COMMENTS Too often we stress the need for improved public relations, how ever, we stress too little on human relations, a term we hear almost every day and which begins with the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!" Doing unto otheri . . . is a good start if there is just a little consideration and common sense brotherhood, which sets an example — and which is transmitted to others and adds depth to our public image which{ all the publicity in the world cannot create if it is not really there in the first place, alienated by any act or acts that serve to corrode its progress as a destructive acid and which paralyzes and prevents normal growth. Working for the good and benefit of the whole (as in our case SPJST), and feeling vitality in our veins rather than letting anything unhealthy dissipate our energy is very much desired in all cases. Our energy must be so channelled constructively without distortion of facts or used, to conform to any single individual's plan or personal glory. A person in the public eye, holding a responsible position, must always remember that what they do or act like as individuals always reflects on the office and/ or position they hold and the organization they represent; that is also a definite part of public relations. * * We are traveling down the road into 1978; looking ahead through our clear windshield, literally speaking, and we really do not know what all lies ahead of us. It is a very good time to glance into the rearview mirror also and see, plus give thought to, what is behind and what 1977 and the past has taught us and what it was like; in doing so, we may be able to chart our future course even more wisely from lessons learned.

Our SPJST Society has fared well thus far, however; we have.had some adverse experiences befall

Wednesday, January 11, 1978 us. For example, we went through bad times when the property our Society had in the Rio Grande Valley was sold and we lost quite a sum of money in that transaction, then we invested in some flour mill and elevator stock and did not fare too well on that.

Next, we bought the Professional Building in Temple in 1952 and invested about $300,000 in it. The architect predicted at that time that it would last about 25 years, and it just about did. SL SecretaryTreasurer Mikeska had some headaches with it in the last few years and was glad to be able to sell it.

Of course, we have to remember that our SL had it for a home office for almost 20 years — from 1952 to 1971 — for which time our Society would have had to be renting quarters for our Main office.

These happenings were all done when all of us were much younger not as active as now, however, even though it was before our time, it is a good policy to let the past "nudge" our conscience once in a while. By looking into the past we also see how times have changed.

When Lodge No. 88, Houston built their new two-story home at 1140 Robbie Street, during the depression era, the lodge borrowed a sum! of money from the SL (with the memberships' certificates as collateral); the amount was not over $30,000 (probably $15,000), my information and memory are sketchy. My father used to say that they would never 'be able to pay the debt off. World War II came along, prosperity improved, and it was paid off in the early 40s.

More recently Lodge 88 again expanded and their home is now paid for. The building completion cost about $250,000 at that time.

Since then a number of halls have been built and were financed by our SPJST through the SL office.

When mentioning times changing, just consider that soon we will be dedicating three new lodge homes — Centerville, Corpus Christi, and Longview. These homes constitute loans into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, in fact nearly a million! Our Society will probably hiave about two million dollars in lodge loans, helping our lodges. The true figures would have to be obtained from Brother Mikeska. Yes, times have changed and are still

changing!

NEWSBRIEFS Brother Otto Mikeska„ of Houston, died suddenly at his farm at Warrenton. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 1978 at the Houston Brethren Church, and at 2:30 at the Nelsonville Brethren Church, with burial in the Nelsonville Brethren Church Cemetery. Brother Mikeska was the husband of District V Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska.

He was a member of Lodge 88.

• * Eddie E. Schiller, 77, died Monday, Jan. 2nd in Houston. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Houston Brethren Church, with the Rev. Lawrence Junek and the Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating. Interment was in Forest Park West, Houston. Brother Schiller was a member of Lodge No. 88, Houston. * * The date for the official chartering of Lodge 187 "Spirit of Round Rock" in Round Rock has been set for Sunday, Feb. 12th, 1978. The ceremonies and other events are scheduled to take place at Lodge No. 18 in Elgin, whose membership recently voted to let Lodge 187 use their facilities for this event. This was a very fraternal gesture on their part. Further details will be forthcoming after a planning meeting between officers of Lodge 187 and the president of the Su—NAM preme Lodge. * * The tentative date for the dedication of the new lodge home of Lodge 1 Centerville, has been set for Sunday, Feb. 19th, 1978 at the new hall on Hwy. 75, just north of Centerville. After the date is finalized and other details worked out, that information will be 'published in the Vestalk.

