Across I I Editor's t; the Desk Throughout the nine-plus years having serveci, as your editor since January 1, 1969, this writer has been aware of many things which effect our Society more and more as time goes by and years pass. Of course that awareness was always present since becoming a member over 40 years ago; however, becomes more prevelant each year, especially since becoming your editor, and, as one member at the District II meeting in Seaton put it: "By gosh, you are the editor for all of us members — over 50,000 — elected by us through our delegates and if you know something tell us; we want to and need to know!"

In many editorials, especially the last few, I have tried to stress the real foundations on which our Society was founded. In the last issue, the Preamble was printed and for a purpose, because it contains these words: fraternal and social and generally, through moral, spiritual and economic respect to encourage benevolence and humanity through the Society with sound, practical life insurance, etc.

For a number of years, we could see this coming: a growing desire to tax the fraternal societies by our state and federal governments with the senators and representatives being lobby-pushed continually to do so, of course, the lobbying being done from other sources and there is plenty of it being done.

The member was right; I am the editor for all the membership and not just a few, and since that is the fact it is desirable that all the members read this carefully, because the SPJST Society is ours (all of us) and what happens to it, will effect all of us.

More and more, not only I, but others, have seen this coming slowly but surely. First, the IRS decides to tax local lodges on un-related income above a certain amount (the forms lodges are supposed to (Please turn to page 23)

Let's all of us get busy and see what we can do for the SPJST in 1978. Where can you find all that we have to offer? If anyone of you know where we can find better insurance and fraternal benefits please let me know. I personally come in contact with a lot of people with all kinds of society and insurance company insurance and I still have not found one that is equal to what we have to offer our members.

I attended the workshop class in Hallettsville in March and it was my pleasure to learn more.

Wednesday, April 26, 1978 LODGE NO. 38, KOVAR

Dear Members: On April 9th, the SPJST Lodge No. 38, Kovar, held its regular monthly meeting.

Since the next regular monthly meeting date falls on Mother's Day, we plan to have a special day with refreshments served after the meeting Sunday, May 14th.

Our upcoming attraction events include: May, 12 -- Mother's Day dance; music by Lee Roy Matocha May 14 Regular lodge meeting with special Mother's Day refreshments.

June 1.1 — Regular lodge meeting June 16 -- Dance; music by Lee Roy Matocha August 6 — Lodge annual fundraising supper.

Members wishing to make something to donate for our auction at the annual fund-raising supper, have four months to do so; August 6th is the date of this annual event.

Remember also that our June 16th dance with music by Lee Roy Matocha. Unless something else comes up, I will not write until July.

LODGE NO. 35, ELK

Dear Members and Friends: The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 35 was called to order April 9th by President Henry Breitkreutz, Sr. The pledge of allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Eddie Ray Banik.

President Breitkreutz asked the members to stand for a moment of silence in memory of Sister Frances Stuchly. Sympathy is extended to the family, May your loved one rest in peace.

President Breitkreutz welcomed our visitors: Mrs. Frank Girard, Bill Rauschuber, Cheryl Daniel, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Burney, and Hubby Frazier. We were glad to have them and hope they come back again.

Secretary Albert Banik was called on to read the minutes of the March meeting and these were approved. He then read a thankyou note from Inez Zalman.

Treasurer Henry Breitkreutz, Jr.,

was called upon to give his report.

In the youth club report Sister Rosemarie Banik stated that the club had voted in a new slate of officers: President Julie Hand, Vice President Lana Steinke, Secretary Charlotte Banik, Treasurer Sondra Dietrich and Reporter Donis Wilson. Sister Rosemarie also talked about the YAD which will be held June 25th, at Lodge 84 in Dallas.

Lodge 35 will have a king and a queen -- Eddie Ray Banik and Jodie Wilson; also, Duke Richard Burney and Duchess Missy Steinke.

There was a skating party Friday, April 14th, while the youth club skated, the mothers quilted.

There was plenty of chips and dips for everyone.

The 1976 volleyball team finally got their trophy at the District III spring meeting, April 2, 1978. Charlotte Banik was there to accept it.

Sister Rosemarie then asked all the members who had birthdays in April to come forward. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Brothers Jim York, Richard Burney, Henry Breitkreutz, Jr., Sisters Lucy Holub, Robin Breitkreutz and Tracy Breitkreutz.

The committee reports were given. Helen Dulock, kitchen; Eugene Pavelka, entertainment; John Stuchly, refreshments. They thanked them.

New members accepted were Richard B. Daniel, Gerald L. Bolting, Kimberly K. Branch and Deborah J. Nors.

One paid-up member was Joe Pospisil.

The District III fall meeting will be held at Elk. It was voted to have it on Sept. 24th.

There will be another light installed at the parking lot.

There will be a Fourth of July Celebration.

On the sick list was Inez Zalman and Loyd Steinke. We hope you both are feeling better.

Refund checks were handed out.

Door prizes were given away.

Winners were Adolph Beralek, adult, Rabin Breitkreutz, youth.

After the meeting we enjoyed a fried chicken dinner and music by the Country-Fled.

Members, mark May 7th on your calendar for our next lodge meeting. The time will be 2 p.m.

Be sure to attend because there is always plenty of food and drinks

plus entertainment for young and old.

Dear Members, I am running behind in getting this to the Vestnik and it will probably appear the day of our meeting. I will have to do a better job from now on. I imagine by now everyone has their gardens planted and we will be waiting to eat all the fresh vegetables. We are already eating onions, radishes and spinach. We could use some rain, although the weeds are not suffering and that means a lot of chopping.

We had 24 members present at our April meeting and guests included: Benny and Mary Pavey, Mrs. Toni Reed and Mrs. C. B. Powell.

A get-well card was sent to Frances Tirk and sympathy card to Sunshine Easley.

Acknowledgement cards were read from Sunshine Easley; and the family of Eugene Laverty; he was the brother of Rosemary Gribble.

It was discussed about the Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92 and the Friendship Club being hosts for the Cesky Krouzek group from Sokol Dallas, on the 2nd, Thursday in July. Details will be discusser; further at our next meeting on May 3rd.

