JOE B. BRINY Vice President Supreme Lodge, SPJST

Brother Hejny was elected Vice President of the Supreme Lodge in the XVIIth Convention in Temple in 1956; re-elected in subsequent conventions and served until his death. He had previously served as State Organizer, Northern District, from July 1955 until he became active Vice President on January 1, 1957. He joined Lodge No. 135 in Ennis on 25 November 1933, transferring to Lodge No. 47 Seaton on September 1, 1963.

In behalf of the entire membership, we extend our sincere and heartfelt sympathies to Brother Hejny's family. The SPJST and Fraternalism were his primary concern during much of his adult life. He contributed much to the growth and progress of the SPJST as Head of the Insurance Department He will be missed and remembered by his many friends who mourn his passing. 速 Supreme Lodge, SPJST

11 Across the II Editor's Desk Fate has a way of changing the course of our lives and the thoughts almost continuously it seems. After trying to reach Sister Joe B. (Stasie) Hejny at home a number of times by telephone in the last few weeks, your editor decided to go see Brother Hejny Sunday, May 21st in the hospital, however, company arrived and the next best choice was taken and a telephone call to Sister Norma Andel was made to her home. She advised us that Sister Hejny was staying at the bedside of Brother Hejny continually at his request and that was why she could not be reached at home and that Brother Hejny seemed to be feeling better and was in good spirits. Feeling relieved, we thanked her for her kind information and for allowing us to bother her on a Sunday.

Tuesday evening, May 23rd, about 7 p.m., we finished reading "The Right and The Power" by Mr. Leon Jaworski for the second time. It is his account of his findings about the Watergate affair and thoughts crossed our, mind about how, by the manipulations of his office and falsehoods, a president brought down his own presidency and forced, his own resignation. Then we picked up a rather humorous book, read a while, and then our mind was made up! Yes, this week we would write an editorial in a light vein so that our readers could laugh a little as they read; with that in mind we went home and went to bed thinking about some of the humor we find in our own lives. In the morning, on awakening, our thoughts returned to what we fell asleep with — humor and funny things.

Alas, it was not to be. About 6:30 .a.m. the telephone rang and it was Brother Bill Hejny, Brother Joe B. Hejny's son. In the No. 2 spot was Sister Della Kadlecek of Lodge 88, with 19 applications for $68,500 in sales, and in the No. 3 spot was Brother Louis Hanus (88), 6 applications for $63,000 of insurance.

We had a wonderful month.

The two classes held April 24th and 25th were both well attended and everyone learned something new. We didn't have enough time to cover more, but we hope the next class will be an all-day class to allow more time.

April 30th was our District V sales representatives' banquet at Lodge 172 in Pasadena; it was well attended and everyone had a good time. There were some special people who helped me and I want to thank them for helping: Sister Birdie Hilsher for the lovely decorations she arranged for the center table and other tables. The theme was: The Yellow Roses of Texas. On the center of the tables were arrangements of the State of Texas filled in with roses and blue ribbons across the tables and yellow candles with a lit chimney lamp. Thank you, again, because this was admired by everyone and everyone cannot create such beautiful arrangements. Others who helped in the kitchen were Sister Klechka with her assistant, Sister Orsak; my two sons, Gene and 0. J. Mikeska, and my daughters-in-law, Kathryn and Sharon Mikeska, who were also a big help to me because this always requires a lot of work and planning to make sure you don't forget something at home. I also want to thank Brother Edward Miculka who helped with the refreshments and to Brother Victor Peter who helped to oversee that everything was in order.

Brother Peter is the president of Lodge 172.

A few people got lost because the Highway Dept. had taken the signs off the Gulf Freeway to Pasadena and I was sorry they didn't make it or they were late.

I'm sorry I will not have any pictures of our banquet. I went to pick up the pictures and they informed me that the pictures did not turn out, and this made me very unhappy, they had ruined the roll of film. Next time I will have to take at least two cameras.

The Texas Fraternal Congress contest is on, between May 1st and July 31st, 1978; please have your applications postmarked not later that July 31st, 1978, so let's all try and see what you can really accomplish. You can surprise yourself! If anyone has any qtiestions, please give me a call to be sure you understand the contest in the letter that you received; the letter was well explained.

