FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK When we attended the District VII meeting quite •. number of the Lodge No 79 r..nd Sokol Corpus Christi members personally stated that, in the position as editor, our office is the best suited and situated to give them all the advance publicity possible and available and requested that we do so. We promised to do that and asked that they send all available information as soon as they had it ready; they have been very loyal and industrious about that and have shown that they are dependable, responsive and able to get things done. We printed the picture of their new structure on the front page last week and one of the employees in the printshop, preparing the Vestnik for mailing, made this statement: "You know, a picture is the best way of advertising; there are probably many of your members and readers who did not read the letters and articles about this dedication inside the Vestnik before or in this issue but they all will take notice of this on the front page and see the date and decide to go." We hope so.

NEWSBRIEFS Joseph F. Michna, of Wharton, passed away July 10, 1978, at the Gulf Coast Medical Center, at age 96. Funeral services were held July 12th at Holy Family Catholic Church; interment was in Wharton Cemetery. Brother Michna was a member of Lodge 63, Sweet Home, but formerly of Lodge 140, Hallettsville which was later disbanded.

He was the 36th person to outlive the acturial table of his SPJST life insurance policy. * * Agnes Miculka, 57, of Houston, passed away July 22nd, at St. Joseph Hospital. Funeral services were held at 12 noon Tuesday, at St. Jerome Catholic Church, with interment at Forest Park West, near Houston. Sister Miculka was an active member of Lodge 88, Houston, where she was a productive sales representative. She was also known for her outstanding oil paintings.

SUPREME LODGE APPOINTS ADDITIONAL STATE FIELD MANAGER Pursuant to the provisions of Article 37(d), the Supreme Lodge appointed an additional State Field Manager in the regular July quarterly meeting Brother Eugene McBride of Lodge 25, Ennis, was appointed to the position, effective Oct. 1, 1978.

Henneke of Lodge 42, with one application for $50,000. Brother Henneke is a new sales representative for Lodge 42, in the Brookshire area, so any of you members who know of someone who would like to become a member give Brother Henneke a helping hand. We have another new sales representative, Sister Anita F. Schmidt of Lodge 170, in the Freeport area, who also made her first sale; this area is also growing, so if any of you in that area know of anyone who needs insurance, she would appreciate any help you can give her. They are try-

ing to help the lodge there grow in membership.

Congratulations to all sales representatives for doing a real good job for the month of June; keep up the good work!

We have added two new sales representatives and they are Sister Edna Wehring and Brother Jerome Ermis,, both of Lodge 88; wish you both a lot of luck in the insurance selling field.

We have lost a sales representative in Brother C. P. Kern of Lodge No. 139, Danbury. I know the lodge has lost a good sales representative; he was a wonderful person and a sales representative for many years. Our sincere sympathy goes to the bereaved family; he will be missed by many. He made our seminars and banquets.

Sister Bessie Franek of Lodge 175 was in the hospital, but is at home now recovering. Sister Agnes Miculka of Lodge 88 is still in the hospital; let's remember her in our prayers and for both of you we will be praying for a speedy recovery and hoping that real soon you can be back at your insurance sales work.

Please circle these two dates; we will hold a class Aug. 15th, 1978, at Lodge 81, Needville, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 16th, 1978, at Lodge 88, Houston, 7:30 p.m. Try to be present, because every time you attend a class you will come home motivated and this will help you in your sales. Also, if you have any problems in your sales work we can help you. Just remember how many people still don't have any life insurance; you as a sales representative, can help and explain and plan their insurance program for them. Just remember to always try to sell them something that fits their pocket book; if you oversell, they will have to cancel their insurance and we try to keep our members and also keep informed of any changes they may have.

Wednesday, August_2, 1978 our Supreme Lodge Vice President Brother Joe B. Hejny. The news of his passing left me in a very deep state of sadness and sympathy for his family, relatives and friends.

I enjoyed working under Brother Hejny's supervision very much. He was very kind, always willing to pleasantly help you and was so understanding, and he was also a true fraternalist. We shall miss him very much.

I also extend sympathy to the relatives and friends of Brother Wm. Miculka of Moulton Lodge No. 184, who passed away June 10th.

Brother Miculka. was our sales representative and a former member of the Publication Committee, from District VI. He, too, shall be missed among us.

Pretty soon vacation time will be over for the summer and children will be back in school.

The drought here has really hurt all of the farmers and ranchers; the hay crop is very short. A good general rain is badly needed.

Now, you can see what you may miss at our monthly meetings, plus getting to be among friends and getting to know all the new members. It was so nice to see June and Walter Stewart at the meeting.

