Across the Desk I Wish . . .

When you're lonely I wish you love When you're down I wish you joy When you're troubled I wish you peace When things are complicated I wish you simple beauty When things are chaotic I wish you inner silence When things look empty * * There are a number of events coming up in these first days of spring, 1978. The Third Annual Czech Fest will be going full blast at Rosenberg Fair Grounds March 31st through April 2nd. In our SPJST we will have the District III meeting Sunday, April 2nd, at Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth, and Districts I and II both have their meetings Sunday, April 9th, at Lodge No. 9, Snook, and Lodge No. 4'7, Seaton, respectively. Then on Sunday, April 16th the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its existence How time does fly! It seems that only a few weeks ago we delegates were discussing whether to build a rest home or not in the 1956 Convention in Temple! District IV and VII meetings are coming up in the future; check the Bulletin Board for dates and locations.

There are letters from Brother Calvin Chervenka and Mr. J. C. Ermis, Jr., president of the Czech Club at UT, Austin, in this issue and our readers are advised to read them. The one function we especially wish to call your attention to is the Annual Conference of Czech Students and Teachers of Texas to be held Saturday, April 8th, at Moravia, Texas.

Wednesday, March 29, 1978 propriate place for the conference and this editor encourages all interested persons to make an attempt to attend. Although It is on a busy Saturday, your editor will try to attend at least a part of the event, having received four requests to be present; it is gratifying to see our students at UT, U of Houston, TAMU and others showing much interest. In July, 1976, one director made the remark that this was not an SPJST affair, however, yours truly remembers that the second purpose for which our SPJST was founded was for the preservation and encouragement of the Czech language, culture, heritage, etc., and guides his purpose in life by these.

Certainly these events can only help and definitely not hurt our own future.

By Brother Chervenka's letter one can see that the Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) will meet at 10 a.m. for their meeting.

The other events pertaining to the free Czechoslovak Film Festival being planned at Temple Junior College April 16, 17, 18 and 19, and although well into the future (June, 1978) the coining of the famous puppet theater group DRAK, which has been invited by the Puppeteers of America will be available so please read the letter. Incidentally, DRAK means dragon in English, however, if used in reference to children's drak, it means paper kite.

There is rather thorough information in this issue and any of our groups who had good rewards with the BROLN, Lue'nica,, etc., groups should guide themselves according to Brother Chervenka's request and information. * * On our front page we have the picture of the members of our Insurance Department, directors and sales representatives who attended the three-day sales meeting at our Supreme Lodge, recently. The photo was submitted by Supreme Lodge Vice President Joe B. Hejny. * * We hope that all of our members and readers enjoyed the Easter Season in good health, safety and are looking to the future with a bright outlook, especially after the near record-breaking, harsh winters for the last two years!

NEWSBRIEFS August Ondrej, 83, of Penelope died Tuesday night, March 16th in a Hubbard hospital. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. at the Catholic Church of the Nativity, Penelope, with Rev. Jerry Mossman officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, West. Brother Ondrej was a member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood. * * Ground-Breaking at Lodge 180, Burleson Formal ground-breaking ceremonies for the new lodge home construction are set for 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 1st, at the building site on 1-35 West, just south of Burleson adjoining the city limits

of Burleson. Participating in the ceremonies from the Supreme Lodge will be SL President Nick Morris and District III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik, together with local lodge officers and local dignitaries. Lodge members and interested persons are invited to attend. a

REPORTS DISTRICT VI SALES REPRESENTATIVE'S REPORT (January and February, 1978 Sales) I am very glad to report that we have had a very good start for this year. Through February, our sales totaled $407,500 for 48 new members. I want to thank each sales representative for this very good work; it is very much appreciated and I hope you will keep up this good work. With your very good effort, and good luck, I know you will.

In January, our top sales representative was Brother Jerry Pierce of Lodge 187, of Yorktown, with $50,000 in insurance sales for one member. Our total sales were $173,000 for 21 members.