To you new sales representatives, or anyone else who didn't make the last class, as soon as I set the date for an all-day class I would like for you to mark the date and make plans to attend.

I want to thank each of you who have made sales for your good work, but let's not slack up because we now have a contest in progress. This is a three-month sales contest lasting from May 1, 1978, thru July 31, 1978. The winners will be one sales representative from each district who writes insurance with a total of the highest annualized premiums during the contest. Minimum annualized premium must amount to at least $300 to qualify. The award will be an expense paid trip to the Texas Fraternal Congress with 15 cents a mile for travel, lodging at actual cost, meals up to $10 a day, and registration fee for one person.

Plus $25 if spouse attends. If the winner is unable to go to the TFC an award of $175 will be substituted for first place winner and an award of $150 to the first four runners-up. A watch to the 5th, 6th, and 7th runners-up in the state, or a monetary gift of $50.

I attended a lodge meeting at Karnes City Lodge 93 and I enjoyed the meeting very much because our brothers and sisters of that lodge were really nice to us.

Brother Bob Bayer, District VII director, was also there. We enjoyed a nice visit in the home of Brother Louis and Sister Dottie Pustejovs ky.

I also attended the District VII spring meeting in Corpus Christi, May 7th, at Lodge 79 and gave my district report; there were eight lodges out of 12 represented, that's better than in the past.

I'm so happy to state that Lodge 79 Corpus Christi has a new lodge building not quite finished yet; but it's big and beautiful, and a credit to our district.

I enjoyed seeing all of you at our banquet May 21st.

Presently she is in Room 113 and she would enjoy receiving cards from her friends, and acquaintances. —JW * * Mrs. Julia Sembera, 79, of Flatonia died Thursday, May 18th.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20th, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Flatonia, with Sister Tillie Helmcamp, 1st vice president of Lodge 88, officiating.

Interment followed at the Flatonia City Cemetery. Sister Sembera was the mother of Brother Frankie Sembera of Lodge 88.

LODGE NO. 87, TEMPLE Dear Members: SPJST Lodge 87, in Temple, honored three of our 50-year members Friday evening, May 12th, at 7:30 p.m.

SL President Nick A. Morris, Sister Dorothy Morris and son Michael were special guests.

Following a covered dish supper, President Nick Morris presented the 50-year pins to Sister Bettie Kacir, Sister Josephine Shine and Brother Louis Hejl.

Assisting President Morris in presenting the pins were Sidney Kacir, son of Sister Betty Kacir, Mr. Shine and Mrs. Louis Hejl. President Morris congratulated the honored members and offered his best wishes always.

Mrs. Dorothy Chervenka introduced the honored members; President Louis Marek introduced honored guests, Nick Morris and family; and Jerry Valchar president of RVOS, who introduced his guests, James J. Surman and Ernest Pesek.

LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Members: The Beyersville SPJST Lodge No. 48 held their regular monthly meeting May 8th, at 6 p.m.

Our meeting was called to order by President Bobby Wuensche.

Sharon Beran read the minutes and gave her financial report; both of these were approved as read.

Ruth Wuensche gave the insurance report on premiums and dues collected.

There was no old business so we went into new business.

The first order of new business was the upcoming May Fete held May 14th. It was decided to start the coronation ceremonies at 5 p.m. Immediately following the coronation, a catered supper was to be served. The Grand March was to start at 7 p.m. with the Debonaires of Country Music providing the Music. For the coronation outside Johnny Price and the Southern Breeze were to provide the entertainment.

LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Mem,bers: The May meeting wat held Sunday, May 21st, at 2 p.m., with President Henry West presiding.

The pledge of allegiance and lodge motto were recited by the members.

Roll call of officers revealed all were present with the exception of the recording secretary, Sister Bonnie Pruitt.

The minutes of the April meeting were read by Sister Sue Pauling who sat in for Sister Bonnie Pruitt. They were approved as read.

President West had everyone stand in silent tribute for Brother Anton Mazanec who passed away Sunday, April 30th.

