FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK The District II YAD was held Sunday, July 9th, at Lodge No. 177, Academy, before a large and attentative audience of adults and youth. The competition was keen and there were many entries in many categories and it was a nice evening well spent for anyone who has interest in our youth. DYC Frank Klinkovsky deserves to be complimented for his work and arrangement of the schedule. SYD Dorothy Massey and he had the program well planned, however, some tie-breaking repeats delayed the schedule. Brother Klinkovsky has the results in the DYC reports, and the pictures are also in this issue. Needless to say, the weather was very hot; about 102!

The membership of Lodge No. 177 proved to be very gracious hosts, as usual, and District II Director Henry Vitek and the District II youth leaders had their hands full also in the tabulating department.

Your editor's memory goes back to the 1956 convention in Temple when the youth department was organized. Yours truly was among those delegates who felt that we were losing our youths' interest and they were going to other activities and other organizations; the idea caught on and assistance and support for our youth was voted on and passed. As a prudent investor, you probably have life insurance to help pay estate taxes on your holdings, so your executor won't be forced to sell you securities or real estate in order to raise cash for taxes.

Providing liquid funds for estate taxes and other final expenses is an important function of life insurance.

It's also an important reason why you should review your insurance program. regularly (at least every two years, if not oftener). Changes in market value of investments affect taxes payable at death.

And securities and real estate aren't the only assets that rise (or fall) in value, thereby causing estate problems.

Among other examples are personal items, such as art, heirlooms or hobby collections. Although you may never have thought of these in terms of capital appreciation, they might turn out to have surprising value when your executor gets an appraisal.

For instance, there is that coin or stamp collection you painstakingly assembled in your youth, but haven't touched in many years.

Or the antique china and crystal that came as a wedding gift. You rarely used it, and now it is stored away in a cabinet or is gathering dust in the attic.

You probably have no idea what these items are worth. They likely have little more than sentimental value. But it is possible an expert might appraise them in thousands of dollars.

NEWSBRIEFS Lillie Bros, '77, passed away in the San Angelo Community Hospital on July 11, 1978. Funeral services were held from the Johnson Funeral Home in San Angelo on Thursday, July 13th. Sister Broz was the widow of the late SPJST District IV Director R. E. Broz and the mother of the present District IV director, Brother Stanley Broz. She had been in ill health for some time.

District III members, you did yourselves proud at the YAD and Royalty June 25th, 1978, at Lodge 84, Dallas.

This was the first SPJST District YAD Viola and I attended. We are both bursting with pride at what we witnessed. Our youths are very talented indeed, in so many ways.

I won't even try to put into words the many presentations of the day.

People just have to see for themselves the many accomplishments of our youth.

Congratulations to all our winners, our participants, parents, local youth leaders, district Youth Counselor, State Youth Director, judges, and anyone else who helped make the day such a tremendous success.

Attending a YAD is a sure way to lift anyone's spirit and pride in this organization.

Dr. Easterling presided over the meeting. Minutes were read and approved by Secretary Diane Howie.

Andre Schwab gave the treasurer's report. We had 34 new members and one transfer from Lodge 88, Houston. The names were presented for membership by Jacquelyn Wakefield, financial secretary, and all were accepted.

Fern and Robbie Robinson gave a report on the food booth at the Fourth of July Celebration, which was very much a success, even though they were handicapped in getting the electricity to the booth

We certainly do appreciate Ted Hardin and his band because they are our No. One band, who come dressed up well, which is very important to all of us in a respectable public place.

During this dance Terri Wilcox worked in the ticket booth, Creola Wilcox was the hostess at the front door, James Wilcox, Glenn Wilcox, Billy Bobalik, worked in the refreshment department. A motion was made, seconded and passed that any member violating the Alcoholic Beverage Commission law by bringing alcoholic drinks into this lodge building or allowing their guest(s) to do so or refusing responsibility of designated duties assigned (meaning working or seeing that someone is there to work, when their name comes up) would automatically be subject to a two-month suspension from Lodge 188 activities.

Youth Leader Emma Bass reported that there would be a youth dance with Mark King, disc jockey from Dallas, Friday, July 28th, with a charge of $2.50 per person.

There will be a "Ma and Pa Kettle" movie shown very soon; watch the Vestnik for the date.

The next meeting will be on the third Monday, Aug. 21st, at 7:30 p.m.

Financial Secretary Ruth Wuensche gave her report on premiums and dues collected.

We have one new member, Stephen Vorwer.k. We welcome this young man to our lodge.

All the members decided to have a wiener roast at the next meeting.

Sharon Beran volunteered to bring the items for the wiener roast and divide the cost among the members. Also, following the wiener roast we will have homemade ice cream, provided by members who volunteered to bring it. Members are asked to bring guests. It was decided to have our meeting Saturday, Aug. 5th, at 7 p.m.

