In this issue are two items from our Secretany-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska; one consists of the minutes of the .January quarterly meeting of the Supreme Lodge and you are advised to read them carefully , and the other pertains to possible omissions in the list of 50—year and over members, and Brother Mikeska explains rather thoroughly what happens to cause such instances.

At a spring district meeting about two years ago a member came to me and remarked: "I know my father has been in the SPJST over 50 years and I wonder why he hasn't received his 50year pin." I advised them to write to the SL, however, I do not know if that happened. Please follow the advice given by Brother Mikeska; you will help yourself, your parents and the SL records department. * * Some time ago we heard a fine story which clearly shows the difference between just working and cooperating. It also stresses that even if people may work hard individually their effort is wasted if it is not properly channeled with the work production of others involved.

The story is as follows: A man went to the country store to buy himself a pair of overalls and when he came home he realized that they were three inches too long.

He asked his wife to cut them down and she refused. Angered by his wife's refusal, he sat up that night and after all were in bed, he cut three inches off his overalls and went to bed.

The wife had second thoughts about the matter and got out of bed, cut three inches of the overalls and went back to bed.

The mother-in-law meanwhile, was thinking about preserving the peace in the family, so she got out of bed, cut three inches off the cuff, sewed the ends up, and went back to bed.

This little incident proves that all were working and helping, however they certainly were not cooperating.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY-TREASURER FIFTY-YEAR MEMBERS POSSIBLE OMISSIONS Dear Members: It is possible that some members Who actually should have received their 50-year pins, this year or in years past, may have been omitted due to reasons beyond our control. A list of those members who should receive their 50-year pins during 1978 appeared in the Feb. 22nd, 1978, issue of the Vestnik. If your name did not appear on this list or a prior list and you believe that you should have received a 50-year pin, please be sure to call this to our attention.

The names of those members scheduled to receive their 50-year pins each year are obtained with the assistance of our computer service. An omission can occur in the instance when a member purchases one class or type of insurance certificate and then later exchanges it for another class or type of certificate.

In years past, when a member exchanged one certificate for another certificate, his old admission date was dropped and the new record then appeared as if the member was first joining the SPJST at the time of the exchange.

For example, if a member joined the SPJST in 1928 or earli7, he should receive or should have received a 50-year pin, but if he exchanged that first certificate for another certificate, the computer service will not include his name on a list until 50 years from the date of the exchange.

The solution to this problem at this point borders on the possible. It would involve first going through the files of our 54,000plus members to select all of those over age 50, which would narrow the possibilities to somewhere in the vicinity of 15,000 files. These

4 remaining files would then have to be checked against the various old membership record books in an attempt to discover any exchanges of certificates. This would take a staff of several people several months to locate the small number of members that have been omitted.

If you joined the SFJST in 1928 or earlier and later exchanged your certificate, please let us know.

We will check your individual file to see if you are entitled to a 50year membership pin. If you are entitled to the pin, we will see that you receive one.

Mikeska Secretary-Treasurer SPJST — EXCERPTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE FIRST QUARTERLY MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE SPJST, HELD JANUARY 10, 11, and 12, 1978, AT THE HOME OFFICE IN TEMPLE, TEXAS The meeting was called to order on Jan. 10, 1978, at 9 a.m. with all Supreme Lodge members present, to-wit: Nick A. Vanek — VI Bdbl Bayer — VII MINUTES — The first order of business was consideration of the minutes of the October 11-13, 1977 Supreme Lodge meeting. It was decided to dispense with the reading of the minutes, but each Supreme Lodge member was given opportunity to point out any correctons that might be needed.

There were no corrections and the minutes were approved as presented.

President Morris reported on the following: TRAVEL AND FUNCTIONS ATTENDED — President Morris referred to his report and discussed some of the 15 functions he attended during the past quarter.

He reported that the new Lodge 187, "Spirit of Round Rock" chartering will take place at Lodge 18, Elgin, Feb 12th, 1978.

VtSTNiK The date for the dedication of the new lodge home of Lodge No. 188, Centerville, has been set.

The date for the dedication of the new lodge home of Lodge 178, Longview, has been set for Saturday, March 4, 1978.

He reported that the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor would be observing its 20th anniversary on April 16th with a program and open house.

SPJST CALENDARS — The 1978 SPJST calendars were dispatched from the Temple Post Office on Dec. 28, 1977, to those members receiving the Vestnik. The number dispatched was 14,268, and postage amounted to $439.04.

CONTRIBUTIONS AND DONATIONS — He referred to a written list of contributions and donations authorized by the convention and paid by the Society during 1977 to schools and universities teaching the Czech language and including a $116.67 monthly supplemental payment to the teacher of Czech, at the University of Houston for the school term 1977-78.

He and Financial Secretary Mikulas reported in detail on meetings and actions taken to try to straighten out the financial affairs of a lodge in District II relating to, its mortuary premiums.

Financial Secretary Mikulas explained that he conducted a thorough examination of the lodge books but stated he was not furnished with sufficient records to conduct a full audit.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT — President Morris invited SYD Dorothy Massey to the boardroom to present her report and, explain some proposed changes. The minutes of the DYC meeting of Nov. 12th, 1977 were also considered.

SYD Massey explained a proposed change in the scoring system for our YADs. It was felt that the revision would improve the scoring of contestants by eliminating the problem caused by one judge who scores extremely low or extremely high, while two other judges score reasonably close together. Under our old system, one judge using extreme scores could control the outcome of a contest.

After due consideration, it was agreed that the Youth Department be authorized to use the proposed scoring system for 1978 on a trial basis

SYD Massey's written report was considered. Her itemized listing of Youth Department expenditures for 1977 indicated that $70,616.83 was expended on an average of 691 youth attending the meetings each month. The cost per each active youth member for the year 1977 was $102.19.

SYD Massey's report was accepted to be placed of record.

The agenda returned to President Morris' report.

SPJST HISTORY — The board took up consideration of the 100 typewritten pages of the history that had been completed by President Morris. Lengthy discussion of the draft followed and suggestion.s were made by various members of the board. Brother Morris said he would take into account the sUggestions.

EMPLOYEE SALARIES — The officers' recommendation for salary increases for employees was presented for consideration and approved after due consideration.

LETTERS — President Morris read the following letters: (1) A letter from a parent expressing gratitude for selecting her son to represent the SPJST at the last TFC Youth Spectacular.

(2) A letter from Miss Joyce Wachsmann, recipient of the SPJST scholarship, expressing appreciation for the award.

(3) A letter from the superintendent of the El Campo Independent School District thanking the SPJST for the $250.00 check, presented to the school district toward instruction in the Czech language.

(4) A letter from the secretarytreasurer of the Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC) informing the Society that the SPJST was next in line to recommend an individual from the SPJST for the TFC Board of Directors.

Director Pokladnik was nominated for the position of TFC director. Secretary-Treasurer. Mikeska was also nominated, but he declined the nomination in favor of Director Pokladnik, whereupon Director Pokladnik was elected.

(5) A letter from the president of a computer firm was read presenting various advantages of data processing and the advantages of "mini" and "micro" computers.

Comments were made indicating a feeling that due to growth of the

Wednesday, March 1, 1978 Society, increased record keeping requirements and labor costs of maintaining a manual record system, the Society would soon need to consider some form of data processing within the Home Office.

An in-house computer would enable the Home Office to provide better service to the membership.

