Home No. I, however, we had preiously committed ourselves to attend the District VI Sales Representatives' Banquet given by District V1 SR Edwin Smajstrla for the District VII SRs. As usual, he and his wife had a nice affair arranged and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening at Hillje Lodge No. 40 hall, where it was held.

Many good, down-to-earth fraternalists are in the area. Our district sales representatives are to be commended for their dedicated work in our fraternal circles and in the midst of our local lodge representatives. * * Sunday, April 23rd we attended the District IV meeting in Rowena at Lodge No. 49., They had a nice meeting in their newly-remodeled lodge hall of which they are justly proud.

We were amazed at how many 50-year-plus members of District IV were present. We hope to have their picture in our next issue.

In this area of our state you find very hardy people who work hard for a living and enjoy life doing so.

It is a far-strungout district of our SPJST, however, always to be counted on to take interest in our Society's affairs. * * Happiness . . . the word itself arouses a certain feeling within the innermost part of the heart of each of us. Who is not in pursuit of happiness? Who is not constantly angling for ways and means to attain that certain feeling or hapPineSs, that, rightly so or not, will result in the happiness, defined by each individual.

How much grief and strife has been caused by the struggle to achieve happiness before it finally made its way to someone who gave all but his life for it?

Happiness is not measured in the same degree by all — some are happy for the sheer job of being alive. Others find happiness in sacrificing their lives for the betterment of mankind. Still others find a quiet sort of haippi-. ness in the domicile of their immediate families. And others find happiness in making life miserable for those about them. And those who tolerate unhappiness are equally guilty for not changing their life and trying to achieve happiness or at least peace of mind.

The purposes of the contribution include partial scholarships for students of the language and for improved instruction, promotion, and enrichment of ... Czech cultural programs . . . and other activities or materials . . . " ACC President Allbright said, "we sincerely appreciate the good work being done

by Mr. Souchek instructing students in our Conversational Czech classes. These classes are often attended by entire families, and their end-of-class activities are always a pleasant experience for all. We are also grateful that the SPJST continues to support this worthwhile activity."

Souchek and his wife, Alice, have been making the journey to Alvin once a week since September, 1974, when Conversational Czech was first offered at ACC.

The annual $1,000 to the Southern District, American Sokol Organization was also paid.

In addition, one instructor at one university was subsidized for

the school term 1976-77, and is continuing to receive a subsidy for 1977-78.

All of the above information indicates a definite interest by the membership of the SPJST, acting through their delegates in convention. The SPJST is doing its part in supporting Czech programs throughout the State of Texas.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE LEGAL ADVISER Dear Members: Recently I had the opportunity to talk to the presidents' section at workshops held by the Supreme Lodge officers, Brothers Morris, Mikeska, and Mikulas, at Taylor, Hallettsville and Ennis. In the time allotted, I briefly reviewed a number of things our local lodges should do with respect to keeping detailed records of the operations of the lodges; applying for and displaying necessary licenses and/ or permits; filing reports and paying required taxes, including taxes

6 such as sales tax, social security, withholding and unemployment compensation; admission taxes (to dances and, other activities open to the public); and ad valorem taxes.

I also discussed, very briefly, the lodge operations pertaining to what is commonly being referred to as "related" and "unrelated" business. This latter subject prompted many questions, some of which are difficult to answer.

The 1969 tax reform act requires local lodges, if their income exceeds specified amounts, to file IRS Form 99() and/or 990T. Our secretary, Brother Mikeska, has periodically circulated informational directives pertaining to the filing of such reports.

Form 990 is primarily an information report that is required to report the operations of a lodge with respect to "related" business. Form 990T is required by lodges engaging in "unrelated" business, if their income exceeds a specified amount, and further requires an income tax to be paid on the adjusted gross income of such lodge.

As a state chartered fraternal life insurance company, we are required to abide by whatever state and federal laws apply to us.

Penalties are imposed for failing to do so. Because of being a nonprofit fraternal life insurance company, we are accorded certain privileges that are important to our successful operation. Some of such privileges given to the Society carry over to the local level, but only so long as the lodge operation is limited or confined to the purposes for Which the lodge was organized and chartered.

"Unrelated" business can generally be defined as being an activity or business which is outside of the scope of the purposes for which a lodge has been organized and chartered. The purposes for which a lodge is organized and chartered can be determined from a study of your Society's Charter, granted by the State of Texas, and the Society's by-laws. Such defined purposes have remained the same since the date of incorporation.

When I filed Articles of Amendment to our Charter some time ago, I requested, and the State of Texas permitted, our name to be changed to the English translation of our original name; and

gave our Society a perpetual existence. (The Charter Amendment had been directed by the 22nd Convention).

A lodge is engaged in "unrelated" business whenever it commences to cater to the public on a regular basis; that is, whenever it starts to operate outside of the scope of the purposes for which it was organized and chartered. Income from any such operation is subject to income tax. I might add, however, that "unrelated" income will not be taxed if it is from a temporary kind of activity. An occasional dance to which the public is admitted for a charge is not necessarily a trade or business "regularly" carried on. But a trade or business otherwise "unrelated" would not become "related" merely because some incidental use was made of the lodge's facilities by the organization to further the exempt purposes for which it was set up. if we are to continue as a nonprofit fraternal life insurance company, enjoying the benefits given us by law, then it is important to us as individual members that our operations, including all lodge operations, be limited to the purposes stated in our State of Texas Charter and re-stated, every four years in our Society's by-laws.

