FROM THE EDITOR The Christmas season is here and, no matter how hard a person tries to ignore it, you cannot help but be made aware of it! If nothing else, the hustle and bustle of the season, on all sides, makes one aware that it is here.

Saturday night, Dec. 10th, we attended the Lodge No. 66 Christmas party and met with our fellow fraternal friends; needless to say, the meal was befitting of the occasion and as only their cooks can prepare it. They and all concerned are to be complimented for a truly enjoyable evening, highlighted, of course, by Santa's appearance. We are delaying the pictures for a later issue when more space is available. After Santa arrived the youth, naturally, had the floor after having presented a nice youth program earlier.

• • Sunday, Dec, 11th was another very busy day that found us attending the annual 'meeting of Lodge No. 54, West at 2 p.m. and deputing at 3:30 to be at Lodge No. 35, Elk, to install the officers, see the enjoyable youth program and another gala Christmas meal and party of fraternal fellowship.

There again (which is usual for them), the cooks outdid themselves! At times like these the question must enter a person's mind — how do you adhere to a diet? Sister Charlotte Banik was MC and kept the youth program moving at a smooth pace.

All in all it was a nicely spent weekend among fraternal friends which is what our Society is all about.

• • Since it is the Christmas season yours truly feels that our readers

will not mind a mention of something personal that happens only once in 25 years.

It was the year of 1952; my wife, Maxine, and I had been going together for about three years and planned to get married, Maxine's birthday is Oct. 27th and mine is Oct. 29th, so we decided we should try to get married Oct. 28th and celebrate (kill three birds with one stone) all three occasions at one time. However, Oct. 28th, 1918, Is the date of the Declaration of Independence of Czechoslovakia in Philadelphia, Pa., and every year

Wednesday, December 21, 1977 Lodge No. 88, Houston., had a Czech play and celebration on the weekend nearest that date in those years. We reasoned that we could not possibly be absent since we were involved so we postponed our wedding to Nov. 8th. Why write all this? Well, Nov. 8th, 1977, was a Tuesday, 25 years later.

Our two sons, Terry and Edwin wanted us to have a celebration of some sort, however, we advised them that we would rather not do so and would rather play it "low key" as usual; besides Tuesday was a Vestnik day.

One Saturday afternoon in 01C°. tober, Terry asked me to go shopping in Waco and we "accidently" walked into a furniture store and he showed me a display cabinet for a home. He stated it would be nice for our silverware. The cabinet was made of beautiful hardwood. I smiled and said, no thank you, and we went home. Unknown to us, Terry and Bubba had been saving their money and Tuesday, Nov. 8th — you guessed it --- the cabinet and a beautiful piece of silverware arrived. Terry smiled and said, "You can't return the silverware, it is engraved."

With sons like Terry and Edwin, whom most of our members know, who wouldn't feel like it was Christmastime all year long! * * Once again the holidays of mankind's love for brotherhood are • knocking on our door and the *tent of the Ctiristinas tree brings back memories of happy childhood. The bells ring a message of Peace and Good Will, and our hearts are responding with deeds of love and expression of friendship.

The editor sincerely wishes you a multitude of happiness. May the spirit of this Joyous Season, together with life's most precious /blessings, be yours throughout Christmas and the entire new .

REMARKS DELIVERED BY VARIOUS INDIVIDUALS AT THE CHARTERING CEREMONIES OF NEW LODGE NO 185 "HILL COUNTRY," NEW BRAUNFELS, IN THE SAENGERHALLE, NEAR NEW BRAUNFELS ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1977 Brother Morris: Thank you, Bro. Hrabal!

Fellow members of the Supreme Lodge, officers and members of.

Lodge No. 185, friends and guests, .specially those from other lodges' and other districts. You surely must know that the purpose of our gathering here today is to charter our newest lodge in the SPJST, Lodge No. 185 "Hill Country," New Braunfels, here in Comal County.

It is with much pleasure that we do so and want to welcome this new lodge into the SPJST family of fraternal lodges.

A brief history of how Lodge 185 got its start and its progress appears in the program that each of you were handed as you came in the building today, so I will not repeat any of that information. However, the brief history as you see it in your program will be printed as it is in the Vestnik as a permanent historical record of Lodge No. 185. I will only make the observation that the earliest beginnings of this lodge must be credited to Bro. Joe Slavik, Sr., and the responsibility for "holding the lodge together" and the current progress must be credited to Bro. Gordon and Sis. Margaret Hrabal.

Bro. and Sis. Hrabal, having transferred into Lodge 185 from another lodge in another district after they moved to this area, worked very diligently against what appeared to be at times insurmountable odds. At times it must have appeared to them that there was nothing else left to do except give up and let fate take its inevitable course. They persevered, hOwever, and with the help of State Field

Presiding Officer Brother Gordon Hrabal called the assembly to order just before the formal chartering ceremonies took place.

Silas Smith and his wife Jeanette, and other officers of the Supreme Lodge in Temple, have managed to not only keep the lodge alive, but increased its membership. So, a tremendous debt of gratitude is owed to Gordon and Margaret Hrabal. There is always satisfaction from succeeding, but a special satisfaction is derived when you succeed against the odds that were faced by the Hrabals.

God bless them, and we thank you, Gordon and Margaret!

A Brief History of Lodge No. 185 `Hill Country" In the early part of 1976 Bro. Joe Slavik contacted the president of the Supreme Lodge to inquire whether the SPJST was interested in having a lodge in the New Braunfels area; that he was now retired and would be willing to help organize the new lodge. President Morris' answer was in the affirmative and referred Bro. Slavik to the Supreme Lodge Vice President, Bro. Hejny, who suggested that Bro. Slavik first become a member of the SPJST. His application was accepted and approved. He 'subsequently became a sales representative and was given a rate book and instructed on sales procedures by State Field 'Manager Bro. Silas Smith.

The lodge was organized May 14, 1976 in the. Catholic Church Cafeteria in Selma, with SFM Silas Smith presiding at the election of officers. At that organizational

Mrs. Haag used to be one of the famous Bohac sisters of Granger, who, with her sister, had a musical ensemble in years past, known as "The Bohac Sisters." meeting the membership voted to adopt the designation "Hill Country."

In the early days of the lodge, Bro. Joe Slavik, Sr., enrolled most of the new members, until his incapacity in the early part of 1977, when he became ill and subsequently resigned his position as president. There were other changes in some of the offices about the same time.

Brother and Sister Gordon Hrabal transferred into Lodge No. 185 in December 1976 and Bro. Hrabal subsequently became a sales representative. He has written most of the new members since that time, with the cooperation and assistance of SFM Silas Smith. The Supreme Lodge has been helpful in assisting Lodge 185 remain on the active 1Ist, particularly SL President Morris, who was in constant contact with Bro. Slavik before he became ill, and with the Hrabals and other officers since.

Some new sales representatives have begun to be active in SPJST sales in recent weeks and months.

And now, if I may, I would like to proceed with the formal portion of these installation ceremonies. I will address myself primarily to the members, both new and transfers into Lodge No. 188.