A motion was adopted that the secretary-treasurer gather more information concerning Home Office data processing to be reported periodically.

HISTORICAL RECORDS — President Morris reported that while conducting research for the SPJST History at the University of Texas Archives he discovered an abundance of historical information pertaining to the SPJST on extremely old and very brittle and fragile newsprint, and recommended that the SPJST undertake to microfilm those newspapers and documents containing information pertaining to the SPJST. He was authorized to research the cost of microfilming certain portions of the Svoboda and other material and report his findings in the April Supreme Lodge meeting.

UNRELATED ACTIVITIES OF LOCAL LODGES — It was agreed that President Morris, with the aid of Legal Advisor Lesikar, review and revise a letter he wrote to local lodges dated Aug. le, 1976 and mail a similar updated information letter to local lodges concerning unrelated activities.

SPJST CALENDAR FOR 1979 — After discussion, it was agreed to proceed with plans for an SPJST calendar for 1979.

President Morris' report was accepted to ibe placed of record.

Vice President Hejny reported on

the following: SALES — Vice President Hejny reported that the Society had exceeded 20 million in new applications for life insurance.

He indicated that he was very pleased with the record-breaking sales.'

NAFIC / FRATERNAL FIELD MANAGERS' ASSN. CONFERENCE — After recommendation by Vice President Hejny, it was agreed to delegate SFM Silas Smith to attend the NAFIC/FFMA Conference schedUled for May. RATE BOOKS—He reported that the new rate books are now being printed.

EMPLOYEES' RETIREMENT PLAN — He reported that our amended retirement plan had been submitted by our actuary to the State Board of Insurance for approval. It was stated that if the plan is approved by the State Board of Insurance it can then be submitted to the IRS for approval.

PROPOSED NEW LODGES — Report was made on proposed lodges in Irving, No. 183; Marlin, No. 182, and Rockdale, No. 186, that have been pending for some time. It was agreed that SFM Smith make one final attempt to organize these lodges, and if satisfactory progress is not made within 30 days, that efforts to organize the lodges be discontinued.

Recess for the day was taken at 5 p.m. and the meeting was called back to order on Jan. 11, at 9 a.m.

SALES REPRESENTATIVES' INCENTIVES—Some of the long-time sales representatives application-amonth and application-a-week contest winners have received a large number of plaques and indicated they would prefer a gift. After discussion, a motion was adopted to allow a cash gift to those sales winners who were in the application-a-week club over 600 weeks, and in the application-amonth club over 148 months.

Vice President Hejny reported that four SRs had written over one million dollars of life insurance applications during 1977. After discussion, a motion was adopted to authorize Vice President Hejny to plan a sales appreciation luncheon for April 10th, the night before the April Supreme Lodge meeting, to include the four SRs and their spouses; the DSRs and spouses; and Supreme Lodge members and spouses.

There was a consensus of opinion that another state field manager be hired. It was concluded that Vice President Hejny has authority .to proceed as soon as possible under Article 32 (1) of our bylaws and that a motion to hire a State Field Manager was not necessary at this time A motion was then adopted to set the salary for the additional SFM. Vice President Hejny's report was accepted to be placed of record..

SFM Silas Smith's Report: The Board considered SFM

Smith's written report. Vice President Hejny and other members of the Board complimented him and stated that his work in the field helped the Society achieve record sales of over 20 million during 1977.

He commented on efforts to organize new lodges in Marlin and Irving.

The members of the Supreme Lodge discussed the procedures followed in organizing new lodges.

Legal Advisor Lesikar reviewed the applicable by-laws and members of the Board made various suggestions relative to procedures.

The entire Sales Department was commended on doing an excellent job during 1977.

The reasons for lack of lodge activity and sales in some areas were discussed. One of the reasons cited was that the leadership in some inactive lodges is satisfied with things as they are and they are not interested in change or progress.

SFM Smith's report was accepted to be placed of record.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported on the following: LETTERS— (1) A letter was read from the Southern District of American Sokol Organization thanking the Society for support and conveying best wishes for 1978.

(2) A letter was read from the president of SPJST Lodge No. 180, Burleson, expressing gratitude and appreciation for considering their lodge building loan request. The letter stated that Lodge No. 180 anticipated they would proceed with the building based on the loan the Supreme Lodge had approved.

(3) The minutes of the Publication Committee meeting of Sept.

24th, 1977 and their guidelines for the editor were acknowledged.

(4) A letter was read from the office employees expressing appreciation and gratitude for courtesies extended during Christmastime and throughout the year.

ESTATE LOANS — He reported that as of Dec. 31, 1977, we had invested in 1,155 real estate loans the sum of $18,724,382.76.

A list of 16 loans three or more months delinquent was presented along with his recommendations for action. Appropriate actions were authorized on each.

He reported on the handling of

6 135 full and partial releases. It was stated that there was a large increase in the number of partial releases processed. Explanation of our partial release fees followed.

OltriCERS' MEETINGS — Report was made on eight meetings officers of the Supreme Lodge, held concerning investments. Since copies of the original minutes were furnished to each Supreme Lodge member, the minutes were not read and were accepted on motion duly passed.

CERTinCATES OF DEPOSIT PURCHASED THIS QUARTER — Report was made on investment in nine certificates of deposit. The purchases were ratified.

INVESTMENTS DURING 1977— Report was made on investments handled during 1977. The amount invested over the long-term and short-term in 95 new mortgage loans, bonds, U.S. Treasury bills, and bank certificates of deposit amounting to a handling of $5,69'7,403.33.

He referred to a data sheet comparing the amounts and percentages of our assets invested in each of ten categories over the years 1974 through 1977.

LIQUID SECURITIES — It was explained that we have shortterm investments set aside to meet cash needs for loan closings and other contingencies.

LOAN APPLICATIONS — The Society has $2,194,965.33 of mortgage loans approved and in process. Discussion followed as to whether the Society would be in a position to accept more applications from members considering the large amount of loan commitments after which a motion was adopted to allow $100,000 per district for real estate loans to mem bers this quarter.

The interest rate will remain at 9%.

REAL ESTATE OWNED AND FURNITURE„/OFFICE EQUIPMENT — It was reported that the Society owns no real estate but the Home Office property since there were no loan foreclosures during 1977.

After allowing for 1977 depreciation, our furniture and office equipment is carried at a book value of $54,448.54.

COMMON STOCKS—Report was made on the status and current market value of all common stocks in our portfolio.

TRANSFER OF FUNDS — The transfer of funds in our depositories as allowed in Article 38 (c) was authorized.

DEATH CLAIMS AND MATURED ENDOWMENTS — He reported that 406 death claims were paid during 1977 totaling $709,940.42, an increase of some $14,000 over 1976.

A total of 114 matured endowments were processed for $122,856.62.

IRS AUDIT — Report was made that various documents and records of the Society were audited by a representative of the Exempt Organizations Division of the Houston IRS Office during the week of Oct. 31, 1977. IRS forms 990, 941, 1099, W2, W4, the pension plan and various other records and documents were examined. Each department handled that portion of the audit applicable to the records and forms controlled by such department.

It was noted that the audit was a routine matter and that we had information that the IRS has audited many fraternal societies the past few years and that we could expect similar audits on a periodic basis.

The audit was reportedly timeconsuming, but the examiner was courteous and carried out the examination in a highly professional manner. He indicated that the Society was operating in accordance with the laws under which we receive our tax exemption and stated that we would receive written communication from the IRS as to the findings of the examination. The written report has not been received to date.