There was no further business.

LODGE. NO. 177, ACADEMY Dear Members and Readers, The July 12th meeting of Lodge 177 was called to order by President Bill Hutka.

All officers were present, except Vice Presidents Joe Cantu and Rae Lisenbe.

Sister Dorothy Massey stated that Brother Stanley Broz had a death in his family: his mother died. Lodge No. 177 sends their deepest sympathy.

Reports of all officers and committees were given and all were good.

The board of trustees met July 8th and several items were on the agenda. It was stated that the frontage to our lodge will be enclosed and Mr. John Cox has been contacted. Also, President Bill Hutka is going to check and see when we can go see the Dallas Cowboys play football. Last year the membership approved the char tering of a bus to make the trip and here's hoping we will do this again this year.

Entertainment Chairman Jerry Tomastik reported that the entertlainment bookings are filled with good bands. In addition, he also stated we have very few Saturdays that are not booked.

President Hutka expressed his great appreciation to those members who worked Sunday, July 9th, at District II YAD. Without these faithful members, we would not have had such success. He also gave much praise to our youth

Sales representatives Willie Dusek and Louis Driska are doing a fine job getting new members. We appreciate this very much and without our sales people there wouldn't be any lodge members.

We have two new members, Judy Lynn Bennett and Mary Lou Soudelier; and Woody Feaster took out additional insurance. We had one transferee, Rose Mary Bland, from Lodge 47, Seaton. Thank you members; we are glad to have you at Academy. We had tivvo of our new members attending our meeting for their first time, they were Mr. and Mrs. La Fmme. It was nice having you among us and please come back. It is just like our lodge president stated, "You are welcome and we would be very pleased if you would feel free to help us with some of our lodge activities."

We then voted to hold a covered dish supper with homemade ice cream, Aug. 11th. Our lodge will have another meeting before this event takes place, but I will tell you about it now, so please make plans to attend. Everyone may bring guests, however, be sure to bring enough food for them. If you have an ice cream freezer, kindly make some ice cream and bring it along to the lodge. President Hutka also mentioned that he will try to obtain a band for that night. Do make plans to attend because we always have a good time, with plenty of food at our parties.

There were 52 members and one visitor present.

All of us stood and recited the pledge of allegiance to our flag.

Then we held a moment of silence for our departed Brother Joe Cilny.

Roll call of officers was held and officers' reports were given.

Fraternally, Alice Jochen Secretary - SPJST — LODGE NO. 38, BOYAR Dear Members and Readers: Members and non-members are cordially invited to attend the Kovar picnic, supper, auction, and dance which will be held Sunday, Aug. 6th. At 4:30 p.m. supper will be served consisting of fried chicken, country sausage with all the trimmings; plates will be $2.50 for adults and $1.25 for children under 12 years of age.

Auction will follow (or intermingled with supper) with some choice items such as handmade afghans, hanging baskets, gift certificates, to name a few. Thanks to the merchants of Smithville and the people of the community.

Special thanks to Governor Dolph Briscoe and the Texas Highway Department for the state signs for Kovar which we now have on the highway so no one should miss the way to our picnic.

The dance at night with the People's Choice will be the highlight of the evening hours from 8:30 to 12:30, with refreshments sold at the bar throughout the entire evening from 3 p.m. to midnight. Sister Maria prill arrived home safely from her trip to Germany but Friday she is leaving again for another 45 days, so that is a good sign she enjoyed every minute of it and her family there thought her stay was too short. We wish you a safe journey.

The treasurer's and financial secretary's reports were not very favorable. Chairmen's reports were also given. Audit report for the two quarters was given by chairman, Brother Jerry J. Mikulas, Jr. Board minutes were read by Sister Lillian Kosarek. The lodge tractor and shredder were sold to the highest bidder.

President Klusacek stated that the picnic is at hand. The lineup for Sunday, July 23rd is --- 12 noon, opening of the bar and kitchen, until 10 p.m.; 12:30 p.m., the first performance by Der Rheinsteins of Cameron; 1:30 p.m., proclamation program and the Seaton Choral Club performance; 2 p.m., second segment of Der Rheinsteins music; 3 p.m., Seaton Brass Band; -6 p.m., free dance with the Vrazel Polka Band playing until 10 p.m.

Barbecued chicken and sausage plates will be available from noon until? Games for young and old will be held in the evening. Setup for the picnic is Saturday, July 22nd and clean-up is Monday, July 24th. The lodge sisters are being asked to donate sheet cakes or kolache as the dessert for the barbecue plates. Brother Nick Morris requested that the lodge hire a caterer for the State Royalty, Saturday, Sept.

