It is rather amazing that so many of our members of other nationalities value our foundations of democratic appeal more than we of Czechoslovak extraction do!

Maybe we could take a lesson from them, don't you agree?

Here is a good example: For about 30-40 years we just set back (most of us) and disregarded much of what our parents had tried to convey to our younger generations and all of a sudden we find that there is a gap in the past we should know about and the present and now many are attempting to close that gap. It will take time; it cannot be done overnight!

Saturday, April 8th, was a time when your editor could really appreciate the results of the past few years of efforts put forth by certain devoted individuals and of our young people realizing that they could be good U.S. citizens, good Texans and, at the same time, enjoy their heritage, culture and language all at the same time.

To this writer it was indeed a pleasure to see so many of our younger set join in a spirited display of friendship, frivolity, enjoyment and, above all, a devotion to the democratic appeal of all human beings.

The one thing that was rather disappointing to yours truly was the

absence of representatives of our Czech - founded organizations at the meeting of GMAT in the morning and the program in the afternoon also.

To our knowledge those present included SPJST District VI Director Matt Vanek and from the news media were Nasinec, represented by Ms. Kubala, and SPJST Vestnik Editor Rudy J. Sefcik. Quite frankly, it was not as disappointing to me as it was to some of the students who were happy over the large turnout in the afternoon for their program, however, they did not overlook the fact that very few leaders of our Czech-founded organizations seemed interested in their venture.

The program was nice and interesting and after the program there was a time for a social gettogether.

Time was fleeting and it was time to make the return 170-mile trip to West and finish up the unfinished business with the Vestnik and then on to the District II meeting the next day, April 9th. * * The District II meeting Sunday was a nice fraternal affair and District II Secretary Mary Dubec will have the particulars in her minutes and report. Photos of both occasions are in this issue and so are some more pictures of the cast and participants of the Czech operetta, "Romance of a Beautiful Gypsy" to be , presented at Lodge No. 88, Houston, Sunday, April 23rd.

LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE

Dear Members: The SPJST Lodge 48 Beyersville held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, April 2nd at 3 p.m. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Howard Leshikar.

Sharon Beran led the members in the pledge of allegiance.

Ruth Wuensche gave her report on insurance collected and Sharon Beran gave her report on expenses and income for the general and insurance funds.

The first order of business was the May Fete scheduled for May 14th. It was decided that we have the evening meal catered. The coronation ceremonies will begin at 5 p.m. with supper immediately following. The grand march will begin at 7 p.m. with the Debonaries providing the music. Ellen Schmidt, our May Fete queen, will also represent our lodge at the Lodge 29 May Fete in Taylor.

Lad Zatopek, our District II sales representative, came to visit us.

His visit was very welcome and we hope he comes again soon.

Our next meeting has been changed to Monday, May 8th, also scheduled as a work night for the coming May Fete. The meeting is to begin at 6 p.m.

District H SR Lad Zatopek makes his report to the meeting.

District H Rest Homes Director Howard Lesikar made a very thorough report on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes to the membership.

LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

All officers were present, except our vice president, Brother Don Steinman, who along with Sister Rose and son Jody were in Lebanon, Ohio, helping his mother celebrate her 82nd birthday. May she have many more.

Brother Milan welcomed a visitor, Brad Durham, and also Sister Eddie Lee Powell, who hasn't attended for a long time.

He read a thank-you card from Sister Emma Dvorak and a letter from Lodge 79, Corpus Christi regarding their grand opening and ad book. He also gave a report an the District III meeting that was hosted by Lodge 92; we enjoyed it very much. The food was delicious and we visited with our brothers and sisters from different

lodges.

New members accepted were David Stephenson, Marie Cox, Tressie Jean Sanders and Ky Christopher Clevland.

Sister Mary Renfro announced that there would be a Lodge 154. sales representatives' meeting Monday, April 24th with Brother Alvin Nesuda. Check for the time.

Brother Emil and Sister Frances, along with their daughter, Melissa Mamula, of South Bend, Indiana, were here for a very brief visit.

They were in California to see their son, Mark, in a UCLA swim meet and went on to a meet in Austin.

Mark did very well. Congratulations!

We also wish a speedy recovery to Sister Anna Davis who is in the Haltom General Hospital.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were accepted as read.