STATE BOARD OF INSURANCE EXAMINATION — The results of the triennial examination of the Society was completed on March 22, 1977, but the written report still has not been received.

FIFTY-YEAR MEMBERS — During 1978, 114 members are scheduled to receive 50-year pins. Each lodge secretary has been furnished with a list of those entitled to receive their 50-year pin. Each lodge has again been given the option of presenting the pins in lieu of direct mailing from the Home Office and the secretary-treasurer will handle this according to the instructions of each lodge.

DIRECTOR'S HANDBOOK — He asked for comments and sugges-

tions for any corrections or revision to the handbook which he had recently completed and mailed to each Supreme Lodge member.

Several directors indicated the handbook would be helpful and indicated they were pleased with the final product.

FRATERNAL QUESTIONNAIRE— The local lodge activity report forms were mailed to each lodge.

The reports must be returned to the secretary-treasurer by May 15th to be counted in the combined report to the NFCA. A number of lodges were said to failed to file their report last year including a number of large tlodges.

Each director was asked to emphasize the importance of returning the completed questionnaire.

Director Pokiadnik who serves as chairman of the NFCA Fraternal Questionnaire ComMittee representing all fraternal societies spoke of the importance of, their return.

Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska's report was accepted to be placed of record.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on the following: GAIN IN ASSETS — He reported that our gain in assets for 1977 was $1,137,832.79. He also reviewed an itemized listing of the gain in assets for the Society over the past ten years.

REFUND TO LODGES — The 8% refund to lodges amounted to $136,847.89, which represented an increase of $15,323.11 over the past year. The refund checks included the amount of $5,10660 which represented 15 cents per each member's premium refund check distributed during the year.

VESTNIK — He stated that the Vestnik is mailed to 14,268 members.

NEW CERTIFICATES & TERMINATIONS — He reported on accounting for 3,740 new certificates in the amount of $17,071,757.04 of insurance for the period from Dec. 15th, 1976 through Dec. 15, 1977.

There were 2,229 terminations handled for $7,085,861.00. The net gain in membership over the period was reportedly 1,511 certificates in the amount of $9,985,896.04.

Total insurance in force stands. at $117,343,873.04 and membership at 53,941.

DELINQUENT LODGES — He discussed actions taken with each of several delinquent lodges and

IRS AUDIT — He reported on the IRS audit regarding his department.

SALARY ADJUSTMENT, SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS AND EDITOR — A copy of a U.S. Department of Labor bulletin was exhibited which indicated a cost of living increase of 6.7% as of the December Labor Department report. The XXII Convention allowed an adjustment of up to 6% to the Supreme Lodge officers and editor, and the full percentage to the Legal Advisor.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INSURANCE COMMISSIONERS — He read a letter from the NAIC concerning the Early Warning Report Program. The Society was urged by that letter and also a letter from the NFCA suggesting that we participate in the report program. Stock companies had participated in the program for several years and fraternal companies are now being urged to also participate. It was so agreed.

Financial Secretary Mikulas was designated as the contact officer for Naic Early Warning Program.

EMPLOYEES' RETIREMENT PLAN —He informed the Board that the Pension Committee met on Jan. 9th, 1978 concerning the amendment of the last convention applying to retired lives.

DISCOUNT ON 'A' & 'B' certifificates — The customary action on discount of premiums on Class 'A' and 'B' certificates allowed

by Article No. 07 (z) was considered. A motion was adopted to allow discount of 25% on premiums to all members in Class 'A' and 'B' whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained the age of 70 or more and an additional 25% discount when they attain age 75.

CASH ON DEPOSIT — Cash on deposit was reported.

Financial Secretary Mikulas' report was accepted to be placed of record.

Recess for the day was taken at 5 p.m. and the meeting was called back to order on Jan. 12th, 1978, at 9 a.m.

VESTNIK CONTRACT The Supreme Lodge officers were authorized to ascertain the U.S. Cost of Living Index change as of Jan. 1, 1978 when Such figures are available and to adjust the contract with the Vestnik publisher accordingly.

Legal Advisor Lesikar reported on the following: PENDING LOANS — He referred to written report on the status of legal work on 39 mortgage loans in process.

Objection to a requirement of flood insurance by one of our loan applicants was discussed. After a review of the matter it was left to the discretion of the director and officers on whether or not to require flood insurance in this instance.

It was reported that one loan application could not be closed because the applicant did not secure a valid Mechanic's and Materialmen's Lien contract before starting construction, in spite of the fact that he was informed of this requirement in writing numerous times by the secretary-treasurer and legal advisor.

FORECLOSURES — Report was made on two pending foreclosures.

LITIGATION—He stated that the Society had no litigation pending.

CONSULTATIONS — Review was made of consultations concerning legal problems and legal opinions given on various matters during the quarter.

There was a review of actions taken concerning supplements to instructors of Czech and it was concluded that actions taken thus far were in compliance with convention actions.

Legal Advisor Lesikar stated that the work load in all of the officers' departments is constantly increasing. He complimented President Morris on his work with the history, and Secy.-Treasurer Mikeska on a good job in preparing the handbook for the directors. He noted that the directors are being required to spend more and more time on matters pertaining to the Society.

Legal Advisor Lesikar's report was accepted to be placed of record.

REPORT OF DIRECTORS — The seven directors of the Society presented the report of their

audit conducted Jan. 9th, 1978.

Clarification was asked on several items and explanations were given.

The written report of the directors will be placed of record.

Director Kubena — He stated that he was well pleased that the Society had a very good year during 197'7 and that it was a great feeling to review the accomplishments during 1977.

He indicated that we should not encourage use of the benefit of making loans to members to sell life insurance because demand for loans has become so much greater than funds available for that purpose. Instead he said we should stress the fact that the SPJST is a family-oriented Society.

He said he appreciated the cooperation received and complimented Financial Secretary Mikulas on the fine job he has done during his first year as a Supreme Lodge officer.

Director Vitek — He said that 1977 had been an enjoyable year and much had been accomplished.

He commented that it was nice that several lodges were building new lodge homes.

He spoke of the success of the new Lodge 187 in Round Rock and invited all to attend their chartering ceremony on Feb. 12th, 1978 at the Elgin SPJST lodge home. The lodge was said to now have in excess of 200 members.

He complimented Vice President Hejny on the sales records that were set during 1977.

Director Pokladnik — He said that he hoped that Vice President Hejny would be successful in finding a second field manager soon.

He suggested that we should consider allowing Brother Otto Hanus to find some help working with the LAM Department.

Director Pokladnik was authorized to attend the NFCA mid-year Press and PR meeting.

He noted the costs of developing film for pictures in the Vestnik and suggested that we check on the arrangements.

He invited all to attend the dedication of the new lodge home of Longview Lodge 178 on March 4th, 1978, and also invited all to the 20th Anniversary celebration of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor on April 16. He stated that the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes were current with all of their payments.

8 Director Pokladnik discussed the need for completion of the slide presentation. It was agreed that the slide series include a prepared text.

He pointed out that all of the directors are doing a good job in promoting the Society in their respective districts in looking after the welfare of the GRIST. He complimented Legal Advisor Lesikar on looking out for the best interests of our members and our Society as a whole. He also praised all of the Supreme Lodge officers and their staff for the prompt response to all matters and concluded by wishing all good health for 1978.

Director Broz - He stated that he felt that all the directors and officers were doing a fine job.

