EDWARD L. RARER Honorary President Brother Marek was elected as Financial Secretary of the Supreme Lodge in the XIth Convention in Ennis in 1932 and served until 1 January 1943; elected Active Vice President in the XIVth Convention in Corpus Christi in 1944; elected President in the XVth Convention in Fort Worth in 1948, and served in that capacity until his retirement on 1 January 1969.

In behalf of the entire membership, we extend our sincere and heartfelt sympathies to Brother Marek's family. The SPJST and Fraternalism have lost a loyal servant. This good man touched many lives during his lifetime. He will be missed and remembered by his friends, who are legion.

Honorary President Brother Edward L. Marek passed away in a Temple hospital Tuesday evening, May 10th, 1977. Funeral, services were held from the Ocker Brethren Church in East Bell County on Friday, May 13th, at 2 p.m.

The body had lain in state at the Harper-Talasek Funeral Home prior to the services.

Rev. Albert Michalik, pastor of the Temple', Brethren Church and the Ocker Bretht. ren Church, officiated, with SI, President Nick A. Morris and District III Director Sid Pokladnik speaking on behalf of the SPJST. Burial was in the nearby Ocker Cemetery.

Members of the Supreme Lodge served as pallbearers, with former SL Secretary R. A. Urbanovsky and former SL Financial Secretary Ben Zabcik serving as honorary pallbearers. Brother Marek had been a longtime member of SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone, in East Bell County.

FROM THE EDITOR Another devout fraternalist has left the ranks of the living; he is none other than our SPJST Honorary President Edward L. Marek.

We met briefly in the middle 1930s when he was serving our SPJST as SL financial secretary and, then of course, World War H came along and interrupted our contacting each other in lodge work.

After returning from the service, we renewed our acquaintance, especially at the 1948 SPJST Convention in Fort Worth where this writer was a delegate and when Brother Marek was elected president of our SL. As a delegate to the next four conventicrig, we saw him re-elected as president at all of them. He had served our SPJST for almost 36 years total; 20 of them as. president. There was a brief period in 1943 when he did not serve for some time.

In the 1944 convention in Corpus Christi he was elected as active or executive vice president. In 1968, at the age of 73, he decided

Wednesday, May 18, 1977 to retire and did so, however, he was active in SPJST and fraternal work to the last.

About this true fraternalist and lover of his fellow man and life, these two words will sum up all that we could express: WELL DONE! In Czech there is an endearing word for "dear little mother"; it is "maminka." Brother Marek never referred to Sister Wilma as his wife, but always as maminka. So to Maminka; the two sons and daughter, and their families our SPJST sends sincere sympathy and your editor ends with: May honor to his memory remain with us forever.

NEWSBRIEFS After a meeting of representatives of Lodge No. 189, BryanCollege Station, with the officers of the Supreme Lodge, recently, it was decided to set the date of the official chartering of Lodge No. 189 for Sunday, July 17th. Ceremonies will be held in the Lakeview Club on FM 974, 3 miles NNE of Bryan, also known as the Tabor Road. Details in coming issues of the Vestnik.

—NAM * * Tannich-Brovec Family Reunion The 11th annual Tannich-Brovec family reunion is going to be held Sunday, May 22nd, beginning at 10 a.m. at the new Talton Hail between El Campo and Garwood.

Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch for themselves and any guests they bring. A donation of home-made or bought gifts for prizes to be used by the entertainment chairman. All descendants of the Tannich and Brovec families are invited. * * Vacek-Balcar Reunion Descendants of Josef and Magadelena (Schreiber) Vacek, Sr., and Frank and Agnes (Macha) Balcar, Sr., will gather for the third annual Vacek and Balcar Reunion on Sunday, May 29, 1977 at the KJT Hall in Ammansville.

The reunion will begin with a 9:30 a.m. Czech mass at St. John Catholic Church at Ammansville, honoring the deceased members of the two families and their descendants. Msgr. John Hanacek of La Grange, will be the celebrant.

A reception will be held in the hall, near the church, and each family is asked to bring enough food for dinner and supper, as well ls plates, napkins, cups, and silverware. Coffee and tea will be provided.

A short business meeting, games, visiting and dance, with music by the Orsak Band, will follow dinner.

Guests are welcome.

President * * Orsak Reunion The 27th annual reunion of the descendants of Joe and Pauline Orsak will be held on May 29th, beginning at 11 a.m., at the same location as last year, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Hall at Red Hill in El Campo. Each family is to bring a basket lunch. * * Frnka Family Reunion -- June 12 The Frnka family reunion will be held June 12th at St. Roch's Parish Hall in Mintz. Mintz is located right off I-10, which is about 11 miles east of Columbus. Take exit on Farm Road 949 and go about 3 miles. Ron and Evelyn Frnka, are president and secretary and they will conduct the morning meeting. A barbecue lunch will be served and you are asked to bring your favorite pastry. A table will be set up for pictures or any Czech items of interest, old or new. Two travel films on Czechoslovakia are scheduled, plus music to dance to.

An original Ctech costume will be modeled also.

TO ALL SALES REPRESENTATIVES Dear Fellow Workers: ANNOUNCING INSURANCE SALES CONTEST In our Board of Directors meeting held in January, 1977, a proposal was approved to sponsor a 3-month sales contest, based on annualized premiums, preceding the Texas Fraternal Congress.

