FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK In this issue, as has happened so many times before, we are lacking space and delaying most of our Expressions of Sympathy and that had to be done even with the moving back the Czech section a couple of pages and taking out the Czech editorial, which had already been set. In the newspaper business it seems a person is always in a race with a deadline and for space. We regret we cannot publish all the material we receive each week and ask your indulgence in these matters. There is just so much space in our Vestnik and we feel that all of you understand. We thank you for your consideration in these matters. Our Society is growing and so is the correspondence and interest. Publication of the Vestnik comes first, of necessity, and other correspondence is answered as time permits * This week we received a nice letter from the cultural department of the Czechoslovak Embassy sending us a list of places where those of our readers who would like to see some of the beautiful and melodious dances and hear the songs and music of Moravia can do so. In this issue on page 27 is an ad sent in by Ms Dorothy Hackney of Houston from the Society of Performing Arts and the appearance of this Moravian Folk Dance Coin-

THE BETTER PART The days are all too short to Waste A moment, with the time it takes For hunting flaws in useful folks, And magnifying small mistakes. But there is time enough to spare Between the dawn and sunset's glow, To recognize the kindly traits Possessed by people whom we know. Why make ado for minor faults; And would it not be better far To notice only things that prove What loyal friends the neighbors are? —Edith R. Smith pany at the Music Hall in Houston, March 5th, at 8:30 p.m. This is the company's second appearance in the U.S.; the first was in 1972. Their name is BROLN (Brnensky Rozhlasovy Orchestr Lidovych N8stroju), from Brno, Czechoslovakia. They will also appear in Victoria, March 7th; Dallas, March 8th; and Lubbock, March 9th. If you go see them we are sure you will enjoy the evening. • •C Reactivating Lodges .. How to go about reactivating the lodge? This has been a major problem in the past two decades or so as apathy has extended its corruptive influence. The problem has become

so acute that one is, frankly, moved to say that the person who could come up with a solution would be greeted in fraternal ranks as nothing less than a hero. In an attempt to trace the cause of lodge inactivity and effect some sort of cure, here are a few suggestions: First, treat the new member with the utmost deference and respect. Secondly, emphasize the fraternal instead of the business end in your relations with him. Thirdly, conduct the meetings in the strictest sense of parliamentary procedure. In elaboration, let us cite all too often the first welcome the new member gets is a card or statement from the financial secretary telling him or her how much they are to pay without one word of welcome and without any mention of initiation. All too often when such a member does arrive at a meeting the financial secretary accepts his or her dues, hands him or he'r their acceptance into the lodge. How much better an impression and, first impressions are usually lasting ones, of the lodge and Society would have been created on that member had they received a visit from the sales representative or a committee of the lodge shortly after the lodge was advised they had signed an application for membership. Such a visit would have made them feel wanted and appre.