He invited all to attend the District IV meeting on April 23rd and remarked that the Rowena lodge had just completed a remodeling of their building. He mentioned that there were plans being made for a brief historical program of the Rowena, lodge at the district meeting.

He concluded with other brief remarks and extended best wishes for 1978 to everyone.

Director Hanus - He said that last year was an excellent year.

He indicated that his first year as a director was a unique experience for him. He indicated that he eagerly looks forward to another year of service as a director and concluded with brief appropriate remarks.

Director Vanek - He stated he hoped that in the future another lodge in District VI would eventually 1:iuild a new home.

He was highly complimentary of the success of our sales efforts the past year.

He reported on a problem with a lodge in his district and his efforts to solve it.

He commended Financial Secretary Mikulas on his fine job his first year at the Supreme Lodge, Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska on the excellent job in writing the handbook for directors, and Legal Advisor Lesikar on the capable assistance he always gives.

Director Bayer - He stated that 1977 had been a most exceptional year for the Society.

He reported on construction progress of the new home of

SPJST Lodge No. 79.

He informed the Board that the history of Lodge No. 107 would soon be ready. Lodge No. 107 was said to now have an organized square dance group called the "Flores\dile Peanut Squares."

He said he was promoting the SPJST as much as possible in his various travels over the district and concluded by wishing everyone well.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting was set for April 11, 12, and 13, 1978.

There being no further business, President Morris adjourned the meeting at 3:40 p.m.

REPORTS DISTRICT III SALES REPRESEN'PATIVE'S REPORT Another successful year of activity and progress of SPJST has entered the pages of history and we are viewing the distant horizons of the new year with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.

We are especially proud of our top producer for January in District III, Brother Hugo Kocian. He was not only top producer in our district but the No. 2 producer in the state. This is quite an accomplishment considering that last year we had four million-dollar producers in the state. We also had production from three representatives who were inactive last year. This is encouraging.

Our Valentine couple was Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Bingham. Ann was presented a beautiful pot of tulips and her daughter, Stacy, had the honor of presenting the tulips.

Caught you off guard didn't we, Ann. You members who do not attend our monthly meetings are missing so very much. Our president, Brother Victor Peter is a great person and he believes in spreading out and is including as many members on all the committees as he can, so that the membership will feel they are really needed to qrd

no one member is over-loaded. You never know whose name will be pulled from the pot to receive the $50 in March, so why not come on out and see?

I had a very interesting letter from Lillie Huber, John Stasa's daughter. See how an article will bring people together? Brother Stasa wrote a history of Buckholts and when I mentioned I had attended Bryant Station School, Lillie wrote that she also had attended there. (Lillie, I was a Butterfield). It was great to read Mayor Crowe had declared a "John Stasa Day." It makes you feel very proud when something like this happens in your hometown.

What do you do with your Vestnik when you receive it? You would be amazed at the knowledge and enjoyment that is inside that `ole lodge paper" that some of us toss in file 13.

Dear Members and Friends: We had a good turnout for our February 2nd meeting. You missed a good meeting if you were unable to attend.

Youth Leader Clyde Parnell reported on the youth organizational meeting held the 29th of January. State Youth Director Dorothy Massey and District III Youth Director Ed Kamas showed some very informative slides of the Youth Camp and the Royalty Coronation.

They also gave us some good guidelines and informed us of coming youth events. Carole Slavik, Marie Hampton and Karen Janek were appointed as assistant youth leaders. Let's get behind this program and help our youth off to a good start.

A moment of silent prayer was held for our departed member, Sister Nellie Vecera, who passed away Jan. 28th. Sympathy was also extended to Brother Parnell in the recent loss of his mother.

Entertainment Committee Chmn.

Buz Tankersley reported on the success of our January dance. He expressed appreciation to all those who helped and for the donations which were made. We also wish to thank Lodge No. 92 for co-sponsoring the dance and providing their facilities.

The recommendation of the Resolutions Committee was adopted.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in the name of deceased members. A plaque will be furnished with the names of these members and the date of their departure, and will be displayed in our future lodge hall.

Memorial cards will be sent to the families. Anyone desiring to make a memorial contribution may contact a member of the Resolution Committee or a lodge officer.

Building Committee Chmn. Jerry Janek reported that more bids have been received and reviewed and firm ccmmitments are being secured. If all goes well, we should commence construction in March.

Those appointed to the Rules

and Regulations Committee are Bob Smajstrla, Sr., Buz Tankersley, Mary Ann Krivanek, Jerry Janek and Dennis Barabas.

We welcome new members John R. Sessions, Janet E. Sessions, Teresa L Sessions and Shannon D. Session& Brother Barabas reminded us of the Longview-Kilgore Lodge 178 grand opening set for March 4th.

He also encouraged members to attend the Round Rock Lodge 187 chartering ceremony at Elgin, Feb. 12th.

Mike Hejl reported that the Land Committee met Jan. 13th. The committee recommended that the lodge purchase the entire 8 acres at this time. The sales contract has been signed by representatives of the lodge and should have the closing soon.

Brother Hejl has received additional bids on the tables and chairs and, as soon as he can confirm the best bid, letters will be sent to the members soliciting for donations to purchase these items. Any one wishing to make a donation for the purchase of the tables and and chairs may contact Brother Hejl.

A check for $50 was mailed to Lodge 178, Longview-Kilgore (the proceeds from the sale of tickets mailed to us from Lodge 1781. We sincerely wish Lodge 178 a successful venture in their new lodge.

A letter from the Supreme Lodge President, Brother Nick A. Morris, was read requesting our lodge history. Sister Milady Hejl was appointed to compile our history and submit it to the Supreme Lodge.

We will be having a clean-up day at our lodge construction site very soon, weather permitting. When you are contacted, please make every effort to be there. We hope to combine work and play by having a cookout or some type of social gathering along with the cleanup.

The next meeting will be March 2nd, at 7:30 p.m. at Saint Ann's Catholic Church, Burleson; everyone come and take part! Youth are also encouraged to attend the lodge meetings.

The ground-breaking ceremony has been changed to April 1st at 4:00 p.m. so mark it on your calendar. The Ehtertainment Committee will be correlating the plans for this special event.

LODGE NO. 187, ROUND ROCK

With over 300 charter members the newly-organized SPJST Lodge 187, Spirit of Round Rock, received its charter Sunday, Feb. 12th, 1978 in Elgin, at Lodge 18's Stardust Ballroom.

The noon meal was served to some 200 members and guests. At 2 p.m., Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris and Supreme Lodge Secretary Leonard Mikeska conducted the chartering ceremonies.

In excess of 100 charter members followed Guide Arnold Peterson to the front of the hall for the impressive ceremony. District II officials, Henry Vitek, Monica Ivicic, Lad Zatopek and Frank Klinkovsky, brought words of welcome to the group. Silas Smith, state field manager, gave the history of how Lodge No. 187 had its beginning.

Dorothy Massey, state youth director, gave a very inspiring talk on the importance of the youth in the lodge. Program Chairman Lymon Larson introduced Lodge 187 President Ray Woytek, who thanked all for attending despite the inclement weather. He also gave special thanks to Elgin Lodge 18 for their hospitality in letting us use their hall for the day's activities. In closing, he urged the members to continue working toward their goal of fraternalism as we proceed now to build our new lodge home.

Dear Members and Guests: Once again our dancing fans were entertained by one of our best bands — The Music Masters of Bryan. We had a good crowd and many members who were not able to come before because of the flu. We were proud to have all of you back again.