30th. He wished to have this settled at least six weeks before the event, so he can advertise' all the details at once.

The original plans for this year's annual picnic was to charge admission to the dance at night, but by a vote of 44 to 11, with 11 abstaining, the membership reversed the board's recommendation and t he dance will, again be free for the 15th consecutive year, with the Vrazel Polka Band providing the music every year.

Brother Leslie Mesecke was elected as a lodge sales representative, so we are proud that he is willing to sell insurance to increase our membership. Good luck, Leslie!

Youth Leader Evyon Kurecka gave her monthly report. The local king candidate was Josef Morris, a runner-up for the District II title and Michael Morris was his duke.

The queen contestant was Dianne Skrabanek and Stephanie Mikeska was her duchess. The competition was keen and I would not have wanted to be a judge. Point winners for Lodge 47 were announced and their checks were distributed.

Sister Helen Vrla, Jr., informed me that The Czech Dancers in Review, composed of 26 members, have been invited for the third time to participate in the Texas Folk Life Festival at the Institute of Texas Cultures at San Antonio.

This is the schedule: Aug. 5 — 2 p.m., on Stage 5, 4 p.m. on Stage 5, 8:30 p.m. on Stage 2. Aug. 6— 1:30 p.m. on Stage 5, 3:30 on Stage 2.

Our No. 3 son, Sam Roberts, informed us that he became a new member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. It's good to see the younger generation take an interest.

Next month there will be a substitute reporter. I know you will enjoy her report. I will be thinking of all of you while roaming around on foreign soil. Hubby Tom and I will be departing this month on our second honeymoon for a few weeks in Europe. Also we will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary two months early. We are looking forward to meeting my relatives in Kladno (near Prague), Czechoslovakia, whom I have never seen.

Fraternally, Alice Roberts English Reporter - SPJST — LODGE NO. 173, GALVESTON Dear Members and Friends: Our last meeting was held July 16th at the KC Hall, 501 Delaney Street in La Marque.

We lost one of our lodge members, Brother Joseph Bertrand who was burned to death in an explosion and fire at the Texas City Refinery, Inc., at Texas City, May 30th, 1978. He will be missed by his family and friends, and I also will miss him, too. Brother Bertrand and I worked together at the refinery for 25 years. After all these years working together, you get closely attached to each other.

I also was working there the night of the explosion and fire, but I was much luckier than Brother Bertrand, for I got out safely.

Thanks to God. May Brother Bertrand rest in peace.

The Czech Heritage Singers will be singing and playing on Aug. 4th at the Aqua Fest in Austin.

Fraternally, Alvin J. Sefcik President - SPJST — PEAL REUNION HELD IN CORPUS CHRISTI The Peal reunion was held July 1st and July 2nd, 1978 at 5 p.m. in the large air-conditioned Peal Repair Shop.

My daughter, Ann, arrived and took me along to the reunion.

When we arrived we found my son-in-law, Roy Peal, Frank Sijansky. and many other helpers busy at the fish-fry kettle. Relatives from other cities had also arrived. It was a pleasant opportunity to meet so many friendly people.

The next day (Sunday) Ann arrived at 11 a.m. to take me along again to the reunion. The men were busy at the two pits barbecuing beef and chicken, and the ladies were busy at the kitchen tables. Many thanks for the invitation.

The parking lot at the new building location in Corpus Christi is paved. The frontage now is matching the wide asphalt on Kostoryz Street. It looks nice.

As you have been reading, our three-day celebration will take place on Friday, Aug. 4th, Saturday, Aug. 5th, and Sunday, Aug. 6th.

Our Friday activities call for a kick-off dance and fish fry. The fish fry will take place from 5 to 8 p.m., and the dance from 8 to 12 p.m., with music by the Nashville Persuasion of Corpus Christi.

The Saturday schedule calls for a barbecue plate to be served from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with continuous indoor and outdoor activities during the afternoon. A celebration dance is scheduled from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., with music by the Leo Majek Orchestra of Corpus Christi.

Sunday is our big day because that is the day that we formally open and dedicate the new building that we are all so proud of. The day's activities will get under way with a meal being served at 11 a.m.

This will be a sausage plate with all the trimmings and will be sold at nominal cost. The meal will be served until time to clear the hall at 1:45. At 2 p.m. we will have the outdoor flag-raising and pledge of allegiance by members of the American Legion Post No. 364, assisted by Brothers Mack Munson and Tim Eisner. Shortly after that ribbon to the main entrance '3 tut and the crowd will come indoors for the rest of the dedication program. Speakers will include Bro. Michael Lehinan of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in

9 Corpus Christi, giving the invocation; President Nick A. Morris of the Supreme Lodge, Lodge No. '79 President Brother Frank C. Sacky; District VII Director Brother Bob Bayer; Corpus Christi Mayor Gabe Lozano; and Brother George Prevratil, president of the Southern District of the American Sokol Organization.

