Another year begun and another new SPJST lodge chartered! That phrase can be used as past tense after Sunday, February 12th, because that is the date set for the chartering of Lodge "Spirit of Round Rock" No. 187 to be held at Lodge No. 18, Elgin at 2 p.m.; the program is outlined on page 3 of this issue. For the nominal fee of $5 those attending can eat a nice meal at noon and have paid admission to the dance beginning at 4 p.m., with music by the Clover Leaf Band, so it seems that a nice evening is planned. * * On our front page are pictures of four of our sales representatives who have succeeded selling over a million dollars of our fraternal life insurance in one year. When Sister Lillian Kruse accomplished that seemingly impossible feat some years ago, there were some people who felt that it was partially due to the fact that Houston and the surrounding area was a metropolitan center, hence densely populated, however, Brother Chester Shmoldas came along a few years later, in the Croakett area, and proved that it can be done in an area other than a metropolis, and has done this more than once.

Now we have four who have acco nplished this in one year, in four different areas of our state.

They are certainly deserving of congratulations from all of us for their enthusiasm and tireless efforts for it took great dedication on their part in behalf of cur Society. All of us know that they did not accomplish these goals by sitting around and watching television. We are glad to place their pictures on the front page and dedicate our back page to all of our sales rep: e:entative'. We un"I :rths nd that FT? Ray Waytek accomplished his goal of $1,003,000 in lees than half a year. That's terrific!

Wednesday, February 8, 1978 It is true that old age depen dency is so serious a problem that it is engaging the attention of every government. It is so serious that research is being conducted in every state in the United States.

It is so serious that almost every person over 40 lists it as his number one financial problem. * * Not too long ago I came upon some very wise advice, given many years ago, about dealing with our social and economic problems. It read as follows: You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.

You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they should do for themselves.

High incentives promote top performance. A lack of incentive encourages mediocrity.

NEVVSBRIEFS Ground-Breaking at Lodge 186, Burleson Formal ground-breaking ceremonies for the new lodge home construction are set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 2nd, at the building site on 1-35 West, just south of Burleson adjoining the city limits of Burleson. SCHEDULE OFFICERS' WORKSHOPS — 1978 PRESIDENTS AND VICE PRESIDENTS, SECRETARIES, FINANCIAL SECRETARIES, AND TREASURERS

LODGE OFFICERS' WORKSHOPS — 1978 (Schedule in Accompanying Box) To AU Concerned: Based on precedence and recent actions of the Supreme Lodge, the following will be in effect for this year's workshops: 1) Officers this year will include those as before, with the addition of the ". . . lodge treasurer, or some other person designated by the lodge."

2) Sections will include lodge presidents and vice presidents in one section, lodge secretaries in another, and financial secretaries in another. The treasurers may attend any or all of the three sections, moving to them only at the start of the sessions or during the breaks.

3) lVfileage for one car only from each lodge, 15e a mile, however, if one of the locations is not convenient for the officers of a particular lodge on the date scheduled, they may attend the workshops at one of the other locations, but mileage would still be paid for only one car from each lodge at any one of the three locations. Anyone else• wishing to attend these workshops, other than mentioned here, is welcome to do so, furnishing their own transportation.

These workshops held in previous years were proven to be mutually beneficial. They will deal primarily with lodge procedures and administration. We are not including workshops on youth work or insurance per se, since these two areas are adequately covered by the vice president and state field manager and state youth director in their district and state seminars and training classes.

We must remember that our national and state laws define a Fraternal Benefit Society as "having a lodge system with ritualistic work, The more efficient our

lodges are, the better we, are insuring and guaranteeing our future as a Fraternal Benefit Society. The United States Internal Revenue Code specifies two primary requisites for a Fraternal Benefit Society: "a) Must operate on the lodge system, and b) Provide for the payment of life, sick, accident or other benefits to members or their dependents." Thus we see

the specific reference to a "lodge system" and it is through the lodge system that we must operate and improve our services. It behooves every officer mentioned above to attend these workshops as a part of his duty and obligation in being an officer in the local lodge, especially those who are new in the office and have not attended these workshops previously. We

REPORTS DISTRICT VI SALES REPRESENTATIVE'S REPORT (December Sales and Year-End Report) Congratulations and many thanks to all District VI sales representatives for exceeding our 1977 sales quota of $900,000 and obtaining a total of $1,266,800 in insurance sold to 197 new members.

