Morris to serve, so our SPJST is represented on another NFCA committee! * * The SPJST Publication Committee had a rather long meeting here at our office and print shop Saturday, May 21st, however, we will have to tell our readers more about it later.

June 6, 1944: How many of us remember and wish we could forget! Thirty-three years ago General Dwight D. Eisenhower, supreme commander of the Allied Forces, sent the largest flotilla and army ever assembled in the history of mankind across the English Channel. Yes, it was D-Day for the Allies in their move to destroy the tyranny of Nazi Germany. For seven hours the outcome of the invasion hung in the balance. Ships sank, amphibious tanks and vehicles went under, and men died by the thousands.

Above Omaha Beach in the American Cemetery lie more than 9,000 American dead underneath white crosses. Probably 15,000 were sent home to be buried, and for the many missing, there is included a wall called "Garden of the Missing." After seven blood-spilling hours, the Allied Forces had secured the beaches and the course of the war began turning. * * Many of those who were there very likely see the "ghosts of battle" of 33 years ago when they revisit the beaches. To the children who play on these beaches there are no visions of the terrible battle that raged there over a quarter of a century ago. Le Havre, where we landed later in the war was a street lined on each side with stacks of bricks — no buildings were standing. Presently, all of the towns have been rebuilt.

Let's wish for those children that they never ever know of those "ghosts of battle" their elders can envi4on on Normandy beaches.

May we never have to relive that time again, for if we do, it may be too late! Lest we forget!

RESOLUTION OF RESPECT

WHEREAS, the sceptre of death has invaded the home of our Sister Wilma (Zabcik) Marek and has called to life eternal, her husband and Honorary President of the Supreme Lodge SPJST, Brother Edward L. Marek; and WHEREAS, Brother Edward L Marek left surviving him to mourn his departure, his wife Wilma, his daughter Adelyne Marek Holbert, his sons Edward L. Marek, Jr., and F. J. (Bud) Marek, his grandchildren and other relatives, a host of friends and neighbors, all of whom, with all the Supreme Lodge SPJST, desire to record their sorrow at the death on May 10, 1977, of Brother Edward L. Marek, esteemed associate who worked harmoniously and diligently for the good of the Society for many years and was elected as Financial Secretary of the Supreme Lodge in the Xlth Convention in Ennis in 1932 and served until January 1, 1943; elected Active Vice President in the XIVth Convention in Corpus Christi in 1944; elected President in the XVth Convention in Fort Worth in 1948, and served in that capacity until his retirement on January 1, 1969; and, WHEREAS, all members of the Supreme Lodge SPJST bear willing testimony that Society in general throughout the State of Texas and the Fraternal Benefit System has been influenced and enriched by the good works and flawless character of Brother Edward L. Marek and the high standards he set during his earthly journey; and that he was a good man, serious, peaceful, dignified and a good leader.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST hereby gives its formal expression of sympathy and does hereby note in its records the passing from this life of a loyal member, who was esteemed by his associates, loved by his friends and respected by all.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be tendered to the family as a humble expression of heartfelt sympathy in their bereavement; one copy be sent to the Vestnik for publication; and one copy be spread on the minutes of the Supreme Lodge SPJST. NEWSBRIELS Stanley Kacir, 49, passed away Thursday afternoon, May 26th, 1977, at his Milam County farm apparently of a heart attack. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m.

Friday, May 27th at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Nichols officiating. Interment was at the family farm south of Rogers. Brother Kacir was the son of the late SPJST Legal Advisor August Kacir, and Mrs. August Kacir

of Temple. He was a member of Lodge 87, Temple.

The date for the official chartering of Lodge No. 185 ("Hill Country"), New Braunfels, has been set for Sunday, June 26th, in the American Legion Hall in New Braunfels (Post 179). Officers of the Supreme Lodge will bet in charge of the ceremonies, with the cooperation of local lodge officers and members. Details in coming issues of the Vestnik.—NAM * * (Continued on page 17)

I want to thank everyone who attended our District VII banquet, and to those who couldn't be there, I mailed your gift (those who sold $10,000 and up), and had a little favor for each one present. I was happy to have our SL President Brother Nick A. Morris, and son, Michael, and Sister Norma and Brother Ken Andel. Thanks for all you did to make our banquet a success. We had a social hour, then the delicious supper, which everyone seemed to enjoy.

We now have 17 out of 41 sales representatives who have made sales in 1977; let's all get our names on the list and make it 100 percent -- I know it is possible, so let't try.

I was sorry to read about the loss of Brother Edward L. Marek.

My most sincere sympathy goes to his wife and family.

LODGE NO. 180, BURLESON Our regular meeting was held May 19th, at 7 p.m. Vice President Jerry Janek led us in the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

Then we paused for a moment of silence for our departed brother, Honorary SL President Edward L. Marek, who passed away on May 10th, 1977. May he rest in eternal peace. He will be missed by everyone.

Land Committee Chairman Mike Hejl, Brother Clyde Parnell and all committee members have been

working extremely hard on locating tracts of land and they had SL President Nick Morris and Distict III Director Sid Pokladnik go with them before our lodge meeting to look at some of the various tracts. They are doing a very good job and putting in a lot of time and should be commended for all the effort involved.

President Barabas introduced Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris and our District III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik. He then turned the meeting over to them and President Morris showed some paste* and pictures of various lodge buildings and both of them gave us a lot of information that we hope will help in getting our lodge home started. Several of the members had questions to ask and our Home Office officers did an excellent job of answering them.

We had a brief break and had some snacks to eat and then the SL officers left after visiting with everyone for a while. President Barabas thanked them for coming and for all the much needed information they gave us. It was good to see Director Pokladnik and to know that he is feeling much better.

President Bara-bas then called the meeting back to order and a motion was made to dispense with the reading of the minutes and officers' reports until our next meeting, since it was getting late.

