It's often repeated: Where else could you find such fine young people than in the SPJST? * * The month of April — a month of 'boosts! April is a welcome month — the beginning of spring. April is the month when the fireside begins to lose its lure and the outdoors starts to grow attractive. Gardeners, even those who have not yet ventured out, are busy with plans and preparations, surrounded by gaily colored seed catalogs. This is the month women have emerged in their spring dresses and, as it were, give winter its final dismissal. On the whole, April is a time of transition, of ending and new beginning. But there's one activity which you have been enjoying through January to the present time, and which you will continue to enjoy because it will not have lost its fascination nor lessen the wealth of opportunities it provides. What are we referring to? Why, selling SPJST fraternal life insurance, of course! — SPJST —

JAN SCHROIF . . . as Petr HLAHOL DRAMATIC CLUB NOTES Lodge No. 88, Houston By Naomi K. Spencer This is to remind you of our presentation of "Romanek Krasne Cikanky," a Czech play which will be presented on the stage of the Chandelier Ballroom, Lodge 88, Houston, April 23rd. Dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m., and the curtain goes up at 2 p.m. to the strains of the overture. Jan Schroif, a natural comedian, now adapts himself to a more serious role as Peter. Karel and Rose Sicner are appearing as a team again. They lend a continental air to the "Romance of a Beautiful Gypsy." We are looking forward to a record crowd. The meeting will start at '7:30 p.m. and a covered dish social will follow the meeting. Fraternally, Lillian B. Mikulec SPJST — LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Members and Friends: Just a few lines this month. First of all, I'm sorry I had to miss the March meeting. It fell on Palm Sunday and my family was invited out for dinner and it was impossible to make it back in time for the meeting. I understand our lodge made two large payments on our hall this past month, bringing our debt down considerably. In behalf of this lodge, I would like to thank everyone who helped make this possible by various donations, free labor, and cheap labor, or any other way you might have helped. We also do appreciate the nice and large crowds that come out to our dances; this helps us and we are glad to have a nice hall for you to come to ands bring your family and friends. I would like to remind everyone that our annual SPJST Picnic is coming up soon — May 28th. Again, this will take a lot of planning and cooperation, so let's all volunteer, and pitch in and help make it a

huge success. Mark the date on your calendar and invite your friends to come Out and have an enjoyable day, May 28th. District I YAD will also be held at our lodge this year, on June 17th. Let's all come out and support those youngsters who have worked so hard to achieve these goals. Our next meeting will be held April 16th, at 2 p.m. We urge as many members as possible to attend this meeting and remember: visitors are always welcome! Fraternally, Magdalene. Iselt Reporter - SPJST LODGE NO. 188, CENTERVILLE Dear Members and Friends: Saturday night, April 1st, was no April Foal's joke. We had our first dance in our beautiful new lodge home. It was well attended and everyone surely had a good time. Music was furnished by the Rhythm Kings. Some of you probably did not know about the dance and we are sorry, but it was impossible to let everyone know on such short notice. We will continue to have a dance each Saturday night and there will be other activities coming up later. Skating will be each Sunday afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m.; price: $1.00 per session. Everyone must have his or her own skates. Mrs. Robert Gresham, Diane Oden, and

Wednesday, April 12, 1978 Fern and Robbie Robinson will be in charge of this event. For further information you may contact one of thein. Each Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. we will meet at the lodge to clean the building. As some of you are well aware, finances are short and we cannot afford the services of a custodian, at this time, Please, let's have some cooperation so that all the work does not fall on the faithful few. Our monthly meeting was held Sunday afternoon, April 2nd, at 2 p.m. Again, may I say, the faithful few attended. The youth club meets at this same time. Why not make it a family affair and everyone share in the work and fun. The financial secretary read the names of 17 new members. We are always happy to welcome new members. TID BITS FROM LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON

The Friday dance, March 31st, with the Texas Dutchmen and Saturday, April 1st, with the Ray Jurecka Orchestra was enjoyed by all present. I have not attended and I do not have the names of the hosting committees for the two

dances, but I am sure everything went well. For that weekend our Choral Club was invited to the three-day Czech Fest in Rosenberg, to perform on the program and so was our Concert Orchestra, directed by Brother Rudy Dybala and, of course, our group was directed by our leader, Brother Tim Kostom, and accompanied by Sister Naomi Spencer. The attendance at this relatively new Czech festival, this being the third year of its existence showed a very successful fu-