Top sales representative of the year, again, was Brother Adolf E. Motal of Lodge 32, Victoria, with $233,500 in insurance sales to 30 members. Brother Motal is also the winner in the most members written up contest. He is a top winner in the Application-a-Month Club with 44 months, and he is the top winner in the Pace-Setters` Club.

This is a marvelous record!

Brother Frankie Vanek of El Campo Lodge No. 50 is second with $185,000 in insurance and 18 members. He is third in the Application-a-Month Club with 27 mon-

ths, and is a winner in the Pace Setters' Club, being second.

Brother Matt Vanek of Victoria Lodge 32 is in third place with $132,000 in insurance and 21 members. He is in fourth place in the Application-a-Month Club with 23 months, and is a winner in the Pace-Setters' Club, being third.

Sister Lottie Krutilek of Taiton Lodge 30 is in second place in the Application-a-Month Club with 40 months.

LODGE NO. 178, LONGVIEWKILGORE Dear Members and Friends, Just a short reminder from Pinewood Heritage Lodge No. 178 that our brand new lodge home is nearing completion and the excitement is mounting. Thirdly, we have our Grand Opening on the 4th day of March, which will be an all day festivity with Eric Honza and his band providing the music for the evening dance.

Another item of interest for those who have enjoyed game nights on Friday and Sunday nights — sometime in the near future we will be moving the location to the new Lodge 178 home.

I shall do my best to keep you posted and as soon as Val gives the word, I shall pass it on to you.

Keep these dates in mind and mark them on your calendar because they are important.

Fraternally, Mary Vaughan - SPJST — LODGE NO. 178, LONGVIEW - KILGORE Dear Members and Friends, We held a special meeting Feb. 1st, 1978 with Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris to finalize plans for our Grand Opening and Dedication of Lodge 178, which will take place March 4th, 1978.

All of the events of the day, the rituals and program, will be containea within a printed souvenir booklet. This booklet will also contain the names of all of us who serve as officers of the lodge, committee chairmen and committees, sales representatives and all concerned.

Also contained in the booklet will be the names of the original officers, committee chairmen and committees, sales representatives, and all concerned, who started Lodge 178 on August 30th, 1974.

The ceremonies will start at 11 a.m., with a few introductory words from our master of ceremonies, Mr. Bill Billingsly, after which we will go outside for the dedication.

We will have the flag raising with the pledge of allegiance led

by Ronald Hablinski, followed by the ribbon cutting with Nicole Harris as our scissors bearer. Our key

7 bearer will be Lester Line. The key will be a symbol of the official opening of the door to the new active lodge home After the outside ceremonies we will re-enter the hall where the festivities and ceremonies will continue.

We have every hope to begin the meal promptly at noon, with barbecue and sausage being served at a nominal fee.

There will be other food and desserts available.

Bill Billingsly will introduce all the Supreme Lodge directors as they are escorted into the hall by Mitch Wiesner, Billy Hablinski, and Jeff Alvis.

Next• escorted will be the Supreme Lodge officers, Lodge 178 President Gene Hablinski and Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris.

Brother Morris will introduce all of the wives or husbands of all of the visiting dignitaries from the Supreme Lodge.

Mr. Billingsly will then call upon President Gene Hablinski to speak, at which time he will introduce our local lodge officers, committee chairmen and committee members, board of trustees members, sales representatives, and anyone else who is involved.

Our principal speakers will include Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris, and hopefully, the Mayor of Kilgore Foster Bean, and Longview's mayor, James R. Curtis, Jr. We will have remarks from Mr. Sid Pokladnik, our District III director, after which Brother Eugene will introduce any other dignitaries or speakers.

We will have music during the day by Lew Phipes and orchestra.

The youth club will have a cake walk in the afternoon, after which there will be a drawing for prizes.

Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris will be in charge of publicity for Lodge 1'78 through radio, television, and newspaper advertising.

There will be an evening dance from 8:30 to 12:30 with the Eric Honza Orchestra providing the music.

I have tried to detail the day's activities for those who have never been to a grand opening and may, therefore, like to attend. It really sounds so exciting.

They both retired and are looking forward to taking it easy at the beautiful shores of Lake Livingston. I had a nice chat with both of them and enjoyed a refreshing drink in our cozy Blue Room while discussing all the great possibilities in store for them. They really mean it and are very enthused about moving and settling down on a .beautiful acreage site with trees and shrubs all around them and being able to dig into the earth and make things grow and look beautiful. They are planning to make this move about the end of February or the first of March and live in a 60-foot mobile home with all the conveniences. Both Ruth and Seth are enthused over this change and are looking forward to a rewarding life. The distance between their dream and the lodge is about 100 miles, which shouldn't keep them away completely. Ruth is a live wire and I cannot imagine her sitting around' just in one place.