We have new prospects who are encouraged to join our SPJST Society and local Lodge No. 74, from near and far at all times. We had an SPJST member as our guest, Wesley H. Stanley, from Port Lavaca, about 240 miles from here.

We are having quite a number of new members who are joining from Palestine and other far-away places. We really have many devoted members who are trying to do the best they can for our SPJST, and thanks for the wonderful cooperation in helping us find new prospects whom you feel are qualified to join our lodge.

I still don't know too much about some of the new programs that are being planned by the various committees; the trustees were to meet Feb. 22nd, so maybe I will have more to report for next week's Vestnik.

March 12th is our lodge's anniversary and plans are now being made to have as many members enjoy this day as possible. As the day draws closer, more details will be available.

Dear Members and Friends: We held our regular monthly meeting Feb. 19th at 2 p.m. at our new lodge home.

Brother Gene called the meeting to order after which we had the pledge of allegiance followed by the lodge motto, led by Loye Alvis.

We then had a moment of silence for our departed brothers and sisters.

Sister Jutta read the minutes,

after which we had a report from Treasurer Loma Harris.

Financial Secretary Marie Wiesner reported several new members.

Our fund-raising co-chairman, Val Steele, gave her report and confirmed that, in the future, the Friday and Saturday night game nights will be held at our new lodge home, starting Feb, 24th; for those who do not know the location of our new lodge home it is located on Farm Road 2087, just south of Interstate 20. As you travel either east or west on Interstate 20, just take the 2087 off ramp and remember to go south of Interstate 20.

We had a nice report from our youth leader, Floyd Snyder, who gave a warm report, as always. He asked that all the members save their aluminum beverage cans for the youth to sell, and he also asked all the lady members to bring a cake for the cake walk that the youth members are sponsoring during the grand opening.

The Entertainment Committee chairman gave a nice report and thanked all who have helped with the work, made donations, gave of their time, etc.

Brother Gene suggested that we have an investigation committee, as is commonplace with most lodges; those to serve on this committee will lie P ITrOntPd by the

12 president and vice president.

We now have two new insurance sales representatives: Betty Alvis and Brother Qualls.

A dress rehearsal for all who are to participate in the grand opening ceremonies, was held Feb. 28th.

There have been at least a couple of important changes concerning the grand opening. The ceremonies will begin at 12 noon, with food being served at that time for all.

There will be barbecued chicken, sausage, potato salad, baked beans, onions, pickles, and peppers. Pastries will be extra at a nominal fee. The plates will be $3.50 for adults and $2 for children, 10 and under. There will be coffee, tea, and water served with lunch, and in the afternoon, there will be sausage sandwiches available at $1 each.

We will have music during the afternoon by Mr. Lew Phipps and his orchestra.

There will be a cake walk and then a drawing for some very nice prizes.

There will be an evening dance from 8:30 to 12:30, with Eric Honza and his orchestra providing the music for your dancing pleasure in our new Heritage Ballroom. Incidentally, Eric Honza is from Ennis.

There will be a $3 charge per person for the dance in the evening.

Reservations can be made through Clara Hablinski, 984-8243, and it was decided that reserved tables will be held until 8 p.m. only unless paid for in advance.

As I mentioned before, the time for the festivities to start has been changed from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, because of all of our guests who come in from some distance, needing some refreshments and food.

Oud distinguished speakers will be our State Representative from the 13th Legislative District, Mr. Jimmy Mankins; Longview Mayor James R. Curtis, Jr., and Kilgore Mayor Foster Bean.

Our principal speaker will, of course, be Brother Nick A. Morris, president of the Supreme Lodge, SPJST. The rest of the program for the grand opening ceremonies can be seen in the Vestnik, issue of Feb. 8th,

Dear Members and Friends: Another month has passed and we here in Dime Box have had some real winter weather. The ground hog did not see his shadow in Dime Box on Feb. 2nd, neither did anyone else, very much, this past month. A lot of flu and sickness with colds and sinus trouble are all around us, and yet we should be thankful for not having such bad weather as is in the other states.

In spite of the cold and rain, we still have had dances at the SPJST Hall every weekend with very good turnouts. I would like to mention to anyone interested, that every time the hall is cleaned, many lost articles, such as coin purses, jewelry, combs, hair brushes, etc., are found. These items are put away in a box and if you have lost something at the Dime Box SPJST Hall, please ask to see these articles.

Feb. 2nd, this community was saddened by the death of one of our ,Lodge No. 13 members, Brother Frank Balcar, Sr., and again on Feb. 16th, by the death of Brother Julius A. Polansky. Both have been long-time members of the SPJST. Sympathy is extended to the families.

At this time I would also like to mention that two of our members are candidates in the Precinct 4 commissioner race. We wish them both the best of luck. Rumors have it that our lodge is supporting one candidate 100 percent. I would like to correct this rumor and say that we, as a lodge, are NOT supporting any one candidate. We do not get involved in politics and mention of this race has never been brought up or been discussed at any of our meetings. Rumors such as these, ought not be spread, and if you hear one, please find out some real facts before repeating it.

We paid tribute to two of our departed members, Brother Frank Balcar, Sr., and Brother Julius A. Polansky. All the officers' reports were read and approved. By carried motion the following persons were accepted as new members: Christy Leigh Wells, Rev. Isidore Rozycki, and Linda Kay Kornegay.

Door prizes were awarded to Patty Tydlacka, 1st; Glenn Wenzel, 2nd; and Albina Milburn,, 3rd. The meeting adjourned and was immediately followed by the youth club meeting.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Highlights of the January Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Jerry Ermis. Flag Bearer Mark Wahlberg posted the colors and led in the recitation of the pledge of allegiance to the flag. The members stood in silent tribute to our departed Brothers Ed Shiller and Otto Mikeska. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read. Correspondence was acknowledged from Frank and Vlasta.

Applications for membership were read and a motion made and seconded to accept such list as read. Financial Secretary Ellen Gill reported on a prosperous year for 1977. Youth Leader Mary Frances Wahlberg thanked everyone who helped In any way for the success of the Christmas program and announced the upcoming youth events.

Brother Harley Cox conveyed a most favorable detailed report for 1977, and expressed sincere thanks *0 his hard-working committee.

Monthly and/or annual financial reports were reported by the various -committee chairmen, all of which are attached to these minutes and made a part hereof.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Tim Kostom introduced the 1978 chairman of the board, Brother Ed Zalmanek, announced the sub-committees of the Board of

Wednesday, March 1, 1978 Trustees and expressed encouraging words for the year ahead.

A question was raised and a discussion followed regarding members serving on more than one committee and how this may or may not conform to the newly adopted local lodge R & Rs. Various members commented regarding the method and time period involved in submitting proposed R & R changes.

A motion was made by Brother Larry Pflaighaupt on behalf of the Auditing Committee to accept the financial reports as read. Such motion was seconded and so carried.

Sister Naomi Spencer reported on an upcoming Czech play and interested members should heed the Vestnik for the Dramatic Club announcements.

Sister Evelyn Vornsand reported of the happiness spread by the Choral Club at the Needville Rest Home and urged interested singers to rehearse with them on Tuesday nights in preparation for upcom ing events.

Sister Louise Kadlecek reported on behalf of the Premium Refund Cheek Committee that 30 checks had been issued at this meeting.