Wednesday, May 18, 1977 The winner will be' one sales representative from each district writing insurance with a total of highest annualized premiums during the contest.

Minimum Annualized Premiums Must Amount to at Least $300 to Qualify.

The award to the winning sales representative will be an expense paid trip consisting of 15c a mile for travel, lodging, meals and registration fee for one person to the Texas Fraternal Congress, plus $25 if the spouse attends.

Also, the same award to the first 4 runners-up, regardless from which district they may be, but excluding the $25 for the spouse.

In case of inability of the winner to attend the Texas Fraternal Congress, an award of $175 will be substituted for first place and an award of $150 to the first 4 runners-up.

A watch to the 5th, 6th, and 7th iriunners-up in the state, or la monetary gift of $50. In all cases the annualized premium must amount to at least $300 in order to qualify for the above awards.

In case of a tie, the number of members will determine the winner.

Date of Contest May 1, 1977 — July 31, 1977 Deadline will be decided by July 31st postmark.

LODGE NO. 49, ROWENA Dear Members and Friends: Our next meeting will be held Sunday, June 5th at 2 p.m. in the SPJST Hall.

There are several important issues to discuss which will be to your benefit, therefore', make it a point to come.

Our hall is in need of repairs

5 for which President Elizabeth Walther appointed a committee to investigate the cost.

Meanwhile, our local lodge has participated in the second Festival of Ethnic Cultures April 30th, in Ballinger, county seat of Runnels County, to which the May Day celebration was added this year.

The Czech booth was under the direction of Sister Pat Urban, chairman of the Czech division.

Last year we ran out of kolache' early in the day. This year Sister Urban was determined to have enough kolache to keep us in business for two days!

Sister Urban asked Brother Phil Lolling, who operates the Lowake Steak House, to loan us the use of his electric bread-mixing machine, which he graciously let us use in the following weeks. Five of the Lodge 49 sisters helped Sister Urban with the task of making the kolache. The first batch turned out 29 dozen, the second 31 dozen, and the third 21 dozen. Other sisters baked kolache at home and brought them to the festival, so that we had over 100 dozen. Cinnamon rolls, 5 loaves of light bread, and 5 packages of garden fresh asparagus were also brought.

The following sisters, along with Sister Urban, participated either at home or with the group, for which we sincerely thank them.

They are: Mary Maracek, Mary Kudlacek, Ella Kudlacek, Minnie Pavlicek, Millie Polasek, Mary Jones, Annie Faltisek, Julie Lisso, Elizabeth Urbanek, Emma Havlak, Elizabeth Walther, Mary Dusek, and Pauline Shiller.

Our special thanks go to Sister Urban for the use of her kitchen; to Brother Emil Havlak and Emma Havlak for setting up our booth on the courthouse square, to Linda and David Urbane'k for the use of their deep freezer to store our kolace, to the Joe Havlak Polka Band and the Wall Polka Dancers who provided entertainment for the Czech group. Brother Stanley and Sister Martha. Bros, who donated $5 and, if by chance, we have overlooked anyone who helped to make this affair successful, we respectfully offer our thanks.

The proceeds will go toward the building fund, or the cost of repairs.

Lodge No. 49 is cordially extending an invitation to the officers of

Lodge 160, San Angelo, and their spouses to attend our meeting.

We' will have a covered dish meal, so sisters, bring extra food for our guests.

After the business meeting we will have a social hour during which time you may visit, play dominoes, or cards. We' are looking forward to seeing all of you on June 5th.

LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends: Sunday was a beautiful day and we hope all you mothers had a good day.

We want to thank all the sisters for the good food brought in and a special thank-you to Sister Mary Renfro for the delicious fried chicken. The dinner was enjoyed by all, and the mothers were busy opening their gifts.

Our meeting was called to order by President Brother Jerry Milan. After the pledge' of allegiance, the members stood in a moment of silent tribute to our deceased Brother Dave Melville, and Sisters Theresa Miller, Clarice Spurlock and Annie Korteff.

We were happy to have Mr. Kurt Libbs with us.

Brother Steinman gave a report on the Workshop held in. Ennis, and I gave a report on the District III meeting. Brother Milan reported the Easter picnic was a huge success and with the beautiful weather, had a large attendance and he extended a special thank-you to Sister Tirk and Brother and Sister Roy and Lydia Alholm for the use of the farm and their gracious hospitality.

A Mother's Day greeting was read from Brother and Sister Virgil and Eva Dockery of Isfahan, Iran, and a thank-you from Brother Joe Spurlock.

New members accepted and made welcome are: Jas. Hamilton, Jr., Virginia Hamilton, Mathew James Curl, Ray Dan Jeter, Jacqueline Jeter, Merritt Gerard Merlick, Billie Sanders and Bill Mc Cullough.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the family of Brother George Korteff on the loss of his wife, Sister Annie Korteff after a lengthy illness. Everyone has fond memories of all the goodies and good food Sister Korteff prepared, and she always had a smile on her face. She will be missed.

We also extend our sincere sympathy to Brother Bohus Maly and and family on the loss of his sister, Agnes Roznovsky, of Hobbs, New Mexico.

We are happy to report that Sister Bonnie Steinman came home on Mother's Day and is re cuperating nicely.