New members accepted were Jerry Darrell Raney, Irwin Oscherwitz, Sheilah Ann Oscherwitz, Constance R. Fry, William Glenn Fry, Amy Michele Fry, James Lee Johnson, Tonnee L. Johnson, Arnie M. Johnson, George Albert Peterson, Beverly Jean Peterson, Robert L. Peterson, Angela D. Peterson, James G. Peterson and Summer D. Peterson. We are very glad to have all of them and hope to see them at our meetings, Brother George Peterson was appointed to the Building Committee.

Our next meeting will be held Thursday, June 2nd at 7 p.m., at St. Ann's Church.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned.

LODGE NO. 173, GALVESTON Dear Members and Frielids: Just a few lines from our May meeting.

President Alvin J. Sefcik called our meeting to order. The pledge of allegiance to the flag was recited by the membership. Roll call of officers revealed all to be present.

President Sefcik welcomed all the guests present. The minutes of the April meeting were read and approved as read.

We had a couple of changes of beneficiaries. Financial Secretary Bessie Findley gave her report. Entertainment Chairman Audrey Kaluza gave her report on the Oleander Festival, May 20 - 22; the Strand Festival June 17 - 19; and the Sausage Fest set for July 22 24. Sister Kaluza said the menu consists of sausage Poor Boys with home-made sauerkraut, homemade kolache and other homemade pastries.

We want to remind you that at our next meeting, we will be honoring a member who will be 96 years of age. This lady, Sister Peregrina Dusek, has been a member for 69 years. Helping her celebrate, along with her family, will be her many friends in the lodge. Members are reminded to bring a covered dish and the lodge will prepare the meats. We are saddened that, at the end of July, our Entertainment Chairman Sister Audrey Kaluza will no longer be our chairman.

She is but one woman and cannot carry the weight of the whole lodge on her shoulders. As a whole we should all pitch in and do our share. We are hoping that Frances Kaluza gets well soon. We want to see you up and about. We all miss you and love you.

We welcome Susan Sefcik to our lodge as a new member.

President Sefcik said he is still working on our land deal and should have it completed later in the month.

The premium refund checks were distributed to the members present.

The next meeting is set for June 5, at 1:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in La Marque.

(Photo by Editor) LODGE NO. 184, MOULTON The regular meeting of Lodge 184, Moulton, was held Wednesday, May llth, with 16 members present. The meeting was opened with the saying of the pledge of allegiance to the flag which was led by our lodge president, Brother Ed Mikes.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read.

A moment of silent prayer was held for our departed Brother Julius Kubicek.

A report on the Repair Committee was given by Brother August Kasper.

We are happy to see Brother Jim Novosad and the Kenward Stavinoha family about after being on the sick list and we are wishing Brother Alfons Kalisek a speedy recovery.

The lodge is happy to welcome two new members: Sister Rose Dowling, and Sister Shirley Heimann, Welcome!

A report on the workshop was given by Brother Ed Mikes.

A stew supper will be held at our next meeting, June 8th. Ladies are asked to bring sweets, and refreshments will be furnished by the lodge.

Fraternally, Anita Kubicek Reporter - SPJST — LODGE NO. 87, TEMPLE Dear Members: President Louis Marek called the regular meeting to order Friday evening, May 13th, at 7:30 p.m.

Brother Jerry Valchar led the lodge in reciting the pledge of allegiance. Members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased member Thomas N. Delaney.

Old and new business was discussed and various reports were given.

President Marek announced the program scheduled for May 13th would be postponed until June 10th due to members attending graduation exercises, etc., so please mark this date on your calendar — Friday evening, June 10th, at 7:30 p.m. Brother and Sister Marek will present the film of their recent travels to the Panama Canal, and visitors are' always welcome. The lodge will ;furnish refreshments for members and guests during the social hour.

REPORTING FROM LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The Knights of Dixie furnished the music Saturday night, May 21, for the devoted followers of this well-liked band. There are many who remember at our old home at 1140 Robbie with this band and these folks are devoted attendants at the Knights' dances to this day, and for this we are very grateful. This dance was hosted by four Entertainment Committee members: Ed and Carlene Carlock in charge that evening, and helping were Gene and Georgia Barcak.

Both ladies were dressed in evening gowns and Carlene with her enchanting smile, occupied the box office. Georgia is a very quiet person, but always has a pleasant smile for everyone coming through the door to the Chandelier Ballroom. Ed and Gene were kept busy seating everyone in their right places. The evening was a success and the guests had a ball.

Tables Nos. 11, 12, and 13 were surrounded by many friends and family members of our member (since 1945) Brother Alphons and Sister Ernestine Klam, who were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. Present were their son, David, and his wife, Kathy, another son, Frank, and his wife, Carrie. So far, they have presented their parents with two grandsons, Josef and Jason, and that makes Alphons and Ernestine proud grandparents. Also, daughter Diane is married to the son of Milton and Ann Bohmfall. As the evening progressed a request for the "Anniversary Waltz," to be played for the celebrants, and the happy couple swayed to their favorite waltz.

Sister Mary Johnson, our faithful member with a heart as big as all outdoors, was surrounded by her • family at Table 43 — with son, Victor Ja,nak, and his wife Evelyn, and grandsons Ted and Carol, Tim and Janie. Victor and Caren and granddaughter, Mary Lyn, and her friend, Marsha Brown. Also, Mary's brother, Adolph, and his wife Georgia Sustala.

It really was a nice picture to see them all clustered around Mary Johnson, the family pillar, in a happy mood. That shows that our lodge is a place you may enjoy with your family anytime.

At Table 40, a couple who enjoy

life — none other than Karl and Ora Nell Hassenback --- were enjoying the company of good friends. Around Tables 27, 28, and 29, Brother and Sister Albert Risinger from Lodge 172, Pasadena, and friends were having a jolly time. They all are regular guests at our dances. Thanks!

