"DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY" FOR THE CANCER SOCIETY

THE LEON COUNTY CHAPTER of the American Cancer Society held a Dance-a-Thon hosted by the Leon County SPJST Youth Club, in Centerville, Friday night and Saturday, Nov. 4th and 5th, 1977. Sponsors are due to pay out over 31,700. There were 20 couples entered in the dance and six couples made it to the thud count down. A sy o 11 thanks goes to all who

helped in any way to make the dance a success.

Statistics show that cancer touches at least one in four persons, and with the help of all, through research maybe a cure can be found. (From the Leon County News, sent in by Sister Emma Bass. See story, page 15.)

FROM THE EDITOR On the front page of this issue is a picture of what the youth club of our Lodge No. 188, Centerville accomplished and sponsored recently. The cutlines and accompanying article tell the story rather well and all concerned, young and adults alike, are to be congratulated and complimented. It is especially pleasant to see so many SPJST T-shirts being worn and displayed; certainly anyone who came to the Dance-a-Thon could not have any doubts about which organization was sponsoring the charitable affair! Our SPJST Society has not always had the acceptance it now has, because (1) it was a Slavonic or Czech-founded organization and (2) the claim that the initials SPJST were too hard to remember and even say!

This writer remembers well when, about 20 years ago, a radio announcer was speaking of an SPJST function and it went something like this: "There will be a Fourth of July celebration at the SP .. . gee, you have to sneeze to say this . . . JST hall (etc). I wonder what that stands for? . . . well, anyway, the public is invited."

In that connection, your editor was inducted and sworn into the armed forces April 7, 1941, at the same time with a friend who was a member of the Elks lodge in Houston. The swearing in was over about 1 p.m. and the officer told us we were free until 6 p.m. My friend suggested we go to the Elks lodge to play a game of pool. We came to the lodge, where there was a sign that read: BPOE (Benevol(Continued on page 22)

NEVVSBRIEFS Albert R. Scasta, 81, passed away in a Sweeney hospital on Nov. 20th.

Brother Scasta had been a resident of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville since February of this year. Funeral services were held from the Hiller Funeral Home in Bryan on Nov. 22nd, with SL President Nick A. Morris officiating in the funeral home and at the graveside services. Burial was in the Wheelock Cemetery.. Brother Scasta was 'a long-time member of Lodge No.. 94, Wheelock, having served as financial secretary of that lodge, for some 30 years. He had been a member of Lodge No.

Wednesday, November 30, 1977 94 since he joined the SPJST on 3 September 1916. * * Mrs. Frances Sedivy, 87, of 1409 Kiest Blvd, Dallas, former resident of Ennis, died Monday morning Nov. 21st in a Dallas hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in Ennis, and burial was in Myrtle Cemetery. Sister Sedivy was a member of Lodge No. 25, Ennis, for 64 years.

Twenty-six sales representatives made sales in October in the amount of 122 members for $485,500 in Insurance sales for a total of 827 members for $4,261,150 in insurance sales.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our annual lodge meeting was held Sunday, Nov. 6th, at 1 p.m., with President Alfred Klusacek in charge.

Flagbearers Josef Morris and Vincent Schiller, substituting for James Allen, led the asembly in the pledge to the U.S. flag.

Visitors recognized were Ann Balusek, Joe Zvolanek, Ruth Maruna, Joe Krohulik, Mathu Cable, Marylou Skrabanek, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bradley. Please come again, soon.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers and sales representatives and also the minutes of the previous meeting, which were approved as read. Correspondence included the recipient from the Supreme Lodge of the mortuary dues and a $100 donation from RVOS Lodge No. 5, Seaton.

The sick list included: Brothers John H. Kohut and Bob Vasicek, and Sister Albina Lesikar, Sister Lesikar passed away since the last meeting, on Friday, Nov. 11th.

Brothers, get well soon so you can get back into circulation.

New members accepted were: Edmund W. Jeske, Barry Paul Gidden, Gary Lynn Gosney, Linda Ann Gosney, Ernest H. Pfeiffer, Sheila Gail Harris, Tammy Jean Harris, Karen Ann Schneider, Shawn W. A warm welcome to each of those named and we hope you will become active members.

The officers' reports included those of the treasurer and financial secretary. The chairmen gave their reports, only the ticket chairman gave a good report. Brother Frank Klinkovsky read the trustees' minutes of their meeting Oct. 18th. They had discussed the free appreciation dance and the annual members' Christmas party.

The appreciation dance will be Saturday, Dec. 10th, with free admission and music by Edwin Gaas and the Top Five, from Caldwell, playing country-western, polkas and waltzes. The drinks in the bar

4 will be discounted but the kitchen will have the usual prices; so come out and enjoy an evening out at Seaton Star Hall for nothing.

The annual members' Christmas party will be Sunday. Dec. 11th, starting at 4 p.m., with the youth program, followed by the social hour when free drinks and eggnog will be served from 5 to 6 p.m.; the turkey supper will be served at 6 p.m., and the awards program will be in conjunction with the supper.

The ladies have volunteered to bake turkeys and make dressing and the other members are being asked to bring salads and sweets.

The lodge will furnish two vegetables, cranberry sauce and the bread in addition to the turkeys.

This supper is for members only and the rest of their family living in the same household; so don't forget because this will be the only notice given and that is Sunday, Dec. 11th, from 4 p.m. on.

After the board minutes were discussed, we proceeded with the election of officers for next year.

The Balloting Committee was chosen and these members served on it: Brothers Henry Mares, Frank Maruna and Sister Alice Banning.

The recording secretaries were: Sisters LaVerne Vanicek and Georgie Sodek.