We want to wish Brother Frankie Milan, who is in All Saint's Hospital, a speedy recovery.

Congratulations are extended to our graduates: Patricia Lynn Mason and Rome Milan from High School, and Marilyn Milan from Tarrant County Junior College Northwest and all graduates. May you all have a successful future.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON

Saturday night's dance with music by the famous Blumes Orchestra drew a full house of jolly people. Mother's day was the following day, and the committee had a special for all the ladies present that night. The admission price for ladies was reduced to $1 and during the first intermission five beautiful hanging baskets were given away to five lucky ladies. First — the oldest mother present, second — the youngest mother, third — the youngest grandmother (and she was only 36 years old), fourth — the mother with the most. children (bless her, she is raising 15 offspring) and the fifth prize went to the grandmother with the most grandchildren and we had one with 23 to cheer her up, In addition to the baskets, each one was given a free pass to our dance.

The dance was hosted by an unusual group of lovely members, with three generations serving on the committee to greet the flow of guests. Lynn Lesak was in charge that night, with his wife, Lin, by his side. Lin's parents, Mary Frances and Richard Wahlberg and Lin's grandparents Norval and Frances Crossman. It is also noteworthy to mention that District V also has the privilege of being served by a three-generation group and they are: Norval Crossman, first vice president, his Son-in-law, Richard Wahlberg, youth counselor, and grandson, Mark Wahlberg, flag bearer.

If other lodges or districts that have three or more generations involved in our SPJST activities it would be nice to let it be known.

Around Tables 31 and 32 several couples were in a happy mood to celebrate the 61st wedding anniversary of their dear friends, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan and Elsie Perry.

They were united in holy matrimoney May 5th, 1916 and were

blessed with three sons, two are close by, living in Houston, and one son is in La Grange. These three sons presented their parents with nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Elsie and Ivan are happy and proud of their family and friends. Best wishes to you and many more.

At table 9 Bob and Elvira Wichus celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. The wedding took place May 8, 1932. To make this the high light of the evening this lovely couple whirled around to the tunes of the "Anniversary Waltz" and their friends, Gus and Ann Gerlich, Millie and Gus Kruschke (Gus and Ann are brothers and sisters), Lena and Bill Knippling; they all enjoyed the' evening. Happy anniversary to both couples.

Brother Billy Krismer, son of our Sister Ruth Duncan, recently visited his family here in Houston, eSpecilally to celebrate Mother's Day with his mother. Billy is working on the pipe line in Alaska (since 1974). Billy and his wife, Sandra, are proud of their three daughters, Kathy 19, Tracy 17, and Connie 15, and so is grandmother Ruth Duncan.

Brothet Harry and Sister Lillian Finn ventured out of Houston for two special weeks to enjoy the feeling of taking a chance. They we're not satisfied to stay in Las Vegas they stayed two days in Reno and spent some time at Lake Tahoe and returned refreshed and with lots of experience.

Harry and Lillian are two special people; they enjoy living and they do it well. More power to yoU! Seth Duncan, husband of Ruth (our Lodge 88 youth leader) was surprised on his birthday by' friends. Helen and King licg.wood planned this special event to celebrate Seth's birthday which fell on May 5th but they all congre'gated on Sunday, May 1st. They all enjoyed the get-together which will be remembered for a long time.

Our Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox and his wife, Viola, are planning on vacationing in Washington, D.C. in the near future and exploring all the historic places. I always feel and say, that everyone should go to Washington, D.C. When we made our trip and I stood in front of the Lincoln Me-

Brother Emil Slanina's grandson, Russ Emil Smith, after his serious operation a month or so ago, he is allowed to spend his weekends at home with the family, but is under his doctor's care in Walter Reed Hospital in Maryland during the week. I know it is a relief to his grandfather Slanina and we also hope Russ will be well soon.

One of our members, Sister Bertha Moritz, was out driving with her friehd and enjoying the• day, when an inconsiderate driver suddenly stopped in front of them and she had to slam on the brakes which made Bertha hit the foot board and she sprained her ankle, even now after a couple of weeks, she is black and blue, not to mention the pain. Bertha suftfered.

That does not keep her at home.

She stays busy as a bee all the time.

Mrs. Lydia Jarisch, mother of our Brother H. J. Jarisch, passed away at the age of 88 on May 1st, and was laid to rest May 3rd in New Braunfels. She is survived by six children, three sons and three daughters: Del Rose Nusbaum of San Marcos, Elizabeth and Dollie Pape from Nevada, H. J. Jarisch of Houston, Wilbur Jarisch of New B)raunfels, and Othmer Jarisch, of California. We express our heartfelt sympathy to our brother and the family.

A very unusual episode happened when I was roaming from table to table talking to our guests. I stopped at Table 34 and introduced myself as the Lodge 88 reporter and found out I was speaking to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rafenp who is the brother of my neighbor across the street for ten years. They had two tables reserved (34 and 35) and all the couples enjoyed the dance and they said they hardly ever missed a Saturday dance because they loved our lodge.

a lot of fun, especially if on is lucky and luck stays with you.

Five adventurous members, Joe and Della Miksch, Edward and Agnes Miculka and Ellen Gill ventured down to Delta Downs in Louisiana to spend two days. They departed Friday and came back Sunday.