At Table 24, lodge members Alex and Wilhelmina Mendosa were surrounded by several couples, friends of long standing and followers of the Knights of Dixie band: Noble and Kay Keating, Edna and Edgar Ruppert (telephone plant engineer), Dan and Audrey Jetter (with the Concrete Prudential, Inc.), Janette and Ed Hluchani (retired mayor of Sealy), Allen Coppack (attorney) and wife, Bernice (his office manager), and Florence Bodie (secretary with AAA Supply Co.). All these people are our regular guests and it is appreciated.

In the Blue Room, enjoying the pleasant environment, Brother Marvin and Sister Florence Kocich were having a refreshing drink served by our efficient bartender, Net. This couple is blessed with three children, Shirley is married to Danny Ross and then Allen and Mary Ann. Marvin is the brother to Sister Evelyn Vornsand. She is a busy lady too, serving as Choral Club chairman, vice chairman of the Hlahol Dramatic Club and a member of the social night committee. She is an SPJST sales representative at Lodge 88.

It was a pleasure to greet Sister Dorothy Massey, SYD. Sister Massey was here in Houston to attend the Youth Leaders' Seminar of District V. District V DYC Brother Richard Wahlberg was very pleased with the day's session and expressed his satisfaction.

Brother Mira and Sister Alice Bily are very proud of their daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Bily, who graduated from the University of Houston, with honors, majoring in business administration. Jo Ann is the wife of their son, Robert, and the daughter of Joe and Ann Stransky of Needville. Jo Ann is also the pride of Mrs. John Novak of Needville, being her 1st grandchild. Mira and Alice have five more sons, besides Robert, and they are John, Paul, Jerry, Jimmie (the youngest) and Joseph, who will be graduating from the

8 University of Texas. Congrattilations to such a group of fine young men.

Brother Charles G. Krpec and Ms. Nancy Sklar were united in holy matrimony Saturday, May 16th in the Central Presbyterian Church Chapel with 75 guests present to witness this union. Two sons of Nancy, Jimmie, age 12, and William, age 9, stood in attendance to the newlyweds. Tony Krpec, brother of the groom and Barbara Sklar, sister-in-law of the bride, served as witnesses. After the ceremony the reception was held in the home of the bride's brother, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sklar, vice president of Gerald D. Hines Interests.

Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Sklar, parents of the bride, from Drew, Mississippi, were present and also our lodge sister Hilda (Charles) Krpec, mother of the groom, and the grandmother, Sister Anna Svestka.

The groom, Charles G. Krpec, is employed at NASA; the bride is secretary to Jack Holt, drilling operator. The happy couple honeymooned at South Pt'dre Island and in Mexico. The bride wore a white dress and a picture hat; she was lovely, and the groom was handsome. Best wishes to the newlyweds.

Sister Oleta Hanus underwent surgery Friday, May 20th, in Northwest Hospital and is progressing fairly well. She is confined to Room. 226 for several days before she will be released. Oleta, we wish you a speedy recovery. Oleta is the spouse of our past lodge president, Louis Hanus, who is now District V director and a member of the Lodge 88 Board of Trustees.

A vacation to spend a few days in Dallas and then fly to Corpus Christi to visit his sister, Sue, for one week was taken by Brother Dean Dubbs. He enjoyed the leisure time from his regular daily routine immensely and will devote the rest of his vacation time to the swimming pool and getting a good tan.

Birthday Club Sister Mary Kosut was absent from our activities since January because of her illness, but she is better now and is anxious to resume her activities.

To begin with, she ventured out to see the performance of the English play "The Dutch Detective" presented Friday, May 20th,

but she had to have her leg elevated and cushioned on a chair just as the doctor,adered. She was glad to be able to come to the play, since it has been almost five months. Her husband, John, came with her and is the youngest of the three Kos tut boys. His brother, Frank, used to be very active in our Hlahol Dramatic Club. His parents, the late Brother Frank Kosut, and his mother, Mary, who is still living, were always proud to see their son on the stage in Czech plays at Lodge 88. 'It was nice to see you in circulation again and stay well.

Czech classes will again be conducted at Lodge 88 at 1435 Beall Street, Monday, June 20th, 1977,

by Dr. Teofil Halama. Classes for beginners in reading will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Beginners' conversation from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Intermediate and advanced Czech from 8:30 to 10 p.m. You may register and join your class the same day as Dr. Halama will be in the class room for the times scheduled.

Classes will be conducted each Monday beginning June 20th for 10 weeks for $20 registration fee.

Czech classes for the past three years proved to be successful and we hope interested parties will take advantage of this opportunity.

Our Lodge No. 88 is always willing to support any activity concerning our culture.

Dear Members: The meeting was held May 15th and it was presided over by President Robert Pavelka.

The pledge of allegiance and lodge motto were led by Karen Shelton and Donna Stanislav, members of the youth club.

There was a visitor at the meeting; he was Mr. George Shilling.

Our lodge welcomes you back, any time.

There was a moment of silent tribute held for several of our lodge members: Herbert Vahrenkamp, Honorary SL President Edw. L. Marek, and Thomas Janek.

The minutes of the April meeting were read and approved.

Brother Silas Smith thanked Brothers Frank Parma, Daniel Nors, Robert Pavelka and Emil

Hanus for all the hard work they have been doing around the lodge home.

Brother Smith informed everyone that there would be a Cleanup Day Arne ,11th for getting ready for YAD. We would like all of you who can to please come out and help.

The month of May is when Mother's Day occurs, so all mothers present were honored at the meeting. Some of them received special honors: Bernice Pankonien, Mother of the Year, Mrs. John Simcik, oldest mother in the lodge, and Brenda Powell, youngest mother.

The youth club gave some gifts to the mothers whose names were drawn: Joyce Chudej, Annie Hanus, Marie Drews, Marie Janecka, line Marinson, Agnes Mazanec and Georgia Kofnovec. Even the mothers who didn't win are still very special in our lives!

