A CHUCKLE be a severe loss to all of us mem(the deadline for filing income tax forms with the IRS, for most people) probably many of us felt like the lady in the center front page article. After reading line so and so, and referring to form so and so, and subtracting,, adding, multiplying, etc., we would have liked to add that one last line which is not on the printed form: ESP (Error Some Place), and entered the difference in the amount we arrived at and the amount we could not reconcile. * * Now that April 15th is gone and spring is here, let us look ahead and pledge ourselves to: 1) Attend meetings of our lodge as frequently as possible; 2) Take a more active part in the fraternal, cultural and recreational programs offered by our lodges and Society; 3) Assist in recruiting good, sound, new members of good character; 4) Bring a friend, relative or neighbor to the meeting with you; 5) Encourage your children to take part in all youth activities and volunteer to assist in the organization of youth clubs in your community.

The word "fraternalism" implies working toward a common cause. It exemplifies real American Democracy and cultivates a family spirit of mutual love and good will. That is especially true this year and at this time when the NPC motto is: "Fraternalism is a family affair," as we stated some weeks ago. Our Society which was founded and built on the rock foundation of these ideals, depends upon its members to promote these beautiful traditions and to carry on in the spirit of our founders.

It is, therefore, quite obvious that each member has an obligation to get involved and attend the meetings of their lodge and take part in the various programs. If we shirk our duties, our lodges will die off because of a lack of interest and our SPJST will no longer be permitted to continue as a fra-

bers because the SPJST would no longer be entitled to the tax exempt premium privileges and we all would lose the benefits of the lower cost life insurance we now enjoy as members of our Society. * * The District IV meeting date is April 24th in Lubbock. See the Bulletin Board and the 1st letter in "Letters' section for time, place and agenda. * * Not too long ago we had a very interesting and pleasant visit here in the office with Sister Lillie Skrivanek. It was a most enjoyable interlude from our daily routine for she is a very intellectual, entertaining and fraternal conversationalist. For those of you who don't know her, she is the wife of the now deceased Professor John Skrivanek of Bryan, who was instrumental in instituting the Czech courses at Texas A& M University and the author of several CZech course books. She is a most gracious person and speaks both Czech and English very fluently.

She has visited Czechoslovakia several times and our Society and Czech people certainly can be proud of her. * * This is late Thursday night, having just returned from the SL meeting where we heard the reports of SL Secretary-Treasurer

Mikeska and SL Financial Secretary Mikulas. They were both concise and good. Even with the additional increases in salaries and the convention expenses our solvency seems to remain rather stable, and we are glad to be able to report so. We are trying to wind this up so we can visit the SL meeting again tomorrow, Friday, April 15th, although it is a very busy day here at the print shop. We will have to report on that later.

NEWSBRIEFS Jaro. W. Rektorik, 84, of Robstown died Thursday, March 31st, after a long illness. Funeral services were held April 2nd at 2 p.m. at Robstown Funeral Home Chapel, burial followed in the Robstovrn Cemetery. Brother Rektorik was a long-time member of Lodge 117, Robstown. * * Mylie Glen White, 23, passed away Monday, April 11th, 1977.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at West End Baptist Church with Rev. Don Richards officiating, and interment was in Memorial Oaks in Houston. under the direction of Heights Funeral Home.

Brother White was a member of Lodge Stefanik No. 142, Houston. * * Barta Reunion The 9th annual Barta reunion will be held May 15th at Sulphur Park on the highway between Moulton and Shiner. Registration will began at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon and every family is asked to bring a basket lunch.

Music will be provided all evening.

TELEPHONE Dear Members: During the week of April 4th through about the 7th, some of you may have tried to contact the Supreme Lodge by telephone, but could not get through. Over the weeken4 the Temple Exchange was re-routed through the Austin Exchange, which involved a major changeover in operations. Toward the end of the week, things improved, but needless to say, it caused a good deal of mix-up and confusion. Some of the rural exchanges out of Temple were also out of order.

We are sorry if you had difficulty reaching us because we were open and all personnel were on duty, with the exception of Good Friday, which has been traditionally observed for a good many years. We trust that all problems are now resolved.

Fraternally yours, Pauline Shiller, District IV Secretary SPJST — LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Readers: Lodge No. 6 held its April meeting on Sunday, April 3, at 3:30 p.m. Youth members Delores Dobecka and Darrell Uptmor led the membership in reciting the pledge of allegiance. Delores then said the SPJST pledge.

President Krizan then asked the membership to stand in a few moments of silent tribute to our departed members, Valerie Smith and Joe Sumbera.

We had 43 members present at this meeting and guests were: Alvin Nesuda, Francis Chase, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Brem, Linda Gomez, Mike Bromhall, E. J. Seith, Nick Rizo, Bernadette Kutcherousky, and Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Blackwell.

All reports were approved as read. Upcoming activities for the youth include going to the rest home on April 13; April 15 were to have volleyball; April 17 is the

District III meeting, at Lodge No. 6, with district volleyball playoffs; and June 26 is YAD at Lodge 66.

Birthdays for the month of April include Buck Uptmor, Keith Hykel, Margaret Lander, George Straten, Karen Kutcherousky, Bobby Dobecka, Willie Helona, Joe Halmmik, Harvey Prnka, Melanie Mazanec, and E. J. Seith. Bobby Hykel brought the birthday cake.

Sister Lydia Dobecka reported sending the following cards during the month of March: get well — L. A. Ilykel and John Ondrez; sympathy — Charles Smith famil y ; birthday — Josie Mae Straten, Frank Popp, Cyrill Svrcek, Helen Mynar and Gary Marek.

After the adult meeting the youth presented their Easter program. The 10-year lodge picture was taken by Phil Van Duivendyk (this is a traditional picture taken once every ten years of all certificate holders). The youth then had their Easter egg hunt and this was followed by a delicious fried chicken supper with all the trimmings.

It was announced that Lodge No. 6 would have its annual picnic on July 17th.

A bottle of spirits was donated

by Brother Al Schuetz to help pay for the expenses of the Easter meal and this bottle of spirits was won by Ed Leonard. The youth sold tickets on a crock pot and this was won by Linda Gomez.