I attended class in Temple Feb. 24, 25, and 26. I feel that I have learned a lot. Our instructors were Mr. Chuck Gaines and Mr. Joe Cook of Lafayette, La. They stressed a very good point: life insurance was not designed to make you rich, but was designed to keep you from being poor. How true that is; but some people don't think of it in the proper way.

I am intending to attend the workshop in Hallettsville, March 18th. I attended last year, and learned a lot, such as how to be a better secretary. There is a class for each officer; our Supreme Lodge officers hold the classes and believe me they are fully capable, and it is to your benefit to be properly trained.

LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA We had a very interesting monthly meeting for March, how nice to see new and old members in attendance Margaret Jackson, where were you? Your name was pulled out of the pot and now the April pot will be $25 richer. Who will be the lucky one? You don't stand a chance if you are not there.

On behalf of our membership, I wish to extend our sympathy to members and families who have lost members of their family. At this time, may our sick list be very small and if anyone is ill, may they soon be up and about.

I had the misfortune of missing the District V spring meeting and also the officers' workshop, but I am hoping that I will soon be able to get back into the swing of things, because I miss not being able to join in our functions.

The Knights of Dixie were enjoyed by all. There was a great time had by those present that night. I know all will enjoy the Blumes. Congratulations to all who have anniversaries or birthdays in March. The members of our Entertainment Committee are working together and doing a great job.

At the April monthly meeting, April 12th, we are supposed to have District V Youth Counselor Richard Walburg and his assistant, Dan Berry with us. Dan is a member of Lodge 172. You members be sure to attend and bring the youth, I know you have neighbors with youths, bring them. Let's get our youth club in full swing, we have so much to offer the youth of Pasadena, and just have to let them know whereand how to get there.

Initiation of new members will be at the May meeting. If you have not been initiated or know of some member who hasn't, bring them along and join us. Sister Klechka always has some delicious (de-caloried) goodies at our meetings.

We have gotten off to a good start this year, so let's all work together and not be like the family in the article that Brother Rudy had in the Vestnik about altering the pants legs. How many of you members know what I mean?

By Naomi K. Spencer On Sunday afternoon, April 23rd, at 2 p.m., the Hlahol Dramatic Club will present a Czech play, entitled, "Romanek Krasny Cikanky" (The Romance of a Beautiful Gypsy).

When the Curtain goes up following the catchy and melodioui music, you will see the four actors pictured above, among the cast.

The Vestnik will carry pictures of the other members of the cast for the next two weeks, which we know will delight you.

- SPJST — HIGHLIGHTS OF FEBRUARY MEETING AT LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Jerry Ermis. Flag Bearer Mark Wahlberg posted the colors and led in the recitation of the pledge to the flag. The members stood in silent tribute to our departed member, Brother Edgar Wessely.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read with one correction Correspondence was acknowledged, followed by the reading of the applications for membership and a motion was made and seconded to accept such list as read.

Initiation of new members was administered by President Jerry Ermis and Vice President Tillie Helmcamp.

Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg reported on a successful chili supper sponsored by the youth, as well as a prosperous anniversary day with popcorn, ticket sales and tamale sales.

Monthly financial reports were reported by the various committee chairmen.

AMOg KADLECEK, a veteran of both the Czech and Ehgli3h stage, he takes the part of a comical musician, Ferda Barchanek. for the month of January. He also canvassed the membership regarding a workers' party, and a motion was made by Brother Louis Hanus and seconded by Brother Joe Miksch to have such a party and the motion carried.

Sister Marceil Malak made a motion on behalf of the Audit Comm. to accept the financial report as read. Motion was seconded by Brother Joe Fusig and carried.

Sister Naomi Spencer reported on behalf of the Dramatic Club that the Czech play, "Romance of Beautiful Gypsy" will be presented Sunday, April 23, 1978.

Choral Club Director Tim Kostorn informed the membership of a record album which the Choral Club will release in the near future and queried the membership regarding the use of Lodge 88's name on the cover of the album.

A motion was made by Sister Tillie Helmcamp, seconded by Sister Lillian Finn to authorize such use of the lodge's name and same carried.

