FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Surely all of us have heard the saying about the fact that no type of inclement or bad weather will stop the mail; it was written, of course, in respect to our mail carriers who endeavor to deliver the mail every day so that it would reach its destination in the shortest possible time. That certainly can be said of our Pony Express riders of the early West, however, this week in Central Texas was one to almost definitely refute and make false that statement. The Interstate Highway No. 35 (IH 35) and almost all of the roads (especially paved roads) were made impassable by a thin layer of glass-like ice covering the roadway. 111 35, as it is called, from Temple north, was cluttered with cars and trucks (especially the socalled 18-wheelers) that had simply gone out of control and politely, and some not so politely, slid off of the pavement into the ice and mud alongside the roadway. The road was especially treacherous at Lorena, between Temple and Waco, and at Abbott, between Waco and Hillsboro, just north of West. One such 18-wheeler was "jack-knifed" just south of West in the median, between the two roadways of 1-35 and the lettering on the truck read "U.S. Mail."
