FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Welcome new members — The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas has welcomed many new members into its ranks during the last year. Such a record is a wonderful tribute to the unsurpassed quality of excellent fraternal benefits and especially to the dedicated, hard-working men and women who consistently enroll new members.

During 1977 which is the 80th anniversary of our SPJST Society, let us redouble our efforts to welcome new members. Let us make sure that they are invited to the meetings by asking them to attend with us. Let us give them an opportunity to take an active part by serving on committees, participating in fraternal projects, and enjoying our social affairs.

More important than anything else, let us make sure we extend a cordial invitation and extend our hands to them in a friendly spirit instead of a lukewarm one.

Keep in mind that a friendly spirit is the foundation of a continuous participation on a largescale of any lodge as well as a major objective of the SPJST. Let us rededicate ourselves to its ideals and put renewed enthusiasm into carrying them out. "HELP BUILD YOUR FRATERNITY DURING 1977!"

It may sound that we are repeating ourselves, but it's true:

TRUE LIFE That man is the richest whose pleasures are the cheapest.

It is characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things.

There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.

Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify. Simplify.

Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.

It takes two to speak the truth — one to speak and another to hear. dreams are made real by people who plan ahead with life insurance. A complete sound holding is the key to financial security and guarantee of peace of mind.

Insurance dollars work like dollars in trust. No matter how much is paid in toward the face value of the policy, in case of death the beneficiary gets the full sum. And all the while (in life) the policy is being paid for, its cash value goes up.

Life insurance planning is the means by which people share the common risks of dying too soon or living too long — dying while loved ones depend on our income, or outliving our span of earning years so that we become dependent on others, as another writer so

aptly put it.

When this insurance is purchased through a fraternal, it is also endowed with a 'heart' — the heart of a composite-minded group of people who look to each other in the sense of "brothers" and strive for a brotherhood community.

This is why invariably the organs of the fraternals set high examplee of charity, the love of country, the importance of home and family as the core of strength of the American free society. At the same time emphasis is placed on independence, resourcefulness, self-reliance. The fraternals are proud of the fact they take care of their own.

The SPJST certainly is such a fraternal society which practices all of the above mentioned with its rest homes and enthusiastic youth program, etc.

The fraternals have a wonderful future if all the members work together. The proud past then can evolve into a greater future.

• It was at this time of the year (after Labor Day), that the father of your editor, Brother Jos. Sefcik, Sr., passed away, 18 years ago. He was a good father, a loyal citizen of his new native land, the United States, who with our mother, did their best to teach all of us children to be good citizens and to appreciate our many freedoms. As a father for many of today's youth, he would not pass, for he was a firm man and let us children understand that we were not to have to be asked or told to do something but one time; however, probably we should have more fathers like him. We honor his knowledge and what he taught, and will honor his memory as long as we live. * * Across the street from our of-. fice is a service station operated by a Mr. Raymond Krenek and his son, Johnny. On the same property is an auto repair business operated

by Mr. Henry Urbanovsky, brother of our past SL Secretary Raymond Urbanovsky. Henry is a very good mechanic and, one day at noon while getting gasoline at the station, Henry was there and said to Mr. Krenek, "Say, Raymond, Rudy was in the automotive business once, show him that old bill you have for repairs."

Of course, everyone who must purchase any type of product knows what inflation has done to the price of things, so I thought this might interest our readers.

Mr. Krenek pulled out his billfold and written on the back of a bank check from the 1930s was the bill from a Mr. Walter Schutza for overhauling Mr. Krenek's 1929 6cylinder Chevrolet truck in 1933.

NEWSBRIEFS Alois Ondrej, 91, of West, died Saturday, August 27th, 1977, in the West Community Hospital. Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Kotch Funeral Home in West, with Rev. Jerry Mosmann officiating; burial followed at St. Martin's Cemetery in Tours. Brother Ondrej was a member of Lodge No. 167, Penelope.

• • Matcek Reunion The Matcek family reunion will be held Sunday, Sept. 11th, at SPJST Hall Lodge 39, Bryan. Each family is asked to bring a covered dish. Come early so everyone can visit with all of the relatives.

Lunch will be served at 12 noon.

Plan to come and stay all day.

Walter Matcek, Jr. • • Surovilu-Nedbalek Reunion The annual Surovik-Nedbalek Reunion will be held Sunday, Sept.

18th, 1977, at the Nelsonville Hall in Nelsonville. A family-style lunch will be served. Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch.

Drinks, cups, plates, napkins, and eating utensils will be provided.

Frances (Surovik) Vinyard • • The records of the XXLInd SPJST Convention Chorus have been received. Copies are available through the distributor, Lodge 88 Choral Group, 1435 Beall St., Houston, Tx 77008. The record comes in a beautiful colored jacket. Prices: $4.50 if locally purchased; $5 by mail. Both, prices include tax. This is a recording of the Chorus' performance on Wednesday evening of the last —NAM convention.

• • Chartering ceremonies have been set for Sunday, Nov. 27th, for Lodge No. 185 New Braunfels. The ceremonies will be held in the American Legion Hall in that city. Officials from the Supreme Lodge will be in charge of the chartering ceremonies.