Hostesses will be Eva Dockery and Mary Ann Krivanek.

Birthdays for April were Alene Kercho, Margaret Langer and Gertrude Johnston.

Bernadette Tesar became the bride of David Holford April 15th at St. Thomas Catholic Church followed by a dinner and dance at National Hall.

They will live in Fort Worth.

Parents are Frank and Marie Tesar and Robert and Helen Holford also of Fort Worth. If some of you do not know Bernadette, she is the daughter of our president, Marie Tesar and also my sister.

We wish them many years of happiness.

I hope to see all of you May 3rd at 10:30 a.m.

MINUTES OF THE DISTRICT VI MEETING The District VI spring meeting was called to order by President Joe Nezval at 1 p.m. March 12, 1978 at the El Campo Community Center with Lodge 50, El Campo, and Lodge 151, Wharton, hosting.

District Flagbearers Kim Vanek and Leeann Shimek presented the flag and led the pledge to the flag.

A welcome to all those attending was extended by host presidents, Rita Vanek of Lodge 50 and Charlie Buyek of Lodge 151.

There was a brief- moment of silence in tribute to our departed members.

Assistant Youth Counselor PaulMe Kalina did not respond to officers' roll call and ten lodges answered the roll call of lodges.

District VI First Vice President Adolf Motal introduced the Supreme Lodge Legal Adviser Hetiben Lesikar and his wife. District VI Director Matt Vanek, and Rest Homes Director Erwin Holy. Ms. Edna Urbanec from District V was the only guest present.

The minutes were read and approved.

The list of the 50-year members was read.

Letters were read from SL Prestdent Nick Morris, SL Secretarytreasurer, Leonard Mikeska„ SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr., and Editor Rudy Sefcik; all expressed regrets for not being able to attend the meeting due to prior commitments.

District VI Treasurer Anton Kellner gave his financial report: October 23, 1977, there was a balance of $1,797.16. There was no income, and the expenses totaled $83.86; leaving a balance of $1,713.30. There was a balance of $185 in the General IScpense Fund with expenses of $125, leaving a balance of $60, as of March 1st.

Elsie Brdecka, District VI youth counselor, presented the youth program. Leeann Shimek of Lodge 50 acted as MC. The El Campo Youth Club sang two songs: "Where Oh Where" and "Spaghetti Song." frallettsville Youth Club had Laurie Chudej play "You Light Up My Life" on the piano and several poems were read followed by a song.

A short break followed the youth program.

He welcomed all guests and thanked Lodges 50 and 151 for hosting the meeting. In 1977 over $20 million worth of insurance was sold over the state. Three sales representatives from each district had at-

tended a three-day insurance sales seminar in Temple. Four sales representatives in the state sold over $1, million in insurance in 1977.

There was over $1. million of real estate loans on the books. Money was available for loans at 9 percent interest. The questionnaire

that had been sent to each lodge should be completed and returned.

The SPJST assets are $24 million dollars. The refunds to lodges amounted to $136,847. The Vestnik subscriptions increased in 1977 koy 640 and 14,268 Vestniks go out every week. Over $500 postage is

All four ladies are from Lodge 25, Ennis. spent each week, with the publisher receiving $1,000 a week. Over $117 million amount of insurance is in force. A new lodge hall will be dedicated some time this summer in Corpus Christi. A workshop Ii to be

held March 18th in Hallettsville and Director Vanek urged everyone to attend. On May 21st, Lodge 32, Victoria, is going to have a barbecue dinner and dance at Sun Valley;

Edwin Smajstrla, District VI sales representative, said insurance sales had 'been good in 1977 with total sales of $1,265,800 for 197 members. Top sales representatives in the district were Adolf Motel for $233,500 to 30 members; Frankie Vanek 185,000 to 18 members, and Matt Vanek $132,000 to 21 members. Adolf Metal was the top man in the state in the Pacesetter's Club. Also, placing in the Pacesetter's Club in District VI were Frankie Vanek, Matt Vanek, Annimae Merta, Jerome Hlavaty and James Bacak. Members in the Application-a-Month Club were Adolf Motal, Lottie Krutilek, Frankie Vanek and Matt Vanek. Brother Smajstrla asked all sales representatives to stand and 17 responded. There were 73 sales representatives in the district. Sales classes had been held in Hallettsville and Sales up to the time of the district meeting were $406,500 with the quota for 1978 being $1,050,000.

New sales representatives were Marie Sykora (58), Mary Jane Sralla (153), Joseph Nezval (28), and Anton Kellner (28). Carolyn Bucek, Melvin Marek, and Brother Smaistria attended a sales meeting in Temple. Brother Smajstrla also extended sympathies to the families of Paul Sablatura and Mrs. Wm. Miculka.

Next on the agenda was District VI Youth Counselor Elsie Brdecka and her report. She stated that the youth clubs were rather quiet dur-

Wednesday, April 26, 1978 ing the winter but several important events were coming up: a district training class in Taiton, April 15th; a youth leaders' retreat at Val Verde, April 22-23; youth camp at Bastrop, June 19-22; District VI YAD at Hillje, July 16th; State YAD at Temple, August 20; and State Royalty contest at Seaton, Sept. 30th. She also stated that new rule books and scoring sheets were coming out and reminded everyone of their scrapbooks for competition. There were two new leaders at Victoria: Sandy Knute and Adele Donaldson.

District VI Rest Home Director Erwin Holy followed, reporting that the rest homes were doing extremely well. So far there was no trouble in filling requirements, but that the minimum wage increase had presented some problems.

Rates had to be increased to $655 a month. The homes were full and were in the hands of good administrators. April 16th will be the 20th anniversary of the Taylor Rest Home.

Legal Adviser Reuben Lesikar came with his report from the Supreme Lodge. He praised everyone's report and said District Director Vanek did a very good job of reporting the progress of the Society. There were resources of $23 million; 53,000 members for an excess of $117 million in force in insurance; and a 126 percent solvency ratio. He urged everyone to attend the workshop in HallettsvWe. Then Brother Lesikar said he had many inquiries as to what kind of protection should the lodges have. He said they should have proper hazard insurance, fire and flood insurance and also premises liability insurance for those with lodge halls. Every lodge should have automobile liability insurance. Youth program sponsoring activities should also have some form of coverage. Those lodges with employees should have workmen's compensation insurance. Legal Adviser Lesikar then gave a check to the District VI General Expense Fund for the amount of $250; the Youth Fund also received $1,455.75.