We wish your dreams to come true and that you enjoy every minute of it, but we will miss you.

This is a reminder of our lodge anniversary celebration which will take place Feb. 12th, on a Sunday, and is an all-day affair, beginning with a delicious dinner and a social from 2 to 4 panl. and a free dance for everyone from 5 to 9 p.m. with music by Joe Patek. The Birthday Club Sisters are in charge of the pastry booth, so please, dear sisters and friends, be generous as usual and donate some of your delicious home-baked pastry, which is always greatly appreciated. The romantic operetta "The Beautiful Gypsy," as I mentioned in a previous letter, is in rehearsing stages and the songs are just out of this world. Dear friends, you really have something to look forward to. We are so happy that the Ladies' Circle of Dallas is planning to honor us with their visit at this presentation. I assure you no one will regret it.

The special dance Feb. 18th, with music!, by Ed Gerlach is completely sold out, so you see, if you waited too long you are out of luck, unless someone cancels out and the first one on the waiting list will have a chance. I am looking forward to

this dance because this band is well known.

Dear Members and Friends: I haven't forgotten you all; it's just that December was such a busy month. We all held up real well during December, health-wise, and we had a wonderful holiday season.

However, now some of us are sick with the flu and are a little slow starting all the new activities such as the new year brings.

First of all the new officers of our lodge were installed in our regular! :meeting, Jan. 11th, by Brother Jerry Prochazka, our District V president. We have a hard-working group for 1978. These members are interested and dedicated to the work of the lodge. Let's give them our support.

I wish I could do more than just say "thank you" to those of you who come out to work in the kitchen, who donated cakes, who came out to arrange the tables for dance nights, who sold tickets and helped to seat guests and other jobs that came up and had to be taken care of. Without you, we wouldn't have made it!

We are also going to miss our out-going president, vice president and second vice president; they say they will be around. Thank you for everything you have done for the lodge. All these good hardworking members are not looking for what the lodge can do for them but are looking for what they can do for 'the lodge. That's what

keeps our lodge alive.

An active lodge can provide and promote fraternal and social fellowship among its members. It can keep alive the customs and traditions of its forefathers, such as the Czech food, music, and dances and the Czech language. It can keep up with the needs of its members such as the sick, the bereaved, and the victims of various disasters; and last, but not least, to provide sound practical fraternal life insurance for its members and friends.

Our SPJST is a place where f am Hies can gather for fellowship. If you are new, don't hesitate, 'but come out and get acquainted and you may soon find yourself involved in some activity you will enjoy as well as finding new friends. Start coming to the regular meetings because each time you will learn a little more about your organization. You may be, lucky and win a door prize also.

Congratulations to Sister Vera Seale on winning $75 in our last meeting. Regular meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month, and our next meeting is Feb. 8th. at 7:30 p.m. Sometimes why don't you take a ride by the site of our new lodge home; the sooner we can pay for it the sooner we can start the new building.

We need more members, so if you have a relative or friend who doesn't belong, please talk to them or let us know who they are. The more members we have the easier it will be to obtain a loan for a new building. There is a job for everyone of us.

I hope all of you are well and are getting a good start on whatever you are doing this year. Next time I will tell you all about my plans and right now I am getting a good start, too.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Guests: We had the Music Masters entertaining our dancing fans on Jan. 28th and everyone had a good time. We had many guests from Houston and other far-away places.

One of our guests, Lillie Ruth Kinner' of Houston has joined our Lodge No. 74. We are proud to have all the guests who are invited by our fine members.

Our refreshment room has been re-arranged by two of our fine members, Johnny Paul Stewart and Eddie Smoldas; they have done a fine job. We now have more room to serve everyone more promptly.

We are going to have a Valentine party Feb. 12th from 3 to 6 p.m. Bring as many Valentines as you wish to give your friends. This was decided by several members when it was not thought of at our last meeting, but due to the fact that Valentine Day was so close, it was decided to go ahead and have it; it really is a good thing in bringing all of us closer together in loving and respecting one another more.

The ladies are supposed to bring salads which will be served to all who come. I hope most of you can come and bring your friends.

