.

In a recent meeting with the officers and Planning Committee, I was requested to take care of the advance publicity for this event and I'm happy to oblige.

Make plans to attend this celebration because on Aug. 26th all roads lead to Burleson and the new home of Lodge 180. (Additional information will be published as it becomes available.)

We had 43 members present, including two new social members, Violet Kiphen and Otto Kiphen. We wish to welcome these two fine persons to our group.

Everyone present recited the pledge of allegiance to our flag which was led by youth member Dennis Veselka.

Then we had roll call of officers and reading of the minutes from our previous meeting. Officers' reports were also given.

The member attendance prize again went unclaimed because Robert Joe Brezina was absent. Our prize money is climbing. Come to the next meeting because you may be a winner.

Another attendance prize for a beer cooler was drawn. We are happy to announce that George Janik was the winner; yes, and he was present!

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: The Music Masters again entertained our dancing fans at the Aug. 5th dance. We had a large crowd and as always everyone praised them by saying that they are great performers and enjoyed the music they played.

At this dance everyone who worked did a great job at their assigned duties. Thanks to all who did so much for the lodge, especially Mr. and Mrs. James Wilcox who put in so much free time overseeing that all the supplies for the refreshment department, kitchen, including the cleanliness of the lodge facilities plus many other things are kept in top shape at Lodge 74.

We are proud to know that Sister Dorothy Smith (who also did so much for the lodge by donating her time and hard work) is now at home after being released from the hospital in Lufkin. She is recovering real well and we are glad to know that the operation turned out

to be successful.

It looks as if we will have a square dance club performance at our lodge some time soon. We are having quite a few of the club members join our SPJST Lodge No. 74 (from Elkhart and Grapeland) and, of course, we have quite a few people who are SPJST members of our lodge for a long period of time.

Since I've talked to the president, Mr. Forster, of the square dance club from Elkhart, he said they would like to perform at our lodge soon; so after our lodge meeting of Aug. 13th, I will inform everyone about the new event that may take place at our lodge in the future.

We are having more and more people come to our game night every Tuesday night. Keep inviting your friends!

Brother Jake Jacobs celebrated his birthday with Louise, his wife at his side and friends surrounding two tables to observe Jake's 39th ??? birthday. Jake was born Aug. 6th. Among the guests were John and Marilyn Dyess of Austin, visiting their friends, Karl and Ora Nell Hassebrock. All had a jolly time. Happy birthday, and many T-more!

Brother Sonny Elmer, with his wife, Vlasta, and their family of five, recently moved into their new spacious and beautiful home at Cypress. The home is surrounded by two acres of land and now Sonny has plenty of space for his hobby—horses. Sonny and Vlasta reared a son, Glenn, now a graduate and a member of the City of Houston Fire Dept. Daughter Cynthia is married and presented her parents with a granddaughter, Angie, and then there is Debra, also married recently, and Brenda and Lisa at home with their parents. Sonny is the son of our late Brother Stanley Eizner who is missed very much at Lodge 88. Best wishes and enjoy your new home.

Make a note of Saturday, Aug. 19th; again we will have the fine orchestra of Ed Gerlach playing for our guests in our Chandelier Ballroom. It will be a dress affair, so observe the dress code for that night. For reservations call the lodge office; there might be some tickets available and you might be lucky. A reminder, all Collins drinks in the Blue Room for the month of August will be 85 cents; come out and enjoy yourself with your friends in a cozy atmosphere.

By the time you read this Heather Chander should be out of the hospital and home. I had a nice chat with her while she was in the hospital. Heather is the daughter of Lillia Mae Peter.

Two of our guests, Wink and Marie Apelt, celebrated their anniversary and Marie also celebrated her birthday at our last dance.

Happy birthday to all of our August birthday celebrants! Our news letter reporter, Louise Willis, had a birthday Aug. 8th. I know for sure she isn't 39 yet, because if she was, she could'nt get around like she does; she has the honor of being named Woman of the Year in the ABWA Channel Chapter of Pasadena.

Dear Members: John and I drove from. Kennedy to Pearland July 29th and attended a dance at Lodge No. 172, Pasadena, where we danced to the good music of Weinert Grohmann, and what a good time we had with all our friends! We spent the night with our good friends Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Foster.

Sunday, July 30th, we attended the District V YAD and we enjoyed every bit of it; the talent presentations were great. I'm sure some will make the state. Three couples of our friends from Pearland joined us for the dance following the YAD program, with enjoyable music by Bobby Heiman and the Hi-Country.