Brother Mack Munson will serve as presiding officer for the entire dedication ceremonies.

There will be various musical entertainment and other activities during the afternoon, the details of which will be forthcoming. Also, there will be an appreciation dance from 6 to 10 p.m., with music by Bob and Vel Goldstein. Admission to the dance will be $3 per person.

TONY MOTL VALEDICTORIAN AT CALHOUN HIGH SCHOOL Anthony (Tony) Motl of Point Comfort was named valedictorian during the baccalaureate - commencement ceremonies May 30th, 1978, at Calhoun High School Sandcrab Stadium in Port Lavaca.

During his high school years he received academic awards in English, math, science, chemistry, Spanish, bookkeeping, and had the highest academic average for three years.

He was awarded the Alcoa Foundation Scholarship, the Bausch and Lomb Science Award, Rotary Club Outstanding Physics Student Award.

Tony participated in UIL Number Sense for two years, going to the regional competition his senior year.

Three $4,000 Alcoa scholarships were given out to recipients selected from among six finalists by a committee of area educators. The three scholarship winners will receive $1,000 per year over a fouryear period. Each scholarship carries with it an unrestricted grant of $1,200 for the college or university attended by the recipient.

The winners were chosen from an impressive field of 43 sons and daughters of Point Comfort Alcoans who initially took the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) last Year.

Scholarship winners were selected on the basis of SAT scores, their

high school academic performance and personal qualities such as character and leadership ability.

In his valedictorian address, Motl noted three necessary goals, these being the preservation of freedom, a concerned interest in the moral standards of today and an interest in the continuance of education.

He stressed that "graduation is not an end to education but a stepping stone to more learning — in college or on the Job." He was a three-year member of the golf team and during his junior year was recipient of the first Gold Tide Award for athletic devotion. He was captain of the team his senior year. He received the Calhoun County Booster Club Outstanding Golfer Award.

He received the U. S. Army and Keystone Broadcasting System American Scholar-Athlete Award for outstanding scholarship ability and athletic participation. (This was also a first time individual award offered for Calhoun High).

He was: —elected by classmates as Most Likely to Succeed and An Outstanding Student by the faculty members.

—served as an officer of the Point Comfort Little League Assn. for the past two years.

He plans to attend Texas A&M University this fall and was the recipient of the TAMU Opportunity Awards Scholarship.

Tony's parents are Julia and Olga Motl and he has a sister, Pamela; they are all members of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

His maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Emil J Reznicek of Temple and his paternal grandparents are the late Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Motl of Temple. * * Guest speaker at the graduation was Dr. W. C. Newberry, an instructor at Southwest Texas State University where he teaches research methods and educational philosophy, Dr. Newberry, gave four reasons for his being there as well as urging the graduates to participate in life.

The first reason is an act of egotism, according to Dr. Newberry.

Standing up here and giving a speech and expecting everyone to be interested in what he has to say, is an act of egotism. Right?

"Secondly, graduation is a ritual.

They had to bring somebody like me here. You couldn't graduate if I wasn't here. You're lucky I'm here, 'cause I'm gonna' do it for you," continued Newberry.

Newberry added that the third reason for the ceremony was that it was the final blow — "they couldn't just let you graduate."

The fourth reason is the final effort, according to Newberry. "You have now been in school for 12 years or 13 or 14 or 15. We might even have a CHS record holder here. And everything that all your teachers and parents left out in those years, I am supposed to do now, and I'm gonna' try to do this," commented Dr. Newberry.

Getting to the serious nature, he urged everyone to participate in life. "So many people are sitting there letting life pass by, young and bid. Television is one example.

They watch other people live out their lives before them. I'm convinced that when their time comes, their life will not flash before their eyes, because they haven't lived.

Instead, it will be Starsky and Hutch, or As The World Turns, or The Match Game."

Dr. Newberry concluded his address by quoting that it is far more tragic to have talent and not use it than to have no talent at all.

Eileen Vanek was graduated Magna Cum Laude from The University of Texas at San Antonio May 14th, 1978, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology. She is a member of Lodge 133, San Antonio. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Edwin J. Vanek, 623 Larkwood Drive. San Antonio. She has one sister, Sandra, who also is a member of Lodge 133, San Antonio.

Eileen was one of 19 students out of the total graduating class of 500 students who graduated Magna Cum Laude from the university.