Sister Lillian Finn reported on behalf of the Premium Refund Check Comm. that 37 checks had been issued at this meeting. The conference consists of a program beginning at 2 p.m. which is centered on the theme, "Noe Na Stare Morave" (A Night in Old Moravia), a social hour at 4 p.m., a barbecue dinner at 6 p.m. and a polka dance featuring the Johnnie Ondrusek Orchestra of Corpus Christi, from 8 to 12 p.m.

Tickets for the dinner and dance can be purchased separately or together in the hall on the day of the conference. The dinner will cost $2.25, and the dance $2.50 (combination ticket will be $4).

CZECHOSLOVAK PUPPET GROUP TO TOUR TEXAS Dear Members: The 14-member Czechoslovak puppet theatre group, DRAK, will be making an invited appearance at the Puppeteers of America 39th Annual Convention in Lubbock from June 25th through July 1st, 1978.

The Czechoslovak Embassy in Washington, D.C., has advised that the group will be available for performances in Texas Czech communities during the dates June 2224 and July 2-5.

CZECH CONCERT ORCHESTRA OF LODGE 88, HOUSTON Dear Members: On July 1st, 1897, a group of Czech pion;eers gathered in La Grange and organized the SPJST. (The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas), a fraternal benefit society dedicated to the preservation of the Czech heritage.

Lodge No. 88 was organized May 1, 1910, in Houston, and is now the largest of 129 lodges throughout the state of Texas with a membership of over 9,000.

The SPJST Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra is relatively a newcomer being organized in April of 1974, and, at the present time, has 35 dedicated musicians ranging in age from 12 to 70 years. It is a nonprofit concert orchestra and plays for SPJST functions, church festivals, senior citizen rest homes, Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas, the annual Czech Fest at Rosenberg, the annual Ethnic Origins Festival in Bellaire, and other such celebrations.

Some forthcoming appearances of the Orchestra will be as follows: Saturday, April 1, 2:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 2, at 3:`,,3 p..

3rd annual Czech Fest, Fort Bend County Fairgrounds, Building C, Hwy. 36, 3 miles south of Rosenberg.

Sunday, May, 7, 7 pin. in the gazebo, Bellaire Community Center, 7000 So. Rice St., Bellaire.

Many more appearances are scheduled including several concerts at the SPJST Lodge, 1435 Beall St., in Houston. Watch for announcements.

Incidently, the orchestra and the SPJST Lodge 88 Choral Group recorded an album of Czech songs and music recently. It will be released in the near future. I predict that it will sell like "hot kolache", so please don't let me down.

report for the Board of Trustees' meeting held Monday night, March 6th.

The Entertainment Committee report was made by Sister Annie Hanus. The committee gave a gift to the Frank Kofnovec family who lost their home, plus all the contents, in a recent fire. All donations received totaled $37.00.

There were other individuals who gave separate gifts. I wish to thank all of you who donated and helped on their project in any way.

Sister Libble Parma gave the youth club, report. The club had an Easter egg hunt for the children after the lodge meeting. The club is also working the kitchen two nights a month at game nights.

They are preparing their projects for YAD in June, making plans for camp and other activities. The club donated to the Easter Seal Drive. They are still collecting aluminum cans so help them if you have any items of aluminum for this is one way they raise money for their club fund.

Brother Ed Mazanec gave a report and recognized the workers who work on game nights which is proving to be very successful.

Health Committee — Sister Mazanec reported she had sent baby congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Rick Rodgers; the mother is the form,er Jeannie Hensel, daughter of Brother and Sister Leon Hensel.

Get-well cards were sent to Sister Marie Janecka who has been in the hospital. (Sister Janecka was the lodge Czech importer until they moved to the Rosenberg area).. We miss you, Sister Janecka, and we all wish you a speedy recovery. Also, to Brother Anton Mazanec, who is ill in a Waco hospital. We hope and pray that he is improving.

It was reported that Brother Larry Sanches has been in the hospital and will enter Scott and White Hospital for other treatments. Let us remember him in our prayers for a good recovery.

Sister Darlene Engelke has been ill with the flu. We hope she gets to feeling better soon. Perhaps with the sunshine and the warmer weather everyone will get to feeling better.