Door prize winners were: $2, Edith Brem; $10, Mary Ann Koener, not present; $10, Raymond Joe Hromadka, not present; $7, Richard Schroeder, not present.

The meeting was adjourned until Sunday, May 8, 1977, at 3:30 p.m.

The ladies are to bring a covered dish of meat and vegetable and salad or dessert (pastry). The Louis Mareks will entertain the lodge during the social hour with a program of films and slides from their recent travels to the Panama Canal. I'm sure all of you will enjoy this program, so mark this date on your calendar and we will be looking forward to seeing you then.

LODGE NO. 188, CENTERVILLE

Dear Members and Friends: If you were there you know, if you were not, it's regrettable, 'cause we really had a ball at the Saturday night dance, April 9th, with Rick Ellis and the Lone Star Express. A lot of the members had friends and relatives visiting for the Easter holidays and we were

pleased to have them with us. Rick has lots of relatives in Centerville and he and his band were treated to a delicious dinner before the dance at the home of Mr. Band Mrs. Garvin Ellis, Brother Bob McEachern and wife Gennie were in charge of the ticket office, assisted by chairman Sam Wingfield and wife Dorothy.

The Board of Trustees' reports that they are in the process of finalizing the deed for the five acres of land for the new lodge.

They have opened the bids and are conferring with the contractors at this time.

Entertainment Committee Chmn.

David Free, announced that we will be dancing to the music of a very fine band from Corsicana: The Country Wranglers, with vocalist Charlotte Hayes, on April 23rd. We will have a dance May 30th, but at this time he does not have a band lined up. Let's all come out and enjoy the dancing, because when the weather gets hot we may have to plan other entertainment. Bring your guests and show them what good times and good fellowship we enjoy.

Don't forget in leaving to clear your tables and take with you anything of value. The clean-up committee cannot be responsible for anything left at the tables.

Let's not forget our next monthly meeting, May 2nd, at 7:30 p.m.

Fraternally, Ima Ray Watson Reporter - SPJST LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE Lodge 107 Floresville held its regular monthly meeting at the lodge building at 3:30 p.m. President Bayer opened the meeting with the pledge of allegiance.

Rex Purchis, vice president, was the only officer absent.

The minutes were read and approved as read.

Treasurer Sralla gave a financial report.

Financial secretary reported some delinquent members and these are to be taken care of as soon as possible.

The secretary gave a report on the liability insurance on the lodge home; Flieller Insurance Agency will write up the policy.

All members agreed that this was a necessity and needed to be done as soon as possible.

Christine Baumann made a motion that the adult lodge furnish refreshments for the youth club party and meeting.

Deanna Hoelscher converted her JT policy and is now a member of the adult lodge. Sherrell Ann Parsons is also a new member.

President Bayer reported on the Memorial Fund. Sophie Sralla donated $20 in memory of Lukas Sralla. He also gave an income and expense account of our district meeting dinner. He thanked everyone for their generous donations and for all who worked so hard to make the dinner a success.

We are asked to announce that the youth club is having an aluminum can drive. Contact any youth club member, YL Polly Bayer, or President Bob Bayer. They will either pick up the cans or they can be delivered to the lodge and someone will take them to be sold. Proceeds from this drive are to be donated to the Memorial Fund.

Bob Bayer, Rex Purchis and Pauline Pavliska attended the training seminar in Hallettsville.

All reported a very informative and enjoyable day.

Vitt3TNfK just gotten back from the youth leaders' retreat and she spoke enthusiastically about the program.

The speaker was very impressive, cautioning all parents to be on the lookout for their youngsters and their religious cults that are springing up all over the country.

It's tragic to realize how quickly the children can be brain-washed.

Dances in the future were again discussed and tabled.

Anton Svoboda, asked the members if the Senior Citizens could use the lodge building for a social in May. Permission was granted.

This is one of the fraternal projects that our membership is always willing to do.

Our next meeting will be held May 1st at 3:30 p.m. Come out and join us, there is always room for more members.

Polly Bayer won the door prize of $5. Refreshments were served to a very nice crowd.

Pavliska Secretary - SPJST -THIS AND THAT FROM LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON The dance with the Knights of Dixie Saturday, April 9th, was, as usual, a formal dance and being Easter weekend, the ladies came out in their best and you never saw so many orchids; the Chandelier Ballroom looked like a garden, especially with the beautiful umbrellas made of flowers hanging from the ceiling decorated for Faster, of course the escorts were also dressed for the occasion.

Brother Norval Crossman was in charge of the dance. Richard Wahlberg had the box office under control. Mary Frances Wahlberg, Doddie and Bill Hobson, Delsie and Mark Cotton were greeting the guests to be seated at their right places. During the first intermission several pot plants of Easter lilies and tulips were given as prizes to guests with lucky numbers on their admission tickets.

Forty years of wedded happiness was observed by two of our faithful members, Franklin and Almeda Bravenec; they have two daughters, Joan Caffey and Linda Davenport. These two young ladies planned this 40th wedding anniversary party for their parents in the home of Joan Caffey with about 40 guests to wish them hap-

piness. Three lovely granddaughters are the pride of Franklin and Almeda. Joan has two and Linda one. Congratulations.

A glorious Hawaiian cruse was enjoyed by two of our members, Henry and Gertrude Bravenee4 they left all their worries behind and April 5 left for Hawaii for ten glorious days. They have one son, William, and one daughter, Alice, who will graduate this year from high school. William and Alice are keeping the home fires burning while their parents are on their holiday spree having a good time.

Alice is the last grandchild of Minnie and Joe Bravenec.

It was so nice to see Dot and Andy Barton at the Knights of Dixie dance; they have been such regular guests that their absence was too obvious and they really were missed. They made up for it this time; they occupied Tables 27 and 28 with friends and enjoyed the evening in good company with Marvin and Ethel Johnson, John and Frances Gazara, Ann and Bill Barton, Ethel and Emil Nieman, Elsie and Ivan Perry, Dave and Lucile Bright, Sadie Steely and George Heckathorne, most of these ladies had orchids from their spouses and looked beautiful. Come back soon.