During college, she was a member of the National Scholastic Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa, at San Antonio College, and was chairman and an active participant on various projects. She was one of seven honor students of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society club chosen to represent San Antonio College in, 1974, which has a student body

EILEEN of 20,000, and she was recognized and presented to the Mayor of San Antonio.

She is the niece of Mr. Frankie Vanek, who is a trustee of Lodge No. 50, El Campo, and past president of the lodge there. His wife, Rita Vanek, is the present president of Lodge 50. Eileen is also the niece of Mr. Matt Vanek of Victoria, who is the director of Dist. VI, SPJST. - SPJST TEXAS FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL Under the shelter of a spreading tree, an octegenarian East Texan, a Middle Eastern oud player, a fiddle-playing English professor and a lye soap maker swap stories over a cold drink.

A sunny hillside provides the seating for stages featuring ethnic folk dancers. Visitors watch, and can join performers like the Filipino "tinikling" (bamboo dance) dancers, Ukrainian cossacks or Spanish flamencos.

Visitors laze under the Brush Arbor eating Greek souflaki, Irish stew or Scandinavian Varm Kory (hot dog) and sing "Serving Jesus With a Smile " with a black gospel group. Others learn the unfamiliar sounds and syllables of a Dutch folk song.

Untested hands try such pioneer skills as horsehair rope spinning, log splitting, basket weaving or sheep shearing. A chicken who just might break the next world's record in long-distance flying is cheered along, and the delicacies of possum are described by the Professor of Possum.olgy.

The medley of activities is the annual Texas Folklife Festival. The symphony created out of the diversity of Texas' people, occupations, skills and fun will be presented Aug. 3-6 on the grounds of The Institute of Texas Cultures in downtown San Antonio.

Texas was settled by more than 30 cultural and ethnic groups who came here seeking opportunity and freedom. Although their lifestyles were altered by the frontier experience, many shared traditions and customs, creating a common bond in all Texas. The pioneer skills celebrated at the Festival reflect this — Germans, Czechs, and Japanese contributed to farming methods; Mexicans and Spaniards shared their knowledge with the first Anglo cowboy.

The seventh annual Festival, like those that precede it, is a revival and celebration of customs_ some passed down through generations, some only a tale read in a book. It adds up to educational entertainment where each Texan is brought closer to his heritage, and nonTexans discover aspects of the state that differ greatly from popular stereotypes.

The Festival is sponsored by The Institute of Texas Cultures, a learning and communications center that actively and dramatically presents the history and folk culture of the state. The Festival was the forerunner of the Institute's living history program. It originated in 1968 when the Smithsonian Institution invited Institute staff members to help stage a tribute to the Lone Star State at the Festival of American Folklife. The Texans returned ready to do it again for the folks back home.

Since 1972, the Festival has presented its four-day, non-stop, celebration of this culture.

Some 5000 people come to San Antonio from more then 130 towns and cities around the state to help the Institute describe Texas' heritage. Italians from Montague County 'bring their bocce balls to teach an old-world lawn game to others. The Cajun's rowdy, foottapping music set crowds to dancing the "fais-do-do" as though they have known the steps all their lives. Old John Henry's tribulations are better understood by those hardy enough to lift a sledge hammer and bring it down on a rail-

Goose pluckers, Polish paper cutters, Russian egg dyers, Wendish noodle makers, German chair caners, weavers, and outdoor kitchen builders work to the tunes of bluegrass . Swiss yodelers, German oompah, jazz bands, blues and Polish folk singers.

Non-stop entertainment competes for attention on seven stages.

Constant craft demonstrations are scattered across the 14.5 acre grounds. Visitors stroll among the music, food, games, contests, storytellers and builders.

Admission prices are $3 for adults and $1 for children under 13. Group tickets may also be bought. A pass for four people — or a four-day pass for one person—may be pur chased in advance for $10, adults. and $3 for children under 13. A hand stamp allows visitors to enter and leave the Festival grounds as often as they wish during the day.

The Festival is open 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3rd, and from noon until 11 p.m. the 4th, 5th and 6th.

SPJST — TEXAS CZECHS' SYMPOSIUM SET FOR OCTOBER To Everyone Interested in the Subject of Czech Culture in Texas: Texas A&M University has recently received a grant from the Texas Committee for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities for the purpose of holding a symposium entitled "The Czechs in Texas."

After much planning and several unavoidable delays, we are happy to announce that the symposium will take place in Temple, Oct. 27-29, 1978. An exact description of the location of the program will be printed in a brochure that will be available late this summer. But for now, we ask everyone interested in Czech culture to help in the following ways: 1. Spread the news! We want the largest possible audience for this event. Keep in mind that even the most academic presentations will be addressed to the general audience.