It was voted on to have our lodge meeting on the first Sunday of each quarter, so the next lodge meeting will be held April 2nd, at 2 p.m. We want all of you members to come; following the meeting we will have a covered dish supper, dancing or whatever

the members wish to do for fellowship.

Our youth club's regular meeting will be held every first Thursday and a social every third Thursday of each month, at '7 p.m.; other programs will be announced later.

The officers and trustees' meeting will be set at their next called meeting; the officers' and trustees' meetings will need to be a set date, except when there will be urgent need to have a called meeting. I will inform you on this later.

Wednesday, February 8, 1978 SOKOL ENNIS Sokol Karel Havlicek Borovsky, Ennis, will hold its annual gymnastic exhibition Sunday, Feb. 12th, at 1 p.m. at the Sokol Gymnastic Center in Ennis. There is no charge for the exhibition. Our program will include numbers by all classes, ages 4 to ? The gymnasts have been working very hard and are anxious to perform. A free dance, with music by the Texas Playmates will follow. Everyone is welcome to attend.

GETTING PEOPLE. TOGETHER

By Henrietta IClecka Member of Lodge 28, East Bernard .What are you doing this summer and fall? I would like to take you with me to Europe and Czechoslovakia. Every country on my itinerary is full of insights into the heritage and its history, the ways of its people, their language and the sheer beauty of this old world.

To me, the joy is seeing the majestic cities with chimneys and church steeples; and, in the countryside, the distant views across meadows and snow capped mountains.

As you travel in Europe, you can behold history come to life in a fantastic setting. Much of the charm of Europe is the unexpected sight, the glimpses of every day life. They just pop up as you stroll the streets of the famous cities, motor through the countryside, walk the mountain paths and valleys; sometimes it seems as if Europe is a stage setting, but the people are real.

Are you aware that every American has two heritages? Since, my husband, Rudy, and I are of second and third generation American - Czech lineage, naturally my interest lies in researching ancestors in Czechoslovakia. Since the TV drama "Roots," the search for one's ancestors has become immensely popular. My interest in mine and Rudy's started many years before.

As we were growing up our parents, especially my father, told me stories about Czechoslovakia. I had painted word pictures of traditions, ceremonies and the old ways of life that my grandparents brought to this country with them.

At the many family reunions, which were traditional on my fraternal side, I was exposed at an early age to family gatherings of aunts, uncles, cousins, etc., but, as a youngster, the Linily ties were not so interesting to me, I must admit. 12 since my father was the precise custodian of these family histories.

At the reunions, he would read all the particulars dating as far back as the 1700s.

Rudy remembers his grandmother Toman relating when she left one of the largest farms in her country, with a stucco home of one inch thick walls, adjoining stables, grain, hay, and equipment barns and lofts, forming a 'U' shaped structure in the village of Petrvaldik county or (okres) in Czech, of Novy Jicin. The church she was baptized and married in still stands in its 200 year Baroque style, with white and gold leaf interior in Petrvald, county of Novy Jicin, a distance of two miles, which they walked to and from their home, and that is exactly how we found it when we made our first visit to Czechoslovakia, and every year since, we visited this Moravian village in the valley of the Beskydy mountains.

Can you imagine our grandparents leaving all this beauty and coming to this new world of log cabins and the hardships that awaited them! Since we both have heard this story and numerous others, now we understand, how and why. How thankful we are that they made that tremendous journey over the Atlantic and we were born Americans.

Finally, my husband and I were making. plans for an eight-week sojourn to Europe in 1967, as our 26th wedding gift, and of course, Czechoslovakia was included in our itinerary and the intrigue of locating our ancestorial landmarks and meeting the families involved; but, thanks to my father's and Rudy's family records, we were lucky to locate them, immediately.

Before we departed, I wrote to the last address Rudy had from his maternal side to Petrvaldik, county of Novy Jicin. I also wrote to my maternal side of the family, the Drozds, (now spelled Drost) to the Narodni Vybor (city hall) in Ticha, county of Novy Jicin, asking if there still were any living relatives and that we would like to get m touch with them, since we were planning to visit Czechoslo vakia. To our surprise, immediate, -r two letters arrived, the first the Toman family patriarch, Jo wrote for her mother to ly's grandmother Toman, and

who now is a retired school teacher. From my family, the Drozds, the Narodni Vybor replied, there is still a living relative living in the same homestead and before too long, she wrote to me inviting us to her home. Rudy's relatives side of the family would be interested in visiting the ancestral homeland since there had been no letter contact after World War II, and my side of the family never knew there were American relatives.