THE PRESIDENTS OFFICE To: All Lodges That Had or Have Lodge Buildings Dear Brothers and Sisters: As part of the history of the SPJST that I have been assigned to write, I plan to include a chapter on the lodges. In that chapter, I plan to include and am hereby requesting the following: 1) A picture(s) of the current lodge hall or building, to include information as to when the building was constructed, dedicated, location, and dimensions. (Note: Those lodges that have been built and dedicated since 1969 need not furnish this information because we have it here in the Supreme Lodge; they need only furnish us with the picture.)

2) We would also need picture(s) of the earlier or former lodge buildings, that have either since been replaced by newer buildings, sold, or torn down. In addition to this picture, we- would appreciate the date that the hall was constructed, and the date of sale, replacement, or dismantling. In other words, we want to show the present buildings, but we also want to show previous buildings that served as lodge halls so that the historical, picture will be more complete. The plan is to publish one picture of the former structure and one picture of the new structure.

3) Further: A listing of the first officers of the lodge. This information is not available here.

Do not send us a list of the charter members because we do have that here; we are only requesting that if your lodge minutes give the information, that you send us a list of the first officers of the lodge. It may be that this information is not available because of incomplete or absence of old lodge minutes due to fire, etc.

4) If available, furnish us with a picture of the original officers of

the lodge. (This likewise may not be available.)

5) At some later date, I will request a picture of the officers serving at the time, but that will have to wait because there will most certainly be changes between now and the time the book is published and we want the information to be as current at that time as possible.

In the event that there are several pictures available of older installations, send us the one that you deem mpst suitable and that is most clear and sharp for publishing.

I realize that the chapter on the lodges will come toward the end of the book, but we must start assembling this information well ahead of time. Your cooperation will be sincerely appreciated. Anyone having any questions may direct them to my office. The work on compiling this history has already been started and is progressing.

REPORTS DISTRICT II SALES REPRESENTATIVE'S REPORT Sales in July were good, 68 members for $503,000 in insurance sales, for a total of 530 members for $2,563,500 in insurance sales.

Sister Barbara Cherry, Rockdale Lodge 174, joined us as a new sales representative and made her first sale. Best of luck to you Sister Cherry.

LODGE NO. 189, BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION Lodge 189 met recently for their August meeting. We had a good turnout despite the fact that so many members were taking advantage of the last few days of vacation before school started.

Regina Novosad, youth club reporter, led the members in the pledge of allegiance. All reports were given and approved as read.

A committee was elected to prepare a copy of rules and regulations for our lodge. As soon as it is completed it will be given to the members for approval. Members on this committee are: John Skrabanek, Don Helton, Ernest Wentrcek, Mary Ann Novosad, Jerry Vytopil, Joe Novosad and Frank Scott.

All members were asked to keep their eyes open for a possible building site. We are very fortunate to have several real estate salesmen in our lodge. I know this will prove very helpful. Members elected to the Land Committee are: Jane Schultz, Clarence Ebner, Frank Scott, and Ernest Wentrcek.

Due to her accident our financial secretary, Josephine Shenkir, will be unable to continue with her duties. The members elected Charlene Helton to take over as financial secretary. Mikulas for being so understanding and helpful during our recent visit to the Supreme Lodge. With the assistance you gave, I know Charlene will do a great job in the future.

On behalf of all our members, I would like to wish Brother Francis Bond a speedy recovery. He is recovering at home after heart surgery in Houston. We miss you and are looking forward to the time when you will once again be a part of our meetings.

I would like to urge everyone to attend our next meeting. It will be held Sunday, Sept. 11th, at 3:30 p.m. at the KC Hall. Our next few meetings may possibly be the most important ones that we ever have.

We will be adopting our rules and regulations as well as electing new officers and committeemen for the up-coming year. This is your lodge and your ideas do count. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at our next meeting.

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Readers: Lodge No. 6 held its September meeting on Sunday, August 28, at 3:30 p.m. Youth Club members Terry and Eddie Hykel led the membership in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the American flag.

Eddie then said the SPJST pledge.

There were 20 members present at this meeting and we had two guests, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lucien. All reports were approved as read.

In the youth report, Sister Schuetz reported that the youth had gone to the rest home on August 10th. They will go again on Sept. 14th. State YAD will be held at Temple on Sept. 25th. Lodge No. 6 will have several participants in this competition and members are urged to attend to give your support of the lodge.

Youth members having birthdays during the month of September include Lillian Perez and Therese Dobecka. Karen Hykel brought the birthday cake.

Sister Lydia Dobecka reported sending the following cards for the month of August: birthday — Fred Monthei, Theresa Snider, L. B. Dobecka, Adelle Royal, Georgia

Wachsmann, Rose Uptmor, and Vickie Anderson; anniversary congratulations were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Mynas; baby congratulations were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Barret Ivy, parents of a baby boy.

September birthdays include Aubrey Uptmor, Ruthie Schuetz, Eddie Marek, and Stella Perez; anniversaries — Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Krizan.

ATTENTION! MEMBERS OF LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Members: Lodge No. 66 will hold our regular meeting on Sunday, Sept. lath. We will serve lunch at 12 noon. We ask the ladies of the lodge to bring enough food for their family. The luncheon is for members and their immediate family. Please bring a meat, salad, vegetable and dessert, enough for your family.