Brother Richard Wahlberg elaborated on the long hours which the R'&R Committee incurred and, therefore, made the motion to dispose of this committee. Seconded and carried.

Brother A. J. Stayton informed the membership that the price of Blue Room drinks will be raised, effective Feb. 1st, 1978, i.e., 10 cents on 75-cent drinks and 25 cents on $1 drinks.

Under new business a lengthy discussion was had regarding the dress code for all upcoming dances, and the membership queried Brother Harley Cox 'as to the meaning of the terminology proposed by his committee. A motion was made to omit the term "formal" and have members refer to the dress code in their monthly bulletins; all dances are to be "semi-formal," with, the exception of country-western dances, which may be casual.

President Ermis announced the appointment of a parliamentarian and a historian, as well as the following committees: grievance, telephone, memorial fund, inves-

tigating, auditing, refund check, and resolution.

A motion was made and seconded to have the R&R Committee appointed by the president and vice president. This motion was defeated; hence, compelling the R&R Committee to be elected by the membership.

In view of the late hour which was upon us, a motion was made and seconded to table this R&R Committee matter until the February meeting. Carried.

A motion was made to set aside the R&R and allow Sister Frances Olexa to remain as historian. Such motion was seconded and carried.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to our January birthday celebrants and anniversaries were acknowledged. Door prize winners were announced and the meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.

Fraternally, Marian J. Kadlecek Secretary SPJST — LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The special dance Saturday, Feb. 18th with music by Ed Gerlach was absolutely a complete sellout.

Guests came in and waited to see if there was going to be any cancellations at the last minute, so they could enjoy the dance. The music was great and the ladies were fabulously dressed. There were about two or three who claimed to have evening pants, but in my estimation, I plainly doubt it. It is quite a strain on the hosting committee to watch for the correct attire for that evening when the guests arrive in streams and the lines are heavy; it is hard to spot the dresses with a coat over them, so please, observe the dress code when the dance is special and dress accordingly and save the embarrassment of bath parties. Everyone had a great time and we are looking forward to having the pleasure, again, on Saturday, May 13th, 1978 when Ed Gerlach's music will again entertain us. The hosting committee for that night was Sister Ruthie Bartula, in charge, with her husband, Donnie, at her side. Sister Doris Starkey greeted the guests. Sister Ruth Duncan with her smiling face, was in charge of the cloak room and her husband, Seth, along with son-inlaw Donnie Bartula, were really busy until everyone got settled. It

13 was an enjoyable evening, so why not plan to be with us on May 13th, 1978.

A nice group of guests at Table No. 34 enjoyed the dance even when they were a part of another band by the name of "The Over The Hill Gang." These are friends of Ed and Agnes Miculka, who introduced me to these nice people.

The drummer, Mr. Bricker, was present; by the way, Mrs. Bricker is Agnes' hair dresser, and no wonder she always looks like she just stepped off of a fashion sheet.

The trumpet player, Mr. Soroleil, the banjo player, Mr. Hieait, and their singer, Mr. Powell, were also present. It was the first time I had met these lovely people, but I was told they do come out quite often. It was nice to have met you and come back again.

The monthly lodge meeting on Feb. 13th was nicely attended. Two couples celebrated their wedding anniversaries during the month of February and were generous and supplied the refreshments after the meeting that night, which always goes well with the fresh sandwiches Sister Annie Vela serves, with the help of Brother Bob Allbritton, who sure is a handy man.

Steve and Estelle Kelly were married 35 years and Bennie and Stacy Kocich, 25 years. Lots of birthdays to* place in February, but one was really outstanding; Brother F. F. Faltesek, 90 years of age.

A lot of our members should take an example from Brother Faltesek and his wife, Marie; they come to every meeting, unless one of them is ill, which is very seldom. Such devotion is hard to find. Brother Ed and Louise Kadlecek are so kind and see to it that they have transportation to and from the meetings. Happy birthday and wedding anniversaries.

Sister Erma O'Conner, also a member of the fraternal order WFLA Lodge 441, in Humble, was very thoughtful and, after their meeting and installation of 1978 officers by Julius Pustka of Lodge 428 in Houston, they all came out to our 13th lodge anniversary celebration Sunday, Feb. 12th.

Present were •President George Janak, Vice President Frank Koudelka, Secretary Erma O'Conner, Treasurer Lynn Duke and Entertainment Chmn. Karel Matejka, who operates a beer garden at

14 Lake Houston where Lodge 441 holds its meetings and socials.

They all expressed having a good time. Come back soon.

Sister Doris Starkey gave a lovely party to her friends at her home Saturday, Feb. 11th, from 6 to 9 p.m. Everyone there had a nice time and enjoyed Doris' hospitality. I don't know how she does it because she works, but at 6 p.m. she had guests arriving for cocktails and and at 7 a delicious dinner was served and enjoyed by all present. Thanks, it was very nice; will be waiting for another one.

After the party, almost every one went to Lodge 88 to dance.

Sister Hattie Chernosky is confined in St. Luke Hospital for ten days now, and is supposed to have surgery, but dear Hattie is undecided as to what course to take; we all wish you a speedy recovery and keep that smile of yours which makes you such a special person. I will stay in touch with you, chin up! Many of you know Sister Hattie and I will keep you informed of her health progress.

Services for Mrs. Stina Beal were held Saturday, Feb. 11th, 1978.

Mrs. Beal was confined in the nursing home for the past year; before then she lived with her daughter, Katherine Kline, and son-in-law, Chuck. We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to our members Katherine and Chuck, and family. May she rest in peace.

We lost a very dear and. faithful member in Sister Albino, Kusy.

She passed away after a lengthy illness in the Blalock Nursing Home. Sister Kusy died Feb. 17th, 1978 at the age of 80 years. She is survived by her daughter, Esther Lee Holton, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Heights Funeral Home and funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 20th at St. Theresa Church, with Father Jim, Rainosek officiating. Sister Albin% Kusy was laid to rest in the Forest Park Cemetery.

Our sincere sympathy to the surviving family.

LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Members: MP February meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Henry West.

The pledge of allegiance and lodge motto were recited by the members.

Brother Ed Kamas, District III youth counselor, was our visitor and we enjoyed his visit, especially the slides he showed after the meeting of the activities which the youth participated in at camp, YAD and royalty plus other activities. It was very interesting and informative as to what our youngsters are doing.

In roll call of officers, all were present except Czech Reporter Brother Otto Hanus, who was on a tour, seeing other museums.

The minutes of the January meeting were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt and approved after the following corrections were made.

A cheek for $50 from Sister Stransky shbuld have read: presented by Sister Stransky's daughter, Maruska, and her husband, Edward Screeny in memory of her father, Brother Stransky and also the social member accepted in January was Sislter Marie Buchness, instead of Bushing; they were then accepted.

Correspondence was a letter from SL President Morris on the information of getting the history of our lodge which is being done

by Brother Otto Hanus; and a thank-you note from LongviewKilgore Lodge No. 178, thanking us for the $40 sent to them for tickets sold at Lodge 66.

Sister Engelke read the minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held Monday night, Feb. 6th.

The Valentine dance on Saturday, Feb. 11th was enjoyed by everyone.

I wish to thank those who helped decorate the hall for this dance, especially Sister Ruby Orsag and others whb helped during the pres'entations: Sister Bonnie Pruitt,

Sister Dorothy Edwaxds and Brother Ray Orsag for setting up the speaker for us.