MST HISTORY A Request

Dear Members: As part of the SPJST History that I am compiling, I think it would be only appropriate to include a short chapter on those members of the SPJST who gave their lives in WW I, WWII, Viet Nam Conflict, and the Korean Conflict. We have a complete list of all those from World Wars I and II. We have also recorded the names of those who made the supreme sacrifice in Viet Nam up to and through Sp-4 Arnold Kulhanek of Lodge 1, Fayetteville, who was killed on 10 June 1970. We do not have any information on anyone having been killed in that conflict from the SPJST after that date, however, since the pull-out of our forces in Viet Nam came a few years later, I would appreciate knowing the names of those persons whose lives were lost in Viet Nam after Brother Kulhanek.

Please furnish me with the complete name, date of birth, and date of death, and what lodge they belonged to.

In order to make the picture complete, I would also like to list the names of those whose lives were lost in the Korean Conflict.

We have no record of these persons here, although I can't help but feel that the SPJST did have some losses in that conflict. I am requesting the same information on these persons that I am on those in Viet Nam, as stated above.

Your cooperation would be appreciated. We would then have this information on all four major encounters that the U. S. (SPJST) was involved in.

VESTNIK SCENES FROM THE CHRISTMAS PARTY AT LODGE NO. 9, SNOOK DECEMBER 11, 1977

LODGE NO. 9, SNOOK Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 9 of Snook held its monthly meeting Dec. llth, at 4 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President El R. Jakubik, followed by the pledge of allegiance.

After roll call of officers, the minutes were read and approved.

The various committee reports were given, followed by the installation of our officers for the corning year.

We are very happy to report that we had a very good turnout for the meeting and for the activities which followed. And we hope that our members will continue to come out in this way. I think we all enjoyed the fellowship very much.

After our meeting we enjoyed a box supper with so much good food.

Let's try that again, OK? The supper was topped off by a Christmas program by our youth club. They did a fine job reciting their parts and in leading the whole group in singing carols.

Finally, Santa must have heard all our singing and dropped in for a visit. The young and not-soyoung anymore alike enjoyed Santa's visit. He had plenty of goodies to pass out for the youngsters.

Our next meeting was scheduled for Jan. 4th, at 7:30 p.m. The youth club was to meet at 6:30 p.m. preceding the regular lodge meeting.

Let us continue attending our meetings and carry out the feeling of good will and fellowship that went with Christmas right on through the new year.

That was a very nice touch, youth club, making your own decorations for the lodge's Christmas tree.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: Our New Year's Eve dance turned out great; best we ever had!

Thanks to all members who have done so much to make our New Year's celebration such a great success. It was so much work done there by so many people. I am not going to name anyone in this report because I am afraid I may leave someone out. Thanks for the job well done.

and everyone had a good time.

The monthly meeting which was scheduled for Jan. 9th, 1978 has been reset for the date of Jan. 22nd at 2 p.m. The reason for the change in time was so all the newly-elected officers of Lodge 74 could be present to be installed.

James McCullough, our first vice president, could not be present on Jan. 9th.

At our last meeting a discussion was brought up for a vote whether the meeting should be changed from the second Monday of the

we underestimated ourselves. However, this did give us all a chance to enjoy some of the entertainment offered. A group of us closed our shop after cleaning up and took off down the street singing Christmas carols. This was really a treat for us because we never have time to join in the fun on these functions. We are usually kept busy until closing time. Sister Huepers led us in caroling, as the old saying goes: we had a ball!

Dear Members: The regular meeting of Lodge 184 Moulton was held Wednesday, Dec. 14th, at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge home. There were 41 members and 3 guests present.

The president convened the meeting by leading the group in saying the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

A minute of silence was held for our departed Sister Komila Mraz who died on Nov. 28th, 197'7 at her home.

It has been decided to have a Sponsors Dance Friday, Feb. 3rd. I will give you more details later.

A motion was made and passed to have the parking lot, graveled, this will be done as soon as possible.

Billy Smetanka will check on buying more chairs and tables for the lodge.

