FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, July 30t1• was District V Youth Achievement Day at Lodge No. 88, Houston, where the youth had the opportunity to compete in their skills and talent.

Approximately 100 entries in craft, talent and royalty kept the judges on a steady pace to decide the youths' achievement results.

While the judges were busy making their selections in the craft section, the assembly was kept entertained by fine talent and speech presentations by their three queens and two kings. Each royalty candidate had their own speech composition that focussed on the awareness of their future responsibilities and the appreciation of what the SPJST has done for them.

District V Youth Counselor Richard Wahlberg and his assistant, Dan Berry, are to be commended for their well-organized program for the entire day. A delicious beef stew menu, the beautiful rendition of the two National Anthems in Czech and English by Sister Helen Hegwood, the entertainment by the Choral Group and the Concert Orchestra of Lodge 88, the YAD competition with Brother Lin Lesak (the SPJST 1974 State King acting as master of ceremonies) the dance following the coronation ceremonies with good music by The High Country, plus the grand march led by Noel and Wanda Kennedy, filled the whole day's activities.

—Thomas Moore Congratulations to the entire District V for having one of the best YADs in their district; everyone who had a part in it deserves a compliment for a job well done! * • A great number of youngsters of the SPJST Society composed of talent and Beseda contestants, including craft entries from seven districts will be displaying their performance and artistic exhibitions at the State Youth Achievement Day, Aug. 20th at the Temple High School. Royalty competition will take place Saturday, Sept. 30th, at Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

This year we were able to attend five District YADs; from

those attended, we observed and viewed numerous outstanding craft entries as well as many fine talent presentations by the youth from ages 6 through 17. Even the sportsmanship keeps developing stronger and more mature and that is so important to our youth.

Now, brothers and sisters, the great responsibility rests upon the shoulders of most of us who have the warm feeling of our youth within our hearts, to attend, and we must continue to support the youth of the SPJST who will fraternally and unswervingly create more enthusiasm in the Society and who will create the largest and strongest youth department in the history of our Society. Not only morally, but physically and this can best be manifest by a great response, not only in the role of our leaders, but parents as well, throughout the state. * * District fall meetings are nearly upon us again. District II is the first district to begin their fall meeting Sunday, Aug. 13th, at Lodge 29, Taylor. Their meeting will be brief where more time will be devoted to their youth members with various types of activities. the past and quickly approaching are the dates of the official opening and dedication of Lodge No. 180, Burleson, scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 25th, 26th and 27th. They are planning a nice entertaining three-day affair. We hope that Lodge No. 79's three days were even better than expected and wish the same for Lodge No. 180. We hope to keep you posted on further developments as we receive them.

For a time it seemed that Hurricane Amelia may have an adverse effect on Lodge No. 79's opening, however, our membership certainly hopes not.

• The volume of mail we receive has increased greatly in the last ten years, as compared with what it was when we first came here in 1969 -- mail not so much for publication, but mail that has to be answered in writing. We receive letters about Czech lessons, Czech courses, trips abroad, West Fest, etc., and they all deserve answers, so please bear with us if we are somewhat delayed. Sister Sefcik and myself answer as soon as possible, however, some of the information we have to seek for you. We are always glad to hear from you.

In this issue you will notice an article about Czech classes at the Univ. of Houston. We encourage you to investigate these courses and see how they would fit into your college requirements. This applies to students attending other colleges and high schools, because there IS a critical shortage of Czech-speaking personnel.

NEWSBRIEFS Lodge No. 187, Round Rock, is holding their official groundbreaking ceremonies for their new lodge home on Wednesday, Aug. 23rd, at 7:30 p.m. The event will take place at the site on FM 1480, 2 miles east of 1-35 and 2/10 mile north, off Hwy 79, between Round Rock and Taylor. Supreme Lodge officers will be present to participate. After the ground-breaking ceremonies, a social will be held at the American Legion Hall on Hwy 79, just east of 1-35. (This is where the lodge was formally organized on Nov. 6, 1977). All members of Lodge 187, friends and guests are Ocordially invited.

MEET OUR NEW STATE FIELD MANAGER In their regular July quarterly meeting, the Supreme Lodge appointed an additional State Field Manager to work in the Insurance Department and under the Vice President. Brother Eugene McBride, currently serving as president of Lodge 25, Ennis, was appointed to the position, effective October 1, 1978.

Brother McBride is 40 years of age, married, and he and his wife, Frances Jo. have two children, Rusty, age 16, and Amy, age 5. Gene received his formal education from Forreston Elementary, Midlothian Elementary, and graduated from Bardwell High School near Ennis.

At age 16 he went to work for Hickerson Food Store as delivery boy. During the next ten years he was promoted to assistant manager of that store and finally, market manager. For the next twelve years he was employed as an independent distributor for Oak Farms Dairies in wholesale dairy products. In that position he operated three trucks and employed two men. After that, he owned and operated a Fina service station, specializing in mechanical work. Since that time he has been and is an independent dIstributor for Schepps DairieS. As an independent distributor he furnishes wholesale dairy products to 12 towns in the EnnisWaxahachie-Dallas area In recent years, he also engaged in the raising of cattle and has owned up to 120 head.

His outside activities have included serving as president of the Independent Cattlemen Association for one year and as a member of the Board of Directors for one year.

He is currently serving a threeyear term on the Board of Trustees of the Ennis Independent School district. He has received special recognition from TASB for his dedication to improving schools.