Upon our arrival in Moravia, we were greeted with flowers and cordially invited into their homes.

As we entered into their home, the Czechoslovaks removed their shoes upon entering and put on slippers. Our slippers were awaiting us too, and what a beautiful custom, which I approve of.

After toasts of their national prune brandy of "Slivovice" and a hearty meal, the old photos were brought out; photographs that our grandparents had sent to their grandparents and that sealed the ties and proved we were all from one family tree.

As popularity of genealogy grows — some call it a family tree — I invite you to join Rudy and myself on our spring and fall tour to Europe and Czechoslovakia and you can also be on your own personal search for your "roots."

Here are a few tips in trying to locate your Czech ancestors. The first step on shaking your family tree is to locate the city and county of the specific ancestor.

Then start your own research by searching your attic for old letters, family Bibles, birth, marriage and death certificates, family photos might have names and dates on them, and any oral stories you can gather from the oldest family member, and last and the most forgotten, inquire at the funeral home, since they too keep good records. Through my own experience, we have located information from funeral home records.

Now you have gathered the momentos from corners of your home and it is like a detective story, except you don't get, shot. If you can pinpoint about where your ancestors migrated from, whether it IS Moravia, Bohemia, or Slovakia, you are making progress.

I emphasize, try to know the county in Czechoslovakia, since there

are numerous villages of identical names; or try to find out the name of a larger town that is nearby. All of these clues help. Most Czech Texans are from the Moravian area — all four sides of both of our families were.

Now you are ready to write letters. If you have an old address, regardless of how old it is, before or after World Wars I or (IL make an attempt to write there; usually relatives stay in the same homestead inherited from father to son, etc. Then also write the second letter to the Narodni Vybor, giving them the specific ancestor's name, birth date, address, also spouse's maiden name, if known, as far back as you can.

Mention you would like to locate living relatives, because you are planning to visit Czechoslovakia, and in 90 percent of the cases (I can vouch) you will hear from someone. Relatives like to make contact; they too may have heard and have vivid recollections of someone in the family who left for America, or you might catch them totally by surprise.

NEWSBRIEFS The date for the official chartering of Lodge 187 "Spirit of Round Rock" in Round Rock has been set for Sunday, Feb. 12th, 1978. The ceremonies and other events are scheduled to take place at Lodge No. 18, Elgin. Events will get under way with a meal being served at 12 noon, consisting of barbecue with all the trimmings at a nominal cost. Meal tickets will also include admission to the dance later in the afternoon. Admission to the dance only: $3 per person.

Chartering ceremonies will start promptly at 2 p.m., with SL President Nick A. Morris and SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska in charge. During the chartering ceremonies remarks will be made

FEATURES COUPLE HONORED ON 40th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. Jerry J. Beseda were honored by their daughters in the celebration of their 40th wedding anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14th, 1978.

The Rev. L. J. Price was the celebrant with Rev. Msgr. Albert V. Maneth of San Antonio, and Rev. Robert Barzy,k of Rosenberg as assistants.

Mary Erdelt was the soloist and Sandra Hartfield was the organist.

A reception and dinner hosted

by Mr. and Mrs. Ray J. Twordowski and Joan of San Antonio, Miss Rose Ann Beseda also of San Antonio, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry A. Barton and Luke of Luling, followed the church ceremony at the Knights of Columbus Home.

Friends, relatives, neighbors, and several original wedding attendants joined the honored couple and their children.

Out-of-town guests came from Fort Worth, San Antonio, Egypt, Victoria, Ganado, Edna, El Campo, Love City, Point Comfort, Rosenberg, Houston, 'Ellinger and Fayetteville.

Brother Beseda is a 50-year-plus member of SPJST Lodge No. 51 in Effinger.

YOUTH SECTION From The District Youth Counselors DISTRICT II YOUTH COUNSELOR The activities for 1978 are about to get under way. I hope everyone is ready and will participate in as many activities as possible. The first district activity we have scheduled is Feb. 19th and that is our annual skating party. This year the skating will be from 5 to 7 p.m., and will be held at the Skate Haven in Temple on North 31st Street, just north of the Temple High School. All district youth nuimbiers are invited and may bring a friend if you will only ask your friend to join your club. The

admission will be paid and door prizes will be given, so let's all plan to come and enjoy skating and see your SPJST friends again.

I will list a few dates that have already been set so you can mark your calendar and remember these dates.