In June all the fathers will be honored in some special way for they are really great, too!

The menu for YAD was given: chicken, peas and carrots, new potatoes, salads coffee or tea, and a dessert. The tickets will be $2 for adults and $1.25. for children. This will be on June 26th, so everyone try to attend the annual event.

Our youth club had several seniors graduating this year from high schools: Theresa Vernetti, from Richfield; Cynthia Slovak, Chuck Horten and Patti Stanislav, all from West High School. Congratulations to all of you and the very best of luck in the future.

A very nice thank-you card was received from the Herbert Vahrenkamp family for the' help they received during their time of sorrow.

There were get-well cards sent to Sisters Cary Pruitt, Irene Schmentz, and Brother Emmitt Wayne Attaway. I wish you all a speedy recovery.

There were sympathy cards sent to the. Charlie Soukup family, Herbert Vahrenkamp, Eugene Sulak family, Ronald Janek family, and Edward L. Marek family We will be thinking about all of you.

Congratulations went to Mr. and Mrs. Gene Miller, and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Traywick for having new grandchildren.

Our senior citizens of the lodge were recognized since this is Senior Citizen's Month. Sister Jeanette Smith read the Senior Citizen Prayer.

Tina Urbanek from the youth club brought a birthday cake. May birthday celebrants include: Emil Hanus, Braddy Nors, Leslie Dungan, Sophie Lesikar, Tina Urbanek, Paul Cepak, Elms., Silvers, and Paul Neslony. We wish you all many more.

The youth club put on a program after the meeting honoring all the mothers present. Those helping with the program were: Janice a,nd Steven Stanislav, Tina Urbanek, Cynthia Kofnovec, and Patricia Holder. They really did a fine job.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: Time is going by fast and everyone seems busy working and planning things for our lodge.

There were two members added to the Band Committee at Lodge 74. They are Brothers James Wilcox and Brother James McCullough. The committee had an interview recently with a band that did a fine job in their performance. Be sure and come to enjoy the fine bands that are selected by your band committee. Also let us know whether or not you are pleased with the selections.

A big Fourth of July Celebration is planned at Lodge No. 74 Sunday, July 3rd, instead of the 4th. There will be plenty of food to eat and lots of dancing with two bands playing for your entertainment; one in the afternoon, and the other for the evening. Kindly put this date on your calendar. An invitation is extended to everyone throughout the state as well as to guests from out of state. There will be more details about this event in my later report.

We had our local band, The Crockett Westerneers, performing for us May 21st and everyone seemed to have had an enjoyable time, despite other activities which were taking place in the vicinity of Crockett; the attendance was favorable.

The officers and members are pleased to have all the good cooperation and fine work the assigned members are contributing to their duties. Among them are: George Charanza who saw to the perpetural care of the flowers on thet lodge property, and Brother James McCullough who came and shredded the grass on the lodge parking premises. He used his own shredder and tractor because the lodge mower is being repaired.

Thanks very much for caring for the lodge, also thanks to the other members who equally did a wonderful job for our beautiful ledge building.

We were sorry to learn that Tandy Simmons had to have special care while being admitted to Houston COunty Hospital. I was also informed that she will be needing a kit of blood. Sister Simmons is a member of SPJST. Many SPJST members who are extending fraternalism and making

her feel she is a part of us, are donating blood for her health. All of us wish her a fast recovery.

LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear Readers, Our May meeting was called to order by President Marek. The pledge of allegiance was said and the' minutes were read and approved.

Visitors recognized at the meeting were DYC Frank Klinkovsky and Miro Spahnel.

Several thank-you cards were read for flowers that were sent. A donation was made to the Rogers FHA organization for $50. This donation will be used to send Arleen Cabla to Seattle, Washington. She was elected secretary of Area 7 and will be a delegate to the National Convention in July.

A motion was made to have a barbecue for the members. I will give you the date and time later.

I will start reminding you about the District II fall meeting in Taylor, August 14th and YAD in Holland, July 10th. Please keep these dates in mind and make an effort to attend these functions.

The youth club will have a social this Friday, May 27th at 6 p.m. They will have a wiener roast, and go fishing at the home of Jerry Cabla, Jr. New member is Mark Olsen.

Additional insurance was taken by Ronnie Dorner.

The members of Lodge 24 Cyclone want to deeply express their sympathy to the family of Mr. Edward L. Marek. Mr. Marek was

a member of our lodge and he will be missed by all. He always had some good advice to give us and a warm smile.

LODGE NO. 79, CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our monthly meeting was held May 8th, Mother's Day. A joint SPJST and Sokol social was held after the Sokol meeting. A very fine program was presented by the SPJST youth, under the direction of Youth Leader Jerry Elzner.

Four mothers were presented potted plants: Sister Carrie yeselka, Sister Daisy Hermis, Sister Julie Kucera and Sister Lorene Lehnert.

Sister Millie Elzner expressed her concern over the small percentage of youth in our lodge. She pointed out that this makes it especially difficult to have a successful youth club.

Remember, every fourth Saturday of the month is the time to come dance to the music of John Orsak and the Blue f)iamonds at Sokol Hall, from 9 until 1.

I would like to extend best wishes to all fathers and grandfathers on Father's Day, June 19th.