An invitation to the dedication of the hall at Corpus Christi was read and a motion was made to donate $25 for an advertisement in their brochure.

Financial Secretary Allene Zwahr gave her report. Treasurer Corliss Vallet gave her report. The Special Fund report was given in detail by Gilbert Walzel. All reports were accepted as read.

Three new policies were issued.

A good report from the District V meeting was given by Herbert and Vlasta Nowotny and Charlie and Mary Matcek.

The wonkshop atHallettsville was attended by the lodge officers and they brought back some good information.

A motion was made to make our usual contributions to the Fire Department State School, and the March of Dimes.

A motion was made to accept Karen Sue Brady as our new sales representative for our lodge. A round of applause came as congratulations to her We welcome her back to Texas after her stay in England Sister Emily Kolaja recognized the following ladies who so faithfully gave of their time to quilt three beautiful quilts for the annual Czech Fest, Vlasta Nowotny, Matilda Slacalek, Winnefred Susan, Annie Horelica, Vlasta Hurta, Libby KolaJa, Milady McDonald, Ruby Kuban, Emily Kolaja, and Lillie Teykl.

Our thanks also go to Libby Kolaja, Vlasta Nowotny, and Emily Kolaja for piecing the quilt tops and to Emily Kolaja for letting us do the quilting at her home, however, we all enjoyed the good fellowship.

Brother Gilbert Walzel gave a report on our booth at the Czech Fest, which was a success as it has been before and he also read the upcoming activities scheduled for our hall for the next month.

The Audit Committee was to meet on April 13th at 7:30 p.m.

Seems like our president, Brother Charlie Matcek, always recognizes everyone for any deed they do and we forget to recognize him for the many extras he does. August Tey-

Fraternally, Lillie TeYkl Reporter - SPJST — LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends, Vitame vas. Are your gardens all seeded, your pot plants potted, and your flower beds aligned with row after row of intrepid little plants reaching for the sun and drinking in all available moisture? Those sore hands and knees, and stiff backs will be forgotten in time with the reward of a myriad of colorful blossoms bending in the breeze or a tasty platter of green beans and bright red tomatoes. Perhaps a few of those blossoms will embellish the officers' table at the May meeting. At our April meeting plastic flowers were utilized, but there was nothing artificial about the spirit of the order of business, discussions and decisions.

We had as guests, Rosemary and Dale Woods, who were taking notes on the part we play in Czech community life and culture to be used in preparing their thesis for class at NTU. We enjoyed seeing Esta Belle Hubenak; she has been absent for a number of meetings.

Several new applicants were accepted and all officers' reports were approved. Martha Durham told of the meeting that several of our members attended in Dallas to learn of plans and activities of the group that works at presenting Czech entertainment at the State Fair. We would like to know if, anyone is interested in forming a new I3eseda group, or if there are any children desiring to learn and enjoy other folk dances. If so, contact Martha. Statistics show'that dancing is becoming increasingly popular. It is enjoyable, it is good exercise and promotes fellowship.

Any age group may participate, young adults, adults, or children.

It "takes two to tango," but more are needed for a Czech Beseda.

Two sets of Lodge 92 grandpar ents had grandchildren receiving honors. Joe Dederichs, grandson of Al and Eleanor Svacik, and Bryan Robinette, grandson of Lillie and Mac McMillan were named outstanding altar boys in their respective parishes and were presented certificates and handsome medals.

Several members were reported to have been in hospitals and most are now at home. They were Gordon Hubenak for knee surgery and Jo Ann Hixson for emergency surgery. Sister Helen Zich was hospitalized with a broken hip but is doing much better and only a few days ago celebrated her 95th birthday. Others were Lucille Peacock, Franklin Chaloupka, and in Houston, Debbie Hubenak was entering a hospital there for tests. Steve Matusevich, is doing a good deed for a neighbor who fell and suffered painful bruises.

The event will be held at Sun Valley, five miles north of Victoria on the Cuero Hwy. Dinner will be served starting at 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. consisting of barbecued beef and sausage. A kolache booth will be opened throughout the afternoon.

A battle dance will be held at 3 p.m., continuing to 9 p.m., with music by the Leo Majek Orchestra from Corpus Christi and the Vanek Polka Band of Victoria.

Sunday, April 23rd in the Chandelier Ballroom at Lodge No. 88, Houston, for the performance of the Czech operetta, "The Romance of a Beautiful Gypsy."