This meeting will be a little different; we will be honoring our last 10 presidents of our lodge. Immediately after lunch the youth club will hold their meeting, then short business meeting.

There will be a free appreciation dance from 4-8 p.m. This dance is for everyone, all of Linden Hall's friends who have attended our dances and other func tions over the years. This is our way of saying THANKS. Music will be furnished by . Jerry Haisler and The Melody Five.

We invite everyone to attend the dance, and members, come early for the lunch and meeting. Come and enjoy yourself.

All officers were present at the meeting.

There was one transfer and we gained 23 new members.

All chairpersons gave their respective reports, including Vice President Bill Hutka who gave a report on the board meeting held in July in the absence of Dorothy Massey.

We will soon install a new sign near the highway for our lodge and hopefully new people will have an easier time finding us on Tuesday and Saturday nights.

A motion was made and second ed to make a donation to the Deaf and Muth Association, also to our own Little River Fire Department.

The Auditing Committee was to audit the books, August 15th.

Game night is still a big success but it is a shame we have such a big membership and they all sit back and say we belong to Lodge 177 and then never offer to help out. Louis, Jean, and Dorothy Driska, plus Otis Beck, do so need your help to continue game nights or this may become a thing of the past because the four cannot and will not go on working every Tuesday night without your help; so to those of you who come only when something is free, remember your help on Tuesday night is also free. Please offer to help.

Don't forget our next meeting Sept. 7th, at 7:30 p.m. Be there; you may hear and learn something about your lodge.

Surprise, surprise, our loveable, charitable and always willing to help in any way possible and a regular guest at Table No. 8 did not show up at the last Saturday dance with her escort, instead, guess what? — without a word of warning to anyone at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 20th, 1977, our dear Sister Naomi Kostom and Brother Arnold Spencer tied the knot of matrimony, to cherish each other for all times to come. We all suspected the results of this romance, but they succeeded in surprising all of us. They make a lovely couple and all our best wishes go out to them from our hearts. Best wishes to the bride, Naomi, and congratulations to Arnold, now Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Spencer.

A beautiful wedding took place Saturday, August 27th, 1977, at 6 p.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Sister Frances Elizabeth Vala was married to Mr. Will Carr Reynolds, Jr. The bride wore a gorgeous traditional white wedding gown and flowing veil. The bride was given away by her brother-in-law, Julius Pa ylas.Frances is the daughter of our Sister Annie Vala and the late Brother Drill Vala. In the wedding party were three of Frances 4 sisters: Helen Pavlas, Mildred Kucera, and Margarette Migl, and friend Evelyn Bowlin. Walking with the maid of honor, Helen Pavlas, were her nieces who are identical twins, Marlene and Darlene Migl, ages 5 years. The dainty little flower girl Rebeca, age 3, the daughter of Mildred Kucera, was precious. All were dressed in green satin gowns and flowers to match. Serving as best man was Mr. David Inkster.

Groomsmen were John L. Southeiand, Stephen 0. Smith, and Derick A. Hankins. Serving as ushers were James R. Bolick and Louis S. Joseph; all wore dark tuxedos.

The bride's mother Annie Vala wore a blue chiffon gown and looked beautiful. The groom's attractive mother Mrs. Reynolds wore a flowing peach chiffon and matching flower in her hair; also present was Mrs. Louise L. Stray, the groom's great-great aunt. She wore a rose chiffon gown and it was her birthday, a gracious lady of 82 years. After the wedding ceremony the lavish reception was held at Brae-Burn Country Club with a buffet dinner, refreshments and

dance with music by the Space City Dutchmen Orchestra. Sister Annie raised four beautiful daughters and now all are married. Annie is a very active member and Frances served our lodge as recording secretary for two years; I must say very efficiently. We all wish this lovely couple happiness.

A silver wedding anniversary of 25 years was celebrated by two nice people, Brother Alex and Sister VTiLhelmina Mendoiza on August 28th, 1977, at Lodge 88 from 2. to 6 p.m. with many friends and family to wish them continuous happiness. Wilhelmina wore a becoming yellow chiffon gown and Alex was dressed in a white suit. Their daughters Kathy and Becky were in line to greet the guests with their parents. (In 1974 Becky was chosen as queen in District V.) Family present was Sister Delores and husband Pio Villarreal, Alex's brother Arthur and wife Connie Mendoza and aunt and uncle Consuelo Macias from San Antonio.

A large lavishly decorated wedding cake created by Wilhelmina's sister Dolores was just out of this world. Also, a buffet with delicious food and refreshments was served throughout the evening. It was a lovely party and our best wishes go out to Alex and Wilhelmina. Congratulations!

At Table No. 10 Mr. Finley and Ordelee Dittman celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary with friends, Kermit and Isabella Tsceidel and Roland and Dorothy Ziese.

They danced to the requested tune "Anniversary Waltz." These three couples are our regular Saturday night guests and enjoy it and we are glad to have you. Congratulations!