(Bro. Mikeska follows the Ritual and continues:) For your own welfare and for the welfare of our Society, I hope that you will fulfill the obligations that you have taken. Take pride in the SPJST and strive with us to become more perfect citizens and members.

At this point, I want to share with you an appropriate verse entitled Brotherhood

by Edwin Markham "There is a destiny that makes us brothers, No one goes his way alone; All that we send into the lives of others, Comes back into our own."

Fellow members, we want you to share with us the pride we feel in belonging to this dynamic and growing Society.

Some 80 years ago, it started with a handful of determined Czechs, and has now grown to over 54,000 members. The Society has weathered many hardships and changes.

Many similar organizations around us have come and gone, but the SPJST is still around . . . bigger, stronger and better with each passing year.

We ask that you strive with us

Brother Louis Hanus seen chatting with Brother L M. Amer. They are long-time acquaintances from Brother Armer's days in Houston. to keep alive the basic fraternal principles that have kept us strong.

Brothers and sisters, welcome, and please accept my wishes for much success.

In order that you may become more thoroughly acquainted with the basic principles of our Society, I now present you to our Supreme Lodge President, who will give you further instructions.

Bro. Morris: Thank you, Bro. Mikeska. I would now like to introduce the officers of Lodge No. 185 and ask them to ascend the stage, plus some district officials of District VII and other visiting dignitaries: District VII Director Bro. I would like to give recognition to two other members of the Supreme Lodge who are with us today visiting from adjoining districts (in addition to Bro. Bayer): from Granger, director of District II Bro. Henry Vitek, and from Houston, director of District V Bro. Louis Harms. We are glad to have both of you with us today.

I would also like to express our thanks to Vestnik Editor Bro. Rudy Sefcik, for his cooperation in helping us publicize this event in our official organ, the Vestnik, but I don't believe he is present. I might add also that all of the publicity regarding these chartering ceremonies was handled out of the president's office it the Supreme Lodge and sent to a good many members of the news media — newspapers, radio and television stations, and we wish at this time to acknowledge their fine cooperation and assistance.

It is always nice to see brothers and sisters from neighboring lodges and districts attend these chartering ceremonies and supporting their brothers and sisters in these new lodges. It shows that you care.

As most of you know, this new Lodge 185 in Comal County is in District VII of the SPJST, an area comprising 13 counties, from Comal on the northern boundaries of the

district to Nueces and Refugio near the coast — quite a large geographical area. Lodge 185 joins the other 13 lodges in District VII as the newest lodge in the district, and the 129 lodges throughout the state.

Brothers and sisters, by the solemn pledge that you have just taken with Bro. Mikeska, you are now entitled to all the rights and privileges (and I might add — responsibilities) of membership in the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas and in this new lodge, "Hill Country" No. 185.

Brother Mikeska has related to you the seriousness of the pledge that you have taken. I trust you will not take this pledge too lightly. The tenets upon which the SPJST was founded in 1897 were and are Benevolence, Humanity, and Brotherhood, and you should all bind yourselves to live according to these tenets and surely you will find it easier to overcome the day-to-day obstacles of your daily lives. I would also refer you to the color brochures which you found on the table as you came in, which graphically and pictorially depict the history and past of the SPJST since its beginning and organization in 1897. I would also like to remind you that we all owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our early-day pioneer forefathers, most or all of whom were of Czech extraction, who founded this wonderful organization back in 1897.

The oldest couple present, Broth,,, and Sister Adolph Mazac of Lodge': 133 San Antonio, and their daub ter and son-in-law, Viola_quid Frank Mazae, all of Lodge 133, San Antonio.

As time has moved inexorably forward, the mantle of leadership has fallen upon succeeding generations and younger shoulders, but I think they have held and carried the mantle of leadership very capably and that our forefathers would be very proud of what has happened to the SPJST that they left us.

I will now ask the entire assembly to stand and repeat after me: "Let us stand united . . . in the cause of humanity . . . let us stand united . .. in the cause of brotherhood . . . let us stand united .. . in the bonds of fellowship . . . and fraternal love . . . for all time to come': There is a tremendous potential in this area for the SPJST. The areas adjacent and along Interstate Hwy. 35 from the Red River in the North to Laredo constitute some of the fastest growing areas in the entire nation. You are sitting directly astride this major communications and transportation artery. You should do quite well in recruiting new members into your lodge, and with the cooperation of all your sales representatives and the members, good growth and progress is surely to come as a result.

The SPJST Society is a familyoriented organization, and of course, the family is the basic social unit of our American society. Everything that we do re-

Morris. volves around the family and that is exactly where the SPJST fits in.

In addition to excellent insurance benefits, we offer a well-rounded program of social, benevolent, and fraternal inter-action and fellowship among its members which reaches deep into the community.

All of our lodges need to strive to become an integral part of the community in which they are located. You cannot isolate yourselves and operate as a secret and a closed organization because you are not secret and you are not closed — there is nothing secret about us.. We operate entirely in the open under the authority of the statutes of the State of Texas and we have nothing to hide nor be ashamed of. How well you sell yourselves, this lodge, and the SPJST message to the surrounding community will be reflected in direct proportion to your acceptance and your growth. Essentially, it is a public relations undertaking. You must let your neighbors and your community know that you are here, what you are doing, and what you stand for. Other lodges that have followed this course of action have fared well and have had no trouble or difficulty being accepted in the community and are enjoying

Of course, as in so many instances in any organization, so much depends upon capable leadership, and I feel that you are not lacking in this area either. To put it still another way, "You have got a good thing going"; all you have to do is build on it, sell yourselves and your organization and people will naturally become interested in you and if they become interested they will want to join you and be a part of your efforts. You will find it to be "contagious."

You are joining a large fraternal family. You are not alone. You have ranks of fraternal brothers and sisters that reach from the Red River to the Gulf of Mexico and from the Sabine River to almost the Davis Mountains and the Panhandle of Texas — some 55,000 strong. So you see, you are part of a living, vibrant, and growing fraternal family. It can be stated, without equivocation nor fear of contradiction that the SPJST has been for a number of years and IS, the fastest growing Fraternal Benefit Society domiciled in Texas, so you have joined an organization that is going places and is definitely on the move.

Your District Youth Counselor, and your State Youth Director will, I am sure, have something to say about our youth and our youth program very shortly, but I would like to state at this time and caution you not to alienate or isolate your youth. Do not forget

Tammy Allen and Lisa Parker "timing up" before the ceremonies. about them! You will be looking for new leaders one of these days, so you should cultivate their interests and participation. You must include them, you cannot ignore them. They are a part of you. They are a part of us, They are a part of this community. They are a part of the entire social fabric of this state and nation, just as you once were and to ignore or bypass them or exclude them from your activities would be a grave mistake.

Think about this and consider it carefully.