Brother Ben Zabcik gave a report on the Rules and Regulations and the members voted on some of the changes. At the next meeting the members will vote on whether or not to allow blue jeans at the dances, so please come to the January meeting and vote, because if you don't put in your 2 cents worth, and it is not voted your way, you cannot complain about it.

There was a vote about the meeting being changed, but they will remain on the second Wednesday of each month, at 7:30 p.m.

The Christmas party and program turned out just great; there was a lot of good food and a lot of good people to enjoy it. I am sure everyone had a good time.

TERM END REPORT FROM SPRING BRANCH COLLEGE

On Dec. 15th, 1977, the Czech class of Spring Branch completed its third term of 14 weeks. The interest was evident with all the "Czech" things we did. Of first importance, four students have sent in their applications for study at Charles University in Prague. This summer study program should prove to be invaluable to the selected fortunate students.

Our 4th term of Czech at Spring Branch is scheduled to start Jan. 19th, 1978. Many are anticipating the term and using our newly purchased textbook "Czech for English Speaking Students." Our plans include tapes of reading material based on subject matter located in the text.

Should anyone in the vicinity of Memorial High in Spring Branch (Houston, Texas), be interested in studying with us, please register and be among friends. You will be most welcome.

THE. U. OF H. CZECH CLASS WANTS YOU! The University of Houston Czech Student Club is in full swing for the 1977-78 school year. Harvey Fajkus has consented, to stay on as presicleLt and Eugene Vecera will become vice president. The UHCC will soon begin meeting in the Youth Room at SPJST

Lodge No. 88 in Houston on the first Monday night of each month.

Some of the activities being planned are a Christmas party, dancing lessons, publishing a student newspaper, maintaining a booth at the Czech Fest in Rosenberg, participation in the statewide meeting of Czech students and teachers at Praha and sending a group of students to Czechoslovakia for six weeks in the summer.

Etienne Bellay has generously consented to edit a student newspaper which will be named "The Czech List." It will contain information concerning club activities as well as news items from the class reporters. It will also include poetry, plays, or fiction written in Czech by the students.

One of the major ways of recruiting new students seems to be through parties, so the UHCO planned a Christmas party to be held at the end of exam week.

The club provided the refreshments and invited anyone interested in having a good time to attend. Lillian Young was to teach the guests how to dance the polka and other Czech dances. A date, time and place for the party will be decided upon in the immediate future. Marie Kanova, well-known Czech artist, has agreed to have the students come to her studio at some future date.

A fund raising effort is about to get underway in the form of Czech T shirts and buttons featuring a picture of a foaming beer mug and the wards "99% Czech" written beneath the picture. These will be sold by the club to anyone wishing to purchase one.

Charles Whitmer will soon begin working on the activities to be presented by the UHCC at the statewide meeting of Czech students to be held in Praha this year. Last year, the UHCC presented a play in Czech which was very well received at the meeting in Taylor.

The playwrite, Etiemme Bellay, has again been asked to compose an original script which will be presented this year.

The annual Czech Fest in Rosenberg will find the UHCC being represented by a booth which will accept donations for the UHCC T shirts and buttons. Last year, the booth was a big success and the students are looking forward to an even bigger turnout this year.

Woody Smith have begun making plans for the Univ. of Texas to send 7 Univ. of Houston Czech students to Czechoslovakia this summer.

Clarice O'Hare went last year and brought back many beautiful pictures and slides as well as interesting stories and wonderful memories. The students will attend Charles University and take many field trips to the surrounding countryside, towns, and villages.

The students are in Czechoslovakia for approximately six weeks and when they return home they have a better command of the Czech language than when they left.

Clarice is helping make the plans for the U. of H. students' trip.

Dr. Teofil Halama is the faculty advisor to the UHCC and is a great asset to the teaching program at the University of Houston. He spends countless hours helping students to acquire his native language in a way that only a native speaker of Ctech can do. He also teaches his students the proud heritage and culture of the Czechoslovakian people. He has also been instrumental in getting the SPJST Supreme Lodge to sponsor the UHCC. The UHCC would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to SPJST Lodge 88 for its continuing support and its generosity in allowing the club to meet at the lodge. Numerous students took part in the Czech Day festivities at the lodge.