The officers elected were: President Alfred Klusacek, Sr., Vice President Jimmy Bryant, Secretary Dolores Skrabanek, Treasurer Ruby L. Bolton, Financial Secretary Willie E. Kohutek.

Three trustees elected for threeyear terms are Brothers Jerry Chupik, and Sisters Lillian Kosarek and Emily Stuteville; Brother Jerry Trampota was elected to a one-year term to fill the unexpired term of Sister Ruby Bolton. Brother Clarence Sodek was elected to a threeyear term as auditor.

Brother Anton Motl was re-elected parliamentarian and so was Sister Annie Jakubec, Czech reporter, and Dorothy Pechal (yours truly), English reporter.

Sister ,Evyon Kurecka was reelected youth leader.

The various chairmen will he elected in the Dec. 4th meeting.

Youth Leader Evyon Kurecka gave the leader's report, stating that 43 members were present, with three new members and five visitors. Parts for the Christmas program were distributed to the

youth club members and they will advise when the practices will be.

The secretary read the premium refund check recipients' names and presented these to the ones present.

Door prize winners were: Sister Ann Koon and Brother Jerry Pechal.

The next meeting will be Sunday, Dec. 4th, at 2 p.m.

LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA

Dear Members: TENNIE COFFMAN! TENNIE COFFMAN! Where were you when we held our November lodge meeting? Your name was drawn for $25 from the Members' Attendance Fund. This has been announced before and it does make our meetings more lively; $25 will be added and for December, the name drawn will receive $50 if they are present. This goes on until someone gets it and then we will start over again with $25. We have a very important meeting on Dec. 14th, so be there and help elect our officers for 1978.

Wonder why Iona and Cliff Hubbard were all smiles at our meeting? Could it be that their son, Butch, and his wife, Dorothy, presented them with a granddaughter named Gina Marie?

Our Christmas covered dish supper will start at '7 p.m. Dec. 17th, and our free dance will kick off at 9 p.m. with the Sugarlanders.

Please remember to put your name on your dishes so there will be no mix up. Don't forget to BYOB or beer and we have set-ups and ice that can be purchased at the bar.

I had a very nice chat with Brother Kadlecek the other night.

He read my article and found out I had attended Bryant Station school and we traveled down many a graveled road. It sure is nice to share things like this with others.

We had a very nice dance Nov. 5th with Julius Tupa and the Night Shift. Our own Ann Bingham was a jewel as she seated our guests. She is a most charming hostess. Her husband, "Pape Bing" had great success on our bottle. Thanks Papa.

The Wards seemed to enjoy themselves, at the door and they were great at greeting our guests.

If anyone is on the sick list, let us trust they will soon be up and

about. Vicki, Pete and Louise Willis's daughter-in-law, came through surgery just fine.

Don't forget we have our New Year's dance tickets available. Let us all try to get them going.

Wednesday, November 30, 1977 LODGE NO. 161, JOURDANTON Dear Readers: Lodge La Parita No. 161, Jourdanton, will hold its regular quarterly meeting Sunday, Dec. 11th, at 11:30 a.m. at the Civic Center in Jourdanton.

This is an important meeting because it will be election of officers.

After the meeting we will have a free plate lunch.

LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE Dear Members: Lodge No. 107 met in the lodge building Nov. 13th, at 3:30 p.m.

President Bayer called the meeting to order and led the members in the pledge to the flag.

Officers' roll call. showed Rex Purchis, vice president, absent. The minutes were read and approved as read.

Treasurer Sralla gave his report and other reports from Financial Secretary lima and President Bayer were given.

Memorials in memory of John Pavliska, Jr., and Jerry Pavliska, were given by the Robert Bayer family.

All bills had not been turned in so there was not a complete report given in the Peanut Festival booth.

President Bayer stated he needed a list of all the presidents of Lodge 107. Brother Joseph Bayer stated he had the list and also their tenure of office.

The members voted to put a new lock on the front door and also to put a rental fee on the chairs and tables.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer reported Christmas caroling on Dec. 4th at 3 pin. and a Christmas party and hayride are also planned for Friday, Dec. 16th.

Joseph Bayer brought a copy of the Lodge 107 history and some of the members had a chance to preview its contents. He stated that more work needs to be done on the youth club section. He had some material but he had been feeling poorly and did not get as much

5 done as he expected.

Our annual social was scheduled for Dec. 4th. The doors will open at 1 p.m. A short business meeting with election of officers is planned for about 2 p.m. A covered dish meal is to be served later in the evening. Each member is to bring a meat dish and one other dish, vegetable or dessert enough for their own family. The drinks, plates, and forks will be furnished by the lodge. All members, youth club member or adult, and their families, are urged to attend. Let's make this a real fun social. Cards, dominoes, music, anything you like, will be played all afternoon.

Let's all make a real effort to attend.

Eight new members were welcomed into our lodge. We are very happy to have them join us and hope they will enjoy being a part of our organization. We welcome John, Barbara and Thomas Burleson, Dona Sue and Beverly Stadler, Lori and Jennifer Hrna and Larry Robert Ehlers.

Martha Hrna won the door prize for the second month. How lucky can you get?

Refreshments were plentiful and everyone enjoyed the social that followed.

Fraternally, Pauline S. Pavliska Secretary - SPJST — LODGE NO. 178, LONGVIEWKILGORE Dear Members and Friends: Our last meeting was held on November 20th, at 2 p.m. at the Elderville Community Center.

The meeting was called to order

by President Eugene Hablinski, after which we had the pledge of allegiance followed by the lodge motto.