At this time, I would like to present some items to Lodge\ 185, through you, Bro. Ja,sek, the todge president. I would ask Bro. Mikeska to assist me in these presentations. First of all, we have your lodge emblem which is the emblem or symbol of the SPJST which you should displa y in a prominent place' here today and in your meeting place in the coming weeks and months. This symbolizes the entire SPJST. You have of course the traditional star, with the letters SPJST within the five points of the star, surrounded by an oak leaf on the left denoting strength, steadfastness and sturdiness, and the leaf of the lily on the right, indicating cleanliness and moral purity. This emblem and the Jo:1 ,e charter, which you will receive shortly, have both been framed and enclosed .by our Supreme Lodge master craftsman, Bro. Otto Harms, who is employed as the head of our museum, library and archives department.

Wednesday, December 21, 1977 This is your lodge banner, which we have made for you and which should be displayed every time your lodge meets. Sis. Dorothy Massey, our State Youth Director, has monogrammed the banner for you with your lodge name and number.

This is your framed charter with the names of all the charter members typed thereon, and includes all those who have applied and be'en accepted for membership in Lodge 185 either before or by today. Those members who have applied for membership before or by this date and are approved later, will have their names added later in the Supreme Lodge and the charter will be returned to you for permanent possession.

In conclusion, I would like to say to you that I am convinced that the greatest good in this lodge will be accomplished by everyone — and I do mean everyone — cooperating and pulling together for a common goal. We are confident that you are equal to the task. May your work bear fruit and may you enjoy much success in the coming months and years. We welcome you, Lodge No. 185 "Hill Country" in Comal County into our wonderful SPJST family, and we wish you well!

We had a few problems getting going due to an unfortunate illness of our first president, Mr. Joe Slavik, but we overcame the difficulties and are now a growing lodge. I would like to thank all our members for their hard work and determination.

So today we are very happy on this occasion, and on behalf of Lodge No. 185 New Braunfels, I want to again extend our sincere welcome to everyone here and hope you have a good time. Thank you.

If I can take credit for anything today, 1 would like to take credit for this most beautiful weather.

I am very happy to be asked to appear before this "Hill Country" Lodge of the SPJST. I would like to express my regrets for my wife's absence; she is recovering from surgery. Let me express my appreciation for being allowed to welcome you members of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas Lodge No. 185 to this Tri-County area even though my jurisdiction extends only to the county line. I bring you a hearty welcome from the Comal County Commissioners Court and the people of Comal County.

The hisiory of Comal County is long; it is rich and carries with it the traditions and heritage of many great people, one of which is the Slavic nationality. We all must do everything we can to preserve the past that has been fundamental to our development and prosperity.

The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas was created over 75 years ago for this purpose.

We are here this afternoon to recognize that accomplishment and pledge our support for the future.

District VII Director Bob Bayer: Greetings, Brothers, Sisters, and Guests. This day, Nov. 27th, 1977, is another step forward for the SPJST in District VII. After many meetings and setbacks we have come to where we are today. Lodge 185 has overcome many problems and obstacles to become a chartered lodge of the SPJST. I wish to congratulate Brother Joe Slavik and his early members for getting Lodge 185 started; Brother Gordon Hrabal and wife for not giving up and keeping the interest high in the lodge, and to all the members of Lodge 185 for not letting us down and sticking With us , and to the many friends, visitors, guests, and members that helped us realize today.

I am very proud to be here today and be part of this chartering ceremonies. I wish Lodge 185 much success in the future.

Here's hoping this will be the beginning of continued growth. It took a lot of time and effort on the part of everyone to make this a success. Those who worked hard gave us this beginning and should be so recognized.

Now that you have the beginning of a new lodge it will take all the officers and members working together for the future for it to grow and attain higher goals. The SPJST offers many things, such as fellowship, social activities, youth activities, and mainly, good insurance for everyone.

Here's hoping you have a nice increase in membership and a lot of success. I hope everyone enjoys this day on this joyous occasion.

It has been some time since I came down to Selma to organize Lodge 185. It has been slow in coming to this day of chartering, but there was a reason for taking so long, but now it is finally here.

I would like to congratulate Brother Joe Slavik for getting this lodge started. I would also like to congratulate Brother Gordon Hrabal for taking over After Brother Slavik was no longer able to carry on; also, the other sales representatives who have helped.

Speaking of sales representatives, support them in every way you can. This is the only way your lodge will grow. If you know of anyone you would like to be a member of your lodge, let your sales representatives know about them.

At your meetings, work together.

I still like the opening of the meetings as set forth in the old SPJST ritual book where it says: "Brother officers and members, let us proceed with the transaction of business, keeping ourselves free of bias, selfishness and prejudice, and everything that we do at this meeting will be for the best interests of this order and this lodge."

Think of this, brothers and sisters, and abide by it; you can't go wrong.

LODGE NO. 178, LONGVIEWKILGORE Dear Members and Friends: We held our last meeting at 2 p.m. Dec. 11th, at the Elderville Community Center.

Brother Gene brought the meeting to order after which we had the pledge of allegiance followed '-y the lodge motto.

We then had a moment of silence for our departed brothers and sisters with special thoughts for Brother Hugo Kocia.n on the death of his dear father. Our heartfelt sympathy to Brother Hugo, of Lodge 178.

Brother Gene read a letter from our Supreme Lodge president, Brother Nick A. Morris, who said the 4Supreme Lodge /bought ten tickets for our grand opening and he said that a picture of our future lodge home hangs in the Supreme Lodge.

We had a report from Treasurer Lome Harris, followed by a report from Financial Secretary Marie Wiesner.

Our fund-raising co-chairman, Val Steele, gave a nice report and 9, donation to the lodge general fund.

Sister Clara, the chairman of our 7Intertainment Comm., gave a good -eport in which she thanked the entire Entertainment Comm. and everyone else who helped make the Christmas party' a tremendous success. Brother Gene gave an up-to-date report on our future lodge home which included selection of materials for the inside, including phones, mikes, storage rooms, etc.

He also said the barbecue pits are coming along nicely. It is all so exciting!

Ed Cain installed the new senior officers who were elected at our November meeting.

We had our committee elections which are as follows: The Entertainment Comm. was re-elected by acclamation, the Audit Comm. — Sister Shirley, Brother James, and Sister Linda.

Remuneration Comm.—Ed Cain, George Hecyk, Mitch Wiesner, Maurice Moscaro, and Betty Loye.

Cheering Comm. — Sister Leslie Line and Sister Mildred.

Sister Clara made a motion that present Co-chairman Val Steele present a list of volunteers to be nominated and elected to the committee as a whole. They are: Linda, Mitch, Loye, Marie, Jutta, Moscaro, and Gene. The motion was seconded and carried.

Brother Gene formally eliminated the Land Development Comm., because there is no longer a need for it.

Brother Gene also reminded us that as we progress we will have regular monthly meetings of the board of trustees and any lodge member is welcome to attend. He emphasized the fact that we should attend the meetings regularly, and especially the officers. He also stated that any officer who misses three meetings consecutively can he replaced by the lodge voting in a new one.

Brother Vance Slough, one of our insurance representatives, will turn in his credentials and no longer sell insurance, so there will be a vacancy for an insurance salesman.

Brother Eugene adjourned the meeting and we enjoyed nice refreshments.

LODGE NO. 49, ROWENA The last quarterly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 49 was held Sunday, Dec. 4th, 1977 in the lodge hall.