2. Help us locate informed and talented individuals and groups

who would like to participate by a. presenting papers on subjects such as Czech-Texas history, religion, social structure, folklore, language, literature, economic contributions, music, farming practices, and so on; b. discussing issues involving the Czech language, cultural assimilation, and genealogies in "panel discussion" formats; c. performing authentic Czech folk music and dance; d. preparing exhibits of Czech cooking, handicrafts, etc.

In order to plan the program, we must hear from you by July 20, 1978.

We welcome the participation of all interested individuals and groups, regardless of affiliation or point of view. Many issues to be discussed will be controversial and will surely call for a variety of responses. For example, should "Czech ethnic identity" be preserved and, if so, how can it be preserved? Are the Czech language and culture in Texas in a state of decline? If so, what, if any thing, should be done about it?

We hope that this symposium will encourage a lively discussion of many aspects of the Czech ethnic community in Texas, and that a new awareness and understanding of the issues will arise from it.

Counselors DISTRICT II ACHIEVEMENT DAY RESULTS The YAD of District II was well attended by both youth and adults. The youth were full of enthusiasm and they were well represented from the whole district.

There were 50 youth who participated in the talent and royalty contest and there were 160 craft entries in the arts and craft contest. We had three kings and seven queens competing in the Royalty Contest.

On the district level, all active youth clubs, including: Academy, Seaton, Taylor, Cyclone, Rockdale, Lovelady, Granger, Elgin, and Beyersville were very well represented. We certainly missed Lodge 15, Buckholts; Lodge 80, Holland; Lodge 155, Austin; and our newest lodge, Lodge 187, Round Rock, and we hope they will enter our contests next year.

I would like to thank the youth leaders and assistants, the District officers, District II Director Henry Vitek, SYD Dorothy Massey, and many other sisters and brothers who were so very efficient in helping to make our YAD such a great success. It was through your help that this day was a successful one, and we certainly do thank everyone. I would especially wish to thank the eight people who did all the tabulating. Mr. Henry Vitek supervised this committee.

Others on the committee were Mrs. Mary Dubec, Howard Stefka, Ronnie Reiger, Vera Gorubec, Mike Kaiser, Ray Woytek, Dan Bohac, and Lad Zatopek. The local lodge youth leaders and assistants all did their part and certainly did it well. Thank you again, one and all!

DISTRICT III YOUTH CAMP July 25-28, At Camp Val Verde Once more the time for summer camp has rolled around for the youth of District III and will be held at, Camp Val Verde from July 25th to July 28th. If anyone has overlooked mailing in their camp application, please do so at once.

Wednesday, July 19, 1978 Arrival time is set for 10 a.m., with registration and assignment of cabins before lunch. Lunch will be served between 12 and 1 p.m.; with planned activities beginning 'Monday afternoon with a getacquainted party scheduled for the evening. Our regular camp schedule will close with the noon meal, Friday, July 28th.

We will have flag ceremonies twice daily and there should be a patriotic song or a poem in addition to the pledge. Each club should be prepared to participate in one or two of these ceremonies.

We need adults, men and women, to volunteer their services for leaders and/or chaperones for adequate supervision of our young people. To insure your safety and the safety of others, we must insist on practical and suitable clothing. Comfortable clothing that gives good coverage for such activities as hiking and horseback riding should be brought. MUST items are: shoes or boots, socks, and hats. Without proper clothing participation will not be permitted. DO NOT bring any valuables! The following should serve as a check list of items you need to bring to camp with you: Hat, socks, and two pairs of shoes Underclothing (a change for each day) Swim suit, coverup, and towel Bed sheet, cover sheet, and pillow Wash cloths, soap, and additional towels Toiletry items, sun cream, and insect repellent Rain wear (?)

Let us keep the enthusiasm that we had at camp and the promise that we had to one another about making District V YAD the very best we have ever had.

To the youth who did not atLend camp and to the parents of all District V Youth, we are asking that you join us in our endeavor to make this the greatest YAD possible.

Participation is of great importance on this day with your crafts, talent, Beseda and royalty entries. However the attendance and support of your parents, friends and relatives is also of the greatest importance to help in making this day a success.

YAD will be July 30, 1978, at Lodge No. 88, 1435 Beall St., in Houston. Dinner will be served, starting at 11:30 a.m. Registration of crafts, talent, Beseda and royalty will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra and Choral Group will perform from 12 until 2 p.m. featuring special music prepared for this day.

YAD program will begin at 2:30 n.m. with a free dance to follow immediately after the crowning of our new District V royalty and announcement of YAD winners.

DISTRICT VII YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT DAY JULY 23, 1978 Hosting our Youth Achievement Day this year will 'be Lodge No. 107, Floresville. Ice tea and snacks from the bar will be available.

Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the program getting under way at 2 p.m.

Program Individual Talent: 6-9, 10-12, 13-14, 15-17 Group Talent: Junior 6-12; Senior 13-14 Break Royalty speeches Awards: points, talent and craft Break Royalty awards District VII Camp July 31 — Aug. 4th

Camp will be held at Camp Idlewild, 2 miles from Comfort on Highway 473.

Lunch will be served at camp on the first day. Try to arrive shortly before noon or right after. We will spend Monday afternoon getting settled in our cabins and groups with a relaxed schedule.

Our camp leaders held a meeting in New Braunfels during the district outing. We have a great group of enthusiastic workers, so be prepared for a well-organized fun camp.

Following is a list of things you will need to 'bring to camp. A change of casual clothes for each day, shoes, socks, and long pants for horseback riding, swim suit, and towel for the pool, personal articles such as toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, deodorant, wash cloth, towels, suntan lotion (if you need it); sheets for the bunk beds, light blanket and pillow.

For craft bring a good washed pillowcase for the autograph party.

Article of clothes for craft painting (shirt, jeans or whatever).

For breaktime each camper should bring two dozen cookies.

Optional: tennis racquet, ball glove, flashlight.

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY Dear Readers, We held a great meeting recently because all the youth members were still excited over winning so many places at the District II YAD. The reason we were very pleased is because this is the first time our lodge won first in talent and to have a king, so you see why we are excited.

Vice President Johnny Hicks presided at the meeting because our president had some chores at home that caused him to be late for the meeting.

All officers were present, except our reporter.

Since there was no letter written last month, the youth club members decided to elect another reporter. The new reporter is Brady

Hutka. I know Brady will do the youth club a good job.

Remember, those of you who are going to camp, camp is July 29th through Aug. 1st, for teens.

Be sure and bring personal items, comfortable clothing and shoes, socks and long jeans for horseback riding (this is the rule of the camp for horseback riding), swimsuits (no cut-offs with frinze).

The juniors will go to camp on Aug. 1st and stay through Aug. 4th. The same things apply for the juniors, concerning what to bring to camp for those days. Also, you must have your own change' for soft drinks Don't forget to bring a hat or cap. You may 'buy SPJST T-shirts or caps from SYD Dorothy Massey, or the camp has items you may buy. Remember, these items will be purchased with your own money.

YAD was a great success and as I stated before, we are very excited. All the talent, craft, king, and queen entries were very good.

I am like Frank Klinkovsky, when he said, I would have hated to have been a judge.

It was voted to have a swimming party July 21st and the youth club will pay for the swimming.

Remember, practice will begin for State YAD July 26th, at 7 p.m., so be there and get busy.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 35, ELK Dear Readers, The July 9th meeting of Lodge 35 Elk Youth Club was called to order by President Julie Hand, who also led us in the pledge.

Filling in for Charlotte Banik was Vice President Lana Steinke, who read the June minutes, which were approved as read.

Sondra Dieterich gave the treasurer's report.

Under old business we discussed YAD and our winners. Congratulations to Eddie Banik for being crowned king of District III, and to Richard Burney, the District III duke; also congratulations to Charlotte and Eddie Ba.nik for being the winners in senior group talent, and to Dawn Pavelka and Honey Brown for winning the junior group talent.

Ronald Steinke made a motion we have a swimming party at the West pool July 14th. The motion was seconded by Vice President Lana Steinke. The youth club was to furnish the cold cuts and cold drinks.

Under new business Donald Steinke made a motion to have a cake walk on the second Saturday in August — the 12th. Eddie Banik seconded the motion. Youth Leader Rosemarie Banik asked if every child would bring a cake to the cake walk.

Julie Hand won the door prize and she will 'bring the August birthday cake.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Talton SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting July 2nd, at the Talton Community Center.

The pledge was led by Yvonne Krpee and the prayer was led by Shellie Krpec.

The old business was about camp.

It was enjoyed by everyone. Then we were reminded to pay our dues and sell and turn in our wedding cards money.

New 'business was about District VI YAD, which was held July 16th. We were told to read the Vestnik for the time. Practices were also held. July 16th we were to sell food at the battle dance.

Further discussion was about our summer outing which will be held Aug. 6th at the American Legion.

We will have our meeting at that time. The members will pay for their swimming and the lodge will pay for our supper.

Then we played games and made crafts.

We drew for door prizes and the winners were Keith Kresta, Brian Bubela, Chris Krpec, Marcy Dorotik, Marjorie Treumer and Monica Krpee.

The meeting adjourned and we were then served refreshments.

We had chili dogs to eat in the evening and eggs, bacon, toast and milk for breakfast in the morning.