LODGE NO. 15, BUCKHOLTS Dear Members: The July meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 15, was called to order

by Vice President Ann Balusek, in the absence of President Joe Zajicek. All other officers were present.

The pledge of allegiance was recited by everyone present.

Secretary Charisle Svetlik read the minutes of the previous meeting which were accepted as read.

Treasurer Kathleen Jurca gave the treasurer's report which also was accepted.

The books were audited before the meeting, and an audit report was given by Viola Sevcik; the books were found to be in good order.

Other committee reports were also given.

On the sick list is Brother Louis Svetlik. If there is anyone else, please let me know.

LODGE . NO. 154, FORT WORTH Deax Members and Friends: Our heat and drought continues and the promise of rain never materializes.

Fraternally, Mary Pavey - SPJST — LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Guests: We had the Ram Rods entertain our dancing fans Saturday, July 29th. A part of the band got stranded on the way to our lodge, when their car broke down, so there were only three musicians in the band, but even though part of the band was missing, they did well.

I have talked to some of our members and we discussed how we could improve our attendance above what we are having presently. All of the people I talked to agreed that all the bands should have posters made with their pictures on it; this way our members could place the posters in various business places throughout our area, so the people could see who is playing at our lodge on any designated Saturday.

Before I mentioned the fact that we haven't increased our admission price since we opened the lodge facilities in 1973, and with every-

thing increasing in price, we need to increase our attendance to compensate for this inflation. We appreciate the members who invite friends, that way we will be helping ourselves and the ones you invite.

Again we had people at our lodge July 29th for their first visit. A couple from California, plus several people from Houston and Alvin.

We also had Travis E. and GayNell from Dallas, Edith E. Jake from Elkhart and, of course, many other members from far away places who are members of this lodge, who were in attendance at the dance.

Brother Leonard and Abne Hamlin were hosts and all the other workers performed their duties very well.

Always remember that our game night is every Tuesday, at 8 p.m.

Be sure to attend our monthly lodge meetings, which take place every second Sunday; this month's meeting will be held Sunday, Aug. 13th, at 3:30 p.m. Until next time, I am Fraternally, Chester Shmoldas - SPJST NO. 88 ON THE SPOT The Friday night dance, July 28th, with the wonderful music by the famous Nick Navarro Orchestra, which is always a very special night found everyone attending observing the dress code including the performing musicians, who looked extremely handsome in their tuxedos. It is a pleasure to watch the beautifully dressed couples swaying in rhythm to the lovely tunes on the Chandelier Ballroom floor. The hosting committee for the night included Brother Milert Antrich in charge of the dance with wife, Evelyn, in a rainboAr colored gown; she looked enchanting. John Zemko held the box office and Emily, his sweet wife was in an aqua chiffon, and Stacy Kocich, dressed in a becoming print, greeted the guests at the door while Benny Kocich with tilled and Evelyn, seated the guests.

They made a nice team.

Nine tables were occupied by a jolly group of guests of Mr. and Mrs. George and Doris Herring of Pasadena, to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Doris must have been a child bride; she and her husband, ;George, neither At

Wednesday, August 9, 1978 the 50-year mark; they look so young. Their two sons and two daughters made them happy with ten grandchildren and now they pride themselves with two greatgrandchildren. Attending this celebration was Mrs. Bertha McCrary of Temple, a lovely lady dressed in a blue chiffon gown and, at an unbelievable age of 80, was enjoy-. ing the 50th wedding anniversary of her niece, Doris, and nephew, George. The tables held beautiful flower arrangements. Wishing you a happy and continuous life; come back soon.

At Table No. 40 we had 12 Chinese guests; several are frequent visitors to our dances. To my surprise, I was informed by Mr. and Mrs. John Geinger that they knew and worked for years with two of our late brothers, Joe and William Zaludek; both of them were very active in forming what we have today; they are remembered and not forgotten. In this group Dr. Ho and his wife, Daisy, were present, also a visiting couple from California enjoyed the evening and commented on our nice facilities, which is always nice to hear.

Three tables were occupied by guests from Houston's surrounding towns, Texas City, League City, Friendswood, Dickinson, La Margue, Alvin, Clear Lake and Galveston by a dance club named "Two Left Feet." This club meets regularly in Dickinson at the Chapperal Club and, at special occasions, visit different places. This time the birthday of Miss Doris Norton was the highlight of the evening.

Alice is the sister of our lodge Vice President Tillie Helmcamp and sister to lodge Treasurer Viola Cox. The Texas Dutchmen orchestra played for a nice gathering Saturday, July 29th; the last dance of the month. This dance was a complete change from the night before.

The polka music is loved by so many and they follow this band for great distances. It is a pleasure to watch the enthusiastic couples on the dance floor and everyone was dressed neatly. 6 with Tim and Rosalee. While there they visited Weisbaden and Rudesheim (old towns of the 11th and 12th centuries with very narrow streets, but with lots of good wine, beer and delicious food and music).

Then by Trans Europe Express Train to Basel, Switzerland to visit their cousin Ben Kostomlatsky's family. With them they went to a resort town, Lugano, on the Italian Reviera where the lakes and mountain views are unbelievably beautiful and the well-known Church Chrischona, a seminary where Ben's father in 1914 studied for the ministry. By train they went to Brussels, Belgium. They visited the Bassuyt and Brugge and ancient town, the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The resort town of Knokke on the north sea was interesting, with thousands of people, mostly tourists, enjoying the sun. They visited WW I and II cemeteries — there are about 16 of them in Belgium. The Flanders Field American Cemetery is known to many of us Americans; all these cemeteries are well-kept by the Belgium government. The next stop was Antwerp, then Amsterdam and back home. After a leisure five weeks of travel, Tim and Rosalee are again involved in their daily routines of their home and mainly at Lodge 88.