In correspondence a thank-you note was read from Brother Silas Smith, state field manager, who was recently in King's Daughters Hospital. We are all glad to hear that Brother Silas is doing fine.

A letter was read from the Elm Mott Volunteer Fire Department.

It was voted that we send them a donation of $100 and also let them use Linden Hall if they wished to have some projects to raise funds.

Sister Darlene Engelke read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held Monday night, May 8th.

Sister Libbie Parma gave the youth club report. Sister Parma congratulated the graduates from Lodge 66. They are Margaret Rose Gaidusek, daughter of Brother and Sister Johnnie Gaidusek from Reicher High; Margaret Pavlicek, daughter of Brother and Sister James Pavlicek from West High; Paula Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Scott from University High, Waco. Paula is also the valedictorian and has received a medal from the DAR for having the highest grade. (Paula is the granddaughter of Brother and Sister Emil Hanus and will enter Texas

Wednesday, May 31, 1978 A&M in the fall ); and Elizabeth (Beth) Hanus, daughter of Brother and Sister Daniel Hanus, from University High, Waco. Beth also received a $600 scholarship in science. Beth is the granddaughter of Brother and Sister Otto Hanus.

Congratulations to each of you I am sure there are others from Lodge 66, but these were the ones Sister Parma knew abbut at this time; if there are others graduating, we certainly wish to congratulate you, also.

Sister Parma, said the youth had planned a program for Mother's Day. They also made crazy hats for a contest and mothers would be selected later to model the hats.

Sister Sue Pauling gave the entertainment committee report. Today, after the meeting, they would have ice cream cones for everyone.

Sister Pauling thanked Brother Otto Hanus for putting up and changing the signs for her at Linden Hall.

For the June meeting a noon meal is planned for the Mother's and Father's Day which will be served at 12:30 p.m., with the lodge meeting following. There will be more details on this later, so watch the Vestnik.

New members accepted in May are George W. Shilling, Penelope Ann Swanner, Sheila Nell Storm, Dolores Ann Rejcek, Deborah Rejcek, Christine Agnes Rejcek, Trent Towery, Angela K. Health Committee Report: Sister Agnes Mazanec was not present but it was reported that Sister Anita Mazanec was in Providence Hospital for surgery. We hope she is doing OK and will be home soon.

We also heard that Brother Joe B. Hejny, SL Vice President, was in a Temple hospital.

Sister Dorothy Gerlich of the Resolution Committee read the resolution for Brother Anton Mazanec, a longtime member of Lodge 66, who passed away Sunday, April 30th, at the age of 79 years. Brother Anton was an active member of Lodge 66 for many years. To his family we all express our sympathy and may he rest in eternal peace.

GIFT PRESENTATION — The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor received a

16min sound movie projector recently, in memory of Bozena Valcik of Dallas. Accepting the projector are, L to R: Mary Garner, bookkeeper and Frances Schwenker, administrator of the reat, home. The projector was presented by Mr. and Mrs. Arnold M. Vrla and Mrs. Joe E. Vrla, all of Dallas, on behalf of the membership and youth club of Dallas SPJST Lodge Jaro No. 130. Mrs. Valcik began the Moucka Fund which was a starting point for raising money to build the rest home in Taylor.

Sister Bozena Valcik was a charter member of SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas. During her life time she worked with the youth of the lodge teaching them the Czech language.

She also worked with the Dramatic Club of Sokol and Lodge 130, being their prompter for many years. Not only did she work with the youth she was also in charge of the ,kitchen on numerous occasions

and was famous for her goulash and koblihy.

Sister Valcik was a devoted member of Lodge 130 and Sokol Zizka. Through her efforts the Moucka Fund was begun, which was the beginning of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor. (Picture and articles courtesy The Taylor Daily Press.)

A drawing was held for Mother of the Year. Sister Bernice Pankonien was named Mother of the Year and she was presented a gift. Also selected was the oldest mother with the most children: Sister Rose Parma. The youngest mother with the most children selected was Sister Evelyn Cepak. They each received a lovely corsage.