We dispensed with the reading of the minutes because we had much business to discuss and also, we had our election of officers.

We had a report from Financial Secretary Marie Wiesner, who gave a nice report and also had a check for our building fund from Brother Marvin Mikeska. Our heartfelt thanks to Brother Marvin.

Sister Val Steele, who, along with Brother Bob Stevenson, are cochairmen of the fund-raising committee, gave us a report along with their regular monthly donation.

Word has it that Val is a very dedi-

cated and hard worker for our cause. She has our deepest gratitude.

Sister Clara Hablinski, our entertainment chairman, and the wife of our president, the one with the same last name, is another busy little bee. You could tell that from her report on a hamburger cookout and a spaghetti dinner and from the enthusiasm she showed when she gave her report.

Important date to remember: December 3rd — when we will have our Christmas party at the Knights of Columbus Hall, beginning at 7 p.m. That is on a Saturday night.

Another important date to remember is that our December meeting will be held on the 2nd Sunday, at 2 p.m. at the Elderville Community Center, instead of the third Sunday.

We are now selling tickets for prizes to be given away at the grand opening of Pinewood Heritage Lodge No. 178. The prizes are. a portable color TV set, a 12-gauge Remington 1100 shotgun, and an AM-FM radio.

Mr. Billingsly, one of the representatives of the contractors who are building our lodge, gave us a very encouraging and exciting report and he also showed us the architect's sketches of the lodge.

It generated so much excitement!

This is truly a dream come true, our flag unfurled in all its glory!

Brother Hablinski showed us the cards we now have for members, youth leaders and assistant youth leaders.

We had a report from our youth leader, Brother Floyd Snyder, who gave such a warm and enthusiastic report about our youth. He is truly involved and interested in those children. He suggested a baseball field on the lodge grounds in the future.

We had our election of officers, who were all re-elected by acclamation, except for the addition of the office of reporter. Brother Breitkreutz thanked everyone who helped with the election. He then turned the meeting back to the president.

The door prizes were drawn and the winners were Tammie Hand for the youth and Peggy Dieterich for the adult prize.

Sister Helen Dulock stated that since there would be a dance on Thanksgiving night she would need some volunteers to work in the kitchen for that night.

The special entertainment committee wants to remind everyone that our annual Christmas party will be held Dec. 11th with our meeting starting at 2:30 p.m. We will take care of the general business and have the installation of officers. From there we will go into our program with the youth club entertaining us. After the program there will be some time allowed for visiting and a few refreshments before the meal. We will have a dance following the meal with Jerry and the Melody Five providing the music for your dancing pleasure. We plan for this to start about 6:30 and go until 10:30, since we realize Monday will be a work day and school day for almost everyone.

Pertaining to the meal, the turkey and dressing will be provided by the lodge but we would like to ask everyone who plans to attend to please bring a dish that will go with this or a dessert. Your cooperation would certainly be appreciated.

Another favor that we want to ask of you is that if you like to sing we will have a choir for that Sunday to sit together to help sing the Christmas carols. If you would like to volunteer, just let Rosemarie Banik know on that day and she will tell you where to sit.

I suppose that is all I have to report at this time but I would like to say again please remember that the Dec. 11th meeting time has been set for 2:30, so we can get the business over and get on to the fun stuff. Sure hope all of you can come so we all can have a real good time. If you aren't there, we will really miss you. I will have another reminder in next week's issue. Until then, I remain.

BITS OF NEWS FROM LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Saturday, Nov. 19th's dance with the great music by the Knights of Dixie, to please everyone, was well attended by a marvelous grdup of guests who filled our Chandelier Ballroom to capacity. The dance was hosted (and in charge) by the handsome Gary Zalesky, who was sporting a moustache, the son of A. J. and Elsie Zalesky. Lovely Marian Kadlecek, also on the Entertainment Comm., was in charge of the box office while Brother Tommy Davis helped Gary with the seating of the guests. In the lobby, Brother Norval and Sister Frances Crossman were busy helping the guests to obtain their advance tickets to the Pre-Thanksgiving dance, Wednesday, Nov. 23rd, with music by Al Marks.

It sure is gratifying to see the interest of our guests in obtaining tickets to our special dances in advance. The annual Christmas dance Saturday, Dec. 10th with music by The Glenn Miller Band is completely sold out, thanks to our patrons. It will be an enjoyable evening to start off the season's holidays.

The honeymooners, Brother Arnold and Sister Naomi Spence, were all smiles and happy, just back from a marvelous cruise to the West Indies for one week on the ship Song of Norway. Everything was great, but two days of sailing were pretty rough, with high winds and waves overlapping the ship, which, of course, made them uncomfortable, but as the weather calmed down, the entertainment and delicious food made up for the lost time. In fact they were ready to make a return trip immediately, after arriving home, but surely they will take a breathing spell.

A happy and jolly wedding anniversary was observed by mr. and Mrs. P. M. Keating with a host of friends around them to wish them the best. They were married in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Nov. 17th, 1941, and enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 36 years and rearing one son, Noble, who is married to Judean, who presented them with two grandchildren, Katheryn, age 5, and Thedeus, age 2 1/_. They danced to a lively tune like two teenagers.

Sister Annie Vale, our kitchen manager, will have her daughter, Mildred, and son-in-law Frank Kucera, and of course, the grandchildren for an old-fashioned Thanksgiving family dinner. I am sure she will enjoy having her close family with her and spending a day cooking in her own kitchen, for a change.