Our hearts are sad and mourning the passing of our beloved lodge member, Sister Agnes Miculka. After a lengthy illness in the St. Joseph Hospital, she succumbed to a treacherous disease. Sister Agnes was a special and a wonderful person; she never complained and always carried a bright smile on her face for everyone.

Her husband worshipped her and they were a lovely and devoted couple who anyone would love to be with. Sister Agnes was a prominent artist and art teacher for years; ,many of her fine paintings were donated for the benefit of good causes. She passed away at the age of 57 years, July 22, 1978.

LODGE NO. 189, BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION Dear Members and Friends: On July 9th, our monthly meeting was called to order by President Wentrcek promptly at 3:30 p.m.

The minutes of the June meeting were read by Secretary Claudia Novosad and the officers made their respective reports.

This was our first anniversary and we celebrated by having Brother Nick Morris attend and speak at our meeting. We always enjoy having him visit and hope to see him often in the future. We also had a picnic with lots of good food and refreshments to be had by everyone. Horseshoes were also very popular that day. I hope everyone had a good time and that we will be able to do this again next year.

The members present decided that the lodge should start looking for a place of our own with some kind of building where we can hold our meetings and rent out to other social functions. I am sure this will be a very wise decision and an important step in the growth of our lodge. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to call an officer or bring it up at the next meeting.

The final draft of the Rules and Regulations was handed out at our July meeting and on behalf of the lodge, I would like to extend our appreciation to the members of that committee on the fine work they did.

Our next meeting is Aug. 13th and it will be at the same place, the KC Hall, at 3:30 p.m. Hope to see everyone there. Refreshments will follow.

LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Members and Friends: SPJST Lodge No. 13, at Dime Box, held its regular monthly meeting July 16th, at 2 p.m. in the lounge of the local lodge hall. The pledge to the flag was led by Flag Bearer Patty Tydlacka. This was followed by a moment of silent prayer in tribute to Brother Rud. Hejtmancik, who passed away June 25th, 1978. He was an SPJST member for nearly 50 years.

We were privileged to have at our meeting, one of our members from California, namely Brother

Frank Horak. He was visiting his brother, Albin Horak and family; do come again, Brother Frank.

The secretary read the minutes of the June meeting, the treasurer gave her report and the financial secretary reported on the mortuary fund; all reports were accepted as read.

It was decided by carried motion to lease the SPJST property to Cag Pet Co. It was also voted upon to get an emergency light installed in the hall to use in case of power failure, and also to purchase two fire extinguishers.

Brother Claude Flippin reported on the bar income for the second quarter. It was a very good and profitable report.

Several new rules and regulations for parties renting the hall were discussed and voted upon.

Anyone renting the hall from now on will be given a copy of these and the party renting the hall will have to sign them upon renting it.

The members feel this will prevent ;future misunderstandings as to what is furnished and what is not furnished when renting the hail.

Anyone having any comments or complaints concerning the hall is invited and urged to attend our regular monthly meetings and there present your case. We, the members, are always open for suggestions and we also want people to hear the members' side of the story.

Door prizes were awarded to Brother Albin Horak, Robert Spacek, and Frank Horak.

Our next meeting will be held on August 20th, at 2 p.m. at the local lodge hall. Please try to attend and bring along a friend.

Wednesday, August 9, 1978 LODGE NO. 187, ROUND ROCK Dear Members, Lodge No. 187, the Spirit of Round Rock, had a most enthusiastic chartering back in February and since that date you haven't heard anything from us. However, much work has been done trying to get a lodge building started.

Many times our "Spirit" has been shaken but after each disappointment the spirit seems to return even more so than before.

Ten acres of land two miles east of Round Rock, just north of Hwy. 79, has been purchased. Building plans were studied and, eventually, a plan similar to the Burleson lodge building was decided upon.

Plans for the swimming pool, tennis court and paved parking lot were eliminated, since we did not get the needed loan of $450,000.

Lodge members have pledged loans which have enabled us to proceed with the building. At a special called meeting on July 29th, the final papers were approved by the members and now the building will be started as soon as loan officials sign the papers.

Groundbreaking ceremonies will be held Wednesday, Aug. 23rd, 1978, at 7:30 p.m., followed by a get-together. Members and friends, let's show that Round Rock spirit, and let's ALL be present for this important occasion.

Being optimistic, we're planning for a completion date that will enable us to have a New Year's Eve dance in our new lodge home.

Fraternally, Wilma Peterson Secretary - SPJST — LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS SOFTBALL TEAM REPORT Tuesday night, July 18th, the softball team held their annual wiener roast party at Ida and Lionel Schulz's home in their spacious backyard. Most of the players, with their wives and children, attended and also our lodge officers and their wives, including our District III director and his wife. Some of the players and some of our lodge officers could not attend. We missed all of you, and you missed a wonderful party.

We wish to thank Sid and Justine Pokiadnik for donating all of those delicious Rudolph's wieners for the wiener roast. Also, our thanks to Ida and Lionel for let-

7 ting us use their backyard for the party; the place was ideal and also the use of their pool because the youngsters really enjoyed swimming and splashing water all over the yard. Thanks to the wives who brought desserts and dips. My thanks also to Lil Jarma for purchasing the buns, chili, beer, chips, onions, cheese and soft drinks for this event. It was a most enjoyable occasion. The fellows enjoyed pitching several games of horseshoes and the food was delicious.