The mothers' names drawn to model the hats were Mary Ann Nors, Helon Shelton, Angelina West, Ruby Orsag, Anna Vernetti, Mabel Crow, Maurine Trefny, Yvonne Nors, Sophie Leshikar, Matilda Halms, and Annie Hanus.

The youth really did some artistic work on those hats.

Tina ITrbanek who will be a candidate for queen at District III YAD, then presented her speech and it was a very good speech, Tina. We wish you the best of luck.

Members celebrating birthdays in May were Sisters Sophie Leshik ar, Cindy Kofnovec, Barbara Stanislav, Vikki Nors and Barbara Brem, and Brothers Emil Hanus, and Leslie Dungan. I wish to thank the entertainment committee for the delicious ice cream, following the meeting.

It was delicious and refreshing. To those of you who did not eat it, it was your loss of a cool refreshing treat.

V 8 TN IK LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE

The first night meeting in the history of Lodge No. 107 was held Wednesday evening, May 10th, at 8 p.m.

Preceding the meeting a barb& cued chicken dinner was served to the members present. Everyone present, and we had a very nice attendance, agreed that the night meetings for the summer months were ideal, so a vote was taken on a motion by Billy Pavliska, seconded by John Burleson, that our summer meetings be scheduled for June 14th, July 12th, and August 9th. These meetings are on the second Wednesday of the month and a meal of some sort will be served at each meeting. Our June meeting will be preceded by a covered dish supper. The time is set for 8 p.m., but the doors are opened earlier, so if you are not busy and want to visit for a while, come in early.

President Bayer convened the meeting and Roxanne Bayer led the members in the pledge.

Officers' roll call was answered by all the officers.

Minutes were read and approved.

Treasurer Sralla and Financial Secretary Hrna each gave their reports.

President Bayer gave a detailed dance. A nice profit was realized report on the barbecue dinner and from the function and the officers want to thank everyone for their generous donations.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer reported on the activities of the youth club. She stated a nice group attended the District VII meeting at Corpus Christi. Also, some flowers had been made to distribute at the hospital.

A report of the District VII meeting was given including the slate of officers elected for the coming year. I won't list them all because they will be listed in other reports, but I do want to congratulate Anton Svoboda of Lodge 107 who was elected second vice president.

District VII will continue to have two district meetings a year. Lodge 185, New Braunfels, will host the fall meeting. More details later.

Rex Purchis invited the members to a graduation party for their children, Teresa and Mark Purchis, who are graduating from Floresville High School, May 26th.

John Burleson invited everyone to the VFW picnic at Poth„which was held May 28th.

Rex Purchis gave a report on the Peanut Festival meeting he attended. The festival is set for Oct. 13th and 14th, this year. Plans are already in progress and preparations are being made.

Thanks go to Henry Walla and Anton Svoboda for donating the of piping water to the barbecue shed. The but was given a tryout materials and also doing the labor at our recent dinner and with a few alterations it should be quite adequate in the future.

The Memorial Fund now stands at $283.77. President Bayer also stated the State Department of Health had checked the premises and has given us a clean bill of health.

Alvin Hrna won the door prize for May. Adjournment followed payment of dues. The next meeting will be June 14th, at 8 p.m.

County Fairgrounds). Everyone should bring a covered dish and salad and dessert. The lodge will furnish barbecued chicken and refreshments. Bring your swimsuit and swim in the beautiful Guadalupe River.

The Polka Fest will be held July 30 which will be another exciting event; nine hoUrs of dancing with three bands, kolazhe, sausage and other foods and drinks will be available. The Polka Fest will be at Eagles Hall in New Braunfels.

We will soon publish more particulars. President Roy Haag will send a letter to all members regarding the festival.

LODGE NO. 28, EAST BERNARD Dear Members: We all wish to announce that the meeting time for our regular meeting has been changed from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., for the months of June, July, August, and September, due to daylight saving Time. The 2 p.m. schedule will be resumed with the October meeting, so our June 4th meeting will start at 2:30 p.m.

The June meeting social will be in honor of Father's Day. We hope the sisters will be as generous this meeting as the last. The lodge will furnish the drinks and sandwiches.