Marian Kadlecek has appeared on the English stage before, but is considered a new corner to the Czech stage. A very capable actress, she takes the part of Barbora, a widow who makes a successful play on Culda.

John Zemko, as Bojko, a roaming gypsy, adds color to some dramatic scenes. He has been presented in a number of Czech plays since he became a member of the dramatic club.

Harriette Allison has devoted much time and experience to the club and dependable, as usual, she will prompt the cast.

Frank Sebe,k as Vaclav Vrbata, mayor of the town, commands with authority.

Tim Kostom is co-director of "Romanek Krasne Cikanky" and in charge of the stage and make-up.

Camp will be at Camp Val Verde July 25-28. Keith Hykel was the only youth having a birthday during April. Therese Dobecka brought the birthday cake.

her husband, Orlando, occupied the box office. Brother Jack Gower was busy on the floor and his wife, Lois, dressed in a black chiffon gown, greeted the guests at the door. The evening,was enjoyed by all present.

At Table 43, a combination of a birthday and wedding anniversary took place for Mr. Leui and Mrs. Anna Crawford. Present were 24 jolly people surrounding the happy couple. Leui and Anna were married April 9th, 1952 and were celebrating their 26th year of a happy marriage; to top it off, Anna's birthday is the same day. The table was loaded with lots of goodies.

Daughter Dolores, with her husband, Robert Kovar, and our members Emil and Emily Bily, and other close friends were on the spot to toast the nice honeymooners and wish them many more happy years.

Brother Franklin Bravenec, with a serious look on his face, did not let on that he also should celebrate, but his friends, Royal and Laura Warnasch, Ed and Agnes Miculka let the cat out of the bag and had his birthday announced off the stage; a happy birthday song rang out to Franklin's surprise, and the requested number was enjoyed by both Franklin and his spouse, Almeda.

A week ago Ed and Agnes Miculka with Joe and Della Miksch, ventured out to the race track at Delta Downs in Louisiana; they stayed in Orange, Texas, and drove across the border to make money and have fun (which they had). I have not heard how they fared on the financial side, but they usually and lucky. Anyway, they enjoyed the trip and good company.

A special party was given by three lovely sisters, Marceil Malak, Helen Hegwood and Wanda Kennedy for Arnold and Naomi Spencer, Friday, April 7th, in the spacious and beautiful home of Noel and Wanda Kennedy. About 40 invited guests enjoyed the delicious buffet and, of course, the girls' spouses, Bill, King, and Noel, were lavishly distributing the refreshments to the jolly guests toasting the happy couple. Everyone enjoyed the surroundings of the swimming pool with all the huge pot plants and hanging baskets on the patio. Wanda must have a green thumb to raise such beauti-

ful plants. It was a lovely party.

Wednesday, March 22, 1978, the OtleXa family increased be one member. My great granddaughter named Brenda Elaine, was born to proud parents, Pat and Sandy Segner and also made her four-yearold sister Angie very happy. Of course, the grandparents, Henry and Della Olexa, think the world of their three granddaughters, Angie, Jennifer and now Brenda. I think I am doing pretty well, having only two sons and now eight gnandchildren, five great-grand-children. I consider myself to be a very lucky individual with a family like that. To my friends, I want to tell you that I love my new surroundings and I am contented and happy. Thanks to all for being concerned, about my well-being.

Sister Anna Svestka, our Birthday Club member, is now living with her daughter, Hilda Krpec.

Sister Svestka, at one time, was very active in the Hlahol Dramatic Club, with her late husband, Anton Svestka. I am sure many of you remember the frequent performances on our stage by Anna and her late husband. Anna is confined to Plaza Del Oro Hospital since April 2nd, Room 316-B. She injured herself in a fall a month ago, but paid no attention to the slight pain. As time went on the injury developed into a serious problem and she had to be confined to undergo numerous tests which always is painful. When I talked to her Wednesday she had no news of the results or the solution of her problem. By now she will be at home and we hope she is feeling better.

Sister Sofie Cole, sister of Willie Powell, and sister-in-law of Anna Kilnar, is confined in Park Plaza Hospital, Room 575. Sofie was admitted Monday, April 3rd with a high temperature caused by an infection. Sofie had surgery about six months ago and, during the holidays, she had to have surgery again for the second time and spent quite a while in the hospital both times and this is the third time. Sofie is going through a rough time. We all wish you a speedy recovery.