We congratulate the winners selected: Brother and Sister Jim Vrana, married the longest (49 yrs. in July), Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Harrington (recently married, 5 mos.), and to Mr. and Mrs. Rick Brown for coming the farthest distance (from Athens, Tex.); each received a beautiful corsage and boutonniere including a free pass to a dance of their choice at Linden Hall.

Sister Libbie Parma gave the youth club report, and introduced Brother Karnes who had visited the youth club. The youth' club members are operating the kitchen on the first and third Sundays of the month at game nights; they plan to have an Easter egg hunt for all children in the lodge after the March 19th meeting. The club donated to the Heart Fund and they are asking everyone to save all the aluminum cans to help them raise money for their activities.

The club had made Valentine boxes. Judges for selecting the winners were: Sisters Earline Morrison, Mary Simcik and Angelina West. The following were winners — Juniors, 1st, Janice Stanislav; 2nd, Janet Nors; 3rd, Donna Stanislay. Teens — 1st, Vikki Nors; 2nd Steven Stanislav; 3rd, Karen Shelton.

The club had also selected a Miss Valentine for 1978 -- Vikki Nors.

State Field Manager Silas Smith reported on the chartering ceremonies of Lodge 187, Spirit of Round Rock, and the progress they are making. We wish to congratulate them and wish them success on the growth of their lodge.

A sympathy card was sent to the Larry Pankonien family.

Others who have been very ill with the flu are Sister Dorothy Edwards, sons, Patrick and Brian, and Sister Maurine Trefny. If there are others who may be ill, we hope you are feeling better.

Sister Nita Mazanee thanked everyone for their kindness, prayers, cards, and phone calls during their son's stay in the hospital.

Fraternally, Frank C. Wagner - SPJST LODGE NO. 175, ROSENBERG Dear Members: First I want to apologize to the members who missed our monthly meeting because they were not notified of the change in location.

The owners of our meeting hall had a mix-up, whereby they rented the place on our meeting night to someone for a Valentine party.

Our regular meeting was held at the home of Brother and Sister Bessie Franek, and it is indeed wonderful to have such good and true members such as this couple.

Our business meeting was preceded by a few social minutes at which time we visited and became acquainted with our new transferred member, Brother Prank Jozic, and his charming wife.

After due attention to the regular details of our meeting, we turned to plans for our Czech

CZECH LANGUAGE CLASSES AT DEL MAR COLLEGE, CORPUS CHRISTI This project was a dream of many past years of some progressive organizations, namely, KJT,

KJZT, SPJST, Sokol, RIMS and SVPS. This dream and the wishes became a reality according to the information I received from the school committee elected Jan. 8th, 1978.

These names were published in the Vestnik dated Feb. 1st, on page 10 in the English section and also in the Czech section, on page 24.

Serving on the committee are: Albin Kucera, president; Monta Foster, vice president; Kristyna Knapek, secretary; and Frank Veselka, treasurer. Since the undersigned reporter is very much interested in this valuable program he is in contact with this committee much of the time.

The Czech classes started Friday, Feb. 3rd, 1978, at 6:30 p.m. and continue until 8:30 p.m. for the first class, and the second class is held from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Mr. Joseph Bittersman from Victoria is the teacher.

I was informed by Mrs. Kristyna Knapek that on Feb. 16th there were 51 students enrolled in these two classes and nine students enrolled for the next four-month semester.

An Invitation March 10th, 1978, at 7:30 p.m., there will be a social party at the Sokol Hall, sponsored by the students who attended the Czech classes at Del Mar College. These students have the liberty to invite their family and their friends to take part in this outstanding occasion. The ladies are asked to supply the kitchen with snacks and coffee; Mrs. Knapek said that she will bake a cake and she always puts out her specialty — a cake filled with tasty poppy seed. I remember well how the Ctech kolache and all the old-time pastry always is popular on the eating tables.

Our bartenders, Mr. and Mrs. Dudzienski, always have a sufficient supply of cold drinks and provide first class service.

I was also informed that in the Sokol Hall there will be some tables reserved for the articles to be displayed; it will be part of that program, so if you have something interesting at your home, bring pictures; history, literature, books, and any other things.

Mr. Joseph Bittersman will be the speaker and many others will have the opportunity to speak.

SPJST, among which were the following: "SPJST — Someone always is asking what the initials mean when used in numerous newspaper articles in this area. In Czech they stand for Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas', which means 'Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State, of Texas'.

"The SPJST is a wonderful order with the Supreme Lodge located at Temple. Many of the lodges are in the country near the lands farmed by Czechs.

"The SPJST, however, is much more than an insurance society.

It's almost a way of life in which persons of Ozech descent are bound together socially. The lodge has a vigorous youth program throughout the state.

"SPJST Halls are the scene of wedding feasts, funeral dinners, birthday parties and all kinds of meetings. They are places to drop in for a beer and socialize.

"If you've never been to a dance at an SPJST Hall, you've never tripped the light fantastic at its friendliest heights."

Isn't it nice to have friends like Mr. Nat Henderson, writing in a major newspaper and saying such favorable things about the SPJST? We appreciate his remarks and wish he were here today so that we could give him special recognition.

It is always nice to see brothers and sisters from neighboring lodges and districts attend these chartering ceremonies and supporting their brothers and sisters in these new lodges. It shows that you care.

As most of you know, Lodge 187 n Round Rock is in Williamson County and in District II of the SPJST, an area comprising six counties and a portion of Bastrop County, which includes this Lodge

Wednesday, March 1, 1978 18 here in Elgin. Lodge 187 joins t he other 16 lodges in District II as the newest lodge in the district, and the 130 lodges throughout the State of Texas.

Brothers and sisters, by the solemn pledge that you have just taken with Bro. Mikeska, you are now entitled to all the rights and privileges (and I might add — responsibilities) of membership in the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas and in this new. lodge, "Spirit of Round Rock" No. 187. Brother Mikeska has related to you the seriousness of the pledge that you have taken. I trust you will not take this pledge too lightly. The tenets upon which the SPJST was founded in 1897 were and are Benevolence, Humanity, and Brotherhood, and you should all bind yourselves to live according to these tenets and surely you will find it easier to overcome the day-to-day obstacles of your daily lives. I would also refer you to the color brochures which you found on the table as you came in, which graphically and pictorially depict the history and past of the SPJST since its beginning and organization in 1897. I would also like to remind you that we all owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our early-day pioneer forefathers, most or all of whom were of Czech extraction, who founded this wonderful organization back in. 1897.

As has been inevitable, the mantle of leadership has fallen upon succeeding generations and younger shoulders, and I think they have held and carried the mantle of leadership very well and our forefathers would te very proud of what has happened to the SPJST that they left us.

I will now ask the entire assembly to stand and repeat after me: "Let us stand united . . . in the cause of humanity . . . let us stand united . . . in the cause of brotherhood . . . let us stand united .. . in the bonds of fellowship . . . and fraternal love . .. for all time to come" As you heard earlier, the growth and progress of Lodge 187 has been solid and rapid within a relatively very short time Round Rock and the surrounding community is among the many areas adjacent to and along Interstate Hwy. 35 that extends from the Red River in the north to Laredo in the

21 southernmost part of the state, and which constitute some of the fastest growing areas in the entire nation. You are sitting directly astride this major communications and transportation artery. You should continue to do well in recruiting new members into your lodge, and with the cooperation of all your officers and members, good growth and progress is surely to come as the result.