We wish to thank the sisters who brought the food to the May meeting. We hope the attendance in the June meeting will be as good or better than in May. In other SPJST matters, Sister Lillie Nezval along with this reporter, had the honor to be invited to the 25th anniversary banquet of Hallettsville Lodge No. 4 Youth Club. 12 LODGE NO. 188, CENTERVILLE Dear Members: Deerest Lodge No. 188 will have a covered dish supper at the regular meeting Monday, June 5th, at 7:30 p.m., in honor of Melinda Faust and Mike Wilson, betrothed, July 1st. Melinda is District I Youth Counselor and Mike is Lodge No. 188 assistant youth leader. Everyone please bring a covered dish.

Iced tea wil be furnished.

The regular May meeting was well attended and we were honored to have Jeanette and Silas Smith to visit our new lodge; they were unable to attend the dedication due to a conflicting engagement.

These two persons are the reason for Lodge 188's beginning. We will always be grateful to them for our first impression of the SPJST and their continued support along with all the Supreme Lodge officers, employees and members.

The meetings will be the first Monday of each month according to our rules and regulations, unless sufficient prior notification is given.

Miss Judy Champion, daughter of Maurice and Mary Ann Champion, of Buffalo, will represent Lodge 188 in the Rodeo Queen's Contest at the Madisonville Sidewalk Cattlemen's Association four-day annual celebration on the first weekend in June.

Forty-seven new members were accepted into membership at Lodge 188.

Skating will be continued on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. and also tenative time in the month of June — Wednesday afternoon — from 2 to 4 p.m., according to Sue Gresham, chairperson; that's two days a week.

Fern and Robbie Robinson have been invaluable in the skating activities. Robbie takes care of registration and Fern has provided the availability to purchase cold drinks.

This is what makes SPJST work -- volunteer pitchin' in and takin' up the slack -- it's all a part of fraternalism. We are proud of our members. If you wish to order skates, please contact Sue Greshman or Emma Bass.

The Country Renditions of Caldwell entertained a big crowd Saturday evening, May 20th. Everyone enjoyed the variety of music played. They will be back, so watch the Vestnik Calendar every week, on

page 31.

Youth members be sure to make every effort to attend the June 5th meeting so we can set a date for our annual youth banquet and dance, plus summer activities will be announced.

Fraternally Jacquelyn Wakefield - SPJST — LODGE NO. 15, BUCKHOLTS Dear Members and Friends: May 10th, 1978 at 7 p.m., our vice president, Sister Ann Balusek opened and concluded the meeting because our president got his time mixed up.

The pledge of allegiance was recited, and one visitor was recognized, namely Dan Balusek.

After the secretary read the minutes, monthly reports were given by all chairmen.

On the sick list are Brother A. W. Zajicek, Sr., and Sister Robin Renee Turner. We wish both a speedy recovery. Sister Clara Balusek also was in the hospital, but is up and about.

Jacob Scott An•ca was accepted as a new member.

Liability insurance on our lodge hail was renewed.

The social for our 50-year members was held May 21st at 2 p.m.

We had five 50-year SPJST membership pin recipients; only four of them could attend, namely: Sister Annie Fuchs, Matilda Havlik, Minnie Vybiral, and Brother Bennie Janes. Brother Louis Svetlik was not permitted to attend because of his health. We did not forget him, a plate of food was taken to his home. There were plenty of goodies to eat. The cake for the honorees was baked by Seraphine Sefcik, and was beautiful.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, June 14th, at 7:30 p.m.

Members were reminded of a Cleanup Day at the lodge, which was scheduled for May 6th, at 3:30 p.m. The youth were also reminded of the lodge activities planned for May 27th. A baseball game at 3 p.m. and practice for YAD were planned; then, at 7:30 p.m., there was a covered dish supper. All members and guests were asked to come out and enjoy the evening.

Wednesday, May 31, 1978 After the songfest we had a short business meeting, the minutes of our last meeting were read and accepted as written. We discussed our forthcoming picnic on June 4th at the Leon Zavodny farm.

The committee reported they would have the meal ready at 1 p.m. The choral club will furnish the baxbeeued chicken and beef and the ladies are asked to bring the salads, sweets and drinks. Also bring your chairs and card tables.