Pauline Klesel was admitted to Heights Hospital Thursday, April 6th, after she fell and seriously injured her hip; now she is in traction and will have to spend some-

time in confinement. Pauline is the wife of Edward Klesel, one of the social night committee members who works with others from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. every Thursday. That is what I call devoted members.

Mrs. Rosie Neskorik of Schulenburg, was admitted to Heights Hospital and had a serious operation Friday, April 7th. Mrs. Rosie Neskorik is the mother of Willie Neskorik, a member of our board of trustees and also is on the social night committee. About five months ago Willie's father, Mr. Willie Neskorik, Sr., was in Heights Hospital undergoing surgery and now is doing fine and now his wife, Rosie, is in the same hospital under the care of Dr. McReynolds. Best wishes for good health to all of our ailing members and friends.

Fraternally, Frances Olexa - SPJST --LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: I want to make a correction. I had stated that we had the Social Combination provide music for our dancing fans on March 18th and I should have said Country Combinations. It was my mistake and •I want to apologize for the error.

We had American Sunrise April 8th to perform for our dancing fans; our attendance was fair.

There was plenty of room for everyone to enjoy themselves.

The financial secretary reported that some of the members are failing to pay their lodge dues. When you don't pay the lodge dues, even though you pay the premiums on your insurance, you don't have any lodge privileges and you have to be signed in as a guest, if you can find someone to sign you in as their guest for the lodge activities.

Also, you don't have any voice in any of the business affairs of the SPJST Society or lodge. Be sure to pay your dues.

We are saddened to have Mrs. Rose Lee Gilson leave us. She passed away recently and was laid to eternal rest. Rose Lee Gilson's maiden name was Omelina. Her first cousin, Annie Omelina, is a charter member of our Lodge No. 74, which was chartered in 1934.

Brother Emil Matula, treasurer of District VII, reported $382.24 in General Fund and $106.84 in Youth Fund.

Brother Bob Bayer welcomed all present but a special welcome to Brother and Sister Miculka of Lodge '133, a very enthusiastic couple who firmly believe in the SPJST Society and have both been active for over 50 years. Brother Bayer visited eight out of 12 lodges in the district. On Nov. 27th Lodge 185 would have their chartering; and he had met three times with them. (Rio Hondo, Taft, Skidmore and Robstown lodges weren't visited). He had also visited the summer camp at Idlewild; YAD, and two quarterly meetings of the Supreme cLodge. He also met with Lodges 161 and 168 membership to discuss the merging of the two lodges; ground-breaking at Corpus Christi Lodge 79; sales representatives' banquet, retreat at Bastrop; made six appraisals in Dist.

VII. He had traveled 5,000 miles since the last meeting.

Sister Tillie Valchar, District VII sales representative, expressed that she was glad to see all present.

She congratulated Brother Hrabal for being the winner of the trip to the Texas Fraternal Congress.

She said that to that date, $553,000 of Insurance had been sold to 117 members in the district. District VII hoped to exceed its quota and in 1978 the districts would receive increased quotas of 17 percent. In the Application-a-Month Club were: Frank C. Sacky, 188 months; Helen Pavelka, 135 months; Roy Hra.nicky, 33 months; and Polly Bayer, 23 months. Sales representatives present were Brothers Frank Veselka, James Kostelnik, Alfred Kalmus, and Bro. Smith; Sisters Polly Bayer, Maxine Pay -liska,Te'Vlchar,ioMzac, Helen Pavelka, Viola Cabla and Brother Emil Matula.

ported that the youth had a good year. There were 123 craft entries, 15 entries in talent and seven in royalty; $497.47 was awarded in prizes to the youth. Camp was held at Camp Idlewild Aug. 7-11; 60 youth, ten chaperones, and three cooks spent four nights and three days at a cost of $1,800. State YAD (craft and talent) was scheduled for Sept. 24th, in Elgin, and Royalty for Sept. 25th, in Temple.

While at camp, it was decided that the youth and chaperones would have a district outing; all went to Cascade Caverns on the Robstown Youth Club bus.

Brother Veselka, District VII president, gave a report on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes for Brother Eugene Hrncir, who was unable to attend. He reported that the waiting list is long.