Fraternally, Marian J. Kadlecek Recording Secretary - SPJST — LODGE NO. 180, B'URLESON Dear Members and Friends: We have had a very productive and busy month. Our groundbreaking activities went very well as we had an excellent turnout and the weather was sunny but a bit windy. We were pleased to have the Supreme Lodge represented by Brother Nick Morris, District III Director Ski Pokladnik and District IV Director Stanley Broz. Other special guests were Burleson Mayor Robert Ables, City Councilman Jack Clapp, Johnson County Sheriff Stuart Huffman, and the president of the First National Bank of Joshua, Mr. Don Stanley.

Our building contractor, L. 0.

Bentley and Associates, was represented by Richard Lowe. There were approximately '75 members and friends attending this event and most took part in the turning of dirt. Following, the ceremony, refreshments were served.

Our regular lodge meeting was held April 6th at St. Ann's Catholic Church at 8 p.m.

Among the general reports from our officers and committee chairmen, Brother Mike Hejl, reported that the donations for tables and chairs for our new hall, taken at the ground - breaking, totaled $627.98: Kenneth and Mary Ann Krivanek, $100; Cyril and Justine Pokladnik, $100; Dennis and Sandra Barabas, in memory of Joe Barabas, Sr., $97.72; Edmond and Milady Hell in memory of Henry H. Heil, $97.72; Mike and Mary Hejl in memory of Josef Blaha, $97.72; Jerry, Karen, Brad, and Jeff Janek, in memory of Frank and Wilma Janek, $97.72; Albert Kubala $12.34; Paul Montanio, $12.34; W. Don Standley, $6.25; and Doris Smajstrla, $6.17.

Brother Hell is doing a fine job in acquiring the funds for our hall furnishings.

Our tickets are ready for the

7 grand opening drawing. First prize is a 19-inch portable color TV, 2nd prize is a 12-gauge pump shotgun, and third prize is a 40-channel CB radio. If you haven't received your tickets yet, please contact Bob Smajstrla or Bill Hammons.

We adopted a set of rules and regulations for our lodge and elected trustees: Buz Tankersley, Mike Hejl, Bob Smajstrla, and Bill Slavik.

Thursday night, April 20th, we were honored to have Brother Alvin Nesuda speak to us on inheritance tax and estate planning.

It was a very interesting and informative evening and I know everyone there benefited greatly. We also had a local attorney, Mr. David Coggin, present, and he enlightened us on the needs of having a will and various ways to handle estate distribution.

Our next regular meeting will be May 4th at 7:30 p.m. at St. Ann's The youth meeting will be at 6:45 p.m. I hope to see you then.

Fraternally, Sandra Barabas Secretary SPJST — LODGE NO. 80, HOLLAND Dear Members and Friends: Our regular monthly meeting was held Sunday, April 2nd, at 2 p.m. with President Ivicic presiding. The pledge of allegiance was recited by the members.

The minutes of the March meeting were read by the temporary secretary, Clifton Martinets. They were adopted as read.

One new member was accepted into our lodge and one member had taken out additional insurance.

The bar chairman gave a good report and so did the dance floor chairman, plus our treasurer, Brother Latham, who gave the financial report of the lodge.

The air-conditioning of our hall was discussed and it was agreed to get them overhauled.

Nominations were in order for secretary of the lodge since the resignation of Mrs. Ivicic in the March meeting was accepted. Alvin Martinets was nominated for recording secretary and was elected by acclamation. Brother Alvin, we are glad to have you back as our secretary. Brother Martinets held this position in our lodge before.

Next in order was to make plans

for the annual picnic to be held Sunday, May 28th. This is always a big day here for our lodge, so you good people out there try to be with us on that day; more on this in my next letter, in May. And tip your hats to the ladies; we don't see much of this anymore.

The lodge will furnish the beverages to drink. Our honored members will receive their 50-year membership pins at this meeting. Treasurer's report followed, which was given by Sister Kathleen Jurca. All our committees gave reports including the bar, kitchen, inventory, and auditing.

Frank Louis Davis is our newest member.

May 21st, 1978, at 2 p.m. is the date and time scheduled for a

social honoring this year's 50-year SPJST membership pin recipients: Sisters Annie Fuchs, Matilda Havlik and Minnie Vybiral, and Brothers Bennie Janes and Louis Svetlik. Don't forget this date! We want all of you to be present.

Fraternally, Viola Sevelk SPJST — LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The dance Friday, April 21st, with music by the Leroy Rybak band was poorly attended and you wonder why. This polka band plays very good music, but they are new at our lodge and people don't give the band a chance to prove themselves and also don't give themselves a chance to find out if they like the music or not.

Please, next time, if we feature a new band, come out and find out whether they are what you like to hear, before you reject them, especially if you are a polka fan.

Saturday, the 22nd, we had the Knights of Dixie, who have played for us for many years and are well known and established and have their following at Lodge 88 and always bring in a full house.

This dance was hosted by Georgie Barcak, in charge and taking care of the box office was her spouse, Gene, with Clarence Ehler, who were quite busy through the rush hour. Evelyn Mier was at the door.