A noon meal was served in observance of Christmas and the birthdays of all the members, after which we held our regular business meeting.

Members brought gifts to the party for guests at the Needville Rest Home No. II which the SPJST helps support.

All members enjoyed meeting in our newly remodeled hall. The sisters particularly admired our kitchen, in which we laid linoleum, installed a kitchen cabinet and sink, in addition to the gas range which we had purchased previously.

Since the last meeting the lodge has gained six new members, and three new social members.

In the election of officers for 1 978 the following members were 0-elected: President — Elizabeth Walther Vice Pres. — Arthur Lisso Secretary -- Pauline Shiller Fin. LODGE NO. 188, CENTERVILLE Dear Members: It has been some time since I reported the news of our Lodge 188 to you; having broken my right arm gave me a good excuse to shift the burden to someone else. We have accomplished a great deal in this past year. Our membership has greatly increased, our beautiful new building is being erected, and we are all looking forward to dedication ceremonies some time after the first of the new year. It was decided, at our November regular monthly meeting, to re-elect our same officers and board of trustees for another year. They we re installed during the December meeting.

During this past year we have enjoyed some very good dances in our temporary lodge hall. We plan to remain there until our new building is completed. We will have a dance each Saturday night except Christmas Eve. Instead, we will have the dance on Friday night, Dec. 23rd. The music will be furnished by The Broken Spokes.

During intermission, the Walnut plant stand will be given to some lucky winner. All donations to this nroject will go to help pay for the t ables and chairs for our new lodge.

We all enjoyed the fine dance music furnished by the Music Masters the last two Saturday nights. They are booked again for

Wednesday, December 21, 1977 Jan. 14th, 1978. Our thanks to Martha Oden for donating a smoked turkey for the drawing during the intermission Saturday night. An extra thanks go to Veda Allen, winner of the turkey, for donating it back to the lodge to be sold to the highest bidder. Johnnie Allbritton made the final bid to purchase the ole' bird. All proceeds went into our fund to pay for the tables and chairs for the new lodge. It is amazing what we can do when we all work together.

Teamwork. is fun! Enthusiasm adds pleasure! It is a good feeling to help. We are not all leaders, but we are all headed toward a goal and a purpose. With enthusiasm, confidence, and cooperation we can all gladly go forward.

Remember, our next monthly meeting will be Jan. 8th, 1978, at 7:30 p.m. Let's start the New Year off right with a good attendance.

I must say we have some very good cooks and the dinner was very good, I enjoyed it and being there, since I missed the annual meeting and dinner because I was in the hospital again. I am better now and still improving.

I wish we could have had more members join us. One of our guests was District V Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska, and she talked to us for a while and then she gave us a Christmas card with a check to start our building fund; that started the ball rolling with the members present following suit with their donations. '74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: The Country Express entertained our dancing fans Dec. 10th and, as always, we had new guests coming to our lodge for entertainment. We have more and more people joining our SPJST. We are proud of our great Society, the SPJST, which is providing so many benefits for its members. We are neighbors of Lodge 188 in Centerville and Lodge 178 in Longview; with our Lodge 74 being the first one in East Texas, this has sparked much interest concerning the SPJST. Youth Leader Annie Lou Flasowski, together with the youth club, did a beautiful j ob decorating the lodge home for Christmas. The tree is pretty and the spirit of Christmas among our members is ffreat.

The officers of Lodge •74 will be installed by our past president, 'brother R. J. Hafner, in January.

Let's all pull together and work together. I know and you know that our president has to be careful in all the things he does; he is the one who sets an example for the rest of the members of the lodge.

We know we are all fallable and make mistakes, but let's try, at all times, not to make mistakes. Let's stand 100 percent by our officers and help them because that is the only way we can go forward.

our singing and Beseda dancing performance at the newly constructed Cultural Center. We are scheduled to appear on the evening of Jan. 24th, and it is planned that the first performance will be by the Seaton Brass Band, followed by the Beseda dancers, followed by the Seaton Choral Club and climaxed by Vrazels Polka Band; altogether this will be about a two-hour performance.

Fellow members, this is a great honor for us of Czech descent and we should all put our hearts in it and perform with a happy heart and a smile. You don't have to be a super star to perform, just be yourself and do the best you can.

It means that we will have to have more rehearsals to be better and after some deliberation we have decided on this schedule to be in top condition for this performance: Our first rehearsal is set for Tuesday, Dec. 27th, the second rehearsal, Thursday, Jan. 5th; the third, Tuesday, Jan. 10th, and the final and most important one, Monday, Jan. 16th, starting at 7:30 p.m. and let's all turn out and be on time.

You ladies who have not been to our rehearsals can get the details for your costume from Mrs. Albin (Georgia) Sodek, Mrs. Lillian Kosarek, or Mrs. Viola Chervenka.

This will enable you to start on your costume sooner and give you more time to make it. Just call either one of these fine members and they will be happy to tell you where to get the material and other details. Do it now and I hope all of you will turn out for the next rehearsal on Tuesday, Dec. 27th.

It is a great honor for us and we should really give it our best.

crowd to enjoy the western tunes.

The hosting committee with Marjorie Darilek in charge and friend Mike Novosad in the box office (a very nice young couple) and Marjorie's parents, Rudy and Celeste and brother, David Darilek, by her side to help. Earline and son Johnnie Hoffman, Nan Collins and Elaine Pesek were all busy for quite a while to get everyone seated in their proper places.

Saturday night with music by the Knights of Dixie was well attended and not being a formal dance, most of the ladies came dressed in lovely gowns which is always a pleasure to see. Sister Dorothy Newby was in charge and taking care of the box office. Lovely Rene Herbert greeted the guests and her husband, Bob, with his friend Robert Beauchamp, were escorting the guests to their places.

First of all, I wish to make a correction. In my letter of Nov. 30th, I stated that Bobby Alliaritton serves as vice president for the youth club, which should have been president of the youth club. Bobby, I must say is very intelligent and manages to deliver a speech very clearly and efficiently. Sorry, Bobby.

Brother Frank Tymel, after spending ten days in the hospital undergoing surgery, is back home and feeling fairly well, of course he is still weak but was glad to come home. Sorry, Frank, for placing you in the wrong hospital in my letter.

A long - time member, Sister Marie Hurley passed away Nov. 28th, 1977. Services were held in the St. John Lutheran Church at Waller. She was laid to rest in the Resthaven Cemetery with Rev. Marc. Offerstead officiating. She is survived by her husband, Charley Hurley and two sons, Charley of Hempstead and Marvin of Lake Jackson, and two grandchildren.

Sister Marie in her younger days was very active in the Hlahol Dramatic Club until she moved to Waller. We extend a heartfelt sympathy to her loved ones.

Sister Ida Hanka is confined in Park Plaza Hospital which is located close to the Warwick Hotel.

She went in Thursday. Dec. 1st with a severe cold (almost nn ,.e monia). She will probably be back home by the time you read this.

Brother Steve Kadera is also in

the hospital, at this writing, having entered on Nov. 29th. He is in Heights Hospital and will stay for several days. Steve went in with severe pains which subsided and he feels much better and is looking forward to being home a gain. Best wishes for good health to all our ailing brothers and sisters.