The repairs will be made in the kitchens as required by HEW. Driveway at the Needville Rest Home needs repairing. County and City of Needville went to court to collect taxes. The case was won by the Rest Home; taxes were annulled, but the County and City of Needville may appeal the decision later.

Brother Bob Bayer reported on the Floresville Peanut Festival in which Lodge 107 Floresville was represented. He also stated that Brother and Sister Joseph Bayer are writing the history of Lodge 107, from 1907-1977.

Sales classes were set for Oct. 11th at Lodge 107, and Oct. 12th at Lodge 79.

The traveling plaque for the Youth Club of the Year was awarded to Floresville to keep for a year, until July 1978, at which time at YAD will be held.

Oct. 23rd there will be a battle dance in Corpus Christi, proceeds will be for the Lodge 79 Building Fund.

The meeting adjourned for lunch at 12 noon.

The meeting reconvened at 1 p.m.

Brother Jerry Mikulas, SL financial secretary, stated that it is a pleasure to attend this meeting.

This is my first year to serve the Society and it was a good year; he has been employed at the Supreme Lodge for 16 years and assisted Brothers Zabcik and UrbanovskY; the year 1977 indicates that it will be one of the best. He reported that

the cost of examining books in January, February, and March was $17,000, paid to the State Board of Insurance. The Supreme Lodge, in 1969, began sending premium refunds to members. The Society has good benefits and we have good insurance. There are 14,000 issues of the Vestnik mailed out weekly.

The mailing list is made up in Temple and then sent to West.

Brother Mikulas reported that Brother Hejny was to enter the hospital; Brother Reuben Lesikar was in the hospital at that time and doing well, and Brother Morris was visiting his brother, who was ill.

Brother Rudy Sefcik, editor of the Vestnik, greeted the gathering.

He spoke about the issuing of the Vestnik, stating that sometimes it is hard to put everything in an issue because the Society is growing and there was more correspondence. He said that he tries to please all of the membership.

The appointed Audit COmmittee gave its report. The books were found to be in order.

Brother Bob Bayer reported that the two Jaurdanton lodges will not merge.

Brother Matula, of the Publication Committee, said that a special meeting was held at the Supreme Lodge and Editor Sefcik was not allowed to attend the meeting.

The Publication Committee asked that the Supreme Lodge and Brother Sefcik meet each other half way in these matters.

The committee which was appointed in March 13, 1977, was to report at this meeting on the allocation of $250 per year from the SL that is placed in the district's expense fund; this sum is to be used to reimburse district officers, except the district youth counselor and assistant for travel and expenses while on official business within the district. This committee did not meet except by telephone conversation; therefore, a motion was made and carried that this be discussed at the next meeting.

Brother Dominic Netek urged the members to stop by at the SL and see the museum. It is very educational to see the items that were donated by members and friends.

Brother Frank Veselka reported on the construction of the new home of Lodge 79 Corpus Christi.

It was announced that Sister Connie Hrncir (117) RObstown, the daughter of Brother and Sister Eugene Hrneir, will be on CBS Sept.

23rd 1977, on the "Price Is Right" show. Connie was the big winner (Reported by Maxine Sefeik).

Visitors from Lodge 88, Houston, arrived and they were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Burl, Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Burl, Jr. At this time a very short youth program was presented. Catherine Kline of 117 Robstown (who was visiting her grandparents, the Edwin juricas, resides in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), sang "You Are My Sunshine." Carmen Mazac and Melinda Bohannan, both of Lodge 133, San Antonio, played several beautiful selections on their flutes.

It was a short program but enployed by all.

Meeting adjourned at 2:20 p.m.

Social followed with Czech singing by a group of members of Lodge 133, and many others joined them.

Dear Members, A detailed report by Youth Leader Polly Bayer on the youth club activities was given. The youth club will again furnish the cakes and kolache for our barbecue dinner and afternoon dance, April 30th. A barbecued chicken dinner will be served from 12 noon until about 2 p.m. The dance with George Orsak, playing old-time music, will begin at 4 p.m. A most cordial invitation is being extended to all lovers of old-time music, and especially all the neighboring lodges.

All you dancers from San Antonio, Hobson, Karnes City, Pleasanton, Jourdanton, New Braunfels, and all others are invited to attend.

Again, we are urging as many people as possible to attend the District VII spring meeting in Corpus Christi on May 7th.