We wish to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. William Godsey, Jr., who were married Saturday night, March 18.

She is the former Tana Sue Kutni, daughter of Sister Clara Kutni and the late Brother John Kutni, who were loyal and dedicated members to the lodge.

A discussion was brought up on the membership pass cards which are used for them to come in on one Saturday night dance free.

These cards were for $2 admission and if the admission was $2.50, the member paid 50 cents extra to come in. Due to the bands going up on their fees, it was voted and passed to charge $2.50 per person to all Saturday night dances, beginning with the Saturday, March

The motion was made that the membership pass cards now are

$2.50 per person, thus making the cards a free pass card. This does not include admission to a dance when a band plays on corn mission. They will not be honored at these dances. Everyone pays pass

admission on commission bands except those members who are

working that night; also, the passes are not honored on New Year's Eve. Brother Otto Hanus read what he has compiled on the Lodge 66 history that will be presented to SL President Nick Morris for the SPJST History he is preparing.

It was very good and Brother Otto is to be commended for the excellent job he has done gathering this information.

She is Edwina Adamek, daughter of our lodge president, Brother Edwin and Sister Catherine Adamek. Our May Fete will be the first Sunday in May (the 7th).

Youth Leader Melvin Steger reported that 49 members, five new members, two visitors, and eight adults were present at the meeting. Mrs. Mildred Riethmeyer demonstrated her arts and crafts to the youth. Donna Steger will represent the youth club at the May Fete and her escort will be Troy Wade. Brother Steger said that the paper drive is still going on so please save your paper and call him if you have any paper to be picked up.

Celebrants were her husband, James; daughter, Celestine, and son-in-law, Ronnie Piwetz; her sister, Bessie and her husband, Jerry, a sister Josephine Burl, a nephew, Freddie Buri and his wife, Jo Ann, and of course, her sister, Della and her husband, Amos Kadlecek, at another table, came and joined them for a while, to extend their birthday wishes. The table was loaded with all kinds of goodies and a decorated cake in the center.

A full table, hosted by Sister Ruth Durham, had guests from Fisher, Louisiana, her sister, Viola, and her husband, Roske Carruth, who visited with Ruth for a week.

Ruth gave them a tour of our lodge and Thursday she had Viola enjoy our Thursday social and the Blue Room afterward. Viola and Roske were thrilled with our facilities and enjoyed the stay in Houston.

At the Saturday SPJST Officed Workshop I learned that Brother Gordon and Sister Margaret Hrabal, members of Lodge No. 185, are about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married March 31, 1928, in Fredrich, Oklahoma. They reared a family of two sons and one daughter and the three added to the family with 13 grandchildren, ages 10 to 26. Gordon and Margaret are especially proud of their only grandson (up to now); he is age 5. Wednesday, March 29, 1978 camp to this Workshop and really enjoyed it. The whole session was informative with all the comments and interest shown by the present office-holding members. The time passed very quickly. If it would not have been for the distance many had to travel, I would have been in favor of prolonging the time, as some suggested, but the travel time is not favorable. In the few hours spent much was said and learned. The two lecturers were Supreme Lodge President Brother Nick Morris and Legal Advisor Brother Reuben Lesikar, and they are interesting speakers. I am sure many members would have enjoyed and appreciated the various information given during that time. The ladies of Lodge No. 4 deserve a big hand and our thanks for the food they prepared and served.

Fraternally, Frances Olexa SPJST — LODGE NO, 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: We had the Social Combination to entertain for our dance and, as far as I could see, everyone had a good time and enjoyed their performance.

Brother Lenard Hamlen and his wife did a fine job seeing to it that all the guests, members, and all our friends registered properly.

Also as usual, the refreshment department being under Brother Jerry Michka's aupervision, is being operated in good order.

All of you who enjoy the lodge and have not been coming to help out the officers in any way have no one to blame but yourself if something just doesn't go right.

Come to the meetings; just by your coming will make the officers feel better and your lodge will prosper even more.