6 ture. The acres of land covered with parked cars and streams of them coming in off the highway was tremendous. At this festival I met Mrs. Sofia Dybala, the sisterin-law of Rudy Dybala, director of the Concert Orchestra of Lodge No. 88. Sofie conveyed greetings from Brother Frank and Sister Beira Mikes now living in Ganado, They retired years ago to be out of the hustle of the big city of Houston. While living in Houston they were regular supporters of all activities at the lodge and it is so nice of them to think of us. You miss us? We miss you too, and thanks for your greeting and thanks to Sofie for the message. Sister Annie Elzner, with husband, Joe, were enjoying Easter Sunday in a big way. Besides being Easter, with lots of colored eggs, Annie celebrated her birthday which was the next day, March 27th. She was entertained in the home of Noel and Wanda Kennedy, which was a regular family affair and enjoyed by all present. Happy birthday, Ann! Brother Louis Schenburn in Northwest Memorial Hospital underwent eye surgery Friday, March 31st, which was very successful and he will be leaving the hospital soon. Hopefully, when you read this he will be at home with his wife, Mary, who is taking care of him, and well on the way to recovery. Louis, take it slow and we hope to see you soon. Sister Sadie Frazier is confined in the Yale Hospital and we do hope Sadie is improving and will be with us in the Birthday Club soon. Sadie and her daughter, Sadie Barlow, are very attentive members of our Birthday Club, and assist in any way possible. Brbther Ed Zahnanek, Chairman of our board of trustees, spent a week in Northwest Memorial Hospital undergoing a complete check-up, which, of course, is an ordeal. Speaking to him Sunday at the Czech festival, he looked a little tired, but still had his humor. The nicest thing for Ed to be in the hospital was when he was admitted there were no vacancies in the regular ward, so he and another patient were placed in the baby ward. Can you imagine the attention they were getting? Ed had a big kick out of it and he &Mint remember being in the

Vt8TNfK baby ward when he was born, but he sure will remember it this time. (I understood there were no other babies there, just the two men patients.) Ed, good luck! The country folks, Seth and Ruth Duncan, were in town this week and were as cheerful as larks. Out in the country they have everything under control and their garden is showing improvement and will give them results very soon. Ruth just raved about the beauty of their country home site with the redbuds in red and purple blossoms mixed in with the white dogwood trees; it sounded just great All right, you two you have been out there a month, so it is time for you to come in and enjoy the folks around Table No. 8; remember, we are still here. How lucky can you be Kathy? Not only a new Ford car (a Granada) from her spouse, Mike Treffel, for her birthday and on top of that a flight to New Orleans from her son, the wrestler, Dusty Rose, to witness a match on March 25th, when he wrestled for the championship. Kathy, while there, was set to enjoy lots of parties and son, Dusty Rose, was planning to accompany his mother home to Houston for a visit. Mike was unable to leave to join in the excitement, but will enjoy their son's visit. Good luck! Fisherman Jerry Kolacny and Bessie again hit the jack pot at Lake Livingston. They were visiting friends Mr. and Mrs. Dave Sawyer for a week. They arrived on Monday, March 27th and for two days nothing happened, just throwing out the lines and pulling them back empty. Then their luck changed and for the following three days they caught fish galore. Crappie, white bass, black bass, and catfish, of which they have about 70 pounds of fillet. Their deep freeze is bulging and my mouth is watering just to think of all that good fresh fish. Oh well, Jerry has his own boat and motor and after the experience he had about two years ago he keeps that life jacket on while on the water; that taught him a lesson. What a fisherman. I know Bessie was hauling them in, too. Remember the date, April 23rd, 1978, at 2 p.m. the curtain will open on the performance of the beautiful operetta, "Romance of

a Beautiful Gypsy." You may enjoy a delicious dinner, then the play, and a free dance from 5 to 9 p.m. We will be looking for you. Thanks. Fraternally, Frances Olexa SPJST —