Due to all the functions and holidays in May, our May meeting will be held Wednesday night, May 10th, at 8 p.m. All members are urged to attend.

We will have another dance on May 13th with music by The Blue Belles. They also play countrywestern music. I hope to see you at all our functions.

LODGE NO. 17, NEW TABOR

Dear Readers, April 30th the annual barbecue of Lodge 17 will begin at 11 a.m. with the serving of dinner. There will be plenty of good beef, pork, chicken, and sausage with all the trimmings. The plates will be $2.50 for adult and $1.50 for ehildren.

Meat will be sold by the pound at the barbecue pits. It will be $3 per pound or $1.25 for half a chicken. Dinner will end at 1 p.m.

In the afternoon there will be a cake auction sponsored by the youth club. Throughout the day, tickets will be sold on a fishing rod and reel and a nice chest.

There will be games and public speaking coinciding with the Democratic primary on the state and local levels on May 6th, all candidates for office are asked to be present and to give their viewpoints. Also throughout the day and night there will be plenty of cold drinks on hand.

At night a dance wil be held from 8 to 12 with music by Edwin Gass and the Top Five: admission will be $2.50.

Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy themselves at the annual New Tabor barbecue April 30th at the New Tabor SPJST Hall, 4 miles east of Caldwell. See you there!

FEATURES OFFICERS' WORKSHOPS

A SUCCESS AGAIN THIS YEAR Dear Members: The lodge officers' workshops conducted earlier this year were a success, with a larger attendance at two of them and a smaller attendance in one.

A total of 38 persons, including guests, registered for the Taylor workshops on March the 11th. A total of 71, including visitors, registered for the Hallettsville workshop on the 18th of March, and a total of 54 attended the workshops in Ennis on April the 1st. The attendance could have been better in one instance, but I am sure those who did not attend had good reasons for not being there. The food was, as usual, deliciously prepared and served by the ladies of the three host lodges — Lodge 4 in Hallettsville, Lodge 29 in Taylor, and Lodge 25 in Ennis. Our gratitude and appreciation go out to all the ladies involved at all three workshops.

We are indebted to the photographers whom we requested to take the pictures and the results are quite good. Brother Edwin Gallia took the pictures again this year at Hallettsville and forwarded them for publication to the Vestnik. A young man whose name I failed to get came to take the pictures for the Taylor Daily Frew., and those are being forwarded wit/ this report. Our thanks to Mr. H L. Farrell of the Taylor Daily Pres. for this nice gesture. Mrs. Flor Casebolt of the Ennis Daily New again graciously consented to coming out and taking the pictures of the various sections, plus the cooks in the kitchen, and those have already appeared in the Ennis Daily News. These will be forwarded as soon as they are received.

The Supreme Lodge and everyone concerned express their thanks and appreciation to the three lodges for hosting these workshops and for making available their facilities for this event. We could not have done it without their help and cooperation.

ANA ARTECONA Ana Artecona, 17, is the daughter of Mrs. Sarah J. Btakemper.

She is a junior at Ballinger High School and was sponsored by SPJST Lodge No. 49, as a contestant in the Rowena Lions Club queen contest. Among the nine contestants, she was chosen queen and will represent the Lions Club in Big Spring, at the district convention.

Ana has been a cheerleader for three years, on the annual staff "Business Edition 1977-78," Editor 1978-79, Junior Class Favorite, Harvest Queen, candidate for the Junior Class, FFA Secretary for two rears, FFA Sweetheart 1976-77, the 4-H Reporter, and played volleyball and basketball two years.

She is a pleasant person to talk to and has a big future.

DEDICATION OF NEW LODGE HOME IN CENTERVILLE NOW SET FOR SUNDAY, APRIL 30th After several unavoidable delays, mostly because of the bad weather, the final date for the dedication and grand opening of the new home of Lodge 188, "Deerest Lodge" in Centerville, has been set for Sunday, April 30th. Please disregard all previous announcements.

The new structure is located 1 mile north of the intersection of Hwys 75 and 7 in Centerville on Hwy. 75 North.

Activities will get under way with a meal served at 12 noon; barbecue with all the trimmings at $5 each.

Meal tickets will also include admission to the dance later in the afternoon.