Della must have had a rabbit's foot behind her left ear, the way luck stayed with her and her spouse, Joe, the' same way; well more power to both. They all enjoyed the weekend; it was different. It was fun and they are ready to go again. I don't know if anyone will be interested to know what I have done over the weekend when I skipped my news letter in the Vestnik, but I will tell you anyway. For the first time in my life I was in a dance competition which was held in Dallas and to my surprise I came out second in rumba and foxtrot. I enjoyed this challenge tremendously and my plaque and ribbons are on the wall with all the other SPJST. I am not bragging, but I did pat myself on the shoulder.

Dear Members and Friends: Our May meeting opened Tuesday, May 3rd, at 7:30 p.m. with President Charlie Matcek leading us in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

The minutes were read by Secretary Mary Werner and they were approved as read.

A thank-you letter was received and read from the family of Frances Palat and also a letter from Brother Louis Hanus of Lodge 88.

Reports were read by Treasurer Corlis Vallet, Financial Secretary Allen Zwahr and Spe'cial Treasurer Gilbert Walzel. All the reports were accepted by the members present.

A warm welcome is extended to our new member, Clarence Lee Orchard II; and Brother Lloyd A. Zwahr took out additional insurance.

The lodge wishes to express a sincere P vmpathy to Sister Allene Zwahr on the loss of her beloved father, Mr. W. R. Arnie.

In last week's issue I reported the donations to our Czech Fest booth. Corrections are needed and they are as follows: Winniefred Susan and Vlasta Baca were left out of the quilting group. In the donation part it should have read: Sister Corlis Vallet donated 8 loaves of bread, instead of 3; and Sister Winnietred Susan donated 9 loaves of bread, instead of 5.

Sorry the errors were made. Brother and Sister Leroy Kamas donated $10 cash. Thank you, Brother Kamas.

President Matcek read a lengthy report pertaining to the Hallettsville workshop; explaining what Fraternalism is all about.

The Auditing Committee met on April 18 at 7 p.m. to audit the books of the lodge. All were found in good order. Brother Curtis Walzel read the report.

Sister Emily Kolaja reported that she attended all the meetings concerning the Czech-Fest and gave a brief summary on some of its outcome. She stressed the need of more of the members to become involved in this worthwhile project.

The refund checks were given out and the door prize was won

by Sister Corlis Vallet, who in turn, gave it back to the lodge.

Secretary Sister Jo Prochaska arrived late, due to taking her father, Brother Joe Vitek, to the hospital, so the minutes will be read at our next meeting. All other reports were approved as read.

A Mother's Day greeting was read from Brother and Sister Virgil and Eva Dockery from Isfahan.

Iran and a thank you note from Brother Belota. We are happy to report he is doing much better, A get-well card was signed and sent to Brother Vitek who is in the Azle Community Hospital and we wish him a speedy recovery.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Sisters Bessie Prochaska, Annie Belota, and Brother Jeff Maly and their families on the loss of their sister, Agnes Roznovsky in New Mexico.

We urge all members to be present at our next meeting Wednesday, June 1st, at 10:30 a.m., because we will plan our family night for our July meeting.

CZECH MOVIES A new series of beautiful colored motion pictures in English will be shown in Sokol Houston Auditorium Friday, May 27th. Admission is free and everyone is invited.

There was a great number of inquiries, not only from the members of our fraternal societies, but also from the general public and especially the young people. We are genuinely happy to be able to repeat these evenings of films showing our ancestral culture, arts, history, music and the colorful folklore. These are again profes-

sional films from Prague and I know you will enjoy them.

Starting at 7 p.m.. tasty sandwiches and other refreshments will be' available while you listen to new tapes of ever-melodious Czech-Moravian polkas and march music performed by a 100-piece brass band, and you will enjoy this musical interlude. Films will begin at 7:30 p.m. and again preceded by a short historical introduction by Brother John J. Pech, whose reviews are always enjoyable.

The preparatory arrangements were made by Brothers Art Lund, chairman of the board, Emil Kuropata, president of Sokol Houston, and John J. Pech. This fine arts program is a cultural project presented free to the general public by the Sokol Houston Society. Invite your friends.

We started our rehearsal on time and sang many of the old favorites that everyone loved to sing so much as well as some of the newer songs. We sang "Happy Birthday" to the following people who have birthdays in May: Mary Vasicek, Alfred Klusacek and Bill Kosarek. After rehearsal we had a short business meeting.

Minute's were read and approved as read from our last meeting. The trophy won at the Rogers Homecoming parade was presented. The invitation to sing and dance the Beseda at the Cameron Folk Festival on June 11th was discussed,

and it was agreed that as many as possible to participate; however, this will be discussed at our next regular meeting and we hope all of you come out for our next regular rehearsal, which will be on Tuesday, May 24th, at 8 p.m. and please be on time.

LODGE NO. 74, LOVELADY Dear Members and Friends: We had just come from the great Ennis Polka Festival and it is getting bigger every year; about 80,000 people came there to enjoy the! festival to see the parade, which was approximately 4 miles long and took over an hour to pass through town.