Tuesday night, July 25th, the team held a batting practice and infield workout in preparation for the City TAAF Playoffs to determine the champion in the city's fast pitch softball competition.

We played our first game Friday, July 28th. We did not play too well because our opponent, National Motors, blasted us 13 to 0. The team just couldn't seem to hit and our opponents had 5 bases on balls, 13 hits and 13 runs. I promised our pitchers not to say any more. Offensively, Mark Winkler had 2 singles, Jerry Zabojnik had a single; Wiley Beesley a sacrifice hit, Galen Lindsey a single and Don Lennox, a single. By losing, we had to play again Saturday morning, July 29th, at 9 a.m.

Saturday morning, July 29th, we played Zip's team and we did a little blasting ourselves this time, getting 12 hits, 3 walks, and 8 runs to win, 8 to 0.

Lionel Schulz hurled superb ball allowing 4 hits, 2 walks, and had 6 strikeouts in shutting out the strong Zip's Paint team. Offensively, Don Jarma had a triple and a single; Jeff Burton, 2 singles; Jerry Zabojnik, 2 singles; Galen Lindsey, a triple, and a walk; Roy Andrews, a single and 2 walks; Wiley Beesley, a single; Mark Winkler, a single, and Don Lennox, a single.

Our team really performed well offensively as well as defensively, because no errors were committed and many outstanding plays were made.

By winning our first game, we had to play another strong team at 10:30 a.m. The team continued its fine play by beating the GSI team in 8 innings by a score of 5 to 4. Roy Andrews, our left-handed pitcher started on the mound, hurling the first 4 innings, but the heat and exhaustion took its toll,

mainly caused his hitting a home

run in the previous inning and the hard running around the bases caused him to tire out in the next inning. Lionel Schulz came in and relieved Andrews and hurled 4 1/3 innings of superb ball to come out the winner. Combined pitching statistics were 12 hits, 4 walks, and 5 strikeouts.

Offensively, Roy Andrews had a home run; Mark Winkler, a home run, a sacrifice hit and a. walk; Don Jarma, 2 singles; Jerry Zabojnik, a double and a walk; Galen Lindsey, 2 singles; Wiley Beesley, 2 singles and drove in the winning run in the 8th inning; Don Lennox, a single, and Ralph Stauss had a single. By winning our second game, we had to play again Saturday night at 8:30 p.m.

We had a nice turnout of fans at the three games and wish to thank everyone who came out to cheer the team on to victory. After the game several of the players and wives again went over to the Schulz's home and we enjoyed pivo, soft drinks, sandwiches, chips, etc., plus a delicious cake. Thanks to Ida and Lionel, also to Willie and Carlyn Ondrusek. I wish the entire team could have been present, but some of the players had commitments to handle before our Saturday night game. We also had cinched 4th place in the city playoffs and were now playing for third place at least or even second or first.

Saturday night, July 29th, at 8:30 p.m. we played Slender Now, probably the strongest team in Dallas and play we did. We outplayed this team for seven innings and would have beaten them, but for a poor call by the home plate umpire in the bottom of the 7th inning, when what we thought (and everyone in the park probably did too), was scored by Galen Lindsey when he slid across home plate beating the throw, but the umpire, after thinking it over for about five seconds, said "out!" Well, that is the way it goes and there is nothing you can do about an umpire's judgment call. Players from all the other teams told us they thought we scored, but that's how it went and there went our 3rd place trophy.

Getting back to the game, we led 2 to 0 for 5 innings, they scored 3

runs in the top of the 6th inning to g0 ahead, and we scored a run in

8 the bottom of the 6th to tie it up again, 3-3. The controversial play was in the bottom of the 7th inning and in the top of the 8th, they scored 3 runs and we came back to score 2 in our half of the 8th, falling one run short of victory. I must say I was really moved by our team's effort; everyone played an outstanding game. Lionel Schulz hurled another very fine game allowing 6 runs, 10 hits, no walks and 4 strike outs. Again, the team played errorless ball afield.

Offensively, Don Jarma had a triple, a double, and a single; Jeff Burton, 3 singles; Jerry Zabojnik, a triple and a single; Galen Lindsey, 2 singles and a sacrifice hit; Roy Andrews, a single and a walk; Mark Winkler, a walk; Connie Brennan had a single and was robbed of at least a double or maybe a triple on a very outstanding play by their left fielder, and Don Lennox had a single. Our team really performed well in the last three games. We played in this tournament and though we finished in 4th place in the city this season, we feel we are at least 3rd place winners (but no hard feelings).

Thanks fellows, for the fine performance turned in by all of you.

I am proud of you and so are all the members of Lodge 84.

Our next and last tournament, the ASA, Class A Tournament, will be played in Dallas at Kiest Park, which runs from Aug. 6 to 10th.

Our thanks also to everyone who came out and cheered for our boys, we really had a large turnout Saturday night, probably the largest of the season.

Fraternally, Mary A. Cihacek Reporter — SPJST — THREE BEAUTIFUL WEEKS IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA

By Otto Hanus Dear Readers: Last June we received an invitation from Mr. Miroslav Holub, president of the Czech Foreign Affairs Office and Mrs. Anna Istvancinova, the head of Matice Slovenska in Bratislava, to attend the celebration of the 50-year anniversary of the Czech Foreign Affairs Office and Matice Slovenska, and after careful consideration we decided to accept this invitation and go see the country our parents came from.