Brother Bobby Allbritton, serving as vice president of the youth club of Lodge 88, enjoyed a quail hunting trip to Rockdale, with his father, Bob, and a friend. Bobby is 11 and some, and does not use a gun yet, but he took lessons from his father and didn't mind getting up at the early hour of 3:30 a.m. to be part of this outing. I was told the hunt was not very successful besides getting only a finger-lickin' taste. Better luck next time, Bobby.

Brother Professor Teofil Halama was having a problem and had surgery which kept him under the weather. Even with 16 stitches on the back of his neck he seemed to be doing fine and sporting a nice smile and not complaining and asking for sympathy. Best of health, Professor Halama, from all of us. Sister Evelyn Jurica spent three days in Parkway Hospital for a general check up; everything is fine, which makes her happy and so are we. Sister Estelle Pokoskia was stricken with a heart attack Tuesday, Nov. 15th, and is now confined in the Bellaire General Hospital where she will have to spend maybe two or three weeks to recuperate. Her daughter, Shirley Klosak, from Fort Worth, spent some time with her mother in the hospital. Estelle is the sister of our sales representative, Agnes Lesak. Oh! yes, by the way, Rudy and Agnes reached their 41st wedding anniversary Oct. 26th. Congratulations!

Sister Polly Dvorak of Norman, Oklahoma spent three days with her father and mother-in-law, Frank Dvorak, to be with them while Frank had his check-up and x-rays taken at the VA Hospital.

Brother Charles Hejda, 8'7, and a member of Lodge 88 for 56 years, decided to make his home at our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville, where he will have the comforts of home. The past few years, Brother Hejda has not been active, but in his younger days he patronized every activity at his Lodge No. 88.

Managers of the Blue Room, Brothers Royal Warnasch and A. J. Stayton, with the cooperation of our Blue Room bartender, Net, are very busy planning the Christmas party for Sunday, Dec. 18th.

The annual Lodge No. 58 Christ-

VESTNfIC mas party will be held Sunday, Dec. 11th, at the Hungerford Community Hall. The regular meeting will start at 1 p.m., with election of officers at the conclusion. I hope all members will make every effort to attend this meeting because it is important to all members and to the officers who work very hard all year.

The youth club meeting will start at 1:30 p.m., with exchanging of gifts between members. We will have door prizes for our guests, plus some games. Then the youth club will present a program for everyone and sing Christmas carols until Santa Claus makes his appearance at 3:45. Santa will greet and visit with all and will give out some goodies to everyone. If you want your child to sit on Santa's lap, please bring your child and also a camera.

We are also asking the good ladies to please bring some sandwiches and sweets for our lunch, afterward. The plates, cups, nalpes kins, tea, coffee and hot chocolate will be furnished by the lodge.

Dear Members and Friends: The SPJST Lodge 177 Academy held their regular monthly meeting Nov. 9th. The meeting was called to order by President Jerry Tomastik, and the pledge was recited.

Roll call of officers showed that all were present.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

All the chairmen's reports were good.

It was decided to sell only 725 tickets to our New Year's Eve dance and you may purchase these tickets at the lodge; also another band was added for New Year's Eve. The two bands will be The Kuntry Kings and American Sunrise. No reservations will be taken — first come, first served! Be sure to get your tickets early for this occasion and come on out where the beat Is

happening.

For our anniversary dance on Dec. 11th, the doors will open at 12 noon, with barbecue sandwiches to go and there will be barbecue plates anytime, also. The free dance will be from 4 until 10 p.m., with music by Otis Beck and The Best Yets, so plan to attend our 3rd grand celebration Sunday, Dec. 11th.

I'm afraid I misled everyone on the election of officers and it was purely a jump of the gun on my part; however, nothing was affected, so maybe we will have an even larger turnout for our real election on Wednesday, Dec. 14th, at 7:30 p.m. Remember, if your voice is not counted you have no say so afterward!

Many improvements have been accomplished at our lodge in the last three years and we are es pec -ialyproudf asphltrking lot and the vapor lights, both of which were sorely needed. Without the help of all the good workers for the lodge and their dedication to their duties on Saturday and Tuesday nights, these would have been hard to accomplish — no one person can be given the credit and the helpers are too numerous to mention with the fear that I would leave out soneone and that would not be right.

This will be my next to last letter written to the Vestnik and I wish to thank Editor Sefeik and his wife, Maxine, for all their good help and for putting up with me again.

I almost forgot the Lodge Christmas party to be held Friday, Dec. 16th for members and invited guests, for dinner and a dance, with music provided by Jerry and The Melody Five. Be sure and come out to a night of great fun and fraternalism, Dec. 16th.

Dear Friends: The Granger SPJST Komensky Lodge No. 20 has scheduled their annual meeting and Christmas party, for Sunday, Dec. 4th, at the SPJST Hall, at 2 p.m.

Dickens on the Strand Saturday, Dec. 10th, Galveston will stage a Dickens on the Strand.

Our lodge will have a shop on the Strand on this date. This will take place on Galveston Strand, "The Old Wall Street of The Southwest," between 20th and 25th (Bath or Rosenberg) Streets. An authentic recreation of a downtown English Street scene of the 1840s-1870s during the holiday season, which' will start from 8 to 11 p.m. B ue norther or rain date will be Sunday, Dec. 17th. The charming Victorian Street atmosphere with quality wares of the 19th century, the bustling busy Strand lives again!

Sixty-five or more shoppes in buildings with shopkeepers selling period wares, by lamplight — and many more vendors on the streets.

There will also be free street entertainment, amusements, street characters, and other diversement of the era: SPJST's shoppe will be known as Codlings. Sea Soup House.