A good turnout at Lodge 74 in Lovelady Saturday, May 7th, with music provided by The Music Masters, was enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

Lodge President Rudy Hafner resigned as well as our Recording Secretary Dorothy Smith. We appreciate both of their services to the lodge. Brother Hafner is now in Brenham, and he could not perform his duties to the lodge. Brother Johnny Johnson will now take over the full responsibility of the first president. Jerry Michka will serve' as first vice president. Other officers were scheduled to be selected at the trustees' meeting, May 11th.

We are looking forward to a united lodge and hopefully we can reach 100 percent membership attendance at our regular lodge meetings; in fact, I am looking forward to reaching such a record.

We were sorry to learn that we had several members on the sick list ; by now, I hope all of you are well and feeling better.

I will report to you in the next report because there may be some new changes since' we have a new president; there will not be any changes in our regular monthly meeting schedule, Saturday night dances, or social games on Thursday nights.

STUDENTS TAKING CZECH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON L to R: Professor Teofil Halama, Czech instructor, Gary Gandy, Clarice O'Hare, Ramona Gore, Patrick Humphrey, Marie Jo Janak, Thomas Novak, Stephen Kutra, Harvey Fajkus, Mike Thompson, Ronald Proehazka, Kelley Angel, Charles Whitmer, and Thomas Lukish.

Representatives of the University of Houston Czech language classes and Mr. Teofil Halama, instructor, recently attended the fourth Annual Conference of Texas Czech Students and Teachers, held in Taylor on April 23rd. The students actively participated in the various activities, lending verve to the educational and cultural events, and completing a noteworthy year for Texas Czechs.

The students first set up a booth, showing slides of Czechoslovakia and Czech towns in Texas, presenting materials relevant to life in both areas, and information on current and future Czech classes at the University of Houston under Mr. Halama's tutelage. Buttons and T-shirts proudly proclaimed to all the possession of Czech heritage.

The program was designed to show pride in achieving skill with the Czech tongue, and this was done best by Nick Morris, the president of SPJST, who skillfully blended Czech with English in his address concerned with the present state of the language in Texas schools. Enthusiasm was generated by the many speakers acquaint-

ing the audience with new legislation providing for instruction in a language (other than English) at the grade-school level when duly requested by sufficient numbers of interested parents. Bilingual education had heretofore been interpreted by many as including only Spanish instruction, and thus many parents have been missing an opportunity to have their children learn Czech in their home communities. This highlight of the convention was matched only by the current events at the colleges and universities, where interest is picking up among adults with Czech backgrounds. It was stressed that activity is the only way to ascertain that Czech is more widely taught — activity in contacting school administrators, legislators and other potential pupils and parents of pupils.

The social and cultural events comprised the latter portion of the program. The University of Houston added to the programs of the other schools by presenting an original multi-lingual play "Jaro,"

by Etienne Bellay, a U of H student, and Dr. Glenn F. Sternes (also in Mr. Halama's classes) per-

formed "Koline, Koline" by Suk and "The Beer Barrel Polka" by Vejvoda, on the piano.

Events were concluded with a social hour, dinner, and a dance.

CZECH STUDIES PLANNED FOR FALL SEMESTER Plans for the study of Czech this fall in several Gulf Coast schools are underway or at print this very moment.

Conversational Czech studies at Spring Branch Independent School District, Houston, will be presented again. This will be the third consecutive term, of study. Registration days are scheduled for August 22-26 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Memorial High School. Classes will convene on September 1st. As in the past, the class will meet each Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Conversational Czech at Alvin Community College, Alvin, will begin September 6th, with registration at that time or daily prior to the beginning date. This Czech course is starting its seventh term of ten weeks duration and meets every Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

to attend these classes in preparation for college level study.

Several universities throughout the state offer Czech credit courses.

Anyone interested in reviewing his speech, diction or writing of Czech should join either of these working classes. Those who are rank beginners will find the study stimulating and interesting. You are invited to come to class to learn more about the country, heritage, language and culture of your ancestors.

LODGE NO. 180, BURLESON Dear Members: Our regular meeting of Lodge 180 was held April 21st, 1977, at 7 p.m.

We were happy to have our new social member, Brother Edmond Hejl with us and hope he will be' with us often.

Sister Smajstrla reported she sent get-well cards to Donna Pustejovsky and our District III Director Sid Pokladnik; and also Sister Marie Hampton, who had a toe surgery and we were glad to have her with us.

If you know of anyone who is ill, please be sure •and notify Sister Smajstria or one of our officers.

Several members of the building committee have been busy looking at various buildings and gathering information. We hope to be able to meet with some of the Supreme

Lodge officers and get some information that will help us get our lodge home started.

An additional appointment to the land committee is Brother Eugene Holacka, and to the building committee is Brother George Rippin.

New member and transferee accepted were George P. Wilganoski, and Christopher G. Wilganoski. We are happy to have them with us and hope to see them at our meetings.

Our next meeting will be May 19th, at 7 p.m., at the F&M State Bank, 201 W. Ellison, Burleson, in the Community Room. Our SL President Nick Morris and District III Director Sid Pokladnik of Dallas will be showing a slide documentation of the SPJST. I hope to see all of you then.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS SOFTBALL TEAM REPORT Dear Brothers and Sisters: The' Monday night, May 2nd game again was rained out and it will be played as a make-up game.