CHORAL CLUB OF LODGE NO 47, SEATON The Seaton Choral Club met last night for its regular rehearsal with the following members present: Jimmy and Caralou Allen, Alfred and Martha Kiusacek, Annie Jakubec, Otto and Matilda Ha.nus, Emil J. Hejl, Bill and Lillian Kosarek, Emily Stuteville, Georgia Sodek, Linda Wilde, Ruby Bolton, Leon Sodek, Elsie Cabla, Janet and Althea Young, Wallace Jez, (Elsie, we missed you), Willie and Doris Provazek, Frank and Eleonora Spanhel, Woodrow and Delores Skra.banek. The turnout was disappointing because it should have been much better. We realize that sometimes it cannot be avoided that we can't attend; but to build an outstanding Choral Club we should try to always be present for regular or special rehearsal% We had a grand time singing those old song_s and we specially practiced the songs that we will sing at the Cameron Folk Festival Saturday, June 11th. After rehearsal we had a short business meeting at which we discussed the Cameron Folk Festival and our participation in it. It was decided that we sing on Tuesday, June 7th to polish up on the songs we are going to sing at the festival; our accordionist, Ralph Milek, will be able to be with us, so let's try to have as near 100% attendance as is possible. Your being present for this rehearsal will be very much appreciated and we hope everyone will be present!

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE OFFICERS AND MEMBERS OF LODGES 147, 161, AND 168, JOURDANTON

Dear Members: As all of you know, your three lodges are all located in the immediate vicinity of Jourdanton, a community of approximately 2,000 inhabitants in Atascosa County.

According to records, Lodge 147 was organized on the' 11th of March 1928; Lodge 161 on the 9th of January, 1938; and Lodge 168 on 29 April 1961. Further, according to records, the increase in members in two of the lodges has remained pretty much the same since they were organized, one experiencing a slow decline in membership. The other has registered modest gains since it was organized.

Lodge No. 147 shows approximately 95 certificates in force with no JTs. Lodge 161 shows 226 certificates in force, with 13 JTs. Lodge 168 shows 156 certificates in force, with 13 JTs. The total membership for all three lodges stands at approximately 535 certificates, 26 of those being Juvenile Term certificates. (These are recent figures, but not up-to-the-minute.)

In thinking over the matter and weighing all of the factors involved, the undersigned feel that it would be to the advantage of the three lodges and the SPJST for the three lodges to merge, pool their resources, both human and financial, and from one strong lodge in the Jourdanton area. A merger would also benefit the young people in all three lodges. One of the lodges had an active youth club at one time. If the merger is successful, the membership of the new lodge could then think and plan on a new lodge building in the Jourdanton area, which is sorely needed, both for local lodge activities, and in District VII. (At present there is only one large building, Lodge No. 107 Floresville, in all of District VII, and there is an acute shortage of lodge facilities to host district and other functions.)

Please give this proposition serious thought. Please forget about what may have happened among members in these lodges in years past, but think about the future of the SPJST in your area, especially for your children and generations

to succeed them. We emphasize that nothing will be done without the approval of the majority of the members in the above three lodges.

If you think this will be a good move, please attend the meeting, which will be called to discuss the possible merger of the three lodges.

(The Supreme Lodge President would preside at this meeting.) If the overall reaction is favorable at this meeting, we' will then proceed according to the articles in the bylaws, specifically Article which states: "Two or more lodges wishing to merge or consolidate may do so if notice is given to the membership of both lodges in the Vestnik at least twice before the meeting at which consolidation is to be considered. Each member over 16 years of age will be mailed a written notice that a merger will be voted upon at such a meeting. The merger can become effective only if a majority of the members present of each merging lodge vote in favor of the merger."

Then a joint meeting would be' held of the membership of the three lodges to elect officers, select a lodge number and designation. (The Supreme Lodge President would preside at this joint meeting until a slate of officers is elected.)

If it turns out that after the first meeting and healing all of the details involving a merger, one of the three lodges elects not to merge with the other two, and the other two do decide to merge, a merger of the' two lodges can proceed.

Again, please weigh this question carefully and if you would like to hear the matter discussed, pro and con, please attend the informational meeting on June 12, 1977, in the Civic Center in Jourdanton, Texas, at 2 p.m. It is hoped that as many members from all three lodges as possible can attend.

We are anxious to aid the Jourdanton area and District VII so that more of the fraternal benefits of belonging to the SPJST are available' to all the members. There is also every reason to believe that with a combined membership of about 535 members or so, that 1 1- ' , rmger you will have a, lodge, capable of a building program in the not too distant future. After an, in unity

12 books were in order.

After a 15-minute intermission, the business meeting resumed with the officers giving a short report on their offices. President Alice Banning extended a welcome for the entire district to Lodge 18, Elgin, which is now in District U. District Youth Counselor Frank Klinkovsky reported that due to the large amount of youth attending camp, that it would be broken up into two parts. He also reported that YAD would be on July 10th, 1977, at Lodge 80, Holland.

Howard Lesihkar, Rest Homes director, gave a short report on reserving rooms for family members and the state classification of the two rest homes.

District II Director Henry Vitek gave a short report.

CZECH MUSIC IN THE STATE CAPITOL

Saturday, May 7th, was the day State Senator Mrs. Betty Andujar served her state as Governor for a Day, and her festive entrance and the processional of the celebration was made to the music of the famous Czech symphonic march of Josef Suk (son-in-law of the great composer Antonin Dvorak) "Navy Zivot," Towards new Horizons (literally "Into a New Life"), performed by the 100piece brass band of the University of Texas.

The composition was written in 1919, dedicated to the Sokol Society and performed for the first time at the VII Sokolsky Siet when Czechoslovakia became a republic.

The march was also performed and won first prize at the World Olympics in Edinborough, England, and also in Los Angeles, California.

Both madam senator and her husband Dr. John J. Andujar, as he told me, fell in love with this grand and festive music of Josef Suk and tried to find the full musical score all over the United States, but without success. Sister Birdie Hilsher gave them my address and I was able to send Dr. Andujar the symphonic score.

He gave much information about the composer, his music, the Sokol heritage and the Czechoslovak culture of our Texas pioneer forefathers as it was contained in the two articles about this corn,position written by my friend, Brother Emil Kuropata, and published in the Vestnik on January 24, and February 24th. The speaker compared, among others, the composition "V Navy Zivot" to the Czech nation's dedication to freedom, the same as our own American freedom, which was exemplified on that day's festive occasion.