Friday, Aug 4th we drove to Corpus. Christi and attended the fish fry and stayed for the kick-off dance with the music of the Nashville persuasion, at the new home of SPJST Lodge No. 79, and Sokol Corpus Christi. What a beautiful building they have! We had planned to stay Saturday and Sunday, but other commitments kept us from staying any longer. We did meet the president of Lodge No. 18, Elgin, and his lovely wife and their group.

Saturday night we drove to Houston to spend the night with my sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Suter. Sunday morning they drove us to Bridge City to visit our sick brother and his wife.

Then we came back to big "H" Sunday afternoon we spent some time (stayed overnight) with our daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sledge.

10 Monday afternoon we drove back to Kennedy. It was a very good trip for both of us. I am happy to be feeling well enough again to make these short trips.

We are now planning to attend the opening of the new lodge building of Lodge 180, Burleson, Aug. 26th. We will stay overnight with John's brother and sister-inlaw, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ordener in Fort Worth.

While at Lodge 88 in Houston we had a good chat with SL President Nick Morris and Sister Morris, District V Director Louis Manus, Youth Counselor Richard Wahlberg and his wife, District V Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska, Editor Rudy Sefcik and his lovely wife, Maxine; we visited with them at the Vestnik office in West in early June. It is always a pleasure to visit and talk with all these friends.

LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY Dear Members and Readers: Vice President Joe Cantu called the meeting to order, due to the fact that President Bill Hutka was running late, because of another commitment.

The pledge of allegiance was recited and correspondence was acknowledged.

All committee chairmen gave their reports with our lodge showing great success. The refreshment department and ticket sales showed great success also, plus our game night socials. A reminder, if you would like to work at the lodge either on a Saturday night or a Tuesday night, you are more than welcome. It takes all of the members pulling together to make a success.

The board of trustees met with many items on the agenda. President Hutka stated that Mr. John Cox had come by the lodge to estimate the cost of enclosing the front part. He stated the outside will have brick, and on the inside will be cement building blocks; the entry section will have a place to hang hats and coats. This will enhance our lodge facilities. The board also proposed to have warning parking blocks installed around the building because most of you know that our building is metal

and it has been bumped by autos so we want to protect it from any further damage. A water fountain was discussed but after discussion, it was dropped. The board decided to start giving tickets at the door and stamp your hand; otherwise, the ticket will not get you in and out of the lodge, your hand must be stamped.

In addition to the board's proposals, they proposed to purchase some new equipment for our game nights. We will use the old equipment for a backup in case anything should go wrong with the new one.

The members voted to accept the proposals from the board, with the exception of the water fountain.

Our lodge president praised all committee chairmen and their workers.

Shirley Cantu, ticket chairperson, asked for volunteers to help at the ticket office. Dorothy Lisenbe, Dorothy Massey and Frankie Hutka volunteered; anyone else wishing to help, please contact Shirley Cantu.

Aug. 11th, we had a party for members and their invited guests.

As always we have a great time at our parties. The Rocking Country provided music. If you want some good food just come to one of our parties and at the same time you will get to meet your old friends and make new ones.

Thanks to all the ladies who made and brought food; thanks also to Lodge 177 for providing the meat; and we wish to thank Mr. Cecil Lagrane for getting the meat.

President Hutka expressed his gratitude to the State Youth Director Dorothy Massey and our Youth Leader Pat Tomastik for doing a good job at camp. Dorothy Massey told the membership about the auto accident the Elgin youth members had on their way home.

Lodge 177 members would like to wish each of you a speedy recovery.

Youth Leader Pat Tomastik read a letter from Brother Nick Morris inviting our youth group that won District II group talent to perform at the Texas Fraternal Congress in Dallas, at the Baker Hotel, Oct. 21st. This is a great honor and we are very pleased that our group has been asked. The mother lodge is going to buy new costumes for the group.

Karen Lawandowski asked to have the lodge facilities for the Mental Health Retardation. The lodge voted to let Karen have the facility free of charge providing the lodge is cleaned up afterward.

Sister M. Noska. sent 115 get-well cards.

We had 30 members present and seven guests. The guests were: Mrs. Lil Skrivanek of Austin, Mrs. Bessie Reames, Mrs. Agnes Mach, Mrs. Leslie Cechan, G. Skotak, M. Jurcik and B. Zvolanek.