Under old business the subject of two district meetings a year was discussed. Sister Mary Mrnustik made a motion that we keep the two meetings but with one being a business meeting and one a social.

This was seconded by Sister Lot-

9 tie Krutilek. Erwin Holy said we need the two meetings so that we can have an opportunity to visit.

The motion by Sister Mary Mrnustik passed by a vote of 36 for, and 26 against, with 4 abstaining. So the fall meeting will be a social.

Under new business, Sister Vanek moved that the adults have a program at the social meeting. This was seconded by Sister Bernice Rek. This passed by a vote of 55 for and 6 opposed, with 8 abstaining.

The Nominating Committee, composed of Rita Vanek, Bernice Rek, and Charles Bucek, put the following names in nomination: Joe Nezval, president; Adolf Motal, 1st vice president; Frank Zabransky, 2nd vice president; Elaine Berkovsky, secretary; Anton Kellner, treasurer; Elsie Brdecka, district youth counselor; Pauline Kalina, assistant youth counselor; Kim Vanek and Leeann Shimek, flag bearers. Sister Ida Marth moved that the slate of officers submitted be elected and Emil Morris seconded it. The motion passed. Sister Lottie Krutilek nominated Erwin Holy to continue serving as S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director. Matt Vanek seconded the motion. Sister Mary Mrnustik moved that nominations cease and that Brother Holy be elected by acclamation with a second by Adolf Motal.

Brother Holy reminded everyone that this would only be effective for two years because he had already exceeded his previous term by a year. Brother Holy was elected.

Lodge No. 143 Inez will host the next District VT meeting with Lodge 32, Victoria, assisting.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Johnson were hosts and both have done a wonderful jab. They were dressed very nicely and showed an example to all who came that this is a respectable place for all ages to enjoy. We stress to everyone to come dressed in their nice clothes. We are really proud to have so many of you who are trying their best to care for the lodge: We were very fortunate to have so many fine youth leaders who had served so well, Alice Hafner, past youth leader, also Ann Lou Flasowski and now Mary Bean is really doing a great job. Mary, when I think about the big load of responsibility you have undertaken for the lodge, I don't believe any one could find anyone else who could do more for the lodge than you are doing; you are appreciated by everyone.

The dance Saturday .night, April 15th entertained a lively group of guests with the polkas and waltzes played by the famous Texas Dutchmen and a good vocalist. It is so nice to see our sisters on the entertainment committee always beautifully dressed and a smile on their lovely faces. The pledge of allegiance and lodge motto were recited by the members. In the roll call of officers all were present, except treasurer, Brother Robert Pavelka.

The March 19th minutes were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt and they were accepted as read.

In correspondence Sister Engelke read a letter from Lodge 79 Corpus Christi on the dedication of their new hall and the sizes and prices of advertisement brochure. It was voted by the members that Lodge 66 take a half page ad for $45.

We congratulate Lodge 79 and wish them the best of success.

A thank-you note was read from the Frank Kofnovec family for the many gifts they received from the members. They lost their home and all its contents in a recent fire.

We wish them the best of luck and hope they can move into their new home soon.

Sister Engelke read the minutes of the board of trustees' meeting held Monday, April 3rd.

Sister Sue Pauling reported on the entertainment activities. The committee had a called meeting Sunday, March 19th to select a new chairperson who is Sister Pauling, due to the resignation of Sister Annie Hanus. Sister Evelyn Cepak was elected to the committee, also. Sister Pauling stated that the committee planned to have some type of social at the May `meeting honorling the mothers.

There will be more details on this later.

The quarterly reports for January, February, and March, were made by Brother Frank Parma on the ticket office, Brother Emil Hanus on the bar, kitchen and hall

11 rental, Brother Frank Miller, Linden Hall financial secretary, gave a detailed overall report and Brother Ed Mazanec reported on the game nights. They were all detailed and good reports.

Sister Libbie Parma, reported on the youth club. Sisters Libbie Parma, Leona Nors and Barbara Stanislav attended the Youth Leaders' Class at Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood, March 25th. YAD will be Sunday, June 25th. Tina Urbanek will run for queen. Sister Parma had the trophy won by the youth club in 1976. The club went to the circus Friday night. They have donated to the Cancer Fund and Muscular Dystrophy. The club has been very successful with the kitchen on game nights which they operate twice a month. The club plans to have a program for mothers at the May meeting.

Brother Leon Hensel said all lodge books had been audited and are in order.

Sister Engelke also gave a financial report of her duties as financial secretary and gave out the refund checks.

For the Health Committee — Sister Agnes Mazanec had sent getwell cards to Brother Larry Sanches who was in Scott and White Hospital, to Brother Anton Mazanec who has been ill but is at home now, and to Sister Angeline West who was also in the hospital. It was good to see Sister West at the meeting Sunday.

It was reported the little granddaughter of Brother and Sister James Pavlicek is in the hospital; we hope she will be fine soon. Also, a letter was read from Sister Marie and Brother Joe Janecka; Sister Janecka is at home and doing fine.

We miss you both and hope you are both OK. Let us hear from you more often.

LODGE NO. 176, HOUSTON NORTHWEST Dear Members: John and I attended the meeting of Lodge 176 Monday night. We don't get to attend many meetings anymore since we have moved to Karnes County.

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by presiding officer, Sister Dorothy Blumrick.

Milton Trammell read the correspondence.

Financial Secretary Ruth Moore gave her report. We had one new application for membership, Zdenek Nedbalek.

Five members were present and one guest, District V Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska.

We learned that our past president, Brother Harry Schuhmann, had lost one of his brothers in a car accident recently; we are all very sorry to hear about that and all of us send our deepest sympathy.

Secretary - Treasurer Milton Trammell gave his very good report, as usual.