LODGE NO. 173, GALVESTON Dear Members and Friends: I want to thank all who helped with the District V meeting which was held recently. We had a lot of help and everything turned out real nice. I want to especially thank the members of Lodge 88 and officers who helped us plan this meeting, also the ladies for the pastry donations from all lodges. It makes you feel real good to know others care about what is going on down here. The chefs for the day made a delicious meal and the barbecue couldn't have been any better. Brother Jerry Kaluza prepared the barbecue and his helpers were Brother Willie Huepers, Brother Joe Wytovak and Pete Kotlarich and Babe Polombo (non-members). There was such a variety of pastry and so much of it. The ladies really turned out their best. Ou# ladies always stand ready to bake when they are needed. We are never let down when pastry is needed. Even though we didn't have a large crowd for the dance, the music was wonderful. I have never heard Clarence Baca play so well. He had better hold on to his singer because he is a good one. They played a variety of music, polkas, waltzes, and country, and western music. A wish for a speedy recovery goes to our members who are ill. Brother Adolf Dusek has been in the hospital in Temple and is now home recovering. Mary Cordray had splintered her ankle and is better. Mrs. Dockal, wife of Brother Neil Dockal, has been in the hospital and is home feeling much better. Mrs. Dockal is not a member of our lodge although her husband has been a member for a long time. Mrs. Dockal has been one of our faithful pastry bakers each time we have something going on. She bakes four and five cakes for each function we have. I received a call from her one day and she was in the hospital. She said she had cakes already baked, but the icing had to be put on them. You just can't find people like this anymore. I think we all owe her the biggest thanks of all. Thank you Mrs. Dockal; you are a dream. If only we had more people like you. It looks as though spring is now with us. The trees are blooming, the birds are singing, the roses are growing and most of all, we have sunshine. Beautiful sunshine is what our area is known for. Wednesday, April 12, 1978 Hodges gave a report on the maintenance of the lodge. The ground committee gave a report on some of the progress that had been made, and also what needs to be done. At this time I do not know when our next trustees' meeting will take place; it has been agreed by the members of the lodge that whatever the trustees decide that needs to be done in carrying out and supporting some of the civic donations throughout our community before our next regular meeting be taken care of. It was agreed by vote they would give the trustees authority to decide on such matters; otherwise by having quarterly meetings for all the members to vote on matters concerning the expenses is too long to wait for all to decide. It was agreed that any members can attend all of the trustees' meetings and guests are welcome to attend. If I will be notified by the president when our next trustees meeting will be held, then I will give you a report on the date and time. We are having good turnouts at our game nights every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Invite your friends and come to support the youth club. able occasion to get together to visit and relive past happenings and renew old acquaintances, plus making new ones. Little did Ben David or myself, the first co-managers and organizers of the first team at Lodge 84, dream that this team would still be in existence 25 years later, and hopefully for many more. We hope that Ben David, plus all the past players will be as excited as I am about this reunion. Mark this date and make plans to come to this event Saturday, May 20th. We have been quite busy practicing and playing practice games, also having entered a pre-season DSMA Tournament this spring. Following are the results from the tournament; we played four games and registered two wins before being eliminated. The tournament play began Saturday morning at Kiest Park in Dallas and our first game was at 9 a.m. against Air Hydraulics and we won by a score of 5 to 0, behind the 4-hit pitching of Lionel Schulz. He walked 2 batters and struck out 4 in an outstanding performance on the mound. Leading hitters were Galen Lindsey, our catcher, with a double and a single, Jerry Zabojnik with a double and a single, Mark Winkler had a single, Robert Weyman, a single, Don Lennox had a single as well as a sacrifice hit, and Lionel Schulz performed a sacrifice hit. By winning the first game, we played National Motor Club, the final winner of the tournament, at 12 noon and although we played a fine game, we lost by a score of 5 to 1 mostly due to wind-blown hits. Actually, all 5 runs scored by our opponent were unearned. Ralph Stauss, our • pitcher, hurled a very fine game allowing 6 hits, 4 walks and had one strikeout. Leading hitters were Galen Lindsey with 2 singles, Robert Weyman, a double, Roy Andrews with a single and a sacrifice hit, and Jeff Burton with a walk. Game No. 3 was played at 3 p.m.. and we beat the Eagles by a score of 2 to 1. Roy Andrews, our southpaw pitcher, was the winning pitcher allowing 2 hits, 5 walks and 3 strikeouts in an outstanding performance. Leading hitters were Jeff Burton,