Twenty tickets were purchased for students to attend the Broln Folk Ballet and the Lucnica Ballet ensemble. The U. of H. was the proud host for the National Czechoslovakian basketball team.

The University of Houston offers numerous courses in Czech. This past semester there were two first year Czech classes and one second year class with a total of 41 students. The University also offered one non-credit class in Czech in its Sundry School program. Petitions for a third year course have been signed by 30 students in the hope of developing the course into an undergraduate program in the near future, but it will be only through increased enrollment and support that the 3rd and 4th year courses are added.

The administration is also considering opening a second year course at night.

Registration for the spring 1978 semester took place on Jan. 5 and 6. The courses being offered this spring are: CZE 132 — First Year Czech 3122 311 CO 8:30 - 10 a.m.

A course in conversational Czech will be offered in the U. of H. Sundry School this spring. Registration for this eight-week course will take place between Jan. 30 and Feb. 6th in the Campus Activities Center. Anyone wishing to attend the class should bring $23 in cash to register. The class will be held on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. with the 1st class being held Feb. 21st.

Mary Newell Pape Secretary, UHCC — smisr — CZECH CLUB ACTIVITIES AT ALVIN C. C. Each year Alvin Community College sponsors an Activities Day in which communities of the surrounding area participate. It is during this time that various school organizations make their operating funds.

During past years the Czech Club, by its diligent effort, has earned enough to support a program of scholarships for qualified students of Czech lineage to continue college studies. Each scholarship is for $150.

The new AOC campus is incomplete to date, but a great percentage of the work has been accomplished. Finally, the entire enrollment will be housed under one roof, so to speak. Due to incompletion of construction, this year's School Day resolved itself into a "Flea Market" masterplan. The new slate of Czech Club officers decided on a kolace a kavu (kolache and coffee) sale in addition to a flea market. President Annie Chovanec, Vice President Eleanore Stuksa, and Treasurer Joe Prihoda, announced an unbelievable high clear-profit earnings, however, the sales of certain articles (to be excluded from IRS reports) must be used only in a non-profit way.

Though these government restric-

tions prevent free spending of our monies, we do have ample funds for many scholarships to come. Our own club regulations do not permit scholarships for our own Conversational Ozech Class. These club funds are entirely separate from funds promoting Czech studies by SPJST and Farmers Mutual Protective Assn. which go directly to ACC. We are indeed proud of the hardworking class which has completed its seventh term of study, headed by such an energetic slate of officers.

For the new term, beginning Feb. 7th, 1978, we have purchased textbooks from Chicago. Each student will be issued a text unless he desires to purchase one on his own. Many students have tape recorders, so master recordings will be made of text subject matter.

This should warrant an in-between class periods study and hearing spoken Ozech during the week.

The entire class is anticipating the eighth term of study. It again expects to lead all other such classes in numbers enrolled. Ours is an unusual class. It is more like a Study Czech Family Unit!

FEATURES A SPEECH DELIVERED AT THE TEXAS FRATERNAL CONGRESS CONVENTION IN AUSTIN BY REP. BRO. JOE A. HUBENAK We are well into the decade of the 1970s and I firmly believe it is a very appropriate time to reflect on where we have been in the past ten years and where we will go in the next ten. It is a time for reevaluation on an individual, collective, even a national basis.

In 1977, we live in a world entirely different from that of 1967. Americans have walked on the surface of the moon on several different occasions. Think how that statement would have sounded just over a decade ago. It makes us wonder what the next ten years have in store.

The era of the late 1960s was an important one for every American.

Our nation was challenged on every front. We have ended that decade threatened by dissention from

JOE. A. HUBENAK (Member of Lodge 81, Woodville) within. During these ten years, crime has risen six times faster than the population. We have seen the flag of our nation burned on our streets and our citizens call for victory by our enemies. We have seen immorality peddled as sophistication and a drug world substituted for the real world. We have seen a Minority act and sound like a majority because the majority was silent and would not respond.

Yes, we are living in a country today that is quite different from the one that we were taught to love.