We drove from Karnes County to Houston to the meeting and if we can drive 196 miles to make the meeting and drive back home that night after the meeting, seems that other members from the Spring Branch area could make some of the meetings as well! Everyone should try to attend our next lodge meeting Monday, May 15th; we will have free hamburgers plus drinks for the members at 7:30 p.m. at Charlie's Hamburger Joint, 1651 Blalock. LODGE NO. 39, BRYAN Dear Members, Just a few lines to let you know about a few things going on in your lodge.

We had a very good meeting on the 13th of April. We had many things to discuss but things went nicely and we accomplished some pending business.

We set our annual clean-up day of our lodge hall and grounds for the Sunday of April 30th. We plan to start about 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Please bring wet mops and old rags.

In our May meeting we will set the day for our annual recreation day with a covered dish supper.

Please be at our next meeting to help plan for this day.

We also voted to sell six acres of our land and the deal is in process.

The final agreement will be made in our May meeting. If you are interested in this transaction please be at this meeting.

One of our lovely members was married on April 8th. She was Pauline Holubec, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Holubec, and mar ried to Gary Recek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Recek. We wish them the best of everything.

LODGE NO. 79, CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our new lodge home is progressing beautifully, Our members have started working on the interior.

Kostoryz Road which runs directly in front of the building, is complete with five lanes and sidewalks on either side.

Lodge No. 79 will host the District VII spring meeting, it will be held at Sokol Hall on Kostoryz Road. Registration is from 10 to 11 a.m. Lunch will be served. For fur-

ther information consult the meeting agenda in the Vestnik furnished by Brother Frank Veselka, District VII president. We shall welcome all District VII members and any visitors.

MINUTES OF THE DIST. II SPRING MEETING, 1978 The District II spring meeting was held April 9th, 1978, at Lodge 47, Seaton. District II President Monica Ivicic called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m.

Pledge of allegiance was led by the substitute flag bearer, since the regular elected flag bearers were not present.

A moment of silence was expressed for our deceased members.

Our district lost a total of 70 members last year.

A warm hearted welcome to Lodge 47, Seaton, was given by its president, Alfred Klusacek.

A youth program was presented with District II Youth Counselor Frank Klinkovsky as master of ceremonies. Clubs participating in the program were Elgin, Cyclone, Taylor, Seaton, Beyersville, Rockdale, and Granger.

A very fine variety of acts was presented from each youth club.

Roll call of officers showed that all officers were present, except the flag bearers.

The roll call of lodges showed that Seaton had the largest attendance with 78; Lodge 74, Lovelady, and Lodge 155, Austin, did not have any members present at our district meeting.

Minutes from the previous meeting were read by Secretary Mary Dubec.

Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris gave an interesting talk on our SPJST insurance gains. He also presented two checks to our treasurer, Brother Edwin Adamek.

One was for $250 for our General Expense Fund and $2,290.75 for 9,163 certificates. President Morris expressed his regrets at having to leave but he had another ob-

ligation to appear with the Seaton Brass Band.

The District II officers' reports were given next.

Treasurer Edwin Adamek reported a balance of $117.14 in the Youth Fund and $23.72 in the General Expense Fund.

District II Director Henry Vitek reported that we now have 53,981 certificates in force. He also stated that our district wrote 25 percent of all the SPJST insurance. Director Vitek then congratulated the District II officers.

Our sales representative, Lad Zatopek, informed us that, Lodge 74, Lovelady, had the most members with the largest amount of insurance being sold.

Rest Homes Director Howard Lesikar reported that our rest homes are in good shape, also they are being swamped with applications.

Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas sent his regrets that he couldn't attend our meeting.

The Auditing Committee consisting of Dan Balusek, Mary Zatopek, and E. J. Geistman reported that all the books were in proper order.

Vestnik Editor Rudy Sefcik introduced his wife, Maxine, and related to us that she did most of the work. He also asked everyone to mail in their reports early.

Otto Hanus, curator of the SPJST Library, Archives, and Museum, urged everyone to see the museum. He informed us that it now contains 1,400 items.

Recognition of our District II 50-year members was made, but none were present.

The District II fall meeting was scheduled to be held at Lodge 29, Taylor. Lodge 18 Elgin volunteered for the District II spring meeting.

Fraternally, Ima Ray Watson Reporter - SPJST LODGE NO. 79, CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Memibers and Readers, In February I received a letter and an invitation which read as follows: Mr. and Mrs. John Huber request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter, Nancy, to Bradley Eugene Smith, on Saturday, the eighth of April, Nineteen hundred and seventy-eight, at one o'clock pan. Chapel, Bergstrom Air Force Base. Reception and dance immediately following ceremony at Bergstrom NCO Club.

April 7th at 7:15 p.m. my son Johnny and his lovely wife, Elsie, arrived at my home to take me with them to the wedding the next day. We stayed overnight at their

MRS. BRADLEY E. SMITH summer resort near Austin. Their son Dennis, and his friend David, arrived a little later the same night.

Saturday morning about 11:30 we left the comfortable summer resort and drove to the chapel.

There we met my daughter Olga Mokry, my granddaughter Janet Markus, her son and my greatgrandson John T. Markus, all from Corpus Christi; also my daughter Lillie, her husband John Huber, their daughter Paula (my granddaughter) and Nancy, my granddaughter and the bride with her bridegroom, Bradley E. Smith, all of Austin. It was a pleasure for all of us to be together.

Then all of us walked inside the chapel and were welcomed by the two ushers, John Ed Thomas from Temple and Rick Sapp from Austin.

Paula Huber was maid of honor and there were three bridesmaids.

The best man was Mike Gutchmiller and there were also three groomsmen.

Minister Bob Taddlie performed the wedding ceremonies.

Organist and soloist was Mrs. Trudy Rea. Bruce Newlin, Harry Michael and John Huber were the photographers. The attendants had registered in the chapel.

After the wedding ceremony we went to the Bergstrom NCO Club for the reception and dance. It was big enough for one hundred people.

Cold drinks and snacks were served and for entertainment there was piano and electric organ music performed by a good musician for three hours. Then the bride and groom presented gifts to their attendants. After 5 p.m. they departed for their honeymoon to Walde (Garner State Park).