Brother J. W. Huber and wife, Gazela, wearing a huge white orchid were seated at their regular place, Table 7, but their regular companions, Mr. and Mrs. Quades, were missing; they ventured to Austin and Marble Falls over the Easter weekend, returning Monday.

At Table 39 Brother G. C. Renfro, with his companion, Miss Ruth Durham, entertained friends from Dallas: Mr. and Mrs. Jerry and Charlotte Chenevert. Both ladies wore formal gowns and orchids to match.

Brother Jerry Pokorny has his son, Mr. Radka Pokorny, visiting from Czechoslovakia he will stay several weeks to enjoy his father's hospitality. Sister Naomi Kostom and Brother Arnold Spencer had the pleasure to chat with Mr. Pokorny while visiting with Sister Dorothy Muras in Shiner.

We missed her spouse, Amos; he has his knee in a cast up to his hip, but being the good husband he is he insisted that Della join her friends at Table 8 who were anxious to make her birthday and Easter a happy one. At intermission time a spread of delicious food appeared and was enjoyed by friends at Tables 7 and 8. Singing "Happy Birthday" were Rita and Homer Alexander, Emil Slanina, Naomi Kostom, Arnold Spence, Leola and Allen Peeples, J. W. and Gazela Huber, Albert Zajicek and Mrs. Tillie Fridel. To top it off Homer requested "Beer Barrel Polka" and danced with Della at a brisk tempo. Happy birthday, Della!

For the Easter weekend, Brother Tom and Mary Ebner from Taft were visiting with their daughter, Beth, and son-in-law, Jim Bush, and two grandchildren, Lisa and Jason; both children are members of Lodge No. 88. While here they visited the lodge Saturday night and enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of our Blue Room with his brother Joe and sister-in-law Ann Elzner.

Joe is getting to be a professional fence builder, Ann said. He helped Noel Kennedy to put one up and also some friends who live out of town, so I guess he deserved a leisure hour to relax. Torn and Mary, come back soon.

Annie Vala is feeling fine and looking good. She sure can serve these special breakfasts after the Friday and Saturday dances with the help of Louise Chudej, and this time she also, wore an orchid which was given to her by her daughter, Frances Vala. You looked very nice, Annie!

We have several sick members who just won't give up and are trying to fight whatever is ailing virus. Sister Rosalee Kostom feels a little better and I heard K=1 Lindemann is trying to get it too.

My brother, Frank Dvorak, also looks droopy, which is very unusual; he don't give in so easily, as r know him I hope this sunny, warm weather will bring good health to all of you, don't give up.

The Birthday Club meeting last Wednesday, was well attended and we were so glad to see our Sister Marie Filipek; her daughter, Georgie, was so nice to bring her mother to see her friends Marie

9 resides in the Blalock Nursing Home on Long Point here in Houston. If you have time to go see her, also Sister Evelyn Mikeska's mother, Mrs. Tracy Macat, makes her home there, but Evelyn told me she was in Spring Branch Hospital for some tests, however, I am sure she is back in the nursing home. Sister Mary Johnson's sister is also there; her name is Louise Roznovsky; so you see dear people, if you make one trip how many of our ladies you will make happy. Try and see them sometimes soon.

A sales representatives' class was held in Crosby, Tuesday, April 5th.

District V Director Brother Louis Hanus was so kind and offered to take four of us from Lodge 88.

Before leaving Houston we were treated to a nice dinner by our gracious host and then proceeded to Crosby. We arrived in ample time to visit with Brother and Sister Silas Smith and Evelyn Mikeska. The two-hour class passed quickly in discussing the new Guaranteed Insurability Rider which was interesting. Sister Evelyn served refreshments which everyone enjoyed and it was time to depart for home. Evelyn Hegwood, Della Kadlecek, Pearl Hanka and I wish to thank Brother Louis Harms for taking us.

Remember May 1st Clean-Up Day at Lodge No. 88, come out and use some of that elbow grease; it will be appreciated.

LODGE NO. 185, NEW BRAUNFELS The March 25th meeting was held at St. Thomas Open Air Chapel at Canyon Lake.

Monsignor Drazd was a very gracious host and Margaret and Gordon Hrabal provided the refreshments.

Brother Ernest Jasek presided, due to• absence of President Joe Slavik. We hope to see Brother Slavik back very soon. We all welcomed Brother Gordon Hrabal as a new sales representative for the New Braunfels area and discussed possibilities of the different locations where our meetings might be held, which would be convenient to all. It was decided to have our meetings on Sundays, since it would be easier to combine the youth meeting with the adult lodge

and have the youth meeting an hour earlier. Sister and Brother Parker and family will be gone for the summer and Assistant Youth Leader Gladys Jasek will try to help with the youth meeting during the summer.

The next meeting will be held at Canyon Lake Estates Civic Club Saturday, April 23rd. The youth group will meet at 2 p.m. and the adults will meet at 3 p.m. We decided that it, would be easier to find the Civic Club during the day and everyone can enjoy the Canyon Lake surroundings. Fraternally yours, Beatrix Parker Secretary — SPJST — CZECH STUDENT-TEACHERS CONFERENCE, APRIL 23rd IN TAYLOR The University of Texas Czech Club at Austin will host the 4th annual Czech Student and Teachers Conference on Saturday, April 23, at the SPJST building east of Taylor (north of Highway 79).

The program will be from 2 to 5 p.m. with registration starting at 1 p.m. Skits will be presented by the University of Houston and Texas A & M University Czech Clubs; and the U.T. Czech Singers will present a program of Czech and Slovak songs. Also, a slide presentation will be given by Robert Janak and a dance group, from Abbott will do the Beseda. In addition, there will be various other presentations.

Following the afternoon meeting, there will be a social, a barbecue dinner (6 to 7 p.m.) and a polka dance featuring the Red Ravens of Schulenburg, from 8 to 12.

Prices for the Czech Conference activities are: Afternoon program — free Barbecue — $2.25 Dance — $2.50 Barbecue and Dance — $4.00 We feel that this will be a very successful program since we have been able to get the younger generation involved. This will also be an incentive for them to become aware of their Czech background and to become active in Czech activities.