Sisters Petrik and Blatney are on the sick list and both sent greetings. Others sending greetings were Sisters Toberny, Dusek, Malik, Koza, Ozymy and Urban.

Sister Ann Skrabanek sent a letter of resignation, giving up her duties as recording secretary. Sister Kankrlik has been taking and writing the minutes of the meetings in the absence of Sister Skrabanek and is doing a wonderful job. Ann, we hope to see you at our next meeting.

Hostesses for the day were: Bartos, Voss, Blatney, Long, Curry and E. Cechan. The luncheon was delicious.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Meek, Hemrzal, Zvolanek, Houzvicka, and Gauvreau. Sister Hemzal deserves special honor because she will be 96 years old on

11 Aug. 17th, and she is the oldest member of our Circle. Gifts for the August birthday drawing were brought by Sister Roberts and Sebestik. Sister Sebestik baked a cake for the birthday girls and it was sampled by all those who did not mind putting on a few extra pounds.

Sister Zvolanek reminded everyone of the Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas, Oct. 15th.

July 13th, 38 of us chartered a bus to Fort Worth to spend the day with the Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92, and the Friendship Club, who had sent us a special invitation and we accepted. I must say we all had a wonderful time. We were greeted at the door with the many friendly and smiling faces, and each of the ladies was presented with a beautiful corsage. Ann Polk, president of Ladies' Circle or Lodge 92, gave us a hearty welcome and then introduced her officers, followed by Marie Tesar, president of the Friendship Club, who introduced her officers. Sister Ella Bartos, president of the Dallas Circle, was unable to make the trip; therefore, VP Ann Zvolanek introduced her officers. Thank you, ladies, for the delicious dinner.

Donations to the treasury were made by Mrs. Agnes Stepanek, Sister Linda Kartous and George Skotak. Those who made donations in memory of Rudy Malik were: Sisters Helen Vrla, Sr., Zvolanek, L. Pavelka, E. Pavelka and Sebestik; also, Sister Skotak made a donation in memory of Frank Konakovsky.

Several of the sisters and their families motored to Temple on July 16th to see the musical drama, "The Immigrants." The performance was wonderful and enjoyed by all.

Danny and Sherrie Vrla, dressed in their Czech costumes, were among the many well wishers who greeted Martina Navratilova, the Wimbleton tennis champion, at the DFW Airport, followed by a celebration at the Airport Marina Hotel. Dann,' and Sherrie are the son and daughter-in-law of Sister Helen and Arnold Vrla.

Johnny, the son of Frank and Millie Noska was married July 22nd.

The sisters who are traveling at this time are: Tlamicha, Hawaii; M. Noska, Virginia; King, Germany; and Nesuda, visiting a son

in Virginia.

We are happy to report that two of our visitors, Bessie Reames and Agnes Mach became our members before the meeting adjourned.

The time to register for the fall semester Czech classes at the University of Houston was set for Aug. 14th and 15th, at the Ezekial Cullen Bldg., with a payment deadline of Aug. 26th and late registration is Aug. 30th in Hoffheinz Pavilion.

The classes are not restricted to grammar and reading, but Professor Halama also sets aside time to lecture on the facinating culture and history, as well as folklore of Czechoslovakia. The Czech Club also is planning another year of fun and adventure — remember, all the many activities there were to choose from last year? We wish to once again give our wannest thanks to Mrs. Frances Olexa for graciously preparing such a wonderful Czech banquet for the students.

Learning the Czech language is becoming even more useful and important. There is a need for more people qualified to teach Czech in high schools, to be interpreters in Washington, D.C. and much more; plus after only two semesters of studying Czech, there is the opportunity to go to Prague, Czechoslovakia, for six weeks as a part of a group of students from many universities who go for a summer session at Charles University.

Last semester, the University of Houston was able to boast the largest Czech enrollment in the nation, and we are looking forward to another enjoyable and successful

We also have some other individuals who hold prominent positions in the SPJST and in this district: District VII Sales Representative Sister Tillie Valchar of Jourdanton; District VII Youth Counselor Sister Maxine Pavliska of Floresville and her husband Bill, Brother Otto Hanus and his wife Matilda, who

is the Librarian, Museum Curator, and Archivist of the LAM Department at the Supreme Lodge. State Field Manager Silas Smith and his wife, Jeanette, were not able to be present and send their best wishes, as does the recently-appointed new State Field Manager, Brother Gene McBride and his wife Frances Jo, currently residing in Ennis.