For me it was a great pleasure and honor to meet so many friendly people. Most of them were John Huber's friends: Mr. John Thomas and his lovely wife Karmel, their son John Ed and daughter, Mrs. Kibbie Sapp, all of Temple; they are members of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple. (Mrs. Karmel said they read my letters in the Vestnik).

Others attending included: Mr. and Mrs. Sheapart, their next door neighbors (a businessman), Mr. and Mrs. Pearson, professor at the University of Texas, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson, a lawyer, Mr. Harry Michael who is also a professional, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a city electrican, all of Austin, and Mr. Sam Householder and his fine wife Johanna, from Morgantown, West Virginia, plus many more who cared to express their friendship.

Olga, Janet and John T. Markus and I stayed overnight at Hubers and Johnny, Elsie, Dennis and his friend David drove to the summer resort. Then on Sunday, at 12:30 p.m. Olga, Janet, John T., David and I departed with the Hubers, and at 5 p.m. we got out of the car and walked inside the Sokol Hall in Corpus Christi for the Jerry E. Sijansky Day celebration.

Jerry E. Sijansky Day The gym program had just started. The performance, in my opinion, was delightful, especially the acrobatic number on the trampolin apparatus. It was the model part of the gymnastic program that will be performed at the dedication of the new home of SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi, Aug. 4, 5, and 6, 1978.

After these several numbers, Entertainment Committee Chariman Mack Munson called on me to address the audience. It was a pleasure and honor to express the appreciation to Bro. Jerry E. Sijansky for his efforts and faithful-

ness in our organizations: SPJST and Sokol. Once more, thanks to all, who attended the celebration of the Jerry E. Sijansky Day, April 9th, 1978.

I was notified by Sister Helen Pavelka that in the meeting held April 9th, our local Sokol Unit was enlarged by five new members.

Anton E. Elzner and his wife Annie M. Elzner. Anton was one of the charter members in 1929. Then later he married and dropped his membership because he was farming at Taft and the distance of 20 miles from Taft to Corpus Christi, the farm work and home work and the unpleasant night traveling to the gym classes, were the main reasons to give up his Sokol activities. Anton and his lovely wife, Annie, are members of our SPJST Lodge No. 79. Anton was a charter member of local Lodge No. 56; it was founded Oct. 27th, 1933.

Sister Annie is a member from Nov. 16th, 1953, and she is now a paidup member. I had the honor to meet them at our picnics and at some other occasions in the Sokol Hall.

Mr. Victor 0. Novosad and his lovely wife Pauline, are Sokol members for their whole life and they made a $1,000 donation to the Building Fund. They are also SPJST members (Lodge 79) with their two sons Lawrence and Allen. All donations will be reported to the Vestnik.

Mr. Eddie Knapek and his very active wife, Kristyna are known as loyal fraternalists in many local organizations. They made applications for membership and will be

initiated into our ranks in the next meeting, May 14th. It is my sincere wish to learn more news like this and it will be a pleasure for me to report them in the Vestnik.

The program ended with a social supper consisting of barbecued chicken with all the trimmings.

My daughter, Ann Peal, who worked in the kitchen, took me home at 7:30 p.m. The two days in Austin and at the Sokol Hall have been another wonderful page added to my heart.

When I welcomed Brother Jerry E. Sijansky's grandmother, Sister Agnes Jurica, she did not recognize me. She is one of the oldest local Sokol members, age nearly 90, and has been a widow for 40 years.

(They were both active members).

It was a long time since she attended our meetings and entertainment activities. This is always a pleasure for me to meet our members and especially the oldtimers.

Remember, the SPJST meeting and the Sokol meeting Sunday, May 14th.

Dear Readers, April 30th the annual barbecue of Lodge 17 will begin at 11 a.m. with the serving of dinner. There will be plenty of good beef, pork, chicken, and sausage with all the trimmings. The plates will be $2.50 for adult and $1.50 for children.

Meat will be sold by the pound at the barbecue pits. It will be

$3 per pound or $1.25 for half a chicken. Dinner will end at 1 p.m.

In the afternoon there will be a cake auction sponsored by the youth club. Throughout the day, tickets will be sold on a fishing rod and reel and a nice chest.

There will be games and public speaking coinciding with the Democratic primary on the state and local levels on May 6th, all candidates for office are asked to be present and to give their viewpoints. Also, throughout the day and night there will be plenty of cold drinks on hand. At night a dance will be held from 8 to 12 with music by Edwin Gaas and the Top Five: admission will be $2.50.

Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy themselves at the annual New Tabor barbecue April 30th at the New Tabor SPJST Hall, 4 miles east of Caldwell. See you there!

Dear Members, Our barbecue dinner and afternoon dance will be April 30th.

A barbecued chicken dinner will be served from 12 noon until about 2 p.m. The dance with George Orsak, playing old-time music, will begin at 4 p.m. A most cordial invitation is being extended to all lovers of old-time music, and especially all the neighboring lodges.

All you dancers from San Antonio, Hobson, Karnes City, Pleasanton, Jourdanton, New Braunfels, and all others are invited to attend.

The youth club will furnish the cakes and kolache for this barbecue dinner.

DYC Maxine Pavliska stated she is planning a District VII Youth Leaders' Training Class for possibly May 6th, which was suggested as the date. I understand the date was changed to May 21st.

Again, we are urging as many people as possible to attend the District VII spring meeting in Corpus Christi on May 7th.

Due to all the functions and holidays in May, our May meeting will be held Wednesday night, May 10th, at 8 p.m. All members are urged to attend.

The first Czech festival in Victoria has been set for Sunday, May 21, 1978 starting at 11 a.m.

The event will be held at Sun Valley, five miles north of Victoria on the Cuero Hwy. Dinner will be served starting at 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. consisting of barbecued beef and sausage, A kolache booth will be opened throughout the afternoon.

A battle dance will be held at 3 p.m., continuing to 9 p.m., with music by the Leo Majek Orchestra from Corpus Christi and the Vanek Polka Band of Victoria.

To paraphrase the Poet Edgar A. Guest, "They said it couldn't be done, and they did it!"