KENNY mum as Augustus Coo HLAHOL DRAMATIC CLUB NOTES

This is again a reminder of the repeat performance of "The Dutch Detective" which is coming up at Lodge 88, Houston, on May 20th.

Kenny Broz takes the part of a young bridegroom, Augustus Coo. He seems to have a way of getting lost, much to the dismay of his young bride, Gladys Howler.

Marcell Malak as Ambrosia McCarty delights the audience as the queen of the lunchroom. She takes trlo lip from anyone; she goes about her business with a devilmay-care attitude, come what may.

Jan Schroif, The Dutch Detective, faces an entirely new venture on the stage in that this is his first English part. You have seen him in Czech plays, and usually in the part of a comedian.

The cast is looking forward to seeing you again, so don't forget the evening of Friday, May 20th.

Many of our members have been ill and have recovered while some are still convalescing. Home from the hospital are: Sophie Newton, Charlie Hata, Roger Kuibala, Beulah La Bate, Don Powers and Mrs. Richard (Peggy) Hubenak, Jr., Rudy Chaloupka, was in ICU at St. Joseph Hospital, but is back in his hospital room. Mark Phillips left the hospital in Weatherford for a few days only to return with a different ailment.

Our Sunshine Comm. secretary sent a card to Brother Sid Pokladnik of Dallas and to Brother Edw. L. Marek, expressing our regrets concerning their illness. They are friends of many of our members.

Emil Holacka, a former manager of our lodge, is seriously ill in a local nursing home. We sincerely hope all the infirmed continue to improve and return to good health. Before the meeting closed there was a report and discussion by members who attended the district workshop recently.

A parting reminder of May's meeting day changed to the third Sunday, at 2 p.m. and there is a lodge dance on June 11th.

Dear Members: Here we are with the first quarter of 19'77 well behind us and Some of us are no doubt remembering Christmas. That is, if you have not been too busy filling out your tax forms, Now with that out of the way perhaps we can look forward to lodge work with a trifle more gusto.

Our younger members displayed their zest at the Easter egg hunt on our meeting day, April 10th.

They were joined later in an egg roll by the adult members. Thanks to Bessie Ellsworth for her work n preparing the hunt. We were glad to have Mr. Kamas, District III youth counselor from Dallas as our guest. Another guest was Antonette Sellek.

A decision was made to change the May meeting from the usual second Sunday to the third Sunday to avoid double activities on Mother's Day. On May 15th we will honor both mothers and fathers at the gathering.

Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, April 3, 1977, at the Grant Building with President Frank Zabransky presiding. The pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag was led by Steven Koehne and Tommy Holy.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Erwin Holy. They were approved after minor corrections.

Youth Leader Helen Zabransky gave her report on the youth club activities. She also reported that she and her assistant, Marlyn Sevcik, had just returned from the Youth Leaders' Retreat held at the Circle D Resort, near Bastrop.

They had a, nice time and learned many new things. They also enjoyed visiting with the other leaders.

President Zabransky announced that he would name the Audit Committee members at the next meeting.

Refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned. The youth club then presented an enjoyable Easter program which was as follows: Welcome — Annie Zabransky It's Faster (poem) — Melissa Holy Five Little Chickadees (song) — John Zak To Have a Happy Easter (poem) — Kim Drozd Bunny Hop (dance) — youth club Battle Hymn of the Republic — song, by all.

The youth club then enjoyed an Easter egg hunt and also an egg decorating contest was held.

The evening was spent in conversation and playing games. Refreshments and lunch were served.

April birthday honorees were: Dane. Vasek, Toni Galetka, Andela Zabransky and Edwin Gallia, Jr. Winner of the birthday cake was Andela Zabransky.

Evelyn Holy won the adult door prize and Dana Vasek the youth door prize.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, May 8th, at the Grant Building, beginning at 2 p.m. The

Fraternally, Patsy Zabransky Reporter - SPJST — LODGE NO. 29, TAYLOR Dear Members: The monthly meeting of Lodge 29 was called to order at 4 p.m.

April 3rd by President Edwin Adamek.

Ronald and Troy Marx led the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance. We remained standing to pay respect to our deceased members.

We had roll call of officers and all were present, except our youth leader, Melvin Steger, and his wife, Geraldine.

President Adamek welcomed everyone at the meeting and we are seeing more new faces at our meetings.

On the sick list are Sister Ange-line Prcin and Brother W. H. Glover.

Secretary Mike Kaiser read the minutes of the previous meeting and Albin Machu gave his report.

New members received into our lodge are Larry W. Hoag and Otis Lehmann and Wilma Obermiller transferred to Lodge 32.

The officers workshop was held at our lodge March 19 and President Adamek thanked the ladies who helped prepare the delicious food.

Our new local Rules and Regulations books were passed out after the meeting and we hope everyone has a book; if you did not get one, there are some available.

Don't forget about our May Fete that is coming up Sunday, May 7th. Crowning will he at 3 p.m. and ,grand march at 6; then dancing from 6 to 10 p.m. There will be plenty of food and beverages all afternoon and night.

The University of Texas Czech Club will also host the 4th annual Czech Ex-Students and Teachers Conference at our lodge Saturday, April 23rd. The program will be from 2 to 5 p.m. There will be a social, a barbecue supper from 6 to 7, and then a dance featuring The Red Ravens Orchestra from Schulenburg from 8 to 12.

We are hoping to see everyone at this gala affair and invite your friends to come, too.

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Della Kadlecek, Wednesday, April 13th at 11 a.m.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Rosalee Kostom and they were accepted as read. It was good to have Sister Kostom with us because she has been ill and we missed her.

Sister Mary Tilich, treasurer, has also been ill so she had Sister Pearl Hanka read the treasurer's report.

Thanks, Sister Pearl, it was well done.

It was indeed a pleasure to see Sister Mary Sanderson at our meeting. She has had an operation but she is recuperating greatly.

Sister Della Kadlecek was voted to represent the Birthday Club at the special committee meeting.