Mrs. Betty Andujar is well known for her leadership among the circa one million Texas descendants of the proud Czech nation's pioneers who settled here from Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, and Slovakia and the governorfer-a day stressed the importance of their contributions, together with the English, German, and other nationalities of early Texans who helped to build the foundations of this great state of Texas.

Both Sister Hilsher and myself appreciated the personal invitation the Andujars extended to us to be guests at this ceremony, reception, and the governor's luncheon.

Let's hope that the outstanding 100-piece Brass Band of the University of Texas (which, in the meantime, received an additional score of the composition from the Czechoslovak State Department), will perform this exhilarating marshal music "V Novy Zivot" by Josef Suk at many other occasions.

Tuesday night, May 17th we played Mark III, the team we beat in 15 innings the last time we played them; only this time, we were fortunate because we won in 7 innings by a score of 7 to 1. This currently leaves us in second place in the City Major League with 3 wins and 2 losses and in first place in our Monday night league with 3 wins and 1 loss with a 2-game lead. Ralph Stauss hurled a fine game allowing 6 hits, 3 walks, and 12 strikeouts; he received flawless support afield with no errors being committed.

Leading hitters were Roy Andrews with 2 singles and a walk, Jerry Zabojnik with 2 singles, Ralph Stauss with 2 singles, Connie Brennan with a double, Don Jarmo, with a single and a walk, Robert Weyman with a double, Galen Lindsey with a single, Alan Lucien with a single, and Don Lennox with a single and a walk.

We had a total of 13 base hits; that is what it takes to win ball games.

The weekend of May 27th, 28th, and 29th, we were scheduled to play in the Richardson Tournament at Huffhines Park in Richardson.

We had another nice turnout at both of our games and we were especially glad to see Annie Steiner, Helen. Lucien, Adolph and Evelyn Salac at our last games.

After the game most of the players' wives and some of our fans went to Tony's and enjoyed some good refreshments and did a lot of visiting.

Monday night, May 23 we played 'MI and we won by a score of 9 to 2. Roy Andrews was the winning pitcher and hurled a fine game. He allowed 3 hits, 4 walks,

and struck out 3 batters.

We had a fine turnout of fans at the game and after the game, we enjoyed pivo and soft drinks, courtesy Ralph Stauss, one of our pitchers. The team enjoyed the refreshments and wishes to thank Ralph for his generosity.

Tuesday night, May 24, we played Auto Crossroads for the third time in our Tuesday night league and we lost again to them by a score of 4-0. This is the only team that has beaten us so far in the City Major League. Lionel Schulz hurled a very fine game allowing 3 hits, 3 walks and had 4 strikeouts, and with a little help from the umpire, we might have won the game; I am only saying several close calls went against us, which, if called correctly, could have altered the outcome of the game.

Hitters were Robert Weyman, with a triple, Lionel Schulz with a triple, Joe Nobles with a double, and Roy Andrews with a single.

We didn't get many runners on base and when we did, we couldn't score them. Despite the fact we lost the game, it was well-played with no errors being committed by either team and it was • exciting all the way .

We had another fine turnout at the game and we were glad to see all the rooters — Charlie, Wanda, and Cherri Peter were present and also Bessie and Emil Petr were at one of our recent games. Thanks for coming and we hope to see you at future games.

Fraternally, Ima Ray Watson Reporter - SPJST — ALVIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE CZECH CLUB HOLDS SOCIAL The Alvin Community Czech Club held its end-of-course social April 26th, with students, family, and guests present for a covered dish supper in the' ACC Student Union Building.

Mr. Albert Blaha of Houston, president of the Czech Ex-Students' Association of Texas (CESAT) was among the guests.

William E. Souchek, instructor, reported on his participation in the annual meeting of CESAT in Taylor, recently, attended by several hundred people.

They discw,sod teaching strategies, materials, recruiting methods, and similar matters related to their objectives of improving teaching of Czech and appreciation of Czech culture and history.

Mr. Souchek also announced that loans were available to students of Czech lineage at a very low rate of interest.

Application or additional information can be obtained from him or from ACC Continuing Education Office.

Certificates were awarded to each member completing the course.

Among those receiving certificates were' Mrs. Eleanor Stuksa of Angelton; her son, Rick, and her grandson, James, of Alvin; three generations!

The Czech Class and their guests were' entertained by talented musicians Willie Prihoda of Danbury and Frank Dirba of Damon.

With high expectations, the class is looking forward to their seventh semester of instruction with interest and hope that more students will be eager to learn and help perpetuate the language of their forefathers.

Fraternally, Paul Pasemann Secretary SPJST — SPRING BRANCH CZECH CLASS HOLDS LAST MEETING Fifteen members of the Spring Branch class in conversational Czech received certificates of completion at their last class held May 19th, 1977.

Classes were held on Thursday evenings at Spring Branch Memorial High School in northwest Houston. The course was taught by Mr. William Souchek, also of Houston.

Czech customs as well as the language were discussed in detail.

One of the classes was highlighted by a slide presentation on the Souchek's recent visit to Czechoslovakia.

Classes will again be held in the fall with registration to be held August 22-26, 1977, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Memorial High School.

Classes will begin September 1st.

All those interested in learning more about their Czech heritage,

or even in just learning the language, are invited to attend.

ELEVENTH ANNUAL TANNISH-BROVEC REUNION HELD MAY 22, 1977 The eleventh annual TannichBrovec reunion was held at the New Taiton Hall in New Talton, Sunday, May 22nd, with about 100 people in attendance. Everyone enjoyed conversation and fellowship before dining on the variety of delicious food brought by each family. After lunch, a free will donation was collected from the reunion members.