On June 26th, our son Daniel and his family took us to the Dallas-

Fort Worth Airport where we boarded a Braniff jet at 12:20 p.m. and arrived at JFK Airport in New York at 4:30 p.m., just three hours and 10 minutes. We transferred to the Pan American offices and boarded the jumbo jet carrying 450 passengers at 8:45 p.m. The flight started off great, but visibility was very poor due to heavy clouds. We met daylight about two thirds over the Atlantic and arrived in Frankfurt, Germany on schedule, where we changed to a smaller plane and arrived in Prague on time at 11:55 European time. We were met by Mr. Milan Hrusa of the Czech Foreign Affairs Office (CFAO ).' Due to a delay in getting one of our passports on time, we had to obtain our visas in Prague, and after this was done we were escorted

by Mr. Hrusa to the Park Hotel in downtown Prague and after we were checked in, Mr. Hrusa said he would be back in time for dinner.

Our room was on the 9th floor and was spotlessly clean and comfortable.

At 7 p.m. we were met in the lobby by Mr. Miroslav Holub, Mrs. Hana Vondrasova, Mr. Milan Hrusa, (all from CFAO) and Mr. Charles Pesek, a guest from France and we had a great dinner together discussing the coming events and our flights from our homes to Prague in a very friendly atmosphere. Mr. Hrusa, told us that after breakfast in the morning he would be back to pick us up and take us to their office.

The next morning, June 28th, we had a hearty breakfast with Mr. Pesek who was also at the Park Hotel and shortly afterward, Mr. Hrusa appeared on the scene and took us to their offices on Karmelitska Street in Male. Strana where we were introduced to many other guests already assembled there.

We had a late lunch and toured the historical parts of the city until 4:30 p.m. and returned to the hotel. Since there was nothing else scheduled for the rest of the day we shopped around near the hotel to see just what was going on. We visited several shops, and in-most of them we saw cards asking for help in, one form or another. The shops we visited were all clean and Weil, -sleeked witla,goods.

10 ping bag of some kind; there are hundreds of tramways and buses where the tracks do not go. There are hundreds of fine apartments to live in and construction work of some kind is going on in all the cities we visited. Their biggest problem is finding parking space for the thousands of autos now in use and more being added to the streets every day.

About 6 p.m. we returned to the hotel and went to our room. We were tired and decided that we would pass up dinner since we had a late lunch and many of the places we visited earlier had refreshments. We just couldn't eat anymore so we went to bed and had a good night's sleep. Daylight there comes at 3:30 in the morning.

Thursday, June 29th, we picked up where we left off, we toured the historical spots. On this trip we visited Zizkov, the national shrine and tomb of the unknown soldier.

This most beautiful memorial is on top of a big hill and is visible from almost all parts of the city. There is a large monument there of the largest bronze horse and rider in the world; it weighs 33 1/2 tons. If you should visit Czechoslovakia, please be sure and visit Zizkov, you will be glad you did. After visiting most of the morning we had lunch U Kalicha, a fine Prague restaurant, and after lunch we returned to the hotel where we checked out and were taken to the dormitories of the Electro Technical High School in Neratovice, a small town about 15 miles from Prague. We had a nice and comfortable room on the fifth floor. After settling down we were taken to the Youth Cultural Center for dinner, which was a modern, clean building. After a good dinner we were again taken on the bus to the Great Smetana Hall in downtown Prague for the great evening performance.

As we entered the great hall we were surprised to see the Czech students from Texas, accompanied

by Mrs. Jacobson of the University of Texas, and we enjoyed seeing them, which made the evening more enjoyable for all of us.

The program began promptly at 8 -p.m. with the 70 piece AMATI band playing some beautiful music.

We were welcomed by Mr. Miroslav Holub of the CFAO and the program began with some of the most beautiful performances this

VESTNIK writer has ever seen. Each presentation was flawless and beautiful.

There is no way I can describe the beauty of the great evening.

Friday, June 30th, our bus arrived and took us to breakfast at the Youth Cultural Center and for the remainder of the day we toured Prague's historical places. We visited Konopiste Castle where Jana Doudova was our guide and she is the best historian I have ever heard, she quotes history back to the early centuries in a voice that everyone could understand.

She answered every question quickly and correctly to everyone's satisfaction. From there we went to Visehrad and the National Cemetery where Antonin Dvorak is buried and many of the greats are resting. This is a beautiful cemetery, spotless and well cared for, full of beautiful flowers. The beauties of this castle are indescribable; so ended another great day.

Saturday, July 1st, we were taken on a full day of recreation at the Slapska Prehrada (dam). This tour was through the most beautiful countryside ever, between mountains of great green forests and fields of fine crops. We had a great lunch right on the dam itself at the youth center in a fine restaurant, the name of which I have forgotten. It was a great day for all of us.

Sunday, July 2nd, after a hearty breakfast, we boared our bus and started through the great city to visit Haskove Lipnice some 150 miles southeast of Prague, over a fine superhighway and beautiful countryside of fine farms, clean villages and smaller cities. We had dinner at Humpolee and arrived at our destination with hundreds of autos and buses already in a field below the hill. After parking we started to the castle on the hill and found several thousand people touring this great attraction. We finally boarded our bus and started from Prague and with so many weekend tourists on the road, we were slowed down because of the heavy traffic. There are thousands of autos on the roads over the weekends because the workers are encouraged to enjoy the weekends out in the open at lakes, rivers, mountains, and other points Of recreation. We finally arrived at Neratovice and the dining room with a good dinner

waiting for us, which we enjoyed very much.