Brother Zdenek Nedbalek and wife, Blanka, were happy to have Zdenek's father, Mr. Josef Nedbalek of Czechoslovakia, visiting for five weeks. Mr. Nedbalek arrived Oct. 24th and was leaving Dec. 1st. While here he visited with many relatives and enjoyed the southern hospitality and will treasure the memories of his visit when he is back home in Zruc Nad Sazavou. I am glad to have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Nedbalek; a very pleasant gentleman.

Brother Kenny Bros and beautiful Lindsay Lucas announced their engagement Dec. 2nd, 1977. This is the beginning of a mutual planned future for these two lovely people.

Brother Seth and Sister Ruth Duncan returned from an enjoyable ten-day vacation. They visited Ruth's sister, Mrs. Wanda Brown in Miami Beach where they indulged in swimming in the ocean and resting in the sun, and of course, they didn't miss the dog races and horse races. Ruth had to shop for something special in formal clothes to wear at Lodge 88's special events.

As for Seth, he was satisfied just relaxing and watching the pretty girls on the beach. They also got to see a football game in the Orange Bowl between the University of Florida and Miami. Both are still dreaming about their fantastic ten-day vacation, but are glad to be home.

Brother Joe Elzner with grandson John, spent Thanksgiving at Benavides, at their deer lease, but no deer were in sight; they all must have been in hiding, so instead of a deer, John bagged a wild pig and a few quail. Joe's brother, Pete, and his family also spent the holiday in camp with them.

Wednesday December 21, 197'7 A most beautiful wedding anniversary took place Sunday, Dec. 4th at the lodge in the Chandelier Ballroom to celebrate the 10th year of the happy marriage of Brother Tim and Sister Rosalee Kostom with their close family and a host of friends to share this memorable event. From Oklahoma City, Tim's sister Ruth and her husband, Frank Kurz, with their daughter, Karolinka, and her husband, Douglas Klusmeyer, winged in on their private plane Saturday.

Cousin Ben Kostomlatsky of Switzerland, flew in Friday. Tim's niece, Ruth Moore, with daughter Holly, also arrived Saturday. A close family reunion took place at the happy couple's home on Saturday which was the beginning of the elaborate celebration on Sunday afternoon.

The holiday decorations in the Chandelier Ballroom were highlighted with Rosalee's personal touch all around. The foyer was decorated with a huge artistic centerpiece placed on the antique table and huge pot plants all around made you feel you were entering the Garden of Eden. Every table arranged for the guests held a basket of flowers in the center; these were created by Rosalee's creative mind on which she spent many an hour. The main table for the family also held beautiful flowers. Music by the famous Tannerberger band flowed through the air all evening to the delight of the hundreds of guests. The smiling bride, R.osalee, in a delicate shade of blue chiffon (very becoming) and the groom opened the evening of dancing with a dreamy waltz. A delicious buffet dinner was served and refreshments were enjoyed all through the evening. For this occasion brother-in-law Frank Kurz, a talented poet, composed the following poem in honor of Rosalee and Tim. This affair was a complete sellout way in advance and many were disappointed in not being able to purchase tickets for this once-a-year affair. Naturally it was formal and the ladies in their long gowns formed an array of colors and glitters on the dance floor to accentuate the holiday season.

Out of town guests were many; from Beaumont, my son, Erwin, and my lovely daughter-in-law, Doris, with friends Evan McManus and Dan Sinclair shared a table with Jeff Hennen and me for that evening. Next to our table were seated two lovely couples and as they approached, a surprised "Hello! Where did you come from?" echoed from the four couples. It happened that Bill and Melisa McGee, with friends Wade and Joyce Lowe, are also from Beaumont and were members of the same dance club, but the most surprising thing was that the son of sill and Melisa is the star vocalist with the Glenn Miller band (since the first of this year), and this is what brought his parents to Lodge 88's Chandelier Ballroom for the first time. They were thrilled with our facilities, and no wonder, our Chandelier Ballroom is lavishly decorated for the holiday season, by the Entertainment Comm., and special appreciation goes to Sister Frances

Crossman, an expert in creating beautiful holiday wreaths, and all through the building the mood of this season is displayed. That includes the outside of our lodge home, glittering with colored lights.

The Entertainment Comm. did a great job, as usual. Oh! the Glenn Miller Band also has a female vocalist, a very attractive young lady, to entertain and please the audience. To these people from Beaumont and other places we extend our sincere invitation to come back and enjoy a pleasant evening.

Our devoted couple, Brother Herbert and Gazela Huber, celebrated their wedding anniversary; they were married Dec. 9th, 1933, which accounts for 47 years of happy married life for this great couple. Gazela's home town is Shiner, and Herbert comes from Pearland. Some way fate brought them together to share their interesting life and raise three sons, Donald is married to Lois and they have added to the family circle two boys and one girl. Harvey and wife Janet live in Pearland and also have two boys and one girl. J. W. flitters around fancy free and resides in Magnolia. For their parents' 47th wedding anniversary they treated them to a night for a dinner and a show at the Million Dollar Dump. I can visualize Gazela watching the show. I bet her eyes almost popped out of her head or she may have closed them. Congratulations!

The 36th wedding anniversary was observed by Brother Dean and Sister Faye Evetts Nov. 27th, 1941.

Faye's maiden name was Kocurek and her home town was Wallis, while Dean came originally from Waco — even came from opposite directions — love has a funny way of finding a way to bring two people together. Out of this happy union two sons made their lives complete: Charles and Ronald, and now a granddaughter, Sherryl, who is their pride. Both Dean and Faye, with son Charles, are very active in the lodge. Congratulations.

Brother Otto Mikeska, husband of our District V Sales Representative Sister Evelyn Mikeska, is at home from the hospital where he spent some time. Evelyn also has her mother living with them. Mrs. Tracy Macak enjoys her daughter's home and loves to accompany

16 Evelyn on her business trips. Mrs. Macak is very handy in creating interesting and lovely items with her hands.

It is so gratifying to know that our members, even living in distant places, keep up with the activities of their lodge; one such member we have is Sister Jennie Mae (Rulik) Frank, now lives in San Diego, Calif., for years. Many of you will recall Brother Louis Rulik and wife, Marie, operating a delicatessen store in the old Houston Market Place. Brother Rulik was very active in various positions in Lodge No. 88; he also served as a lodge organizer and gave it up after moving to California with his family. Son Louis, before entering the armed forces in the second WW, was active and served as president of our, at that time youth club.

This club consisted of young men and women, not teenagers, and when most of the young men were called to serve our country this youth club was dissolved. Daughter Jennie Mae, a very talented pianist, was priceless to our Dramatic Club.

Jennie Mae accompanied most of our musical productions performed on our stage which were directed by talented music, director Professor Hlavaty. The Rulik family, of four of our members, is survived

by Sister Jennie Mae (Rulik) married to Karel Frank. Needless to say, in her heart, she is here with us at Lodge No. 88. Thank you for your holiday greetings.