Mildred and I attended the District II Sales Representatives' Banquet at Cyclone Lodge 24, March 19th. We really had a good time in the true fraternal spirit of love and brotherhood, reflected by all who were present. Brother Lad Zatopek and his family did a wonderful job in preparing the best food and even the President of the United States could not ask for any better. The table was really decorated beautifully. Thanks very much for a job well done, Lad. I think the world of you, your wife,

13 and son; you are always so understanding and anxious to help someone and not hurt anyone's feelings at any time. I have always said and I find it to be true: that anytime someone is pitching mud in someone's face, it usually bounces back to them in even greater volume!

Don't forget our regular quarterly meeting scheduled for Sunday, April 2nd, at 2 p.m. After the meeting a covered dish supper will be served, so any of you may bring whatever you wish. The rest of the evening will be for everyone who wants to come and play, sing, skate or just plain visit with each other.

Remember, we now have game night every Tuesday night; time 7:30 p.m. Members, those of you who read this report, tell your friends about it. All proceeds go to the youth club.

We were pleased to have Alvin and Wilma Nesuda with us as our guests. Brother Nesuda will be conducting a class for us on inheritance tax and estate planning April 20th, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Ann's. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The purchase of our land has been finalized and, if you haven't been by the building site lately, things are shaping up. The cleanup crews and machinery have really been busy and actual construction should •commence soon. A date of August 26th has been set for our formal dedication.

Considerable time was spent reviewing our proposed Rules and Regulations and we have approved two readings after revisions were made. The final reading will be at our April meeting. We commend the committee for the time and energy spent preparing these Rules and Regulations for our lodge.

We welcome new members Ernest Mack Cathoy, Karen Ann Cathey, Kristen Ann Cathey, and Ernest Mack Cathey, Jr.

Our next meeting will be April 6th at 7:30 p.m. at St. Ann's. The youth club meeting will be at 6:45 prior to the mother lodge meeting.

Our ground-breaking ceremony is still set for April 1st at 4 p.m.

Fraternally, Ann Luquette Reporter SPJST — LODGE NO. 79, CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Brothers and Sisters: I come to you with a few lines in the English section of the official SPJST organ, the Vestnik. I have never before written so many letters, both in Czech and English, to the Vestnik as I have these last few years.

The reason is that our members will accept election as a reporter, but that is all; they are not steady in their reporting. I have noticed where some active lodges have several reporters who are busy keeping the membership informed of what is going on in their meetings. Since local Lodge No. 79 and Sokol have elected their reporters, I do not feel I should make those reports for them. It is my duty to fulfill what I accepted to do as an elected servant and so shall be expected from all participants.

Our Lodge 79 has, at the present time, over one thousand certificates, and the Sokol unit over one hundred members. It is a pleasure to have all of them in our record

In the meeting that was held March 5th it was reported that the Grand Opening of the new SPJST Lodge 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi

home will be held August 4th, 5th, and 6th, as ceremonial days. The construction work was delayed by the bad weather. When it is completed it will be one structure that we all shall be proud of.

At the present time most of the work is being done inside. The size of the building contains 18,400 square feet; it is fireproof and also storm proof. 'DRAB' IS COMING TO TEXAS! The Czechoslovak puppet theater group, DRAK, will be in Texas during parts of June and July, 1978.

The Czechoslovak Cultural Attache in Washington, D.C., Vladimir Solecky, called to advise officials at Temple Junior College that DRAK will be available for appearances and that they would like to visit some Czech communities in Texas before and after their invited appearance in Lubbock.

They are scheduled to appear at the Puppeteers of America 39th Annual Convention in Lubbock from June 25th to July 1st. This would leave them open for the Czech community engagements on June 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, and on July 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

Mr. Solecky has advised that they would be willing and anxious to perform in Czech community hails, universities, and on television. They would perform without a fee if the sponsoring person or group would provide the travel, meals, and lodging expense.

I am sure that the sponsors in most Czech communities would be willing to provide food and "ptit the people up" in their homes, as has been done on previous visits by other performing groups. This not only is an economical move but is usually highly enjoyable for both the host and the visiting guests.