It was agreed that we would sing at the Four Seasons Rest Home, located at 1700 . Marl Wood at 7:30 p.m. but please everyone of us be at the home at 7:15 dressed in our costumes. Let's all turnout and make those people happy; we can all be thankful that we are privileged to bring a little joy to our old people.

Dear Members and Friends: The officers and board of trustees' meeting took place May 16th, at 8 p.m.

The committees gave their reports and they were good. Maintenance Chairman, Brother Chillie Hodges, did some repair work on the rest rooms and other things that had to be repaired; also the other work that had to be done, such as sewer lines repairs that had to be redone as soon as possible. There is always plenty to do in keeping the lodge building in good shape and we appreciate all who help care for the lodge.

I forgot to mention the work that was done May 12th, the date set for Cleanup Day of the grounds and the inside lodge work. There had been lots of scrubbing and cleaning done, and we had 18 members present for the Clean-up Day and they all worked hard. We are proud of you who took part in this undertaking.

We had American Sunrise to provide music for our dancing fans May 20th. We had a good crowd and everyone had a good time.

Mona Smith worked in the ticket booth and Sister Dorothy and Huie Smith were hosts. Everyone who worked did their assignments well.

We had many members who hadn't attended our lodge for some time who were back again. We are

always happy to see a good crowd attend our dances and other functions; we need all of you and, with the cost of everything going up, by having big crowds we won't have to go up on the admission.

The large attendance is needed and we have to have enough income proceeds to take care of the overhead cost of operating a lodge.

I almost forgot: At the officers' meeting, it was voted and decided to have our regular meetings every month on the second Monday at 8 p.m.; so remember, our next meeting will be June 12th.

Fraternally, Chester Shmoldas - SPJST — LODGE NO. 29, TAYLOR Dear Members: Our regular monthly meeting was held Thursday, May 11th, at 7:30 p.m. with President Edwin Adaanek presiding and he also led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased Brothers Lad Simcik and Adolf Kropp.

After roll call of officers Secretary Mike Kaiser read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Albin Machu gave the treasurer's report and Herbert Riethmeyer gave the property committee report.

Audit reports for January, February and March were given by Sister Dorothy Hirt.

We have two members who joined our lodge. They are Cathy Morgan Hell and Jennifer Ann Ritchy.

Four members transferred from Lodge 20, Granger, to our lodge.

They are Billy Simcik, Kevin Gene Simcik and June Ann Simcik.

Correspondence notes read were a thank-you letter from Frances Schwenker, administrator of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor, thanking our lodge for helping make the open house a success for baking cookies and also making punch; a letter from Minnie Pokorny stating that our insurance paid all the expenses, except $3 on her broken wrist when she fell itt the lodge.

President Adamek also showed us a certificate of appreciation our ilodge received ',for participating during the Bicentennial in 1976.

Our May Fete is over for this year and we had a good turnout.

Our May Fete was very pretty; the stage was decorated beautifully, and the youth who participated in the event, the queens, and princesses looked very nice. The May Fete committee did a great job. Even the food was delicious, too (barbecue with all the trimmings). The men did a good job there too, and so did all the workers who helped serve the food. With everyone's help the May Fete was a good success.

In the youth club report, Brother Steger announced there were 32 members present at their meeting and they have three new members. They had election of officers who will serve for 1978-79; President — Brenda Urbanek Vice President — Pam Steger Secretary — Donna Steger Reporter — Sharon Marburger Sgt.-at-Arms — Donnie Farrell In April Melvin and Geraldine attended a youth leaders' retreat at Val Verde which was real interesting and May 8th Brother and Sister Steger with Sister Kathryn Adamek went to the District II training class.

Door prizes were won by Anita Kaiser, Kathryn Adamek and Frances Tallas.

Dear Members and Friends: There is usually enough news to send in between meetings, but May and June are such busy months, activities accelerate in the same manner as Nature's awakening in the spring.

There are many weddings and socials I have not heard about but will report a few that I have learned of. Finishing as Boswell High was Lavonda Crow, granddaugh -terofMilandRuolphWrbe.