The annual meeting was called to order by President Charles Ulbrich. Secretary-Treasurer Clifford York gave the financial report of the 1976 reunion. Members voted to continue having the reunion every year with the 1978 reunion to again be held at New Taiton on May 21, 1978. Next on the agenda was the selection of the oldest and the youngest member in attendance and also the member who made the longest trip to attend the reunion. Mrs. Bertha Ulbrich, at 89 years, was the oldest; the youngest in attendance was Jason Gibson, age 5 months; and the member who traveled the farthest distance was Mrs. Constantina (Teana) Armatta from Albany, Oregon. An election of new officers was then held for the 1978 reunion. Joe Anhaiser, the 1977 vice president automatically moved up to become president of the 1978 reunion. Other officers are vice president — John Horak, Secretary-Treasurer — Joe Sekerka, Reporter — Mrs. Gaynelle Pusok, and Entertainment Chairperson — Mrs. Ann Horak.

The meeting was adjourned and the entertainment chairperson for the 1977 reunion, Mrs. Mary Lou Meith, provided games for all who cared to play.. After the games, a beautiful anniversary cake was served with punch in observance of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Kubesch's 48th wedding anniversary which was May 21, 1977.

15 CZECH CLASSES BEING TAUGHT AT THE UNIV. OF HOUSTON Mr. Teofil Halama, is currently teaching three regular classes of the Czech language and one Sundry School class of Czech. Altogether there are about 45 students currently enrolled in these Czech courses at the University of Houston, and about 260 students have taken courses in Czech since they were first offered four years ago.

In addition, the University sponsors an active Czech Club in which the members meet to participate in cooking Czech foods and exchanging information about ,the Czech language and culture. The members of this organization are the ones who do much to spread the word about the Czech classes at such gatherings as the Fort Bend County Second Annual Czech Fest in Rosenberg, where they sponsored a booth with information about the classes and sold T shirts and buttons proudly proclaiming the Czech heritage.

In the language courses themselves Mr. Halama emphasizes grammar and vocabulary but does not neglect the history of the country of Czechoslovakia itself or its regions, Moravia, Bohemia, and Slovakia. Maps, articles, and reports, and taped musical selections enrich the course material to strengthen the pride of the descendents of the Czech people. Current history, such as T. G. Masaryk and chapters in politics, as well as accounts of Jan Hus, Cyril and Methodius, and the Hapsburg dynasty enhance the class lectures.

Although there is great enthusiasm among the students currently taking Czech, many people are concerned about the future of the program. There seems to be a declining interest among the people to whom the language should matter the most — the Czechs in Texas themselves. Quite a few schools throughout the state which used to offer the course have discontinued it because of insufficient enrollment. One source of real encouragement has been the SPJST itself. SPJST Lodge 88 and the Supreme Lodge in Temple have been of great financial assistance and moral support to the Czech students this year. Six scholarships have been awarded to students found to be excellent and in need of monetary assistance. Fortu-

16 nately, the 1976 General Convention of SPJST has assured that this help is going to continue.

Czech language classes will be offered at the University of Houston again in the fall. The first semester course, Cze 131, will be held for day students from 8:30 to 10 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, and for night students from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The second semester course is Cze 231 and is to be offered on the same days from 10 until 11:30 in the morning. The third year course, Cze 331, Communication Skills in Czech with literature and poetry included, is currently being petitioned for, and hopefully can be offered in the spring of 1978. The goal is for students to one day be able to major in Czech at the University. Flyers around the campus, interviews, and announcements in the school newspaper, announcements in the Vestnik and on Radio Station KFRD, Rosenberg, booths and displays at various social gatherings such as the Czech Fests, and word of mouth are helping to popularize the Czech classes among the whole population, and will hopefully increase the enrollment at the University by a great deal.

In addition to these regular credit courses, Prof. Halama teaches summer classes at Lodge 88 in Houston, which are just for fun.

This summer the classes start on June 20th and will meet on Mondays for six weeks. There will be these divisions: from 5:30 until 7 p.m. and from 7 until 8:30 p.m. students who are beginners and slightly advanced will meet; intermediate students will meet from 8:30 until 10 p.m. for conversational course. The summer classes are practical courses with no need of books and the only cost is $20.

Lodge 88 has a fantastic setup, for such a vacation course and it is an enjoyable way to have a vacation and learn something at the same time. If anyone has any questions please contact Mr. Teo. Saint Pius Catholic Church was the setting for the exchange of matrimonial vows by Margaret Mary Haluzan and William Curtis Barnes. The ceremony occurred May 28th, 1977, at 1 p.m.

The bride and groom were given in marriage to each other by their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Haluzan, Jr., and the late Mr. William L. Barnes and Mrs. Fanny Barnes Cooper.

The bride's attendants were her sister, Mrs. Frances Petr, the matron of honor, and Ms. Susan Reznik, the maid of honor.

Serving as bestman was Richard Richard Coker, and Mr. Randy

Strauss was the groomsman.

Heather and Chris Collis, the groom's niece and nephew, were the flowergirl and ringbearer respectively.

Ushers for the ceremony were the bride's brother, Mr. Albert Haluzan III, and brother-in- law, Mr. Ronald Petr.

Following the wedding ceremony, a beautiful reception was held in the Saint Pius Parish Hall.

The groom is a graduate of Irving High School. Currently, he is attending North Texas State University as an English major.

The official ground - breaking ceremonies for the new home of Lodge 188, Centerville (Deerest Lodge) is scheduled in conjunction with the regular monthly meeting of the lodge on Monday, June 6th, at the lodge building site 1 mile north of Centerville on Highway 75. Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris and lodge officers will be participating in the groundbreaking ceremonies which will be held at 6 p.m., followed by a fish fry and picnic and the regular monthly meeting. Everyone is asked to bring pastry of their choice and bring your lawn chairs, also.

After a meeting of representatives of Lodge No. 189, BryanCollege Station, with the officers of the Supreme Lodge, recently, it was decided to set the date of the official chartering of Lodge No. 189 for Sunday, July 17th. Ceremonies will be held in the Lakeview Club on FM 974, 3 miles NNE of Bryan, also known as the Tabor Road. Details in coming issues of the Vestnik.