In the absence of adequate private housing, of course, the group members would need to be put up in quality motels or hotels.

Because we do not know their mode of travel, itinerary, or other details, we cannot estimate and prorate these costs. Consequently, I will suggest to Mr. Solecky that sponsors charge admission and give the gate receipts, less any out of

pocket expenses, to the group for their travel and other expenses.

When Mr. Solecky calls me, I will make sure that the arrangements will be acceptable to Mr. Solecky and the DRAK group.

I am sure that those of you who hosted such groups as Lucnica, Broln, and the Traditional Jazz Studio know that this type of cultural exchange is very much enjoyed by all, whether they be spectators, performers, or those who help with the work and cost of sponsorship.

The bride is a 1976 graduate of Reagan High School and is now attending San Jacinto Jr. College.

She works part-time for John L. Worth= Insurance. The groom is a 1973 graduate of Aldine High School and is now employed by Lowrance Machine Shop.

For a wedding trip to Colorado, the bride selected a soft green knit dress with black accessories and the groom wore a gray suit with a green shirt.

MR& FRANK VYTOPIL And judging by the handmade dresses that adorn dozens and dozens of small dolls around the living room of the Vytopil home in rural Bryan, Mrs. Vytopil's hands have been very busy of late.

Crocheting intricate dresses, panties and hats for the six-inch dolls that Mrs. Vytopil lovingly calls "my girls" has been a project that has brought her much joy, says her husband.

The dolls have also brought much joy to others—including the couple's six children, 19 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren, most of whom, including the men and boys in the family, are the proud possessors of at least one of the smiling dolls.

Mra Vytopil began her dollmaking hobby when her health forced her and her husband to retire from their farm in Robinson County and settle in Bryan. Her legs bother her, and make it difficult for her to be active, both she and her husband explain gently.

"But I just wasn't happy only sitting," she quickly adds. "I need something to do with myself."

So she called on a craft she had learned long ago as a farm girl: crocheting. "I used to do it all the time when I was a girl and in school. I first learned when I

12."

She's now 75, she relates, with a hint of pride. "So I've been crocheting for 63 years."

Although she's crocheted dresses, rugs, afghans, doilies and a variety of other projects in those 63 years, her favorite project now is the dresses for her dolls.

The doll dresses are made from a heavy weight thread, with enough bulk to retain the shape of the dress without wilting. A small crochet hook is used in a long double crochet stitch. The dresses have a lace-like quality.

In all, she estimates that she has crocheted well over 100 ensernbles (the dress, hat and panties). To make the three pieces take about three and one-half hours, she says.

While she has sold many of them and given away countless others, she emphasizes that she continues the project "Because I want something to do, something to keep my hands and my mind busy. I do it because it makes me happy."

The other things that bring her happiness, she says, are her husband (they've been married 57 years) and her family.

"Life is good when you're active," says Mrs. Vytopil.

NANCY KOCUREK . COULD BECOME THE BEST BASKETBALL PLAYER IN CORPUS CHRISTI

by Danny Douglas Sports Writer for the Corpus Christi Caller When Nancy Kocurek hoists her right hand high above a defender's head and looks toward playmaker Lari Rhyne for a pass, the odds are better than even that the Tuloso-Midway Cherokees are going to be two points richer.

Tuloso-Midway Coach Kelly Chadwick was hoping those odds would continue as his team makes its second consecutive bid for a state Class 3A basketball championship.

Kocurek, a 6-foot-tall sophomore forward, vividly recalls last year's state tournament, when Canyon played a rather cacophonous 8849 tune on 'r-M's head in the semifinals.

"I was scared to death," she remembers. "We couldn't control the ball, so they ended up controlling us."

While playing Carthage in T-M's first matter of business in Austin,

NANCY KOCUREK Kocurek readily admitted, "I'm looking forward to another chance at Canyon."

Kocurek herself has shown significant improvement during the latter part of this season.

Last year she played guard (Where her older sister, Linda, now starts). That, afforded her the dubious distinction of going one-onone with Canyon's super forward, Merry Johnson.

"There's no way you can stop her She can do everything," Kocurek marvelled.