Robert Weyman, Galen Lind-

12 sey and Steve McIver with single s a fties. Game No. 4 was played at 5:30 p.m. against Charlie's Team and we lost, 3 to 0, thus we were eliminated from the tournament. Lionel Schulz was the losing pitcher, although he did hurl a fine game, allowing 5 hits, 3 walks, and had 5 strikeouts. Hitters included Wiley Beesley with 2 singles and a base-on-balls, and Robert Weyman, a single. These being our first games this year, we actually played very good ball afield, although our hitting was weak, still we enjoyed the games and the 4th game was really lost due to fatigue because the guys were dead tired. We did prove to ourselves that we are capable of playing very competitive ball this season. The team has played three practice games against TWFC and we tied them 4 to 4, and beat them 3 to 2, and 6 to 5. Our regular season league games will begin Tuesday night, April 18th. We will also be playing in the Dallas Invitational ASA Tournament at Kiest Park in Dallas the weekend of April 21, 22, and 23. The annual softball team benefit dance will be Saturday, May 20th, with the very popular Jodie Mikula Band playing for our dance. We ask for your support because our funds are about depleted. HOELSCHER BUXHEMPER FAMILY REUNION I would like to call your attention to the Hoelscher-Buxkemper Family Reunion to be held in San Antonio, at the Downtown La Villita Assembly Hall, June 24 and 25th, 1978. This reunion is for the descendants of Anton and Mary Katherine Hoelscher, who arrived in Texas in 1846. The family is mostly German and Czech today. The most unusual fact about this family is that there are about 12,000 direct descendants mating up the family, most likely, the largest in the state. About 1,000 people are expected at the reunion. This reunion is held bi-annually and attendance has been as high as 2,200. The family committee, who oversees the reunions, is headquartered in Temple. Past reunions have been held in Corpus Christi, Temple, San Angelo, Westphalia,Frelsberg, etc. The third edition of the family book is being prepared with myself as compiler. We are also asked to make a Mother's Day card which will be judged at the meeting. For our next meeting everyone is asked to bring a bottle and some crushed egg shells for craft. Under old business we discussed our money-making project which is selling wedding cards; each family is asked to sell five boxes. We were also asked to bring clothes and items to Goodwill. Also, we were asked to start getting ready for YAD. Poems were read about spring by Brenda Kresta, Yvonne Kresta, Karen Kahanek, Michelle Srubar, Clare Dorotik, Sherry Krpec, and Roxann Yockey. Fraternally, Karen Kahanek (13) (4-5-78) Reporter - SPJST -LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE The youth club held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, April 2nd, at 3 p.m. in the SPJST Hall at Floresville. President John Bayer called the meeting to order. Darrell Trappe led us in the pledge of allegiance. Mark Purchis read the minutes of the last meeting and there were no corrections.

We would like to thank Mr. Herchback for getting us tickets for the Holiday-on-Ice. John Bayer adjourned the meeting. Fraternally, Cheryl Kolenda (4-5-78) Reporter - SPJST — LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Readers, The Robstown Youth Club members attended the annual Corpus Christi Sunrise Service March 26th; some of the members and their parents went by bus at 5:30 a.m. The services were held at the Cole Park by the waterfront, and started at 6 a.m. The inter-church council is composed of interested young people from different churches. This was the 35th annual Easter Sunrise Service. After the services, the youth members were invited to a breakfast at the Presbyterian Church. April 1st the youth club went on a trip to Lake Corpus Christi. The members left on the club bus at 1 p.m. All members were asked to bring $1 for the gas and the enterance price at the gate. Upon arriving at the park, the members were free to do as they pleased. Members swam in the lake which was very cold. After an hour of swimming, the members were treated to a fun-filled boat ride sponsored by one of the youth member's family, Mr. Kuenneke; he gave all the members and parents rides on his boat which all of us enjoyed. Supper was then held. Everyone brought their own sack lunches. The drinks were furnished by the club for the members. After our supper, we played games and had contests. A sack race was held with Margaret Herschbach, the winner. A tug-of-war was held which was a lot of fun. The most fun of all was the initiation of the new members, Shannon Hardcastie, Suzi Baker, Lisa Van Sickle, Bradley Van Sickle, Chris Van Sickle, Donald Marek, Mark McNamara, Angie Hindi*,

James Baker, Doug Barnes,and

Margaret Herschbac,h. These new members were initiated in various ways. One member went to the end of the pier and yelled, "Here, fishy, fishy," three times which was quite funny. Other members had to walk in a circle three times with two oranges between their legs, plus other various initiations were held. After all the initiations, an egg throwing contest was held. Raw eggs were given to members who were in couples. The members threw the eggs back and fourth until the egg was broken or dropped. The winners were Pam Steiger and James Baker. This ended our fun-filled trip to the lake. Our next monthly meeting will be held April 15th at 2 p.m., at the Jackson Woods Scout Hut. Fraternally, Frances McDonald (14) (4-6-78) Reporter - SPJST — LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members, The meeting was called to order by President Greg Hutyra at 7 p.m. We recited the pledge of allegiance to the flag.