All officers were present at our monthly meeting, except Recording Secretary Vlasta Machann. President Peter asked Second Vice President Edna Voldan to take the minutes. All committees and officers had some real good reports to give.

MEMBERS ONLY: We will have a barbecue on the night of Aug. 25th; this is one night there will be NO guests, so if any of the members have a spouse or children who are not members, get in touch with one of our sales persons and get them into Lodge 172. There will be more details later.

Our dances are going great. The Rob Johnsons from Texas City celebrated their wedding anniversary, while Jim Kimmons, Louis Leham and Lee Lowery celebrated their birthdays. If any of you members wish to help sponsor a dance, get in touch with one of the entertainment committee members and they will explain it to you.

A person sure has to get out early to beat "ole Sol" if you take your morning walk, but I have found it is so nice in the morning to enjoy a walk and even though we live in

Pasadena, it is a beautiful thing to be close to Mother Nature, with the birds singing and all the lovely trees and flowers.

Recently, I heard the Binghams had a nice trip out of town over the 4th. Vlasta Machann is on a tour of Europe with a group of students. Joe, if you had mowed the lawn, you could have gone, too; now, you are having to stay home.

Don't tell Vlasta, but she said if you kept the dishes washed and the furniture dusted, you could go to Europe in the fall while she and the family stayed home.

The members will have to call and let me know any news that you wish to have spread around, because I am still having to stay close in, though I can work half a day now and I sure miss getting to go out to our dances.

I got to help Grandpa Malek, Willie Malek's father, celebrate his 80th birthday. It was such a nice celebration, I think the birthday guy had more fun than anyone.

Joe Machann and I took a hair dryer to the Golden Age Manor and you should have seen the smiles when it was learned they had a new hairdryer. rt is such fun to get to help deliver our donations from our lodge, our members don't know what you miss.

I saw Lucille Jackson and she, with her husband T.B., had gotten back from Hawaii.

Wednesday, August 2, 1978 LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear Readers: Our July meeting was called to order by President Edwin Marek.

The pledge of allegiance was recited and the members stood for a moment of silent tribute.

Sister Nelda Marek read the minutes of the June meeting.

Those on the sick list are: Mrs. Raymond Kovar and Frank Schiller. We wish both of them a speedy recovery.

The board report was given by LaVerne Cabla.

During new business a motion was made and seconded to write a short letter or invitation to the non-active members of Lodge 24, explaining to them what socials and dances are going on, and what their participation can do for our lodge.

It was also decided to give door prizes at the meetings. There will be two given to the adults and one to the youth; hopefully, this will help get more people to the meetings.

Lodge No. 24 donated $100 to the Rogers Little League toward the building of a new baseball field. A lot of the players are youth members from our lodge, and were proud of the fact that they are participating in community affairs.

Congratulations to Kelli Andel for being first runner-up in the District II queen contest; and for being chosen as a delegate to the State Fraternal Congress Convention in Dallas.

Congratulations also to Clayton Cable, Kelli Andel, and Sherry Malovets for receiving first place ribbons at District II YAD and getting a chance to compete in the state competition.

There were also a number of second and third place winners. Congratulations are also extended to each of you.

A barbecued beef dinner, including a drink, will be served FREE to members from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Prices for guests will be $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for children under 12. Members, please bring your membership cards; only members present will get free dinners. All dinners will be served from the barbecue house.

There will be entertainment outside and inside the ballroom. A good band will be playing outside at the Gazebo from 12 until 4 p.m.

Fraternally, Vernon L. Page SPJST — LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Guests: We had our lodge meeting July 17th. which was postponed from July :1 0th. President Johnny Johnson could not be present again because of his commitment at work.

First Vice President James McCullough and Second Vice President Larry Melson also could not be present due to their work; but, we had the meeting without these officers.

Sister Creola Wilcox, the reporting secretary, held the meeting and really did a good job.

All the reports of the officers and committees were made and, all in all, the meeting turned out to be a good one.

There has been a change in the time for our regular monthly meetings; this had to be done because our first vice president could not be present at anytime, due to his job. The time was changed to the second Sunday of each month at 3:30 p.m. There may be a fellowship and supper arranged, providing it would be desired by the members, so all the members who wish to suggest some ideas that all of us may be interested in, call Sister Creola Wilcox, our entertainment chmn.

We have lots of guests who came to our lodge for the first time and are joining because ,they can see that we have so much more to offer to our members than what they

can get by purchasing from another life insurance company; our life insurance is 100 percent fraternal benefit because it is owned by the members with other benefits of lodges that provide so much more.