The SPJST Society is a familyoriented organization, and of course, the family is the basic social unit of our American society. Everything that we do revolves around the family and that is exactly where the SPJST fits in.

In addition to excellent insurance benefits, we offer a well-rounded program of social, benevolent, and fraternal inter-action and fellowship among its members which reaches deep into the community.

Ask anyone here at Lodge 18 in Elgin what an important and integral part of this community this lodge and this facility is, and I think it can be said without fear of contradiction, that the community of Elgin is solidly behind the efforts of Lodge 18. All of our lodges need to become an integral part of the community in which they are located. Our lodges cannot isolate themselves and operate as a secret and closed organization because they are not secret and they are not closed—there is nothing secret about us. We operate entirely in the open under the authority of the statutes of the State of Texas and we have nothing to hide nor be ashamed of. How well any lodge sells itself and the SPJST message to the surrounding community will be reflected in direct proportion to your acceptance and your growth. Essentially, it is a public relations undertaking. You must let your neighbors and your community know that you are here, what you are doing, and what you stand for. Other lodges that have followed this course of action have fared well and have had no trouble or difficulty being accepted in the community and are enjoying steady gains in membership Of course, as in so many instances in any organization, so much depends upon capable leadership, and I feel that you are not lacking in this area either. To put it still another way, "You've got a good

thing going"; all you have to do is build on it, sell yourselves and your organization and people will naturally become interested in you and want to join you and be a part of your efforts. You will •find the whole undertaking to be "contagious."

You are joining a large fraternal family. You are not alone. You have ranks of fraternal brothers and sisters that reach from the Red River to the Gulf of Mexico and from the Sabine River to almost the Davis Mountains and the Panhandle of Texas some 54,000 strong. So you see, you are part of a living, vibrant, and growing fraternal family. It can be stated, without fear of contradiction, that the SPJST has been for a number of years and IS the fastest growing • Fraternal Benefit Society domiciled in Texas, so you have joined an organization that is going places and is definitely on the move.

Your District Youth Counselor, and your State Youth Director will, I am sure, have something to say about your youth and youth program very shortly, but I would like to state at this time and caution you not to alienate or isolate your young people. Don't forget about them! You will be looking for new leaders one of these days, so you should cultivate their interests and participation. They are a part of the entire social fabric of this state and nation, just as you once were, and you should include them in all your activities. Think on this and consider it carefully.

At this time, with Bro. Mikeska's help, I would like to present some items to Lodge 187, through you, Bro. Woytek, the lodge president.

First of all, we have your lodge emblem which is the emblem or symbol of the SPJST which you should display in a prominent place here today and in your meeting places in the coming weeks and months. This symbolizes the entire SPJST. You have of course the traditional star, with the letters SPJST within the five points of the star, surrounded by an oak leaf on the left denoting strength, steadfastness and sturdiness, and the leaf of the lily on the right, indicating cleanliness and moral purity. This emblem and the lodge charter, which you will receive shortly, have both been

framed and enclosed by our Supreme Lodge master craftsman, Bro. Otto Hanus, who is employed as the head of our museum, library, and archives department.

This is your lodge banner, which we have made for you and which should be displayed every time your lodge meets. Sis. Dorothy Massey, our State Youth Director, has monogrammed the banner for you with your lodge name and number.

This is your framed charter with the names of all the charter members typed thereon, and includes all those who have applied and been accepted for membership in Lodge 187 either before or by today. Those members who have applied for membership before or by this date and are approved later, will have their names added later in the Supreme Lodge and the charter will be returned to you for permanent possession.

In conclusion, I would like to say that I am convinced that the greatest good in this or any lodge will be accomplished by everyone — and I do mean everyone cooperating and pulling together for a common goal. We are confident that you are equal to the task. May your works bear fruit and may you enjoy much success in the coming months and years.

Feb. 14th our club visited the West Rest Haven and gave everyone a Valentine card that the youth club had made, also refreshments were brought, and everything was enjoyed by all.

Feb. 17th the youth members played games and for refreshments we had hot dogs and other goodies. They had fun playing games.

I want to thank each of you for the Valentine cards and gifts.

The youth club had a Valentine card contest. Winners were: Darrell Uptmor, 1st; Theresa Dobecka, 2nd; Bobby Hykel, 3rd.

For our March 5th meeting we are going to have a kite-flying contest which will be judged on the prettiest, oddiest, homemade, tiniest flying and highest flying in the big kites.

Our Easter party will be March 19th with the program starting at 3 p.m. An Easter egg hunt will follow the program and then supper at about 5 or 5:30 p.m. The lodge will furnish the meat and everyone bring a covered dish and pastry. After supper we will have social games. I hope all of you stay and enjoy the evening with us.

We discussed our dance which will be on March 11th, with music

by The Flashbacks. We also discussed a hat and coat check booth at the next dance. Volunteers will be expected to stay an hour in shifts.

As a money-making project, we discussed a huge garage sale in front of the lodge building when the weather warms up. We asked for donations in things to sell.

We had a guest speaker, Mr. Gene McBride, our lodge president, who spoke on adding members to

Wednesday, March 1, 1978 our youth club.

Judy Kudrna, my new youth assistant, was introduced and she brought two new members with her; they are Chris and Kevin Kudrna. We hope to see a lot of them in the future.

Our next meeting will be March 12th, at 3 p.m. Each child is asked to bring six candy or hard boiled eggs with them if they wish to hunt eggs. There will also be an Easter party of some sort. I hope everyone will be able to attend.

After our last meeting we had a Valentine party. Valentines were judged, games were played and refreshments were served. Everyone received Valentine candy, in one way or another. I want to thank each of you for attending and hope to see you at our next meeting.

Friday, Feb. 17th we had our fund-raising night and it was a real success. I would like to thank each and everyone of the youth members who came out and helped with the project. I would also like to thank the parents who helped.

Sunday, Feb. 19th was our District II skating party in Temple.

It was nice to see the large turnout; we also got to see all of our friends from the other local lodges.

We had 41 members attend the skating party.

There were seven door prizes given away. The winners from our youth club were: Vickie Tepera, David Pechal and Chip Nettles.

The main activity is our trip to Astroworld in the spring.

After the meeting we had a Valentine party. We played Valentine games, and had a guessing game for a big, medium, and small jar which were each filled with candy hearts. We also played message balloon, words out of Valentine, and the judging contest.

The winners of the guessing game were Shelia Trojacek (small jar), Melissa Macalik (medium jar), and Karen Honza (big jar).

The winner in the message balloon game was Billy Martinek, who received a box of almond clusters.

The judging contest was won by Kathleen Rejcek and Billy Martinek; both of them won chocolate hearts.

Example: malt still, (small table), mala kni ha, (small book), male okno, (small window. In the vocabulary there are adjectives given showing the three gender endings ST, a, and 6.

2. In the reading exercise the feminine nouns keid a, pohadka, and kniha, are spelled with the ending u. This is because in Czech when a noun is used in some funs tion other than the subject or predicate nominative it must be put into a case. The aforementioned feminine nouns are in the accusative case functioning as direct objects answering the question "'what?" The feminine nouns ending in 'a' change this ending to `te when used as direct objects.

Homework 1. Select suitable adjectives for the nouns given in the vocabulary.

Remember that the nouns are either masculine, feminine or neuter, depending on their endings, and the adjectives must agree with the nouns in gender ending.

2. Translate the reading exercise into English.

3. Memorize the vocabulary 4, Translate into Czech: I have a book.