Parents have successfully defended in court their children's right to ignore the flag salute. Faculties and student bodies have found it distasteful, to publicly take an oath of loyalty to their country and the United States Military Academy litas found it necessary to place a sign beside its parade grounds at West Point reminding spectators that it is customary for men to remove their hats at the passing of the banner that was once unashamedly referred to as "Old Glory."

What has happened? I think we have changed from an exporting country to an importing country. I do not mean that we have let the world drain all of our gold away, although that is bad enough. I do not mean an imbalance of trade, as threatening as that may be. I mean that we have been importing, instead of exporting, ideas. The U.S. was once the greatest exporter of ideas the world has ever known.

We created and sold abroad the idea of individual dignity, respon-

V1tiSTNfK sibility, and freedom. We created and sold the idea of government of the people, by the people, and for the people — an idea that is still being bought today. We exported the idea of freedom of worship, the idea of unfettered press, the idea that those who are taxed should be represented. Truly it has been a decade of change.

But what about the future? Is there a bright light ahead for the world — for our country — for our state? My friends, as always our country is one of opportunity. The future is just as bright as we will allow it to be.

The great challenge of this decade is to return to an orderly society — a society in which the citizens have pride in their country and a constructive attitude toward the future. This challenge cannot be legislated. It can only be met through individual effort on the part of every concerned citizen. I believe this single challenge can be broken down into five separate challenges. I have tried to cata logue these challenges and I would like to discuss them with you for a moment, along with what you and I as dedicated citizens, can do to meet these challenges.

1. The Challenge of Law and Order wil be high on the list of priorities. It will be a challenge of civil obedience as opposed to the rash of civil disobedience of the passing decade. I've been talking with you for four or, five minutes. During that time there have been one murder, two burglaries and three rapes committed in the U.S. These acts, along with far more numerous, but lesser crimes, involve two subjects: the criminal and the victim. Today in the U.S., society and the courts appear to be pre-occupied with the protection of the criminal's rights. But there should be a greater concern for the rights of the other party involved — the victim . . . the law abiding person who suffers at the hands of the criminal. In the past five years the population of the U.S. has risen over eight percent, and in the past five years, according to the FBI, the incidence of major crime in America has gone up 40 percent.

This is a staggering statistic.

We would be foolish to think that the rapid increase in crime — that the accepted use of violence as a tool of political persuasion —

that the flagrant disrespect for laws and law enforcement officers — that all this is just an accident, much more than an accident, it is the product of the neglect of the average American citizen; it is the product of the silent American who has let violence and lawlessness become commonplace.

More than reversals of Supreme Court decisions, more than increases in the number of law enforcement officials, what is needed to meet the challenge of law and order is a conscious effort on the part of every American to respect and obey the laws of our land. We must restore respect for those who enforce our laws and we must firmly convince those who would use violence that to do so would be a most unwise choice.

2. The Challenge of Environmental Control is another "must" issue in this decade. We presently have the technical ability to smother ourselves in our waste. In many cases we are rapidly approaching the point of self destruction, but just as we have the capability of destroying ourselves in a flood of pollutants, we also have the capability of producing a nation of clean air, clean water, with abundant living space for everyone. The challenge is not in finding ways to accomplish these tasks. We have this ability. The challenge is to use this ability.

If we are going to continue to in crease our production of food and fiber in this country over the years, we are going to have to come up with new and better ways of production.

And this statement is especially true to those of you in the vegetable industry. You are definitely where the action is today in agriculture.

Each year research is discovering ways to increase your acreage yield using new techniques. Your industry is probably the foremost leader in the use of solar energy in agriculture.

What I am trying to say is that the potential for increased production is definitely here. Last year, cash receipts from vegetables were $200 million. I look for that figure to double by 1980, but only if the incentive to produce continues, and I believe it will.

There are five items that I think Texas agriculture is definitely go-

Wednesday, January 11, 1978 ing to need in the 21st Century to keep this incentive to produce: 1.Qualified leaders 2. More markets — domestic and foreign 3. Research 4. Taxation of Agricultural Lands on production basis 5. Farm credit And also keeping and bringing youth back to the farm. These are but a few of the issues that face agriculture today.

But I think of no point more important than to educate all Americans to the fact that we are all in this together.