This was not a formal dance, but even at that most of our lady guests dress up and so do our hostesses. Georgie, in a shocking pink gown, and Evelyn in a becoming bright red, both looked lovely.

Sunday, April 23 our presentation of the operetta "Romance of a Beautiful Gypsy was a huge success. The day was bright, clear and very pleasant and we were very happy with so many guests to honor us with their visit. We appreciate and thank every guest, who came from far and wide. A bus from Dallas filled with 41 occupants arrived at 11:15 a.m. I wish I could name everyone of the guests, but be assured we appreciated each one who honored us with their presence. Among the arrivals were District III Director Brother 8Id

Wednesday, May 3, 1978 Pokladnik and his wife, Justine, and Miss Anezka Houdek, the faithful Czech correspondent to our Vestnik, and her two brothers, Joe and Willie Houdek, plus old-timer and faithful SPJST member Brother Duron from Lodge No. 84 and a well-known figure in our circles, and a/so Calvin and Mildred Chervenka. The first ones to arrive by ear from Dallas were Jim and Lydia Pavelka with Lydia's mother, Mrs. Zemanek of Blessing, followed by two brothers, J. J. and Gilbert Jochec with Lad Vitek, all from Fayetteville. A car chauffered by Della Holub of Hillje (at one time a member of Lodge 88), arrived in company with Louis Blinka and James and Claudia Marek and, on the way, Della picked up Emil and Lillian Holub of Louise. Brother and Sister Louis and Elsie Roznovsky had visitors from Omaha, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Tom and Hettie Brudny and they invited them to see the operetta and our lovely lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Brudny arrived April 20th and will be on their way back home May 3rd.

Brother Jerry Pokorny was with his daughter, Mina Pokorny, who is visiting with her father from Czechoslovakia for several weeks.

Mrs. Alice Hamer enjoyed the Sunday in the company of her nephew, our lodge president, Jerry Ermis, and niece, Della Glumb.

We had a very nice turnout, but if our Lodge 88 members would have been more thoughtful and supported this operetta, which took months to be staged by the handful of participants, and all the preparations it took by the other committees trying to please everyone, then our huge Chandelier Ballroom would have been filled to capacity. We also missed Teofil Halama, Czech instructor from the University of Houston and his students. We wish to thank all the guests from far and near and also thanks to all our generous pastry donors; we do appreciate everything.

LODGE NO. 175, ROSENBERG Dear Members: It is with a great deal of pleasure and pride that I write to report on our kolache and strudel concession at the recent Czech Fest held at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds. It was a tremendous success not so much monetarily as a job well done.

With the able help and support of Ann and Bill Robinson, Elizabeth Cockrell, Barbara Vacek, Karen Krejci, Kenneth Bryson, Norbert Scotka, Wanda and Wayne Warren, Gay and Harvey Bryson, Bernice Kveton, Clara Wosnizski, Bessie and Arnold Franek, Helen and Albert Bryson and supersalesman Lenard Steglich, and of course, my wife, Ann 1)yvial. We sold all our products down to the last cup of coffee. We even had a friend and relative, Mr. Art Cook from Woodville here to make deliveries.

We do not forget those who made a contribution with cash or products to our endeavors; these wonderful people were: Mrs. Milton Geick, Mrs. John Moore, Mrs. Henry Brau, Mrs. Lillie Mae Toon and Mr. Allan Hurta. This was very important to us for it was much of a chore to locate and have prepared the large number of kolache and strudel necessary to keep our booth open.

There were so many people who asked: "What does SPJST mean?

It was impossible to explain or translate so next year we will make a request of the Supreme Lodge to try to locate a large banner or plaque with the proper words spelled in Czech. Are you reading this Brother Morris? We would use it to decorate our booth and advertise our fraternity.

It is most rewarding to work with such good and faithful brothers and sisters. Thank you for a job well done!

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends: Just a reminder that our May meeting has been moved ahead a week to May 7th, because of Mother's Day, which falls on our regular meeting date. Victor and Helbing Murphy asked me to tell you that a ham dinner will be served.

They have been offering us some very tasty meals since they volunteered responsibility for the task for the whole year.

One of our young members, Chris Oujesky was the victim of an accident on his motorcycle. He suffered injury to his collarbone and legs plus other cuts and bruises. His grandfather, Steve Matusevich, is still recovering from a fall. In our last letter it was stated he was helping a neighbor who fell. It should have read, he fell while helping a neighbor.

Of course, I told them we are going to have Ted Hardin and The New Sounds; they were booked as all of you saw that in the Calendar section in the back portion of our SPJST Vestnik.

Something happened because they were unable to come, so again our faithful Crockett Westerneers performed real well and everyone enjoyed themselves at our Saturday night, April 22nd dance.

We had Sister Loma Smith working in the ticket booth for the first time. We are proud to have you, Lorna, for being a great helper and caring for the lodge. Brother J. D. and Sister Fern McCullough were hosts Erma Marsh, fElilly Bobalik and others helped by working in the refreshment department; they are always doing a good job.

We will have a cleanup day Sunday, May 7th, at 2 p.m., with Lodge No. 74 furnishing the meal after all the work is done.

