FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Recently, our office has received a nuather of letters, most of them mare or less personal, and two for publication which your editor has returned to the writers asking that they not request their publication because they would only cause controversy. We are thankful that both understood and agreed. Rest assured that this writer will answer any of those questions asked in those letters at the District VI meeting in Hilije, Sunday, May 22. The membership is entitled to have the answers if they are available to your editor. Some letters referred to the monthly statements from the Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr., which appear in the Vestnik each month, and stated that they do not understand them completely. Brother Mikulas can answer them better than yours truly, however, to answer as was requested to do so in the Vestnik, here it is: Appraisal Expense is the amount paid to the directors for appraising property for loans. Hospitalization is the amount the Supreme Lodge pays for hospitalization insurance on all employed by our SPJST — officers, employees, etc. In this issue, appears the April statement, on pages 16 and 17. Study it and it will give you some idea of income and expense for the month of April. As for the Supreme Lodge meeting expense which was asked about, the officers do NOT get

paid extra fOr these meetings; the expenses are for the directors per diem ($75 first day, plus $60 for each additional day, plus meals, mileage and lodging.) This was all covered in the "Proceedings of the XXIInd Convention," printed in the Vestnik some months back and is on page 41 of the printed "proceedings." As far Fraternal Activities, you will have to contact Brother Mikulas. In the April report you will find the expense for the Publication Committee to be

$845.10, however, may you be reminded that the Publication Committee did NOT call this meeting; the Supreme Lodge requested the PC to attend, so actually that was added cost of the Supreme Lodge meeting. Study the report and the list of Receipts and disbursements; they are there for your information. * * Since the convention in June,

1976; when the Finance Committee became a standing committee, the thought has crossed this editor's mind a number of times that this Finance Committee would do Justice to the Society and themselves if they met in the near future and acquainted themselves with the procedures of bookkeeping in our Supreme Lodge and went over all the vouchers and expenses for the past four years or so and get acquainted with it. From a personal standpoint your editor would welcome such an examination. The members are (by district) Mack Allen (I), Ben Zabcik Arnold Vrla (III), Victor Brenek, Jr. (IV), Jerry Prochazka (V), Rita Vanek (VI), and Monts., Foster (VU). * * Ten Commandments for Writing Better Fraternal and Business Letters

1. Be Clear: We can forgive a fraternal or business letter much if the meaning is clear. Say what you mean. Use short words. Re-