Our annual meeting was held Sunday, Dec. 10th, and, as usual, it is a trying day for all members who are interested in the welfare of their lodge. The deliberation of reports from numerous committees are very interesting and it is sad that only a handful of devoted workers are always on hand to lead and mostly work to obtain and preserve what we have today. As in our SPJST conventions, the bylaws always claim a lot of time; so it is with local lodges that do keep up with the rules to obtain their own local lodge rules and regulations and to get these perfected takes up most of the time of the annual lodge meeting. All in all, it is necessary to have them and mainly to abide by them.

Helen Hegwood was elected as guide. Flag Bearer Bob Allbritton declined and Mark Wahlberg was elected; Sgt.-at-Arms Ruth Bartula declined and Ruth Duncan was elected in her place; all these were elected by acclamation.

The trustee members nominated were all good and faithful members and are willing to cope with the tremendous responsibilities of our great lodge.

The Board of Trustees consists of 15 members and the lodge treasurer automatically serves as treasurer of the board. The following are on the 1978 Board of Trustees: Joe Miksch, Gene Barcak, Royal Warflash, John Hilsher, W. Neskorik, Ed Kadlecek, E. J. Zalmanek, Tim Kostom, Joe Fizner, Norval Crossman, Johnnie Broz, A. J. Stayton, Leander Pflughaupt, Karl Lindenmann and Wm. Wehring.

There are various committees to be appointed by the president and first vice president. We had a very pleasant meeting and all the attending members were very patient and stayed until the newlyelected officers were installed and the meeting adjourned.

LODGE NO. 39, BRYAN Dear Brothers and Sisters, Here we are only a little over a week before Christmas. What a glorious time this is. The birth of our Jesus will be re-lived again, as always, at Christmastime. I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a good year ahead.

May we all be happy and blessed.

If your 1977 year was not as good as it should have been then perhaps 19'78 will be better.

I want to report that our Christrna.s party last Sunday was a great success. We had about 200 members present and we are so proud of it. About 25 small children came up to sing Christmas songs and talk to Santa Claus. They were a little shy at first, but when Santa passed out the goodies they warmed up fast. Some even sat in his lap and told him what they want for Christmas. I do hope that each one of them get what they asked for.

I want to thank all the beautiful people who helped with the food and preparations for this event.

There are special thanks in my heart for a few who did the extra hard work and spent much time at the hall decorating it and everything, but I am afraid that I might forget some person so I will not mention names. You members know who did most of the work. Thank you again for your devoted time; it is appreciated.

We had a good year in 1977, thanks to all you people who worked so hard to keep us going. I am excited about the coming year and I know it will be as good or better for we are off to a good start.

Our New Year's Eve dance, Saturday, Dec. 31st, will not be free

17 for members due to this special event coming on a Saturday. The rest of the year, the dances falling on the last Saturday of the month are free to members.

Fraternally, Lillie Matejka President - SPJST LODGE NO 20, GRANGER Dear Friends: The annual SPJST Komensky Lodge No. 20 meeting and party turned out to be a real gala affair with some 100 members, relatives and friends present The Christmas party was a great success for both children and adults on Sunday, Dec. 4th, 1977.

The annual meeting started at 2 p.m. with the regular order of business being conducted. The purchasing of some fireproof filing cabinets in which to keep the minutes of Lodge 20 was discussed.

These minutes date back to the early 1900s and have great historical value. Brothers Gorubec and Holubec stated they would look into this.

Lodge 20 is also proud to welcome five members into the lodge. They are Allan and Mary Ann Tomasek and they have three lovely daughters, Cynthia, Rebecca, and Melynda. We are also proud to say that Mary Ann has already been a great deal of help to the youth club.

The election of officers followed.

All the 1977 officers were re-elected by acclamation. The 1978 SPJST Komensky Lodge 20 officers are: President - Hubert Gorubec Vice President - Henry Vitek Secretary -- Rita Marburger Treasurer -- R. F. Santa Claus then appeared to visit with the young and old alike.

The Youth Club then asked Santa to join them in singing Christmas carols. The youth sang: "0 Christmas Tree," "Jingle Bells." "Away in a Manger," "Joy to the World," and ended with "Silent Night" when everyone was asked to join in Santa and his helpers then passed out bags of goodies to all the children and the older members present.

A delicious buffet was served by the Entertainment Committee which consisted of the following: Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Strmiska, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Vrana, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Elton (Buck) Spinn. They served barbecued chicken, Elgin hot sausage, beans, potatoes, with parsley and butter, pickles, and almost any type of pastry to sweet en your tooth. It was greatly enjoyed by all present and a special thank you to this wonderful Entertainment Committee because we know it took -a lot of hard work.

Emil Malish played his accordion, with his lovely wife, Toni, helping with the vocal portion while young John Rabel accompanied on the organ and electric guitar and they are all from Bartlett. They provided the lovely Czech music for the listening and dancing enjoyment of everyone present.

Special credit was given to the Decorating Committee consisting of Sisters Vera Groubec, Elizabeth Vitek, and Brownie Holubec and to all the youth club members who helped in decorating the Christmas tree and the hall.

ANNUAL MEETING AND CHRISTMAS PARTY HELD AT LODGE NO. 54, WEST

By Maxine Sefcik Despite the large variety of festivities within our vicinity held recently, it was gratifying to have a good attendance at the last meeting, which was held in conjunction with a Christmas social Sunday, Dec. 11th.

Meanwhile, as the SPJST members, including a family of four generations, began arriving, they were greeted and made welcome to the family affair.

According to our scheduled event, it came time for President Ernest Zahirniak to call the meeting to order and he proceeded with the patriotic ceremony, followed by a tribute of respect for departed Sister Charlie (Helen) Smaistrla of West. May she rest in peace.

Since there were no corrections and/or additions to the minutes of our previous meeting which were read by Secretary Frank Cocek, they stood approved as read.

Correspondence was acknowledged as received from Editor Rudy Sefcik and family, and from the SPJST Home Office, both parties expressing Season's Greetings; and a letter from Lodge No. 178, Longview, pertaining to their new lodge *home building project, which was then deferred to new business.

Youth Leader Mona Zahirnia-k advised the members of the youth club being unable to have their Christmas party as scheduled for Dec. 12th because West High School was hosting a basketball tournament on the same date and several of our members were participating in the competition, so the party was rescheduled for Dec. 14th.

In addition to the reports, Brother Zahirniak, who is also the building manager, mentioned several

necessary building improvements, mainly to the exterior. After presenting the members with a reasonable purpose for improvements, the attending members authorized our manager to proceed with the necessary improvements. Another session ;followed concerning the rental facility increase for 1978.

After everyone present evaluated the rental cost of the building's facilities, a motion was passed to authorize Brother Zahirniak to charge SPJST members and nonmembers a set fee that was agreed on by the members at the annual

(Photo courtesy The West News) meeting; and if other obstacles arise for additional charges of the rental, then the negotiations shall be transmitted between the manager and involved party.