Della Mae Glumb at Table No. 7 was in a jolly mood to celebrate her birthday , with husband Frank and several friends surrounding their table. Their request for the "Rangers Waltz" was granted and they enjoyed it. Happy birthday, Della Mae! At Table No. 24 we had a guest from San Diego, Calif. Mrs. Louise Jennings spent two weeks here in Houston with friends. With her were regular Saturday night guests, Mr. and Mrs. B. Hopkins, Mr. and Mrs. E. Duke and Mr. and Mrs. C. Wassermann. They all had an enjoyable time as they always have coming to Lodge 8& Mrs. Jennings

Three couples, all members of Lodge 88, enjoyed a wonderful cruise. They are: Bennie and Stacey Kocich, Milert and Evelyn Antrich, and Henry and Millie Hrncir, who went on this fabulous Norwegian cruise on the ship, Song of Norway, to the Dominican Republic, they enjoyed San Juan and the Virgin Islands and other places.

They left August 6th and returned August 13th with memories of good times and company. Bennie, Stacy, Milert and Evelyn are members of our busy Entertainment Committee, and tack time off to go on this cruise.

Dear Members: I was grateful to read in the August 17th, 1977, issue of the Vestnik about the Seaton Czech Brass Band written by Sister Rita Batla and sent in by Brother Nick Morris. The article was nicely written and the picture shows a well-balanced musical aggregation. They should all be congratulated and given all possible support and encouragement.

There is a real need for such musical organizations in our Czech communities to preserve the fine Czech compositions as well as the stirring marches by Sousa and the poetic overtures by various composers, and played with full instrumentation. It used to be traditional to have a band concert at every Czech celebration but this has been sadly lacking for many years now. Perhaps we shall have revival.

This is what we are trying to do :it Lodge 88; the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra played at our Homecoming celebration on August 14th, and the huge turnout of members enjoyed the music by their own concert orchestra as attested by their enthusiastic applause. We will play again at our annual Czech Day celebration later in October of this year.

By the way, we rehearse every Wednesday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the lodge building, 1435 Beall Street, Houston. All musicians, young and old, within commuting distances, please come and

LODGE NO. 87; TEMPLE Lodge No. 87 held their regular meeting Friday evening, August 12th at 7:30 p.m. with President Louis Marek presiding.

Brother Jerry Valchar led members in reciting the pledge of allegiance. The members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased member Johnny Lugo.

The lodge accepted Mike Mercer as a new member.

It was announced that lodge members and guests are welcome to enjoy the outdoor recreation area on the lodge property for picnics or outings during the week days, Monday through Friday.

A long-time member of Lodge 87, Brother J. V. Kohut, is reported to be on the sick list. He lives at 708 E. Central, in Temple.

The next lodge meeting will be held Sept. 9th, at 7:30 p.m. A covered dish supper will be served; members are to bring a covered dish of meat and vegetable or dessert for family and guests. Try to be present for the September meeting.

MINUTES OF THE DISTRICT FALL MEETING, 1977

The District II fall meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. Sunday, August 14th, 1977 at Lodge 29, Taylor, by President Monica Ivicie.

Edwin Adamek, President of Lodge No. 29, Taylor, gave a welcome to all those attending the meeting.

The pledge of allegiance was led

Respect was paid for our deceased SPJST members with a minute of silence.

The roll call of officers indicated that all were present. The roll call of lodges indicated that Tayor had the most members present with 50.

They were closely followed by Seaton with 32 members attending the meeting. Lodges not represented were Buckholts, Cameron, Lovelady, Rosebud, and Rockdale.

Secretary Mary Dubec read the minutes of the spring meeting.

They were approved as read.

The treasurer's report by Edwin Adamek indicated that there was $244.72 in the Officers' Fund and $1,049.35 in the Youth Fund.

A report on camp was made by District Youth Counselor Frank Klinkovsky. He reported that some items were left behind at the camp which was attended by approximately 190 persons. AU attending had a great time, with no accidents reported. Youth Counselor Klinkovsky also stated that, after this meeting, the youth and chaperones would go to Murphy Park for swimming and golf. An after-camp get-together will also be planned for the leaders and chaperones of District II. Jerry Mikulas, financial secretary brought greetings from the Supreme Lodge. He stated his pleasure at the way the SPJST was steadily progressing.

10 Regrets were sent from Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris and Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska that they could not attend the District II meeting.

District II Director Henry Vitek stated that he didn't have a prepared report because this meeting was , held more for the youths' benefit. He reminded everyone that Royalty is to be held Sept.

24th at Lodge No. 18, Elgin. The next day, Sept. 25th, the craft and talent contests will be held at the Temple High School.

District Sales Representative Lad Zatopek congratulated the District II officers. He also stated that the SPJST insurance sales were up.

Vestnik Editor Rudy Sefcik gave a short report. He stated that his schedule was overcrowded but he felt it would soon work itself out.

President Ivicic asked for volunteers for a meeting place for the spring meeting. This proved fruitless, so the decision will be left up to the District II officers.

Lodge 29, Taylor, volunteered for the fall meeting.

Ronnie Riegel' volunteered to be District II reporter.

It was decided that volunteers for the auditing and nominating committees would be picked from the list of members.

Two visitors were introduced.

They were Engelbert Tork from Austria and Rudolph Tork from Czechoslovakia.

Brother Rudy Sefcik gave a greeting to all in their native Czech language.

Members were reminded that a meal would be served and that a band had been hired for their dancing entertainment.

The meeting was adjourned at 3 p.m.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved by a show of hands.

Members who had passed away since the last meeting were: Jeffrey Vicks, Elsie Grimes, Donald Richey, and Paul Bachmann. The members stood for a moment of silent respect for the departed members.