We will serve sea soup (seafood gumbo) in an 8-oz. cup; the price will be $1.25 per cup. An 8-oz. cup measures the same as a medium size bowl, and where can you get a bowl of seafood gumbo for $1.25?

Customers purchasing a cup of seafood gumbo will also get to keep the cup; refills will cost $1.

Gumbo sells anywhere for $2.50 to $3.50 a bowl so this is truly a great bargain. We will also sell gumbo by the quart to go; no matter which way you look at it, you can't go wrong. Our shoppe will portray an Old English waterfront scene: hanging nets, candle light, and to serve you, our ladies will be dressed in long dresses, aprons and the Old English type kitchen caps. The men will wear dark pants and white shirts with the old-time seamen's stocking caps. This should be a sight to see. It will be turning back the century. For your entertainment as our booth we will

11 have accordion music. Our booth space and location will be announced later.

Brother Jerry Kaluza is mending from a dislocated shoulder so we are in hopes that we can find someone who will volunteer to help us.

This will be a Christmas shopper's delight. You will find a rich selection of unusual and delightful items from Dickensonian mouthwatering fare to eye-dazzling Victorian wares, many hand-crafted.

Members are needed to work in our shop. We ask that the ladies wear long dresses with aprons, and men dress casual and wear sailor night caps. Set up time will be during Saturday morning. The shop has to be ready to open at 5:15 p.m.

Fraternally, Audrey Kaluza Entertainment Chairperson - SPJST — HOUSTON CULTURAL SCENE Sunday, Oct. 30th, 1977, Houston was the host to a remarkable company of dancers and musicians of LUCNICA from Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. Under the personal artistic direction of choreographer, Ing. Stefan Nosal, they presented an exciting program of colorful ever-changing ballet idealization of the Slovakian folklore in a creative profile of notable and joyous talent of unbelievable technical skill. The masterful choreography of Stefan Nosal's stage productions were set to a most effervescent and moving musical score predominantly by Svetozar Stracina and also by Miroslav Smid and Juraj Farkos.

It was an afternoon of breathtaking, senses captivating, extravaganza of perfection and I mean PERFECTION — amateur performing excellence. The dancers are all students — all amateurs — as Ing. Nosal told me, and only the leadership: the director, choreographer, musical director, conductor, wardrobe master, etc., are professionals.

The ensemble's performances should certainly be an inspiration to any of our own amateur cultural performing activities, for it showed clearly how much can be accomplished in rehearsals of intensive study under expertise leadership. Even though Lucnica, performances can only serve to our amateurs as a shining example, an ideal of artistic amateur perfection, yet, it can and should encourage every amateur cultural activity's dedication to the art of learning and study, leading to perfection performance ability; this would stimulate interest in our forefathers' Czech language and great cultural heritage as nothing else will.

The audiences' acclaim of Lucnica's performances was most enthusiastically explosive with appreciation and acclaim, and very well joined in the many other accolades listed in the program of this Czechoslovakian Folklore Ballet from Bratislava, the capital of the Slovakian Republica As Ing. Nosal stated, the demands for perfection are the hallmark of the ensembles performances and the foundation of the success.

After the Houston performance, through the kind thoughtfulness of Vernon and Marian McConnell, of Freeport, who were instrumental in bringing Lucnica to the City of Freeport, Sister Birdie Hilsher (Mrs. McConnel's cousin) I, plus others were her guests and so we saw this fabulous artistic ensemble for the second time.

Meeting Ing. Nasal in Houston's Music Hall, it was indeed a pleasure to chat again with this fine artist about matters and thoughts germane to our common professional work in music and choreography. He was very interested in our opinions and comments on the performance and somewhat pleasantly surprised at our way down in Texas understanding and discernment to the new choreographic concepts and creative innovations that he brought us in Lucnica remarkable and outstanding presentations.

Stefan Nosal is a very fine artist, very much interested in our original local choreography of the Folklore Ballet "Dance of the Moravian Maypole" and our "Humoresque," "Polka' and other numbers for which I wrote the musical aeon

12 and Sister Hilsher performed with the dancers on many occasions during our Texas Bicentennial Celebrations. Many of the readers perhaps saw the beautifully costumed designs of this folklore at Sokol Houston's Days of Our Pioneers Bicentennial festivities. Ing. Nosal was glad to see us come to Freeport to enjoy Lucnica's effervescing performance and was somewhat moved when we had to say goodbye, bidding him and the ensemble adieu. Incidentally, on May 7th, Sister Hilsher received from the Secretary of State, of Texas, an official appointment, signed by Madam Betty Andujar, (Governor of Texas on that day), commissioning her under the laws of the State of Texas as "Consultant on Music of Czechoslovakia."

For Lucnica's Sunday performance in Houston, Sister Hilsher gladly shared her box seat reservations with her friends, Calvin and Milada Chervenka, who called her from Temple. Before the program and during intermission Calvin detailed for me much of his thoughts, hopes and desires for dedication to perfection in any activities or performances representing the heritage of the Czech-speaking people of Texas.

Now we have seen the renowned Czechoslovak State Folklore Ballet, the famous Brain dancers and musicians from Brno, Moravia, and the latest, the fabulous Lucnica in Stefan Nosal's creative artistry; certainly, a triumvirate of artistic excellence in the Folkloric Heritage of our Forefathers which together with the scintillating virtuoso performance of the distinguished Prague Charriber Orchestra, represented so ably the glory of the Czechoslovak National Cultural Heritage in our state of Texas.

There also were two outstanding string quartet virtuoso groups performing in Texas, these, however, unfortunately I missed.

ANNIE (ZAIDLE) NOVY

The thirty-seventh person in the SPJST to outlive the actuarial table of her life insurance policy is Annie Novy, residing in Ennis.