The other dignitaries on stage will be introduced and called upon to speak for a few moments by the presiding officer, Brother Mack Munson. We are happy and honored to have all of you people from the Supreme Lodge, District VII, and likewise pleased that so many of you good members and friends from other lodges and districts are here to help Lodge 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi celebrate this grand occasion.

The financing for the construction of this edifice was provided by the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST Lodge No. 79, and in strictly legal terms, the membership of Lodge 79 is ultimately responsible, however, as in the case in a few other instances in our Society, the roster of the SPJST membership here in Corpus Christi is virtually the same as the roster of Sokol Corpus Christi. It would be a gross understatement to say that these two units work closely together. I commend the members of these two organizations who have worked so hard on this building project and on putting together today's program. They complement (also compliment) and assist one another. One is a lodge belonging to a family of Fraternal Benefit Society lodges and the other is affiliated with a national gymnastic organization. Both have different goals, but in a sense„ they share common purposes and common ideals, some of which are love for your fellow man and recognition of honesty, truth, intergrity, and the dignity of mankind. One traces its origin to leaders in Prague, Czechoslovakia, over a hundred years ago, and the other to far-sighted CzechTexas pioneers in South Central Texas who were dedicated to the building of a great fraternal organization of mutual benefit to its members.

It takes the combined efforts, enthusiasm and honest hard work to achieve a goal of this type and

continue its opnraIion and administration on an even keel. There is no doubt that the talents and the "muscle" are here to achieve this.

It was my privilege to meet with a delegation and Program Planning Committee regarding these opening and dedication ceremonies in Hallettsville on Saturday, June 3rd, and it was at their request and by mutual agreement that I assist with the advance publicity with all the news media throughout this area and our official organ, the Vestnik, regarding this event in the form of news releases. These news releases were sent to ten newspapers, three television stations, and eight radio stations in this area. I must state that the arrangement has worked nicely and Brother 'Mack Munson has been in touch almost on a daily basis about further details regarding the program. It has been a pleasure being a part of this effort, since they stated that evening in Hallettsville, and quite undeultanda,bly, that they were "busy enough and had all they could say grace over getting ready for this opening." I trust that the media are well represented here today and have carried the advance publicity sent them.

Now, let's talk a little bit about the lodge and the building itself. Former SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Anton Cermak Lodge No. 56, both of Corpus Christi, were merged in a special meeting on 13 January 1974. It was my privilege to be present and preside over the joint meeting until lodge officers were elected. At that meeting, a final vote and decision was made to settle on the designation "Corpus Christi Lodge No. 79," since Lodge 79 has been the first lodge to be chartered in Corpus Christi and that it should therefore be retained; also that its designation was shorter as opposed to "Lodge 56 Anton Cermak, Corpus Christi, Texas."

Please bear with me for a few moments so that I might give you the historical background of the two lodges that were merged in January, 1974, because I think this is historically important and an interesting chapter in the existence of these two lodges.

The original Lodge 56 was located in Yarrelton, a small community in

Wednesday, August 16, 1978 Milani County a few miles north of Cameron. It was organized on May 5th, 1906 and disbanded on Oct. 1st, 1931. Lodge No. 56 was organized in Corpus Christi on Oct. 27th, 1933. (In those days, it was the practice to assign the number of disbanded lodges to newly- organized lodges. Farmer SL Secretary Bro. J. F. Chupik tells us that this practice ceased from the time he took office on Jan. 1st, 1941 because of the confusion it caused in keeping records straight in the Supreme Lodge.)

Corpus Christi Lodge No. 79 also has an interesting history. The original Lodge No. 79 Rozkvet Holliday was located in Archer County between Seymour and Wichita Falls in far. North Texas in what is today District IV. It was organized on Jan. 2nd, 1909 and disbanded in December, 1921. The present Lodge 79 was organized in Corpus Christi on Feb. 5th, 1922.

The new and present SPJST Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi, has 1,010 certificates in force as of this past Friday.

Sokol Corpus Christi purchased the old National Hall, which had been previously owned by shareholders, in 1938. The land, consisting of one acre where the hall was situated, was owned by the Josef Kocurek family. After the shareholders were bought out, Sokol Corpus Christi proceeded to purchase the one acre for the sum of $750. The old Sokol Hall was added to and remodeled several times. The hall had been damaged a number of times by hurricanes, especially Cecelia, in 1970.