I would like to mention only a few members who have just joined after visiting our lodge facilities for the first time: Oleta Faye Duff, a school teacher, Betty J. Schulz, secretary for Elkhart Farmers Coop. Virgil Edward Chisum, Donna Jean Chisum and Clayton Bernard Baker, plus several others who are being convinced that we have more to offer than what they get anywhere else and they are joining. Thanks for the job well done.

We had a record crowd (excluding the New Year's Eve dance); we had over 500 people attending our July 22nd dance. Everyone had a good time.

Until next time, I am Fraternally, Chester Shmoldas Reporter - SPJST — LODGE NO. 179, WARRENTON Dear Members and Friends: President Harold Bergmann called our regular meeting to order Thursday night, July 13th, and also led the group in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Ora Lee Wickel read the minutes of the previous meeting and took notes in the absence of Secretary Jeanette Schoenst, who accompanied the youth club swimming at La Grange.

Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report; both were accepted as given.

Dorothy Oltmann read the financial standings and names of our new members who are: Russell Dean Klump, Christine B. Klump, and Verline Virginia Bauer; they were voted on and warmly welcomed into our lodge.

For old business the meat committee reported on prices of various kinds of meat, but no definite price could be quoted because of constant changing of the price range. After further discussion the members decided to have chicken and sausage barbecue for our celebration in September.

For new business a committee

was appointed consisting of El Gene Eckermann, Dorothy Oltmann and Lee Leonhardt to take care of having posters printed and a number of other activities concerning our annual event. A number of indefinite plans were tabled for our next meeting.

The food committee reported that for our regular meeting in August, the lodge will furnish cold cuts, and if anyone wishes to add something they may do so by bringing sweets, etc.

On the sick list we have George Pfeiffer who had surgery and the group wishes him a speedy recovery and also decided to send him a get-well card.

We were happy to have a fine attendance of members and guests: among them were Mrs. Susie Harper and family and District V Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska; we hope they will visit frequently.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Following the meeting, Dwight Nittsche and Ronnie Sacks played selections on their horn and accordion. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Schelberg, Mr. and Mrs. Vastine Treybig and Mrs. Loraine Krause, part of the German Singers, sang for the group. The members wish to express special thanks for all this grand entertainment.

Afterward, hot dogs with all the trimmings were enjoyed by the group.

Our next regular meeting will be Thursday night, August 10th, at 8 p.m.

Our library has grown to the largest Czech library in the entire USA in one location and with your help we can make it even better.

Wednesday, August 2, 1978 LODGE NO. 29, TAYLOR Dear Members: The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 29, was held Sunday, July 2nd, at 4 p.m.

Youth members Troy Marx and Kevin Simcik presented the flag and President Adamek led the Members in the pledge of allegiance..

Secretary Mike Kaiser had the roll call of officers. Those absent were Viola Rafferty, historian; Bob Rafferty, parliamentarian; and Jerry Tallas, property committee.

Brother Kaiser also read the minutes of the last meeting and they were approved.

Treasurer Albin Machu gave his report.

Sympathy acknowledgment was read from the families of Mrs. F. W. Balusek and Frank Konakovsky.

A letter was also read about a musical drama presentation that will be held at the Temple Culture Activity Center, July 16th. The cast included Brother and Sister Anton Pokorny from our lodge.

New members received were Justin Moldenhove and Charles Elliott.

Get-well card was sent to Paul Pile who was injured in a car accident a month ago and was in Scott and White Hospital, Temple.

Under old business the blood bank mobile was brought up and President Adamek asked to table it until he finds out more about it.

At last month's meeting it was voted on that the senior members may bring non-members to their monthly social. Some members were not present to vote on this issue; so at this month's meeting, it was voted back that our senior members social be held for members ONLY. For the youth club report, Brother Steger reported that there were 30 members, 7 adults and 2 visitors present. He reminded everyone about District II YAD at Academy Lodge 177, Sunday, July 9th. He also mentioned that Donna Steger, Brenda Urbanek, Johanna Lesikar and Robin Rafferty will present their routine senior group talent number on stage at YAD. Since our last meeting, I undeistand that they were tied for first place at Academy Sunday, July 9th, and after another routine performance, they were selected in 2nd

11 place. They did a great job and so did a lot of our other youth members who placed in various places at YAD. Sunday, Aug. 13th is the date for our District II fall meeting at Lodge No. 29, Taylor. The meeting is slated to start at 2 p.m. It will be short and about 3 p.m. the youth will go swimming at the Taylor City Park and the adults may dance to the music of Jodie Jay and The Silvertones at the lodge, or you may play dominoes, cards or just sit and visit. It will be cool inside with plenty of drinks and supper will be served, so come out for a fellowship of fun at Lodge 29.