Annie (Zaidle) Novy was born in BratIejoy, Czechoslovakia on 13 July 1881. She came to the United States at the age of five with her mother, Frances Zaidle, five brothers, and a sister. Her father, John, died when Annie was four.

Upon disembarking at Galveston the Zaidle Family journeyed to Ellis County, near Ennis, where they settled and spent their entire life farming.

Annie married Adolph Novy on 19 November 1901. Two sons and two daughters were born to this union: George, born 9 October 1904, passed away in December, 1958. He was married to Emily Martinek, who is presently residing in Ennis; Adolph was born 20 February 1907 and died 26 July 1972: He was married to Lillie Honza who lives in Ennis; daughter Mary died at the age of ten; daughter Annie was born 21 January 1912 and is married to Frank Martinek and she and her husband also reside in Ennis. Both are SPJST members.

Sister Novy has seven grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

Adolph Novy was also a member of the SPJST until he passed away on Dec. 2, 1937. Sister Novy holds membership in Lodge 25 in Ennis, having joined that lodge on May 14, 1911. She resides in the Ennis Nursing Home and is bedridden.

She is the last surviving member of her family.

SPJST — TWENTY COUPLES "DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY" TO AID THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY The Leon County American Cancer Society held a Dance-a-Thon in Centerville, Nov. 4th and 5th, 1977, hosted by the SPJST Youth Club. The dance which began at midnight Friday and ended at noon Saturday, made over $1,700 for the Cancer fund.

Twenty couples from Centerville, Buffalo, Oakwood, and Leon participated in the dance. Honorable mention, a blue ribbon and $10, went to Jamie Clute and Susan Carpenter, Bubba Oden and Rhonda Dartez, and Gay Carrigan and Bennie Coleman. A red ribbon and $5 went to Mia Dartez.

Centerville ladies donated the sandwiches and/or money and Mrs. Barbara Dixon was in charge of the concessions, all night long.

YOUTH SECTION From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 50, EL CAMPO Dear Readers, The El Campo Lodge No 50 Youth Club met Nov. 16th at 7:413 p.m. at the home of Bennie Bartos. The meeting was opened with the pledge of allegiance by President Leeana Shimek.

Secretary Veronica Bartos read the minutes of the last meeting.

Treasurer Gregory Goerig gave the treasurer's report.

Leeana Shimek gave a report on the District VI meeting, which was held in October in Sweet Home.

We discussed the Christmas party to be held after our regular meeting next month. The youth drew names to exchange gifts.

We made craft which, will be used to decorate our adult lodge Christmas party next month.

The mothers present were Mrs. Anna Bartos, Mrs. Cynthia Goerig, Mrs. Georgie Henderson and Mrs. Bernice Rek. Our next meeting will be held Dec. 14th.

Susie Evans led us in the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Secretary Karol Alexander read the register, which revealed there were 12 members and two adults present. We also had the minutes from the last meeting read and they stood approved as read.

The old business concerned how well the Fall Festival went over, and that next year, we need to get more youth to sell chili tickets. The new business was the dance that was scheduled for Nov. 19th. Also our new reporter is Herman Ging.

LODGE NO. 142, HOUSTON Dear Readers, On Friday, Nov. 11th our youth club had their regular monthly meeting. Carol Lueckemeyer called the meeting to order with Linda Norris acting as secretary. The treasurer's report was read.

We enjoyed an evening of Putt Putt Golf Oct. 21st and afterward we stopped for pizza and drinks. A special thanks to Mrs. Steve Janik for helping car pool us kids.

We discussed a Christmas program to be held at our lodge on Friday, Dec. 16th. We are also selling tickets for a hand crocheted afghan to be given away that same night. Another thank you to Mrs. Janik for donating it to the youth club.

It was agreed to send donations to the various organizations for Christmas. They are the Salvation Army and the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes. We will send Christmas cheer and baskets to the shut-ins, and money donations to the Chrismas Seals.

On Dec. 29th, 1920, he married Louise Lukas in Cuero.

Funeral services were held for Brother Bartos on Thursday, Sept.

22nd at Freund Funeral Chapel, with Rev. John Wagner of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of San Antonio officiating. Interment was in the Westhoff Cemetery.

ALFRED E. HERBELIN, age 88, of 3709 Del Norte, who died Friday, Oct. 28th, 1977 in a Fort Worth hospital of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services were held Oct. 31st at 10 a.m. in St. Luke's Catholic Church in Temple, with the Rev. Ed Jordan officiating. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery at Waco.

Brother Herbelin was serving as regional attorney with the Texas Department of Agriculture. He had been Assistant Attorney General for the State of Texas, acting chief attorney for the Veterans Administration in San Antonio, and Waco assistant district attorney. He was a retired Lt. Col in the U.S. Air Force and had served with the staff of the judge advocat's office during World War II. Brother Herbelin was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Temple and was a graduate of Waco schools and Baylor University Law School.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lillian Herbelin of Temple; a sister, Mrs. Adrienne Simpson of Gainsville and several nieces and nephews.

The first board of directors was elected in July 1928. The meeting was held in the hall of the local SPJST Lodge Na. 15, at Buckholts. Gin manager was John Stasa.

Frank Zajicek Family

I have mentioned the Frank Zajicek family briefly before and I want to elaborate more about them. They were our across-theroad neighbors whom we saw frequently.• We visited many times, especially when they used to come to our new country home and spend the night with us when a storm was brewing. The Zajicek family had a freakish misfortune.