In 1942, Sokol Corpus Christi purchased an additional three acres of adjoining property from Ladislav Zdansky for $848. It is on this property that this new hall is situated. This area on Kostoryz Road was originally the center of what was called "The Bohemian Colony" in Corpus Christi at that time, which had its origins in about 1904 under the leadership of Stanley L. Kostoryz.

There is also space in this building for a library, museum, and lodge archives. The dimensions of the building are 140 ft. x 132 ft. (I hope my figures are correct.) The ballroom and physical training area consists of an area of 108 ft. x 70 ft. containing a total of 7,560 sq. ft. The square footage of

the entire building is 18,480 sq. ft.

10,880 sq. ft. are included in the kitchen, dining room, refreshment area, meeting• room, stage, library, rest rooms, and lavatories, as well as a large spectator seating area.

The building is of multi-purpose design, automatically heated and refrigerated. The members feel that they have ample adjacent parking facilities.

Formal ground - breaking ceremonies for the new lodge were held on this site on Tuesday, May 3rd, 1977.

So, brothers and sisters, the journey to this day and this occasion has been a long and arduous one — a lot of hard work, endurance, anc PATIENCE! A lot of hard work lie ahead of you. We are here today for the grand opening of SPJST Lodge 79 - Sokol Hall. Many of us remember the old National Hall, our first home, with fond memories.

The history behind our two organizations — SPJST and Sokol — is long. Many members believed in our fraternalism and brotherhood and worked and sacrificed for our common goal. To perpetuate our way of life — to bring up our children in a clean, healthy, physically fit, morally straight environment.

We have attained that goal up to a point.

Through the hard work and sacrifice of our present memberships, we now have a beautiful new building. But it is up to us to set an

Mr. Chairman, Supreme Lodge officers, brother directors of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, Corpus Christi Mayor Gabe Lozano, and distinguished guests, my brothers and sisters: It is a great honor and privilege to be here on this great occasion and see another sparkle added to the "Sparkling City by the Sea," great asset to the city of Corpus Christi as well as to Di.,.trict This beautiful fraternal home is an example of what can be

8 complished through united effort and cooperation. I know that this will be a giant step forward for Lodge 79.

Many many long hours of work had to go into such a large project. Above all, there must be cooperation, understanding, and unity among the members to take on such a large project. The results of this can be seen today -- a home to be here for many years. You should be proud to be a part of this project and a member of Lodge 79. Remember, this lodge home belongs to every member of the lodge and that every member is very important.

The progress of the SPJST has been superb. Today there are 129 lodges with a membership of approximately 54,000 and over $117,000,000 worth of life insurance in force, with assets in excess of $24 1/2 million. In 1976, SPJST was number 32 out of the 40 leading Societies 'by life insurance in force; last year, in 1977, we moved up to number 29. As can be seen, we are a growing Society.

Our Youth Department and programs are one of the best, if not the best, and shall never take second to anyone or any other Society.

We are a family-oriented Society that shows fraternalism and fellowship. Least of all, we must not forget our youth, for they are the future of your lodge and our Society.

My wife Polly, and my three children, John, Roxy and Wendy, and I have made numerous visits to Lodge 79 and enjoyed the fraternalism and fellowship shown us.

We look forward to a continuing relationship with all of you here.

Congratulations, Brothers and Sisters of Lodge 79. I wish you every success in this beautiful new lodge hall.

Nazdar! * * Post-Dedication Observations: The dedication was well attended, although reports had it that the Saturday attendance was a Jampacked capacity audience. By any standard of measure, the weekend opening and dedication in Corpus Christi must be termed an absolute and overwhelming success.

The officers and members of Lodge 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi must be commended for their tremendous effort, and I might say endurance, in staging this event.

Some of the people from considerable distances came Friday and stayed through Sunday. People from all over the state — north, east, west and south — were in evidence, and a spirit of euphoria existed.

We disliked leaving so early after the ceremonies on Sunday, but as we explained to our hosts, our oldest son and his family had arrived from the air base in South Dakota where he is stationed, in Temple shortly after we had departed for Corpus Christi, so that we had not gotten to see them before we left.

In addition, we were very eager to see the grandchildren, including the one that we had never seen.

We were happy to see them still waiting for us when we arrived back home in the Seaton community at about 11:45 p.m.