Michael ICratky graduated from Castleberry High, and Michael Paprskar received his degree from Lee College in Baytown. Congratulations to all of them. Millie Jo Waters was recently married to Yousef M. Al Owwardi at the home of her parents, Slim and Millie Waters. The newly-weds will be leaving for France. Alisa Dearing, 9, won first place in obstacle course competition at the May Fest in

14 Trinity Park. Alisa and her parents and brother Joe and grandparents, Vick and John Murphy, are all members of Lodge 92 as are John, Jr., wife and family.

Several members are in the hospital, or have been there lately.

Joe Dell Wruble, Joe Krivanek and Elmer Howard. Having surgery were Helen Kratky and Frances Jaworski, at All Saints in Fort Worth, and Anna Kratky was in Fort Hood Hospital where her husband Berni is stationed. Agnes Wruble has returned to the hospital from 1Viedicenter, and Bennie Bartek has been having eye tests in Dallas. We hope all are recovering or, better still, up and active.

By this time Ann Polk has probably returned from Walnut Hill, Calif., near Los Angeles, where she visited both of her daughters and families. Mary Margaret Dederichs was declared 1st Class Scout of her troop 372; winning a trip to Wyoming, and also finished elementary school at St. Andrew's.

She is the granddaughter of Eleanor and Al Svacek.

We regret that after a long and faithful tenure as managers of National Hall, Ima and Farmer Laymance are leaving us. They both have had serious illnesses the last two or three years and feel the need of retirement. We wish them many enjoyable days in their upcoming free time. Let's hope that we still will see a lot of them socially. Because of this we are now looking for someone to replace them. If you are interested or have knowledge of suitable persons contact our trustees, president, or any member.

TEXAS CZECHS' SYMPOSIUM SET FOR OCTOBER

To Everyone Interested in the Subject of Czech Culture in Texas: Texas A&M University has recently received a grant from the Texas Committee for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities for the purpose of holding a symposium entitled "The Czechs in Texas."

After much planning and several unavoidable delays, we are happy to announce that the symposium will take place in Temple, Oct. 27-29, 1978. An exact description of the location of the program will be printed in a broehure that will be available late this summer. But for now, we ask everyone interested in Czech culture to help in the following ways: 1. Spread the news! We want the largest possible audience for this event. Keep in mind that even the most academic presentations will be addressed to the general audience.

2. Help us locate informed and talented individuals and groups who would like to participate by a. presenting papers on subjects such as Czech-Texas history, religion, social structure, folklore, language, literature, economic contributions, music, farming practices, and so on.; b. discussing issues involving the Czech language, cultural assimilation, and genealogies in "panel discussion" formats; c. performing authentic Czech folk music and dance; d. preparing exhibits of Czech cooking, handicrafts, etc.

In order to plan the program, we must hear from you by July 20, 1978.

We welcome the participation of all interested individuals and groups, regardless of affiliation or point of view. Many issues to be discussed will be controversial and will surely call for a variety of responses. For example, should "Czech ethnic identity" be preserved and, if so, how can it be preserved? Are the Czech language and culture in Texas in a state of decline? If so, what, if any thing, should be done about it?

We hope that this symposium will encourage a lively discussion of many aspects of the Czech ethnic community in Texas, and that a new awareness and understanding of the issues will arise from it.

Friday, June 23rd, at 8 p.m. the puppeteer show DRAK, direct from Czechoslovakia, enroute to Lubbock for the International Puppet Show, will perform at Lodge No. 84. A small admission will be charged and following the show, refreshments will be available.

Plan to attend from near and far.

June 3rd, the Polka Patriot Orch. will entertain for your dancing pleasure, and on June 17th, a country-western dance with the Otis Beck Band. Yes, it's one night that everyone will enjoy staying on the dance floor.

LODGE NO. 180, BuittitsoN Dear Members and Friends: We have our first dance scheduled on July 1st, at our new home, with music by Jodie J. Dubec and the Silvertones from Thrall, so time is slowly creeping up on us.