The chairman then called on Editor Rudy Sefcik to speak to the lodge members about Ross Lodge 126 merging with Lodge 54. Brother Sefcik welcomed everyone present at the meeting and then explained to the West lodge members about Ross lodge holding a meeting Dec. 4th about merging with us, and assured them according to the SPJST By-Laws, that this merger will not be in conflict with the by-laws and he further explained the procedure after a lodge merges with another lodge. He stressed the fact that the Lodge 54 members will have to vote on this matter. Brother Sefcik personally pointed out that he welcomes Lodge 126 members merging with Lodge 54 and stated how this all came about.

In concluding his remarks he expressed greetings 111 the Czech language, and commended the merged lodge for their decision to

join Lodge No. 54.

A motion to the effect of accepting Ross lodge membership into West Lodge 54 was made, seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.

Brother Joe Dujka, president of Lodge 126, expressed his appreciation to everyone present for their kind interest in accepting their members into our lodge and stated they shall continue their support for the interest of this lodge. Brother will also remain as an ac tive sales representative of Lodge 54. We welcome him to our local lodge roster. Good luck!

Another longstanding member, Brother Ben Kudelka, age 86, and his wife, of the recently merged lodge, were recognized for their devotion.

It was reported that Lodge 126 has 117 members and effective Jan. 1st, 1978, there will no longer be a Lodge Dubovy Haj. On behalf of Lodge 54's officers and members, we wish to extend our congratulations to the former Lodge 126 members for taking the initiative for the benefit of our

Order and we shall look forward to their attendance at our lodge activities. A cordial invitation Is extended to all of you!

Membership transferees were: James A. Maier, David Maier, Ernest Uptmore, Johnnie Mynar II, Johnnie Mynar III, Faye Mynar (with two policies), and Teresa Mynar. A conversion policy was made on Thomas Ray Wolf, Jr. New membership enrollment included: George Hykel, Richard Dale Wolf (two policies), and Michael Paul Wright (two policies).

In addition to our new members new members, Karen Faye Mynar and Sharon Kay Mynar, twin daughters of Brother and Sister Johnnie Mynar II, were added to our roster. Their proud grandfather, Brother Johnnie Mynar, Sr., had the privilege to enroll them into our lodge. When these two babies were born Nov. 8th, 1977, in the West Community Hospital, they made history for the the physician who delivered them, and our lodge is also privileged to boast about having the first set of twins enrolled as members. President Zahirniak expressed congratulations to Johnnie and Lillie Mynar, grandparents, who were in attendance; we regret that the Johnnie Mynar II family was unable to attend.

After no objection, a motion was made and seconded that we elect the present officers by acclamation. Motion carried.

We wish to take this opportunity and thank the Lodge 54 officers for rendering their services for the past year. Let us endeavor to continue giving them our fullest support for the new year; it's a heavy burden for any lodge officer to handle its responsibility, therefore, let's make it easier for them by attending a meeting or any other function we host at the lodge as long as it's not a private party your attendance and support will ease their burden and, at the same time, it will be appreciated. Inject this thought in your resolutions for 1978!

A discussion was brought before adjournment about the correspondence from Lodge 178. It was suggested and agreed upon that the lodge help them toward their project.

Before adjournment Brother Zahirniak acknowledged the persons who prepared the meal and decorated the hall for our Christmas social: Bob and Marge Wright, Ted Kocian, Mona Zahirniak, Mary Skopik, Joe Mynar and Ernest Zahirniak. He also invited everyone for the following meal and social.

Appreciation was then given to members who brought pastries of their choice.

The youth leaders distributed bags of goodies to the children and senior citizens that the mother lodge donated.

With time passing relentlessly on, the festive season is upon us.

This is the time when most families and close friends get together to re-affirm the bonds linking them to their parents, sisters, brothers and close associates. Only seven days separate Christmas eve from New Year's eve and for most people it is the time for assessing the results of the year just past.

In our family tree the old year was just filled with events of great significance.

To all of you in the SPJST family, Lodge 54 members wish to extend best wishes to everyone for the merriest Christmas and a joyful New Year!

LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends: The last meeting of 1977 was called to order by President Carl Zich on Dec. 11th and opened with the pledge of allegiance by Flag Bearer Stephen Paprskar. Secretary Christine Zich read the November meeting minutes; we heard the remaining reports and went into the main business of the day, the election of officers. This was quickly accomplished and all officers except two new board of trustee members, were reinstated.

The new trustees are John Murphy and Al Kercho. Following the balloting, Albert Kubala installed the newly-elected officers. Our vice president is Martha Durham, the treasurer is John Paprskar, Financial Secretary Joe Krivanek, Guide Richard Hubenak, and Board of Trustee members: Al Svacek, Mike Paprskar, and John Paprskar.

We were glad to see Brother Kozel and his wife who have been absent for several months. It was also a pleasure to have as guests the parents of Alene Kercho, Mr. and Mrs. Zub. Truly a welcome surprise was seeing Bennie Bartek.

Not so long ago she was confined to the hospital and at home following a heart attack. It is our wish that she will continue to improve and be able to attend future gatherings. Also back for the first time since an unfortunate auto accident was our hall manager's wife, Ima Laymance. She is not quite as active as before but is bravely making a steady comeback -- hang in there, Imo.' Martha Durham reported sending a sympathy card to Mary Logfing, who lost her mother recently.

A get-well card was sent to Ruby Martinet who was ill in St. Joseph Hospital.

With this meeting ending the year it is timely to comment on the work of the board of trustees.

Our bar now houses a new efficient beer box and dispenser, eliminating the clutter and extra work formerly involved. We are

also now able to vend champagne and wine. All outer doors have been recovered or replaced making our facility more secure. Many of our tables now sport shiny new formica tops and several hundred new chairs were purchased. The major accomplishment of the year, however, was the paving of the parking lot, a project discussed for many years and finally realized at great expense and not without a maximum of research, meetings. and discussions. We are thankful for the efforts of this team of men sq interested in the lodge, and under their guidance we hope to see even more goals achieved. Two members of the board for part of the year were Joe Juran and Raymond Hubenak. Joe Krivanek served the whole year.

Only a few days remain until the last social event of the year — our New Year's Eve dance. Reservations should be made promptly, unless all tables are taken by the time of this issue of Vestnik. Call Manager Laymance for information.

Well, this is signout for '77 but I'll be back for '78 (as per Sunday's appointment) and here's hoping that the fresh, bright New Year will hold an abundance of wonderful happenings and God's blessings for everyone of you. LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Vestnik Readers, The youth club held its monthly meeting Dec. 4th. President Clare Dorotik called the meeting to order.

The pledge of allegiance and prayer were recited.

We had our Christmas picture contest. In the ages 6-9 group, Jean Dorotik won 1st place and Michelle Srubar won 2nd place. I was very happy. There were other winners in the age groups 10-12, and 13-17.

The Christmas stockings we made were filled with goodies and the stockings will be given to the rest home.

Refreshments were served that are always so goad, which were served 'by our good mothers.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Youth Club Members: This is to inform you of the past events we held for the month of December: Dec. 9th—Youth Club Christmas party and visit at Four Seasons Nursing Home. Each youth member brought a wrapped gift for a man or lady to the nursing home. We left the lodge at 7:15 p.m. to go to the Four Seasons. Nursing Home and then we returned for our party to have entertainment and refreshments.