It was a great day and everything seemed to "click" in the proper sequence. This was due, in large part, to the competence of the presiding officer on Sunday, Brother Mack Munson. Of course, he had the help of many good brothers and sisters. Everyone was working harmoniously for the success of the occasion. The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, which played both Saturday and Sunday, added just the right flavor and dimension to the ceremonies and are

STATE YAD — SUNDAY, AUG. 20th, 1978 TO: All Concerned This year's State Youth Achievement Day (Talent, Arts and Crafts,

and Reseda) promises to be another big day and milestone in the history of the Youth Department of the SPJST. It should also be one of the best we have ever had.

If you are a contestant in anything, be sure that you register in time or are in line before registration time is over. We are allowing more time for registration this year, but your cooperation is necessary because the people in charge of registration must then move on to other Jobs. (The schedule for this day follows this report.)

Please do not put your craft in the display area until after you register. The lobby for the display is rather spacious where you will be able to wait with your craft until you are able to register. If you have a large craft or several crafts to enter, get your relatives or friends to help you ahead of time.

We will again have large signs designating the various craft areas.

Contestants in talent are asked to announce their own selections, but NOT names, lodges, or districts. Remember that microphones will not hurt you so step right up so that you can be heard.

If possible, get your scrapbooks to your DYC or get them to the YAD during registration time.

We hope you and your club and your district are represented at this State YAD. Do not let them down.

If you can't come, be sure to inform your DYC so that your alternate or second place winner may represent your district.

20 Breaks will be spaced according to number of participants in the contest.

"Break from Your Shell and Participate," was the theme of our District VII Youth Achievement Day held July 23rd, 1978, at Lodge 107 Floresville.

YAD takes many, many hours and many people to be a success.

We really don't stop to think of the hours of work that go into this day. The youth spend hours and hours preparing their crafts, practicing their talent (many talents are practiced for years). All this cannot be done without the parents and the leaders. Then when the big day conies, this takes hours of getting the building ready, plus all the paper work, lining up all the workers, and again it takes the youth and their parents or leaders to bring us all together. We each need to say thanks to ourselves and our coworkers for a job well done.

We truly had a great YAD. There were 113 people registered for our show.' Table decorations, judges' gifts, and door prizes carried out our shell theme participating in our show were: four queen and four duchess candidates, one king and one duke candidate, 18 individual talent numbers, 19 youth in five group talent numbers, and 117 craft entries.

Each youth received a plastic name pin as a participation gift.

These were turned back to the DYC

21 to be re-issued at camp, this time to keep.

Again let me express my thanks to all who had a part in District VII YAD. It was through the efforts of everyone combined that this day was possible. We truly did break from our shells and participated.

Presenting roses to the 1978 Elgin Westerto Days Queen Miss Kim Williams :is the 1977 Queen Miss Gina McVay. Kim and Gina (both SPJST Yeatn ) are only two of 37 pretty young ladies who filled the Elgin SPJST Lodge with beauty, poise and fashion. The 36 girls competed in two categories, casual wear and evening wear.

We are very proud of our youth who participated in District II YAD, especially the number of participants and the enthusiasm each of you demonstrated; and let's not forget our winners, a great big hug to each of you! A hearty thanks to each of you who presented your YAD talent program and crafts at the mother lodge social in July. It was a superb performance.

Those of you who missed the Junior social at Camp Wuernecke really missed a treat. Eighteen of the youngsters enjoyed a beautiful day riding the rapids, especially when one of the leaders (guess who) ended bottom side up, on the first trip.

Thanks to each of you who labored so desperately on the SPJST float and participated in the many functions of Western Days. Our long hours in the sweet booth proved a success for our financial situation. Many thanks to the members and parents who contributed the many desserts to the youth and helped make our part of Western Days a meaningful contribution.

III (southern) youth club party was not as crowded as expected, but all who attended had the large West pool to themselves, almost. Our three top junior point winners from our lodge were: Karen Jochen, 1st place; William Janik, 2nd place; and Curtis Kieschnick, 3rd place.

Top teenage point winner was Dennis Veselka, 1st place.

We had five craft items entered: Karen Jochen won 1st place in Pictorial Arts, second place in Constructed Items, and second place in Handicrafts. I also won two 1st place trophies with my ScienceEducational project and my Hobby Kit. I wish we could get more of our youth club members interested in YAD; they really don't know what the are missing.

Fraternally, Dennis Veselka (15) (8-7-78) Treasurer - SPJST --LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its regular monthly meeting and outing at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6th at the American Legion grounds. There were 35 members and 28 guests present.