Tuesday night, May 3rd, we played Mark III team in our City Major League and we' won our second game in this league by taking a 5 to 4 win in 15 innings. Yes, that's right! We played until 11:45 p.m., in one of the best and longest games ever played by our team.

Ralph Stamm hurled the first 9 1/3 innings, allowing 9 hits, no walks and striking out 4 batters.

As he tired in the bottom of the 10th inning, Lionel Schulz relieved Ralph and pitched shut-out ball allowing 1 hit, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts, and gained • credit for the win; both pitchers received good support afield while 3 errors were committed, and many

grand plays were made by out team. Offensively, we had a total of 13 hits, the big hit was made in the 6th inning by Galen Lindsey, our catcher; he hit a 2-run homer tieing the score, 3-3. We scored again in the 8th inning and they tied us in the bottom of the 8th, and the score remained tied until the top of the 15th inning when Roy Andrews got to second on an error, Robert Weyman's single moved him to third, and then Galen Lindsey drove in the winning run with a smash to left center; this was a game of games, even the fans refused to go home despite the fact they were losing precious hours of sleep. We thank them for staying and rooting for the team: it does help.

Galen Lindsey was the leading hitter with a home run; 2 singles and a walk; Don Jarma had a single, a double and a walk; Connie Brennan had 2 singles, and 2 sacrifice hits; Roy Andrews had 2 singles; Robert Weyman had a single and a walk; Jeff Burton, a single and a sacrifice; Don Lennox had a double; Joe Nobles had a walk; Mark Winkler had a Tingle; and Ralph Stauss had a walk.

Our Monday Night League has been moved from Lawnview Diamond No. 2 to Everglades Park, which is located on Jim Hiller Road, just off of Samuel Blvd.; that's a good move for our league.

Monday Night Scheduled Games: May 23 — at 7:15 p.m.

Tuesday Night Scheduled Gaines May 24, at 7:15 p.m. (played at Samuel Grand Diamond No. 1).

I would like to report that our Saturday night, April 30 Dance was a financial success, though not a huge success as we' had hoped for. Our ad in the Vestnik was not printed as submitted. It should have included the words "Annual Softball Team Benefit Dance" and we) feel this hurt .our attendance to some degree. Our editor told us he was sorry he did not catch the error in time. We' appreciate the help and assistance he gives to the team and know it was an accidental mistake'.

We thank Lillie Jarmo. and Ida Schulz who were in charge of the kitchen, also all of the wives and members who helped them during the evening.

We also thank the orchestra, The Country Boys for furnishing such good and peppy music; everyone who attended had an enjoyable evening. In addition to our thanks to all the players who helped at the door and for inviting your friends to the dance because this really helped or we wouldn't have had the attendance we did.

Our thanks also to the people who attended, however, it was noticed that a lot of our members who, in the past years, attended our dance were missing perhaps due to the mixup in our ad. When there is a benefit sponsored by our lodge whatever it is, softball team, teens, or the teenagers' princess ball, it is essential that the membership take this into consideration and attend these special functions.

Please keep this in mind for the Princess Ball in July; they will appreciate your help and presence, just as we did at our annual dance.

We are most grateful and deeply appreciate the help and support that we received from everyone.

TO ALL MEMBERS OF DISTRICT IV: The following are the uncorrected minutes of our District IV meeting.

President Arthur Lisso asked me to express his regrets and explain his inability to attend this meeting; he was stricken with an acute case of laryngitis and, therefore, was unable to preside.

Members of SPJST District IV met April 24, 1977, in Mackenzie Terrace, 407 East Broadway, Lub-

bock.

In the absence of President Arthur Lisso, Vice President Ernest Kristine'k, Jr., brought the meeting to order at 2 p.m.

Brother Kristinek welcomed the members and the visitors. The pledge of allegiance to the flag was recited by the assembly, which was followed by the singing of our verse of America.

The vice president asked Sister Pauline Shiller, secretary to read the names of deceased members of the district. Nineteen members have departed from our midst since April 27, 1976 to April 22, 1977; of these six were from Lodge No. 49, three from Lodge 73; one from Lodge No. 76; one from Lodge 77, one from Lodge 95, three from Lodge 157, and four from Lodge 160.

The following lodges responded to roll call: Lodge 49, Rowena, 4 members; Lodge 73, Seymour, 6; Lodge 79, Wichita Falls, 0; Lodge 77, Bomarton, 0; Lodge 85, Munday, 0; Lodge 90, Stamford, 0; Lodge 95, Seymour, 0; Lodge 134, Crowell, 0; Lodge 157, Lubbock, 32; and Lodge 160, San Angelo, 4.

Roll call revealed all officers present except the president; the flag bearer was also absent.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the secretary. Brother Emil Havlak moved that they be accepted as read. The motion was seconded and accepted.

Correspondence pertained to letters from Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris, Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, and Vestnik Editor R. J. Sefcik, all sending their regrets in not being able to attend because of other engagements.

A letter from American Sokol Organization of Chicago soliciting advertising in their XIV American Slet 1977 Historical Souvenir Program was turned down.

Sister Julie Kveton, treasurer, gave her yearly report. She disclosed a balance of $510.59 for December 1976; and $689.99 balance as of April 1977. A discussion of the 5 cent assessment per member of each lodge in the di strict to help defray expenses of the host lodge was held. Each lodge is to send their check to Sister Theresa prewell, Rzute 10, Box 7, Lubbock 79409, for this year.