Dec. 10th — We had a play practice at 10 a.m.

Dec. 11th — We held our annual meeting. All members, 16 years old and older were invited to attend and help elect our new lodge officers. The morning session started at 10 a.m., then we had lunch at 12 noon and the afternoon session started at 1:30 p.m.

The members were informed that this was our lodge and we have a right to exercise our vote.

Dec. 16 — We filled bags for the lodge Christmas program at 7 p.m.

Dec. 17 — We held a play practice at 10 a.m.

Dec. 19 — Lodge 88 Christmas program at 7:30 p.m. was held; all youth who were in the program or choir were asked to be at the lodge at 6:30 p.m. to meet in the Youth Room.

LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its annual Christmas party and supper Friday, Dec. 9th, at 6 p.m. After everyone had arrived, Mare Dorotik, Sherry Krpec and Diane Dluhos led the youth club members in a program of singing of various Christmas songs.

After our program the members, along with their parents, enjoyed a delicious turkey and ham Christmas supper.

The members then exchanged Christmas gifts and each member also received a bag of candy from Sherry Krpec, acting as Santa Claus.

We went to the rest home on Dec. 14th. We cleaned up the hall on Dec. 9th for our Christmas play.

ANNA FRANCES MILAN, who passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29th, 1977, at the Medic-Center, at the age of 82.

Sister Milan was born Nov. 29th, 1895 in Kunovice, DISTR Uher.

Hra,diste, Moravia, Czechoslovakia.

She came to the United States in 1910. She married Brother Joseph Sam Milan (formerly Milankovich and now deceased) on Dec. 8, 1914.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1964.

Sister Milan was indeed Matriarch to her family, Lodge 154 and the American Sokol organization.

She was known as Grandmother Milan to all of our youth club members and the over 200 Sokol gymnasts.

She had been an organizer --later sales representative — for the SPJST since 1934, and for a good many of those years, Sister Milan was the top SPJST sales representative.

Along with their eight children, she reared two nieces, Mary Pavey -f Fort Worth, Mickey Ban of St. Louis, Mo., and nephew Emil Chorich, also of St. Louis, Mo. Sister Milan was also a member of the Friendship Club, KJZT, and All Saints Catholic Church.

Rosary was recited at Shannon's North Chapel, Wednesday, at 7:30 p.m., with Rev. Wm. R. Hoover.

Funeral mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday in All Saints Catholic Church with Rev. John Raab. officiating.

Brother Nick A. Morris, Supreme Lodge president, conducted the

burial ritual at the graveside. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Survivors include: sons, Joe G. Milan, Frankie Milan, Jerry Milan, all of Fort Worth, Emil Milan of Hurst; daughters, Mrs. Bill (Mary) Renfro, Mrs. Jeanie Mason, Mrs. Don (Rosie) Steinman, all of Fort Worth, Mrs. Emil (Frances) Mamula of South Bend, Indiana; sisters, Mrs. Rose Svojger, Mary Hale, both of Fort Worth, Frances Vitovski of Czechoslovakia; 31 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Pallbearers were grandsons: David Milan, Jim Mason, Jr., Joey Milan, Donald Steinman, Jr., J. C. Mason, Rome Milan, Roy Steinman, and Talon Milan.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace and her memory live among us forever.

Resolution Committee: Mary Hale Rose Steinman Mary Pavey SPJST — EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge No. 50, El Campo, wish to express our sympathy to the family of our beloved brother, LOUIS F. LIPPMAN, age 79, who died at Nightengale Hospital in El Campo, Dec. 4th, after a long illness.

Brother Lippman is survived by his wife, the former Cecile Huvar of Yoakum; three sons, Gerald Wayne of El Campo, Glenn of Houston and Jack of Lake Jackson; three sisters, Mrs. Till Goldstein of Dallas, Mrs. Evelyn Rosenthal of Bay City and Mrs. Charlotte Lee of San Antonio; and six grandchildren.

Brother Lippman was past president of Wharton County Savings and Loan, a charter member of the Lions Club, a founder of the local Elks Lodge chapter, and was active in the Chamber of Commerce, American Legion and agriculture. He also served in WW I and WW II. A rosary was recited Sunday, Dec. 4th, at Triska Funeral Chapel at 8 p.m.

Funeral mass was celebrated Monday, Dec. 5th at St. Philip Catholic Church, with Rev. James Brunner, yr onsignor Julius Petru, and Rev. Henry Rolf officiating. Interment

Wednesday, December 21, 1977 was made in Holy Cross Cemetery, under the direction of Triska Funeral Home of El Campo.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, in behalf of the entire membership of Lodge 180, San Angelo, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, LILLIE HOLUBEC, who passed away Oct. 17, 1977, in Shannon Hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Marman Roe of St. Luke United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.

Sister Holubec was born July 12, 1913, in Runnels County. She was married to Alfons Holubec on Dec. 18, 1939, in San Angelo.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Bill Holubec of San Angelo; one brother, Emil Kohutek of Roscoe; four sisters, Frances Chvojka, Marie Laww, Julia Mikeska, and Ella Vidler, all of San Angelo.

A son preceded her in death in 1969.

Pallbearers were Harvey Hoelscher, C. F. Marek, C. B. Hohensee, Frank Jarrapt, R. L. Hall and Jack Sullivan.

Resolution Committee: Frank Havlak Laddie Socha Robert Grigar — SPJST — EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 49, Pokrok Rowena, in behalf of the entire membership, express our heartfelt sympathy to ,,he family of our departed lodge brother, EUGENE J. (GENE) HALAMICEK, who died at 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6th, in Shannon Hospital in San Angelo as a result of a drowning accident. He was 59 years old.

Brother Halamicek was born April 23rd, 1918, in Rowena. He had lived around Bronte for the past 20 years. He was married to Jimmie Mae Patton Nov. 22, 1957 in Las Cruces, N.M. He was a retail grocer in Crane from 1944 to 1949, a past

23 director of the Martin Glover Co., in San Angelo, a member of SPJST Lodge No. 49, in Rowena, the Odd Fellows and Rebeccas and the Downtown Lions Club of Rowena.

His father, the late W. A. Halamicek was a Rowena general merchandise merchant for many years before moving to San Angelo.

Brother W. A. Halamicek was a former mayor of San Angelo.

Services were held at 2 p.m.

Thursday in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. C. Earl Lewis of First Methodist Church in Bronte, officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Rowena.

Survivors include his wife; a son, John Davis Halamicek of Bronte; four sisters, Mrs. J. W. (Wandine) Teague of Longview, /qrs. Z. R. (Pauline) Anderson of Odessa, Mrs. Maxine Aired of San Angelo, and Mrs. H. E. (Dorine) Droll of Munster; one brother, W. A. Halamicek, Jr., of Denver, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Po obede ptedseda p. McBride podal zpravu o tom, jak tad 25 za rok pokroeil a jak si stoji finaneno a zaroveri sclelil, ze letos zaplatili posledni splatku na sin a ze pozdeji spaleji dlutnou notu a ze behem pet let se vge zaplatilo.