Thank you, Bro. Billingsley! Fellow members of the Supreme Lodge, officers and members of Lodge 178 Longview, friends and guests of honor, and those from other lodges and other districts and the public who have come here to share with us the joy of this occasion. It is indeed an honor and a privilege to be present on another occasion when one of our lodges dedicates their new lodge home. This is the first new lodge building to be dedicated this year, but it will be followed by the opening and dedication of four other lodge buildings in the remainder of 1978. It is also preceded by the most ambitious building program ever undertaken by local lodges in the SPJST over the relatively short period of less than a decade. This new lodge home, as all SPJST lodge homes, stands as a symbol to the will and determination and hard work on the part of the leadership and the members of any organization. We are immensely proud of you today, salute you, and share your joy and pride.

Before I relate to you some brief facts about Lodge 178 and how this building came to be, I would like to introduce and recognize the other members of the Supreme Lodge who are present here today and their spouses. (Please hold your applause until all of them have been intiroduced.) First of all, my wife, Dorothy; Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska; Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr., and his wife, Betty.

The lodge was officially organized

Lodge 178 President Eugene Hablinski and wife Clara. Clara is Entertainment Chairman for the lodge. This photo was taken in front of the fireplace in the members' club room. on the evening of Friday the 30th of August 1974, in the Hospitality Room of the Schlitz Brewery here in Longview. Local lodge officers were elected that same evening and the name "Pinewood Heritage" was selected as the name of the lodge. In the interim and shortly thereafter, lodge members and officers began looking at and discussing possible sites for a new lodge home. The Supreme Lodge president and District Director Pokladnik met with the members on the 4th of February 1975 and again on the 29th. of May 1977 to explain the details of such an undertaking.

The lodge was given its charter in official ceremonies at the Gregg County Fair Grounds on Saturday, 28, June 1975. Brother Hugo Kocian was elected president at that time, and Bob Stevenson was elected vice president. (I incorrectly stated Gene Hablinski was elected. My apologies to Bro. Stevenson). On 19 July 1976 Bro. Eugene Hablinski was elected president, succeeding Hugo Kocian.

Ground-breaking ceremonies for this new edifice took place on 21 August 1977 during a heavy downpour. (Those who were present will never forget this!) Construction officially started on the 4th

Lodge 178 Second Vice Prelddent Loye Alvis and wife Betty, holding their granddaughter Michelle Alvis. of August, 1977 and was completed in this the month of March, 1978.

The building measures 120 x 178.8 ft., with 20,400 inside square feet.

The seating capacity in this main ballroom is for 500 persons. The youth room with a small stage, is immediately to our rear and measures 25 x 45 feet. There is a large meeting and game room in another part of the building as I point straight ahead, a completely equipped modern kitchen, also as I point straight ahead, plus this spacious ballroom and this large stage. The contractor for the project was Abbott Williams Construction Company of Longview, with Mr. Loyd Neel as the construction superintendent. I would like to introduce Mr. Neel. Mr. Neel! Tom DeWitt performed all the legal work involved for Lodge 178 and I should like to recognize him. Bro. DeWitt!

Supreme Lodge Legal Adviser Bro. Reuben Lesikar acted on behalf of the Supreme Lodge in doing all of the legal work for that end of the transaction. As is generally known, the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST provided most of the financing for this project.

It is always somewhat hazardous to list or call the names of people who performed certain chores and contributed toward the successful completion of this project, but I don't think anyone will be offended if I mention names like Bill Holland, Clifton Combs, and Ray Ourka, as being the prin-

cipal builders of the barbecue pit, which I understand is a one-of-akind structure. Many, many of the members in this lodge invested much of their personal time, energies, and financial resources in the project, not the least of whom were Gene and Clara Hablinski and Bill Billingsley who spent so much of their time at this site during the entire construction period.

I recall calling Bro. Hablinski's home on many occasions and their son Ronald told me that his father finishes his workshift at the plant at 3 o'clock, but they don't see him at home until 7 or 8 in the evening because he spends the balance of the time here at the site helping in any way that he can. The same goes for Sister Clara and many other people. Incidentally, the lodge officers will be introduced shortly by President Hablinski. It goes without saying that a number of people have practically taken up residence at this site for the past several months, both in good weather and bad, helping with the progress of the construction.

A word about the new membership: This can be attributed to the hard working sales representatives of Lodge 178, namely, Brothers Hugo Kocian, Gene Hablinski, and Les Wiesner, Bernard Budnick, Bob Stevenson, and Sister Val Steele.

Brother Hugo Kocian has been the largest sales producer over these past few years. The lodge membership presently stands • at 273 certificates.

When one of our affiliated lodges successfully completes the construction of a new lodge home it marks an historic milestone in that lodge's history, as it well should.

In other instances where this has happened, it has also marked the beginning of an extended period of growth in the local organization.

It is a known and indisputable fact that those lodges having nice or new lodge facilities have experienced the largest growth rate over the years. We feel that the advantages and privileges that this new facility will afford both this lodge and the surrounding community will provide the potential for sound and steady growth. You have a nice and growing membership with an enthusiastic youth organization and competent youth leader.

You have always involved young people in your activities. Nothing

17 fosters the family concept in this country like activities in which both parents and children participate and all of us are aware that the entire nation needs to return to and strengthen the basic social unit in this country — the family. The SPJST subscribes to and wholeheartedly supports this concept.

This building stands on a tract of land 10.19 acres in size, and the FM Road that it fronts on is FM 2087.

All along, it was felt that this facility will serve an important need in this community—primarily for SPJST Lodge 178, followed, to the needs of various organizations in this five-county area. In instances, where our lodges have integrated themselves with the activities of the surrounding community, they have always done well, because they are a part of the community and cannot be isolated like a remote island. I know that this is one of the main aims and purposes of the officers and members of this lodge, because they don't intend to become an isolated enterprise INsulated from the rest of the community. We know that the civic leaders of both KUgore and Longview and the businesses in these two cities have been very supportive of this project and will continue to be. The presence of one of the two distinguished mayors of these two cities and the state representative certainly attests to the mood of the area and the attitude of the community. (One of the mayors was unable to attend.)