March 12 — LRL (for youth leaders) in Brownwood April 9—District II spring meeting at Lodge 47, Seaton April 22 — Statewide youth leaders and assistant leaders seminar at Camp Val Verde May 8 — District II youth leaders and assistant leaders activity planning day July 9 — District II YAD (place still open) Last week in July — Summer camp (exact dates not yet available) August 13—District II fall meeting.

I hope this will give you an idea as to what activities are planned at this time.

Feb. 12th will be the date for the chartering of a new lodge for our District II: Lodge 187, Spirit of Round Rock. These chartering activities will be held at Lodge 18 Elgin Hail starting with a noon meal and ending with a dance in the late afternoon, so make plans to attend this chartering and help welcome this new lodge to our district.

Let's all attend our local youth club meetings so you don't miss out on the many activities being planned by your local lodge.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Vestnik Readers, Our last monthly meeting was Sunday, Jan. 15th, at 3 p.m.

President Rusty Bay called the meeting to order. Flag Bearer Penny Spitzenberger led the pledge of allegiance. Then our secretary, Patti Tydlacka, gave her report.

Theresa Zgabay gave the treasurer's report. They were both accepted as read.

We had two new members present: Paul and Leon Engles. Paul and Leon, we hope you have as much fun as we do.

We had 35 members and one visitor present.

The meeting was then turned over to our youth leader, Mrs. Nellene Spacek. She talked to us about going to Pooh's Park, Feb. 12th.

And the meeting was then turned over to our guest speaker, Mr. Jim Clampit. He gave us a very interesting talk about wildlife; we really enjoyed it. Thank you, Mr. Clampit, for coming out. and giving such an interesting talk.

Our door prize winners were Giggi Hosea and Russell Spacek.

Dear Members and Friends, The Elgin. Youth Club met Jan. 18th, at 7 p.m. in the youth room.

The meeting was called to order

by President Paula Peterson.

Beth Felefe led us in the pledge of allegiance.

Secretary Karol Alexander called the roll. There were 26 members three adults, and five guests who were: Julie Tharp, Aric and San dra Hayes, Tony Kaman, and Lori Joseph.

Doug Staton read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

I. G. Janea gave the treasurer's report and as of Dec. 9th, we have a balance of $1,339 and a few cents.

Under old business, thanks were given to those who helped make cookies, to take to the Golden Years Home during Christmas.

Under new business, it was discussed to have a dance marathon to raise money to help support the hospital and to donate the youths' services for clean-up after the hospital fund raising banquet. We then voted to set aside 10 percent of our popcorn money into a curtain fund. A May Fete committee was nominated to gather details and to plan for the coming May Fete.

Pat Young our assistant youth leader discussed with us why it was so important to keep a record of points in order to go to YAD. The meeting was then adjourned and everyone went into the hall to skate or to just sit and talk.

I would like to point out what a great jab Pat and Curtis Young, our youth leaders, are doing and I am looking forward to working with them, for our goals can only be accomplished when we work together as one.

At our next meeting we will discuss a skating party, and more about our dance marathon.

Our meetings are on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. Please plan to join us Wednesday, Feb. 15th.

Sonny's mother, Patsy Kalina Tydlacka, reigned as SPJST State Queen in 1970, with Teddy Dusek.

His other relatives who proudly share the family tree include grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Julius Kalina, Jr., and Mrs. Leona Tydlacka, plus great-grandmother Mrs. Millie Kalina.

Sonny and his parents hold their membership at Lodge 58, Hungerford, as well as his grandparents, the Julius Kalinas; where Sister Pauline Kalina is an active youth leader and also serves as assistant District VI youth counselor.

(Editor's Note: The above information and picture pretty well give us an example of what our Youth Department does for our SPJST Society. Dear Readers, Sunday, Jan. 29th we held our monthly meeting , with 19 members attending.

It was decided to have a Valentine party Feb. 19th, beginning at 3 p.m. The mother lodge will celebrate their anniversary March 12th and we have been asked to

put on a program for this special day.

When the meeting ended, we celebrated the December and January birthdays. After the meeting we made Valentine favors to be sent to the Children's Hospital.

We also had a guest speaker, Mr. Hart, who showed films on "The Care of the Heart" and talked to us on first aid.

The meeting was adjourned and we held a birthday party for five of our members who had birthdays in January.

18 LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was called to order by our president, Laurie Krajca,,at the Ennis Rolling Lion Skating Rink.