On Monday, July 3rd, we headed for Lidice through a great countryside with beautiful crops growing everywhere. Upon our arrival we were met by Marie Supikova, another great historian, who told us the sad story of Lidice and after her fine talk we headed for the Lidice Monument at the foot of this famous hill where we placed a wreath of red roses. After this ceremony we proceeded back up the hill to the Lidice Museum which we carefully examined and later were shown a film df the atrocities commited there.

From Lidice we went to Terezin Prison where thousands were tortured during WW II. We were shown the rooms where as many as 150 people were confined, when there was room for only about 50 people. In front of the prison there is a cemetery with 7,400 graves of the victims who perished in the prison. Between each grave is a beautiful red rose bush, and when we were there they were in full bloom. That is a sight to see, some 12 acres of red roses in all their glory. Terezin is a dreary place even today. From Terezin we rode through the beautiful countryside of fine crops, on good roads, on our return trip to Neratovice.

Tuesday, July 4th, we had an allday conference of invited guests with the leaders of the Czech Foreign Affairs Office and workers from other institutions. This was a very friendly discussion of how the CFAO could help their countrymen in foreign countries. They asked us what they could supply to help us continue the education of all Slavonic people in our countries and carry on the traditions.

Wednesday, July 5th, we again boarded the buses to inspect the new parts of Prague and Metro, the underground railroad. After arrival downtown, several of us were selected for a conference with the people printing Ceskoslovensky Svet and television executives and the rest of the guests were taken for a ride under the city on the Metro, which will be finished in 1982, and should relieve the transportation troubles a lot. Indra, in person, and he congratulated Matilda and me on our 57 anniversary which we celebrated that day. President lndra is a great person who made us feel as if we were at home.

CZECH CLASSES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON In 1972, some very enthusiastic individuals of eight Czech fraternal organizations had a list of prospective students. In the fall of 1973, 17 students enrolled in Beginning Czech (CZE 131-3 credit hrs.), and 10 students in Intermediate Ozech (CZE 231). Both classes were taught in the evening.

Since 1973, approximately 400 students have enrolled in the Czech classes which have been increased to four classes at present, two in the day and two in the evening.

They are: CZE 131 (Fall) 132 (Sp) TTh — 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 5:30 to '7 p.m.

CZE 231 (Fall) 232 (Sp) TTh — 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The Czech collection in the U. of H. library contains 400 titles in Czech and English.

In the Czech classes, the instructor takes time to teach the fascinating history and culture of Czechoslovakia with music, films, and legends, as well as the language and grammar.

While taking Czech classes, one can also take advantage of these activities: —after two semesters you are eligible for a student grant to study Czech in Prague as a part of the annual six-week summer program at Charles University, which includes an educational travel experience through the culturally rich country, and transferable credit hours; with the Czech government paying all expenses, , except airfare.

—participation in the UH Czech Club, and its activities.

Loan-Scholarships. CESAT is the Czech Ex-Students' Association of Texas. It is significant to students who study Czech at the U of H because it offers educational loans at a very low interest rate. The

SPJST Supreme Lodge grants to the U of H Czech Studies $1,000 annually. The program is also supported by other organizations.

FEATURES BORCHGARDT-HAFNER WEDDING VOWS EXCHANGED Miss Betty Joyce Borchgardt and James (Jim) Hafner exchanged wedding vows at the Eben-Ezer Lutheran Church of Berlin, June lath, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon with Rev. Dan Zimmermann performing the ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Ed. W. Borchgardt and the late Ed Borchgardt of Brenham. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. (Rudy) Hafner, also of Brenham, and the grandson of Mrs. John Hafner and the late John Hafner of Ganado.

Wedding music was rendered by Laurinda Barnett, organist, and Johnny Kalbas, soloist, who sang "Wedding Song," "Wedding Prayer," and "Follow Me," Given in marriage by her brother, Daniel Borchgardt, the bride wore a Satalustre organza gown trimmed with beaded Venise lace on the bodice and sleeves and had a chapel length train. The matching Venise tiara held a fingertip veil of English illusion trimmed with Venise lace. She carried a cascade bouquet of pink roses, stephanotis, bride's white mums, baby's breath, English ivy and leather leaf fern accented the bouquet.

Attending as maid of honor was Flora Dell Borchgardt, sister of the bride. Bridesmaids were Marilyn Wilke, sister of the bride from Austin, Rona Nutt, Susan Hafner, sister of the groom, Amy Lancaster, niece of the bride, all of Brenham. Following the ceremony a reception barbecue dinner, and dance was held at the Silver Wings Ballroom. The bride's cake was a fourtiered angel food confection with pink, yellow and blue roses surmounted by a bride and groom.

The groom's chocolate cake was made to resemble the Silver Wings Ballroom topped with skaters.

Assisting in the houseparty were Dottie Schaer, Ruth Schulenberg, Debbie Jacob and Betty Witte, all of Brenham, Helen Franke and Sharon Bartos, of Bryan, Sandra Lehmann of Ledbetter, Debbie Spinks, Donna Blackstone, Genevieve Blackstone, Vicki Blackstone, and Kathy Dykes, all of Houston.

Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Hafner hosted the rehearsal party which was held at the K&G Steak House on June 17th.

The bride is a 1973 graduate of Brenham High School and is employed at the First National Bank.

The groom was graduated from Crockett High School and attended Texas A&M University. He is the manager of the Silver Wings Ballroom in Brenham.

Following a wedding trip to Las Vegas, the couple is making their home in Brenham.

Junior groomsmen were Bruce Bales of Houston, nephew of the bride, who also served as candlelighter, and Doyle Borchgardt, nephew of the bride.

Jimmie Borchgardt, brother of the bride, Larry Glenz, both of Brenham, Jami Bohn of Crockett,

and Tommy Fischer of Giddings performed usher duties.

Clint Borchgardt, nephew of the bride was the ring bearer.

The groom wore a white tuxedo with satin lapels and light blue ruffled shirt. His boutonniere was a pink rose bud, stephanotis and baby's breath. The ringbearer's attire was the same as the groom's.

The groomsmen and ushers wore light blue tuxedoes with velvet lapels and light blue ruffled shirts.

The groom's father and the bride's escort wore dark blue tuxedoes with light blue shirts.

Wedding bulletins were handed out by Jason Wilke and Chad Borchgardt, as the guests entered the church.

STATE YAD — SUNDAY, AUG. 20th, 1978 All Concerned TO: This year's State Youth Achievement Day (Talent, Arts and Crafts, and Beseda) promises to be another big day and milestone in the history of the Youth Department of the SPJST. It should also be one of the best we have ever had.

If you are a contestant in anything, be sure that you register in time or are in line before registration time is over. We are allowing more time for registration this year, but your cooperation is necessary because the people in charge of registration must then move on to other jobs. (The schedule for this day follows this report.)

Please do not put your craft in the display area until after you register. The lobby for the display is rather spacious where you will be able to wait with your craft until you are able to register. If you have a large craft or several crafts to enter, get your relatives or friends .to help you ahead of time We will again have large signs designating the various craft areas.

There are motels in the Temple area offering nice accommodations if you plan to stay overnight either before or after the State YAD. DISTRICT V YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT DAY Dear Members: My sincere thanks to everyone who helped, participated, and attended District V Youth Achievement Day, Sunday, July 30th, at Lodge 88, Houston.

The Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra and Choral Group held an outstanding performance before the YAD program began. Sister Helen Hegwood accompanied by Sister Naomi Spencer sang our National Anthem and Czech National Anthem after the colors were posted which made a very impressive start for our, program.

All competitions in crafts, talent and royalty were most outstanding including the Reseda group. In the point system contest, Patrick Bartos won first place, Joseph Bartos placed second and Kim Vanek, third.

The club members who placed in craft are as follows: Ages 6-9 — 3rd, William Rek, in Censtructed Items; 1st, Jodi Henderson, in Science-Educational; 2nd, Amanda Vanek in Constructed Items.

Ages 10-12 — 1st, Lori Henderson in Science-Educational and 3rd place in Handicraft-Miscellaneous.

Ages 13-14 — 1st, Kim Vanek in Constructed Items and 3rd place in Hobby Kits.

In Individual Talent, Amanda Vanek placed third on her piano solo, in age group 6-9.

Our scrapbook placed third in the competition.

July 19th our club held their monthly meeting at the home of Mr. Frankie Vanek. The meeting was opened with the pledge of allegiance by President Kim Vanek.

Secretary Chris Goerig read the minutes of the last meeting. Treasurer Jeff Goerig gave the treasury report. Veronica Bartos reported on the community report.

The youth who attended camp talked about how they enjoyed camp and what they did while at camp. They said that everyone had a lot of fun.

We also discussed our fall district meeting and craft to be made in the coming months.

Starting in June we have gained three new members: Denise Rek, Amanda Vanek and Lisa Sebesta.

We had three visitors: Lori Holub, Wayne Holub and Kathy Allgayer.

LOBOS NO. MP, IL CAMPO Dear Readers, Our youth club of Lodge No. SO, SI Campo, held its meeting for the month of July at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Vanek. The weather was so pretty, so we held our meeting outside in the backyard.

We voted to order Christmas nanients to paint for craft in the fall.

Birthdays in July — Amanda Vanek and Amanda Goerig.

We donated $28 to the, local hospital for a little girl who has a broken leg, so she could have a television In her room.

It was a great experience for us. Everyone agreed that the horseback riding was the most fun, but everything was just great!

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Youth Achievement Day of District VI is over and the Taiton Youth Club members won many awards and a lot of them will be going to State YAD. I won third place in Home Arts which made me happy, for next year I will work harder.

Resolution Committee: Della Miksch Dorothy Hensley Doris Knapick SPJST — EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 29, Taylor, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, EMMETT VANECEK, age 69, of Taylor, died in a Taylor nursing home.

Brother Vanecek, a retired farmer, was born in Granger and had been a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Taylor for a number of years.

Services were conducted at the Condra Memorial Chapel in Taylor with the Rev. David Bulgerin officiating. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Elvira Vanecek of Taylor; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Lehman of Austin; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Haisler and Mrs. Mary Millender of Temple,' and Mrs. Annie Bachoffer of San Antonio; five brothers, John Vanecek of Taylor, Joe Iranecek of Wetmore, Frank Vanecek of Temple; Ben Vanecek of El Paso and George Vanecek of San Antonio; and one grandchild.