One night when either a tornado or some sort of severe wind storm came through this area, their house was picked up off the blocks and moved several feet. This frightened them a bit, so whenever they saw dark clouds in the sky they would head for the Stasa home to spend the night. The children loved it and the families usually had a night's visit.

Aloise and Frank Zajicek were married in 1912. Aloise was born July 26th, 1890 at Nelsonville and died July 10th, 1974 in Cameron hospital. Frank died July 10, 1973, and Raymond, their son on Dec. 9, 1973. Mrs. Zajicek passed away on the day of her son's funeral. Their survivors are: Albert of Houston, Rudolf of Dallas, Edwin of Buckholts, Ben of Cameron, CM Sgt.

Where the Zajicek and Petruy farms were located there was a branching off of a road which led to Little River •and past our farm.

If you continued south, then turned left you eventually would arrive at the Corinth Community, and eventually back in Buckhoits.

The John Stasa Farm In December of 1911 my parents, the Josef Stasas, moved to Rosenberg, including my sister's family, the Poborils and Hatlas. While in Rosenberg we made good crops in 1912 and 1913, except for one problem; we had more rain than we needed and it ruined our cotton crop and if you loose your cotton crop you have no income. My parents felt uneasy, so they decided to move back to Buckholts. They found the Joe Mondrick old home place for sale at Buckholts and bought it. The price was $90 per acre, which was too high and I think it was a bad step. We moved back in 1913 and bought an additional 741/2 acres from the Martin Ermis estate, paying the same price per acre.

On Feb. 14, 1914, I married Miss Albina Poboril, daughter of Frank and Marie Poboril of the Seaton community. In 1916 my wife and I bought the 74 1/2 acres from my mother and father -- the price was the same, $90 per acre. After I bought this farm I discovered it was a historical place. It was part of the J. A. DePena eleventh league grant which covered several thousand acres, from Little River to Big Elm Creek, from Corinth school district to the Bell County line.

This was also a part of the Major Benjamin Bryant grant for services rendered and was divided among his children. One of his daughters married F. M. Blankenship, who in turn sold to Martin Ermis and to Stew..

In 1840 there was a U.S. Post Office and a hotel on the farm as it was on the Oki Mexico trail. Nearby, on the river bank was an army post. When we moved on this farm there were several graves of Major Benjamin Bryant and family

in the pasture. Sometime in the 1930s when I was out walking I discovered that our fence was torn down, where entry had been made during the night and the tombstones and remains of the Bryant family had been removed.

Previously there had been a proposal adopted in the State Legislature to have all war heroes moved to Austin. Jeff Camp was County Judge of Milam County at the time and he had proposed this be done. It happened elsewhere. Why they did this secretly, I do not know. In this locality we had a permanent spring of flowing water, which probably was a deciding factor for someone to settle down among the pioneers.

On our 741/2 acres we raised cotton, corn, and in our small pasture we grazed a couple of cows and working horse and mules. We worked from sunrise to sundown, many times the cows were milked after dark, if it was cotton picking season. I planted many fruit trees, pecans, and my wife provided the family with a good garden of vegetables. Most of the fruit and vegetables were canned for the Winter months. Very little was bought at the grocery store, as we had hogs to butcher in the winter, beef in the summer and chicken was eaten the year around. We had work and more work.

On April 2, 1914, in Buckholts, our first child was born, a son named Stanley, whom we lost in 1915. He was buried at Bryant Station Cemetery. In 1918, for a brief time I operated a blacksmith sh0P in the Seaton community where our second child was born on March 2, 1916. Lillie is married to John Huber of Austin, and they have two grown daughters, Paula and Nancy. Olga was born on Feb. 22, 1918, in Buckholts, and is married to Emil Malay of Corpus Christi. They have one daughter, Janet Markus and grandson, John T. Markus. Annie was born April 14th, 1919 in Buckholts, she is married to Roy Peal of Corpus Christi, and they have two sons, Sam and Patrick. Five grandchildren. Johnny was born Sept. 29, 1922. His first marriage was to Helen Barcak of Hallettsville and they have two sons, John D. and Allen. His second marriage was to Elsie Obelechner and they have four children: Larry, Don, Kathy

and Dennis and five grandchildren.

In 1922 we built a new home, one and one-half stories, 28 by 48 feet, consisting of five rooms and two porches, plus the storage upstairs. I assisted the carpenter, Mr. (Charles Tydlacka„ whose wages were $8 for a ten-hour work day.

Helpers were paid $1 to $1.50 for a day's work. The mason charged '3 per day to build a brick chimney. The total cost was $2,450. My friend, Mr. Hamusek, contracted the painting, inside and out for t20. This home became a stopping place for most of the out-of-town Sokol organizers (a Czech gymnastic organization), the Farm Bureau representatives and those connected with the SPJST Society. A frequent visitor during those years was Josef Havranek and his wife who came to the U.S. from Czechoslovakia to organize and instruct the members. Professor Havranek was a very active person and his wife assisted him. She came from Cleveland, Ohio. In 1925, Professor Havranek held Czech classes for two months during the summer in the Buckholts school house. Another frequent guest was L. 0.

We sold the farm to Sefold, Yearby, and Jenkins, Cotton Dinners of Temple, in 1934 and moved to Holland, where I ventured into my own business of cotton ginning and operating a grocery store.

In 1952 the Henry Vaculin family became the owners of our farm and are still residing on it.

