FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK This part of today's editorial is written with a feeling that all of our members should read and think about carefully and seriously. In the 1976 convention, in Waco, the delegates acted on and passed a decision that the history of our SPJST be compiled without delay. Then, in a SL meeting after the convention, Honorary SL President Edward L. Marek was requested to work on this project. He agreed to do so with clerical help from our SL and all concerned, and he began his efforts to do so. About 2 months before his death, he called me and stated that he would like to come to the print shop and go over some of the past from what material was available. I encouraged him to do so and asked him to be sure to do so and bring Sister Marek "Maminka" with him; he promised that he would. However, as history and time moves on, time passed and, shortly prior to his entering the hospital for the last time, he called again and stated that he had been working on the history of our SPJST with Bro. Otto Harms and other "old-timers" and requested that we do all we can to continue with the project. Never realizing that this would be our last conversation, I assured him that I would help all I could because my father had bought his Liberty County farm from Bro. I.J. Gallia, our first SL president and knew him and SL Secretary John R. Kubena personally and had told me about the early beginnings of our Society. Alas, that was the last time we
CHOOSING FRIENDS Some choose their Mends as they choose their hats--The flashy kind, and daring. Alas, that kind of hat, or friend. Grows irksome with the wearing! Some friends are most Impressed by what Another owns or spends. Friendships like this are idle When money's gone, It ends! Some folks choose Mends whom they can use; This causes woes and worry. For when they've used friends all they can, They drop 'em in a hurry! Why not choose a friend Who will stand by you to the end One who will reason it out And to falsehoods will not bend? discussed this and the next time 1 saw him was at his funeral. The reason for these lines is this We still have among us, members 80 years and older who know a wealth of history about our early SPJST beginnings. To name a few: Bro. John Stasa, Bro. Adolph Miculka (although blind), Bro. Frank Vytopil, etc. who are still alive and have good memories. This is an effort which will take time, effort, fraternal cooperation and much work. Self glorification on anyone's part must be forgotten or set aside. While time is still available, we
should compile our SPJST's history beginning with our original 23 lodges in 1897 and continue from there as each lodge was added. This week your editor received an 80 plus page history of the community of Buckholts from Bro. John Stasa of Corpus Christi written for their museum in Buckholts. I have not had time to read it, however, I marvel at his memory. Imagine a person 86 years old and writing over 80 pages of typewritten work at that age! It would be well for all of our lodges to try to acquire as much of their particular lodge's history toward this effort and make it available. Somehow, my feeling is that our membership and delegates do not realize what all is involved in the compiling of this in an efficient way, however, WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY. *5*
Sunday, July 3 we were invited to Lodge No. 35, Elk for their July 4th annual celebration. They, had a wonderful patriotic program. A real fellowship was enjoyed as usual when you visit with its membership.