The list of applicants for membership was read and a motion was made by Brother Louis Hanus to accept them as read. Motion was seconded and approved by vote.

New members initiated were Lucy, Charles, Kim and Mike Kellum, Don Kaiser, Vivian Kaiser, and A. B. Kleb, Jr. There were no reports from the president, vice presidents, secretary or treasurer. Financial Secretary Ellen Gill was ill and not present. Youth Leader Ruth Duncan read the names of the winners in District V YAD craft, talent, and royalty plus point contest winners. She thanked her helpers and assistants and complimented the helpers for YAD. She also announced that hopefully the king and queen will speak at the September meeting.

Richard Wahlberg reported for Entertainment Committee Chinn.

Harley Cox, stating that the Hawaiian dance was a success and thanked those who had donated extras, such as potted plants and lawn furniture. Favorable financial reports were given by all committee chairmen. Brother Tim Kostom announced that clean-up day will be Sept. 18th. Refreshments will be provided for the workers. The chairs have been ordered and are on the way. He welcomed Josephine Pflughaupt as a new office worker. There was a question raised about an oral report not matching a written financial report but it was soon cleared up. Sister Mary Frances Wahlberg suggested that all committees make an inventory and turn it in at the next meeting to try and save some confusion.

Brother Zalmanek spoke to us about the tax problem in and around the Heights area. Sister Della Kadlecek reported for the Birthday Club sisters and there was no report from the Dramatic Club, Choral Club President Evelyn

Vornsand reported that there was a concert in Galveston on July 24th that the club sang at and she also reminded us about the Concert Convention Record on sale.

District V Sales Representative Evelyn Mikeska had no official report but stated that Ellen Gill was a grandma for the second time when her daughter Middy Bice gave birth to a huge •boy.

Franklin Bravenec and Jo Ann Burl were reported on the sick list.

Brother Louis Harms, District V director, gave a financial outlook for the district and suggested that we all try to find a way to boost participation and attendance at our District V YAD. In accordance with this, Sister Wanda Kennedy suggested thinking about making it mandatory for a new member to attend the initiation ceremony.

District V Youth Counselor Wahlberg gave us a rundown on the first place winners for YAD and reminded us of State Royalty on Sept. 24th in Elgin and State YAD on Sept. 25th at Temple High School.

Historian Frances Olexa declined to read her report due to the lateness of the hour.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the August celebrants: Edna Wehring, Kathryn Mikeska, Noel Kennedy, Jeffery Elzner, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Veit (it was also their 28th wedding anniversary), Charlotte Smith, E. TEXANS ATTEND POLKA FEST IN LINCOLN, NEBRASKA

Some of our people from Texas attended the Fourth Annual Czech Days Polka Fest held at the PlaMor Ballroom, Lincoln, Nebr., August 12, 13, and 14. There were 22 bands that played some mighty fine music. Needless to say, we all had a great time, and are all looking forward to going back next year.

A picture of the group was made outside under the big orange tent, and the picture picked up an orange cast, so it was not good enough to reproduce.

FEATURES CZECH STUDIES CONTINUE As the summer comes to an end, so do the 4th annual Summer Czech Classes at the SPJST Lodge No. 88 This year's classes consisted of a beginner's class, a conversational Czech class, and an intermediate class. All the classes were taught by University of Houston professor Teofil Halama.

Professor Halama has again managed to present the highlights of the history and the basics of the language in just a mere 8 lessons.

The classes were composed of anywhere between 8 and 16 students. They came from all walks of life — housewives , lawyers, engineers, college students — to learn of their cultural background.

Although Professor Halama was burdened with four other classes in German and Polish during the week, he taught each class zealously, never seeming to tire.

The study of the Czech language does not need to come to an end with the summer. Both first year and second year Czech will be offered at the University of Houston this fall. The first year class, Cze 131, will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The second year class Cze 132, will be held from 10 until

11:30 a.m, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For those who work during the day, there will be a first-year class held in the evenings on both Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. Registration for these classes was held Aug. 17-18.

There is a possibility late registration may be permitted.

The University of Houston Classes go into much detail of the Czech language and culture. Slide presentations and various tapes of the music are used extensively in the classroom. Also a history of the Czechs in Texas is presented during the course.

There is also the University of Houston Czech Club, an organization dedicated to promoting an awareness of the Czechs both on the U of H campus and throughout Houston. They will be happy to welcome any new members The UHCC plans a number of field trips and participates in numerous events each year. Two of their endeavors have been the sale of University of Houston Czech Club buttons and T-shirts The sale of these articles has been very successful and they have been able to keep the Czech Club going strong.

Another item of interest. Seven University of Houston Czech. students were sent to study in Prague, Ctechoslo y akia this summer, their room and board being paid by the Czech government. Be sure to watch for their stories in future issues of the Vestnik.

And for those who are interested, the University of Houston Sundry School will continue their noncredit classes in the Czech language. The beginner's class will start on Tuesday, Oct. 4th and the intermediate classes will begin on Thursday, Oct. 6th. Registration for these classes will be held Sept.

15th - 20th. Anyone requiring more information is invited to call U of H Campus Information at 749--1253 or Teofil Ilalaina at 6493216. (These classes n re open to all.)