We had all better realize that our nation's very economic survival depends on the support and help we give the nation's farmers and ranchers — not ten years from now but today.

Tomorrow America could wake up hungry. In the endless cycle of raising America's food, harvest is always followed by preparation for another crop. Whether this was a good year or`a bad year, the farmer must be an eternal optimist and expect next, year to be better. The secret of our success is that he still has an incentive to remain the world's most efficient supplier of food.

His success is all measured by his harvest. If his harvest, and that of 2.8 million other farmers, is good, then America eats well. If the incentive to work long hours, conserve the soil, take chances, go in debt, keep up with modern methods and most of all, the income, isn't there — then we all will fail with him.

3. The Challenge of Living in a World of Mass Communication. Today 97 percent of American homes have television sets. Each of these sets is on an average of six hours a day, I don't think we can discount this as a minor social phenomena, no one knows exactly the impact television is having on us, but estimates are that the impact is more than we can imagine.

We are faced with determining the impact of television violence on the lives of our children. We are faced with the political implications of network newscasters who command an audience of over 40 million viewers each evening. We are faced with deciding if we will elect 'our public officials on the basis of their television appearance

or on the basis of their knowledge and leadership ability and dedication. TV debates — what does it prove if people don't understand.

These are the challenges of today and will become even more important as the influence of mass electronic communication grows. To meet this challenge we must have responsibility on the part of those who control the media and understanding on the part of those who receive the media output.

4. The Challenge of 20th Century Democracy is the fourth of our challenges for the late 70s.

This is the challenge of making our government more responsible to the needs of every citizen.

In our rapidly moving world we need a system of government which can keep pace and which will be effective. We need a government that can provide needed services without taxing the citizens beyond acceptable limits.

Another area of concern is in the representative structure of the government -- and this really concerns me. We have been told that in the future one man, must represent one vote. In theory that is an excellent mandate. In reality it leaves without effective representation vast areas of our state and nation which are not so densely settled as the cities. It means that our rural areas, which supply the food and raw materials on which our economy thrives, will be unequally represented.

5. The Challenge of Patriotism.

In short, we have a great responsibility in restoring unity to our nation. In the past ten years patriotism, as a concept, has declined in value. Love for one's nation has become an archaic sentiment. We might, do well to take note of the fact that at the same time this decline was taking place, there was a great increase in crime, violence, and immorality in every area of the nation. A magazine recently made a survey of school history books issued before 1920 compared with those issued since. Nathan Hale's statement, "I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country," was in 11 of the old texts, but in only one of the new ones.

Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death!" was in 12 of the 14 earlier texts and in only two of 45 recently published ones.

John Paul Jones' "I have not, yet begun to fight!" is in nine bf the old books, but in none of the new ones.

It is much better to give hope and strength and courage, than money. The best help is not to bear the troubles of others for them, but to inspire them with courage and energy to bear their own burdens for themselves, and meet with the difficulties of life bravely, and together we can do this.

Together we can continue to 'build a nation where faith in God guides man in his conquest of the problems that trouble us, where citizens argue before the Supreme Court on behalf of the spirit of the writers of our Constitution, where our children are taught to separate church and state, and not God and man.

Together we can build a nation where the "old" American system of free enterprise is once again given the chance to produce as it has done in raising our country to the pinnacle of economic productivity. Where economic improvement has been greatest, man has been free to follow his dream of making a personal fortune by doing something never done before —or by doing it better. We must return to this philosophy, for only then can our system of free enterprise continue to grow and prosper through the creative genius which makes maximum progress possible.

My friends, patriotism is not an outmoded concept, it is the thread of unity which binds a nation together, without it we have little hope for the future.

There is much to be proud of in this great and powerful nation.

No where else is there so much prosperity — even for the citizen with the lowest income. No where else is there such opportunity for everyone — regardless of his race or background. We have many good reasons to be patriotic. What is needed is an effort directed at promoting the good news about our nation to counteract the popular self-criticism of the 60s.

A wise man once wrote: "My country, right or wrong; when wrong to make it right, when right to keep it right." I hope these will be the guiding words of the 70s and 80s.

(Continued from page 15) I have tried to detail what I believe are our great challenges of this decade. As I said before, these challenges cannot be legislatect.