Before I conclude my remarks, on behalf of the Supreme Lodge and the membership of Lodge 178, I wish to express our appreciation to all the news media that eithee published, aired, or televised the press release sent them recently about this event. Their cooperation has contributed immeasurably to the excitement and publicity that directly affected the attendance here today. This includes the editor of our official SPJST organ, VESTNIK, Bro. Rudy Sefcik.

The officers and members of Lodge 178 axe to be congratulated on completing this milestone in their fraternal existence. You have worked hard and you have worked long. Enjoy yourselves today. You have worked for this day; you have earned it, and you deserve it!

Billingsley then proceeded to introduce the following speakers): State Representative Jimmy Mankins: President Morris, members assembled and guests. I am sure the Supreme Lodge is very proud of the work that has gone on in Gregg County organizing and building the SPJST. This fraternal Society, since its beginning, has done an outstanding job in the fields of benevolence, humanity, and brotherhood. No other place in the world could this have been accomplished except in the United States.

I have been reading about your organization from the literature that your president has been sending me from the Home Office. For those of you who are not familiar with the purposes I would like to read them: ". . . to encourage individual and group social responsibility; to provide economic security and benevolent assistance to members, their families, and other needy persons; and to encourage and promote American patriotism and the study and retention of the Czech language, traditions, and cultural heritage, plus youth activities."

These purposes are commendable. From 1897 to 1978 you have grown to almost 54,000 members, with assets in excess of $24,000,000, and 130 lodges.

I salute you for organizing the Pinewood Heritage Lodge in this area and building this beautiful building --- and in only three and a half years! On behalf of Gregg County and Texas Legislative District No. 13, I welcome you and your fraternal organization into our area and wish you much success. Thank you.

District III Director Sid Pokladnik: Mr. Chairman, Supreme Lodge officers, my fellow directors of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, State Representative Jimmy Mankins, the Honorable Foster Bean, Mayor of Kilgore, State Field Manager Silas Smith, District Sales Representative Alvin Nesuda, distinguished guests, and my brothers and sisters: It is a great privilege and honor to be present on this occasion

when we gather in Longview for the grand opening ceremony of this beautiful new lodge home. Here in the "Piney Woods" of East Texas, this beautiful edifice will serve for many years to come as a center of family and fraternal life.

On an occasion such as this many thoughts and many members come to a person's mind, especially thoughts of our great heritage from the past. Many years before the turn of this century, your forefathers and mine migrated here and settled in many parts of this great state to make it their new homeland. Those of Czech heritage soon became acquainted with and many became members of the fraternal Society called the SPJST, or the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State. of Texas. The progress of this Society has been exciting.

Today there are 130 lodges with a membership of approximately 54,000 and over $115,000,000 worth of life insurance in force, with assets in excess of $24,000,000.

Today, our Society has expanded its fraternal services into many fields. Many of these services, such as our homes for the aged, our scholarship programs, our physical fitness support, our youth programs, and many other fraternal activities, are a daily routine statewide.

This beautiful fraternal home is an example of what can be accomplished through united effort and cooperation. There is nothing stronger than unity of purpose.

With unity of purpose the future of this lodge is assured. Your lodge is blessed with outstanding leadership in your president, Gene Hablinski, and his fellow officers.

You have a great team, fully supported by the committees of the lodge and the general membership.

Remember, this lodge home Pinewood Heritage No. 178 belongs to every member of the lodge and every m,emlber of the lodge is important. I was most impressed with your ceremonies today; you began your dedication, with the presentation of the flag of our country.

Permit me to say that your Society showed good judgment in the location of this lodge. Gregg County, Longview and Kilgore are enjoying a period of dynamic growth in population, business, industry, income and property values. I predict that your lodge will become one of the leaders of your Society in the State of Texas. I enjoyed reading the literature furnished me by Mr. Morris, the president of your Supreme Lodge. Your dedication to benevolence, humanity and brotherhood merit the approval of a civilized world. It would be a wonderful state of affairs if the principles of your Society could be offered to the good people of all countries. If this could be done, then we would be relieved of the burden of bankruptin g ourselves in maintaining armaments equal to our potential enemies.

You have a proud history. I congratulate you on the formation of this lodge and the erection of this fine building. It will be a most valuable asset to this entire area.

He paid special tribute to the Cheer Committee and to the attorney and lodge member, Bro. DeWitt. He paid special tribute to fund-raising committee chairman and co-chairman Val Steele and Bob Stevenson, respectively. He also paid special tribute to DSR Alvin Nestzda, SFM Silas Smith, the local lodge sales representatives, and added that two new ones have been added to the roster lately, Bro. Don QualLs and Sister Betty Alvis. He extended special thanks to Bill Holland, who donated all the steel in the barbecue pits; to Glenn Hughling, who donated a big smoke eater or breaker, Raymond Gurka and Cliff Combs, who are building the barbecue pits; to Loyd Neel, construction superintendent, and finally to Bill Billingsley, who has been closely associated with the building project and with Bro. Gene who he said has become "like a father to me these last few, weeks and months."

In conclusion, Brother Hablinski thanked everyone for coming and helping Lodge 178 celebrate their grand opening and dedication. It was the 12th annual singsong and variety program to honor Central Texas senior citizens.

"It started out with just a few people from Harvest House, but now it has grown to include people from all over the area," said Richard Green, chairman of Knights of Columbus committee that organized the appreciation day. He said a majority still come from the senior citizens center, but many now come from Cameron, Rosebud, Rogers, Belton and other nearby

communities.

Need an Outing Mrs. Adell McBride prepares meals for the elderly at a senior citizens center in Cameron. She said 10 members of the center heard about the program on the radio and decided to come. "I think it's beautiful. They (the elderly) need an outing. It gives them something to do besides sitting alone at their homes, many are widows," she commented.

Senior citizen Mrs. A. D. Taylor said she and her husband have regularly attended the festivities.

Group singing —",xn.erica the Beautiful" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" --- opened the show, but dancing dominated the program.

A group of senior citizens playing improvised instruments delighted the mostly female audience. Calling itself the Kitchen Kombo, the group has performed at nursing homes and before other audiences since 1967.