HISTORY OF BITCKHOLTS Written for The Smith°its Museum

By John Wass Jan Stanislav Stasa was born December 31, 1890. Birthplace: Residence No. 58, Police Valasske Mezerici County, Moravia. The Empire of Austria, Hungary, Europe.

I was the fifth child of six children born to Josef and Anna Stasa.

Two of my brothers, Frank who was born in 1880, and Alois in 1894, died in early childhood. My oldest sister Marie was born in 1877 and died in November, 1920, in Rosenberg, Texas. The second sister, Anna was born May 20, 1883 and died April 12, 1955 in Littlefield, Texas. Brother Josef was born March 3, 1889 and died April 17, 1953. My father was born March 8, 1850 and was baptized in Catholic Church at Branky. All their children were baptized in Branky.

Mother was born in 1858 in Kunovice and baptized in Loucka Catholic Church. She died June 11, 1940 in Buckholts and both were buried at Bryant Station Cemetery which is located near Little River, Bryant Station Community.

I landed on Texas soil December 12, 1906, in Galveston. The first stop was in Temple where I resided briefly with my parents. In 1907 we moved to Buckholts. After I married I resided with my family at Bryant Station from 1915 until 1934.

I am 86 years old and my memory has faded some when it comes to remembering some given names.

I may have repeated myself for those of you who read my history of Buckholts as I saw it during those years. The population of Buckholts in 1976 was 660. The town was named after John A. Buckholts and was established in 1881. Milan County was established

by Benjamin Rush Mihun, one of our patriots in 1836.

My parents' occupation was agriculture. Father had a state job also as a road overseer on the State Highway between Branky and Loucka. Our homeplace village Police was located between these two towns. The population of Police in 1906 was 509 inhabitants, 507 were Catholics and two were Jews.

At the age of 5 I started to pubic school which was about 300 yards from my home. The school (continued on page 14)

We had one hour off for lunch and two 15-minute recesses. School attendance was compulsory up to 14 years of age. I always respected and loved my teacher and classmates. One day in March, 1904, my parents asked the school authorities for my release so I could attend a trade school. An application was made to the County School inspector who in turn notified me 10 days later to come to the inspector's office in Valasske Mezirici to take an exam as I had not finished the school season. My desire was to train to become a machinist and I moved to Odrau.

My mother had made arrangements with a German family named Master Alois Schartel, Obergase, Odrau, to give me the training I wanted and also the chance to learn the German language, since they spoke German in their home. The contract was for 3 years which included room and board, in exchange for labor from sun-up to sun-down 6 days per week, and a sum of 200 crowns in cash. I moved into my new home on April 11, 1904. The Master and his wife Matilda had three children, ages 7 years through 12. They were very friendly. I attended school Tuesday and Friday from 8 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 8 to 10 a.m. The city of Odrau is located in a valley on the south side of the Odrau River which is 535 miles long.

In October of 1906 I received a letter from my parents advising me that they had decided to sell MR. AND MRS. SENIOR CHIEF IVAN HASKOVEC, his pretty Hawaiian wife, Allene, their daughter, Debra, and sons Kent, left, and Warren, have been visiting here. Senior Chief Haskovec is being transferred from Miami, Fla., to Alameda, Calif., for what he says is probably his final tour of duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. He has been in the service 22 years and says he will stay a while longer. His son, Warren, received an appointment to the U.S.

Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., and is in his second month at the academy. They recently visited with his mother, Mrs. Anna Haskovec, the Alphonse Juriceks and the Henry A. machs, all of Rt. 3, Ennis. (Brother Haskovec has been a member of SPJST since he was 1 year old and he and his three children are all members.

cision and the future looked bright across the ocean. I informed my master of our plans to move. He was willing to give me a journeyman's certificate and diploma providing my parents pay him an extra 100 crowns for my unfinished 5 month contract agreement. The amount was paid and on October 29, 1906, I received my papers. In the Old Country there was a rule that no one could be employed without an identity card. I had no use for this document in my later life in Texas.

My father received a passport on

November 9, 1906 at Cisarske Kralovske Hejtmanstvi County Courthouse, Valasske Mezirici, Moravia.

At this time it was part of the Austrian - Hungarian Monarchy.

One passport only was necessary for the entire family (5 persons).

We boarded the train at the depot of Branky on November 25th and the next day we arrived at Bremen.

An agent from the Kares-Stocky Co. took us to a hotel where we waited until we could board the ship. After 3 days of waiting we were taken aboard the ship, Frankfurt. A 3-dy stopover was made

1 in Baltimore and on December 12th we arrived in Galveston. Approximately 1,000 persons got off in Baltimore. Among the 2,000 people aboard the Frankfurt were Momvians, Slovaks, Czechs, Silesians, Russians, Austrians, Germans, Poles Pruasians and Jews. The voyage was rough, many people were seasick and conditions were crowded.

All were brave though, looking forward to a better life in the new world. My father stayed with a Galveston family, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Krizan, who operated a hotel., When our baggage was loaded on a Santa _Fe train we got aboard and headed for Temple.

The following immigrants got off at Temple: Josef Stem and his wife, Anna, their daughter Anna, two sons, Josef Jr., and Jan; Mrs. Frantiska Dana and two sons, Theodore and Jaroslav and a single man named Jan Dolezal. My married sister Marie and her husband were waiting for our arrival. Another Czech family, Mr. and Mrs. Josef Barton, their daughter &nine and two school boys continued their journey to West, Texas.