The roses on- the chair-length fence should be blooming out by May 7th. The lodge grounds are in pretty good shape and so are the flowers, except around the gar-

bage dump where there is quite a large amount of paper cups and plates scattered, so there won't be that much to do. All of you members come and show that you are interested in the lodge; even if there won't be too much to do, except having a lot of fellowship which will be of value to all of us.

Mildred and I were disappointed to learn the trip to Europe which was planned by Harry Czarnek and The Texas Dutchmen for May 31st, 1978, was cancelled. We had planned to visit Prague, Czechoslovakia with an additional three or four countries on the continent.i Maybe we will have a chance later. Goodbye for now.

LODGE NO. 29, TAYLOR Dear Members: SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor, held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, April 2nd at 4 p.m. President Adamek called the meeting to order and Edwina Adamek led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our member, Brother Samuel Albrecht, Roll call of officers was read; absent were Bob and Viola Rafferty. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer's report was also given.

Correspondence included a thankyou letter from SL President Nick Morris thanking our lodge for having the workshop at Taylor.

The ladies served a good meal.

Also from the Girl Scouts for having their banquet at the lodge hall.

New members received were': Curtis Heckman, Stephen Lefner, Marianne Zrubek and Vencil Mares.

Transferred from Granger lodge were Rochell Hall, Stephanie Hall, Leslie Hall and Christine Hall.

Youth Leader Melvin Steger reported that 44 youth members were present at their meeting and that the youth members are making good money with the paper drive and will continue with it.

The youth also helped serve punch it the celebration at the S.•.T.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Sunday, April 16th.

The May Fete Committee put in lots of time and hard work for our May Fete. We hope everyone turns out for this event and we invite our neighboring lodges to come and celebrate with us. There will be a grand march at 6 p.m.; music will be by Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six. The dance will be from 4 to 10 pm.

We also congratulate Rome Milan who was honored as Freshman of the Year at the University of Texa.s; and Lori Steinman, selected for the Junior Varsity cheerleader for North Side High School, Brother Emil Milan was named Coach of the Year in San Angelo, last week for the second time and Brother Jerry Milan for a Sokol Leader. Congratulations to all of you!

Our youth member, Thane Parker, will enterl the hospital for

knee surgery. He injured his knee in football practice. We wish you a speedy recovery.

Dear Members and Friends: The Warrenton Lodge No. 179 held their regular meeting recently in Warrenton Store Guest Room with a fairly good attendance.

Vice President El Gene Eckermann, in the absence of our president, called the meeting to order and also led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting, and Dorothy Oltmann gave the financial standing. Both reports were accepted as read.

Our treasurer, Lee Leonhardt being on the sick list, Sister Helen Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report, and it also remained unchanged.

OId business was of a routine manner.

In new business, a band committee was named and is composed Paula Key, of the following

Dorothy Oltmann and Doris Eckermann.

The food committee reported that at our next regular meeting, the lodge will furnish cold cuts and anyone wishing to bring a dessert may do so by bringing a cake, cookies, pies or the like.

We hope that all those on the sick list have a speedy recovery and we hope to see you at our next regular meeting, May 12th at 8 p.m.

With no further business our meeting adjourned.

After the meeting, members and guests enjoyed sandwiches, 'cake, cookies, pie, chips, pickles and refreshments.

The remainder of the evening was spent in good fellowship.

We opened league play Tuesday night, April 18th against Zip's Paint in the Tuesday night City Major League. We had to go into extra innings to win by a score of 5 to 3. Lionel Schulz started on the mound and went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 hits, 3 runs and had 2 strikeouts and was relieved by Ralph Stauss who allowed 1 hit in 1 and 1/3 innings and was the winning pitcher.

Hitters were Robert Weyman, with a double, a single, and a sacrifice; Roy Andrews with a triple, a single and 2 walks; Don Jarma with a triple and a sacrifice; Jerry Zabojnik, a single and a walk;

12 Lionel Schulz, a single; Don Lennox and Ralph Stauss, both got on base via bases on balls. It was a real good game and we even had some loyal fans at the game.

We played in the Greater Dallas Tournament at Kiest Park, Dallas, last weekend and our first game was Friday night, April 21st at 6 p.m. against Hampton Place Baptist No. 2. We lost a very close and exciting ball game by the score of 3 to 2; losing the game in the bottom of the 7th inning with 2 outs, and their player hit a home run. By losing this game we went into the losers' bracket and we had to play Saturday morning, at 11 a.m.

Lionel Schulz was on the mound and pitched a very good game which we really should have won.

He allowed 6 hits, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts.

Hitters: Jeff Burton with 2 singles and a walk; Don Jarma with a single and a walk; Mark Winkler with a single and a walk; Roy Andrews, a single; Jerry Zabojnik, a single and a walk; Larry Brennan, a single; and Lionel Schulz, a walk.

Saturday morning, April 22nd, at 11 a.m., we played Metroplex Paint and Body from Fort Worth and we won by a score of 4 to 3, again, we had to go two extra innings before we won the game on a double and an error in the outfield, allowing Connie Brennan a trip around the bases for the winning run. Boy, was Brennan exhausted as well as happy, as was the whole team, to win the game.

Ralph Stauss hurled the first 7 innings allowing 10 hits and no walks, and Lionel Schulz pitched 2 innings allowing 1 hit and 1 base on balls, and was declared the winning pitcher.