Dedication ceremonies will commence with the clearing of the hall at 1:45 p.m., followed by outdoor flag-raising and pledge of allegiance by Mack Jackson and Stevens Smith at 2 p.m. Mack Jack3on is presiding officer for the afternoon festivities. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies will immediately follow, with the ribbon across the entrance being cut by Lodge 188 President A. M. Easterling, Jr., Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris, District I Director John Kubena.

The remainder of the dedication ceremonies will move inside, where the principal speakers will be President Nick Morris, State Representative Dan Kubiak, A. M. Easterling, Jr., and John Kubena.

There will be a drawing for a color TV during the afternoon, and a dance from 5 to 9 p.m. with music by Ed Jones and the Buck Shots from Corsicana. Admission to the dance only is $3 per person.

The building is 100 x 140 ft. in size with a total of 14,000 square feet. It contains a youth room 25 by 40 feet, and a dance floor with seating for approximately 600 persons with a large stage.

Golden Book of Donors. We would also like to find a small windmill to display in our museum and we still need one of the 14-tooth Vshaped harrows and a 5-shovel cultivator like those we used to pull with one horse or mule. We would also like to find one of the old Go-Devil cultivators that were very popular in the '20s to complete our farm display.

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO, 88, HOUSTON Dear Members: Once again we had an excellent attendance for our April meeting.

After the meeting we all went to Pipe Organ Pizza for our monthly social. Everyone enjoyed an afternoon of delicious food, games and lively organ music. A special thanks to all of the chaperones and to each of you for acting so nice on our outing. We are ,always proud to take you places when you behave so well.

Our next monthly meeting will be on Sunday, May 7th, due to the second Sunday being Mother's Day. Please try to attend because we will have election of officers.

If you cannot attend and would like to run for office let this be known, to one of the leaders by sending us a letter stating you will accept an office, if you are nominated.

Here's hoping every club in our district has made plans to be on the program at the spring meeting. This will be our first meeting in the new hall at Corpus Christi.

This really calls for us to do our part to support this great day for Corpus Christi Lodge No. 79.

The date is May 7th and a program will be held right after lunch. Everyone get busy.

Another event coming up soon for our district youth department is the Youth Leaders' Retreat at Val Verde on April 22-23. This is a real reward for our leaders, assistants and spouses. It is not only a great learning experience, but this is the place where you get to know people in the youth department from all over the state in a bers.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Readers, The Talton SPJST Youth Club met Sunday, April 2nd, at 2:30 p.m., at the Talton Community Center. President Clare Dorotik called the meeting to order. Roxanne Yockey led the pledge and Brenda Kresta said the prayer.

Everyone was reminded to be getting their talent and craft ready for YAD. Everyone was also reminded to bring articles to Goodwill once a month.

For a new project we are selling wedding cards. Everyone should sell the boxes they are given.

For our next meeting everyone who wants to should bring a poem for the Mother's Day program and a Mother's Day card to be judged for a contest. Also, bring a small bottle and some egg shells to the next meeting for craft.

At our forthcoming meeting we will have election of officers, so all of you should be thinking of what you want to run for. Everyone should remember, too, that active members should be elected.

We had a program entitled "Spring" Several members read poems. We played a game and the winners were Sherry Krpec and Sharon Yockey.

Door prize winners were Mrs. Kenneth Korenek, Mrs. W. J. Duckett and Mrs. Jerome Dorotik.

Our youth leader, Mrs. Jerome Dorotik, was then presented with a cake and gifts for her birthday from the youth club.

For craft everyone planted a plant in an empty carton. We had refreshments of cake and punch.

NO 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was held Sunday, April 2nd. There were 10 membets present.

LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Readers, The District III Youth Club meeting was held Sunday, April 2nd. The roll call of lodges revealed that a total of 27 youth members and 12 leaders were present.

The fall meeting minutes were read by David Dobecka and one correction was made.

A motion was made and passed to divide our treasury into two parts; this will be made up of a petty cash fund and a steady bank account.

We decided to give one of the

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes a record player as our charity project. Mr. Kansas will investigate the prices.

It was also decided to have a Summer activity for the youth club. The north and south coordinators will be in charge of plan -nigthsevnt.

The election of officers was also held. It was voted to re-nominate all of the officers by exclamation for the next year.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.

LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Members, The Hallettsville Youth Club held their monthly meeting March 4th. The meeting was celled to order by President Annie Zabransky.