Our grand opening is scheduled for the weekend of August 25th, 26th, and 27th, with music by the Ernie Kucera Orchestra from Nebraska on Friday, Aug. 25th. Our formal dedication ceremonies, dinner and dance with music that evening ;by Rollin' With The Flow, on Saturday, the 26th; Sunday the 27th, a battle dance with the Adamcik Polkatones and the Texas Czech Playboys playing, so plan for a big weekend to spend in Burleson.

The T-Ball Team our lodge is sponsoring is in first place and about half the team are members of our lodge. Our youth leader, Brother Parnell is head coach.

The team will be playing at Bartlett Park in Burleson for the following games: June 3 — 10 a.m.

June 10th — 8:30 a.m.

June 17 — 11:30 a.m.

Try and make some of the games and give them some support.

The descendants of John and Josef Bayer will hold their family reunion at the KC Hall in Schulenburg, Sunday, June 18th, 1978. The KC Hall is on Hwy. 77, just south of Interstate 10 and a block or so when one drives south from the railroad underpass. From Hallettsvine, Yoakum and Victoria one approaches the hall from the south on Hwy. 77 before reaching the underpass.

Registration of members and guests will commence about 10 a.m.

Each family is requested to bring prepared food in covered dishes, enough for themselves and any guests they may have along. Coffee, tea, and other refreshments will be at the hall.

This is our first reunion in Fayette County. The Bayer brothers, John and Josef, arrived from Stramberk, Czechoslovakia, in the year 1873 and settled in Dubina, about five miles from Schulenburg. The family is celebrating its 105th year in Texas.

HOUSE Valedictorian Richard House of Charlotte has been named valedictorian during 1978 graduation exercises held May 30th, 1978, at Charlotte High School.

Richard has been active in several school affairs. He played football, basketball and golf.

He served as president of the National Honor Society and Charlotte FFA Chapter; held office as treasurer of the Student Council and Drama Club; served as copy editor; was selected sweetheart of the school paper; and was a member of the annual staff. He also participated in U1L number sense, typing and debate.

In addition to his activities, he played trombone in the school band and was active in all band contests.

Richard was listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. He was selected as Mr. CMS and "Most Likely to Succeed."

Richard and his parents, Lloyd and Bettie House, and his sister, Sandra, are members of SPJST Lodge No. 161, Jourdanton. His maternal grandmother is District VII Sales Representative Tillie Valchar, and his paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Jim House of Tilden.

LODGE NO. 50, EL CAMPO Dear Readers, We held our monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Eugene Rek on May 17, at 7:30 p.m.

The meeting was opened with the pledge of allegiance.

The secretary read the minutes and the treasurer collected the dues.

We discussed YAD, election of officers and camp.

There were 16 members present.

We had one guest, Roxanne Yoekey, who was making up an SPJST meeting.

Door prizes were won by Amanda Vanek and Lisa Sebesta.

We then had election of officers.

The officers for 1978-79 are as follows: President — Kim Vanek Vice President — Greg Goerig Secretary — Chris Goerig Treasurer — Jeff Goerig.

Under new business a swimming party for the summer was planned.

The volleyball tournament that we had discussed was postponed until the July meeting.

The next item in our meeting was the program which was turned over to Melinda Faust who answered questions about YAD and led the children in various games.

ANTON G. MAZANEC, age 79, of 1312 Lisa, who died Sunday night, April 30th in a Waco hospital.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Monday at Wilkirson-Hatch Chapel.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with Rev. George Tzaflakes officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in West.

Brother Mazanec was born Nov. 24, 1898, in Waco. He was a dairyman and poultryman. He was a long-time member of Lodge 66 in Waco. He was active in the lodge and held offices including the presidency. He was also active in church work and was honored by Bishop Vincent Harris for his work.

Survivors include his- wife, Carrie; a daughter, Ms. Evelyn Urib,. ish of Robstown; two grandsons, Richard Urbis of New York, David Urbis of Corpus Christi; a granddaughter, Joan Urbis of Robstown; great-granddaughter, Karleen Urbise of Robstown; a brother, E. G. Mazanec of Waco; two stepsons, Carlo and Sammy Salvato, and several nieces, and nephews.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.