Now, I must tell you that I was misinformed in the March meeting concerning the donation of a German chocolate cake. No offense. Our dear Sister Ida Hanka donated the cake to the Birthday Club Sisters and Sister Mary Fusig was good enough to make the cake.

Dear Members and Friends: Easter has passed and I hope everyone had a happy Easter. It was a lovely day here in Houston.

I know all of the children had a wonderful time. We had the family for Sunday dinner and we were thankful everyone was well and together.

Saturday night we attended a dance at Lodge 172 in Pasadena to the music of Alvin Linhart. All of us had a good time. It is a fun place to have an enjoyable evening.

Then Saturday night we went to the Sons of Hermann at 120 Yale Street, with friends from Pasadena and Houston. We met many old friends and had a wonderful time. We did learn that one of our friends from there was in the hospital and pretty bad off. We plan

After our rehearsal most of us went down to the Temple Junior College auditorium to meet with the Czechoslovakian artists and it was our pleasure to hear several of their fine numbers and we particularly enjoyed the last two numbers which were really outstanding. After the performance we had a reception in one of the rooms adjacent to the auditorium and we enjoyed meeting those fine young artists and conversing with them in their native language; some were surprised that we could rse the Czech language fluently and we hope we made their stay in Temple more enjoyable.

Dear Readers: The Seaton Choral Club met last night for their regular rehearsal with the following members present: Willie and Adeline Kohutek, Alfred and Martha Klusacek, Emily Stuteville, Elsie Cabla, Janet Young (our newest member) Vallie Zavodny, Dorothy Pechal, Annie Jakubee, our leader, Clarence Sula, Georgia Sodek, Laverne Vanicek, Frank and Eleonora Spanhel, Robert and Mary Vasicek, Edward J. Sula (another new member), and Otto and Matilda Hanus.

The attendance was smaller than usual due to the performance of the Czechoslovak jazz •band at the Temple Junior College auditorium.

We had a short business meeting before starting our rehearsal and the Rogers Homecoming celebration was discussed and our performance in it. This will be at Rogers on April 30th, beginning at 1 p.m. Let's all of us be present for our next rehearsal to be in top shape for this performance.

It was decided to wear our Centennial dresses or Czech costume; if you don't have either, come out any way, you will be welcome to perform with us.

After our business meeting, we had our rehearsal and what a time we had singing those old favorites, we have picked out a list of songs that we will sing at Rogers and will polish up on them at our next rehearsal and we hope all of you will be present. Let's make our Choral Club tops; your

Tuesday evening, March 8th, 1977, the Moravian Folk Ensemble (BROLN) from Brno, Ozechoslova,kia presented a beautiful program of folk dancing, singing and instrumental music at the McFarlin Auditorium on the SMU campus, sponsored by °The Community Course. It was well attended and much appreciated by many members of various Ozech societies in and near Dallas.

After the program the American Czech Culture Society Committee entertained the performers and other guests with a reception at the SPJST Lodge No. 84, on Floyd Street, Dallas. It was a wonderfully gala evening with good food and beverages presided over by Sister Bessie Petr and her committee, and the lively music presented by Brother Charlie Adamcik and his orchestra.

The American Czech Culture Society especially thanks their people and the members of Lodge 84 for providing the use of their hall.

Our guests from Czechoslovakia appeared to be very pleased with the hospitality extended to them in Dallas and particularly impressed by the number of people who were able to speak Czech with them.

The society committee is indebted to and thanks all who helped make this a very happy and memorable occasion for everyone who participated.

Wednesday, April 20. 1977 TO: THE SECRETARIES OF ALL LODGES OWNING OR HAVING OWNED THEIR LODGE BUILDINGS In order that we may have all the necessary data and pictures of lodge halls for our history book, which was a mandate in the last convention, and having been delegated by the Supreme Lodge to compile the' history of our SPJST, I am asking all of the lodges who may now have or have had lodge halls if possible to send us a picture of your hall. LOVERS OF THE CZECH LANGUAGE . . . COME TO OUR MEETING IN TAYLOR If you would like to meet and share ideas with others who are interested in and proud of their Czech heritage, please come to the annual Czech Ex-Students' Association of Texas (CESAT) meeting Saturday, April 23, 1977, at 10 a.m.

It will be held at the SPJST Lodge No, 29, in Taylor.

At 2 p.m. the fourth annual statewide meeting sponsored by the University of Texas Czech Club for Cze'ch students, teachers, and friends, will also be held at the Taylor SPJST lodge on the same date. A special treat will be provided by the University Czech Singers at the evening program,

13 dinner, and dance, and this upcoming one is no exception; Mark this date on your calendar now and plan to bring other interested persons with you.

Fraternally, Virginia R. Thomas Secretary (CESAT) SPJST — WHY STUDY CZECH? The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas and the Ceska Matice Vyssiho Vlzdelani (Czech Council of Higher Education) has developed the following ten basic reasons why persons, especially high school graduates, should elect to enroll and study the Czech language and cultural heritage in universities or colleges of their choice.

1. As a good research language: Czech is the third most spoken language not only in Texas but many other states. The history of the Czechs in Texas, their folklore, songs, and dances, etc., have not been studied or written up in great detail and many opportunities exist for original research.

Many families of Czech ancestry want badly to know of their ancestors' history and early life on the Texas frontier. A complete history of the Czechs in Texas needs to be written but much of the background material is recorded in Czech longhand in old lodge and church records. This all needs researching, translation, and publication.

2. As a teaching language for teachers: Some high schools and junior colleges in Texas would like to have the Czech language as part of their curriculum but teachers capable of teaching Czech are not available to such institutions. Students planning to teach as a vocation should consider learning the Czech language as one of the courses they could teach.

3. As a political or diplomatic language: Government agencies such as the National Security Council and the Joint Publications Research Service employ personnel who have a working knowledge of the Czech language. The U. S. Consulates and Embassies in Slavic countries are in need of employees who speak, read and write the language. Descendants of Czech immigrants to Texas make espe-

daily desirable and liked employees in countries of Central Europe where Slavic languages are spoken. Such work will be a rewarding and interesting career.