12 Stanley Broz, District IV director, gave his report. He welcomed Brother Lebnard D. Mikeska, Supreme Lodge secretary-treasurer, and Mrs. Mikeska, Brother Silas Smith, State Field Manager, and thanked our host Lodge No. 157, for having invited us to Lubbock for our meeting.

Director Broz announced the resignation of District IV Sales Representative Victor Brenek, Jr., and the need for another sales representative. He stated that his replacement is to be appointed by the vice president with the approval of the district director.

Director Broz stated the financial status of the district is excellent; that the loans are going real well.

He disclosed that Lodge No. 49, Rowena, is planning remodeling, and Lodge No. 160, San Angelo, has appointed a building committee to investigate the cost of building a new hall of Lodge 160. He said that the district director is the "go-between" local lodges and the Supreme Lodge.

The district has lost the San Angelo Youth Club. He said State Youth Director Dorothy Massey is always available to organize new youth clubs.

Director Broz said the district has a claim on longevity as it has had two members to outlive the insurance acturial tables, Dr. J. J. Shiller of Rowena Lodge No. 49, and Sister Ann Vojkuvka of Haskell, Lodge 85, Munday.

Emil Haviak, District IV Rest Homes director reported good management of the homes, and full occupancy of both houses. He said they do have a tax problem; since they are being operated as a charitable institution, he felt they should not be taxed. He stated the case is still in court.

Sister Mary Haisler, District IV youth counselor said that she did not have a youth program for the meeting, but that the youth had food and craft items to sell.

Sister Haisler stated that District IV received three trophies at state; Joseph Macha 2, and Jena Haisler 1. Jane Kveton was our contestant in Royalty. This year's state royalty contest awards for king and queen are $25, and for duke and duchess, $15.

Twenty-four youth attended District IV Camp at Palo Duro Can-

yon; there were 6 chaperones, and youth leaders and 13 visitors. The youth allocation was $954; $128.90 was left in the fund.

Sister Haisler and her assistant, Henrietta Pavliska, attended the Youth ,Leaders' Retreat at VW Verde.

Sister Haisler announced the following: May 3 — Youth Leader Training at her home, 10 a.m., June 12 — YAD at Seymour (deadline is May 23); Camp — August 3-6 at Val Verde; Royalty — September 24, at Elgin, and State YAD — September 25 at Temple High School.

Leonard D. Mikeska, SL secretary-treasurer, reported $500 had been allocated to the youth fund, and $250 for general expenses.

He reported a net gain of 1,474 members for the SPJST with $9 million of insurance in force.

He said the Society is growing and the fraternal aspect is kept alive, "Fraternalism is more alive now than it was 18 years ago," he added. He thanked everyone involved with the Society, and encouraged small as well as large sales.

He said money comes from the benefits of the Society in the form of refunds, funds for the youth, and rest home donations.

He also repeated his pleasure in working with. Stanley Broz, our district director. He invited all the members to visit the Home Office and view their outstanding Library, Archives, and Museum.

State Field Manager Silas Smith gave his report. There were seven District VII sales representativeS present Brother Silas Smith stated that Brother Joe B. Hejny sent his regards.

Unfinished business: The District IV secretary is to notify the district treasurer to pay district officers for the years 1976 and 1977.

New business: Brother Mikeska reported Sister Angeline Kristinek's attendance of the Publication Committee meeting and her excellent representation of the district.

Sister Mary Haisler asked for expense reinbursement for Assistant Youth Director Henrietta Pavliska, of at least $15, since she has been paying her out of her own salary.

She said the money would encourage Sister Pavliska to attend

YAD, camp, etc.

Sister Edith Barton moved the district pay Sister Pa.vliska. $15 per meeting, with Sister Lillian Williams seconding the motion.

The motion passed.

Brother Broz told the sales representatives that they have $250 in the fund to spend on a, goodmeal. The time and place are to be appointed.

The election of officers followed.

For president, Brother Emil Kvasnicka nominated Brother Ernest Kristinek, Jr., and requested that he be elected by acclamation.

Brother Willie Bodnar seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Brother Kristinek is our new president. For 1st vice president, Brother William Urbanek was nominated by Brother &rill Haviak.

Sister Lillian Williams seconded the motion.

Sister Dianne Pelzel moved that Brother Urbanek be elected by acclamation. The motion passed.

Brother Urbanek is our 1st vice president.

For 2nd vice president Sister Angeline Kristinek nominated John Kveton. John Kveton nominated Arthur Lisso. Brother Ha y -lakmovedlnmiatosce.

Brother Raynard Macha seconded the motion. Brother Kveton received 15 votes, Brother Lisso 16 votes. Brother Lisso is our second vice president.

Brother William Urbanek, Lodge No.. 49, invited District IV to Rowena for the 1978 meeting on the fourth Sunday in April.

Vice President Kristinek adjourned the meeting. A barbecue supper followed the meeting. The host lodge provided barbecued beef, smoked turkey, a great variety of salads, kolache, cakes, pies, tea, and coffee.

ATTENTION, MUSICIANS OF CENTRAL TEXAS

We are trying to reactivate what was once known as the District It Concert Band, primarily in time for our annual lodge picnic at Lodge No. 47, Seaton, July 24th, but with the success of such a group at some of the other lodges, we would like to make it a permanent performing group. We are not only asking the former members of this group, but also new members to join us.