Hitters were Don Jarma with a double and a single; Roy Andrews with a double, Galen Lindsey with a double, Jeff Burton with a single, Connie Brennan with a double, Ralph• Stauss with a single, and Robert Weyman, a walk.

After the game we had a picnic lunch with fried chicken, ham, salads, chips, soft drinks and pivo, enjoyed by all the players, their wives, friends and rooters. The food was delicious, and our thanks to everyone who brought the food and

drinks.

We had another game at 2 p.m. that afternoon and we played Astro Glass from Denton and it was another fine close game which ended 4-3 in their favor. It was a real close ball game with good pitching by both pitchers; they had 9 hits and we had 7. We really should have won the game but we let too many scoring opportunities slip by.

With a timely base hit or two, we could have won. Lionel Schulz hurled a fine game allowing 9 hits and 1 walk and struck out 8 batters.

Leading hitters included Robert Weyman with a double and a single; Don Jarma, 2 singles; Roy Andrews with a single; Jeff Burton, a single, and Don Lennox with a double.

By virtue of the loss, we were eliminated from the tournament.

We had fun, played good ball and gained valuable experience. Thanks to everyone who came and rooted for the team.

Our next league game was Tuesday night, April 25th at 8:30 p.m., at Samuel Grand Diamond No. 1.

Then on Tuesday night May 2,we were scheduled to play at the same diamond, at 8:30 p.m.

May I again remind our readers and all ex-ball players who have played with our Lodge 84 team at any time since it started in 1954 25 years ago -- that we are having a reunion and get-together Saturday evening, May 20th at 5 p.m. before our annual team benefit softball game that night. We plan to have a social of snacks and drinks and a lot of good visiting among all the players. Invitations will be sent out and we hope a response to these will be returned to give us an idea of how many exball players and families will attend. Should we have missed any of the past players, and this is possible, then let this be your invitation and come on out and be with us all for a grand evening.

We also hope that all or most of the ex-players and their families stay for the dance afterward starting at 8:30 p.m.

We invite all of our members and friends to make plans to attend our dance at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night, May 20th, with music by the Jodie Mikula Orchestra. We need your presence and your support in order that we can finance our

Meeting Called to Order: The spring meeting of District III SPJST was called to order at 11 a.m. by President Henry Skrabanek.

The pledge of allegiance to the American Flag and the SPJST Pledge were led by Flag Bearer Eddie Banik.

Welcome by President Carl Zich of Lodge 92: "District officers, Supreme Lodge officers, Brother Editor Rudy Sefcik, and officers of District III members and friends.

I want to welcome you to our lodge in behalf of our officers for being able to have your district meeting here. We welcome you and hope you have a very , nice informative meeting and a nice social and hope that when you leave our hall that you will remember us and come back. Thank you."

Murphy Dist. III Treasurer Sales Representative's Report: Brother Alvin Nesuda said, "Good evening Sisters, Brothers, Friends, Presidents. I would like to compliment Sister Wanda on pronouncing these Czech names." Brother Nesuda reported that it was something he was very particular about that is pronouncing names correctly because there is no greater insult than mispronouncing a name. "Last year we sold the largest amount of insurance in any one year, $28,000,000. Our assets total $24,000,000; and $117,000,000 in insurance. Last year four new lodge homes were built, two are now being built — Longview and Burleson. This growth does not happen by itself. This growth is teamwork by our sales representatives and their wives." He then asked the sales representatives to stand.

"This is only half of it. The Supreme Lodge does the other half of processing. They do this well." He then introduced Brother Mikulas from the SL and Brother Pokladnik.

District III Director C'yrill Pokladnik asked the lodges that if they didn't fill out the questionnaires about the lodges' activities that we should be sure and fill them out as soon as. possible. Brother Sid reported that he was glad to see so many at the officers' training seminars, because the SI'

14 goes to a lot of work to prepare for this. Brothers Pokladnik reported that the ground breaking ceremonies for Lodge 180, Burleson, were held April 1st. Our Society keeps growing and we must keep it fraternal.

District III Rest Home Director Cyril Pokladnik reported that the rest homes are doing fine. The Taylor rest home is going to have a 20th anniversary open house April 16. Anyone wishing to reside at one of the rest homes must be put on a waiting list and you don't have to be an SPJST member to be a resident of the homes.

District III Youth Counselor Ed Kamas reported that YAD will be June 25, camp will be July 25-28, State YAD will be Aug. 20th, State Royalty will be Sept. 30. Brother Kaxnas presented volleyball trophies to the 1976 champions: Lodges 35, 66, 84, 130,and 1977 champions: Lodge 6, and 54. Brother Kamas reported that the youth club is planning to buy, for their charity project, a turntable for the rest home. Brother Kamas introduced State King Steven Stanisla y. Steven said a few words.

Supreme Lodge report by Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas: Bro. Mikulas reported that Vice President Joe B. Hejny has been ill and he sent his greetings. Brother Mikutes presented Brother Murphy with a check for the Youth Fund ($2,123.75), and District III check for $250. He also reported that 1977 was our greatest year. He reported our assets and insurance sales.

Vestnik Editor Rudy Sefcik introduced Brother Joseph Becan who has been a member for 60 years. Brother Sefcik asked the membership to try and send in their mail a little sooner because the mall is slow.