Our youth leader, Linda Trojacek, called the roll. There were many present.

Before and after the meeting we were skating. Everyone had fun.

We played tag, shoot the duck and racing. After everyone was tired, we took a refreshment break. We had cookies and Kool-Aid Then we cooled off, we went skating again. Everyone got blisters, but otherwise, we had a lot of fun.

There were 13 members and two visitors at our monthly meeting;

visitors were Calvin and Dennis Schmedhorst.

Brother Hasek was a native of Kingsville, born Aug. 10th, 1927. He was admitted to Lodge No. 56 SPJST on Sept. 8th, 1943. He was reared and educated in Corpus Christi. He was a graduate of Corpus Christi High School. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. For the past 9 years he had lived in Driscoll. He was associated with Industrial Program.

Survivors include his wife, of Driscoll; a daughter, Tina Marie Hasek, of Driscoll; three sons, Tony Blake Hasek of Driscoll, Steve Hasek and John Hasek, both of Corpus Christi; a step-daughter, Mrs. Bennie Carrol Orum of Uvalde; his mother, Mrs. Annie Hasek of Corpus Christi; two sisters, Virgina Veit of Houston, and Mrs. Marie M. Miller of Corpus Christi; a brother, Charles A. Hasek of Corpus Christi; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Chapel at 10 a.m.. Jan. 25th and at S. S. Cyril and Methodius Church.

Burial followed in Seaside Memorial Park.

Brother Marek died in a Temple hospital late Saturday, Jan. 14th. following a long illness.

Brother Marek was born in the Barclay community and later moved to the Zabcikville area. He was a member of the Ocker Brethren Church and served as an elder for more than 25 years. He was also active in community affairs.

Survivors include two sons, Johnny E. Marek and Edward D. Marek, both of TeMple; one daughter, Mrs. Edward Klinkovsky of Brenham; one brother, Ladis F. Marek of Houston; one sister, Mrs. Matilda Juren of Fort Worth; and four grandchildren.

INTEREST TELEPHONE SOLICITATION Consumers wanting limits on telephone solicitations, take heart — support may be on the way, says Claudia Kerbel, consumer information specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

Recommendations to help protect the citizen's privacy are now under study — with automated dialing devices getting special attention, Ms. Kerbel says.

Each device is capable of calling more than 1,000 telephone numbers per day — on either a random or pre-selected basis.

Some machines play a recorded message up to six minutes in length.

"Business organizations using these machines reach thousands of consumers — directly and inexpensively," the specialist continues.

Recommendations to limit telephone solicitations were submitted by the Office of Consumer Affairs and they are now under study by the Federal Communications Commission.

Specifically, the Office of Consumer Affairs recommended that FCC study the feasibility of adopting seven measures relating to automated dialing devices and other telephone soliciters.

These measures would: —Require that telephone subscribers have an opportunity, at least annually, to place their names on lists of persons who would be protected from solicitation.

—Require that firms which employ this form of advertising bear the cost for compiling and maintaining these lists.

—Establish penalties for violators — with fines for repeated violators.

—Require solicitations that use automated dialing devices and recorded messages to begin with the statement, "This is a recorded message."

—Limit taped messages to one minute in areas where placing the telephone receiver on the cradle „onnect an incom-

Establish limits on the hours during which telephone solicitations would be permitted.

—Determine the effect that telephone solicitations have on the telephone system — so that fees paid by soliciters reflect actual cost.

FOOD FADS ARE SOMETIMES FATAL Consult a variety of nutrition sources and avoid the sometimes fatal $600 million a year food fad trap, a foods and nutrition specialist says.

Consumers not only waste money following food fad practices, but they support harmful poor nutrition when they follow fads, Mary K. Sweeten, with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System, continues.

By consulting a variety of sources, each consumer can learn to recognize food fads and their possible danger.

Some Food Fads Fatal Some food fads are dangerous, contributing to malnutrition, unnecessary surgery and even death, she warns.

Thirty-one deaths thus far are the direct result of liquid protein diets, according to the Disease Control Center in Atlanta, Ga. Also, taking massive doses of vitamin A can cause symptoms like those of a .brain tumor — and that might lead to unnecessary surgery.

Results of following other food fads are less serious, but even these encourage irrational nutrition practices that might be acting as poor substitutes for sound nutrition habits.

Food Fads Start with Fallacies A food fad is a mis-conception that people accept as fact, Mrs. Sweeten says.