We are calling a rehearsal for Thursday, May 26th, at 7:30 p.m. in Seaton Star Hall. Please bring your instruments; we will provide the sheet music and, of course, you must be able to read music in order to play with such a group.

We regret that the former director, Mr. Reggie Ludwig, former longtime leader of the famous HiTopper Orchestra, can no longer assume the directorship of this group, however, we are fortunate in having the services of a very

ANNIE ZABRANSIEY 1st in Shorthand Competition

Miss Annie Zabransky, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Zabransky of Breslau Community in Lavaca County, won first place in the District 25-AA shorthand competition held recently in Brenham.

The competition provided a 5minute dictation of new material at a speed of 80 words a minute, on which Miss Zabransky had only one error.

Mrs. Joyce Petrich, UIL Shorthand Coach and business teacher at Ilallettsville High School, feels that Annie will have a good chance to win when she competes in the regional competition.

(Annie is a memiber of Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville, and carves as president of the youth club and has been credited with several achievements in the SPJST youth activities. --Editor.)

After the meeting we enjoyed an evening of roller skating and bruises. A special thanks to all the youth leaders who brought their youth clubs to his meeting.

Letters From The Youth LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members, A special called meeting was held May 11th at our lodge. President Jimmy Zahirniak presided over the meeting but stepped aside while the president's chair was being considered for election.

After nominations were off the floor and in order, each nominated candidate was given a chance to speak up before they were dismissed from the room for counting votes.

We feel that , Lodge 54 Youth Club will have another slate of officers who will serve our club and lodge well for the remainder of the year.

A thank-you was expressed to the outgoing officers and committees for keeping the youth club in the informative, educational and entertainment circle.

Our youth leaders prepared a dough craft and social evening after the meeting.

It was announced that four youth club members will receive a prize from Mrs. Maxine Sefcik for their perfect attendance record.

They are: Darlene, Jimmy, Laurie and Jackie Zahirniak. It was also stated that President Jimmy Zah-

irniak presided at all 12 meetings in 1976-77 for our club and also conducted every meeting efficiently. We thank him for his services.

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Members and Friends, The Seaton Youth Club held its regular monthly meeting May 6th 7:30 p.m.

Katherine Morris called the meeting to order by asking Gayle Wilson to lead us in the pledge of allegiance to the U. S. Flag and club motto.

Joyce Pechal read the minutes and called the roll in the absence of our secretary: who was away on a band trip. There were 36 members present. The minutes were approved as read. Two visitors we're Shelia Prewitt and Mrs. Wilson.

A big thank you goes to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Chupik and Mr. and Mrs. Emil Hejl who gave their check for cleaning to the youth club members after our fundraising dance which was held in April. We appreciate the money because it will help us very much.

3n enwritun RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned resolution committee of Lodge Karnes No. 93, Hobson, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, ANNA SHORTNER, of Karnes City, who died on 26 February, 1977. She was 87 years, 6 months, and 28 days of age.

Sister Shortner was born in Czechoslovakia, the daughter of John and Helen Linhart. Three months later they migrated to Texas, landing at Galveston, eventually making their home in Hallettsville. On October 20th, 1913, she was married to Jacob Shortner at Hobson, where the newlyweds resided for several years. Later they moved to the New Bremen Community where they engaged in farming and ranching for the rest of their lives.

Sister Shortner joined the SPJST in November, 1920, becoming a member of Lodge 93. Although she never held office in the local lodge, she ably assisted her husband in his duties as lodge president and convention delegate. She was a loving housewife and mother who always found time to aid those in need. Her husband, in his autobiography, described her as: "The greatest blessing and lowliest flower in my life."

She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Ann Abernathy of Kenedy, Mrs. Jerry (Edge) Brash and Mrs.

Pat (Lillie Schramek of Victoria, Mrs. Oscar (Bessie) Becker of Alice, and Mrs. John (Viola) Stevens of Brady; son, August Shortner of Karnes City; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Jacob, and son, Edward, preceded her in death.

Requiem mass was said Monday morning February 28, 1977 at 10:30 o'clock in St. Cornelius Catholic Church, with Rev. Thomas Palmer officiating. Burial followed in Karnes City Cemetery.

Prasek SPJST — EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee, on behalf of the membership of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, CLARICE SPURLOCK, who passed away in a Taylor hospital, Sunday, April 24th, at the age of 64 years.

She was a native of Tlaorndale and had lived in Fort Worth most of her life. She was Fort Worth's first city councilwoman.

Sister Spurlock was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Meadowbrook United Methodist Church and Fort Worth Law Wives.

She was an honorary member of the Fort Worth Firefighters' Association and the Fort Worth Police Motorcycle Drill Team.

Sister Spurlock was a member of Lodge' 154 for 20 years.

Survivors include her husband, Second Court of Civil Appeals Judge Joe Spurlock; a daughter, Mrs. Kay Heizer of Richmond, Va.; two sons, Joe Spurlock, Jr., and Dean Spurlock, both of Fort Worth; six sisters and seven grandchildren.

Services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 26th, in Meadowbrook United Methodist Church, with Dr. Morgan Garrett officiating. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