Lodge 47, Seaton Annual Picnic

This year's picnic has been set for Sunday, July 24th. Plans are underway for a bigger-than-ever celebration. Plans include a Sokol gymnastic exhibition, performance by a brass band, visiting Beseda dancers, a complete and wellstocked Czech Country Store, outdoor refreshment stand, outdoor sausage sandwich grill concession, dunking booth, game stand, attractive prizes, plenty of food, and free dance from 6 to 10 p.m with music by the Vrazel Polka Band.

Refreshment stand opens at 12 noon; other concession stands at 1:30. Food plates served starting at 2 p.m. and continuing into the afternoon and evening.

A lot of good discussion was had concerning bettering our youth program.

DISTRICT VI CAMP at Mutt%) Circle D Resort June 20-23, 1977 Let's all go with a big BANG. Where? To Bastrop Circle D Resort, of course. You take Hwy. 21 from Bastrop to Caldwell, about 6 miles from Bastrop. I hope your stay at this new camp will be a pleasant one.

Please remember one chaperone for every ten children. Check your rule book before you go. Did you attend the majority of your youth club meetings?

Things each camper should bring: tooth paste, tooth brush, towel for swimming, flashlight, jeans, shorts or slacks, sturdy shoes, bathing suit, first-aid equipment, and money. You will need to buy your own soft drinks or snacks.

Bring cookies for yourself for the three-day stay; that will be your refreshments and you may bring fruit, also. The horseback riders will, not be insured. Please think about this before you ride.

We will arrive at camp Monday, June 20th, at 2 p.m. Schedule will be posted on the camp ground.

You may leave camp Thursday at 2 p.m.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Readers, On May 22nd the Teen Club of Lodge 84, Dallas, held their monthly meeting. The meeting was brought to order by our President Randy Petr. Annette Prachyl led us in the pledge of allegiance. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were read and approved.

Then we discussed old business which was our April activity: the Softball Benefit Dance on April 30th, and the Polka Festival on May 8th when we danced the Beseda at Lodge 135, in Ennis.

We then discussed new business.

We were informed that the Princess Ball was set for April 16th, 1977. We were also reminded of District Youth Achievement Day on June 26th at Lodge 66, Waco, and District Royalty at Lodge 25, Ennis, on July 31st. We discussed where we plan to go this year for our dude ranch excursion.

This is the official opening of the pool; June 18th is a tentative date for going to the beach and we should know more details later. Camp is June 24-27. This year camp will be at Circle D Resort near Bastrop. If you plan to go to camp please have your application in by June 1st.

Our point sheets were passed out and we filled them in for the month of April, then we moved along to the election of the new Teen officers. The youth club agreed to buy some skates in order to have skating every Saturday from 10 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon.

We also have social games every Thursday from, 8 to 10 p.m.

A warm thank-you was expressed to the outgoing officers and committees for keeping the youth club in the informative, educational and entertainment circle.

The next big event will be selling snoweones, so I want you to come out and join us.

Mrs. Wahlberg had handed out our point sheets and everyone filled them out and then we t,Iiiined them in. She also had handed out invitations for PAD. We had seta date to go to the beach June 18th.

Then it was time to elect new officers. Vice President Mark Wahlberg had taken the nominees for president. This office was won by Jerrie Poston, so Jerrie is the president. Nominees for vice president were Mark Wahlberg and Delsie Cot and the vice president is Deisle Cot. Nominees for secretary were Karen Kaase and Linda Wehring; the secretary is Linda Wehring. Nominees for treasurer were Mark Wahlberg and Debbie Wehring and the treasurer is Mark Wahlberg. Sergeant-at arms is Eddie Griffin. All the motions nominating people for offices were seconded by Susan McSpadden.

ANNIE FRANCES KORTEFF,

who passed away in the Lake View Nursing Home Monday, May 2nd, 1977, at the age of 77 years.

Sister Annie was born July 1st, 1900 in Czechoslovakia. The Kret family arrived in Texas in 1906, making their home near Flatonia.

In her teens, she made her home in Fort Worth where she met her future husband, George Korteff, in 1920. They celebrated their 50th anniversary on June 21, 1971.

Sister Annie was very active in many clubs and was a faithful worker at Lodge 154 for 43 years.

She was president of the Friendship Club for 9 years and also served as the club Czech reporter and treasurer for several years.

She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church since its beginning, taking part in many fundraising endeavors and other church connected activities.

Rosary was recited Wednesday night at Shannon's North Chapel, with Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday at St. Thomas Catholic Church at 10 a.m., with Rev. William Hoover, celebrant, officiating.

Survivors include her husband, George Korteff; three daughters, Mrs. Flora Jane (Jack) Ryder, Morro Bay, Calif., Mrs. Doris (Jim) Burnette, Fort Worth, Mrs. laollie

who passed away in the Floresville Nursing Home Saturday, April 30th, 1977 at the age of 85 years, 11 months, and 29 days.

A daughter of Joseph and Frances Korinkovy Sisak, Mrs. Novak was born May 1st, 1892 in Czechoslovakia. After marrying Tomas Novak on July 25, 1919, the couple came to the USA in 1920, settling in Wilson County, and moving to the Black Hill Community in 1929.

Sister Novak was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 107, Floresville.

Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Anton (Geraldine) Peter olf El Campo, Mrs. Edgar (Frances) Kappelman, Jr., of San Antonio; sons, Louis Novak of Black and Thomas Novak, Jr., of Floresvine; 12 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

Rosary was recited on May 1st at the Vineyard Funeral Chapel.

Requiem Mass was said Monday, May 2nd, at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Rev. Wallis Stiles, as celebrant. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Pallbearers were her grandsons: Norman, Anton, Frankie and Bobby Peter, all of El Campo, Charles and Benjamin Novak of Floresville.