Two sources of these mis-conceptions are the food fallacy and food quacks, she adds.

False or mistaken ideas about foods and nutrition are termed food fallacy.

For example, the idea that adults do not need milk is a fallacy.

Adults do need milk, milk products or other sources of calcium to keep strong bones.

In addition, a food quack is one who has little or no foundation in

foods and nutrition but who pretends to have knowledge and skill in the field.

These quacks take facts out of contex and draw the wrong conclusion. They fail to report the total facts, she explains.

For example, the quack might say that phytates in cereals, or oxalates in spinach or chocolate, tie up calcium; therefore, they say, they are 'bad and should be avoided.

In truth it would take vast amounts of these substances at one time to make a significant difference in the amount of calcium absorbed, Mrs. Sweeten points out.

There are two types of food quacks — those who report about nutrition accidentally and those who report misinformation about nutrition intentionally, she says.

The accidental quacks are those such as a scientist with a bias, scientists who misinterpret research of others, misinformed educators, health care personnel who are skilled only in their own field, and well-meaning friends, relatives and associates.

These people do not really mean to spread misinformation.

On the other hand, some people spread misinformation intentionally.

Some of these quacks are commercial publications that distort facts, self-instructed diet consultants working in specialty shops, advertizers and !food promoters, and indiscriminate publishers and broadcasters, the specialist says.

Public Awareness Needed To combat misinformation sources, nutritionists recommend that consumers try to keep abreast of as much information about food as they can. Just knowing about the many different viewpoints on food issues is a giant step toward sound nutrition, Mrs. Sweeten emphasizes.

Mrs. Sweeten suggests several nutrition information resources-"List of Nutrition References and Book Reviews" compiled by the Chicago Nutrition Association may be purchased from the American Medical Association, 535 N. Dearborn St., Chicago, Ill 60610.

—The American Dietetic Assn. offers assistance in determining the reliability of a reference. Their address is ADA, 420 N. Michigan

—Various federal agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration, and the United States Dept. of Agriculture can also be of help.

—"The Journal of Nutrition Education" reviews many nutrition books. This reference is available at local libraries.

—Locally, contact dietitians, some home economists, nutritionists or County Extension Agents (home economics) for information on resources reliability.

HOW TO SELECT LAWYER SERVICE When selecting a lawyer, investigate, get recommendations and interview to find the lawyer that provides the needed services, advises Claudia Kerbel, consumer information specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, The Texas A&M University System.

Do some investigating — don't be satisfied with "potluck" out of the telephone directory.

Get recommendations from a trusted friend or another lawyer.

Talk to people who might know lawyers that specialize in particular cases.

For example, consult a marriage counselor for referral to a divorce lawyer, a real estate agent for an attorney, experienced with deeds, or a bank officer for a lawyer to handle a will, suggests Ms. Kerbel.

Another source of information is the Lawyer Referral Service — a free public service of the State Bar of Texas. (Lawyer Referral Service toll-free number is 800-252-9690.( The Lawyer Referral Service provides names of licensed attorneys according to their specialty — divorce, criminal, bankruptcy, juvenile, real estate, and others.

These lawyers -- though not screened by experience or qualifications — are all licensed and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.

After gathering two or three names, interview each lawyer.

Many lawyers will give an initial consultation free or at a nominal fee, the specialist continues.

During the interview, be sure to ask: —about their experience with particular cases and their expertise in the subject, —whether oth4 lawyers will be

TIME TO ADD SHADE' TREES If you longed for more shade in your yard last summer, now is the time to take some action., says Everett Janne, landscape horticulturist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

Most folks think of spring as the proper tree planting time, but fall and winter planting offers distinct advantages. The root systems of winter-planted trees :develop and become well established before top growth starts in the spring. However, use only containerl-grown or balled-and-burlapped trees for fall planting. Bareroot trees are still not completely dormant and should not be planted until January and February.

Choose trees that are well adapted to your area, emphasizes Janne.

He cautions against planting socalled "fast growing trees" as most of these are brittle and shortlived or have some other characteristic that makes them less than desirable for landscape planting.

The horticulturist offers these tree planting guidelines: —Dig the tree pit large enough to allow at least 6 inches clearance on all sides. A good rule of thumb is to make the pit 1 1/2 times greater in diameter than the root ball.

—Make the pit only as deep as the root ball. This allows the root ball to rest on undisturbed soil and reduces settling.

—Plant the tree the same depth as it was grown in the Nursery.