4. As a "Study Abroad" language: Students studying the Czech language become eligible to join the group who study at Charles University for six weeks each summer. Normal school expenses within the borders of Czechoslovakia are paid by that government as a scholarship by arrangements previously made between Doctors Hunacek and Skrivanek.

Travel throughout communities in Czechoslovakia is arranged and paid for by the Czech government.

5. As an occupational language: In recent years, a better relationship in business enterprises has been developed between the United States, Russia and Yugoslavia and there are already indications many U.S. firms will become involved deeply in those countries. Three giant U. S. corporations have been working out details of the North Star Gas Line out of Siberia.

Brown & Root, Inc. is negotiating for a very large off-shore fabricating yard on the north shore of the Caspian Sea. U. S. firms were recently invited to bid on a pipeline in Yugoslavia engineered by a firm from Oklahoma. There will be an increasing demand for young engineers having a knowledge of the language to work in these Slavic speaking areas, including Czechoslovakia and Poland. It would be well for young engineers to prepare themselves by studying the Czech language now.

6. As an ancestral language: There are many students enrolled in universities throughout the state of Texas whose ancestral roots were in Czechoslovakia, Poland, or Russia. Study of the Czech language will give such persons a better understanding of themselves as well as their ancestors and their relatives. It is highly satisfying to the individual fo be able to understand the language of his grandparents. The U.S. government now recognizes this country is great because we are a composite society of many people and cultures. It is no longer I disgrace not to be able to "speak American" and instead the government now encourages and fosters the teaching of the languages of

14 our forefathers.

7. As a second language: In travels around the world, an American is amazed at the number of people in certain "underdeveloped" countries who speak a second and even a third language as an everyday occurrence. The American with his one language is left with a feeling of shame and guilt at being schooled to speak only the one language. With air travel, second and third languages are becoming a necessity in business as well as when on vacation.

The U.S. should embark on a program of having all students learn-, ing a second language. Czech can be such a successful second language.

8. As a historical language: The origin of the Czech language is not really known and it is as sumed that Cyril and Methodius only thew upon a tongue already in the land. They developed the Cyrilic Alphabet in the 9th century. The Cyrilic Alphabet with its 41 characters has almost no silent letters, thus making Czech an unusual language with as much historical background and interesting origins as other languages. It can be a lifetime study in itself.

Czech is one of the few phonetic languages which pronounces all letters.

9. As the language of the Wends: The largest colony of the Wends outside Eastern Germany was established in Serbin, in Central Texas in 1854. These Slavic people left Germany to be able to worship in their own Wendish tongue but fate and time "Germanized" their descendants now found all over Texas. There is no institution which teaches Wendish as a language but anyone who is proficient in the Czech language can understand and read Wendish and can carry on a conversation with anyone speaking Wendish. The Czech language then becomes the language of the Wends and persons interested in research into. that "tribe" should study Czech as a prerequisite. The two languages of Czech and Wendish are very much alike.

10. As a language of masters: Clzeeh has been the language of masters and leaders since it was developed by Cyril and Methodius in the 9th century. These were Jan Hus who started the reformation

movement 100 years before Martin Luther, Jan Amos Komensky who developed new teaching methods using pictures, Antonin Dvorak, the playwright, Bedrich Smetana, composer of "The Bartered Bride," and many others. Czech is an old

respectful language equal to the other languages such as French, German, Spanish, etc. It has developed more status since World War I when Czechoslovakia became a free nation.

ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED Mr. and Mrs. Emil W. Gaydosik of Brookshire and Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Peschke of Schulenburg are happy to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their children, Cheryl Ann and Nathan Scott.

The bride-elect will graduate from Sam Houston State University in May with a degree in business education and the groomelect is employed . with the Austin Fire Department.

The couple will be married on May 28, in the First United Methodist Church at Patison.

Being a member of Lodge 42 in Brookshire, Cheryl Ann has taken an active part in lodge activities, namely serving as treasurer-reporter; and youth activities, candidate for Miss SPJST at the 1972 SPJST Convention in Houston. Besides her other youth activities, she was highly acclaimed with her

trumpet solo presentations at the 86th National Fraternal Congress in Dallas and the Texas Fraternal Congress in San Antonio, both performances held during the same period.

From The State Youth Director Another good quarter has passed in the Youth Department, with activities taking place at many of the lodges. This report indicates an average of nearly 700 youth attending the meetings each month.

I wonder how much larger that number would have been if we had had a report from the eight youth clubs that did not send in a report. With that many active youth in our SPJST Youth Program, I think it can be said that we are touching the lives of many of our young people and offering them a good place of entertainment and training.

Some of the district training classes for all youth leaders and assistants have already been held and other dates are set, I hope all youth leaders and their assistants will take advantage of the opportunity to attend one of these classes. They are for your benefit and are of great help to everyone involved in our Youth Program.

This is a time for questions and answers, a time to find out why things are done or not done, and any changes or plans for the future. These classes and training programs are for your benefit, so take advantage of them.

The Youth Leaders' Retreat was held at the Circle D Resort near Bastrop the first weekend in April.

From the evaluation sheets that I have received, I think it was quite successful. There have been some good suggestions and some criticisms to consider for future Retreats, and this is appreciated.

It is too bad that every youth leader and parent did not hear Mr. Leonard Gittinger, Jr.'s talk Saturday night. He told us about the cults (posing as religious groups) that are taking our young people into their midst and brainwashing them to work for the "head man."

He told of his personal experience in his family and how this can destroy a young boy or girl so quickly before they realize what is happening. Everyone at the Retreat praised Mr. Gittinger's presentation and seemed glad that they knew more about how these cults work and how to warn our young people of the danger of listening to these people. If anyone is interested in hearing this talk, I have a good tape recording of his message. I will be glad to let you listen to what he said.

I an very proud of this quarterly report. This shows a gradual increase in attendance at our youth club meetings in some of the lodges. Let's encourage our youth leaders. They are doing a good job with our youth!

Dear Members: The attendance at the district meeting was good, especially the youth. We would like to thank each club and the youth for the Progr am they prepared for us.

There were 9 youth clubs represented and there were also members from Buckholts but their youth club was not present.