Members, please make a notation of the next lodge meeting which will be one week earlier: Sunday, Aug. 6th, at 4 p.m.

Fraternally, Da Mae Jansky Reporter SPJST — LODGE NO. 180, BURLESON I am sure everyone is hoping for relief from the hot, dry weather. We had a little shower Sunday, but not enough to do any good.

Maybe, little by little, it will start and build up to a good rain. The temperature was back in the upper 90s, the first of the week, which is better than the 107 degrees that we had the previous week.

If you read some of the previous issues I am sure you noticed our dances have been held at the Sons of Hermann Hall in Ft. Worth since our facility was not far enough along to have dances there.

We would like to thank the Sons of Hermann for letting us use their facilities.

Our July 29th dance was the first dance to be held at our new lodge home. It still is not complete, but it is far enough along to have our dances there from now on; so hopefully everyone will come out and have a good time. Aug. 5th, the Hub City Five will play, and Aug. 12th, The Light Crust Doughboys.

Our July meeting was well attended and we had one guest present: I. J. (Ikie) Kallus, who was visiting with Brother Leroy Ramp-

ton and family.

President Barabas reported that District III Sales Representative Alvin Nesuda was doing fine after his surgery and we all wish him a speedy recovery. He also thanked Brother Al Johnson for the flag pole he donated to be put outside our lodge home.

John Hammons, one of our youth was in the hospital but is home now and doing fine. Since our meeting I learned that Brother Rudolph Hrabal was very sick but is now home recuperating, and also Brother Bob Smajstrla who is home now following surgery; Brother Kenneth Nitsche was in the hospital, went home, and was taken back to the hospital. We wish each one a speedy recovery.

Sister Josephine Prochaska lost her father, Brother Joseph Vitek, who was a member of Lodge 154, Fort Worth. We extend cur sincere sympathy to her family.

Dear Members and Friends: The July 9th meeting of Sokol Corpus Christi was called to order

by President Gene Lehnett leading the pledge of allegiance.

A moment of silence was recognized for the passing of Brother Joe Dudzienski, a loyal, faithful and hard-working member.

Applications for membership accepted and initiated were Rose Eddins, Henrietta Foerster and Leo Veit.

Brother Gene read a card from Sister Frances Dudzienski and her family thanking everyone for everything done following his death.

Brother Joe had collected $49.00 from recycling of aluminum cans and social racks before his death; this amount was turned in for the new tables and chairs fund.

Brother John Stasa, unit honorary historian, at this time presented Brother Gene Lehnert, president, with a lovely wooden mallet for restoring peace and quiet to the meeting. There was an inscription plate telling this mallet was given in, memory of Brother Stasa's late wife, sister Albina.

The Program Souvenir Book has been very successful with sales totaling $5,185.00. There will be a memorial page and also a picture of our own late Brother Joe Dudzienski.

There will be NO reservations held or taken for Grand Opening and Dedication. The sales tickets for the car, a Ford Fairmont Futura (1978, V-8 loaded), will be given away at the Grand Opening of our new lodge building, which will be held Sunday, Aug. 6th; the winner does not have to be present to win it. A donation of $1.00 will be appreciated.

The Grand Opening Committee

held a meeting at 7 p.m. July 19th to divide the work between the membership. Brother Stasa was asked to extend Editor Rudy Sefcik an invitation to our Grand Opening; he and his lovely family have attended most of our District VII meetings.

President Gene Lehnert reported the paving around the new hall was done by L & R Paving Co., and he pointed out they did more than agreed on.

Brother Monte, Foster reported seven families had loaned $36,000 for this effort. There is a need for an additional $14,000.

There was a motion made and passed that we allow Sister Frances Dudzienski resume Brother Joe's spot on the Board of Trustees and his brother, Frank, to fill the vacancy on the Governing Committee.

Brother Stasa spoke in Czech at this time concerning this last meeting to be held in this old lodge building with fond memories of times past and how we have grown from pioneers of the old building, making it possible for us to grow through their time donated, and it effects many of us from years ago.

The new building will be a way to remember them and those who have worked so hard to keep our SPJST Lodge 79 and Sokol going to what it has become today. I was delighted to, hear that some days or nights, there were 30 workers working to rush the job, but, at the same time, there are some members who failed to come and donate a few hours of work or cash to the building fund. It is not too late and any type of help will be welcome, especially during the celebration days: Aug. 4th, 5th, and 6th. If you cannot help, come anyhow, and take a good look and be one of us to enjoy the ownership.

Every member of these two progressive fraternal organizations shall be proud of this building; it is a storm-proof, fire-proof masonry building. It is also a great tribute to the Bohemian Colony Land founded by Mr. Stanley L. Kostoryz, who was a school teacher and land specialist from Wilber, Nebraska in 1904-05.