JACK (JACKIE) WILLIAMS, who passed away July 6th at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston after undergoing heart surgery. All of Elgin was shocked and reacted with anguished disbelief. Jack's love of life with his light-hearted humor and ready wit, were his trademark and his many friends and loving relatives will long remember him in such a way.

Brother Williams was born in Houston in 1939, but had resided in Elgin for the past 31 years. He was a 1958 graduate of Elgin High School and served in the Marine Corps Reserve. Having worked at Texas Nuclear in Austin as machine shop supervisor for many years, he opened his own cabinet shop several years ago, and during the last four years had become well known as a quality home builder in this area.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. July 8th at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, with Pastor August Hanneman and Rev. Herman Engeling, officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, near Elgin.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Daughtery, Joe Hughes, Johnny Riddle, John Dunbe, Jr., Raymond Otto, Ricky Perez, Leroy Carlson, Roger Murphree and Jessie Cox. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Williams, editor of the Elgin Courier; two daughters, Kim and Tammy Williams; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank Williams, all of

Elgin; a sister, Mrs. Betty Dube of McDade; one brother, James F. Williams of Port Neches and his grandmother, Mrs. Isabelle Morris of Houston.

Resolution Committee: Albert Mikulencak Ann H. Mikulencak SPJST — EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, MRS. TILLIE MIKESKA, who passed away in the Bellville Hospital at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, July 16th, at the age of 73 years, 9 months, and 15 days. She died suddenly following a heart attack.

Born in the Nelsonville Community on Oct. 1st, 1904, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Maresh. She was baptized and confirmed in the Nelsonville Brethren Church. She was reared in the Nelsonville Community and attended the Scranton Grove Public School. She was a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church, the Christian Sisters of the church and the Bleiblerville SPJST Lodge No. 33.

The former Tillie Maresh was married to Joseph F. Mikeska on Jan. 7th, 1925 in ceremonies performed in Nelsonville.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph F. Mikeska; daughter, Mrs. D. E. (Loris) Briles of Nelsonville; sons, Connie A. Mikeska of Houston and Eldon D. Mikeska of Bellville; sisters, Mrs. Ella Mikeska of Houston, Mrs. Alford Renner of Bellville, Mrs. Presly Lewis of Woodville; brothers, Willie A. Maresh of Houston, Ed and Alfred Maresh of Hempstead; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one granddaughter.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 18th, from the Nelsonville Brethren Church, with Rev. Gordon Heil officiating. Interment was in the National Cemetery.

Resolution Committee: Mrs. Walter Schimara Mrs. Albert Fick Mrs. Casper Balke - SPJST -EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, LILLIE BROZ, who passed away Tuesday, July, 11, 1978, at Angelo Community Hospital after an extended illness.

Sister Broz was born Nov. 2, 1901, in Engle, the daughter of Joseph and Barbara Hoch. On Dec. 2, 1922 she was united in marriage to R. E. "Bob" Brea. They lived in California until 1930, when they moved to Rowena, where they engaged in farming in that community for eight years. In 1938 they moved to the Wall Community where they farmed for 32 years. When Brother Broz passed away Jan. 28, 1971, he was serving his 15th year as District IV director of the SPJST. Before his death he saw his dream come true of a new SPJST home office.

Sister Broz joined the SPJST on April 27th, 1934, and lived to see all her children, and grandchildren become members of the SPJST Society. One of her sons, Stanley, is presently serving as District IV director, and her daughter, Diana Pelzel, is a sales representative for Lodge 160.

Survivor's include a daughter, Mrs. Louise (Diana) Pelzel, Jr.; two sons, Warren Broz of Austin and Stanley Broz of Lowake; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Dorotik of Dallas, Mrs. Emily Liska and Mrs. Annie Filgas, both of Eureka, Calif.; also surviving are 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at 2 p.m. July 13th, in Johnson's Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. John Baletka, pastor of Wall Brethren Church, officiating. Burial was in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Her grandsons served as pallbearers.

Funeral services were held May 31st from the Knesek Funeral Home at the Gardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis, with the Rev. Michael Kroll officiating.

Burial was held in Orchard Cemetery.

Brother Staffa was a retired employee from the oil well drilling company and was a longtime member of our Lodge No. 28.

Surviving are his four daughters, Slyvia I. Flynn of Fort Worth, Georgia A. McGeorge of Houston, Lillian Gajewsky of Pearland and Anneth Hruzek of Orchard; one son, Edwin Staffa of Ville Platte, La., three sisters, Lena Vick of Orchard, Rose Dusek of Rosenberg and Bessie Tully of Houston; 16 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 2nd at the J. Leny and Brother Funeral Home, with burial at Port Bolivar Cemetery.

Brother Bertrand was born Oct. 12th, 1918, in Edgerin, La. He was a member of the Inter-

national Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 347, member of the SPJST Lodge 173, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie No. 48, and VFW No. 880; he was also a World War II veteran, having served in the U. S. Army.

Survivors include his daughter, Lanana Hall of Clute; two brothers, Oday Bertrand and Ernest Bertrand, both of Port Bolivar; four sisters, Lilly Jones and Lavinia Kahla, both of Port Bolivar, Editz Smith and Edna Owens, both of Sheppard, and one granddaughter.

Pallbearers were Charlie Abbott, Alvin Sefcik, Pete Slemp, tEdwin May, Jerry Kaluza and Louis Vanskike.

Honorary pallbearers included Babe Polambo and Jack Jones.

Brother Bertrand is missed by many friends who mourn his passing.