To the south of us was the Sam Henderson, Sr. farm and son Sam, Jr. This land bordered the Little River on the south and it also had the Bryant Station Cemetery on it. The Hendersons bought this farm after World War I and were our neighbors until we moved away in 1934. On the southside of Little River bridge there were two 'acres df beautiful wooded land which were excellent for public use such as picknicking, swimming and recreation. The Baptist Congregation used to hold their prayer meetings there during the summer, where families practically established temporary homes for these meetings. Sometimes the services lasted for six weeks, several families brought their milk cows. These meetings were held during the years we lived on the farm at Bryant Station.

Wednesday, November 30, 1977 Near this area quite a large number of acres were owned by the Ifetiiihny Brothers who owned other firms and businesses around Holland and Heidenheimer. There Was an exchange of many tenants who had lived in the rent houses.

The MeWhinnys sold off about 200 acres to Rudolph Kral after World War I and this was rented to Barth Mathis for many years. Another large land owner at the time was John Mohelnik, a Czech, who owned about 320 acres about four miles toward Davilla.

On the west side of the Stasa farm were 50 acres owned by Joe Kostiha in 1900 and it sold to John Svetlik and later to Joe Pecena in 1918. Edwin Kohutek rented the farm for a number of years. The Gersbachs owned the adjoining farm and another 70 acres were owned by a family named Cook.

In 1915 the inhabitants on the east side of our farm were: the Morgans, Coles, Harrises, Butterfields, Brenhams, Ben Mauldins, Joe Mauldin, Ezzells, Jim Mitchel, Marvin Mitchel, Hame, H. H. Hartsville, Stafords, Podany, Ruzicka, and others. These families farmed the land located between Bryant Station and Corinth road on the south side and between Little River. On the north side were the Frank Zajiceks, Joe Mondrick farm bought by Joe Stasa, Sr., in 1913, and Charles Ermis' 100 acre tenant farm. Albert Podany and John Laza farmed this land for many years.

moved from Rosenberg to Holland, where Joe bought a farm. Joe married Miss Agnes Machalicek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Machalicek of Schulenburg, in June of 1922.

Mrs. Agnes Stasa's father was a widower and in 1923 he moved in with Joe and Agnes. He lived with them until his death. Agnes was in bad health and was placed in a nursing home at Schulenburg in 1949 and died there in 1951.

Joe and Agnes sold their farm before her death and Joe moved to the August Kaeir farm near Rogers where he lived until his death. He died April 17th, 1953, on this farm.

Funeral services were held April 20, 1953 at Marek-Burns Funeral Home in Cameron. The body was cremated in Dallas. Joe was a member of Lodge No. 80 Tyrs, SPJST in Holland. The SPJST officials conducted the services, August Kacir, attorney for the Supreme Lodge and Brother J. H. Hurta, Supreme Lodge RVOS, and also Joe Zajicek, vice president of local Lodge No. 80, Holland. Joe and Agnes Stasa did not have any children.

In 1923 I was elected school trustee at Bryant Station and also during the same year I was appointed road overseer by the county commissioner.

In 1925 Mrs. Jim "Ma" Ferguson from Temple was elected Governor of Texas. She was the first and only woman elected to this office.

She ran on a political ticket opposing the Ku Klux Klan, which was powerful in the 1920s.

The Great Depression — 1929 In 1929 we had the Great Depression when our economy completely collapsed. First of all the stock market crashed, many businesses and stockbrokers went out of business, many committed suicide because they lost "everything." People stopped buying, layoffs resulted and with this there were too many people unemployed. People were hungry and stood ,in the bread and soup lines to survive.

President Herbert C. Hoover kept promising that prosperity was just around the corner. Cotton was 5 cents per pound, corn 18 cents a bushel, oats 12 cents per bushel, and cattle from 4 to 5 cents per lb. When World War I veterans marched to Washington asking for employment, President Hoover called the U. S. Army to get them out. It was difficult for President Hoover to handle this crisis.

People took to the road, traveling to other places, hoping there would be something better elsewhere. At this time California seemed to be the favorite state, however, the situation was not any better there. Many people were desperate, they defaulted on their loans, lost their homes, farms and businesses. On March 4, 1933 Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president and at his inaugural address he re-assured the people that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." He started many work programs and later the Social Security program.

Mrs. Ferguson's second administration began Jan. 17, 1933, the period of hard times. Texas got an

amendment authorizing $20,000,000 of "bread bonds" to feed the hungry.

,Me and my family were among those who decided to move from Buckholts to Cameron where we started a dairy farm on Dec. 1, 1931. The farm and ranch was on the north side of Cameron where there was even more work and less profit. Before the year was over we moved back to Bryant Station on our farm and with Mr. Robert Lehman, we bought two large trucks to haul cotton to Houston.

We had a lot of friends in Holland and we tried to make a living but competition was something else, there were four gins in a small town. The income was seasonal. I made a contract with a cotton ginner who wanted to buy my gin and sold it.

In 1936 I attended the SPJST Convention in East Bernard, representing Lodge 80, Holland, and served as convention secretary.

Another Move

In 1936 we moved to Temple, and opened a new cafe in the Professional Building. My daughter, Olga, married Emil Malay from Holland, Dec. 26, 1936. They lived in our Holland house until we sold it and we rented a house until we bought the E. B. Echols house in 1937.

At this time Mrs. Annie Kamenicky (a widow) from Pettibone put her gin on the market which we purchased. Again we had two businesses to attend to at the same time where my wife and I moved to Pettibone and left the children in C. C. Davis Temple to run the cafe. We needed entertainment as this was before the days of television. The Majek Orchestra became famous over the state about this time and played for many dances in the general area.

Later, when they moved to Corpus Christi they recorded a number of polka records. The Baca, orchestra was also popular. I believe the Vrazel Band organized after we moved to Corpus Christi. They also recorded a number of records and are in great demand for their music.