The youth sold all of their pastries and the 15 cakes auctioned off brought in $340, so the members really did support the youth.

Thanks to everyone who purchased pastries or helped in any way.

The next big activity will be our District YAD which will be held July 10th at Lodge 80, Holland.

Every youth should be making their crafts and deciding what talent they could perform. The time will be here before you know it. The entry blanks must be sent in 20 days before YAD.

Our camp will be July 26th through August 1st with the juniors to stay 3 days and nights and the teens to follow the next 3 days and nights.

The fall District II meeting will be August 14th at Lodge 29 in Taylor. Now you can make a notation of all the district activities and plan to attend.

All the youth leaders and assistants from District II will hold a preparation training class on Monday, May 23 at Lodge 177, Academy, starting at 9 a.m. We will discuss YAD, Camp, etc. We will also cover new changes and go over forms that the leaders have to fill out.

You will also receive your supplies for the new year starting June 1st, 1977. We hope you can be present.

The District IV meeting will be held April 24, 1977, at Lubbock. If the youth club members want to earn some extra cash, get busy because the rules, as in previous years, will be the same.

1) Each youth club may have a skit or number on the program, time not to exceed 15 minutes; 2) Each youth club having onethird of their active youth present will receive some cash.

3) Each youth club can have a booth of items for sale, such as: crafts, foods, canned goods, anything that will sell. Each club shall keep their proceeds, so let's have a good turnout of our youth clubs.

It is time to think about YAD because it will be here before you know it: June 12th at Seymour, so enter as many categories as rules permit.

From The Lodge Youth Leaders LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Readers, The youth club's meeting was held April 1st with all members being present. I was proud of ev-

eryone for your good attendance.

I hope to see all of you present again at the next meeting.

We are going to have a crazyfunny hat contest, poem skits or songs for Mother's Day program, so try to do something for your mother. We will be making items and gifts for them , so try to be at the lodge on Fridays.

Our Easter program and egg hunt turned out real well after the rain stopped and the sun began to shine. Everyone seemed to have had a big time. Supper was delicious which was prepared by the Kitchen Committee, plus other Lodge No. 6 ladies.

The youth club made a good income selling tickets on the slocooker. The winner was Linda Gomez from Dallas and the chocolate rabbit was won by Jeanie Chase. We also had several door prizes donated, plus money donated toward the Easter eggs, including an Easter basket for the Marek boys. I want to thank each of you for donating. Thank you again!

Many thanks are also in order to everyone for helping me with the Progr am, egg hunt, or whatever you did and my assistant youth leader, Sister Rose Uptmor.

The youth leaders training seminar was enjoyed by all on March 26th.

The volley ball playoffs were set for April 15th at Dunbar gym in West. And the volleyball tournament was set for April 17 at the same location, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

District III meeting was held at our lodge on April 17th.

The birthdays for April were: Buckie Uptmor, Keith Hykel, and Melanie Mazanec. Bobby Hykel brought the pretty bunny cake.

Dear Readers: This is my fourth month as youth leader of the Victoria Youth Club. It gives me much pleasure to work with our fine group of 11 youth club members, and I hope they enjoy the youth club at least half as much as I do. We are small in number but, I have a vision that we shall grow.

Wednesday, April 20, 197'7 On April 6th, our youth club had an Easter egg hunt on the Edwin J. Smajstrla ranch on Lower Mission Valley Road. The group went on a sightseeing tour of the ranch, after which they hunted eggs. Marvin Troubka was the winner of the prize egg in the teenage group and Jason Motel was the winner of the prize egg in the junior group.

A fire was built and wieners were roasted for hot dogs. Other refreshments consisted of chicken salnd AnidwicheS, cheese sandwiches, cup cakes, cookies, potato chips, fritos and soft drinks. After refreshments, games were played.

Fourteen youths attended with three being guests. Also 13 adults attended. Those of you who could not be with us, we missed you We hope you can be with us next time.

We also discussed that we are either going to Trmer Space or the Dragraces.

At our meeting we also had a kite-flying contest, Easter egg hunt, and a program. Then we adjourned the meeting.

LODGE NO. 9, SNOOK Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was fairly well attended and thanks to Mrs. Adele Englemann for the good talk about Easter. It was very informative and knowledgeable.

March 27th, several of us attended the District I spring meeting at Brenham. It sure was nice see some of the youth again.

Our Parent Banquet was planned for April 19th, at 7:30 p.m. Mrs.

April 22nd we planned to attend the PTA Talent Show at Snook gym.

April 23rd we will attend the Lions' Club Hootenany to be held at Caldwell High School gym, at 7:30 p.m.

April 24th we will also attend the District I Youth Club meeting at Brenham's Silver Wing Ballroom, at 1:30 p.m. and skating afterward. Sounds like fun.

Our next monthly meeting will be held Wednesday evening, May 4th at 7 p.m. See you at an activity.

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Members, We held our meeting April 1st.

There were 33 members present, which was 100 percent.

Sunday, April 3 we held our Easter program, egg hunt and family supper.

On April 13th we put on our Easter program at the rest home and made Faster baskets for the patients.

The volleyball playoffs were scheduled for April 15th in West.

District III Volleyball Tournament was held Sunday, April 17th after the District III meeting.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz told us a scrapbook will be kept from each lodge this coming year, instead of a poster contest. She also reminded us of Camp and YAD, also the rules for each category. We are to collect clothes for a family who has lost everything in a fire.

Correspondence was read from the Charles Smith family, Mr. and Mrs. Barret Ivy and Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Uptmor.

We have one new member, Richard Seith.

A volleyball net was donated by Joyce and Pat Wachsmann.

Birthdays for the month are: Keith Hykel, Karen Kutscherousky and Bucky Uptmor. The cake was brought by Bobby Hykel.

The door prize was won by Keith Hykel.

CHARLOTTE BANIK 1976-77 STATE QUEEN CHARLOTTE BANIK'S SPEECH Good afternoon: In our bicentennial year, the focus is on America's past. It is filled with exciting events and heroic deeds. This made it an important part of our American heritage. And that's why I chose as my topic, a brief history of the SPJST. The SPJST, or the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, originated from an older insurance society known as the Czecho-Slavic Benevolent Society with lodges in many states. The idea of being paid a specific amount of money in the event of a death of a member appealed to the Czech and Slovak immigrant, especially since this was an organization that they themselves governed. The Society survived during the Civil War and by 1880, there were 12 lodges in Texas.