Auditing Committee report — Chairman Paul Hagar reported that the committee found the treasurer's books (John Murphy is the treasurer), in good order as reported. Brother Sid Pokladnik moved that we accept the audit report, seconded by Brother Ed Lamas and passed by a show of hands from the membership present.

Brother Sefcik asked if they will be published in the Vestnik before the fall meeting and he expressed his opinion that he thought they should be published at the same time the minutes were. Brother Albert Banik then brought out that the proposals and changes should be published 30 days before the next meeting and voted on at that meeting. Brother Sid Pokladnik moved that they should be published so they can be studied, seconded

by Brother Edward R. Hykel and passed by a show of hands from the membership present. Brother Murphy asked why the committee thought the dues should be raised from 5 cents to 10 cents. Sister Sefcik reported the committee thought that the cost of living has going up so they thought we should go up also. Brother Murphy said that the district was doing okay and he didn't think we need to go up. Brother Rudy Sefcik reported that he agreed with Brother Murphy. Sister Helen Oates requested that we wait until the next meeting and discuss this.

New Business: President Skrabanek reported that he received a bill from Sister Sefcik for bringing the minutes up to date. The bill is $2.80 . President Skrabanek asked the membership what their wishes were. Brother Otto Hanus moved that we pay her and motion was seconded by Brother Ed Kamas and passed by a show of hands from the member-

ship.

LADLES' CIRCLE, LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Thursday morning, April 13th, our meeting was called to order

by President Anne Polk. Secretary's report and treasurer's report were approved as read. Twenty-five ladies were present, including three visitors. Visitors were Mrs. Cecilia Bartula and Mrs. Milava Yovanovich, who were guests of Sister Bessie Prochaska, and Mrs. Mary Pavey, our frequent guest.

The Circle enjoyed the visitors and welcomes them to come again.

A beautiful guest book was presented to the Circle by Sister Clara Cohen, given in memory of her late husband, Abe Cohen. This lovely guest book will be used at our future meetings to record the names of members and their guests. It is a nice replacement for the dogeared note book we have been using for a number of years. Thank you, Sister Clara Cohen.

The Circle received reports that Sister Agnes Wruble is seriously ill at the Medi-Center, Fort Worth, and Sister Helen Zich is also a patient •at the same hospital. Sister Rose Strnad, who became widowed in 1977, is now living in Southern Villa Rest Home, Temple. Sister Strnaci told her daughter, Sister Billie Spindor, that she likes her new home very much. Our former Sister and reporter, Jo Ann Hixson, is recovering at her home from a serious operation.

Before enjoying a luncheon served by the hostesses, "Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Martha Durham, Louise Gholdston, and Billie Spindor.

Our May 11th meeting will be a picnic at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens, 3220 Botanic Garden Drive. Members are asked to meet at the main entrance to the gar-

dens at 10:30 a.m. A short business meeting will be held. Bring your own picnic lunch and whatever you want to drink. In case the weather is unsuitable for an outdoor picnic, the Circle will meet at the National Hall, as usual.

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON CHORAL CLUB The Seaton Choral Club met last night for its regular rehearsal with the following members present: Alfred and Martha Klusacek, Alfred L. and Ginger Klusacek, Willie and Adeline Kohutek, Otto and Matilda Hanus, Ruby Bolton, Emily Stuteville, Leon Sodek, 1VIikeska, Bill and Lillian Kosarek, Annie Jakubec (our talented leader), Mathu and Elsie Cabla, Frank and Lillian Mikulec, Frank and Eleonora Spanhel, Bob and Mary Vasicek, Dorothy Pechal, Georgia Sodek, Leon and Vallie Zavodny and Ralph Milek (our accordionist). Thank you all for coming and those of you who couldn't be with us missed a lovely meeting and a great rehearsal and WE MISSED YOU! We sang a total of 22 beautiful songs and everyone of us enjoyed the evening very much. We need more male voices to really put on an outstanding performance and we invite all of you to come out to sing with us; even though you may think you cannot sing, why don't you come out and give it a try. Millions of people in this world would give their right arm to be able to get together like we do but due to conditions in the countries where they live, they cannot do it; here we have the grand privilege and we don't take advantage of it. LODGE NO. 32, VICTORIA PLANS CZECH FESTIVAL The first Czech festival in Victoria has been set for Sunday, May 21, 1978 starting at 11 a.m.

The event will be held at Sun Valley, five miles north of Victoria on the Cuero Hwy. Dinner will be served starting at 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. consisting of barbecued beef and sausage. A kolache booth will be opened throughout the afternoon.

A battle dance will be held at 3 p.m., continuing to 9 p.m., with music by the Leo Majek Orchestra from Corpus Christi and the Vanek Polka Band of Victoria.

FEATURES NUPTIAL UNITES JULIET SCHWARTZKOPF AND ROBERT VANDER PLOEG In an impressive wedding ceremony Saturday, April 22nd, at 4 p.m. in the St. Philip Catholic Church, El Campo, Juliet Joan Schwartzkopf and Robert Dirk Van der Ploeg were united in holy matrimony during nuptial mass, with the Rev. James C. Brunner officiating.

Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Schwartzkopf of El Campo, and Dr. and Mrs. Darl E. Vander Ploeg of San Antonio.

Grandparents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. Anton Kocurek, and Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Schwartzkoft, and the groom's grandmother is Mrs. Diller Vander Ploeg.