We had our district youth counselor at the meeting. We met for a scrapbook meeting on March 11th, at 10' a.m. and also practice our program for the district meeting. For our booth we sold tickets on cakes. The people who baked the cakes were Helen Zak and Gaynelle Chudej. At our next meeting we will elect officers.

For our charity this month we will give $2.50 to the Heart Fund.

Because our president was not here on the second Sunday, our next meeting and Easter egg hunt were held April 2nd.

Camp will be at Bastrop on June 19-22, District YAD July 16th, and State YAD on August 20th.

The adult door prize was won by Hermina, Vasek. The youth door prize was won by Chris Chudej.

I hope everyone had a happy Easter.

who died March 20, 1978.

He was a lifetime resident of Houston. He was the owner and operator of Elroy's Cycle Parts Shop, and a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise Haba; daughters, Mrs. Tine, Covington, Gina Marie and Jeanete Ann Haba; sons, Elroy Jr.,and Louis William Haba; mother, Mrs. Stella Haba, all of Houston; a number of brothers, sisters, and other relatives.

Income and health, two major problems of the aged, influence whether old people are active or have a passive outlook on life.

About 42 percent of the old people with poor health and low income said their lives were completed and they were not seeking any more goals. Only 27 per cent of those with good health and adequate income said the same thing.

Attitudes about health also are important. A majority of old people see themselves as having fair health. A Harris poll shows less than one-fourth of old people think their health is a problem.

Health and income help determine how well old people handle other possible problems. Campbell found that men and women have different responses to negative and positive aspects of life. He says that generally for people in their 70s: —Poor health can be more of a

done now to change attitudes that hold back old people. Studies show they are not the frail, isolated, helpless group people imagine them to be. Most need only a little assistance, if any, in order to be active, independent and interested in life.

An old man in poor health may be unable to work so there would be no conflict —Renting a home can be a stress for women, possibly because it is often associated with the loss of a husband who provided for things such as housing; —Renting a home can be a positive factor for men, possible because they are free from maintenance problems; —Living alone can be a stress for women but living with others can be a stress for men.

When the new law goes into effect next year that pushes mandatory retirement back to age 70 for most people and as more of the population gets older, some stresses may be partially relieved. Mr. John Whitmire is the State Representative of District 82, which is located in Northwest Houston.

He is a graduate of Waltrip School and received a degree in Political Science from the ' University of Houston. John Whitmire is a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 88, which is located in his legislative district. Whitmire was first elected to the office of State Representative in 1972 at the age of twentytwo. In the 63rd session of the Legislature he served on the Appropriations Committee, the Labor Committee, and the Human Resources Committee. He also served in the Constitutional Convention on the .Executive Committee. Mr. Whitmire was re-elected in 1974, being unopposed in his campaign.

In the 64th session of the Legislature, he served on the Appropriations Committee and was the Vice-Chairman of the Business and Industry Committee. Representative Whitmire was unopposed in the 1976 November general election, He is now serving as Vice-

There is no excuse for anyone who likes homegrown vegetables to go without, says Sam Cotner, a Texas Agricultural Extension Service horticulturist.

For those without outdoor space, a "mini-garden" can be put on your windowsill, patio, balcony, rooftop, or almost anywhere the sun shines.

Mini-gardening, or growing vegetables in containers, offers an advantage to the backyard plot.

These little gardens can be moved to the sun, placed out in the rain without being flooded, and are almost resistant to soil insects, weeds and diseases, explains the horticulturist.

Vegetables that produce well in containers, flower beds and other limited space include tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, squash, herbs, leaf lettuce and green onions.

Mini-gardens can fit into trash cans, gallon cans, drums, washtubs and wooden boxes. Other containers commonly used are 8-to-10inch pots and 3-to 5-gallon cans.

For any container garden, good drainage is essential, emphasizes Cotner. To insure better water filtering, a lightweight "synthetic soil" obtained at the local nursery is sufficient.

Better results are obvious when healthy plants are transplanted instead of using packaged seeds.

But care must be used not to damage the tender roots during transplanting, says the specialist.

Cotner recommends a soluble fertilizer for container gardens to help prevent salt buildup and promote higher yields. Watering with a nutrient solution is generally necessary two or three times a week. But this will increase as plants mature.

Keeping a close check for insect and disease problems is important for a productive mini-garden, adds Cotner.
