FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, November 7th, we attended the District I fall meeting at Lodge No. 39, Bryan. District I President Victorick stated that he felt as if he was speaking to an empty building when he convened the meeting because there were only a few members present, however, soon the members started coming in and a nice group was present for the remainder of the meeting. On a nice Sunday afternoon in the first part of November, with the sun shining on a beautiful day, one must expect that Brother Victorick felt that he should call the meeting off when he began, but, of course, he felt much better as the members began arriving and a good-sized crowd assembled. He displayed good ability by deftly shifting his agenda to keep the meeting progressing. They had a nice short and briefly presented youth program after the break in the afternoon. We regretted to learn that the District I Youth Counselor, Lola Vavra, was resigning. Her loss is a loss to District I and the SPJST youth movement. SL Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska represented the SL and made a report for the main office. We were all saddened by his report that Brother Ernest J. Hanka of Lodge 88 had suddenly died the day before and the funeral was to be Monday, November 8th. We knew Brother Hanka well for many

LIU DOLLAR . . He was a member of, probably, the first SPJST youth club ever formed along with other Lodge 88 members, such as Brothers Louis Hanus, Alfred Hasher, Louis Rulik, etc., just to name a few, even before yours truly moved to Houston in the late 1930s. The youth club, at that time, had the sincere support of such old timers as Brothers Frank Ancinec, Frank Olexa, Louis Hanus, Sr., Frank Tesar, etc. From his youth Brother Hanka was active, almost continuously, in our SPJST. Our sincere sympathy to all of the surviving family; we knew all of them well. We last saw him October 24th at the Czech Day at Lodge 88. The picture of "A Salute to the Presidents," where he was included, appears in this issue. May honor to his memory live now and forever!

As was stated in the last issue, the PC had a meeting at the SL Saturday, October 30th. PC Secretary Melvin Skrabanek had written a letter to me and asked that I plan to be present, since this was • the last meeting of this PC; three new members, elected at the last convention in June, will be taking their seats effective January 1, 1917'7. Terry and I left earlier than usual and arrived just as the meeting was being convened by Chairman Mazanec. We are sure PC Secretary Skrabanek will cover what transpired in the meeting when he submits the minutes for publication. Legal Adviser Lesikar visited the meeting and so did SL Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, until 12 noon. He stated that Brother Morris and Brother Hejny were to attend, however, they did not come to the board meeting room. There was a brief and sincere exchange of views by those present in a sincere and fraternal way on sev eral items and the meeting moved along briskly. This editor appreciates this type of attitude where the good of our Society seems to be uppermost in the minds of those expressing their views. Chairman Mazanec and Sec retary Skra, banek certainly state their views right in the presence of the person they are talking about. That is the only way to settle problems amiably.