Karl and John Krauskopf served as altar boys. Candlelighter was Roy Polasek.

Performing ushers' duties were Gerald Thornton, Jeff Large and John Snell.

Joan Marie Houck and Hank Kremers were witnesses.

The couple chose a wedding with a Czech tradition which was beautifully executed with the splendid pre-nuptial mass concert by organist, Professor John Pech of Houston. The musical heritage prelude were "Ich Liebe Dich" by Edvard Grieg, and selections from "Prodana Nevesta," by Bedrich Smetana, "Paix Heroica," by Cesar Franck, and "Elegie" by Jules Massenet.

The wedding processional included "Lohengrin," by Richard Wagner.

white formal gown with a veil, and a bouquet of springtime flowers completed her bridal ensemble.

Mr. Chuck Schwartzkopf, the bride's father, was in charge of the readings during the mass.

Mrs. Birdie Hilsher of Houston, soloist, sang in English "Our Everlasting Love" (Naze Verne Milovani) by Smetana.

The bride's godparents, Mr . and Mrs, I. J. Mazoch, presented the offertory gifts while a traditional Czech hymn "Pojd Spasiteli" was sung.

"Midsummer Night's bream" by Felix Mendelsohn was selected for the recessional wedding march.

Wedding Party Nora Schwartzkopf, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Matron of honor was Mary Kay Beard.

Bridesmaids included Shirley Kocurek, Kathy Little and Mary Grace Polasek.

Serving as best man was Doug las Vander Ploeg. Groomsmen were Chuck Schwartzkopf, Jr., bride's brother, Nick Schwartzkopf, also brother of the bride, Bob Satterwhite and John Zanca• Lisa Ann Strelec was flower girl and Michael Kocurek was ring bearer.

Following the church ceremony, a traditional Czech-style wedding reception and dance were held at the Plainview Community Center, near El Campo where old-fashioned music was provided by Clifton Rolf and the Wanderers of El Campo. Mr., and Mrs. I. J. Mazoch led the grand march "Na Rozlocenou" (Farewell).

All the beautiful Czech hymns performed by Professor Pech and the Clifton Boif band have demonstrated to the people of all ethnic origins the richness of Czech musical culture.

The bride is a graduate of The University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She is employed in the account service department of McCann - Erickson-Advertising Agency's office in Houston.

The groom is also a University of Texas graduate with a Business Administration degree in petroleum land management. He is employed with the Mitchell Energy and Development Corp., as a junior landman in the petroleum land management department in Houston.

Here's hoping every club in our district has made plans to be on the program at the spring meeting. This will be our first meeting in the new hall at Corpus Christi.

This really calls for us to do our part to support this great day for Corpus Christi Lodge No. 79.

The date is May 7th and a program will be held right after lunch. Everyone get busy.

The Youth Leaders' rraining Class is being changed from May 6th to Sunday evening, May 21st.

Plans now are to meet halfway between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. We can make final pl for this at the spring meeting. Be there so you can have your say in the planning of this day.

YAD will be discussed at the spring meeting also. We will decide where we will hold this event; date is July 23rd.

Camp plans are being finalized.

We will have camp at Camp Idlewild in Comfort, Texas, again, this year; date has been set for July 31st through August 4th. This will be Monday after lunch through Friday breakfast. The meeting was opened by President Leeann Shimek . Vice President Kim Vanek led the pledge of allegiance. Secretary Veronica Bartos read the minutes of the last meeting. Treasurer Greg Goerig gave the treasurer's report, and Joseph Bartos gave the community report.

We worked on our scrapbook.

My assistant, Mrs. Georgie Hendemon and I reported on the training class we attended April 15th, at Taiton.

We discussed YAD which will be held in July. Also, we talked about the parade our youth took part in which opened the Wharton County Fair; we won 5th place and received a ribbon for it, this was held April 12th.

We had two visitors, Jennifer and Bart Morgan from Missouri City.

Next month we will have election of officers.

Adults present at our meeting were Dr. and Mrs. James Sebesta, Mrs. Anna Bartos, Mrs . Georgie Henderson, Mrs. Bernice Rek, Mrs. Rita Vanek and Mrs. Vlasta Bartos.

LODGE NO 48, REYERSVILLE Dear Members and Friends: This is a note of thanks to the SPJST through the Supreme Lodge for the marvelous weekend which we experienced at the State Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde. Sister Dorothy Massey had planned a good program of events.

The American Red Cross workshop taught by Mr. Anthony Fulbright was very informative and will help in our youth work.

Dr. John Wise was his excellent self again and gave many helpful pointers on dealing with youth.

The food was good, especially the cookout which we all helped prepare.

Thank you to State Youth Counselor Dorothy Massey and all the district youth counselors for the weekend of fun, fellowship and learning.

20 LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Readers, My husband and I attended the recent Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde, and I would like to comment on the work of our SYD, DYCs, and their assistants.

Being new in the youth club work, I feel that all of my questions were answered completely this past weekend. I know that what I have learned will improve our youth club.

The guest speakers from the Red Cross, and Dr. John Wise, all had excellent programs. Everyone who attended the retreat was friendly, helpful, and informative. I'm glad to have met some of the wonderful people who head our youth department.

I would like to thank all the people who made this weekend retreat possible with all their careful planning, effort and lots of energy.