I was pretty well taken care of these days. My son-in-law, Emil Mokry, came by Wednesday, July 19th to pay a visit to see my other son-in-law, Roy Peal, who is in the hospital recovering after an oper-

ation that he had Thursday, July 18th. At this present writing, he is OK and will be back at home in a few days. His son, Sam, from Houston, was with him for four days.

July 20th, at 7:30 p.m., the Czech language students had a song rehearsal at the American Legion Hall, with 19 persons attending this program. Mr. Joseph Blttersman from Victoria was also there with his piano accordion. I was invited to attend and met this enthusiastic group of people; it was wonderful to hear 19 voices singing. We may hear this choral group perform in the new hall at the celebrations.

Friday afternoon I was notified

by Lodge No. 79 President Frank C. Sa,eky that the Building Committee will meet at 7:30 July 21st to hold a meeting with District VII Director Bob Bayer from 'noresville, who is inspecting the new building and who will put the final approval on it. Everytime I walk into this new building, I always see someone there. The finest finishing touchup work (painting) is done by artistic sisters on a voluntary basis.

The weather is dry and the weatherman is missing his forecast.

The cotton is moving from the fields to the cotton gins and market A sincere and cordial invitation is extended to the public.

In conclusion I would like to mention again, if you have some pictures, literature, history or anything of oldtime value at home, we would like to display these items in the library room for everyone's view.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The Golden Banner Orchestra,

with good mixed music, entertained our guests Saturday, July 22nd, with a fair attendance. Hosting this dance were Sister Georgie Barcak in charge and taking care of the box office, her husband, Gene, with Clarence Ehlert, seated the guests at their reserved tables.

Sister Evelyn Ehlert greeted the guests at the door, both sisters wore lovely and very becoming gowns.

Brother Steve Kadera, after a week in Heights Hospital was taken home by his son, George Kadera, He is feeling much better and looks quite well after the scare of a heart attack; his wife, Lydia, is happy to have him home again.

Sister Annette Scranton also is fine after undergoing surgery in Southwest Memorial Hospital where she was confined for several days. Her father, Brother Bill Rezek, checked into the Heights Hospital on doctor's orders Thursday, July 13th, for a checkup and had to spend a week in Room 425, but is glad to be home again. Best wishes for good health to these members and all the rest of our brothers and sisters who are ailing.

Sister Annie Green was missed at the Saturday dance; she took off to visit with her grandson's family for one week at Stillwater, Okla.

Grandson David and his wife, Pam Kriscke, have a year-old son, who is the pride of great-grandmother Annie.

Our August entertainment calendar has two special dates for you to remember and it would be advisable to mark these dates on your calendar. First, our annual Homecoming Day, Sunday, August 13th; it is a day for the whole family to enjoy their membership at Lodge 88. Activities will begin at 11 a.m. Dinner will be served with a delicious barbecued beef, and all the trimmings, dinner and one FREE drink to each member.

Be sure and have your current membership card with you (there will be no dinners to go out).

Guests may purchase their dinner, adults $2.50 and $1.50 for a child.

There will be plenty of entertainment for children out on the picnic grounds and the swimming pool will be open. Under the gazebo there will be music from noon until 4 p.m. The lodge's Concert Orchestra will play for your enjoyment in the Ballroom from noon to 2 p.m. Right after the concert, a social will take place until 4 p.m. A FREE dance for everyone from 5 to 9 with music by Lee Roy Matocha. Plan on that date and come out to have a good time.

Again on Saturday, Aug. 19th we are featuring the big band music of Ed Gerlach and his 16-piece orchestra. Tickets are on sale at the lodge office; make your reservations and have your tickets in advance — get them before they are sold out!

LADIES' CIRCLE, LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH

Thursday morning, July 13th, President Anne Polk of the Ladies' Circle and President Marie Tesar of the Friendship Club welcomed members of the Dallas Circle of Czech Women at the entrance of the National Hall. After all visitors entered the building, they were presented a carnation, either red, white, or blue, decorated with green leaves to be pinned on each visitor. Guests had an opportunity to meet and talk with members of the Fort Worth clubs before lunch was served.

Tables to accommodate over 100 people were also decorated with vases each containing carnations of red, white and blue, with green foliage placed on white tablecloths.

Since this was a social gathering, no business was conducted. Presidents Polk and Tesar greeted the guests in Czech followed by greetings in English, and then introduced their officers. Also at the head table and in the absence of President Ella Bartos of the Dallas Circle of Czech Women, Vice President Anne Zvolanek accepted the

greetings in beautiful Czech and English, followed by introduction of the officers of the Dallas club.