The arrival in Temple was pleasant, being able to see my sister and her husband, Frank Poboril. We had a meal at a restaurant operated by a Chinese man. We walked around and looked the city over.

In the afternoon our possessions were loaded on two wagons and taken to our new home. The traveling by wagon was slow as the dirt roads were rough, zigzagging in such a way where four cree Cottonwood, Little Elm, South Elm, and Big Elm, had to be crossed at low levels as there were no bridges.

We arrived at the Poisoril farm before midnight and their four children, ages 7 to 14, welcomed us with a tasteful supper. The children were Joe, Frank, Agnes and Albina Poboril.

How I Learned to Pick Cotton It was late in the year, most of the cotton leaves had frozen where I could really see those nice white cotton balls. The cotton stalks were about 5 feet tall as the soil was fertile in this rich virgin soil. The cotton produced at least 1 bale to the acre. I picked steadily but after two days I decided this was not my vocation. I was lucky to have an offer of a job with Mr. John Sebesta, a blacksmith at Seaton. .1 on page 16)

was much reminiscing, picture taking, and partaking of a wide varietry of foods. Main attraction for picture taking was Mr. Lostak's old 1949 Plymouth which he had driven until the early 1970s, and his son, Tommie, has restored — it looks like it did when it was new.

Brother Lostak will be 94 years old in October and has lived most of his life in the Crosby area after coming to America from Czechoslovakia in 1905 at the age of 22.

He was married to the late Mary Ann Sicrabanek, saki they had four children: Victor of Crosby, Arthur (now deceased), Tommie of Danbury, and Mrs. Ora Faye Wilson of Corpus Christi.

Brother Lostak is presently living with his granddaughter and her husband, Lorenda and David Baldwin in Alvin.

Later on I was offered a job at a machine shop in Temple but my parents decided they were going to become farmers and bought 117 acres one mile west of Buckholts, on the southside of the Santa Fe Railroad and Highway 36. On the east side our new neighbors were Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ermis. Mr. John Repa and his sister Terenie, both single, rented a 50-acre tract from the Ermis estate. Our neighbors on the west were Mr. F. V. Schiller, his wife Frances (Maresh) Schiller, and their children.

Frances married to Mr. Logan of Cameron; Louis married to Suchs, Buckholts; William married to Annie Spurek, Buckholts; Annie married to Vine Kubecka„ Buckholts; Emilie married to Mr. J. Temple High School is situated on North 31st Street, which runs parallel to IH 35. Traveling north or south, take the Temple (or Adams Street) exit and go north at the first traffic light, which is 31st Street. The building is a large modern brick structure, very prominent and easy to find. There is a huge parking lot adjoining.

There are motels in the Temple area offering nice accommodations if you plan to stay overnight either before or after the State YAD. Breaks will be spaced according ',o number of participants in contest.

Important reminder to all: Please read or re-read all rules concerning all competition. Refer to the current rule book (Revised June 1, 1976).

SPJST YOUTH CLUB SCRAPBOOK The Youth Club Scrapbooks will be judged at the 1978 District and State YADs. Activities and events taking place during the youth year (June 1 through May 31) should be included in the scrapbook.

The sheet size cannot be larger than 12 inches by 18 inches.

The scrapbook must be constructed by a youth committee.

Any art work, decorations and extra contents are decided by the committee. Suggestions and ideas should be considered from the youth club membership. The committee should keep the scrapbook up to date and exhibit it during the year, especially on special occasions or at special events.

The scrapbooks will be judged on contents, neatness, appearance, and originality. The first, second and third place district winners will be eligible to go to state to be judged.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 18, ELGIN The August meeting of Lodge 18 Youth Club was called to order

by Paula Peterson with Herman Cling leading us in the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

Secretary Karol Alexander read the reading of the register with 13 members and 3 adults present, and also the reading of the minutes from the last meeting. The minutes stood approved as read.

Correspondence received since last meeting was a letter from the Jerry Lewis Telethon and a letter was also received from the Brenham Lodge asking us to come and participate in their 2nd Annual Tennis Tournament on Sept.

10th.

Unfinished business was that on Saturday, Aug. 20th, we would meet at the lodge for a hayride, with a record hop to follow.

New business concerned the change in the date for the State Royalty from Sept. 17th to Sept.

24th and that Lodge 18, Elgin, Youth Club would send $50 to the Jerry Lewis Telathon and we urge

Dear Members: The Hallettsville Youth Club held their monthly meeting Sunday, August 14th; this was also the date of our Family Day. We discussed the State YAD which will be held Sept. 25th. BUCKHOLTS . . (continued From page 16) Mr. F. V. Schiller was one of the eight applicants for the State Charter of the Farmers Mutual Protective Association and was one of three board directors. He was born in 1849, in Bohemia, Austria, and died in 1941 in Buckholts, buried in Ocker Cemetery. His wife, Frances, was also born in Bohemia in 1855 and died in 1935 at Buckholts and was also buried at Ocker.

