FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Many Years Have Passed since the first Thanksgiving Day, so beautifully described in the American history, was observed by the group of 102 Pilgrims, who on Sept. 6th, 1620 landed at Plymouth Rock and founded a colony, which became the basis of the New En g -landstaes. These many years have been good and bad years; years of challenge and great achievement; years of almost unbelievable progress. Through the centuries that followed, the spirit of the first Thanksgiving Day has prevailed in all its solemn magnificence. An American cannot but compare his way of life with the many less fortunate nations who still live in oppression and dictatorial servitude. As a result of such a comparison, he must be thankful for the gifts of life. In spite of all the sacrifices our nation has made in the past and is now making at this present time to preserve and keep the flame of freedom and human dignity burning, the world seems to remain unlearned, the swords that were to be beaten into plowshares, continue to be a dangerous weapon. We Americans are being forced to participate in a painful struggle for freedom, for which we pay an incredibly high price daily. Nevertheless, by bringing this supreme sacrifice, we manage to maintain and defend the freedom within

THANKSGIVING Thankful for wonderful years that have flown. Like beautiful blossoms faded and gone. Thankful for sunshine and summer and rain; Thankful that wrong can be righted again. Thankful for friends that are true and sincere; Thankful for each precious day of the year. Thankful for more than I know or can see; Thankful for all Thou has given to me —Bert Gamble. our own shores. * * In this issue, on page 6, are the guidelines of the Publication Committee. Since then we have received numerous requests to publish the origin of Beseda and we will attempt to do so by translating from an 1890 edition. of Otto's Czech

Encyclopedia: "Beseda is a Czech salon (a large ballroom) dance performed by four couples formed in the form of a square. it was originated in 1863 at the suggestion of Jan Neruda who was inspired by a dance teacher, Karl Linka, who was teaching characteristic Czech national dances in agreeable fourcouple figures similar to a quadrille (French a la cour) and assembled as such. Each part consists of two sections, the first followed by the "furiant." It consists of the following national dances: polka, sousedska (waltz tempo), rejdovak and rejdovacka, obkrocak, rezanka, dvojpolka, kalamajka, hulan, irttt, elka and strasak. (These are in different tempos and are hard to translate to English. For instance, one of them includes the "Finger dance?) The music to Czech national songs sung while performing these dances most often was composed by Ferdinand Heller. There was other music composed by K. Klepse, A. J. Svoboda, and V. B. Janda. They used other songs of national origin of Czech, Moravian and Slovak descent which, in turn, became the Moravian and Slovakian Beseda, however, none became as popular as the one composed by Ferdinand Heller (which has survived to this date). The Beseda was first danced in Novemlaer, 1863, by 24 couples in Konvitsky Hall in Prague and soon spread throughout all of the prov-