Tickets were sold for many love1y gifts donated by members of the two Fort Worth clubs before a delicious luncheon of baked chicken and side dishes was served. Prizes were presented to those sitting on lucky chairs and all present were asked to turn their chairs over to learn if they were winners. A hanging basket donated by Sister Bessie Prochaska and a feather flower arrangement donated by Sister Florence Greer were the prizes.

A special mention should be made of the Old World desserts of kolache and cakes prepared by the Fort Worth clubs and if you did not eat all you wanted, it was your own fault. The Fort Worth ladies out-baked themselves.

We hope our visitors enjoyed the occasion, and we look forward to seeing them again. They are delightful, ladies.

We extend our special "thank you" to Sister Tillie Gillis and her husband, Arthur, for donating the pretty flowers. Their generous contribution made this social event a beautiful one. We deeply appreciate all the hard work the ladies did in the kitchen. Without their dedication to accomplish the necessary duties, the nity-gritty, no social event would be successful.

We thank all those who contributed their time and money to make this affair a success.

Sister Agnes Wruble is confined to Stanford Convalescent Center, 1617 Hemphill, Fort Worth 76105.

She does' recognize people who visit her, but is in a very serious condition. Sister Helen Zich is with her daughter, Mary Pulliam, 2415 Ryan Place Drive, Fort Worth 76110. She will celebrate her 96th birthday on Aug. 13th. Her mind is alert, and she does appreciate cards and visits from friends.

Sister Mary Palachek has returned from a European trip, and we hope that at our September meeting she will relate some of her experiences.

There will be no meeting of the Ladies' Circle in August. At the June meeting, the Circle voted to cancel the August regular meeting.

Hostesses for Thursday, Sept. 14th meeting will be Sisters Anne Polk, Clara Marchioni, Aurora Maldino,

Helen Paprskar, and Mary Botik.

Our get-together with the Ladies' Circle of Lodge No. 92, and the Dallas Circle of Czech Women was a huge success. The day was enjoyed by everyone and it is wonderful that a person can at least be inside and keep cool. The ladies said they enjoyed the bus ride from Dallas and were very happy to have been invited.

The presidents from the three groups introduced all their officers and the prizes were given away and then we all had a delicious meal, visited and played some games. We hope that they had a safe journey home and we will be looking forward to next time when they come again.

Wednesday, August 2, 1978 FAMILY REUNION HELD The descendants of Petrolina Prasifka, and the Haidek, Kucera, Novosad and Jecmenek families, which are related families, gathered Sunday, July 16th, for their 12th annual reunion, at the Amusement Hall of St. John's Catholic Church in Fayetteville. The attendance was estimated at 300 individuals, from Dallas, Fort Worth, West, Waco, Austin, San Antonio, Wharton, Jourdanton, Houston, Galveston and locally.

David F. Prasifka of Austin was in charge of making the arrangements for the meeting, assisted by his wife, Jay, also by Chris and Denise Prasifka and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Prasifka and others. A short program followed the noon day dinner.

The invocation was by Rev. Ben Mazurkiewicz of St. John's Church in Fayetteville. In his welcoming remarks he stated it was the largest family reunion ever held in his parish.

Clarence W. Fee of Galveston, accordionist, provided music for listening and dancing. Mrs. Irene Gavranovic of Galveston sang a solo as a memorial for the ancestors and other members who have passed away. Several members of the Czech Heritage Society's singers of the Galveston SPJST Lodge No. 173 sang a number of Czech favorites. Then followed a brief address by Charles Prasifka of Dallas. After his opening remarks, the following is quoted from his speech: "We have gathered here in Fayetteville today as a tribute to our ancestors, who as immigrants from Moravia, Czechoslovakia, settled in this particular area over 100 years ago, and we are thus paying homage and honoring their memory. It is they who made it possible for us to be born American citizens. As good Americans, too, we are equally as proud of our Czech heritage because our forefathers suffered hardships, had to work hard for themselves and their families to survive, thus making it possible for us to be here today.

While they found it as a land of opportunity, it was not over-flowing with 'milk and honey.' These pioneer immigrants, with a humble beginning, settled on raw lands, which I understand had to be grubbed and broken, shelters built

and the land tilled with crude implements. They did not have tractors and disc plows like the present-day farmer. I feel that you are with me when I say we are eternally grateful to them for the hardships they suffered for us.

In other words, we are mindful of what our ancestors did for us„ and that is why we are meeting in Fayetteville today."