On the north side between the Santa Fe Railroad, Hwy. 36, and Lapan Creek our neighbors were the Thomas Babovec family; his wife, Marie, two sons, Thomas and John. Three daughters, Mary, Julie and Frances, single at the time, marrying later. Thomas and Mary moved to Oklahoma. John married, later became blind and died at middle age. He was survived by his wife, one son and one daughter.

John was a very good friend of mine and I missed him. Julie Babovec Krupicka died May 22, 1971, at the age of 77 and was survived

by Per husband 'Vine. Frances married Mr. John Zavadsky in Buckholts. She was later killed in an automobile accident at a railroad crossing when returning from church. She was survived by her husband and two school children.

On the west side of the Babovec farm they had built a small rent house along the road which led to the Fuchs schoolhouse and Grandpa and Grandma Posival made this place their home. Their two daughters married in Wesley, one to Josef Janes and the other to Frank Janes. They moved to Buckholts and became farmers in 1900. Frank rented his farm from Emanuel Fischer. They were members of the Czech-Moravian Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge No. 15, and RVOS No. 4. They were survived by five sons: Henry, Frank, Alvin, Johnny and Benny.

Three daughters: Mrs. Bob Matthews, Mrs. Charles Hundl, and Johnie Sanders. Henry died at age 69 in Temple, and survivors are his wife Viola, formerly Zavadsky, and two sons, Daniel and Ray. He was buried in the Hope Lutheran Cemetery at • Buckholts.

Josef Janes rented his farm from Mr. and Mrs. William Fisher. He, also was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 15 and RVOS No. 4 and the Czech-Moravian Brethren Church.

Edward Posival married Marie Obadal in Buckholts and in 1908 rented a small farm from John Svetik at Bryant Station. Otto Posival married Frances Obadal before World War I in Buckholts but died a few years later being survived by his wife, mother, and brother Frank, who had married Marie Hundl, after the war. Stanley married Miss Stalmach. Vladislay was born on April 3, 1890, and died March 16, 1912. He was buried at Bryant Station Cemetery.

On the west side of the Babovec farm across the road lived a tenant named John Chaloupka, his wife, son John Jr., and daughter, Marie. The children were of school age. The owner of this 40-acre farm was Mr. Nick Harbus and wife who was employed as a laborer by the Santa Fe Railroad for many years.

My parents bought our 117 acres from Dr. W. R. Newton, Mr. F. V. Schiller acting as selling agent.

The price was high at the time, $45 per acre. Our papers were executed by Notary Public Thomas V. Adams, the Buckholts banker at the time. Mr. Adams married the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Buck holts, founder of this town.

At this time the farm had been rented by Mr. Nick Hill who lived in Buckholts with his family. He used hired help to farm, the land while he had employment in a saloon owned by his brother Erwin who also had the wholesale agency for the Pearl Brewery. We moved into our new home early in August. The cotton had not been harvested so my family and myself gathered five bales. At the time we made the purchase, we also bought the farm implements which were on the place, plus a good pair of mules. Mr. Frank Ermis, a very kind and helpful neighbor, helped us arrange a loan

22 with the Rogers Bank.

Our farm had no water, we had to haul it in three wooden barrels from Little River, five miles away.

The trip was made every second day to the Bryant Station low water crossing for loading. We dug a ground cistern to trap rain water off the house and also dug two water tanks for the stock which filled up when rain came. With the fall of the year approaching, my father and brother Josef made preparations for plowing the soil.

Mr. Schiller, our neighbor, had some more cotton to pick, so our neighbor, Jos. Slavik (18 years of age), and I decided to earn a little spending money at the rate of forty cents per 100 lbs, with lunch included. I earned several dollars which I used to buy some corn from Mr. Conrad Jekel who lived near Little River. Corn was necessary for feeding our mules and sold at 37 cents per bushel. My cotton picking friend, Jos. Slavik, remained a lifelong friend and coworker in our fraternal organizations. He died August 30, 1976, at the age of 87, at Maraksville. At the time we moved on this farm we bought a milk cow for $40 from the Schillers, providing us with the milk necessary and a calf every year. Another addition was a mare, she produced three fine horses.

We ran out of cash and needed a loan. My father approached the State Bank in Buckholts but he was unable to borrow any money without a co-signer. Being newcomers at this time in the community, we were not a safe risk. Mr. Arthur Sloan was cashier at the time and Mr. F. Criswell was the assistant cashier. We survived, our expenses being very low. In Cameron, the Mondrick brothers operated a merchandise store where we bought the necessities on credit without any security. Frank and Josef were very good-hearted and trusting and understood the positions of the newcomers who had moved to Milam County. I learned later where some of these bills had not been paid.

My parents had some friends who had moved from the old country by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Josef Paulin, two daughters, Frances 12, and Filomena 3. They were renting a portion of the Gelners' 1,000 acres in the Edhall community. They had some hogs for

sale which gave us a chance one cold December morning to visit them, asking them if they would sell us a hog. Their sons, Charlie and Frank took us to the hog pen and said, .`You can pick what you want, we will help you butcher it and the price is 4 cents per pound, after it is dressed. The hog butchered out at 400 pounds, $16, and no charge for the head and liver.

Besides Charlie and Frank, the family had a daughter named Agnes, who later married Mr. Frank Zalkovsky, Charlie, Miss Frances Pavelka. and Frank, Miss Frances Vybiral.