Since the switch to forward this year, Kocurek is averaging 18.9 points per game. In District 15-3A play, her norm was 22.5. Those figures were impressive enough to earn her the Caller's Sophomore of the Year award.

While Kocurek admits there are certain things, like dribbling, she does not perform to perfection, she has proven herself virtually unstoppable at doing what she does best. And that's sinking an almost impeccable turn around jump shot.

The record shows that her finest, moments have occurred in pressure-packed games. In the two district meetings with West Oso, she was 21 of 32, 65.6 percent. And in the quarteranal game with Colum-

VESTN/K bia she went 10 for 16, 62.5 percent.

"If she keeps on improving like she has been, Nancy could be one of those 35- or 40-point per game girls," says Coach Chadwick, although he noted that T-M's balanced offense does not encourage a single high-scoring individual.

As she improves, Kocurek is learning that she is a marked person.

"The girl who was guarding me for Columbia kept telling me, 'Hey girl, I'm going to get you out of this game.' I didn't really say anything back to her, other than, 'Well, you just watch me stay in'," Kocurek laughed.

Coach Chadwick says Nancy really needs to be more aggressive.

"That may be my biggest problem here. I just don't have anyone with that rock 'em, sock 'em attitude."

Kocurek, who each day last summer rode her bicycle 3 1/2 miles to the gym for an hour of shooting practice, simply smiles when told that some coaches say she could become the best female basketball player ever from the city.

"I would like to be the best," she says. "I guess that might come with the more scoring techniques I learn and the more experience I get."

And state tournaments her first two years of high school are not bad experience to start with.

From The District Youth Counselors DISTRICT II YOUTH COUNSELOR Dear Members: Our next District II function will be our spring district meeting which will be held April 9th at Lodge No. 47, Seaton, and will begin at 1:30 p.m. At about 1:45 p.m. we will have a short youth program with each youth club having the opportunity to present a 10-minute

21 portion of this youth program, so we hope to see several short skits presented April 9th. Each youth club will also be allowed to bring two cakes, pies or other pastry which will be auctioned off after the adjournment of the business meeting. The results will go to the club who brought the pastries.

The youth club may also bring additional pastry items which each club may sell during break time.

The place for our 1978 District II YAD has been set so be sure to mark this date and place on your calendar. The YAD will be held at Lodge 177 in Academy, July 9th. We are happy to have Lodge 177 as our host lodge. I also had a phone call from Lodge 74 Lovelady saying they would be happy to host our 1978 YAD but, I had already spoken to some of the officers at Academy about having it there and we now have a confirmation from the members of Lodge 177, so it will be at Academy.

Thank you, Lodge 74, Lovelady, for offering us your fine facilities.

The District II youth leaders' and assistants' training class will be held May 8th at Lodge 47, Seaton, and will begin at 9:30 a.m. so make plans to be there.

It is hard to believe that it is almost April and we still have such cold weather. The planting of field crops and gardens will be late. The fruit trees are not blooming and it is now their time to bloom. Everyone seems to be ready for spring and some warm weather after a very long winter for this port of the country, but the robins have arrived, so get ready for spring; it will be here next week.

DISTRICT IV YOUTH COUNSELOR Dear Members: Our District IV Youth Leaders' Training Class was held March 7th, at Sister Mary Haisler's home in Seymour. Many good ideas were exchanged and contest rules for events of District IV were studied.

Contests at District IV meeting April 23rd at Rowena: 1) Each youth club to have a skit or number on program not to exceed 15 minutes.

2) Each youth club that has onehalf of their active members present.

3) Each youth club can have a booth of items for sale such as crafts, foods, canned goods, or anything that will sell. Each keeps the proceeds.

Special contests at YAD June 11th at McKenzie Park, Lubbock: 1) Youth Club that has the most entries 2) Five drawings of $2 each.

3) Sweepstakes winner (youth having most 1st places — Junior/ Senior) District IV youth will camp with District I at Val Verde.

Sister Massey carefully went over the youth rule book stopping and explaining all the new changes and stressed new ways of getting more members into the youth club. Everyone enjoyed the meeting and learned a lot.