The oldest member attending was Joseph Wechita, age 87, and still able to dance the polka. Also he and his wife, the former Mary Prasifka, have been the longest married couple — 63 years. The rest of the program was devoted to dancing and visiting of relatives together. Corpus Christi was named as the meeting site for the next reunion in 1979.

EMIL E. MATULA, JR. GRADUATES FROM TRINITY UNIV., BEGINS ARMY SERVICE Emil E. Matula, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil E. Matula, Sr., 303 Gayle Ave., San Antonio, graduated from Trinity University, recently, with highest honors, carrying a 3.9 average for the four years of college at Trinity. Brother Matula received a bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering and was commissioned a 3nd lieutenant in the U. S. Army.

Brother Matula selected the Army Armored Tank Corps and is presently attending a 17-week advanced officers' training school at Fort Knox, Kentucky. After completion of his advanced training Brother Matula will be assigned to the Armored Division Training Command at Ft. Knox, Ky. Brother Matula is a member of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio, KIT Lodge No. 102, San Antonio, Holy Name Parish, a graduate of Holy Name Grade School, St. Margaret Mary Jr. Grade School, and Central Catholic High School. On graduation from Central Catholic HS, Brother Matula won a scholarship to Northwestern University of Chicago, Texas A&M University, Rice University, and a ROTC' scholarship from the Army and the Navy.

Brother Matula selected the Army ROTC scholarship and also selected Trinity University as his choice of college. He received great

AUSTIN'S TENTH ANNUAL CZECH AQUA FEST AUGUST 4th, 1978 To accommodate the ever-growing large crowd, the location has been moved this year from Fiesta Gardens to the beautiful Municipal Auditorium Shores on Town take at Riverside Drive and South First in Austin.

This unique Czech Fest is held on the eve of the KJZT State Convention, and begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 4th.

An 18-member steering committee has met monthly for the past year, making plans for this celebration which is now receiving national acclaim. The captains are Alice Kubacak and Johnnie Polasek.

The dinner chairmen who are ready to serve at least 1000 plates are: A. J. Kutach and Gene Kutach. Dinner ticket chairmen are Leroy Kubacak and John Migl.

Frank Tomasek and Edwin Tschoerner will have their crew cooking 1,200 lbs of sausage on the grounds.

Kolache booths are being supervised by Frances Tomasek and Lorenda Polasek, on a first-come, first-serve basis, with over 400 dozen kolache.

Martha Tschoerner and Evelyn Havelka will be in charge of keep ing the iced tea cups full, as well as coffee.

The work committee, Odie Hamilton, and Ed. Havelka, is responsible for providing volunteer workers.

Heritage Booth will be manned

by Alice and Raymond Prasatik and their assistants.

The third printing of the KJZT No. 93 cookbook will be available at the Heritage Booth.

DISTRICT VII YAD A SUCCESS Dear Members: The youth, youth leaders, and parents of District VII made a very good showing at their District YAD at Lodge 107 near Floresville on Sunday, July 23rd. There were approximately 100 craft items displayed, covering all except one or two categories, four queens and one king in the royalty competition. All ages were represented in the talent competition. All of the participants were good.

DYC Sister Maxine Pavliska will have a detailed report soon listing all of the participants and how they placed in all of the categories.

Accompanying pictures are only those of first place winners in all competitions. (We failed to get a picture of Brent Hrncir, president of the Youth Club at Lodge 117, Robstown, which was awarded first place in the scrapbook contest).

Despite the lack of air-conditioning, the lodge hall where the event took place was well ventilated with "natural air-conditioning," especially after the gusts of cool air from nearby showers picked up later in the afternoon. All in all, it was a very pleasant day. There was a nice crowd of adult supporters, but it is realized that an attempt must be made to expand the youth representation beyond the three lodges that were represented that Sunday — 107 Floresville, 117 Robstown, and 161 Jourdanton. There is no shortage of talent in District VII; there must simply be the increased awareness that, first of all, a youth program exists, and secondly, how the adults and youth can both benefit by direct participation.

We commend Sister Pavliska and her assistant, Sister Polly Bayer, for putting together this YAD. Thanks also to Susan Pavliska and District Director Bob Bayer for helping us out with the picture line-up- and Sister Dorothy Morris for taking the names. Dear Readers, Thursday, July 6th, the Robstown Youth Club took a tour of the Naval Air Station. We met at the Jackson Woods Scout Hut and then went by bus to the Naval Air Station. The tour was interesting and informative. Following the tour we went to the Corpus Christi South Beach for a swim and a picnic. We returned home at about 5 p.m.

Some youth members stayed to help clean up the bus which was really a lot of fun because it ended in a free-for-all water fight.