German Folk Dancing Children from Rosebud sang and danced, followed by authentic German folk dancing by the Cameron German Folk Dancers. Square dancers from Harvest House took to the floor prior to the highlight of the program, the Seaton Brass Band, under the direction of its organizer, Nick A. Morris.

The band was organized in the late spring of 1977 to perform at the July annual lorl r e pi; 'lie of the SPJST Lodge 47 in •.,. .en. The band stayed together and has since' appeared on local television,

at the first anniversary of the opening of Temple Mall, at the opening of the Cultural Activities Center in Temple among other places.

The members receive no fee for their performances, pointed out Bernie Gebala, who introduced the band to the audience. Gebala is host of the "Czech Melody Hour," which is aired Sundays on KTEM radio.

Gebala said the Seaton group is one of only three brass bands in Texas, a sharp contrast to what many of the elderly were used to in their youth when such bands were common. * * This program took place on Sunday, April 9th. Many SPJST members participated in this tribute to our senior citizens, both as performers and as visitors. Clarence and Wanona Sula led the grand march at 4 p.m. in which the Seaton Beseda Dancers also participated. Some of the members of the Seaton Brass Band are members of area SPJST lodges. The band numbers from about 25 to 30 musicians at any one performance and rehearsals are held once a month, usually in Seaton Star Hall, occas-

Tonally in Reuben Mikeska's Cyclone Corral in Cyclone. Temple businesses and individuals have been generous in their support of the band, namely, Harper-Talasek Funeral Home, Pearl Beer Distributing Co., Temple National Bank, Ed Heese, Alfred Klusacek, Lodge No. 47 president, and Nick Morris.

Most of the donations have been used to purchase new music stands, which are already in use, and additional music. The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, and the Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra, and the AF Band of the West have also lent music to expand the band's repertoire, the latter through the good offices of Master Sergeant Bernie Gebala, local AF Recruiter. Some of the members on the sponsoring KC Committee are members of the SPJST. MC Bernie ,Gebala is also an SPJST member. The Seaton Brass Band and Beseda Dancers were all proud to participate and perform in this tribute to the senior citizens, and the Temple K of G are to be commended for

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members and Friends: The youth club's meeting was held April 9th with a good attendance.

Our club members went to the West Rest Haven April 12th and had a program; they also brought refreshments.

Sunday, April 2nd most of our youth club youngsters attended the District III spring meeting at Lodge 92 in Fort Worth. We finally received our volleyball trophy for 1977. The youth club members are very proud of it.

At our meeting we had an Easter card contest; the winners were: 1st — Darrell Uptmor, 2nd -Denaria Perez, and 3rd — Lillian Perez. We also had a spool baskets contest by the youth. The winners were: 1st Delores Dobeeka, 2nd Theresa Dobecka, 3rd David Dobecka. The judges were Brother George Straten and Sister Pat Wachsmann. Thank you for judging for us.

The youth discussed going to the SPJST Museum in Temple and then going skating in Temple one Sunday in May. YAD will be at Lodge 84, Dallas June 25th and camp will be at Val Verde, July 25-28; so be thinking about your craft, talent and camp.

At our May 7th meeting we will have a Mother's Day program, a crazy hat contest, and Mother's Day card contest. I also would like for all the =I:h.:1's And grandmothers to model their fancy hats because it would be a lot of fun.

The birthday celebrants for April were Keith Hykel and Karen Kutcherousky. Theresa brought the cake, it was very pretty. Thank you, Theresa!

We have been working on craft for Mother's Day. Those of you who didn't make any craft, come soon, we are getting everything ready.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members, Our youth club meeting was called to order April 9th by President David Dobecka.

The minutes and roll call were read.

Correspondence were from the families of Mrs. Sophie Uptmor, Alvin Schuetz, Barton, and Edward Marek.

On April 12th we went to the West Rest Haven to entertain.

We had an election to determine who would be king and queen for our lodge. David Dobecka was chosen king and Denaria Perez will be our queen. Darrell Uptmor will serve as duke, and we haven't decided on the duchess.

Our next meeting will be May 7th and the youngsters will make hats that will be judged, also the mothers will do the same; there will be a Mother's Day card contest.

Birthdays for the month were celebrated for Keith Hykel and Karen Kutcherousky.

Door prizes were won by Eddie Hykel, Danaria Perez, Joyce Wachsinann, Lanette Hykel, Darrell Uptmor and Terry Hykel.

Funeral services were held March 22nd from the Smith Funeral Home, with burial in the Moulton City Cemetery.

Brother Albrecht was born in Moulton on Nov. 23rd, 1896.

It is hoped that you are following this thus far.

This has been on my mind since the SL reported it: as long as our Society can provide proof that our Society (SL and all individual lodges) are in existence for the moral, fraternal, etc., benefit of and/or for our membership, very likely the authorities will be satisfied, I sin sure. It must be proven that we exist to provide fraternal and sound life insurance for the security of our members, social, benevolent and fraternal activities and carry on traditional cherished petriol ic activities to make us better c it !eons. This effects all of us, all 130 ledges and our entire P.(eiiety.

Remember this: Our mortuary dues in our lodges and the SL are not taxable., however, there is a growing desire to tax anything else unless it can be proven it is used for the members' benefits. I hope you haven't stopped reading so far, because here is the "punch line." All of us enjoy those 'personal annual premium refunds on our mortuary dues paid each year and our lodges surely can use and do appreciate the refunds of 8% they are receiving for collecting the dues for the Supreme Lodge, locally, thus making ours a local lodge system, however, COULD WE EXPECT TO RECEIVE THESE REFUNDS IF THE SL HAD TO PAY THAT AMOUNT OR MORE FOR TAXES? And what would happen

23 to our solvency? Think about this personally and in your local lodge activities; it could and does effect all of us, each and everyone.

In conclusion, I hope you have read this as fraternally and broadmindedly as it was written., and that you will take this into consideration and keep up an active role in your lodge and the SPJST. feel it is better to have written this now instead of later, saying I could have told you so! So far we have been fortunate to have representatives who are also fraternalists like Uher, ;Ind Hubenaki, Patre a . Astin an 1 Poage 'etc':, in.