The members in Texas soon became disenchanted with the manner of collecting dues for the mortuary fund and after being unable to work for changes at a convention li n'd in f,. r'.."Min

nesota in 1896, the delegates returned and decided to form an organization of their own.

On December 28, 1896, 25 CzechTexans met at La Grange, Fayette County for the purpose of forming a new Texas-based fraternal society.

The first convention was held in La Grange in July of 1897 with 22 lodges represented.

From this humble beginning our Society has grown to over 130 lodges located across the state.

Through this lodge system the SPJST not only provides financial protection to its members but social and fraternal benefits to the entire family.

The history of the SPJST is synonymous with the history of our country. We have weathered wars, depressions, and other economic set-backs but have survived and prospered. Thank you!

We have 7 new members: Monroe, Jimmy, and Mike Jimeney; Weldon, Stephen, Melanie and Rodney Powell, and Bobby Joe Ralson. We are glad to have you as our new members. Be sure and attend all meetings.

Saturday, April 23rd we will have the play "The Adventures of Paddington Bear" at our lodge, starting at 2 p.m.

Then Saturday, April 30th, we will play putt-putt golf, so be there at 1:30 p.m. The youth. club will pay our way.

We voted to donate $60 to the mother lodge to help pave the parking lot.

by Jan Schoenemann, age 14 Somerville, Texas — Lodge No. 9, District I Czechoslovakia is one of Eastern Europe's leading manufacturing countries. Czech factories produce wide variety of products, ranging from automobiles to tanks and television sets. The fertile soil of pr ( . r Czech r1-31ovo i or,

20 wheat and barley crops and many other farm products.

Czechoslovakia is a beautiful country with snow capped mountains, rounded hills, and rolling plains. Czechoslovakia is the homeland of Czechs and Slovaks, two Slavic peoples noted for their love of music and sports. The Czechs live in two western areas called Bohemia and Moravia. The Slovaks Ave in an eastern area called Slovakia.

The Hungarians ruled the Slovaks for one thousand years, and the Austrian monarchs ruled the Czechs for almost 400 years. The Czechs and Slovaks formed Czechoslovakia, which was a free republic until shortly before World War IL Czechoslovakia has a large deposit of graphite, manganese, lead, zinc, mercury, silver, and gold.

Also other mineral resources inelude urarkilumi, clap, and sand used for making glass.

The soil is one of the country's most important resources. About half the land can be farmed and forests cover one-third of the land.

Czechoslovakia, has a large water power resource and the government has built dams and plants on many rivers to provide water for farming and electric power.

The government controls almost all the farmland and about one-fifth of the working people are engaged in agriculture and forestry. Their chief crops are barley, oats, potatoes, sugar beets, rye, and wheat.

Czechoslovakia has two major groups, the Czechs and the Slovaks.

Both groups are of Slavic origin.

The Moravians are related to the Czechs, and speak the same language. There are more than twice as many Czechs and Moravians as there are Slovaks in the country.

The Slovaks and the Czechs are unalike in many ways. The Czechs have almost always been more like the peoples of Northern and Western European countries, mixing only slightly with neighboring people.

The Slovaks, Moravians, and Czechs are united by a love of the arts and age-old traditions. Singing and folk dancing are very popular in all parts of the country. Christmas is an important festival time. The people enjoy sports, such as, skiing, ice skating,

tennis, and swimming.

The people of Czechoslovakia are famous for their handicrafts. The people in small villages still wear costumes decorated with colorful embroidery and elaborate needlework. Other crafts include weaving and pottery making.

Czechoslovakia's transportation and communication systems are owned and operated by the government They have many main railroads, mostly electric. Their airlines fly to about 40 countries and about 40 radio stations broadcast in Czech, Slovak, Russian, and other languages.

Education is also controlled by the •government. The children between the ages of 6 and 15 must receive nine years of education.

Students may choose to get further education, which will require about three more years.

There are different types of secondary schools, including vocational schools and schools of general education. Graduates of general education schools may attend universities for five or six years of study.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, HENRY S. PAULUS,

who passed away in a Yoakum hospital on Feb. 19th, 1977, at the age of 88 years.

Brother Paulus was an attorney in the Yoakum area for 65 years, and at one time was district attorney.

Brother Paulus was born May 24th, 1888. He was a charter mem-

ber of the Yoakum Rotary Club, past president of the Chamber of Commerce, formerly served on the State Prison Board, and was a former member of the Board of Regents of the University of Texas, and was a member of the SPJST and the Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 21st, at the Episcopal Church, with Rev. John Beebe officiating. Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Newton Crain of Houston and Mrs. Roger Hoffmann of Alice.

Resolution Committee: Anita Sebesta Lenora Sebesta Janice Victorick — SPJST -EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, in behalf of all the members of SPJST Lodge-No. 175, Rosenberg, wish to express our sympathy and understanding to the family of our departed lodge ro ther, J. J. VYVIAL, Grandpa Vyvial was born in Lavaca County on June 6, 1886, and passed away March 14, 1977.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Teresa, August 5, 1929.

Brother Vyvial was admitted to the SPJST Fraternity in 1908. He spent many years working to increase the effectiveness of the three words on the front page of the Vestnik. He was born on the days of the wooden mold board plow and oxen and lived to see a man walk on the moon. This was of great interest to him for he always stressed education and industry.

He leaves many old and dear friends and a family of one daughter, five sons, 13 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren o mourn and remember him.

Brother Vyvial was laid to rest in the WOW Cemetery in Rosenberg. Brother Louis Hanus officiated at the service and gave a beautiful sermon of fraternal love and 'mfort to all.

Thank you, Brother Vyvial, for sharing your life with us, for we pass this way but once.

Brother McDonald was born in Brazos COunty on September 1, 1919, and was a lifelong resident of this area. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. He was a rancher residing in the Harvey Community.