Sunday, July 16th, the youth club held their regular monthly meeting at the Scout Hut. The meeting was called to order by President Brent Hrncir. This was followed by the reading of the minutes and the roll call by Secretary Frances McDonald.

NO, 169, BRENHAM Dear Readers, District camp at Val Verde is over for another year for Districts I and IV. It was a fun time enjoyed by all. We participated in activities such as swimming, craft, indoor games, hiking, tennis, volleyball, and horseback riding. We also had free time, a Hillbilly Heaven party, and a dance for the seniors. We were treated to guitar playing and singing by Albert and Bobby MI -kulin,athrog ecampsion.

Being from District I, it was nice meeting some new people, those from District IV. Despite being a very small group of campers, they fitted in just right with our large district.

Dear Readers, At our last meeting, July 16th, we had two visitors.

The secretary's minutes were read and a couple of minor corrections were made.

Then the treasurer's report was given and the amount in the bank is $2,669.00.

Old business was looking into the possibility of getting a projector. This will cost us about $1,000.

We are going to try to have it by our next meeting in August.

New business was about looking into the possibility of buying some land to build tennis courts on; also, our trips this year will be to Astroworld in Houston and San Antonio. The trips are now being planned.

Districts I and IV went to camp July 21st.

The door prizes were won by Doedee Beaman and Lee Dobos.

Dear Readers, The Hallettsville Youth Club of Lodge No. 4 held their regular meeting Sunday, July 9th. The meeting was called to order by VP Denise Vasek.

We discussed and made final plans for District VI Youth Achievement Day for our scrapbook and who all would be going to Hillje to attend YAD. The youth club is also making plans for our Family Day, which will be held Aug. 13th at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville.

The money-making project will be social games for all ages. We are

looking forward to this day and we will get to see more members, also everyone is looking forward to a good time.

I am proud of our youth club because it placed first in Youth Club of the Year and in scrapbook of District VI. The committee did a great job for it took a lot of hard work and planning to make it look outstanding.

Congratulations to Janell Chudej for being in the number one place in crafts, ages 10-12 She will go to State YAD at Temple, Aug. 20th. Good luck, Janell!

Our charity for this month was undecided as to what we will give and to whom.

Jerrie Ann Skrabanek called the roll and read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved as read. There were 33 members present.

We then discussed YAD and camp. YAD was held July 9th, at Academy.

We then discussed our trip to Six Flags. A date is not exactly planned. Dues were collected.

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members, We held our lodge picnic July 16th. All of us worked hard, and although the temperature was a scourching 107 degrees, we made it through the day. After two days of hard work, we were all ready for a rest.

We will start practicing the Beseda for West Fest, which we will perform with many other groups.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, in be half of our membership, express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, JOE VITEK, who passed away Monday, July 3rd, at the age of 81 years.

Brother Vitek was born in Rosebud, Jan. 7th, 1897, and was a retired carpenter. He was an SPJST member since 1915 and a member of the WFLA, and the Ozech Moravian Brethren Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Josephine) Prochaska of Azle, Miss Beatrice Vitek of Mexia; two step-daughters, Mrs. Mathilda Rozacky of Granger, Mrs. Frances Tobola of Penelope; two step-sons, Frank J. Gorubec of Clovis, Calif., Hubert Gorubec of Granger; a brother, Frank Vitek of Temple; three sisters, Mrs. Rosie Pechal of Temple, Mrs. Janie Zvonek of Houston and Mrs. Frances Adamek of Dallas; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Rosary was recited July 4th at Cy Rone's Funeral Chapel, Azle, with Father Whitfill officiating.

Services were held at the Czech Brethren Church at Granger, July 6th, and interment was in Granger Cemetery.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, JOHN WILLIAM KUBIN, who passed away May 16th, 1978, in Pike, at the age of 62.

Brother Kubin lived in Dallas, and was in business for himself.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 84.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Kubin, Dallas; a sort, John Wayne Kubin, of Dallas; daughters, Margaret Ann Cole, of Ellis County, Gwendolyn Lee Johnson of Garland; four grandchildren, and sisters, Rose Proza of Dallas, Annie Trojaceit, Louise Polasek, Emile Kubin and Agnes Ozymy, all of Ennis.

Services were held May 18th, in the chapel of Sparkman Hillcrest Northwest Highway in Dallas; officiating was Rev. Dr. Dudley Dancer. Interment was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and his memory live among us forever.

He leaves a wife, Luella Terrell; sister, Nancy Bricker, three stepchildren, 12 grand-children, three great-great-grandchildren‘ plus many nieces and nephews.

Brother Terrell was a member of the First Baptist Church where he was secretary of his Sunday school class for many years. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 151 for 24