Fraternally, (7-12-78) Debra Dobesh - SPJST — DISTRICT V YOUTH CLUB Dear Members, District V youth camp was held June 14th through 17th. We left June 14th on a bus to Bastrop. We stayed, at the Circle D lodge. It was really neat. We did crafts, played softball and volleyball, swam, had discussions and parties.

All the youngsters had a blast. The cooks were terrific because all our meals were delicious.

Thanks to Mrs. Massey, Mr. Wahlberg, and to all the other people who helped. This year was really great!

Everyone is invited to our District V YAD July 30th which will be held at Lodge 88 in Houston.

We all hope to have lots and lots of entries in the District V YAD this year.

Fraternally, Debra Dobesh (7-12-78) District V Jr. Reporter - SPJST LODGE NO. 18, ELGIN Dear Members, I would like to thank the Youth Club of Lodge No. 177 for hosting us at Little River at the car races, and also hosting the 1978 YAD. We had 16 youth, and nine adults to go from our lodge. Out of those 16 youth, 12 had entries.

In the 6-9 category was Dawn Peterson, who placed second in her talent by playing the piano; also she placed third with her latchwork rug. Shawn Young placed first with his pictorial arts. Staci Young did a baton routine, but did not place.

In the 10-12 category was Amy Doss, who played the piano. Beth Felfe placed 1st with her baton routine. Amy Mogonye placed second with her home arts entry; she also played the piano.

Beth Felfe and Staci Young did a group talent in the junior division and placed first. Carolyn Ging and Paula Peterson also did a group talent number in the senior division and placed third.

Our youth club placed second in the most points standings. Junior point winners from our lodge were: 1st, Shawn Young; 2nd place, Dawn Peterson; 3rd place, Staci Young. Teenager point winners were 1st place Paula Peter-

son; 2nd place, Jay McCullough; 3rd place, Carolyn Ging.

Our youth club also entered a scrapbook, but it didn't place.

Fraternally, Lanette Hykel (7-13-78) - SPJST — LODGE NO. 35, ELK Dear Members and Readers, The youth of Lodge No. 35, Elk, held their regular meeting with over 20 members present. Discussions ranged from District YAD to future swimming parties.

When the chartered bus left from Elk it was filled to capacity with eager youth and parents looking forward to an eventful day in Dallas, at the District III YAD. The return trip proved to be a joyous one because Elk took home numerous top honors, including the District III King.

Following in the footsteps of his three sisters, Eddie Banik captured the title of king, with his duke, Richard Burney, stepping up to the District III Duke, position.

Our queen candidate, Jodie Wilson, and her duchess, Missy Steinke, did a fine job and deserve our respect for the very fine effort they expended in representing us. It takes a lot of courage to enter the royalty contest.

In the talent aspect of YAD, Elk again had many winners. Both group talent age groups contained youth from Elk. Our junior group consisted of Honey Brown and Dawn Pavelka; they sang and danced to "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head," and they won first place. Our senior group talent also captured first place. Charlotte and Eddie Banik performed a duet entitled "Me and My Shadow." Our other first place talent winner was Charlotte Banik in the 15-17 age group with her vocal rendition of

Elk also had two second-place winners, with Honey Brown (6-9) and Darrin Banik (10-12), both putting in a good showing.

Elk had many craft winners with various places, but Richard Burney was the only craft entrant to advance to state, with his boomerang. This is a fine showing for his first year of YAD competition.

The birthday cake was won by Linda Mikush.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother,

JOE DUDZIENSKI, who passed away at 12:09 a.m.

Friday, June 30, 1978, in a local hospital, after a short illness.

Brother Dudzienski was born Feb. 23rd, 190'7, in the state of Illinois, and in 1929 he married Miss Frances Vesely in Chicago; in 1932 they moved to Dallas with their two children. From Dallas they moved to Corpus Christi and he joined the membership of snstr Lodge No. 56 on Dec. 21, 1938 and he also joined the local Sokol unit. Since then he made several moves but the last move was to Corpus Christi from Mercedes, in 1974.

Brother Dudzienski was also charter member of Elks Lodge No. 2057 in Weslaco and Moose Lodge No. 734 Corpus Christi. He was a retired grocer and farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Sister Frances (Vesely) Dudzienski of Corpus Christi; one son, Joseph Frank Dudzienski of Pearsall; one daughter, Mrs. Karl Meadows of Corpus Christi; one brother, Frank W. Dudzienski of Corpus Christi; one sister, Lillian Hoffman of Corpus Christi; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 3, 1978, at the Clifford Jackson Chapel,.with Rev. The nouns that have been listed in the vocabulary have been in the nominative case. The nominative is the case of the subject of the sentence or of the predicate nomin ative (after the verb "to be").