Lodge Youth Leader LODGE NO. 177, ACADEMY Dear Readers, We had a very good meeting with lots of enthusiasm and everyone is getting ready for spring and wanting to do some fun activities outside, and I don't blame them.

For our social for this month, we will meet at the lodge at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 1st, for a fun day. This includes practice for our skit to be performed at the district meeting, going to the Bee Hive for hamburger and a coke and back to the lodge for outdoor games. Come one, come all and have a ball! Remember, bring all your costumes and all your items you will be using in the skit. Let's make our skit good and, without everyone's cooperation, we won't be able to.

The popcorn workers have done a great job. Without these faithful workers we wouldn't have any money to spend and have a good time. Remember, if you are scheduled to work, if something comes up and you are unable to work, please call me and I'll get someone else. I'm sorry I didn't get the work list sent in to the Vestnik in time for this month, so, if there are any questions as to when you work, please call me.

I attended the Leaders' Training Class at Longhorn Lab in Brownwood. We did many things, learned many things, saw old friends and met new ones. I wished all SPJST youth leaders were able to attend this lab; it was great for me and I know it would be great for them.

I want to thank the SPJST and the Supreme officers for making it possible for the youth leaders or assistant youth leaders to attend this lab. I would also like to thank Lodge No. 177, Academy, for paying Karen Lewandowski's expenses. She enjoyed this lab and learned many new ideas that will help our youth members.

The roll was called and there were 29 members and two guests present.

The treasurer's report was given at this time and the balance is all right.

Before our meeting started, Mr. Foerster played his guitar for the members. He played a few songs and some of the members sang along.

Wednesday, March 29, 1978 In the meeting new activities were discussed. April 1st we will be going to Lake Corpus Christi for a family outing. We will leave at 1 p.m. and return at 9 p.m. Everyone will bring a sack lunch and the drinks will be furnished by the adult lodge. All of us are looking forward to this event.

Another one of the more important activities is our trip to Astroworld on Memorial Day. Plans will be made at our next meeting for this trip.

The meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served. March birthdays were recognized and a party was held.

After the birthday party, the members went to see a movie and went out to a hamburger supper.

When we got back to the Scout Hut, everyone was glad to be home and they wanted to go and see another movie sometimes.

Funeral services were held at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brenham Monday at 10 a.m. by Father Floyd Biel, Father Ray Widacki and Father Billy Zientek officiated. Burial was in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery, at Brenham. The Memorial Oaks Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Max Majewski of Brenham, five sons, Raymond Mo.jewski of Victoria, David Majewski, Charles Majewski, Patrick Majewski, and Clarence Majewski, all of Brenham; one daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Florence) Koehne of Brenham; five grandsons; one granddaughter; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Bilski of Brenham; her father-in-law, Bruno Majewski of Chappell Hill, and three brothers, Alois Bilski, Julian Bilski, and Steve Bilski, all of Brenham.

One brother preceded her in death.

Her nephews served as pallbearers.

Born in Brenham Jan. 15, 1919, the daughter of Wallace and Veronica Murski Bilski, she was educated at St. Mary's School.

Mrs. Majewski was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brenham, a member of St. Mary's Ladies Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, the SPJST, and the KJZT. May she rest in peace.

Mrs. Haisler was born Jan. 30, 1892, in Burleson County in the Harmony Community. She was the daughter of the late Paul Mynar and Mary (Hoyack) Mynar.

Mrs. Haisler had lived in Burleson County all of her life. She was married to Henry M. Haisler, Nov. 14th, 1916, and they made their home in the Providence Community. She was a member of Caldwell Brethren Church. The Christian Sisters, SPJST Lodge No. 17, New Tabor, and the Mutual Aid Society.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 20th, 1978, in the Caldwell Brethren Church with the pastor, Rev. Henry E. Beseda, assisted by Rev. Orion Lewis, First United Methodist Church in Smithville, officiating.

A prayer service was held Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m., in the Phillips-Luckey chapel, led by Rev. Jack Mitchell, pastor of the Providence Baptist Church.