They must be met through the effort, concern and desire of every individual, American.

The years ahead will be trying years just as the years past have been. We will never solve all our problems. We never have. But with a conscious rededication on the part of each citizen, we can maintain the greatest civilization in human history.

When I consider all of this, I am reminded of a story which appears in James Madison's account of the Constitutional Convention of 1787.

On the last day of the convention, just before the members signed that document which was to become our Constitution, Benjamin Franklin arose to say a few words.

He was old and tired but he made it to his feet without any help. He said that he had had troublesome doubts from time to time during that long summer of work and worry and debate.

And he had often looked at a certain painting which hung above the presiding officer's chair. It was a large picture of the sun and he said that he had often wondered if it was a rising sun or a setting sun. He hadn't made up his mind until that day, but he said, after looking back on the labors of that convention and after reading the final version of the proposed Constitution, he had come to a conclusion. He said that he was satisfied that it was a rising sun and that the brightest part of the day was still in the future.

My friends, when I look at the record of this nation and this state,

both past and present, I too believe that ours is a rising sun, and no matter how big the task before us, I believe that the brightest part of our day lies ahead!

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Readers, The youth club meeting was held Dec. 4th after the mother lodge meeting. We had a good attendance.

Dec. 2nd we had a bake sale at the Leroy Bank and we did real well. My thanks to all of you who donated baked goodies to our sale.

Dec. 14th we went to the West Rest Haven to put on a Christmas program and we brought gifts and refreshments. It was enjoyed by everyone.

Dec. 18th was our Christmas party, fried chicken supper with all the trimmings, Santa's visit, plus all the goodies and gifts which were enjoyed by all. I want to thank each of you for helping me with the holiday projects, the program and all the nice gifts I received; they were very nice and I can use them.

In the month of December we were quite busy. We had planned to work on our scrapbook and other projects so remember to come out on Friday nights and also attend your club meetings; do not forget six meetings a year, also your dues if you did not pay them.

The youth club members and leaders wish you a happy New Year, 1978. We will be seeing you.

Brother Karasek was born in Cameron but lived most of his life in Burleson County. He was a member of this lodge and the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Funeral services were held Oct. 27th in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Frenstat with Rev. Isidore Rozycki officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Emilie; one son, Franklin of Caldwell; one daughter, Mrs. Lamhert (Frances) Baron of La Grange; five grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Lydia Spurny of Boling.

Mr. Coufal had lived most of his life in Burleson County. He moved to Bryan in 1967. He was a member of this lodge and the Cooks Point Brethren Church.

Resolution Committee Melvin Skrabanek Stanley Mrnustik Betty Suehs - SPJST -EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi, in behalf of our entire membership wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, FRANK J. KUCEBA, age 67, of 1125 Tyler, Corpus Christi, who passed away at 2:34 a.m.

Dec. 27th, 1977 in a local hospital after a sudden illness.

Brother Kucera was a native of Caldwell born June 18th, 1910 and was reared and educated in Penelope. He moved to Corpus Christi in 1934. He joined local Lodge No. 56 on Oct. 26th, 1935.

Brother Kucera was a member, of the local American Sokol Unit since 1934, a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles No. 2249, member of the Bill Roper American Legion Post 364, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2465.

He owned and operated the Alamo Bar and farmed southwest of the city.

Funeral services were held Dec. 29th, at 10 a.m. at the Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Chapel, with his nephew Rev. Eddie Kucera of Houston officiating. Burial followed in Seaside Memorial Park, with the American Legion Post No. 364 presenting the military ceremony and burial was under the direction of Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Julia K. Kucera, of Corpus Christi; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Joyce Kucera of Houston; and a granddaughter, Tiffiney Kucera

of Houston.

Mrs. Burton was born in Bell County and lived in the Rosebud area since age 12. She was a member of the Cedar Springs Baptist Church and the Cedar Grove Home Demonstration Club.

Survivors are a son, Randolph Burton of Rosebud; daughters, Mrs. Arlis Patzke of Waco, Mrs. Edward Petter of Robinson and Mrs. Alex Baez of Rosebud; a brother, Robert Marek, Sr., of Rosebud; and seven grandchildren.