President Karen Kahanek called the meeting to order. The pledge was led by Jennifer Dluhos and the prayer was led by Melissa Zboril.

Under old business we discussed State YAD which will be held Aug. 20th in Temple. Read your Vestnik to see what time registration starts, etc. Then checks were given

We congratulated all the winners at District VI YAD. For new business we discussed the selling of sandwiches at the Aug. 13th dance and a trip to the museum, Aug. 14th. Afterward, we presented gifts to the chaperones for helping us at camp. We were asked to bring articles to Goodwill. For our next meeting we will have a back-to-school party. The program for next month is Labor Day. For our program poems were read about. Labor Day by Michelle Srubar and Karen Kahanek.

Miss Mary Mmustik, our adult lodge president, was our guest speaker. Then we sang the SPJST song.

Door prize winners included Jennifer Krpec, Anthony Kresta, Stephanie Royce, Kelly Fautilek, Yvonne Kresta, and Keith Kresta.

Afterward we played a game.

The winner was Kelly Korenek.

The meeting adjourned and then everyone enjoyed eating hamburgers, chips and cakes with tea.

Jerrie Skrabanek called the roll and read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved as read.

We received a thank-you note for our glass donation from the Women's Guild of Gerald Church.

Those who attended camp gave a brief report. This was my first time to attend camp and I enjoyed it very much.

We rode in the West rodeo parade Aug. 10th and 12th. We will have a float in the WestFest parade and a booth at the festival grounds.

Our youth club will be going to Six Flags Oct. 8th Our donations were to the Red Cross for the flood victims in the

Robinson drive for a family who lost two children in the flood in Texas, recently; and to the Arthritis Foundation.

Birthdays for August are: Assistant Youth Leader Rose Uptmor, Delores Dobecka, Denaria Perez, Shirley Dobecka, Karen Hykel, Larry Hromadka and Donna Rieger. Terry Hykel brought the cake for the birthdays and Delores Dobecka won the door prize and will bring the cake for the next meeting.

Our youth club received a letter from Mr. Nick Morris inviting the youth group that won District II Senior Talent at YAD to participate at the Texas Fraternal Congress Youth Spectacular Oct. 21st, at the Baker Hotel in Dallas. This was a great honor for us.

In our meeting we voted to go to Action World to skate Aug. 26th, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and remember to wear socks; if you don't then you cannot skate. The youth club will pay your way.

All winners from our lodge who are in talent and going to State YAD will have practice Aug. 16th at 7 p.m. and Aug. 18th, at 5:30 p.m. Remember, also that State YAD will be held at Temple Junior College.

Our District II fall meeting on August 13th will be in the past when this letter is printed, and so will our lodge party of Aug. 11th.

In this le ss o n, we will deal with some errors that are freqently made by Czechs in Texas.

KDE — KAM These 2 words are probably misused more than any other. We frequently hear, "Kde jde?" This is wrong. To indicate the physical action of going somewhere, the word KAM is used: Kam jdet? Kam jedeg? The word KDE indicates a stationary situation, and cannot be used to indicate physical action.

Ex.: Kde to je? Kde bydlite? Rile je nadrati?, etc. And using KAM, we say the following: Kam pojedete veeer? Kam prijdete po divadle?

Kam jste 011 po abase'? etc. All you need to remember is whether you are indicating action or not.

SEM — JSEM We call words like these homonyms; they sound the same but have entirely different meanings.

In English, some homonyms are: there, their, they're, bear, bare; and close, clothes.

SEM means "here" or `to here", with ACTION. Ex.: Went ptijeli sem. Pojd' sem! Dojeli sem KVastne. All of these involved action in coming or getting here.

JSEM means simply I am, or used with certain verbs, denotes tense, or time something happened.

Ex.: Jsem ui starii elovek. Byl JSEM na vflete v horich.

JSEM se dobie.

In speaking the above two words of SEM and JSEM, there is practically no recognizable difference: however, in writing it makes all the difference in the world. One means one thing, and the other means something else.

SPRAVA — ZPRAVA Here are two tricky words, both written and pronounced exactly the same, but again have two entirely different meanings. It is therefore important that we know how to spell the one we wish to use.

SPRAVA — means administration, or SPRAVKA, which is to repair; or SPRAVITI, which means

to fix or to repair.

Ex.: Statni spriva je umistena v Austin.