I am looking forward to attending again next year.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members: The Lodge 88 Youth Club met for the April meeting at 3 p.m. April 9th, and was called to order by our president, Bobby Allbritton.

All old business was discussed and new business regarding District V camp was discussed Mrs. Dobesh will advice us at the May meeting as to who is eligible to go to camp.

Our youth leader, Mrs. Wahlberg, talked about going to Pipe Organ Pizza in Memorial City after the meeting. Mrs. Wahlberg also talked to us about going to camp on June 14th. Mr. Wahlberg will be writing a letter to the Vestnik for all of us kids in District V advising what we will need and how we will be 0ing to camp.

District YAD was also discussed.

It will take place July 30th, and all of you kids in District V come on and compete. We all love competition and this .is the time to really get into the swing of it and it is really a blast even if you don't win you do have fun and make new friends. Making new friends with kids in other lodges is just as important as winning

and it leaves a real good feeling with all of us.

After our April meeting we went to Pipe Organ Pizza and had a blast. Those of you who did not attend the meeting and the outing to the pizza parlor missed a real good thing all around. We played games, ate ourselves out of this world with their pizza, and had a blast, all around.

A note also to remind you members that the May meeting will be May 7th, since Mother's Day is the next weekend. Remember your mothers.

The roll was called and there were 34 members and 7 adults present.

The minutes were read and then discussions were held. We discussed the upcoming events that the youth club will be doing. The main article was our trip to Astroworld. We plan to leave early May 29th and we plan to arrive in Houston in time to get in Astroworld when it opens.

Members will stay until closing time and then we will go to the motel.

Mrs. Hrncir gave her report and we talked about camp. Everyone is looking forward to camp and YAD. The meeting was then adjourned and refreshments were served. All of us are excited about the trip, to Astroworld and all of our activities.

Brother Ondrej was born in Cameron. He had lived in the Penelope area for the past 40 years.

He was a retired farmer and a member of the Catholic Church of The Nativity in Penelope. Brother Ondrej served in the Army in France during World War I. He was a member of the VFW Post 4819 of West, American Legion Post at West and SPJST Lodge No. 6.

REP. JOHN WHITMIRE State Representative, District 82 Harris County Mr. John Whitmire is the State Representative of District 82, which is located in Northwest Houston.

He is a graduate of Waltrip School and, received a degree in Political Science from the University of Houston. John Whitmire is a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 88, which is located in his legislative district. Whitmire was first elected to the office of State Representative in 1972 at the age of twentytwo. In the 63rd session of the Legislature he served on the Appropriations Committee, the Labor Committee, and the Human Resources Committee. He also served in the Constitutional Convention on the Executive Committee. Mr. Whitmire was re-elected in 1974, being unopposed in his campaign.

In the 64th session of the Legislature, he served on the Appropriations Committee and was the Vice-Chairman of the Business and Industry Committee. Representative Whitmire was unopposed in the 1978 November general election. He is now serving as ViceChairman of the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee and is a member of the Judicial Affairs Committee. Recently, Whitmire has been recognized for leading the fight against the city's unfair property tax increase in Northwest Houston.

JANE MATYASTIK SEEKS MILAM COUNTY JUDGESHIP Jane Rachel Matyastik, a practicing Cameron attorney and lifetime resident of Cameron, Milam County, has filed as a candidate for the office of Milani County Judge, subject to the Democratic Primary Election on May 6th, 1978.

Jane Matyastik was born and educated in Cameron. She attended and graduated from Ada Henderson School and Yoe High School with honors. She attended and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French, Latin and English. She taught French and English for one year and worked in the business world as a French translator for an international offshore drilling company. Prior to attending law school, she worked for Charles C. Smith, Jr., who was County Attorney at the time and formerly Milam County Judge.

Jane attended The University of Texas at Austin School of law and graduated with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. In the spring of 1976 Jane;served as a Judicial Clerk to Judge Thomas D. Blackwell, Judge of the 167th District Court, Austin, Travis County, Texas.

Jane is the youngest of seven children born to Rose Svetlik Matyastik and the late W. P. Matyastik. After graduation from the University of Texas School of Law, she returned home to Cameron, to open her law office and has been practicing law in Cameron since she was licensed and sworn in as an attorney to practice law in the State of Texas, in 1976. She opened her law office where her father and grandfather had a cotton gin.

Jane is a member of the Milam County Bar Association, the Texas

Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

Jane Matyastik is especially qualified to serve as Milam County Judge, who is required under the Texas Constitution and statute to know the law and "be well informed in the law of the State."

Jane appreciates the support and encouragement she has received from the people in her candidacy for the office of Milam County Judge. She pledged to earn the trust and confidence of the people by hard work and honesty in the county government and judiciary.

Jane is committed to better government for Milam County, to economy in government, to government responding to and meeting the needs of the people and the communities in the county, to participation in county government by its citizens and the people, and to equal justice under the law for all citizens in the county.

An analysis of the budget projected for Milam County for 1979 shows that doubling the present taxes for the county will barely cover the budget requests and expenses for 1979. Jane is concerned with inflation and efficiency in the county government, a concern she shares with all taxpayers in the county. She wants to be sure that Milam County gets its fair share of the revenue sharing money and grants from the Central Texas Council of Governments, and the Manpower Consortium.
